It’s the first time in a while that he doesn’t know what comes next. He’s dove into the water hundreds of times. Screamed as his flesh was torn apart, heard Master of Puppets in the distance and held back tears. Felt Max’s cold, small hand in his as she laid in the hospital bed. There are things that always happen, no matter how hard he tries: El doesn’t arrive in time. Eddie dies. Max is put in a coma.
Steve fails. They lose.
“Steve, how many loops have you been through?”
His head is nodding, and his eyes are watery, and Eddie has approached him like a spooked animal.
“I lost count.”
AKA: The one where Steve Harrington is stuck in a time loop, and Eddie Munson is really fucking hard to save, or: fuck Volume 2, these bitches are in love.

And maybe that’s the real problem.
Eddie's never been good at being wanted.
He’s even worse at being alive.
Steve Harrington didn’t expect to survive high school — let alone survive the goddamn Upside Down. But when he finds Eddie torn up and barely breathing, something in him snaps — hard enough to pull him through the exhaustion, fear, and numbness he’s been feeling for the last year.
Steve doesn’t know what comes next.
All he knows is he can’t let Eddie Munson die.

Summary
A crack of gunfire sent Steve diving for cover behind a massive tree trunk. His stomach jolted against the ground as dust flew into his face, tasting dirt on his tongue. He peered around the edge, his rifle at the ready. That's when he saw the medic – Munson, he thought, though he didn't know much about the man beyond his face. Munson was crouched over a wounded soldier, his hands juggling medical equipment. He blew his too-long dark bangs out of his face, revealing dusky brown eyes that were blown wide.. eyes that matched Steve’s.
His mind split in two, torn between the ringing in his ears and the radio shaking in his trembling hand. The shrieking, shrill screams of the wounded pierced his eardrums, a chilling counterpoint to the calm, detached tone of the radio operator. "Sierra-1, this is Sierra-Actual. Report your status." Leaves rustled and birds cried along with the injured as nature protested their war.
