Chapter 1: The one where they hate on dating apps
Chapter Text
Soft melodic beats poured out over speakers set in each corner in the cafe. The music mingled with the whirring of grinding coffee beans as the baristas worked. Two people, in particular, were sitting on a large bench seat curving around a large set of bay style windows, a side table at either end of the bench. A light rain was tapping against the glass, the only thing keeping their conversation from being overheard.
“So how do I like, even respond to this kind of message?” A girl with wild pink hair was using her free hand to gesture at the brightly lit screen of her phone in her other hand.
“Huh? What’s the guy saying? Is he already asking to hook-up? That seems to be the kinds of people you attract on Kinder.” Another voice piqued, a light chuckle escaping at the end of their statement. The more masculine voice belonged to a boy with bright blonde hair with an unusual black streak in his left part. The pink haired girl lightly punched him in the shoulder from where she sat next to him in the small coffee shop.
The girl cleared her throat in preparation as she next spoke. “Hey sugar tits, how’s about you take a ride on my dick and we can make candy cum together.” She imitated in as deep a voice as she could muster. All the while trying to keep her voice from being heard by those who sat close by.
The blond let out a spurt of laughter, covering his mouth with a closed fist, using his other arm to clench his stomach. “He did not! Give me your phone Mina! There is no way some local fuck boy came up with that!” The blond counterpart was smiling with a dumb grin on his face as reached towards his friend.
Mina snatched her hand away quickly before her friend could take the phone. Instead, she jerked her phone in front of his face.
“Read it, Denki. Like, this is ridiculous!” Mina said, eyebrows furrowing and lips turning into a slight frown. “Do guys really think this kind of stuff is supposed to make me wanna hop into bed with them?”
“I mean, yeah?” Denki said, holding his hands palm out in front of his face and pushing Mina’s hand and phone away from him. “He’s got points for creativity though, you gotta admit that much.” He let out a huff of amusement from his nostrils at his friends frustration.
“I don’t wanna be a dick, though. I gotta respond with something, right? Cause I know if I don’t block him, he’s just gonna start spewing nasty insults at me. Also, his profile says he’s only two miles away. I do NOT want to accidentally run into him, I am kinda hard to miss in a crowd.” Mina dramatically shook her head back and forth, her bob length neon pink curls swinging to and fro.
Denki lazily shrugged and slouched forward in his chair, grabbing his cup from the end table next to him. He spun the cup around in his hands absentmindedly.
“You could message back and say, ‘What carny did you steal that pick-up line from?’ Or you know, block him. What is the actual chance you’ll see this guy out in public? I highly doubt he’ll have the balls to actually say that to your face. Not to be harsh, Ashido, but your looks alone would make an asshat like that grovel at your feet. It doesn’t help that you wear those yellow contacts all the time.” He held the lidded drink to his lips and took a sip, letting the too hot liquid burn his tongue. Denki could be heard cursing under his breath, and set his drink back on the table.
“I guess you have a point.” Mina sighed. “I’m not even sure why I’m still on this stupid app, It sucks being pretty.” She put her phone back in her pocket and clenched and flexed her fists in a childish grabbing motion towards Denki. “Gimme my drink please.”
Denki obliged the frustrated girls request, for fear that if he didn’t, she was sure to have a fit. “How do you stand to be able to drink cold drinks in this weather?” He exclaimed, pulling his sleeve down to cover his palm as he handed Mina her iced coffee. “it’s nearly winter.”
“Sun or snow, sleet or rain” Mina gestured lazily at the window behind them. “This bitch,” Mina then pointed at herself, fingers fisted and thumb against her chest. “Will be drinking iced coffee.” She grabbed the drink from Denki and cradled it between her hands. Mina put the straw in her mouth, and practically drained the cup of its contents before resting the plastic on her lap.
“Isn't Kirishima supposed to be meeting us here? He’s usually the one waiting on us.” Mina spoke after a moment of quiet between the pair.
“Oh yeah, I got a text from him earlier. Said he was on some date with someone. I didn’t mention it cause I wanted to embarrass him when he got here.” Denki’s shoulders shuddered slightly as he let out a laugh.
“Kiri? On a date? And he didn’t tell me?! I’m more than a little heartbroken” Mina gasped, a fake hurt look on her face.
At the same moment, the pair were startled by a loud rapping noise against the window behind them. Both Mina and Denki turned around to see what it was, and were met with the overly large smile of the man they were just talking about. Kirishima’s dyed red hair was still defying gravity, protected under a large, clear umbrella. He gave a small wave before walking towards the entrance of the coffee shop.
“Hey guys!” Kirishima’s voice was as lively as ever, his smile a small sun contrasting the greens and browns of the coffee shop. “Speak of the devil,” Denki whispered. “-and he shall appear.” Mina finished.
The redhead retracted his umbrella to a closed position and shook it in the entryway before placing it on a nearby hook, with several others. Kirishima took a few shot strides before plopping himself down on a chair and resting his elbows on the table that sat between him and the two friends who were waiting for him.
“Sorry I’m late! I didn’t think the weather was gonna be so gloomy today. Messed me up all day. Did I miss anything?” Kirishima’s gaze looked back and forth between Mina and Denki.
“Hah, nothing too much, just mulling over Mina’s failed love life. That doesn’t seem to be the case with you, though! How was your date?” Denki said while wiggling his eyebrows and giving the red head a half smile.
“It wasn’t a date! Honest. Well I mean, if I tried to explain it, it would sound like one. But it’s nothing like that.” Kirishima said with a sheepish look, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Well, tell us about them! Don’t be so secretive about it.” Mina exclaimed. Taking another sip of her drink and shaking the cup around to loosen the ice.
“I met them on Beehive! You know that app?” Kirishima asked, but Mina and Denki both shook their heads, not saying anything in a silent cue for him to continue. “Well, it’s an app where you can match with people for dating. But it’s also got a ‘friends’ setting on it to! So that’s what I was using it for. And I matched with this guy who only used a screen name ‘Small Might’ cause he was weird about using his name on such a public app. He didn’t even have pictures of himself on his profile! Just some pictures of books and some action figures.”
“Wait a second, you swiped on a guy who didn’t even have a picture of his face! Are you crazy?” Mina raised her voice to the point that the people sitting at a table near them had sent her dirty looks. Mina smiled awkwardly and waved at them in silent apology.
“I wasn’t on the app for dating! It was for friends.” He responded defensively. “So why should it matter what they look like?” Kirishima shrugged his shoulders, not registering the urgency in Mina’s tone.
“It matters if they’re a pervert!” Denki said. “You’re hot, dude, and too nice for your ow good. Anybody could try to take advantage of that!” His voice in a loud, but hushed, whisper.
“Oh, so you mean like that time you used my ‘good looks’ to trick that girl at the bar a few weeks ago to get my number! You practically catfished the poor girl! So not manly.” Kirishima defended.
“Ok, we we’re getting off topic here. We can round back to how awful Kaminari is with girls, once Kiri tells us how he escaped the perv today.” Mina waved her hand back and forth between the two boys, breaking their eye contact.
“Guys, it wasn’t like that! Can I please just tell the rest of my story?” Kirishima face was beginning to flush pink.
Mina rolled her eyes, and Denki crossed his arms and leaned back in his seat with a low ‘huff’.
“As I was saying,” Kirishima cleared his throat, running his hand upwards in his bangs. “So I swiped on him, and he must’ve already seen my profile, cause we automatically matched. So I messaged him first and asked him about where he lived and stuff like that, his profile said he was like 500 miles away.”
“Dude, this has some heavy predatory vibes to it.” Denki said, Reaching for his coffee again. This time it was a much more tolerable sip, and the Denki kept hold of the cup and rested it on his knee.
“Bro.” copying Denki’s tone. “Please just let me finish. The commentary is noted, and appreciated. But not necessary at the moment.” Giving them both a side glance, running his hands down his face and letting out a long sigh. “ I swear this has a happy ending. Just bear with me.”
Mina spared a glance at Denki, noting that he seemed to have simmered down. She smiled up at Kirishima. At the same moment, a barista in a dark gray apron approached the trio, and placed a cup without a lid in front of Kirishima.
“If you asshats can’t learn to keep your voices down, I’m gonna make you sit on the patio.”

“Man, it’s getting cloudy. I hope he’s not gonna cancel.” Slight hands were gripping the phone like a lifeline, A pair of green eyes staring intensely at the screen.
‘The forcast said there was only a twenty percent chance of showers. I really hope it holds off.’ Squinting upwards, Izuku noticed that while the sun was still out, he noticed some clouds in the distance that were starting to thicken. ‘This was the only day Kirishimia-san was free to meet up. It’s the last day of the food truck festival and I wanted us to experience it for the first time together.
Oh, should I text him…?’
Before he was able to tap his thumb to the phone screen, three dots appeared at the bottom of the chat Izuku was on.
Kirishima: I’m almost there! Time got away from me during my workout. I parked about 2 blocks from 17th and Main. Meet me in front of the train station? ;p’
Midoriya: Ok! I’ll be on the look out!
A small blush bloomed across freckled cheeks thinking about a certain redhead at the gym. ‘Bad Izuku!’ He reprimanded himself inside of his head as he lightly slapped his burning face between his hands, phone back in the pocket his one-size-too-big jeans.
