Chapter Text

A clear azure sky looked down on Shi Qingxuan. Birds twittered and the leaves rustled. He was currently lying on the roof of a building, arms resting behind his head. Beside him were a bottle of alcohol and a half-empty cup, both objects permeating the surrounding air with the scent of plum wine. His Wind Master fan had been haphazardly thrown to the side.

If one were to look at him now, he would resemble more of a lazing cat than the honorable Wind Master God. A soft breeze blew by, cautiously caressing his cheeks and billowing his scattered hair. His eyes fluttered opened at half mast, gazing at the passing clouds above. A content sigh escaped his lips.

Seemingly an innocuous day. Or is it?

<Dear Valued Customer, welcome to Reincarnation System. Upon your wonderful performance previously, we would like to offer you a chance to change your fate>

An unfamiliar mechanical voice jolted him out of his reverie, eliciting some kind of deep-seated horror in him despite never once hearing this voice before.

“Who’s there?!” Shi Qingxuan cried out in alarm. He jerked into a sitting position and the tiles of the roof cackled ominously with his sudden action. Perhaps it was because of his past experiences with disembodied voices- the Venerable’s curse still haunts him even today- the trepidation he felt was so strong that it shook him to the core. Moreover, anyone with a semblance of common sense would not trust a voice without a physical body.

Subconsciously, Shi Qingxuan knew that this wasn’t the Venerable of Empty Words. After whipping his head around to survey the area, Shi Qingxuan couldn’t find anyone around. The voice was not heard a second time as well. He gripped his fan harder and tensed. Had it gone away? He was sure he did not imagine it.

<Downloading the user’s previous lives’ memories>

The clear mechanical voice echoed once again and before Shi Qingxuan could react, he doubled over. A barrage of memories assaulted him, making him clutch his head in pain and squeeze his eyes shut. His previous lives flashed as images before him, the scenes flitted about and rotated rapidly. He felt like he was drowning in this torrent of foreign memories.

High-rise modern buildings loomed over him, while the accompanying city life assaulted his ears.

The flashing and blinking of electronic gadgets encompassed him.

Then, there was bamboo hut on a mountain, which surrounded by a field of bamboos.

A gaggle of youths, clad in green, stood in an open field. Their swords were swift and movements precise.

A bright young child came tottering in, bringing him delicious porridge and snacks.

Several older cultivators were sitting together in a room and chatting about inane things.

A male in black and red stood facing him. His crimson eyes alight, gazing at him with fervent desperation.

There was a huge fall, a sense of vertigo as gravity took hold of him. His clothes felt wet, possibly soaked with blood.

The same man was hugging him and whispering intimately to him. It was of apologies and promises. A sense of warmth bloomed in his heart, for a reason that was out of his grasp. Then came a tangled mess of sheets. Their hands tenderly intertwined.

It was said that a person’s memories make up their identity. Shen Yuan wholeheartedly agreed with them. When he came to, he was thankfully still on the roof, not having tumbled down in his painful haze. However, he felt like a completely new person. His thoughts were in a jumbled mess, as he tried to align his memories to any semblance of order. The crashing weight of Shen Yuan, Shen Qingqiu and Shi Qingxuan was making him crosseyed.

It took some time to gather back his wits, huffing and panting miserably. Shi Qingxuan downed a huge gulp of alcohol to aid him. He’s too sober for this!

From what he could piece from the torrent of memories, he had died as Shen Qingqiu a few hundred years after the main story line of The Proud Immortal Demon’s Way had ended. An unfortunate explosion, courtesy of Airplane, from some sort of dimensional artefact that the ex-author was working on.

It was just pure luck, or the lack thereof, that he and Luo Binghe were at his place that day.

If your things were going to explode, at least do it when there’s no visitors okay?! They were innocent!

He hazily recalled Luo Binghe shielding him from the blast, but it was too late for him to do anything substantial. There had been a mad scramble of limbs and a panicked cry of "Shizun!", before the whole world went white.

Distantly, he wondered if Airplane and Mobei Jun escaped unscathed.

He felt himself going hysterical. What the fuck? What the actual hell? He was just planning to enjoy the morning sun today. But somehow he gotten himself into such a weird situation. He suddenly had a whole new identity! Does this kind of thing happen to everyone or was it just him? He scratched his head in exasperation, flopping back down onto the roof. An irritated sigh left his mouth.

“System? What about Binghe? Where’s he?”

<Dear Valued Customer, the protagonist of The Proud Immortal Demon’s Way has died due to the carelessness of the author>

… looks like the protagonist’s golden halo is no use in the face of a horrible author.

“Was he reincarnated? Is this why you’ve returned my memories?”

<Correct. In light of your wonderful performance in The Proud Immortal Demon’s Way, the system has reincarnated you into Heaven Official’s Blessing. Your goal is to get a satisfactory closure for Lord Wind Master and Black Water Devastation Ghost>

… Now that the system said it, Shen Yuan recalled his current life. Shi Qingxuan… Lord Wind Master. The name was familiar, considering Shen Yuan did flipped through the book once out of curiosity. Although what’s with him transmigrating into books as characters with bad endings? At least let him become the protagonist for once QAQ

Suddenly, he had a really bad premonition.

“And… is Black Water Luo Binghe’s reincarnation?”

<Correct valued customer (*´∇`*) due to him being a first time customer, his access to the reincarnation system and his past memories are not unlocked yet. Please aim for a good ending between the Earth and Wind Masters, good luck~>

“Wtf???”

Shen Yuan cannot compute this.

In his previous life, Luo Binghe was the sticky one, clinging onto him and crying out “Shizun” all the time. But this time, he’s the sticky one now! Clinging onto Luo Binghe’s reincarnation and repeatedly calling out “Ming-xiong”.

Is this karma? How the tables have turned!

“System, how do I unlock Binghe’s memories?”

There was a moment of pause. Shi Qingxuan shuddered, knowing that nothing good was to come.

<A good relationship is the key ☆〜(ゝ。∂)>

Wasn’t this too vague?! Earth Master was his best friend already! They have a good relationship!

“Can you be any more specific?” His eye twitched in irritation.

<Mysterious special condition needs to be met in order to unlock the answer>

“Haha- … hahahah …. hahahah!” The Wind Master’s notorious laughter spilled out from his mouth. In hindsight, he’s lucky that his brother was not around to witness the meltdown. It was not exactly a vote of confidence for his sanity.

Initiate plan hugging golden thighs! If he has to live shamelessly, might as well go all out! He’ll stick to Black Water and butter him up. Hopefully Black Water will regain his memories before he makes his move to seek revenge on him and his brother. And maybe by then, Binghe won’t be so mad at this Shizun and his brother for screwing his life over. In fact, hadn’t Luo Binghe said this before? That there’s no such thing as destiny! If not he’ll trample all over it!

Hahahahah this is quite ironic for Binghe too.

… it really is karma isn’t it?

Notes:

Well I was going to end here as a oneshot, but I have quite a lot of ideas for this verse and am in the midst of typing them out. So I will high-chance update this, just not regularly cause of university.
Hua Cheng and Xie Lian comes up in future chapters, front few focuses on BingQiu.
Explicit content (BingQiu) comes later on in future chapters, hopefully I don't chicken out again lol.

Chapter 2: Stage Set And So It Begins

Notes:

I'll be sticking rather closely to canon story line in the first few chapters to set things up. Things will only diverge more in the second half. It makes sense for SQQ to do that too since he's now pretty much traumatized by the butterfly effect from The Proud Immortal Demonic Way lol.

On the plus side, we get to see SQQ's reaction to the shit that's going on around him

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

A few hours later saw Shi Qingxuan still at the rooftop. Sigh, this disciple of his- can he even still call him that?- was so troublesome! This hasn’t change even with reincarnation. It was such a pity that Binghe could not live a peaceful life after reincarnation, and was forced to blackened to this degree. Remorse burned heavily in his chest, considering that Shen Yuan was the indirect cause of this tragedy did not sit well with him.

Shi Qingxuan was still deep in contemplation when his brother found him. Shi Wudu looked exactly like how the book described him to be. The Water Tyrant, proud and haughty, carried himself with an air of dignified self-importance. His sharp features accentuated that fact and even his stern voice complemented his personality.

“What are you doing here? Lazing around?”

“Brother! Hahahahah it is a beautiful day, isn’t it?” Under his brother’s critical eye, Shi Qingxuan fidgeted minutely and resisted the urge to wring his hands.

By now, the sun has dipped and was about to set. The vermillion red sky had splashes of purple and pink in it, making the numerous clouds appear majestic. The glowing sun burned brightly, looking as if it was fighting for a chance to survive the onslaught of clouds. The entire land was dyed in a crimson red and the two Gods’ shadows loomed behind them as they admired the scenery.

“Hmph, you were here the whole day? As expected.”

“Don’t be mean, I do answer prayers and do my job too!” Shi Qingxuan turned to face his brother and gazed forlornly at him.

The thought of telling his brother what had happened crossed his mind, though he quickly tossed it one side. If his brother knew, he would definitely lock him up and hide him from the Earth Master, taking the brunt of his vengeance. Shi Qingxuan also wouldn’t know how to explain to his brother about how he came upon this knowledge.

Under the illumination of the setting sun, Shi Wudu’s face looked slightly haggard, with the eyebags under his eyes. It was an indication of his busy schedule and large workload. His body was taut and Shi Qingxuan could see the tension in his frame. Shi Qingxuan’s eyes softened and he drank the visage in.

How silly... we’re brothers aren’t we? There’s no need for you to bear all the burden just to protect me.

This time round... I’ll protect you.

“Why are you looking at me with that sort of expression? Let’s go!”

“Where are we going? Why not come drink with me? You look like you need it!”

“Who can be so free like you, procrastinating all day long!”

“Ehh, come on! Just one round! Brotherrrrr~”

~.~.~.~

They, in fact, did not go drinking. The Water Master had dragged him back to their palace to do up reports and other administrative work. Now, Shen Yuan had lots of experience in that area as Shen Qingqiu. Being a peak lord did not exempt him from paperwork. But that was years ago! He was the Wind Master now. Staying true to his title, he was free as the wind and not tied down by boorish paperwork. He was well-known for his lackadaisical attitude by other Gods.

After sitting down and doing his work dutifully for a couple of hours, he was bored. Rightfully so, it’s so dull! The words and numbers swam in his vision, causing him to face-plant on the table and groan internally. Cracking open his right eye minisculely, he glanced at his brother at the far end of the room. Shi Wudu looked focused on his work and oblivious to the world around him. Shi Wudu would probably leave in an hour or so to Pei Ming’s place, but Shi Qingxuan couldn’t sit for another hour longer. He’ll die!

Sorry brother! I said I will save you, but that’s from Black Water and not paperwork!

With a slight swish of his Wind Master fan, he created a duplicate of himself and snuck away. Once he was safely outside, he threw his hands up in the air. Success! He whooped in delight and started to contact his friends through the spiritual array, sending out an invitation to go drinking at their usual spot while walking towards his destination.

Unbeknownst to him, a faint sigh echoed in the building he just vacated. His supposedly focused brother threw an irritated glance at the duplicate, though his eyes glittered with fondness and slight mirth.

Shi Qingxuan was the first one to reach, but everyone else arrived swiftly after. It was all cheers and greetings as they booked a room and ordered alcohol. Shen Yuan decided that he was going to drink himself dead tonight! He can worry about paperwork and his impending doom tomorrow.

As Shen Yuan, he had never gotten into the habit of drinking as he had to prioritise his health. Furthermore, how could he read his web novels if he was drunk! As Shen Qingqiu, he could never drink openly as he had a reputation to uphold. How could he still be the lofty Qing Jing Peak Lord if he was seen drunk red and giggling incoherently. Shen Qingqiu could only indulge in small cups once in a while. But now as Shi Qingxuan, he had no qualms. This bad habit had been cultivated all his life before his past memories returned. Of course it won’t be easy to break!

Cup after cup, the faces in the room slowly turned red. The good cheer slowly dwindled as some toppled from the drink, while others grumbled about the heat in the room. Snores could be heard as some succumbed to sleep. It was already late into the night, the silvery moon hung dainty in the cloudless sky.

As Shi Qingxuan downed his final cup, he wobbled slightly in his seat. Ahh, he was really drunk.

As he was dozing off, a venomous voice hissed out beside him, “You will never see your brother again!”

With a jolt, he sprang up and turned wildly in the room. His frenzied eyes searched every nook and cranny, trying to spot the offender. Alas, all he could see were the slumped figures of his friends. “Who said that! Where are you!”

That voice! It was the Venerable of Empty Words!

Instantly sobered, Shi Qingxuan dashed out of the building, as if fleeing for his life. To keep up appearances, he went to Pei Ming’s place to check on his brother and only visibly relax when he saw him together with Ling Wen and Pei Ming. Black Water might be keeping an eye on him, so better to cover all of his bases. In the next few days, the Wind Master appeared to be wound up tight to the rest of Heaven, jumping at any slight noises.

With a heavy sigh, Shi Qingxuan knew that the curtains of his arc has drawn, and it was time for him to play it to the end. Black Water has started on his revenge.

~.~.~.~

The Wind Master never knew why the Earth Master always relented to go with him on his frequent misadventures. After all, the Supreme supposedly wanted to enact revenge on his brother and him. Why bother playing around with the younger brother? Perhaps the vengeful bastard loved the irony of the situation.

“Ming-xiong! You gotta help me!” The doors to the Earth Master’s palace slammed open. Footsteps of the uninvited visitor echoed loudly. The Earth Master was sitting at his study desk and stacks of scrolls and documents were piled up in front of him. He held a thick scroll and was in the middle of reading it. Unflinchingly, the Earth Master did not bother to acknowledge Shi Qingxuan.

“Ming-xiongggg! You can’t ditch your best friend when he needs help! Let’s go to Puji Shrine together.” Shi Qingxuan obnoxiously wheedled him, draping himself over the other party’s shoulders. The Earth Master glanced at him and continued reading his scroll, seemingly intent on ignoring him.

“Come on! It’s a life or death situation. Maybe Xie Lian will be able to help,” Shi Qingxuan explained further. “You won’t leave me for the dead, won’t you? As a bonus, we don’t even need to change our genders this time round. I promise!”

Of course Shi Qingxuan would say that! Imagine if after regaining his memories, Luo Binghe remembers Shen Yuan coaxing him to genderswap all the time. The eternal shame! He would rather dig a hole and die inside. In addition, knowing that his best friend here was the one that wanted to kill him helped. Which sane person would ask their potential murderer to change gender with you? No way!

At this, Ming-xiong huffed and dropped the scroll. The Earth Master’s face contorted into a grimace, as if he was dealing with the most insufferable person of all time. “Make it quick. I still have to deal with these reports.”

“Ming-xiong! You’re the best!” Shi Qingxuan cheered, a bright smile blooming on his face. Inwardly, he grumbled- isn’t this all your fault anyway!

~.~.~.~

They made it to Puji Shrine in quick time. They passed by Qi Rong without acknowledging him and promptly walked in on Hua Cheng doing the dishes…It was a rather awkward situation to walk in on.

“The Earth Master looks lively,” Hua Cheng smiled, baring his teeth in a hostile manner, which looked exceedingly hilarious because he was still doing the dishes.

“The Demon King also looks quite free,” Earth Master retorted back. The palpable tension in the room increased once the greetings were made. Shi Qingxuan could almost feel the electricity crackling between the two Supremes.

“Leave, I don’t care what you’re here for. And don’t come back,” Hua Cheng icily glared over, acidly threatening them to leave.

“It wasn’t my intention to come here.” The Earth Master stonily replied.

Shi Qingxuan wailed internally in his heart. Ming-xiong, I applaud you for being able to brush off any responsibility from one Supreme to another. In actual fact, you’re just pushing the blame to me, aren’t you!

Externally, Shi Qingxuan’s expression remained calm and friendly. Waving his fan around, he tried to diffuse the situation. “Mah mah! Let begones be bygones. All of us are friends here. It’ll be troublesome for His Highness if we fought here too.”

Ming-xiong wisely agreed with him and stopped glaring at Hua Cheng, probably having no intention of fighting him anyway. Hua Cheng on the other hand was rather reluctant, but upon hearing that he would cause trouble for Xie Lian, begrudgingly backed off. The atmosphere became slightly more bearable, and Xie Lian shot him a grateful look.

Inside the Puji Shrine, the quartet sat around a rickety table. Shi Qingxuan tactfully ignored the pot of dubious content this time round. If he eats this, he’ll really die! To lower himself to eat the black contents of the pot after having tasted Binghe’s cooking was really unthinkable. Not that he was going to admit it, but he purposely ate before coming.

Moreover, didn’t Black Water faint after eating His Highness’s cooking in the book? He actually fainted! A supreme ah! He even fell in the face of this food. Hua Cheng was really admirable to eat this cooking with a straight face. Such devotion! If Luo Binghe dared to bring such quality of food to this Shizun, he would bar him from the bed for a month!

“So, why did Wind Master and Earth Master come here?” Xie Lian asked, breaking him out of his musing. Shi Qingxuan immediately got into his role and narrated his woeful past to the trio - one who earnestly wanted to help him, one who was the cause of his misery currently, and one who didn’t give a damn. It was slightly nerve-wrecking.

“And so! Your Highness, do you have any solutions in mind?” Shi Qingxuan asked, after explaining the incident that occurred a few days before.

Tapping his chin thoughtfully, Xie Lian replied, “Hmm I have met two Venerables before, but it seems like the one following you is on another level entirely. Why not tell your brother?”

“No way! His third Heavenly Tribulation is coming. I can’t be the cause of his distraction. I’ll take care of this matter by myself.”

A look of understanding passed Xie Lian’s eyes. “What does Lord Wind Master intend to do then?”

“The Venerable is quite elusive. I was going to investigate its past kills and see if I could find a pattern on its operations. But my brother blocked me from doing so,” Shi Qingxuan bluntly said.

“San Lang do you have any ideas?” Xie Lian questioned the man beside him.

Once prompted, Crimson Rain Sought Flower propped his head on his palm and leisurely said, “When the Reverend of Empty Words targets someone, it’ll be malicious enough to also affect the target’s family and friends.”

“Ming-xiong! Then you will have to watch out as well! You’re my best friend after all!” On cue, Shi Qingxuan turned to face Earth Master and exclaimed.

In the corner of his eyes, he saw Hua Cheng’s lips twitching. Huh, he’s really deriving pleasure from this farce. Ming-xiong, on the other hand, scooted away from him. One could easily infer the word “unwilling” from his countenance.

Shi Qingxuan pouted visibly at that action and continued, “I was planning to book the Imperial Capital’s best room at their best restaurant and indulge myself wholly till it comes out again. But the last time it came out, I couldn’t catch a glimpse of it at all. Since Your Highness has more experience than me, will you be willing to tag along?”

There was a slight pause as Xie Lian looked uncertainly at Hua Cheng.

“If gege is going, why not bring me along? I have never seen a Venerable before, so I’m quite curious.” Hua Cheng quirked a smile. So smooth! Binghe, you better be taking down notes so that you can learn from them!

“That’s great! Let’s go right now! With so many of us, we will definitely catch the Venerable!!”

~.~.~.~

Shi Qingxuan felt an incoming headache. Everything was going to go down to hell and he still didn’t have a proper plan! His grip on his fan tightened, causing his knuckles to turn white in exertion. While Xie Lian bustled around his shrine to prepare for the trip, Shi Qingxuan took deep breaths to compose himself. The Earth Master was drawing the Distance Shortening Array by the entrance, which Shi Qingxuan knows will lead to his doom.

“System, how far am I till hitting the requirement of unlocking Luo Binghe’s memories?” He poked mentally at the system.

<Extremely far. Do work harder to achieve a better relationship with the other user>

Shi Qingxuan wailed internally in despair. “Any chance you will tell me the special condition now?”

Silence prevailed.

Metaphorical tears flowed down his eyes. System! You always stay the same! As useless and unreliable as before! His fan snapped opened as he started to fan himself. The fan was hardly visibly as he fanned himself harshly.

“I’m ready to go now. Lord Wind Master, do calm yourself down.”

“I’m calm! I’m calm!” He stood up rigidly and faced the door of the shrine. “Ming-xiong you’re done too?”

Earth Master nodded and replied, “Let’s go.”

Shi Qingxuan took the candle and blew out the light. In the darkness, the four shuffled together in front of the array.

“The place you go to will become your worst nightmare!”

Chaos descends.

Chapter 3: Small Steps at A Time

Notes:

Slowly building up~ I described things a bit more briefly in this chapter, as I want to get to the main part faster. In next few chapters I should be able to get into the flesh of this fic already

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The moment that sentence was uttered, Xie Lian vigorously kicked opened the door, enveloping the four in light once more. However, the array has been set and once the door opened, they no longer were at Puji Shrine.

“That was the Venerable of Empty Words?” Xie Lian asked.

“How can that be! There’s only the four of us just now, we would have known if there was an extra person!” Shi Qingxuan retorted, internally accusing Ming-xiong who was standing innocently beside him. He paused and took a look around, muttering, “Well, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.”

“Does anyone know where we are? The Imperial Capital doesn’t look like this,” Hua Cheng asked, after he noticed the unfamiliar surroundings as well.

Shi Qingxuan tuned out the dialogue between the trio, who were discussing the possible reasons for the failure of the array. Barbed accusations were veiled thinly under polite words. Pointed remarks of sabotage were exchanged and hurled indiscriminately. Well, they’re not that off the mark.

Gazing at the humble village, a sense of melancholy filled Shi Qingxuan’s chest. So this was where Luo Binghe grew up in this life. The village had a different aura to it compared to the Imperial City. There were less people for one, and the buildings here were more dilapidated. The citizens were wearing clothes of lower quality, and some even riddled with patch marks and holes. However, it wasn’t any less welcoming as the citizens’ laughter and good cheer could warm the hearts of any travelers.

Suddenly, a sense of failure filled Shi Qingxuan. Wasn’t he supposed to protect and nurture his disciple? And yet not only did he fail to fulfil that duty, he was actually the cause of his disciple’s great suffering this life. This was not even about his demon heritage now. Binghe could have had a normal and happy life, if not for the interference of his elder brother. An immense guilt burned in his chest. It felt as if he was at the Immortal Alliance Conference once more, single-handedly stabbing and pushing his disciple into the Abyss.

It sickened him.

“Lord Wind Master are you alright?” Xie Lian’s voice pierced through the emotional turmoil he was in.

“Calm down,” Ming Yi’s voice joined in.

Blinking rapidly, Shi Qingxuan pasted a smile on his face to assure the other two. “I’m fine, I’m fine.” And I’m so sorry…

“Let’s not fight between ourselves alright?” Shi Qingxuan gestured to the run down building opposite the street. “It seems like that’s a Temple of Wind and Water, why not go there to have a look?”

They acquiesced.

Walking into the temple, they could not believe the horrendous state it was in. Filled with cobwebs and dust, the air musty with neglect. Even the statues on the altar were damaged. However, it did not take a genius to notice that the statues were not worn down due to age. Someone had cleanly sliced the statues, intentionally committing the blasphemous act.

Shi Qingxuan picked up the Wind Master’s statue and gently brushed the dirt away on it. Speechless, he looked at the missing limbs on his statue. Was this supposed to be a threat? Ming-xiong, I’ll have you know that canon Luo Binghe had threatened to turn him into a human stick. Missing an arm and a leg wasn’t all that bad compared to that. You should probably cut away the other two limbs as well, now that’s something to fear. Haha

If seeing the statue made Shi Qingxuan remember the extreme pain from the penalty dream, where Bing-ge tore off his limbs, he would never admit it. And his hands were definitely not trembling, no way sir!

Noticing that Shi Qingxuan was rather upset after seeing the abuse to his and his brother’s temple, Xie Lian quickly ushered them out while consoling him.

The four changed their attire to blend in and went to the biggest restaurant in town. The waiter there being helpful enough to answer their questions and introduce the Fire Social to them. Just on time, the troupe arrived and started their performance. Spectators gathered and their delight was apparent. Gasping and wowing at appropriate times.

However for Shi Qingxuan, knowing that the main character of the story told was his husband really dampened his mood. It was one thing to read the story as a third party and another to read it as an involved individual.

It left a bitter taste in his mouth.

Glancing at the Earth Master from the corner of his eyes, Ming-xiong was watching the performance attentively. Though now that Shi Qingxuan knew his identity, he could see the tightness in his eyes and his lips pursing at the unsavory parts. His eyes were a little unfocused as well, as if looking into a far distant memory. It pained the Shen Qingqiu part of him, longing to gather his husband into his arms and comfort him. Although Luo Binghe may not know it, he actually has his Shizun around his finger. His puppy eyes could soften his heart, his tears could bring him to his knees and his tormented face could make him self-destruct.

This has not change even now.

As if in a haze, he went through the motions of nodding and listening to the waiter that Hua Cheng called back to explain the story of the Fire Social. All of them made guesses as to why the Venerable of Empty Words had brought them here. Perhaps they were so deep in discussion that they had let down their guards, but when the Venerable surfaced, none of them could do anything.

“Your closest friend and family will all die tragically because of you!” A booming voice came from below, laughing as it spewed out malicious curses.

Shi Qingxuan’s face crumpled and he slammed his fist on the table. He knew it would be futile to jump down as there was still a large crowd of performers below, so he merely strode to the window aggressively to find the source of the voice. Scanning the crowd, sure enough, he could find no one suspicious. Internally, he berated the culprit as well. Hell, why is your M tendency so strong that it’s still incurable after reincarnation. Is cursing yourself that fun? You’re my best friend now, Ming-xiong!

“Lord Wind Master, it’s no use looking for it. It’s probably gone by now.” Xie Lian pulled him back from the window, while Hua Cheng nodded sagely behind Xie Lian.

Huffing, Shi Qingxuan suggested that they leave. While their plan of attracting the entity via drinking had worked, they didn't manage to capture it. It seemed more viable to try another method to deal with this. As they walked with heavy footsteps back to his temple, Shi Qingxuan finally remembered about his bootlicking plan so that Luo Binghe can regain his memories. Well, that's one avenue that he can continue to pursue. No harm done trying.

Snapping his fan open, Shi Qingxuan chortled out, “Ming-xiong! Maybe you shouldn’t be my best friend for now. Wait till I get rid of this thing!”

Earth Master’s reply came without missing a beat, “Who’s your best friend? Not me.”

“How could you! It’s not nice to ditch someone when things get difficult!” He wailed dramatically and did something he instantly regretted. With a flick of his wrist, his fan closed and went down hitting the top of the Earth Master’s head. All in one move.

He froze.

Earth Master looked at him owlishly, uncomprehending what just happened. Hua Cheng blinked at them in the distance, the devil probably finding all of this hilarious.

“...”

"..."

“Remove that.”

Realising that his fan was still on top of the other party's head, Shi Qingxuan frantically retrieved his hand, as if he had touched hot iron. AHHHHHHHHH! I’m so sorrry, please don’t kill me! It was habit! Habit!

“Ahem. HAHHAHAhahaha this is why you shouldn’t denounce me. Ming-xiong, you can’t be too cruel to your best friend!” Shi Qingxuan spewed out a jumble of words, trying to smooth over the situation. The offending spiritual device now being used to fan his face in embarrassment for the slip-up.

While they bickered, the four had reached back the temple. Xie Lian being a kind-hearted soul passed him some earplugs and set up a communication array for them. "If you can't hear the Venerable's curse, then it would not affect you," so he said. Crude, but effective. Though practicality wise, it won’t work since you’ve already invited the offender into our array… Said individual also has my private array’s verbal password to contact me.

Nontheless, Shi Qingxuan stuffed the earplugs into his ears and went about busying in his temple. He cleaned the dust and cobwebs, righted the furniture, and more importantly, fixed back the two divine statues. He plopped down onto the floor with a satisfied grin once he was done. The temple looked to be in a better state. In front of the altar, Xie Lian had already started a campfire, and the four convened there.

There was an awkward silence as the four avoided eye contact, darting their eyes around the temple. “Is there anything we can do to pass time?” His own voice cut through the silence.

“At this stage you can still think of entertainment?” Ming Yi’s voice in the communication array had a hint of incredulity.

“Well, it’s not like we can wait forever like this. Does Your Highness have any suggestion?”

On cue, Xie Lian pounced on the opportunity that he had given. His highness suggested a die roll game and set up the rules for it. It was a simple and straightforward gambling game, resembling "truth or dare" from the modern era. Though Shi Qingxuan has to admit, His highness was pretty smart! This trap would have worked if it was a normal Venerable of Empty Words that they were dealing with- their weakness of not being able to say the truth consecutively three times can be exploited easily here. Too bad they’re dealing with Black Water and not a Venerable.

As expected, the first round was the Earth Master’s and his win. Xie Lian’s luck at dice was really just too bad! Tactfully not pointing out that fact, he rubbed his chin and contemplated what to ask them to do. He could make them do anything! This was considered to be a significant step for Hua Cheng and Xie Lian’s relationship. Why disrobe just the outer layer of their clothes? Canon said so, but this reincarnator here now has the power!

But if he makes the two disrobe more, it really was leaving them with no face! After all, Xie Lian had came down to help him out, Shi Qingxuan would feel bad if he bullied Xie Lian too much. In addition, Binghe may get jealous next time if he remembers his Shizun asking other people to strip…

He gulped audibly, better not do that then. “Why don’t you two french kiss then?” Shi Qingxuan laughed out merrily, “We won’t look if you don’t want us to, but no cheating!”

“Wind Master???” Xie Lian turned an embarrassing shade of red.

“Why are you so shy for? Didn’t you two kiss already?” Shi Qingxuan remembered Xie Lian implicitly confessing in front of the many Heavenly Officials that he already had kissed someone during the ghost fetus debacle. It didn’t take a reader to figure out who he had kissed.

The Earth Master snorted and turned around, supposedly out of disgust. He probably didn’t wanted to see another fellow Supreme snogging someone.

“Come come, I’m waiting. You guys won’t back out right?”

Hua Cheng looked at Xie Lian and shrugged his shoulders. Shi Qingxuan noticed him mouthing the words ‘it isn’t my fault, gege’. Ha! How sly, as if you harbour no thoughts of losing on purpose? Hua Cheng probably pacified Xie Lian in their private communications, for the two looked to be in agreement. They inched closer and slowly planted their lips together. Xie Lian’s eyes were squeezed firmly shut and his face looked as if it was about to spontaneously combust.

Shi Qingxuan turned away and started to fan himself. Better to give them some privacy, he wasn’t a voyeur. Though their heavy breathing and panting kind of discomforted him… Maybe he should have just chosen something else for them to do. Living so shamelessly these few hundred years as the Wind Master had really ruined him.

Where was his dignity as a Peak Lord?!

After a minute, the four convened again. Xie Lian still had not recovered from the earlier stunt, looking as if he ran a marathon. On the other hand, Hua Cheng’s face was unreadable. Though a hint of smugness could be seen from the slight quirk of his mouth.

“Round two!”

And of course, it was their win again. Hua Cheng was such a sly bastard. Shi Qingxuan saw Xie Lian turning to Hua Cheng and indignantly glaring at him.

“HAHAhahahhah! Don’t worry so much, since it was an order the last round, this round will be questions. Ming-xiong! You ask them then.”

The events went the same as the book, with the two on the losing team talking about their life’s greatest regrets and fear. Black Water really knew how to ask such deep questions. What a joy to play truth or dare with.

In the next round, things finally gotten back on track as the other team won. Though as Shi Qingxuan had predicted, Xie Lian’s questions did not work and in the end sown seeds of discord within them. Ming Yi’s hand shot out to grab Xie Lian’s throat, after he had answered all three questions correctly. While Hua Cheng had stopped his attack, things escalated quickly as the two sides jumped up and stared warily at each other, suspicious of each other’s motive. Shen Yuan had no idea where Black Water had gotten the guts to attack Xie Lian in front of Hua Cheng. Isn't that wanting a death wish???

The atmosphere in the temple grew extremely tense, as the two groups stood on either side of the crackling fire. The two disguised Supremes glared at each other without backing down, while Xie Lian looked as if he was trying to pacify Hua Cheng, though to no avail.

Since Shi Qingxuan did not jump into the fray, he was the first to notice the change in atmosphere in his temple. An eerie breeze blew in and caused the flames to flicker tentatively. The shadows casted around them suddenly seemed darker and heavier. It looked like trouble was brewing.

“Stop fighting! Look at the statues!” He blasted open the communication array and told the other three. Their heads turned unanimously as one, and noticed the blood streaming down the faces of the two statues.

Damn… it really looked weird seeing his own face crying tears of blood. The blood accumulated and started to pool on the ground. It curved unnaturally into an upside down word.

“Don’t look! It’s for you!” Xie Lian warned him, as Ming Yi blasted the two statues into pieces.

Of course Shi Qingxuan was not looking at the words, but rather was gaping Earth Master's audacity. Do you really feel that great doing this in front of me? Fuck! How rude! Isn’t this the same as slapping the person you’re with in the face? There’s other ways to magic away the words as well! Who are you acting for? He’s half tempted to let his brother know what Black Water did to their statues so that he can get some semblance of revenge.

This petty feeling exacerbated when his establishment plate fell with a loud clatter, breaking upon impact. The words slowly twisting to form new ones, most likely nothing friendly. To destroy the shrine of a God in front of their face, it's basically equivalent to spitting at them and then cordially pointing the middle finger. Such disrespect!

“Close your eyes!” Xie Lian urged him again, explaining in the array that the Venerable has changed to writing since he could not hear now.

Fuck! Now I’m both blind and deaf. What am I even supposed to do? It’s worse than being an invalid as this was self-inflicted! Luo Binghe! You better treat this Shizun with more respect when you get back your memories!

Being blind and deaf, Shi Qingxuan did not know that a whole crowd of people was swarming outside, passing by the temple in a blur. The night parade of the Fire Social had started. It looked terrifying as everyone was in makeup, depicting themselves to be horrifyingly injured or having monstrous features. In the evening light, their looks were completed, looking their part as devious beasts. As the crowd noticed them in the temple, they all swarmed in, fishing for monetary rewards from travelers.

Shi Qingxuan did not know what was happening, but he was being stomped on and pushed about. It was exceedingly uncomfortable and he faintly recalled a roller-coaster ride that he took once. Suddenly, he remembered an important turning point of the story line, wasn’t he about to be led away by a mysterious person? And this led to his powers being sucked dry, forcing him to live as a weak helpless mortal for the foreseeable future.

Not waiting to be bullied, Shi Qingxuan surreptitiously cracked opened his eyes and ducked into a small hidden corner of his temple. Waving his Wind Master fan, he created a duplicate of himself stumbling in the middle of the temple, getting jostled by the crowd. In his hiding place, he clamped down on his presence and slowed his breathing.

Sure enough, an unknown person came by and grabbed his duplicate by the hand and led him out of the temple. Luckily, his would be captor did not notice anything amiss. If his duplicate was good enough to trick his brother, surely it'll be enough to fool others!

Shi Qingxuan cheered at the success of his plan. He managed to avoid being played like a fool. No need for the additional drama. His mood slightly lifted, as he realised that he also saved Xie Lian the trouble of body swapping with him, and abusing his Wind Master fan as a melee weapon. He patted his precious fan in relief and lamented about the inelegant ways of martial gods.

Suddenly, there was a loud boom overhead, accompanied by a searing white light. Both were so over the top that Shi Qingxuan could notice it even with his eyes closed and ears stuffed. Opening his eyes, he blinked away the white dots in his vision and tilted his head up. He gaped in horror. The evening sky hung above, giving him a clear view of the setting sun. He could not process this scene.

Ahhhh! My temple’s roof!!!

I forgot it was going to be blown away by Xie Lian!!

Fuck! I should have bullied him more just now.

How detestable… QAQ

Notes:

And so SQQ finally makes a major change to the plot.
Wonder how that will affect the story line ;P

Chapter 4: The Best Plans Can Go Awry

Notes:

I've changed some details in the previous chapters, since I realise that many people have not read the arc, and were quite lost. I added more details to the context, though not a lot since I don't want to bore those who know what's going on as well.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Shi Qingxuan was still staring blankly at his temple’s roof, or a lack thereof, when the communication array boomed with Xie Lian’s voice. “Lord Wind Master? Where are you? Did you leave the temple?”

It broke him out of his stupor. He took a few moments before replying. If asked, he would deny that it was from shock, but a tactical move. He had to make sure his duplicate passed the Distance Shortening Array before speaking, lest Black Water attempts to catch him again. “Your Highness, you sound really loud suddenly! Is it because of the adrenaline from destroying my temple?” He snidely asked.

“... sorry,” Xie Lian abashedly muttered, after fixing the volume of his voice.

“Where are you?” Ming Yi’s voice curtly echoed over in the array. Ha! You’re going to be in for a big surprise Ming-xiong!

“Still in my temple,” Shi Qingxuan tried his best to keep the smugness out of his voice. “Someone tried to bring me away, but I sent a duplicate with him and hid.”

“What?! Did you see who it was? The Venerable?” Xie Lian’s concerned voice came next.

“Of course not! I didn’t dare to open my eyes fully so I didn’t see their face. Let’s regroup first, shall we? Are you all outside the temple?”

The three voiced their affirmation and agreed to gather first. After crawling out from his hiding space, Shi Qingxuan let out a sigh of relief and patted his clothes to rid of the dust. The crowd by now have subsided after the extreme light show by Xie Lian. No one would want to stay after witnessing that devastating destruction of property unless they have a death wish. Hence, Shi Qingxuan could easily make his way out of the temple, now in a worse state than before, not bothering to close his eyes anymore.

The three were standing on the other end of the street, two having bland faces, while Xie Lian was the only one that looked mildly concerned. After spotting Shi Qingxuan who was walking leisurely over, Xie Lian stopped pacing about and let out a loud exhale. “Thank goodness, you’re alright!

“I’m fine, no worries, Your Highness!”

“What about the Venerable? Should we follow?”

Shi Qingxuan hummed out after Xie Lian voiced that question. Indeed, should they follow? By now the duplicate and the Venerable would be at the Terrace of Cascading Wine. Initially Shi Qingxuan wanted to avoid that area because he did not want to end up a powerless mortal who couldn’t defend himself for the foreseeable future. But now having regrouped, they would have the numbers to fight off the Venerable, unless Ming-xiong decided to do something drastic.

Was there any benefit in going there? Arguably not. There wasn’t a single benefit to be gained there. That particular location was obsolete once Shen Yuan regained his memories, for the original Shi Qingxuan only learnt about his brother’s deception there. He said dismissively, “I can’t trace my duplicate anymore. I’m guessing it went out of range and has dissipated. I don’t think we’ll be able to follow.”

Thankfully the reincarnation system was more lax than the transmigration system. If it was the latter, it would have already flashed red at his attempts to avoid important plot lines.

“Say, today has been rather chaotic, we should probably call it a day. There’s nothing we can do now since we don’t know where the Venerable went. Waiting for it foolishly here won’t work too.” Shi Qingxuan suggested. The other three saw reason in his logic and did not argue with him. Before they made to part ways, Shi Qingxuan reminded them not to say anything to his brother again. He couldn’t have him worry about this when his Heavenly Tribulation was round the corner.

The Earth Master was the first to leave, citing the reports he has to do still. Xie Lian and Hua Cheng left next, after Xie Lian had enough of fussing over him, especially since Shi Qingxuan moved to remove the earplugs.

Under the moonlight, his lone silhouette stood rigidly as he looked at the backs of the departing ghost king and fallen prince. Shi Qingxuan sighed.

He suddenly felt weary.

~.~.~.~

“What were you up to today?” The Water Master spared no pleasantries as he barged into the Water and Wind Palace. Shi Qingxuan was lazily draped over the chair, wasting paper by randomly doodling memes and writing English that was indecipherable to anyone else.

“Whatever do you mean? I was out with friends!”

The Water Master scowled at that blatant lie. “Stop pretending, do you think I won’t know if you don’t say anything? Making such a big disturbance at our temple, obviously I would find out.”

“... Just a little of fun, nothing to worry about.”

The Water Master’s eyebrow curved up at that. “Oh? That was not what Ling Wen had said.”

Curses! Wasn’t Ling Wen’s palace busy? Why the sudden change of heart and amazing efficiency? Shi Qingxuan bemoaned at his horrible luck and the even more horrible outcome from this confrontation. “I brought people along with me! It’s not like the Venerable would have harmed me.”

“One fallen God, one Demon King, and one Elemental God with weaker powers than you. How reassuring!”

Hey! I’ll let you know that the fallen God has the unbeatable protagonist aura around him. The Demon King is second to none on land, and the last one you’re mocking is your potential executioner! But of course Shi Qingxuan couldn’t say that out loud, so he could only aggrievedly keep quiet.

Seeing that he wasn’t going to talk back anymore, the Water Master calmed down a little. “Stay in the palace obediently for the next few days. Once I finish the Heavenly Tribulation, we’ll go settle this together.”

...

“Stop pouting! It’s for your own good!”

Shi Qingxuan pouted even further, aiming his watery puppy eyes at his brother. Maybe his puppy eyes weren’t as strong as Binghe’s, it didn’t work at all. His brother rolled his eyes and whacked him on the head instead.

How unfair!

~.~.~.~

Shi Qingxuan was prepared to spend his next few days idly at home. He lamented the lack of good fiction in this world as he lazed around his room. He groaned for the umpteenth time and flopped on his bed. Muffling his screams into the pillow, he wiggled his limbs like a jellyfish.

Entertainment in this era was akin to watching paint dry. There wasn’t a clingy Binghe beside him to make things interesting too. Ahhh, he really needed more stimulating things to do or he’ll really die by the time his brother comes back from his Tribulation.

Just as he wished, a sudden thud below his bed stopped him in his tracks.

… did he really wanted to know who the intruder was?

He clenched his Wind Master fan tightly, and with an exaggerated swipe, he commanded the wind to blow out the intruder beneath his bed. The wind gladly obeyed and the gust of wind threw the intruder out into the open. Familiar black robes greeted his eyes. “Ming-xiong?” Shi Qingxuan inelegantly gaped at him. Why was he here? So suspiciously at that!

The figure by now has stood up and regained his bearings. He did not look the slightest bit contrite despite sneaking into another official’s palace without permission. In fact, he looked disgruntled at the injustice that was done to him. He harrumphed and tidied his clothes and hair. “I came here to save you, but got this in return for my efforts. Hpmh!”

Are you sure you don’t have any ulterior motive for coming here? I’ll gladly throw myself out of Heaven if you came here purely out of good will!

Putting on a resplendent smile, Shi Qingxuan jumped off the bed and slung an arm around his neck.“Uwahh I’m sorry Ming-xiong, don’t be angry! You’re the best!”

“Are we leaving? We can get back before your brother finishes.”

Now logically, Shi Qingxuan knew that it was a horrible horrible idea to follow his supposedly best friend. Like Airplane-bro’s horrible plot holes kind of horrible. After all, which victim will willingly walk to their demise? But he was just too bored! Just a little bit won’t hurt right?

So shoving the logical side of him one side, he allowed his instant gratification side to dominate and take over. Plus, he reasoned, if he didn’t comply, Black Water was certain to use force on him. Better go willingly then! Shi Qingxuan was proud to say that he followed Ming-xiong out. They went into the tunnel that was dug by him, not meeting any interference. After crawling for a while, they emerged at the Earth Master’s Palace, where a Distance Shortening Array stood.

How prepared!

“Ming-xiong, where are we going?”

“The village of Rain Master.”

“Makes sense! In case my brother finds out, we can rely on her to help out.”

The duo covered the gaping hole, before walking forward to the array. Now that he was standing in front of a Distance Shortening Array, Shi Qingxuan’s last remaining brain cell started to work again. He was sweating bullets and regretting his life decisions. The weight of the risk he was taking finally dawned on him and he gulped nervously. The array probably has been rigged already right?

Seeing that Ming-xiong was staring unnervingly at him, he laughed awkwardly. “Ming-xiong, did you practice your array drawing skills when we came back? This won’t send us to someplace weird right?”

There was no reply. The silence dragged on, until it became uncomfortable. He fidgeted slightly under his gaze, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.

Out of the blue, his wrist was captured tightly. He startled badly, crying out, “Ming-xiong?”

“Are you still going to pretend?”

Huh???

Dark unfathomable eyes gazed at him, an obvious hint of anger underneath the veneer of calm. Shen Yuan thought extremely hard about why Black Water suddenly deviated from the plot. This wasn’t supposed to happen! He immediately slashed out the option of Luo Binghe regaining his memories. The obnoxious system would have prompted something by now.

The only other reason was that this was a reaction due to the change in plot he had made. And the only major change he made so far was the duplicat- oh… OHH.. OH NO!

The original Shi Qingxuan had no reason to create a duplicate! He had no reason to suspect anything amiss, unknowing that someone would be coming for him. That’s why in canon he was tricked so badly, following the stranger naively. He didn’t even know the one guiding him was not one of the three until communications restarted in the array. Shi Qingxuan would not have made any precaution, unless he already had doubts on one of the three. Only then he would have thought of creating a duplicate, even before making contact with the Venerable!

And he clearly made the duplicate before it was apparent that there was anything wrong! Wasn't this just showcasing to the world that he knew what was going to happen?!?! He might as well get a mic and scream into it that Shi Qingxuan knew his supposed best friend was out to utterly destroy him!

Black Water probably didn’t made his move any earlier because he wasn’t sure if Shi Qingxuan had doubted Xie Lian or Hua Cheng, so he devised this escape attempt to confirm it. And Shi Qingxuan failed spectacularly, giving himself away. Black Water now knew that Shi Qingxuan knew more than he had let on. The original Shi Qingxuan treated Ming-xiong as his best friend, he wouldn’t be so reluctant to go into the array! Even if he may mock Ming-xiong’s array drawing skills, he would never hesitate to enter, clearly seeing it as a means of escape from his confinement.

Black Water wasn’t an idiot, he can easily deduce a conclusion from his weird actions! And the most logical conclusion for Black Water to make was that his own identity was exposed, but the Wind and Water Masters did not spread the news in fear of their dirty laundry being aired. The grave sin of changing people's fate would most likely lead them to a permanent exile.

Such misfortune! What bad luck! His only advantage of foreknowledge came around to bite him in the ass. He really wanted to slap himself! Berating himself aggressively, he tried to keep a calm facade on his face. Trepidation filled his entire being, every fiber of him screamed at him to flee immediately. Things were definitely heading south now.

What an oversight! Foolish! How dare you still claim to be an ex-Peak Lord!

The crushing grip on his wrist tightened further, his bones creaking under pressure. With a sharp twist, his Wind Master fan fell with a pained gasp from his mouth.

“Was it fun? Making a fool out of me? Pretending to know nothing at all while acting like my best friend?!?!” Black Water’s volume gradually heightened and by the end of the sentence, he was shouting. His voice echoed in the palace, the only thing to be heard.

Ohnoohnohonoooooo! I’m really innocent ah! I really didn’t know anything until recently!

Black Water initially in the book was more lenient to the Wind Master, even trying to dissuade him to go help his brother. This was most likely since he regarded him minimally as an ignorant innocent party, at best as a sort of friend. But now with this change, Shi Qingxuan made it seem like it had all been an act all these while!!

Fuck! He really fucked up badly! Ahhhhhhh! What to do with this unreasonable and vengeful ghost now? A normal person would have bawled at such a dead end, but he wasn’t a Peak Lord for nothing, he would definitely not wait for his death like a sitting duck. His Highness’s verbal password was “Just recite the Ethics Sutra a thousand times” right?

“Your Highness! Emergency!”

“This is… Lord Wind Master? How did you get my verbal password?”

“I overheard that day when you and Hua Chengzhu exchanged it,” A blatant lie, but necessary. After all he couldn’t say that he read it in a book.

“That’s not important right now! We’ve been tricked! Earth Master was the one behind all of these! He’s not even the Earth Master but Black Water! He’s captured me now and bringing me to his domain! Send help please!” That was the last thing he remembered, before the other party knocked him out, extremely provoked by a lack of reply.

As the world faded to black, his last thoughts were that he should have locked himself tighter in his room.

Notes:

Well, what can I say hahahha
Honestly I realised the clusterfuck Shen Yuan had made only when typing out this chapter.

Chapter 5: Of Brothers and Best Friends

Notes:

Updates may slow for next week as my uni essays deadlines are all coming up.
Or maybe I'll be more interested to write a 3k length chapter about Shen Yuan suffering, rather than my 3k length essays. Who knows haha

On a side note, the fan songs for He Xuan and Shi Qingxuan are amazing. Ahhhh my heart is completely bleeding after listening to those. My fav is this one, it really helps to understand Mandarin because the dialogue killed me!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3M2B8n0c1RA

It just motivates me to write a better end for these two. A few of the dialogues I used here were also inspired from the video.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Clink, clink, clink. Clank.

Blearily opening his eyes, Shi Qingxuan blinked rapidly in the dark room, trying to figure out what was happening. He groaned softly as a pounding headache assaulted him when he tried to turn his head. Oh right- Black Water had captured him, so most likely he was in his domain currently. Sure enough, a glance around the room told him that he was in an underground cell. Stone walls enclosed him, with iron bars blocking the way out. His arms were tied firmly together in chains, and the other end of the chain was connected to the ceiling, causing him to dangle slightly off the ground. No wonder his arms hurt!

He tugged at his restraints, testing their strength. He knew he wouldn’t be able to get out without external help. Either the chains were suppressing his powers, or Black Water had taken the chance to suck his power dry while he was unconscious. He hadn't felt this weak in so long. Hopefully Xie Lian managed to gather a rescue team for him.

The air was damp, causing him to sweat slightly. Hair strands stuck to his face, irritating his skin. Shi Qingxuan feebly shifted around, trying to find a source of comfort in his dire and uncomfortable straits.

“Finally awake?”

Peering up, Shi Qingxuan finally noticed that Black Water stood silently in a corner of the dungeon, watching him. He finally shed his Earth Master disguise. His real features were sharper than his disguise, and paired with a pallid skin tone, it highlighted his ghostly status. Quite similar to Hua Cheng in fact. The black clothes that adorned him now was no longer one of the humble Earth Master’s wardrobe, but more fitting of a Devastation Ghost King. The fabric quality was extremely great, and the embroidery shimmered with intricacy. The delicate golden accessories around his waist further complemented his attire. Even as a God of Wealth, Shi Qingxuan rarely saw such luxury.

“Were you just standing there and staring at me? That’s really creepy, Ming-xiong!”

A deep scowl was the only warning he got before the figure flashed in front of him and pulled him harshly on the hair. “Are you not done masquerading as my best friend?!” He bellowed, voice reverberating in the empty dungeons.

“No!! I’m not! I swear! I only found out about this recently! Ming-xiong, you’ve got to believe me!!!” Shi Qingxuan wailed, arguing for his innocence.

With a snarl, Black Water shoved him hard in the chest, causing the chains that were suspending him to clank once more. “Even if that is so, it doesn’t matter! It doesn’t cleanse you of your sins!”

“Then what do you want me to do Ming-xiong?! I know it was our wrong! We wronged you deeply and I’m really sorry about it! But at this stage, what can be done to appease you? I-...  I- I really see you as my best friend… even now that hasn’t-“

With an anguished scream, Black Water cut his dialogue off as both the Ghost king’s hands were now strangling Shi Qingxuan’s neck. With his windpipe being crushed, he could no longer continue talking, but only suffer the torment in silence. His tears from his emotional outburst earlier stained his face, with only more coming from his eyes to join the rest. His vision darkened with the lack of oxygen, and the corners began to fade black.

“Min- Ming.. xi- ong,” he wheezed out with great trouble. His voice hoarse from the abuse he was receiving. His captor’s fevered gaze darken further at his words. Just as Shi Qingxuan thought he would really die here for his screw up, the grip around his neck loosened, allowing him precious breaths of air. He coughed weakly and sagged.

“Killing you here now would be too lenient to you,” Black Water coldly said. With a swish of his hands, a viewing portal appeared in front of them. “Just see what I’ll do to both you and your brother.” He turned dramatically and stalked out of the cell. At the threshold of his cell, Black Water halted. Without looking back, his merciless words cut into Shi Qingxuan’s heart nonetheless.

“My surname is He. It always has been.” With those parting words, he walked out. The door to his cell closed with a series of creaks, slamming shut.

Enveloped in darkness, Shi Qingxuan grimaced. Black Water was right. He was getting ahead of himself. Just by remembering their past, it doesn’t erase the mistake he and his brother had done. What his brother did was set into stone- irreversible. The matter of fact was that his brother had indeed change the fate of He Xuan with Shi Qingxuan's. The position of the Wind Master was rightfully He Xuan's, and Shi Qingxuan had stolen the divinity from him.

Remorse won't make everything right, they could only face the consequences of their action now. What was he thinking? That everything would be fine as long as Luo Binghe regains his memories?

How naive!

Was there really nothing he could do? Shen Yuan despaired and a sense of helplessness washed over him. He dangled from the chains, limp and unmoving, feeling so utterly wretched and miserable. It was him that was in the wrong now, and he had no idea how to remedy it. He truly appreciated Luo Binghe at this moment. Despite the many wrongdoings had been committed against him, the half blood was still so willing to forgive him. Even though he had blackened, he still was loyal to his Shizun. But now...

He really longed for his cute little disciple now.

A sudden movement in the viewing portal attracted his attention. It was his brother! The Water Tyrant looked worse for the wear. His normal arrogant look was gone and in its place was a strained look of concentration. He was undergoing his Heavenly Tribulation still, however it seemed that he was waning under its pressure. The lightning and rain from the Tribulation crashed against him, pushing him back a few steps mid-air.

What’s wrong? His brother shouldn’t have that much difficulty with the Tribulation! Unless… a growing horror bloomed in his chest. Unless his brother knew that he was kidnapped and his focus deviated due to his worry. Xie Lian must have told him.

“Brother…” Shi Qingxuan whispered brokenly. Even now he was still causing trouble for his sibling.

White seared his vision as an abnormally large lightning strike hit down. Shi Qingxuan watched with unseeing eyes as his brother turned in slow motion to face the attack but being unable to block it fully. His brother’s clothes tore into tatters, and his mouth opened in a silent scream. And then his unmoving figure fell right into the ocean’s open arms.

Shi Qingxuan thinks that he’s hyperventilating. His eyes darted around the huge viewing portal, attempting to locate his brother in the tumultuous sea. His breaths were ragged and coming in quick bursts. Calm down, calm down. Breathe in, and out. In and out. Slowly…

This was not good. With the Water Master out, he’ll be vulnerable to the Black Water’s power. Black Water will definitely use this chance to direct the currents to bring the Water Master into his territory. Both siblings would be trapped here, powerless against the vengeful ghost. Chewing on his lips, Shen Yuan’s overworked brain spun even harder trying to think of a good plan, working against the ticking of time. His migraine no longer a worrying issue in face of this death threat.

What should I do? System, are you there? A little help please…

There was no answer.

His head hung limply, allowing his long hair to shield him from the outside world. He gazed sorrowfully at the floor.

Binghe…

What should this Shizun do?

Having the viewing portal was both a blessing and a curse. It was a blessing because it allowed Shi Qingxuan to know what was happening with his brother. It also provided him with the needed distraction from his predicament. It was a curse because it was a reminder of his powerlessness and the impending doom his brother will face. He Xuan probably meant for the latter, wanting to torment him psychologically.

When Shi Qingxuan saw his brother being swept onto land, his heart weeped. Both in relief that he was still fine, and in fear of what was to come. The two siblings were trapped in Black Water’s territory now. Black Water could easily capture his brother by now, but he did not. Perhaps he wanted to play with them more, wring them out dry and make them suffer till their very last breaths. Now wasn’t that thought reassuring?

His older brother was now slowly regaining his consciousness, sitting up and examining his surroundings. As expected from the Water Master, he could immediately tell where he was at. The water around the island not being under his control, and the only area which fits that requirement was Black Water’s domain. Currently, Shi Qingxuan’s captor. Shi Qingxuan watched as his brother’s face brimmed with fury and in a whirlwind of movement, flew into the island in search of him.

“Brother… don’t come. You’re only taking the bait,” Shi Qingxuan muttered in dismay, gazing at his brother who was running to his execution. You should be running the other way! Even though the Water Tyrant was severely injured from the Tribulation, his rigor in searching for his brother dimmed not in the least. Ignoring his injuries in favour of crashing around the island and shouting his brother’s name, he showed no hesitation in destroying parts of Black Water’s domain.

Shi Qingxuan cried internally when he saw his brother being so brash, being reminded of the Bai Zhan Peak Lord.

Have more care! Could you be more delicate?! The person’s home that you are thrashing right now has our lives in his hands. Can you have more tact and use your brain?!

Why was he surrounded by such muscle brains?!

The only good thing about his destructive force was that the island’s monster inhabitants dare not get close. So the Water Master met with no interference and smoothly reached the entrance to the prison. Too smooth in fact, that it was blatantly obvious it was a trap. In fact, one could already tell as Black Water did not remove the longevity lock around Shi Qingxuan’s collar. Shi Qingxuan remembered once explaining to the Earth Master about how the locks work. Both brothers wore a longevity lock on them, and the two locks were connected. If one of them was hurt, the other’s lock would vibrate and direct them to the other sibling.

If Black Water really didn’t wanted the Water Master to find him, he would have removed the lock once he had kidnapped him.

“Qingxuan!” Ah, the voice sounded closer now. When he wasn’t focusing on the screen, his brother had already jumped into the ghoul-infested water- the entrance to his prison.

“Brother… I’m here,” his raspy voice echoed in the dungeons, allowing his brother to locate him. The sound of hasty footsteps drew closer, till hi brother stood at the other side of his cell. With a blast of the Water Master’s spiritual power, the iron bars to his cell broke. Followed by a vertical slash of his fan, the chains disconnected from the ceiling cleanly. The viewing portal dissipated once the Water Master dashed through it. Shi Qingxuan slumped into his brother’s embrace, grateful to not be hanging off the ceiling anymore. Though the manacles were still binding his wrists, restricting his movement.

“You idiot! What did I tell you about running about wildly? Didn’t I say to stay home?!”

“...Sorry…”

His brother balked a little at seeing him so obedient for once, being remorseful for running around. Supporting his weight like it was nothing, his brother turned to leave the prison. Or he would have, if not for the figure in black blocking the exit.

“What a happy reunion,” eyes narrowed in distaste, Black Water hissed out scornfully.

Notes:

I was going to end at the line break initially, but I didn't wanted to be cruel so I typed in the last part to save ya'll from the angsty cliff hanger hahahha

Though I'm glad to say that I can wrap up this arc in the next chapter! Are you ready? XD It won't be the end of this fic though, since I intend to bring in other scum villain characters and also explore how this change will affect HOB's canon story line.

I'll put up a spoiler note at the top of the chapter when I leave this arc to go into other HOB arcs for those who are worried.

Chapter 6: And The Story Begins Once More

Notes:

Here's it! The resolution :) some of ya'll had guessed the ending but I hope it'll still be enjoyable to you

Warning; second half of chapter contains explicit sex. Similar to the first sex scene of Scum Villain, so if that makes you uncomfortable, skip till the last part.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

“You! We have nothing against you, who cares if you smuggled into Heavens as a spy, why abduct my brother?” The Water Master snarled ferociously at the figure in front of him, moving forward to shield his brother as well.

Black Water’s face contorted and darkened. “Oh really? Look closer, Water Master. It has only been a few hundred years, do you not remember me anymore?”

Shi Qingxuan winced internally as he saw his brother drawing up a blank. Confusion and a lack of recognition marred his brother's face. He helpfully supplied, “His birth name is He Xuan.”

The realisation stopped the Water Master in his tracks. A sharp inhalation of breath was heard. Shi Qingxuan felt his brother tense, taking a moment to regain his bearing. “Even so, it isn’t Qingxuan’s fault! You’ve been with him all these while, you know he’s ignorant and innocent! What I did was my own choice.”

“And that’s more detestable! What gave him the right to live happily on another person’s fate?! Living ignorantly of what has been done and the blood that was split for him to live that way.”

“MY FAMILY WAS INNOCENT TOO!” With a roar, Black Water surged forward to attack the Water Master.

Shi Qingxuan was immediately pushed back by his brother, causing him to stumble down onto the floor. There, he was relatively safe from the battle and also had a good view to watch the duel.

Bursts of spiritual power shook the enclosed area. Bright sparks burned at his retina and he moved to avoid some stray shots. Despite being injured, the Water Master was doing admirably in the fight. However at the end of the day, he was still in another person’s territory, his powers were not strong enough to combat the Ghost King. A horizontal swipe from Black Water disarmed his spiritual fan, which dropped down onto the floor askew. He Xuan took the chance to stomp on it, and a loud cracking sound was heard throughout the prison.

Without his weapon, the Water Master retreated slightly, backing up to stand in front of Shi Qingxuan protectively again.

“That makes two,” from his sleeve, the broken Wind Master fan dropped down to join its counterpart. The two shredded fans laid depressingly on the dirty floor, foreshadowing what was to come for the two siblings.

Black Water kicked the two fans to the side of the dungeon. Just as Shi Qingxuan was wondering why he did that, he squinted and realised there was a divine altar in that direction. On it were four urns, labelled Father, Mother, Sister and Fiancee respectively. He didn’t spot it sooner as the entire altar and urns were all black, camouflaging with the dark walls of the prison.

“Kneel. And apologise to them.”

Seeing no other way, the two brothers complied. They kneeled and kowtowed to the altar, albeit a little shakily. When they tried to get up, dense spiritual power filled the entire prison and slammed them back down on their knees.

“Who said you could get up? And who said that was enough of an apology?”

A rusted sword clattered down in front of the two siblings. A foreboding sense of horror grew in Shi Qingxuan. He was being swept away by the original storyline, with no power to change things. It was at this time that he finally cursed his status as a reincarnator. Was it not crueler for someone to know what was going to happen next and not having the power to stop it? The suspense and sheer feeling of helplessness were enough to strain a person’s mind.

It wasn’t just a story anymore. This was his life!

The feeling of failure grew even more at the next words Black Water sprouted. He Xuan pointed at him, “You. You once asked what can appease me for the wrong you two have done.”

“Kill your brother. I’ll take that as an apology and leave you alone after that as long as you don’t appear in front of me.”

As expected, his brother readily agreed to the proposition, seeing as Shi Qingxuan will be spared with his own death. His brother tried to shove the rusted sword into his hands, but his hands shook with his vehement refusal to kill his brother. His loose grip caused the sword to clatter back down to the ground.

“NO! I refuse!” How could he kill this person with his own hands? This was his brother! His blood-related brother who took care of him since forever ago. His older brother who had dressed him up, combed his hair, and put him to sleep when he was young. The same brother who brought him up when their parents had died, told him bedtime stories and stole food for him to eat.

He’d rather not live if the alternative was to end his brother’s life with his two hands. His sudden lunge to the sword at his feet startled the two occupants. He backed away to the prison wall, putting distance between him and the duo. He raised the sword to his neck, halting the movements of the other two. Tears threatened to overflow from his eyes. His voice croaked out, “I would rather die than murder my own brother.”

Binghe… forgive this Shizun for being so useless. It doesn't matter if I can't make you remember, it'll be better for you that way.

“I have wronged you countless times and made you suffer.”

I don’t think I can come back after this. There isn’t a body grown from the Sun and Moon Dew Flower Seed waiting for me.

“I hope my death will appease you and spare my brother.”

I will go one step ahead of you.

“I’m sorry.”

Shi Qingxuan gritted his teeth and moved to slice his neck with the sword. He was prepared to die and yet, he didn’t account for the black manacles around his wrist jerking out, causing the sword to be flung out of his grip once more. He raised his head up to meet frantic obsidian eyes, arms still stretched out from manipulating the chains. The concern immediately vanished however as Black Water strode forward to pick up the sword, trying to appear nonchalant. “Who gave you an alternative?”

Perhaps his brother was terrified of Shi Qingxuan doing something drastic again, the Water Master took this inopportune moment to bend forward and howl with laughter. His uproar drew the ire of the Demon King. He Xuan snapped, “Why are you laughing? Is it very funny?”

“You! HAHAH! You’re so hilarious.”

Straightening up, the Water Tyrant drew up to his full height and proudly sneered at the figure in black. “All these years, plotting and scheming, all for the sake of your dead family! We’ve been Heavenly Officials for several hundreds of years, living in luxury and comfort. While you died, becoming a vengeful ghost living in solitude and wallowing in contempt.”

“After all that has happened, you’re filled with so much rage. You talk about wanting to kill us for revenge! But at the end of the day, you can’t bear to end him!!

“YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF! DOING THIS IN FRONT OF YOUR FAMILY’S ASHES! HAHAHHAHA! ”

Shi Qingxuan watched with bated breath as Black Water’s face darkened ominously. His eyes alight with fervent agitation, and the temperature of the room dropped chillingly. Fine mist of black aura encircled the Devastation-ranked ghost dangerously, steadily growing thicker. “Brother! Shut up!”

His brother only laughed harder.

Black Water walked forward to the laughing deity, one step at a time. It was rather similar to a show Shen Yuan watched once, where a wolf silently stalked its prey, before pouncing and ending its life. At first the two were on opposite sides of the prison, and Black Water needed roughly half a dozen of steps to reach his brother. The distance slowly decreased as he walked. Seven steps now.

His eyes widened

Six steps

His breath caught

Five steps

Realisation of what was going to happen dawned on him

Four steps

Panic overtook him and short circuited his brain

Three steps

His thoughts were a jumbled mess

Two steps

He scrambled up, legs and arms uncoordinated as he finally realised he had to move!

One step

The two entities who controlled the waters stood face to face, tall and unyielding. Time was running out. With a slight shing sound, the sword was raised, aimed at his brother’s neck. The intent to kill was obvious for all to see. Black Water was going to behead Water master.

Shi Qingxuan’s perception of time slowed and he saw everything in slow motion. He took in every detail, from the slight twitch of muscles from Black Water which signaled the descent of the sword, to the quirk on his brother’s lips from the after effects of laughing so hard.

Ahhh nonono no NO! This can’t happen! I swore that I would avoid this ending!!

Brother!

“LUO BINGHE! STOP!”

The sword froze a hair’s breadth away from cutting into his brother.

“... what did you call me?”

<Congratulations~ Special condition met! >

Shi Qingxuan gaped at the untimely notification. The condition was just to say his name?! Seriously? After all the trouble he had to suffer through, he could have easily ended this farce?!

“Finally! Hurry and tell me the way to unlock his memories!”

The next notification from the system made him curse up a storm internally. Disbelief coursed through him and he almost thought he had heard wrong. He bit back the blood he would have coughed out in reaction to this. It wasn’t even the formidable glare from Black Water that had derailed him, which was a feat on its own. Shen Yuan really thinks that the system should deserve an award for being able to do this to him every time without fail.

<Papapa>

Are you kidding me?!?! Ahhhhhhh how even wtff!

He swallowed an enraged wail. Since when anything was not solved by papapa? Got poisoned? Cure it by pappa. Getting overwhelmed by demonic sword? Papapa. Qi deviation? Pappa. Fuck! He thought he had escaped this particularly nasty plot device when he reincarnated into another story. He can’t believe he still has to suffer through Airplane-bro’s horrible writing skills.

By now Black Water was done waiting for an answer. He crossed the room in three large strides. From his height, he loomed over Shi Qingxuan who was still slumped on the floor from his attempts to scramble across the room. Grasping the chains which were connected to the manacles around his wrist, Black Water hauled him to a half standing position. “Well?” Their eyes interlocked and Shi Qingxuan could hear his own heart reverberating loudly. Swallowing inaudibly, he decided bet it all here.

Binghe! You better cook up some tasty offerings for this Shizun after this!

He surged up to lock their lips together, uncaring that his Brother was in the room watching. How embarrassing! Ignoring his brother’s indignant scream at him to stop lowering himself to this demon scum and what the actual fuck he was doing, Shi Qingxuan continued snogging his would-be murderer. He pressed his tongue onto the other party’s lips which was cold and unreactive, but slightly ajared from shock. Taking the opportunity to deepen the kiss, Shi Qingxuan fervently kissed him and hoped it’ll work out somehow. When they parted, a tiny string of saliva connected their lips. It glinted in the dark and brought extra humiliation to Shi Qingxuan.

“Shizun?” A small and uncertain voice escaped from his captor’s lips. Black Water’s eyes were unseeing, as if he was not present. Perhaps some part of his memories had unlocked and he was viewing them in his mind.

Hey, that means it’s working!

But not a moment too soon, Black Water snapped out of his daze. Shi Qingxuan barely had the time to celebrate before he noticed it. Black Water’s eyes narrowed in vexation and his grip on the chains tightened further, as evident by the creaking metallic sound. Still ignoring the Water Tyrant, Black Water all but dragged him away. The door slammed shut at their departure, his brother was left locked in the prison cell, though his enraged screams followed after them. Shi Qingxuan trailed behind his captor like an obedient puppy through the winding of the Water Ghost’s mansion. At last they stopped in front of a room. Opening the door, he was shoved inside. Then with an oomph, he was thrown on a soft surface.

The black canopy bed he landed on was large and took up at least half of the room. Shi Qingxuan almost moaned as he laid back on the bed. His aching body weeped in relief. It was really comfortable! Much better than being chained in prison!

Suddenly, his view of the room was blocked. He found the other party towering menacingly above him. “You! What tricks are you up to now?” Black Water clenched his fist around his lapels and shook him hard. His back was hunched and his brows furrowed down deeply, seemingly in agony.

“Binghe it’s okay. Shizun is here.” Shi Qingxuan’s eyes soften and he hooked his chained arms over the other party’s neck before using it as leverage to pull him in. Their kiss continued from where they had left off in the previous room. It was far from the sweet kisses the couple had shared in the early mornings in their previous life. This kiss was harsh and bruising. Filled with biting and clashing of teeth. It was messy and painful, but aptly bringing across the emotions of the duo.

As their tongues locked in a fiery battle of dominance, Shi Qingxuan felt cool large hands moving down his torso and clasping at the sides. There was no warning before a ripping sound filled the air. His dirtied clothes were now ruined, and abandoned on the floor. Cool air assaulted his skin and he shivered slightly. Both separated at last and took in breaths of air. Black Water was still unfocused, and seemed to be moving on instinct. After a short pause, Black Water trailed his hands further down, and he hooked them underneath Shi Qingxuan’s knees.

With a large pull, his legs were spread apart. He froze and choked a little when he felt a blunt object poking at his chrysanthemum. Isn’t this a little too soon?!

And then as if a parody of their first time, Black Water blearily stared at him as he slowly sheathed in without any preparation.

It hurts! He felt like he was splitting into two!

Instinctively he tried to move back, away from the pain, but his waist was held tight and he could not escape. His limbs flailed around, and he was unsure of what he was doing. He almost whacked Black Water in the face twice. In the end, he settled for placing his bound arms around the Ghost King’s neck. He clenched his hands tightly together and braced himself.

The warm fiery heavenly pillar pulsed and throbbed in him, finally fully inserted. Shi Qingxuan was glad to report that in this incarnation, Luo Binghe has lost his behemoth monstrosity. Yes. His dick was smaller, though still reasonably sized. No one’s body can compare to a stallion novel protagonist’s after all.

He Xuan surged down and captured Shi Qingxuan’s lips into another round of kissing.

Hurry up! Why are you so slow?!?!

Shen Yuan has not felt this searing pain during sex for a very long time. Luo Binghe had many decades to practice and hone his skills after they had gotten married. They had long graduated the years of painful and horrible sex and copulating became an enjoyable and pleasurable activity for them. Before they had died, he was proud to declare that Luo Binghe’s skills in bed were comparable to his cooking skills! Finally worthy of being called a stallion novel protagonist! The experience now was such a painful throwback for him.

He Xuan then seemed to lose interest in sucking and biting his lips. Before Shi Qingxuan could relax, the object inside of him started to move. In, out, in, out. The thrusting made him close his eyes in pain. He swore he felt something in him tear, and a warm liquid trickled out with each movement. Even without verification, he was certain he would see red if he looked down.

Instinctively he clamped down hard on the intruding object, but all it served to do was to make He Xuan moaned softly and move more vigorously. Right… an incurable M here. He willed his bottom half to relax so that it won’t be as painful.

Curling his body inwards, he consoled himself mentally that the download was more than halfway done. He Xuan continued to thrust mercilessly into him, his face scrunched up slightly. Shen Yuan directed himself to calm down. Deep breaths, breathe in and out, in and out.

Chapter 7: No One's Ever a Villain If You Learn Their Story

Notes:

Brace Yourself

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

When He Xuan was little, he was told that he was destined for greatness.

He was extremely smart and capable, and could easily learn new things. At three months old, he already said his first word. At six months, when other babies were still sucking their thumbs, He Xuan already was taking his first steps. When others were learning their first words, he could string together sentences.

A prodigy! His parents would smile indulgently at him and pat his head. Although his family finances were not very good, his parents still tried to provide for him. They scoured for books to let him read, sold some of their valuables to purchase paper and ink for him to write. Sometimes, they even forgone their own meals so that they could buy for He Xuan some studying material. His parents didn’t wanted their son to suffer because of their lack of wealth. They couldn’t let his talent go to waste.

Seeing all of their efforts, He Xuan at the tender age of four decided to work hard to excel. He wanted to do better, so that his parents will continue smiling at him. So that they need not suffer anymore. He set his eyes on the National Examinations, aiming to become a country’s official and propel his family into greatness. He wanted to bring his parents honour.

His motivation blossomed even greater when his little sister came into this world, screaming and kicking. His awe-filled eyes watched the little infant, being cradled by his mother. Inching closer, he tenderly held his sister’s hand in his hold. The action stirred his sister and she gave him an adorable coo. Her eyes turned crescent-like and her arms raised towards him, as if she wanted He Xuan to carry her. Their parents, watching on from the side, laughed.

His resolve hardened, and his determination soared.

Even though He Xuan had so many good things in life that could make people jealous- intelligence, good looks and a loving family- he was not content. For some indescribable reason, he felt like he was sorely missing something. That he lacked something by his side. He just could not put his finger on it. Whenever he was sad, and sobbing quietly in his room. Or when he was happy and wanted to celebrate with someone else. He would always subconsciously think that there would be another person beside him. To praise him, to pat his head and to console him.

Sometimes in the mornings, his fingers would itch, as if he wanted to cook something. In the afternoons, he half expected someone to scold him for skiving off his studies. At night, he felt as if his bed was too empty and cold.

It was as if he was waiting for someone.

However, as an ever dutiful son, he would tuck away his worries everytime he stepped out of the privacy of his room to meet the world. He would not let his concerns show in front of others. This was the least he could do to repay his parent’s love for him. Logically, he knew all these minute feelings did not make sense. In his life, there were many people who cared for him. Was he not being ungrateful for feeling such dissatisfaction in his heart? How unfilial!

That was why he nodded obediently when his parents set his marriage for him. He was to wed his childhood friend once both parties reached a marriageable age. Everyone congratulated him, all cheers and laughter. Some even burning with slight jealousy. After all, his childhood friend was beautiful and dainty like flowers. She embodied the virtues of kindness and compassion and walked around with a grace of a cat. He Xuan smiled and thanked everyone for their congratulations.

That night, he cried himself to sleep, choking back on his heartfelt sobs, not knowing why his heart clenched so painfully.

(It felt as if he was committing the worst of sins. The taste of betrayal clung to his teeth and reared its head uglily when he interacted with his fiancee.)

When misfortune came his way, he thought that it was Heaven’s retribution for being ungrateful.

He saw his efforts go down the drain when he couldn’t get a rank because of the sabotage done to his national exams. He watched on helplessly when his fiancee and little sister were kidnapped and forced to be used for others’ pleasure. He heard of how his parents kowtowed for him, as he spent his life miserably in jail, almost dying of starvation.

(Was it really a sin to yearn?)

Two years later, he miraculously was released from jail, but only to find his mother dead and his father at death’s door. Determined at least to let his father live in comfort in his remaining days, He Xuan got into business. He started his own restaurant, and sold many varieties of food, from congee to sweets. He always had a penchant to cook, though he did it in secret. He was good at it, and he put it to practical use now.

And yet, his efforts backlashed once more and bit him hard. Other merchants envious of his success plotted against him. His restaurant closed down and his customer base snatched empty. The debts he had piled up until there was no way he could return them. By now, his father has passed on as well, too affected by what had happened to his son.

Tears came down He Xuan’s face. Who said he was destined for greatness? He was cursed! Cursed with misfortune! Anyone close to him was fated with a bad end. He couldn’t fulfill his dream. He couldn’t even protect his own family. He could not give them a comfortable life and had even indirectly caused them to die. What kind of pathetic creature was he?

The lowest of scum!

That night, the town dyed crimson as he rampaged around and delivered justice. The blood fell from his victims, rather similar to how the tears had fallen from his eyes a few hours back.

His heart alight with satisfaction. A smile slowly grew on his face with each slash. By the time he was done, his clothes were stained heavy with blood, it was hard for him to hold the knife in his hands due to the sticky and slimy red. And as the officials dispatched troops to kill him for his misaction, He Xuan died with a frenzied smile, eyes hinting of his deranged state.

At his death, when his soul left his body, he saw a glimpse of a Heavenly Official. And he thought, so he was right, it was Heaven’s punishment.

But how can he be peaceful?

(He still has not managed to find what he was waiting for. He refused to believe it was wrong of him.)

He descends into Tonglu Mountain, broken apart and made anew. His hatred for Heavens grew and overflowed. Who were they to dictate what was right and wrong? Who gave them the power to meddle in others’ lives? If the Heavens saw his life as a joke, he would tear down the Heavens brick by brick till there’s nothing standing in his way.

With these repetitive dark thoughts swirling in his head, he climbs to victory on Tonglu Mountain, covered in blood and grime. For miles and miles in the desert-like place, he stands all alone. With a roar, he screams out his pent up feelings to the skies, and vows to never die till he fulfils his wishes.

A Ghost King is born.

When he “ascends” and learns of the truth, disbelief coursed through him. That his entire life was cursed the way it is because of that person’s action. He sees the Three Tumors laughing merrily in the distance and profound hate burns deep in his chest. The rage engulfs his entire being and he almost breaks his cover right there and then. The urge to snap their necks fills him.

How can he rest in peace when the cause of his misery is living as if nothing is wrong. The flames of vengeance burns brighter, fueling his existence.

But then a chime-like laughter draws his attention.

A pure and untamed smile almost blinds him. The one who has an unguarded and open personality consistently flocks to him. A bright “Ming-xiong” falls from the lips of the younger brother of his tormentor. Jubilant and free like the wind, he comes in like a hurricane and sweeps He Xuan off his feet.

(Something clicks into place within him. Ah… so this is what he was missing.)

But he denies it. He vehemently ignores the feeling. For how can this be? This is the one who made his entire life a living hell. Heaven’s retribution dictates the siblings should suffer for it. His whole life was a scam! It was supposed to be him that ascends. The divinity of the Wind Master is rightfully his!

And he hates and hates and he hates.

Here’s a fact: He’s a ghost. True to his identity, he plotted and cursed. He wants the two brothers to suffer for their sins.

Here’s another fact: Even ghosts have hearts.

A small part of him twinge when he thinks of harming the Wind Master. What a sin it would be to wipe away such a beautiful smile from the world. His heart throbs when he thinks of his best friend lying in ruins, fallen as a result of his own actions against them. And yet he lies to himself and continues to torment them from the shadows.

(And he also torments himself.)

He ignores every fiber of his being telling him to stop. That he will come to regret it. He scoffs. Ghosts don’t regret enacting out their vengeance. It was after all the purpose of their existence. He repeats this like a mantra as he sent out the Venerable to haunt the Wind Master.

(If he feels a tinge of guilt when the Wind Master haggardly comes to him for help, he will not admit it to himself)

When Shi Qingxuan does not heed his subtle warnings throughout the entire trip and continues to plunge ahead to his demise, he does not admit to the sheer disappointment and horror that he felt. When the Venerable fails to capture the Wind Master, he does not confess it but he feels a sense of relief. It overwhelms him so that it takes him days to realise the implications of it. He knew? A foreboding sense of gloom clouds him. He wouldn’t lie to him... The Wind Master is his friend.

That person’s smile flash in his mind. Insincerity was the last thing in his mind.

And yet, his friend’s hesitance to follow him into the array is blatant to see.

(He did not sabotage the array this time round. They could have had a day of fun in the Rain Master’s village.)

His heart tears and shatters once more. What is the truth, which are the lies?

Bitterness swells in him. He really is just a joke to the entirety of Heavens. Do they like to play him for a fool so much? He knocks his supposed friend out, half tempted to just end him there and then. His hand retreated in the end. No, he’s useful as bait for the other sibling.

(His traitorous mind whispers, is that the only reason stopping you?)

He’s so pathetic. His heart jumps slightly when the Wind Master pleads his innocence. He wants to believe. To believe in one another, is that not what friends do? He suffers more and more with this inner turmoil. Ah, how he wish things would go back once more. To the carefree days when he was content to just sit beside his friend, listening to his drunken rambles. But he knows it won’t happen.

He’s a fake. He’s never been the Earth Master. Nor his Ming-xiong.

He shields himself away from his heart, claiming it to be non-existent. He ignores the minute empathy he feels when he sees the Water Master defending the Wind Master from him till the very end, even after the Water Master fan shatters.

(He done the very same thing for his sister a very long time ago.)

He should feel satisfaction at seeing them bow to his family in apology. Yet, all he has is an acrid taste in his mouth.

His heart stills when the Wind Master points the sword at himself. A breath that he does not need catches in his throat. He moves on instinct, even before he realises it. By the time his brain catches up, he assures himself that he snatched the sword away to prolong their suffering. He wants the older brother to die and the younger to watch and despair like him.

(Who are you lying to?)

And so he raises the rusted sword high in the air, prepares to deal the final blow. To end this farce. To end his vengeance. To end everything.

He hates. And hates and hates. Pure anger and contempt filled his entire being.

But who does he actually hates?

The Water Master in front of him, he replies internally. The one who stole his fate and doomed his entire family to their brutal fates. He could have had everything, fulfilled his dream, brought honour to his family, given them a comfortable life. And yet… this man in front of him stole it. Snatched it unrightfully and gave him a fate worse than a living hell.

But Black Water is not known for honesty.

(He hates himself.)

Just a swing down and he will start the journey of self-loathing. For having the ability to tear his best friend’s life asunder. To destroy his smile. To kill his beloved brother in front of him.

He really is a scum.

“LUO BINGHE!”

And everything snaps into place. And the discomfort he felt since young dissipates almost instantly. His soul sings and his heart croons, it is sheer unadulterated relief that runs through his veins. A flash of bamboo hut and the smell of congee and the sound of a fan snapping open and and the warm smile directed his way.

He doesn’t remember what he did in his delirious state. Nor does he register the mechanical sound of the system.

But he remembers. Of a life long gone. Of the person he yearned for and swore to protect.

Grief fills him. Things he never thought he would feel overwhelms him. Is this remorse?

I’m so sorry, shizun. For hurting you. For scheming against you. For even daring to think of harming you. He glances down at where they are connected, blood pools and stains his sheet. The evidence laying there is a painful reminder of what he has just done. Gently touching his Shizun's bruised neck and seeing the haggard look on his face spirals him further down into anguish and despair.

But his beloved just smiles tenderly at him, as always.

(What did he do to deserve that smile? I’m wretched. So despicable. I almost ruined you irreversibly.)

“Haven’t I told you before? This Shizun is willing.”

He once thought that he had the most abysmal luck in life. It must be so, in order for him to have the same birth characters and last name as the Wind Master. What were the odds? But now, he feels like he is the luckiest person in the world. To have this person love him in both his lives, and is willing to stay with him once more. Tears drip down without him knowing. He slinks down to cradle the other party, rubbing his face against the soft hair of the other. He had really really missed him. His best friend. His Shizun. His husband.

(It is the first time he has cried ever since turning into a Ghost King).

They say that Black Water was born out of hate. That isn’t the complete truth. He was born out of love as well. A love that endured through the passing of ages, even through death.

Chapter Text

Hey! hey! Did you hear?

Black Water was very active recently!

Oh?

He snuck into heaven, masquerading as an official. He then lured the Wind and Water Masters into his lair. By the time the other officials reached, he and the Wind Master were gone. The Water Master was found locked up and fatally injured.

Eh, then where are they now?

No one knows! Some say they’ve eloped, others say that they fought and perished together.

Eloped? Hah! No way!

I know right! For Black Water to spend years undercover in Heaven, the two Elemental Gods must have been the reason for this Devastation-ranked ghost to be born.

Everyone knows that Black Water was born out of hate, so how could the two have eloped!

~.~.~.~

Shi Qingxuan was lazing on the couch of a small bamboo hut. Books were organised neatly on shelves. Scrolls stacked stoutly on the table. The walls were filled with calligraphy and scenic paintings. An aura of calmness radiated from the homely adobe. The hut may be a pale imitation of the home he once had on Qing Jing Peak, but it still brought him great comfort at the familiarity.

The wind gently tickled him, flowing from one end of the hut to the other. It was as if it was trying to explore the area for its Master, assessing for any threats. Though, Shi Qingxuan mused, it was unnecessary. He Xuan would have removed anything dangerous if he deemed it safe for his Shizun to stay.

He really was impressive to have procured such a place in a short period of time. He had only regained his memories yesterday and had already managed to recreate their bamboo hut from Qing Jing Peak. Black Water indeed had lots of connection to make these kind of things possible. Upon thinking about the Devastation-ranked ghost, Shi Qingxuan felt a barrage of conflicting feelings assault him.

How should he feel about the newly minted reincarnator? He wasn’t really sure. Of course he was happy that Luo Binghe was finally back with him, that was a fact he could not deny. But his current incarnation brought about feelings of guilt as well. Not to mention the proceedings from yesterday were still fresh in his mind. After hugging it out yesterday and crying manly tears of reunion, the duo decided to wash up. It was exceedingly awkward for both. They may have been married for centuries in the past, but they have also been away from each other for quite some time now. It was as if they weren’t sure what the proper way to interact was anymore.

This was further exacerbated by the fact that He Xuan was at his throat a couple of hours back.

Though, it did not deter Binghe from helping him to clean up. Both were sitting in the bathtub, face to face. His disciple's face was contorted with a grimace, guilt exuded from him in waves. His hands were gentle, a sharp contrast to his behaviour in bed previously, as he worked out the remaining liquid inside Shi Qingxuan. The manacles around the Wind Master's wrists were long since broken by the Ghost King. He was relieved to find his powers back, thrumming in his veins. Ah, so it was the chains that was sealing his power.

Silence pervaded. The only sound that could be heard in the room were the sloshing of water in the bath.

Awkward would definitely be the first word anyone would use if they had stumbled onto this scene. Though they probably wouldn't live long enough to utter the word out as they would have died for daring to look at the naked body of Shi Qingxuan. Just as the silence became oppressive, Shi Qingxuan gathered up enough bravery to speak first. It was imperative that the duo settle the white elephant in the room. How can they pretend everything was fine if they had such a big cloud looming over their heads. It was best to settle it right now. The longer they drag it for, the more awkward it will be.

“Binghe… about my brother…” he trailed off uncertainly, as even his shamelessness couldn’t make him voice out his concern fully. After all, the actions that his Brother had done in his name had screwed He Xuan over so spectacularly. Asking the victim to forget all about it was really a nigh impossible feat. Best to let Binghe come to a decision on his own, without this his own interference.

He Xuan gazed at him intensely at that. His look was indiscernible, and Shi Qingxuan had no way of telling what his disciple was thinking of. It didn’t help that an unfamiliar face stared back at him. He bore the intense scrutiny with as much aloofness he could muster.

After a momentary lapse of silence, He Xuan finally replied, “Shizun, I’ve said before. Matters concerning you, I only remember and not hate.”

“You staying with me and leaving him is enough punishment for him.”

Shi Qingxuan wanted to salute his (ex-?)husband. Although they have not discussed their future yet, it seems that Binghe has already decided for him. The words “staying with him” and “leaving him”. Was it not him implicitly telling Shi Qingxuan that he would not be heading back to heaven with his brother for the foreseeable future and will be staying with Black Water?

While Shi Qingxuan wanted to be angry for that presumption, he really couldn’t find any righteous anger rising in him. He stared at his disciple, now having finished cleaning him up and was just gently rubbing circles on his back. It was a familiar sensation, something they used to do in the comfort of each other’s embrace. The sense of familiarity eased his tensed muscles and caused him to press into the Ghost King’s hand.

There was no way in any world that Shen Yuan will not choose Luo Binghe over everything else.

In fact, was this not the best possible outcome? For Black Water to give up his hatred and for his own brother to live. The only thing that had to be compromised was the location he was living at and him spending time with his brother. It was a big saving grace that was given to them. Moreover, Shen Yuan knew the inner workings of his disciple. His disciple had an insecurity complex that reached the Heavens. Rather than Binghe trying to impose his will on this Shizun, most likely what he was doing was to affirm that Shi Qingxuan would stay with him and not run off with someone else.

He sighed internally and reached out to pat his disciple’s head. Smoothing out the fringe, he murmured out his consent. “Though you have to let me say farewell to him first. Then I’ll follow you to wherever you want to go, alright?”

At that sentence, an audible sniffle could be heard from the Ghost King, and a cracked yes left his lips. It looked as if a great weight was lifted from his chest. Luo Binghe probably expected Shen Yuan to rebuff him.

Gosh, they’re kind of dysfunctional aren’t they? Though, Shen Yuan mused, it didn’t make their relationship any less than others. He still loved his husband. Even with such a fucked up thing happening to them, that hasn't changed.

It was probably the same for Luo Binghe.

~.~.~.~

Shi Qingxuan had told He Xuan to stay outside while he went in to talk to his brother. It’s going to be awkward enough already, even without someone listening in.

Currently, he was angsting outside the cell his brother was in and pacing around. Now that he was actually thinking clearly, he finally remembered that the last thing his brother saw was He Xuan dragging him away after the kiss. Doesn’t that meant his brother had assumed the worst?! That his little brother was ravished against his will and had his chastity taken away like some damsel in a poorly written romance novel?!

Fuck! How bloody embarrassing!!

He knew what he was doing okay! It was a totally calculated move. If he had his fan with him, it would have been a blur by now from his anxious fanning.

Still, it took a while for Shi Qingxuan to gather up the courage to enter the cell. Granted, it wasn’t his internal courage but more of the fact that he was afraid Luo Binghe might just decided to barge in out of impatience.

Clicking the door behind him shut, he took in the sight of his brother. The once proud Water Master was slumped at the far end of the prison cell, looking extremely battered and resigned. His clothes was torn and his body covered in lacerations and grime. At the sound of his footsteps, his brother’s eyes shot up to meet his. Eyes widening, he frantically scrambled up and clutched Shi Qingxuan’s shoulders. “What did he do to you?! Are you okay?”

His brother scanned him for any injuries and visibly relaxed when he didn’t find any.

Shi Qingxuan smiled wanly, unsure of how to broach the subject. If he just drop the bomb on his brother that he's leaving, it seemed rather cruel. He already could predict his brother’s explosive reaction. Shi Wudu will definitely protest and rage, snarling that he rather die than let his little brother gallop off with the Ghost King. His wealth of life experience never taught him how to say goodbye. Usually he just vanished off the world map and let the others deal with the consequences.

How should he convince his brother?

Shi Qingxuan finally couldn’t take it anymore and exhaled softly. He blurted out, “we did the three bows.” Technically not a lie, they did it in their previous life.

His brother froze.

“We consummated the marriage as well.”

Before his brother could get over his shock, and lash out at the supposed loss of his innocence, Shi Qingxuan barreled on. He knew if he let his brother have a word in there, the Water Master will never listen to what he has to say. With the stubborn nature of his brother, once he said his piece, he would definitely follow through and prove it with actions. So what's the best solution? Not let him speak at all and plough right through him! “I’m not being coerced, and I’m being treated very well. I love him! And and… you really don’t have to worry brother.”

“I’m leaving with him. To travel the world and explore,” Shi Qingxuan’s face was splashed red at all the declarations he had just made. Gosh, this was so embarrassing, confessing his feelings out loud, to his brother no less.

There wasn’t any response from Shi Wudu, his face was still stuck at the expression of shock from earlier. Perhaps the blue screen of death was all his brother could see and he had to reboot his system from the short circuit which his little brother had just given him. Shi Qingxuan had always been running around wildly since young, but this was probably the first time he made such a bold declaration.

“Wha-?” The Water Master gritted out uncomprehendingly, after regaining his bearings. He looked extremely scandalised. “You can’t just leave with him! Have you gone crazy?!”

“I know you’re upset brother, but this is really the best choice for us. Even if we can’t see each other often anymore, I can still drop by occasionally,” Shi Qingxuan attempted to assure his brother. Shi Wudu being upset was just mildly putting it, the greatest understatement of the millennia in his own humble opinion.

“Bi- He Xuan also said he won’t spread the news of what you’ve done as long as you don’t do anything to him.”

The two brothers stared at each other, one determined to leave, the other speechless at how the situation was developing. It was rather understandable. Just a few hours back they were going to die, and now his little brother said he had married their captor and will be leaving with him. No matter how you phrase it, it’ll still come off as weird!!

A creak sounded behind them. He Xuan stepped through. He ignored the Water Master entirely and looked only at Shi Qingxuan, “We need to leave now. Reinforcements from heaven have arrived.”

Ah yes, Shi Qingxuan almost forgot he had pinged Xie Lian for help before coming. Wasn’t it kind of slow though? If he solely relied on their help, he would have died ten times over by now.

“I’ve slowed their boats. The creatures around this island are distracting them now, but they will arrive soon.”

Shi Qingxuan stepped back from his brother. “Let’s go then.”

“Wait,” Shi Wudu croaked out, hands reaching out, as though he could grab onto his little brother and keep him here. But his hands reached nothing, and he was forced to watch his little brother walk off, away from him. A distressed keening sound escaped from him, doing little to assuage Shi Qingxuan's guilt. His steps faltered a little, but he still continued walking away.

Then, He Xuan’s hand smoothly captured his and squeezed tightly. Shi Qingxuan blinked up and saw the unvoiced concern in the other’s eyes. Involuntarily, his mouth quirked up into a reassuring smile. He tilted his head, gesturing the Ghost King to lead on. It would be fine. Perhaps one day, when everything blows over, when his brother finally feels remorse over his actions and when He Xuan finally is ready to forgive his brother. Perhaps then, they can all reunite and have a meal together. What a sight that would make! Wouldn’t that be something to look forward to?

Though at the rate they were going, it'll take more than a few centuries for that to happen...

“Take care, big brother.”

~.~.~.~

“Shizun, what are you thinking of?” Arms latched onto his waist and tugged him to a broad chest behind. He leaned back into the embrace, relishing the feel of the larger frame pressing against him.

“Nothing much. Where have you been?”

“Shizun, do you love me?”

Without any kind of preamble, it’s rather scary when one hears such an opening to a conversation. A foreboding dread filled Shi Qingxuan. He swallowed indiscernibly, feeling rather intimidated at what was to come. Trying to wheedle something out of me? He sniped internally at the other thick-faced party. Without missing a beat, he smiled demurely, “of course.”

“Then Shizun wouldn’t mind doing me a small favour right?”

“What is it?”

The arms around Shi Qingxuan loosened and reached for something behind him. Shi Qingxuan heard the crinkling of paper, as though He Xuan was unwrapping something. A flash of red was seen from the corner of his eye. The arms were back again, this time instead of hugging him, they turned him around so that the two faced each other. He Xuan earnestly looked at him and presented the items in his hands to him.

“Let’s get married again, Shizun!”

Marriage vows usually last for a lifetime, so it made sense to renew them after a reincarnation. If he was to admit, he was rather touched that Binghe remembered about it and have already planned so quickly for their wedding. It must have taken him lots of effort to plan for it, on top of getting the house and their daily necessities. Really, Shen Yuan had no qualms marrying Binghe again, but what he saw in the other’s hands made him pause. He hesitated, and a similar shade of red bloomed on his face. His brain had fried the instant he caught sight of it.

Cue mental meltdown.

?!?!?!

Ahhhh! What the fuck!!!

Why is it a female’s wedding gown?!?! Aren’t you going too far????

Even though the items were sourced for in a short time, He Xuan definitely didn’t scrimp on anything. The red gown was intricately made, embroidery of phoenixes glittered under the light. The contrasting gold linings made the outfit glow even more. The material looked soft and exceedingly comfortable to wear. Even the bridal headdress looked exquisite. Fine gold looped intricately, and gems of red and green adorned it. It was excellent craftsmanship. As an ex-god of wealth, Shi Qingxuan gave it a thumbs up. But! Why! Was! It! For! Him?!?!

Perhaps sensing his reluctance, Binghe swiftly dealt a low blow, “Shizun, haven’t you always bullied me into turning into a woman with you?”

Fuck, he really remembered!! How humiliating!!

Shi Qingxuan knew that would come back to bite him in the ass!! Why did he think it was a good idea?!

“Why won’t you do it now?” He Xuan blinked his eyes rapidly, shooting Shi Qingxuan a sad aggrieved puppy eyes. His lips turned down into an adorable pout. Even though his face was extremely different from his previous incarnation, this did not make his pleading eyes any less effective. Though it seemed rather strange because He Xuan had never made such an expression before, even when disguised as Ming Yi.

Ahhhh! Why are you bullying me?!?!

Glancing at the tears welling up in the other’s eyes, Shen Yuan felt his resolve crumbling.

Ugh...

Unsurprisingly, he relented in the end.

~.~.~.~

Moonlight spilled into the bamboo hut, giving it an ethereal glow. The few candle lights littered around the room further brightened it up, illuminating the room's contents in a warm orange. Two figures in red could be seen beside a bed. Both were staring at each other, appreciating the view each presented.

“Shizun looks best in red after all.”

Shi Qingxuan tactfully did not mention the crack at the end of the sentence, nor the tears that were threatening to fall from the other’s eyes again.

As per tradition, the duo did the three bows. Usually, the three bows were dedicated to the Heavens, parents and each other respectively. But given their special circumstances, they merely bowed to each other thrice- One of them was a powerful ghost hated by the Heavens, and the other was a fallen/fake Heaven Official. One of them had also indirectly caused the death of the other’s parents, and also whose closest kin almost died under the other’s hand.

As stated, complicated.

Shi Qingxuan then busied herself by pouring two cups of wine, adept at doing it by now. Bringing one cup to the other party, the two interlocked their arms and downed the contents.

Huahh! This was good stuff! Shi Qingxuan smacked her lips, a little tempted to have one more cup. But then he- or should it be she now- saw what her disciple was doing. Clearing her throat, she asked sternly, “what do you think you’re doing?"

The other froze. He was in the middle of spreading a layer of white silk cloth on the bed. “Shizun, it’s tradition! A requirement for a newlyweds’ first night,” He Xuan proclaimed solemnly, though the mischievous twinkle in his eyes gave his true feelings away.

This is really taking a mile when given an inch!

Shi Qingxuan felt like crying, bemoaning the devious streak Binghe has no matter the incarnation. Though he probably grew up this way because, Shen Qingqiu had overly indulged his disciple. It was too late to regret his nurturing methods though.

He Xuan then surged in, capturing her lips with his own. The taste of sweet wine mingled between them. She nipped gently on his lips in retaliation, though obediently opened her mouth to let him in. The following open-mouthed kiss left her dizzy and gasping for breath. Though she wasn’t allowed any reprieve as the Ghost King’s hands have already wandered down during the kiss. They groped inappropriately at her chest, pawing at her.

Once their lips parted, his hands made quick work in undressing her, leaving her only in the white inner robes.

“You're wearing too much as well,” she whispered softly in the night, voice a little hoarse from earlier. Needless to say, He Xuan’s outer red robes joined her own on the floor, crumpled and forgotten. In a small corner of her mind, she lamented at the disrespect of such good clothes.

Under the dim illumination of the room, Shi Qingxuan appreciated the view presented to her. He Xuan’s hair was undone, spilling over his shoulders like soft silky curtains. His normally solemn face was pinched a little, as though he was nervous. He ducked down and pried open her legs. Embarrassment heated her entire face, and she flopped down onto the bed, unwilling to watch anymore. Her hands came up to bury her face in mortification, as she felt He Xuan’s breaths tickling her sensitive inner thighs.

The first lick startled her badly. The warm and moist tongue drew a wet line up from her thigh, to her second lips below. She could feel the warm breath of his exhale caressing her sensitive spots. He Xuan lapped experimentally first, before becoming bolder and diving in. He gave her longer licks and mapped out the area entirely with his tongue. Shi Qingxuan’s legs kicked out when he sucked and nibbled slightly on her clitoris. The sensation too overwhelming for her. “Ngh… Binghe…”

His tongue eagerly danced around her sensitive spots, and the sound of slurping gradually grew louder as she got wetter. It synchronised with the moans that were spilling from Shi Qingxuan’s mouth. Even though her hand was trying to muffle the obscene sounds coming out of her, it was to no avail. She squirmed self-consciously.

Too good! It feels too good!

A sudden pause in administrations gave her a short respite. Before she could catch her breath though, she felt a slimy foreign object wriggle into her hole, penetrating her slightly. The sliding of the tongue against her inner walls made another vivid burst of arousal ignite in her.

A keening sound left her throat.

These sensations were foreign to her, as she has never done it before in a female form. Unfamiliar, but not unpleasant. Heat continued to pool under her navel. As He Xuan’s tongue continue to flex and poke into her, it left her gasping and twisting in the sheets. Her hips buckled, but she was unsure whether she was retreating from the overwhelming stimulation or begging for more. She tugged on his hair warningly and he reluctantly came up after a final nip on her outer folds, as if saying goodbye.

As she laid wheezing on the bed, legs askew, He Xuan busied on the side of the bed. Just as she was about to ask him what he was doing, he came back to her side. She could see his fingers coated with slick.

“Relax,” he murmured and started to pepper butterfly kisses on her jawline, down to her neck and collarbone. At the same time, his hand moved down and a finger tentatively eased her open. He went extremely slow and careful, as if afraid of hurting her. The index finger was soon joined by the middle finger. With two fingers slowly thrusting into her, it was imminent they hit a soft spot in her. A moan spilled from her lips.

With a soft rumble, He Xuan focused his efforts on teasing the sensitive spot within her. A poke from him was returned with a hitch of breath from her. A slight graze and an obscene groan escaped her lips. The actions derailed her so much that Shi Qingxuan did not notice that a third finger has been added. She did however notice that He Xuan was getting twitchy. His breaths became laboured.

How cute! The Ghost King was restraining himself not to go fast even though he’s this aroused. Not wanting to make her husband wait any longer, she murmured out her consent to move on.

The fingers were gone and before she could bemoan the abrupt emptiness, He Xuan maneuvered in between her legs. A blunt tip poked at her entrance and slowly eased in. Though they went slow, it still was slightly painful for Shi Qingxuan. A little blood was shed and dripped onto the white cloth below. Her entire body was taut. She clenched hands and gritted her teeth as her body tried to accommodate the wide girth in her. With her lying prone on the bed, He Xuan seemed to notice her discomfort and gave her time to adjust. Rubbing soft circles on her side, his low voice comforted her.

After a while, when he deemed her to be ready, he retreated and thrusted in slightly with caution. Seeing no signs of pain on her face, he became bolder. His hands went under her knees, spreading her legs even wider. His pace fastened slightly and one of his hands left to roam and twist her nipples.

The movements’ sensations gradually changed from barely tolerable to pleasurable for Shi Qingxuan. Each thrust was now accompanied by a broken whimper from her. She covered her mouth with her hands, extremely humiliated by the loud moans she was making. She’s not starring in some porno, damn it! But her hands were removed almost immediately by He Xuan.

"I want to hear you," he requested. His voice earnest and his eyes stared down adoringly at her. Such a sight made Shi Qingxuan even more breathless, her heart doing little flips at intervals.

The creaking of the bed became louder, as he set a merciless pace. He pistoned in vigorously. One of Shi Qingxuan’s leg fell to the bed due to gravity, while the other was hiked up on his right shoulder. She lied sideways as this position allowed him to reach to the deepest parts of her, making her feel every movement intensely.

One of his hands continued to explore her body, roaming shamelessly. It brushed against her clitoris and a million volts jolted through her. A high-pitched sound was wretched from her mouth and all she could see was the explosion of stars. The unbearable heat that was growing within surged forth like the tide.

“Ahnn!”

“Does it feel good Shizun? It feels very good for me. Shizun’s very warm and moist inside. All open up for me,” he blew a warm breath on her ear as he whispered those lewd contents unrepentantly.

“Shut up! Ah!” She clenched hard and reached down to pinched his inner thigh. A low groan, and his hands came to secure her waist in order to thrust even faster. In reaction to that, her toes curled in with pleasure and she moved her hips in tandem with her husband's tempo. The frantic sound of flesh hitting flesh resounded in the dainty hut. She could even hear a squelching sound at each movement too.

“Ah ah ah- slower Binghe, I can’t.”

“Shiz- Niangzi, say it to me once. Call me properly once more!”

Another two rapid jabs in, before he paused and rotated his hips wantonly.

“Uwah He Xuan, Ming-xiong ah- stop!”

One long stab, followed by three short thrusts. All of which rubbed and placed pressure on a sensitive spot in her.

“Niangzi!!” He whined shamelessly, unlike the fearsome Devastation ghost that he was supposed to be.

Feeling her insides churn and unable to take the tormenting stimulation anymore, she finally gave in. She wailed out, feeling bullied, “Xiang gong, husband! Ahh! Ngh!”

A soft smile graced the ghost’s face and he reached out the caress her cheeks. Gently wiping the sweat gathered at the sides of her brow, he whispered out with such hope that it was almost painful to hear, “Niangzi, my wife...”

Earnestly, he resumed pounding into her, turning her mind into goo. Every thrust struck home, rubbing against her spot. Her hands weakly came to lock around his neck, holding on for her dear life. Each jerk sent her spiraling down into greater pleasure. The fingers were back on her clit, pinching and nudging. Faster and faster until their entire room filled with lustful cries and obscene noises. At a particularly hard pinch, she stilled and with a broken cry, came forcefully. The clenching of her passageway brought him over the edge as well.

The two collapsed onto the bed, huffing and trying to catch their breaths. After a while, He Xuan adjusted their positions to a more comfortable one, turning Shi Qingxuan to face him in a relaxed embrace. She snuggled in shamelessly and placed her hand around his waist. Together, they basked in the afterglow, gazing intimately at each other. It has been far too long since they had done it properly.

He Xuan hugged her closer and started rubbing the top of her head with his cheeks. “I really missed you,” he mumbled out.

Thinking back to the five years her disciple thought that she was dead, and how he had guarded over Shen Qingqiu’s corpse obsessively, Shi Qingxuan had no doubts believing him. She wriggled up, burying her head into the hollow of his chest. She replied, “I know, I missed you too.”

Her mouth twitched up at that and she was glad that they were together once again. Not as perfect as those couples described in fiction, but perfect enough for her anyways.

~.~.~.~

“Niangzi, I have something for you.”

“... stop calling me that.”

“It’s your bride price though.”

?!?! Excuse me?! Does it look like I have a dowry for you? My only remaining family doesn’t even want us to get married!

Shen Yuan was extremely aggrieved, and was going to harass his husband as punishment when he caught sight of the gift.

His eyes lit up immediately and his mouth clicked shut.

Binghe noticed his reaction and smirked. He probably knew what was running through his Shizun’s head. Surprisingly, he didn’t take the chance to make fun of Shi Qingxuan. He was as obedient as a dog and proudly presented the gift with his two hands.

Shi Qingxuan had turned back to a male and was lying comfortably on the bed. Upon his disciple's approach, he eagerly propped himself up and reached for the gift.

A green bamboo fan nestled invitingly in his disciple’s hands. When Shen Yuan took it gingerly, he felt that the bamboo was of good quality- smooth and sturdy. A mild scent of bamboo could be detected by his sharp nose.

Opening it wide, his breath was caught. It was a cross between one of his favourite fans in Qing Jing Peak, and his Wind Master fan. An illustration of bamboo stalks on a mountain was hand painted on one side. Peeking through the bamboo was a small hut, barely visible. The misty clouds surrounded the peak and on the right side was a twenty first century love poem he once recited to Binghe. He recalled mentioning that it was his favourite.

On the flip side of the fan was the chinese character for “wind”. While it may look plain, the strength of the strokes was apparent. The calligraphy style was visually appealing and Shen Yuan tenderly traced his finger over it.

Did Binghe write this on his own?

He delicately flipped the fan around, admiring the skilled workmanship. Sending his powers into the fan, he gauged this spiritual device to be as strong as, or even stronger than his old one.

Too efficient! Shi Qingxuan spent months making his old one! How long did He Xuan take to do this?!?!

Said person was standing on one side and scrutinising Shen Yuan’s reaction. Upon seeing his awestruck face, he asked almost timidly, “Shizun likes it? This disciple is sorry to have broken your old one...”

Bringing the fan to hide the lower part of his face, he nodded gracefully. Even though the fan concealed his smile, his crescent eyes told of his elation at having a fan in his hand once again. This was a very un-Shi Qingxuan action but more of what the elegant Qing Jing Peak Lord would do.

Ahh how he missed this!

He reached out with his other hand to pat the other party’s head. His heart sang, happy at the familiar weight in his hand. Good job! Well done! This Master is proud of you!

A delightful smile split his disciple’s face.

And thus goes the story of the terrifying Black Water Sinking Ship and noble Lord Wind Master.

Chapter Text

Stepping out of the bamboo hut, a fragrant scent of flowers permeated the air. The wind danced and swirled in the midst of spring, joyfully celebrating the blooming of nature. Dashes of green and white hues rolled far and wide, perking up the morning like a masterful piece of artwork.

A figure in white and pale green took slow steps. Calculated and steady, as though he had a destination in mind but was in no hurry to reach there. His eyes flitted from tree to flower, a tint of admiration coloured his countenance. A soft and almost mysterious smile accentuated his kindly features. Raven hair half tied up into a bun, the remaining half flew free with the wind. As if with a life on its own, the inky strands gently swayed and framed the individual. With a pale green fan in the figure’s hand, a scholarly air enveloped him and completed his look.

And then, a jubilant and sincere smile stretched across his youthful face. His arm which held the fan no longer lied prone at his side. It came up, and rhythmically tapped the fan on his milky chin. His pace quickened, as if he could not wait to pounce on the distant figure he had just spotted.

Reaching the other figure, he paused in his steps and stood side by side with him. The other figure was taller than him by a few centimetres. Cloaked in black from head to toe, it was as if he had sucked the colour out from a small part of the garden. His unearthly ivory skin looked even paler in the morning sun.

Under a purple wisteria tree, the two figures stood contrastingly beside each other. It looked as if two immortals had descended into the mortal realm, gracing it with their presence. The atmosphere was electrifying and the two gazed intimately at one another.

Another gust of wind blew strong and wild, hurling their hair in all directions. The plants were of no exceptions. The loose leaves and petals stood no chance and were blown away from their homes. Hues of emerald and purple scattered and flew around the entire area. Some even spread their wings and fluttered to the blue sky above. The billowing encased the duo in their own world. Emboldened by the tranquility, the white figure stepped in even closer. He placed the fan into his sleeves before reaching with both hands up to the other person.

And he pinched He Xuan’s cheeks. Tugging on them gently, Shi Qingxuan pouted. “Why won’t you smile more? You used to smile so much more last time,” Shi Qingxuan complained.

The corners of He Xuan’s lips quirked up slightly at that. One of his hands closed around the Wind Master’s hand which was still pulling on his cheeks. He pulled that hand to his mouth, placing a chaste kiss on the long slender fingers. His other hand went to the Wind Master’s face and gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind his ears.

“Shizun smiles much more freely now,” He Xuan commented casually. Bending in to steal a quick kiss from the Wind Master, he continued, “You look much better with a smile.”

Shi Qingxuan’s heart thudded and roared at that. A slight tinge of red dusted his cheeks. One could probably see smoke escaping his ears. He tilted his head away, attempting to hide his growing blush. In doing so, he missed the mischievous glint in his disciple’s eyes. A look that would infuriate him to no end and whack the other on the head.

Fuck! So smooth! Do all Supremes have a mandatory class on seduction??

Twisting his hand that was in the other’s grip, he clasped their hands tightly and dragged He Xuan out from the shade of the tree.

“What nonsense are you talking about? Let’s go!”

~.~.~.~

The Imperial Capital. One of Shi Qingxuan’s favourite places to hang out at. Lively chatter and laughter overlap each other. Clanging sounds of objects being bartered resounded. Occasionally, a lively tune would flow out from certain establishments, adding on to the hype of the city. People from all walks of life mingled and strolled on the streets, unknowing that a Devastation-ranked ghost and a Heavenly Official walked amongst them.

Leisurely strolling together with He Xuan along the crowded street, the couple looked rather mismatched. One stood tall and calmly passed the street vendors. The other was flitting from one stall to the other, cajoling the other party into buying him different snacks. It did not take a keen observer to notice the endearing looks the black figure was shooting at his enthusiastic companion.

Chewing the tanghulu in his hand, Shi Qingxuan sighed in bliss. Ahh it’s so good to have a shameless personality! What is an aloof, cold and distant immortal compared to freedom? Those can go to hell!

The two entities were having a whale of a time. It felt like their honeymoon all over again, travelling to different locations and not being chained down by responsibilities. The duo had decided to leave Heaven as far as possible. They didn’t wanted to be part of Jun Wu’s manipulation and thus had to stay under the radar. Plus, now that Black Water’s spy identity was revealed, they had to be careful of any retaliation from Jun Wu. Though nothing was mentioned in the original story, it’s best for them to be cautious. As promised, Shi Qingxuan followed wherever his disciple dragged him to.

As he was shamelessly coaxing He Xuan to buy a bottle of wine from the best restaurant in the area, he paused. In the corner of his eye, Shi Qingxuan swore that he spotted a familiar mint green uniform and a dash of blue-black. Turning fully to face the two anomalies at the stall opposite the street, he almost dropped his newfound snacks.

“Shizun?” He Xuan shot him a questioning look when he realised his companion had stiffened up. But Shi Qingxuan did not reply. He was busy gazing in disbelief at the two people across the street. His mind went to a complete standstill and incredulity flooded through him. Because it was exactly who he thought he would never see again.

Shang Qinghua and Mobei Jun!

Huh. Did Airplane’s experiment with dimensional artifacts succeeded after all? Or perhaps they had never left their old world at all?

Actually that made sense! Shen Yuan mentally berated himself harshly. He should have known once the system revealed the ridiculous condition for He Xuan to regain his memories!

Since when Heaven Official’s Blessing had such a stupid plot device?! It doesn’t even have a papapa scene!

Airplane Shooting Towards The Sky!! It’s all your fault!!

By now, the other couple had noticed him staring perplexedly at them and walked over together. Shi Qingxuan felt He Xuan tense up, most likely noticing their old friends as well. Shang Qinghua approached them, putting on a disarming smile. “Hello fellow cultivators, what seems to be the problem?”

Fuck you! Everything! It’s all because of you!

Shi Qingxuan will eat his own fan if Shang Qinghua doesn’t know that he’s talking to the Wind Master and Black Water. He’s a writer! He definitely know of this popular novel and recognise its characters.

While a treacherous storm raged in his mind, Shi Qingxuan slipped back into his old Qing Jing Peak Lord persona. His expression showed no obvious changes, and his demeanour became more detached and aloof. Demurely snapping his Wind Master fan opened, he fanned it lightly as he had always done and smiled deceptively at the duo.

“Indeed, what seems to be the problem?” He breezily threw back another question at them.

Seeing such a familiar move, Shang Qinghua paled, perhaps feeling a foreboding sense of danger. Possibly his sensitive survival instinct kicked in as well, for he inched closer to the ice demon standing behind him.

“Airplane Shidi. It looks like you’ve been doing well after our last- hmm- meeting,” and a smile with too many teeth flashed on his face.

“Cu- cu- cumber bro???” A flash of recognition and the stutterings fell out of Shang Qinghua’s mouth. Turning to the other person beside Shi Qingxuan, he gasped out. “Then you must be Luo- ….”

Shi Qingxuan felt a sadistic sense of satisfaction when Shang Qinghua looked on the verge of passing out. Or crying for his life. Or both. Metaphorical tears fell from the ex-author’s eyes and he looked as if he was praying to all the gods in existence.

Well, pity none of the gods he knew would be kind enough to answer his absurd prayers.

Snapping his fan shut, Shi Qingxuan gave a proposal, “Won’t Shidi invite us back to your place? It seems that we have lots to catch up on.”

~.~.~.~

“Hahah! Imagine our shock when you both died in the explosion. After that, everyone was so angry!”

The quartet enterred a humble abode, made from sturdy and varnished wood. The wood gleamed under the natural lighting. The house was furnished generously, sufficient for one to receive a few guests at once. Decorated slightly with some haphazard calligraphy and piled with odd books around the room, it looked no different from Shang Qinghua’s house at An Ding Peak. “Oh man, remembering Liu Qingge’s face just gives me nightmares.”

“They really wanted to kill me! But Mobei Jun brought me away to hide, thankfully!”

The four sat around a square table, teapots and snacks filled the space within their circle. Wafts of steam from the tea twirled up and dissipated into the humid air.

“And then, the demons mostly either died out or went into hiding. Humans don’t really remember them anymore! Can you imagine? Thinking of them as fantasy!”

If an outsider were to stumble onto this scene, they would have no problem believing that it was four scholars gathering and discussing about the academia. They sure look the part. Though if one were to hear of the contents of their conversation, they might flee, thinking them to be possessed or delusional.

“The cultivators of our age mostly ascended to become heavenly officials. Well I don’t know much about the happenings of Heaven cause I stayed here with Mobei Jun.”

“But from what I know, the newer folks started to replace them after a few centuries in. So now they probably would have faded away. There might be one or two still alive and kicking though.”

One ex-author was animatedly sharing with his long lost buddy about the things he missed after he had died. The others listened captivatingly- two earnestly wanting to know more, one being respectful.

“You're the only one I see reincarnated. Or perhaps we passed by them, but they don’t have their memories so it wasn’t ever found out.”

“Imagine my surprise when you two popped up hahahha!”

As he came to the end of the story, he realised that the duo was staring a little distastefully at him. The disdain clear in their eyes. They were probably dissatisfied at the way he glossed over their deaths casually as if he had nothing to do with it.

Sweating nervously, he whimpered out, “Cucumber-bro you won’t be mad at me right? Hahahahha….”

He stood up rigidly when there wasn’t a reply, and stiffly walked over to the side to grab something. Coming back, he removed the cloth covering the object and held it as a peace offering to the other two. “Here’s Xiu Ya and Zheng Yang, we repaired and maintained them for you.”

At this, Shi Qingxuan finally reacted externally. A nostalgic look graced his face and he tenderly took the two swords from his hands. He Xuan reached out for his sword in his Shizun’s hands, looking fondly as he patted his long lost blade affectionately. Shi Qingxuan drew Xiu Ya slightly out of its scabbard, and an ethereal glow shone from the sword’s blade. He sighed. “Can we still use them? Our spiritual powers are different from our previous incarnation.”

Shang Qinghua flapped his hands flippantly at him. “I can always just write it in. This world grew from The Proud Immortal Demonic Way, so my writing still has some hold over it. Xiu Ya and Zheng Yang are the original items too.”

Shi Qingxuan froze.

Unable to read the atmosphere, the transmigrator continued to blabber away. “Anyways, so you’ve reincarnated as the Wind Master? That guy literally has the opposite personality of Shen Qingqiu. Though it’s closer to your original personality, isn’t it?”

?!?!?!

“But Lord Binghe as Black Water? Talk about the irony, with you two casting as these two characters.”

Shut up!!! Wtf are you saying in front of the other two?!?!

Shen Yuan screamed internally, just an inch away from throttling the other person.

Did he hit a few screws loose over the years?! Or was he growing senile?!?!

Shen Yuan took the risk and glanced at the other two occupants in the room. Luo Binghe’s face was scrunched up, as he stared quizzically at Shang Qinghua. No doubt he was trying to decode what the ex-An Ding Peak Lord had said. The prior few sentences probably sounded like gibberish to him.

And Mobei Jun- eh? He didn’t look a tad confused. In fact, he looked as if he understood whatever Airplane-bro had just sprouted out.

Airplane Towards The Sky!!! What did you do ah?!

Shang Qinghua- bless his soul- finally realised the looks he was garnering from the other two. His face lit up in understanding and confessed. “Oh uhm I told Mobei Jun already. About our origins…We’ve been together for so long, I have to say the truth some time you know...” he trailed off awkwardly in a laugh. As if reading Shen Yuan’s mind, he finally noticed the weird atmosphere. Oscillating his gaze between Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu. He noted the growing perplexed look in Luo Binghe’s eyes. “You didn’t sa-?”

“Shut up!” Shen Yuan exclaimed loudly in English, finally done with him revealing their secrets all in one go. He slammed on the table and his chair screeched in protest when he jumped up to a standing position.

Shang Qinghua squealed in surprise and ducked underneath the table at the sudden aggressiveness. “I’m very sorry- please don’t kill me…” He tentatively peeked out from under the table, looking warily at Xiu Ya which was placed on the table, within reach to its user.

Trying not the stab Shang Qinghua in the eye with his fan, he glared hostilely at the cowering man. His pathetic, morose look wasn’t going to fool him!

However, after realising the looks that the other two were giving him, he coughed awkwardly into his hand. Dragging the other man out of the room as fast as he could, he sniped out, “Shang Shidi and I have something to discuss. Give us a moment, I’m sure you two would want to catch up as well.”

In the safety of the other room, Shen Yuan flapped his fan and constructed an array to prevent eavesdroppers. Then, he rounded on his fellow transmigrator, “What the hell?!”

“Cucumber-bro! Forgive me!! I really didn’t know! With how you act with him all the time, I thought you already told him!!”

A grimace split Shen Yuan’s face. He honestly didn’t... While the thought had came up before, he always chickened out before succeeding. Guilt gnawed at him, rather ashamed of himself as well.

Shang Qinghua noticed the conflicting expression on his face, and wisely decided not to say anything for once. Flicking his eyes downward, he blinked in surprise. “Eh that fan. The ink looks kind of different.”

“Hm? Binghe gave this to me.”

“OH?! That ink’s made from his cremated ashes?? Wow, he’s really dedicated to you. Though that isn’t too surprising, isn’t it?”

Shen Yuan squinted at him dubiously. He had heard of the tradition where high ranking ghosts give their cremated ashes to their chosen ones. Since that’s their only weakness- destroy it and they’ll be dead- the tradition is extremely symbolic and rarely executed. After all, it was literally putting their own lives in the other’s hands. He flipped the fan wide open to inspect the ink again. “You’re saying this ink is made from his cremated ashes? You’re sure?”

“Positive! I’ve seen many things after so many years. This isn’t my first time meeting such an item.” Shang Qinghua affirmed confidently.

Shen Yuan didn’t know what to feel at that. He was honestly touched. It was a really romantic thing to do, and an extremely Binghe-move as well. Distantly, he wondered if it meant that he was showing off his marriage status every time he used his fan. Like those modern couples who like to flash their rings at every person that they meet.

If he was in the right state of mind, he would be so appalled at the revelation. But currently, his predominant feeling was not indignation.

It was shame.

Here was his husband, being so devoted and trusting to him despite their bad blood this incarnation. His husband who cared so much that he even gave him his cremated ashes, despite knowing how clumsy he was with his fans! It was undeniable proof of his love and affection. Yet here Shen Yuan was, being so distant to him. In their current lives, Binghe was also under the reincarnation system. If he could plot and scheme with Airplane-bro so openly last time, he could definitely share these things with Binghe now.

In fact, wouldn’t Binghe have noticed the system’s interference already? Yet he kept silent, not asking further questions. He probably suspected something but did not pry, respecting the boundaries that Shen Yuan had drawn.

Tracing his finger pads over the smooth bamboo fan, reproach filled his entire being. Perhaps it was time to come clean.

Binghe at least deserved that much from him.

~.~.~.~.~

It was night time when the two emerged from the room. The crickets chirped noisily as the two went to locate their respective husbands. The four bade farewell to each other at the threshold of the house, with the two promising to come by again the next day.

Quickly arriving back to their own bamboo hut due to the ever convenient Distance Shortening Array, the two silently busied themselves, preparing to turn in. Gazing at his husband fondly, Shen Yuan’s heart skipped a beat. He blew out the candles and in the safety of the dark, he joined his husband in their bed. Almost immediately, he felt hands straying across his body, slowly heading south, indicating the hunger the other party felt.

A set of lips captured his own and devoured his soft moans in the night. In the blurry haze of pleasure that was building in him, Shen Yuan came to a decision.

Well, it’s now or never.

~.~.~.~

A hard thrust rocked the bed.

“Bing- ah -he?”

The other party paused slightly in his administrations and bent down.

“Mhm Shizun?”

Binghe ground his hips forward, sending sparks of pleasure shooting up Shen Yuan’s spine.

“Mhmm. Binghe… I haven’t been entirely honest with you…”

A hand came up to tweak his nipples, before pinching it. As if admonishing him for his behaviour. A sound of affirmation rumbled in the other’s throat, before prompting, “System?”

...he really didn’t know where to start explaining from...

Not receiving a reply, the other continued to slide in and out of him. His pace even more merciless than before.

“Ah- ahh- Binghe slow down.”

Without missing a beat, he replied, “Not until Shizun tells me.”

"…"

Hands tightened around his hips and thrust even harder.

“Uwah! I’m sorry Bingh- Husband. Slow down! Slow down! I’ll tell you.”

~.~.~.~

Post-coital, Shen Yuan lied dazedly against Binghe, too exhausted to move. Well that went well, he supposed. Mentally and physically drained, his eyes fluttered shut. He would have drifted off to sleep if not for the shifting of the body beside him.

“Shizun?”

“Mm?”

“Was that why you pushed me down into the Abyss?”

Oh… his eyes snapped open at that, the drowsiness chased away by that line.

“...En…”

“Oh…”

"…"

“Do you hate me for that?” His breath stilled, not daring to exhale too loudly, afraid to break the moment. As if his breathing or lack thereof would change the other party’s answer, the logical side of his mind supplemented helpfully.

“No…”

To his dying day, he would never admit it, but he teared up a little at that. It was as if a heavy weight was finally taken off his chest. He blinked rapidly. Suddenly he felt liberated, for the very first time since he had transmigrated. A humming sound escaped his throat and his arms squeezed the other party’s hips.

After a beat, “Shizun… what was your original name?”

“Is that important? I’ve been Shen Qingqiu for much longer than my first life. I’ve spent my existence as Shi Qingxuan for even longer. I… I ceased to be the person I was since the very first time I woke up as Shen Qingqiu.” In the quiet of the night, their breathing sounded extremely loud to Shen Yuan. The crickets outside croaked noisily, adding on to the cacophony of noise.

“It’s important,” Binghe finally breathed out. “Every part of Shizun is important to this disciple. Would Shizun be willing to share with this disciple?”

“My surname is Shen. Given name is Yuan.”

“Shen Yuan,” Binghe exhaled out in reverence, uttering out with the utmost care. It was as if he was just given the greatest gift, or a miracle. He repeated once more, “Shen Yuan.”

“En.”

“Shen Yuan.”

“Mhm.”

“Ah-yuan.”

At that, Shen Yuan flustered. He buried his head into the broad chest in front of him. “Mm.”

The very next day, if Shang Qinghua noticed that his “son” was happier than usual, he tactfully mentioned nothing and merely beckoned the duo into his house.

Notes:

Chapter Text

A few months later saw Shi Qingxuan practicing his sword forms. Under the large wisteria tree outside their bamboo hut, his figure made clean and sharp strokes. His face, dotted with perspiration from the physical exertion, was filled with intense focus. Eyebrows slightly furrowed, he turned a full circle and stabbed his sword to the front. Xiu Ya was shining radiantly in his right hand, making “ching” sounds every now and then.

Shi Qingxuan, by all means, was not a martial god. His mind may remember the Qing Jing Peak martial arts, but his body was severely out of practice. Without the necessary muscle mass or muscle memory, he fumbled greatly at the execution of the more complex moves.

At a particularly sharp twist, his body wobbled, before jerking unnaturally and falling to the ground in a heap.

“...”

How humiliating!!! Luckily no one’s around to see that spectacular failure. Could you imagine?! The ex-Qing Jing Peak Lord inelegantly face planting and eating dirt!

Coughing slightly, he picked himself up from the ground and dusted off the dirt. He continued practising, pretending nothing had happened. Gritting his teeth, he redid the set from the start. He really wanted to finish learning this set today. He Xuan was picking up the sword forms way faster than him, already being ahead by three sets. As his Shizun, how could he let his disciple out do him!

No way says his dignity!

Resisting the urge to pout, Shi Qingxuan took a deep breath and focused on his movements. The wisteria tree filtered most of the harsh afternoon sun, and provided the Heavenly Official a much needed shade. His body moved gracefully like the wind, slow at certain times but swift at others. His grip on Xiu Ya was firm, and the familiar sensation caused a hint of nostalgia to flit through him. As if in agreement, the sword hummed lightly and glowed brighter.

He has to admit though that He Xuan’s results were warranted. The ghost seemed to be working even harder than before, honing his martial arts and cultivation level simultaneously. Recently, he was even contemplating of going into closed-door cultivation. It was as though he was trying to make up for the lack of Heavenly Demon heritage.

Shi Qingxuan exhaled, just as he flawlessly executed the last movement of the set. His worry for his husband outweighed the happiness of his success. He Xuan may be a high ranking ghost, but it was still a huge downgrade from his previous incarnation as a Demon Lord. Occasionally, Shi Qingxuan had caught him frustrated when he couldn’t break past his cultivation into the next level.

While Shi Qingxuan was concerned, it also figuratively induced him to cough out blood. His disciple’s learning speed was already much faster than his own! If his disciple wasn’t happy with his own progress, than what about this Shizun?!

Deep within his contemplation, he did not notice someone approaching him. The sudden exuberant voice beside him made him startle.

“Cucumber-bro! Guess what? We were just walking by the town and we saw a giant statue of Xie Lian battling in the sky!” Turning his head to the voice, Shi Qingxuan saw Airplane-bro’s face filled with glee and excitement. Trailing behind the ex-author were their husbands.

The former Wind Master blinked un-comprehensively at that. After a beat, he finally registered what Shang Qinghua had just said. Ah… so the final battle was starting.

“Can we-” Shang Qinghua started hesitantly.

“No.”

“Oh my god why?? I haven’t even said anything!”

“Didn’t we agree not to interfere?” The transmigrators had a lengthy chat a while back, and they decided not to mess with the storyline. Butterfly effect- they’re really traumatised by it still! What if they accidentally killed off someone? Or made someone else bent again?

While Shi Qingxuan shied away from the main story line, he had made plans to cover up the holes he left in the plot. Finding five hundred people to help form Xie Lian’s array had been no joke, but with Shang Qinghua’s help, they managed it and need not personally appear to aid the main characters of the novel.

“I won’t interfere, promise!! Can we watch? Cucumber-bro! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!” The ex-author’s whining went up by a notch.

That… was pretty tempting. You don’t get to see novel characters coming to life everyday to enact out the scenes. Nghhhh… He glanced at He Xuan, wordlessly prompting him for his input.

“Shizun can just do whatever he wishes to do. This disciple will follow,” He Xuan assured him.

With his disciple’s approval and Shang Qinghua’s pleading, Shi Qingxuan finally caved in.

“Alright fine! Now, how do we get to TongLu Mountain undetected?”

~.~.~.~

The four trudged wordlessly in the barren landscape. A scenery of desolate crimson red surrounded them. The unbearable heat was alleviated slightly with their own personal ice demon acting as a freezer. Magma churned and spluttered, lazily flowing downstream, and the dust and soot swirled in the air. Gravel clattered and crunched underneath their soles as they made their way forward. Soon, a cliff was in sight.

“I think they’re there,” Shang Qinghua whispered as he crept closer to the cliff edge. He was bent at an awkward angle, as he did not want to be spotted. The cliff was high enough to give them a vantage view. It was also far enough to prevent detection from all the Heavenly Officials and ghosts below.

Shi Qingxuan hummed and peered down the cliff. Sure enough, he could see a few figures dotting the area below. The most prominent would be Jun Wu, clad in white, carrying himself in a dignified stance. He spotted Hua Cheng and Xie Lian standing together, confronting said person. Behind the duo were Feng Xin, Mu Qing and an elderly person that Shi Qingxuan had never seen before. Presumably that would be the GuoShi.

Not after long, the antagonist and protagonists started to engage in battle. Swords clashed and blows were exchanged. Occasionally a scream or two was let out by either of those in battle. Though those words were lost to the wind and barely decipherable once they reached the quartet. Shang Qinghua let out a soft appreciative whistle as he admired the intense fight.

“All we need now is popcorn,” he snickered.

The turning point came when Hua Cheng finally broke Jun Wu’s armour, causing him to go into a greater rampage. Shi Qingxuan winced empathetically as Jun Wu bashed Xie Lian repeatedly against a boulder. The loud crunching sound of His Highness’s head coming into contact with the hard surface echoed all around them.

Shang Qinghua hummed thoughtfully at the scene and inched even closer, perhaps wanting to have a clearer view.

And then, he fell.

“Ahhhh!” Shang Qinghua’s scream reverberated loudly, and everyone in the vicinity snapped their heads towards the unexpected sound. The ex-author tumbled ungracefully down the steep slope and landed right in the midst of the chaos below.

Shi Qingxuan facepalmed.

Airplane-bro!!! What the actual fuck?! Why are you still so clumsy even after so long?! If you were going to fall, just die silently in a ditch! No need to draw attention to yourself!

By now, everyone was eyeing Shang Qinghua warily. Understandable, since they knew not of his identity and he had oh so mysteriously popped up in the middle of a battle. The other three were still safely hidden away, speechless at the development. He Xuan emitted a low snort, probably amused at the ex-author’s shenanigans, but with enough tact to not point it out in front of Mobei-Jun.

Down below, Jun Wu took a menacing step towards Shang Qinghua, letting go of Xie Lian for now. He brandished his sword and snapped, “Who’re you?”

Regaining his wits, the ex-An Ding Peak Lord scrambled back. He exclaimed, “Now now! Calm down everyone, we’re all Heaven Officials here. There’s no need for in fighting, is there?”

Everyone squinted at his face, but all of them devoid of recognition. They subtly assumed a defensive stance against the new unknown. Mu Qing snarked out what was in everyone’s mind, “Nope, never seen you before.”

“Alright! Alright! I came here to sightsee! No need to be aggressive. You all can continue with whatever you’re doing and I’ll just move along,” Shang Qinghua whimpered out, bemoaning his bad luck. He silently complained as to why his companions have not come out to save him yet.

“Huh? What scenery?” Feng Xin muttered disbelievingly.

“Admiring the ruins of volcano eruptions? What strong tastes!” Mu Qing tacked on snidely. Hua Cheng, who had rushed to Xie Lian’s side, nodded his head in agreement at that. Even Jun Wu twitched a little at the jab aimed at him regarding his destroyed kingdom.

“Eh- volcano eruptions destroyed this kingdom? Wasn’t that a few centuries back? Hm it sounds kinda familiar,” Shang Qinghua scratched his head thoughtfully, eyes narrowed in concentration as he sifted through his memories.

Mobei-Jun by now had effortlessly scaled down the cliff without anyone noticing. He popped up right beside Shang Qinghua, glancing at the man to ensure that he was not injured. He stoically said, “...you caused it.” While everyone was stunned at yet another person appearing, they were more intrigued by the words that were spoken.

“Haha my King! I didn’t know you learnt to joke. Whatever do you mean? hahahhaha-”

“The dimensional artefact. You threw it into the volcano, which eventually sparked the eruptions,” the ice demon helpfully reminded his husband of his misdeed, uncaring of the situation they were in.

“…”

“…”

Flabbergasted did not even come close to describing the extreme levels of shock everyone felt, especially for Shi Qingxuan. The urge to facepalm grew swiftly in him again. He felt an in-coming migraine twisting and snapping at his head, from all the problems his fellow transmigrator was giving him. His hand came up to pinch the bridge of his nose, trying to alleviate the mental suffering he was going through.

It was you??

The same kind of artefact that exploded and killed off this OP protagonist beside him?! What made you think that was a good idea!

Finally, one of the figures got over his shock. With an enraged snarl, Jun Wu lunged forward to attack Shang Qinghua. All of his hatred over the years was locked onto a single target in front of him. His eyes vicious with fury, heart set on vengeance against the supposed perpetrator of the destruction of his kingdom.

Shang Qinghua yelped and dodged away in the nick of time, hiding behind Mobei-Jun. The ice demon casually flicked Jun Wu’s attack away with his hand. His appearance unruffled and as nonchalant as before. He peered down at the Heavenly Official, as if looking down at an insect unworthy of his time.

Jun Wu having realised the strength of his opponent, backed up a few paces. He glanced down at the frost gathering at his sword, where it had came into contact with Mobei-Jun. A bewildered expression crossed his face. “You… What are you?”

For the upteenth time today, Shi Qingxuan sighed heavily. They were supposed to be just watching! Why had the plot derailed into such a state?! With the existence of demons being close to exposed, Shang Qinghua being the culprit of a main key event in the novel, and now them being caught up in the final battle of the novel.

How marvelous! Sarcasm intended. These two socially inept fools!! How is it they didn’t get any better at this after all these time?! Really they would be the death of him ugh!

He should have just insisted on not coming today and stayed home with Luo Binghe.

Before Jun Wu could attack once more, Shi Qingxuan and He Xuan jumped down to join the fray. Some damage control was necessary. Even Guo Shi at the side looked as if he wanted to pummel Shang Qinghua.

“That’s Wind Master and Black Water!” Xie Lian shouted in recognition, surprise marring his features. Rivulets of blood was still flowing down from his head wounds, covering parts of his face.

Shi Qingxuan smiled thinly at Xie Lian, his hand giving a brief wave. He immediately addressed everyone, “Now calm down. My friends here were making a bad joke. How could they possibly be alive in that era?”

Denial was Shen Yuan’s best friend no matter which incarnation. What can they do if you don’t admit to anything! Pausing a while to let the sentence sink in, he continued leisurely, “They came together with us, since we heard that His Highness and Crimson Rain Sought Flower were heading here. Thought that we could lend a hand.”

There was a slight snort of disbelief from Feng Xin, which Shi Qingxuan blatantly ignored.

“Aiyah Jun Wu, why don’t you give it up? It’s eight against one now. Isn’t it disadvantageous for you to continue fighting?” Shi Qingxuan attempted to reason with him.

Jun Wu obviously did not agree with Shi Qingxuan. Letting out a mirthless chuckle, Jun Wu made a strange gesture in the crown prince’s direction. Xie Lian fell with a cry as the curse marks around him were manipulated, with the sole aim of incapacitating him. The markings around his neck glowed an ominous purplish-black, as if sucking the life out of the martial god.

“Gege!” Hua Cheng cried out in horror, slightly shaking the unconscious man in his arms and attempting to wake him up. Feng Xin, Mu Qing and Guo Shi ran over hastily, crowding around the fallen martial god in concern.

With an internal promise to get even with Airplane-bro for this, Shi Qingxuan gestured at He Xuan to keep Jun Wu busy. He Xuan obliged, drawing Zheng Yang from its sheath. The blade visibly vibrated slightly, as though excited to see battle once more. He Xuan revealed a bloodthirsty grin and ordered Mobei-Jun and Shang Qinghua to stay away, before rushing at his foe. Swords met and adrenaline surged. Battle ensued once more.

While the duo were dueling, Shi Qingxuan rushed to Xie Lian’s side. “Move one side! Stop crowding over him if you aren’t helping!” He snapped out.

Seeing the disgruntled looks thrown his way, and none moving as per his instructions, Shi Qingxuan’s eye twitched. He unceremoniously shoved Feng Xin and Mu Qing away, and shuffled in to occupy the now vacated space beside Xie Lian. He ignored the loud protests thrown his way by the other two and noticed Hua Cheng holding Xie Lian’s hands tightly.

“You’re sending your powers to him to forcefully burst open the seals?”

An affirmative nod.

“You’re going to destabilise your cultivation! What’s His Highness going to do when he survives at the cost of your disappearance?” Shi Qingxuan cried out as he procured his fan from his sleeve to whack Hua Cheng’s hand. His action got what he had intended, as the channeling of powers halted. Before Hua Cheng could lash out at him for the interruption, he sniped out, “I’ll do it. I know how to remove the seals.”

Rolling his eyes when he sensed the doubt from the other, he bent down to examine the curse mark.

Shen Yuan may have transmigrated as Qing Jing Peak Lord and gotten the status unfairly, but he spent his remaining life studying all the books in his peak. Perhaps it was to make himself feel less like a fraud, wanting to be someone worthy of the title. To say that he was one of the most knowledgeable scholars would not be false.

And fortunately, he was no stranger to curses, seals and their dispelling techniques.

“Just saying, after this He Xuan does not owe you money anymore, Hua Cheng Zhu. And you better send some reparations for the damages caused at Black Water’s Lair.” Shi Qingxuan hummed out leisurely, once he identified the best counterspell for Xie Lian’s predicament.

“Done. Now help His Highness, quickly!” Hua Cheng’s reply came instantaneously.

Using his fan, Shi Qungxuan directed his spiritual powers to guide Hua Cheng’s powers. The powers which was churning aimlessly in Xie Lian’s meridians now surged with a purpose. He chanted silently in his mind as he did the counterspell. Honestly, this sort of seal wasn’t that hard for the former Qing Jing Peak Lord to break. Within a minute, the black curse marks around Xie Lian dissipated into the air, leaving behind unblemished skin.

Seeing that, Hua Cheng slumped in relief and nodded at him gratefully.

Shi Qingxuan snapped open his fan to hide his bright smile. Score! He had avoided an unnecessary long wait for the protagonists to get together and also managed to clear He Xuan’s debts, complementary with reimbursements. That was a win in his book. Looks like this trip was worth it after all.

Hua Cheng did a double take he saw the fan, presumably having identified its significance. Though his words were cut short when His Highness finally regained consciousness. Xie Lian’s eyelids were slowly fluttering open and when he saw the rest hovering above him, he squinted in confusion. Groaning softly, the crown prince sat up straight with the aid of Hua Cheng while getting caught up to the situation from the rest.

Xie Lian murmured softly, “Thank you, Lord Wind Mas- ah I shouldn’t call you that anymore right?”

“You can call me whatever, Your Highness. We’re still friends. How’s my brother doing?” Shi Qingxuan replied, while giving the casualty a cursory glance, checking for any lingering side effects from the spell.

“Still recuperating, especially since not having passed the tribulations. Are you not going to see him? He misses you greatly.”

Pursing his lips, Shi Qingxuan glanced at He Xuan, who was currently dragging a defeated Jun Wu by the ankle to them. The sounds of battle had long stopped, with his disciple being the obvious victor. His disciple looked extremely pleased, having won against Heaven’s ruler all by himself. Shi Qingxuan could read his expression easily, almost hearing the words ‘Shizun! Praise me! I did well, didn’t I?’

His mouth quirked up slightly at that, feeling proud. Looking back at Xie Lian who was still scrutinising him, he murmured out, “One day… perhaps one day.”

And thus with their intervention, things wrapped up smoothly and the ending was more or less the same, sans the dramatic disappearance by Hua Cheng.

"Say did your friend really-"

"No."

Eyebrows were raised at the defensiveness.

"Alright then..."

~.~.~.~

“You idiot!!”

“Ow!! Why did you hit me?!”

“Fuck! After your stunt you still dare to ask me that!”

“But Cucumber-bro! It was an accident!! Hones- Ow!!”

“Repent! You shitty author!!”

Notes:

One more chapter to go! I'm so excited for the last one HAHHA

P.S GuoShi is a title, something like a country advisor. Gege means brother

Also, some clarification about Shang Qingxuan here. He DID NOT intentionally cause the eruption, and was devastated when he found out what happened. Honestly, all he wanted to do was to get rid of the artefact that had caused the deaths of his closest friend and said friend’s husband. I won’t be able to go much into detail here, so I’ll leave it to your imaginations :)

Chapter Text

Illumination was low in the dank and spacious cave. The only light source was from the few meager candle lights, arranged in a neat circle at the center and flickering. The shadows casted on the dark walls loomed threatening. An array was being constructed in the middle of the circle, red dyeing the cave floor almost ominously.

Amidst the gloom and doom was a figure draped in black, kneeling in the array. His hands moved swiftly with precision, darting all over the floor. Wherever his fingers swiped, a long steady stroke trailed behind. The figure took his time to perfect the construction, both assured in his knowledge that no one would dare to disturb him and from the anxiety knowing that a single crooked line could blast him into smithereens.

Finally, a triumphant sound escaped the figure when he connected all the array lines neatly- it’s completed! As if he could expect anything less from himself. In testimony of his success, the array began to glow an eerie red, flooding the entire dungeon in a scarlet wash. The figure began to feed the array his spiritual powers to fully activate it, causing the glow to intensify to a searing white.

“Finally… It’s finished,” he chuckled darkly. Crimson eyes narrowed with glee, and the red mark on his forehead glowed even brighter, as the mysterious figure allowed the array to transport him to his intended destination.

“Shizun… I’m coming.”

~.~.~.~

Xie Lian was exhausted.

Following the defeat of his once mentor, he had to return to Heaven to deal with the aftermath. From re-organising the hierarchy of Heaven to re-building the infrastructure and temples of Heaven, Xie Lian took charge of it all. He roped in Ling Wen to assist him, much to her eternal dismay.

After that, Xie Lian managed to grab some down time to sneak out of Heaven, though it’s probably an open secret by now that he was meeting with Hua Cheng. While spending time with Crimson Rain Sought Flower was a good destressor all things considered, Xie Lian hasn’t have any proper sleep in a long time. The night activities that they were up to did not help matters at all.

Hua Cheng was an utter beast in bed. Xie Lian’s sore hips and the dark marks littering his body could attest to that; though he certainly wasn’t complaining.

Granted, he didn’t actually need sleep, being a Heaven Official and all.

With Hua Cheng’s ever efficient help, he managed to settle most of his duties as a Heavenly Official. Just as Xie Lian thought that he was on top of all his work and deserved a long break, he just had to lose his memories. Reverting back to his seventeen-years-old naive self was an extremely surreal experience for him. Even now he was in disbelief at the numerous things he had done(in front of Hua Cheng no less!). His amnesic self ran wildly around the entire place, making an absolute fool of himself, much to his horror when he regained his memories. Even worse, the prayers for him had piled up once again in the few days he went missing. He had to start sorting and clearing the prayers, lest they accumulate even further.

Xie Lian sighed inwardly, running a frustrated hand through his hair. He really was exhausted.

Coming to the present, he was currently lying on the bed in Hua Cheng’s place at Ghost City. Said person was behind him, arms around his waist. Both God and ghost were languidly lazing around, obviously procrastinating. Xie Lian’s limbs felt heavy, a warm content buzz tingled under his skin. His was too satisfied, too comfortable, to actually lift a finger to do actual work. However, the barrage of prayers constantly coming in weighed heavily in his mind, so he reluctantly sorted through them mentally- taking note of the important ones first, sieving them out from the less urgent prayers.

A surprised hum escaped his throat.

“Gege, what’s wrong?” The solid chest he was leaning against rumbled, and a familiar and soothing voice flowed into his right ear. Xie Lian melted further into the embrace at that, feeling the vibrations from San Lang’s breathing.

“It’s nothing much, San Lang. I’ve been receiving the same prayer from different people in the north region for the past hour.”

“Oh?”

“They all reported that an insane and agitated cultivator was swinging around a wicked-looking sword and screaming for someone to come out.”

“Does Gege intend to check it out?”

“Mhm yes. All attempts to subdue the cultivator have ended badly. It sounds like he’s going to wreak more havoc if not stopped.”

“I’ll come along,” Hua Cheng said, and before Xie Lian could protest, he supplemented, “Just in case, Gege. I was so worried the last time you went off on your own and didn’t return.”

Xie Lian conceded at that.

~.~.~.~

When the unlikely duo arrived, half the village was already thrashed. Looks like they made the right call to come, Xie Lian mused. The villagers long have fled, their life preservation skills still going strong. The deserted village stood desolately, the uncanny silence occasionally broken by someone in the distance cursing and bashing things up. Following the trail of debris, the good news was that they found the perpetrator quickly. The bad news was that the perpetrator didn’t looked like he was going to stop anytime soon.

The supposed insane cultivator appeared really strange indeed. A youthful young man in his mid twenties, his beautiful appearance marred by an ugly frown and the curses spewing out from his lips. He had a large built, well-toned muscles clothed in black and red. In his hands was a humongous red and black sword, releasing out a menacing aura, seemingly aligned with the mood of its wielder. Matching his colour scheme, a strange red hue gleamed on his forehead.

For a moment, Xie Lian thought that he looked like a ruler from hell, out to claim souls for his kingdom of death. A minute shudder ran up his spine at that.

“Gege, be careful. His aura doesn’t feel normal.”

“En.”

The male by now had noticed the duo approaching him. His eyes darkened even further and if it was even possible, the oppressing atmosphere grew even heavier. “You’re not him,” The male’s crestfallen voice resounded. “Go away.”

“Fellow cultivator, may I enquire as to why you are doing this? Perhaps we can be of help,” Xie Lian was undeterred by the cold reception, and attempted to resolve things peacefully.

“I’ve already asked everyone here and they all didn’t know. Pathetic! How could you possibly help?” The man huffed condescendingly. Seeing that they didn’t back down, he snapped, “Very well, if you insist. Tell me where Cang Qiong Sect is.”

“Cang Qiong? That doesn’t sound familiar. San Lang?” Xie Lian murmured under his breath, prompting the male standing stoically beside him.

Hua Cheng appraised the other individual, and he replied in an even tone, “Cang Qiong Sect was one of the great four sects millennia ago. It doesn’t exist now.” Despite the casual tone Hua Cheng had used, Xie Lian could tell that he was rather tense, as if preparing for an incoming fight.

Upon hearing Hua Cheng’s words, the man’s face crumpled into disbelief, and perhaps a touch of despair. “You’re lying! They wouldn’t have let it happened. Shizun and him would have protected it. They would have… They...” It sounded suspiciously like denial to Xie Lian. Suddenly snarling, the male lunged forward and swung his huge sword at them. Hua Cheng immediately parried with E-Ming and fought back. The scarlet-clad ghost raised an unimpressed eyebrow at the sudden assault, which further angered the other person. Both parties exuded hostility, glaring at each other as their swords clanged.

The male’s attacks were getting increasingly more aggressive, as if he could physically beat away the words that Hua Cheng had spoken. Malice shone from his eyes and the marking on his forehead glowed blood red. Slowly, Hua Cheng was getting pushed back. Noticing this, Xie Lian jumped in to help out, and the three combatants exchanged a flurry of blows, further demolishing the area.

“Ku… you’re not bad. But two versus one, isn’t it unfair?” The unknown person barred his teeth in a mockery of a smile.

“Mah mah… you’re pretty good yourself.” Hua Cheng gritted his teeth, as he summoned his silver butterflies to encase the other person. The swarm of butterflies flew and flitted through the air, then like a vengeful hurricane, they all surged down as one in a coordinated attack. Though it was proved to be futile instantaneously, as the figure easily shattered every single one of them like glass.

The ghost’s only eye widened in brief surprise, for he had never encountered anyone who could easily smash through his butterflies- even Jun Wu had a hard time with them. That moment of distraction was his mistake, as his opponent capitalised on it to kick him square in the chest, sending him crashing into a nearby house. Alarmed at how the situation was degrading fast, Hua Cheng told Xie Lian in their private communications array, “Gege! Back up! Call for reinforcements!”

Xie Lian complied immediately. In a panic, he opened every communication arrays that he had and blasted into them. “An unknown formidable cultivator is rampaging at the village ten miles north from Ghost City! Any assistance would be much needed!”

Using Ruo Ye to snake around the figure to distract him, Xie Lian used the few moments to contact a certain someone, “Ling Wen! Can you help to identify this person and perhaps any possible weakness?”

A groan echoed in the array and a bone-tired voice complained to him, “Your Highness… more work?... Give me a description of him at least. I’m stuck in my temple still with all the work you’ve thrown at me.”

Slightly abashed, Xie Lian gave an embarrassed laugh. He quickly provided her with a brief description of the person, “He carries a blood red sword which gives off an extremely dark aura, and his forehead has some sort of red curved symbol. He was also demanding to find someone from the Cang Qiong Sect.”

“Why do you always give me the hard jobs? I’ll start searching through the scrolls. Shi Wudu and Pei Ming will be reaching your area in a while, so hold on until then. I don’t want to deal with more paperwork if you decide to kick the bucket.”

On that cheery note, Ling Wen left the array and the conversation was closed. By now, both Hua Cheng and the rogue cultivator had recovered. The three commenced fighting once more. Not before long, a familiar sword sliced through the air and would have stabbed through the other person's chest if not for him jumping back swiftly in time.

“General Pei! Lord Water Master!” Xie Lian spotted the two in the distance and sighed in relief. The two nodded in acknowledgement at them and joined in the fray.

While Pei Ming joined them for close combat, Shi Wudu assisted from afar. The Water Tyrant may not have recovered his original powers, but his water attacks were still a force to be reckoned with. Attacking with spiritual blasts when he saw an opening, and defending his allies when their defenses broke down. The Water God was a helpful presence in this battle.

Surprisingly even with four against him, the rogue cultivator merely laughed, as if he was having fun. He was also not taking much damage. Expertly, the male dodged and blocked all of their attacks, a showing of his phenomenal footwork. His sneering face openly scorned them all, which infuriated Pei Ming to attack with more force. In contrast, their group of four was slowly getting pushed back by the male’s ruthless attacks, getting more and more wounded too.

After Xie Lian was hit in the chest by a palm strike, he staggered back and winced in pain. Hua Cheng saw this and immediately swung E-Ming down in an downward arc venomously. Before the male could dodge, Shi Wudu conjured some water chains to immobilise him. With his movements restricted, Hua Cheng’s vicious attack landed cleanly on the male’s chest. Blood splattered.

“You! Hiding behind and sending sneak attacks! Despicable!” A savage growl emitted from the man’s throat and he flashed in front of the Water Master at an inhumane speed. He heaved his sword up and clearly intend to drive it cleanly through the surprised Water Master.

“Look out! Lord Water Master!” Xie Lian cried out in warning.

But it was too late for anyone to do anything. None of them could rival the speed their opponent was moving at. They could only watch on in horror as the figure slowly plunge his sword down, inching closer and closer to the unguarded chest of the Water Master.

Clang!

Before the attack could connect, an unfamiliar sword flew out from nowhere to intercept the opponent’s sword. The resulting reverberation echoed uncomfortably loud in the area, before the sword continued to move to attack the offender. It was as if the blade had a will of its own, and hated the other person immensely. The figure immediately darted back away from the danger, just as the sword missed mere inches from his throat and stabbed uselessly in the ground in front of Shi Wudu. The sword gleamed in the sunlight, looking rather innocuous as if it did not almost sliced off someone’s head mere moments ago. Inscribed on the sword were the characters ‘Cheng Luan’.

All combatants paused and turned to look in the direction where the sword came from. A male, presumably the user of the sword, stood afar. His straight obsidian hair was tied up neatly in a high ponytail. A white and pale green cultivator outfit donned his figure and he was approaching the battle scene rapidly with his superb show of qinggong. As he got closer, a dreadful scowl was seen on the stranger’s face. Shi Wudu’s mysterious saviour then hollered at their opponent.

“You! You’re still alive? What do you think you’re doing?!”

~.~.~.~

“An unknown cultivator is rampaging at the village ten miles north from Ghost City! Any assistance would be much needed!”

Shi Qingxuan winced at the sudden loud volume from his communication array. Checking on it, he realised it was the one Xie Lian constructed in the Wind and Water Master Temple during the Venerable fiasco. It felt like a lifetime ago, but in reality it only happened a few months back. Xie Lian must have forgotten to remove the array after the whole incident, especially since Shi Qingxuan had blocked communications during the first month of his disappearance.

“Ling Wen! Can you help to identify this formidable cultivator and perhaps any possible weakness?”

Snapping his fan open and lightly fanning himself, Shi Qingxuan’s lips quirked up amusedly. From his end, it sounded like a one-sided conversation. Ling Wen must be talking to His Highness in their private array, while Xie Lian replied in the shared one. This protagonist really has a penchant for mixing up his communication arrays.

“He carries a blood red sword which gives off an extremely dark aura, and his forehead has some sort of red curved symbol.”

“...”

Oh damn, that sounds really familiar.

It should be a coincidence right? How many people are there in this world that have a terrifying red sword and a red mark on their forehead. Probably too many to count on both hands!

“He was also demanding to find someone from the Cang Qiong Sect.”

Shi Qingxuan almost fell off the comfortable chair he was roosting at, jerking harshly at the revelation. His hopes were instantaneously dashed.

Fuuuckkkk!

Bemoaning his horrible luck, his arm came up to cover his face as he sighed wearily. He glanced at his husband sitting to the left of him, whose usual deadpan face was now pinched in irritation. Shi Qingxuan wasn’t sure if he was irked at the fact that their afternoon time was cut short, or that his wayward counterpart had somehow managed to show up again.

Jumping to his feet, Shi Qingxuan summoned Xiu Ya into his hands with a wave. He then bent down to press a chaste kiss on his husband’s forehead, hoping to smooth out the crinkles. “Now now, don’t be upset. Let’s go take a look, shall we?”

He Xuan got up rather reluctantly at Shi Qingxuan’s coaxing, strapping Zheng Yang to his back. Unexpectedly, the ghost suddenly leaned forward and pressed their mouths together. His teeth nibbled slightly on Shi Qingxuan’s lips, tongue flicking out to wet their lips for a smoother kiss. The slide of their lips together was intoxicating and the desire to deepen the kiss grew. The strong grip on his waist, guiding their lower bodies together did not help alleviate his arousal at all. A flutter of interest rose in Shi Qingxuan, and something south twitched slightly. He quickly caught himself and pushed his husband off.

Shameless! Your counterpart’s causing trouble now and you’re still in the mood?! After two lives you still didn’t learn any decorum??

An unapologetic smirk graced the ghost’s face when he noticed the glowing red face of Shi Qingxuan and his uneven breathing. That earned him a whack on the head by the fearsome Wind Master fan. After that little sidetrack, Shi Qingxuan contacted Shang Qinghua via a communication array, updating him on the newest development and requesting him to meet them at the rendezvous point.

~.~.~.~

The two flew over on their swords as quickly as they could, stopping to land on a nearby rooftop a mile away from the battle. The Distance Shortening Array was not working for some unknown reason- perhaps it was due to the demonic sword’s disruptive aura.

The pure destruction of the village was appalling to witness. There was a huge crater in the center of the battle, and all the houses surrounding the area were blown flat. Slash marks and potholes littered the battlefield. In fact, the house they landed on did not escape intact as well, with parts of it breaking down, destabilising the entire structure. It was hard to imagine that just a day ago, this place was a functional village, home to hundreds of people. Balancing nimbly, they watched the proceedings from afar. It was wiser to assess the situation discreetly first rather than jumping into the fray immediately, especially since Shang Qinghua and Mobei-Jun have not arrived and no one below looked like they were on the verge of dying.

Even though Shi Qingxuan called it a mass battle, in reality, it looked as if there were only two main combatants, and the rest were acting as support. Not that he could blame them, considering who their opponent was. His eyes screened past a familiar black and red figure, confirming his suspicions much to his woe. In the chaos of battle, he spotted a familiar green and did not placed much emphasis on it, not finding the recognisable and oh so familiar uniform out of place. He took note of the combatants and gauged their injuries. His heart clenched a little when he saw his brother in the fray. Spotting so many figures that he recognised, he only took a double take when a familiar voice called out a familiar name.

“Liu Qingge…Where is he! Why have you come instead? Where’s Shizun?”

Liu Qingge? Bai Zhan Peak Lord? Huh huh?!

Squinting at the green figure, Shi Qingxuan sized the person up a second time. With daunting horror, he realised that it was indeed Liu Shidi. He could feel an incoming headache at the clusterfuck he knew was about to befall him. Things were starting to get really complicated, and all he wanted to do now was to roll over on his bed and fall asleep. First Luo Bingge, then now a Liu Qingge! Maybe when he wake up, it’ll be all a nightmare.

“Luo Binghe! Aren’t you taking things too far! Your Shizun and you pretended to have died all those years back didn’t you?! It should me asking you where Shen Qingqiu is!” A brash voice which Shi Qingxuan recognised from long, long ago bellowed out.

At that, a strangled keening sound was punched out of Shi Qingxuan’s chest, as he buried his face into his hands. He wailed internally, repenting with all his heart that he didn’t tell anyone else about Bingge all those years back. Now, that has come back to bite him in the ass, with Liu Qingge thinking that Bingge was Bingmei! He Xuan seemed to know what he was thinking about, and patted his shoulder consolingly.

Now, Shen Yuan was a man with many secrets. And he would never ever divulge them willingly. He preferred to withhold them till the very last moment, until they’re going to blow up in his face. Or on the rare occasion if he gets guilt-tripped severely. Or if it gets revealed anti-climatically by an unrepentant author first. This, right now, was an exemplary instance of the first account.

“What are you talking about?! Stop speaking in riddles and tell me where Shen Qingqiu is!” Luo Bingge roared, brandishing Xin Mo at Liu Qingge. The two hot-headed men, both strangers to reason and logic, jumped straight back into their fighting. It reminded Shi Qingxuan of a dog fight, each trying to prove their dominant male alpha position to the other. The other combatants followed suit, slowly chipping away at Luo Binghe’s defenses.

Honestly, Shi Qingxuan knew how this was going to end. He could see the tell-tale signs of his disciple’s cunning smirk, and his condescending gaze an indication of the trap he had laid for everyone. Logically, Luo Binghe was the overpowered blackened protagonist of Proud Immortal Demonic Way. There was no way the rest could have a chance of defeating him. Xie Lian may be the protagonist of Heaven Official’s Blessings, but that novel had a much more balanced power hierarchy than the other novel! Blame the authors for that! Luo Binghe was merely just playing with them, drawing out the fun that he was having.

For a moment, Shi Qingxuan was rather worried for everyone below. Does the main character still get plot armour after the series has ended? Doubtful. Just look at his husband beside him; exhibit one. If the main character was not exempt from the consequences of Luo Bingge’s rampage, needless to say about the other characters! Especially his poor brother who by all rights should have been dead by now.

Sure enough, it was just as Shi Qingxuan predicted. Luo Bingge pretended to stumble back from an attack from Cheng Luan, and as the rest rushed up to follow up on the attack, he unleashed a blast from Xin Mo, pushing back all the close combatants within the radius violently. He would have followed up with a devastating blow to the combatants, if not for an unexpected intervention.

Half a dozen of bamboo leaves whistled deadly in the wind and would have sliced into Bingge, if not for the half demon breaking his momentum to deflect the attacks. Where did Shi Qingxuan get the bamboo leaves you ask? Well he saw a few bamboos on the way and plucked them. Why pluck them you ask? It’s called style! Style!

Seeing the signature move of the Qing Jing Peak Lord, Bingge turned around in euphoria. He ignored the mad scramble of the others, taking the chance to retreat a safe distance away. His eyes had a bright doe-like look, sparkling with glee. “Shi-” He stopped short and his sentence fell flat when his eyes landed on an unfamiliar face. Glowering, he growled out, “Who are you?! Why do you have Xiu Ya?! You imposter!”

Serenely side-stepping all the debris and ignoring the gasps of recognition from all around him (especially the soft “Qingxuan” from his brother), he approached at a languid pace. By-passing all the combatants, he stopped a few meters away from Bingge. With as much haughtiness he could muster, he sniped out, “He's calling me an imposter! What do you say?”

“Those who can’t even recognise Shizun should scram!” He Xuan wielded Zheng Yang and stepped out from the opposite side of Bingge, preventing the half-demon from retreating. From Shi Qingxuan’s perspective, he could see both He Xuan and Bingge, as if they were standing side by side. It was one thing to know, and another to see with his eyes; both of them really looked different, despite once being the same person. His heart ached a little for his disciple- being downgraded from a main character to a side character must have hurt lots. He wondered what his disciple was thinking now, when he looked at his past alternate self. Was he disappointed that the world would never favour him again? That he might not ever reach the same heights ever again? He might never even win against such an overpowered character, if not for the hack author on their side.

As if on cue, said hack author and Mobei Jun appeared on the other two sides of Binge, boxing him in entirely. They both hummed out their agreement at the declaration He Xuan made.

Shi Qingxuan procured his bamboo fan from his sleeves and began to fan himself lightly. A strange move in the middle of the battlefield, but it worked its charm, settling down Bingge. This move always did wonders for Shi Qingxuan, giving him back the aura of a lofty immortal. He demurely said, “Luo Binghe, I’m flattered that you think of me so much. To take hundreds and thousands of years to find a way back into our world even though we had destroyed Xin Mo. Such dedication.”

And then he looked over to Shang Qinghua, glaring daggers at him. He snapped out, “And you! You’re late!”

“Have some mercy would you? You suddenly asked me to locate a millennia old seal. It’s a miracle I even found it on the same day and could meet up with you.” Shang Qinghua lamented. He then coughed slightly under his breath, which sounded suspiciously like ‘slave driver’.

“It’s you two! Then you’re really Shen Qingqiu? And you’re not Binghe?” Liu Qingge gaped at them, his bulging eyes swiveled from Shi Qingxuan to Bingge. The Bai Zhan Peak Lord, bless his soul, had finally caught up to what was happening, unlike the others who were still lost at the proceedings and were only silently watching it play out.

Luo Bingge by now had also regained his wits. Using the half-truths thrown out by them, and from his own observations, he easily deduced the truth of the matter. The protagonist’s intelligence was not something to be looked down on. “Shizun! Why won’t you come with me still? I told you before! My counterpart’s weaker than me in all aspects! Look at you now, he couldn’t even protect you! You died!”

“He may be weaker than you, but that just means that you and him are different people. You are you, and he is his person.” Shi Qingxuan’s retort was sharp, aiming to stab straight into Bingge’s metaphorical heart. Staring into Bingge’s eyes, he fearlessly spelt it out for him, despite knowing that Bingge could utterly destroy him in a single move.

“And no one can escape the passage of time. All living beings will one day return to the earth and enter the reincarnation cycle. Including me and even you.”

A howl was ripped from Bingge’s throat at that, and he lunged towards Shi Qingxuan. No doubt wanting to snatch him away. How could he succeed though, in the face of Shen Yuan, who had read the entire book of Luo Bingge’s exploits and knew of every single trick in his repertoire. They were prepared for him and just as his hands were about to reach Shi Qingxuan, a bright blue light appeared on the ground, trapping Bingge in it.

“An array?!” A few surprised mutters gasped out from behind Shi Qingxuan.

Bingge gazed down, and his body became taut with tension, his face lost its colour to a pale white. There was a flicker of recognition in those dark obsidian eyes. Bingge immediately used Xin Mo and attempted to slash his way out.

“Hold it! Don’t let him through,” Shi Qingxuan barked out to the other three who were at the corner points of the sealing array. Turning to Bingge again, he prompted, “Doesn’t this looks familiar to you? Is that why you are so anxious to get out? After all, this was the same exact array that had sealed your father.”

Indeed, this was the seal that had done in Tanglang Jun. When Shi Qingxuan had suspected the identity of the person rampaging, he immediately called for Shang Qinghua to find the sealing array and prepare it. Following the first appearance of Bingge a long time ago, they had already dug out the array’s instructions just in case he ever came back. Who knew that they would need it now? Looks like their efforts paid off, as the four stood around Bingge in all directions, boxing him in. The initial array used on TangLang Jun required hundreds of cultivators to work, but it was different now as the quartet had far surpassed the power levels of mortal cultivators. Four of them were enough to hold the fort.

Seeing that Xin Mo’s attack did not work, Bingge’s expression crumpled. He realised that he was truly trapped. All physical and spiritual blows to forcefully break out of the array were ineffective and futile. However, he definitely live up to his title as a blackened protagonist, being able to adapt swiftly and change tactics. Putting on a pitiful expression, Bingge cried out in a distressed tone, “Shizun… Am I really that detestable? Would you really rather see me gone?”

Ughhh!! He really was weak against that face and those tears. Shi Qingxuan averted his eyes, praying to the heavens for this seal to quickly do its work.

“Answer me, Shen Qingqiu!” Xin Mo clattered to the floor noisily and Bingge fell to his knees. A fresh set of tears came dripping down the oh-so-familiar face and loud sniffles reverberated in the battlefield. The protagonist of The Proud Immortal Demonic Way cried loudly and messily, calling out for Shen Qingqiu in between sobs. It truly was a heart-wrenching sight.

It’s fake, it’s fake, it’s fake! Shi Qingxuan repeated that like a mantra. He ignored how his heart went ping at the sight of his bawling disciple. Although something must have shone through on his face, as Shang Qinghua shook his head and He Xuan gave a resigned sigh.

“Shizun… Do what you will, this disciple will follow,” He Xuan said, ignoring the teary and baleful glare thrown his way by his ex-counterpart.

“You may have a sharp tongue, but also a really soft heart,” Shang Qinghua grumbled out, though without any real heat behind it. He even waved a hand leisurely at Shi Qingxuan, gesturing at him to hurry up and make a choice.

Shi Qingxuan exhaled out, grateful at how well his husband and friend can read him. Truly, Shi Qingxuan felt that Bingge did not deserve this. It was too cruel. Bingge may have done some questionable things in life, such as the mutilation of his Shizun, and the annihilation of Cang Qiong Sect. But were those not the dictations of a poor and wretched author? Did Bingge had any choice in it? He was also an unfortunate victim of circumstances, having suffered his entire life, having his destiny shaped out in such a tragic manner. Given the right opportunity, given the right push, this blackened lotus could also have become the same man as his husband.

How could Shi Qingxuan then have the heart to seal him away mercilessly?

At the doleful cries of his disciple’s counterpart, his heart trembled. He didn’t have a heart cold enough to personally seal away the original goods. It would feel like him pushing Binghe down into the Endless Abyss once more. Unacceptable. Coming to a decision, Shi Qingxuan finally huffed out, “Swear it on your adopted mother’s soul. If we release you, you won’t harm the denizens of this world.” As an afterthought, he added on, “nor try to abduct me and get me into your bed.”

A strangled wheeze came from his elder brother’s direction. Oops.

Seeing no other way other, the half demon regally dipped his head once in acknowledgement. As Bingge sullenly agreed to their terms, a stray thought hit Shi Qingxuan. He muttered out, “You… you really loved Shen Qingqiu, didn’t you?” Why else would Bingge still be so obsessed about him? Taking so many years just to find a way to break through into their world when he has close to a thousand harem girls! Who knew what number the harem was at now after so many years! If he truly only hated the man, Bingge would have never spent so much effort to do this. Shen Yuan would merely be a footnote in all the strange things Luo Bingge has experienced and seen. A strange story to be told to Bingge’s wives.

And that wasn’t the case. Case in point, his presence right here. It was a strong indication of the feelings Bingge had for his Shizun. His initial idolisation and love for the man may have been warped and twisted with hatred, after all the suffering he went through under the man’s hands, but underlying all these, perhaps some of it still remained. The innocent love that he once held for the untouchable and proud immortal of Qing Jing Peak.

Bingge must have heard his question, with his sharp hearing as a half-demon, but he opted not to reply, merely turning his head away and glaring at He Xuan and Mobei Jun who had the array on standby, just in case the shrewd demon decided to renege on the agreement and attack them.

At this juncture, Shang Qinghua took out something from his sleeves. The ex-author cautiously stepped towards his “son” to hand him the artefact. “I actually expected your Shizun here to not be able to pull through with sealing you away. This artifact has the ability to rewind time for you. With your foreknowledge, you can redo everything with your Shizun back in your world.”

Luo Bingge gingerly took the artifact from his creator, gazing at it with badly concealed hopeful eyes. It was really painful to watch. Shang Qinghua continued speaking, “I can’t guarantee that your Shizun would end up like the Shen Qingqiu of this world, since they are after all different people. But you should know this. Shen Qingqiu is not the man you believe him to be. Liu Qingge’s death in the spiritual cave was not caused by him as well. He was also rather justified in his actions regarding Qiu Haitang’s case.”

“Your Shizun’s rather like you, shaped to be who he was by what had happened to him in his youth. Given the right push, he can be redeemed.” Shang Qinghua took a step back. “Don’t ever forget this, Luo Binghe.”

Bingge stood up on shaky feet, giving a short courtesy bow, much to the shock of everyone there. “This disciple understands, Shang Shishu.”

With that, the intimidating half-demon disappeared, having activated the artefact. Shi Qingxuan sincerely hoped with all his heart that things would work out for him and the original Shen Qingqiu. Giving Shang Qinghua a glance, he rolled his eyes. “You claim that you knew I wouldn’t be able to seal him. But you yourself didn’t have the heart to do it as well! Why else would you prepare such a second chance for him?” Changing to English, he teasingly continued, “Mister author.”

Shang Qinghua reddened and stalked off to Mobei-Jun, giving an indignant huff at that.

Shen Yuan smirked slightly, crowing smugly at the ex-author’s retreating back, “Those lines at the end were rehearsed right? HAHAHAH!”

Despite all his mocking, Shen Yuan was secretly pleased, knowing that this would give Airplane-bro the closure he needed.

As an after note, he asked his fellow transmigrator, “That artefact will work right? It won’t decimate him atom by atom or scatter his ashes throughout the multiverses?”

Shen Yuan received a cordial middle finger for his legitimate concerns. Rude.

“You! You died!”

“Liu Shidi, give it a rest. Everyone dies in the end anyway. It’s not like it’s the first time I died.” And wasn’t that the truth.

Liu Qingge sputtered incoherently at that. Pride swelled in Shen Yuan’s chest. Qing Jing Peak was always superior in their words than Bai Zhan Peak. He was glad to report that that has not changed even now.

“But you came back?! Not everyone does that!” Liu Qingge jabbed accusingly at his chest.

“This wouldn’t be the first time as well. But surely even you would have heard of reincarnation, yes?” Taking the chance to change the topic, Shi Qingxuan inquired the Bai Zan Peak Lord, “How’s everyone? Or is it just you now, Liu Shidi?”

Said person crossed his arms and sniffed haughtily, “Of course there’s still more of us left. Have a little faith in our sect. Ning Yingying sends her greetings by the way.”

Shi Qingxuan brightened up when he heard that one of his top disciples was alive and well. “Come and pick us up tomorrow at Shang Shidi’s house. It’ll be good to see everyone again.”

Grumbling, Liu Qingge complained, “We’re way older than you now. Why are you still calling us Shidi?”

An imperious eyebrow was raised at that. Shi Qingxuan beckoned He Xuan, who was hovering at the edge, to come closer. “Tell your Shishu why I’m still considered his senior in rank.”

A shit-eating grin split He Xuan’s face, smugness rolled off him in waves as he stalked in to drape an arm around Shi Qingxuan. “For starters Shishu, you needed our help to contain my counterpart.”

A vein pulsed on Liu Qingge’s forehead, and the gnashing of teeth was loud enough for Shi Qingxuan to hear. “Wipe that scornful look off your face, demon! Why are you still so irksome even after death?!”

Mid-chortle, Shi Qingxuan finally noticed the audience around them. Shrugging He Xuan’s arm off, he sidled to his brother’s side. “Brother… I can explain...” Under his brother’s scrutiny, he felt like a child once more, having caught red-handed with his hand in the cookie jar. He fidgeted anxiously, aware of the awkward conversation that was to come. The rest of the crew had dispersed, citing various reason, but all wanting to give the siblings the privacy for their much needed talk.

Shi Wudu was by no means a fool. His sharp mind could definitely piece together the broken truths he picked up on along the way. By now, Shi Qingxuan guessed that his brother would have realised something was off about him. His brother’s calm reaction though, was something that he did not expect.

“Sigh... somehow even now you still manage to surprise me. Are you happy?” His elder brother questioned softly.

“Eh?” Wide eyes looked up at his brother. Once the question registered in his brain, Shi Qingxuan glanced back at the still bickering duo. One had Cheng Luan in his hand, and the other was palming Zheng Yang’s hilt. Both looking as if they were going to break out into a fight. The others did nothing to stop them, some (Pei Ming and Hua Cheng) were even egging them on. His heart fluttered lightly at that scene. A tender smile graced his face, “En.”

A hand came up to ruffle his hair, an action that his brother used to do when they were both young. Sighing with melancholy, his brother said, “That’s enough for me. My younger brother’s all grown up now.”

“Go along with your friends, but don’t forget to drop by on this elder brother once in a while.” The implicit significance of the words was crystal clear to Shi Qingxuan. No matter what happens, you forever be my little brother still.

A brilliant and dazzling grin broke out.

“En.”

~.~.~.~

In the curtains of the night and the security of their home, two reincarnators laid on their bed. Correction, Shi Qingxuan laid on the bed while He Xuan’s body was bent over his, blocking his view of the ceiling.

“Husband…” A full body shiver ran through He Xuan at that breathless whisper, and Shi Qingxuan found delight at how a single word from him could utterly derail his husband. His hand came up to tangle in the other’s hair, using it to guide the other’s head forward to lock their lips together; a continuation of their kiss from this morning. Their tongues clashed and intertwined, the heat pooling in them becoming more and more unbearable.

Their clothes were strewn haphazardly around the room, having been thrown off in a haste. They may come to regret it tomorrow, when they have to dress appropriately to meet the rest. But for now, neither one of them cared.

He Xuan was already fully sheathed in Shi Qingxuan, hands under his knees- both to spread the Wind God’s legs and also to balance himself. Breaking their kiss, the ghost blew a puff of air on his right earlobe, and said in a hushed tone, “Does it feel good, husband?”

A full blown shudder ran through Shi Qingxuan’s body, and he flung his arm up to cover his face. Shameless! He Xuan’s hips rocked harshly into him at that, most likely unhappy that he wasn’t able to admire his husband’s face. “Shizun, look at me. Don’t hide.”

“Ah... ahh,” Shi Qingxuan moaned pitifully, his own body moving without his volition, bucking back into the thrusts and seeking for more pleasure. Everything felt so intense, and his nerves were hypersensitive to every fleeting touch from his husband. Every single butterfly touch elicited a slight shiver from him, and a barely restrained whimper would leave his mouth when the hands grazed a particularly sensitive spot. Their perspiration acted as a lubricant, allowing their bodies to slide together easily without much resistance. Heat accumulated and pooled under his navel, as his hard rod weeped generously, bouncing along with his jerky movements.

He craned his neck and peered coyly out from above his arm at his husband, eyelashes fluttering as he blinked rapidly. His husband’s face was scrunched up with pleasure, teeth biting at his lips, perhaps subconsciously. Their eyes interlocked and their gaze spoke of their love and affection for each other. The sight of his debauched husband made his breath hitch and a new wave of heat swallowed him under. In his hazy and almost delirious state, his head fell back with a thunk and his eyes squeezed shut. A low groan was let out by him. Shi Qingxuan wondered what his husband saw at that moment, for the passion in He Xuan’s eyes ignited brighter and the ghost bent down to interlace their fingers.

“Shizun, why won’t you look at me?” His baritone voice asked huskily. His husband thrusted in shallowly for a few times, before asking another question. “Or is it because you prefer this face better?”

At a subtle shift in the air, and the sudden tightness at his key area, Shi Qingxuan blearily opened his eyes. A high pitched whine escaped his throat. His body convulsed and trembled, almost becoming undone right there and then. Luo Binghe’s face was looking down at him. Binghe’s original face peered at him, patented with his starry eyes and innocent sheep-like facial expression. The face of a beautiful, peerless and charismatic harem master and the main protagonist of The Proud Immortal Demonic Way. The face of his husband that he was so used to.

Fuck! That’s not fair! Why are you so underhanded?!

Thinking vindictively that two can play this game, Shi Qingxuan called for his powers. He felt his own features melt away and his body took on the appearance of Shen Qingqiu. Clearing his throat deliberately, Shen Qingqiu reached out his hand to caress the cheeks of his disciple and chided him in a disapproving tone which he knew his husband secretly loved, “Binghe.”

Said person doubled over and before Shen Qingqiu could register it, Luo Binghe started pounding into him without any restrain. All his disciple’s self-control was thrown into the wind, as if the visage of his Shizun had pushed him over the edge.

“Ngnhh! Ahh, ah, ah- Binghe!” The brutal pace robbed him of his coherence, and the rational part of his brain melted to goo. All of Shen Qingqiu’s actions now were of a primal, basic nature, mere reactions to the pleasure he was being subjected to. Moans and pleas spilled from his lips. A contradiction of commands to go faster and slower lingered in the air.

The pleasure intensified and swelled, escalating higher and higher for the two. Shen Qingqiu’s hand snaked down, intending to pump himself to completion, but it was swatted away by his husband. Instead, a firm and familiar grip held his erection and moved at a frenzied pace as well. With his front also being taken care of, and coupled with the stimulation at his chrysanthemum, he felt himself approaching his end fast. At a particularly hard strike to his abused prostate, Shen Qingqiu came with an utterly loud and wanton moan. Binghe came tumbling down right after him, muffling his cry in Shen Qingqiu’s hair.

Binghe flopped to the side of Shen Qingqiu ceremoniously, not crushing him with his weight. Shen Qingqiu was then gathered into the arms of his disciple, as the two tried to recover their breathing and heart rate to a normal level.

Wriggling closer, Shen Qingqiu sighed contentedly. He inhaled the musky scent of his husband, and the familiar smell reminded him of many things. The remnants of a past long gone. The bamboo grove of a serene peak. Of lotuses and warm tea. The fiery brimstone of the Endless Abyss. Of treachery and anguish. The rolling waters of Black Water Lair. Of despair and betrayal.

It also evoked a sense of fondness and attachment. And it also reminded him of love. And a future together.

But most importantly, it reminded him of home.

Omake~

“Shizun! Ah-Luo! Over here!”

“Ning Yingying, it’s good to see you.”

“Shijie, it has been a long time.”

“I’m so happy to hear that you two are still around! Shizun, you’re the Wind Master, right?”

“En.”

“I saw you a while back actually! At the Imperial Capital, together with the Earth Master! Though you were a … female?”

“....”

“....”

“Ning Yingying.”

“E- eh? Yes, Shizun?”

“Don’t ever mentioned that ever again. Especially in front of the others.”

“... yes Shizun. This disciple understands. But- I was with MingFan… He may or may not have mentioned something to the others…”

!!!

Notes:

Andd that’s a wrap guys! I’m so glad to have all of you sticking with me, helping me to build this fusion of HOB and SVSS. It’s been a great ride. Did you catch Bingge's identity at the very first part of the chapter? Hahhahah

I know that some parts were a bit rushed, so I’ll most likely go over to edit everything soon. If you think that some scenes can be improved in this entire fic (too rushed, feelings too exaggerated, characters acting OOC) please leave your feedback in the comments and I’ll look over it. Perhaps ya’ll will spot something new if you reread this fic next time :)

The survival of Cang Qiong Sect was purposely left open-ended, because honestly I did not intend for any of them to appear in this fic. But a lot of people were clamoring for SVSS characters (esp LQG! I sound like Airplane-bro here hahaha) so there~ the rest will be up to reader’s imagination :>

For now I have nothing else planned, but if inspiration strikes me in the future, do expect a continuation to this verse. Most likely it’ll be oneshots though.

Until the next time then, everyone!
