Chapter Text
“Dad?” Darcy pocketed her key and used her foot to push the door closed. “Are you here?”
“In the kitchen, sweetheart,” came the answer in her father’s gruff voice.
Darcy followed his voice and found him with a beer in hand. Sarge, a big and scowly Neapolitan Mastiff, was by her father’s feet.
“Oh, thanks, dad.” Darcy put down the pie she’d been carrying and took the bottle from his hand.
Barney Ross -that Barney Ross -scoffed as the cheek. “Kids these days. No respect.”
She dropped a kiss to his cheek. “Oh my old geezer. How are you?”
“Fine.”
Darcy gave him a look. “Are you hurt?”
Barney rolled his eyes. “No.”
Darcy stared him down, until Barney sighed. “It’s just the ribs. But they aren’t broken.”
“I swear to god, dad! You aren’t thirty anymore.” She put her hands on her waist. “You might think you’re ‘expendable’, but to me you aren’t.”
Barney pointed a finger at her. “That’s a low blow.”
“I learned with the best.” She winked at him. “Let’s cook?”
“Before that…” He said when she made to turn to the fridge. “Let’s talk about the boyfriend.”
Darcy groaned. “Dad, not this again.”
“I want to meet him.” Barney insisted.
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because I don’t subscribe to that macho bullshit of trying to intimidate my boyfriend.” She told him quite directly. “I’m still upset over what you did to Ian.”
Barney grumbled something and looked down. Darcy had been really upset when she brought the pasty British boy around and he and the boys just happened to be cleaning their guns. And discussing all the ways to get rid of a body.
Fine, they might have interrogated him a bit.
Celia, Darcy’s mother, had called Barney, extremely upset. Darcy had been very upset too, she spent weeks without talking to him. He had tried to tell her this was how things were done in his time, but she had liked this explanation even less.
Barney knew that Darcy was a smart woman, and he trusted her, but… He didn’t like the idea of her dating just anyone. He felt it was his duty as her father to make sure she was safe.
“I’ll behave.” He promised. “No guns, no dead bodies. Just a beer with us.”
“Us? I’m not bringing him to meet all of you.”
“You don’t think he can handle it?”
Darcy glared at him.
“Dar.” Barney tried again. “I know I can be difficult. I’m old and stubborn, but I love you and I want to be a part of your life.”
Darcy sighed. “Talk about low blows.” She huffed.
“Come on.” Barney cajoled. “We’ll be on our best behavior. You said I was going to like this one.”
Darcy groaned. “You’re going to like him a lot. Fine! But if I see one gun, I’ll spend every Christmas with mom for the rest of my life!”
“Deal.”
Chapter Text
Brock Rumlow’s life had changed a lot in these last years.
Now that HYDRA was gone and his assignment as a triple agent was done, he felt ready to really start living. He wanted to run after the things he’d left behind when Fury asked him to go undercover.
He was ready to take less risks when it came to missions. He was ready to settle down, have the family he’d always wanted to. When he was working undercover, he’d made the choice of avoiding those things, worried that Pierce would use anyone in his life as leverage.
He’d even cut contact with his family for a while.
Now he wanted it all.
And he thought he found the perfect person to have these things with: Darcy Lewis.
Darcy was an amazing woman. They’d first met in London, during the Dark Elves’ mess. He was instantly charmed by her wit, her smiles and her cheek. But it wasn’t the right time, and he’d had to let it go.
Meeting her again after all of that had seemed like a sign.
He didn’t want to pressure her or anything. Darcy was much younger than he was -his men wouldn’t stop making fun of him because of that -and she had different plans.
Brock wasn’t in a hurry. He loved her, and he wanted to build something with her when they were both ready for it.
“Rumlow.” He spoke as he answered the phone.
“Brock.” Jack’s voice on the other side was serios. “You’re not the only senior citizen Darcy’s been seeing.”
***
Darcy was about to enter SHIELD’s building when a familiar voice called her. “Hey, princess!”
She turned immediately, a smile splitting her face. “Lee!” She hugged the man. “What are you doing here?”
“I came to see you.” He told her directly. “Your father is worried about your new guy. He keeps saying something about Christmas, and I don’t think he’s talking about me.”
Darcy snorted and explained to Lee the conversation she had with her dad. The man winced in sympathy.
“Come on, princess.” Lee cajoled. “You know he loves you.”
“That’s not the problem, Lee.” Darcy sighed. “I know he does, and I love him too. But I don’t like this bullshit of threatening my boyfriends, treating me like this princess to be passed only to a man he approves of.”
“Yeah…” Lee drawled, because that was probably what Barney thought it should happen.
He was quite old, so it wasn’t that shocking Barney thought like that. However, Darcy was young and had a different mind. Honestly, Lee’s ideas were closer to Barney’s, but Darcy probably didn’t want to hear that.
“I’ll tell you what.” He chose to say instead. “I’ll talk to the guys, help to keep an eye on your dad.”
Darcy smiled at him. “You’re a saint, Lee.” She kissed his cheek.
“Anything for my favorite girl.”
Chapter Text
Brock appreciated the loyalty, but he didn’t like the fact that Jack was doubting Darcy’s faithfulness.
Brock wasn’t a particularly jealous kind of guy, mostly because he thought he was a pretty awesome boyfriend in general. It might sound a bit arrogant of him, but he knew his strengths.
He didn’t like the fact that Jack was keeping an eye on Darcy and reporting on her immediately. He was going to kick his friend’s ass and make him apologize to Darcy.
He did understand where the feeling came from; for a long time, Jack and Brock only had each other. They watched each other’s back, because there was no one else to turn to. Fury had been quite clear: if they got caught, they were on their own.
Jack was a brother to Brock, but the man was way too tense.
“Hi, babe.”
“Darcy.” He smiled at her, then pulled her closer as soon as she was within reach. “What’s that?”
“Oh.” She looked at the bag in her hand. “I was going to bribe you with food, then I remembered you don’t eat like a normal human being. But I was already at the bakery, so I decided I also deserved muffins.”
“And how are you going to bribe me now?” He asked, amused by her.
“Sex on your desk?” She offered, a grin on her lips.
Brock chuckled. “I love where your mind is at, but you do know that this might have been more effective if I didn’t know it was bribery until later right?”
“I knew there was something I was missing.”
“Why do you need to bribe me?”
Darcy sighed. “My father wants to meet you.”
Brock arched an eyebrow at her. “Wow. You sound really excited about it.”
“Don’t get me wrong, I love him and I love you. The thing is…” She scrunched up her nose. “My father is kind of ‘old-school’ and he falls quite annoyingly into the macho stereotype. He’s a great dad and he’s really supportive, but he has this thing about approving of my boyfriends.”
Brock hummed his understanding. “Let me guess: he never does.”
“No, he doesn’t.” She grumbled. “And he’s this military type, so he gets his buddies to come to dinner with us, and they interrogate and try to intimidate whoever I’m going out with. I hated it as a teenager, I hate it even more now.”
“So you aren’t worried he might scare me away.” Brock guessed.
“No.” Darcy made a dismissive gesture with her hand. “Honestly, I think he’s going to like you a lot. What I don’t like it’s that he thinks it’s okay to do this, you know? You can handle yourself, but I don’t like having to let ‘warn’ you.”
“it’s fine, babe. We’ll see how it goes, but I promise I won’t let him scare me.”
Darcy hugged him tighter and pressed her face against his chest for a minute. “Brock?”
“Yeah?”
“We’re still having sex on your desk, right?”
“Oh yes, we are.”

Jack knew he was in deep shit the moment Brock asked to spar.
He should’ve known it’d end like this.
“Brock.” He grumbled as Brock’s chokehold tightened up.
“You’re going to apologise to Darcy.” Brock informed him, coldly calm.
“Fine!” He tapped out.
Brock let him go and watched as Jack took deep breaths in. “I’m serious, Jack. That was wrong. Not only that you were watching her, but that you reported her to me.”
“Isn’t that what friends are supposed to do?” Jack mumbled.
Brock glared at him. “Not like this.” Brock said firmly. “Not because you saw her talking to some man in front of the building; this proves nothing.”
Jack lowered his gaze and sulked for a bit. “I wasn’t following her.” He said after a bit. “I was just coming in and saw her.”
“It doesn’t change a thing.”
Jack sulked harder.
Brock sighed. “Listen, man.” He put a hand on Jack’s shoulder. “I appreciate the loyalty. I know you have my back, the same way I have yours. You’re a friend to me, and I want to keep it that way.”
It was Jack’s turn to sigh. “I’ll apologise to her.” He finally said.
“Good. I trust Darcy, and I love her. I’d like to keep it that way as well.”
Jack just nodded.
***
“What’s going on?” Darcy asked, looking from Brock to Jack.
Jack looked like a toddler who’d just been told off. It was very amusing, since he normally just looked murdery.
“Jack has something to say to you.” Brock informed her.
Now Darcy was intrigued. She had a weird feeling about Jack; she didn’t think he disliked her, but she was also sure he didn’t like her. He wasn’t indifferent either. It was like he was decided to mistrust her.
Brock had told her once that Jack didn’t trust anyone besides him, and they were working on it. He assured her that his friend didn’t dislike her, but he admitted that Jack wasn’t comfortable around new people.
“What is it, Captain Cheekbones?”
Jack narrowed his eyes, then Brock elbowed him. “I want to apologise.”
Darcy arched an eyebrow. “What for?”
“I saw you talking to someone in front of the building and called Brock to let him know.”
“What?” Darcy screeched. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
“You seemed too close.” Jack crossed his arms.
“That man is basically my uncle, you little…” Darcy pressed her lips together and took a deep breath in. “Not cool.”
“I know.” Jack grumbled. “I am sorry.”
“You’re on time out.” She informed him. “No more cookies!”
Jack’s jaw dropped at that. “What?”
“You heard me.” Darcy knew how much he liked her macadamia cookies.
Brock snickered. “That’s what you get.”
Jack left still grumbling about the cookies.
“Good threat, babe.”
“I’m soft.” Darcy sighed. “I’ll probably be incapable of cutting him off for too long.”
Brock pulled her for a hug. “It’s okay. Any amount of time without cookies will be terrible for him.” He kissed the top of her head. “Sorry about him.”
“He’s a jerk.”
“He is. But he’s a jerk that I trust with my life.”
Darcy scoffed. “Why didn’t you ask me?”
“What?”
“The guy.”
“I trust you.” Brock tipped her chin up so he could look into her eyes.
“That easy?” Darcy asked, a bit amused.
“Yeah.”
“I thought you’d be the jealous kind.” Darcy confessed.
“Nah. I’m too old to be jealous.”
Darcy giggled. “It was my honorary uncle Lee. Apparently my father is concerned about meeting you.”
“He’s worried he’s going to get you angry somehow?” Brock guessed.
“Yes. Lee promised to help keep things civilised, but I don’t believe him much.”
“Why not?”
“Well, my father didn’t terrorize my boyfriends alone.” She pointed out.
“Babe, he’d need an army to terrorize me.” Brock assured her.

Thank you so much for all the love this work is receiving.

“Okay, everyone.” Barney looked at the faces around him. All men he trusted with life, brothers in arms, people he’d kill and die for. “This is the plan.”
Everyone held their breath.
“Lee is going to distract Darcy, while Gunner and I…”
“Stop right there.” Lee cut him. “You promised her.”
Barney groaned. “I know, but…”
“But nothing.” Lee glared at him. “You promised, Darcy.”
“He’s right.” Caesar piped up. “Darcy is a good kid, Barney. Give it a rest.”
“This is our Darcy, we’re talking about.” Gunner argued. “We need to be sure she’s dating someone decent.”
“First, she isn’t ‘our Darcy’.” Barney pointed out. “And second, I’m not breaking my promise to her.”
They all gave him looks.
“I’m not!” He insisted. “She said we can’t interrogate him, fine. But there are other ways to get information.”
“She probably won’t like torture as well.” Yin Yang offered.
“We just have to be careful with bruises.” Toll indicated.
They all nodded.
“No!” Lee said firmly. “Last time we didn’t listen to her, she spent weeks without visiting.”
They all lowered their heads.
“Not me.” Galgo called from the back. “I didn’t get involved.”
If looks could kill, he’d be dead already.
Barney turned his eyes to the talkative man. “The only reason you weren’t involved was because you weren’t in the country. Your opinion doesn’t count.”
“Listen, this is simple.” Yin Yang said. “I know this man who sells this drug…”
“No drugs!” Lee protested. “For fuck’s sake, Caeser, help me.”
The tall man raised his hands in surrender. “I give up.”
“I have a suggestion.” Gunner said.
“You?” Lee asked.
“Hey!”
“Calm down.” Barney asked. “What’s the suggestion?”
“We just have to bring in a specialist. A contractor.”
Chapter 6
Notes:
I know many of you were expecting something like Brock being the person they called, but that wasn’t the plan.
I hope you enjoy it anyway.

Chapter Text
Since Luna had joined the Expendables, she’d been involved in some pretty serious fights and seen her fair share of weird shit.
This one took the cake.
“Sorry, what?”
Barney’s gaze was unwavering. “How do I interrogate Darcy’s boyfriend without pissing her off?” He repeated the question, making Luna realise she’d really understood it the first time around.
It was just hard to believe.
Luna had met Darcy shortly after she joined the Expendables. The other woman was Barney’s pride and joy, and it was really funny seeing the usually tough man melt when she called him ‘dad’.
Darcy was also super cool. She was funny, caring and could drink a whole lot of whiskey. Therefore, Luna liked Darcy a lot.
She needed to help her out now.
“Barney, there’s no way you can interrogate this guy without pissing Darcy off.” She told him quite simply.
“Come on, sweet Luna.” Galgo cajoled. “There has to be one way.”
She gave him a hard look. “If you think I’ll help you find a loophole here, you’re out of your mind.”
“Is it against the sisterhood or something?” Toll asked.
Luna sighed. “Darcy has a simple request. Why the hell is it so hard to just respect it?”
Now they all looked embarrassed.
“Listen, drink with the man.” She said. “Get him drunk, he’ll talk. But don’t be pushy, don’t threaten him.”
Barney grumbled his understanding.
“Do you know why Darcy gets upset when you do this?” She decided to ask more directly.
“She says it’s macho bullshit.” He grumbled.
“It is.” She agreed. “But it’s not only that. She feels like you don’t trust her, that you feel she needs your male intelligence to decide what’s best for her.”
“It’s not that!” Barney insisted. “But as a man…” Luna’s look made him stop talking. “I see.”
“I hope you do. Because Darcy must like this guy, and if you insist on interfering, she might never forgive you. And I’m sure that’s not what you want.”
Her words were for Barney, but they all seemed chastised enough.
Good.
But she’d still give Darcy a call. Just to be sure.
Notes:
It was Luna all along... hahahaha
I have plans for Barney and Brock's first meeting, so I didn't want them to have a previous relationship of any type.
Chapter Text
Darcy groaned when her alarm went off. “No work.” She growled, like a little monster.
She heard a chuckle, then the bed dipped beside her. “You always say that.” Brock dropped a kiss to her neck.
“Today I mean it!” She pulled the blanket over her head, blocking the light and Brock’s sunny disposition.
He was a morning person. As in he woke up early -without needing an alarm -went for a run, prepared breakfast, got dressed and waited for her to wake up.
It was exhausting.
“Don’t you have lunch plans with Jane today?” He asked. “That’s a good reason to go to work.”
She pushed the blanket down and glared at him. “It’s not. I can go to lunch from here.”
“Yes, but if you wake up right now, we can have sexy times before work.” He told her conversationally.
Only then did Darcy notice he wasn’t dressed as usual. He was only wearing a towel.
“I need to brush my teeth.” She informed him, since this wasn’t a rom-com.
“I’ll give you two minutes.”
She scrambled out the bed.
***
They had been late for work, obviously, but it was worth it.
However, as they’d left home in a hurry, Darcy only saw the message once she was in her office.
“Call me as soon as you wake up”, sent by Luna at 2 am.
What the hell?
She called, and Luna answered in the second ring. Apparently sleeping late didn’t mean waking up late for Luna.
“Hey, my favorite Expendable.” Darcy teased.
“Please, say that in front of the others.” Luna chuckled. “How are you, Dar?”
“Curious. And you?”
“A bit hungover.” Luna confessed. “Listen: your father and his buddies asked me out for drinks yesterday, because of your boyfriend.”
Darcy groaned. “Are you serious?”
“Yeah. I won’t lie to you: he was trying to find a loophole in whatever you made him promise.”
“I can’t believe this!”
“I told him you wouldn’t forgive him, and I tried to make him understand why you get upset.” Luna confessed. “But I can’t make any promises.”
“It’s fine, Luna. You aren’t a miracle worker. Unfortunately.”
Luna sighed. “Do you want me to get the boys and go as well? Give you moral support?”
“God, no.” Darcy snorted. “Smilee will definitely take my dad’s side, and the others will probably take the chance to create some chaos. We’ll be fine, but thanks.”
“No problem. If you need anything, let me know.”
“Thank you, Luna. You’re the best.”
***
“What if I go and bring Thor?” Jane suggested later, during their lunch.
“That’s actually a good idea.” Darcy perked up. “My dad loves both of you.”
“And I’ll definitely be on your corner.” Jane promised.
“I don’t doubt it, Janey Bear.” Darcy sighed. “But this really pisses me off, you know?”
“It should. He promised you.”
“That’s it.” Darcy grabbed her phone. “If he’s going to play dirty, so will I.”
“What are you going to do?” Jane asked carefully.
“Love you and Thor, but it’s time to bring some heavy reinforcement.” She pressed a contact and waited until the person answered. “Hi, mom.”

“How are you holding up?” Galgo asked as he sat next to Barney.
Barney let out a long sigh. “I’m not dying, Galgo.”
“But you seem nervous. Tense.” A pause. “Have you tried meditation?”
Barney gave the man a look that spoke for itself.
Galgo put his hands up in surrender. “Just saying.”
“Look, Darcy is going to be here at any moment with her new guy. I’m trying to keep my cool, ok? But it’s not easy.”
“It should be.” Galgo told him simply. “You love the kid, you know she’s smart. You raised her well.”
Barney sighed. “I can’t take credit for that.” He confessed. “It was all Celia.”
“Oh, the ex.”
“Yeah…” Barney scratched the back of his head. “I wasn’t there most of the time, even before we divorced. There was always this mission and the next, and the one after that… Celia raised that girl and…” He paused. “There are times when I regret it. A lot.”
Galgo hummed. “How does Darcy feel about that?”
“She says she understands. But that’s my girl, you know? She knows I served because it was the right thing to do, but still…”
“Kids want their parents to be there, right?”
“Yeah…” Barney took a sip from his drink.
“For what’s worth, man…” Galgo put a hand on his shoulder. “She knows you love her and that you’re here for her.”
“And that’s why I can’t fuck this up.” Barney groaned. “Fighting with her over this seems stupid.”
“Then just don’t do it.” Galgo spoke as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “She isn't marrying this guy. You have time to meet him, get to know him. Between all of us we can figure out if he’s an asshole without even asking. I still have contacts in some major agencies.”
Barney grinned. “So do I.”
“There you go.” Galgo slapped his back, and Barney gave him a look.
“How are you hanging there, mate?” Lee asked, approaching.
“I just had this conversation, I don’t need to have it again.” Barney declared, taking another sip from his beer.
“That bad, hm?” Lee smirked.
“I thought he was going to cry.” Galgo stage-whispered to the other man.
Barney pushed Galgo off the stool.
Gunner came up to them with Toll. “Is Darcy here yet?”
“No.” Barney stood up and turned to his friends.
All the expendables came closer, like they were about to start a mission.
“Listen up.” He spoke up. “Darcy is bringing her boyfriend, and we’re going to treat him well. We’re going to drink, laugh and make jokes. No interrogation, no torture, no death threats.” He ignored the disappointed grunts. “We’re going to show her we can all be mature about this. After that I'll call my contacts and run a background check on him.”
That seemed to mollify most of them.
The door of the bar was pushed open and they all turned to it, expectations running high.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” Barney grumbled.
It wasn’t Darcy. Trench and Church were there and making their way to the expendables.
“What the fuck you’re doing here?” Barney wanted to know.
“You didn’t think we’d miss this, did you?” Trench grinned around his cigar.
Notes:
In the next chapter we finally have the meeting! And Darcy’s mom ;)
Chapter Text
“Is your mom coming?” Jane asked looking around.
“Yup. She should be here any minute now, because…”
“That’s her.” Brock pointed at a woman coming out of a taxi.
“Mom!” Darcy squealed, startling more than one biker.
“Jelly bean!” Celia squealed.
Celia Lewis -formerly Celia Rossa -hugged her daughter as if they hadn’t seen each other in years. They’d had dinner less than ten days before.
“Brock!” Celia beamed at him. “Come kiss your favorite mother-in-law.”
Brock chuckled. “Also my only mother-in-law.” He pointed out.
“Favorite ever, then.” She ammended, as he dropped a kiss on her cheek.
Celia also squealed over Jane and Thor being there. Darcy very often wondered how the hell had her parents even had a relationship when they couldn’t be more different. Celia was bubbly and full of pisitivity and Barney… Was not.
But at some point that had to work, because Darcy was there. So…
“Is your dad being silly again?” Celia demanded.
Only Celia would describe Barney’s behavior as silly. “He is.”
She rolled her eyes. “Don’t worry, Jelly Bean, mom is here.”
It might sound weird, but Darcy was really relieved that she was there. “Let’s go.”
Darcy entered the bar and looked around, easily find her dad and his friends by the bar. “Hi daddy!” She called loudly, waving in his general direction.
Barney turned around and immediately smiled upon seeing her.
“OH MY GOD!” Brock freaked out beside her. “Barney Ross is your father?”
Darcy was pretty sure she’d told Brock his name before. “Yeah. So?”
“I am dead.” Brock groaned. “I swear fathers normally don’t scare me, but…”
Darcy frowned. “What the hell is wrong with you, Captain Testosterone?”
“Darcy, that man is a legend!” He hissed anxiously at her.
She arched an eyebrow. “So?”
“And I’m having sex with his daughter!”
She looked at him flatly. “I’m glad you remember it.”

Let me know your feelings!

“Darcy is here!” Gunnar celebrated.
“Isn’t that Celia?” Lee asked almost at the same time.
All Barney’s happiness died. Darcy brought Celia? That was a low blow! He had promised he would behave!
Oh… Yeah… He could see why she might have wanted to bring her mother along.
But still! Not cool.
“Celia still looks great.” Trent commented.
Barney glared at him. “Don’t even think about it.”
Trent arched an eyebrow at him. “I thought she was your ex.”
“Don’t. You. Dare.” Barney hissed.
“Oh.” Church was smirking. “This is going to be great.”
Barney gave him a confused look. “What are you talking about?”
“Do you know who’s your daughter’s boyfriend?” Church asked, clearly delighted.
Barney narrowed his eyes. “Why?”
“Because I do.”
That was not good. Barney found Darcy with a guy next to her.
“He looks familiar.” Trent squinted, like he was trying to see him better.
He did look familiar. He also looked way too old for Darcy.
“You’re turning purple.” Lee informed Barney. “Deep breath in. You can do this.”
Darcy was approaching them, holding the boyfriend’s hand. Barney was more and more certain he’d seen this guy somewhere before.
“Dad!” Darcy hugged him as she came closer. “I see you brought everyone here.” Her smile promised a wolrd of pain if he was up to something. “Let me introduce you.” She put a hand on the boyfriend’s chest. “This is Brock Rumlow, he’s my…
“YOU ARE DATING FUCKING CROSSBONES?”
“Oh… I guess dad has heard of you, babe.”
