Quick Reference/Refresher/Extra Media

for A Tempest in Time

Note: Updates from 5/27/2023 are in bold type.

Character list and other notes, if you skipped the prologue ( https://archiveofourown.to/works/32469706 ), or need a refresher if it’s been a while since you read it.

The prologue covers a time period of nearly seven years, beginning with the day Katsuko and Toshiie were flung by a wormhole into feudal Japan (late 1575) through a few weeks after the Honno-ji incident (summer 1582).

The Tempest in Time fics occur in an Ikemen Sengoku multiverse. While each story stands on its own, occasionally, as the timelines destabilize, characters from one story will encounter their alternate selves in other stories. However they work independently on their own and can be read in any order:

  • Twelve Lies I Told Shingen Takeda ("Twelfth Night") - takes place after the end of Kenshin's romantic route
  • A Mitsunari Night's Dream ("A Midsummer Night's Dream") - takes place after the end of Nobunaga's romantic route (but prior to the epilogue when Mai and Nobugana travel to Europe)
  • Ten Things I Hate About Mitsuhide ("The Taming of the Shrew") - takes place (mostly) after the end of Hideyoshi's eternal route (however Chapter 1 takes place concurrent to it, about three weeks after Honno-ji)

This will be updated with additional characters from other routes as needed. Soundtrack link for routes at the bottom.

Original Characters (OCs)

  • Katsuko (also, Katsu, Katsuhira, Kaya and Okatsu) – Modern day student/snowboarder who was flung into Sengoku Japan six and a half years prior to Honno-ji. Currently disguised as a boy (Katsu), she is a courier/scout… and sometimes a maid. Nicknames she has earned. "Devil" (Shingen), "Brat" (Mitsuhide), "Lady Okatsu" (Mitsunari)
  • Yamaoka Akihira (Aki) – a “Merchant of Information.” Took Katsuko in, trained her in survival skills (archery, riding, swordsmanship, lying), now employs her as a courier/scout. Prone to disappearing on mysterious missions for weeks at a time.
  • Iekane – At one point employed by Aki as a courier/scout. Flirted with, then later tried to kill Katsuko by locking her in a crate and leaving the crate in a warehouse. Whereabouts currently unknown.
  • Toshiie – Katsuko’s brother, medical student, currently missing somewhere in Sengoku era Japan. Possibly aboard a Portuguese ship.
  • Hikosane ("Hiko") - a ten year old boy; a peasant ("Twelve Lies..."), a daimyo's son ("A Mitsunari Night's Dream"), employee of merchant Shojumaru ("Ten Things..."), or something more...?
  • Shohime ("Sho") - Hikosane's older sister; a peasant ("Twelve LIes...") a princess ("A MItsunari Night's Dream"), a personal maid ("Ten Things...")
  • Francisco – Portuguese merchant, beloved of Fume, friend of Aki, taught Katsuko Portuguese, mangler of the Japanese language. He drew a portrait of Toshiie based on Katsuko’s verbal description that she carries around with her.

Minor OCs who may briefly appear/be referenced in routes:

  • Fume – Akihira’s chatelaine. Dislikes Katsuko. Calls her “devil girl” and once chopped off most of Katsuko’s hair.
  • Takauji – Employed by Aki as courier and as a spy at a bookshop in Azuchi
  • Okitane, Niwa – previously employed by Aki; currently work at an Inn
  • Moonlight – Katsuko’s horse. Hates getting wet. Will bite when annoyed. Inspired by author’s cat.

Background OCs who will recur in various roles depending on the timeline:

  • Susumu - restaurant owner ("Twelve Lies..."), vassal/samaurai ("Mitsunari..."); relative of Yoshimoto ("Ten Things...")
  • Hana - a healer/wife/mother ("Twelve Lies..."), Susumu's wife/archer ("Mitsunari..."), relative of Yoshimoto ("Ten Things...")
  • Sute - a kunoichi employed by Shingen ("Twelve Lies...," "Ten Things"), nickname of a cannon ("Mitsunari...")
  • Mozumi - a daimyo, Hikosane & Shohime's father, ("Mitsunari..."); elderly daimyo, no children ("Ten Things...")
  • Tadayo - an artisan ("Twelve Lies..."), a bookseller ("Mitsunari..."), fabric merchant in Sakai ("Ten Things...")
  • de Souza - Portuguese merchant in Sakai ("Ten Things...")
  • Goro - one of Mitsuhide's spies ("Ten Things...")

Katsuko’s Introduction to/relationship with Sengoku Warlords (Cybird Characters from VN) at the conclusion of prologue.

Characters who have not seen her:

  • Mitsuhide – Katsu delivers messages from Aki to Mitsuhide (Aki and Mitsuhide are also playing an extended game of Shogi by mail), but they have never met each other. Katsu saw the back of his head once.
  • Motonari – has not met Katsu, but she overheard his voice when she was trapped in the crate.

Characters who believe Katsuko is male (Katsuhira/Katsu):

  • Nobunaga – Met Katsuhira in Osaka. Katsu translated a business meeting between Nobunaga and Francisco. Offered Katsu a job.
  • Hideyoshi, Ieyasu, Mitsunari, Yukimura, and Mai (game MC, also a time traveler) – Encountered Katsuhira while she was disguised as an old man at a bookseller in Azuchi.
  • Ieyasu also met Katsu four years prior when there was an injury to her horse.
  • Masamune – Got into an impromptu horse race with Katsu, outside of Azuchi
  • Kyubei – Katsu’s regular contact in Azuchi; the other step in the message chain from Aki to Mitsuhide. Kyubei and Katsu are friends.
  • Kenshin – Encountered Katsu in a forest in Echigo and immediately threatened to fight “him.” Katsu talked her way out of it.
  • Shingen – Katsu got caught in the middle of a fight in a brothel in Sakai between Shingen and some drunken sailors. For a moment, they fought back to back, but did not speak.
  • Sasuke (also a time traveler)– Initially rescued by Katsu when he got caught in a tree soon after he arrived in the Sengoku time period. Sasuke and Katsu are friends and encounter each other regularly on the road during various errands for their employers. They have not yet discovered the other is also a time traveler.
  • Yoshimoto – met in Azuchi while Katsu was taking the drawing of Toshiie around to merchants. They occasionally correspond.

Characters who know she is female:

  • Kennyo – rescued Katsuko after Iekane locked her in the crate. Four years later, Katsu witnessed Kennyo in the forest following the assassination attempt on Nobunaga
  • Ranmaru – Met Katsuko after Kennyo rescued her from the crate. Loaned her his clothes.

Ten Things I Hate About Mitsuhide

For Shingen's story, the soundtrack dips into the singer-songwriter, sometimes angsty and self-reflective - it goes a bit dark on occasion.  Mitsunari's is more classic 60's pop and modern girl-power anthems.  For Mitsuhide's story, the soundtrack is Tango heavy (something about Mitsuhide always makes me think of a tango). S ongs are not in chapter order, so feel free to randomize.
