The new portal was, to say the least, harder to build then the two before it.
The old portal that he abd Maxwell had made was full of obvious mistakes as he saw them now. It was almost funny, how he and the other man thought this would free them.
When reviewing the early blueprints with winona, the most mechanically skilled out of them all, she noticed something off with the lever.
"Hey, that's wrong" she pointed out "The lever would just spring back up like a button."
He glanced over, realizing she was indeed right "Oh! Thank you, I hadn't noticed that. Ill fix that up once this winters over, we have maybe... 3 more days? Yeah I should have the things to fix it by then"
She gave a questioning look "Really? I could help you out y'know. Get it done by tomorrow"
"Its fine, you already have to deal with the rest of the portal, especially since the deerclops attack. Ill handle it." He gave winona a reassuring smile before going back to the rest of the sketches, talking about the little kinks and mistakes they notice.
Those 3 days pass, the task of fixing the portals lever forgotten and instead replaced by a much more relevant task of trying to stop webber from bringing sleeping spiders into the camp for a "sleepover".
Again.
Days turn into to weeks turn into seasons that turn into years. Deaths and loss of worlds don't stop them as they continue on their goal.
As the seasons pass, the portal was getting closer and closer to finishing. Only a few days left, and they'd be free. Out of this hell. Home. Looking around at the mix of survivors around him, he could tell that they where all excited and even a bit scared for the days to come.
But what was for certain was that...
they where ready.
--------------------------------------
Now, this was it. The day they all have been waiting for. The day that Wilson Percival Higgsbury flips the switch, and their all set free.
They all crowed around the portal, scared of what was to come, exchanging hugs and goodbyes, others wondering what will meet them back home, and others (ahem wx) not giving a shit.
Wilson stood by the lever, looking around at the all of the friends he's made. All the cherished relationships he's created in a horrible place like this. He found Maxwell in the crowd. He met the magicians eyes as Maxwell gave a rare, kind smile. His eyes watered as he smiled back, and pulled the lever, no hesitation this time.
The portal shook to life
