Work Text:

The thing is, Chuuya never really wanted much on his birthdays.

Every year since Dazai and Chuuya got together, they spent their birthdays quietly. Yes, Chuuya gets a ton of birthday mail from his colleagues and business partners- and perhaps that's why he likes to spend his birthdays alone with his family.

So when Dazai comes up with the most splendid idea to surprise Chuuya, his crazy workaholic husband, at his office (Yes! How genius of him!)- he, of course, had to put this plan into action.

Which is how he ends up here, with Aya (who’s wearing a beautiful dress from Zara, plus, a beige trench coat that matches his own, might he add) clutching his right hand tightly, and a bouquet of flowers (camellias, their favourite) in his left.

His “chic disguise” consists of a white blouse, paired with a bolo tie that Chuuya bought him last Valentine’s day, grey trousers, and of course- topped off with sunglasses from Gentle Monster.

Aya has matching sunglasses on too, her red hair complimenting the beige tones of her trench coat.

She might not be a detective, but she definitely looks the part!

“Alright, detective Aya! Do you remember what we went through?” Dazai says, crouching down to meet his daughter’s level.

He gets an enthusiastic nod and thumbs-up in response.

Dazai places a kiss on Aya’s forehead and pats her head.

“That’s my girl. Now let’s go surprise Dad.”

----------

Okay, so Dazai may have miscalculated some minor things in his carefully formulated plan.

You see, NC Comms is a huge company with hundreds- maybe even thousands of employees and branches all around Japan. It is the biggest PR firm in Japan after all, so there’s bound to be lots of people Dazai doesn’t recognise.

(And, of course, lots of people that don’t recognise Dazai).

It’s not that Dazai has never been to the NC Comms HQ- he’s been there multiple times, but not often, since there was not really much need to. Plus, he’s got his hands full with Aya- who’s still a toddler who doesn’t do well, amazing in big public crowds. Since Aya turned 3 last September, she’s been starting to do a little better in public spaces like the mall, thanks to Dazai’s ”training”.

Said “training” consisted mostly of Dazai shopping for hours at the mall and Aya following along under the influence of her father, picking out items for herself too.

Back to the matter at hand! You see, the majority of NC Comms know who Dazai is, obviously- but many have not yet met the husband of their CEO.

Which is precisely why Dazai is here, stuck at the lobby of the building, because the receptionist isn’t letting him in.

“I told you, I’m Dazai Osamu.”

“I’m very sorry sir, but we cannot let you in the building to meet Mr. Nakahara unless you have an appointment, or some form of employee ID.”

“Why would I need an appointment- We’re married and this is our child-” Dazai says, gesturing to Aya, who still has her ‘detective poker face’ on.

“Sir, if you keep demanding entry, I will have to call security on you.”

What the hell?

Dazai sighs and steps away from the reception desk, heading over to a quieter corner of the ground floor.

Maybe he could call Atsushi for help? After all, Atsushi is Chuuya’s assistant.

“Hi, Atsushi. I was wondering if you could help me with something.”

“Oh, sure. What is it?”

“Could you help me tell the receptionist to let me in- or-”

Dazai hears the familiar voice of another man beside Atsushi, and the shuffling of blankets.

“Sorry, Dazai-san. I’m actually on vacation right now and it isn’t convenient for me to be speaking and- I have to go! Bye!”

The call ends and Dazai is left with the sound of beeping.

Shit.

And he can’t call Akutagawa, because he’s obviously with Atsushi.

“Daddy?”

Dazai looks down at his daughter, who’s looking up at him with an impatient look in her eyes.

“Yes, darling?”

“Where’s dad?”

“Aya, we can’t see him yet because the receptionist isn’t letting us in.”

“But- you said we will see dad!”

The little girl clumsily takes off her sunglasses and passes them to Dazai, and starts to sniffle.

“Aya, why are you crying?”

“I miss dad. Did he leave us?”

Dazai crouches down and retrieves a pack of tissues from his pocket, dabbing at the tears that are falling down Aya’s cheeks.

“Aw, darling. Dad didn’t leave us, he’s just been busy.”

Chuuya’s been very busy lately, because of how demanding his new client is- he gets off work at around 10pm, and by that time, Aya’s already fast asleep. Plus, he wakes up early to head to the office too- much earlier than their daughter.

Hence the reason why Aya hasn’t seen Chuuya much.

Well, it seems like Dazai has no other choice.

He heads to his contacts and clicks into Chuuya’s.

“Chuuya, can you come down to the lobby?”

“Are you and Aya there? I’ll be there in a bit- let me just finish signing these papers.”

And in a bit, Aya does run over to her dad who’s walking towards them. She gets picked up easily by Chuuya, and is attacked with kisses, making her giggle again and again.

“Hi.”

“Where are my kisses?” The brunette pouts.

Chuuya places a soft kiss on Dazai’s lips, and puts Aya back down, allowing her to hold his hand.

“Happy birthday, my love.” Dazai says, handing the camellias over to him.

“Aw, thank you so much. Why did you come here?”

Aya perks her head up at the question and steps closer to tug at Chuuya’s sleeve.

“It was gonna be surprise! Reeee-cep-tion-ist didn’t let us go in!”

“Oh my god, did she just learn how to say ‘receptionist’?” Chuuya asks, crouching down to pat Aya’s head. “You learnt a new word today, Aya?”

This earns a nod from Aya and Dazai smiles. “I only said that word once, I can’t believe she learnt it that fast.”

“Our daughter’s a little genius. Aren’t you the smartest girl, Aya?” Chuuya praises, standing back up to face Dazai. “You wanted to come and surprise me?”

“We wanted to. The receptionist didn’t let us in, though. Just as Aya said.”

And so Chuuya brought both Dazai and Aya along to the receptionist and told her to remember their faces, and even gave Dazai an ID so he could enter the HQ anytime now.

(Chuuya knew that now there would be more surprises from his husband, and he’s obviously not complaining).

He made a few calls to postpone some meetings, just to take an early day off work to spend a long day with his family- starting with lunch with Aya and Dazai at Bar Lupin, then back home where a cake Dazai ordered was waiting.

They sent Aya over to Gin and Higuchi’s house to have a playdate with Yuki, and for dinner they went to the Ritz Carlton in Tokyo- just to spend a long overdue date night.

“Do you remember when we met here?” Dazai asks, in the midst of walking to the hotel room they’ve booked for tonight.

“Of course I do. What was it again- the question you asked was something about advice for shopaholics.”

“Mhm, you saved my ass that time.”

“I think that’s when I started falling for you.”

“Oh, so it was love at first sight for you?” Dazai laughs.

“Well, the first time we met you were trying to cut the queue and interrupted my lunch.”

“Aw, Chuuya remembers! I said you were hot that time, so is all forgiven?”

“I ended up marrying you, dumbass, so I guess it is.” Chuuya says, using the keycard to unlock the door and head in the room- which is absolutely breath-taking, by the way. There’s a huge, king sized bed in the middle of the suite, and a stunning marble bathroom.

The view from the huge glass windows are even more breath-taking- from the 53rd floor here, they can see Tokyo perfectly.

Even Chuuya is gasping in awe everywhere he looks.

“I know the suite is pretty, but pay attention to me.” Dazai says, crossing his arms in front of Chuuya and frowning.

And how could Chuuya not?

He walks over to Dazai and wraps his arms around the other’s waist, resting his head on the brunette’s shoulder, then tilting it up to meet Dazai’s ear to whisper.

“Hm, Osamu, I wonder why you booked the hotel?”

Dazai gently grabs one of Chuuya’s hands, and the redhead curls his fingers instinctively to untuck the white blouse Dazai is wearing.

“I wonder why.”

He brings Chuuya’s hand up, under the shirt, just for him to feel the familiar feeling of lace.

The same one from their wedding night.

And that’s how Dazai ends up on the bed, underneath Chuuya- whose lips are everywhere and- wait- where did his clothes go?

The rest is a blur of kisses, lots of giggles, “oh fuck”s and more of, well, lets just say screaming of names.

Best. Birthday. Ever.
