Their Start - A Tobias & Casey Story

Summary:

This is a kickoff for an ongoing Tobias Carrick / Casey MacTavish (MC) series. It will begin mostly with rewrites of their scenes in Book 2 and 3 (along with supplemental original works). Eventually, it will be all original works (with PB Characters, of course.)

This initial "chapter" is a rewrite of the scene in OH2, Chapter 3 where they meet at the deli. And, in this version, both like what they see.

Characters belong to Pixelberry, Bold Text is directly from original story, Open Heart 2

Chapter 1: A Deli...ghtul Meeting

The aroma of coffee filled the apartment, not just coffee, good coffee, which could only mean one thing. Sienna was making it. Casey yawned as she dragged herself to the kitchen. 5:00 AM. Ugh, she could sleep another two hours, but the chaotic sounds meant everyone was home which was such a rarity these days, and she didn’t want to miss out.

“Hey, sleepyhead,” Sienna said as she entered the kitchen, “I figured you’d want to catch your last winks before your shift.”

“Not when I can smell your coffee brewing! Plus, we haven’t all been here together in, I don’t know how long. There is no way I was missing it.”

Sienna leaned over to give her friend a long side hug, and Aurora cleared her throat loudly on the other side of the table.

“I’m actually glad I have you all here together. I have an announcement to make.”

“What’s up?” Elijah asked, “Sounds serious?”

“Well, it is, I guess. I’ve been offered a chance to transfer my residency to Mass Kenmore… and I’ve accepted.”

“Oooooohmygod!” Sienna squealed.

Elijah looked blankly from face to face for reactions, “Is this a prank?”

“Aurora… you called that guy from the deli?”

“Ooh, what guy?” Sienna asked.

“A freaking hot guy,“ Casey grinned. "But I digress!”

Aurora blushed as Casey filled the friends in about her heroic diagnosis at the deli.

“Whoa, Aurora! That sounds badass!”

“So, who is this guy exactly,” Jackie asked.

“Tobias Carrick. He’s an attending at Mass Kenmore. He set up a meeting with their chief of medicine yesterday, and they offered me the position this morning.”

Jackie grimaced. “I mean, you do you. But I don’t get why you’d want to go there. Mass Kenmore’s great, but it’s not Edenbrook.”

“That’s exactly why I want to go. At Edenbrook, I’ll always be Harper Emery’s niece. But Dr. Carrick didn’t know who I was when he gave me that card. I want somewhere to make it on my own. It’s time for me to carve a new path.”

“Well, if that’s what you want, then I couldn’t be happier for you!” Sienna ran over and wrapped Aurora in a hug.

“I can’t believe you got recruited right off the street! This calls for a celebration at Donahue’s soon!” Elijah said, giving her a high five.

“I couldn’t agree more, Elijah!”

“So, can we veer back a bit? Is Dr. Carrick the hot guy?” Sienna asked with a wink.

“According to Casey, he is” Aurora laughed, “she may have mentioned something about having his first six babies.”

“You did NOT say that to him!” Sienna gasped.

“Sienna, we were in a deli getting breakfast. Not a bar at 2:00 AM after I had three drinks too many. Of course, I didn’t say it to him. But I did say it to Aurora.”

“Oh, Casey…” Aurora said, shaking her head.

“Oh, come on, Aurora! Are you saying he isn’t hot?”

“He’s attractive, for sure. But I wasn’t the one standing there with my jaw on the ground like someone was.”

“Smooth, Case. Real smooth,” Elijah laughed

“Hey! You weren’t there. I wasn’t that bad.”

Everyone looked to a smirking Aurora.

“If you say so, Casey. But he did ask about you when I was at Kenmore yesterday.”

“He did not!”

“Well, not directly. But he asked if my friend and I went to Boston Pocket regularly.”

“Aurora, that’s a bit of a stretch, that doesn’t mean…”

“Oh, yes, it does,” Jackie interjected. “Why the hell else would he care?”

“I did happen to mention when we have a Saturday off, we go after our 10:00 AM yoga class. Then I dropped that we are off this Saturday.”

“Aurora, we don’t have a 10:00 AM yoga class.”

“Nope, but we can certainly go there after our pretend one,” Aurora grinned.

“Aurora, seriously,” Casey sighed. “Are we in middle school? Maybe we could get his address, and I’ll just walk around his block a zillion times.”

“Ooooh, he lives right off Union Square in South End… not too far from here….” Sienna smiled.

“Not far in distance, but far in every other way,” Elijah laughed.

“It is a nice area, Casey. If you wanted to go….”

“Sienna, you are not googling the man’s address!”

“I already did, and his photo. OMG Casey, you’re right, he is hot.”

“Guys, I’m not lowering myself to these levels.”

Yet,” Jackie chided.

Elijah took the phone from Sienna’s hand, raising an eyebrow when he saw the picture. "I have two words for you, Casey. Get it!”

“You are all awful.”

“Casey,” Aurora interrupted, “Jackie and I will be having breakfast at Boston Pocket on Saturday morning. If you want to join us, you know where we live.”

“I’m not doing it.”

“Suit yourself. Maybe I’ll check him out,” Jackie grinned. "He is pretty hot.”

____________________

Saturday morning arrived and there was no sign of Casey at the apartment when Jackie and Aurora set out.

“Looks like she chickened out,” Jackie said.

“Yep, well, let’s walk over anyway. I’m curious to see if he shows.”

Jackie marveled at the place after being seated in a shiny red booth.

“How come you have never brought me here, this place is adorable.”

“Jackie, it’s a deli.”

“Yeah, but I’m getting serious retro diner vibes, I like it. So, where did you miraculously saved a man?”

“I didn’t really… well, I guess I did, and it was…”

“Where? Aurora, speak.”

“He just walked in,” she whispered.

“No freaking way!“ Jackie said far too loudly. "Oh, Casey, you are such an idiot! She may not want to play middle school games, but if he is willing, then…” she turned around and caught a look at him, “Damn. She should be playing whatever games she needs to be playing to get with that.”

“Jackie, he is my boss.”

“And who arranged this little setup, Aurora? Hmmm?”

Tobias’s eyes were scanning the deli when Aurora waved. Feigning surprise, he walked over to her booth.

“Aurora, fancy meeting you here!”

“Yeah, it’s quite the coincidence. Oh, and the woman rolling her across from me is my other roommate, Jackie.”

“Sorry,” Jackie said, extending her hand. “Filters and me, we just don’t go together. It’s nice to meet you.”

“Don’t worry,“ Tobias laughed. "I was born filter-less. So, where is

“I’m a friend,” Jackie stated sarcastically. “Oh! You mean our hot blonde friend. The one who was here the other day. She couldn’t make it.”

“Oh,” he said, disappointment apparent on his face. “that’s… too bad.”

“You know, Tobias, I could just give you her number.”

“Aurora, I don’t know if she’d appreciate you giving her number to some strange guy….”

“You’re not strange, you’re my boss. Plus…”

“She is not going to mind. Trust me,” Jackie interjected.

Bells chimed as the door to the deli sprung open and slammed against the adjacent wall. Casey stood there, her face red with embarrassment, as every patron turned to stare at her. But it was one smirking patron, in particular, that caught her eye.

“Well! Speak of the devil! Look who just graced us with her presence,” Aurora waved Casey over to join them.

Tobias’s eyes lit up as she walked their way. He thought she was a vision last week dressed down without a stitch of make-up, but now, with a low-neck black sweater, skintight jeans, and made-up just so… goddamn. He was earning her number before this day ended.

Jackie and Aurora exchanged a knowing look after catching the two glancing at each other.

“So, you made it after all?” Aurora asked with a mocking grin.

“Uhm, yeah, I finished my errands early, so I…”

“How lucky for me, uhm, I mean us,” Tobias smiled.

“Oh,“ Casey blushed, "hello, again.”

“I’m glad you stopped in. You’re saving me the trouble of calling you.”

“Calling me?”

“Yeah, Aurora was about to give me your number… I hope, I hope that would have been OK….”

“Trust me, it would have been ok,” Jackie mocked.

“Jackie!” Aurora yelled with a scolding stare.

“Well, why don’t you two take this booth. Jackie and I were about to leave. We’re going to see the new M. Night Shyamalan movie in 20-minutes.”

“Casey, weren’t you planning on joining us?” Jackie teased.

“No, I wasn’t. You know his movies give me nightmares.”

A content smile crossed Tobias’s face as he took a seat.

“Well, it looks like I’m getting lucky twice in one day,”

“Play your cards right, maybe you can go for the hat trick,” Jackie said sardonically.

“Jackie!” Casey yelled as Tobias let out a deep chuckle.

“Casey,” he spoke with a smile so disarming her answer was assured, “why don’t you join me… my treat?”

“Sure, I’d like that,” she said before turning and sticking her tongue out at Jackie.

“You guys should have the lemonade,” Jackie winked as she stepped out of her chair. “It’s an amazing thirst quencher.”

“Let’s go!” Aurora grumbled as she dragged her away by the elbow.

Casey lowered her head into her hands on the table, only peeking up at her companion from under the protective cover of her bangs.

“I’m sorry about my friend. She can be a bit of… an asshole.”

“Nah,” Tobias laughed, “I kind of like her. There’s no need for you to be embarrassed.”

“I’m not embarrassed!” Casey insisted.

“You’re blushing.”

“So are you…”

“Touché.”

“Hi,” a perky waitress arrived at the table, “Could I get you two something to drink?”

“I’ll just have water for now,“ Casey smiled. "Thank you.”

“And for you sir?”

“I think I’ll have the lemonade,” he grinned. “A large glass of lemonade.”

Casey ran a hand down the front of her face with a playful groan. “You’ve got jokes, I see.”

“I don’t see anything funny about it,” he smiled. “So, Casey, tell me about you.”

“About me? There is not too much to know.”

“Oh, I highly doubt that.”

“Let’s see, I’m an exhausted resident who works far too many hours, rendering the rest of her life kind of dull. I expect it to be this way until, oh, I don’t know, when is retirement?” she grinned.

“Well, it sounds to me like you’re in need of a little more enjoyment in your life.”

“Is this where you tell me you can help with that?”

“Nope,” he said with a shake of his head. “That’s completely up to you if that should happen.”

Casey looked away coyly, before turning back to him with newfound confidence. “Well, it seems you already are.”

The smile on his face met his twinkling eyes; he was clearly happy with her answer. Leaning forward, the conversation continued.

They spent the next hour or so getting to know each other better; both were having such a lovely time, they couldn’t tell you how much time had passed. There was laughter, joking, and occasional longing stares over the table.

Casey thanked him as they headed out the door, but Tobias was not ready for their time together to end just yet.

“Would you like to, maybe, walk around for a bit? I mean, it’s a nice day, and I’d love the company.”

“Sure,” she said, brushing her hair back behind her ear. “I’d like that a lot.”

Walking around wasn’t as easy as dining together. It was a bit awkward. Should they get closer? Maybe take the other’s hand? No, that seemed wrong. So he walked casually with his hand in his pockets, and Casey used hers animatedly as she talked, which often left him laughing.

Tobias noticed a street performer juggling as they passed a corner park, and he took the opportunity to gently touch Casey’s back as he turned her in its direction. Casey wanted to lean into him so badly but couldn’t bring herself to do it. It’s not even a date. She reminded herself.

After a while, they were standing next to each other as they waited for the light to turn. No longer able to keep his eyes off of her, Tobias was staring directly at her when she turned to catch a glimpse of him.

“What?” she asked flirtatiously.

“Would you like to go out sometime?”

“I think I’d like that.“ There was no containing her grin, but it paled in comparison to his.

“Good! Now the challenge. We’re both doctors, break out your phone and let’s see when our schedules mesh. Are you free Thursday?”

“No, I’m working a double; but I can do Friday?”

“Mmm, I’ve got a seminar out of town. But what about the weekend?

“Oh, I work the whole thing. The following Friday?.”

“No can do,” he shrugged. “That weekend?”

“I have to help a friend move.”

“I could come.”

“I don’t think you’d enjoy it,” she laughed.

“I think I’d enjoy anything with you.”

“You’re too much.”

“So, I’ve been told. Well, look, I have another hour. Why don’t we hang out for now and take it from there?”

“Sounds like a plan.“

He extended his arm, offering it to her.

“Only if you want to,” he said.

“I really do,” she smiled, slipping her hand into the crook of his arm.

Passersby would have assumed they were together forever, the way they laughed and easily conversed; each completely taken with the other. When they turned a corner, Casey noticed an ice cream parlor she had been meaning to try.

“Ooooh! I hear that place is great. Want to get ice cream?”

“Sure. I can get you ice cream,” he smirked. "But you’re pushy for a first date.”

“Uh, first, I never asked you to get it for me. Second… this is a date?”

“It is now,” he whispered as he leaned in for a kiss.

Casey felt her heart racing as she leaned in toward him, finally giving in to the magnetic pull she felt from the moment their eyes first met. Their lips were parted in eager anticipation when his phone rang.

He leaned his forehead against hers and grimaced.

“Just give me a second,” he said, taking the phone out of his pocket. "I wouldn’t even look except… damn it!”

“What is it?”

He handed her his phone as to prove what he was saying was true.

“Kenmore. There’s an emergency I need to go in. The timing couldn’t suck more.”

“Hey,” she nudged him with a smile. “I’m a doctor too, I understand. Go ahead.”

“Well, before I go, let’s put our numbers in each other’s phones. I intend to see you again… soon.”

“Oh, do you?

“Try and stop me,” he winked. “Hey, are you OK to get home alone from here?”

“Uhm, it’s broad daylight, I’m a big girl, and I live in Boston,” she laughed.

“Ah, so you’re a wise ass. I like it.”

He leaned over and placed a gentle kiss on the forehead.

“Text me,” he stated. “As soon as you get home, if possible. I mean it. I’ll be waiting.”

“I promise,“ she smiled as she watched him disappear down the street. Letting out a deep sigh when he was no longer in sight, she turned on her heel and decided to visit the ice cream shop alone. She had been dying for a chocolate cone. But when she entered, she saw a sign for homemade lemonade.

“Can I help you?” A teenager asked from behind the counter.

“Yeah, lemonade. The biggest size you’ve got.”

  • Summary: Casey & Tobias finally get to spend some time together, but her friends put a damper on their plans. Later, they meet up unexpectedly at Leland Bloom’s mansion, where it becomes apparent that they have much more to learn about each other.

This was originally part of a series called “Their Start,” but I decided to break this down into individual fics that explain how they came to be, fell apart, and got back together again. Because it was originally a series, the chapter is a bit longer than a standard fic; it’s really like 2-3 one-offs in one.

Click. Click. Click.

Jackie looked up from her book and glared across the kitchen table at Elijah. After a moment, her eyes returned to her book.

Click. Click. Click.

This time she looked to her left where Casey sat glued to her phone, a sappy smile on her face, nothing else seemed to matter.

Jackie cleared her throat. Loudly. Elijah looked up at her and smiled, then she looked back at her book.

Click. Click. Click.

“OH, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!!” Jackie screamed, startling her two roommates.

Aurora broke into laughter, entering the room just before Casey and Elijah’s heads nearly hit the ceiling.

“What the fuck, Jackie,” Casey yelled, “You scared the shit out of me!”

“Casey was that constant clicking not driving you NUTS!”

“Apparently, it wasn’t, Jackie!” Elijah scowled. “It seems to be just you.”

“No, it’s not,” Aurora injected, “I could hear you clicking that pen all the way in my room. If Jackie hadn’t done something about it, I was considering coming in here and lodging it in your abdomen.”

Jackie crossed her arms with a satisfied grin.

“Aurora! I love what Mass Kenmore has done for you! The edge! I love it!”

“I think you’re both unreasonable, I mean, Casey is sitting right here, and it didn’t even bother her! Right, Casey?… Casey?…Case…”

“What?” Casey said, looking up from her phone, that stupid grin still front and center.

“Oh, Casey has you so tuned out. She wouldn’t know if you had a jackhammer going,” Aurora teased. “Who are you texting, Case?”

“I, uh.. nobody! I’m just, uhm… scrolling through social media.”

“Mmm-hmm. You must be on the same social media pages as my new boss because he’s always glued to his phone with that same look on his face. Of course, when I asked him what he was so engrossed with, he had the decency to be honest with me,” Aurora smirked as she bit into an apple.

“Oooooohhhhh. You’re holding out on us, Casey,“ Jackie sang. "And we want details.”

“Guys, there are no details to give. I haven’t seen Tobias since that day at the deli with you, and that’s what, two weeks ago now.”

“Mmm. That’s because their schedules haven’t meshed,” Aurora informed. “Which is probably why he asked me if I’m willing to change mine up a little so he could be more available when a certain attractive blonde doctor from Edenbrook is off.”

Casey’s eyes narrowed. “As if he said that!”

Aurora chortled, “Of course, he didn’t say that. But the man is as lovesick as you, and he did ask if I could make some changes to my schedule”

Aurora stood and walked to the refrigerator, a bright smile on her face. “And would you look at this!” She exclaimed. “The changes he asked me to make correspond exactly with Casey’s schedule.”

“Don’t do it!” Jackie interrupted, “Don’t do it unless she spills more tea or lets us look through her phone.”

“Jackie!” Casey admonished.

“I’m siding with Jackie on this one,” Elijah laughed.

Casey gasped, “After was the only one not allowing them to impale you with your own writing instrument?”

“That’s only because you’re wrapped up in Dr. Love Bug over there. If not, you would have held me while they impaled.”

Aurora nodded, “He has a point.”

“A ballpoint,” Jackie snorted as the friends broke out into laughter.

“OK. Fine! I am texting Tobias. No harm in that, right?”

“No, none at all.”

“Hey, Aurora,” Elijah asked, “what time will you be at Donahue’s tonight?”

“I should be there by 8:00, the latest.”

“I’m so glad we’re all going to be there! Your new career move deserves celebrating!” Casey smiled.

“Well, I’m sure my Aunt wouldn’t agree with that, but I do.”

“I guess it’s fair to say that Harper won’t be there tonight, then?” Jackie joked.

“Yeah, that’s fair,” Aurora replied. “But I happen to know one tall, dark and handsome doctor at Kenmore who intends to be there. But you already knew that, didn’t you, Casey.”

“I cannot confirm or deny your accusations, Dr. Emery!”

“Mmm-hmmm. I’ll be there at 8:00, guys, but Tobias will likely arrive a little before I do,” she winked at Casey before leaving the door. “You know, in case you want some alone time.”

____________________

The clock struck seven at Donahue’s, but it couldn’t be heard above Sienna, Casey, and Bryce squabbling as they attempted to hang a congratulations banner.

“I told you it won’t stick with that tape!” Sienna scolded.

“Well, what would you have me use, Sienna? Bubble gum?” Bryce asked.

“How about we just tack it, guys?” Casey offered.

“For the record, I told you how to do it. You just aren’t listening, Bryce!”

“I mean, seriously, I can get the thumbtacks from Reggie. They work every time,” Casey said, seemingly to no one.

“You told me, but you told me the incorrect way!”

“You know what,“ Casey said. "I’m just going to go sit up front and have a beer since you two don’t realize I’m here anyway and all.”

And she was correct, neither even noticed she was gone when she slunk off to the bar.

“What will it be, gorgeous?” Reggie’s deep baritone belted.

“Pint of Sam Adams,” Casey smiled.

“You sure that’s strong enough?” He asked, gesturing to the bickering duo in the back, “You’re going to be dealing with them a while.”

“Oh, I most certainly am not dealing with them. They lost their chance.”

“Then I would hide if I were you. That little one, she is tiny, but she is feisty.”

“Ah, she doesn’t scare me, none,” Casey grinned.

Twenty minutes later, Casey stretched her neck, looking at the back of the bar.

Why the hell are they still arguing! She shook her head and looked at her empty glass.

“Time for a refill, Case?” Reggie asked.

“You were right. Something stronger may be in order after all.”

“What will it be?” Reggie asked, placing a fresh drink napkin in front of her.

“Jack Daniels on the rocks.”

“You know, what, make that two,” a smooth voice announced from behind. Casey felt his hand fall on to the small of her back as he claimed the barstool beside her. “And put them on my tab.”

“Absolutely,” Reggie nodded.

“Tobias,” Casey gushed, turning to look at him.

“Hey, beautiful, what a surprise seeing you here.”

“You’re so full of it,” she giggled.

“And there you go ruining my little chance encounter fantasy just like that! Thanks a lot, MacTavish.”

“That’s OK,” she said, picking up the fresh drink Reggie placed before her, “there are so many other fantasies to choose from.”

Tobias smiled, then unabashedly leaned over and placed a firm kiss on her cheek.

“You have no idea how happy I was to learn I would finally get to see you tonight,” he smiled.

“Oh, I have some idea. I’ll let you in on a little secret,” she leaned over and whispered into his ear, “I’m the one you’ve been texting and trying to see.”

He pulled back, eyes wide as he feigned shock. “You are?!”

Casey slowly nodded with a grimace. “I hope you’re not disappointed.”

“Hell no! It just goes to show what good taste I have.”

Suddenly, a shattering sound from the back distracted them. Casey noted Elijah and Jackie had also entered the decorating melee.

Tobias stood up from his barstool. “Should, ah, we go help them?”

Casey grabbed his hand and pulled him back toward her. “Not on your life!”

“That works for me,” he winked. “Hey, Reggie, two more?”

“Coming right up.”

For the next half hour, Casey and Tobias talked, giggled, and inched their stools closer together until his arm was on her back, his fingers brushed her hair behind her ear, and the feel of his breath against her ear as he whispered left her tingling. Then Bryce barged in on their little game of seduction.

“I’ve had it with them tonight,” he spat, falling into the stool on the other side of Casey.

Casey looked at Tobias with wide eyes before swiveling toward Bryce.

“What’s going on with all of you tonight?“ Casey reprimanded. "I’ve never seen you so tense over such nonsense.”

“I don’t know. Double O Tiny is on a power trip, and you’re not there to reign her in.”

“I was unaware that was my job?”

“You just do it so well,” Bryce pleaded.

“Are you telling me you’re afraid of Sienna, Dr. Lahela?”

“Well, no, as much as I’m afraid of Jackie….”

Casey raised a questioning brow.

"Come on, Case! Come help me out back there, please….”

“No,” she said firmly.

“No?”

“No. Bryce,” she said, reaching for Tobias’s arm behind her, “I’d like to introduce you to Tobias Carrick; Tobias, this is Bryce.”

“Oh!” Bryce said, finally realizing Casey was with someone, “Oh… OH! I’m sorry, I’ll step aw… I’ll leave you two alone, but I’d hide better if I were the two of you. She’ll spot you any second now!”

He nodded curtly at Tobias before scurrying away.

Casey shook her head with amusement and turned back to Tobias.

“Sorry about that.”

“No worries,” he insisted. “So, uh, you and Bryce… uhm… are you two….”

Casey choked on her drink. “Bryce? Are you asking if I’m sleeping with Bryce? Because, no, I’m not.”

Though he had attempted to keep his feelings guarded, relief was evident in Tobias’s eyes. “But you have in the past,“ he snickered.

“And how, pray tell, do you know that?”

“Because I’m good at these things,” he smirked, “so, is that confirmation?”

She pursed her lips smugly before hitting Tobias’s shoulder.

“Screw you, Carrick,” she giggled.

He laughed, “Well, color me jealous of Bryce.”

Casey turned to face him, her cheeks turning pink.

“Well, that’s very silly of you to be jealous of Bryce.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Sure, I’ve slept with Bryce in the past,” she said nonchalantly, “but I don’t intend to sleep with him again. But,” she said, raising her hands. “if that’s who you want to be jealous of, so be it.”

She turned to face the bar, leaving him staring longingly at her silhouette.

“So,” Tobias mumbled into her ear, “who do you plan on sleeping with in the future? Because whoever they are, that’s who I need to be jealous of.”

Blushing, Casey stood up and placed her arms around the back of his neck. Leaning into his ear, she whispered, “It would be really odd for you to be jealous of yourself.”

“It’s happened before,” he laughed.

“Why am I not surprised?”

“Because I can be a cocky son-of-a-bitch? But you seem to dig it.”

“Shut up,” she chuckled.

He pulled back from her and cocked his head to the side with a seductive smirk on his face.

“Oh, you want me to shut up now?”

Casey bit her lip and nodded as she gazed up at him from under her eyelashes. The faint blush on her cheeks betrayed her composed façade as heat welled up inside her.

He caressed the side of her face, trailing his fingers from her ear, over her cheek, across her jawline finally running over her lips.

“Gladly,” his voice rumbled.

His lips brushed gently against hers, offering an innocent, chaste kiss.

“Is that all you’ve got?” she teased.

Without a word, Tobias sucked in a deep breath and pulled her close. He smiled with satisfaction as a small gasp escaped her just as their lips met. Casey’s head was spinning. Never before had her first kiss with someone she wanted so badly taken place standing in a bar full of people. Tobias had her intoxicated, and it had nothing to do with the bar tab. Neither made any effort to come apart, she let him take the lead with his warm lips as his tongue traced the inside of her mouth, as if he had finally found his way home. They later wondered how long it would have lasted if Aurora hadn’t slipped in the front entrance and walked by them.

“Hey, Casey! Boss! Thanks for coming to my celebration. Your enthusiasm is touching.”

Casey and Tobias pulled apart with a gentle smack, a sly smile on his lips, and a sheepish grin on hers.

“Uhm, we’re both just really happy for you, roomie.”

“Mmmm. Well, carry on then. I wouldn’t want to dissuade you from celebrating.”

“We should probably go join them for a bit,” Casey whispered to Tobias as Aurora walked away.

“For a bit,” he emphasized.

They shared another brief kiss before Tobias took her hand and led her to the back. Casey’s eyes rolled as her friends leered at her when they entered. Elijah offered a thumbs-up as she passed by. When they reached the table, he wrapped his arm around her and leaned over to whisper in her ear.

“Do your friends actually hold up score cards too?”

“Please, don’t encourage them,” she laughed.

They managed to share a couple drinks and some laughter and conversation with the group. They even danced a couple times, but for the remainder of the night, Casey and Tobias’s minds were solely on one another. Every moment delivered a sly glance, another clandestine stroke of the skin; it was only a matter of time before Tobias took her hand and led her to the patio doors.

“I don’t think the patio is open tonight.”

“Do you care?” he asked.

“Not in the least bit.”

“Good answer.”

They stumbled into the empty patio, giggling like two kids about to get caught by their principal. Casey grabbed him by the waist and pulled his hips against hers. She playfully kissed his neck, his ears his cheeks when he cupped her cheeks and pulled her lips back to his.

“I had no idea you were this much of a rebel, Dr. MacTavish,” he smiled.

“Well, come to think of it, you don’t know all that much about me.”

“I know that I like everything I’ve learned so far, and I can’t wait to learn more.”

Casey giggled and went to kiss him, but he pulled back slightly, avoiding her lips.

Her brow furrowed, “I’m sorry, did I do something wrong?”

“No,” he whispered, “follow me.”

Tobias flung back into a wooden lounge chair in an obscure corner of the garden, and Casey sat at its feet facing him.

“Well?” she asked with a nervous giggle.

“Anxious to continue, doctor?” he asked with a gleam in his eye.

“A bit… hoping you are too.”

“Oh, I am,” he answered with a devilish grin that left no doubt in her mind, “but I want to be clear before we do. I really want to get to know you better, Casey. I’m so attracted to you that I’m in danger of bursting right now, but I don’t want you to assume I’m just trying to get into your pants. Even though, and let me be clear, I am also trying to get into your pants.”

Casey tossed her head back in laughter, then shoved him further back into the lounge chair.

“You are one of a kind, Carrick.”

“There are many out there who would say thank God for that.”

“Well, I’m not one of them. And, for the record, I’d like it to be known that one can get to know someone better at the same time as one is trying to get into someone’s pants. The two are not mutually exclusive.”

“Oh, they’re not?” he breathed; his eyes were twinkling in the moonlight, and Casey’s smile reflected back in them.

“No,” she said, raising her leg and straddling him. "They’re not.”

“That’s great to know,” Tobias gasped as one hand grasped her long hair and pulled her into a kiss; the other ran forcefully up her back. He moved with such confidence, such familiarity it felt as if they had been together a lifetime, but at the same time, the euphoric newness was undeniable.

Casey’s senses were overwhelmed, and she knew she was treading into dangerous waters. There was simply no saying no to this man, but rather than running to the shore, she was preparing to dive headfirst into the waves.

Pressing her chest closer to his, she deepened their kiss as her hands rubbed along his muscular arms. She let out a groan as his hands clasped her ass, and their hips began to grind against each other. She lifted her head in an attempt to gasp for air, and Tobias tugged at her long hair, pulling her head back and giving him full access to the delicate skin of her neck. His tongue swirled over her and his other hand cupped her breast over her t-shirt. Things were about to go too far, and Casey was eagerly seeking the gas pedal.

“Casey!” Aurora screamed as the patio door crashed open. “Oh, my God!” She gasped, covering her eyes with both hands.

“Uh, we’re kind of busy here, Aurora,” Casey moaned.

“I can see… or I did see that… I didn’t want to see that! I, uhm, I hate to bother you, but Sienna is in the bathroom, and she’s pretty sick. I was going to ask if you could help me get her home, but I will ask someone else.”

“No. No, Aurora. Go to her. I’ll be right there.”

Aurora flung out the door without another glance.

“I am so sorry,” Casey whimpered as her head fell to Tobias’s chest. .

“Don’t be. We’re pressing pause, not a stop.”

“I’d rather be pressing something else,“ she grinned. "To be continued?”

“You bet. Now, let’s go help Sienna. I’ll push the embarrassment of my direct report catching me groping her roommate to a later date. I want to be able to help.”

“Oh, you don’t have to help. We can get her home.”

Tobias tilted his head and looked at Casey. “Do you think I’m going to let the three of you get on the T right now with her in that condition?”

“It wouldn’t be the first time….”

“It would be the first time if I was here to help you. Go, go inside… I’ll join you in a few.”

“Oh, are you ok?”

“Oh, yeah. I think I just want to let a little something… settle down… out here for a moment before I join you.”

Casey kissed his cheek with a smile. “Tobias, I know our jeans were still on, but I was pressed up against you pretty good there, and there is no little about it.”

Tobias’s face lit up. “You just want to see my egotistical grin now, don’t you?”

“Pfft. Like I haven’t seen that before.”

~~~~~~~
Casey offered to sit in the back seat to have the trash bag ready, but Aurora insisted she would do it. It made sense; who wants to sit next to their boss after witnessing him in a compromising position with one friend, as another was turning green in his backseat.
Based on the looks Aurora was shooting Casey in the rearview mirror, she sensed Tobias would never be included in their outings again.
When they pulled up in front of their building, Casey jumped out of the car to gingerly steer Sienna’s head out of the back door. They didn’t get all this way for her to puke all over Tobias’s car now.
Seeing Sienna wobble on her feet, Tobias offered to carry her in.
“No. Nope. You don’t know my roommates well enough to be carrying them yet, although it is clear you’re doing all you can to remedy that… at least with one of them,” Aurora clipped. “Trust me, I have experience getting drunk people into our apartment unharmed.”
Casey lowered her eyes. “Well, I’ll help you get her in.”
“Nope. You guys stay here. I’ll get her tucked away. I’ll see you tomorrow, Dr. Carrick, and we never speak of this night.”
“Hey, this night was mild, Emery. There is nothing to worry about.”
“Good. Because there is also no chance, it’s ever happening again.”
“You can’t say that!” Tobias laughed, “Not when I’m freaking crazy about your friend here. You’ll be seeing plenty of me.”
Aurora either didn’t hear or chose not to. But Casey’s head flicked up to look at Tobias’s.
“Uh, good friend’s boss and guy that was groping me in the beer garden say what now? You’re not even tipsy, Carrick!”
Tobias laughed as he pressed her body flush against the door of his car.
“I’m not remotely tipsy, and that was not a slip. You’re something pretty special,” he muttered, brushing her hair behind her ear. “I know we’re still getting to know each other but, with every bit I learn, I want to know a hundred times more and, I don’t see that stopping.”
Casey studied his expression carefully but didn’t say a word, then he continued.
“So, yeah, I am crazy about you, and I am looking forward to seeing where this goes.”
Her perplexed expression gave way to a warm but cautious gaze.
“I am, too,” she smiled.
“Good,” he grinned, then leaned in for a tender kiss good night. “Come on,” he said, “I’m walking you to your door.”
“It’s like fifteen steps, Tobias?”
“Yes, and I’m walking you those fifteen steps,” he said, extending his arm.
She shook her head and chuckled, “OK, then.”
“Now, it’s not like you don’t text me round the clock.”
Casey playfully punched him.
“It’s not like you don’t initiate that!”
“Are you complaining?”
“No,” she said, rolling her eyes.
“Let’s figure out some time to see each other soon. I don’t want to wait another two weeks before I see you again.”
“I’m in agreement on that.”
Then, with a quick kiss on her cheek, he was off. Casey walked through the door of her apartment with a conspicuous grin on her face, relieved her friends were all tucked away in their rooms as she entered.
She rushed to her bed and fell back with glee, she hadn’t felt this way in a long time, and she had to admit… she liked it.
The next morning Casey is snuggled up in bed, long after breakfast, enjoying a rare day off until an impatient knock comes at her bedroom door.
“Go away!”
The knock comes again, louder this time. She rolled out of bed and trudged to the door.
“This better be important….. Oh!”
Ethan stood in the hallway, his arms crossed.
“Oh, uh… good morning.”
His gaze flicked down to her barely clothed body before returning to her face. A pink blush pricking at his cheeks.
“Erm.. we have a case. You’ve got three minutes to get dressed.”
“A case? I’ll be ready in two.”
“Good answer. The board is desperate to impress this patient, so wear something nice.”
“Are you saying I don’t always look nice?”
“That’s not what I… What I mean is we can’t afford not to impress this guy. Afford in a very literal sense.”
Casey sighed. If being former lovers wasn’t enough to cause tension between her and Ethan, he was still simmering over her overstepping his wishes and luring a wealthy internet influencer to be treated by their team. Casey despised inequity in healthcare as much as Ethan did. But she knew if they didn’t do something to make their team profitable, all their pro-bono work would suffer. To her, the ends justified the means; to Ethan, it was all or nothing. Exactly why their attempt at a relationship had, and now that attitude was impeding on work too.
She noticed he hadn’t turned away.
“Ethan?”
“Yes?”
“Do you mind?”
“Oh, uhm yes. Of course, I’ll be in the car outside. Do be quick.”
Casey caught Ethan eyeing her as she made her way to Baz’s red Mini Cooper.
“Good morning, Baz. June,” she said, sliding into the backseat next to her boss.
“So, does my look meet with your approval, Dr. Ramsey?” she teased.
“You look very…er, satisfactory.”
“You should have been a poet.”
Ethan filled them in on their mission during the drive. His voice seething with disgust at having to attempt to lure a billionaire to their hospital for treatment. Casey kept her head turned out the window, well aware that his ire was aimed at her. As desperate as she was to retort, she felt it best to let this one slide, even if it meant biting her tongue until it bled.
“Ethan, we understand that you’re not happy about this,“ June stated. "But some of us like the idea of still having our positions six months from now. So, try to embrace this as an opportunity for the team’s continued success.”
June caught Casey’s eyes in the rearview mirror and nodded approvingly before continuing.
“And, Casey, you look simply fetching today. Very smart outfit; you represent the team well.”
“Oh… uh… thank you, June,” Casey sputtered. Taking compliments in a professional setting was something she still struggled with, especially when they came from Dr. June Hirata.
“Don’t sound so surprised, Dr. MacTavish. You need to learn how to own your successes. Brandish them in the manner you should.”
“Well, thank you again,” Casey replied more confidently. And now It was Ethan who sat with his face peering out of his window.
Baz turned his Mini-Cooper down a long, tree-lined driveway. Perfectly kept gardens sprawled out beyond them.
“Whoa. Did we take a wrong turn into Versailles?”
“Not quite. Though I’m pretty sure this guy could afford to buy Versailles if he really wanted to.”
“When you said he was rich I thought you meant celebrity rich, not…”
“Oligarch rich?” June smiled.
“His name is Leland Bloom. One of the biggest tech investors in history, and the third richest person in America.”
“Wow, that’s a terrifying amount of money,” Casey exclaimed.
“What’s terrifying about out?” June asked, astounded.
“The power that comes with it,” Casey quickly replied.
She noticed Ethan turn to her, a look of almost approval in his eyes.
The team approached the enormous front doors. They opened before Ethan could een reach for the antique brass knocker.
“Good morning, doctors,” the butler greeted, “I trust you’re the team from Edenbrook? If you’ll please follow me, I’ll take you to join the others.”
“The others?” Baz asked.
“Come. Mr. Bloom will explain everything.”
Casey and Ethan exchanged suspicious looks at they followed him inside the palatial mansion. Every single piece of furniture looked like it cost more than four years of college. She was so distracted by the décor that she didn’t notice the small team of doctors in white coats standing near a gorgeous antique couch.
“Aurora?” Casey asked, “What are you doing here?”
“Me? I’m working! What are  you  doing here?”
“We’re here to treat Mr. Bloom.”
Casey’s eyes went wide when another doctor entered the room behind Aurora.
Tobias?
“Nope. No way. I dunno what kind of game you’re playing here, but….”
He stopped short as soon as he saw Ethan.
“Ethan Ramsey, in the flesh! Nice to see you again, buddy. How long has it been, now?”
“Not long enough.”
“Hey, Tobias,” Casey smiled as Ethan jerked his neck in her direction.
“Casey,” Tobias grinned even wider as he observed Ethan’s reaction. “Well, this day just got a whole lot better. I certainly didn’t expect to run into you.”
“Hey, Tobias,” June sneered as she strolled into view behind Casey.
“Uhm… and June too!” Tobias stammered. “Wow. You are all here. Look at that!”
“What the hell is going on here?” Ethan demanded.
“I see we’re already getting acquainted. Introductions, yes I’m Leland Bloom. And this is my wife and business partner, Caroline.”
“Hello doctors. Thank you all for coming.”
“Hey, I like surprises as much as the next guy, but I think you double-booked.”
“You always were a little slow to catch up, Tobias…”
Ethan turned to face Leland as the old man reclined in an armchair.
“Mr. Bloom wants a competition.”
“What I want, Dr. Ramsey, is excellence. And, in my experience, competition is the farther of excellence. You and your team are commonly lauded as the best diagnosticians in the country. I worry that makes you cocky. Complacent.”
“We’re not,” Ethan simmered.
Tobias was shifting on his feet. Holy shit… He knew Casey was a resident at Edenbrook, but she never mentioned being on the diagnostic team. So she worked for Ethan? But also worked with June… oh, fuck.
He all but tuned out Bloom as he went on a soliloquy about competition spurring excellence and how he expects the two highly respected teams to compete for the chance to treat him. He was even too zoned out to hear Casey impressively challenge the tycoon. But Tobias Carrick was not one to let an opportunity slip away, and he heard just enough to join the conversation once again.
“So it’s a race to diagnose you? That’s a new one. Hell, sounds fun. We’re in.”
“…And we’re out,” Ethan exclaimed before turning on his heel and striding out from the room.
“Oh, come on, Ethan! You’re not gonna deny me the pleasure of kicking your ass, are you?” Tobias taunted.
He turned and saw Casey gazing at him with a perplexed look before she turned to June and Baz, both appearing panicked.
“If you’ll excuse us a moment, Mr. Bloom,” Casey said before running after Ethan. She could hear June and Baz offering apologies as they followed her.
Ethan was already entering the car when Casey reached the front door.
“Let’s go. We’re leaving. If he thinks I’m going to jump through hoops for his money then….”
Inside, curiosity got the best of Tobias, who needed more detail about the commotion taking place.
“Dr. Emery, would you be kind enough to gather Mr. Bloom’s samples? I’m going to get my laptop from the car. I’d like to download some data regarding this case before we leave.”
“Sure thing,” Aurora smiled as Tobias made his way to a small room off of the foyer, the perfect place to eavesdrop.
“Ethan, please,” Baz pleaded, “we need this. You know we need this.”
“Ethan, stop being such a goddamned diva!” Casey scowled.
Tobias’s eyes went wide. Damn.
“Excuse me?” Ethan spat.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Would you prefer spoiled child? Or maybe entitled jackass.”
“I…”
Tobias held his breath. Jesus Christ. Did I just hear her correctly? She’s a resident… and she spoke up to Ethan Ramsey like that… holy shit… I hope she simmers down. This is not how I want her to make me come for the first time.
“Baz, June, and I are doing our best in a crappy situation. What exactly are you doing to help?”
Ethan glanced at June and Baz. They watched the exchange wit wide, impressed eyes. Ethan cleared his throat, chastened.
“I, uh… “Spoiled child’ seems to suit the occasion. I owe you all an apology. Let’s get to work.”
Tobias made haste to get back to Leland’s bedroom, where Aurora and his team were wrapping up. His mind was completely blown. If he weren’t already painfully attracted to Casey, he would be now. He needed to know everything about her. Was she even human? Now he knew she was connected to Ramsey… and to June… and that just complicated things between them tremendously, but that was no deterrent. This woman had him captivated in a way he was having trouble understanding, but he wasn’t letting go.
Entering Bloom’s bedroom, he put his game face on. He had a lot of things to check off on his to-do list right now, but only one took precedence, and that was making sure Ramsey’s team did not win this patient regardless of who was on the team.
“Did you get what you need?” Aurora asked her boss.
“If by what I need you mean a better idea of how to treat, absolutely. Halfway to the car, I realized the systems we have in place aren’t adequate. But I saw something in a journal last week and, Mr. Bloom, if you’re so inclined, I’d like to utilize a new system I read about that could synthesize the data we obtained….”
Aurora watched, impressed, as Mr. Bloom’s eyes lit up. Medical technology, Tobias was talking his favorite language, tech, and the Kenmore team’s stock just kept going up. She turned when she heard Casey and her team reenter the room.
“Does this mean you’ve decided to stoop to our level after all?” Tobias gloated.
“Mr. Bloom, I apologize for my outburst. If you need proof that my team and I are the best diagnosticians available to you, we’re ready to supply it.”
“I’m glad to hear it. Though, I must say, Dr. Carrick and his team have left the better impression.”
“Patient’s all yours, Doc. We got what we need. Let’s go, Aurora, team.”
“Good luck, Casey,” Aurora smiled.
“You too!”
“Hey, come on, no fraternizing!” Tobias scolded.
Casey eyed him as he and Aurora made their way out of the room, passing June on the way. Tobias gave her a curt nod.
“Hirata.”
“Carrick.”
Tobias saved his bright smile for his newest rival, Casey.
“Good seeing you, Dr. MacTavish,” he winked.
“Likewise,” she nodded as both Ethan and June took note.
"I’m sure I’ll be seeing you again soon.” And then, he was gone.
The moment Casey slid into the backseat of Baz’s car, she felt her phone vibrate. Tobias was already texting her. She inconspicuously glanced over her shoulder, taking great care to ensure Ethan couldn’t see who she was texting before she replied.
“Who was so eager to get in contact with you, Casey?” Ethan asked.
“What, I’m not allowed to get texts now?”
“It was just a question.”
“And I just gave you an answer.”
She shifted to her side so she could continue texting in private.
After Casey slipped her phone into her purse, she caught June glancing at her in the vanity mirror.
“Casey,“ she spoke. "I wasn’t aware that you were acquainted with Dr. Carrick. How did that come to be?”
“Yes, I was curious as well,” Ethan added.
“He’s Aurora’s boss. Aurora is my roommate. I thought you two were diagnosticians?”
Baz chuckled, “She got you both there.”
“Well, I guess we will all learn a lot about each other during this competition,” June said, almost scornful. “Casey, you have an advantage, living with the enemy.”
“Aurora is not my enemy, and I will not engage in conversations with her about this matter given these circumstances.”
“This is a nightmare,” Ethan groused. “I truly can’t believe this is what we’re reduced to.”
“Oh, Ethan, take it easy! This could be fascinating,” June smirked, “I can only imagine the fun things we will learn along the way.”
Casey gazing down at her phone with a silly grin on her face had become so commonplace back at the apartment that her roommates began to wonder what was wrong when it didn’t occur. Even if they were enjoying a night at Donahue’s, in time someone would spot her glued to her screen like a lovestruck teenager. Bryce suggested chipping in to purchase her a waterproof phone case, in the event of drooling, but the idea was nixed.
That’s what Casey’s life out of work had become, but inside the halls of Edenbrook was another matter. There such behavior would not go unnoticed, and it would not be received with the same good humor. Any more than a split second of such antics would garner unwanted attention, and it wouldn’t be a matter of if she’d get caught; it would simply be how long it took and by whom.
“Someone special, Dr. MacTavish?” June inquired with an accusatory smirk.
“What? Oh, no. Just texting a friend.”
June raised an eyebrow. “Do you always turn that distinct shade of crimson when you’re texting a friend?”
Casey slid her phone into her pocket. “It’s really none of your concern, June.”
“Perhaps not,” Ethan interjected, “but as your boss, both of you are a concern of mine. So, if we’re done with social hour, perhaps we could get back to what we’re paid to do?”
“Sounds good to me,” Casey replied cheerfully.
The morning was busy and passed quickly. Casey only looked at her watch when she felt her stomach begin to rumble. No wonder! Lunchtime was over an hour ago. All that stood between her and today’s special in the cafeteria was the small stack of paperwork waiting for her at the nurse’s station. But hunger was all the motivation she needed to wrap that up quickly. She didn’t even bother to sit as the pen in hand glided over her forms, completing them with ease. She was about to place her signature on the last one when she felt a presence behind her. Entirely too close behind her. Before she could turn around to see who it was, she felt the low rumble of his voice against her ear.
“I told you I was going to see you one way or another.”
Her head tilted in his direction, and she gently bit her lower lip as she smiled.
“You truly are a man of your word, aren’t you?”
“When it comes to you? You better believe it.”
She turned around to face him, and, fighting every primal instinct raging inside of her, she took a small step back. She didn’t want to, but they were already eliciting stares and she knew how hospital gossip worked.
“What are you doing here?”
“I made up some bullshit about needing to use equipment not available at Kenmore. I am technically on staff here too, so I have that privilege.”
“Ah, so that’s your cover. So, tell me, why are you really here?”
His piercing aqua blue eyes locked with hers and that smirk that made her want to do things she wouldn’t confess came to his lips.
“Do I really need to spell it out for you? Where am I am taking you to lunch, gorgeous?”
“Where do you want to take me.”
He smiled seductively as he chuckled.
“I’d love to take you right here, but that would create quite the scandal.”
“Yeah, you’d have to guarantee me a position at Kenmore before I’d agree to that.”
“Oh, I could guarantee you several positions at Ken….”
“Can I say anything that you would not turn into sexual innuendo?”
“Highly unlikely. So, let’s stick to the matter at hand. Am I taking you to the cafeteria? Or if you’ll allow me to splurge a little more, there is always Angelo’s across the street?”
“You know what, let’s just eat here. Every time I attempt to go off-site, some sort of emergency happens, and I have to rush back. I’d like to avoid that for the next hour.”
“Then, lead the way,” he said exaggeratedly motioning for her to walk ahead of him.
“I know you’re just doing that so you can watch my ass,” she smirked.
“Case, can you blame me?” He winked.
He walked at her side as they continued down the hall. Unable to take his eyes off her as their banter continued. Anyone watching them could see how overjoyed he was to be in her presence, and between her flirtatious smile, reddened cheeks and infectious giggle, it was clear she felt the same way about him. Several nurses were already making mental notes and, further down the hall, so was Casey’s boss.
Ethan quickly noticed that Tobias was paying any mind as to where he was walking, and decided to take advantage of it. He made his way toward their direction, and moments later he “accidentally” collided with Tobias.
“Oooo! Oh, Ethan! Wow, two times within the same week, what are the chances?”
“Probably about the same as winning the lottery, but this is far less pleasant. What are you doing here?”
“I’m on staff here Ethan, did you forget?”
“No, but I’ve been trying to. And why are you bothering Dr. MacTavish?”
“He’s not bothering me at all,” Casey injected. “In fact, it’s lunchtime, and we’re headed to the cafeteria.”
“Well, then I assume your paperwork is complete. I need that before you can…”
Casey lifted the folder from under her arm and pushed it against Ethan’s chest.
“All yours, Dr. Ramsey. You know I’m efficient,” she grinned. “I’ll see you in an hour.”
“Efficiency is good,” Tobias said with a shrug as he kept pace with her.
He turned and looked over his shoulder as they walked away. “Case, you know I think you’re freaking amazing right?”
She half-smiled, “I kind of had an inkling.”
“Yeah, well, in case there is any confusion, I thought you were hot as hell the moment I laid eyes on you. Then I got face time and I thought, damn, she is something special. But when I hear the way you talk to Ramsey, you own him, goddamn Casey you are a badass! I’m not sure I’m worthy of being in your presence.”
“Hmmm… worthy could be a bit of a stretch, but I’m willing to give it a go. I’m sure we could elevate you to my standards,” she winked.
He shook his head and chuckled. “Why do I have this very frightening feeling that I may have met my match in you?”
“Oh, please,” she said waving her hand, “I’m sure you’re far more depraved than me, I’m just good at witty comebacks.”
“Oh really?” He quickly turned toward her as they reached the elevator bank, leaving her back pressed against the wall where he placed his hand just over her shoulder. “You think I’m depraved, but you just keep coming closer. What do you have to say about that, MacTavish?”
She stared at his lips, no more than six inches away from hers, her mouth began to water. “What do I have to say?”
“Yes.”
“Do you have any singles on you?”
His eyebrows shot up, “Yes. Why?”
“Because I’ll need them for the vending machine. You’ll be buying lunch after all, and it seems like a yogurt and a granola bar will need to suffice.”
"What?” he asked, baffled.
Casey looked both ways down the hall to ensure the coast was clear, then she tugged at the sleeve of Tobias’s labcoat.
“Follow me,” she whispered.
The next thing he knew he was being pulled into a supply closet. He smiled, duly impressed as she leaned against the door as soon as she shut it behind her.
“Kiss me,” she demanded, before claiming his lips with hers.
Her hand wrapped around the back of his neck, as his slipped down to her waist. The kiss was passionate, fueled by the unfulfilled longing they had for each other. Casey felt her lips beginning to swell, only further stoking her desire. She moaned in protest when Tobias attempted to back away, holding his face in her hands, she pulled him back, kissing him even harder than she had before. He emitted a deep groan into her throat, as his hands rapidly roamed over her body, attempting to feel every curve before their time was cut short.
Breathlessly, he pulled back for just a second.
“Casey, are you sure?” he panted.
“Goddamn it Tobias. I didn’t bring you in here to talk,” she gasped.
She watched as the devilish grin he had been sporting turned almost depraved and she felt his hand glide deftly over her hip when he locked the door. Their lips crashed once again and his hands found their way under her blouse, his fingers toying with her breasts over the delicate fabric of her bra. He fought to keep his mouth on hers just to stifle the beautiful noises she was making.
“You’re going to have to keep it down baby, we don’t want to get caught.”
“I’ll try,” she whispered as she began unbuttoning his shirt.
“Once again,” he asked as again between placing wet kisses on her neck, “you’re sure about this?”
Her hands slid down his back and a wicked smile came to her lips as she grasped his ass.
“Do I have to tell you to shut up, again?” she whispered.
His eyes darken with passion as he lifted her by her hips setting her down on a nearby table, her back against the wall. His lips and tongue made their way from her ear to her neck, back up to her mouth before falling to her chest. With one hand cupped over her breast, the other trailed circles from her knee to her thigh, then she felt him push her panties aside as he gently caressed her folds.
Her senese may have been completely overwhelmed, still she’d never forget the look on his face at that moment. Leaning back, she took his mouth back in hers as he rubbed circles over her dripping core. . She reached for his belt and undid his buckle, fighting to keep her moans low enough to go undetected. Then she smiled in anticipation when she heard him unzup his pants.
“I have been dying to do this,” he grinned as his pants fell around his ankles. Casey arched her back in eager anticipation when they heard someone reach for the knob of the door.
Fuck!” they groaned in unison.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
“Is anyone in there?”
Casey’s eyes shot open.
“That’s Bryce,” she whispered. “Straighten yourself up, I’ll take care of him.”
Tobias chuckled as he watched her wiggle back into her clothing as she made her way to the door. Unlocking and opening it just a crack.
“Bryce, it’s me,” she whispered gruffly, “could you, uhm, maybe give us a minute.”
On the other side of the door, Bryce’s grin widened. “What, or better yet, who are you doing, in there, Casey?”
“Bryce!”
“Just get yourself together and get out of there, shift is about to switch. I expected you to know the protocol better. Frankly, I’m disappointed,” he laughed.
“Thanks, Bryce!” She sneered turning to see Tobias, already zipped up, laughing at her.
“I’m sorry,” she said as he took her in his arms.
“I’m not,” he smiled down at her. “I mean, I am, but I’m not. This would have been amazing, I’m sure of it. In fact, I’ll probably spend the afternoon imagining everything we didn’t get to do, but, honestly, it’s not how it want it to go our first time.”
“Who knew you were a romantic,” she smiled.
“Come on,” he kissed the top of her forehead, “let me get you that yogurt and granola bar. You better get back to work before Ramsey locates you and has your… correction… has my head on a patter by the end of the day.”
“You know, you still have to tell me about the backstory between you two.”
“I certainly do.”
“And June, too. I saw the tension between the two of you at Bloom’s. Does anyone other than me like you, Tobias?”
He snorted, “I don’t know, but does anyone else really matter?”
“So, when can I see you again. Three, four weeks?” She said with a frown.
“Hey,” he lifted her chin up toward him, “I’m willing to lose a little sleep tonight if you are. I know of a 24-hour bar downtown, can I pick you up when your shift ends?”
Pleeeaassee,” she pleaded.
“Then it’s a done deal. Listen. I’ll leave the room first and hit the vending machine. Give it a couple minutes then you leave, and I’ll hand you the stash by the elevators. Deal?”
“God, you’re too knowledgeable about this stuff, Carrick.”
“Me?” He asked feigning shock. “Bryce seemed disappointed that you weren’t up on the protocol.”
Casey lowered her eyes and blushed.
“Tell me, little girl, how many times did the two of you hit up a supply closet? Was it, oh wait… was it… oh, I’m not in the supply closet with you, am I?”
She hit his chest with the palm of her hand.
“No! And it was an on-call room with him! ONCE! A completely different vibe.”
Tobias couldn’t contain his laughter as he embraced her.
“Are you saying I just blew my chance at being your first in a supply closet?”
“Maybe,” she blushed.
“Well, then I know where our round two will be,” he winked and then kissed the top of her head. “I’ll see you at the elevator in five, beautiful.”
Without a word, he slipped a peach yogurt and granola bar into Casey’s hands.
“Thanks for lunch,” she grinned.
“Next time I’ll do better than this, I promise. But I mean, it was really your fault,” he grinned.
“I’m not complaining.”
A bell chimed as the door opened.
“I’ll pick you up at 11;00,” he whispered as he turned, almost crashing into a woman exiting the elevators.
“Carrick, fancy seeing you here,” June snapped.
She fixed her gaze on Casey, eyeing her from her head to her toe. Although Casey had done a good job at hiding any “evidence”, June’s eyes locked in on the one blouse button Casey neglected to close.
“MacTavish,” she nodded with a smirk as Casey listened to her high heels echo down the hall.
Tobias sheepishly waived as the doors closed and Casey looked down at her watch. 2:00 PM.
OK. Just nine hours to go.
Tobias was stuck in the line of cars waiting to get to Edenbrook’s main entrance. Even at 11:15 at night, the place was packed. He spotted her sitting on the bench in the distance; her legs crisscrossed beneath her, the light of her phone casting a blueish glow on her face, her hair pulled up into the messiest, messy bun he had ever seen. He smiled. Some men may have been annoyed thinking she didn’t put in any effort, but not him. Aside from the fact that she looked amazing, he found her willingness to be her authentic self with him simply enticing.
Casey looked up from her phone when she heard his horn honk. She picked up the duffle bag at her side and tossed it into the back seat of Tobias’s black Jaguar. She stopped and stared at the car a moment recalling the first time she saw it. She and Aurora had just met him at the deli. They were walking home, talking about the job offer he made to Aurora, and beginning to discuss how… interested… Casey seemed to be in him. When his car unexpectedly pulled up next to them at a red light. Oh, the conversation they were having at that time.
“So, are you going to call him?”
“Mmmm, as much as I’d like to, I don’t think it would be helpful to you. I mean, you’re making a professional connection, and your thirst queen friend standing next to you calls like, ‘Hi, by the way, I want to have your first six children.’”
Aurora burst out laughing, “Case, you don’t want to have anyone’s six children.”
“No, but I would love to practice with him!”
“Oh, boy,” she said shaking her head as she slipped into the passenger’s seat.
He reached over and kissed her cheek, a gesture that made Casey blush.
“Hey, beautiful. I like this seeing you after work thing. I think I could get used to it.”
“Could you now?”
“I said what I said. So, what were you “oh-boying” about when you got in?”
“Oh,” she said turning fifty shades of red, “it was nothing.”
“You should know that I am very persistent, Casey. I suggest you tell me or make up a good story and lie. I will be a total pain in the ass until I know.”
“It’s nothing it… I was just thinking about the day we met at the deli.”
“Pretty great day in my opinion.”
“Mine too,” she grinned, “but, remember when we saw you on at the red light after.”
“Mmmm hmmm,” he smiled, “sure do.”
“Well, I always wondered if you heard our conversation, we were…”
“The one where you mentioned wanting to have someone’s first six kids. I really didn’t catch who it was. I always kind of hoped it was me,” he smirked. He pulled up to another red light and turned to her, “so, was it?”
“Oh, my God!” She buried her face in her hands as Tobias broke out in a fit of laughter.
“So, it was me. You know, six is a few more than I’ve planned on, but if it’ll make you happy, I’m game.”
“Oh, my God…” she gazed out her window, unable to look at him. “I cannot believe… I’m so glad I didn’t know this, I would never so much as looked at you again.”
“You mean the way you’re not looking at me now?”
“You can’t make me,” she said as they pulled into a parking spot a few doors away from the bar.
“Wanna bet,” he grinned pulling her to him for a kiss.
“Casey, it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. It’s OK. You were into me. Newsflash. I was into you too. I think we’ve made that pretty clear by now.”
“I guess you’re right. But, for the record, we really don’t have to have six kids.”
“That’s ok by me,” he smirked, “but I totally support the idea of practicing.”
She felt his hand grasp the hair at the back of her head as pulled her close and gave her a fervent kiss as he gently leaned her back as he leaned over the center console. The tension between them could easily spark a fire.
“Let’s get inside,” he whispered, “because I’m five seconds away from pulling you into the back seat.”
“Would that be the worst thing?” she grinned.
“Absolutely not. But I would like to take you inside and get to know you better. Can I do that?”
“You may,” she smiled as she took his extended hand.
They took their seats at a high-top table in the back of the bar.
“If I recall correctly, it was Jack Daniels on the rocks last time, are we going that strong tonight?”
“You remembered?”
“I make it a point to remember all I can about you. So what will it be?”
“It’s a school night, I think I’ll stick with a glass of merlot.”
“You got it, I’ll be right back.”
Casey sat alone at the table, surprised at how nervous she was becoming. She was always very at ease with him, for the most part. Clearly, they had no problems interacting physically, aside from getting cock-blocked, on two occasions. But this was different, this was really getting to know you and she was really starting to fall for him, and he seemed to be doing the same. She suddenly felt like she was on an interview, and she was eagerly anticipating her wine to take off the edge.
“Here you go, my dear,” he said setting their drinks on the table. He leaned over the table, reaching for her hand, gently stroking the back of it, as he gave her his full attention.
“So, why do you suddenly seem so nervous?”
“I don’t know. Maybe it feels like we’re going into the interview round and, if I may be so bold, I don’t want either of us to screw it up.”
“Well, I have no intention of doing that, and it’s not an interview, it’s just talking with a guy who already thinks you’re pretty amazing.”
“Oh, yeah, pretty amazing guy? So, what do you want to know?”
“Why don’t you tell me about how brilliant you are? NYU, UPenn Med, fifth in her class, junior fellow on one of the best diagnostics teams in the world, and you’re not even 30. Goddamn, Casey, I’m starting to think I should have recruited you in addition to Aurora. But then again, maybe not.”
“Oh, you don’t think I’m good enough?”
“No, you may be too good, but the real reason is I don’t exactly want to be your boss, I like being free of that entanglement.”
“Yeah,” Casey said rolling her eyes and sipping her wine, “no one needs that drama.”
Tobias’s eyes watched her closely, and he took note.
“So, how do you know so much about me anyway.”
“Simple Google search, dear. It didn’t take much.”
“You Googled me?!”
“And you Googled me.” He watched as she blushed, “It’s OK to admit it. If you don’t Google someone in this day and age, you’re either not that interested or a little crazy.”
“Well, you pretty much have my career resume already then. I’m sure you know there was a competition among first-year interns, whoever came in first got the fellowship and, that was me,” she shrugged.
“Stop shrugging right there. I’m telling you now, Ethan Ramsey would not let anyone short of a superstar on his team. A knockout, brilliant, amazing personality… I already know you’re too good for me, MacTavish.”
“Probably,” she giggled.
“OUCH!”
“So, tell me, how do you know Ethan so well?”
“Ethan and I,” he demurred, “we go way back. Med school to be exact. We were friends for a while until we weren’t.”
“I noticed he seems like he’d rather be walking than flames than interacting with you whenever you’re within 10-feet of one another.”
“Excellent assessment. We were friends, but you know how competitive the top med schools in the country are. We competed professionally, and personally, and in the end, it was too much. Ethan is brilliant, but he’s not a very forgiving guy. So, we moved on.”
She could sense his reluctance and didn’t want to push much further just yet.
“So,” he said, “what about the two of you. My observation is that whenever I’m within 10-feet of you his hair is all but on fire, so what gives. Does he just hate me that much, or is he more than a boss?”
“The two don’t have to be mutually exclusive,” she laughed. “We had a thing,” she hesitated, “until we didn’t. If you know Ethan, you know he was not about to have an affair with his intern. So, after a close call on at a medical conference, he treated me like a leper until he quit Edenbrook. Then we had a thing. And it seemed like it might be… something more until he got his job back.”
Casey bit her lip as she paused momentarily. “He told me he was back, he was my boss now, and, once again, we were back to being nothing. A week after he crawled out of my bed, I found out, along with every other intern, that he was off to the Amazon for two months, without so much of a word. He came back asking for a “reset”. I was like, what do you call running away from me for two months?”
She set down her drink down and looked Tobias in the eye.
“Let me clear, one thing I don’t do, that I will never do, is beg a man to want me. I know my worth and I’m never going to do that.”
“Good for you. No one should ever beg, especially someone as incredible as you. Second, that is all so on brand… well, everything except falling for the intern. That one honestly surprises me.”
“Yeah, well, it seemed to surprise him too.”
“Since your "reset”, has he ever… look, I’m asking because I’ve seen you cut him down to size more than once now. That would usually land you out of a job and that would be the best part of his reaction, yet he lets you slide. Is there anything still there, at least on his part?”
She shrugged, “If there is he hasn’t told me. We’re still sort of friends, I guess. I do what he asks, I don’t give him much bullshit and I’m there when he needs an ear. So… how much longer do I have to discuss Ramsey?”
“We’re officially done,” he smiled. “Well, almost… look, I’m not in active competition with him anymore, but part of me feels like there will always be a latent one there. But I promise you, I’ll never involve you in that. I mean it.”
“I believe you. So, moving on. Tell me, what’s your deal with June? Both times I’ve seen you two together there’s some sort of something there.”
He looked at her thoughtfully and she raised an eyebrow as she watched his wheels spinning.
“We had a thing.”
“Oh?” She said, trying to pretend she wasn’t a little shocked.
“It wasn’t a serious thing. I’d say it was friends with benefits, but we weren’t much friends, it was mostly all benefits.”
“So, a fling?”
“I guess you could call it that.”
“I don’t see you two… “
“And I don’t see you and Ramsey,“ he smiled. “The Lahela guy, I can see it, Ramsey, uh-uh.”
Casey laughed, “So, we’re at the point in the relationship where you can start determining which sex partners are best suited for me?”
“Hey, the only potential sex partner I want to concentrate on is the one sitting in front of me.”
Casey blushed. “Well, we almost crossed that off the bucket list today.”
“Yeah, but almost doesn’t count,” he grinned.
They fell quiet for a few minutes, but it didn’t feel uncomfortable. Then he spoke again.
“You know, I really like you, Casey, and I don’t usually really like anyone.”
“Should I be flattered?”
“You can be anything you want. I don’t get to tell you how to be. But I hope you feel the same way and, not solely in a you want to have my first six kids kind of way.”
A huge grin spread on his face, and she threw her napkin at him.
“You are such an asshole!”
“It’s good that you know that upfront, may as well know the real me,” he laughed.
When they both settled down, he took both of her hands in his.
“I’m sending you my schedule tonight, and here’s what you’re going to do. You’re going to switch a shift, you’re going to call out sick, you’re going to do something because I want to have a proper date… spend a proper day with you.”
“I think I can swing that, Baz owes favors.”
“Good,” he smiled.
He paid the tab and they walked outside together. It was already the early hours of the morning, but neither seemed to mind that they would be getting very little sleep. They turned to each other under the dim streetlights his face was intense, as she gave him a seductive little smile. Their lips came together as her hands wrapped around his neck and he caressed her back. What started as a gentle kiss turned into one of longing and abandon. It would be so easy to ask to go to his place, she knew he’d say yes and how long could this fire burn before they would combust. She slowly pulled away.
“Today, in the supply room, you gave me a lot to think about. I think you’re right. Why do I feel like you and me, we should make sure our first time together should be done right, it should be something special?”
“Because it should. Don’t worry, it’s going to happen, and it will be worth every moment of the wait. I don’t know what you’re doing to me, Casey… but I’m not going to fight it.”
He gave her a tender kiss.
“So, pick that day tomorrow, because as much as I don’t mind the wait. I also feel like I’m going to die if it is too much longer.”
“Well, we wouldn’t want that,” she laughed.
He opened her car door and she grinned. She wasn’t sure where this was going, but man, she was enjoying the ride.
Casey turned to make her way down the hall when she heard her name being called. She turned to see June rushing in her direction.
"Good Morning. Ethan would like for us to visit Stephanie, encourage her to participate in a research study.”
“So we definitely want to try for a grant?”
“It would be foolish not to.”
“As much as I wish she didn’t have to spend any more time in a hospital, I tend to agree. The things that could be learned…”
“Not to mention the funding and the attention it could bring. It’s a win-win all around. So, let’s go give this our best effort.”
“I’m right there with you.”
Jackie and Elijah were already enjoying their morning coffee when Casey walked into the kitchen with a yawn.
“We better pour her a cup,” Elijah laughed, “It looks like a caffeine emergency.”
“It sure is!” Casey replied, “I wasn’t able to sleep at all last night.”
Jackie slid a cup over to her friend. “Why is something on your mind? Like a seriously hot doctor from Kenmore?”
“Shut up!” Casey smirked. “He’s not the reason why. I’d have to be with him if he was the reason I wasn’t getting any sleep.”
“So then what gives?” Jackie asked.
“I guess everything going on at the hospital.”
Elijah nodded. “Yeah, we’re all stressed out these days.”
“Have you had any luck getting Stephanie to agree to the study?”
“I talked to her yesterday. I decided to level with her about the grant. I mean, clearly, that’s not the only reason we want her to stay, but she deserves to know the full story.”
“You did the right thing,” Elijah agreed.
“She told me she’d have an answer today. So, that probably explains the lack of sleep.”
Just then, her phone vibrated on her table.
“Oh, and there’s lover boy!” Jackie teased.
“Now, what makes you think it’s Tobias?” Casey blushed.
“Hmmm. What makes you think I meant Tobias,“ Jackie winked.
"Besides, who else wants to talk to you at this time of the morning? I wouldn’t even talk to you if you weren’t here.”
Casey picked up the phone with a bright grin.
“What did I tell you,” Jackie said, taking a sip of her coffee. "Lover boy texts, and she goes all sunshine.”
“Leave me alone, Jackie.”
“Casey… Casey… CASEY!!!!” Jackie snapped her fingers in front of her friend’s face.
“Oh, what?”
“I asked if you want any more coffee before I dump this pot?”
“Oh, no. I’m good.”
Elijah gave his friend a smile. “You really like this guy, don’t you?”
Casey lowered her eyes, almost bashful. “I… I do. I don’t know; there’s something about him we just… click. It feels effortless, you know?”
“The fact that he is fine as hell doesn’t hurt,” Jackie added.
“It doesn’t,” Casey laughed, “but that isn’t the reason why. It’s a whole lot more. I mean, we haven’t even slept together yet.”
“You what?” Jackie asked with her eyes bulging.
“Well, we had a couple interrupted attempts, but we’re both kind of glad because we want it to be … special… you know? We think what we have is worthy of more than our first time being in a supply closet at work. Though we did try that and failed….but…. I am staying over his place Saturday.”
“Wooo-Hooo!” Elijah whooped.
“Well, if there is any seismic activity in Boston Saturday night, at least we’ll know why,” Jackie laughed.
“We’ll try to keep it under a 5.0 on the Richter scale.”
“Hell no!” Elijah interjected, “Go big or go home!”
“I bet she’s hoping it’s big.”
“Oh, it is Jackie… we nearly did it a couple of times. It’s plenty big.”
Jackie ran her hand down the front of her face with a groan. “Why did I bring it up?“
“I don’t know,” Casey chuckled, “but that’s on you. Now, I need to get ready for work, guys.”
“Good luck with Stephanie,” Elijah yelled after her.
____________________
It was a beautiful morning, so the walk from the T to Edenbrook was more pleasant than usual. She smiled as she approached the building…just in time to see Stephanie’s parents pushing her to the parking lot in a wheelchair.
“Stephanie? Mr. and Mrs. Hill? What’s going on?”
“Oh, hi, Dr. MacTavish! We were hoping to find you before we left.”
“Left? What’s going on?”
“We’re, um… taking Stephanie to Mass Kenmore.”
“What? Why? Stephanie, did we do something to upset you?”
“No. Honestly, the opposite. I’m doing what you said I should do.”
“Which was?”
“That I should go for what I want. A doctor from Mass Kenmore called last night and proposed doing the study there instead, and they promised even more than you guys did.”
“It’s honestly such a relief to not have to worry so much. Thank you for being so encouraging to our daughter.”
“This doctor at Mass Kenmore… Was it Dr. Carrick?”
“Yeah, how did you know?”
Casey forced a smile.
“Lucky guess. Well, best of luck with everything, Stephanie.”
“Thanks, Dr. MacTavish. And for what it’s worth, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t. Don’t apologize for doing what’s right for you.”
“Okay, then I won’t.”
She and her parents bid Casey farewell, and she watched as they left the hospital. If only she could earn an award for this performance. Standing there composed and smiling took everything she had in her. Inside, her heart was racing and she felt the heat rushing to her face. She kept telling herself it was a bad dream and she’d wake any second, but she never did.
“Tobias,” she hissed. “How the fuck could you do this to me?”
“I guess you heard the news, then,” an almost condescending voice bellowed.
She clenched her eyes shut. This was the last thing she needed right now. She turned to find Ethan looming over her, his arms crossed defiantly in front of his chest. A look that screamed, “Didn’t I warn you about him” on his face.
“I … I can’t believe she’s going to Kenmore!” Casey gasped.
“It’s not that simple, Casey. She didn’t decide to go to Kenmore. She was poached.”
Ethan studied her carefully as she balled her fists, and her face turned was now crimson.
“Let me guess? You told your boyfriend about her?”
“He’s not my boyfriend!” she spat, her lower lip beginning to tremble. The last thing she needed was her boss, her ex-lover, chiding her about his former best friend. The one who saw everything as a competition. The one she insisted had changed, who cared about her when Ethan tried to warn her. Could she have been that much of a fool?
“Well, he sure looked like he was headed in that direction. How many times have I told you to stay away from him, Casey? He’s bad news.”
“I don’t need this right now,” she cried, brushing past Ethan as she headed toward the entrance with tears in her eyes.
One look at her and Ethan felt like a fool. It wasn’t bad enough that he had hurt Casey; now Carrick had had a stab at it too. She didn’t deserve any of it, but instead of offering solace, he was berating her. Dialing things back drastically, Ethan grabbed her arm.
“Hey,” he groveled. “I’m really sorry. That was out of line. I’m just… I’m upset, too. But this is Carrick’s doing, not yours and you don’t deserve this.”
“Don’t I?” she cried, biting her lip in an attempt to contain her tears. “After all, nothing you said was untrue. You did warn me, and I blew you off.”
“Casey, you fell for a man who has more charm than Bloom has money. You can’t be so hard on yourself.”
“Oh, sure I can,” she laughed sadly, wiping a stray tear off her cheek. “I’m just batting a thousand when it comes to…” she stopped herself when she remembered who she was speaking to. She shook her head with a rueful laugh, “I always thought I was a good judge of character, but…..”
“Casey, you’re human. And the last thing you need is some jerk kicking you when you’re down. I’m truly sorry about this.”
“Thank you,” she whispered, refusing to meet his eyes. Ethan watched her struggle. It wasn’t just a medical loss to Casey; she was feeling a much sharper sting of betrayal, and he knew how that felt.
“Why don’t you take a couple of hours off… go for a walk, do something to take your mind off of things. We can handle things until….“
“No,” she interrupted, standing tall, an air of determination taking over. “No. What I want is to see my patients. I want to do my job. That’s what will help, not running away.”
Ethan smiled approvingly. “Well, then get to it.”
She set off determined not to let this get her down. It was a painful lesson learned, but a lesson nevertheless. Part of her wanted to call Tobias right away, but she was too furious. It would need to wait. Half the morning passed before she heard from him. She ignored his text. Then another. Then another. Until the fourth one got her riled up enough to reply.
When Tobias arrived home that evening, Casey was already waiting on his front steps. He froze in place and swallowed when he saw her, arms wrapped tightly around her knees, her face set like stone, staring straight ahead. No sign of the bright, jovial woman he found himself falling for, and knowing he was the reason made him feel small. There was no avoiding this, so he let out a deep breath and steeled himself before approaching her.
“Hey,” he smiled nervously.
Casey looked up silently, not so much as returning his smile.
“Do you want to go inside? I could make us dinner. Then we could….”
“No,” she shot out. “I absolutely do not want to go inside with you. Besides, what I have to say won’t take long.”
“Case, before you say anything….”
“Oh, no, Tobias. I’m speaking first. I earned that right. How…how could you?”
“If you’d let me explain….”
“Explain what? That you took advantage of me? You wouldn’t have even known about Stephanie if it weren’t for me!”
“No… I wouldn’t have known as quickly, but word like that travels fast. It was all over Kenmore within hours of her waking, and I didn’t tell anybody.”
“It doesn’t matter! told you! She was my patient! You knew I was trying to get a research grant and what that meant to me, and you went and called her behind my back!“
“Casey,” he sighed. “You’re only a resident. You’re new to the game. These things… happen. I didn’t steal anything. I gave her a proposal, an offer, just like you did, and she found mine more appealing. You can’t fault me for that.”
“Yes! I can! This isn’t a fucking game, Tobias! This is a sick woman and her medical treatment!”
“And I’ll make sure to it that she’s treated and given the best of care. Do you seriously think Kenmore was the only hospital that reached out to her? I bet she and her parents heard from at least a dozen others.”
“It doesn’t matter what others may have done! It matters what you did! I thought I meant something to you! You texted me this morning to ask what my day looked like, but you already knew! You already knew what I was walking into. Were you just toying with me? Was a game? I feel… I feel so used!”
Used? I didn’t use you. Casey, you do matter to me, more than you know. And when I texted you this morning, I hadn’t heard back from Stephanie yet. I meant it when I wished you good luck.”
“Please, you know damn well you didn’t. I know I wasn’t your girlfriend, T, but I thought we were something. You should have at least told me. Do you know how I felt? Ethan has told me you’re a snake from day one… and I’ve defended you time and time again! Now I look like a freaking idiot!”
Growing agitated, she stood up and hastily adjusted her coat.
“You know what? There’s nothing more to say. You showed me who you really are, and there’s just… nothing more to say.”
Turning on her heel, she raced down the street as Tobias stood in place. Grimacing, he anxiously tapped his foot on the sidewalk. Before Casey, he wouldn’t have cared. Nothing was ever serious. No one came with strings. A win like Stephanie? That was bigger than any woman. A case like hers was once in a lifetime, and every woman he knew was utterly replaceable. But Casey wasn’t any other woman.
No, they weren’t “together,” but he could no longer deny it…. he wanted to be. And as that realization swirled in his mind, she was walking… no… she was running away from him. He finally understood what he wanted, just hours after he assured it would never come to be. Instinctively, he found himself rushing toward her.
“Casey, Casey,” he yelled, reaching her side, “please hear me out.”
But she picked up her pace, “Go away!”
“Case, I swear I wasn’t trying to hurt you.”
“Well, you did!“ She hollered, stopping dead in her tracks to face him. "I really cared about you, Tobias! I was… I was really falling for you!”
“Cared… falling?“ he gasped softly, "Past tense?”
“Yes! No! Maybe? I… I don’t know what I feel right now. I woke up this morning so excited about my future, professionally and with you. Then in an instant, it’s all undone.”
“Casey, I know you’re not going to believe me, but I really care about you, and I never care about anyone. I know I fucked up. But this whole having feelings is new to me. But it’s amazing. You’re amazing. Please don’t just throw this away.”
I didn’t throw anything away. The only one throwing was you.”
“Case, please… give me a chance to make this up to you. Please?”
The desperation in his voice was palpable. If he wasn’t sincere, he might just have a second career as an actor. She found herself becoming more furious by the minute, not at him, at her. Because her resolution was beginning to slip.
“I… I need to go.” She pushed past him and barreled down the street, but he was quick at her heels.
“Casey, is this it then? Are we… done?”
She turned around and fixed her eyes on him. “I don’t know. I’m going to need some time, Tobias, and if you want any chance at all, you’re going to have to give it to me.”
“That’s not a no,” he smiled weakly. “I’ll take it.”
“That’s the best I can offer,” she frowned. "Now, I… I have to go.”
He watched after her until she was no longer in his sight. He had always been in control of his life, especially his personal life. Never letting anyone in was part of the plan; it was the way he liked it. Relationships and entanglements were work. They were trouble he didn’t need. But for the first time in his adult life, he was starting to see that you don’t always control the narrative. Sometimes someone can take you by storm and make you rethink everything, and it scared him half to death. Not that it mattered now, he may have assured that it was something he’d never have to grapple with, and that left him with a pit in his stomach.
Casey needed a diversion. Going home and moping around the apartment would not help her lift this mood. So she took the next train toward Edenbrook to meet up with her friends at Donahue’s.
Jackie was lining up shots of tequila as the rest looked on when Casey entered, and for the first time since she saw Stephanie earlier that day, her lips curled into a smile.
“Hey, do you happen to have one more of those?” She asked.
“Well, since I bought doubles for everyone, I sure do,” Jackie grinned.
“Oh, thank God,” Sienna sighed. "You can have mine. One is my limit anyway.”
Casey tapped her glass against Jackie’s. “Well, bottoms up!”
“Whoo, that was good! But you…” Jackie said, pointing toward Casey, “you don’t do tequila shots on a school night. So, what gives?”
“I’ve had a shitty, shitty day.”
“I heard about Stephanie going to Kenmore,” Sienna frowned, “I’m really sorry, Case.”
“Wait, Stephanie went where?” Jackie asked incredulously.
“Yep,” Casey frowned. “I can’t stop thinking about it.”
Elijah shook his head. “That is messed up, Casey! They stole that grant right out from under you!”
“It’s not about the grant,” Sienna frowned. “It’s about Stephanie.”
“Well, in fairness, I’m confident she’ll be cared for at Kenmore. They’re a good hospital, we have shared services, and the doctors, well, I guess they are… adequate if not unethical jackasses.”
The friends shot each other looks before Casey continued.
“It was Tobias,” she blurted, throwing her hands in the air. “He made the offer. He is the one who did it.”
“He did what?” Sienna scowled.
“That is seriously messed up,” Bryce said, pushing another shot in front of Casey, “here, you earned it.”
“So, you confided in him, and he does this behind your back?” Jackie asked.
“Yes. I mean, it’s not like he didn’t hear about it in Kenmore by the end of the day. Hell, a med school friend at Duke texted me to ask about it. Word travels fast, but….”
Casey felt Sienna’s tiny hands rubbing circles on her back.
“But he was important to you! He shouldn’t have done this at all, but if he was going to, he should have at least had the decency to tell you.”
Jackie tilted her head. “I don’t want to play devil’s advocate here because I do think it’s fucked up. But these things do happen all the time, and I’m sure it had nothing to do with you, Casey.”
“So what?” Bryce interjected, “he is still way in the wrong, and Casey deserves way better. Now, I think the best thing that you can do is… get revenge.”
“Huh? What kind of revenge?”
“The sweetest kind. Public humiliation.”
“Oooh, is there a plan? Do we get to be all sneaky and subterfuge-y, like when we hijacked Declan’s briefcase?”
“Calm down, Double-Oh-Tiny. I just mean that we’re gonna kick their asses in the softball game next week.”
“The what now?” Jackie asked.
“Mass Kenmore and Edenbrook play each other in a softball game every year. They won the last four years, but this year we’re gonna turn it around.”
Casey raised a brow. “And how, exactly, are you going to do that?”
“Easy! This year, Elijah and I are on the team.”
“I believe that Elijah has the strategic brain to turn a sinking ship around, but what are you bringing to the table?”
“Jackie! Jackie! Jackie. Charm, talent, and looks, of course.”
“All equally important in softball,” Casey laughed.
“You should sign up for the team. All of you. There’s still a couple of spaces open.”
“Sports aren’t my thing. I’ll have more fun cheering you on.”
Jackie slapped Bryce’s shoulder. “And I’ll have more fun laughing at you when you dive for a ball and get a face full of dirt!”
“How about you, Casey? You down to show Mass Kenmore who’s boss? And maybe show a certain doctor he ain’t all that?”
“Oh, you can so count me in! I want the astronauts on the International Space Station to see their humiliation from orbit!”
“Hell yeah,” Bryce smiled, “That’s the fight I’m looking for. Now, who’s ready to lose to me at pool?”
“I’ll take that challenge!” Sienna said jumping from her seat.
“What about you, Casey?” Elijah asked, “Want to play some darts?”
“Thanks, but I think I’m going to head home. Being with you guys was just what I needed to cheer me up, but the exhaustion just hit me.”
“Understood,“ Elijah smiled.
"You go get some rest, Tiger,” Bryce nodded. Because we’re going to get even!“
A hot shower, chamomile tea, and her favorite lavender lotion worked wonders for Casey, and she found herself in a better mindset as she strolled into her bedroom wrapped in a soft robe, a pink towel wrapped around her head. She was still hurt and confused, but she was still better than before. After slipping into her pajamas, she crawled under her covers and drifted off to sleep.
Across town, Tobias walked across his living room for what felt like the hundredth time. He bought the enormous townhome three years before. People said it was crazy to have such a large place for just one person, but he liked it. Never once had he felt lonely in it… until tonight. He cracked a beer open and stared out the window.
This is insane. This is why I never let myself care. Who needs this? I should be sitting on the couch with the game on, not a care in the world.
He eyed his phone, just a few feet away, on the cocktail table.
No. I promised her I’d give her space.
He had a win today. A huge win. Usually, he’d be out celebrating, bragging to coworkers about his victory, maybe even bringing a beautiful stranger home to "celebrate.” But he avoided his friends at work, and when they came to his office to ask where the celebration would be, he made excuses. Even though he knew Casey would be furious, the only thing he wanted to do was be with her. Now, he was lost in this strange, unfamiliar place, and didn’t even have a map.
He took his drink out to his balcony and sat down to enjoy the cool evening breeze when he felt his phone beckoning once again. He fought the urge as long as he could, but in the end, he gave in.
Casey was just about to doze off when she heard her phone vibrate. She knew she should ignore it, but curiosity got the best of her. She read his message and let out a soft sigh, and placed the phone back where she had found it.
Fifteen minutes had passed with no reply. To Tobias, that felt like an eternity.
When her phone buzzed a second time, she shot up. Staring at the message, a mixture of anger, annoyance, and… relief… overtook her.
Why did he have to do this! It felt like such a good thing.
Her thumbs began typing furiously.
Tobias took the last swig of his beer and headed upstairs to bed. When he rolled over and saw the pillow next to him, he imagined her there, just like he had many times before. He had been so close! He flung his body to the other side, laying at the edge of the mattress. His voice echoed through the empty house when he spoke out to no one at all.
“Who the hell are you, and what have you done with Tobias Carrick.”
“You have a lot to be proud of, Mrs. Hill. Stephanie’s progress has been nothing short of astounding.”
Aurora nodded, “Dr. Carrick is right, and we appreciate your sacrifices. We’re sure coming back to any hospital time and again after all these years must be difficult.”
“It’s not easy, but if we can save someone else from enduring what we have, it will have been worth it.”
Tobias smiled and nodded, “That’s the plan.”
The two doctors walked back to Tobias’s office in near silence. Aurora appeared unfazed, but Tobias’s discomfort was apparent.
“Well,” Aurora started, “I think we’ve made great headway today. We should get the results of the scans run last week for a comparison….”
“Aurora?”
“Yes.”
“Why have you been so quiet?”
“I’m talking,” she shrugged.
“Yes, but if it’s not work-related, you rarely say a word.”
“It’s better that way,” she answered confidently. “I’m happy here, and I even like you. You’re a great boss, but this little move, stealing Stephanie… you have no idea how much grief you have caused me at home. It took days to convince my friend that I had no knowledge of this. She seems to believe me now, but between her moping around the apartment and the overall tension, home no longer feels like home.”
“Wait… she’s moping?”
Aurora shook her head in disbelief, “That’s all you got from what I just said? Yeah. She’s moping. You hurt her. A lot. She’s a wonderful person, Tobias! I don’t like seeing her hurt.”
“Aurora, you have to understand, it was just….”
“Save it. I know what you did is allowable, legal even… but it is murky ethical waters, and that’s before taking your personal relationship into account. But you only hurt yourself. You may have won this battle, but you lost the war because Casey is gold. You’re not going to find anyone like her easily. I’ll tell you that!”
Tobias let out a grievous sigh as he took the seat behind his desk. “You know what? We can’t really discuss anything until the tests are back. So why don’t you go and do your rounds.”
“Of course,” Aurora sneered. “That’s what I wanted to do from the start.”
“Hey, before you go… are you going to the game tonight?”
“Yes. I signed up before all this drama started, and I keep my word once given. So I’ll be there.”
“Good,” he smiled. “I’ll see you tonight.”
Later that evening…
“Well, that wraps up my shift,” Casey smiled as she handed Maureen the last of her paperwork for the day.
“Are you going to the softball game tonight?”
“I’m playing in it,“ Casey grinned.
“You are?” Maureen questioned, “You didn’t play last year.”
“Let’s just say I have a personal vendetta now.”
Good!” Maureen exclaimed, “that’s what we need.”
“I promise to do Edenbrook proud.”
Ethan was standing nearby and overheard the conversation.
“Rookie, when you asked me if you could leave a little early today, I thought you had a good reason. Not this colossal waste of time.”
“It is not a colossal waste of time! Don’t you have any Edenbook pride?”
“Yes, and I bring acclaim and prestige to the institution through my work. Not by playing softball.”
Casey stood in front of him, her arms crossed and a smirk on her face. “Do you ever have fun, Ethan? Ever?”
“Of course I do. But we probably have very different ideas of what fun is.”
“Well, I’m off to kick Kenmore’s ass, and that will be a lot of fun.”
Ethan grinned despite himself. “You do that, Casey; good luck. Oh, and if you get injured and think of calling out tomorrow, I’ll throw you off the team.”
“You’re all talk, Ramsey!” She winked as she walked down the hall.
When she reached the locker room, Bryce and Elijah were in a heated conversation.
“What do you mean he went home?”
“He just sent me a text! He says a hospital bed got wheeled over his foot. He can’t put any weight on it.”
“Let me guess,” Casey said as she sauntered over, “we’re down a teammate.”
“And we have less than an hour to find someone who doesn’t suck!” Bryce hollered.
Casey gently nudged her friend’s shoulder. “Keep your voice down, Lahela! Follow me. I have a plan.
“Absolutely not.”
“Please, Dr. Ramsey,” Elijah pleaded, “we need you.”
“Give me one good reason why I should spend my private time dressed in a cheap uniform surrounded by people I avoid when I’m paid to be around them.”
“Because you can help me exact revenge on Tobias Carrick.”
He looked at Casey warily over his glasses. “Is this why you’re doing this, MacTavish?”
“Yes. I am currently living to see him scowling in the dugout as I do a victory dance on the field.”
Living for it?”
“Yes, living for it.”
“A bit extreme,” he said, removing his glasses, “but kicking Carrick’s ass in any possible way is always appealing. Against my better judgment, count me in.”
"I knew I could count on you!” Casey grinned.
Bryce and Elijah made their way to Ethan’s desk, whooping and hollering in search of a high five. Casey stood next to Ethan, looking at the two defiantly.
“Do you want him to change his mind? Go, go, get out of here! You have a game to prep for.”
Tobias whistled as he buttoned his jersey, tucking it into his pants. Placing the cap on his head, he gazed into the mirror and adjusted the brim until it was just right.
“There you go, Carrick,” he said to his reflection, “ready to bring your A-game!”
It was the first time he felt levity at all in over a week, and it felt good. But as he packed his bag, that grey cloud started forming above him again. He caught a glimpse at the roster earlier in the day. Lahela was the team captain this year, so there was a good chance Casey would be in the stands. He wanted to see her desperately, but the thought of another rejection wasn’t appealing. His thoughts were interrupted when his phone began to ring.
“Kerry, what’s up, darling?”
“Not you, I hear.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I’m talking about Sasha sending me an SOS. She said you, Mr. Sunshine himself, has been walking around the hospital like someone pissed in your coffee. What gives?”
“And Sasha couldn’t have asked me this herself?”
“Nope. She works in the same building as you. I have a nice four-hundred-mile buffer. It makes sense for me to call. So, spill.”
“Nothing is wrong.”
“OK. I’ll just call your mother,” Kerry said, her thumb already on end.
“No! No! Ker, I’ll tell you anything you want to know. Just don’t… don’t do that.”
“I love having that ace in the hole,“ she sang. "Now get talking, because I do have her on speed dial.”
Letting out a deep sigh, Tobias fell back into his plush sofa. It was no wonder why Sasha called Kerry call; even without his mother as a secret weapon, she knew how to get him to talk. Being friends for over three decades left her a pro, and he knew he couldn’t lie to her. She’s see-through him four hundred miles away.
“Her name is Casey. Casey MacTavish.”
“And what, is she suing you or something?”
“No! We weren’t official, so I can’t say she dumped me. But she sort of dumped me….”
“Wait. Are you telling me that the Tobias Carrick has been walking around Mass Kenmore despondent enough for the bat lights to go on… because of a woman turning him away? Don’t you have another on the side? Or at least one or two waiting in the wings? Are you losing your touch?”
“You know,“ he scowled. "I could hang up this phone right now.”
“And I could call Vivian as soon as you do. Don’t act like what I’m saying is so far-fetched. I know you, and I love you despite the pathetic behavior you exhibit at times.”
“I don’t know what to say, Ker. She… she got under my skin… I really care about her.”
The line appeared to go dead.
“Ker? You there?”
“I’m here. I’m just stunned into silence.”
“Very funny.”
“I’m serious. So tell me about her?”
“She’s amazing. I first met her in a deli, and she was just so beautiful. I couldn’t get her out of my head. So I tracked her down….”
“Of course you did.”
“Can I continue?”
“Please.”
“Anyway, I got to know her, and she’s so much more than a pretty face. She is brilliant, a doctor at Edenbrook. She’s witty, always has some wiseass comeback, and keeps me on my toes. She’s got this huge heart and a smile that could light up the city. When I"m with her… I can’t even describe how I feel.“
“Jesus, T.”
I know. Do you know how much I mean this shit? After our first date, I called off every fling I had. I didn’t even know why. It’s not as if we made things official. But I only wanted her.”
“OK, so this is a first. But, what did you do to fuck it up?”
“Why do you assume….”
“T?”
“Alright,” he groaned, “It was me. I fucked up.”
He relayed how he stole Stephanie from Edenbrook. How he didn’t see it as wrong at first, but he can see her point now. Though it could be too late, she won’t even talk to him.
“And you didn’t even give her a heads up about it?”
“No.”
Tobias knew Kerry well. He could picture her, her head resting on her hand, massaging her temple furiously as she tried to calm down. Tobias tended to have this effect on her. He drove her crazy, but she still adored him.
“Why didn’t you call me for advice? On all of it! You’re falling for someone? You know damn well you’re not equipt to do that on your own.”
“Equipt? I assure you my equipment is….”
“Oh, Jesus, T! Not that!”
“When have I ever needed help with women?”
“WoMEN. Plural. Sure, you can be Mr. Playboy, but the real thing? What the hell do you know about that. Do you want her back?”
“Desperately,” slipped from his lips before he had a chance to formulate a reply.
“Then I have my work cut out for me. We’ll need to talk more. I’m going to need a few days to digest and plan. Maybe consult with Sasha.”
“What?”
“Reforming you? This is too big of a job for me alone.”
“I can’t believe this.”
“Well, I can’t believe ninety percent of this conversation, so we’re even. Can we talk this weekend?”
“Sure.”
“And before you go, is there anything else I need to know? Any other stupid things that you need to atone for?“
“No! Don’t you have any faith in me?”
“I plead the fifth. Just respect her request for time. Leave her be, Tobias. We’ll talk Saturday.”
“OK, love ya, Ker.”
“Love you too, even if you give me more gray hairs than my kids do.”
Casey and the others followed the smell of hot dogs to a nearby park. Staff from both hospitals were already there, hot dogs and beers in hand. Of course, the first person they bumped into was Tobias. Casey was in the back of the group, so he didn’t see her right away, though Ethan was impossible to miss.
“Ethan. My God. You are the  last  person I expected to see here tonight.”
“Worried?” Ethan asked.
“Thrilled. This will make the victory that much sweeter.”
“I wouldn’t count on that,” Casey taunted. Walking up from the back, she stood next to Ethan. “I wouldn’t count on victory or any form of sweetness tonight, Dr. Carrick.”
“Fiesty, are we?” He smiled, hoping she’d offer one in return. Instead, she crossed her arms and scowled.
“Not feisty, determined. We’ll see you out on the field,” she sneered as she led the other players away.
“I don’t like that guy,” Bryce stated. He has that attitude that just makes you want to….” he faltered, looking for the right words.
“Punch him in the face and make all that money he spent on veneers a waste?” Ethan replied.
Everyone chuckled, surprised to see this side of Ethan. Casey played along, but her sad smile showed the evening was proving to be more difficult than she anticipated.
“That would work!” Bryce replied, “Casey! Do you want me to kick his ass? Because I’ll gladly kick his ass for you?”
“You look entirely too cheerful while saying that, Bryce?”
He shrugged, “Anything for a friend.”
“Well, thanks. But I’ll take care of kicking his ass on the field. I am going to hit a grand slam home run off of him if it is the last thing I do.”
“That’s the way to do it, Case!” Elijah encouraged.
“Casey,” Ethan said gravely.
She rolled her eyes before turning to face him, expecting a lecture about professionalism or some other crap she didn’t want to hear right now.
“Yes, Ethan.”
“If you can pull that off, I will personally guarantee you a raise and a permanent position on the diagnostic team.”
“Really? I just wanted to kick his ass for fun. Now, I have a stake in this!”
A little later, Naveen’s voice echoed across the park as he opened the games and would up his arm to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
“Good luck, guys!” Sienna yelled from the stands as the rest of the crowd joined in.
Casey waved at her friends in the bleachers and headed out to the diamond.
“You ready for this, Ethan?” Tobias taunted.
Casey’s face went red. Really, this is what he’s concerned about right now! Maybe the only reason he wanted her was his rediculous competition with Ethan.
“Obviously,” Ethan deadpanned, earning a small chuckle from Casey.
The referee called attention, “Home team alternates years, so this year, it’s Edenbrook. Kenmore will bat first.”
Aurora glanced at Casey, “Good luck out there.”
“Worry about yourself, Emery,” Casey teased.
“Hey, hey, hey! No fraternizing with the enemy!” Tobias scolded.
“Oh, so I’m the enemy now?” Casey retorted. “Good to know.”
Ah, fuck! Tobias thought. He was just trying to be funny.
Kerry’s right. I don’t know what the fuck I am doing.
Casey got into position as shortstop, standing near Bryce.
“You ready, Case?” he yelled, grinning that mega-watt smile.
“Hell yeah. Let’s kick some ass, Lahela!”
Casey looked over her shoulder and laughed at Ethan, standing with his arms crossed in the outfield.
“Are you having fun yet, Ethan?”
“Let’s just get this over with. The sooner we kick their ass, the sooner I can go home.”
Elijah was on the pitching mound, and Tobias was the first at bat.
“Come on, Elijah. Get this one out for me!” Casey yelled. Tobias turned, and their eyes met; she couldn’t tell if it was anger, irritation, or sadness in his eyes. In truth, it was a combination of all three.
Elijah fired a fastball at Tobias… He swings. With a grunt and a loud smack, the call connected hard with the bat and hurtled through the air… directly into Bryce’s glove.
“Wooooh!” Casey yelled, running over for a quick hug.
“Hey, there’s no hugs in baseball!”
“That’s crying, Bryce. There’s no crying in baseball.”
“Good, because I like the hugs,” he winked. “GAME ON!”
Aurora was up next, frowning in complete concentration. A moment later, the ball met her bat with a crack. It popped up, dropping into shallow center.
“Run, Aurora!” Landry yelled from the sidelines. Casey’s hair stood on edge at the sound of his voice. If Carrick wasn’t reason enough to humiliate Kenmore today, she had him to contend with too.
“Go, go, go!!!” Tobias yelled.
Aurora charged around the diamond. Ethan sprinted forward, scooping up the ball. In one fluid motion, he rocketed it toward Casey as Aurora rounded second base. Casey lunged with one foot on the base, stretching to keep her back foot on the base and snag the ball a split-second before Aurora reached the bag.
“You’rrrrre out!” the ref yelled.
“Crap! You got me, Casey,” Aurora sighed.
“Hell of a catch!” Ethan smiled.
“I’m going for that raise, big guy!” She grinned back.
The game sped by. Both teams performed so well the runs sat neck and neck at the end of every inning.
“Time for a break,” the ref yelled, “We start again in ten minutes.”
Casey stretched and made her way over to the coolers. Most were ravaged by this time, but there were still a few bottles of beer floating around. She grabbed one and gulped it down when she saw Tobias jogging her way.
“Hey,” he smiled.
“Tobias,” she nodded, trying to appear as if he had no effect on her.
You sure you wanna risk clouding your judgment? We still have two innings to go, and you’re looking good out there.”
She wiped her mouth, watching him as he grabbed a bottle of water.
“You could have had one of these,” he smiled. “Probably a healthier choice.”
“If I was about healthier choices today, I would have walked away the second I saw you heading this way.”
“Yet, you didn’t,” he smirked.
“Don’t flatter yourself, Carrick. I’m just not about to let you impact my day.”
“That’s too bad because you certainly impact mine.”
She shook her head and chuckled ruefully, “Is this how you give me space? There is a park full of people you could have entertained yourself with. So much for respecting my wishes.”
She started to walk away, and he instinctively grabbed her wrist. “Casey…”
“Don’t touch me,” she yelled, pulling it away as others began to take notice.
“I’m sorry, Case, I didn’t mean to….”
Ethan ran over at once. “What the hell is going on over here?”
“Relax, pal,” Tobias snapped, he wanted to retain his cool, especially for Casey’s sake, but this was Ramsey. “I was just talking to her.”
“Yeah, well, if she doesn’t want to be talked to, I strongly suggest you leave her alone,” Bryce hollered.
“And you most certainly will not put a hand on her,” Ethan said through gritted teeth.
“Oh, come on, Ethan! Stop trying to look like the big hero defending Casey when there is nothing to protect her from!”
“With you around, Carrick, there is certainly something to protect her from.”
“OK! Testosterone time is over!” Casey huffed. “Can we just get back to the game where poor little me will be safe? The sarcasm dripped off of her words.
Hearing the commotion, another Kenmore doctor ran over, and several others trailed behind him.
“What’s going on over here?”
“Nothing’s going on. Everyone, relax,” Casey implored.
But it was too late. The entire game had been a tinderbox waiting to explode, and they just found the spark they needed.
“I’m telling you this once more, Carrick. Stay the hell away from my resident.”
“Ethan! Stop,” Casey injected. “I can take care of….”
“Or what?” Tobias seethed. “She’s a big girl, Ethan. Who are you to decide who she does, or does not, speak to.”
“From what I understand, she already told you she doesn’t want to speak to you, but you can’t seem to respect that.”
“Ethan, relax,” the other Kenmore doctor taunted, “We’re not some pharma execs you can slug in the face.
“Yeah, Ethan. Let’s not throw around threats we both know you won’t follow through on,” Tobias goaded.
“Just give me one excuse!”
Players and spectators from both hospitals were now crowded around them, unleashing a storm of jeers, insults, and vicious talk until the ref yelled, “Game on.”
“Not soon enough!” Casey huffed, glaring at Tobias as she passed him. “Hell of a way to win me back.”
His shoulders dropped as he let out a sigh, “I’m sorry. It’s just that when me and Ramsey….”
“Save it. You’re a grown man, and you both should have behaved better. Now, I have a game to get back to.”
Tobias watched Casey march back to the field remorsefully. “Goddamn, Carrick,” he said out loud. Kerry was right, she had her work cut out for her.
The sun had gone down, and there was a distinct change of energy as the game resumed. Both teams were focused on winning. The goodwill and playful rivalry of the first several innings was dead in the water.
“Go, Newman! Dammit, run like you mean it!” Bryce yelled.
“We can’t afford any more screw-ups!” Tobias hissed.
By the bottom of the last inning, Kenmore was up two runs.
“We’re going to win this thing!” Landry yelled, “We only need one more out!”
Casey seethed at the sound of his voice. “You’re not winning shit!” she said to her teammates. “Bryce, go out there and hit one to the moon!”
“On it, my friend,” he winked.
Bryce sent a grounder skipping past Landry at the plate, and Lahela made it to first base, advancing Ethan to second.
“Crap! I’m up!” Casey gasped. Her nerves were suddenly getting the better of her.
Elijah tried to reassure her. “Hey, don’t sweat it, Case! You got this! This is what you wanted. Walk off home run, shut them all the hell up!”
“Yeah, and didn’t Ramsey say something about a raise and a permanent position?” Newman laughed.
She grabbed a bat and walked up to the batter’s plate.
“Focus, MacTavish,” Ethan yelled.
“You got this!” Bryce yelled from first, “Keep us alive.”
She let out a deep breath and held the bat. Clenching her teeth as she stared down Tobias on the pitching mound.
“Mess them up, Casey!” Jackie yelled.
She gripped the bat as Tobias smirked. He gave it everything he had.
CRACK! The ball sailed into the night sky, arching higher… farther…
Landry stumbled backward to the warning track.
“I got it… I got it….”
He lept at the fence… but it was too high! The ball streaked over the wall for a home run!
“Oh my God!” Casey screamed.
Tobias threw his mitt to the ground. A string of expletives were about to escape him, but then he saw her, still standing at the batter’s plate, jumping up as pure joy washed over her. He looked in her direction and tipped his hat with a grin. “Good job,” he mouthed to the horror of his teammates.
“Case! Baby! You gotta run the bases for it to count,” Bryce laughed.
“Oh, I know that!” she laughed. She threw her bat to the side, narrowly missing Landry, then she trotted around the bases to wild cheers. As she stepped on home plate, she was engulfed by her teammates and friends.
“Walk-off three-run homer, are you serious? Casey, You’re going to be on the local sports news tonight.” Bryce beamed.
Ethan pat her back, “That was worth being dragged down here, MacTavish.”
“Hey, didn’t you say something about a raise and permanent position?”
“Yeah, if you got a walk-off grand slam. You needed one more run for that,” he winked as he grabbed his bag and made his way out of the dugout.
“That’s a technicality!!” Casey yelled after him. “That jerk!”
A short while later, the crowds had mostly dispersed, and Casey was packing her equipment in a duffel bag. Across the field, Tobias never took his eyes off her. The Kenmore team was getting ready to visit a local watering hole. Drowning their sorrows was in order.
“Hey, you guys,” Tobias announced, “go ahead. I’ll catch you there.”
Casey just threw her bag over her shoulder when she sensed someone behind her.
“Tobias,” she said without turning around.
“How’d you know?”
She turned around and shrugged, “I just did. What do you want?”
“I wanted to congratulate you. Is there anything you can’t do?”
“Oh, there is plenty I can’t do,” she chortled, “but be honest, you would have rather struck me out.”
His heart began to race. Yeah, she seemed annoyed, but at least she wasn’t running away.
“I would have loved to have done that to any player on your team… except you. So I’m fine with the outcome.”
Casey’s face softened just a bit, and her shoulders dropped as her tension diminished. Seeing this, Tobias was encouraged enough to ask.
“Hey, I’m supposed to join the team at Riley’s Pub….”
“Yeah, that’s what your team wants. Me there as they are mourn how I kicked their asses.”
“That’s not what I was going to ask,” he grinned.
“Oh?”
“I’m supposed to go with them, but if you want to, we could go somewhere else. Just as friends Case. Maybe we could start over?”
Casey tilted her head as she looked over at him. His eyes twinkled brighter than the stars above, a tender half-smile accentuating the dimples on his face. She was upset with herself because, goddamn, if she wasn’t enticed. Tobias could see she was battling herself, and he was eager to persuade her.
“Please….” he pleaded.
Casey tilted her head, “Tobias, part of me really wants to, but I can’t.”
She saw him deflate visibly at her words.
“I meant it when I said I need time.”
“OK. I’m sorry. I’ve just…. I’ve missed you and Casey, I never miss anyone. You don’t have to believe me, but this is all new to me, and I’m bound to fuck up. Just like I did with Stephanie, I just….”
“Yeah, I’m still not quite over that.”
“Nor should you be. But maybe, when you’re ready, we can talk about it?”
Casey twisted her lips as she leaned on the railing in the dugout. “Fine. But again, it’s on my time. Because God help me, I’ve missed you too.”
She couldn’t help but be touched by the enormous smile that spontaneously appeared on his face.
“OK, time. I did promise you that, and I haven’t lived up to it. But I will. I swear, I will. You’re worth waiting for.”
“Good. Now follow through. Good night, Tobias,” she smiled before slowly walking away.
“Goodnight, Casey.”
“Hey,” the last of his teammates said, tapping him on the shoulder. “You coming?”
“You know what, I’m going to sit this one out. I really need to go home and phone an old friend.”
Chapter Text
Their Start Series Masterlist
In the next few chapters, some original characters will begin to appear. I’d like to give you a little background on each to enhance the story. There will be some other OC’s added down the line, I will add them as they enter the story.
See character information below the break.
Kerry Chadwick
  • The Chadwick’s and Carrick’s, both affluent families residing in Washington DC, have been friends since the children were toddlers.
  • Tobias & Kerry are best friends. They don’t remember a time when they were not in each other’s lives.
  • They dated for one year in high school, but felt they were too young to be serious, and also realized they were better as friends. (More on their relationship here.)
  • Kerry is an attorney who still lives in Washington DC. She is one year younger than Tobias (35 when the story begins), and she is married with two children, Brenda, 5, and Aiden, 3. Tobias is Aiden’s godfather.
  • Kerry loves Tobias dearly, but she often does not approve of his antics. She is elated when he shows signs of finally “growing up.”
  • She’s upbeat, funny and full of life. Her marriage is shaky as her husband, Kendrick, is away on business very often.
  • She and Sasha try to help him when he falls for Casey.
  • Faceclaim: Jessica Alba.
Sasha Carlson
  • Sasha and Tobias met at Kenmore when he was in his 2nd year of residency and she just started as a hospital administrator.
  • They began dating and she was the closest he came to having a real relationship. But…. he didn’t do well at it. He didn’t love her (in that way) and he realized being in a committed relationship was not for him. (More on the relationship here.)
  • He felt awful about the break-up because Sasha was amazing, he just wanted a different life. Sasha really loved him the breakup was hard.
  • They did not become friends until years later, when Sasha was already involved with her now-husband, Ian. But the friendship grew and they’re very close now.
  • Kerry met her a few times when she visited Tobias in Boston, and the two women became close friends.
  • These are the only two significant friendships Tobias has. The women often tag team against him when he does stupid things, which is often.
  • She is smart, sophisticated, and to the point. She is 34 at the start of the series. She does not have (nor want) children.
  • She and Kerry try to help him when he falls for Casey.
  • Faceclaim: Rosario Dawson.
Vivian Carrick
  • Vivian is quite a character. She is smart, witty, she knows what she wants and she is not shy about getting it.
  • She can be intimidating until you get to know her, but then you see she truly has a heart of gold. If she loves you, she’d do anything for you.
  • She loves Tobias and they have a good relationship, except for being angry at him for not settling down and providing her with grandchildren.
  • She is a retired art teacher and an artist. She does not need to work, as the Carrick’s are very wealthy and, when her husband died, she inherited most of the estate.
  • She travels a lot and she has boyfriends for short periods of time. But she and her husband, Charles, had a love for the ages and she never wants to replace him.
  • She is active in the DC social scene, is very connected, loves hosting events, and fights for causes she believes in.
  • Faceclaim: Alfre Woodard.
Rose & David MacTavish
Rose & David are Casey’s parents, and more information will be provided to them when they enter the story.
She was running earlier than usual. While that used to be an oddity, Casey was now making a deliberate effort to take better care of herself, and getting up earlier was part of that plan. But given the early hour, she was surprised to see the lights already on in the diagnostic team’s office. Ethan was usually there at the crack of dawn, but he had an exceptionally late night and texted the team he’d be late and that they should begin the day without him. So her curiosity was piqued.
When she entered the office, she found June sitting behind Ethan’s desk. The other doctor was so deeply immersed in her work that she only looked up when Casey, graceful as ever, tripped, nearly spilling her coffee all over.
“Quick save,” June smirked.
“Thank goodness!” Casey exclaimed. “I spent too much time putting this outfit together to be forced to head to the locker room and trade it in for scrubs.”
“It is lovely,” June replied, eyeing the form-fitting black pencil skirt and alluring cerulean silk blouse that peeked out from under her lab coat. “Who are we trying to impress?”
Casey shot June a disbelieving look.
“June, you’re an enlightened woman. You know we dress to make ourselves feel good. I’m not attempting to impress anyone.”
“True,” June smirked, swirling out of the chair to join Casey at the conference table, “but every now and again, it’s fun to make some fool out of their mind crazy.”
“Hmm,” Casey answered, not terribly interested in the conversation, “well, I’m just doing it for me.”
They continued to work quietly until Casey groaned in disgust. June’s eyes lifted, and she silently questioned the disruption. Casey tossed a newly arrived journal she was toward June in response.
“Ah,” June sighed, “Stephanie’s case made the cover! It is getting a lot of attention… which isn’t surprising.”
“Yeah. At least she seems to be progressing well. In the end, that’s all that matters.”
“I guess,” June answered dismissively. “Dr. Carrick is a fairly good doctor, but I, for one, believe she would have been far better off at Edenbrook.”
“Do you really think it would have been better for her? Or do you think it would have been better for us?”
“The two don’t have to be mutually exclusive, Casey. You still have a lot to learn.“
Her words pulled her back to her words with Tobias, ”You’re still a resident… this is how things are done.“ She was tired of being treated like a naive fool because she had integrity, but an argument with June right now wouldn’t benefit anyone. Forcing a smile, she returned to her work, but June had other plans.
“You know, it’s unfortunate that you had to learn about the game in such a… difficult way.”
“Excuse me?”
“Dr. Carrick. Stealing Stephanie, that must have been hard given your… connection.”
Casey looked up, expecting to see a smug expression on June’s face, but it was business as usual for her.
“I have no connection with Dr. Carrick, June. And I’d rather end this conversation.”
“Casey, it’s OK. Tobias is a charming man, that’s just one of his good qualities,” she looked at Casey with a smirk and raised brow. “But we both know that, don’t we.”
Casey could feel her temperature rising. Some knew better than others and in this room that someone wasn’t her. The average person would have been fooled by Casey’s cool demeanor, but June wasn’t the average person. She had picked up on every tick Casey offered, and now she was ready to set her agenda in motion.
I heard something from a little birdie I know over at Mass Kenmore. Something that might let us turn the tables on them for stealing our patient.” A satisfied smirk was on June’s lips when Casey lifted her head from her reading, curiosity piqued. “After all, sometimes a little revenge can do wonders to soothe the soul.”
“Oh, what news did this little birdie share?”
Ed Farrugia, the Massachusetts senator, was admitted to Mass Kenmore yesterday with a mystery illness.”
“Farrugia? Isn’t he the one everyone expects to throw his hat in for president in the next election?”
The very same. In fact, my source informs me that Tobias is treating him personally.”
“Oh, is he now? I’m sure he’s feeling pretty smug about that.”
Exactly. Wrenching his prize patient away from him would certainly be one way to topple his ego.”
“It sure would. So, would you be in with me if I decide to pursue this?”
“What do you have in mind, Casey?”
“A covert mission, of sorts. We should pay Sen. Farrugia a visit. I know about his background, and I think we could convince him that Edenbrook would be much better suited for his needs, healthcare, and political. Interested?”
I’d love to. But I’m swamped with patients today; there’s no way I can get away. But you should check in with Ethan. He has privileges at Kenmore. He could get you in there.”
“Oh, sure,” Casey laughed. “Ethan embarking on something like this. Not very likely, June, and you know it.”
“I know no such thing,” she deadpanned. “You’re capable of far more than you give yourself credit for, Casey. Especially with Ethan. He’s always had a soft spot for you.”
“He doesn’t have a….”
June silenced her with one look.
“Do you know how many years I’ve been at Edenbrook? I’ve seen Dr. Stoneface don a polyester uniform to take on Mass Kenmore exactly once. I wonder who asked him?”
“Well, that had more to do with exacting revenge against Tobias than it did me.”
“And what would you be asking him to do now,” June winked. “I have full faith in you, Dr. MacTavish.”
_____
Two hours later:
Casey’s was trying not to stand out in the oversized Mass Kenmore lab coat Ethan had given her. It was his spare, so it was huge on her. She was hoping that it wouldn’t draw attention in their direction. Then again, Ethan’s constant muttering would probably do that all on his own.
“I don’t know how I let you talk me into this.”
“Well, I did, so… look more natural!”
“Says the woman who has readjusted that coat sleeve for the hundredth time.”
Casey’s heart raced as they reached the reception desk, but she watched Ethan work with finesse, getting them both past security with ease.
“Damn, I’m impressed,” she grinned as they made their way to the elevator.
“As well you should be.”
“Ah, and your ego is still intact, I see. Thank God, I was worried. Now let’s see if your winning streak continues. Do you have any idea where Mass Kenmore would keep a senator?”
“Well, they have a VIP wing….”
“You’re kidding me?”
“I am not. There’s more than one reason I despise this place.”
“That gives us an in, Ethan! Farrugia is progressive. He’s for the people and wants to be seen as everyone’s representative. Edenbrook’s principles are far more in line with his, and it would be a much better look to be there with a presidential bid on the table.”
“Oh, and here I was foolishly thinking we would lure him based on our medical expertise and quality of care. I mean, who wouldn’t want us above Carri….” Remembering Casey was still hurt over what had happened, he cut himself short.
“Carrick. You can say it, Ethan. It’s OK.”
“I didn’t mean to….”
“I know,” Casey smiled as the elevator doors opened, “But look, what happened, happened. Maybe Tobias was right, maybe this is just the way the game is played.“
"Tell me you’re not serious,” he grumbled.
“Not really,” she sighed. “I hate and I hate that he did it to me, but look at me and what I’m doing now.”
“It’s not too late to turn around?” Ethan asked.
Casey looked to the ceiling, weighing her options she returned her gaze to Ethan with a look of determination.
“We came here for a reason. Let’s do what we’re here to do and leave. I don’t want to be here a second longer than we have to be. So, how do we do this?” Casey asked.
“Nice, MacTavish. You get me into this mess, and now you need me to bail you out.”
“Could you maybe not right now?”
“I’m just joking,” he smiled. “Stay here and look useful. I’m going to sweet talk that nurse. She’s had a crush on me for years. It should be easy.”
“Ah, use the good looks and charm, Dr. Ramsey.”
“Whatever it takes.”
Moments later, Ethan returned with a shit-eating grin on his face and a room number on his lips.
“734.”
“Have I ever told you that you’re brilliant!” Casey gushed.
“Yes, but I don’t tire of hearing it.”
Casey smiled with a roll of her eyes. “Let’s just do this.”
They were strolling down the corridor with determination in their steps when suddenly….
Ethan ?”
Casey’s heart stopped at the sound of that familiar voice behind her. Ethan’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“He only saw me at this point. Keep going. I’ll keep him busy.”
Ethan turned to face Tobias with a look of disgust. Casey couldn’t help but hear their barreling voices as she hastily tried to get away.
“Come to see what a real hospital looks like, Ramsey?”
“Is it really a hospital if there are no qualified doctors working there?”
“Jealousy doesn’t look good on you, Ethan… Oh, who am I kidding? It definitely does.”
Casey shook her head. Someday she’d have to learn what the real deal was between those two and address why she was so attracted to egomaniacs, but today wasn’t that day. She was angry with herself as she roamed through the halls because, despite everything, Tobias’s voice still had an impact on her. In recent days her head had been spinning with ways to rationalize his behavior, but luckily common sense always prevailed. And right now, common sense told her to focus. After all, she had a patient to poach, and even if she still had a small soft spot for Tobias, the thought of wiping that smug grin off of his face brought her closer to climaxing than he ever got the chance to provide.
734.
She hadn’t anticipated doing this on her own, but she was determined. She just wished she didn’t feel like a child playing dress up in the shifting lab coat, but she wasn’t letting that stop her. Adjusting it one last time and smoothing the front of her skirt, she took a deep breath. "It’s showtime.”
Sen. Farrugia and his aide’s eyes were on Casey the moment the door opened. Both perplexed, having never seen her before.
“Do you have the latest results, doctor?” Farrugia asked, “You don’t look familiar. Has Dr. Carrick added you to my team?”
Casey’s eyes darted back and forth between the two men. She had to think quickly.
“Senator, my name is Casey MacTavish, and I’m not your doctor. I don’t even work here. I’m a resident at Edenbrook Hospital.”
“I beg your pardon?” the Senator demanded.
His aide already had his phone in hand.
“I’m calling security.”
“No!” Casey exclaimed, “Please, just hear me out, Senator. I’m here to pitch our services to you.”
Realizing she was not a threat and impressed with her gumption, Farrugia waved his hand at his aide.
Travis put down the phone. I’m officially intrigued. Let’s hear Dr. MacTavish out.”
“Yes, Senator.”
“Go on, Doctor. Tell me about Edenbrook.”
“I believe you’ll find we are much more closely aligned with your political values. For example, you’re on a floor solely for VIP patients right now. Your whole platform is about being one of the people, and Edenbrook exemplifies that ideal.”
“Continue….”
“In addition to treating each patient equally, we run a community clinic that’s in danger of closing due to budget cutbacks. If you were treated with us, imagine what you could do for our clinic  and  your image.”
“It’s important for me to walk the walk, Dr. MacTavish. But my case is stumping every doctor I meet. So there is more at stake here.”
“Then you’re definitely in the wrong place. As our state senator, you already know Edenbrook is one of the best hospitals in the nation. But its diagnostic team is among the best in the world. Sure, Dr. Carrick has an excellent reputation… as a physician. But Dr. Ramsey literally wrote the book on modern diagnostic care. I am merely a junior fellow on the team, but I cracked Dr. Banerji’s case when no one else could.“
The senator’s eyes widened. "That was you?”
“Yes. And I promise to work relentlessly to get to the bottom of what ails you, and I know our entire team would do the same. I think it deserves your consideration.”
The senator rubbed his beard thoughtfully before looking back at her with a twinkle in his eye.
"A solid pitch. In fact…go back to Edenbrook and prepare me a room. I’ll be along as soon as I can get myself discharged.”
Casey was beaming with satisfaction. “You won’t be disappointed, Senator.”
As Casey and Travis discussed the senator’s transfer logistics, she was becoming increasingly distracted by the incessant pinging of a cell phone.
“I’m sorry, Travis. Could you possibly silence your phone?”
“I wish. It’s not mine,” he said, motioning toward the offending device. “His doctor left that damn thing behind, and its’ been going off non-stop.”
“Dr. Carrick?” she asked with a raised brow.
“Yeah, I’m surprised he hasn’t been back for it already. Aren’t we supposed to have those things glued to our hips these days?”
"Yeah,” Casey chuckled, certain Ethan showing up at his hospital had Tobias completely off his game. “But who knows what distractions came his way. In any case, I’m turning his ringer off.”
She lifted the phone into her hand, lingering for a moment to read the notifications that kept coming in.
What the hell… June!
…Looks like this evening’s plans are going to be…
…Trust me. I’ve got everything covered…
…Plus, I’ve been dying to show you something…
Casey felt her heart sink to her stomach, and her skin went cold. He told her he and June had a thing… in the past… but… now…
Are they working together? Is he sleeping with her while begging for another chance with me? Was he with her this whole time? Am I a pawn in their game?
Fury and rage were building inside her as her mind spun out of control.
“Dr. MacTavish? Dr. MacTavish, is everything OK?”
Luckily the sound of Travis’s voice brought her back to the present, and she was more determined than ever to exact her revenge on Tobias. She’d deal with June later.
“Oh, yes, Travis. Everything is fine. I’m going to head back to Edenbrook and make sure everything is just perfect for the Senator when he arrives.” She turned to Farrugia with a warm smile, “I promise you, you won’t regret it.”
Casey collapsed against the door as soon as she exited the room. Mission accomplished, and the victory felt far more delicious than she had anticipated. She didn’t know what game Tobias & June were playing, but she was going to find out. She pulled out her phone and texted Ethan.
… Mission accomplished! Meet me out front. I can’t wait to get out of this cesspool…
… Excellent! Now you’re talking my language. I’m on my way…
Casey walked quickly, her high heels clanking against the marble floor in the lobby. The front doors were in sight when she heard the voice again.
“Casey?”
Her face went pale when she turned around and saw Tobias several yards away. He smiled softly, but it quickly faltered. Casey turned on her heel and showed Tobias just how fast a girl from Philly can run in discount, designer high heels.
“Son of a…” he cursed under his breath, “I knew Ethan was up to something! Case! Wait, wait… come back here….”
He ran after her to no avail. She was not going to be caught. Ethan’s car was zooming up to the entrance when she stepped outside. He stomped on the brakes and flung the passenger door open.
“Need a ride?” he grinned.
“This is just like a movie!” she smiled.
“Bonnie and Clyde ride again,” he laughed.
“Yes! Now, hit it!”
Ethan slammed his foot on the accelerator, leaving Tobias in the dust. Casey looked out the back window, expecting to see him furious, but instead, he was shaking his head and laughing.
“Well played,” she heard him yell as they made their escape, “well played!”
Casey sunk back into the passenger seat, her mood beginning to shift lower. Played. Despite the victory, that’s exactly what she felt right now. Played.
_____
Later that evening, Casey sat at the conference table, wrapping up paperwork for Farrugia’s transfer. She did not lift her head when the door opened.
“Ed Farrugia’s been assigned to the team!” June’s jubilant voice called out. “I’m impressed.”
Casey’s mind returned to the texts she had seen on Tobias’s phone. The hours of work she had put in to push those images aside were washed away in an instant.
“Um, hellooo. Dr. MacTavish? I just told you I’m impressed. I’m  never  impressed.”
“June, what the hell is your game?”
Her colleague’s demeanor changed in an instant.
“Excuse me?”
“I saw your texts to Tobias while I was at Kenmore today. I don’t know what the hell you two are up to, and I honestly don’t care, but I want no part of it.”
“It’s not what you think, Casey.”
“Really? You may be a behavioral psychologist, June, but I assure you, you have no idea what I am thinking right now.”
“You want to know if I’m sleeping with him?”
Casey met June with an icy stare, believing she was hiding the anger and hurt she was feeling inside. Still, she was sure June read her like a book when she saw the corners of her lips curl ever so slightly.
“Who you or Tobias sleep with is none of my concern. In fact, you should be together, you two deserve each other.”
“Casey, settle down. I’m going to give you some advice, professional woman to professional woman. You appear to be the type who needs a man in your life. Now, I don’t understand that construct, and I certainly don’t encourage it, but if that’s who you are, you need to change your game. If a long-term commitment and a permanent date for family functions is your goal, you’ll want to start looking at more suitable choices. Ramsey? Carrick? Sure, they’re both successful, quite easy on the eyes, and I can confirm that at least one of them is quite good in bed… but they’re never going to fulfill those needs. But you’re a bright young woman. I’m sure you already know that.”
“You know,” Casey said with a huff. “I’m beginning to wonder what benefit you bring to our team.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“If that’s your assessment of me, then your psychological degree should be revoked. And, to be clear, my life outside of these walls is none of your concern. Today marks the first and last time I will be used by you for whatever head games you’re playing. Do I make myself clear?”
“I only play games to win, Casey. My loyalty is to me, and today was a win. Farrugia will be here in the morning. That benefits Edenbrook, and that benefits me.” June picked up her things and started toward the office door. “Now, I have plans for this evening. Why don’t you wrap up and go home? Make some plans of your own. After such a long day. I’m sure it would help.”
_____
Casey had the apartment to herself; a box of pizza and a bottle of wine were her only companions, and she didn’t like it. She picked both up on the way home, partially a reward for her big win today and partially a salve to soothe her. She was still reeling from what she saw on Tobias’s phone. She stopped herself from calling him several times today. The petty side of her was eager to rub his face in stealing the senator. Plus, she just wanted to let him know that she knew about June. That he wasn’t as clever as he gave himself credit for. He hadn’t gotten over on her. At least, he wasn’t any longer.
But then she remembered he had “plans” this evening, just like June. She felt hot tears welling up in her eyes, and she cursed herself for allowing this to hurt. She was really falling for him, and she believed him when he said he felt the same way about her. Now she believed she meant nothing all along. Did June and Tobias lay in bed laughing about it? How naive and love-struck she had been?
She wished Sienna was off tonight. She was the only person she trusted enough to discuss this with, but their schedules were out of whack, and it would be days before they had time alone together. She looked at the coffee table with disgust. The pizza and wine weren’t cutting it anymore. She shuffled to the kitchen, returning with a pint of double chocolate chunk ice cream in one hand and a spoon in the other. Now, she had what she needed.
She began settling into a comfortable sugar coma when her phone chirped. Tobias? He had the audacity to….
.
He wanted to see her? Was he serious? She began to fire off a nasty reply when she had a different thought.
She hung up the phone and raced to her bedroom, gathering her sexiest black dress from the back of her closet, the one with the dangerously high slit that rendered most mere mortals speechless. Then she pulled out the push-up bra she tended to save for very special occasions.
“Tonight is going to be special, all right,” she muttered.
Squatting on the floor, she pulled out her black heels from under her bed. The ones Jackie called her “fuck me pumps.” Once they were all laid out, she headed into the shower with a wry smile on her lips. She would look like perfection tonight if it was the last thing she did, and she definitely succeeded.
Tobias’s face lit up as she sauntered his way. It took all his strength to keep his jaw from hitting the floor. She looked more beautiful than he had ever seen her before, and that was saying a lot. Sure, losing Faruggia sucked, but if that’s what it took to level the playing field so he could have a second chance with Casey, then so be it. He didn’t like the guy much anyway. And, he was shocked to admit it, but he’d lose a dozen top patients for this cause. Anything for a chance to make it right with her. He smiled as he jumped up from his barstool to greet her.
“Casey!” He leaned in and kissed her cheek, “you look… wow… you are simply stunning.”
“I am, aren’t I?”
“There’s no denying it.”
“Wow,” she said, pulling out her phone, “that means something coming from you. Because I’m sure when you see this, you’re going to be doing a whole lot of denying.”
Tobias’s face fell in confusion.
“I’m sorry, what?”
“How did you end up free this evening, Tobias? Did your other plans fall through?”
You’re my plans tonight, Casey.”
“Really?”
“I’m not sure what you're….”
Casey handed him her phone. Showing him the snapshot she managed to take of June’s three text notifications before she left the senator’s room.
“It’s funny,” she said, as his eyes went wide, “the irony of you leaving your phone behind just before I arrived.”
“Casey, this isn’t what it looks like….”
“So it’s not June making plans for your special evening together? Then again, she is the one who told me about Farrigua being there. Did you tell her that? Whisper it to her along with other sweet nothings? Now, I figured she’d be making you feel all better since it was so easy for me to steal the senator from you. I guess your medical rep isn’t as good as you think.”
“Casey,” he interjected firmly, “I did not have plans with June tonight. I haven’t had plans with June now since….”
“Save it, Carrick! How stupid do you think I am?”
“I don’t think you’re stupid at all,“ he exasperated. "Look, June text me. She wanted to get together, but I declined. I mean, I’m here with you, right? I told you she was just a fling, she’s not….”
“Yes, I know what you told me. But you didn’t tell me that you were fucking her when you were convincing me how special I was.”
“Because I wasn’t! I didn’t! I mean, I called things off with June the day after you and I had lunch at the deli. I didn’t have to, we weren’t official. I didn’t even know where we’d end up, but I called it off because I wanted to see what we could be, and I didn’t want anyone clouding that. I’ve never done that before, Casey. I didn’t know where we’d go, but I swear that’s what I did because I knew we had….”
“Spare me.”
“Casey, I texted her back, and I told her we were done. That I had no desire to see her again. I haven’t seen her since….”
“OK, show me.”
“I… I deleted the messages.”
“How convenient.”
“No, I always delete unnecessary messages. Come on, Casey. If I wanted to be with June, wouldn’t I be with her right now?”
“Well, I’m here to tell you that I don’t care if you want to be with June or with anyone else, for that matter. From what I’ve heard, you’ve fucked half of Boston, so you’ll be just fine without this notch on your belt. The only thing I’m grateful for is every interruption we had because I’m angry enough at myself for not listening to those who tried to warn me about you. Thank God I never actually slept with you. I told you to give me space, now I’m telling you any chance we had, it’s over. Don’t ever contact me again.”
She jumped up from the table, but not before he made one final plea.
“Casey, you can’t do this. You’re basing this on a misunderstanding.”
“I can, I am, and I will. Goodbye, Tobias, find someone else to screw over.”
And with that, Casey found herself outside in the frosty Boston air. As self-assured as she was inside, she started to unravel once she was alone. She had to get out of there. She slipped into a waiting cab, anxious to get back home.
But Tobias didn’t follow. Not because he didn’t want to but because he knew he had given her more than enough reasons to doubt him. Why should she believe him now? His well-deserved reputation preceded him, and she chose to ignore it. She saw the person he was when he was with her and gave him a chance, and he squandered it. He should have gone home. He should have called Kerry or Sasha for advice. But instead, he left the table and made his way to the bar.
“What can I get you?” The bartender smiled.
“Whisky. Straight. And keep them coming until I don’t have the ability to tell you to stop.”
Chapter 10: Chapter 9 - Betwixt, Bothered & Bewildered
Summary:
Summary: Casey’s friends take steps to get her to move forward after her break-up with Tobias, while his friends do their best to keep him from doing more damage. Each of them makes a discovery that makes them think, but is it too late?
Notes:
A/N: It’s long, but I hope you’ll find it worth it. 😊 I really think those invested in the Tobias/Casey storyline will. This is kind of the build-up before the big storm because the series, and their stories, will be forever altered after this chapter.
I enjoyed having each of their friends doing their part to help them, yet they (especially Tobias) just continue to bungle things up on their own. Again, I hope you enjoy this!
Perhaps Casey should have expected her morning to be… unusual… but she hadn’t. At least not until she flipped on the local news to find Senator Farrugia speaking about her. After spitting out her coffee and warding off the shrieks of her roommates, she returned to her room, emerging, looking far more professional than she ever had before.
“That’s it!” Jackie exclaimed. “Work it! You take this moment and make it shine!”
Sienna’s eyes lit up, “You know since we’re walking in with her, we should probably….”
But Jackie was already on the way to her room.
“I’m a step ahead of you! I have a pair of thrift shop Manolos that have just been waiting for this occasion!”
Aurora, who was heading to Kenmore, contently remained in her scrubs. “It’s amazing. When Farrugia was my patient, I certainly didn’t get this attention. In fact, he was trying to keep his hospitalization a secret.”
“Ah, it wouldn’t have mattered,” Elijah shrugged. “There is no way Carrick would have given you the spotlight anyway. He would have….”
Aurora’s slapped Elijah’s shoulder as she shifted her eyes to Casey.
“Can we not mention he of whom we shall not speak in the sanctity of our home?” Sienna chided.
“I’m sorry, Casey, I didn’t….”
“Seriously, it’s OK, guys” Casey smiled.
Jackie emerged from her room looking like a million dollars. “I don’t know what I missed here, so I don’t know what’s OK. But I know what’s not OK, and it’s that look you have going on there, Greene. If you expect us to be seen entering the building with you, you better go up your game.”
“You know, I do have a reputation to uphold… apparently,” Casey giggled.
“Don’t worry, I’ve got Manolo’s too,” Elijah laughed. “Don’t worry, I’ll be worthy of you ladies in just a moment.”
Ethan jumped up from his seat when Casey barreled in through the office door. He stared at her with a look of bewilderment on his face.
“What?” she asked, perplexed. She had only left home an hour ago, but the day already felt long.
“Oh, I don’t know. Your clothing is far more presentable than your usual fare. Still, it’s in direct contrast to your unkempt hair and dazed expression. I’m trying to figure it all out.”
“Thanks, Ethan,” she snapped. “That’s just what I need today.”
“Merely making an observation,” he chuckled, offering her a cup of coffee. “But seriously, are you OK? The media are behaving like feral hounds.”
“I’ll be fine,” she said with a wave of her hand.
He didn’t believe her, but he also knew it wasn’t the time to push. Especially when Baz exuberantly entered the room, tossing a box of sprinkled donuts on the table.
“Hello! I figured we needed some sweets to celebrate the two rock stars of Edenbrook. I can’t believe you pulled it off!”
He appeared surprised when he saw Casey’s subdued manner; he expected that from Ethan, but Casey?
“Hey, what’s wrong? You don’t look like someone who just had a big win.”
“I suppose I don’t.“
“Suppose? If it were me, I’d be having them roll me around the halls on a rose-covered gurney for at least a week.”
“Then I suppose we should all be glad it wasn’t you,” Ethan deadpanned.
“Don’t misunderstand. I am glad we got the senator, but while I was off playing at Kenmore, Mrs. Balentine coded, and little Maya Cortez had a terrible anxiety attack, and I wasn’t here to help them,” Casey frowned. “That’s what I became a doctor for.”
“Well, I took care of Mrs. Balentine, and Maya was stabilized and rested for the remainder of the day,” June said as she glided into the room. “You’re not the only one on staff, Casey.”
“Still, they are my patients, and I was on the clock. I’m one of the few people Maya trusts, but she had to be tended to by a stranger because I was off….”
“… off doing your part to keep this department, and your beloved clinic, afloat at a time when the budget crisis threatens both. Snagging Ferrugia could help us keep our jobs; it can help the clinic remain open. If that occurs, how many Mayas will be helped? You need to start looking at the big picture, Casey.”
“Like you care about the big picture, June,” Casey barked. “You don’t care about the clinic. You probably don’t even care about our program except for one reason… it benefits you.”
It was hard to miss the look of approval in Ethan’s eyes as he glanced up to watch the exchange.
“Doctors like you and Carrick, it’s all about the next article, your next win, how bright of a spotlight can you shine on yourselves. It’s never about the patients!”
Ethan shot Casey a sympathetic look; while he couldn’t have agreed with her more, he had to reel her in for the benefit of the team.
“Casey, I think that you need to….”
“It’s fine,” June interrupted. “We simply have a difference of opinion. But let the record show, I have no shame in looking out for myself,” she turned to Casey. “Noble acts will only get you so far, and sometimes they can even hurt others… like all the patients who will not get care if the clinic closes. You’re a big girl now, Casey… time to assess the big pictures.”
“Sure, big picture, June.” Casey pursed her lips together, attempting to stay silent, but she failed miserably. “I would love to know what game you and Tobias have going on. Did he want you to tell me? Did you both use me for some scheme you’ve dreamed up? I don’t appreciate being toyed with or used!”
June’s eyes locked with Casey’s, with a satisfied smirk on her lips.
“Tobias didn’t tell me a thing. He knows better. Each of us is out for number one in the end, and we respect that. He’d never make such a… rookie mistake. But now those unusual texts he sent me last night make sense. So, thank you for the clarity.”
“OK,” Ethan stated, taking control of the room. “I don’t know what’s going on, and frankly, I don’t care. But we’re bringing this back to work now. Understand?”
“Perfectly,” June said with a smug smile. “I have a consult anyway.”
“Yeah,” Baz announced uncomfortably. “I have one too.”
After they both scurried out of the office, Ethan turned to Casey.
“I know, I know…” she said. "Please spare me… I feel stupid enough already.”
“Can I offer you some advice?”
“Do I have a choice?”
“No,” he chuckled. “There are all kinds of doctors, Casey. You and I aren’t cut from the same cloth as Hirata or Carrick, and that’s a good thing as far as I’m concerned. But don’t be so hard on yourself. June isn’t all wrong. Getting Farrugia may give us the chance to help so many others. I’m sure neither of us plans on doing things like this often, but for now, let’s just take the win.”
“Fine,” she said, bumping her shoulder against his.
“Now, why don’t you tell me what’s going on between you and June?”
“Most of it is of a personal nature, and I’d rather not discuss it.”
“That’s fine, but if it is personal, it needs to stay out of the hospital. We have to work as a team while we’re here.”
“Trust me, I know all about professional and personal worlds colliding.”
“Do you think Carrick is the one who told her about Farrugia? Why would he dangle that carrot?”
“I don’t know. Couldn’t help bragging about it? Or….”
“Or?”
“Or maybe he thought if I stole Farruggia, we’d be even after he stole Stephanie. Then maybe…” she gazed off momentarily until the sound of Ethan clearing his throat brought her back, “oh, I don’t know. But June says it wasn’t him who told her anyway, so what’s the difference?”
“You don’t seem to believe her.”
“I don’t believe a word she says. But that’s unimportant. After all, I have patients to care for, don’t I?”
“Yes,” he smiled wanly, “you do. Get to it, MacTavish.”
Kerry was multi-tasking, dictating a memo to her assistant, and answering e-mails when her phone rang. She looked over and saw “Pain in the Ass”, accompanied by a high school photo of Tobias flashing on her phone.
“Hold on,” she answered curtly before looking to her assistant contritely, “I’m sorry, I need to take this. Let’s continue after lunch.”
Once her assistant was out the door, Kerry cut right to the chase.
“What did you do now?”
Tobias was wearing the carpet out in his bedroom as he paced in frustration. He relayed what happened the previous night, which led to the subsequent hangover today.
“Goddamn,” Kerry enthused. “She stole Farrugia out from under you? That girl is badass! I want to meet her! I don’t even care if she ends up with you. She could be part of our posse.”
“Could we maybe focus, Kerry!?”
“Sorry, my bad.”
“What did I do wrong here?”
“You didn’t tell her.”
“I DID! I told her June, and I were together and that it was in the past.”
“Yeah, but did you clarify that the past meant up until your first date with Casey? They work together, T. It should have been full disclosure.”
“I was afraid she wouldn’t want to get involved then.”
“And that would have been her prerogative, but at least you would have done the right thing.”
“So, you’re saying I did the wrong thing?”
“Not exactly,” Kerry sighed. “It’s a grey area. But if June was persistent after you called things off, why didn’t you just block her?”
“Because hindsight is 20/20! This is why I never did relationships. It’s too much… work! And I already have a job.”
“Poor baby. So, what do you do now? Go back to being slimy of Tobias? Because not for nothing, but that guy could be a major asshole.”
“Yet you were best friends with that version,” he groaned, “what does that say about you. And, no, wise ass. I don’t want to go back. I just want to make things right with her. What the fuck is wrong with me, Ker? This is all so freaking… unnatural.”
“Welcome to being in love, Tobias.”
“HEY! I never said love.”
“Well, it sounds like more than like. But, T, I have to be honest. There is a good chance you already blew it with her.”
“Thanks for the encouragement, sis.”
“Just leave her be. If there’s any chance, you’ll need to give her space. And you need to stop fixating. Find a healthy form of distraction, and that doesn’t mean that pathetic nurse you were sleeping with.”
“I’m not calling you anymore.”
“Yes, you are. Just try not to do anything stupid before you call me again, ok?”
“Yeah, what’s the likelihood of that happening?”
“Slim to none, but try for me, OK, T?”
Sienna shut off the sink and placed the last utensils on the drainboard while Jackie wiped down the table.
“Want to watch a movie?” Jackie asked.
Sienna scrunched her nose. “I’m not in the mood for a movie. Why don’t we play Taboo?”
“We need a fourth player,” Aurora injected, “and Elijah will probably be too tired when he gets home.”
“What about Casey?” Jackie asked.
Sienna and Aurora both shot their roommate a knowing look.
“Oh, don’t tell me she’s holed up in her room again?”
“She is,” Sienna grimaced. “She’s had two days off in a row. That’s a vacation for a resident. Still, she’s only left her room when she needs to eat.”
“This is absurd,” Jackie said with a shake of her head. “Is this all over Aurora’s slimy boss?”
Sienna shrugged, “She really liked him, and he really hurt her. It left her doubting so much, most of all herself.“
“For what it’s worth, I think she laments Farrugia, too,” Jackie added. “She felt like she stooped to Carrick’s level. Now she’s questioning who she is as a doctor. Plus, Farrugia is a nightmare patient from hell. He’s demanding, thinks he is her only patient, and has his nose in everything.”
Aurora shook her head.
“The senator was an asshole at Kenmore too. Honestly, I wasn’t sad to see him go. As to Tobias, he’s been miserable, too, for what it’s worth. He went from being the fun attending everyone loved to a crabby ass we all avoid. Everyone has noticed.”
“Lucky you!” Sienna chuckled. “You get to deal with Casey at home and Tobias at work.”
“I am doing my best to avoid them both,” Aurora smiled. “But don’t worry, they’ll be OK in time.”
“Yeah, and that time starts now,” Jackie snapped. “You may have no choice but to tolerate his bullshit at work. But this is home, and it ends today.”
“Wait!” Sienna hollered after Jackie as she stomped down the hall. “What are you doing? Come back here!”
But Jackie was already in Casey’s bedroom.
“That’s it!” she yelled, yanking Casey’s covers off her. “You’ve been moping around here long enough! We’re all sick of it, and we’re doing something about it.”
“Jackie! We did not agree to this approach!” Sienna hollered.
“You don’t get to decide what I need, Jackie,” Casey balked. “I know what I need, and it’s this bed and….”
“A shower,” Aurora injected. “You could really use a shower.”
“Yes!” Jackie nodded. “That’s what you need! Now go take one. Use extra soap! And when you’re done, we’re dressing you up.”
“Dressing me up? I’m not going anywhere.”
“You don’t have to,” Jackie smirked. “We’re hooking you up like the badass hottie you are, and then you’re making a Tinder profile. And don’t even try to say no.”
“Jackie, I am not creating a Tinder profile!”
“You know,” Sienna said, spinning her wheels, “that might not be the worst idea.”
“Are you serious, Si?”
“Yes, come on, Casey! Just for fun! What you do with it is up to you, but it would be so much fun making one. What do you say?”
“I say you must have been dropped on your head as a child if you think that sounds like fun!”
“Come on, please,” Sienna pleaded. “It’ll give us girl time.”
Casey didn’t do a thing to hide her aggravation. But she knew it would take more energy to argue with her friends when they were like this than thank to give in. Mumbling under her breath, she headed to the shower.
_____
“OK, you HAVE to wear that hot little black dress you bought!” Jackie exclaimed.
Casey’s lips formed a bittersweet smile as she recalled wearing it to meet Tobias, to show him exactly what he’d be missing out on.
“No,” Casey refused. "I’ll look like I’m trying too hard.”
“Why don’t we see if there are some pictures on your phone that you like,” Sienna suggested. “They don’t have to be taken tonight.”
“That’s a good idea,” Aurora agreed. “I always loved that one of you from the street fair in Cambridge last summer.”
“Oh, the one where I’m drinking out of a coconut shell! I think I’ll use that!”
Her friends exchanged smiles as they watched Casey start to light up.
“Ooooh! I like this one,” Sienna said.
“Let me see!” Casey grabbed the phone from her friend’s hand.
Her smile dropped as she stared at the photo. It was a nice shot. She was simply glowing, her eyes sparkling, with the brightest smile.
“This picture…” she stammered. “We were able to sneak a couple hours out one afternoon, and it was such a nice day….”
Sienna shrugged defensively when Jackie shot her a look. Casey’s mood shifted as a wave of wistfulness, then anger, and finally regret rolled over her. She couldn’t use that photo. It wouldn’t be right… then, she changed her mind on a dime.
“Screw it!” she exclaimed. “I look great in that picture! Use it!”
“OK, then we use it,” Sienna grinned. “But let’s take one new one tonight. What do you want to wear?”
“I want to wear this,” she said, looking down at her white camisole and denim shorts.
That?” Jackie questioned.
“Are you saying I don’t look good?”
“No, you look great. It’s just… it’s so… casual?”
“Which is what I want. I want people to know the real me. Besides, I can make this an adorable photo!”
She jumped onto her bed, quickly rolling over on her stomach.
“Here, like this!” She said as she squirmed into an adorable yet sexy pose.
“That’s perfect,” Sienna agreed.
Aurora smiled. “Well, we have our three photos. Let’s make this thing happen!”
And just like that, Casey was back on the market.
The following two weeks felt like an eternity. Casey’s workload was overwhelming, and Farrugia proved to be more difficult by the day. Navigating both him and his obnoxious assistant, Travis, was a full-time job in itself. And if that were not bad enough, the team was coming up empty. Every possible diagnosis hit a dead end, and the senator was losing patience.
While she’d never admit to it, the forced Tinder profile did give her a much-needed ego boost. The right swipes seemed to come in by the dozen. Though she had no interest in dating, it was still nice to know so many found her appealing during a time when she was being so hard on herself. At the end of each day, she’d look through the responses for giggles. Then, one night, two men caught her eye. She decided to swipe right herself, and she began to chat with both. By the end of the week, she lined up two dates.
_____
Tobias was also doing his best to distract himself, but his mind wandered back to Casey no matter how hard he tried. Kerry and Sasha started encouraging him to get out there again. Not only was the new sullen, moody Tobias no fun to deal with, but it hurt to see him so unlike himself. But to everyone’s surprise, he didn’t want to. He remained confident that he’d get a second chance if he bided his time.
One sunny morning, he found himself in a decent mood, so he decided to mend some fences with the residents he’d been scaring during recent weeks. In the past, Dr. Carrick entered the resident’s break room was met with enthusiasm. He was funny, had great stories to tell, and at least half had crushes on him. But the new Dr. Carrick left them leary, so they weren’t sure how to react as he approached their table. But his bright smile put them at ease.
The conversation flowed as easily as the coffee, and laughter filled the room. Even Tobias felt the light beginning to creep in through the cracks, and it felt good.
“Dr. Carrick, are you on Kennmore’s bowling league,” Anna, a pretty red-headed resident, asked.
As if he’d be on the bowling team,” Craig, a handsome, burly resident, scoffed. “He’s too cool for that!”
“Actually, I do bowl,” Tobias corrected. “But I haven’t been on the hospital’s league in years.”
“Well, maybe you should consider joining. I am,” Anna smiled coquettishly.
Craig and his buddy Matt rolled their eyes as Anna shot them a dirty look. Matt caught it, but Craig didn’t; his face had been glued to his phone almost the entire time.
“What the hell are you so obsessed with, Craig?” Tobias asked. “Is texting your girlfriend that enthralling?”
“He wishes,” Matt laughed. “Trying to find a girlfriend is more like it. The man swipes right so much he’s going to have an arthritic thumb.”
“I’m just waiting for the right one,” Craig shot back. “Isn’t that how it works, Dr. C?”
“Hey! I’m almost 37 and single, much to my mother’s chagrin. I might not be the best person to ask for advice on this front.”
“Oh!” Craig exclaimed.
“Let me guess,” Matt snickered. “You found the latest love of your life.”
“Oh, this one is not like the rest!” Craig all but panted. “Seriously, call off the dogs! I have found the future mother of my children!”
“Yes, you have seen one photo. So clearly, she’s the love of your life,” Anna chided.
“It’s three photos,” Craig answered snidely. “And are you telling me you don’t believe in love at first sight? Because I do.”
“Can love at first sight be scientifically proven, Dr. Carrick,” Anna asked with doe eyes.
Tobias remained silent as his mind wandered to the first time he saw Casey at the deli. It wasn’t love… but it was… something.
“Not everything is provable by science, Anna. So if the man says he’s in love,” he pat Craig’s back, “then we have to take him at his word.”
“See!” Craig smiled. “Wait! Holy shit! She’s a doctor, too! Right here in Boston. Where has this angel been hiding for the past two years?”
“From you….” Matt laughed.
“Well, hide no more. I am so swiping right.”
“Give me that phone,” Tobias laughed, yanking Craig’s phone from his hand. “Let me see this woman that has you all….”
The mood of the room changed in an instant when Tobias stopped cold. His eyes wide, jaw nearly on the floor, and nostrils flaring, the residents watched in fear as their one-time favorite attending morphed from Bruce Banner into the Hulk before their eyes. Then he set his gaze on Craig, and his friends were pretty sure that if looks could kill, they would be calling his next of kin that night.
“Did you swipe right?” Tobias angrily demanded. “Did you?”
“Uhh, no… not yet. I was about to….”
“Well, you’re not. Do you hear me? You’re not. Not today, not ever! You’re not even going to think about it. You’re not going to dream about it. In fact, why don’t you just delete the app from your phone? Huh? That’s probably the safest option for everyone.”
“Uhm. OK,” Craig asked nervously. “Is she your girlfriend or something?”
Anna snickered, “Dr. Carrick doesn’t do girlfriends, Craig!”
But the smile ran from her face when his cold eyes moved to her.
“Is something funny?” He asked.
“Not in the least,” she stammered.
“Good. Now, breakfast has lasted long enough. Get back to work!”
Anna smacked Craig’s shoulder the second Tobias stepped out of the room.
“Nice going! Now we’ve got Carrick’s evil twin to deal with for the rest of the day.”
“Oh, by the look on his face,” Matt added, “It’s going to be for more than a day.”
_____
Tobias was no stranger to Tinder. But he deleted it from his phone w several months ago when he met… yeah. But he was getting back on tonight, and he was doing it with a vengeance… or at least he planned on once he got his hand to stop shaking
“You want to rethink this,” Kerry muttered into the phone. "Sleep on it.”
“I’m with Kerry,” Sasha concurred. “You’re being impulsive and, when you’re impulsive….”
“She’s on Tinder with a photo I took of her! The writing is on the wall! She’s done. So I guess I’m done too. Besides, weren’t you two telling me to get out there again? Well, I’m getting out there again!”
“Yeah,” Sasha said, “but not like this, not as a form of retaliation. Just sleep on it.”
“Nope, I’ve got my photos picked, and I’m ready to roll.”
“Oh, Jesus,” Kerry sighed.
“One of me in my labcoat….”
“Are you freaking kidding me? T! That’s pathetic. You know you can put “Doctor” in your bio, right?” Sasha scolded.
Ignoring her, he continued.
“Then I have one from when I was in Cancun. I look damn good if I must say so myself.”
“You must,” Kerry said, taking a sip of wine.
“This is going to end poorly,” Sasha groaned.
“And the last one… Casey took this one of me. I think I’m good here.”
“I think you’re being an asshole here,” Kerry disagreed.
“Noted. But I’m still doing it. Good night, ladies. Thanks for your help.”
“Wait, I had no part in this!” Kerry yelled.
“T,” Sasha pleaded. “Stop. You know what happens when you don’t listen….”
Click.
“…to us.”
And just like that, Tobias was back on the market.
Casey had been on dates with both contenders. Ryder, the adorable and sweet pediatrician from Boston Children’s Hospital, would be almost perfect… at another time. But he was looking for a wife, and Casey was just trying to find her footing.
But then there was Raj. Drop-dead gorgeous with a smile that made her weak at the knees. He was funny and put her at ease. Their conversation flowed naturally at the lovely dinner he planned and on a walk along St. Charles after. They both came from lower-middle-income backgrounds and had loving parents who encouraged them to follow their dreams. He put himself through college and dental school and now ran a successful private practice in Brookline.
He was open to things becoming more serious if they moved that way, but like Casey, he wanted to take it slow. But after a week of talking and a delightful first date, he liked where it was going. When he dropped her off, he asked if he could see her again after work tomorrow, and she agreed. It was all going so well, then he leaned over and kissed her forehead before she left.
Sienna was waiting at the door and pounced on Casey the second she was inside.
“Well? Well?”
“Do I get even a minute here, Si?”
“Nope. You don’t. Spill!”
“It was great,” Casey smiled. “He’s charming, witty, easy to talk to… and gorgeous.”
“Are we seeing him again?”
“Tomorrow.”
Sienna squealed. “I’m so excited for you!”
Casey smiled, but her best friend could see something lurking under the surface.
“Aren’t you excited?” Sienna asked.
“Oh, yeah. I am. Raj is really great, and I want to get to know him more, but….”
“But?”
Casey let out a sigh. “He reminds me of Tobias, and…. just now, he kissed my forehead when I left, which is so sweet, right? But the moment he did, I was back on my first date with Tobias when he kissed my forehead. And if I’m still feeling like this, then maybe I shouldn’t be dating yet, Si.”
“Do you want Tobias back, Casey? Because if you do, I’m sure he’d be….”
“What? No! We’re done. I don’t even like him after what he did to me.“
"But you never gave him a chance to explain,” Sienna pointed out.
“I don’t think he deserves one. I don’t want him, SI, but I just can’t….”
“Forget him?”
“Yeah,” Casey sighed. “I just can’t forget him.”
“Then, maybe it’s a good thing Raj reminds you of Tobias.”
“Huh?”
“What? Do you think you’re the first person to have a “type” Casey? Get to know him. Maybe he’s a less shady Tobias, and he might be just what you want.”
“Huh, I didn’t think of it that way. Maybe you’re right, Sienna. He just might be,” Casey smiled.
After reinstalling Tinder, Tobias checked his phone constantly. And the right swipes were non-stop. It seemed like all of Boston wanted a shot at him, and while he thought this would excite him, it didn’t. Deep down, he created the profile in hope that one person would see it. It was deranged, and he knew it. Even if she did, why would she contact him? Tinder wasn’t going to bring them back together.
While Casey was on her date with Raj, Tobias returned to his townhome after a particularly challenging day at work. He showered and sat on the couch with a beer in his hand. One beer became two, and before he knew it, the six-pack was gone. He opened up TInder and went to Casey’s profile, staring at her for what felt like an eternity. His head was telling him to put the phone down, but his heart kept telling his head to shut up. Tired of the internal struggle raging within him, he finally gave in.
“Fuck it!” he said aloud as he quickly swiped right.
It’s amazing how fast a nice buzz can disappear. It had been pleasantly taking the edge off just a moment before, but now, with one swipe of his thumb, reality seized him, and he was stone-cold sober. He shook his head as he chuckled sardonically to himself.
“Well, I may as well go to bed,” he said out loud. “Because Casey will be blocking me within the hour.”
Casey was eating breakfast in the cafeteria the next day when Raj’s text came in.
I had a wonderful time, and I can’t wait to see you again. Have a great day, beautiful.
A smile spread on her face as she began to reply, accidentally opening a notification that came in from Tinder as she typed. The app opened, and curiosity got the better of her. She looked at the first photo and swiped left. Then she saw the second, and her breath hitched. A picture she had taken of Tobias stared back at her, and she was transfixed. She remembered that day; his eyes felt like they were piercing her very soul, and though it was only a photo, they were having the same effect now.
What is it about this man?
Why do I even care?
But, I did sort of even things, so….
…and Sienna is right, I never gave him a chance to explain things about June… not really….
But what the hell is he doing on Tinder? Oh, wait, I’m on Tinder too….
Casey felt like the oxygen was escaping from the room as she attempted to stop her spinning head and racing heart.
What am I doing?
She knew she should put the phone away. She knew she should forget about him. She knew it was a mistake… but she swiped right anyway, and then she exhaled. She smiled as a feeling of satisfied relief enveloped her for exactly one moment before it was replaced by a sense of impending doom.
What were you thinking?
He finally left you alone!
I must be able to undo this… how do you undo this… fuck! I can’t undo it!
As if his ego wasn’t huge enough already!
He’s going to think I’m pathetic. He’ll probably laugh at me…
He should laugh at me….
With angry tears in her eyes, she threw the phone into her pocket, cursing herself for her poor judgment. With her stomach churning, eating breakfast was now out of the question. She tossed her paper bag into the trash can and she was only certain of one thing. When she got home, she was deleting the app.
A few curses rolled off Tobias’s lips as he hit snooze on his phone for the third time. This time, he had to get up. His eyes squinted shut when he lifted his head from the pillow. It wasn’t quite a hangover, but it was a definitive reminder that he was not twenty-five anymore. Beer consumption had to be limited to two or fewer on work nights. But the damage was already done, and now, he would have to pay the price. He had several meetings he could not get out of today, so calling out wasn’t an option. His feet slid into the slippers beside his bed, and he stretched his arms as he shuffled to the bathroom. That’s when he felt the bricks began to fall.
“Oh, fuck!” he yelled. It wasn’t a dream. He did it.
This is how I give her space….
I am going to look like a freaking stalker….
He grabbed his phone and opened Tinder, fully expecting to see that Casey had blocked him. Instead, he found something very different.
“What the….”
His eyebrows knitted as he tapped furiously on his phone, assuming he must have done something wrong. After all, there was no way, right? She wouldn’t… was she giving him another chance?
You and Casey have liked each other.
Maybe she did. Without thought, he snapped a screenshot, almost afraid it would disappear. Then, with a stupid grin, he slumped back into bed. This was more than he hoped for, perhaps, more than he deserved, but he promised himself something right then and there. There was no way he would blow things with her again. If she was giving him a chance, he would see to it that they worked.
With his spirits rising, he stepped into the shower with an eagerness that had not existed just moments before. Suddenly, he felt like it was going to be a great day.
Back at Edenbrook:
“Casey!” Danny yelled, “I was just looking for you! I have the results from that paint sample you tested. It was marked urgent.”
“Oh! Thank you, Danny,” she said, pulling the results from his hands. “Negative! There wasn’t any lead in Senator Farrugia’s house? How can that be?”
She retreated to the empty diagnostics office and took a seat at the computer, typing the senator’s name into a search engine. Page after page of items tracking his every move appeared, but nothing jumped out. As the articles got older, the headlines began to refer to him as ‘Mayor Ed.” One link caught her eye…
Three dead in lead poisoning scandal… aging lead pipes have been poisoning the water supply… three deaths, including thirteen-year-old Jonathan Perry….
“Oh my god, That’s Travis’s last name! He’s from the senator’s hometown, and….”
Casey jumped to her feet and ran out of the office. Security Officer Gunderson stood outside of the senator’s room, chatting idly with Rafael.
“Bobby! Call the police, now!”
“Why? What’s going on?”
“The senator’s aid, Travis… I think he’s been poisoning him.”
Tobias was fidgeting uncomfortably at his desk. Nearly three hours had passed since he sent a message to Casey, and it was radio silence since then. The fact that he had checked his phone dozens of times didn’t stop him from checking once more.
Nothing.
The renewed hope that had brightened his world just hours before was slowly dissipating to nothing. Of course, she wasn’t giving him another chance, and he felt like a fool for ever assuming she would.
“So much for getting your hopes up, Carrick,” he sighed.
And like that, it was clear, this was not going to be a great day.
