Chapter Text

Alec Lightwood lived a fairly normal life. He often dreamed of becoming a professional soldier, following his father's example, so that his family could be proud of him. Until his whole life turned upside down.

At the beginning of his senior year on high school, his friend Sebastian Verlac, offered him a ride on a motorcycle, Alec refused, saying that he would walk when he was so nice weather. Sebastian persuaded him to get on and even handed him a helmet. Alec finally agreed.A few minutes later he realised that he had made a fatal mistake. There was something spilled on the road. Sebastian heeded the warning and skidded. It happened so fast that neither of the boys had time to react. Sebastian scrambled to his feet and looked around. Not far from him lay something resembling a piece of a leg. Pale Sebastian turned to Alec, his eyes on his friend's wounds.

"Fuck!" He cursed and began to back away. Alec, who was shocked, didn't even realize what was going on. "Bas?" He asked in a trembling voice. "It's blood!" Then Alec's eyes fell on his leg. Or rather what's left of it.

"No! Seb! Seb!“ His voice calling for help. Sebastian ignored the call. He fled.

Alec would probably bleed on the spot, if a car didn't pass by. It stopped immediately. "Hey! Hey! ”A person slapped his cheek. "Just calm down!" Man pressed his jacket against the bleeding wound.

"I'm a doctor." And with his other hand, he pulled a phone from his pants pocket. He was talking to an ambulance.

"He does not seem to be reacting, he´s in shock. And he has a huge loss of blood. ”The doctor turned to Alec. "Are you with me?" Alec nodded faintly. "Okay, that's fine," the doctor smiled.

"What is your name?"

"Alec. "

"Everything will be fine, Alec. An ambulance is on its way. "

Maryse, Robert and their three children walked through the hospital. "Where can we find Alec Lightwood?" The nurse directed them to the room.

Alec was awoke by a familiar touch. He opened his eyes and saw his mother sitting by the bed stroking his hair. There were tears in her eyes. "Mom?" Maryse stopped.

"Alec, baby!" She tried to smile. "What happened?"

"Not now, honey, " she smiled. "Just sleep, okay?"

"I don't want to sleep, I want to know what happened! ”Alec interrupted. Maryse silently uncovered the duvet. Alec froze, staring at the stump of his left leg. There was a few minutes of silence in the room.

"Alec?" Izzy tried. Alec raised his head and looked at his family.

"Go away!" He called in a voice without emotion.

"Alec!" Jace addressed him.

"Get out!" He raised his voice. As the door slammed shut behind his family, he buried his head in the pillow and cried. Everything came back to him. "Rotten in hell, Verlac!" He shouted.

"I thought he'd love to see us, "Jace turned to the rest.

"Alec needs time to deal with it by himself, now," Maryse replied. "When that time comes, he will need us."

"The doctor said it happened while riding a motorcycle, "added Robert. "Alec doesn't have a motorcycle, jso how..."

"Sebastian Verlac, "Izzy replied. "They are friends since freshman year. He had to offer him a ride and ... it ended the way it ended. "

"Verlac had to run, the doctor said when he found Alec, that Alec was there alone. "

"That bastard! He ran away and didn't give first aid, he would let Alec die of bleeding! ”Jace was angry. "When he gets under my arm, I'll kill him!"

Sebastian tossed the bag on the bed and began throwing things into it. He had to get out of here. He had to leave New York. When he saw a piece of Alec's leg on the road, he had to suppress a feeling of vomiting. Now he felt that he might vomit. He can't even face Lightwoods.

"Sebastian?" His mother didn't understand, when she came into the room.

"Mom," he turned. "What does that mean?" She didn't understand the bag and the things crammed into it.

"I have to get out of New York!" He replied, buttoned his bag, and was about to leave.

"What happened? You look upset. "

"Mom, I can't explain it now. I'll call you, okay? ”Sebastian leaves. He closed his eyes in relief only when he left New York.

The door to the room opened and a doctor peered into the room. He had to smile, the dark-haired young man was asleep. Tears dried on his cheeks.Poor man and his poor family, the doctor thought. He had everything in front of him.

"I told you to ... I'm sorry," Alec said halfway through.

The doctor smiled. "OK. So I won't ask how you feel. "

"What would you say? ”Alec grinned. "I had plans. I wanted to go to the army, like my dad. They probably won't take the one-legged cripple. "

"I'm sorry, "said the doctor's condolences. "Maybe not the army, but I'm sure you'll find employment like that. We'll find something when you recover. ”

Alec tilted his head curiously. "Yeah? You can conjure a new leg. ”

"I just can't do that. But I can help you when you start rehabilitation. "

"I ..., "Alec began. "Thank you."

"You're welcome, Alexander, ”the doctor smiled, preparing to leave.

Alec tried to sit up. "How....?"

"How can I help you or what? ”The doctor turned from the door.

"What's your name?" Alec asked shyly.

"Magnus. I'm Magnus. "

"Thank you, Magnus. "

Alec was having breakfast when his father entered the room.

"Can we talk?" Robert asked.

"Sure," Alec nodded.

"How are you feeling?" Robert began to ask.

"Miserable," Alec admitted. "But I'm to blame." He wanted to avoid his father's gaze.

"How did that happen?" Robert asked.

"Sebastian offered me a ride. I refused at first, but persuaded me that he also had an extra helmet. I sat down next to him. It happened very fast, there was something spilled on the road and Sebastian skidded. I have blurred other things. I felt pain and then nothing. When I partially regained consciousness. Sebastian stared at me, pale as a ghost. Then I saw it. I begged him, I asked him for help to call an ambulance, to stop the bleeding. And he ... He ran away. He left me there. If Dr. Bane hadn't passed, it might have ended badly. Dad, I'm so sorry. "

"It's not your fault, Alec. You couldn't have known. "

Magnus came to the doctors roomwith a small smile on his face. Cat turned after him in amusement.

"What is it?" He asked.

"That's what I want to ask you," Cat shook her head.

"I talked to Alec ..."

Barbara Verlac opened the door, behind them stood a man in a military uniform.

"I'm Robert Lightwood, I'm looking for your son, Mrs. Verlac."

"Sebastian is not here, he left, "she replied.

"And where did he go? Didn't he tell you?" Robert asked.

Barbara shook her head. "He was in a hurry to leave."

"I'm not surprised, "Robert grinned. "I guess he didn't tell you what happened today."

Barbara looked at Robert blankly. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Can we talk inside? ”Robert asked. Barbara nodded and let Robert in.

"Can I offer you something?" She asked.

"Coffee, thank you."

Barbara sat Robert in the living room and went into the kitchen. There were photos of the Verlacs everywhere on the shelves.

"Here it is." Barbara placed a cup of coffee in front of Robert.

"Thank you," Robert smiled.

"Then tell me what my boy did."

"It will be a strong coffee. I have a problem to breathe it myself, "Robert began.

"Your son offered my son a ride on a motorcycle. Our Alec allegedly refused for the first time, according to what he told me. But then he let himself be persuaded. There was an accident. ”

Barbara looked at Robert. "Sebastian looked fine."

"Sebastian yes. Not my son. Alec lost his leg in the accident. "

"But that was your son's fault, he shouldn't have sat on that motorcycle. "

"I'm not defending Alec, Mrs. Verlac. It was stupid of him. But your son escaped from the scene without calling for help. And failing to provide first aid is already a criminal offense. He would just let my son bleed there. "

"Sebastian must have been shocked that there was nothing he could do, "Barbara defended her son's actions.

Izzy peered into the room. "Hi, can I go in?" She asked.

"Sure," Alec nodded.

"I know, Izzy. I appreciate it, "he smiled. "Sit down, I won't bite you."

"I, ”Izzy sat down in a chair by the bed. "I brought you something so you wouldn't be bored here before they let you go home." She placed a bag on the table.

"Show it," Alec reached out. There were several books in the bag. "Thanks Izzy," Alec smiled. "I was afraid for a while that you cooked something. I don't want to cause poisoning yet. "

"You! ”Izzy jumped to her feet. "I'll punch you! My cooking happens to be great. ”

"Great, for indigestion, "Alec grinned.

"You grinded quickly," Izzy shook her head.

"Did you expect me to be depressed? What has happened cannot be changed. "

A nurse with a wheelchair entered the room. "Good morning, Mr. Lightwood, how did you sleep?"

"It wasn't bad,"Alec shrugged.

"So, are you ready?"

"I guess so.”

The nurse and assistant helped Alec into the wheelchair. For the first time since his explosion, Alec looked again at the stump, closing his eyes painfully.

"You have nothing to do, Bane? ”Dot asked amusedly as he peered into the rehab.

"I read the schedule and saw that you had Alexander Lightwood written here for today. So I just wanted to see how he was doing and how he was going. "

"He should be here any minute, "Dot replied. The door opened and a wheelchair with Alec drove inside.

"Hi Raphael," Dot thanked.

Raphael nodded. "When you're done, I'll pick you up again," Raphael bowed to Alec.

"Sure," he nodded.

"Slowly." Alec gritted his teeth.

"Only one leg carries the weight of the whole body, relax." Alec tried what he was told. Magnus swallowed blankly.He has a nice ass! He immediately scolded himself for it. You can't drool over him. He's younger than you, he's your patient and he needs help to get back to normal life.

"Magnus, stop drooling and bring us crutches. We try to walk!" Dot told him.

Alec turned to Magnus in disbelief, losing his concentration on what the balance was focused on and ending up on the ground.

"Ouch!" Alec yelled, tears welling up in his eyes.

"Alec!" Dot squatted beside him. "Are you okay?"

"Are you all right, Alexander? ”Magnus jumped up to him and wanted to help him upstairs.

“ Don't touch me! ”Alec snapped. He fought tears, with wounded pride, and cursed everyone around. Especially Sebastian and himself.

"Slowly, slowly. It's nothing, ”Magnus hugged him carefully.

"Leave me alone!" Alec pulled away.

"I'll call Raphael," Dot said.

Cat sat down at the doctor's office and sighed. "So what?" Magnus turned from the window. "He doesn't eat, He doesn't speak. He refuses any help. "

After five minutes, Tessa returned with a wheelchair and two medical staff. "You can take this with you," she pointed to the book Alec had in his hand.

"The rise and fall of D.O.D.O., "Tessa read on the cover. "Is that nice?"

Alec looked up from the book, slammed it shut, and set it down beside her on the bench. "You're not one to give up, are you?" He grinned.

"None of us are. We want to help you. ”

Alec looked at his hands in his lap. He's been in the hospital for a month and a half, and he's really getting on his nerves. "I'd like to go home," a tear ran down his cheek.

"We all want you to get home as soon as possible. You would, but you had to start cooperating again. I know that something broke in you when you failed on rehabilitation . But do you have to keep trying, can't you give it up, or do you want to be confined to a wheelchair? ”

A blond guy entered the hospital building and accessed the information. "Hello, please, where can I find Alec Lightwood?"

The nurse typed something into her computer and guided guy to the ward.

Magnus raised his head as he knocked. Alec stuck his head in the door. "What can I do for you, Alexander?" Magnus smiled.

"Can I go in?" He asked. Magnus nodded and Alec drove inside.

"How are you?" Magnus cleared the way for him.

"I´m okay," Alec shrugged. "Can I ask you something?" Alec asked, biting his lip.

"Sure," Magnus nodded with a smile.

"I ... um ... I'd like to go home."

"Alec, I can't let you go ... "

"I know. I know, "Alec nodded. "I want to start again."

"I'll talk to Dot and let you know, "Magnus promised Alec.

"Thank you."

Alec entered the room with a smile on his face. The smile faded from his face at lightning speed. Sebastian Verlac sat in the room. Alec had to blink a few times to make sure he wasn't dreaming.

"Hi Alec," Sebastian said.

"What are you doing here?" Alec asked in an icy voice.

"I came to apologize."

"After a month. Should I congratulate you? ”

Sebastian left with his head bowed.

Cat bumped into the doctor´s room.

"What happned?" Dot asked.

Cat tried to catch her breath.

"So what happened?" Raphael asked.

"Alec," Cat answered. "He´s gone."

"What do you mean, gone? ”Dot didn't understand.

"He's not in his room and none of the staff has seen him."

Magnus went to the room. "What's going on?" He asked his colleagues.

"Alec is gone. He is not in the room and no one has seen him. "

The whole hospital could see Alec's progress, and some did not miss a certain rapprochement between the two men. Dot, Cat, and Raphael knew, but they weren't going to tell anyone to keep Magnus and Alec in trouble.

"And when they release me, will we be able to be together?" Alec looked Magnus in the eye.

"Yes," Magnus nodded. "As a doctor, I can't start anything with my patient. But it will run away before you know it, you'll be home. "

"That was the idea, this miss," Magnus said to Izzy.

"So you got me out of the room just to get this ready?"

"No and yes. Dot all she wanted was to give you exercises at home, "Magnus replied.

"Somehow she didn't give them to me," Alec shrugged.

"Yeah, here you go," she said from behind him.

"Thanks," he smiled as he picked up a sheet of paper from Dot.

"Take care," she patted him on the shoulder. "Even if you have great supervision."

"What does she mean? ”Jace and Izzy didn't understand.

"Didn't Mom tells you?" Alec asked with a wide smile on his face.

"She didn't say anything," Izzy shook her head.

"Shall we tell them, Alexander?" Magnus smiled.

"But expect them to fall on me like locusts," Alec replied with a laugh.

"So what's this about?" Izzy asked eagerly.

"Me and Magnus together ... The spark just jumped."

"Are you dating? ”Izzy exclaimed enthusiastically.

"Unofficial yet, but yes," Magnus replied.

"That's amazing!" Izzy hugged Alec.

Alec entered the house, Jace pushing a wheelchair behind him. "Then go see when Robert returns, we can rebuild it," Jace patted him on the shoulder.

Alec opened the wooden door and leaned against the fur. "It's beautiful!" He exhaled.

"We're glad you like it," Maryse put a hand on his shoulder. "The bed is bigger, but maybe it doesn't matter."

"Not at all, "Alec shook his head.

"Of course not. At least all four of us can sleep on it again. "

"And where do you get the certainty that I will want you in it? ”Alec grinned amusedly. Izzy punched him playfully in the shoulder. "Hey," Alec said.

"We're going out with Clary and Simon, if you tell Mom, "Izzy peeked into Alec's room.

"Sure," Alec looked up from the book.

"By the way, where is it like a sequel? They can't cut it like that! ”

Izzy laughed. "Another who was surprised by the end of the D.O.D.O."

"700 pages and this is the end? ”Alec looked angry. "I need a sequel and immediately!"

"I guess we'll have to wait, "Izzy shrugged. "See you later."

Max and Maryse returned from school just as Alec was leaving the bathroom. Max's chin dropped. "Alec!" He shouted with joy.

"Wait! Wait, little one! Let me sit down first, "Alec stopped him. Alec settled down on the living room couch and Max sat down next to him. "I'm glad you're home."

"Me too, Max, It´s getting on my nerves. ”Max snuggled in Alec's arms and he hugged him.

"Where are these two?" Maryse peered into living room.

"Somewhere with Clary and Simon," Alec shrugged. "One-legged would probably hinder them!"

"Alec! ”She threw a towel at him.

"What One-legged?" Max didn't understand.

"Nobody, little man," Alec chuckled Max's nose.

Cat sat down next to Magnus, who was playing with the phone. "How is Alec?" She asked with a knowing look.

"I don't know," Magnus shrugged.

"It's been almost a week since he was released, and you don't know anything?" She asked in surprise.

"I give him time with his family. He hasn't seen them in almost two months. "

"But that doesn't mean you can't write to him, "Cat said.

"I don't want him to think I'm rubbing."

"What if he's waiting for you to call? ”Cat said. "Don't tell me you're scared."

"I'm not scared," Magnus shook his head.

"So what are you waiting for? Write to him or I'll do it for you. "

Clary, Simon, Jace and Izzy returned and found the rest of the family on the couch.

"Hello people," they entered the living room.

"Clary, Simon," Maryse said.

"Hello," Alec nodded. Simon and Clary were about to answer when they both stopped and stared with their mouths open. Alec sighed and rolled his eyes. "Has anyone told you that it's not polite to stare at someone like that?"

"I'll leave you here,“ Maryse said.

"Let's do a movie!" Jace suggested.

"Fine," Simon shrugged. "Alec?"

"Hey! ”Simon insulted. During the film, Alec received a message.

"I'll give it to you," Max offered, reaching for the table where Alec had the phone, and as he reached out and relaxed and stretched out on the couch, Alec accidentally kicked Alec. "Ouch."

Max paused. "Are you okay?" Everyone was worried.

"Yeah," Alec said between gritted teeth. "He kicked me in the stomach."

"I'm sorry, Alec. I'm really sorry. "

"It´s, Max," Alec tried to smile. Alec's smile widened as he saw who was writing to him.

Hi Alexander, I hope I'm not interrupting. I wanted to ask how are you? Magnus.

Hi Magnus, you're not interrupting. We are watching a movie with siblings and a couple of friends. How am I doing? Except that just my brother kicked me to the stomach, probably good. Will you come blow me up? Alec

I´m blowing at it right now.. Better? M

A little. Maybe another kiss? A

Cat raised an eyebrow when she saw Magnus smiling amused. "What is?"

"Read it for yourself. ”He pushed her phone.

Cat laughed. "How old is he? Five?"

Cat looks over my shoulder and asks if you happen to be five? M

Tell her I'm five and a half :-P. A

Good. Now seriously, what would you say to the coffee invitation? M

I would accept it because it sounds good. When and where? A

Tomorrow at three in the Hunter's Moon cafe? M

Alec supported himself with crutches and wanted to open the door of the cafe.

"Wait," a woman's voice called after her. "I'll open it for you."

Alec smiled gratefully. "Thank you."

"That's fine, "she waved.

Magnus waved from his table at Alec. "Hello," he nodded and pushed back his chair.

"Hello, Magnus," Alec smiled.

"I'm surprised you went with the crutches."

"I can't be idle, "Alec shrugged.

"It is true. Dot would praise you. "

"Say hi to her."

"I will and how are you? ”Magnus promised.

"Otherwise, probably nothing. I'm  at home for now. Somehow I can't decide to go back to school."

"Take your time. "

"I know, I just ... I would like to graduate with the others, "Alec suggested.

"You're a smart young man, you'll catch up those two months."

Alec blushed slightly and looked away.

"You're cute when you're blushing."

"Stop it, Magnus," Alec countered. "I'm not cute at all," Alec protested. "I'm a cripple. Everyone looks at me like on monkey at the zoo. And those compassionate and condemning looks. I don't care about them. I don't care about anyone. I want everyone to give me peace! I don't want anyone to be as interested as before. ”Alec put his head in his hands. Carefully, Magnus got up and sat down next to Alec, hugged him, and stroked his back soothingly. Alec calmed down after a few minutes.

"Good?" Magnus was worried.

"Yeah, it's better. Sorry I ruined our first date. "

"You didn't ruin anything, " Magnus assured him. "Let's get out of here."

"Do you live here? ”Alec raised his head.

"Yeah. "Upstairs," Magnus nodded. "Don't worry, there's an elevator!" He added when he saw Alec's horrified look.

"Goodl. Otherwise, I'd probably hit you with a crutch if I had to scramble to the top floor. ”

They took the elevator up and Magnus unlocked it. "Please, sir," he cleared the way for Alec.

"Thank you."

They entered the living room together.

"Sit down, I'll get us something to drink for now." Alec nodded and watched Magnus leave. Alec looked around for a moment as something rubbed against his arm. At first he screamed, and when he saw the cat under his arm, he calmed down.

Alec shot a look between them and sighed in frustration and rolled his eyes.

Epilogue

Magnus was working when he received a text message from Izzy.

Magnus looked up from the phone. And he pulled Alec's file out of the drawer.September 12 stood there. And then he finally flipped through Alec's medical records. And he closed his eyes painfully. The accident that turned Alec's life upside down happened five days later.

"Where are we going?" Alec asked after Friday after work.

"It´s surprise," Magnus smiled at him. "Do you believe me?" Magnus asked.

"I believe you," Alec nodded.

"Okay." Magnus turned in the back seat and took a scarf that tied it around Alec's eyes.

"I'm not sure if it's a good idea," Alec doubted. "I'm not entirely sure about walking, and you're not making it easy for me."

"I'll always be by your side," Magnus assured him. "Nothing will happen to you."

They entered the elevator together.

"We'll be there," Magnus told Alec as the elevator rang. Magnus pulled the keys from his bag and unlocked them.

"I'll take it off," Magnus began untying the scarf. Alec blinked a few times to get used to the light. They were in Magnus's apartment. An inscription hung in front of him Happy birthday, Alexander. Alec turned to Magnus.

"Who told you so?!"

"Your medical file," Magnus shrugged. "And your sister."

Alec just shook his head. "Thank you."

"You do not have to thank me."

"Open it," Magnus handed Alec a box. Alec opened it and found a bow and arrow necklace inside.

"It is beautiful! Thank you," he kissed Magnus on the cheek.

"I'm glad you like it, I remembered you, in the hospital, saying you liked archery."

"I had," Alec nodded.

"We'll find a way to get you back to it," Magnus promised. "Let me. I'll fasten that necklace" Magnus asked, and Alec nodded.

"I love you, Alexander." Alec's cheeks flushed, it took him a moment to realize what Magnus had just said.

"I love you too, Magnus." Magnus smiled and pulled Alec into a kiss.
