Chapter Text
Limsa Lominsa, shortly after Leviathan’s defeat
Yugiri: “That such beings can be defeated runs contrary to all I know... Whence comes your strength and sense of purpose?”
Gabriel: “It’s the magic of being too stupid to know when to quit. Also, the power of dragons. Mostly the dragons, in practice.”
Yugiri: Actually shocked. “You- you carry the blessing of dragons within you?”
Gabriel: Fidgets with the dragoon soul crystal. “I, um, carry a blessing within me. Dragons didn’t really have anything to do with it, though. They didn’t exactly give me the abilities I use.”
Yugiri: “Interesting… in Othard, dragons are blessed creatures. They are believed by many to bring good luck to all around them.”
Gabriel: “Ah… that’s, er… quite interesting…”
Yugiri: “I gather from your nervous tone that such is not the case in this land.”
Gabriel: “Ishgard is the only nation that deals with them at all. And they’ve… well, they’ve been at war with dragons for a thousand years.”
Yugiri: “I’m sorry? At war with- I cannot see how that would bring anything but eternal misfortune!”
Gabriel: “Well, it’s been nothing but trouble for the rest of us, so you may have a point there.”
Yugiri: “And in the course of this long war, Ishgard took the power of dragons?”
Gabriel: “In essence, yes. I’m really not at liberty to divulge anything more than that, I’m afraid. We’re treading rather close to state secrets here.”
Yugiri: “I understand. I suppose that means you are not at liberty to teach these arts to others, either.”
Gabriel: “You would be right about that.” Smiles brightly. “But enough about my combat abilities. Let’s talk about yours, from the spawning grounds. They looked kind of like what Thancred does… and then you started throwing around fire and lightning. There’s no way you had time to cast any kind of spell there. What was that?”
Yugiri: Smiles behind mask. “The shinobi arts are Doma’s oldest martial art. We stalk in the shadows, meditate, and clear our minds… and then strike without warning.”
Gabriel: “Okay… but where does throwing around all that fire and lightning come into it? Your spellwork hit hard and fast enough to make the Order of Nald’thal weep with envy!”
Yugiri: “It is not spellwork, not quite. Mudras rely on different techniques. We meditate to shape our minds in a certain way, and then the world responds accordingly.”
Gabriel: “So what else can you do with them?”
Yugiri: “I can use the winds to speed myself up, or the water to swiftly obscure myself. I can turn the earth itself against my opponents or summon ice to entrap them. Masters of the art can summon great hellfrogs to fight their enemies, or even attack through shadowy duplicates…”
Gabriel: Suddenly excited. “Wait, you can summon a giant frog?”
Yugiri: “I cannot. I have not yet achieved that level of mastery.”
Gabriel looks extremely crestfallen at this.
Yugiri: “Do I disappoint you so much?”
Gabriel: “What? No! No, no, I just…” Looks around as if to make sure nobody is watching. “I’ve always wanted to ride a giant frog into battle.”
Yugiri: “…”
Gabriel: “…”
Yugiri: “The racket outside of Revenant’s Toll last week… was that you trying to tame one of the Nix that roam the old camp?”
Cut to an image of Y’shtola trying to read an ancient tome, getting steadily more irritated by all the noise.
Gabriel: “…maybe?”
Yugiri: “…did you succeed?”
Gabriel: “No. No I did not.” Sighs. “Someday. Someday I will. And then the world will behold true glory.”
Yugiri: “You are a very strange man, Gabriel Sevatar.”
Gabriel: Gives her a crooked grin. “In a good way or a bad way?”
Yugiri: Pretends to think about it. “Well, it is thanks to you and your order that my people found a place in this land. I suppose I may be leaning towards good.”
Chapter Text
The Twelvewood, shortly after the capture of Elin Roaille
Yugiri: “Even a warrior of Roaille's renown could not have hoped to escape by force. Despite her claims, her surrender does not bespeak innocence, but an awareness that her position is untenable. With the Ivy thus uprooted, it is to be hoped that the tendrils she entwined around the Immortal Flames will gradually wither and die. Mayhap then the people of Ul'dah will have the Grand Company they deserve.”
Gabriel: “Must have felt good, bringing down an imperial spy, after what they did to your home.”
Yugiri: “I find it difficult to take any pleasure in fighting imperials after they crushed us so thoroughly.”
Gabriel: “Ah… sorry if I brought up any uncomfortable memories for you.”
Yugiri: “It is fine. I am happy enough to help the people of this land. Mayhap I can help repel the empire from here, at least.”
Gabriel: Chuckles. “Lolorito is a fucking idiot.”
Yugiri: “I beg your pardon?”
Gabriel: “To just reject your people out of hand. Your skill and dedication have won you a lot of respect in the Toll, Yugiri. I doubt he had the slightest clue what he was just tossing aside when he blathered about ‘criminal refugees’ at that meeting.”
Yugiri: Smiles. “Well, if he should come to regret his decision, he may come to learn that there are some things his money cannot buy him.”
Gabriel: “Ha! I’d pay to see that.” Adopts an incredibly smarmy imitation of Lolorito’s voice. “Oh, Lady Yugiri, will you not consider my offer? The skills of you shinobi are legend, and I am willing to pay double my usual premium in order to secure your services.”
Yugiri: Stifling a laugh “…no.”
Gabriel: “WHAAAAAAT?! This is impossible! This cannot be! None can resist the power of my money!”
Yugiri: Laughs. “It is clear that you do not think much of the Syndicate.”
Gabriel: “I’ve never understood the Ul’dahn obsession with money. Then again, I grew up hunting boars in these woods, so maybe I’m just a backwoods yokel who doesn’t understand civilized society, or some nonsense like that.”
Yugiri: “Ul’dah is nothing. If you wish to see true avarice and corruption, I advise that you visit Kugane.”
Gabriel: “Another entry on the list of places to burn to the ground?”
Yugiri: “I would understand the temptation. Turning back the subject a little, you say you grew up in these woods?”
Gabriel: “I did.” Points to the east. “That way, not far from Baelsar’s wall.”
Yugiri: “Then you, too, know what it is to live in Garlemald’s shadow.”
Gabriel: “I do… I don’t want to talk about it.”
Yugiri: “It would seem that I was the one to bring up unpleasant memories.” Bows. “Please forgive me.”
Gabriel: “It’s fine, no harm done.”
Yugiri: “…still, these woods are quite beautiful. I could think of worse places to call home.”
Gabriel: “I’m flattered you think so. It looks a bit different when you remember spearing wild boar at the age of twelve.”
Yugiri: “Your parents had you boar hunting at twelve?!”
Gabriel: “Umm... is that strange?”
Yugiri: “...it explains a great deal.”
Gabriel: “I’ll take that as the compliment it probably wasn’t intended to be. Want a drink?”
Yugiri: “A drink? Should we not report in?”
Gabriel: “Ah, Ilberd can make the report. I can call Alphinaud by linkpearl if I need to. It’s been a long day; you deserve a chance to unwind. Besides, Buscarron’s about ready to crack open a bottle of Qiqirn firewater he and I have been aging for almost a year now. I’m sure he’ll be happy to let you join in.”
6 hours later
Gabriel: Completely drunk “And then I hiked aaaaaaaaallll the way to the Longstop, only for Brayflox to tell me that a dragon had driven them from their homes. A bloody dragon! Can you believe it?”
Yugiri: Slightly buzzed. “This all seems rather excessive for… banquet preparations?”
Gabriel: “That’s what Shtola said. To their faces, with much meaner words. And it all turned out to be some test of worthiness, to see if I was ‘heroic’ enough to fight Titan or… something. Why can’t those damn things ever be simple? Bring ‘em a chirurgeon’s note, or… something?”
Yugiri: “I honestly do not understand why you do not complain more.”
Gabriel: “What do you mean? Why would I complain more?”
Yugiri: “From the stories I have heard this night, you are the single most put-upon hero I have ever heard of.”
Gabriel: “What? Noooooo. No no no. That’s not true… is it?”
Yugiri: “Gabriel, in between fighting the Empire and killing literal gods, you have been asked to recruit for a mercenary army, made to handle diplomacy between nations, and dragged into a Goblin cheese war. And that is only within the last two months.”
Buscarron: Behind the bar, also buzzed and enjoying the show. “Oh, Gabriel. You may be wearing that fancy spiky armor from Ishgard now, but you're the same as ever.”
Yugiri: “Are you not worried that people may be taking advantage of your generosity?”
Gabriel: Stares at his drink. “Huh. That… never really occurred to me. I need more drink now.”
Buscarron: “You think you can handle more drink?”
Gabriel: “Hah! Pour it in! I can do this all… night…” Slumps over unconscious.
Buscarron: “Or not. Congratulations, Lady Yugiri. Victory is yours.”
Yugiri: “It is?”
Buscarron: “Standard drinking game. Last one standing wins.”
Yugiri: “I see… so, should we get him to a bed?”
Buscarron: “Oh yes. But first things first.” Hands her a charcoal stick. “As the victor, it is your right to draw whatever you want on the face of the loser.”
Yugiri: “…if I had lost, would he have removed my mask to do so?”
Buscarron: “Oh, no. He wouldn’t do something like that without permission. Might have tried to draw on the mask, though.”
Yugiri: “My mask is dark blue and made of cloth. Charcoal would scarcely show up on it.”
Buscarron: “He’s never been one to let a little thing like logic stop him. You know he sleeps with his armor on?”
Yugiri: Looks at the very spiky Drachen armor. “That cannot be good for the bedsheets.” Moves to take off his helmet, then stops. “I shall respect his privacy as well.” Draws a stylized sketch of a frog on the visor of Gabriel’s helmet. “That should amuse him. We shall have to lay him on his side, I take it.”
Buscarron: Nods. “Pretty little sketch, there. Most people would have gone for something a lot… well, cruder. It’ll be a shame to have to wash this off come morning.”
Yugiri: “Dare I ask what Gabriel would have drawn?”
Buscarron: “You know, I don’t really know. He’s never actually won one of these little games. Poor boy doesn’t know how to pace himself at all.”
Yugiri: “In drink or in life.” Gets under Gabriel’s arm and starts carrying him up to the inn rooms.
Buscarron: “Yep. And it looks like the Scions have been running him just as ragged as everyone else. Damn shame.”
Yugiri: “And he had the audacity to insist that I needed a break!”
Buscarron: “If you work half as hard as he does… yeah. You do. Rooms are on the house, by the way. Any friend of Gabriel’s is a friend of mine.”
Yugiri: “You have my gratitude, Master Buscarron.” Pauses for a moment. "You speak of him as though he were your kin."
Buscarron: "Not really, but he grew up around here. His parents... well, they called themselves hunters, although in hindsight I'm pretty sure they were poachers. Had him training with a boar spear as soon as he could walk. Died when he was about twelve. They went hunting too close to the Wall, and... well."
Yugiri: "That's horrible."
Buscarron: "He wasn't the same for years after that. Eventually, I figured that some time away might help him, so I sent him off to the lancer's guild. Be around people his age, have friends beyond the dozen or so people who live around here, that sort of thing. Seems to have done him a lot of good." He gets a twinkle in his eye. "Never thought I'd see him bring a girl here."
Yugiri: "I believe you may be misinterpreting things..."
Buscarron: "Ah, just friendly business acquaintances, eh?"
Yugiri: "Something like that."
Notes:
Ya boi is a total lightweight.

Camp Dragonhead, shortly after the Bloody Banquet
Tataru: “Alphinaud!? Gabriel!? Is it really you?”
Gabriel: “Tataru? Oh, thank the goddess you made it. If the Braves had done anything to you of all people, I was actually going to head back to Ul’dah and start putting heads on spikes.”
Tataru: “I’m so happy that… that you are…” Starts to cry.
Gabriel: “…did they do anything to you? Do I need to start putting head on spikes?”
Tataru: “I tried contacting Minfilia and the others, but no one would respond... And then Crystal Braves- our own people!- turned on us in the marketplace. F'lhaminn told me to run, and so I did. I ran and I ran until my lungs burned and my feet ached... But I lost my way...and then...”
Gabriel: “This is sounding more and more like a yes to the heads on spikes, Tataru.”
Yugiri: Steps out of the shadows. “I would not advise that, Master Sevatar. Ul’dah is swarming with Brass Blades and Crystal Braves alike, and every one of them has been ordered to find you.”
Gabriel: “I can handle myself against a few turncoats, Yugiri-” Turns to face her and sees her without the mask for the first time. “Oh, uh…”
Yugiri: “Fortunately, I had observed some of the Braves behaving suspiciously beforehand… Hm? Ah, yes, my mask- it was lost in the struggle.”
Tataru: “Pretty, isn’t she?
Gabriel nods silently, not taking his eyes off Yugiri. Tataru narrows her eyes at this.
Tataru: “Anyway, after Yugiri found me, we traveled to Vesper Bay and met up with Urianger. When we told him what had happened, he used his magicks to weave a glamour around the Waking Sands. From the outside, our old headquarters now looks like an abandoned storehouse! The transformation didn't take long, either. Apparently, Urianger started making preparations after the imperial attack, just in case the Empire ever chose to pay us another visit. Good thinking, eh!? Sorry, where was I? Oh yes, so we waited there at the Waking Sands, hoping others would come...but no one else did.”
Gabriel: “We all got separated. In the Royal Promenade at first, and in the sultana’s escape passage later. There was a small army of people I would very much like to go back and kill now.”
Yugiri: “There are far too many, Gabriel. You had to flee them before, you will only get yourself killed now.”
Gabriel: Reluctantly sits down. “Damn it, Yugiri, you just had to go and make sense.”
Tataru: “And you don’t even have your spear and armor! What happened to it?”
Gabriel: “What do you think? The Braves took it.”
Yugiri: “If your fighting ability has been hampered, then that is even more reason not to go back to Ul’dah, Gabriel.”
Gabriel: “Yugiri, I can’t just sit here and do nothing!”
Yugiri: “And I am not asking you to. Rearm and recover. Your opportunity for vengeance will come.”
Gabriel: “I have your word on that?”
Yugiri: “My people are searching for the other Scions even as we speak, but we have met with no success as yet. I had hoped that you might be able to suggest further places to look. Ah, but you should know, the Rising Stones did not share the Waking Sands' good fortune. Only Crystal Braves await you there.”
Gabriel: “Of course they do.” Sits down, head in both hands.
Yugiri: “Be that as it may, we yet have cause to hope, do we not? If the two of you escaped, it is not impossible that the others could have done so as well.”
Gabriel: Wry smile. “Hope is kind of in short supply for the both of us right now, Yugiri.”
Yugiri: “You may have been forsaken by men and women believed true, but rest assured that the people of Doma yet stand with you. We welcome this opportunity to repay our debts, and shall continue our efforts to locate the others and see the Scions restored to their rightful place of honor.”
Gabriel: Smiles for real this time. “All debts have already been more than repaid, Yugiri. If anything, it is we Scions who owe you a debt now.”
Yugiri: “I shall not hear another word of that, Gabriel. You have been a savior to my people and you will never owe us anything.”
Haurchefant: Coming in with more hot chocolate. “Perhaps one might say that there is no debt between friends?”
Gabriel and Yugiri stare at him for a moment.
Gabriel: “…that works.”
Tataru: Looking between Gabriel and Yugiri. “Lord Haurchefant, given that this is our first time staying here, perhaps this would be a good opportunity to show Alphinaud and I to our quarters?”
Haurchefant: “An excellent suggestion, Lady Tataru. This way, if you would?” Leads Alphinaud and Tataru out of the room.
Yugiri: Studying Gabriel’s features. “It occurs to me that I, too, am seeing your face for the first time today. You were always wearing that helmet before.”
Gabriel: “Ah… yes.” Motions toward his delicate Midlander features and long, unkempt dark brown hair. “Gaze upon the sheer boring hideousness that is the Warrior of Light’s true face. You may start throwing rotten fruit now.” Takes a sip of his hot chocolate.
Yugiri: “I believe I can restrain myself, O Comedian of Light.”
Gabriel: Spit take.
Yugiri: “Come. We should find you some proper arms and armor to replace those you lost.
A few minutes later, Gabriel is carrying a mythrite lance and wearing the silver and yellow chainmail of House Fortemps.
Yugiri: “Do you feel better now, Gabriel?”
Gabriel: “Better, yes. Back to normal, no.” Gives Yugiri a pained expression. “They took my soul crystal, Yugiri. Do you know what that means?”
Yugiri: Nods. “The samurai of my homeland use such things as well. As do we shinobi.” Pulls out the glowing scarlet crystal she keeps on a cord around her neck.
Gabriel: “Then you know what losing one does. And you know that it’s basically irreplaceable.”
Yugiri: “Then I shall move to hunt down the traitors with all speed, so that you can take back what is yours.”
Gabriel: Smiles. “It’s really good that there’s no debt between friends, as Haurchefant put it. I don’t think I’d ever be able to repay you if there was.”
Yugiri: “Let me at least do you the service before you even speak of debt, Gabriel.”
Gabriel: “As you wish. So… as your friend, can I hug you?”
Yugiri: Smiles and holds her arms out. “Of course, you may- oof!” Suddenly cut off as Gabriel pulls her into a bear hug.
Notes:
All throughout the bloody banquet, I could only think: where's my lance? I could fight free if I had it! Then I figured the Braves must have taken it.
Also: Haurchefant is the Actual Best. That is all.
Chapter Text
Ishgard, outside the Tribunal
Pompous Noble: “So as I was saying, that heretic was fighting like a man possessed. Even after he took several wounds, he showed no sign of pain- though there was no mistaking the blood.”
Gabriel: Sitting next to the noble on a bench, eating an Ishgardian muffin. “Uh-huh.”
Pompous Noble: “As the fight wore on, it began to soak through his armor, spreading to every ilm of his body. But when it began to rise and envelop him as a mist, I realized it wasn't blood, but something dark and twisted. Ah, But the righteous are not so easily cowed, Halone be praised! I screamed myself hoarse when that Temple Knight slipped past his guard and ran him through.”
Gabriel: Mouth full “Uh-huh.”
Pompous Noble: “Good riddance, I say. Man was not meant to wield such arts! Yet I wonder...was he truly one of those...those...”
Gabriel: Curious now. “One of those what?”
Pompous Noble: “Oh, it matters not. I heard the Temple Knights talking of dumping his corpse in the Brume. By sunrise, it'll be stripped bare and tossed over the walls. It will be as though he never was...and as though we never had this conversation.” Gets up and walks away.
Gabriel: “Well, that was just rude of him.” Stands up and ponders. “Now, on the one hand, Count Edmont asked me very clearly not to get into too much trouble while I’m here… but I’m also really curious all of a sudden…”
The Brume, 5 seconds later
Temple Knight 1: “That's more than far enough for charity. They'll take care of the rest.”
Temple Knight 2: “...And mayhap sooner rather than later. Come on.”
As they leave, Gabriel walks up, whistling.
Gabriel: “Well, you’re not having an especially good day, are you?” Kneels next to him. “Wonder what you did to get on their bad side. The guy who liked the sound of his own voice said heretic, but I don’t see any dragon stuff on you…” Spies the dark red soul crystal glowing next to the body. “Never seen one like that before. Wonder what it’s for…?” Picks it up.
Immediately, Gabriel staggers and starts sees dark blotches in his vision.
Voice from within the crystal: “...Is this it? Is this all that awaits? No... No more. Enough... Open your eyes. Look. Do you see now? Do you see?”
Fray: “Gabriel… Gabriel!”
Gabriel: Had fallen unconscious. “Wha…? AH! I’m up! I’m up! What’s going on? Who are you?” Stands up and puts his fists up.
Fray: “...I've been waiting for you to open your eyes. You all right? You were moaning in your sleep and sweating buckets besides.”
Gabriel: “Oh, I’m fine. The ground looked so comfy, I just decided to have a nap.”
Fray: “…right. Name's Fray, by the way. And no, I'm not a heretic.” Snorts. “Try convincing a Temple Knight drunk on authority of that, eh? Shame the pompous arse got the better of me.” Looks at Gabriel with an inquisitive eye. “But how about you? You touched it, yes? That couldn't have felt good.”
Gabriel: “It?” Looks at soul crystal. “Oh, you mean this. I mean… no, not really, but it feels fine now. Heard a voice coming from in it…”
Fray: “A voice, eh? And a rather distressed one besides...”
Voice in the distance: “Please, someone- anyone!”
Gabriel: Instinctively walks towards it, only for Fray to grab his shoulder.
Fray: “Not so fast. We need to talk about what's happening to you- what's growing within you, before you get carried away.”
Gabriel: Looks down at self. “Not contagious, am I?”
Fray: “There's a darkness within us all- nothing dangerous, mind. In fact, it's quite healthy. But the crystal changes you- gives you the power to channel it. Do it without proper training, however, and... well... it might hurt. So go ahead- ask me to teach you. Ask me to instruct you in the ways of the dark knights, and I will.”
Gabriel: “I was in the market for a new soul crystal, as it happens.”
Fray: “I know you're still worried about that screaming woman, so I'll keep this brief. We dark knights don't care one whit for prestige or pedigree. We are free to follow our hearts- to defend the weak and punish the guilty as we see fit. The law of the land? The authority of a name? These are tools cowards use to escape harm. We have no need of shields figurative or literal. Here- my blade is your blade, my soul crystal your crystal. Go on, take them. You'll need them soon enough.”
Gabriel picks up Fray’s great sword. Looks up to see temple knights laughing and dragging away a young woman. His vision shifts for a moment as the corrupt temple knights briefly appear as Brass Blades, and the young woman as an Ala Mhigan refugee, in his eyes.
Gabriel: Eyes narrow. “Oh, I’ve been waiting for this.”
Meanwhile, in the South Shroud
Yuyuhase: “What the hells do you mean, they won’t supply us? You pranced around with the spear and armor, didn’t you?”
Laurentius: “I did, but… well, it didn’t fool them at all. Miounne told me I didn’t look, sound, or act anything like Gabriel, and then had me thrown out. Bodily thrown out.”
Ilberd: “It’s the same story all over Eorzea. For a man who almost always hid his face behind a mask, Sevatar sure did have a lot of friends. Damn him…”
Over in the shadows, Yugiri allows herself a small smirk as she basks in the schadenfreude of the moment, having been blending in at the Carline Canopy for the incident.
Yuyuhase: “Always wondered why he always wore that thing. Is he some kind of criminal on the run, maybe? Or is it some hackneyed tragic revenge story?”
Ilberd: “Bah, it doesn’t matter. We have Aldynn here now. When we execute him at Halatali, everyone will see…”
Yugiri nods, signals to Higiri and Douware to pull out. She briefly considers tailing Laurentius to steal back the dragoon soul crystal, then decides that to do so would risk compromising the mission. She makes a mental promise to Gabriel that she’ll help him get it back when it’s time to rescue Raubahn. She then makes a note of the Crystal Braves’ numbers and sneaks out of the forest.
Chapter Text
Halatali
Gabriel: “Does this feel like a trap to anyone else?”
Alphinaud: “Not a soul from the Coliseum to be seen. This bodes ill.”
Yugiri: “Take the lead, Gabriel. I shall follow close upon you.”
They keep moving, encountering no opposition until they reach the room where Raubahn is being held.
Yugiri: As the others rush to Raubahn’s side. “The general… but where are his captors? I mislike the look of this.”
Alphinaud: “General!”
Raubahn: “You… came…”
Gabriel: About ready to bring his greatsword down on Raubahn’s shackles.
Yugiri: “Not so fast!” Examines the machine Raubahn is standing on. “He is bound by some manner of magitek device. I dare not force it open- it may well be booby-trapped.”
Alphinaud: “I have heard of such devices. The Crystal Braves will possess the key. Let us split up and look for it.”
Yuyuhase: “That will not be necessary.”
All three turn to look at the new arrival.
Yuyuhase: Waves to Alphinaud. “Hello, Commander.” Leers. “See you brought the Doman bitch with you. And, uh…” Looks at Gabriel, doesn’t recognize him without a mask or helmet. “Pick up a new attack dog in Ishgard, did you? Whatever. Pray do not take this personally, my friends. You are the victims of harsh economic conditions. Happily, you will not suffer for long. This poison will convey you swiftly to the bosom of Thal, where I hope to join you, after the passing of many prosperous years.”
The gate falls shut between the group and Yuyuhase. Greenish mist starts seeping into the room, causing everyone but Gabriel to start coughing.
Yugiri: Trying to shore up Raubahn’s health with magic. “Confound it! The mist stifles my healing!”
Raubahn: “Leave me… save yourselves…”
Yuyuhase: Sneering “Farewell, friends. Oh, and do try to relax. They tell me struggling only makes it worse- what are you doing…?”
Gabriel has been walking towards the gate with his sword drawn the entire time. Upon reaching it, violet flames flare along the length of the blade, and Gabriel gives it a hefty swing at the gate. The steel bars crumple like tinfoil.
Yuyuhase: Eyes widening. “OhshitohshitOHSHIT-!” Starts sprinting away from Gabriel. “Unleash the beasts! They’re loose!”
Alphinaud: “Beasts?!” Greenish slime creatures start dropping into the room. “The mist must be drawing them! No matter. The way is clear!”
Yugiri: “But the mist remains! We must stop it at the source! I shall tend to the general! Pray see to the mist and the key!”
Raubahn: “The Braves… have the key…”
Gabriel: Nods over his shoulder as he steps through the shattered gate. For a few minutes, Yugiri, Alphinaud, and Raubahn hear nothing but the sounds of slime monsters being splattered across the walls, until eventually the gas stops seeping in. Shortly afterward, screams can be heard from that doorway.
Crystal Brave #1: “How did they survive the poison!?”
Crystal Brave #2: “Bah, looks like we’ll just have to finish the job- GAH!”
Crystal Brave #3: “Who is this guy? What is this guy!?”
Crystal Brave #1: “OH SHIT, IT’S SEVET- ARGH!” Decapitation noises.
Gabriel arrives back at Raubahn’s prison with a key card in hand and a lot of blood on his blade.
Gabriel: “Found it!” Hands it to Yugiri, who slots it into the appropriate place in the machine and frees Raubahn.
Raubahn: “My… thanks…”
Alphinaud: “Slowly, General. You are yet weak from your ordeal.”
Yugiri: “Nevertheless, we must quit this place.”
Ilberd: “I should have known. What are clever contrivances to the Warrior of Light?” Gabriel whirls around. “Well done, ‘hero’.”
Alphinaud: Snarls “Ilberd…”
Laurentius is standing next to Ilberd and Yuyuhase, wearing Gabriel’s Drachen armor and wielding Gae Bolg, clearly trying not to shake in fear.
Gabriel: Sighs. “Oh, Laurentius. We both know you shouldn’t be wearing that armor.”
Laurentius: Miserably “I’m no hero, Gabriel. I never was, and never will be.”
Gabriel: “I didn’t ask you to be. Nobody did. I only expected you to be a man. But you couldn’t even manage that.”
Ilberd: Sneers. “Knighthood suits you, Sevatar. First an Azure Dragoon, now… whatever this is."
Gabriel: "...tell me something, Ilberd. Wilred. Was that you? Did you kill him?"
Ilberd: "Pah! Damn fool boy was going around asking all the wrong questions. If he knew our true cause, he would have been honored to die for it!"
Gabriel: "I thought so." Gabriel’s eyes start to glow red with the power of the Dark Knight soul crystal.
Ilberd: "So what now, Ser Knight? Going to charge us in glory and honor?”
Gabriel: “…no. No, I will not.” Starts stalking towards Ilberd. “But I am going to kill you. One by one. I don’t need glory and honor for that.”
Ilberd: Snarls “You mean to struggle on, then? Very well. If you would stand in my way, I will cut you down like all the rest. Come, Scions! Let’s get this over with!” Half a dozen more Crystal Braves tun into the room, weapons at the ready. “The Sultana’s assassins are here! Crystal Braves, to arms!”
The reinforcements charge in at the party, only for most of them to find themselves impaled on spikes of dark energy unleashed by Gabriel. As the two survivors stagger back, Yugiri runs by, stabbing one in the back and slitting the other’s throat. Yuyuhase runs over to try and stab her from behind, only to get pinned in place by Alphinaud’s carbuncle.
Laurentius tries to move in for a stab at Gabriel, only for the dark knight to easily dart out of the way, disarm him, and grab him by the throat. With his other hand, Gabriel rips the dragoon soul stone from the thong around Laurentius’s neck.
Gabriel: “This is mine.” Gabriel then hurls Laurentius over his shoulder at a charging Ilberd, who bats him aside with his shield. Gabriel and Ilberd meet in the middle of the room, clashing blades for several moments, seemingly evenly matched, until Yugiri darts in and slides a knife into Ilberd’s side.
Ilberd: “Gah!” He swipes at Yugiri, who backflips out of the way. He then looks around, seeing that of his soldiers, only Laurentius and Yuyuhase are still alive. The former is fleeing the battlefield, and the latter looks like he’s been clawed up by an angry cat. “This changes nothing!”
Alphinaud: “It is over, Ilberd! Lay down your arms and surrender yourself to justice!”
Ilberd: “Justice!? Justice for what, exactly? ‘Twas not I who assassinated the sultana, boy!”
Alphinaud: “Ere we debate who is responsible for the assassination, I would ask whether an assassination took place at all.”
Gabriel: “Wait, what?”
Ilberd: “Clever little shite…” Looks at Gabriel. “If you think you fight for justice, lad, you best wake up. The truth is, you fight for whoever bloody well tells you to. Can you not see you’re being used!? By the Scions, the city-states, even the Crystal Braves. They none of ‘em care a whit what you want- only what you can do for them.”
Gabriel: Voice is suddenly rather strained “You know nothing about me.” To the side, Alphinaud looks downward in shame.
Ilberd: “I’m the same as you, fool! A pawn to be used as my masters see fit! All I ever wanted was to liberate my homeland, and I ate dirt to make it happen! But what have I accomplished after all these years in servitude? Nothing! Not a bloody thing! If we ourselves are not free- free to think and to act- how are we ever to reclaim our homeland? Know this: there is nothing I would not give to take back Ala Mhigo! NOTIHNG!” Throws down a flashbang, and he and Yuyuhase both dash for the exit.
Alphinaud: “You’ll not get away!” Moves to pursue, but is stopped by Yugiri.
Yugiri: “No, Master Alphinaud. Now is not the time.”
Gabriel: Woodenly “She’s right. We need to get Raubahn out of here.” Walks over and reclaims Gae Bolg.
Raubahn: “I’m but a cripple and a fool, and you still came for me… I’m in your debt.”
Alphinaud: “We are all of us fools of fate, General. Yet even fools have a part to play.”
Gabriel: Shakes himself back to his usual upbeat mood. “On your feet, gladiator. This fight is not yet over.”
Chapter Text
The Waking Sands
Alphinaud: “I had not counted on Prioress Dewlala herself appearing. In my defense, my suspicions regarding the sultana proved more prescient. Much remains to be done, but in rescuing Raubahn, we have taken a vital first step towards resolving matters in Ul'dah.”
Papashan: “Thank you for rescuing General Raubahn. From the bottom of my heart. To behold him now, gaunt and unkempt... It pains me to think of all the hardship he has endured. I shall not forget what you have done for General Raubahn. You have saved more than just a man.”
Gabriel: “Oh, it was my pleasure. I’d been meaning to pay the Braves such a visit for some time now.”
Raubahn: “Indeed. Yet, clearly not everything is as it was. Finally showing your face in public, Gabriel?”
Gabriel: “I wore the Monoa mask everywhere because I liked it, thank you very much!”
Raubahn: Raises an eyebrow. “And the Drachen armet?”
Gabriel: “Dragoons have to wear the helmet at all times. Heustienne was very clear on that!”
Raubahn: Stares for a moment, then stifles a chuckle. “I think she may have been hazing you, lad.”
Gabriel: Silent for a solid five seconds as realization dawns in his eyes. “Oh, son of a… Twelve damn it!” Yugiri fondly pats him on the shoulder. Raubahn starts to laugh but it turns into a coughing fit.
Alphinaud: “General! You still haven’t recovered! Let us get you to a bed!” Alphinaud and Papashan guide Raubahn to the Scions’ old quarters.
Yugiri: “Ah, yes, speaking of which.” She produces a large package from under a table. “I believe this belongs to you.”
Gabriel opens it up to find his Drachen armor, cleaned and repaired from the abuse the Crystal Braves put it through.
Yugiri: “My fellow shinobi found it in a pile near where we believe the Crystal Braves’ exit was. I know you rather wanted it back.”
Gabriel: “I did. Thank you so much.” Picks up the Drachen helm and looks at it. “Back to jumping around like a big old hero…”
Yugiri: Frowns “You should not let Ilberd get under your skin.”
Gabriel: “I know, I know. But… you once said basically the same thing to me that he did. In much kinder words, but still.”
Yugiri: “Yes, I suppose I did.” Bows deeply. “Forgive me, my friend. It was never my intention to cause you distress.”
Gabriel: “Oh, it’s not your fault. It’s just sort of been on my mind lately, I suppose. In a much more intense way than most people experience… ever.”
Yugiri: “…could you please elaborate on this…?”
Gabriel: Scratches back of his neck. “Eheheheh. So… you may have heard about a recent incident in Whitebrim Front…”
One explanation later
Yugiri: Mouth hanging open in horror.
Gabriel: “Yeah, it’s fucked up, isn’t it?”
Yugiri: “That is one way to put it, yes. Gabriel, you cannot keep bottling up your frustration and resentment like this! Not if they are going to come to life and start attacking you!”
Gabriel: “What am I supposed to do, then? Blow up at everyone who asks me for help? I don’t want to turn into Fray here!”
Yugiri: “No, of course, but I do know one thing you can try.”
Gabriel: “What do you have in mind?”
Yugiri: “Shinobi meditation techniques.”
Gabriel: “You do remember how it went the last time I tried to learn shinobi techniques?”
Yugiri: “You would be learning to calm your mind and keep control of your emotions. There will be nothing that might cause you to summon an uncontrollable hellfrog in a populated area this time.”
Gabriel: “Okay, good.”
Yugiri: “Some good tea would help, if there is any here.”
Gabriel: “As a matter of fact, there is. Bought it from Carvallain a few days before the whole mess at the banquet.” Pulls a tin out of his chocobo’s saddlebag.
Yugiri: “Tea from him? I was led to believe he was a spice merchant.”
Gabriel: “That’s what he calls everything he sells, whether it be tea or explosives or actual spices.” Yugiri seems visibly confused by this. Gabriel looks down at the tin, then up at Yugiri. “Er… do you know how to brew this stuff?”
Yugiri: “Do… do you not?”
Gabriel: “No, I don’t… I, uh, actually bought it for you… but, um, then the banquet happened, everything was so hectic, and I kind of just… forgot…?”
Yugiri: Smiles. “That is very thoughtful, Gabriel. Find a kettle and put some hot water on to boil. I will handle the rest.”
Thirty minutes later
Yugiri: “Gabriel, it does tend to work best if you sit still.”
Gabriel: Trying not to fidget “I know, I know, that’s just… not something I’ve ever been good at.”
Yugiri: “The important thing is to not let your mind wander. If a thought passes through your head, acknowledge it, and then let it go. Do not try to chase it. Do that, and your body will follow suit.”
Gabriel: “Aw, but my thoughts are so much fun!”
Yugiri: “And what thoughts would those be?”
Gabriel: “Oh, lots of different things. Frogs, dragons, having my dragoon stuff back, the sweet taste of revenge, you…”
Yugiri: Blushes a bit “Me?”
Gabriel: “Of course, we’re friends! Unless… is that inappropriate or something? I’m sorry.”
Yugiri: Fighting down the blush “No, not at all. It flatters me that I am in your thoughts. And concerns me that I came listed right after vengeance in your mind.”
Gabriel: “Well, it was thanks to you I was able to get it, after all.”
Yugiri: “We could hear you fighting the first wave from the other end of the ruins. I take it you enjoyed yourself?”
Gabriel: “The mood got a bit ruined, near the end…”
Yugiri: “What is your history with Laurentius, anyway? It seemed like you were particularly angry at him.”
Gabriel: “Not angry, just disappointed.” Sighs. “When I first met him, he was a wood wailer. This was when I had just joined the Scions. He’d been selling patrol routes and supply locations to the Garleans. I caught him, and he turned himself in, and was thrown in a cell. Later, when we were forming the Crystal Braves, he’d just gotten out. I thought he’d seen the error of his ways, so I recruited him. More fool I?”
Yugiri: “You offered him a chance at redemption. If he chose to reject it, then he is the fool, not you.”
Gabriel: “I guess… and an inconsiderate bastard besides.” Looks over at his Drachen armor. “The hell did he think he was doing, wearing my armor?
Yugiri: “Actually, he was pretending to be you. It was Ilberd’s scheme, I believe, to maintain the illusion that you were still at the Crystal Braves’ side. To maintain the support of the people.”
Gabriel: “…did it work?”
Yugiri: “Not in the slightest. In fact, the conspicuous failure of the plan was what led us to the Crystal Braves’ location in the first place.”
Gabriel: “I wonder if he tried to actually jump like me? I can’t sense his touch on the soul crystal, so I know he didn’t get that to work for him.” Grins and sets down the helmet.
Yugiri: Smirks and elbows him in the ribs. “Perhaps you need not wear it always now.”
Gabriel: “I’m not living that down, am I?”
Yugiri: Smirk becomes a smile. “Your secret is safe with me.”
Notes:
I pity Laurentius, I really do. He's like a drug addict who tried to recover but relapsed. He seemed to regret backstabbing the Scions almost immediately, but was in too deep to get out.

Revenant’s Toll, after the disbanding of the Crystal Braves
Yugiri: “I feel blessed to have witnessed such a display of camaraderie.”
Gabriel: “Imagine how I felt. Riol and Alianne were two more I recruited myself. After what happened to Wilred… I wasn’t sure if they were even still alive after the mutiny.”
Yugiri: “See? Laurentius matters not. You chose your Braves well.”
Gabriel: “They’re Scions, Yugiri, not Braves. That name is tainted.” Starts loading his Drachen armor into a footlocker. “As is this.”
Yugiri: “Because Laurentius wore it? I assure you, we cleaned it thoroughly.”
Gabriel: “No, actually, I mean the whole dragoon thing in general… oh, right, we haven’t told you about that yet, have we?” Gabriel explains what Hraesvelgr revealed about the origins of the Dragonsong War. Yugiri listens quietly.
Yugiri: “By the kami…” Strokes the helmet. “But what does it matter where the power comes from? It has never served anything but a noble purpose in your hands.”
Gabriel: “The powers of the Azure Dragoon connect me to Nidhogg, Yugiri. I can feel his rage, his hatred. Not as keenly as Estinien, since he’s had them longer, but it’s there all the same. And for the longest time, I thought he was just another mindless monster. Now, I know better, and… I can’t deal with it. Maybe I’m being ridiculous, but I can’t keep using his stolen power in good conscience.”
Yugiri: “Then I pray that the dark swordplay you took up continues to serve you well, and does not endanger you any further.”
Gabriel: “Not having to deal with an evil twin would be nice.” Sighs “First Midgardsomr, now Nidhogg. What is it with dragons and making me question everything I’ve been doing?”
Yugiri: “The ancient king? What did he do?”
Gabriel: “Stripped me of the blessing of light, made me fight ghost dragons, and called me a puny mortal. But the bit that hurt the most was the question he asked me. ‘What have you wrought with your own hands?’ I’ve been turning that question over in my head for… months, now. And the answer I arrive at is always the same. Death. All those amazing heroics everyone tells stories about… end of the day, it always just boils down to me killing things to make everyone’s problems go away.” Sighs. “Maybe Ilberd is right. Maybe I am just a highly efficient attack dog.”
Yugiri: “…I can prove that you are not.”
Gabriel: “Oh?”
Yugiri: “You and the other Scions helped us of your own free will. Moving us to Revenant’s Toll was an idea you and Alphinaud both came up with, you may recall. You gave us a home when nobody else would take us in.” Clasps his hand. “And not once did you have to lift a blade to do it.”
Gabriel: “Huh… I knew there was a reason I liked your people so much!”
Yugiri: “I did see you playing with the children, earlier.”
Gabriel: “Hey, hey. ‘Doman Adventurers’ Guild.’ Get it right.”
Yugiri: Smiles. “My point is that they really look up to you, Gabriel. They would not look up to a simple killer.”
Gabriel: “…how do you do that?”
Yugiri: “Do what?”
Gabriel: “Whenever I feel doubt, or let anything get to me… you make me feel better with just a few words.”
Yugiri: “You mean, the same thing you effortlessly do for almost everyone you meet?”
Gabriel: “…do I do that?”
Yugiri: “Nearly every day, yes.”
Gabriel: Processes this for a moment. “Well… thank you for doing it for me.”
Yugiri: “If you ever need it again, my friend, I’ll be there.”
Gabriel: “…Yugiri? I assume you intend to eventually go back to Doma, drive the empire out, yes?”
Yugiri: “I do not know. My orders are to keep my people safe here. Those orders have not changed.”
Gabriel: “Well, if and when you do go back to that fight… I’ll go with you.”
Yugiri: “What?”
Gabriel: “I want to help you take back your home, help you rebuild it afterward.”
Yugiri: “Gabriel, I cannot ask that of you! Not when you have already been burdened with so much!”
Gabriel: “Killing things is going to be a big part of my life for the foreseeable future. In this case, at least I can build something to go along with it... or something. This all sounded a lot more grandiose in my head.”
Yugiri: “I... I think that is an admirable hope, Gabriel.”
Gabriel: Upbeat again “Ah well, this is all hypothetical at the moment. Got a big army of dragons to deal with first.”
Yugiri: “And I must resume the search for the missing Scions. We have begun properly coordinating our search with the Immortal Flames.”
Gabriel: “Syndicate’s not giving you any trouble, are they?”
Yugiri: “We are all on the same side again, Gabriel.”
Gabriel: “I mean, I guess.” Pouts. “They’re still a bunch of greedy pricks, though.”
Yugiri: Pats him on the shoulder. “Without question, Gabriel. Without question.”

The Rising Stones
Yugiri: “Lady Tataru?”
Tataru: “Oh, Yugiri! What can I do for you?”
Yugiri: Looks around, sees nobody else in the room. “You have known Master Sevatar as long as anyone else here, correct?”
Tataru: “You know you can just call him Gabriel like you do to his face when you think nobody else is watching.” Smirks at Yugiri’s blush. “But yes. I was one of the first Scions to meet him! Only Yda and Papalymo have known him longer.”
Yugiri: “…what does he like to do in his time off?”
Tataru: Smirks wider “Oooh, plotting your first date with him?”
Yugiri: Blushes harder “I- I am sure I have no idea what you mean. I am merely curious.”
Tataru: “Mm-hmm. The way you two look at each other is pretty curious, too.” Laughs. “What are you even so embarrassed about? Hydaelyn knows half of the nobles in Ishgard and Ul’dah seem to want him. He’s always complaining about it!”
Yugiri: “That is-! Just answer the question, please!”
Tataru: “Fine, fine… er… you know, I don’t actually know what he does in his time off. He’s always off on different adventures, I’m not sure he even takes time off.” Looks distressed by this thought.
Yugiri: “Then we shall have to endeavor to give him some.”
Tataru: “Maybe you could try tagging along on one of his adventures?”
Yugiri: “I cannot take leave of my duties to go roaming the lands for weeks on end, Tataru.”
Tataru: “That’s a good point… Oh, have a picnic with him! Picnics are always nice!”
Yugiri: “Yes! Yes, a- a fine idea, Tataru. I shall prepare us a nice meal, and we shall relax in...” Remembers what part of Eorzea she’s in. “Er… would Coerthas or Mor Dhona be a better picnic venue?”
Tataru: “…yes, I see the problem… who knew he would be such a hard man to court?”
Yugiri: Blushes again. “I am not courting him! I simply…” Sighs. “He has expressed a certain… weariness to me of late. I merely wished to help him feel better!”
Tataru: Throws her arms up in shock. “Weariness? My goodness, I never noticed!” Stamps her feet repeatedly. “Gah, I’m a horrible friend!” Thinks for a moment. “There must be something he would just enjoy for its own sake…”
Yugiri: “Actually… there may be one thing… I have a somewhat unusual requisition to place.”
A few weeks later
Gabriel: “The blindfold is a bit weird, Yugiri. You’re not leading me to a surprise party, are you?”
Yugiri: Leading him by the hand “If I told you such a thing, it would not be a surprise, would it?”
Gabriel: “I guess… are we heading towards the stables? It feels like we’re heading towards the stables.”
Yugiri: “Patience, Gabriel. We’re almost there… okay, remove the blindfold.”
Gabriel: Removes the blindfold to see an enormous frog with a saddle on top. “…Yugiri?”
Yugiri: “It was imported from the Gangos jungle… finding a suitable one in Eorzea proved almost impossible. We were only able to find a rental, I am afraid, so you will only have her for today- OH!” Gabriel suddenly hugs her, hard.
Gabriel: “Oh, thank you so much. It’s my nameday come early!”
Yugiri: Struggling to breathe “I am glad that you like it.”
Gabriel: Releases her and climbs into the saddle. Then looks at Yugiri expectantly.
Yugiri: “Go on. Take her out!”
Gabriel: “Are you coming or not?”
Yugiri: “Me?”
Gabriel: “The saddle’s big enough for two. Join in!”
Yugiri: “Oh, uh…” Looks over her shoulder for a moment, then quickly climbs on. “That is certainly… huh.”
Back in the Rising Stones, Tataru hears a whooping Gabriel, cries of alarm giving way to laughter from Yugiri, and the croaking of a giant frog leaping over the rooftops. As Y’shtola marches outside and starts yelling, Tataru grins from ear to ear.
Notes:
Before you ask, yes, Tataru stamping her feet was her doing the Lalafell freaking-out dance.

The Rising Stones, shortly after Omega is unleashed
Gabriel: “Back to Doma? Now?”
Yugiri: “Yes. Gosetsu will brook no further delays… and my lord Hien awaits me.”
Gabriel: “Can’t believe I chose now to commit to a whole other rebellion… I can’t come with you now!”
Yugiri: “I know that you are with me in spirit, Gabriel. That will be more than enough.”
Gabriel: “I know, but… I was looking forward to fighting alongside you properly…” An idea seems to occur to him. “One moment.” Runs upstairs to his quarters and comes back down holding the dragoon soul crystal. “You mentioned dragons represent good fortune in your home. Take it with you. Maybe it’ll bring you good luck, or something. Not like I’ve used it lately, anyway.”
Yugiri: Slips it onto the leather cord next to her ninja soul crystal. “What was it Ishgardians called this again? A lady’s… blessing?”
Tataru: From behind a nearby curtain, whispers “Lady’s favor!”
Gabriel: “Tataru, what are you doing back there?”
Tataru: “Er… there’s nobody here! Pay no attention to the voice behind the curtain!”
Yugiri: “Tataru… this is a private conversation. Please respect that.”
Tataru: “Oh, fine.” Walks out of the room, stopping only to give a big wink to Yugiri.
Gabriel: “The hells was that about?”
Yugiri: “She is a shameless gossip, you know this.” Takes a deep breath. “There… was something I wished to talk to you about before I left.”
Gabriel: “I’m all ears.”
Yugiri: “I know. I have been trying to figure out how to say this for some time, now… I believed I would have longer to work up the nerve… and Tataru’s little eavesdropping stunt there did not help matters…”
Gabriel: “I feel like you know why she was doing that. Why was she doing that?”
Yugiri: “…is it not obvious?”
Gabriel: “…should it be…? Help me out here, Yugiri.”
Yugiri: Opens her mouth, then closes it again. She hesitates for one last moment, then grabs him by the collar and pulls him in for a kiss. After they split apart, Gabriel stares at her with her with his mouth open for several seconds.
Gabriel: “Oh. Oooooohhhhh. Oh.”
Yugiri: “Oh… was that too forward?”
Gabriel: “…no.” Wraps his arms around her and kisses her back. “No, it was just the right amount of forward.”
Yugiri: “This is not something I thought to find when I came to this land as a refugee. Eorzea has proven itself a land of wonders yet again.”
Gabriel: Holds the dragoon soul crystal up between them. “Keep this safe. When we’ve liberated Ala Mhigo, I’m coming to Doma for it.” Winks. “And for you. I’ll cut a bloody swathe through the empire and meet you at the other end of it.”
Yugiri: “You suddenly seem very confident about your chances.”
Gabriel: Grins ear to ear. “With the motivation you just gave me, how could I possibly lose?”
Notes:
Editor's note: A few weeks later, he did, in fact, proceed to lose.
Chapter Text
The Azim Steppe, in the Reunion market
Hien: “Yugiri! Full glad I am to see you alive and well, old friend!”
Yugiri: “My lord Hien.” Drops to one knee. “It brings me joy to see you recovered from your wound.”
Hien: “Oh, come on, Yugiri.” Extends a hand and lifts her to her feet. “You know there is no need for that. Tell me, how fare the refugees you guided across the sea?”
Yugiri: “We made landfall in the distant realm of Eorzea, my lord, where we were fortunate enough to find kind souls to take us in.” Unconsciously toys with the dragoon soul crystal. “A noble order, the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, extended us the hand of friendship when others turned us aside. With their help, in the land of Mor Dhona, our exiled people have built a new home for themselves.”
Hien: Looking at the soul crystal “Did they teach you a new martial art, as well? I am not familiar with that form of soul crystal.”
Yugiri: “Oh, no… this was a gift from one of the Scions. He thought it would a token of good fortune on my journey.”
Hien: “He must be a confident warrior, to send away such a large part of his power with you.”
Yugiri: “He has another.”
Hien: “Multiple soul crystals? Why, then he must be a very skilled warrior!”
Yugiri: Slight smile on her face. “He is. The most skilled I think I have ever met. As well as the bravest, the kindest…” Laughs a little. “Oft the foolhardiest…”
Hien: Small shite-eating grin. “Yugiri? Is there something you are neglecting to mention here…?”
Yugiri: Blushes. “Am I that obvious?”
Hien: Teasingly “Did you bring him home with you?”
Yugiri: “Alas, no. He wished to come, but his own land has gone to war with Garlemald, and he felt obligated to stay and fight.”
Hien: “And now we arrive at the reason you have come here.”
Yugiri: “Sire…?”
Hien: “You want me to return, that I might lead yet another revolt against the empire. Is that correct?”
Yugiri: “Do you not wish to do so, my lord?”
Hien: “I do not wish to bring further suffering to my people, Yugiri. I remember how Garlemald shattered us when last we rose up.”
Yugiri: “…do you not wish to see our oppressors cast off, Sire?”
Hien: “That shall be up to her people, not me. If Doma yet thirsts for the blood of patriots and tyrants, I shall offer unto her my blade. But if she has had her fill of bitter draughts, I will offer unto her conquerors my head.”
Yugiri: “No true son or daughter of Doma would ever accept such a sacrifice!”
Hien: “I would not throw them into another thresher for a war they do not want.”
Yugiri: “They will wish your death far less!”
Hien: “Can you say that for sure, my friend?”
Yugiri: “How could it be otherwise?”
Hien: “There is nothing more dangerous than an assumption, Yugiri. Go back to Doma. Learn the truth of her heart and then return to me.” Smiles. “But first, tell me about these Scions. I would learn of these people to whom we owe so much.”
Chapter Text
At the House of the Fierce
Yugiri: “Gabriel, I do hope you have taken this opportunity to rest and recover.”
Gabriel: Pulls her in for a kiss “Dunno what this ‘rest’ thing is, but I’ve had some interesting storytime with one of your agents.” Points a thumb over his shoulder towards the main meeting room. “Looting swords from the battlefield? I could have sworn that was forbidden in legion regulations.”
Yugiri: “It is well that you spoke with one of the survivors of that massacre. To defeat one's foe, one must first understand his true nature.”
Gabriel: “Honestly, I feel like I understand him less now. About the only thing I know for sure is he’s a one-man army.” Shrugs. “From what little interaction I had with them, Baelsar and Hydrus always had a sense of… honor and pragmatism, I guess? I suppose I was expecting more of that.”
Yugiri: “As the Ala Mhigan Resistance has struggled, so too has the Doman Liberation Front. More so, perhaps, given the precarious position in which we find ourselves in the wake of our doomed rebellion. We are few, and our enemies legion. We are weak, and they strong. Yet with your help, I believe that there is little we cannot achieve... I only hope the depth of our predicament has not shaken your commitment to our cause.”
Gabriel: “Never. For one thing, you’re here. For another, I really want a rematch.”
Yugiri: “You... relish the thought of facing that monster again? But of course- the hero of Eorzea fears no foe!” Playfully prods his chest.
Gabriel: “I’ve built a career on killing things I have no business being able to. If I’ve learned one thing, it’s that everything has a weakness. We just need to find his.”
Yugiri: “And what about you, Gabriel? Have you been doing well?”
Gabriel: “Well enough.”
Yugiri: “Have you been keeping up with your meditations?”
Gabriel: “…”
Yugiri: Squints “Gabriel. Have you been keeping up with your meditations?”
Gabriel: “…I, er… may have… forgotten to do them entirely?”
Yugiri: “…” Rolls up a scroll and bops him over the head with it.
Gabriel: “Yeah, that’s fair.”
Yugiri: “Tell me Fray has not been attacking people again.”
Gabriel: “You may rest assured; Fray has been on his best behavior.”
Yugiri: “That is good.”
Gabriel: “But there’s a new one called Myste.”
Yugiri: “Oh, in the name of...”
Gabriel: “But! He hasn’t been attacking anyone! In fact, he seems to just want to help people.”
Yugiri: “Then he is definitely a part of you.”
Gabriel: “He conjures visions, to try and help others deal with loss, find closure. Sidurgu doesn’t like him… at all… but he seems to be benevolent enough.”
Yugiri: “You once thought Fray trustworthy. And then he tried to take you over, and half of Whitebrim Front ended up in the infirmary.”
Gabriel: “That’s true, but… I don’t actually know how to get rid of Myste.”
Yugiri: “Oh, Gabriel.” Sits down next to him, wraps her arms around his neck. “How do you keep getting into these bizarre situations?”
Gabriel: “I’ve been wondering that myself. Do I have an invisible “torment me” sign floating above me, or something?”
Yugiri: “It would explain much. Promise me, when this war is over, you’ll take something resembling a break.”
Gabriel: “I said I’d help rebuild Doma afterward, didn’t I?”
Yugiri: “That is not quite a break, Gabriel. But I will take what I can get with you.”
Chapter Text
Shortly after the assassination attempt on Zenos
Yugiri: Clutching her broken ribs “Ugh…”
Isse: “It’s all right. Here, have some water.” Hands her a waterskin, which she sips from gratefully.
Gosetsu: “’Tis naught that will not heal in time.”
Alisaie: “I don’t think we were followed… Gods… I have no idea what was going through that man’s head, but I am heartily glad he decided to leave.”
Gabriel: “I think I might actually have some idea, now.”
Alisaie: “Oh, right… thank you for reminding me.” Stands up on a small boulder so she can look Gabriel in the eye without looking up, then dope slaps him. “You! Two! Idiots! What were you thinking!?”
Gabriel: “That we had a golden opportunity to kill the prince?”
Alisaie: “By just charging off like you did!?” Jabs him in the chest with a finger. “The power of love is not a substitute for proper planning and preparation, Gabriel!”
Gabriel: “We were winning until he pulled out that red sword of his!”
Alisaie: “So you were winning until you weren’t!” Double take “Wait, red sword? What red sword? I don’t remember a red sword.”
Gabriel: “I don’t think he had it before. We had him on the ropes for a bit in that fight. Then, he pulled it out, there was red energy all around his body, and it was like we couldn’t even scratch him.”
Alisaie: “Interesting… so if we manage to steal it from him or disable it, you may be able to fight him… okay, you found a potential weakness. That is something, at least.”
Yugiri: “I recognized the craftsmanship. It was of Kojin make. A gift from his allies in the Ruby Sea, perhaps?”
Gabriel: “Well, anyway, I think I have another weakness of his.”
Alisaie: “Do tell.”
Gabriel: “He really wants a good fight. And he’s willing to make some very poor decisions to get it.” Wipes a bit of blood off his armor. “Walking away and letting us live made no tactical sense whatsoever. But he did it anyway, practically begged me to recover and get stronger, because he saw potential in me as a worthy opponent, or some such.”
Alisaie: “At which point he might just crush you again!”
Gabriel: “At which point a hidden thaumaturge battalion blows him to hell. I’m not an idiot, Alisaie.”
Alisaie: “That is an opinion you are having.”
Yugiri: “If you must be angry with someone, Alisaie, I ask that you direct it at me. The attack was my idea, Gabriel merely joined me.”
Alisaie: “…I suppose what’s done is done. And at least we seem to have gotten some useful information out of it. And rallied your kinsmen, to boot.” Snickers. “Don’t thank us, by the way. Thank Alphinaud. He's at the House of the Fierce, patiently awaiting your gratitude. You should've seen the way he turned pale when he heard about Yugiri's plan- and how you of all people had decided to help her. He was in such a panic, barking orders, calling for a squadron to be assembled-”
Gosetsu: “As were you.”
Alisaie: “I was rather composed, as I recall. Though that is neither here nor there…”
The party makes its way back to Namai, where Gabriel and Yugiri are both treated for their injuries overnight.
Namai Maiden: “How are you feeling, my Lady?”
Yugiri: “Much the better for my comrades’ ministrations, and your most generous hospitality. You need not worry.”
Namai Maiden: “Good. If there’s anything else we can do for the two of you- anything at all- just ask.”
Gabriel: Nods while munching on a persimmon. As the rest of the villagers leave, he motions to Yugiri. “You know, in all the excitement going after Zenos, we forgot to eat dinner last night?”
Yugiri opens her mouth to respond, then stops when her stomach rumbles. She grabs a persimmon and starts eating as quickly as dignity will allow. Then, she sees Gosetsu and Alisaie, and gets up to talk to them in spite of her injuries still paining her.
Yugiri: “Gosetsu, Mistress Alisaie- I owe you an apology. I acted with reckless disregard for my own safety, and endangered I know not how many others in so doing.” Looks down in remorse. “Scorning your wise counsel, I knowingly defied our master’s wishes, and left you no choice but to follow suit.”
Gosetsu: “Nonsense. I followed our master’s orders to the letter. Consider once more his words, and the intent therein. In offering his head, he but sought to shield his people from harm- loyal retainers included. You must value your life more highly, shadow-walker.”
Gabriel: Mouth full “Does that mean you guys aren’t mad at us anymore?”
Alisaie: “Oh, I’m still furious in ways that words could never hope to express.” Sighs and rolls her eyes. “On the other hand, your recklessness did serve as an inspiration to many. Mayhap you should not be so hard on yourself…” Smiles a bit. “In any event, Lady Yugiri, if you must apologize profusely, it seems only right that you expend as much effort thanking the one person who supported your plan from the first.”
Yugiri: “That it does. Gabriel, there are no words which will suffice- but thank you.”
Gabriel: “There’s no need for words between us. Thank me by finishing your breakfast. You’re supposed to be the one nagging me about self-care, for goodness sakes!”
Lyse: Running up with Alphinaud “Aaaaaaaand there they are!”
Alphinaud: “Twelve be praised! When we learned of your rather questionable plot to assassinate Zenos, I feared we would need to recruit a new primal slayer!”
Yugiri: Mutters “It would be nice if you did that all the same.”
Lyse: “I’m sorry we couldn’t be there. Alisaie made me swear to stay behind no matter what. I think she was worried I’d hurl myself at Zenos the moment I set eyes on him.”
Alisaie: When everyone looks at her. “…what?”
Gabriel: Mouth full again “Yeah, we just tried that. Mixed results all around. Next time I think we should try heavy magical artillery.”
Alisaie: “Please do next time.”

Overlooking Mol Iloh
Gosetsu: “You are none the worse for your time in the wilderness! On the contrary, I would say you have improved.”
Hien: Shrugs “Come now, your victories still far exceed mine. Or have you forgotten all the times you trounced me as a boy?”
Gosetsu: Looking morose. “I… feared I would not see you again.”
Hien: Small smile. “A life so fortuitously saved should be spent wisely. Without regret would I have traded it for our people’s amnesty, had it been their will. Instead, they have called for the sword, and so that is what I must be. Until this blade is broken, I can but carve a path forward.” Smirks. “Were you truly so concerned for my well-being? You never showed it when we used to spar.”
Gosetsu: Chuckles “How you cried when you lost. And when your mother tried to comfort you. And when you inevitably came at me once more, swinging your wooden sword wildly… Mina’s little Master Shun. What a fine young man you’ve become!”
Hien: Voice takes on a slight whine. “A man should not be addressed by his childhood name. I’ve told you about that before!”
Both hear a snicker from down the hill. They turn to see Gabriel approaching.
Hien: “Ah, the mask slips! And I was so close to cultivating a winning persona.”
Gabriel shrugs and grins wider.
Gosetsu: “There will be time enough for putting on airs after you have returned in triumph to Doma. Now is the time to show our true character.”
Gabriel: “‘Shun’, was it?”
Hien: “…yes, yes, ‘tis a name my parents gave me as a child- but I should like to think I have long since outgrown it!” Grins back. “But as you seem determined to bring it back into use, I believe a match is in order. If I win, you will be honor-bound to divulge one of your darkest secrets!”
Gabriel: Laughs. “And if I win?”
Gosetsu: “More childhood stories from me!”
Gabriel: “Oh, I accept.” Stands across from Hien and draws his greatsword. “I should warn you, I’ve only known two men alive who can call themselves my equal on the battlefield.”
Hien: “Is that overconfidence I sense?”
Gabriel: “By the twelve, I hope not! Yugiri promised nobody would ever know mine!” Gabriel lunges in for a stab, which Hien twists out of the way of. Hien tries to counter with a neck slash but is shoulder-checked away before he can follow through.
Hien: “A better secret-keeper none could ask for.” Gets back into a ready stance.
Gabriel: “Unfortunately, there are three others who know. One of them is the general of the Eorzean Alliance.”
Hien: Eyes twinkling “So this is classified information, is it?”
Gabriel: “Does that whet your appetite?”
Hien: “Greatly.” Hien darts in for a slash at Gabriel’s leg, which bounces off a barrier of dark magical energy. He is forced to pull back as dark spikes jab out of the ground at him. “Goodness, this is sinister-looking. How do you even lift that sword?”
Gabriel: “Magic. It has to be enormous. A regular sword would shatter from this much aether. I’m what’s known as a dark knight in my own lands- I guess dark samurai would be sort of an equivalent here.”
Gosetsu: “Knights and samurai are not quite the same thing, Master Sevatar.”
Gabriel: “Pray forgive me my simple analogy, then.”
Hien: “You are called the Warrior of Light, yet you use such dark arts? Ironic.”
Gabriel: “I was going through a dark time in my life when I came upon this crystal.”
Hien: “You seemed rather excited by the prospect of the Nadaam.”
Gabriel: “I’ve developed a taste for tournaments. It’s a chance to cut loose without having to actually kill anyone. A refreshing change from my usual job.”
Hien: “And what is the other crystal? The one you gave to Yugiri for a time?”
Gabriel: “Oh, that…” He grips the dragoon soul crystal tightly. In a blue flash, Gabriel’s black and gold coat takes on a more purple and silver color, while the large greatsword is replaced by a halberd with a head made to look like a coiling dragon. “That of the dragoon. Spear work backed by the strength of a dragon.”
Hien: “…show me.”
Gabriel suddenly jumps twenty feet in the air and comes down on Hien, spear point first, with an explosion . Hien dashes out of the way and goes in for a slash at Gabriel’s midsection, only for Gabriel to backflip onto a higher cliff.
Hien: Laughs. “I’ve been wanting to see what it could do for some time, now! I must say, it does not disappoint!”
Gabriel: “It’s an old, old skill, with a storied history.” Jumps back down to the ground and shifts back to his dark knight gear. “A very bloody one, as well. I don’t really use it much, these days.” Smiles a little. "Using it to kill the corrupt archbishop of Ishgard was satisfying as all hells, though."
Hien: “I will not pry. The man who saved so many of my people and stole the heart of one of my most devoted lieutenants deserves some privacy.”
Gabriel: “I saved… Hien, I think Yugiri may have only told you half the story.”
Hien: “Oh?”
Gabriel: “She saved us from the Crystal Braves mutiny and stole my heart in so doing.” Immediately, he plunges at Hien and swings his sword down at his head. Hien parries the blade and counters with an upward slash, staggering Gabriel back.
Hien: “You are right, she did not mention this.”
Gabriel: “The Crystal Braves were a private military force that we started putting together when it became clear that we Scions were no longer enough on our own.” His eyes flash red for a moment. “In the end, they betrayed us. For money, mostly. They framed us for regicide and marked us for death.” Starts to smile at this. “Yugiri, and the rest of your people, stayed true when our own people didn’t. She helped bring down the traitors and led the search when the Scions were scattered.”
Hien: “…I see. I am glad to hear she represented us well.” Sheathes his sword.
Gabriel: “After the banquet where it all happened… when she showed up at our sanctuary having rescued our receptionist, I damn near kissed her then and there. She wasn’t the only one feeling indebted.”
Hien: Laughs “At this point, it all seems rather even to me. And now you are here to shift the debt back to us!” Unsheathes and swings sword in one motion, which Gabriel parries, suddenly cautious.
Gabriel: “A close friend of mine put forward that there is no debt between friends.”
Hien: “A wise friend indeed. And the meditations?”
Gabriel: Rubs back of neck “Oh… that. Yeah… pitfall of dark knighthood? Your darkest emotions might literally come to life and start attacking people if you’re not careful.”
Hien: “And Yugiri fixed that too?”
Gabriel: “Not ‘fixed it’ so much as ‘helped me get a handle on it’, but the result was about the same.”
Hien: “My old friend has acquitted herself well in exile, then. Good.” His eyes go wide as Gabriel suddenly shifts to his dragoon gear again and starts swinging Ryuhinge at Hien. The lance flares blue with each swing, the spectral form of a dragon claw superimposed over it. Hien fends off the first two strikes but is disarmed by the third. He puts his hands up with the lance's tip at his throat. “It would seem you have won this bout.”
Gabriel: Pulls his lance away and smiles. “I didn’t steal Yugiri away from you, did I?”
Hien: Laughs and shakes his head. “No, no. Any such relationship between her and I would be improper when she is my subordinate.” Picks up sword. “…who is the other?”
Gabriel: “Pardon?”
Hien: “The other warrior you consider an equal. I gather that Zenos is one of them. Who is the other?”
Gabriel: “Oh. That would be Estinien Varlineau, Azure Dragoon of Ishgard.”
Hien: “Another dragoon?”
Gabriel: “The best of them. An unmatched dragon slayer during the Dragonsong war.”
Hien: “I don’t suppose you brought him here too?”
Gabriel: Shakes his head, looking at the dragoon soul crystal reflectively. “I don’t actually know what he’s doing right now. He snuck out of his hospital room a few days after the final battle.”
Gosetsu: Laughs. “Stubborn warriors are alike the world over, it would seem! Now, you’ve spent this whole time telling us of yourself, but as the winner of the bout, I believe you are owed an embarrassing story of my lord.”
Hien: “Oh, no.”
Gabriel: “Shall I get Lyse and Cirina? Spread the embarrassment around?”
Hien: “No! No, the deal was you would hear it. Nobody else.”
Notes:
I get why they faded to black for the duel. That doesn't mean I didn't want to see it. Ah, well. Free fanfic fodder!

The House of the Fierce
Hien: “Much has changed in my absence. The state of the enclave, in particular, concerns me. But it would seem Alphinaud understands the importance of ensuring their safety. You Scions are no ordinary mercenaries, that much is plain.”
Gabriel: Grins “Was it not plain already? I’m hurt.”
Hien: “I thought you might be a special case, or something!”
Yugiri: “I am glad to see you two are getting along.”
Hien: “Yugiri, stop me before I start gushing about his performance in the Nadaam. I’ll seem unlordly!”
Yugiri: “I well understand the temptation, my lord. Gush away.”
Gabriel: “Oh… uh…” Rubs back of neck.
Hien: “He stopped a massive axe blade from hitting me… with his hand. Caught it right in his hand! And then there was a giant purple magic flash, the axe was shattered, and the Oronir chieftain was flat on his back!”
Gabriel: A bit embarrassed by all the direct praise “All I was thinking was: ‘We need to impress the Xaela, right?’”
Gosetsu: “Impress them you did. Lady Sadu couldn’t stop staring at you in wonder after that!”
Yugiri: “Lyse tells me Cirina fought in the Nadaam as well.”
Gabriel: Mouths ‘thank you’ to her.
Hien: “Indeed!”
Yugiri: “I would not have taken her for a warrior. Appearances can indeed be deceiving.”
Hien: “The Oronir chieftain did not take her for a warrior, either. He took two poisoned arrows to the arm for that mistake.”
Yugiri: “Poisoned arrows in a tournament?”
Gabriel: “Blame the Elder Gods. They told her to use them, apparently.”
Yugiri: “It would seem this Oronir chieftain suffered a great deal of abuse in the melee.”
Gabriel: “Ah, he got a bit of his own back when the imperials showed up. Beat Yotsuyu’s thug senseless with his bare hands and took his hammer.”
Hien: “Ah, yes, I’ve been meaning to ask you about that. He seemed to be after you in particular. Called you his dearest enemy.”
Gabriel: “I vaguely remember defeating him a couple of times in Eorzea. Guess I ruined his career in the process.” Looks reflective. “I don’t even know his name…”
Yugiri: “Uncommonly inconsiderate of you.”
Gabriel: “Yeah, I suppose it is… eh. Fuck him.”
Yugiri: “A sound argument.”
Hien: “Well, this has been an excellent talk, but I must tour Namai village. The villagers would no doubt like to see me in person.”
Yugiri: “Out in the open, my lord?”
Gosetsu: “I will be escorting him, Yugiri. He’ll be quite safe.”
Hien: “And I must insist that that you two get some rest. We’ve days of preparation ahead of us.” Bows to both, and leaves. Yugiri looks slightly worried.
Gabriel: “He’ll be fine, Yugiri. A little walk outside won’t kill him.”
Yugiri: Face eases. “I know, I know. I cannot be at his side every moment; I must trust my comrades to keep him safe.” Looks over his shoulder at him and smiles. “But now that we are alone…” She leaps into his arms and kisses him. “I was worried about you, too. It was all I could do not to rush to your side in the Steppe when our spies reported that an Imperial force had been dispatched there.”
Gabriel: “Oh, ye of little faith. It was me, backed by an army of Xaela warriors. They never had a chance.”
Yugiri: “I know, I know. Speaking of the Xaela, though… that Sadu woman that Gosetsu mentioned. Could not take her eyes off you, was it?”
Gabriel: “I think that was just because I humiliated the man she hates.”
Yugiri: “Well, neither of us can speak for her. But I prefer to be on the safe side.” Grabs him by the collar and drags him in close. “Shall we?”
Gabriel: Stares for a moment before realizing what she’s talking about. Then, he smiles. “…well, Hien did say get some rest, after all.”

The Doman Enclave, after the destruction of Doma Castle
Yugiri: In tears of joy “It was not for naught… it was not for naught…”
Gabriel: “He knows how to make a good speech, I’ll give him that.” Cheeky grin. “Maybe we’ll steal it once Ala Mhigo follows suit.”
Yugiri: Jabs him in the chest with a finger. “Don’t you dare. That was our speech. Go find your own.”
Gabriel: “Ah, well. We’ll have plenty of time to come up with one on the journey home.”
Yugiri: “You are leaving already? Will you not stay for the festivities?”
Gabriel: “I’d like to, but I can’t. The Scions all agree: we need to get to Ala Mhigo as soon as possible and get things moving again there.”
Yugiri: “Of course, of course… I suppose I did not anticipate how difficult the parting would be.”
Gabriel: “Oh, don’t make it sound so final. I’ll be back when this is all over. I told you I’d help rebuild this place, didn’t I?”
Yugiri: “…you promise?”
Gabriel: “Of course I do! The woman I love is here!” Snaps fingers. “Oh, right. I love you. Have I mentioned that?”
Yugiri: Laughs. “The implication was there, but it is good to hear it all the same. I love you too, Gabriel.”
Gabriel: “Well, I’ll say it again. I love you, and I’ll see you soon.”
Two days later, in Kugane
Gabriel: “Okay, this is a bit sooner than I was expecting.”
Tataru: Grabs Gabriel and Yugiri’s arms and all but shoves them both onto the deck. “Hurry up, you lot! The ship’s about to weigh anchor!”
Hien: “It seems our time is at an end. Go well, my friends- and may we meet again under a western sky.”
Gabriel: As the ship pulls out of port “…Yugiri?”
Yugiri: Smirks at Gabriel “Yes?”
Gabriel: “Did you know this was coming, when I told you we were leaving?”
Yugiri: Laces her fingers through his “I may have had some idea.”
Gabriel: Exaggerated “And you let me suffer two entire days, thinking we’d be parted on a long campaign… oh! Your cruelty and malice know no bounds!”
Yugiri: “I would love to make it up to you. Alas, we've no privacy on this ship.”
Gabriel: “Yes we do. East Aldenald company ship. As a Scion, I get my own cabin. Which I guess is also yours now.”
Yugiri: “Really?”
Gabriel: “Lolorito’s been trying to give us the royal treatment since we arrived in Kugane. Being ‘the man who stabbed the Scions in the back’ has not been good for his business relationships back home, as I hear.”
Yugiri: “Oh…” Sly smile. “That may change things.”
Gabriel: Half bow “Shall I help you bring your luggage to our quarters, my lady?” Stands up as a thought occurs to him. “Wait… where is our luggage?”
Yugiri: “What? It is right… wait, where is it?”
Back at the Kugane Pier
Hien: “Lady… Tataru, was it?”
Tataru: “Ah, yes, Lord Hien!” Bows. “An honor and a pleasure to meet you!”
Hien: Bows. “Likewise, my lady. I noticed you seemed very eager to see your comrades off.”
Tataru: “But of course! We all have urgent business to attend to, and they do need to get to Eorzea with all speed.”
Hien: “Naturally. But do you not think you may have rushed them onboard just a little too quickly?”
Tataru: “What makes you say that?”
Hien: Points at the luggage lying forgotten on the pier.
Chapter Text
Ala Mhigo, 2 weeks after the Liberation
Laurentius and Yuyuhase are sitting in a prison cell, awaiting execution, when he suddenly hears keys rattling. The cell door opens.
Yuyuhase: Looks up “Ah, time for more gruel, or…?” The rest of the question dies in his throat as the Warrior of Light steps into his cell.
Laurentius: Not meeting his eye. “I suppose it’s too much to hope for that you’re here to set us free?”
Gabriel: “In a way, I am.”
Yuyuhase: “Well, about time! Can’t believe this his how Eorzea pays its heroes! This whole liberation business would never have happened if not for- urk!” Goes silent as Gabriel’s sword point is suddenly at his throat.
Laurentius: “…okay, do it.”
Gabriel: “Giving in just like that?”
Laurentius: “Just end it. I know what I did. You gave me a second chance, and I threw it away for money. And then at the Wall, I…” Gulps. “I can’t be forgiven. I know that.” As Gabriel is looking at him, Yuyuhase tiptoes over to the open door, finds Lyse waiting outside with crossed arms and a raised eyebrow, and tiptoes back to his spot.
Gabriel: “You’re right. You can’t be. And I can’t help you anymore.” His eyes soften. “I’ll make it painless.”
Laurentius nods and closes his eyes.
Gabriel: Raising his sword for a decapitating strike. “Who knows? Maybe in the next life, you’ll get another chance.”
Laurentius swallows and starts trembling a little.
Gabriel: “If you do… don’t waste it this time.”
True to his word, Laurentius feels no pain. Yuyuhase looks uneasily at his head rolling along the floor.
Yuyuhase: “So… I suppose I’m next, right?”
Gabriel shakes his head, gathers up Laurentius’s remains, and walks out of the cell.
Yuyuhase: “What…? I thought…”
Gabriel: “I just came for Laurentius. Ala Mhigo will do whatever it decides with you.”
Lyse: Shutting and locking the cell. “If it helps any, you’ll probably be executed anyway.”
Yuyuhase: “Oh… great…”
Chapter Text
The Doman Enclave, after reconstruction is complete
Yugiri: “I must say, I did not expect to be found. What has brought you all this way?”
Gabriel: “Well… you may have heard the commotion in the Ten Thousand Stalls a few minutes ago…”
Yugiri: “It was difficult to miss. What happened?”
Gabriel: “The Buduga happened. Again. And somehow they got me involved.”
Yugiri: “Pardon? Dragged into a game of chase between Lord Hien and the Buduga…”
Gabriel: “Thus far, it has taken out three food stalls, four road signs, and some poor sod’s laundry.”
Yugiri: “…And you sought a moment’s respite?” Laughs
Gabriel: “Even I need them sometimes.”
Yugiri: Laughing harder “Forgive me, I meant no offense. Just the thought that he could tire out even a great hero such as you… My lord is truly hopeless.”
Gabriel: “Hey, I didn’t say it wasn’t funny!”
Yugiri: Wipes the tears from her eyes “But… I do you discredit. To us, you are more than just the savior of Eorzea and Doma. Though your inimitable feats raise you high above us, and we cannot help but regard you with awe, we see you first as a dear friend.” Melts into Gabriel’s arms. “When we arrived as refugees, you were among the few who proffered the hand of succor. To reflect on those days is enough to warm my heart. For your kindness, I thank you.”
Gabriel: “…Friends, huh?”
Yugiri: Kisses him “You know what I mean, my love.”
Gabriel: “I hope so. Because if I’ve misread our relationship, then this next part is going to be really awkward.”
Yugiri: “Oh? What next part might this be?”
Gabriel: Suddenly nervous. “So…” Silent for a long moment. “I was actually looking for you before the Buduga thing happened… was hoping to get you alone…” Rubs the back of his neck. “It’s a bit harder to say it than I thought… you’ve always been the proactive one when it comes to us…”
Yugiri: “Take all the time you need.”
Gabriel: Nervous laugh. “Honestly, I’m just stalling at this point.” Holds up a red coral ring.
Yugiri: “It is beautiful.” Looks closely. “I recognize Tataru’s handiwork- wait, is that coral from Sui-no-Sato?”
Gabriel: “Yes.”
Yugiri: “Gabriel… this is so thoughtful…” Cups it in her hand. “A piece of home…”
Gabriel: “…you don’t actually know what this signifies in Eorzea, do you?”
Yugiri: “…I must confess that I do not.”
Gabriel: “Crap, now I have to actually say it…” Hyperventilating slightly.
Yugiri: “You are uncommonly nervous.”
Gabriel: “Yeah, don’t remind me.” Hesitates a moment longer, swallows, then blurts out without breathing. “Will you marry me?”
Yugiri: Stares at him, processing what he said. Looks between him and the ring, then back to the ring. Then she lunges at him, pinning him to the wall. Gabriel squawks in surprise before she silences him with a kiss. “Will that suffice for an answer?”
Gabriel: “…that was a ‘yes’, right?”
Yugiri: Beams “Wholeheartedly yes.”
Gabriel: Practically collapses from relief. “Oh, by the Fury, that was the most nerve-wracking thing I’ve ever done.” Smiles and kisses her. “And the most rewarding.”
Yugiri: “We will have time to discuss… a lot of things later, my love.” Slides the ring onto her finger. “…Now then, lest we forget the Buduga.” The chaos of the chase has only gotten louder over the course of the conversation.
Gabriel: “Oh, right, they’re still doing that.”
Yugiri: “My duty is to protect my lord, and I shall have to return to his side… but once this is resolved, I shall find you again. We’ve all night to spend the festivities together.”

Chapter Text
The Ghimlyt Front
Feo Ul: Appears in the middle of the military camp holding an envelope as large as she is “…have words with him when I get back. Forgetting his lovely branch for weeks and then using me as a common message service… just… ugh!”
Pipin: Nearly drops the papers he was holding when a tiny orange pixie girl appears right in front of him. “…may I help you, madam?”
Feo Ul: “My sapling sent me here to give a letter to someone.”
Pipin: Very confused. “You… have a message to deliver?”
Feo Ul: Looks directly at her surroundings for the first time, and recoils in shock. “Aie! My sapling didn’t say I’d be going to war!”
Pipin: Visibly mentally flailing “Er… who is the message for?”
Feo Ul: “Oh! Yes. Er…” Looks at the name on the envelope. Unfortunately, she cannot actually read. “Umm… he said she walked in mist?”
Pipin: “Er… you mean Mistwalker?”
Feo Ul: “Yes, that was it!”
Pipin: “Ah- you want Lady Yugiri, then! I believe she is meditating on the walls at the moment. It would not be meet for you to interrupt her, but if you leave your letter with me, I can- where did you go?”
Feo Ul is already halfway to the wall. At her destination, Yugiri is sitting cross-legged atop a guard tower with her eyes closed. She is perfectly still as she senses a small flapping thing start hovering near her face.
Yugiri: Smiles. “Alas, little bird, I’ve no seeds for you today.” Puts up a hand for the ‘bird’ to perch on and opens her eyes. Sees Feo Ul hovering in front of her face. “…you are not a bird.”
Feo Ul: “So you’ve got a brain, then. Puts you one up over my sapling. This is from him.”
Yugiri: Sees the handwriting on the envelope and smiles. “Oh! You were sent by Gabriel, then?”
Feo Ul: “My lovely sapling did send this for you, aye. He was very insistent that you get it.”
Yugiri: “Your… sapling?”
Feo Ul: “He is my sapling, and I am his branch!” Eyes Yugiri. “What are you, I wonder…?”
Yugiri: “…I am his betrothed.”
Feo Ul: “What!? No. Out of the question. He’s my sapling. If you take him away, I’ll have no one to play with!” Looks Yugiri over again. “But you are really pretty… you can be his flower, I guess.”
Yugiri: “I am… honored?”
Feo Ul: Shoves the envelope in her face. “Well? Read it already!”
Yugiri: Still very confused but also smiling, tears open the envelope.
‘Dear Yugiri,
I hope you’re doing well at home. Time is apparently all weird between worlds, so I don’t really know how long it’s been for you. For me, it’s been weeks, and for the other Scions, it’s been years. I miss you a lot already.
It’s so strange in this place. Corrupted light has covered the entire world, so there’s no night. Ever. And the light made monsters. Really nasty ones called sin eaters. Urianger explained it better than I can. Probably. He definitely used a whole lot of fancy words. Y’shtola could probably explain it even better, but I haven’t found her yet.
The Crystal Tower is in this world. Maybe it’s in every world. Here, it’s run by a guy called the Crystal Exarch. He acts all mysterious, but also seems weirdly familiar for some reason, like I recognize his voice from somewhere. I can’t put my finger on it. The tower has a nice little town around it called the Crystarium. It reminds me of Revenant’s Toll in a lot of ways.
I’ve also found a place I hate even more than Ul’dah. It’s called Eulmore, and the nobles there are all cartoonishly horrible, except this one named Dulia-Chai. She’s nice. And a bit stupid. Their ruler, lord Vauthry, is the single most swollen, corpulent man in the history of any world. Seriously, I bet if I stab him with my sword, pure lard will leak out instead of blood. He’s also a tyrant who throws servants off cliffs when they displease him. I wanted to kill him right there, but Alphinaud was worried it might start a war.
I don’t know how soon I’ll be back. I’ve been running around Norvrandt killing the strongest sin eaters so the night can come back. They’re calling me the Warrior of Darkness, and I’m sure that’s as weird to you as it is for me.
Don’t mind Feo Ul. I made some kind of magic pact with her when I agreed to help save this world. I’m not sure what all the rules are, but I’ve been assured that I did not unwittingly marry her.
I hope to be back soon. I have no idea how much time I'm losing in this world, but it feels like too damn much without you.
I love you.
Gabriel
P.S. Enclosed is a document of paramount importance. You must see it delivered to Tataru as soon as possible. The contents will enrich life on our world for all people living on it and all future generations. Do not let it fall into enemy hands.’
Yugiri: Smiles and kisses the letter “My beloved is as well as can be expected, then.” Bows to Feo Ul. “Thank you. It has only been a couple of days on this world since he left, but it is good to hear from him even so.”
Feo Ul: “Proper respect and manners? My my, my sapling could learn from you, lovely flower.”
Yugiri: “His talent for making friends has ever served him well.” Examines the other document enclosed with the letter. “…a recipe?”
Feo Ul: Shrugs “He said it was very important that you get it. I need to get home before he gets into more trouble- oh who am I kidding, he’s probably gotten in trouble twenty times by now!” Poofs back to the First.
Yugiri: “Almost certainly.” Still reading the recipe. “Pizza… odd name for a food…”

The fact that pizza exists on the First but not on the Source is proof like no other that Emet-Selch is right and the rejoining must go forward. Where do I sign up to join the Ascians?
Chapter Text
On the banks of the One River, outside the Doman Enclave, shortly after Elidibus's death
Yozan: "Mr. Gabriel? I have an adventuring question for you!"
Gabriel: Casually skipping stones along the river. "Shoot."
Yozan: "Adventurers need to know how to fight, right? It's a really important skill for them."
Gabriel: "That's right, unless you're rich enough to hire someone to fight for you."
Yozan: "Can you teach me to fight like you do? When I'm old enough, I mean."
Gabriel: "Spearwork? Sure, I can do that."
Yozan: "No, Rokka says she's going to do that. I want to fight with a giant sword and dark magic like you."
Gabriel: Pauses mid-throw. "I... I don't think that's a good idea."
Yozan: Makes pleading eyes. "Why not?"
Gabriel: "These powers can be really dangerous, Yozan. A lot of innocent people almost got really hurt because of them when I was starting out."
Yozan: "But then you got really good with them, and saved the world with them! And you can help me, and make sure I don't hurt anyone by accident!"
Gabriel: "You're very confident in my teaching skills."
Yozan: "It's just... I watched you fight those four thieves in Mor Dhona. And it was really amazing... and also really scary. You kept us safe that way. Every adventuring team needs someone like that, right?"
Gabriel: "You're right but... there are other ways to do that..."
Yozan: "But I'd have to travel far away to learn most of them. Are you sure you can't just teach me the safe parts?"
Gabriel: "No. When you embrace your inner darkness, you do it completely. And it will change you. But... hold on..." Gabriel looks distracted all of a sudden, and seems to be muttering to himself. "Are you sure? It might make things weird... Okay, if you think it's a good idea..."
Yozan: "Umm... are you okay, Mr. Gabriel?"
'Gabriel': With a subtly different voice. "Umm, yes, I'm fine. Listen, instead of a greatsword, how would you like to learn to use an axe?"
Yozan: "You can do that? I've never seen you use one."
'Gabriel': "I haven't used it much in a while, but I can teach you."
Yozan: "Okay! That'll work!" Ponders for a moment. "...will I still get to wear spiky black armor to scare my enemies?"
'Gabriel': "As spiky and scary as you like."
Yozan: "Yay! I'll go tell the others!" Runs off.
Gabriel: "...you know, I think that's the most proactive you've been since you started living in my head."
Ardbert: "There wasn't much I could do from up here. I spent the whole battle against Elidibus just... watching helplessly as he used my face. You had to clean up my mess again. It'll be nice to actually do something for a change."
Gabriel: "Never thought you'd have anything to look forward to again?"
Ardbert: "I don't exactly have much of a life of my own anymore. I feel like a hanger-on, just along for the ride at this point."
Gabriel: "...tell you what. How would you like control for a week?"
Ardbert: "Really?"
Gabriel: "Really. Dress up incognito, and you can just take us exploring wherever you fancy."
Ardbert: "Well... I never got to see Ala Mhigo..."

Chapter Text
The Doman Enclave, at the height of the Bozja Rebellion
Hien: Listening to Yugiri’s report from Dalmasca. “If I may, my friend, you seem a touch distracted today.”
Yugiri: “I apologize, sire. It is an entirely personal matter.”
Hien: “…is it about Gabriel?”
Yugiri: “I really should focus on my work, my lord.”
Hien: “I know you are worried. Go ahead and vent.”
Yugiri: “…he returns from what, from what I can glean, is his most deadly adventure yet. One on another world. One that came closer than any other to killing him. And now he throws himself into another battle.” Lays down the report she was holding. “I know why he must, but…”
Hien: “It is entirely natural to be worried, Yugiri, but it’s Gabriel. He’ll be fine.”
Yugiri: “I know, but…” Throws up her hands. “It frustrates me. Ascians, Primals, the Empire- the world seems to want him to have no rest.”
Hien: “An injustice, to be sure.” Puts a hand on her shoulder. “And yet another reason why we must win these conflicts as quickly as possible. The quicker it ends, the sooner he might lay down his burden.” Smiles at the resolve growing within Yugiri’s eyes. “And look on the bright side, old friend! He’s home more than ever, now! Gangos is near, and Master Garlond has been very diligent about making him go on regular furloughs.”
Yugiri: “I know, and I am more grateful for that than I can ever express.” Sighs. “I suppose I should have known that this would happen when I fell in love with the Warrior of Light.”
Hien: “But, by the same token, you may be at some ease. He is the Warrior of Light! The Champion of his homeland and ours! The Eikon Slayer! It took Zenos, a one-man army in his own right, to threaten him before! The Paragons have all fallen to that absurdly large blade of his! And his time on the First seems to have made him stronger than ever! A little war front should be no threat to him, right?”
Yugiri: Stares at him with one twitching eye. “My lord, why did you have to say that out loud?”
Meanwhile, on the Bozjan Southern Front
Gabriel: Scrambles out of the crater, dodging a swarm of meteors, waving Shadowbringer at the fleeing Resistance fighters. “RUN THE FUCK AWAY!”
Lyon Rem Helsos: Scrambles out of the other side of the crater, covering his legionnaires with Lionsmane. “FALL BACK!” Catches Gabriel’s eye. “EORZEAN! TRUCE?”
Gabriel: Blocks another meteor with a dark magic barrier. “TRUCE!”
Red Comet: “SCREEEEEE!” Flaps its wings and summons more meteors, laying the landscape to waste as soldiers from both sides flee for their lives.
Notes:
Wrote this up while waiting in Endwalker queues. This fic may expand from mere shipping drabbles to include Gabriel's shenanigans going forward.

The Doman Enclave
Yugiri: “You wished to speak with me, my Lord?”
Hien: “Yes, Yugiri. I’ve some small concern about your fiancée.”
Yugiri: “Gabriel? Is he well?”
Hien: “I was hoping you could tell me that. Has he been ill at all, recently?”
Yugiri: “As far as I am aware, no. He and the other Scions arrived in Sharlayan yesterday, I believe.”
Hien: “Curious…”
Yugiri: “Wait, has something happened?”
Hien: “Most likely… I should start at the beginning. He was seen warping in via the Aetheryte yesterday, making for the Kienkan.”
Yugiri: “Without even speaking to either of us?”
Hien: “The servant who saw him said he was grumbling to himself, and not really speaking to anyone. He then proceeded to abscond with the Kienkan’s entire supply of lavatory paper and teleport away- back to Sharlayan, presumably.”
Yugiri: “Then he is in all likelihood well and planning some absurdity.”
Hien: “Ah! That is good to hear!”
Meanwhile, in Sharlayan
Fourchenault Leveilleur: Staring in slack-jawed horror at his mansion, covered entirely in lavatory paper
Ameliance Leveilleur: Making a valiant but futile effort not to laugh her head off at the same sight
Leveilleur Butler: “My lord, my lady… we’ve scoured the mansion, but have found no sign of who the culprit might be.”
Ameliance: “Oh, it is no matter. Likely some students having a jape, and nothing more.”
Fourchenault: “How… where did they even get this much…?”
Butler: “If I may… there was one thing we found, hung from the back door.” Holds up a strip of lavatory paper with words written on it in messy handwriting none of them recognize: GET BETTER LAVATORY PAPER.
Notes:
Naturally, this was before Gabriel met Ameliance and found out she was actually really nice.

Chapter Text
In a strange place that vaguely resembles the top of the Tower of Babil
Gabriel: “No… no, no, no…”
Before him stands Zenos yae Galvus, pulling his scythe out of Alphinaud’s lifeless body. Alisaie lies motionless a few feet away.
Zenos: smirks. “Do I have your attention yet, hero?”
Gabriel: Wordlessly screams as he swings Shadowbringer in Zenos’s direction. A massive flood of dark magic, larger than any he’d ever made before, cascades towards Zenos. Zenos grins as it approaches him.
Gabriel wakens from the nightmare with a yelp before this can continue, still in his bed at Camp Broken Glass.
Alisaie: From outside “Gabriel? Are you alright?”
Gabriel: Pulling on his heavy coat. “I’m fine, I’m fine… come in…”
Alisaie: Walks into the room with Alphinaud. “You didn’t sound fine just now.”
Gabriel: “Just a bad dream, nothing serious…” Looks between the two of them. “Alphinaud? Alisaie?”
Alphinaud: “What is it?”
Gabriel: “You know I care about you both a lot. You’re basically little siblings to me.” Clasps each one by the shoulder. “Please, for the love of the Fury, don’t get near Zenos in the battle.”
Alisaie: “Can’t say I’m not glad to have a brother I can actually stand, but I’m not running from the prince or anyone else. You know this.”
Gabriel: “Just… for my peace of mind, be careful. Okay?”
Alphinaud: “Only if you promise to do the same.”
Later, in the 1st legion headquarters at Tertium
Gabriel: Looking at the shock collars around Alphinaud and Alisaie’s necks “So that’s it, then? Taking them hostage and sending me off?”
Jullus: Swallows “I have my orders.”
Gabriel: Mutters under his breath “Imperials…” Fixes each soldier with a glare. “I will be back. And when I am, I’ll be looking over both of those twins for the slightest scratch, the slightest sign of harm. And I had better not find any. Because, if I do, nobody will ever find your remains.” Without another word, he spins on one foot and strides out of the Terminus, Jullus having to run to catch up with him. The Garlean soldiers are now looking at each other with unease.
Alisaie: “Well? Haven’t you a cell to show us to?”
Notes:
As I was halfway through the Garlemald section, I came across a fake spoiler that Alphinaud gets murdered by Zenos. I didn't know if it was true or not at the time (and have since finished Endwalker), but the twins getting taken hostage about 20 minutes later did not help my stress levels!
Chapter 23
Summary:
Minor Ardbert/Lamitt shipping here, in the tragic never-came-to-pass sort of way. Ardbert, Esteem, and the WoL being a comedic trio is an idea that I'm beginning to see the potential in.
Chapter Text
Onokoro, at the height of the Final Days, shortly after Gabriel and Yugiri visit Sui-no-sato
Ardbert: “Underwater village… have to say, that’s a new one, unless you count the nonsense the Fae kept getting up to.”
Gabriel: Doesn’t respond, watching Yugiri walk ahead of him
Ardbert: “Ah… forgive me. That couldn’t have been easy for her.”
Esteem: Materializes “We could go back and make the people of the village let her back in properly.”
Gabriel: “No attacking the village elders, Fray.”
Esteem: “You’re no fun.” Dematerializes
Ardbert: Glances at Yugiri. “I will say, I’d wondered at the kind of person who stolen your heart. She’s… something, to be sure.”
Gabriel: Cracks a smile. “More than something.”
Ardbert: “I don’t remember her being there for our first encounters. I guess, if she had been there, we never would have seen her until it was too late.”
Gabriel: “She’s a master of what she does. I tried to learn her arts myself once. Didn’t go well. I think I make too much noise to be a good ninja.”
Ardbert: “Still… I’m a little impressed you found the time. Always on the move like I was, I don’t think I ever really had the opportunity for that kind of relationship.”
Gabriel: “No? What about Lamitt?”
Ardbert: A look of confusion crosses his face “Lamitt? What- what do you mean?”
Gabriel: “It was very obvious she had feelings for you. Did nothing ever come of that?”
Ardbert: Staring at Gabriel in shock
Gabriel: “Ah. I see. I, too, am an idiot and had to have it spelled out.”
Ardbert: Is now bashing his head against a tree, a rather impressive feat for a non-physical being made of someone else’s thoughts.
Yugiri: Slows down when she notices Gabriel falling behind. “Gabriel… who are you talking to?”
Gabriel: “The voices in my head. As usual.”
Yugiri: “I am still uncertain how to feel about you adding yet another spare personality to your soul. I know you say this Ardbert is not as violent as Fray, but… surely there must be such a thing as too many?”
Gabriel: “Well, I haven’t noticed any changes to my personality or anything.”
Yugiri: “Nor I. If anything, you are… more you since returning from the First.” Smiles “More brave, more eager to help those in need…” Frowns “And more incautious. Even by your standards, you are running yourself ragged, teleporting around the world and taking it upon yourself to fight off despair itself.”
Gabriel: “I can’t do otherwise. Not after…”
Yugiri: “Not after what?”
Gabriel: “It’s nothing. But stopping these blasphemies is something I have to do.”
Yugiri: “Perhaps. But right now, what you have to do is rest.”

Chapter Text
A place that vaguely resembles Thavnair during the Final Days
The sky blazes red above Radz-At-Han as blasphemies overrun another village. Gabriel is darting from place to place, killing the monsters as quickly as they can appear. But it is to no avail. For every blasphemy he cuts down, two more show up to take its place. Above it all, in the gaping black void in the sky where the sun used to be, is an outline of the primal Zodiark, cackling maniacally in Fandaniel’s voice.
Zodiark: “Oh, well struck, hero! A few more of those, and maybe you’ll save one or two.”
Gabriel: Doesn’t respond.
Zodiark: “You owe them that much, don’t you? After all… it’s all your fault.”
Gabriel: “Shut it.”
Zodiark: Singsong “You unleashed this all when you killed me. Poor, slow, stupid Gabriel just stood there and let Fandaniel kill me. And now you’ve killed the world!”
Gabriel: Wavering “Go to hell.”
Zodiark: “I’m already there. Everyone will be joining me soon, and it’s all thanks to you!”
Esteem: “Alright… I think I’m going to step in right about now.”
Gabriel: “Wha-?”
Esteem: Points at Zodiark. “You. Piss off.” Turns to Gabriel. “And you. WAKE UP.” Slaps Gabriel.
Gabriel wakes up next to Yugiri in their quarters at the Kienkan. Disoriented, he instinctively scrambles to wrap his arms around his lover, who wakes with a start.
Yugiri: “Gabriel? It is barely dawn, what is…” Sees the tears streaming down Gabriel’s face. “Gabriel? Gabriel, I am here. It is alright.”
Gabriel: “You being here is the only thing alright right now.”
Esteem: Suddenly standing at the foot of the bed “It’s not your fault at all, Gabriel.”
Yugiri: “YOU!” Draws a dagger out from under her pillow. “What are you doing here?”
Esteem: “Trying to make this idiot see sense. He’s under the impression this mess is all his own fault since he killed Zodiark.”
Yugiri: Lowers her dagger and runs a hand through Gabriel’s hair. “Oh, Gabriel…”
Gabriel: “It is my fault.”
Esteem: “No. You stop that. That’s Myste talking, and you know it.”
Yugiri: “Is it not as Thancred said, Gabriel? Fandaniel would have killed Zodiark anyway, after causing much more damage.”
Gabriel: “I could have stopped him from possessing Zodiark to begin with!”
Esteem: “No you couldn’t have.”
Gabriel: “You don’t know that!”
Esteem: “Yes I do. I didn’t spend all that time teaching you to value yourself just to see all my good work crumble like this. And you made me dress up in that ridiculous dancer’s outfit to fight Izanami, so you are going to listen to what I have to say now.”
Gabriel: “I don’t need more platitudes, least of all from you.”
Esteem: “I live in your head, idiot. I was there on the moon, too. So maybe you could have tackled Fandaniel to the ground or something. Then, Zenos would have jumped in, and you would have had the exact same situation. And don’t even try to imply that you could have held them both off. Zenos alone is an even match for you.”
Gabriel: “I…” Can’t find an argument and slumps, defeated, in Yugiri’s arms. “I know. I know, that’s the logical way to look at it. But…”
Esteem: “No buts. You can’t save everyone, no matter how powerful you might be. And don’t you ever take the blame for this kind of disaster when there are actual villains out there who need punishing for it. You want justice for what happened? Find Zenos and end him.”
Gabriel: Slowly nods. “Properly, this time.”
Esteem: “I taught you to cast down the high and mighty. I can’t think of anyone higher or mightier than him.”
Yugiri: “After you save the world, my love. Zenos is not the priority here.”
Esteem: “…fine, after. But he needs punishing, and you’re the only one who can give it.” Cracks his knuckles. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to have a word with Myste for making you think negative things again.” Dissolves into aether.
Gabriel: “…well, if there’s going to be a fight in my head, then I’m not getting back to sleep tonight.”
Yugiri: “Then just hold me.” Hugs him tighter. “Hold me, and remember the lives you have saved.”
Gabriel: Hugs her back “…I’m sorry for making you worry.”
Yugiri: “I will never not worry about you. I committed to that the day I put this ring on my finger.”
Gabriel: Sighs. “Shame there was no way to tell your parents about that during our reconnaissance. They really should be at the wedding.”
Yugiri: “If I were able to send messages, I would. The terms of my banishment forbid even that.”
Gabriel: “I mean… the Ruby Princess seems to like me since I de-monstered her palace and saved her life. Maybe I could pull some strings with her? And if she says no, well… nothing stops me from sending a letter.”
Yugiri: “You do not need to do that… but it would be the best wedding present ever.”
Notes:
This takes place the night after the Ranged DPS Role Quest is complete. Everyone in Endwalker needs a hug. Especially the Warrior of Light.

Old Sharlayan, at the Last Stand
Y’shtola: Grins. “And in return, I would take you to see Ryne. I’m sure you would appreciate the fine young woman she has become.”
Thancred: “Oh, spare me.” Waves off Y'shtola as she giggles.
Urianger: To Gabriel. “And what of thee? What wouldst thou pursue at duty’s end?” Looks at him and sees Gabriel munching on grapes while intently examining a wine cork. “Er… Gabriel?”
Gabriel: Wordlessly holds up the wine cork and looks at it with one eye closed.
Thancred: “I believe that vintage is from Wineport, if you were wondering”
Gabriel: “Hmm…? Oh, got a bit distracted, sorry.”
Thancred: “So you intend to take up winemaking when this whole mess is done?”
Gabriel: “No, no… what I’m thinking of is a bit more…” Glances at the cork again. “Y’shtola, Urianger, you’re both smart, right?”
Urianger: “Alas, I’d never presume such self-importance, but mine Archon’s mark wouldst seem to express-”
Y’shtola: “Yes. We are.”
Thancred: “What am I, chopped liver?”
Gabriel: “Right.” Holds up the Stone of Azem. “Ever since going back in time- still can’t believe I’m saying that- I’ve been getting vague… images that I think are ancient memories. Those aren’t important, but-”
Y’shtola: “Those could be extremely important! Should we not further explore-?”
Gabriel: “Well, maybe later, but what I saw in one of them is what’s important right now.” Holds up the cork again. “How big do corks get?”
Y’shtola: “Well… I believe you’ve seen cork bulbs in your travels at one point, yes?”
Gabriel: “I have.”
Y’shtola: “No bigger than that.”
Gabriel: “Well, that’s not big enough. Guess he must have used creation magic to make it.” Looks thoughtful. “Which the Loporrits have access to… I wonder if they’d help…?”
Urianger: “Pray, what size cork wouldst thou require?”
Gabriel: Thinks about it for a moment. “How big is the mouth of a volcano, again?”
Y’shtola: “Gabriel, no.”
Gabriel: “Okay, just hear me out.”
Thancred: “I think these ancient memories must have been planted by the Ascians to trick you into trying to kill yourself.”
Gabriel: “I mean, there’s one way to find out!”
Y’shtola: Facepalms. “Okay. So let us humour this. Let us suppose that, in some past life, you somehow stoppered an active volcano. Why? Why would you ever do something as insane as that?”
Gabriel: Gestures at the fruit platter. “For grapes!”
Notes:
Azem was straight-up a Looney-Toons character. Prove me wrong.

Chapter Text
Kugane, at the Ruby Bazaar, two weeks after the flight of the Ragnarok
Tataru: Merrily drunk “More sake!”
Alisaie: “Tataru, you’ve had enough.”
Tataru: Stands unsteadily on top of the table, and points dramatically. “More, I say! I shall not lose to Hancock!”
Hancock: Equally drunk. “I shall match you all night, Mistress Tataru, I promise you!”
Alisaie: “We didn’t just save the universe just for one of our loved ones to die of liquor poisoning!”
Livingway: “Poison!?”
Alisaie: “Wait, hold on, it’s not-”
Livingway: “Do not worry, Tataru! I shall save you!” Pulls out a large white carrot and sprints at Tataru, drawing upraised eyebrows from multiple partygoers in the background. “You don’t need to end it here! You have so much to live for!”
Tataru: “Huh? I'm perfectly fine." Sways. "It's only poison in very large amounts!"
Alisaie: "Which you've had!"
Livingway: "What... why would you drink poison on purpose?!"
Tataru: "Oh, my dear, if I was near being poisoned, I think I would have started noticing the effects by now!”
Alisaie: “The effects are plain for all to see!”
Tataru: “Oh, you’re exaggerating!”
Alisaie: “Well, what’s that, then?” Points at the multiple fine paintings with moustaches newly drawn on them.
Tataru: “…oh, you’re just jealous you’re too young to join in.”
Alisaie: Sputters “What… I… Alphinaud, back me up here!”
Alphinaud: Distracted, with a mild smirk on his face “Hmmm…? Oh, sure, sure.”
Alisaie: “Pay attention! What are you even…?” Looks at where he’s looking, at Lords Hien and Lolorito, wrapped in conversation.
Lolorito: “I beg you to reconsider, o gracious Lord Hien! Doma’s paper industry was nothing short of legendary before Garlemald’s… er, unfortunate actions brought it to an end. Now, with it on the rise again, the East Aldenald Company is better equipped and situated than anyone else to distribute it among the Eorzean Alliance. And I assure you, the premiums I am willing to offer would bolster the wealth of your nation threefold!”
Hien: “That is quite a claim. But what I am struggling to understand is why you feel exclusive trading rights would improve this. Independent traders of Limsa Lominsa were ready to start buying almost immediately, and I would say that has been quite lucrative for my people. Would you have me cut them off?”
Lolorito: “No, I suppose not. So long as you are comfortable entrusting your people’s wares to pirates.”
Hien: “Some of my closest allies are pirates. And it is interesting that you should speak of trust, Lord Lolorito. My emissary has had some interesting things to say about you.”
Lolorito: Sweats. “I- I admit that my first encounter with Lady Yugiri may not have left the best of first impressions, but if you examine my company’s history…”
Alphinaud: To Alisaie. “Forgive me. I was basking in the… what was that charming Ilsaberdan term again? Schadenfreude?”
Alisaie: “I am glad you are so thrilled by business negotiations.” Raises her voice. “At what is supposed to be a party!”
Hien: “Indeed!” Walks over to the buffet. “Where are the lemon cakes? Gabriel mentioned there would be some.”
Hancock: Slurring “There should be a platter of them right at the center.”
Hien: “You mean, where this big bare spot on the table is?”
Hancock: “What!?” Panicking. “That dish was specifically requested by Lord Sevatar! I triple-checked the list! How could this happen!?” On his knees, arms raised toward the sky in despair.
Alphinaud: “Speaking of which, where is Gabriel?”
Alisaie: “If I was feeling bitter, I would say that he went swimming out into the bay to find a sea serpent to fight.”
Cookingway: “Don’t worry! My custom lemon-based carrots shall be the perfect substitute!”
Lolorito: “Where did all these rodents come from?!”
Alphinaud: “You cannot still be angry with him over Zenos.”
Alisaie: “I most certainly can!”
Tataru: Busy defacing another priceless painting after winning the latest round. “Oh, he’s not in the bay.”
Alphinaud: “You know where he is?”
Tataru: “He and Yugiri snuck off onto the roof!” Stage whispers. “But it’s a big secret, so don’t tell anyone.”
Meanwhile, on the roof.
Yugiri: “How did you make that jump without spilling any?”
Gabriel: Balancing a large platter of lemon cakes on his lap. “Very carefully.”
Yugiri: “You've not aggravated your wounds any, have you?”
Gabriel: Massaging the bandages wrapped around his side. “Look, that’s not important. What’s important is, I have my lemoncakes in one hand, a sake in the other, the love of my life sitting next to me, and no world-ending calamity breathing down all our necks.”
Yugiri: Snatches the sake out of his hands. “No alcohol. You heard the chirurgeon.”
Gabriel: “My wounds are basically closed!”
Yugiri: “If I let you have any, we both know you will get drunk enough to fall off the roof.”
Gabriel: “I change my mind, this is the worst day ever and I’d rather be fighting Zenos again.”
Yugiri: “Oh, do not even joke about that. I will slap you hard enough to return you to the infirmary.”
Gabriel: “I thought you were trying to avoid that.”
Yugiri: Wraps an arm around him and leans into him “You hush.”
Notes:
The Scions of the Seventh Dawn, ranked in order of alcohol tolerance from highest to lowest: Tataru, Moenbryda, Thancred, Lyse, Y'shtola, Estinien, G'raha, Minfilia, Papalymo, Urianger, Gabriel. Ryne and the twins are underage, so they don't get rankings.
