A Family of Choice

Chapter 10

Summary:

Izuku is now an Aizawa, but no one else knows that, other than Hizashi, Nemuri, and Principal Nezu, of course. How will the other students find out? Oh, he's just going to tell them? Can he do it?

Notes:

It's DONE! I finally finished this, I'm so excited! I mean, I loved writing this fic, probably more than most others I've written, but when a fic gets too long, it can start to be boring or repetitive, which I really hope didn't happen with this! And, I have a lot of other fanfic ideas, most for MHA, but some for other fandoms, that I was waiting to start writing on until this one was done!

Anyway, this is just the epilogue, so of course it's a lot shorter than the other chapters. I'm really happy with how this turned out, though. Especially considering that I have had the idea of this epilogue planned out since I first started the fic. And so, without further ado, Enjoy the last chapter!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Izuku stood before 1A's classroom door, hesitating. Did he want to go in, and make his announcement? Well, he did, just...maybe not yet? He took one step back, but was stopped from completely running away by his dad's hand on his back. No, it was Mr. Aizawa, at school.

It was weird how strange that was, now, as if he had been calling him "Dad" for more than just a week. Well, he supposed he had kind of been calling him that in his mind for longer, but...still.

Izuku had been staying with Aizawa for about a week now, but he went back to the dorms the night before, when all the rest of the students were also getting back, so that people wouldn't know he had been at the school the whole time.

The adoption had been approved and finalized two days ago, so, on the last day before the rest of the students were getting back. Uncle Hizashi and Auntie Nemuri had come over for supper, and they had all celebrated.

It was weird, for Izuku. He wasn't used to having any family, and now he had a dad, an aunt, and an uncle. Well, honorary aunt and uncle, but still. They were kind to him, they supported him, didn't pressure him, and they were fun. And he could tell that they cared, about both him and his dad.

He smiled just thinking about it, and his chest filled with a warmth at the thought of all future visits, and the memories and moments they could have. It was a nice thought.

Shouta's hand on his back, which was a warm and encouraging strength, put more pressure against him, gently urging him forwards.

Izuku glanced back at his dad, shooting him a nervous smile. Then he gripped his backpack straps tighter, grabbed the handle of the giant door, and slid it open.

"Deku! Good morning!" Uraraka exclaimed, bounding towards him with her boundless energy. "I didn't see you this morning for breakfast, where were you?" Her head tilted, as she stared at him earnestly. It made him blush, and start to stutter.

"Uhm, well, I was just...I w-was training, and I wasn't v-very hungry, and I was j-just running a bit l-late, but...I'm sorry for not joining you a for breakfast!" He bowed low as he stammered out his last apologies.

Uraraka rushed to assure him that it was alright, that she was just curious, and Iida joined them, his arms doing their usual chopping motions as he expounded on the merits of being on time, and even early.

Izuku started chatting with his friends, walking to his seat, a large smile on his face. Shouta walked over to the teacher's podium a moment later, and deposited his sleeping bag behind it.

He glanced at the clock on the wall, hands in his pocket, then stepped up to the podium. "Alright, Class, settle down." Immediately after he said that, the whole class was either in their seats, or just sliding into them. He hid a small smile in his capture weapon. They were good kids.

"Alright, before we start homeroom, Midoriya has an announcement." He kept his face straight, as he stepped back from the podium, not betraying the excitement, nervousness, and happiness he felt.

Izuku stood up hesitantly from his seat, his chair scraping against the classroom floor. It wasn't the only sound in the room, however, as most of the students could be heard muttering, to themselves or others, about what their classmate could have to say.

When he made it to the front of the classroom, Izuku sent a grimace Shouta's way, before turning around to face the class. Shouta hid a smile in his capture weapon, then Izuku started to speak.

"Uhm, so... it's not really that big of a deal. Well, I mean, it kind of is. I guess it depends on how you look at it?" He started rambling, looking off to the distance above his classmates' heads, while his hand came up to scratch at the back of his neck. His fingers dug into the fringe of his hair, and tugged. Shouta frowned. He didn't like seeing his kid hurting himself, no matter how minor.

"But, uhm, the thing is," Izuku continued, "I've been lying to you since we met." At the class's shocked stares, he quickly backtracked, a worried look on his face as he waved both hands frantically in front of his face. "Wait! No, not lying. Well, technically, but it was more like hiding the truth? See, the thing is, I've been talking about my mom, and how amazing she is, and how I would go home and see her, and, well...the truth is, she died when I was eleven."

The class all stiffened at this, and Bakugou's face went slack, his jaw hanging open. Uraraka brought a hand up to cover her mouth, stifling a gasp, with a concerned look in her eyes.

"I... I've been living in an orphanage ever since. Well, other than the times I was in foster homes, but those never worked out. So, yah...but I was fine! I mean, I worked it all out, and I...I'm fine! Especially now, because I got adopted just last week. Well, technically the paperwork only went through a couple days ago, but...yah. so, I would like to reintroduce myself to the class." Pausing, he took a deep breath, and bowed down low towards the whole class, arms stiff at his sides. "Hi, my name is Midoriya-Aizawa Izuku! You can still just call me Midoriya though."

He glanced up, just as the whole class erupted. "WHAT?!"

Most of the students were out of their seats at this point, rushing towards Midoriya. A few lagged behind, some glancing at SHouta with surprised expressions on their faces, and even a few knowing looks, surprisingly. And a few rushed forward faster than all the rest. Midoriya's closest friends were, of course, up beside him right away, giving him hugs, reassurances, shaky smiles, as he smiled back and gave his own assurances.

Shouta stepped out of the way, watching with a soft, unhidden smile as his son interacted with his friends. His smile dropped from his face, however, when he heard one student's muttering.

"So, Midoriya has an in with Mr. Aizawa. No wonder he always gets good scores in class. I always knew he couldn't be that perfect." Shouta snapped his gaze over to see who said that, but in truth, he didn't need to see them to know who it was. The voice, with its strong lisp attached, was enough: Minoru Mineta.

Well, Shouta had been thinking he could expel someone. Mineta was always a good candidate, and it was about time. Maybe now he could even make a case against him, despite his influential parents. It would make most of the rest of the class, and the whole school, for that matter, happier. Especially the girls.

Casting aside those thoughts for now, but keeping them in the back of his mind, Shouta turned his attention back to the group of students all gathered around Izuku at the front of the classroom. They would need to actually do some class-work eventually, but he would let them have their time. Just a few more minutes, maybe. After all, they all deserved it, especially Izuku.

Although, in Shouta's mind, Izuku deserved everything. They may not have started off as family, and they may not be related by blood. Neither were Hizashi or Nemuri to them, for that matter. But that was okay. After all, they were a family of choice, and sometimes, that bond was even stronger than between family you're born with.

Notes:

And it's beautiful! I have no idea why I just put that there, I just sang it out loud as i typed it too, lol. I don't even know if what I sang is actually from a song. It's okay, I can be happy with how my fic turned out. Right? Right? Anyway, the part with Mineta was put in there because of a review by EverythingYouWishYouWeren't, over on Fanfiction.Net, who said, and I quote: "expel Mineta. Do it." So, thank you for that, it made me laugh, and gave me something else to put in my epilogue.

This story may be done, but it doesn't mean the universe itself is. I can never get enough of the adopted Midoriya trope, so I may just come back later and make this a series, and add more works to it. I already have a few rough ideas in my head. Of course, I can't promise that they will get done, or when, but...they might happen.

I really hope you enjoyed this story! Let me know if you did! Or if you didn't, constructive criticism is always welcome. :) Thank you so much for reading, and have a good day/night!
