Work Text:
Simon’s creative writing class let out about an hour later than it normally did. Which meant that his creative writing class let out on time. Being a three hour class, the professor normally let them go an hour earlier than they were scheduled. They were supposed to spend that hour working on their assignment for the week but Simon usually spent it going on a leisurely walk and then cuddling with his boyfriend, even if his best intentions were to get some studying done.
Being a vampire, Raphael slept almost all day. Which meant that when Simon arrived home around noon, his boyfriend was normally fast asleep already. Simon would usually slip into bed with him and let the morning tension ease away before he’d remind himself that he was very much alive and still had a full evening's worth of homework and studying to get through.
Today was very different. Instead of getting home around noon, Simon walked through the door into their dimly lit apartment (the necessary black curtains doing their job of blocking out all the bright sunlight) around one. Normally, when Simon walked inside he was greeted with nothing but today, Simon pushed the door open, grabbed his keys and then looked up to find his boyfriend standing in the threshold of the hallway, looking particularly upset.
His dark hair was slightly rumpled. He was wearing Simon’s black sweater, a pair of sweatpants and… shoes? It was obvious that Raphael had been awoken from his sleep not too long ago and if his face was anything to go by, he wasn’t thrilled about that fact.
Simon’s face scrunched up as he laughed softly and closed the door behind him, shutting away the bright beam of sunlight that kept his boyfriend away. “Why are you dressed?” He asked curiously.
“I was going to come find you,” Raphael snapped. “You’re late. I was worried. You’re never out at one and you didn’t text.”
Simon dropped his bag, turning and jumping only slightly as he suddenly found that Raphael had appeared silently before him. “Sorry, my class got out late and my phone died this morning.” Simon eyed the purple shoes with a chuckle. “You were going to come find me? How exactly was that going to work?”
Raphael glared. “I was going to use an umbrella,” he announced as he inched forward.
“You were going to walk all the way to my college under an umbrella and then, you were going to look for me without letting a single beam of light hit you?” Simon questioned. He expected his normally very rational boyfriend to see how absurd his entire plan was but Raphael only nodded seriously.
“What else was I to do? Anything could have happened to you.”
Simon noticed that Raphael had moved even closer but he thought nothing of it, even if Raphael was suddenly looming in his space. It would have been too close for comfort if Simon wasn’t comfortable with Raphael regardless of how threateningly he wanted to lurk over him.
At his boyfriend's words, Simon rolled his eyes. Raphael knew his class technically got out around one and he also knew Simon forgot his phone charger most days. He didn’t think getting out an hour late was enough cause to risk perishing in the sun.
“Well, rest assured nothing horrendous happened to me. Now, you’re welcome to go back to sleep because I actually have a lot of-” Simon’s words broke off as Raphael moved. Between one blink and the next, Raphael was suddenly wrapping his arms around Simon’s neck and hiking himself up into Simon’s arms.
Raphael’s legs wrapped around Simon’s waist. Wordlessly, he buried his face in Simon’s neck.
Simon’s hands came up automatically to grab Raphael and stop them both from falling over. He stood in stunned silence for a long moment before he was finishing his earlier sentence. “Hey, I have homework to do.”
Raphael only grumbled in response.
“I mean it, I have a lot to do today.” Simon continued.
Raphael tightened his grip around Simon’s neck. When he finally spoke, his voice came out in a high pitched whine. “You’ve been gone all day.”
Sighing, Simon took a few steps forward until he could fall back onto the couch with Raphael still held firmly in his arms. He did have homework to do but how could he say that when his big tough boyfriend had such a good counter argument?
“A half an hour,” Simon warned. “Then you’re going back to bed and I’m going to get my homework done.”
Raphael hummed in acknowledgement but Simon could already tell that wasn’t how this was going to go. In a matter of moments, Raphael was going to fall asleep with his head buried in Simon’s neck. Simon would feel too bad to wake him up and without his phone or a remote in reach, Simon would fall asleep too. Then, he’d wake up in a panic when he realized that hours had gone by and he’d done nothing.
As Raphael’s cold nose nuzzled a little closer to Simon’s neck, he couldn’t help but smile. He remembered how scary Raphael had seemed when they first met. He certainly put on a good act whenever they weren’t alone. There was something charming about the fact that only Simon knew the truth of him. Only Simon got to see him like this and if Simon played his cards right, he might be the only person who ever would.
Becoming a vampire wasn’t exactly something Simon loved the thought of. He loved his life that seemed so utterly incongruous with Raphael’s but he also knew that he loved Raphael more than anything. Simon was sure they’d have a hell of a lot of conversations about it before it would ever happen but eventually, when he graduated and felt satisfied with everything he’d accomplished, he might just give up his life in the sun for an eternity of this: of Raphael in his lap, of napping together on the couch and of knowing that there was no place else he’d rather be.
Raphael was the only thing in the world that would make him consider it but for now, he was fine closing his eyes and knowing that there was no rush. Neither of them were going anywhere, even if Simon’s deadlines were slowly ticking down.
