Chapter Text
May looked out the window, to the seemingly endless acres of countryside rolling past them.
It was just like last time, except now there were two more vehicles following behind them.
"Dewey, Louie, and I have been waiting for this day for years!" Huey clutched the JWG to his chest as Bruni settled on his shoulder. "Tomorrow will officially be the day we go from boys to men!"
May looked and saw Gale flying alongside the limo, their petals brushing up against the glass.
"May?" Daisy asked gently. "Sweetpea, is something wrong?"
"I...well, the last time we came here..."
"Was when we started this whole mess?" Della stated. "Yeah...not a great time."
"But this is going to be different!" Donald countered. "We're going there to participate in a very important tradition for our family. We go every year and we always have a great time. So nothing-"
"NO!" Louie jumped and covered his beak. "Do NOT say that! Saying those specific words invites the wrath of the universe! Are you trying to jinx it!?"
Donald shook his head.
"Good." Louie sat back down. "I just want to have a good time. Is that too much to ask for?"
May and Huey got out their checklists once Launchpad had crashed the limo to signal their arrival.
"I'll get everyone to their assigned sleeping areas while you sort out their luggage."
"Got it!" Huey nodded before running into the house, Twyla on his heels.
"Okay everyone!" May announced as she stood on their porch as Launchpad set up the tent sets beside her. "First things first; thank you all for coming! Second! I will now show you where your tents will be set up! I have looked over the map of the grounds, I have taken into the number of your groups along with the size of the tents and have given you each enough space to set up and move around a little without feeling too crowded. So no last-minute switches! Ok?" A couple of nods and mumbles of agreement. "Good. Now just follow me around back so I can take you to your area. Your belongings will be brought around shortly. In the meantime, please grab one of the tent sets we ordered for you. If you need assistance, feel free to ask. Once we're all set up, we can move on to other activities."
"You and Huey really put in a lot of work into this." Daisy smiled proudly at her daughter.
"We wanted to make sure everyone was comfortable." She squeezed her hands. "I just want to show I'm a useful member of this family."
"May, you are a part of this family." Daisy stroked her hair. "As much as the boys are. You don't need to prove anything."
"Sure." May, answered, not really listening. "Drake, you Gosalyn and Launchpad can set up here. Mom, you can help dad set up inside, I have to finish out here."
"Ok..." Daisy headed for the house. "Just remember: you have nothing to prove!"
Her daughter gave a half-hearted thumbs up before showing Fenton and Gandra their area.
"How again," Gandra snarked as she and Fenton set up their tent. "Was I convinced to come all the way out to the middle of nowhere, with crap wifi surrounded by disease-ridden animals, sleeping on ground belonging to a witch to witness a mysterious and ancient ritual?"
"I would also like to know," Gyro came over as Boyd took charge of their tent. "How I agreed to be part of a horror movie."
Fenton sighed as he set up the poles. "To answer Gandra; Because Huey gave you a wide-eyed pleading and hopeful look that even a computer program would struggle to resist."
"Seriously, how does he make his eyes do that!?"
"To answer Dr. Gearloose: because Louie and Huey asked Boyd and he asked you to go with him because there's no way he's going to make Louie sleep within a hundred feet of his brother...and because Boyd gave you a similar look that Huey did."
"I knew I should have made his eyes smaller..."
"You're both blowing things way out of proportion." Fenton secured the roof. "We all know and trust Elvira, and this isn't some mysterious cult that performs a human sacrifice; this is an annual coming of age ceremony of the People of the Stars, the people who used to settle the land of Duckburg! A legitimate and categorized Native American tribe with no record of performing human sacrifice; in fact, it's explicitly forbidden!"
"I know, I know..." Gandra sighed. "I'm just not really into the whole 'outdoorsy' nature stuff."
"It's just for a few days, and we won't even be camping for most of it! Huey told me there's games, performances, food, it's going to be fun!" He gently held her hand. "And this is important to Huey; he and his brothers and finally old enough to participate, it's a once in a lifetime event for them and it means so much that he asked us to come."
Gandra smiled. "Alright. I'll behave."
"I suppose I can keep my quips to a minimum." Gyro offered. "So Boyd won't feel bad."
"And so McDuck won't fire you if you make the kids upset."
"That too."
"Good enough!"
A curly red hair tween came up to them.
"Hey Fenton, Drake needs a little help with the tent." Gosalyn looked back and winced as she saw her guardian get tangled in the sheets. "A lot of help actually, and Launchpad offered to help with the decorations."
"You got it!" He gave Gandra a quick kiss before walking over to find Drake wrapped in the tent.
"These things must be defective." He grumbled as Fenton and Gosalyn unwrapped him.
"Or maybe you just refused to look at the directions." Gosalyn suggested. " After all, 'You know who' doesn't need directions."
He gave her a flat look.
"Just repeating what you said. And now that Fenton's here, I can go find the guys! See ya!" She ran off.
"Gosalyn!" Drake huffed.
"I'm sure she's just excited." Fenton said as he undid the damage Drake did. "After all, it's not every day we get to witness a part of our nation's history!"
"Honestly, I think she only agreed to come because Launchpad wanted to. And because I insisted. It's good to get out of the city for a while, away from the crime-fighting, and just hang out with her friends."
"You're sounding like a dad already."
"Yeah..." He chuckled nervously. "So when is this thing supposed to start?"
"Tomorrow. Nice and early." He clapped his hands as he finished setting up. "You know...I've been doing some research and this tribe has a very peculiar culture, especially considering the neighboring tribes."
"Such as?"
"They seem to be a mix of Pacific Native practices and ancient Celtic traditions, even long before the Europeans even reached this part of the country! You've got the totems but also braided knots and not to mention the prominence of the pentacle. There are many similarities to the modern Wiccan movement. Most tribes also didn't worship specific Gods most of the time but here they had the spirits and the Lord and Lady-"
"Glad at least someone's excited for this."
"Yeah, Gandra and Sr. Gearloose were talking about this as though we were in a horror movie. What with the witchcraft-"
"-Being out in the woods-"
"-The ancient ceremony-"
Drake snorted. "Now we just need ace wielding murderer and we're all set."
Fenton laughed. "Can you imagine-"
A large shadow fell over the pair, causing them to pause.
They looked at each other, then up to see a very large, very intimidating man with black hair, carrying some bags in one hand, and a very sharp ax in the other.
The man grunted as he glared down at them.
"...Meep." Fenton squeaked
"One of you Drake Mallard?"
Slowly, regretfully, Drake raised his hand.
"Good." He gently tossed the bags at his feet. "Here's your things."
Drake blinked down at his, Gosalyn's, and Launchpad's labeled bags. "Oh, uh, thank you."
"Yer welcome. Name's Abner Duck, I'm Donald and Della's cousin." He turned to leave. "Welcome to the farm." He walked away.
The two men just stared ahead.
"...He seems nice."
Drake nodded slowly. "I'm still keeping my tent locked at night."
"Oh definitely."
"And there!" Matilda said as she finished the tent. "That should keep us comfy."
"Hello there!" Donna walked over, holding her son's hand. "Professor Ludwig Von Drake and Ms. Matilda McDuck, yes?"
"Correct!" Ludwig nodded. "Unless there's another Ludwig Von Drake nearby, which, given the odds...."
"Well isn't this quite the party!" A half-goose, half-duck man wearing a green suit approached them with a duck in a large red hat.
Dugan's eyes lit up. "Unca Fethry!"
"Dugan!" Fethry greeted his nephew with a tight hug. "Look how tall you've gotten! You're going to be as tall as your dad before you know it!"
"And that must make you...Dana?" Gladstone asked.
"Donna. And you must be Gladstone." Donna shook his hand. "It's nice to finally meet you. Fethry's told us so much!"
"Good things, I'm sure. And this strapping young man must be the one and only Dugan Duck!"
"Hi!" Dugan waved at him. "Are you another uncle?"
"Gladdy's mine and your dad's cousin!" Fethry wrapped an arm around his cousin. "So of course he's your uncle!"
"So the ceremony tomorrow." Donna asked. "What's it like? Abner told me all of you did it."
"It's not really a big deal." Gladstone shrugged. "You say a few words, yadda yadda and then it's over."
"Are you kidding!?" Fethry gasped. "It's a huge deal! This is the moment where we go from being kids to being grown-ups! From boys to men!"
"I wanna be a man!" Dugan pouted.
His mother giggled and kissed his head. "You can have your turn in a few years, but in the meantime, you get to be my baby!"
"Could I also ask some questions?" Ludwig pulled out a notebook. "About yer memories of the ceremony?"
"We've been researching the tribe's history." Matilda explained. "We're trying to see if we can uncover anything more about the spirits and the stones."
"That's right...you've got all of them now." Gladstone looked concerned. "So now what?"
"That's what we're trying to figure out."
"I'm hoping this ceremony will uncover some clues." Ludwig nodded. "It's the first one with the spirits in a long time, so who knows what will happen?"
"So..." Goldie lay on the bed of the room she and Scrooge were sharing. "This 'ceremony' is...?"
"An annual coming of age ceremony for the People of the Stars." Scrooge said as he unpacked their clothes. "Every year they hold it to officially welcome the children who have reached a certain age, onto the path to adulthood. It's a sort of transition, marking the start of puberty where they'd start being given more responsibility and taught more about the ways of the tribe and of the world."
Goldie still looked skeptical. "And it's perfectly normal?"
"I went to Donald and Della's." Scrooge explained. "And Gladstone's and Fethry's. It's a perfectly safe ritual. No swearing oaths to any demons or even the Gods. No blood sacrifice and no magical incantation. Most of it symbolical."
"But that was before they had the spirits."
"Yes...Elvira did tell me that after the spirits went quiet they had to change a few things and that they wanted to do something with Donald and Della's powers...but she told me that everything would be fine!"
A knock at the door.
"We're decent!" Goldie shouted.
The door opened a crack. "That is not very reassuring."
Scrooge sighed. "It's fine Beakley. Yer safe."
A moment of hesitation before Beakley deemed it safe to step in. She eyed the woman on the bed.
"I suppose I should thank you for coming. Louie and Webby were happy when you said so."
Goldie shrugged, but a small smile graved her beak. "It's my pleasure. Not looking forward to getting up early though."
"The ceremony traditionally takes place at sunrise, to symbolize the beginning of their new lives." The ex-spy explained. "Webby's been so excited for this ever since Elvira said she could participate. She wants to make sure she doesn't make any mistakes."
"She's going to be just fine!" Scrooge reassured her. "There's going to be a rehearsal in a few hours to help the kids feel more confident." He frowned. "I'm just worried about Elvira though...she's been in a tizzy the past few days."
"She's probably just stressed trying to organize all of us."
"Probably. But there's also been this tension with the Chieftess ever since we...lost the stones."
"They can't blame her for that!" Goldie stated. "It's not her fault Hortense is a bitch."
"But she was the Guardian, It was her duty to make sure the stones were safe. From Chieftess Citali's point of view, Elvira failed and brought bad luck by allowing me in. And she sees Elvira as a coward by keeping her role as Guardian secret from her family."
"Well, not her grandchildren are powered by the stones and her great-grandchildren by the spirits. She can't keep calling Elvira a failure now."
"You haven't met Chieftess Citali yet. She's not one to change her mind easily."
"My appreciation again to your grandmother," Violet said as the kids gathered around an old, shaded tree near a pond. "It is an honor to witness such an important event and to experience a culture vital to Calisota's history."
"It's fine." Louie casually waved a hand. "Lots of people bring their friends and family to this."
"This is so exciting!" Webby eagerly shook Lena's arm. "Elvira said that this will induct me as an official member of the tribe! I'm going to be part of our nation's history!"
Gale swirled around them, matching Webby's enthusiasm.
"That's great pink. I'm happy for you."
"It's more than 'great'! It won't just be my induction into the tribe, it'll mark my transition into womanhood!"
"The beginning of it, at least." Huey said, looking over a notebook with Violet, Bruni on his hat.
"And thank all of you for inviting us to this special occasion!" Boyd said.
"Gaze upon me!" Dewey stood tall on a large rock. "For at this time tomorrow I shall no longer be Dewey the boy. I shall be Dewey the man!"
Gosalyn rolled her eyes as she walked over and gently pushed him into the pond. "Try to find a bigger rock next time Mr. Man."
A wave emerged from the water and deposited a very cross Dewey on the ground.
June, petting Twyla, looked around. "Where's May?"
"I'm here!" May ran over, gasping for air.
"Woah." Louie rolled over a stone for her to sit on. "You ok?"
"Busy...helping set up..."
"You should take a break." Huey said. "Besides, we still have the rehearsal later."
"Just...making sure everything is perfect."
"It's going to be great!" June grinned. "Grandma said I get to help her with the opening spell!"
"I know. You nearly started three fires in our room."
Lena eyed Twyla as the feline rubbed against her legs. "This....really is a big deal for you guys isn't it?"
"It's huge!" Dewey exclaimed. "Mom and Uncle Donald did it when they were our age! And their dad! And Grandma! We get to follow in the steps of our ancestors and continue a grand tradition that has lasted centuries!"
The pebbles around Louie began to bound up and down. He put his hand on the ground.
"Someone's coming."
"I got this!" Webby swirled her hands and created a gust of wind that lifted her high in the air.
"What is it!?" Gosalyn shouted.
"It's just an old lady!" She shouted down. "Wearing traditional clothing!"
The triplet stiffened.
"It's Chieftess Citali!" Huey exclaimed.
"Dewey, go get Grandma." Louie ordered. "We'll stall."
Dewey nodded before making a break for the farmhouse.
"Did everyone settle alright!?" Elvira paced as he twin grandchildren helped her prepare the feast. "Do you think we'll have enough to feed all of them!?"
"Relax grandma." Della said as she got out paper plates. "Everyone brought snacks and the other families are making meals too."
"I have just checked in with yellow Della." Penny said as she walked in. "And everyone as settled in peacefully. Though..." She held up a sleeping goose. "I did find him behind one of the pig pens."
"Gus!" Elvira scolded, waking the man.
"Huh-oh Grandma I was just resting my eyes-"
"You can rest them after everyone eats! Go help Launchpad and Daisy with decorations!"
"No need!" Daisy strutted in. "Decorations are all done and they look fantastic! Launchpad went to go check on Drake."
"Oh thank goodness..then can you make sure all the animals are secure? The last thing we need right now is for one of the chickens laying in the tents."
With a swift salute, Gus was off.
"Are you alright Elvira?" Penny asked. "I have never seen you this...agitated."
Donald sighed from where he was crushing nuts. "Is the Chieftess still giving you a hard time?"
"Yes." She nodded. "Even though the spirits are back, she still blames me for losing them in the first place."
"But we have them back!" Della held up her amulet. "And the stones!...Technically. And we did because of you!"
"You did because you're brave and good-hearted. All I did was lie to you your whole lives."
"...Okay yeah that still stings, but we would be completely lost without you!"
Penny nodded. "Indeed, it was your insight and knowledge about the spirits that helped tame them."
"Thank you. But the return of the spirits means this Ceremony is even more important than before. Everything has to be perfect!"
"You're sounding like May." Daisy said. "She's been working herself to the bone helping organize everyone here. Neither of you has to prove anything!"
"She doesn't of course. But I do! I failed my duties before, I want my great-grandchildren's ceremony to go off without a hitch."
"Let us worry about the kids." Donald took her hand. "And don't worry about the Chieftess, we all think she's an old sourpuss anyway."
"Donald!" Elvira's voice was scolding but she was smiling nonetheless. "She has a lot on her plate keeping our tradition and history alive."
"Doesn't have to be such a stick in the mud about it." Della said.
"Grandma!" Dewey threw the back door open. "The Chieftess is here!"
Elvira sucked in a breath. "Well...time to get this over with."

Chapter Text
Chieftess Citali was a tall Towhee with greying hair and steely eyes. She had been the leader of the People of the Stars for decades, working hard to preserve their traditions and passing them down to the next generation.
Even to the people outside her tribe, she had an aura of respect.
Huey and Louie stood front and center to greet her, backs straight and with polite smiles.
"Blessed be Chieftess Citali!" They said in sync.
"Blessed Be Huey." She smiled at the boys. "Blessed be Louie. It is so good to see both of you again and on the eve of your coming of age."
"Woah." Lena murmured as the other kids hung back. "She's getting Louie to act respectful and polite. Now I'm scared to piss her off!"
"Good." Chieftess CItali eyed her, and the teen shrunk back. "Before you introduce me to your friends, I must make sure that the spirits really are here."
Huey held out his hands and Bruni crawled out from his sleeve onto one of them while Huey created a flame in the other.
Louie, meanwhile instantly grew a prickly cactus while small rocks rolled themselves around the Chieftess's feet.
Citali looked in awe. "Incredible...they really have awoken. And they have blessed you with their gifts. This truly is a wonderful year for our tribe!"
"And it's not just fire and earth!" Gale swirled around the Chieftess and Aqua walked on the lake as a deer while Webby launched herself into the air before gently landing in front of the astonished elder.
"Hi! I'm Webby!"
"Webby McDuck." The Chieftess nodded. "I have been told about you, air child. The People of the Stars are always open, blood or not, so I am honored to welcome you with the ceremony tomorrow."
Webby looked like she was going to cry.
"And these are our friends." Huey led her to the group. "We invited them to watch. We...actually invited quite a few people."
"Hi!" Boyd said with his usual cheerfulness. "I'm Boyd. A definitely real boy."
"Of course." The Chieftess nodded. "We are all free to express our gender however we choose."
"Surprisingly chill for an old lady." Gosalyn grinned. "Name's Gosalyn Waddelmayer."
"Our people have always kept an open mind about gender and sexuality. It is believed we all have energies from both the Goddess and the Horned God, feminine and masculine, inside us that manifest in different ways."
"Fascinating." Violet wrote everything down. "Violet Sabrewing. I'm here to watch and learn."
The Chieftess looked very pleased by this. "I'm glad to hear that. Once the Ceremony is over, I'll be more than happy to answer any questions if I have the time. I can also have my grandchildren help you if you wish."
Lena took a deep breath. "Lena De...Sabrewing. I'm Violet's sister."
Violet looked at her sister in surprise.
"She's a sorceress!" Webby added.
"Truly?" The Chieftess looked at her curiously.
Lena waved her hand and telekinetically moved some rocks in a circle.
"We are always honored to have members of the magical community among us. In spite of what you may hear, magic is as natural as the wind or the grass."
Lena blinked, pleasantly surprised by the reaction.
Louie brought a nervous May and an eager June forward. "And these are our cousins. May and June. Uncle Donald's girls.
"May and June. We are glad to welcome you to the tribe and to be part of our history. Now..." She looked at June. "I have been told you are apprenticing under Elvira, learning to be a nature witch."
June nodded energetically. "I've been working really hard!"
"Then let us hope you turn out better than your grandmother."
The blue girl frowned.
"And do you possess magic?"
May shifted uncomfortably. "I...well...not really?"
The Chieftess raised an eyebrow, and May felt like sinking in the dirt.
"Dewey's here!" Dewey ran up, huffing and puffing.
"Nice to see you too Dewey."
"Chieftess Citali." Elvira approached, back straight, followed by her grandchildren and everyone else a few feet behind.
The Chieftess likewise straightened her posture and folded her hands, her eyes turning cold. "Elvira. It's been a while."
It felt like someone could cut the tension with a butter knife.
"I suppose it has."
"Are you finally done hiding your past?"
"Yes. And I've worked hard to make up for it every day."
"We'll see."
"Chieftess CItali!" Della strode forward. "Looking good! How have things been? Is that a new walking stick?"
The Chieftess leveled her gaze and Della gave a nervous chuckle.
Donald just sighed and stood beside his grandmother, giving her a comforting pat on the shoulder. "Blessed Be, Chieftess."
"Blessed Be Donald. Della. I see some things haven't changed, even after all these years." Her eyes focused on the amulets. "The stones..."
"Yup." Della held up her moon necklace. "These are the stones alright. Or, what's left of them." She held up a glowing hand. "Still got the magic, but now we're in control of it.....most of the time."
The Chieftess carefully took the amulet in her hand, turning it over. Then her eyes drifted to the Scotsman approaching. She glared. "McDuck."
"Chieftess."
"I hope you are not here to ruin another of our traditions."
"That was not his fault." Elvira said. "We've talked about this."
"And we can talk about it some more later, the other children are waiting to rehearse. We want this ceremony to go perfectly after all. Come along everyone."
Donald and Della glanced at each other.
This was going to be a very tense three days...
Chieftess Citali led them through the woods to the People of the Stars reservation.
"Of course," She explained to Violet. "Most of us live in the nearby towns in modern housing. I live with my Grandchildren in the family home in Quacktown. But several of us take the time to come out here to make sure everything isn't too damaged by the weather. Some of us even sleep here and live as we did in the old days."
They arrived at the main celebration area, where people young and old, walked, ran, playing, helping set up. Around them were large, circular homes of redwood bark and earth.
The moment the Chieftess stepped foot into the area, people began to respectfully bow or nod their heads at her.
"I will take the participating children to the Dance House to rehearse for tomorrow." The Chieftess announced. "I ask that everyone else stays here; you can help set up, eat and mingle. Elvira, Donald, Della, would you accompany me?"
"We'll be back soon." Donald gave Daisy a quick kiss.
"Just try to enjoy yourself." Della hugged Penny quickly before following the Chieftess away.
"Gah." Gyro groaned. "Now we have to socialize? With strangers? If you need me I'll be in a hidden corner somewhere." He did a dramatic turn and walked away.
Daisy looked over the jewelry on the stand.
"All of this has been handcrafted based on traditional designs."The young woman attending the stand, a young titmouse wearing adorned in handmade jewelry, told them. "All proceeds from this festival go to the tribal fund for upkeep of our sacred sites, future festivals, you know?"
"These are all beautiful."
"Thanks! I also run a shop in Quacktown and an online store." She handed Daisy a card. "My name's Amber Goldleaf."
"Really? My name's Daisy Duck and I have a boutique in Duckburg. And I think a section of traditional native jewelry and such would be a big hit."
"Really! I would love-"
"Sorry to interrupt." Fenton gave a nervous smile. "I actually need Daisy's advice for a minute."
"Of course!" Daisy quickly handed Amber her own business card.
"I just..." Fenton looked over the impressive display of jewelry. "I just want to get something for Gandra and my M'ma but...I'm not really a jewelry kind of guy..."
"Say no more!" Daisy looked over the collection again before selecting a chocker and a pair of earrings. "The earings for your mom because she wears them and they won't get in the way of catching criminals, and a chocker for Gandra because it won't interfere with her nanites."
"They're perfect!" Fenton gave Daisy a grateful smile. "I'll take them."
"Good choice." Amber up the earrings. "These are made from smokey quarts to prove protection and survival instincts. And see the design of the chocker? It's a shield knot and it also provides protection against negative energy and demons."
"These designs are very unique." Violet walked over, carrying a headband she had purchased. "They're a beautiful blend of other Native American designs and those found in the more Celtic regions. See the cross pattern here? And the diamond shape in the background?"
"We like to stick out from the crowd." Gladstone said as he picked up a stray twenty-dollar bill, which he handed to the seller. "This one's on me. Keep the change."
Fenton smiled. "Thank you Mr. Gander!"
"'Mr. Gander was my father, just Gladstone. And anything for a friend of the family. As for the designs, I don't really know what to tell ya kid; it's just always been that way. I'm not the best at history."
"I think I saw a few people answering questions earlier. "Daisy said. "Why don't we find one of them and see if they can offer any insight. I'm curious about this myself!"
Violet and Fenton took out their notebooks and nodded eagerly as Gladstone matched Daisy's pace.
"Smart, ambitious, and has good taste?" He asked as Violet and Fenton exchanged notes. "Which pile of treasure did Donald find you in?"
"Oh, we sort of found each other." She shrugged. "And there isn't a day that goes by where I'm not grateful for that."
That got a chuckle. "Lucky him then."
Gosalyn dragged Drake over to the archery field, where targets had been set up and archers demonstrated how to shoot using their tribes' bows and arrows.
"Cool!" Gosalyn was leaning on the safety rope that marked the field. "See how that one's not pulling all the back? That way you can shoot more, faster."
"They do seem to be very effective weapons." Penny nodded, standing beside Fethry and Abner, who was carrying Dugan on his shoulders.
"Prefer an ax myself." Abner said.
"I'm a lover, not a fighter." Fethry shrugged. "Remember when you tried to teach me archery?"
"You somehow managed to nearly take Donald's eye. And he was standing ten feet behind you."
"Good times!"
Then they began offering lessons and Gosalyn was quick to volunteer.
"Just be careful!" Drake called as they led her to a target.
"Yknow..." Abner looked up at his son. "My dad said it was the Horned God who taught our tribe how to hunt and fish, and the Goddess how and when to plant our crops."
"I wonder if they have any spear demonstrations." Penny wondered. "The more battle forms you know, the better."
"Did you have anything like this on the Moon?" Fethry asked.
Drake half heard them as he focused on Gosalyn getting a quick lesson on how to use her borrowed bow. He smiled when she hit the target's edge."
Abner looked between her and Drake. "Your daughter's a natural.
"Huh?" Drake nearly jumped. "Oh...uh, she's not really my...I'm actually her foster parent for the time...it's complicated."
"It always seems complicated...at first." Penny nodded with approval when Gosalyn hit the center.
"Can I try daddy?" Dugan asked. "Please?"
"Maybe when yer a little bigger. Those things are heavy." He looked around. "C'mon, why don't you try your hand at basket weaving? See if you can make something for your mom."
They watched as Abner walked away.
"Isn't he great?" Fethry asked eagerly.
"I like him." Penny nodded. "He knows how to value silence."
"He's a good dad." Drake paused. He leaned in so Fethry didn't hear. "But I'm pretty sure he's killed a guy before."
"It is likely." Penny shrugged. "And I am sure it was not done sloppily."
The food tables consisted of a mishmash of pizza, chips and burgers and fish, nuts, and what Bentina assumed were traditional food snacks.
"I assume they're saving most of the bigger meals for tomorrow." She observed as Launchpad began to fill his plate.
"One of my chefs is a member." Donna said as she filled her own plate. "He's amazing! He makes a few traditional dishes at my bar so prepare your tastebuds!"
"I may not have tastebuds," Boyd said as he and Gandra looked over the layout. "But my sensors are being prepared!"
Gandra took a small snack and plopped it into her mouth. "Mm. Not bad. What are these?"
An elder, a male black bear in traditional clothing setting out plates smiled at her. "Fresh caterpillar! Very good once you add a little butter."
Gandra's eyes went wide as she felt her stomach flip.
Donna gently walked her to the drinks. "Yeah, I should've warned you they keep the bug snacks away from the regular ones. They're actually pretty tasty once you've had a few of them."
"I'll say!" Launchpad tossed a cooked cricket into his mouth. "Mmm. Crunchy! I can't wait to see what they put out tomorrow."
"Thank you." The elder nodded. "But we usually only cooked up insects when the meat got scarce or if our crops didn't do so well. They're very nutritious."
"Indeed!" Boyd nodded as he chewed on a grasshopper. "Once properly cooked, there's a large variety of insects that are safe to eat. The Junior Woodchuck Guidebook Survivalist section has several recipes."
"I ate a whole bunch of bugs on our last camping trip." Launchpad grabbed a few locusts. "Course I probably should've cooked them instead of eating them raw. Hey Mrs. B! You want any?"
"No thank you!" Beakley replied, perhaps a little too quickly. "I....want to save some room for tomorrow!"
"I think one's enough." Gandra downed a can of pep as though her life depended on it. "Please tell me I'm not going to burp up a butterfly or a moth later."
'You're good." Donna patted her back in sympathy.
"And it wouldn't have been the worst thing I've eaten." She shuddered. "Fried tarantula is actually considered a delicacy in Cambodia."
Donna and Gandra looked at each other before gagging.
As they walked, Goldie noticed some of the older members of the tribe glaring at Scrooge as they walked by. "I take it you aren't too popular around here?"
"Considering I broke their most sacred relics," Scrooge looked around warily. "I'd say they aren't my biggest fans."
"You did it to keep them away from Merlock."
"And I think that's the only reason they tolerate me at these things. That and for Donald and Della."
'Which, all things considering..."
"Don't. Sometimes we just have to wait for bad memories to fade. Anyway, most of the games and activities won't be set up until tomorrow so I'm afraid there's not much for us to do today."
"Looks like something's happening over there." Goldie gestured to a fairly large crowd of guests and children. They all appeared to be focused on what the speaker, a blue quail was saying. Scrooge then noticed Lena and Gyro among the listeners.
"I think she's telling a story about the tribe's history." Intrigued, they headed over.
"-the tale of how our people began!" The woman exclaimed dramatically. "It began when the Triple Goddess and the Horned God, their love brought forth the universe and everything we know. As a symbol of their love for their creation, they created two stones of great power: the sunstone which contained the power of the sun and the Horned God, and the moonstone, which held the power of the moon and the triple Goddess. These stones were meant to protect us, but evil forces sought out that power for themselves. To keep that power out of the wrong hands, the Gods hid them in a place where no one would find them without them knowing.
Many ages passed when a set of twins appeared; Tayen and Tawa. Abandoned by their people, they wandered the earth for days growing tired and hungry but still looking out for each other. Then one day a mighty storm hit and they were forced to take shelter in a cave! After exploring for a while, they came across the stones! Marveling at their power, the twins pondered what to do with them. Would their power help them survive in this cruel world?
Then, who should appear before them but the Gods themselves! They had seen their struggles and offered to help...on one condition.
One twin would have to sacrifice the other to obtain the magic of the stones."
"Yep." Goldie quipped. "Classic God mentality right there."
"Doesn't sound like the Gods we've been meeting." Scrooge noted.
"The siblings were shocked and horrified! They refused to comply, even when the Horned God threatened to kill both of them for trespassing! They turned to flee when the Goddess stopped them.
For you see...it had been a test. By refusing to turn on each other for power, even on a deity's command, they had shown bravery and loyalty. They were then offered a deal; if they stayed and protected the stones from those who would use them for evil, they were free to settle the land and have all their needs provided for.
As so they did; the land that had been bathed in magic proved to be a paradise! Food and game were plentiful and the spirits protected them from any threat. Soon others joined them, those who had no tribe to call their own. The woman, Tayen, became the first Chieftess while her brother, Tawa, was taught magic by the spirits and became the personal attendant of the stones, a true shaman. And since then The People of Stars have lived on this land, leaving in harmony with nature."
The crowd clapped and cheered while the woman gave a bow.
"Huh." Lena wondered aloud. "Compared to some other mythology stories, this one was pretty nice. Tayen and Tawa stuck by each other, even with all that power right in front of them."
"It's also interesting to note," Gyro said as he typed something on his tablet. "Is that she specifically said they were twins. Not just siblings."
"Twins...like Donald and Della?"
"Yes. Twins in many Native American tales were considered to be good luck, or spiritually powerful."
"I see you did your research." The storyteller smiled at them. "And I'm glad you liked the story. Another interesting fact is that The People of the Stars have an unusually high rate of twins and other multiples."
"As ye can see in our family at least." Scrooge tipped his hat. "Nice to see ya again lass."
"Mr. McDuck! It's nice to see you again! So is it true-"
"You know each other?" Lena asked.
The storyteller blushed. "Oh, sorry about that. My name's Anpao. I'm assuming you met my grandmother?"
"Grandmother?" Goldie glanced at Scrooge, who fiddled with his cane nervously.
"Chieftess Citali. Or as I call her, granny."
"Aye." Scrooge nodded. "And we met her when she came to get us fer the rehearsal...."
Anpao's smile faltered. "She didn't say anything too bad, did she? I know she's still ticked at Auntie Elvira-"
"Auntie Elvira?" Gyro asked, scratching his head.
"Yeah. She and my granny are cousins."
"Cousins?" Lena gasped and even Goldie was shocked.
"Cornelius Coot's wife was the sister of the Chieftess at the time. Which may or may not add to the tension. I wouldn't worry about the rehearsal too much, my twin should be able to keep her calm."
"You're a twin too?"
"Yup! My twin, Aadhira, was looking over the children when Granny left to get you guys. And I myself have my own triplets." She pointed to three children in the arts and crafts area, all sharing her features. "Two girls and a boy. They'll be participating next year."
"Woah. You were not kidding about the multiples thing..."
"You think that's neat? I know a guy who had octuplets! Eight babies! I do not envy their fertility. So anyway, Aadhira and I are helping Granny with the ceremony. So any questions you have, just come to us! In the meantime..." She looked at Scrooge expectantly. "Is it true? About the spirits and the stone's power returning?"
"Every bit of it. Had to go on a few adventures to get them all, but now they're at the dance hall."
"Wow...I mean, my twin and I always thought Granny and the elders were pulling our legs with the whole 'magic stones' and spirits thing. I mean, it sounds crazy right?"
"Crazier things have happened." Goldie grinned at Scrooge.
"I've seen you guys in the news. I believe it." Someone called out her name. "I have to go check on that, but enjoy yourselves! And get to bed early, the ceremony's at sunrise!"
"Magic really is a big deal to these people." Lena noted.
"Very." Scrooge agreed. "They believe magic is as natural as a tree or a running river. And they don't just have the stones or the spirits, there's the Demon Dreamcatcher."
"The what?"
"Each participating child says a vow promising to do their best to help their community on the road to adulthood while holding the Dreamcatcher. It's a magical artifact that captures and drives away demons and evil spirits from the area. It's supposed to symbolize the Gods offering their support and protection during this critical time in their lives."
"Not bad." Goldie mused. "Practical in keeping the bad things away while being useless to anyone wanting to use it for evil, so not really worth taking."
"And the magic is real?" Lena narrowed her eyes. "It's not just superstition?"
"I managed to sneak a peek at it and it's magical, but not in a way that can harm anyone."
"Makes sense to have something like that." Gyro nodded. "There must've been quite a few people looking to take their magic for themselves, even if it was just based on rumors. Even if the stones were written off as just a rumor, the physical, magical beings hanging around still put a target on these people's backs."
"Like Merlock?" Lena asked softly.
"Exactly. And who knows what other evil mages or monsters or even just a rival tribe wanting this land for themselves."
She smirked at him. "Nice to see you having a good time tech guy."
"I couldn't find a quiet place to sit." Gyro muttered as he hurried away.
The dance hall was a much larger version of the homes, but with weapons, jewelry, and pottery lining the walls and a large fire pit in the center, and two doors that, according to Huey, were positioned to catch the sunrise and sunset.
The Chieftess stood on stage. "Given that the spirits and the stones have been returned to us, I believe it is time to bring back some traditions that were lost when they slept. With a few adjustments. Huey, Dewey, Louie, Webby, Della, and Donald, please meet me in the back. In the meantime, Aadhira will lead the rehearsal in my stead."
The Chief's grandchild, a blue quail, stepped forth eagerly. "Alright everyone, it's really easy! You just line up according to your number and come up on stage to the altar when I call your name. I say the sacred words, you repeat yours back while holding this!" They held up a dreamcatcher. The ring was about the size of a basketball hoop, it was adorned with bright, colorful feathers, and beads and the strings were done in an elaborate star.
"It's so pretty!" May whispered to June.
"It's like one rainbow inside of another!"
"This dream catcher has been with our tribe since the beginning." They put it on the altar. "Of course, we won't use it until tomorrow, so we'll just use this." They held up an embroidery hoop of about the same size. "Grab it gently, say the words, the god bless you with protection, Granny welcomes you to adulthood and then you walk off stage. Let's start!"
Besides the manor kids, there were only ten other children participating. Still, a few stumbled with their lines and Aadhira gently guided them along.
"Oh my gosh, look!" The girl in front of May pointed to where the Chieftess was talking. "It's the Coot-Duck's. The ones with the magic!"
Then Donald held up a hand, revealing a glowing ball.
"Woah!" The boy in front of the first girl gasped as the other kids took notice as each member gave a brief demonstration of their powers.
"My grandpa said they used to do this with the spirits, maybe they're going to do it again?"
"And that's the shaman's apprentice." Another kid pointed to June and Elvira going over their supplies. "She's learning magic too?"
"Hey, are you twins?" One of the girls turned to May. "You look exactly alike."
May ran her hand over her ponytail. "I..yeah."
"So why aren't you helping the Shaman?"
"I...it's not really my thing..."
"Maybe she has a different kind of magic like the others!" A boy exclaimed excitedly.
"Everyone else has magic why shouldn't she?"
May's breathing became faster...
"I bet it's super cool!"
"I-"
'Hi May!" June waved as May's heart nearly stopped. "What are you talking about?"
Before May could explain, a girl pointed at her and shouted. "She was about to tell us about her super awesome magic!"
It took a great deal of self-restraint to keep her from punching the girl and running.
June blinked. "Oh! She doesn't have any magic." Elvira called out June's name. "I gotta go, have fun!" She left, leaving her sister alone with a thousand eyes on her.
"You don't have magic?" A boy asked.
"No." May confessed. "But magic or no magic, I'm just as special as everyone else in my family!"
There was a shout from above, and they watched Webby happily flying around the room, doing flips while Dewey swirled water around in various shapes and Donald made a rainbow.
"I did it!" He cried out joyfully.
"...Maybe your talent is being in denial."
May clenched her fists.
She would show them she was worthy of being part of her family. She would!
But how?
Notes:
Right now, I'm basing some of the People of the Stars traditions/culture on the Cahto and Wintun tribes, two California tribes that dwelt in the forest. If anyone has any other suggestions let me know!

Happy Memorial Day!
Chapter Text
"Hey, Grandma?"
"Hm?" Elvira looked up from the altar to address her yellow-clad granddaughter. "I'm sorry honey, I'm just a little busy..."
"I know, and I wanted to help with that!"
"What-"
"I thought that I could help you and June with the opening ritual. I...I just want to do my part to help."
Elvira sighed and smiled tiredly. "Sweetheart...I appreciate the offer, but the entire tribe is counting on us to make this year's ceremony perfect. June already practiced and studied to help me. Right now you can do your part by participating like the other kids. Ok?"
May gave what, she hoped, was a polite smile while trying not to let any of her disappointment in her voice when she said; "Ok."
Once she was out of earshot, she gave a sigh. How was she going to prove herself now?
It took a total of eight rehearsals before Chieftess Citali and Elvira decided they were ready, by which point over half the kids were falling asleep standing up.
"Now we are ready for tomorrow!" Chieftess Citalit announced. "Now everyone go get plenty of rest, we start early!"
"Nnggggg...." Louie groaned as he slowly walked back with everyone. "And I thought Mrs. B was a drill sergeant..."
Even June looked ready to curl down on the grass and sleep. "Grandma's really nervous, I think I can do the ritual in my sleep."
"And I can recite the words forwards and backwards." Webby yawned. "But it'll all be worth it! This is just a minor step in our journey to adulthood!"
"Right..." May mumbled. Her sisters and cousins got to do exciting and important things at the ceremony and all she had to do...was say a few words, just like all the other kids.
What a way to show she was worthy of being part of her family.
As everyone settled into their tents and rooms, she couldn't help but feel dread about tomorrow.
Was she really ready to go through with it?
"Rise and shine everyone!" May pressed a button on her phone, unleashing a military-style ringtone, causing everyone to jump out of bed, stand in line and salute her.
"Ready to receive orders General!" Webby shouted in full seriousness.
Louie blinked as his brain caught up. "What, what we doing? This isn't boot camp! I'm going back to bed..."
'He's going AWOL!" Dewey shouted before tackling his brother to the ground.
"No going back to bed!" May commanded. "We've got to get ready for the ceremony!"
Huey looked at the clock and gasped. "She's right! Where did I put our outfits? We need to get mom and Uncle Donald-"
"Dad's waking everyone in the house and Penny is getting everyone outside." She opened the closet, where their outfits specially made for today hung. "And our outfits are right here. Boys can get dressed in the bathroom and girls in here. Now there's no time to waste! Move! Move!"
Goldie groaned and covered her head with a pillow. "Remind me why I agreed to this?"
"Because it's important to the kids." Scrooge put on his coat. "The ceremony's usually not too long and a lot of people go back to sleep before joining in the celebration."
"I just thought you didn't want to do it under Elvira's roof."
Scrooge went scarlet. "Well...I..."
She gave him a playful peck on the cheek. "Later, when everyone's out of the house."
"...Of course."
"Nnnngggg....." Lena forced he eyes open and found herself looking into dark blue ones.
Twyla gave a soft meow before licking her beak.
"Good morning to you too."
"She was waiting at the entrance when I awoke." Violet shrugged. "Perhaps she is sensitive to magical signatures?"
"Or she liked waking people up way too early."
"Actually, the ceremony will be starting soon, so it appears she has designated herself to be your alarm cat."
"Look at you with the puns. Papi's gonna cry when we get back."
"How's my flower crown?" May asked, wishing for a mirror. "It feels off."
"Here." Daisy gently adjusted it. "How's that?"
"Better. Thanks mom."
They were gathered outside the dance hall, where the kids were getting last-minute comfort and preparation from their parents while everyone else sat inside, waiting for it to begin.
"Ow!" Webby winced as she rubbed her neck. "I think one of my feathers is caught in my necklace."
"Let me see." Goldie knelt down and carefully got the feather out.
"Five minutes!" Aadhira shouted from the entryway.
"We shall wait inside." Penny gave Della a quick kiss. "I know you shall be magnificent."
"Deep breaths Huey..." Huey muttered to himself, repeating the breathing technique Donald had shown him.
"Yer all going to be fine." Scrooge gave Webby a hug before following the other adults inside.
"Okay, smile everyone!" Della cheered her kids. "We've got this! This is going to be the best ceremony yet!"
The kids all let out a loud cheer....except for May who could only muster a weak smile and nod.
The inside of the dance hall was dimly lit with the glow from a small ball of light Donald had made as everyone, aside from those who physically couldn't, sat on mats waiting for the ceremony to begin.
"Donna's gonna bring Dugan by later." Abner explained to Launchpad. "It felt like too much trouble to get a four-year-old up and ready this early."
"Getting up this early wasn't that big an issue for me." Drake told Fenton and Gandra. "My sleep schedule is already...er...chaotic to say the least."
"Give him two hours. Tops." Gosalyn smirked. "He'll crash on one of the picnic tables."
"I love the atmosphere in here." Ludwig told Matilda. "Gives a sense of foreboding."
"I wonder what their views on cats are." Gyro wondered as he and Boyd petted Twyla, who had set herself comfortably on Gyro's lap.
Above them, the light went out, plunging the hall into darkness.
"I didn't do it!" Launchpad exclaimed.
"No, I think it means, it's beginning." Beakley whispered.
Without warning, the firepit came alive as it and the torches along the walls were lit on their own, soliciting gasps and cheers from the audience.
"Everyone!" Chieftess Citali announced as she stood on stage, flanked by her grandchildren. "I welcome you all to this year's ceremony, where we witness the children's transition from childhood onto the road to adulthood!"
Loud applause and cheers filled the air.
"Before we begin, I have some exciting news. As you may or may not know, our tribe was dedicated and built to protect the sunstone and the moonstone, two magical artifacts created by the Goddess and God themselves. We worked in harmony with the spirits of fire, water, earth, and air to keep that secret and to bring prosperity to our people.
Unfortunately, over thirty years ago, an evil magician named Merlock came and tried to stake the stone's power for himself, resulting in their destruction in the chaos. As a side effect, the spirits were put to sleep.
But a few weeks ago, the magic of the stones reemerged, lending their powers to new guardians chosen by the Gods themselves! The magic of the Sunstone resides in Donald Duck-"
With a flash of lightning, Donald appeared on stage, giving a bow to the amazed crowd.
"as the magic of the moonstone resides in his twin sister, Della Duck-"
Della then went running and with a grandiose flip, landed on stage and shot a bolt to the ceiling that created a light snowfall. members of the audience raised their hands in awe and some )namely Launchpad and Fethry) stuck out their tongues.
"Very sweet!" Fethry nodded.
"And with their celestial magic, came the return of the spirits! They've traveled far and wide to bring them home. In turn, the spirits blessed their children with their own magic!"
A tower of fire appeared on stage, drawing gasps before settling, revealing Huey and Bruni, then the tub of water wobbled as Aqua formed a horse, with Dewey on their back.
The ground shook as Louie came cruising in on a pillar of stone made by Gaia which stopped right in front of the stage and he easily jumped off while causing flowers to grow on the stage's edge, which was followed by a shout from above as Gale carried her through the air before gently placing her on stage where Webby sent a gently breeze everyone's way.
The applause was deafening, especially coming from their friends and family!
"Way to go kid!" Gandra cheered and Fenton hollered.
"That water kid's name is Dewey and he's my best friend!" Launchpad shouted proudly.
"Yay Louie!" Boyd clapped.
"Alright! That's my girl!" Lena grinned.
"The Gods have seen to bless us for this year's ceremony." Chieftess Citali continued when the noise finally died down. "And we all must continue to do our part to keep theirs and the spirit's favors. Now let us begin with the opening ceremony!"
More cheers as The Chieftess's family and the ducks left the stage and Elvira and June made their way up.
"You were all really good." May forced herself to give the best smile she could. Because she really was proud of her family. Yup! No envy or feeling left out here!
"Are you sure?" Huey asked anxiously. "I think I almost caught Uncle Donald on fire again and-"
"The hard part's over at least." Louie sighed.
"We ask the maiden to watch over our youth as they begin this new phase of their life." Elvira recited as June waved a smudge wand over the stage. "Mother guide them to fulfillment and Crone grant them wisdom. Oak King open their eyes to the world and Holly King protect them from the dangers that lurk."
Soon the ritual was complete and Elvira and June vacated while the Chieftess's grandchildren stepped forward.
Aahdira held up the Demon Dreamcatcher. "This is the Demon Dreamcatcher! When our tribe was young, many dangerous forces sought to take the magic we were given for themselves. So the Goddess guided Tawa into crafting this, which catches and drives demons and evil spirits away from these lands. Since then every child entering adulthood asks for direct protection during this vulnerable time in their lives!"
"Really must look into making something similar..." Violet muttered.
"We are here today to witness the turning of the wheel of life. To witness children become adults and carry on our tribal duty!"
Anpao held up a basket. "When I call a name, that child shall step forth on stage and lay a hand on the dreamcatcher and take an oath to help our community and take their first step on the path to adulthood."
You could hear a pin drop as she reached into the basket and picked up a folded piece of paper.
She opened it and read; "May Duck!"
May took a deep breath and smoothed out her dress before making her way on stage. Glancing at the audience, she saw her parents giving her proud and encouraging smiles.
I have this...just need to say a few words and then.... you're done. Forgotten when they call the next kid.
She gently laid a hand on the side of the dreamcatcher.
"May Duck." Aahdira said before switching to the language of the stars; "Who are the people of the Stars?"
"We are the gateway, helping nature, magic and humanity live in harmony."
"What is our duty?"
"To keep the sun blessing our soil, the moon to keep our time, and the stars to guide us when we are lost."
"And do you swear to help carry on that duty? To aid the community with your gifts?"
May opened to mouth to speak when the fires when out, and the entire hall went dark.
"What's happening?"
"Huey what's going on?"
"I don't know!"
The sound of wood creaking signaled to May that someone was running up on stage. Was it the Chieftess?
"Granny do you-oof!"
Whoever it was knocked May to the floor before scurrying off.
"What was that!?"
"It sounded like May!"
"Are the spirits upset?"
"Let me try..."
Then the fires reignited, allowing everyone to see again.
"Is anybody hurt?" Elvira asked, looking around.
May looked around, Aahdira was on the floor rubbing their head.
"Aahdira!" Anpao went to help her twin.
"Wait!" Cheiftess Citali ran on stage and looked around. Her face went pale.
"The Demon Dramcatcher....it's gone!"
Chapter Text
The hall was drowning in chaos with people shouting, and asking questions, and the kids looking frightened.
"Everyone settle down!" Cheiftess Citali commanded. "Someone has taken the Demon Dreamwalker. Right now I ask that everyone remain where they are while I, Elvira, and my Grandchildren search around the hall. We will also ask to search through any bags you have brought." A few mumblings of displeasure. "I know you're upset, but this is a very important cultural item to us and I would rather not get the authorities involved on this sacred day just yet."
"Don't worry." Anpao whispered as she escorted May back to the kids. "You didn't do anything wrong, just stay with the other kids for the moment."
Before May could reply, she found herself caught in a bone-crushing hug.
"Are you ok!?" June asked as she squeezed tighter. "Did they hurt you!?"
"Can't breathe...June..."
"I think she's good." Louie nodded as June reluctantly let go. May took a deep breath...only to find herself lifted into another hug.
"Are you hurt!?" Donald frantically looked her over. "Are you bleeding!?"
"I'm fine dad!"
"Why would someone do this?" Webby asked, looking at the adults walking around, searching under furniture and in people's bags.
"Because we can't have one normal day in our lives." Louie grumbled.
"What if they can't find it?" Huey asked flames licking at his fingertips. "If they can't find it, we can't do the ceremony? I'll never be a man if we can't do the ceremony!"
"Huey, sweetie." Della held his hands, gently extinguishing the flames with her ice. "It's going to be fine. We just need to find whoever did this, snap their arm, and get the dreamcatcher back."
"Attention everyone!" Chieftess Citali announced back on stage. "I'm afraid the Demon Dreamcatcher is no longer in this hall."
A collection of gasps.
"Unfortunately this means we must halt the ceremony for now."
"Aw come on!" Della shouted. "Why!?"
The sky turned dark and a flash of lightning right outside seemed to answer her question.
Donald looked around. "Uh...that wasn't me."
Then the firepit burst almost to the roof while Bruni let out a squeak of rage.
"Woah!" Huey almost lost his hold on the spirit. "I don't think the spirits want us to continue!"
"Exactly." The Chieftess nodded. "Clearly, they are displeased by this, so until the Dreamcatcher is found, we ask that everyone remain on the grounds. We will be calling the police so for now you may leave the hall."
"C'mon kids." Donald gently herded them out. "Let's go get breakfast."
"We have to do something!" Dewey insisted.
"We can do something after we eat, our brains don't work well on an empty stomach."
But May's brain was already forming a plan.
This was how she was going to prove herself!
She was going to find that dreamcatcher and show everyone she was just as special as the rest of her family!
Unfortunately, it seemed like she had some competition...
"Alright Everyone!" Scrooge said, standing at the head of the tables his family and friends had taken. "We need to discover who took the dreamcatcher and why."
"Yeah, why would they take it?" Lena asked, taking a bite of her bagel. "It's not even that powerful; the only thing it does is keep bad spirits away."
"And demons." Violet added. "But most of it is passive magic, you can't use it to hurt anyone or gain power."
"Unless someone wanted to hurt the tribe." Gandra said, plopping a berry in her mouth. "Without the dreamcatcher, this place is now vulnerable to...bad spirits, demons, or whatever."
Fenton's eyes widened. "And if someone like Merlock wanted to hurt the tribe,..."
"Or someone part of it." Drake added.
"Or upset the spirits." Gosalyn turned to Dewey. "How are they?"
"Aqua's really concerned." Dewey frowned. "It's...we don't hear or understand them with words, it's more like...a feeling."
"Bruni's furious." Huey gently pet the little lizard to keep him from flaming up.
"And scared." Webby brushed her hair out of her face.
"And confused." Louie patted the ground.
"So we have a few motivations already:" Gyro typed something on his pad. "Leaving the tribe vulnerable to magical attacks, upsetting the existing spirits...anything else?"
"Elvira," Beakley asked the shaman. "What can you tell us about the Dreamcatcher itself? Is it made out of anything special? Would it even have any monetary value?"
Elvira thought for a moment. "The wood is made of maple, the beads are made from stone, shells, and various jewels, the string was a gift from the Navajo Spider Woman after The Goddess sent Tawa to learn from her, and the feathers came from the Great Raven after Tawa helped get him out of trouble."
"Woah." Lena said.
"But most ravens are dark in color." Boyd said. "Are the feathers dyed?"
"No, they're magic. After Raven gave them to Tawa, he instructed Tawa to burn them on Bruni's fire and cool them in Aqua, that's why they have all those beautiful colors."
"So I'm guessing making another one is out of the question?" Lena asked, stealing a pastry from Webby.
"Unfortunately. Unless somebody suddenly gets magical instructions from the Goddess and goes on the same journey Tawa did."
Everyone paused and looked at Della.
She closed her eyes and, after a minute, shook her head.
"Sorry, I got nothing."
The ground gave a, relatively, small shake.
"And I don't think the spirits can wait that long." Daisy noted, wiping up spilled milk off Donald.
"The string and feathers might hold some value in the magical community." Violet opened her book. "Especially since they came from powerful deities like Raven and Spider Woman, they might hold mystical properties outside the dreamcatcher."
May was writing everything in her own notebook. Every little bit helped. "They might also want it to protect themselves or someone else from demons."
"That's a good point." Abner nodded. "This can't be the only place dealing with spirits."
"What about a non-magical purpose?" Penny asked. "I have read articles about people stealing Native Artifacts for monetary value."
"I'm not sure." Scrooge looked thoughtful. "The gems on it are common ones you can find locally, but when you take the silk and feathers into account..."
"Not to mention the cultural significance." Goldie said, taking a sip of what May hoped was juice. "And the fact that it came from an unusually secretive and magical tribe, any museum or private collector would pay a pretty penny to get their hands on something like that."
Fenton scowled. "That's disgusting! They're stealing items from a culture just to show off?"
"Unfortunately, that's a common theme in history." Beakley sighed. "One of the most common jokes about the British History Museum is how almost none of the items on display are actually British."
"So... that's actually a lot of reasons for someone to take the Dreamcatcher." Launchpad noted.
"And we've got a whole of suspects." Drake looked around to the other tables.
Elvira scowled. "You're assuming that one of my tribespeople would steal from their own?"
"It's a possibility. I'm afraid we can't really count anyone out."
"We also need to add the other guests." Launchpad nodded.
"The first thing we need to do is go over what happened." Scrooge looked around. "Did anyone notice anything odd today or last night?"
"Nothing out of ordinary yesterday." Gladstone shrugged. "Everyone was in a tizzy with rehearsal and getting everything set up."
"The first thing I noticed was the fire going out." Fethry looked at Huey. "Did something happen with Bruni?"
"No...not that I noticed at least...."
"The whole hall went dark." Gosalyn said. "That could mean-"
"That whoever did it has magic." Scrooge said gravely. "Or magical assistance."
Louie stiffened. "So that means..."
"Merlock, Magica, Hortense, and Poe are at the top of our list. But we should be on the lookout for anyone else possessing magic. Lena, can you tell if someone's a mage or has a magical item?"
The teen shook her head. "Sorry. I can get a vibe sometimes but it's completely random."
"I'm afraid my own magic detector won't be ready until next week." Ludwig said.
"Still, Lena and Violet be on the lookout. May, did you notice anything on stage?"
May gave a quick glance at her notebook. "I don't know...it was pitch black and I wasn't up there long."
"What about when the culprit pushed you? Did it feel like a hand or just a force?"
"I..." Should she tell them the truth? That could lead to them finding the dreamcatcher before she did! But she didn't want to lie with her parents around...
"I don't remember."
"Are you sure-"
"There was a lot going on!" She snapped.
The other kids looked at her, surprised.
"Uncle Scrooge..." Donald said with a warning tone. "She's had a bad morning. If she remembers something later, she'll tell you."
"Of course. Elvira, any word on when the police will arrive?"
"Not for a while, I'm afraid." Elvira sighed. "They're always hesitant to get involved with our affairs, and since nothing like money or jewelry was taken this is 'low priority' for them, so we all might be here for a while."
"Then it looks like we're doing our own investigation. The longer we wait, the more likely it is the dreamcatcher will be taken off the land. We'll split up into teams and reconvene later."
"I'll go check out the stage again!" May quickly volunteered, cleaning up her half-eaten food. "To see if they left any evidence behind. I can handle it myself."
Scrooge eyed her. "I'd rather not have anyone go off by themselves, we don't know what we're dealing with yet."
"I'll be fine! I've faced magical beings before."
"I'll go with her." Lena offered, not noticing May's death glare. "That alright with you pink?"
"Of course!" Webby nodded.
"I'll join ya." Scrooge stood up. "See if I can't spot anything myself."
Phooey.
"This is a disaster!" Chieftess Citali paced back and forth while Aadhira, Elvira, Abner, and June watched in concern. The Chieftess had called Elvira to one of the houses to discuss the disappearance and June and Abner had come to support her.
"This is the first ceremony with the spirits and this happens!"
"Chieftess," Elvira said in a calming voice. "Scrooge and the rest of our family are working on locating the dreamcatcher."
"Yes, because involving him in our traditions worked so well last time!"
"Granny!" Aadhira gasped. "You know that wasn't his fault."
"If it weren't for Scrooge, Merlock would have the power of the stones." Abner said gruffly. "Then the whole world would be in trouble."
But Chieftess Citali glared at Elvira. "Yes, your family gave away the stone's location! Now you expect me to trust them again!?"
"Don't talk to grandma like that!" June shouted. "That wasn't her fault either!"
"Hortense and Quackmore were grown adults." Elvira said icily. "They made their choice. I won't be told I'm an idiot because I trusted my own son."
"And need we remind you," Abner huffed. "That her family now includes the two who inherited the stone's powers and four kids blessed by the spirits? I don't think they blame her."
The ground shook just enough for the cups on the table to bounce.
"Well if we don't find the Demon Dreamcatcher soon," The Chieftess said. "Then it won't just be the spirits to be feared. DO any of you know how vulnerable we are? Against demons? Against Merlock?"
"And we're working on it." Aadhira pleaded. "We're not leaving any spot unturned until the Dreamcatcher is found."
"June and I can cast some protective spells in the meantime." Elvira offered. "It should at least-"
The ground rumbled again, harder.
"What's happening!" The CHieftess shouted as her grandchild tried to keep her steady.
"Look!" June stood at the entrance and pointed into the distance, where a wall of stone was slowly emerging from the ground. "It goes all around the forest!"
"I'm afraid the earth spirit doesn't want anyone leaving!" Elvira clung to Abner. "Or entering!"
After another minute, the shaking stopped, and the wall stood still.
"That this must go on for miles." Abner said in wonder. "And it's gotta be at least a hundred feet high."
All around them, people were shouting, running, and clinging to their loved ones.
"I'll go calm everyone down." Chieftess Citali, brushed herself off. "But this has just confirmed my fears: the spirits are not pleased. The Dreamcatcher must be found quickly before they take more drastic measures.
We must protect our land! We must protect our people!"
Chapter 5
Notes:
Happy Juneteenth!
Chapter Text
Scrooge clung to the entrance of the hall. The earthquake seemed to be trying to knock him off his feet.
"MAY! LENA!" Where had they gone!? May had run into the hall when they arrived, he started chasing after her and lost sight of Lena-
"Uncle Scrooge!" May wobbled over, Twyla at her heals, and he held her tight, ready to cover her from any falling debris until the earthquake subsided.
"Are ya alright?" Seeing her nod, he sighed. "What were ya thinking? I told ya to stick close to me."
"I know but..." Her gaze wandered off and she froze when she saw the horizon. "I think we have bigger issues here."
He followed her gaze and gasped. "Curse me kilts! What is that thing!?"
"A wall." They looked up just as Lena landed. "It goes all around the reservation and then some. I think that's what the earthquake was all about."
"The kids were right." Scrooge muttered. "The spirits are upset about the Dreamcatcher going missing, and it looks like they don't want anyone leaving until it's found."
"And I'm guessing if you try to climb or fly over, the air spirit will have a word without." Lena sighed. "Looks like we're not going anywhere anytime soon."
"Then we need to hurry. We'll check the stage first. May, be sure to stay close to me."
May scowled. "I can handle myself."
"I know, but this is magic we're talking about. There could be lingering traces or some other curse. Best to have Lena check first."
May grit her teeth and kept quiet. How was she supposed to find the Dreamcatcher first if he wouldn't let her out of his sight?
The stage was just as they left it...aside from some damage from the earthquake of course. The alter was a mess, the goblet had spilled and was still dripping on the wooden stage. Thankfully, all the candles had been put out when they left.
Twla jumped on stage but found herself lifted in the air before she could take another step.
"Sorry kitty cat." Lena levitated the cat back to May. "Can't have you contaminating the crime scene." Slowly, she walked around the stage, eyes glowing. "I'm getting...something. It's familiar but I can't put my finger on it. Sunshine, do you remember anything yet?"
May bit her beak. "I...I think it was a hand that pushed me. Yeah! I remember the feeling now."
"Good to know. Also, I'm not seeing anything curse related so you two should be good."
Slowly, May made her way across the stage, Twyla looking around curiously in her arms. The floor was clean so no footprints..."Whoever did it must be athletic or sitting close enough to the stage that nobody noticed them getting up or being out of breath."
"That's still a lot of people." Scrooge tapped his cane. "Let's play out the events again. See if we missed anything the first time. The ceremony starts, The Chiefess makes her speech..."
"Then everyone does their magic scene." May looked around. "I don't think they noticed anything though."
"Elvira and June do the rite," Lena looked over the altar. "I sensed some magic with it, but nothing dangerous." She lifted the cloth, revealing a large wooden podium underneath, but no spaces to keep anything.
"The ceremony starts," Scrooge continued. "Aadhira held the Dreamcatcher and Anpao called out names. May is called up first and touches the Dreamcatcher, the lights go out."
"People are freaking out." May gently set Twyla down and stood where she had been knocked over. "Someone ran up on stage, I thought it was the Chieftess, but they knocked me and Aadhira over and grabbed the dreamcatcher. There was a lot of noise..." She frowned. "Wait...I think there was another thump just before the lights came on!"
"We'll keep that in mind." Scrooge scratched his chin. "The biggest question I have is how did they hide the Dreamcatcher? It was quite large so it'd be hard to find."
"Not to mention Aadhira and Anpao didn't find anything while searching." Lena noted.
May looked at the exits, the seating mats, and the altar. "Unless one, or both of them, were in on it."
"You sure about that?" Lena asked. "I mean, they're the Chieftess's grandkids! This is their family history!"
"They were also right here on stage, and they didn't search through their own bags. We can't rule them out."
"May's right." Scrooge nodded. "As much as I hate to think about it, we have to keep them on the suspect list. They were in too good of a position, and they were the last to leave, so they could've had the chance to move it again."
May looked at the exits again: There were two; east and west for the sunrise/set and moonrise/set. "There are only two exits and no windows, so they couldn't have just thrown it out the door, someone would've noticed something. So it still had to have been here when the lights came back on."
"And they smuggled it out while everyone was leaving," Scrooge continued. "Or they snuck back and got it while we were all at breakfast. Lena, do ya mind standing guard here for the rest of the day? Just in case somebody comes back."
"Sure." Lena sat on the edge of the stage. "Not like I've got other things to do..."
"I'll have Webby or Violet bring over food and keep you company. I would just feel better having someone I trust keeping an eye on the crime scene."
"But for what?" May kicked up some dirt. "We didn't find any clues!"
"But we have an idea of what happened. And who could've done this." Scrooge twisted his cane. "But yer right in that we need more evidence to narrow it down. I'll check in on the Chieftess, May can you-"
'Check to see if anyone else found anything!" She asked eagerly, not waiting for a response. "On it!" She ran out of the hall, Twyla running after her.
Scrooge narrowed his eyes. "Something is goin' on with her..."
"Gee, you think?" Lena snarked, earning a sigh from the old man.
May was nearly skipping as she spotted Ludwig and his group. If the others had found anything, she could put all the pieces together and find the Dreamcatcher! Then everyone would say she was just as special as her family!
"Hello Professor Von Drake!"
The elder man jumped, clutching onto his telescope. "Oh hello May! Hello Twyla! Did you find anything at the hall?"
May glanced down at the black furball that was sniffing the professor. She hadn't even realized Twyla had been following her. "A few things, but nothing concrete. What about you?"
Beakley just shook her head. "Right now, we're waiting for Boyd to come back, he's doing recon around the wall to see if there are any gaps we can use."
"I doubt it." Louie readily reached out to pet Twyla. "Gaia would know if anyone tried to scale the wall and forget about going underground."
May opened her notebook. "Do you know why she put it up in the first place?"
"To make sure nobody tried to run off with it." Louie patted the ground. "The woods around here are thick and it's easy to get lost...or disappear in. It's why Grandma and Uncle Donald never let us go off alone when we came to visit. I'm pretty sure she'll take it down once the Dreamcatcher's found."
Gyro raised an eyebrow. ""Pretty sure'?"
"Eh. Like we said: It's not like how you and I talk."
Boyd landed right beside them. "I couldn't find anything." He reached out and began petting Twyla too, much to the feline's delight. "It's made of solid stone and incredibly well built! I tried to fly over it and the air currents went wild!"
"So Gaia and Gale are making sure no one leaves..." Beakley murmured.
"So now I'm stuck out in... ugh, nature," Gyro groaned while shaking off a beetle. "Because somebody thought it would be a good idea to piss off a bunch of all-powerful spirits?"
"A little fresh air does wonders for the mind!" Ludwig took a deep breath. "Especially after you've spent decades locked up in a cell."
"And fresh food." Beakley nodded. "I've seen the takeout and ramen cartons in the lab bins, you need to expand your diet."
Gyro rolled his eyes. "First officer Cabrera and now you. Why is everyone so obsessed with my eating habits? If I can still work a computer then I'm fine."
"True that." Louie nodded. "I would kill for a can of pep right now."
"I also wish to talk with your mother and uncle about all your carbonated drinks." Beakley added. "These years are critical to your eating habits for the rest of your life."
"I can give you a list of healthy meals I'm sure you'll enjoy!" Boyd offered. "I have a list of your favorite foods, and you're eating habits. If you just let me do a quick scan of your taste buds..."
"Boyd." Gyro said. "What did we say about privacy?"
"That it's sacred and should only be invaded by invitation..."
May sucked in a breath. What were they doing!? Didn't they know there were in the middle of a crisis? "Hate to interrupt, but you all remember what's going on right?"
"People's minds need a break now and then." Ludwig shrugged. "Nobody's lives are currently in danger; there's no set time limit and studies have shown that taking a break now and then can help you work through a problem. In fact, when I was stuck working on my weather control device-"
"Great. Boyd, did you find anything else?"
"A few things. A few people wandering in the woods. I don't think they were in any real trouble, there were no signs of dangerous animals. Oh, and the Starry River is still running, Gaia must've made accommodations for that."
"Do you think any of them were trying to make a break for it?" Beakley asked. "Or tried to use the river as an escape means?"
"It didn't seem like any of them were in any real rush, but they might've when the wall went up."
"And I think Aqua's got the river handled." Louie added.
"So we're still stuck here." Gyro sighed, gently lifting Twyla off his tablet. "At least I brought my solar energy power converter."
"Alright then!" May shut her notebook. A few good leads but she needed more! "I'll go check in with the others!"
She had only reached a few feet them a hand grabbed the back of her dress. "May?"
"Yes Mrs. Beakley? I'm kind of in a hurry-"
"That's partly what I wanted to ask you about." She looked the girl over. "Are you alright? You seem a bit...jumpy."
May gave a big grin. "Just eager to clear this up so we can move on with the ceremony!"
Beakley narrowed her eyes, clearly not buying it. "Webby mentioned you seemed a bit upset yesterday as well. If you ever need to talk-"
"Thanks, but I'm fine!" She took small steps away.
The older woman just sighed. "Just know that you're not alone in this. We're all trying to find answers."
"Got it! See you later!" She was off again, Twyla following suit.
Beakley looked at Ludwig. "She's trying to find the dreamcatcher by herself."
"Yes, she always was eager to please." Ludwig looked thoughtful. "But she always involved her sister. Now she's trying to go at it alone..."
"Exactly. I'm afraid she's trying to bite more than she can chew.
And when people try to do that, they often end up choking."
May found Drake and Gandra talking to people about the theft with Huey and Violet writing everything down.
"Found anything yet?" May asked as the last interviewee left.
"Nothing much." Drake sighed as Twyla rubbed up against his legs. "It was too dark for anyone to see anything and nobody we talked to felt anyone near them get up or move around."
"They could be lying." Violet said. "Or if the person was sitting at the end of a row. This is why I detest the interview stage of investigations; most people's memories are incredibly faulty."
"I can't believe I didn't think to turn on my night vision." Gandra kicked the ground. "When the lights went out Fenton grabbed my hand and that's all I could focus on."
"Don't worry about it." Drake assured her. "Do you know how many times I-er Darkwing Duck forgets to bring his night-vision goggles when patrolling the streets?"
"You never need to apologize for being in love." Huey smiled.
May thought she saw Violet's face heat up, it was hard to tell with the coloring.
"Alright." Goldie walked towards them. "I managed to sneak a peak in nearly every bag, purse, duffle, and baby carriage here; a few handmade dreamcatchers but not the one we're looking for."
"Hey guys!" Launchpad waved while holding a piece of corn. "I talked to Kosumi, the guy at the meal table yesterday, and he said he didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, everybody was busy getting ready for the ceremony."
"Which means nobody would notice someone acting strange." Drake looked thoughtful. "The more I hear about it, the less this theft sounds spontaneous and spur of the moment."
"Somebody had to have planned this days, maybe even weeks or months in advance." Huey nodded.
"And they had help." Gandra agreed. "Somebody to help cover their tracks."
"And magic." Launchpad pointed his corn cob. "The fire didn't go out by itself."
May rabidly wrote everything they said.
Goldie looked off into the distance. "Scrooge told me about the castle. About Webby. Merlock might've taken control of someone else here."
Violet gasped. "Or kidnapped someone and replaced them!"
"So, we have more possibilities and questions, but no answers." Gandra folded her arms. "This is like a never-ending maze!"
"All mazes have an exit." Drake looked at the crowd of people. "We just need to find ours."
"There's Aahdira!" Launchpad pointed out the qual, who was rubbing their head "Hey buddy!"
"Hey guys." They gave the group a tired smile. "Sorry about what happened. Especially to you May. I hope you weren't hurt."
"Oh, I'm good. But do you remember anything?"
They shook their head. "Honestly, a lot of it's a blur. The past few days too, I've been up pretty late working out the logistics. I can't even remember what I had for breakfast this morning."
Gandra activated her eye buds. "I'm only picking up a few bruises and some fatigue. Nothing to worry about, but you should probably take a nap."
"Now you're sounding like my sister. I just can't imagine anyone here doing this, Granny's freaking out but she's trying to keep everyone calm. I thought a walk would clear my head-"
"Don't you worry." Launchpad gave a reassuring smile. "You've got the best adventure family investigating!"
"Thank you, really. I've got to check to see if we have enough food in case we're here a while. Good luck!"
"Well, they seem flustered." Goldie said as Twyla weaved through her legs. "Seriously, we need to get a lease for this thing."
"We should keep an eye on them Hubert." Violet gave him a knowing look. "Both to help them organize the supplies and to see if they do anything suspicious."
"Great idea!" Huey pulled out his calculator and he and Violet raved after Aahdira. "We'll catch up later!"
"Aww...." Goldie cooed. "Little casanova can't tell its flirting when it's happening to him."
"It's very cute." Drake nodded. "But we can deal with that later."
May made a quick mental note to discuss 'Operation: Huelet' with her cousins and sister later. "So....we still don't have any solid leads."
"Nope!" Launchpad moved around as Twyla climbed onto his shoulders. Moving his arms as she walked on them. "But we made a lot of friends!"
May ripped an empty age from her notebook and tore it into shreds.
"Easy kid." Gandra said. "We still have a lot of ground to cover. I think Fenton said he was going with some of the others to search the woods."
"The woods! That's it! I'll go check in with them while you look for anything suspicious!"
She was well on her way when she found herself lifted off the ground again.
"Easy susnshine." Goldie stepped in front of her. "Thank you himbo."
Launchpad gently put May on the ground and went to rejoin Drake and Gandra. Twyla jumped off him and sat next to May.
"Mow what's going on? You're more wound up than a miner when they realized their canary just died."
"I'm fine, just busy investigating! Now if you'll excuse me-"
"Scrooge called me and said he was worried about you."
May froze, shaking her head. "Well, you can tell him I'm fine and perfectly capable of solving this on my own!"
"Too bad you're not solving this on your own." Goldie sighed. "Kid; I get it; you're used to doing things your own way but right now there's too much ground to cover for one person. Especially if that one person can barely reach the kitchen counter."
"I'm trained in several martial arts styles and aced my espionage classes. I can handle this!" Why wouldn't anyone listen to her!? Before Goldie could get out another word, she ran around, flipping over a cart of vegetables before running off, Twyla struggling to keep up.
"Well, we know who inherited his stubbornness..."
"Is she gonna be ok?" Drake asked, pointing after where May went.
"I hope so, but she strikes me as the kind of person who doesn't look around her until she realizes she's in way over her head."
Chapter 6
Summary:
Happy 4th of July!
Chapter Text
"Okay Twyla," May spoke as she walked ignoring the odd looks people were giving her. "I know the first three scenes were a bust, but I'm sure we'll find something concrete soon!"
Twyla just meowed as she walked alongside the duckling.
"Exactly! I don't need a team. I just have to find all the pieces and put them together until the puzzle is complete!"
Another meow.
"Okay...they others were useful in giving me a starting off point...and a lead but I know I can figure out the rest myself. I just need to focus, pay attention to my surroundings and-ah!"
She found herself on the ground after colliding with Della.
"Hey kiddo!" Della grinned and helped May to her feet. "Gotta be careful, lots of people around. You ok?"
"I'm...fine Aunt Della." May wiped off her dress and prepared to take off-
"Where are you off to in such a hurry?"
"Mom!" May jumped and turned to her mother. "What are you doing here?"
"We were just talking to the stand owners to see if they-oh, there's Amber! Let's see if she knows anything."
May just held in a sigh as she followed them to the titmouse running a jewelry stand. As frustrated as she was at getting interrupted again, she might learn something from the stand owners.
"Daisy!" Amber smiled. "How are you? I saw the ceremony and-oh, you're her!"
"Amber, this is my daughter May." Daisy gently brought her daughter forward.
"It's nice to meet you. I'm so sorry your ceremony got interrupted. Hopefully, the Dreamcatcher will be found soon."
"That's what we wanted to talk to you about." Della said. "I'm Della Duck, by the way, Daisy's future sister-in-law."
"Nice to meet you. But if you're going to ask about if I saw anything, I'm sorry." She shook her head sadly. "I was near the back of the hall and trying to help my sister calm my niece down."
"What about before or after? Did you notice anything strange?"
"Or notice anyone behaving oddly?" Daisy tagged on.
Amber looked thoughtful. "Well...I was a bit busy getting my goods ready, I took some I had in my store and made a couple of new pieces. Aahdira came to check on me, they're helping their grandmother with the preparations since they're the next chief and all."
"Wait..." May looked at her, surprised. "Aahdira's the next chief?"
"That's right. Their mother was supposed to be the next Chieftess but she died when they and their sister were kids, so they went to live with their grandmother."
"Yeah...I remember that." Della ran a finger over her amulet. Daisy gently held her other hand.
It was then that the full impact of the story hit May. It was eerily similar to her father's story...just older, and without the evil wizard. "It must've been hard for both of them."
"It was." Amber's eyes turned hard. "Especially since their father pretty much gave up pretending to care after that. So it's been pretty much just the three of them, then Anpao married her wife and had the kids, they all still live together.
But yeah, there's still the pressure for Aahdira to become Chief after Citalli, especially now that she's getting on in years, I think it's starting to get to them. They seemed fine when they invited me to set up a stand but when they checked in a week ago, they seemed a little out of it. I'm worried that what happened today is just going to make it worse, I tried talking to them earlier and they were just whispering to themselves, nearly had a heart attack when I grabbed their attention.
As for Anpao, she's been trying to help them, but she got her own job at the cultural museum, the kids, and her responsibilities setting this up. She's trying to act like everything's fine but I think it's getting to her too.
As for anything else, I'm sorry, I was busy setting up and running the stand."
"Thanks anyway." Daisy sighed.
"Well so much for that." Della groaned as they walked along the stands.
"Hey!" They saw Webby, Gus, Matilda, and Gladstone walking over.
"Did you find anything?" Webby asked eagerly. "Gus and I just got back from the kitchens, they gave us snacks but they couldn't tell us anything, especially since they kicked us out after Gus ate an entire pot of stew.
"Sorry." Gus shrugged. "It was delicious stew though."
"And we just left the weaving hut." Gladstone shrugged. "I got a beautifully woven rug for being the millionth person to visit but no information."
"I did buy a rug for Ludwig's office and got to weave myself a nice basket." Matilda smiled. "Something to brighten up the room."
"Maybe some of the other stand owners know something?" Webby looked around. "Maybe - Oh! That one's selling handmade knives! And that one has little statues! Do you think Lena would like a raven or a cat?"
"I think she'd like it if you stayed focused." May said icily.
"Maybe..." Matilda eyed May while patting a dejected Webby's head. "We can look around once this is all sorted."
"Do you think they have daggers?" Della looked at the stall. "Penny's been thinking about trying her hand at them."
"I think," Gus patted his stomach, eyeing a backed goods stall. "That we all need a snack break."
"I hear that." Gladstone pulled out some cash. "Found a twenty the way here."
'What is wrong with you people!?" May shouted. "We can't stop until we find the Dreamcatcher and calm the spirits down!"
"May Downey Duck!" Daisy crossed her arms. "We don't shout at family like that. We've all been walking around and talking to people for hours, a little break might be what we need."
"You wanna try the weaving tent?" Gladstone offered. "They're offering lessons."
"What I want is to check in with the final group and see if they found anything useful!" May picked up Twyla and ran off before anyone could stop her.
Daisy took a breath and ran her fingers through her hair. "I don't know what in the world is going on with her..."
"She's probably just hangry." Gus shrugged. "I get pretty upset when I haven't eaten in a while.
Matilda clicked her tongue. 'That girl's got the McDuck temper alright. Still hasn't learned to focus it yet."
"I'll let Donald know." Della pulled out her phone and began to text her brother. "If there's anyone who knows how to deal with an angry McDuck, it's him."
"Didn't he stop talking to Scrooge for a decade?" Gus asked.
Della winced as Gladstone elbowed his cousin. "Maybe...but he's her dad! I'm sure it'll be better this time!"
"This is getting me nowhere!" May huffed as she carried Twyla through the woods. "It's dead end after dead end!"
"Meow."
"There are clues but they could point to anyone on the suspect list. And all anyone seems to care about is my attitude!"
"Meow!"
"Well, I'm sorry I want to return a vital piece of my family's history. And i"m sorry that the only family member without magic is the only one taking this seriously. Now if I could just ind-"
"Hi May!"
May grabbed a branch and pointed it at-
"Dewey!?"
"Hi?" Dewey gave a nervous smile as he held up his hands. "Sorry I scared you, can you please not kill me?"
"Warned ya she wasn't going to like it." Gosalyn stepped out of a bush. "Also do all of you talk to that cat?"
"It helps get the ideas flowing!"
May sighed, threw aside the stick, and gently put Twyla on the ground. "Where are the others?"
Gosalyn pointed her thumb behind her. "Right this way Ms. Sunshine."
They found the adults in a clearing next to the lake with a fire pit and several stump seats set up.
"Did any of you find anything?" She asked and braced herself.
Donald grinned. "We did actually!"
"Really!?" Now this was news!
"Abner and Anpao agreed to teach me some tracking techniques." Penny checked the ground. "How to distinguish different types of footprints...and we found some leading from the Hall and into the forest."
"They must've tried to make a run for it." Anpao looked over to the wall. "But it looks like the spirits put a stop to that. The footprints turn round and fade away back to the reserve.
"We also found some delightful plant specimens!" Fethry chipped in happily as he and Fenton collected samples.
"We tried to see if they hid it out here." Dewey's shoulders sagged. "But so far nothing!"
May was writing so fast, that Donald wondered how the writing would even be legible. "Any idea of who the footprints belong to?"
"Someone Anpao's height and weight." Abner grunted, eyeing the woman. "Her footprints were nearly a complete match."
Anpao frowned. "You don't think I had something to do with this, do you?"
"Just trying to keep the facts straight!" Fenton grinned nervously. "Did you notice anyone coming in from the woods just before the wall came up?"
"No." Anpao ran a hand down her face. "I was helping my wife try and calm our kids down. You can ask her if you want."
"Are you ok?" Donald asked the dejected woman.
"Just...tired. From the kids and helping Granny and Aahdira getting everything ready. But I shouldn't be complaining, Aahdira's even more tired than me, Granny's hard on them because they're the next Chief. They've been like a zombie the past few days and I thought they could finally relax after...well, so much for that."
"They seemed fine when they asked me to build a new podium." Abner shrugged.
"Suffering isn't a competition." Fenton said gently. "If you think the Chiefess is being too tough, you have to talk to her."
"Trying to talk to her is like fighting a mountain lion with a toothpick."
"Speaking of fighting," Gosalyn leaned over to May. "Penny showed me a Dewey some cool moves while we were out walking. You wanna train with us later?"
"Can we focus, please?" May could feel her teeth cracking from the pressure. "So we know they tried to make a run for it, realized they couldn't, and came back."
Fethry eyed her oddly. "We didn't find it in any of the trees or any recently upturned dirt."
"I don't think they threw it in the lake." Dewey tipped a toe in. "Aqua would've tossed it back up.
May twisted her charm bracelet excitedly. "So it must be somewhere in the reserve!"
"Or another part of the woods we haven't checked." Fenton sighed. "That's a large area to cover."
None of the search teams reported anything unusual." Penny added.
May sighed. "Better than what the others had at least..."
"May, come sit." Donald patted the stump next to him. "Your mom called me a little while ago."
She cringed. "She did? Look, I'll apologize later but-"
"I don't want you to apologize unless you mean it. What I really want to know is what's going on.":
"What's going on is that I have been walking around the grounds the whole day and haven't found the dreamcatcher yet!"
"Sometimes these things take time." He explained gently. "This is a weird case and all of us are struggling to put all the pieces together. But why are you so insistent on finding it by yourself?"
May folded her arms and looked away. "You wouldn't understand."
"I think I would if you'd just try to explain it to me."
May clutched her notebook tight. "I-"
Donald's phone pinged. "It's Uncle Scrooge! He says he wants everyone back at the picnic area to recon."
"Good luck!" Anpao wiped themselves off. "I have to check with my kids."
Donald smiled at his daughter. "We'll talk after this, ok?"
May looked at her notebook and sighed.
Maybe she would figure it out at recon...
Everyone gathered at the picnic tables, which were moved in a circle.
"Alright everyone; report!" Scrooge demanded. "Lena's still keeping watch over the hall and so far, she hasn't reported anything strange. Ludwig, Beakley, has yer team found anything?"
"Most of our research was focused on the wall and the spirit's activities." Ludwig explained. "The wall is made of solid rock, no way to get through it unless you have construction equipment and even then, I'd think Gaia wouldn't like it!"
"The air spirit also appears to be keeping anyone from trying to climb or fly over the wall." Beakley continued. "Likewise, it appears the water spirit is keeping anyone from using the river, so right now we're all trapped in the forest."
"Meaning the thief is likely trapped too." Gyro paused. "Unless they have a means of teleportation, which just occurred to me now."
Scrooge ran a hand down his face. "For the sake of our sanity after all the work we put in, let's say the thief and dreamcatcher are still in the area. Goldie and Drake?"
"Must've torn the village upside down." Goldie shrugged. "Every bag, purse, basket, or crate, I've got nothing."
"Talking to people didn't yield anything solid," Drake said. "It was too dark for most of them to see anything and no one could recall if anyone near them moved during that time.
"I really wish I'd brought to bring-" Fenton paused. "-A way to contact Gizmoduck! I'd bet with his scanners and jets we'd have a better way of tracking down the thief!"
Drake scoffed. "That hack? I'd doubt he'd find his way out of a paper bag."
Gandra rolled her eyes before leaning over to her boyfriend. "We really need to tell him one of these days..."
"Tell me what?"
Gosalyn just patted his shoulder. "Just save us all a headache and let it go for now."
"We also think the thief planned this out." Launchpad continued. "And they had help. They covered their tracks too good for it to be a last-minute thing."
"None of the stall owners noticed anything either." Daisy reported. "Most of them were too busy getting their wares ready to notice anyone behaving oddly."
Scrooge cleaned his glasses, careful not to break the glass. "And the last team?"
Penny stood up proudly. "We located footprints leading from the hall into the woods."
"That's awesome!" Della grinned. "Did you find out who made them?"
"Nope!" Fethry shook his head, smiling. "There wasn't enough mud, but we know they started to head off into the woods, only to turn back towards the reserve."
"Anpao was there." Donald said. "And they nearly matched hers, so we think whoever it is, is about her size and weight..." He looked at his foot. "If not just her or her sibling."
"Excellent!" Scrooge rubbed his hands. "So, it looks like the thief, or one of them, tried to make a break for it, only to turn back when the spirits trapped everyone inside. And we now have a vague idea of what one of the thieves looks like."
"If not a suspect already." Matilda nodded. "Anpao's looking pretty suspicious."
"You can't really think it was her?" Elvira demanded. "She loves her community. What reason would she have to steal it anyway?"
"That's what we'd like to know." Scrooge sighed. "And it's why I didn't invite the Chieftess to this meeting, especially when we were already considering her grandchildren. But we still need evidence before we confront her."
"Uh, May/" June eyed her sister, who was grinning like a maniac. "Are you ok?"
"I'm better than ok! I just have to find some decisive evidence against Anpao!"
"Are you sure? She seemed really nice-"
"Just because she seems nice doesn't mean she is nice. And where were you the whole day?"
"Me and grandma were performing a few protection spells to keep any bad spirits out."
May rolled her eyes. "So, we were running around doing all the work while you just waved flowers around?"
"It's more complicated than that!"
"What's going on?" Donald demanded, stepping over to his daughters.
"I was just telling June that I'm going to trail Anpao until I find evidence against her." May jumped out of her seat, only for Donald to hold out a hand to stop her.
"Oh no you're not."
"Why!?"
"She could be dangerous! We don't know who she's working with or what kind of magic they can do."
"I don't need magic to face her!"
Everyone was now looking at the standoff between the father and daughter duo.
"Should we be here?" Gyro whispered to Gandra. "I feel like this should be a private moment."
"I'm not saying that." Donald said slowly. "I'm just saying we need a solid plan first. Maybe you could go with June or Lena-"
"I DON"T NEED THEIR STUPID MAGIC!"
It took three seconds for her to process what she just said. Her anger was pushed aside, replaced by lightheadedness, tears building up behind her eyes, and the sensation that a million eyes were on her.
Donald blinked, stunned. "May-"
She turned, jumping off the table and making a break for it.
"MAY!"
"W-Why would she say that?" June said in a whispery voice, eyes sparkling.
"Magic envy." Violet stated. "Those who are around people who possess magical abilities often desire magic themselves or strive to prove that they are just as capable without it."
Huey blinked. "She was...envious of our magic?"
"That would explain her attitude before." Daisy stood up. "I should've talked to her earlier. I'll go look for her."
"No." Donald shook his head. "Let me. We were talking earlier, and I should've just stayed back with her."
"No." Scrooge tapped his cane. "I'll go look for the lass, you all stay here and plan our next course of action."
"Uncle Scrooge," Donald took a deep breath. "She's stubborn, and she doesn't like talking about her feelings."
"That seems to be the standard for this family."
"Just...be gentle with her. Please."
The old man's gaze softened. "I will lad."
After a little asking, Scrooge found May sitting by the lakeside, head in her knees and Twyla curled up in her lap. Her notebook had been tossed at the water's edge.
She didn't look up. "I didn't mean it."
"Ah figured ye didn't."
Apparently, she wasn't expecting his voice as she looked at him in surprise. "Uncle Scrooge?"
"Ah've let my temper get the better of me too many times to count, saying things I wish I could take back." He pointed to a spot next to her. "May I?"
She shrugged and he took a seat.
"Ye want ta know why I always had a stance against magic?"
May looked at him.
"It's because I saw it as a cheap trick and shortcut to hard work. Why bother getting a job when, theoretically, you could snap your fingers and have a pile of gold or a feast laid before you, when all ya did was be born to the right bloodline? And those who find magic through other means seem to use it to laze about life, never bothering to use their powers to help people or realize there's a cost to such power.
Now, the past few weeks have changed a lot of those viewpoints; I see yer daddy and the rest of them working hard, practicing, and using their powers to help people. We may not know why they have such power yet, but it's not a way for them to cheat at life. It may make life a little easier in the long run sure, but they're putting in the work to learn to utilize it in practical ways.
And I'm still scared. That eventually there will be a price to pay. A price that was agreed upon before any of them were born and that they didn't have any say in. But I know they'll keep fighting, no matter the stakes."
"That first part makes a lot of sense." May nodded. "And I don't think I've ever seen Louie work so hard at something, besides Louie Inc."
That got a chuckle. "Aye, that lad's really shaping up." He picked up a nearby wildflower. "May, why do ya want to find the dreamcatcher so badly?"
She held her necklace tight. "I...I just wanted to find it myself. To show everyone..."
He leaned in slightly. "To show everyone what?"
"...That I'm just as special as everyone else."
He blinked. "What do ya mean?"
"Back at F.O.W.L., I was the better fighter, the better strategist, the one who passed the obstacle courses first." The memory of her time there was painful, but she had to continue. "I knew I was a 'failure' to them in the way that mattered most, so I thought if I was the best in all the other things that....they would be proud of me. And they would keep me and June around."
"Oh lass...."
"It was stupid, I know. It was never going to happen. But then we came here and, everyone else was the best at something but we were equal, in a sense. We knew where we all stood."
"And now that's changed."
She looked at her necklace, the one that was supposed to symbolize her place in the family. "At the rehearsal...all the other kids were so impressed with their magic, even June's! They acted like they were so cool, and then they started asking me about my magic..." She hugged Twyla close, letting the steady purring keep her calm. "But I don't have any! Even June is more magical than me.
Suddenly, it was like there was this wall keeping me away from the rest of them. It was like...I wasn't really a part of the family anymore.
And then the Dreamcatcher went missing and I thought if I could find it myself, that would show everyone that I'm special too; that I deserve to be a part of this family."
Her shoulder shook, and he wrapped an arm around them and pulled her close.
"How come I don't have magic? How come everyone else gets it an I....is there something wrong with me?"
"May, there is absolutely nothing wrong with you." He said firmly. "Why didn't you tell us any of this sooner?"
"I think she tried."
They turned and found Elvira and The Chieftess watching a few feet away. Elvira's face was downcast while Citali seemed stunned.
Elvira walked slowly. "That's why you asked to help with the ritual, isn't it?"
Burying her head against her uncle's chest, she nodded. "I thought..it was dumb. And everyone else was so busy getting ready...it wasn't important."
"Of course it's important!" Elvira insisted, taking a seat next to her. "You're family, magic or no magic. You're just as special as anyone in this family."
"Yeah right."
"May Duck." Scrooge said in a stern tone. "Yer mother and Aunt donnae have magic, are they part of this family?"
"Of course but-"
"And I donnae have any magic either. Nor does Beakley, Goldie, Matilda, Ludwig, or Launchpad. Magic does not make a family lass."
Elvira took her hand. "Love does. And we are so proud of you."
"I don't know why you don't have magic." Scrooge shrugged. "Or if you ever will, but you do NOT have to prove that you belong here. Ye already earned yer place in it, yer not losing it that easily."
Twyla meowed in agreement.
Elvira used the edge of her shawl to wipe May's tears. "I'm sorry if what I said at the rehearsal hurt you. I thought I was giving you a break since you've already done so much already."
"Thank you." May smiled softly. "I'm sorry, for being a jerk all day."
"Ah don't it's us ye have to apologize to."
She sighed. "You're right."
Elvira helped May up, before grabbing the notebook and handing it back to her granddaughter. "It looks like you took a lot of notes. Do you mind sharing with the others, they might give us a better idea of what to do next."
"I will, but I don't think they'll help."
"You never know."
As they started away from the lake, May noticed the Chieftess was still standing there, looking out over the lake thoughtfully. "Hold on." Slowly, she walked over. "Are you ok?"
Chieftess Citali nodded. "I'm just...thinking. About a lot of things. About how I spend so much time worrying about the future that I forget about what's right in front of me."
May's eyes widened as her brain as the final piece of the puzzle snapped into place.
"'Right in front of me'...."
Citali looked at her oddly. "Are you alright?"
"Right in front of me!" She flipped through her notebook. "How could I have missed it!?"
"May," Elvira asked with concern. "What are you talking about?"
"We need to gather everyone at the Dance Hall right away!"
"Why?"
She looked at them with a confident smile. "Because I know where the dreamcatcher is!"
Chapter 7: UPDATE
Chapter Text
My mother just passed away.
She's been sick for a while, that's why the postings have been a little chaotic.
I have some of the last chapter written but....it may be a while.
I just wanted to let you know.
Chapter Text
May looked out into the crowd of people, each seated where they had been that morning, aside from her family, who were gathered on the side of the hall. They all looked incredibly confused.
All except for Elvira and Scrooge, who looked at her proudly.
Taking a deep breath, she stepped forward.
"Attention Everyone!"
The hall was silenced as everyone focused on her.
"Throughout the day my family and I have searched for every possible clue to the Dreamcatcher's thief. No person unquestioned and no stone unturned." She turned to her family and smiled at them. "First off, I just want to say I really couldn't have done this without any of them and the clues they picked up.
Second, I know who took the Demon Dreamcatcher."
A chorus of gasps. To the other side of the stage, she could see Chieftess Citali's mouth drop.
"She does!?" Dewey exclaimed, earning an elbow to the gut from Webby.
"I do." She walked to her place on stage. "First; let's set the scene. Aadhira, Anpao, can you come up here? Thanks, now stand where you were when the Dreamcatcher appeared. Perfect!"
"What's this about?" Anpao asked.
"Just helping everyone visualize. So. I'm called on stage. Anpao is holding a basket and Aadhira is holding the dreamcatcher." She gestured to the bird in front of her. "Then, BAM! The lights go out! Everyone panics, someone is running across the stage and POW!" She fell backwards. "Someone knocks me and Aadhira to the floor, stealing the Dreamcatcher. There are no cell phones allowed so no one can record anything. The lights come on, nobody is missing, the altar is a wreck, and the Dreamcatcher is gone."
"That's how it went." Chieftess Citali nodded, climbing on stage. "I don't see how anyone could've taken the Dreamcatcher out of the hall and return in all that chaos."
May smirked. "That's because...they didn't."
Citali frowned. "Are you saying...?"
"That's right; the Demon Dreamcatcher is still in this hall!"
The audience burst into excited murmuring.
"In fact, it never left at all!"
"The suspense is overwhelming!" Ludwig said giddily.
"The first thing to note; is that this wasn't some last-minute scheme. It was planned well in advance, taking into account the hall size, the number of guests and yes, even the return of the spirits, though I doubt they considered how the spirits would react to the artifact going missing; that was their first mistake.
Going back, they also couldn't have done this alone; this is the effort of a team of at least two. One to perform the magic, and the other to take the Dreamcatcher.
The first piece came when we were searching the hall; there are no windows and even with the sun starting to rise; people would notice someone using the exits, so there's no way they could've removed the Dreamcatcher in the short time the lights were out."
"So it's still in the hall." Citali nodded. "Is there a basket we missed?"
"Actually, it never even left the stage!"
"Ooh, plot twist!" Gosalyn pumped her fists.
"But we searched the whole stage!" Scrooge exclaimed. "We didn't find anything; no trap doors, footprints, or loose floorboards!"
"That's because we were so busy looking at the stage itself, we didn't look closely at what was on the stage." May walked towards the altar and lifted the cloth, revealing a freshly made stand. "Abner, you said you made this for the ceremony?"
Abner frowned, finally catching on to what May was hinting at. "Yeah...I thought you already checked it!"
"We didn't know about it. So can you tell me?"
"There's a button underneath the top near the front."
After a bit of searching, May found said button blended into the work and pressed it.
A secret compartment popped open.
And there, hanging on a nail, was the Demon Dreamcatcher.
"By the spirits!" Chieftess CItali gasped.
"It was there the whole time!?" Lena shouted. "I was here all day!"
"Precisely. The thief realized that we thought that Dreamcatcher had been taken out of the Hall we'd leave the crime scene alone, giving them a chance to sneak back in and reclaim it. Now Abner, who did you say ordered the new podium?"
His eyes bore into the figure on stage. "Aadhira."
Shocked gasps and whispers filled the air as Chieftess Citali and Anpao turned to their relative.
"This cannot be true!" Citali shook her head.
"Tell me you didn't do this." Anpao demanded, shaking. "Aadhira tell me!"
But Aadhira wasn't looking at either of them. They were staring off blankly into the distance.
"Aahdira?" Citali's voice wavered.
"When the lights went out," May continued, marching up to Aadhira. "Aadhira ran over to the altar and threw up the cloth so they could access the secret panel, that's why it was a mess. Then they knocked me back and stole the Dreamcatcher. The first 'Thump' I heard was them opening the secret compartment. Then they threw themselves to the floor to make it look like they were attacked too.
You and your partner planned to take off with the Dreamcatcher after we gave up on the hall, or to hide it out in the woods in case Abner told someone about the compartment but the spirits keeping everyone from leaving ruined that. People were combing the woods and now neither of you had anywhere to go."
"But WHY!?" Anpao demanded. "This doesn't sound like them at all!"
"You're right." May nodded. "Aadhira did it...but not because they chose to.
One of the most common things I kept hearing was how Aadhira was stressed and tired over the past few days. Everyone chalked that up to the stress of getting everything ready...but what if it was something else? What if they were trying to fight off a curse?"
Elvira gasped. "You don't mean?"
"I do. They're being controlled. With magic."
"No..." Citali whispered and shook her head, looking at her grandchild in horror.
"Hortense can mind control people using her amulet. I've seen it happen. She must've gotten to them a few days ago. Maybe even before then, considering how busy they've been."
"Aadhira!" Anpao grabbed her twin's shoulders and shook them.
"Don't worry, we can help them." May assured her. "Huey and Violet, while you were following Aadhira, did you notice anything off? Did they go to meet with anyone?"
Huey and Violet looked at each other. "We followed them around for a while." He said, glancing around. "They talked to a few of the shopkeepers but everyone else they seemed to brush off. Except..."
"Except for a large black bear." Violet continued. "They met by the food tables before leaving together. We tried to follow but we lost track of them." She narrowed her eyes. "It was as though they had vanished or used a cloaking spell to avoid notice!"
"Wait..." Launchpad gasped. "A black bear? By the food tables!?"
"Yes...?"
Beakley jumped up and pointed. 'Kosumi!"
Sure enough, the elderly bear had been sneaking along the walls towards the exit. They tried to make a run for it, only to find their way blocked by Fenton and Drake.
"Not so fast!" Drake shouted dramatically
"Kosumi?" Citali whispered. "How-?"
"Actually," May interrupted. "I'm willing to bet that that isn't Kosumi at all! After all, someone had to be there to make sure Aahdira was still under control. Isn't that right...Hortense?"
Gasps filled the air as the black bear glowered at the yellow duck.
"...Ah underestimated ya." With a snap of her fingers and a puff of smoke, Hortense McDuck stood in place of the elder.
"You!" Scrooge growled. "I should've known ye try and ruin another family trip!"
"Where's Kosumi!?" Citali demanded. "What have you done with him!?"
"He's fine!" Hortense waved her off. "Ah put a spell on him to make him stay at home and not contact anyone. You can someone to check if ya don't believe me."
"You were also here to keep everyone off of yours and Aahdira's tracks." May continued. "Those footprints in the woods? Fake. I bet you also caused Aahdira to slip up some of the planning, so everyone was too busy and stressed to notice what was really going on."
"Clever lass." She smirked at the girl. "And to think I considered you the child I would have to worry about the least considern' ye don't have an ounce of magic in ya. It's a mistake I won't be making again."
"What did ya want the dreamcatcher for?" Matilda demanded stepping towards her former sister.
"That, quite simply, is for me to know." She grabbed her amulet. "And it looks like I'll be leaving without it anyway. Have a nice ceremony!" There was a flash of light, forcing Drake and Fenton to shield their eyes allowing the transformed hawk to fly away.
"After her!" Scrooge commanded...only for the ground to start shaking!
"Not again!" Huey cried out as Violet and June clung onto him.
"Wait!" Louie pointed. "Look outside! The walls are dropping!"
Indeed, the wall was slowly slipping back below the earth and soon the shaking was over.
"The spirits are calm!" Webby sheered as gale playfully lifted her into the air.
"But she got away!" Della kicked the wall. "Again! Seriously what is up with that!?"
"We can worry about her later." Elvira gently took her shoulders. "Right now, we have to help Aahdira and Kosumi."
"Yes." The Chiefess took the stage. "Everyone, the spirits have calmed down and the dreamcatcher has been found! Given today's events, we will retry the ceremony in the morning. There was trouble today, but we have overcome it! Let us take comfort that no one was seriously hurt and try to rest for tomorrow. In the meantime, please come see me with any concerns."
"And me!" Anpao chimed in, taking her grandmother's arm as they lead everyone out of the hall.
May sat, her mother's arm over her shoulders, as Elvira and June worked on making sure the spell on Aadhira was broken.
"We really are proud of you sweetpea." Daisy kissed her head.
"Ugh..." Aadhira rubbed their head. "What hap-"
Anpao pulled them into a hug. "Welcome home."
"W-What happened? I remember most of it but some parts are...fuzzy." Their eyes widened. "Oh no...I ruined the ceremony didn't I?"
"Of course you didn't!"
"Anpao." Citali approached stoically as her granddaughter stepped aside.
"Granny." Aadhira looked down. "I am so sor-" They paused as Citali pulled them into another hug.
"My little bird." She murmured softly, kissing their cheek. "I would give up that dreamcatcher a hundred times to have you here with us."
"Wha-"
"You've been working so hard to make everything perfect...and I didn't even notice something was wrong with you. I am so sorry."
"They just wanted you to be proud of them." Anpao stated. "They just wanted to show you they would make a good Chief."
"I am proud. Of both of you. I am sorry if I ever made you think otherwise."
May looked up to her father and saw he was smiling too.
Suddenly she found Citali standing before her.
"Chieftess I-"
"Thank you, May." Citali said with a slight bow. "You have saved my grandchild and my friend, and for that, I owe you my eternal gratitude."
Finally, she walked over to Elvira. "Elvira."
Elvira sighed. "I know what-"
"I'm sorry."
Later, Scrooge would tell them that even he had never seen Elvira look so surprised.
"I'm so sorry for treating you so harshly all these years. I understand what happened back then wasn't your fault. And how it must've hurt when your son...I should have been there for you. I should have helped you. But I was so tied to the idea of keeping our traditions intact...I thought those stones were the only reason our tribe had done so well when so many others were moved to reservations, were put in those horrible boarding schools...remember when your own mother wanted to send you to one of those to 'civilize' you? Even at our local school, the teachers scolded us if we used our native tongue, or wore anything related to our 'savage' culture. They barely even mentioned our tribe in the history lessons!
I realized that even if our people were safe in Calisota on paper, the reality was very different. I thought the only reason we were still around was because of those rocks and the spirits! Then they were gone...I did everything I could to make sure our traditions would continue. I was afraid that our culture was hanging on by a thread.
But seeing your family, your granddaughter work so hard to help...I realized it wasn't the magic or the traditions keeping us together. It was our people, looking out for one another, accepting each other as we are. And...I'm sorry that I haven't been doing that."
Elvira wiped her eyes and pulled her cousin into a hug. "You've been so strong for so long. You've done so much to keep our culture alive and everyone knows it. I always admired how you refused to let anyone intimidate you into stepping down, like when you advocated getting our tribe mentioned more in history classes, and keeping our tribe a recognized nation in Calisota, inviting all those scholars to record our practices...you're the reason our people are so proud of who we are. Everyone can feel the love you have for our history and it inspires them."
Citali held her tight, tears sliding down her face. 'Thank you. For everything." She looked over at Scrooge. "And Scrooge...I'm so sorry too. None of this was your fault either. Thank you for supporting Elvira and her family when I wouldn't. You are a blessing to our people."
"It was my honor." He tipped his hat. "But if anyone's a blessing here, it's our family."
The next morning at dawn, Citali took the stage again.
"Everyone! I want to welcome you all again to this year's ceremony! Yesterday evil forces angered the spirits and tried to steal our history. However..." She smiled and gestured for May to step forward. "Thanks to this young lady, the spirits were calmed and our people are safe once more!"
There was a round of applause, but the loudest cheering came from her family.
"That's my baby!" Donald wiped a tear.
June bounced on her feet. "That's my sister!"
Scrooge and Elvira gave her proud smiles.
May felt like she had just climbed Mount Neverrest. But more importantly...she felt the love of her family.
No, she had felt it before...but now she was finally letting it in without suspicion and doubt.
"And it is thanks to her that Aadhira and Kosumi are here with us, safe and sound in mind and body! And now without further ado..." She gave her grandchild a wide smile and stepped aside.
"Thanks again kid." Aadhira whispered as they held out the dreamcatcher. "It feels like I'm finally myself for the first time in a week."
May grinned back and repeated the words. Huh...didn't the dreamcatcher have more feathers before? Maybe a few came off while it was being moved.
Later, as the final child took the oat, Chieftess Citali took the stage. "Let us welcome our new members on this next phase of their journey!" Another round of applause. "Now before we commence with the feast and celebrations, I have a final announcement to make. There will be a solar eclipse in several weeks, if you are available, we will be having a special, smaller ceremony for this once-in-a-lifetime event. It will be to commemorate the joining of the Lord and Lady...and mark the coming of a new Chief."
The hall erupted with gasps and murmuring. Elvira's jaw dropped open. Even Aadhira and Anpao looked shocked.
"Yes, I will officially be stepping down as Chieftess on the day of the eclipse. I am honored to serve so many years, but the time has come for my grandchild to take their place." She smiled warmly. "I know they are ready, I have seen their hard work, determination, and love of their people, as have all of you. I know they will bring pride to our ancestors and ensure our history and traditions continue on for generations to come!"
People clapped and cheered as Aadhira bashfully made their way to their Grandmother's side, though May noted they were smiling proudly. Anpao likewise gave them a crushing hug.
"I'm happy for them. They've earned it."
"And Citali's earned her retirement." Elvira held May's hand as they headed for the celebration breakfast. "It's about time she let herself relax."
"Way to go kids!" Gladstone gave each of them a high five.
"You all look so grown up already!" Donna smiled, hugging her nieces.
"You were all spectacular!" Fethry grinned as he led them to their tables. "Like coral coming into bloom!"
"Good job!" Gus said through a mouthful of food.
As they ate, May couldn't push aside the nagging feeling at the back of her mind.
"What's wrong kid?" Gandra asked. "You look like you're trying to find an error in your program code."
"I keep thinking about yesterday. There was something about the way Hortense just...left. It felt too...easy."
The tables went quiet as glances were shared.
"Ah agree lass." Scrooge nodded solemnly. "She left without too much trouble; that's not like her at all. Either she was just in a good mood-"
"-or she already got what she was after." Goldie sighed and took a sip of apple juice.
"But we still have the dreamcatcher!" Dewey protested. "Grandma made sure it was the real deal and everything!"
"It could have been a distraction." Beakley concluded. "To cover what she was really doing."
"Great..." Louie rested his head on his hand. "Another mystery."
"Let's not let her ruin today." Matilda said. "There's not much we can do about it. Besides, today is about celebrating the bairns. Right now," Matilda raised her cup. "we're here to look forward to what they'll accomplish down the line."
The adults all raised their cups.
"To our kids!" Scrooge smiled. "May they continue to bring honor and pride to our family with whatever gifts and skills they have!"
And so the rest of the days was full of feasting (Gus won the eating contest. June came in second while Gyro wretched after discovering a cooked tarantula), games (Gosalyn won the junior archery contest while Donald got an arrow through his hat, courtesy of a very apologetic Fenton), and crafts (May made a necklace for her mother while Dewey made something resembling an old boot. Della loved it anyway).
In spite of all the troubles to get there, it truly was a day to remember.
Lena cranked open her eye and check the time: two in the morning. Good. Glancing over to her sister and making sure she was asleep, Lena gently snuck out of the tent.
Looking around, she silently made her way over to the barn, closing the doors behind her.
"You said nobody would be hurt!"
"And they weren't." A calm voice replied. Lena turned and saw a raven fly down from the rafters and transform back into a duck. "I will admit, things got a little out of hand with the spirits, but Kosumi and Aadhira are fine."
"I guess..."
"I apologize if Hortense was a bit harsh, but we needed her aid. And with her there, nobody realized you were the one who turned out the lights.
"And it sounds like everyone had a good time in the end, didn't they? May got to help prove she was part of the family, the children got to participate in an important tradition and Elvira and Citali reconciled."
Lena looked at the floor and sighed. "You're right."
"See? Sometimes you need to shake things up before good things can happen. Now," His eyes brightened. "Did you get the feathers?"
Lena twisted her hand, revealing three rainbow-colored feathers. "Nabbed them from the dreamcatcher while everyone was gone. I don't think anyone even noticed."
"Well done!" He eagerly looked them over. "The Great Raven doesn't give his feathers to just anyone. You've done me a great favor my dear."
The pride she felt was only dampened by the guilt of tricking her friends. "But it doesn't affect the dreamcatcher right?"
"Of course not. The Great Raven gave Tawa more than enough feathers."
"And you're going to use it for-?"
"As I told you; it's a surprise." Poe smiled and crossed his shoulder, revealing a purple 'x'. "And I gave you my word that I wouldn't use it to hurt anyone. Promises can be binding in the magical world Lena."
"All right. But next time you ask me to get you something, just try to do it without the overly complicated scheme."
"Of course. Until next time my dear Lena."
"See ya Uncle Poe."
"Everything is nearly ready." The woman said. "We just need to wait for them to come home."
Her partner looked up from his latest gizmo with glee. "Excellent! And I just so happened to finish the project. I say this calls for a celebratory muffin!"
He reached for a nearby basket while the woman rolled her eyes. "You never need an excuse to gorge yourself on muffins. And don't celebrate yet; ever hear the phrase: 'don't count your chickens until they hatch'?"
He bit down on a muffin. "Must you be such a downer?"
"I'm being practical!"
"And that's why we make such a good team; you focus on the boring 'practical' stuff while I focus on the whimsically, mad machinations!"
"Remind me why I broke you out of jail again?"
"Because you know you couldn't do this alone. You needed someone wild and unpredictable and sweetheart you got him!"
"Don't call me 'sweetheart'. And watch that overconfidence Mads; it's how he got you last time."
The scientist smiled, but it wasn't his usual maniacal, unhinged smile; this smile was cold and sinister. He twirled a piece of his lavender hair around his finger.
"Rosie, I know all too well what Duck Avenger is capable of. I've had over a decade to go over where I went wrong last time. A decade of analyzing his movements, way of thinking, his behavior. "
He picked up a ray gun, pushing the trigger just hard enough to get it to spark.
"And now it's time to show Duck Avenger what the Mad Ducktor is capable of."
Notes:
Sorry about the wait and thank you for your understanding. This story in particular was difficult for me to write for a variety of reasons though the biggest was caring for my dying mother combined with writer's block, helping my family, and my ongoing depression (and getting sucked into another old fandom). I'm touched that my writing has inspired and captured the attention of so many people.
See you next time for 'Return of the Duck Avenger!'.
