“I’m jus’ disappointed.” The Irishman sighed, shaking his head as he unlocked the front door.
Uhtred and Sihtric exchanged a glance as they followed a step behind him. Uhtred had been the one to ask if something was wrong when he noticed how solemn the man had become on the drive home. “Disappointed?” He repeated.
Sihtric pressed closer to Uhtred’s back. “Was your food bad?”
Finan eased the door open and shook his head. “Nah, the food was fine.” He mumbled as he stepped inside. He left the door open and dropped his keys on the table beside it. He slipped his shoes off and stepped deeper into the house.
Uhtred stumbled inside, Sihtric still pressed close to his back. The two nearly fell and helped to catch each other. Uhtred wrapped his arms around the younger man and Sihtric let out a squeak and pushed him away. Then he quickly shut the door and darted after Finan.
“Fin!” Sihtric slid to a stop on the kitchen tile when Finan stopped and turned towards him. The boy’s eyes widened and he stepped back. “Sorry.” He mumbled.
Finan sighed deeply and shook his head. “Jus’ fergit it. Dinner was nice an’ it was a nice anniversary an’ I love ye both. I’m jus’ tired an’ I’m gonna go t’ bed.”
Uhtred stuck out his bottom lip in a pout as he slunk into the kitchen. He leaned against Sihtric’s back and wrapped his arms around the younger man’s chest as he looked over his shoulder at Finan. “But Fiiiiin!” He strung out the Irishman’s nickname. “It’s our anniversary!”
Finan nodded stiffy as he turned. “Ye two can do whatever ye want.” He mumbled as he walked across the room.
“Finan!” Uhtred pushed away from Sihtric and followed. He felt the younger man a step behind him and both followed their third down the hall. “Hang on a minute! What’s wrong?”
Finan shook his head, brushing it off as he headed for their bedroom. “Nothin’!”
“Something is wrong!” Sihtric said.
Uhtred nodded. “Sweetheart, what is it?”
Finan shook his head again. “It was supid,” He mumbled as he walked towards the bed. He sighed as he sunk down on it. “I’ll jus’ sleep an’ fergit it an’ I’ll be fine tomorrow.”
Uhtred shook his head. “No, no, no. Honey, you can’t just say that!”
“What was stupid?” Sihtric asked as he stepped up beside Uhtred.
Finan leaned back a bit and looked up at them. He glanced from one to the other and back again. Then he looked away and sighed and shook his head. “Jus’... jus’ a stupid idea… I got stuck in me head… somethin’ I thought was gonna ‘appen tonight.” He mumbled under his breath.
Sihtric’s mouth dropped open and he glanced sideways at Uhtred. Then he glared at the man and slapped his shoulder as hard as he could. “I told you he knew!” He snapped, hsi voice low. “You suck at secrets!”
Uhtred glared back at him and rubbed his shoulder. “Well you said he didn’t know so it was fine that we didn’t do it at dinner!”
Sihtric clenched his jaw. “Because you forgot the rings!”
Uhtred’s mouth dropped open and he shook his head. “No I didn’t! You were supposed to bring them!”
“No!” Sihtric shook his head. “You said you would hide them because I thought Finan found them! And I ran late from work! I didn’t even come home! I went straight to the restaurant! I told you on the phone I wasn’t coming home!”
“Oh…” Realization dawned on Uhtred’s face and he nodded his head slowly. “Well… you coulda reminded me to grab them!”
Sihtric rolled his eyes and shook his head. “I tried but you hung up on me!”
“Because Finan came home!” Uhtred snapped, pointing at the stunned looking Irishman on the bed.
“Hang up.” Finan stood up and held up his hands. “What are ye two on ‘bout?”
“Oh cut the shit.” Sihtric said, throwing up his arms. “You know what we’re talking about!” He turned and pushed Uhtred again. “Just go get the rings so we can ask him to marry us!”
Finan turned, watching as Uhtred stumbled across the room. Then he turned and looked back at Sihtric. A smile spread across his face.
“Wait… I can’t remember where I put them…”
