Two is fine, but three is better

Summary:

"Friends forever?" The boy raises his pinky up at their faces, who just stare back at him with confusion.

"What's that?"

"It's a pinky promise! Here!" He excitedly grabs their pinky fingers and intertwines them without the two actually approving it. "We're friends forever now!" And he smiles, radiantly, as if it's an achievement.

They glance at each other, before one defeatedly shakes his head and the other cracks a fond chuckle.

"Yes, friends forever."

One, two, or three
Does it really matter?
Rock, paper, or scissors,
Does it still differ?
Winner, hater, or lover
Are you really one?

"Appa, why do we always move?" The little boy asked. “I hate moving.”

The parents shared a look, then directed to their child who was innocently looking up at them, fiddling with his stuffed rabbit on his lap. One of them sighed, lifting his hand from where it was resting to gently comb through the boy's blonde hair and the child purred at the touch, shyly.

In this matter, the male knew that he was the one to talk. He just didn’t expect it to be brought up out of the blue, like tonight, where he and his husband had their hair decorated with plastic flowers and hairclips.

"It must have been so hard for you, isn’t it?” He tested the water. “We're sorry, we don't want it either.” And continued when the boy stayed silent. “But we have to."

The kid frowned. "Why?"

"Later when you are older, I will tell you."

“But you already said that. I am older now.”

“Not yet, baby.”

He pouted, not buying his dad’s reason. The male only smiled and pulled his child up onto the couch. "But we can promise you, this will be the last time we move.”

"Really?" He nodded. "We never lie to you, do we?" And relief flooded the parents when the frown on the boy's face ceased.

“But,” The other male chimed in. “Why do you hate moving?”

“I just hate it,” The kid shrugged. “I can’t make friends. I can’t stay in contact with them because we move all the time. And my friends are not many, because- well, I’m different.” He said, like it was a matter of fact, like his dads should have known it.

The guilt that infiltrated the parents' hearts in that instant was too gut-wrenching. “We are really sorry, baby.”

“It’s okay.” He smiled. “I love you.”

“We love you too.” The father caressed the boy’s face. "I tell you baby, I'm sure one day there will be people who will like you with all their hearts." He pecked his cheek. “I promise you.”

• • • • • • • • • • • • •

There will be people who will like you with all their hearts

The boy remembers that promise.

But why is he so obsessed with the friend thingy? Was he really mad at his dads just because he couldn’t keep just one friend to himself?

Truthfully, yes and no.

He could never get even slightly upset with his dads, ever, in his entire life so how come the word “mad” could even exist in his dictionary?

He just wants friends. That’s all.

The boy has always wanted friends, who would care about him and whom he could care about. And hearing his classmates chirping about all the amazing things they do with their friends does not help it.

Maybe, there is a probability, a probability that he himself is his own problem. He can kinda see it though.

He knows his love for his stuffed rabbit, his love for his parents, his love for goofy things and his whole being weird people out. In short, just him being him weirds people out.

But he doesn’t want to change that, he loves who he is, his dads love who he is.

So he sighs and prays, praying for whoever it is out there to let him have his own miracle despite the pay. For someone to like him for who he is.

He doesn't expect for his prayer to be heard and for it to send him not one, but two miracles.

And little does he know, the chapters of him and his two miracles just begin.

…….

Chapter Text

Soonyoung put his screwdriver down on the floor, wiping his sweaty forehead, sleeves rolled up and dust stained the outside of his black boots.

"Hannie."

His family moved this morning, and now the clock just ticked 4 in the afternoon, the movers he hired have already left. He was assembling the bookshelf in the living room when he suddenly noticed that the silence accompanying him had been pure silent for too long; it shouldn't be when he had a child, regardless the said child was not in his usual cheer since early.

"Hannie ah!"

No answer, the blonde frowned. Usually it would be followed with a sweet "Yes!" but there was none of that this time. His husband must be in the kitchen unpacking, so he left the living room mess and went looking for him.

"Babe?" He peeked in the kitchen, no. Bedrooms? Nope. The laundry room? No luck. Bathrooms were not counted since they were all locked. Soonyoung decided to check the backyard.

He stepped over the carton boxes lying all over their kitchen. And once the door was open, his features were finally able to soften.

"Jihoon. Hannie ah." He smiled.

His husband, with black hair parted to one side, kneeling on the grass carpet beside a little Jeonghan who was sitting on an old swing left by the former owner of the house. The grass were long and had turned brown at the tip, Soonyoung seriously would need to mow them once their moving was more settled.

"What's wrong?" He raised a brow when they didn't reply. Walking to them, the male noticed their sweet 7 year-old boy was wearing a dour expression, bottom lip pulled out into a big pout. He kneeled beside his partner, looking at him, and Jihoon only shook his head.

"Our baby doesn't like moving, Soon ah." He sighed, hands on the kid's knees. "I found him sitting here and didn't want to go in."

Soonyoung took in what his husband said, and turned to their child. It was a real issue that whenever Jeonghan was upset, nothing except the thing he asked for could flip his frown upside down. He swore that after Jihoon finished, the little one's pout was even more tense.

"Hannie?" Soonyoung attempted, the kid's favourite bunny also lying on the ground, this was serious. "Jeonghan ah."

He tried twice, nothing. The couple shared a concerned look.

"Baby, we understand you don't like moving," Jihoon gently took the child's hands. "At all, I know. And I also know we promised you last time that we would never have to move again. But things happened, and we couldn't stay there longer." He stroked his thumbs over Jeonghan's knuckles. "We're so sorry."

Soonyoung brushed a finger through the boy's silky hair, softly. "It's okay to be upset, you don't have to forgive us right here, we just want you to feel better."

Jeonghan's frown creased a little. “I’m not upset with you Appa.” A gloomy expression replaced the sour one. "I just.."

"Yeah?"

"I just…" he shyly looked up. "..Like our old house more."

A sense of relief sat in both the parent's chest once knowing the real reason for their child’s bother. "Oh."

"It's small, and beautiful, and we can watch the stars together…"

Realization dawned over Soonyoung. Gosh he's such a bad father, how could he miss out on something like that? Jeonghan loved stargazing! it could explain why during the drive he would keep looking back.

"Yeah our old house was beautiful, baby, I like it too. But it doesn't have enough space for you and your Dada."

However, Jeonghan's upset was still apparent. The blonde tried to think of something, good and reasonable, to console him, and when his gaze dashed over the bunny on the ground, a light bulb popped on his head.

"Hannie, you said you wanted a room for Doljong, right?" The child solemnly nodded while his husband raised a confusing brow at him. "We can do it here! There are so many empty rooms! We can even make a BIG rabbit house for him!"

He proposed it in excitement, being nervous that the child wouldn't like it. But seeing the curious look slowly grow on Jeonghan's face instantly eased the worry inside Soonyoung's chest. "Really??"

"Yes! Also here, this swing. You see, it's a bit old right now but we can fix it and make it pretty for both you and your bunny!" Soonyoung picked up the ted on the ground, brushed off some leaves on it and handed it back to Jeonghan. "And how about all of that with a blue sandbox? I can build one for you."

The gloomy expression on the kid's face instantly was nowhere to be found, instead all that's visible were a dazzling grin and lovely brown orbs. "Thank you Appa!" Jeonghan held the bunny in front of his face, excitedly chirped. "Doljong! Appa will make a house for you! And a sandbox for us too!!"

The adults' inside melted at their baby's adorableness. Soonyoung could sense the change of his scent going from bitter to utterly sweet. The male fell back on his bum on the grass, gently bringing the excited Jeonghan with him, fondly cooed at his squishy cheeks. "Aigoo our Hannie. How can you be this cute?"

He pecked on the child's nose and that elicited more giggles from him. Gosh, Jihoon and Soonyoung would do absolutely anything to always have their little one being happy like this.

Jihoon's fond smile became wider as he got up, brushing the dust off his pants. It's so true that he and his husband loved Jeonghan dearly, but it's also a fact that they bickered for the boy's attention quite a lot, like, almost everyday.

Crossing his arms, he hummed. "Hmm, now I wonder who is gonna help me in the kitchen. I’m about to make an apple pie and-"

"Me! Me!" Jeonghan excitedly raised his hand, stumbling to escape Soonyoung's kisses and wrapping his tiny arm around Jihoon's leg. Looking up at him with puppy eyes. "Me, Dada! I love your apple pies!"

The latter huffed at his husband's smirking in victory at him.

"Our baby doesn't love my kisses anymore." He faked a sniff, then added a dramatic cry while pushing himself off the grass. "Hannie loves apple pies more than his Appa's kisses."

Jihoon scooped Jeonghan up in his arms, subtly rolling eyes at his husband's childish complaints. "Appa, Hannie loves your kisses too." Always trust their child to be the sweetest angel ever. "But Hannie also loves apple pies, let's eat together, Appa."

He stretched his arms to reach for Soonyoung, but with his small size it was like a kitten trying to reach the top of a drawer. The adults let out hearty chuckles, the blonde put his arms out for the boy for him to be able to grab onto his index finger. "Yes, let's eat together baby."

While Jeonghan was busy explaining something to his bunny, Soonyoung abruptly leaned into his husband's intimacy and smugly stole a kiss from him. "And you too, baby."

Jihoon snorted, but a glint of mischief could be seen in his fond gaze, how the mole under his left eye moved as a knowing smirk appeared. "There will be a little body between us."

"So? I like challenges."

"Dumbass, Hannie is a light sleeper. Don't do anything or you will see yourself on the street in the middle of tonight."

"Okay okay, I'm just kidding." Soonyoung defeatedly said, stealing another kiss.

• • • • • • • • • • • • •

Jihoon hummed to the melody playing from his phone, rinsing the dishes under the water when he heard a voice enter the kitchen.

"Hoon."

He hummed, without turning back, listening to the music and smiled when a pair of arms crept around his waist. He heard Soonyoung sighing on his shoulder, with the embrace tightening.

"What's it, Soon?"

"I need to recharge." Jihoon sighed, he leaned slightly on his partner's hair as a form of comfort. "I can understand why Hannie doesn't like moving now. Tons of papers and signups to do! And all of them will take at least a week to finish! Ugh!" Soonyoung cried. "My precious time is being wasted!"

"Yeah, so much work isn't it? If I can choose I will never move even an inch away to anywhere. But sadly, it isn't my choice nor yours to make. And it's even more cruel because we were supposed to get used to it, but it's been years and we still can't."

"I wished we could rewind time and go back to the good ol' days."

Jihoon shook his head. "Even if we could, it would still happen regardless, we can't change it."

"I know."

Short silence, before the black haired continued. "By the way, where's Jeonghan?"

"He's sleeping in the living room. But gosh babe, did you see that!? Our baby ate three slices of your apple pie in one go!" The shock in the other's voice was apparent and Jihoon slipped a chuckle, it's fortunate that they're still able to laugh like this. "What is the magic, Hoon? I tried to make one like you before but Hannie just stared at it and didn't want to take a bite."

"I’ll tell you a secret, Soon. It’s my sister’s magic, not mine."

"Her?" Soonyoung began to pepper kisses on his nape. "Yeah she was always the best cook."

"Mentioning about cooking, isn't the neighbor across our house a baker?" Jihoon turned off the faucet, putting the dishes into the racks. "I'm planning to make a trip to visit them this week, maybe the day after. It's better to know the hood we're going to stay in."

"Actually, the baker just rang our door earlier." Soonyoung said. "He came to greet us, even bring us some brownies."

"Oh? Such a nice guy."

"Yeah, he also has a son, a chirpy one. They were at the door and the kid maybe was able to sniff Jeonghan's scent. I have to repeatedly deny his insistence on going in."

"Why?" Jihoon frowned.

"Don't worry, he's an omega, so is his father. Their scents were sweet." Soonyoung quickly placated. "Probably wanting to make friends."

"I don't think so." Jihoon dried his hands and pried his husband's arms, turning around. "We don't know them."

"Me too babe, but the kid is only 6. I know we shouldn't trust strangers but kids overall are the most friendly creatures."

"Well, Hannie isn't."

"Yeah he isn't." Soonyoung sighed. "Let him make friends, Hoon. We can't help him, so we have to let others do it."

"But I'm worried. If anything happens to him, again, I will lose my mind."

"Hannie needs to have friends, Hoon. I understand your concern, I really do. But we can't keep him from enjoying his childhood. You know how each year his birthday is always celebrated with us alone, right? Just his parents, no one else."

Jihoon's frown ceased, his heart was aching at the bringing up. Jeonghan was 7 now, he's older and has become more understanding, but back when he was still small, it would be worse.

He would pick Jeonghan up at his daycare, and while the other kids were running around and screaming with their peers, his baby would always stay alone in the corner. No one has ever been seen by his side either even if it was Soonyoung's turn.

The kid also wasn't invited to any birthday, he hadn't seen Jeonghan show him any card until they moved. Jihoon did ask him, of course, and the answer was "They hated me, Dada" while crying into his hug.

At first Jihoon was supportive, constantly encouraging the little one's wish in making friends. But from time to time having to witness the child he adored to heart get treated so badly by people he just wanted to be friends with, Jihoon had become more protective and defensive. To the point where he would make sure Jeonghan's friends were heartily good before letting them get close to him.

"Hoonie?" Jihoon blinked his eyes at his husband's call, he was unconsciously zoning out while thinking. "Sorry."

"It'll be okay." Soonyoung softly smiled, pecking on his lips. "He's also my son, our son, actually. I will never let anyone hurt him, I've vowed it in my name. So let your guard down this time."

Jihoon squeezed the other's bare arm, reluctantly. "I'll think about it." Another silence, before their small talk went on. "Anyway, what did you and the baker talk about?"

"Nothing much. Just exchanged names and jokes." Soonyoung shrugged. "His name is Mingyu, quite a friendly peer, he moved here a few years ago and would be willing to lend a hand if we need help. The son is, well, like father like son you know. And he's…"

5 seconds, then 10. Jihoon's lips curled up in amusement. "Don't tell me you've already forgotten his name."

"Yah! I'm just not good at remembering names, especially strangers. My max is literally two!"

"They were exactly your max."

"I promised you I really got it! His name is.. um- something Seung- Fuck!" Soonyoung groaned, face scrunching up like a grumbled tissue.

"Alright, don't torture your brain anymore, it will explode." Jihoon flicked the other's forehead playfully, laughing at the sulk expression. "Cute."

He kissed the pouting lips, smiling to himself as his husband froze, but Soonyoung was quick in improvising, years of being in love wasted for nothing. So he hurriedly kissed back, pushing Jihoon toward the sink lightly, tasting him in every corner, causing him to whimper in an attempt to really savor.

Jeonghan was always near, so they hadn't had a good chance to give in totally to their instincts. Just like this, right now.

They only parted after minutes, breaths overlapping, catching glimpses of themselves in each other's eyes, enjoying the shared heat in between.

"You horny asshole." Jihoon closed his eyes, ears tinted pink under the kitchen fluorescent lights.

"Heh." Soonyoung pressed his forehead against him. "Your horny asshole."

Jihoon rolled his eyes for the nth time of the day. They would be enjoying it, not caring about anything until a weak whimper stiffened their laid back.

The black haired immediately pulled himself together, rushing out of the kitchen, protect mode on.

"Hannie!"

He sprinted to Jeonghan lying on the sofa in the living room, children's songs playing in the background. Removing the jacket that must have been draped on by Soonyoung and scooped Jeonghan up in his arms. Jihoon's heart dropped to the pit of his stomach seeing the child's face was in a mess with tears.

“It's okay, it's okay. Dada is here." He comforted the child while his husband turned off the TV. "Your bunny, baby." Soonyoung picked up the dampened bunny on the couch, giving it to him and Jeonghan immediately squeezed it.

The parents exchanged a glance.

Jeonghan's snot flowed out as he sniffed. "Here, let me wipe it for you." Soonyoung handed him tissues, and Jihoon used them to clean both Jeonghan's runny nose and wet face. "What's wrong Hannie?"

But the child just carried on crying, small hands trembling against Jihoon's shirt. And while their baby's sudden distress was still not settled, the parents couldn't help but to feel even more and more panicked.

"It's okay, it's okay baby. Your fathers are here for you."

They did what they thought was best: Jihoon gently rocking him and Soonyoung holding his tiny hands, squeezing them. They let him cry as much as he could, until he's calm enough to finally tell them what was wrong.

"I- I have a nightmare.." Jeonghan hiccuped as he said, and Soonyoung stroked his back.

"A nightmare? How did it go, baby? Can you tell us?"

They waited a little more, patiently. "A man.." He continued through heavy sobs.

"A man?" Jihoon repeated the child's words, subtly encouraging him.

"He- he broke into our house, and- and took me away from you and Appa!" Jeonghan wailed even more badly, tears completely ruining Jihoon's shirt. "I fought, and bit him, but he just kept dragging me away.."

The silence was loud when the kid finished. Jeonghan's sobs filled up the whole room, hugging his bunny tightly in his arms. The kid must be so distressed because his cries only intensified, the scent turned completely sour. Jihoon and Soonyoung shared a look, inaudible words with unreadable emotions conveyed.

"It must've been so scary. Shh, it's okay baby, you're fine now. Dada is here, and no one will take you away. Dada and Appa will always protect you." Jihoon fondly whispered, holding Jeonghan close. Soonyoung planted a kiss on the kid's forehead then off he went, the sound of door locking and window curtains pulled down heard in the distance.

"I fought him Dada, and bit him,…"

"I know, I know, our Hannie is so strong. He's the strongest in this world."

Jihoon brought the child upstairs to him and Soonyoung's bedroom, carefully in his steps to not startle Jeonghan furthermore. The kid had his own room of course, but now he's too stressed to be left in a whole room alone, he had always loved to stay with his parents anyway.

"Dada, can I sleep with you tonight?"

"Yes, baby. You don't have to ask." Jihoon kissed the child's cheek, maneuvering him down on the newly-made sheet, watching Jeonghan look up at him with eyes filled with fear. His heart throbbed.

He scooted onto the bed beside him, holding the little figure in his arms. He thought of diverting the topic to something happy to ease the child's anxious state.

"Hannie, I'll have a trip around our neighborhood to greet our neighbours. Do you want to join me?"

"When, Dada?"

"Maybe the day after tomorrow? I'll need to help your Appa first."

"I want to come too."

"There will be friends too, you can play with them if you're bored." Jihoon said hopefully.

"Really?" Jeonghan yawned, a hint of cheer was seen behind the puffy eyes. "Will they like me?"

Jihoon's inside wrecked at his child's words, but he pushed it down.

"Yes Hannie, they will, you're the sweetest child I’ve ever known."

It was silent after. He heard shuffles and the bed moved: Soonyoung scooting in with them, wrapping his arms around his husband and child, squishing Jeonghan in between.

They exchanged hushing words when Jeonghan suddenly said, almost inaudibly, into Jihoon's chest.

"Dada, can you sing me a song?"

"What do you like to hear, baby?"

“Anything is okay." He felt the kids shifted slightly. The black haired thought for a moment, before deciding to go for a common tune that he knew Jeonghan had remembered by heart.

‘Cause my love, mine all mine,
I love my my mine
Nothing in the world belongs to me
But my love,
Mine all mine.

Chapter Text

"Hannie." Jihoon knocked on the door, holding a plate of sliced apples with peanut butter. He heard footsteps behind the door, and the little hanging board writing "Hannie's room" swung as it opened.

"Hello Dada." Jeonghan's wide, toothy grin greeted him. And the kid stepped aside for his father to come in.

"What are you doing baby?" Jihoon asked, putting the snack on the desk. He saw colorful cut papers on the carpet, a box full of rocks and a glass bottle lying nearby: the child seemed to be in the middle of making something.

It has been three days since the night Jeonghan had that nightmare. He was really scared, not wanting to do anything without his parents; he would even leave to look for them if he couldn't see them. Yet god didn't make kids the most carefree creatures in the world for nothing and it wasn't long later that Jihoon could see Jeonghan laughing and teasing with Soonyoung again.

His fathers were more than delighted because apparently, happiness suited their child more.

"I wanna make flower bottles." Jeonghan said. He walked to the window and showed Jihoon a finished creation of his sitting on the post. "Like this one."

Jihoon smiled, picking the bottle up. He observed: noticing the rocks he just saw were now using as the base, covered with glitters. The flowers were made from craft paper, planted in the rocky soil and growing past the bottle's neck with different colors: white, pink and blue flowers, and outside the bottle was tied with a purple ribbon. His son had a knack for crafting after all.

The black haired inspected it under the anticipating look from Jeonghan. The big brown eyes watched him whenever he lifted or lowered the bottle.

"It's pretty." He fondly patted Jeonghan's hair, and his face immediately lit up. "Now now my little artist, won't you take a break and eat those apples? You must be hungry."

Jeonghan happily nodded. His small feets trailed beside Jihoon as the male brought the plate to his play carpet. And when he sat down, the child immediately climbed onto his lap and wooed in excitement as Jihoon gave him the snack.

The adult smiled, sniffing the sweet vanilla fragrance his son exuded.

"Dada, when will Appa come home?" The blonde asked, as he gave Jihoon a slice dipped in peanut butter.

He took that from the child and bit a crunchy bite. "I don't know, baby."

"I miss him." Jeonghan pouted. "I want him to be home to play with me."

"He will. He got work to do today so he couldn't stay at home with you and me. But he will be back before you can even realize, baby." Jihoon gently caressed the kid's hair.

"I'll show him the bottles! And the flowers too!"

"Yes~ he will love it." The black haired smiled. "By the way, I'm planning to go out right now, do you want to go with me?"

"Where?"

"The mall in town, just for some-"

"Okay!!" Jeonghan got off his lap, peanut butter smeared on the corner of his lips.

Jihoon got up as well. He picked a tissue from the tissue box on the desk and wiped the sauce off Jeonghan's face while the child stood still like a good kitten. "Do you want me to help you change?" He asked after, booping his baby's cute nose.

"I can do it! I'm a big boy!" Jeonghan crossed his arms, puffing his cheeks up.

The black haired chuckled, his eyes softened in fondness as he gazed at him. "Okay. I will leave some space for you. Remember to wear warm clothes, alright? Fall season is about to start."

"Okay Dada!" Jeonghan saluted him. And Jihoon patted his hair one more time before the adult reluctantly walked out as his baby pushed him. He's still a little protective over Jeonghan though: the thought of the little boy that he used to tuck in to sleep every night, one day would become a teenager, then an adult, then a married man, and would completely slip out of his grasp squeezed Jihoon's heart in all the horrible ways. He's sad about it, and so was his husband.

Jihoon heaved a sigh. He should also get changed, probably into something warmer. Because the forecast said the temperature would likely drop at least 2 to 3 celsius later in the afternoon. It's fortunate that he had nagged at his husband to wear that jacket and scarf before he left.

He put on a long sleeve sweater, skinny jeans, a pair of socks and a coat. The male carried a few of his belongings and headed out, waiting for his kid in front of his door. It wasn't long before it creaked and Jeonghan peeked out.

"Dada." The blonde called, jumping out.

The adult smiled, watching his son twirl, showing his outfit to him. Jeonghan also had a sense of fashion, he forgot to mention.

"Do you like the dungarees we bought for you, baby?" Jihoon asked, as Jeonghan's bunny Doljong legs bounced outside the pouch that was tied to his back. Soonyoung bought it when they went to a thrift shop before so Jeonghan could carry his favourite ted everywhere he went. He loved that bunny, absolutely.

"Yes! It's pretty." Jeonghan's eyes ceased to be only half of their size whenever he was happy. The boy tugged on Jihoon's hand, trying to pull his father with his tiny figure, voice laced with eagerness. "Let's go Dada!"

"Okay okay." Jihoon said, following the little one's excitement.

It took more than a quarter and three of Jeonghan's made up songs for them to arrive at the mall in the center of the town. It wasn't particularly big and was still lacking, but Jihoon didn't want to drive to another mall that was a lot farther away.

"Wa! It's so big!" Jeonghan gawked as Jihoon helped him to unfasten his seatbelt, apparently to a 7-year old this was big. And didn't wait for his father to finish locking their car, the child abruptly ran off without Jihoon and causing him to have to rush to close it to chase after the boy. "Wait for Dada Hannie!"

He passed the entrance and luckily was able to catch Jeonghan's arms before the kid completely meddled in the crowd of people. "Jeonghan." He sternly called, which immediately got Jeonghan to look back. "What do I say whenever we're out in public?"

Jeonghan instantly stopped. The excitement on his face slowly got replaced by an alike kicked puppy expression. "No leaving without Papa or Dada." He mumbled in small, guiltily glancing at his father.

Jihoon sighed, crouching down to his child's eye level, holding his hands. "Because there are bad people that will take you away from us. Don't run, okay?"

Jeonghan lowered his head, mumbling. "Sorry."

"It's alright. I'm not upset." Jihoon tucked a blonde strand behind the kid's ear. He stood up, with Jeonghan's tiny hand held onto his fingers, securing him. "Let's go, okay?" The boy only shyly nodded.

The little feets trailed beside Jihoon's large ones. Seeing Jeonghan's innocent eyes still lit up every time they walked by a fancy shop was able to ease Jihoon's mind. He knew he was stricter than his husband, and usually he wondered if being more disciplined was worth a shot if one day Jeonghan wouldn't like him anymore because of it. Yet having the child attached to him like this, excitedly pointing stuff to him, was a soothing medicine to the bitterness sometimes he felt.

Jeonghan had a mild fear of socialising with strangers, so Jihoon held him really close in order to keep him comforted. But it got a little worse when they stepped into a store, people bumped into them while passing by and Jihoon could feel Jeonghan tugging on his leg.

"Are you okay baby?" The male asked, as he pulled out a cart from the stall. "I'm okay, Dada." Jihoon could see how forceful the smile his child wore and sensed how his vanilla scent got slightly off its usual sweetness.

"Do you want to sit on this?" He said, gesturing to the child-seat on the cart.

"But I'm a big boy."

Jihoon smiled. "Big boys can sit too. You remember that time your Appa almost destroyed the store's cart?" The mention got Jeonghan to grin. "But it was too big for him!"

"So he got stuck." Jihoon added and the child grinned even more. "So?"

Jeonghan nodded and opened his arms for Jihoon to pick him up. The male carefully put his child into the seat, checking whether his legs were comfortable and once he deemed the child was okay, Jihoon pushed the cart.

"Tutu~" Jeonghan made a little sound, imitating the cartoon train he usually watched on the TV, and he giggled when Jihoon reciprocated by acting like a captain.

While busy maintaining his little conversation with the child, Jihoon still remembered why he got here in the first place: to buy some groceries. Jeonghan loved sweets, and Jihoon was always weak toward him, so it was expected when he woke up one day and found out they ran out of so much stuff.

To keep Jeonghan not bored during the stroll, the male gave him something he had been quite obsessed with lately: dino nuggets. He put one box inside the cart and gave one to Jeonghan, which the kid instantly received and eyes sparkled at it.

Also, it worked like a great distraction for Jihoon to quickly push by the plushies section. It's not like the black haired wouldn't buy it for Jeonghan, a pair of puppy eyes and he could give cash for like 3 of it. But the problem was he's too weak for his child! There were times he bought plushies with really questionable design choices that Jeonghan chose out of spontaneous interest only for him to later on hate that.

Jihoon still remembered that one one-eyed monster he bought during Halloween. And we all knew where this was going when later neither Jihoon nor Soonyoung could convince their baby that the plushie wasn't scary. And they gifted it to a neighbor soon after Jeonghan literally banned it from staying in his room.

He was about to pass by the omega store, before he thought of something and directed the cart back. Jihoon looked at his child's outfit, thinking how adorable he looked in it and decided to buy more for him. Jihoon didn't need anything new, but Jeonghan did.

"Do you like this color, Hannie?" Jihoon showed the child a pastel pink hoodie with a white fluffy dog on the front. "Can we have the blue one?" Jeonghan pointed to another with a different color on the shelf.

He picked the one Jeonghan pointed to, unfolding it to check to be sure and put it inside the cart. He was about to grab some more, probably a hat with bunny ears as decoration when someone bumped into him.

The man walking in the opposite direction crashed into his shoulder and just walked by without an apology given.

The aisle wasn't even that small, it's good for two people with their carts strolling around without bumping into each other. But he chose to ignore the rudeness and just proceeded on with his errands.

"Dada." Jihoon turned to his baby who was worriedly looking at him. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, baby. Don't worry."

"Why is he so rude? He bumped into you first but he didn't even say sorry." Jeonghan crossed his arms, huffing.

"It's okay sweetie, maybe they're busy."

Jeonghan didn't buy it, and he's still pouting when the said man stopped in front of a shelf a few steps away from them, seemingly checking on some brands.

But that raised questions inside Jihoon’s mind; because from the scent alone the man was an alpha, with no partners around, why would a single alpha be in an omega's aisle?

"Dada, he dropped something." Jeonghan said. He looked to where his child was pointing and saw there’s a wallet on the floor; probably the man dropped it when he bumped into Jihoon. There were only three of them in this aisle though. "Should we give it back to him?"

Jihoon considered for a second, just because people were being rude to him didn't mean he would be also. They could just quickly give him the purse and walk away.

"Okay, you wanna do that?"

Jeonghan nodded.

"Sir!" The boy called, waving his little arm to get the man's attention. "You dropped your wallet!" The alpha turned at it, and Jeonghan beamed when he put down the product. But Jihoon immediately felt off when he saw the man's reddened face while he approached them.

"Thank you, little boy." The man crouched down to pick his belongings up and shoved it inside his pants pocket.

"You're welcome, sir." Jeonghan smiled. And though Jihoon also tried to be friendly like his son, he warily accepted it when the man put his hand out for a shake. He saw a glimpse of eyes shifting from the man, and with an alpha that was not a good sign.

"You are here alone with your kid?" Jihoon frowned at the bizarre emphasis.

"My husband is just around. He's waiting outside for us while we shop." The discreet cheer subsided from the alpha's face. Okay Jihoon knew what this one was trying to do.

"What's your name?"

"Jihoon."

"I'm Ethan." The man smiled. "What's about your little boy?"

"Jeonghan." The sweet child answered with a toothy grin, not knowing something was about to go with the alpha in front.

Jihoon felt Ethan’s hand squeezing him in the handshake and immediately he yanked his hand away. He looked at the man, keeping a safe distance between them. Sniffing the alpha's scent mildly reeked with alcohol, Jihoon internally cursed. You know what's worse than an alpha in an omega's place? A drunk alpha in the said omega's place. How did the security even let him in?

"Sorry sir. My son and I have to go now, my husband is waiting for us." Jihoon sternly stated.

But the alpha only smugly grinned, he made a defeated motion by shrugging his shoulders and shaking his head as if something wronged him. "You don't have to lie, omega."

Jihoon hissed. "About what?"

"Isn't it obvious? Your husband? You omega smells nothing of an alpha." Ethan put a step forward and the other instantly shielded his kid away. "Well two omegas actually.”

"You have such a nice scent, Jihoon, and pretty good genes too. Is that why your son looks like a picture?" The alpha shamelessly scanned Jeonghan up and down and simultaneously breathing deep into Jihoon's personal space. "I don't mind a used omega honestly, as long as they bring the best-"

Jihoon shoved the man, and that caused Ethan to stumble backward. "Mind your manners." Jihoon pressed, about to push his child away when suddenly they were stopped by a strong force.

"Oh no, you're not going to get away like that."

Ethan suddenly grabbed Jihoon’s arms and pulled him but Jeonghan immediately held his other arm, keeping him in place. "Dada!" Jeonghan cried, his small figure trembled as his aroma worsened with stress.

The alpha gripped around where he had Jihoon, and the black haired instantly frowned in pain. He had a years old wound, and bad for him that was where Ethan was groping. So instead of quickly freeing himself, Jihoon was paralyzed.

"Let him go! You're hurting him!" Jeonghan shouted, voice clogged with unshed tears.

"Huh? Oh right, it really looks like I'm hurting your father." The man raised his brow. "But you know I'm not right? I'm a gentleman."

"Bullshit." Jihoon retorted. He aggressively growled when Ethan crossed their distance, his reeked in alcohol breaths lingered in front of Jihoon's face and he felt sick to the stomach. "Little omega has such a bad mouth eh?"

"Fuck your omega-" The alpha clawed into his wounded arm and Jihoon dropped pale; the pain instantly shot through his spine weakening his spirit. It's been years but it was an injury that was never left to fully heal.

All of sudden, Jihoon heard Jeonghan scream, his voice pierced through the tense air as loud as it could. Before he could react, Ethan completely yanked Jihoon out of his child's grasp and used his free hand to clamp Jeonghan's mouth, causing the child to roughly fall out of his seat into the cart and mobbing the boxes inside it.

"Jeonghan!"

"SHUT THE HELL UP!!! You're going to make everyone come here!!"

Jeonghan squirmed as his eyes swelled up. Jihoon saw Ethan pin the boy's head down, hand squeezing his face and Jeonghan desperately tried to remove it yet a 7 year-old couldn't do anything to an adult's strength.

"Mm-murt-"

"Hurt right? You brat deserve it." Ethan snickered, ignoring the boy's cries muffled underneath his force.

"Let him go!! What do you think you are doing to a kid?" Jihoon attempted to free himself yet it availed nothing.

"Normally I don't like omegas, but one trip and got two? Damn that's a nice shot." The alpha grinned, moving his face closer to Jeonghan and the terrified boy tried to pull himself away with all his will. "A pretty one too. I never thought I could win a jackpot like this-"

Before Ethan could finish his sentence, something suddenly appeared from a corner then flashed before Jihoon's eyes, it sent Ethan to fly a meter away from him onto the floor.

Jihoon was stunned, watching the drunk alpha groaning on the ground. His wounded arm's fingers twitched from being shocked due to the pain. But hearing his child's sobs instantly snapped him back to his senses and Jihoon rushed to check on him. "Hannie!!"

"Dada!!" Jeonghans' cries clogged the boy's throat as he clung desperately to his father. "It's okay, it's okay. Dada is here." Although the pain in his arm was screaming at him, Jihoon abandoned it and only focused on his child.

The black haired lifted Jeonghan's face, seeing the red print around his mouth and it caused Jihoon's rage to reel instantly. He could care less about anything but his husband and child!

"You shit! You-" Ethan shouted at them, and Jihoon hid Jeonghan away. Yet a tall figure also shielded them from Ethan almost immediately and out of instinct Jihoon smelled it: alpha. Another one.

The alpha brought Ethan up by his collar, his scent worked into dominating the air around them. "Old hag, you better get your ass outta here or I will personally fucking do it! And if I do it, it won't end nicely for you."

"Oh shiver timber eh? What can you do-?"

"What can't an alpha do?"

Jihoon saw Ethan's face drop pale as the alpha growled at him. "You wouldn't dare-"

"Why would I not dare?!"

Jihoon didn't know who he was. He just held his crying child in his arms, staring at the scene of two alphas in front of him: one threatened and one fearfully slowly submitted.

He felt a tiny tug on his legs and looked down. Jihoon saw two small children standing beside him: one with round cheeks and one in a dinosaur onesie. They pulled on his pants and stood as if wanting to protect him.

"Get lost and don't let me see you again." Jihoon turned back to the fight, seeing the alpha throw Ethan on the floor. He glared at the alpha, at Jihoon, at the scared Jeonghan in his arms with eyes full of red. "You're lucky this time, you bunch of omegas!!” He muttered under his breaths and got on his feets running away, leaving the aisle.

Everyone stood still for a moment until Ethan finally fled out of sight. He shouldn't have brought Jeonghan with him to the mall, so the kid wouldn't get hurt on a supposed little nice trip.

"I'm so sorry, baby." Jihoon stroked his back, hearing gut-wrenching sobs on his shoulder.

"Are you and your son okay?" He looked up at the unfamiliar voice. "Did the man hurt you anywhere?" The alpha asked, his voice laced thick with foreign accent.

"I'm okay." Jihoon shook his head. "Thanks for helping us."

"You're welcome." The man waved, flashing him a radiant grin. Jihoon was about to say something when he felt tugs on his legs, he forgot there were two kids standing next to him. He looked down, catching one that was glancing at his child with worry.

"Is he okay, sir?" The boy with round cheeks asked.

"He is just scared. Thank you for helping us little boy, you were protecting us from the man, right?" Jihoon smiled.

"No problem, sir. He deserves to be kicked in the butt! What a jerk!"

"Seungkwan! Where did you learn that word?" The stranger scolded and the child huffed at it, causing the alpha to heave a sigh. "I'm sorry. He's always like that."

The kid in the dinosaur onesie left Jihoon's side and ran up to the alpha, jumping with his arms wide open wanting to be picked. "By the way, I'm Jun. That kid is Seungkwan, and this is Chan."

Chan roared at Jihoon, and the black haired chuckled as he rocked Jeonghan up and down gently. "I'm Jihoon. And he's Jeonghan."

"Are you both okay? It must be really scary for you. I entered the section to buy something for that little guy there and all of a sudden I heard a scream, so I immediately rushed here. Please don't think of me as a creep."

"How could I? You helped us, we can't thank you enough for that." Jihoon placated.

"Is your little buddy okay?" Jun pointed at Jeonghan in Jihoon's hold. The male glanced at him, hearing his loud cries now ceased to inaudible sniffs, little hands curled around his shirt.

"May I?" Jun mouthed, and Jihoon nodded. "Hi bud." The alpha whispered, approaching carefully as Jihoon patted his child's hair, encouraging him. Sure Jeonghan's scent had shifted back to normal, but the lingering feel of fear was still around.

"Shh, Dada is with you alright? Our saviors are here too. You're safe now. No one will hurt you." He kissed Jeonghan's temple.

It took moments for Jeonghan to finally lift his soaked in tears face to look up, meeting eyes to eyes with Jun and the alpha smiled softly. "Hi Jeonghannie. I'm Jun."

"Thank- thank you." The boy hiccuped, mumbling a small thank that swelled his father's heart.

"You're welcome." Jun bowed. "Do you feel better now?"

Jeonghan nodded and quickly hid back in Jihoon's neck again. "Sorry, he's not good with strangers."

"It's fine." Jun crouched down to scoop the dinosaur onesie up.

"It must be hard to raise two children, Jun." Jihoon commented, not noticing the child with round cheeks suddenly had a quizzical look at him.

"Oh no, I only have this baby here." The alpha blew into Chan's cheeks which elicited the baby's laughs. "This one's dad is busy so I gotta be his babysitter for today." He nodded at Seungkwan.

"I see."

"Anyways, would you mind if I escort you out of the mall? I need to make sure that that wrinkly alpha won't dare to approach you and your son again."

"It's alright. He must've left already. I don't want to bother you."

"I insist." Jun looked at him with a determined expression. And considering his situation: he was hurt and Jeonghan was stressed, having a company go along wouldn't do any harm so Jihoon begrudgingly agreed. "Thank you again."

"It's nothing." Jun flashed him a smile. "Oh I think I kinda left my cart in the middle of the hallway, can we pass by to get it first?"

"Yes please."

As the adults proceeded with their conversation on the way, exchanging some bits about their days, their social lives and eventually found out that Jun was actually a neighbor of theirs, the kids also had their own way of connection. Jeonghan peeked from Jihoon's shoulders, glancing at the round cheeks boy that was trailing behind them.

He had been doing it for quite a time, from inside the store, to the cashier and now outside it. Jeonghan looked at him curiously, wondering why the boy was frowning as if he's thinking of something serious.

They were about to part ways, goodbyes were already exchanged when all of a sudden he exclaimed.

"Seungkwan? What's wrong?" Jun asked while the little one's eyes lit up. "You're that dude's son!"

Jihoon and his child shared a confused look.

"Sir, your husband is Soonyoung right?" Seungkwan continued.

The black haired raised a brow. Huh? Did the kid eavesdrop on him and Jun's conversation?

"Yes?" Per the confirmation Seungkwan excitedly jumped. "Don't you remember me? I've come to your house to greet you with my dad before! We're neighbors!"

"Your dad..?"

"Yes! Mingyu!" That rang a bell for Jihoon. Was it the baker and his son that Soonyoung managed to forget their names? "Your dad was the one who gave us brownies a few days ago, right?"

"Yes!! My dad's brownies are the best brownies ever!" Seungkwan grinned. "But buddy, are you sure you didn't mistake us for someone else?" Jihoon asked.

"No I'm not. I remember him" The boy pointed at Jeonghan, and Jihoon raised a brow.

"I guess it's the scent." Jun explained. "Omegas are instinctively protective of each other and also sensitive to scents. It's common if one will memorize another's on the spot."

"He's sweet! Like mochi!" Seungkwan happily described. "I love mochi!"

Jihoon looked at his son, watching Jeonghan's face flush at the comment, his eyes dazzled as he blinked. Something inside the parent softly melted. "Thank you Seungkwan." He turned to the boy, feeling grateful for him being nice to his son.

"Don't worry. That dumb alpha won't come back anymore. I will protect you." Seungkwan proudly huffed his chest. "With Junnie of course."

The two adults chuckled. They were already at the parking lot, ready to depart, and Jihoon had already had his car started. But now he's sitting on a bench in a nearby park, taking care of Jeonghan's bunny while watching the said kid get dragged away by Seungkwan to the playground.

How did this even happen? Because he was weak, of course. Seungkwan insisted on him to let Jeonghan join the boy's afternoon playdate while they're putting stuff in their junks, and with the Jeonghan’s unfamous puppy eyes, it took less than a minute for Jihoon to say yes. He should've trained better so he could be tougher in front of his kid.

"You look like you're worried for him." Jun suddenly said, stroking a sleeping Chan in his lap.

Jihoon heaved a sigh. "It's okay, it's nothing, just my father's heart." His eyes dawned over the timid silhouette he had remembered in the playground. "Jeonghan doesn't do well with new people so me and my husband worried for him a lot."

"I see." Jun nodded, his gaze glued to Seungkwan that was introducing the new boy to the others. "It's okay, I can assure you he'll be loved dearly during your time here."

"I hope so." Jihoon shrugged.

"Didn't you hear what Seungkwan said earlier? That kid really means his words, don't worry."

He smiled. "I know, I'm not doubting him or anything. I was even so grateful for him when he went his way with Jeonghan. It has always been hard for my son to make friends."

"He's a friendly bud, I told you." The alpha brushed Chan's hair, feeling the baby shift slightly in his sleep. "Also, we are neighbours now, so if anything happens don't hesitate to ask for help okay?"

"I will." Jihoon nodded.

His attention landed back onto the ground, where the flocks of kids were running around, chasing each other. He didn't know what they're playing. But seeing the bright smile on Jeonghan's face as the boy stopped to wave at him was enough to ease his mind.

• • • • • • • • • • • • •

Jeonghan hid behind a bush, keeping quiet as he listened to some kids talking in front of his hiding spot.

"Where's he?" He heard Seungkwan's muffled voice. "He was so easy to catch! But now I can't find him anywhere!" Seungkwan sounded sulky and Jeonghan tried his best not to laugh.

"I don't know." He heard another that he couldn't recognize. There were so many people and though they had introduced themselves to him, Jeonghan just forgot all. "Let's go search for him in the slides, maybe he's hiding there."

He heard steps walking away, and once he believed it was safe, Jeonghan could finally let out a sigh in relief. He wanted to stay till the end of this game. It's not fair if they're playing hide and seek and he's always the first to be caught because Seungkwan knew what he smelled like.

So when Jeonghan saw these bushes of flowers, he immediately thought of using them. They're a mix of so many different species, it would help to saturate his scent and confuse Seungkwan, gaining him more chances to win.

Jeonghan quietly cheered to himself, he wanted to tell this genius move to his Dada before he forgot. But he's so far away, it would require the boy to move out of his hiding spot and he didn't want to get caught.

He couldn't relax for long when suddenly footsteps were heard in front of his hiding spot again. Jeonghan instantly held his breath, patiently waiting for the person to go away. He didn't hear anything more for a straight minute and he thought it was finally alright.

But he was surprised when his bush shuffled. And before Jeonghan could run away, his hand was grabbed.

He tried to shake it off but his catcher was firmer. As much as the blonde wanted to escape, that person didn't even let him slip. So Jeonghan begrudgingly watched as the catcher struggled to push himself through the flower bush.

He sat on his knees in front of him, a few leaves stuck on his hair. He had black hair like his Dada, but longer, to his ears. And he reminded Jeonghan of deer Bambi in the story his Appa always told him before his bed time with those doe eyes; they ceased into crescents as he grinned.

Jeonghan didn't remember him, rather feeling upset because his plan of staying till the last was ruined!

Like seeing the apparent sulk on Jeonghan's face, the boy gently squeezed their hand, smiling before he opened to say in a voice laced thick with foreign accent.

"Sorry, but gotcha."

Chapter Text

Jeonghan swung his legs, sitting on the bench happily eating his cotton candy while watching Seungkwan in the playground, playing kicking-can with his friends.

He felt so happy today, because he got to make new friends and run around for a whole afternoon. He did like staying at home and doing his things alone, but sometimes spending his time outside with new people wasn't so bad. Not to mention, his Appa had also come! The boy literally jumped on his father when he arrived, still in his work outfit and tie but didn't hesitate to scoop Jeonghan up, cooing at him. He even bought him candy.

He also got to know that uncle Jun was his family's neighbors by eavesdropping on the adults' conversation. His parents were busy talking to Jun about all sorts of things, in short, just grown-up things that Jeonghan's little mind couldn't understand.

Jeonghan picked a cotton ball with two fingers, tasting it slowly because he's scared the candy would finish if he ate too fast. His Dada normally didn't allow snacks before dinner, but today was different because he didn't scold his Appa when he saw the candy in Jeonghan's hand, just smiled.

Seungkwan, the friend he just met, was the best one he ever knew.

He's a good person and Jeonghan liked him.

Only one thing, Jeonghan didn't know whether it's bad or not, was that the kid bragged about his father too much, almost every chance he got to and the next second everyone would have to hear about how good he was. Yet it's not an entirely bad thing, just kinda annoying, because Jeonghan could understand: he loved his fathers too.

He watched Seungkwan standing in the middle of a circle of kids, seemingly to be explaining to them some rules’ game that Jeonghan had proposed to take a break from earlier, he seriously wondered where did Seungkwan get that much stamina. If this was a bed right here instead of the wooden bench, Jeonghan would lay down and fall asleep immediately.

He was enjoying himself, occasionally glancing around, when he looked to his left and he noticed the kid with deer eyes: the one that caught Jeonghan in hide and seek, was looking at him. He smiled as their eyes met and Jeonghan just stared back with so much confusion. Forgive him, he's still awkward with people.

Jeonghan frowned, he didn't even remember that kid's name or anything. Why would he be looking at him like that?

He munched a cotton ball. And the boy smiled at him.

Oh! Jeonghan's eyes widened. Maybe because he wanted Jeonghan's cotton candy? It must be right! Because when his Appa gave him the stick all the kids were looking at him with such jealous pairs of eyes.

Should he share it? But he loved his candy too much! Jeonghan pouted. But he shouldn't be selfish either, his Appa taught him that it's a bad thing to be greedy over anything, even if it's what he liked, like candies.

Jeonghan looked away, hoping that that deer kid would also do the same. But when he turned back he was still there, looking at him and even tilting his head when he met eyes with Jeonghan.

He's still upset with him, of course, because he ruined his amazing hide and seek move! But he wasn't petite, he's a big boy, he shouldn't be that bitter over it. So Jeonghan begrudgingly waved at him, and that caught the deer kid in surprise.

Jeonghan beckoned for him. And with a clear reluctance, that kid still did as he was told, approaching Jeonghan with a rather quizzical look.

"Here." He picked a cotton ball, giving it to him. "You can have this."

The deer kid received it with both hands, cupping it while looking at Jeonghan with the most confused expression ever, as if the blonde just told him that Santa couldn't fly. "Why?"

"Because you wanted it?" Jeonghan raised a brow.

"I did?"

"Didn't you?" He put away his cotton candy in case the kid would ask for more. "I will only give you that one though."

The kid shrugged, sitting on the empty place on the bench beside Jeonghan and eating the cotton ball that was given to him. "Maybe I really did."

"You were staring at me though?"

"Because I have never seen you around here before."

"Well, I'm new." Jeonghan explained. "I just moved in with my fathers."

"I see." The boy hummed. "By the way, what's your name?"

"I'm Jeonghan."

"That's a beautiful name."

Jeonghan grinned at the compliment. "Thank you. What about you?"

"You can call me Jisoo."

"Jisoo?" The boy softly smiled in return, his scent sweetened slightly. "That's right."

Jeonghan got confused for a second, were alphas supposed to smell sweet and stuff? His Appa always smelled like coffee though, and it was really bitter. He's sure he didn't mistake the other's secondary gender because the boy confirmed it with him before when he was caught.

"What does that bunny on your back do?" Jisoo abruptly asked, pointing to his Doljong lying head down in the pouch tied to Jeonghan's back.

"He's Doljong." The blonde enthusiastically replied. "My favorite ted, I like to carry him around with me."

"Oh." Joshua raised a brow.

That got Jeonghan's heart to drop. He forgot that people didn't like it when mentioning the bunny; they called him childish, crybaby, wimp, all sorts of things just because he enjoyed bringing the ted around. He loved Doljong but he hated being picked on by his classmates.

Jeonghan sulked to himself, great, now he had another person find him weird. And it's worse because he's supposed to make friends, not creating a chance to be a potential target. He didn't need another person's opinion on him, their opinions always hurt.

He felt Jisoo's eyes bore into his soul, it's all weird and things and he's scared to hear what Jisoo would have to say next. So Jeonghan quickly ate the rest of his candy and hopped off the bench running straight to his fathers when Jisoo was about to say something. Sorry, but Jeonghan really didn't need to hear it.

"Dada." He tugged on Jihoon's leg, and the couple greeted him with sweet smiles. His parents were just the best out of anything.

"Hi Hannie." Soonyoung crouched down, patting the kid's head. "Did you enjoy your candy?"

Jeonghan nodded, opening his arms demanding to be carried. His Appa only slipped a chuckle and as the best father ever, he didn't hesitate to bring Jeonghan up.

"My my, my Hannie must be so tired from running all afternoon, right?"

The boy let out a big yawn, his eyes fluttering as the sleepiness slowly sat in. He leaned his head on Soonyoung's shoulder as his Appa gently rocked him up and down. "Do you wanna go home?"

"What about Dada's dinner?" Jeonghan said.

"Of course we will. Your Dada will scold us if we miss his dinner. Can you still join us?"

He hummed tiredly, breathing in his father's bitter coffee scent. Though coffee was never an option on his sweet's list, the certain smell always brought him so much warmth, like a cozy blanket and a good bed on a chilling day.

"Okay, let's go home." Soonyoung glanced at his partner and turned to Jun who was in the middle of a conversation with them. The alpha casually drew a smile, fixing a sleeping Chan on his back.

"I figure we can continue this on another fine day." Said Jun. "It was nice talking to you, Jihoon, Soonyoung. Let's meet again soon."

"Definitely." Jihoon agreed. "Again, I sincerely thank you for helping us Jun. Please know that I appreciate your help a lot, if you weren't there maybe this wouldn't end nicely like that."

"I told you it's nothing, don't have to be so polite. It's just a basic manner for everyone. Now you two should begin to head back, it's getting dark and your little bud looks like he can doze off in a second."

"Okay, see ya Jun." The alpha grinned and excused himself to fetch a playful Seungkwan in the playground. Right Seungkwan was still playing. His stamina was honestly insane.

After Jun left, Jihoon and Soonyoung shared a look, and the former abruptly heaved a sigh. "It was indeed crazy today." He stroked Jeonghan's back, eliciting soft purrs from him. "Let's go home, my little angel. It was a rough day for you."

Soonyoung gently carried Jeonghan in one arm and put out the other for Jihoon to hold, looking at him. "It was for you too, babe."

The black haired smiled, intertwining their hands together. But before they could leave, Jihoon suddenly felt a tug on his leg and when he turned back, he was meeting eyes with an unfamiliar kid, his small face adorned with a warm smile.

"Hi bud. What can I help you with?" Jihoon asked.

The kid shook his head, his hand was holding a single lavender seemingly to have been picked from one of the flower bushes. "Hello sir, I'm Jisoo. And here I have this little present to give as a way to say sorry for my bad doing earlier."

Jihoon saw his gaze drawn in a particular direction. And as he looked back at it, he realized Jisoo was staring at Jeonghan on his husband's shoulder.

"Jeonghan, would you receive this gift? I know it’s nowhere near fancy but I hope you will accept it as my apology." Jisoo said. Soonyoung and his husband glanced at each other then Soonyoung turned around, letting the two kids see face to face.

Jeonghan looked unexpectedly shy while Jisoo was watching him with his lavender fluttering at the passing breeze.

"Thank you." Jeonghan finally said. Jihoon received it for him and gave it to Jeonghan, having a second in awe as the purple shade of the flower gave off a really good contrast to his son's blonde hair.

"Your rabbit is cute." Jisoo added, and that got Jeonghan's face to lit up. "Really??"

"Yes. How he matches with your outfit is beautiful."

Jeonghan bashfully smiled, hiding his face behind his Appa's shoulder. A sleepy Jeonghan was a timid Jeonghan, and Jihoon found it endearing.

"Are you going home now?" Jisoo asked.

The blonde remained silent, and his father had to answer it for him. "Yes. Do you want to take a ride home?"

"It's okay sir. My brother will come soon." Jisoo shook his head.

"Then make sure you won't follow strangers alright? Stay at one spot and ask an adult to be with you until your brother comes."

"Yes I will, thank you."

Jihoon smiled, and they both said goodbyes to the kid as they parted ways. Even Jeonghan peeked from Soonyoung's shoulder to wave at him.

Jisoo watched the family take their leave, disappearing at the corner of the park before he approached the swing and took the seat. Jun eventually passed by him along with a calmer Seungkwan, and the alpha offered him a ride but Jisoo just kindly denied it.

It's from when the park was still lively, while Jisoo was waiting, until the street lights had turned on and parents had gone home with their kids, he was still there.

The raven was chilling in the silence company, when a sleek black car drifted into the park's parking lot. A kid with curly hair stepped out from the front seat, he scanned around the place, like trying to look for something and when his eyes landed on Jisoo, a look of relief could be seen on his face.

He warily approached under Jisoo's observation, a look of nervousness detected the closer he got to the boy.

"You're late." Jisoo said and that caused the other to startle immediately. "I'm sorry. The meeting lasted longer than expected. Did you wait long, young master?"

"It's okay Wonwoo." Jisoo got off the bench. "Let's go."

He walked past Wonwoo and that caused the boy to rush to keep up with him. Jisoo was pissed. They got to the car and the curly hair swiftly stepped forward to open the door for Jisoo.

The raven got in and was greeted with a bow from the low-rank soldier on the driver seat. "Good evening young master."

Jisoo said nothing, closing his eyes while Wonwoo shut the door and walked around to his front seat, quickly settling in. The driver checked through the rear-view, making sure his master was having no discomfort before pressing the pedal and roaring the car off into the road.

"Did you have a good day today with the kids, young master?" Wonwoo asked, attempting to initiate a conversation.

"As always." Jisoo said without batting an eye. "Where is 8?"

"He's under training at the main base, sir." The soldier answered while Wonwoo excused himself to take a call.

"I don't recall he has one today."

"It was requested by the boss, sir. He should never lack anything if he wants to be your future companion.”

"Young master." Wonwoo lowered the phone, turning to Jisoo with a cautious look. The boy was already not in a good mood and Wonwoo just didn't need to see the devil. "The boss's assistant demands to meet you."

Jisoo raised a brow, eyes still closing. "Is that what he said to you?"

"Yes sir, I know my place. The assistant himself called me and asked for you to come to the boss's office right now."

"Is he on the call with you there?"

“Yes sir." The boy nodded hesitantly. "Put him on speaker." He followed Jisoo's command with no ado.

"Good evening young master Hong." An acute voice spoke, greeting Jisoo as the first manner. "I heard that you wanted to talk to me?"

"Yes, I wanna know how you are doing."

"I'm fine sir. Thank you for asking."

"Are you sure? I heard some of the soldiers were very worried for your health these days. You should be more careful."

"It's too much sir, I'm just an assistant, how could I receive such generous care from you-"

"So you still know you're an assistant huh?" Jisoo drew a smile, one that got Wonwoo to instantly feel goosebumps all over his body. "Now I want you to repeat what you told my assistant earlier, words by words."

The strong emphasis caused the man on the other end to be silent. A strained stretch of silence hovered inside the car, casually getting shone on by the street lights. Wonwoo and the driver could feel the heaviness of the air, like a stretched balloon about to explode.

"I apologize for my former ignorance, sir." The man spoke, bringing a cool breeze blowing into the tension. "An assistant like me has no right to ask for anything from my master, everything I need to know is serving and acting like my place. I'm deeply ashamed of my shameful behavior earlier to you sir, please forgive me."

Jisoo chuckled. "Good, you still remember. I thought you were complacent enough to forget."

"How could I sir? I will never be brave enough to do something like that”

Jisoo rolled his eyes. “What did you want to tell me?"

"The big boss wants to meet you. He asked to see you at his office tonight to discuss some personal issues."

The raven crossed his legs. "Tell my dad I will come after dinner. I'm on the way home."

"But young master, that is impossible-!"

Jisoo shot a look at Wonwoo and the boy instantly understood, unhesitantly hanging up the call. "You're getting better at understanding me, Wonwoo."

"Thank you sir. But are you sure you don't want to meet the boss right now? He will not be happy to hear about it."

"Wonwoo." Jisoo exuded his alpha aura, opening his eyes with his pupils shift into a good shade of red. The gentleness he masked just now was drained off to be replaced with something meaner and worse. "Don't make me repeat myself."

Wonwoo and the driver, even though they were both alphas, this was the Hong Jisoo they're talking about, the only heir of an unfamous bloodthirsty mafia family.

He could be nice but if he turned brutal, praying to god that he would still have mercy on you.

"I'm tired. So stay silent until I allow you." The raven's alpha suddenly subsided, as if being nice to Jisoo's mans' fear and both of them let out a sigh in relief.

From the rear-view mirror, Wonwoo silently watched his boss who seemed to be deep in thoughts. He looked at the vibrating phone, internally cursing himself to overlook the call because he didn't want to piss Jisoo off furthermore.

It's ironic because he's an alpha but simultaneously was under another one. But Wonwoo wasn't dumb, he knew Jisoo was more than how he looked, he could be a 7-year old ordinary boy outside yet it's how he tricked people by masking that pureness. He in fact was a cobra underneath a sheep's clothing. Wonwoo was glad to be taken under Jisoo's wings because that boy would stir a big fire when he grew up, Wonwoo could foresee it.

He was observing his boss when Jisoo suddenly spoke, startling him.

"Yes sir?" He cautiously replied.

"Do you like flowers?" Jisoo asked and Wonwoo shook his head. "No sir. May I ask why?"

"Nothing."

Jisoo closed his eyes, mind drifting back to the park playdate. He didn't know the boy and didn't pay attention when Seungkwan introduced him. But when he passed by a nosy bush of flowers, he caught a scent that got his chest to squeeze. It's not even painful, barely an ache, yet it still throbbed.

He decided to investigate it and realized it was a lavender scent, a flower that he loathed to the bone and would instantly pluck it out and throw it away.

Jisoo wanted to know who it was, because that smell was never allowed within the raven's proximity and no one around him dared to mention it.

He looked for it, and he met him.

Jeonghan. A typical omega.

With lavender scent.

Jisoo smiled. Seeming like he had found something new to keep his eye on.

"Jihoon?" Soonyoung knocked on the door. He had just finished some paper from work and was looking for his husband. It took him quite a period of time to fill in those, what happened to his husband and son earlier today was infiltrating him. He caught himself huffing out too many times, gripping his pen instead of writing. He couldn't concentrate when all he wanted to do was to seek for that alpha till the end of the Earth.

Soonyoung carefully creaked the door, walking in.

"Shh."

Jihoon put a finger on his mouth, pointing at Jeonghan sleeping soundly on the bed, squeezing his bunny with a story book on his pillow. Soonyoung nodded, and approached his child with such care to not wake him up.

"He wants me to read him a story." Jihoon whispered as he got up from his cramping crouching position. "Usually it would require a full book, but he was already tired from the playdate so guess what, we are lucky." He grinned, but the smile ached Soonyoung's heart.

The male watched his son's chest rise up and down in even breathing motions, his vanilla scent being sweet and soothing. Soonyoung leaned down, planting a kiss on Jeonghan's forehead and brushing his bang to the side.

"Let's go out." Jihoon held his arm. "We won't be able to talk in here, Jeonghan will wake up."

Soonyoung nodded, and he followed Jihoon as they made their ways out of their son's room, leaving the door a little open so they could later check on him before they left.

"Soonyoung ah-" Jihoon wasn't able to finish when he was abruptly pulled into a tight hug. The blonde breathed in his mate's scent, embracing him with so much endearment and love. He couldn't believe that Jihoon was hurt so badly and he, as his husband, wasn't even there.

"I'm so sorry." Soonyoung raspy muttered and Jihoon gently stroked his back, heaving a sigh. "It's not your fault, babe."

"It is. I wasn't there. You were hurt, Jeonghan was hurt. You two were all that mattered to me, if not for Jun, you could get into something worse. How could I be okay if-"

"Hey hey, look at me." Jihoon cupped Soonyoung's face. "I'm fine, Jeonghan is fine, our baby even made friends, we even had new neighbors. Don't blame yourself over something you can't control."

"I know, but I just can't help it." Soonyoung groaned. His brows furrowed into a tight knot and his usual bubbly expression was nowhere to be found. It's a sight that after having been with him for years, Jihoon still couldn't get used to it.

"I love you." Jihoon kissed his nose, and Soonyoung melted by the tenderness of it. "I love you too."

Jihoon grinned, seeing his husband's frown slightly cease. "Is your arm okay?" The other asked, holding his arm gently.

"It's alright. It only hurts if you put pressure on it." Jihoon shook his head.

Suddenly, the blonde had a stern look on his face, and with years of being in love, Jihoon could right away tell what that meant. "Soon, no. It's not worth it."

"It's getting late, let's go to sleep, love." Soonyoung ignored, pecking Jihoon’s cheek.

"Soonyoung."

"Let me close Jeonghan's door."

The male peeked from behind the door to check on his son one last time, and saw a bottle with a lavender sitting on the drawer. "Is that the flower that kid gave Hannie?"

"Yeah he asked me to put it there. But I'm gonna need to do something with it tomorrow to keep it alive."

Soonyoung hummed, closing the door and leading his husband into their room, holding his waist.

"Babe." He called, and the other turned to look at him. Jihoon knew that if it was his husband wanting to do something, even god wouldn't be able to stop him, so he could only remind him, gently, hoping he would listen to him. "Don't overdo it, okay?"

"I promise." Soonyoung fetched his phone in his pocket, planting a kiss on Jihoon's temple. "I have to make a call now, you go to bed first, alright? I will be back soon to cuddle you."

Jihoon frowned, and Soonyoung fondly chuckled. "It's okay, trust me." The blonde booped his nose and walked out of their room, a number showing on his screen that Jihoon had known by heart. It's been so long since he touched it, and he had no plan in doing it again unless it's a real emergency.

Jihoon heaved a heavy sigh. He just really hoped that things would turn out fine for them in the future.

Chapter Text

“Soonyoung! Can you fetch Jeonghan’s sweater for me?” Jihoon said from downstairs, leaning on the kitchen's counter while Jeonghan tied ribbons on the chocolate chip bags. His husband answered with a loud "Yes”, seeming to just get out of his shower.

“Dada.” He turned around to see Jeonghan grinning at him, absent-mindedly the adult too slipped one in reciprocation. “Yes, baby?”

The boy held up one of the bags in a clear wrapper, eyes twinkling as he put it near his face. “Aren't they beautiful?”

Jihoon's gaze softened, leaning down to wipe the smear of white flour on his son’s nose. “Will our neighbors like it, Dada?” The male tucked a strand behind Jeonghan’s ear. “They definitely will. My sweet baby made all these by himself, who wouldn’t like them?” That got Jeonghan to smile so radiantly that it melted Jihoon’s heart.

He took a step back, stretching his cramped limbs, letting his son marvel over the bags. They had spent a whole afternoon making those, Jihoon felt like he could pass out right here.

It all started one morning when Jeonghan suggested that they should do something to thank Jun, his son and Seungkwan for helping them out of the incident in the mall. They hadn't met again since the park date and this could be an idea.

Mingyu had rang their door with a batch of brownies before and plus, Jihoon and Soonyoung themselves hadn’t made a proper visit to the people in the neighborhood yet. This could be an opportunity for the adults to do so, it’s easy, Jihoon found it to be doable, he had experience in baking and the cookies could serve as a way to initiate conversations.

“Hannie.” Jeonghan perked at the call. “Appa!” Soonyoung smiled, walking toward the kitchen with a sweater in arms.

“Did you two finish?” He asked, looking for Jihoon while simultaneously using one hand to pat his child’s cheek.

"Yeah, you can start the car now." Jihoon took off his apron. "We can put those cookies in the backseat."

Soonyoung nodded. He leaned down to Jeonghan, unfolding the sweater. "Here baby, let me help you put this on."

While Soonyoung helped their child dress, Jihoon gathered the chocolate chip bags into a big basket, making it easier to carry all of them around.

“Did you get your coat, babe?” Soonyoung asked, guiding Jeonghan where the collar was. “It’s alright, we are not going anywhere far.” Jihoon said.

Jeonghan huffed as he was finally able to insert himself into the sweater. "There is an extra one I usually keep in the glove box." Soonyoung carefully straightened out the curled up hems. "It'll be cold later. Take that one."

"Alright alright." Jihoon was quickly down to accept. He didn't want to argue with his husband at this moment.

"Okay. All done." Soonyoung said to the little boy that was warmly dressed.

“So hun, where should we go first?” The blonde heaved a breath, both him and Jeonghan turned to Jihoon in synchronization.

“Let's start with those houses at the beginning of the street and later we can end with Mingyu.”

Soonyoung received it, noting the route down in his mind. Jeonghan got off his standing stool and ran to the sofa to get his bunny that he had roleplayed it to read newspapers which was just a single paper with crayon scribbles, he wanted it to imitate his dad.

"I know you're upset with me." Soonyoung said once Jeonghan was temporarily away, making Jihoon look at him. "But I've promised you and I meant it."

"It's not about that one."

Soonyoung raised a brow. "I'm just a little bothered that you've treated me like I'm a glass doll lately." Jihoon grabbed the basket, being followed by his clueless child to the door in excitement.

He unlocked the car, putting the basket into the backseat and opening the door for Jeonghan to hop in. He patiently waited outside for his husband, who was still behind. He knew he was being too dramatic, but it's against his quote if he's ever cared for things that were too unnecessary. And recently, his husband kept on doing it which was a direct slap to his face.

Soonyoung smiled upon seeing him, planting a kiss on his lips before opening the door for Jihoon. The latter had become more protective since the incident, it's not like he wasn't before, he's only getting more and more now.

But it’s understandable. He knew Soonyoung really meant it when he said he feared nothing to protect this family. It wasn't just a hollow saying, it's a full vow with commitment from Soonyoung.

Jihoon pushed it to the back of his mind, didn't want to think about it furthermore and only focused on the trip. Their trip had proceeded a lot nicer than expected; the people were friendly and kind. Some even gave Jeonghan candies in return and the little omega was on top of the world over the sweets he received.

The boy wanted to share them with his parents, but Jihoon and Sooyoung rather enjoyed him having his simple happiness.

Regarding the hood’s location, the family mainly chose their street to visit and had managed to round all as much as they could. Only Mingyu’s place was left and it was so close, they agreed to walk there. Jihoon went ahead first with Jeonghan while his husband parked the car into the garage, luckily there was also one bag of cookies left.

“Are we visiting Seungkwan this time, Dada?” Jeonghan asked, holding hands with his father. “Yes, baby. Are you excited?”

Jeonghan grinned, confirming Jihoon his glee. He let the boy off once they safely crossed the road, but had to step in when he saw him struggle jumping up and down to ring the bell. Jihoon pressed the bell twice then stepped back beside his son, waiting. It wasn’t long before a click heard and the door slowly creaked.

“Hello?” A tall tanned man greeted them. His face reflected confusion as he glanced between Jihoon and Jeonghan. “How can I help you?”

“Good afternoon sir,” Jeonghan spoke, holding the bag of chocolate chips up. “This one is for you.” The man crouched down, receiving the gift. Although the uncertainty hadn’t left him he still drew a kind smile. “Thank you.”

“Hello, we are your new neighbors. Our family just moved here one week ago. We just took a trip around the area to introduce ourselves and we also prepared some cookies to give everyone." Jihoon explained, as his son nodded along.

“I see, nice to meet you." Mingyu straightened up, smiling. “I’m Mingyu. What's your name?”

“I’m Jihoon. And this is my son J-”

"I'm Jeonghan!" The boy excitedly said his name, making the adult chuckle.

“And I’m Soonyoung.” His husband suddenly showed up from behind and creeped an arm around Jihoon's waist. "He's my husband." The black-haired added.

Mingyu instantly got a quizzical look on his face. He and Soonyoung have already met before, the other probably just didn't remember. His forehead creased then ceased, his brows furrowed then unknotted, and the way his smile gradually became toothy marking that the realization finally grew on him. His mouth was shaped into a big O and Soonyoung gave him a thumbs up as a confirmation.

“Oh. OH! You guys are the family across my house! Gosh I’m so sorry for forgetting you. I was so busy with my pastry shop.” Mingyu skipped. "C’mon in.” He stepped aside, opening the door wide for them.

"Oh, it’s okay. You don't have to."

“Please. I've been waiting for you, my son has been chirping about you so much for the past few days.”

He turned inside the house. “Seungkwan! Come down here! We have guests over!” And he turned back to the family, urging them. “Let's go in. I insist. We have so much to catch up on.”

Jihoon and Soonyoung shared a look, well they had no deadline tonight or papers whatsoever, it would be mean to turn the other’s offer down considering that he was being so friendly. "I hope we aren’t interrupting you.” Soonyoung said, accepting the invite.

“Of course not! Come in.”

Mingyu closed the door behind them, walking into the kitchen to pick up what he was doing when the bell rang. “You want some tea?”

He smiled, fetching two mugs from the rack. “Please have a seat. Make yourself at home.”

Soonyoung carefully pulled the chairs out from under the kitchen table, telling his husband to sit down first. Then he turned to Jeonghan who was standing beside the counter looking around curiously, his fingers tugging on Doljong’s limb while wearing an expression as if he was expecting something.

“Do you want anything, bud?” Mingyu asked, diverting Jeonghan's attention to him and the kid shook his head, big eyes giving off excitement. “Uncle, where’s Seungkwan?”

“Maybe he’s caught up in his game. Let me call for him again, okay?” The man peeked out from the kitchen frame toward the stairs leading to the floor above, gearing up his voice. “Seungkwan ah! Boo Seungkwan!!”

This time they heard a response, high-pitched and muffled, from upstairs. “YES??”

Mingyu winked at Jeonghan as the blonde perked up. If he had a tail and ears right now Soonyoung bet they would even wag. “Your friend is here!!!”

“Huh?” There was a short silence. “I don’t remember inviting any over.”

“They are our new neighbors. You remember uncle Soonyoung?” The said person sat down beside his husband. “He’s here with uncle Jihoon and Jeonghan. C’mon, come down here!! Jeonghan is waiting for you!!”

It ended with the sound of the door shutting, and Mingyu smiled at Jeonghan. “Wait for him okay? He’ll be down soon.” The kid answered with a nod.

The older omega went back to preparing the drinks as Soonyoung and Jihoon called for their child to come over. Jeonghan obediently listened and went to them, leaning his head on Soonyoung’s lap.

“Are you tired?” Jihoon scratched behind Jeonghan’s ear, eliciting purrs from him.

“I’m fine. I wanna play with Seungkwan.”

“Don’t wear yourself out, okay?”

Jeonghan softly hummed. He got up when footsteps were heard stumbling down the stairs, they were hasty and sure were in excitement. The blonde got no chance to react when he was immediately greeted by Seungkwan running up to him and enveloping him in a tight hug.

"Jeonghannie!” Seungkwan exclaimed. “So glad to see you again!”

The boy flusteredly glanced back at his fathers, then back at the one's hugging him, not knowing what to do. Seungkwan tightened his arms, pulling Jeonghan in as much as he could. The sight of two kids hugging was enough to make all the adults that were there melt.

Seungkwan pulled out, smiling at Jeonghan. “Why did you go home so early last time? I didn’t even get to say goodbye to you!” Abruptly he pouted. “I was looking for you everywhere.”

Jeonghan’s face saddened, his bottom lip pulled out into an equal pout. “I’m sorry.”

He looked so sad that Seungkwan’s upset just faded. The other’s arms retreated from around Jeonghan's back to holding his hands, softly murmuring. “It’s fine. Just don’t leave without me next time, okay?”

The blonde nodded, eyelashes casted as he guiltily looked at Seungkwan. “Really? You aren’t angry with me anymore?”

“Yes.”

Jeonghan’s face brightened up almost in an instant. "Thank you. I promise I won’t leave like that again.”

“But why? Were you busy?” Seungkwan tilted his head.

“I was sleepy."

“Oh. Chan was sleeping on Jun too. I got it, don’t worry.” He smiled.

“Seungkwan, why don’t you bring some game to play with Jeonghan?” Mingyu said, placing the two hot tea cups on the table for Soonyoung and Jihoon. “You can play in the living room. The uncles and I will stay here.”

The boy instantly agreed with the idea, pulling Jeonghan along with him to the room across the kitchen. There was a big space behind the couches with a large red carpet in the middle and a few toys lying on it. Jeonghan thought that's probably where Seungkwan's playplace was. “Is there anything you wanna do?”

"I'm fine with everything.” Jeonghan thought for a second before replying.

“Good! Wait for me. I’ll be back.” Seungkwan said and off he went.

Jeonghan sat on the carpet, watching the other excited figure running up the steps followed by Mingyu's instant reprimand. “Yah! I told you not to run on the stairs!!”

The blonde cocked his head to the side, seeing Mingyu sigh heavily and his fathers chuckle at Seungkwan completely ignoring him and already disappearing somewhere.

“That kid never listens to me.” Mingyu turned to Soonyoung and Jihoon, smiling in defeat.

Soonyoung hooked his arm on Jihoon's chair top rail. “Kids are like that, sometimes Jeonghan doesn’t listen to us either.”

“How old is Seungkwan by the way, Mingyu?” Jihoon sipped his tea, asking.

“Already six this year but still very stubborn.” Mingyu shrugged, pulling out his own chair. “What’s about Jeonghan?”

“He’ll be seven in two months.”

“Oh so his birthday is in October?” Jihoon nodded. “I gotta note this down, you’ll have to make it big.” Mingyu said. “Seungkwan will be thrilled to join.”

“We definitely will. We are still new and Jeonghan is still making friends but we’ll make sure to include everyone.”

Mingyu grinned. Then they heard Seungkwan getting down from the stairs, he ran past the adults in the kitchen while carrying a set of legos and putting it down in front of Jeonghan, the blonde looked half excited and half startled at how huge the box was. “Let’s build this together!” The joy was contagious and Jeonghan’s face could be seen lit up.

“Well for sure Jeonghan has already made his first friend here.” Mingy's gaze softened at the sight of two kids being passionate over assembling some blocks. “Seungkwan is a cute baby, can guarantee you as his dad.”

“And we don't doubt you.” Jihoon smiled. "He really is."

“I heard from Seungkwan about your incident. Are you okay now?”

“I am, thanks for asking.” The black-haired nodded.

“Right, Mingyu, do you know who the man named Jun is?” Soonyoung raised a brow. “We wanted to thank him personally but I didn’t know where he lived.”

“I’m sure he’s told you that you’re neighbors, his house is just around here. Unfortunately he’s at work right now so you won’t be able to meet him.” Mingyu gently said, the smile never left his lips. "But I can give you his address."

“That would be so helpful. Thank you."

"What's about his son?” Jihoon took another sip. "I mean, we were wondering if we could also give the little kid something."

“You meant Chan? Oh you can give him anything." Mingyu leaned on his hand. "Jun has a habit of bringing him to his workplace. Only sometimes if there is an important meeting he will bring the kid to my house.”

“You two must be close then?” The blonde wondered.

“Not really. He moved in one year before me and we’re the only ones in town that were the same age so we bond over kinda fast.” A hint of flush flashed over Mingyu’s cheeks and Jihoon and Soonyoung shared a look.

"Hey, why are you looking at me like that?" The male defended himself, but the good blush on his face betrayed him.

Well, the couple probably have discovered a potential loveline in this hood.

• • • • • • • • • • • • •

“Kwannie.”

“Hm?” Seungkwan looked up at Jeonghan.

“Where’s Chan?”

“He’s with uncle Jun.” Seungkwan offered him a sugar cookie from the plate that Mingyu had given earlier. “Isn’t he your brother?”

“No? He’s younger than me but he’s not. My dad and his dad are friends so me and him are also friends.”

“Oooh.” Jeonghan made a little sound.

“What’s that bunny Jeonghannie?” Seungkwan pointed to the ted lying beside the empty lego box.

“He’s my favorite bunny." Jeonghan reached for it and passed it over to Seungkwan. "He's Doljong."

Suddenly he felt tense, looking out for Seungkwan's expression. The bad memories abruptly suffocated him and nervously he watched Seungkwan move the bunny up and down. This was not his first time getting asked about it, someone has already put him in the same spotlight before but one fine reaction was not enough to speak volumes about anything. It's not enough to adjust to the fact he had been mocked so many times.

Yet everything seemed that it would get better for him from here when instead of getting weirded out, the other softly smiled.

“I like him.” Seungkwan patted the top of the bunny head, missing out the shock on Jeonghan's face.

“Eh?” The boy was genuinely taken aback. “Look, his color is pretty, I love everything that has blue in it. Where did you get him?”

“My dad bought it for me.” The blonde received his bunny back, still stuck in surprise. “You don’t hate Doljong?”

“Why would I?” Seungkwan frowned. “He’s cool. Not as cool as my dad of course.”

A timid smile grew on Jeonghan’s face. He just expected a lot of things, both good and bad but mainly bad because that's what he had always seen. But Seungkwan’s reaction was a little out of his prediction, and it worthed even more when it ain’t the weird look people kept giving him.

“Thank you.” The grin he wore was almost blinding and it gave Seungkwan a good flush on his face. "Gosh, why would you thank me?”

The sound of the doorbell ringing suddenly echoed through the house. The kids perked up to look at their parents as the adults glanced at each other. Mingyu stood up, excusing himself to answer the door and Jeonghan stared in awe as his tall figure almost knocked the door frame.

“Your dad is so tall.” Jeonghan whispered.

Seungkwan nodded. “Right? I wish to be as tall as him.”

“You will.”

“Seungkwan.” Seungkwan turned at the sudden call of his name, seeing Mingyu beckoning for him to come.

"Wait for me." He said. Jeonghan patiently sat, wondering what it was but not curious enough to get up and follow the other.

He heard the door close, and was anticipating for Seungkwan to join him back when he noticed there was not only Seungkwan but also someone else behind. Seungkwan called for him and the boy confusedly got on his feets walking toward.

Jeonghan passed by the people near the counter and headed straight for his fathers. He ran into Soonyoung's embrace, breathing in the bitter coffee scent. He was not good with socializing and often got stressed out by that.

"Hannie, why don't you look and see who it is?" Soonyoung softly stroked his back, encouraging the child.

Jeonghan let out a whine, but he still did so, realizing that it wasn’t just one but two strangers, and one of them looked unexpectedly familiar.

“Hi Jeonghan.” The stranger smiled, while Jeonghan stared back in confusion.

“Hannie, you don’t remember him?” Seungkwan said, pointing at the boy. That got Jeonghan’s hazy mind to be even more baffled, he shook his head and heard the adults chuckling.

“Why does he have to take so much from you?” Jihoon glared at Soonyoung and the male shrugged. “Baby, he’s the one who gave you your flower.”

Jeonghan blinked, trying to recall from the deepest of his memories. He looked genuinely confused and Jihoon couldn’t help but sigh.

“Sir, it’s okay.” The boy said, leaving his spot beside Mingyu to approach Jeonghan. He put a hand out and Jeonghan took it, exchanging a handshake. “Hi Jeonghan, I’m Jisoo.”

“Jisoo..?” Jeonghan’s forehead creased at the name. It took moments, before the clog in his mind finally got unknotted and that one specific piece of memories was able to resurface. He let out a loud sound, marking that he was finally able to remember. “Ah right! Jisoo!”

“Finally." Jisoo scoffed.

“I’m so sorry! I forgot you…”

“It’s okay.” Jisoo pulled away from the handshake, turning toward the other person that was beside the counter. “He's my brother.” He said.

The curly haired boy kindly drew a smile as Jisoo passed it to him. "I’m Wonwoo, nice to see you." There was something in his features that resembled Jisoo but they were sharper and less gentle than the said boy, moreover, Jeonghan bet he’s older because Jeonghan had to look up to properly meet his eyes. “Hi Wonwoo, I’m Jeonghan.”

Wonwoo nodded, fixing his glasses. He turned to Mingyu and placed a small jar of jam on the counter. “Thank you so much for the bread, uncle. They were delicious and we enjoyed them a lot."

“You’re welcome.” Mingyu patted his head.

The expression on Wonwoo’s face was fond as he looked at the adult, but it instantly faded when he turned to Jisoo and Jeonghan pretended he didn’t see it. “We have to go now. Maybe next time me and Jisoo can stay for dinner with you.”

“Why don't you just stay a little to play with me, hyung? I miss you so much.” Seungkwan clung onto Wonwoo’s arm. “Jisoo hyung?”

“I would have to say sorry, Kwannie.” Jisoo said.

“Please~? Just a little, please." The boy whined, looking like a kicked puppy. “Hannie is staying too. It'll be more fun to play together.”

Jisoo turned to him and Jeonghan immediately felt like he’s on the spotlight with three pairs of eyes on him. He grabbed his dad’s arm, feeling extremely self-conscious.

As if sensing his distress, Jisoo gently prompted him. “You will be staying too?”

“Yes..”

“Then I guess it’s okay to stay a little.”

Seungkwan’s eyes lit up while Wonwoo’s face subtly faltered. He leaned down, whispering something to Jisoo's ear but the boy merely dismissed it.

“It'll be okay, hyung.” The raven patted his brother's shoulder.

Wonwoo seemed to be contemplating it, like he was thoroughly considering the idea and was apparently against Jisoo’s decision. But surprisingly, he was shortly agreeing to it later even though it seemed like he’s still not fully committing to it.

“Okay. You got your phone right? Give me a call when you wanna go home. I will come pick you up.”

Jisoo hummed as a reply, locking eyes with Jeonghan while Wonwoo was giving his goodbyes to the adults.

“Hyung, can't you stay too?” Seungkwan pouted, making Wonwoo softly pinch his cheek. “I’m sorry Seungkwan. Maybe next time.”

“Go home safe.” Jisoo waved his hand. Mingyu sent him to the entrance with Jisoo and Wonwoo bowed once more, flashing a smile before he disappeared behind the door.

“Seungkwan, why don’t you tell Jisoo what you were playing with Jeonghan? Me and the uncles still have a lot to talk about.” Mingyu suggested, heading back to his seat in the kitchen while Seungkwan excitedly urged the two boys to the living room.

“Wait for me! I'll be right back!” Then Seungkwan left.

Jeonghan sat down on the carpet, cocooning way more into his personal space as Jisoo stared at him. “May I sit here?” He said, pointing to the space beside Jeonghan and the blonde flusteredly nodded.

Jisoo sat down, leaning on his arm. “I was wondering," Jeonghan looked at him. "Are you sure you remembered me?”

“Yes.” The blonde frowned. “Don’t you believe me?”

“I do. But not too much.” The raven shrugged, his scent smelling sweet. “Where’s your bunny?”

“Oh, he’s here.” Jeonghan picked the said bunny lying on the ground, but quickly raised a brow at the other. “Wait, you remembered him?”

“Why not? I remembered you Jeonghan.”

Jeonghan instantly felt horrid guilty, his shoulders slumped down and Jisoo could see it. “I’m really sorry for forgetting you.” He mumbled in embarrassment. Great, how could he even forget someone who’s so kind like that?

“It’s alright.” He heard Jisoo sigh.

“But- but I’m really thankful for the flower!" Jeonghan beat the boy to it before he could even say anything. "Really!!"

“You still keep it?” Somehow, Jisoo looked genuinely surprised.

“Of course!! You gave it to me! It’s so beautiful! I will even plant it in my garden!” Jeonghan enthusiastically skipped, invading Jisoo's personal space without noticing.

The raven was taken aback by the sudden eagerness from the boy in front of him. They stayed like that for a moment, with the adults’ lively talking in the background while Jisoo caught glimpses of his reflection in Jeonghan's big eyes. It was not until he heard Seungkwan’s calling for them that the blonde broke their lock and turned away, slipping the sight of Jisoo’s ears tinted pink at their tips out of the corners of his eyes.

“Guys!!” Seungkwan stood in front of them, his face brightened up like a little sun. But it shifted to confusion when he looked between Jeonghan and Jisoo, being oblivious to the tension Jisoo exuded. “What’s wrong?”

“It’s nothing.” Jisoo shook his head. Jeonghan looked at him briefly, an expression of concern on his face. “So what’s the game, Kwannie?”

He diverted the topic, and Seungkwan immediately followed along. The boy’s cheerful expression returned, excitedly explaining to them about the concept.

And while at it, Jeonghan turned to him, whispering in his small voice. “Let’s play together, okay?”

Jisoo only looked.

Something inside him felt like it was churning, being twisted in many ways, with a crippling sense of pain squeezing his heart, throbbing it. Nevertheless, he drew a smile, the gentlest one as he could.

“Yes, let’s play.”

Chapter Text

“Master.”

Jisoo blinked, eyes diverting from the floor to Wonwoo standing beside him with a concerned expression.

“Sir, you weren't listening. Again.” The woman adjusted her glasses with an exasperated sigh. “We can discuss the issue on another day if you want. Pardon me for saying this but you have not seemed to be interested even just once for today." Said she, as she gathered stacks of papers on the desk into her arms.

“Are you okay, master?” Wonwoo asked cautiously, being mindful upon seeing his boss today was unusual. Like, zoning out too many times, different from his daily collected manner.

Yet the said master just casually repositioned his posture, leaning his arm on the armrest and flicking his wrist to which people immediately understood.

“Then, I will take my leave from here, master Hong." The woman bowed gracefully. "Always my bestest wishes to you.” Before bringing herself to exit the room with all the papers that were supposed to be approved by Jisoo for today.

The raven took a deep breath, finally filling his inside with some air; because something has been squeezing his gut since the morning.

Not in a rough way, but enough that Jisoo hardly found himself listening to whatever came out from the woman's mouth.

“Is it something personal, sir?” He looked up to Wonwoo leaning down to him.

“I would not let anything personal bother me, Wonwoo.”

“Then am I allowed to ask? Because you today are not like usual and as your assistant, I believe I at least have the right to know what is upsetting my master.”

“You really know your way with words.” The raven smiled. And at the compliment Wonwoo also couldn’t hide his pride. “Just something silly that has been sitting in my stomach.”

“I see, do you want me to reschedule the afternoon’s meetings to another day?”

Jisoo considered the option for a second, it’s not like he would really be paying attention if whatever was bothering him right now couldn’t be dissolved. It gave him a feeling that the boy himself just did not know how to explain it, nor how to find an explanation.

“Move all of them to tomorrow.” He finally concluded. “I want to take a rest today.”

“Right away, sir.” Wonwoo complied. He drew out his phone from his pocket and excused to be away to make calls.

Upon receiving the permission, Wonwoo gently left the room, letting Jisoo have his short break of peace. Jisoo took a deep breath, before uncrossing his legs and pushing himself off the leather chair; he wanted to soothe the throb somehow.

It’s not even a constant pain, and that’s why it’s so irritating.

He glanced at the paper on his table, rolling eyes at the list of things his father wanted him to do for today. Jisoo rubbed his temples, at least he didn't have to meet him, those lists just kept going on and on with no end.

He untied the tie around his collar, throwing it on the chair. His gut suddenly throbbed and that caused the alpha to hiss out of annoyance.

"Master?" Wonwoo peeked in, slightly startled at Jisoo turning to him with red eyes. "I've rescheduled the meetings for this afternoon to tomorrow." The curly haired shut the door by his feet.

"Well done."

"Sir."

He raised a brow, watching Wonwoo laying down a chocolate bar on the table.

"What's that?" Asked him, but not caring enough for an answer.

"Lady gave it to me in the hallway." Wonwoo replied.

“Tia?”

“Yes sir.”

Jisoo gently fixed his suit.

“Which direction did she come from?”

“Not from your father’s wing, sir.”

“I see.” He passed by the table, eyeing the bar. “Was there anyone escorting her?”

“Yes, two guards were by her side.”

The raven hummed. He picked up the chocolate bar on the surface, checking it over; it had already melted at the top, some parts could even be felt broken off. And normally Jisoo didn’t have the appetite for sweets but his sister’s was the only exception.

“Is this lavender?”

“Yes. It’s the brand with almond toppings I believe.” Wonwoo added. “Lady has always loved it.”

Jisoo again hummed and looked over it once again, before putting it back on the table. “Mentioning lavender,” the flavor reminded him of someone, oddly, he knew. It somehow just linked perfectly. “How’s Jeonghan?”

Wonwoo gave him a surprised look. “Well..” But he quickly regained his composure. “From what I know, Seungkwan tells me he’s sick these days.”

“Is it serious?”

“I didn’t hear about it exactly, but probably a seasonal fever, sir.”

Jisoo rubbed his chin. The silence filled the room in a second; he’s thinking, and Wonwoo knew better not to interrupt it.

“Then,” finally, he said, after finishing gathering his thoughts. “It’s been 4 days.” The raven took off his outside vest, making his outfit seem more casual. “Let’s give him a visit.”

“Sir!” Wonwoo immediately jumped, and the expression on Jisoo’s face wasted no chance in shifting as if sensing the strong disagreement from the other. “We can’t do that.”

“Hm?”

The annoyance gradually became vivid in Jisoo’s scent. He’s not quite an expressive kid, obviously, but that doesn’t apply to his pheromones; they are reactive, dominant, and are an efficient way for people around him to learn how to behave.

The young assistant swallowed his saliva as trying to explain to Jisoo. No matter their ages or origins, the chosen individual of a pack was no joke.

“The boss won’t be happy to hear about it.” Wonwoo reasoned.

“You’re under me Wonwoo.” The alpha smiled. “Father’s punishment is the first thing you should not worry about.”

“I understand, sir. But under no circumstances should we be allowed to leave the house without the boss’s permission; it’s an unbreaking rule. And his anger is something I would not dare-.”

Before Wonwoo could finish, the smile on Jisoo’s face just turned into the most devilish smirk Wonwoo had ever seen.

The alpha’s scent intensified, at the same time it also exuded more dominance and the tiniest hint of sneer. It only got worse; Wonwoo’s sensitive nose could pick up from that alone.

“I think you’ve misunderstood me, Jeon Wonwoo.” Jisoo fully faced him, with his hands dipped in his pockets. That also caused Wonwoo to instinctively straighten up and rush to build up his scent as a survival method.

“Since when did you have the courage to think of this Hong Jisoo,” he put a hand on his chest. “As a dog on leash?”

“I-”

One glare and Wonwoo immediately shut his mouth.

“Let me remind you, Wonwoo.” Jisoo took a step forward, his face still plastered with a smile. “The one that you should be afraid of should not be a man that foolishly believes he’s the only one claiming the throne.”

A bead of sweat dropped from Wonwoo’s chin as Jisoo’s eyes beamed red.

“And you, regarding as a god-sent genius, should know the place where your words spit.”

Everything dropped cold inside the poor room. The pressure was heavy, unnerving, suffocated with the power exuded from an alpha, who was baring his fangs, showing his territory and castigating the other individual for being unwise to cross his boundary.

“Now, and not even in the future does anyone have the right to allow me. I am the one with the claws. I am the one with the crown.” Jisoo gritted his teeth. “I am under no one.”

The curly haired sealed his mouth, with all wills trying to withstand the rage that was unfolding. No doubt, Wonwoo still valued his life as much. He knew the moment he let out even just a letter Jisoo would not hesitate to unalive him, he never was.

Wonwoo dropped on his bum, his legs shook due to the overwhelm, his alpha cower to protect and his eyes could only glue to Jisoo’s red eyes glow like a bloody moon, like the last resort to beg for sympathy.

As if being merciful to the fear his assistant was suffering, the scent began to subside. Jisoo took a step back, began to put on the calmness he usually masked.

“As my assistant, you disappointed me.” The alpha sighed, back to being sweet as if nothing had just happened just now. “I thought you would know me better, but it seems like you are just that. Smart, but still an ignorant spawn.”

Jisoo turned around and Wonwoo finally felt like he could breathe again. The boy's head instantly slumped down, desperately grasping all the air his lungs could take in; breathe in, breathe out, sweat wet the top he was wearing and pupils violently shaken.

He grabbed his shirt, crumbling the hem of it. His breaths shorted and rushed. It’s a miracle he was still intact.

“Wonwoo.”

The boy immediately looked up at his name.

“I’ll give you 10 minutes.”

“Yes?-”

“Set up the car.” Jisoo scrunched his nose. “Go.”

With that Wonwoo hurriedly got up. “Ye-Yes sir!!” His legs wobbled as his weak attempt tried to stand.

Jisoo hummed nonchalantly as Wonwoo rushed out. The raven dipped his hands in his pockets, heaving a deep sigh.

Things were getting a lil too comfortable on his nerves these days, so many people had to be reminded of their places. It took him by wonder how those really thought they could still make a way out after saying the most goofiest and ridiculous things to Jisoo’s face.

But again, he’s not like that to everyone. He also had his soft spots.

But only for his sister.

“NO!”

Soonyoung chased Jeonghan down the stairs, with the kid holding dear onto his bunny while bawling his eyes out.

“Hannie!”

Jeonghan frantically shook his head, skipping the last two steps of the stairs and almost tripping, but he got on his feet in an instant and ran past Jihoon in the kitchen.

“Gosh dammit!” Soonyoung cursed, having his hands on his knees, trying to take his breaths.

“What’s going on?” Jihoon asked. He closed the door to the oven before approaching Soonyoung.

The blonde pushed back his bang that was dampened with sweat. “Jeonghan is having a fever, Hoon.”

“Again?” Jihoon raised a brow. “I thought it died down already.”

“Unfortunately, that’s what we all thought.” Soonyoung fetched from his pocket a tablet in which the pills were still inside. “He is refusing to take them.”

“Because they’re too bitter?”

Soonyoung nodded.

“I wonder if I have indulged him so much so now he only has those sweet teeth.” Jihoon internally facepalmed himself. “So what you two were doing just now was the chase?”

“You know how hard it is to convince him to take just even one of these.” Soonyoung rolled his eyes. “And don’t make me come to the other ones.”

“Yeah, gosh, don’t remind me. It was war just a day ago.”

Soonyoung sighed, exasperatedly.

The two adults shared a look with each other, they all knew how tiresome this would be. Jeonghan is only 7 now, they still had a few more years to go before his heat period could regulate normally as a grown-up omega, but this alone was draining enough.

“Baby-!” Jihoon tried.

“NO!” The kid shouted back in full protest. Jihoon peered outside through the window to see where his son was and managed to catch a glimpse of a blonde behind the newly-built sandbox. Poor Jeonghan thought that that blinding hair of his wouldn’t stand out.

“Target spotted.” Jihoon smiled, pointing it out to Soonyoung. The other looked in the direction and grinned once he finally saw it. “Let’s go.” The black-haired nodded.

Soonyoung opened the door to the backyard with his husband just behind. They carefully approached the boy that was still in his bunny onesie, Jeonghan was having his back on them and he’s deemed to not be aware of their presence. Soonyoung put a finger to his mouth, then started to count down from three.

3
2
And… 1!! “Gotcha!” Jeonghan yelped in surprise when being picked up. “Got the little bunny.”

“Appa??”

Soonyoung fell back on his bum with the kid close to his chest, he squished the chubby cheeks against his own.

“UGH!” Jeonghan annoyingly squirmed. “Let me go!” He tried to make his way out of Soonyoung’s arms.

“Uh oh.” The adult tightened his grasp. “Not that easy my boy.”

Soonyoung fetched the tablet out from his pocket and at the sight Jeonghan immediately wailed.

“Baby.” Jihoon crouched down to his son’s eyes level, attempting to soothe him while his husband struggled to hold him down. “Can you drink them for me?”

The blonde shook his head, his face was red due to the fever with snots streaming down from his nose. “NO!! I don’t want to!” Sweet mixed with bitter scent painfully exuded.

“I promise it will be quick.” Jihoon tried. “See? Here.” He took the tablet from Soonyoung and popped out a capsule.

“NO!! NO!” But that only led to Jeonghan’s tantrum getting worse. “I DON'T WANT IT! PLEASE!”

“Hannie-”

“NO!! No. Please…” Jeonghan pleaded, his cry ceased to heartbroken sobs and he kept shaking his head. “Appa, please. I don’t want to drink it. I can’t drink it…”

The adults shared a look, their expression mirrored each other with lots of confusion and fluster. Jeonghan had never reacted this badly to suppressant before; sure he did cry but pleading was just not it.

The kid crept into Soonyoung’s arms, hiding himself away and his scent completely shifted sour like rotten fruit.

They were so conflicted: would it be safe to let him be without suppressant? He’s having terrible responses and was nowhere near willing to accept it, and they couldn’t just force him to do something he took so much hate in!

Had it faked, or true, they had no idea. The parents didn’t know where it came from, because this was the first time Jeonghan’s reaction to suppressants was this worse and it was a direct throb to their hearts.

…….

"Alright." Then, after so much thought. “Hannie.”

Soonyoung embraced him, planting a kiss on the crown of his head. Jihoon threw away the capsule and hid the tablet in his pocket.

“It’s okay, you don’t have to drink it if you don’t want to.” Even if it’s not safe for him, Jeonghan’s mental health meant more.

That’s almost like a way out for the kid’s distress. Jihoon caressed his back and his smile drew in relief as Jeonghan relaxed into the touch, sour scent also lightened slightly but his cry was still gut-wrenching.

“Re-really?” Through sobs, he asked. “I don’t have to drink it?"

“Yes.” Soonyoung confirmed.

“You don’t want to do it right?” Jihoon repeated gently. “Then you don’t have to.”

Jeonghan’s face slightly brightened up.

“Let’s go in, okay?” The blonde nudged his husband. “Your dad was making you some cake inside the house. Let’s go have it.”

The kid let out an excited sound and clung onto Soonyoung as the man brought him up. His eyes glistened with tears yet now it’s more like a form of glee instead of sadness.

Jihoon slightly furrowed his brows. He knew the decision was already made but he still held some doubts, like, how much of the reaction was true? All of a sudden Jeonghan reacted badly like that? What actually triggered him this time when it didn’t for the others? Nothing really made sense…

“Dada.” Jeonghan called and the man looked up, not realizing he was still in the backyard. The kid waved at him and Soonyoung smiled at him softly.

It was an adorable sight to say the least. His gut twitched and defeatedly he heaved out a sigh, guess that could be another problem for another day.

Soonyoung stretched his limbs, moving them in an attempt to undo all the strain weighted down his muscles.

He had snuck out to finish cleaning the rest of the mess in their garage earlier, he had procrastinated doing it since yesterday and it’s not good to just leave it sitting there untouched. And he's not a sweet tooth so he didn’t mind not getting a slice of cake.

He picked up the stack of old floated tires and carried them to the front yard, dropping them down near the mailbox. Then went back for the carton boxes and also dropped them beside the stack. He checked his watch; the social workers should come to pick them up anytime soon.

He’s about to head inside when, from afar, he saw a sleek black car parked into the neighborhood. It’s extraordinary, the car looked too uncommon; it’s like one of those you usually see in a grand business event.

Soonyoung stayed out, wanting to see who’s the owner of the odd. He saw the door open, then a short moment before his brows raised in surprise to see a kid exit the car. And it added more to his confusion when the kid began to walk in his direction and as he stopped just in front of Soonyoung, the man’s eyes widened like saucers.

“Good afternoon, uncle Soonyoung.” The kid’s doe eyes shaped like crescents as he smiled. “Nice to meet you again.”

“Oh. Hi Jisoo.” Soonyoung awkwardly reciprocated. “Good afternoon to you too.” He’s still caught up with his questions about the car, sure a kid wouldn’t be able to afford that right?

Jisoo just stared at him.

“My older brother always loves his car.” The man startled as the kid suddenly said. “Your older brother?” Soonyoung saw him looking in the direction of the said car that it’s already gone.

“Yes.” Jisoo slowly turned to him. “He’s older than me and Wonwoo. His hobby has been collecting cars since young.”

“I see.” The blonde rubbed his nape. Something was still off but the adult could not explain what it was.

“Then, can I come in?”

Suddenly Soonyoung was reminded that he and the kid were standing outside beside stacks of garbage instead of somewhere better to have a conversation.

“Oh right, my bad. C'mon little man.” Soonyoung grinned. “You must be here for Jeonghan right? He’s in the kitchen with my husband. Let me call him, okay?”

Jisoo just smiled.

“Appa!” Soonyoung got greeted once he stepped inside. Jeonghan in his bunny onesie ran up to him and Jihoon peeked out from the kitchen to see who it was.

Soonyoung opened his arms, about to hug his excited son but the kid suddenly stopped just before reaching the man. His cheerful expression changed toward cautious and too his scent gave off confusion. Damn Soonyoung really forgot there was another presence in the house.

“Oh right Hannie.” He stepped aside. “Your friend is over.”

“Hello Jeonghan.” Jisoo went out from behind the adult, eyes smiling and scent purred sweet as he saw Jeonghan. “Do you remember me?”

Soonyoung looked at his child, seeing the caution on his face turning to fluster with a hint of excitement. Jeonghan was probably still shy. But then the adult honestly wondered, was Jisoo always this easy to get close to? Because when he first met him, the kid wasn’t exactly…welcoming.

“Jisoo?” Jeonghan approached the other, a smile slowly blooming on his lips.

“That’s me.”

Soonyoung watched Jisoo’s face softly light up as Jeonghan stood in front of him. That got the adult to frown but he decided to just leave it that way. He stayed on the spot, listening to the kids’ hearty conversation and casually wrapping an arm around his husband when Jihoon approached him.

“We have a visitor?” Asked he.

“Yeah.” Soonyoung pecked on Jihoon’s cheek. “We met when I was cleaning our garage.”

“Did he come with his brother?” The blonde shrugged. “Technically, yes."

Jihoon frowned. "What do you-" Soonyoung leaned down and sealed Jihoon’s lips with a kiss before he could finish.

“Hey.” Jihoon pinched the other’s waist. "The kids are here." He sided-eye Soonyoung as the male pouted. “Just a lil.”

“No.” The black haired flicked the pouting lips. “Don’t make me kick your ass.”

Jihoon rolled his eyes and turned away when Soonyoung whined. But he was met with two anticipating faces right at the moment he looked.

“Hey..?” Jihoon flusteredly said and that grabbed Soonyoung’s attention too.

The two kids just stared at them. Jeonghan narrowed his eyes and Jisoo, well, just smiled.

“We saw it all.” The blonde pointed an accused finger at them.

“Hannie-”

Jeonghan stuck his tongue out and covered his ears. “I can’t hear you.” The kid could be really stubborn if he wanted to. Jihoon heaved a sigh and glared at his husband, he knew he could not say anything to convince Jeonghan off of his obstinacy. “How many times have I told you not to be touchy in front of the kid you stupid?”

Soonyoung's lips were fully pouted; objecting to it but not really denying.

“Anyway, um, do you want anything?” Jihoon awkwardly asked, hoping to deviate the kids’ attention. “Hannie, why don’t you and Jisoo go play in your room? Me and your dad will stay down here if you two need anything.”

He suggested and his husband instantly raised a brow at him.

“Hoon, but he-” Jihoon quickly reassured. “It’s okay. We gotta let him have time with his friend.” But that didn’t help to cease the knot on Soonyoung’s brows.

Jisoo only nodded, and followed along when Jeonghan led him. The kids went upstairs together while Soonyoung and Jihoon stayed down, the blonde watched them talking and occasionally laughing before them disappearing from his sight.

“Babe.” Jihoon turned at the call. Soonyoung was having a concerned expression and did not intend to hide it when his husband looked at him. “It’s not safe to let them be. Jeonghan is in heat.”

“I know.”

Soonyoung’s face scrunched even more. “And Jisoo is an alpha. Maybe right now he doesn’t show any sign of a typical one but that doesn’t mean it’s okay to leave them alone together.”

“Soon-” He continued before Jihoon could say. “This is not right. We shouldn’t allow this. What if something happens? I need to-”

“Soonyoung.” Jihoon sternly called and that made the said male drop his trance to look up at him. “I understand your worries, but you’ll have to understand that they're only kids. Right now their hormones aren’t that strong to actually produce any sexual want. Kids, Soonyoung. Their systems aren’t well-developed to really harm people. Besides,” Jihoon took a deep breath. “Their secondary genders don’t define who they really are.”

That caused Soonyoung to think. The distress on his face has yet to cease or worse, it only intensified.

“Soonie.” Jihoon gently cupped the male’s face. “It’ll be okay.”

A short silence. Jihoon continued. “Me and you will always protect Jeonghan together, okay? Might Jisoo not be so friendly to us, but at least as of right now he is one of the kindest friends to our son that we know.”

“I see.” Soonyoung muttered. “But I just can’t help it.”

Jihoon smiled softly, planting a kiss on his husband’s nose. “I guess we are all worried freaks, eh?” And that made the other crack up.

“It ain’t wrong tho. We both are.”

“Here it is.” Jeonghan opened the door to his room. “Come in.” He smiled as he turned back to Jisoo.

The raven slowly followed behind, being cautious in his steps. But why all of a sudden? Jeonghan wondered.

“Oh.” Jisoo let out a small sound when he walked past the door’s post and stopped. “So this is your room?”

“Yes.” Jeonghan nodded. “What do you think about it?”

Jisoo took his time and Jeonghan stopped to look at him, waiting for his opinion.

“It really suits you.” The blonde raised his brows. “Why do you say so?”

“I don’t know, I just feel like it.”

Jeonghan gave him a quizzical look. The raven could only reply to him with a shrug of shoulders and did not provide him with further explanation about his comment.

“You’re always so mysterious, Jisoo.” Jeonghan pouted. “You never tell me anything.”

Jisoo only smiled. He stood still at the door post while Jeonghan went looking for his stuffed rabbit.

“Jisoo?” The blonde called. “Can you please shut the door for me? And please just come in.”

He listened, closing the door as requested. The other absent-mindedly slipped out a yawn as Jisoo was approaching him.

“Are you sleepy?” He asked.

Jeonghan hummed. “Yeah, but not really.” Then he grinned. “Why don’t we play something? You’re here to play with me right?” He pointed to his playbox near the desk. “What do you usually do? I don’t have many interesting games.”

“Nothing.” Jisoo shook his head.

“Really?” The blonde was taken aback. “So you don’t play?”

Jisoo nodded.

“I- that’s sad.” Jeonghan said, his grip on his bunny tightened. “You must feel very bored.”

“It’s okay.” Jisoo noticed the drastic escalation in the atmosphere and was quick to reassure the boy. “I don’t usually play so it’s completely okay. You don’t have to feel sad for me.”

“But-” Jisoo gently smiled. “It’s alright. I don’t mind.”

Jeonghan bit his lips, his face showing that he didn’t buy it and was really actually feeling upset over what Jisoo had said. “I- What can I do for you tho? I can give you any toy I have that you want. I really want to make it up for you.”

The expression on Jeonghan’s face was pure sympathy as he looked at Jisoo. Little did he know that as Jeonghan thought of Jisoo as an ordinary friend, the boy was never really one. It honestly amused Jisoo with how Jeonghan acted but he hid it and behaved like how the Jisoo the blonde had known would do.

“I told you it’s fine. I don’t care.” Jisoo frowned. “If anything you want to help me with is, I want you to take a rest.”

“Me? Taking a rest?” Jeonghan said. “But I’m okay?”

“Seungkwan told me you were sick for the past days so he couldn't come to play with you. And honestly, I could feel that from your scent too.”

“What? How do I smell right now?”

“Bitter.” Jeonghan instantly frowned.

“It’s alright.” Jisoo subtly exuded a soothing aroma into the room when he felt Jeonghan was getting distressed again. “Let’s rest, okay?”

The blonde nodded, he sat on the bed while holding his stuffed bunny, obviously was still upset and bothered. He slipped another yawn and Jisoo smiled at him.

“Sorry, you are here to play but can’t just because of me.” Jeonghan’s eyes were glistening when he talked. He was feeling terrible for wasting Jisoo’s time. “But what does my resting do any good for you? You wouldn't be able to play.”

“Jeonghan, I’m here mainly to visit you. If you’re not feeling fine then I should be the one to help you, not forcing you to entertain me.” The raven strictly said. “You don’t have to worry about me.”

Jeonghan pouted, but begrudgingly listened when Jisoo’s eyes twinkle as if he was insisting on him. He lay down on the bed, eyes blinking sleepily the moment his face hit the pillow. Being in heat did drain his energy faster than normal even though he had done nothing tiring today.

“Are you going home, Jisoo?”

The boy shook his head. “I’ll be staying with you for the afternoon, is it okay?”

Jeonghan nodded, rubbing his eyes tiredly. “Jisoo.” He patted on the space beside him on the bed. “Lie down with me.”

Jisoo’s eyes widened.

“What’s wrong?” The blonde curiously asked upon seeing the other’s abrupt change in attitude.

“No, it’s fine.” Jisoo calmly replied. “I was just surprised.”

Jeonghan hummed, patting on the place again, seeming to not easily put his offer away. “It’s okay, you can rest here. I don’t mind.”

“It’s alright. I’m not feeling tired. You should take a rest first.”

“Then just sit down somewhere, please.” The blonde insisted. “You’re my friend, Jisoo. Please make yourself comfortable.”

“Okay.” Jisoo bit his lips. He patted on the edge of the bed, carefully asking. “Can I sit here?”

‘“Yes, please.”

Jeonghan cutely grinned at Jisoo finally sitting down. He didn’t understand why Jisoo has always acted so carefully with everyone, even when they’re playing with Seungkwan the other day, Jisoo didn’t even let his guard down just once.

His eyes began to close out of sleepiness, another yawn and finally, he relaxed, letting sleep come to him naturally.

• • • • • • • • • • • • •

Jisoo took a deep breath. His scent stayed quenched not wanting to disrupt the blonde’s sleep. Alphas in general had extreme scents and he was no exception.

He looked at Jeonghan, listening to the blonde’s even breaths.

If there’s anything to describe what he felt toward Jeonghan, it would definitely not involve anything like affection.

Something along with hate would do.

Jisoo stood up, and without looking back.

He left.

Notes:

for anyone wondered why Jisoo didn't notice that Jeonghan was literally wearing a onesie while greeting him, basically he just didn't care.

Chapter Text

Time passed by quickly, and soon it’s the end of August. Summer break was over and we all knew what that meant.

It’s time for school!

“Jeonghan ah! Are you excited for school?”

The parents seemed to be thrilled, well how would they not be when they’ve prepared it since moving here. Also, they wanted Jeonghan to have a proper education since they themselves didn’t get one.

Obviously, not everyone liked school.

“No.”

Especially the child.

Jeonghan crossed his arms in the backseat, huffing out loud and brows furrowed.

“Can I just stay home instead?”

“You’ll be okay baby, school will be fun.” Soonyoung smiled from his seat, twirling the wheel taking a corner turn.

“I bet.” Jeonghan snorted. He looked outside to see the school gate coming into view.

“Don’t be like that Hannie.” Jihoon softly reprimanded. “I remember you used to tell me you love school, why change now?”

“I was young, and naive!” The kid raised his arms in frustration, who taught him the word naive? “I hate school! Ever!’

Jihoon sighed. He turned to his husband and said, defeatedly. “Are kids always like that?”

Soonyoung quirked a brow. “How do I know? You said it like I’ve had one before.”

“Think you should. Didn’t you lead a team of brats and snots?”

“It was so long ago, gosh.” Soonyoung said incredulously. “Now I only lead you and that lil tantrum over there.”

The car jumped slightly as he parked. The blonde twisted off the key and stepped out to the backseat to get his child while Jihoon closed the door on his side, patting the roof as he stood.

“We should get the car checked sometimes.”

“I think it’s still good.” Soonyoung shrugged while putting his hand out for his grumpy kid. “C’mon baby.”

Jeonghan only looked at him, lips pouting and turning away.

“Yeah so good, it almost jumps like a freaking grasshopper when you park.” Jihoon scoffed.

“It’s an extra feature you see.” Soonyoung slightly frowned. “Jeonghan.” He sternly called. “Come here.”

The child still has not looked back but instead turned his whole body around facing his back to Soonyoung.

The adult sighed.

“What’s wrong?” Jihoon asked.

Soonyoung climbed into the car and wrapped his arms around Jeonghan picking him up, the kid didn’t fight back and just let himself get carried out of the car grumpily.

“Hannie is not being a good kid right now, Hoon.” Soonyoung lowered Jeonghan down on the road. The kid huffed at his dad’s saying.

“It’s because school is bad!”

“Alright alright.” The parents looked at each other, Jeonghan was a stubborn little fellow and it’s never easy to get him off his obstinacy. Not even them, his parents, could do it. Probably because they have always spoiled him and now it’s the fruit of what they nurtured.

“Jeonghannie,” Jihoon started. “Do you want both of us to come with you or do you want to choose only one of us?”

The boy seemed like he’s deeply thinking about the offer over and over, and finally, as if he’s accepted his fate that he could not escape school. He heaved a heavy sigh and looked up at them, putting his hands out.

“Can both Dada and Appa come with me, please?”

His parents softly gazed at him and Soonyoung leaned down to take the small hand into his. He patted Jeonghan’s hair and smiled. “Okay baby.”

Jihoon walked around and took Jeonghan’s other hand. “Lock the car first, Soon.” He held the kid’s hand tenderly as Soonyoung did as he said.

“Done.” And grinned when he finished.

Jihoon let go of the kid’s hand when they arrived at his class. It’s almost time, and it was the start of the semester so everything and everyone was so lively. He looked around and saw a lady standing amidst the classroom. She was busy with the amount of kids and their parents around her and was guiding them around effortlessly, yet when she saw them at the door, she immediately excused herself and came to welcome them.

“Good morning sir, I’m Mimi, 2nd grade teacher.” She lent out her hand for a handshake, smiling. “Nice to see you. I believe we’ve met in the principal office before.”

Jihoon took the gesture. “Nice to meet you too, Mimi.”

“Hello buddy,” Mimi waved her hand at Jeonghan and the kid quickly hid behind Soonyoung’s legs.

“Sorry, he’s a little shy.” Soonyoung explained.

“It’s okay, sir.” The lady placated. “He must be the new transfer student that the principal has told.”

“Definitely.” Jihoon confirmed. He turned to Jeonghan and the boy hid even more behind his husband, his fingers clung on Soonyoung’s pants. “Hannie.”

The said kid just stared at him, his eyes widened as big as ever and they were glistening with panic.

“Hello buddy, I’m Mimi.” The lady repeated. “Can you tell me what’s your name?” She added, a sweet smile blooming on her lips.

Soonyoung guided the kid from where he was hiding to lead him to stand in front of Mimi, encouraging him. “Can you say hi to your teacher, baby?”

Jeonghan fidgeted, his eyes glancing up and down and Jihoon could literally see him shaking. The adult crouched down next to Jeonghan and put his arm around the kid.

“It’s okay Hannie, Dada is here.” He whispered to him. “Just a simple hi to your teacher for me?”

Jeonghan shyly nodded. Jihoon knew he didn’t really buy it but was glad that the boy would still listen to him. He looked at the teacher and spoke, timidly. “H-Hello ma’am, I- uh, I’m Jeonghan.” Mimi instantly brightened up. “Nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you too buddy!” She chirped.

Suddenly the bell rang.

“I think it’s time for us to go.” Jihoon said. “We will come back later in the afternoon to pick him up.”

Jeonghan’s pupils were slightly shaken as he heard so. Jihoon leaned down and patted his hair gently. “Have fun at school, baby. You will be okay, we love you.” Then he pecked on the child’s cheek. But Jeonghan said nothing in return, just staring, silently staring.

He didn’t know if the kid was too scared to say something, or he just didn’t want to say anything.

“We’ll be going now Hannie. See you later, okay?” Soonyoung winked and raised a thumb up.

Jeonghan nodded and he waved goodbye to his dads. Still being silent the whole time, and maybe, a little scared.

The adults reluctantly walked away. Jihoon kept glancing back at the boy until Mimi led him into class and only then he could finally turn around.

“You think he will be alright?” Soonyoung said what was on Jihoon's mind also.

“We just have to trust him, Soon.” He sighed. “I hope he will.”

• • • • • • • • • • • • •

Maybe he wouldn’t.

Jihoon glanced at his child through the rear-view mirror. He came to pick up Jeonghan with a heart of hope and anticipation, wanting to know how his day was and how he felt and was so ready to hear all about it, however, in return all he received was silence: the kid was silent the whole time, he didn’t even answer Jihoon when he asked.

To be honest, he didn’t really expect much since he knew how Jeonghan was this morning, but this was off and far-away of what he had imagined.

The whole drive home was literally so intense, Jihoon has never felt this kind of intense before, not with Jeonghan.

“Hannie,” He tried. Maybe, maybe he just imagined things. Surely it’s impossible to get anywhere near the phrase “intense” when you’re with Jeonghan, yeah? “How was school today?”

The said kid didn’t even look up at him, he just kept staring at his own shoes and Jihoon waited for a few minutes to conclude that he’s not going to get an answer any time soon.

This was bad. Or worse. He didn’t know how to describe it but definitely not anything that went with good.

Gosh, Jihoon wished Soonyoung was here. Unfortunately his husband was at work, if he was here maybe the man would know what to say, he’s better at words than Jihoon though.

He parked the car in front of their home, it wasn’t that long of a ride, the school wasn’t that far from their home but they were the longest minutes to ever last in Jihoon’s life, he couldn’t even get any word out because the situation was nowhere near what he had grown accustomed to.

“Jeonghan-”

The kid didn’t wait for Jihoon when he quickly opened the backseat door and jumped out of the car. He reached the door and stood there waiting for him to come up.

Jihoon sighed. He just hoped that the kid wasn’t pissed, he wouldn’t know how to deal with a pissed Jeonghan.

Inserting the key, Jihoon locked the car before walking over to his front door. He reached for the door and twisted it open with a soft click, Jeonghan was the one to get in first and he rushed up the stairs while Jihoon just only flicked on the light.

He knew something was wrong, definitely. Sure he has seen Jeonghan acting distance before but it’s not like he has gotten used to it. Getting used to it would be dangerous though, it would mean he normalized whenever his kid felt upset without asking further.

He followed the kid upstairs, he knew Jeonghan would be in his room, it’s his safe sanctuary after all. Knocking the door twice, and he prompted. “Hannie, can Dada come in?”

No response.

Jihoon hesitated for a moment, until he decided that he should take the initiative now because Jeonghan was not going to. “I’m coming in.” He creaked the door open slightly.

He saw Jeonghan lying down on his side on his bed, hugging Doljong tight to his chest, his face hiding behind layers of blonde.

“Hannie?” Jihoon approached, he carefully sat down on the mattress, moving the bed a little with the sudden weight. He gazed concernedly at the kid, his hand moved to brush against the soft silky hair and tugged them to the side. “Do you want to talk? If not, we can stay like this until you feel better.”

A moment passed by, and Jeonghan lowered the bunny he was holding, his eyes lost in distance but he seemed not so… far away anymore, at least he looked soft and like how he was supposed to be.

“I-uh, I just-”

“Yeah?” Jihoon prompted.

“I just don’t know what to say.”

“Why?”

“I-” Jeonghan slowly sat up. “The school is not as bad as I thought, but not good either.” He shrugged.

Jihoon felt a little happy inside, at least he didn’t hate it, it’s better to have it neutral at this point though. “So, how was it?”

“I-uh, I just feel overwhelmed.” The kid looked at him, trying to rephrase his words. “Overwhelmed by everything.”

“It’s okay, no first day is supposed to be good.” Jihoon retreated his hand to his side. “It’s just there to let you know things.”

“But it’s weird, Dada.” Jeonghan said, in uncertainty. “It’s not my first time in a new school, I’ve done it so many times. I should have, but I didn’t. Why am I still-uh, just can’t- like, get used to it, you know.”

Jihoon looked at him, a wave of sadness and guilt washed over his inside, he felt bad for making Jeonghan feel that way. Since they’ve moved house so many many times, Jeonghan must also move school as well, he never really got the chance to actually experience what a normal life really looked like. His son was just a kid, he should not have gotten used to it. Jihoon pursed his lips. He should not have gotten used to his dads’ fear and mistakes.

But if they knew, Jeonghan’s life would be in danger. Jihoon and Soonyoung have already decided a long time ago that this was no longer a matter that having a say in it was doing any good. Because they had to, they must follow the flow.

“Dada.” Jeonghan waved his hand in front of his dad’s face. “You okay?”

The black-haired blinked. He must have gotten carried away.

Jeonghan heaved a heavy sigh. “I don’t know, let’s just forget it.” He shook his head. “I will have to go tomorrow too, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay.” Jihoon couldn’t tell what the kid was thinking of anymore. Sure it’s easy to read when he’s happy and all over the moon, but it’s not the same case when he was holding a lot of emotions inside. And Jihoon was not that open with emotions, just not yet.

…..

But he did try. “Do you want to lay down on my lap?” In his way, to be more empathic.

Jeonghan’s eyes went big, they looked slightly sparkling also. “Really? Can you play with my hair too?”

“Anything for you.”

The blonde yelped in excitement and wasted no time snuggling in his dad's lap. “Thank you Dada!!”

Jihoon chuckled. His hand moved to gently caress Jeonghan’s silky hair. The child’s hair has gotten slightly long too, he remembered when it was just a tiny pinch of hair sticking out at the back of his head, now it has brushed over his shoulders.

“Do you want to cut your hair, baby?”

“Why?” Jeonghan reached for Doljong and pulled the bunny into his arms.

“It’s long, aren’t you bothered by it?”

“Nuh uh.” The child shook his head. “I want to keep it long. Like your sister.”

Jihoon’s hand immediately stopped moving.

“You showed me her picture. And her hair was so beautiful! I want to be like her.” Jeonghan smiled.

Little did he know, what he just said had filled Jihoon’s heart with so many emotions that the adult could barely keep. He knew he couldn’t shed tears, because time has passed and nothing in that time really mattered now. But emotions were emotions, it would find a way to seep out, it’s only he knew or not.

“I understand.” The man’s hand shook slightly as he again brushed his fingers through the kid’s hair. Blonde hair, just like how his sister was. “Thank you, baby.” Just like how Aether was.

Jeonghan sulked at his desk. He looked at his unfinished clay statue of Doljong which was missing a head.

It’s already his third day of school, time did pass by quickly, didn’t it? And now he’s sitting in class in creative time trying to make a mini clay version of his bunny.

He wished he could bring Doljong to class. Jeonghan frowned, but he didn’t know how people would react, he didn’t want to be considered to be a target for bullying like in his old school. His heart throbbed and suddenly he exhaled a breath too heavy.

The kid shook his head. This wasn’t his old school anymore. He’s starting a new beginning and a new life in a whole new place. He couldn’t let those bad memories catch up to him, again, after spending so much time hiding away from them.

Jeonghan looked around. The kids around him were all busy with their own things, some crafting, some drawing and some gathering in a group to make a big project: they didn’t pay him no mind.

He turned back at his creation of Doljong and sighed. Could he even blame them though, he was the one to be so closed off since the start. He wished he had asked his Dada to buy more blue clay, other colours weren’t how Doljong should look like.

Should he ask his teacher? But she’s sitting too far away, he didn’t want to put himself in the spotlight.

Should he make blue from the leftover colours of his clay? But he didn’t know how.

The boy stuck in thought. Or maybe he could wait until school was over and then on the way home he would ask his Dada to buy some clay, but it’s still an hour away.

Jeonghan was deeply considering every possible solution. He couldn’t ask anyone also, he’s not close to them yet-

“Hey.”

He flinched. The blonde looked to his left and saw a boy looking back at him, his hair shaded brown under the ray of the sun filtered through curtains, a smile curled on his lips and his dark brown eyes reflected Jeonghan in their pupils.

“Um-” Jeonghan asked. “Me?”

The other curled a brow incredulously. “Then who?”

“Oh.”

“No more clay for the head?” He pointed at Doljong.

“Yeah.” Jeonghan sheepishly said. “How do you know?”

“I saw you staring at it like-” The boy shrugged. “Forever. So I just figured it out.”

He suddenly looked under his desk and seemed to be rummaging through it for something. Jeonghan stared at him dumbfoundedly, he had never met him before, and he knew there was no one sitting on his left during the two days he spent at school. Except today, like, the boy just appeared out of nowhere.

“Here.”

Jeonghan looked and almost squeaked in excitement because the boy just gave a handful of blue clay! Exactly the colour he needed!

“Thank you so much!!” His eyes sparkling as he received it.

“You’re welcome.” The boy grinned. And oh that was the most radiant smile Jeonghan has ever seen.

“But,” Suddenly Jeonghan frowned. “How do you know I was missing blue clay?”

“It was right in front of me, how would I not know?”

“Eh…?” The blonde looked at his desk, then at himself and back at the boy. “Is it that obvious?”

He chuckled. “Yeah.”

Jeonghan bashfully looked away, he had to stop being so easy to read, his fathers had also said the same thing a few times already.

“So..” Jeonghan heard rumbles and he turned around to see that the other kid had pushed his desk next to Jeonghan’s. And he was in the middle of carrying the chair to his desk. “What is it that you’re making?”

“Uh I- I am making a bunny.”

He put the chair down and sat down on it. “Can I help?”

“What about your crafting?” The blonde asked in surprise.

“Already done.” The boy jerked at the creation on his desk. The creation was made out of clay also, it was shaped like an emblem with a bright red in the middle.

“Oh, in that case, I think we can make mine together then.” Jeonghan pushed the clay into the middle. “Here. You will make the eyes and the mouth, and I will make the head.”

“How do you want the eyes and the mouth to be?”

“Like those you usually see on teddies.”

“Alright.” The boy nodded and he went into work right away.

Jeonghan stared at him for a moment. He’s surprised that someone was this willing to help a complete stranger like him, he’s a hundred percent sure he had never met this boy before and that added more to the shocking factor.

“Do I have something on my face?” Jeonghan blinked.

“Um- no. Sorry.” The blonde immediately went into making the head of Doljong like he said, slipping out the grin curling on the boy’s lips.

————————

“Done.” The boy announced.

Jeonghan squealed quietly as he looked at his mini version of Doljong finally finished. It’s beautiful!! Thanks to his crafting ability and to that boy’s help, of course.

“Thank you so much!” He turned to the other, grabbing his hands excitedly. “If not for you I won’t be able to do it!” The blonde grinned.

The boy widened his eyes a little, his brows raised high and cheeks flushed pink. “I-uh, it’s nothing. I was just-uh, you know, bored.”

“But still, thank you.” Jeonghan insisted.

His brown eyes twinkled like god hung stars in his eyes. His smile was so radiant and warm that I could feel hot even in this distance, and the breeze, the breeze blew his blonde hair like soft streams of crystal. Gosh, I could feel my heartbeat drumming like a freaking metal song right now.

“Oh, what’s your name?” Jeonghan asked. “Sorry I was so caught up in my craft that I completely forgot to introduce myself, I’m Jeonghan, Kwon Jeonghan, I’m a transfer student this year.”

“I’m Seungcheol,” The boy flusteredly smiled. “Choi Seungcheol.”

“Nice to meet you.”

Chapter Text

“Have a good day at school Hannie ah!” Jihoon waved, calling out to his child.

“See you Appa!” Jeonghan grinned, and he ran off into the schoolyard meddling in the crowd of kids.

Jihoon lowered his arm, sighing. He’s glad Jeonghan finally took a liking in school, though it was a bit too abrupt, it’s better than none. Like he was all but gloomy yesterday and now he’s excited enough to walk into school without Jihoon holding his hand.

But was the excitement enough to ask him to prepare two bags of cookies?

The adult raised a brow as he opened the door and got inside his car. He knew Jeonghan was a sweet tooth but two bags? The kid would prefer custard to cookie and he never had two custards.

Little did Jihoon know, Jeonghan didn’t intend that other bag for himself.

————————

Seungcheol was ignoring him.

Jeonghan stole bashful glances at the brunette who was surrounded by his classmates at his desk. He’s all smiling and chatting and he did not give an ounce of attention to Jeonghan.

He looked at the bag of cookies that he had asked his Dada to prepare this morning: he wanted to give it to Seungcheol as a gift for having helped him yesterday. He tried to get his attention, but the other was, probably didn’t hear him, or just blatantly ignoring him.

Jeonghan frowned. He didn’t like this. He thought they meant something, he thought they were friends.

Seungcheol had no problem giving attention to him yesterday but why having a problem now?

He couldn’t get upset either because it’s stupid to do so. And it’s not like he had enough of a reason to get upset.

He glanced at Seungcheol again, before turning away as the teacher announced the break was over.

Maybe, maybe he could try and give it to him at lunchtime. Surely the other would be easier to approach then and Jeonghan was just imagining things. There would be no way the other concluded that they were nothing.

But Jeonghan was wrong.

Of course Seungcheol would spend his lunchtime with his friends, why would he not? Jeonghan tried to grab his attention but it resulted the same, the others heard him but not him.

They all stared weirdly at him and Jeonghan felt so embarrassed in the spotlight that he just decided to retreat.

He could feel his face heating up in shame, and the small hand gripped the cookie bag so hard it left crinkles when he let go.

Jeonghan wanted to go home.

Just when he thought he finally had someone to care about him, he was quick to get soaked in the icy reality.

His sight blurred slightly, and he held back a sniff. He wanted to go home, he wanted to see his Appa and Dada, he wanted to see Doljong. Gosh, he wanted to play with Seungkwan and see Jisoo also.

He hasn’t played with the younger one at all this week because his Appa said Seungkwan was busy. And he hasn’t seen Jisoo since the day he visited him, the other left when he woke up even though he thought he would stay.

Too many times, and even today, he felt lonely.

Jeonghan tossed the cookie bag under his desk and brought out his lunchbox. Quietly munching on the sandwich his Dada has made for him, sniffing occasionally.

————————

Jeonghan woke up to the sound of footsteps. The boy rubbed his eyes and slowly looked around.

His classmates were sleeping beside him, it was nap time, even his teacher Mimi was seen sleeping on the chair with her jacket draped over her face.

He glanced around again. Nothing. Everything was pure silent and only sounds of kids sleeping were present. But Jeonghan was sure he heard footsteps, not like sound and clear steps but like it was tiptoed around, small and careful.

Jeonghan wanted to see if Seungcheol was around but he stopped himself in time. There was no need to do that, more like no reason to do that.

The kid gingerly sat up, he scratched his face unconsciously and felt that he should go to the bathroom. Apparently he drank too much water before napping time and if he kept holding it in he might wet himself.

He slipped out a yawn absent-mindedly and slowly stood up, slipping on his shoes and walked to the door. He stepped outside the hallway, the whole hallway was so eerily silent that it crept him out a little. But he figured he could make a quick go and back trip and decided to be brave.

Also, his teacher was so peacefully sleeping, he didn’t want to bother her.

So Jeonghan took the trip to the bathroom by himself, the occasional shine of light through the windows managed to calm his heart down. At least it’s not complete darkness. He’s not afraid of the darkness, he’s just scared of what's inside of it and what came along with it.

His Dada always turned on the night lamp for him before bedtime and it’s already become a habit at this point, Jeonghan wouldn’t fall asleep if there wasn’t at least a glint of light around him.

It’s troublesome, he knew, he’s trying to adjust as he’s growing up but it’s not that easy.

Jeonghan reached the washroom and breathed out a sigh in relief.

The aisle seemed to be empty but there was one block locked. Jeonghan wondered if there was someone else like him too.

……

He shut the lid and pushed the button, hearing the sound of water flushing. Jeonghan fixed his shorts, checking his fit to be ready and pushed open the door to his block.

“Jeonghan?”

The blonde flinched and looked to his left to see Seungcheol exit one of the blocks at the same time. He furrowed his brows.

“Seungcheol?”

“Yeah.” The boy smiled. “You can’t sleep too?”

“Um- no, not really.” Jeonghan shifted his gaze. “I just needed to use the washroom.”

“I see.”

And they fell in silence. Jeonghan didn’t know what else to say to prolong the conversation, and partly he didn’t want to prolong the conversation also because of how he was treated by Seungcheol this morning. Ignored.

Jeonghan sighed.

He rolled his sleeves up and washed his hands. He knew Seungcheol was looking at him but he didn’t care, being ignored was stingy, being disregard was stingy.

The blonde quickly turned off the faucet, rolling down his sleeves and excused himself while passing by Seungcheol. “See you in class-”

But suddenly he couldn't move. Jeonghan turned around and saw Seungcheol holding his wrist, keeping him in place.

“What-”

“Do you wanna go with me?”

Jeonghan tilted his head. “Where?”

“Just outside.”

“The school?”

“No silly, the yard.” Seungcheol chuckled and Jeonghan flushed a little at the pet name. “I can’t sleep so might as well use the rest of my nap time to get some fresh air.”

“But I can though.” Jeonghan sputtered. He didn’t intend for it to be funny but the other was being kind of unreasonable. “Why not just ask someone else?”

“I-I don’t know.” Seungcheol’s eyes averted as he said, then he stayed silent like he couldn’t come up with anything to retort.

Jeonghan didn’t understand, why ask him, someone who wanted to go back to sleep, to spend his precious nap time outside and wasting it?

“I guess, no, I’m sure, sorry for asking you.” Seungcheol spoke out of the blue and let go of Jeonghan’s wrist. “Sorry for being stupid.”

Jeonghan stared at the other, trying to figure out what he really meant. Sure it would not just because he couldn’t sleep so he would want to drag some stranger outside with him, right? There should be more to it, probably, and Jeonghan didn’t know more.

He felt sorry seeing Seungcheol scratching his nape and his cheeks flushing in shame in front of him. He wanted to help with whatever Seungcheol was dealing with, because he remembered he was here before Jeonghan even reached the washroom. And if Jeonghan was right, the footsteps he heard in the classroom were also his. That meant the other really couldn’t sleep and had some problems to share.

Yet Jeonghan wanted to sleep, he valued his sleeping time as much as everything else. However, there might be a solution somewhere, a co-solution that could solve both his sleepiness and Seungcheol’s problem.

“Do you think I can sleep in the yard?”

“Huh?” Seungcheol looked up at the sudden question, it took him a few moments to fully comprehend what he was asked. “I think you can. I will find a place if you want to.”

“Great.” Jeonghan internally congratulated himself. “Then let’s go.”

“Where?”

“Didn’t you ask me to go outside with you?” The blonde raised a brow incredulously. “I agree, as long as I can sleep.”

“You sure? You were quick to reject me before.”

“Yeah well, since I didn’t know if I could sleep in the yard. Now I know, so why not?” Jeonghan urged him. “Unless you change your mind?”

He stared at him dumbfoundedly and Jeonghan felt uneasy under the other’s gaze. Until a soft curl bloomed on Seungcheol’s lips and his face brightened up softly as he chuckled.

“So… we go now?” Jeonghan prompted.

“Okay.”

They walked out of the washroom and Seungcheol told him to wait while he ran back to class to grab something.

Jeonghan fidgeted with the hem of his shirt as he looked outside the window and enjoyed the peaceful sight of the school play yard basking under the warm sunlight and the autumn breeze blowing occasionally giving it life.

He loved the fall season, it’s not hot, it’s not cold, it's just enough. Enough to love and enough to let go.

Jeonghan heard footsteps and he turned to see Seungcheol approaching him with what seemed to be a sweater in hand.

“Let’s go, Jeonghan.”

“Is that your sweater?”

Seungcheol nodded as he put his hand out in front of Jeonghan.

“What?” The blonde stared at it.

“Do you want to hold hands?”

Jeonghan thought about it before shrugging it off. He had no problem with holding hands though. “Okay.”

They walked hand in hand, as Seungcheol in front leading him and Jeonghan behind glancing around the building and once or twice shifting his eyes onto the other’s back.

He led Jeonghan to the shade of a tree, not too far from the school lobby but far enough for people to only be able to see them if they really paid attention.

“Here we are.”

Seungcheol turned back to him and let out a big smile.

“What do you think?”

Jeonghan looked at him, then shifted his eyes back to the tree. “It’s great. Not too bright because of the shade, and cool enough.”

“Glad you like it.”

Seungcheol let go of their hand holding and sat down as Jeonghan only stood dumbfounded.

“So, where do I sleep?”

“Here.” The brunette patted on his lap. “I think my legs are soft enough.”

Jeonghan raised a brow.

“Or you can choose to lie on the grass, they are soft too.”

Jeonghan crossed his arms and squinted his eyes thinking. Both choices seemed good honestly, he only needed a place to lie his head on and sleep, he didn’t really care what they were, he’s just considering which one was softer.

“Jeonghan?”

He opened one eye to look at Seungcheol.

“It’s not that hard Jeonghan, I mean, if it was really then you can lie on the grass. They’re pretty nice I assure. I’ve been here many times and I’m sure about it.”

Jeonghan shrugged. “It’s not like I don’t believe you. I’m just wondering which one is better.”

“Oh.” Seungcheol smiled. “Then I can’t tell you.”

The blonde contemplated for a little more, before finally concluding his choice. He sat down gingerly beside Seungcheol and turned his side to him.

“So?” Seungcheol prompted. “I think the grass is better.”

“I don’t know.” Jeonghan shrugged. “Because I chose you.”

He could see the brunette visibly stunned, as if he didn’t expect it.

“Did you change your mind?” Jeonghan asked. “If so I can-”

“No, no of course not, why would I?” Seungcheol flusteredly said. “Here.” He patted on his laps again.

Jeonghan looked at him funny, before carefully lying down on the other. He cocooned into him and felt Seungcheol getting stiff as he adjusted himself.

“Are you okay?”

“Huh?”

“I’m asking you.” Jeonghan closed his eyes briefly. “Are you okay?”

Seungcheol stayed quiet for a second. “..Yeah.”

Jeonghan thought about this morning, thought about how the boy treated him and how different that was to now. And he couldn’t resist the questions bubbling in his throat.

“Why did you ignore me?”

He turned to look at Seungcheol and the other was having both his brows raised.

“This morning Seungcheol, why did you ignore me?”

“I-” Seungcheol scratched his nape. “I don’t know either.”

“I called you during lunchtime and even came to your table, but you just, I don’t know, didn’t hear me or just straight up ignoring me.” Jeonghan reminded him. “Why?”

“I- I just...”

“There was more to it, I know. But I thought we were friends, do you know how sad I was seeing you ignoring me?” Jeonghan almost felt himself getting more upset, but he was relieved, just in time to not let it show.

Seungcheol seemed to be more and more baffled the longer this topic lasted, and Jeonghan decided to be merciful to him and be a bigger person.

“That’s okay, I guess. I’m not hurt anymore.” Jeonghan adjusted his head. “It’s just.” He thought of his words. “You aren’t being consistent with how you were to me and that confuses me.”

He closed his eyes, feeling sleep immediately fall upon him. The autumn breeze tickled his cheek and he’s so on the verge to wander into dreamland. But he felt softs fingers dance featherly in his hair and the feeling of something draping upon him.

“Can I touch your hair?” He heard Seungcheol asking.

“Aren’t you doing it right now?”

“Yeah,” The other twirled a strand. “I’m sorry, for making you feel that way.”

Jeonghan opened his eyes in surprise.

“I’m sorry for ignoring you and hurting you.”

“So… you really were ignoring me?”

“I- I didn’t mean to.” The blonde could hear exasperation laced in Seungcheol’s voice. “I didn’t mean to ignore you, it was- was never meant to be like that. I didn’t know how to act around you, I didn’t know how to introduce you to others. I didn’t know you really well and I didn’t know them really well.”

“I thought they were your friends?”

“I wouldn’t say so.”

“Huh-?” Before Jeonghan could turn to look at him, Seungcheol had already beaten him to it by covering his eyes with his palm. “Hey!”

“Go to sleep Jeonghan, nap time will be over if you don’t appreciate it right now.”

“What does ‘appreciate’ mean?”

“To treasure something.” Seungcheol sighed. “Now sleep, close your eyes, I will be right here when you wake up.”

“You better not lie to me.” Jeonghan begrudgingly listened.

“Why would I lie to you?”

“Someone said the same thing to me before and-” He said shyly. “And they weren’t there when I woke up.”

“I’m not them, Jeonghan, I say what I say, and I keep what I tell.” The boy assured him. “Just sleep.”

“Okay.”

Jeonghan closed his eyes, feeling the other’s fingers caress his hair softly as he slowly fell into dreamland.

Next day.

Seungcheol patted on his lap, and Jeonghan wasted no time in lying down.

“You can’t sleep again?”

Seungcheol hummed. He felt the blonde shifting lightly on his lap in search of a comfortable sleeping position.

“I’m kind of jealous of you for sleeping so well, you know.”

Jeonghan shrugged. “I actually can’t sleep that well, my dads always say I’m a light sleeper. I don’t know why I’m sleeping well now too.”

The brunette smiled. “I will wake you up when it’s time.”

The other nodded and he started to stay still, hinting that he was already on the way to his dream.

Seungcheol carefully draped his sweater on Jeonghan. The weather was slightly colder today and he didn’t want Jeonghan to catch a cold while staying out with him.

He weaved his fingers into the blonde’s hair, feeling the soft strands brushing against his tips. Jeonghan seemed to like it when someone played with his hair, since he didn’t say no when Seungcheol was doing it without asking. He listened to the even breaths from the other.

Seungcheol didn’t expect him to accept it. He didn’t expect Jeonghan to come with him.

It was said out of pure spontaneity. He felt bad for brushing off Jeonghan all day so he wanted to redeem himself, by offering him something and being a little kind.

He might seem cocky, but that's just how it was always done. He came from a family with an important title so he never knew the other way, people always came up to him even if he’s wronged them. Seungcheol didn’t know he had that type of habit.

So he was stunned when Jeonghan was so blunt in pointing him out, he's gotten used to being told beautiful lies masking unpleasant intentions and what Jeonghan’s done was not what he’s used to.

Seungcheol perused the blonde’s peaceful sleeping face.

He also didn't expect Jeonghan to choose his suggestion.

Sure he was the one to say it out loud, but it was a joke. Between lying on grass and on his lap, it never crossed his mind that Jeonghan would choose the latter. It was impossible and baseless to think like that. But well, Jeonghan wasn’t someone easy to tell either.

Seungcheol chuckled at his thought but he quickly shut it when he saw Jeonghan’s face frown slightly. The other did mention he was a light sleeper though. Guess Seungcheol would need to be more careful.

He laid his head on the tree trunk, breathing out a breath too heavy. His eyes looked up to the flock of leaves above his head shakened lightly in the breeze passing by.

An alpha. He squeezed his eyes shut. He’s an alpha, he’s an honorable heir and he had an fiance. His grandfather would not be happy finding out his grandson was getting involved with another omega.

But Seungcheol didn’t want his life to be controlled like a puppet. He had his own wills and thoughts, and it’s not like his fiance cared either, she’s told him that they had to wait for the right opportunity while playing this whole family game. And probably it would take long before Seungcheol could finally have his head up high in his own ground.

Seungcheol was young, and he was ambitious.

“Hyung!!”

The brunette opened his eyes at the call. He looked down to check if Jeonghan was disturbed by it before looking up to who called him.

“Vernon. Seungkwan.”

The kids grinned as they were skipping to him. But Seungkwan stopped when he saw Jeonghan lying on his lap.

Seungcheol put a finger to his lips and shushed. “Don’t be loud, kids. He is sleeping.”

The round cheek kid kneeled down as his friend stood beside him, he looked at Jeonghan with a smile slowly blooming on his lips. “It’s Jeonghannie.”

“Huh.” Seungcheol raised a brow. “You know him?”

“Yeah, he lives across from my house with uncle Soonyoung and uncle Jihoon.” Seungkwan booped Jeonghan’s nose and the other’s face scrunched up at the touch. “He’s very cute and funny.”

Seungcheol looked at Jeonghan, before he’s reminded there was someone else here too and he looked up at Vernon, who was blankly staring at him and Seungkwan.

“Vernon.” He smiled. “How was your first week at school?”

The kid flinched at the sudden attention. He scratched his nape as he’s busy finding his words.

“It’s fine hyung. It was not that different from kindergarten, just a lot more people.”

“I see.” Seungcheol turned to Seungkwan who was scrutinizing Jeonghan hard. “What about you, Seungkwan?”

“Huh, me?” The boy looked up. “It’s fun, I can make many friends and play with them all day. The teachers are fun too.”

“I’m glad, since it’s you two’s first time in elementary school. At least it’s okay, you seem to have no problem with it.”

The kids flushed their cheeks slightly at the compliment.

“When is Jisoo hyung coming though?” Vernon sputtered.

“Wonwoo hyung told me he will come next week.” Seungkwan sat down, relieving his thighs from getting cramped. “But I wonder why he always comes late? Wonwoo hyung said that this was customary at this point, he would always come late to school.”

Vernon squinted his eyes, instantly being curious too.

“Do you know why, hyung?” Seungkwan turned to him.

Seungcheol shook his head and Seungkwan sighed loudly.

Actually, he knew. Seungcheol knew why Jisoo would always delay his arrival to school, but he chose not to speak. It’s something only him and Jisoo shared in common.

“By the way, why did you two come here?” He deviated the topic. “Shouldn’t you be sleeping right now?”

“Vernon can’t sleep.” Seungkwan pointed to the boy. “He was all rolling around the mat, and he woke me up because I was next to him.”

“Sorry..” Vernon said bashfully.

“And now we both can’t go back to sleep. And I saw you staying out here during nap time the other day and I thought, why not join you.” Seungkwan grinned. “And now we are here.”

Seungcheol chuckled. “Okay, guess I have no choice then. You can stay with me but don’t make too much noise, alright?”

“Yes hyung.”

“But,” Vernon took his place beside Seungkwan and jerked at the boy sleeping soundly on Seungcheol’s lap. “Who is he?”

“He’s Jeonghan, my new friend in class.” The brunette replied. “He’s kind.”

“And cute too.” Seungkwan added. “I was so sad that I couldn’t play with him this week because of school.”

“You can always play with him though. Didn’t you say he lived across from your house?”

“That’s not the point, Vernonie.”

Seungkwan huffed, and the poor boy looked around so confused at his friend's reaction.

“Does Jeonghan know Jisoo, Seungkwan?”

The round cheek boy nodded while huffing. “They are pretty close too.”

“I see.”

“Eh, but how did you know they know each other, hyung?”

“I just guess.” Seungcheol shrugged. “Jisoo is close to you, and you said you’ve played with Jeonghan many times. Not including that you’re on the top of the friendliest person I know. It’s kinda natural to think like that, you know.”

Seungkwan rubbed his chin in thought, before having his attention grabbed by Vernon as the kid found a ladybug on the ground and was about to put it in his mouth.

“Vernon! Put that down.”

Seungcheol twirled the strand of Jeonghan's hair, scanning his face for any discomfort and smiling softly at how peaceful he was while sleeping. Glad that he didn’t get disturbed by how the two kids were all but being silent.

He looked at the chaotic scene and saw chocolate chip cookies dangling in a bag tied to Vernon's pants, and he thought back to the cookie bag that Jeonghan gave him yesterday.

————————

“Here.”

Seungcheol blinked at the cookie in front of his face. “What-”

“It’s for you.” Jeonghan pouted.

It was already dismissal time, and Seungcheol was about to go home. He was just going around saying goodbye to his classmates and when he turned to Jeonghan, the other suddenly pulled him to the side and rummaged inside his backpack for something.

“For me?” The brunette received the bag in confusion. “Why?”

“For helping me yesterday.”

“The statue?”

Jeonghan nodded, and suddenly something warm rose inside Seungcheol.

He looked at the cookie bag, flipping it around and admiring it. “You- you didn’t have to.”

The boy stayed silent. Even under the hazy light filtered through the curtain, Seungcheol could see how pink his face was, and he felt heat rushing to his face too.

“I-I appreciate it, Jeonghan.” Seungcheol grabbed the bag a little too tight. “Thank you.”

“You are welcome.” Jeonghan averted his eyes. “But it’s broken in some place, so sorry if it’s not pretty.”

Only until the blonde said that Seungcheol really noticed. He glanced at the bag and indeed a few parts were broken.

“It’s okay.” But to Seungcheol, even if it was broken, it’s still beautiful to him. Maybe because he has received so many perfect things before and something like this was a new breeze of a day. “I still love it.”

Jeonghan’s face flushed at the expression and he quickly turned away, mouthing small. “Okay.”

Seungcheol sighed, laying his head on the tree trunk, closing his eyes.

If only. If only he could really be in control of his life.

Chapter Text

Jeonghan hooked his bag on the side of the table and fetched his water bottle.

His Dada had something coming up today and so he had to drop Jeonghan way earlier than usual at school. But he made sure that the kid had someone looking out for him. Mimi, his teacher, always arrived early at school and was gladly accepting the sudden babysitting job.

“Don’t go outside without telling me, okay?” Mimi told him. “I will be in the office if you need me.”

“Yes ma’am”

Mimi smiled and patted his head. Jeonghan watched her picking her bag and exiting the classroom.

He’s actually quite capable of being on his own, but only while knowing that there was someone he found safe in was nearby, or else he’s just a delusional and scaredy cat.

He twisted the bottle cap off, peering inside just to confirm that he did forget to fill his bottle this morning because he was too sleepy to function. He was sad of having to go to school so early, but his dad promised him a playdate this week and then he wasn’t gloomy anymore.

Jeonghan slid the door open and walked to the water dispenser at the end of the hallway. He pushed the button and felt his bottle getting heavier by seconds before stopping.

He took a sip and closed the cap, shaking the bottle as he skipped back to his classroom. Sometimes the boy just adored the silence, especially the silence before its supposed usual liveliness.

Thinking about his playdate, Jeonghan could feel excitement fill him inside almost instantly. Wait, he should invite Seungkwan too! It’s been so long since the last time they met. And he should invite Jisoo and Chan and Wonwoo hyung and uncle Mingyu and uncle Jun and- in general just everyone he knew! He loved having people he liked around, and the more the merrier.

Jeonghan internally squealed, he just couldn’t wait!

The boy slid the classroom’s door open and happily walked back to his table. He put the water bottle back and his soul almost jumped out of his body when the door opened again.

He expected to see his teacher Mimi but instantly squealed in elation and surprise as he saw a familiar face.

“Jisoo!”

The boy greeted him with a smile.

“Hi Jeonghan.”

Jeonghan instantly rushed to Jisoo’s side. “I- I didn’t know that we were in the same class.”

Jisoo shrugged. “A coincidence, I believe.”

The blonde raised his brows at the weird word. But he’s reminded that there was another person in the same scene as him that he didn’t greet yet and so he dropped the wonder.

“I think so too.” He quickly agreed. “Hi Wonwoo hyung.” Jeonghan flashed the most radiant grin he had at the older kid.

“Hello Jeonghan.” Wonwoo said. “Nice to see you.”

“Nice to see you too hyung!” He gaped. “Do you study in the same class as me too?”

“Of course not, Jeonghan. I just walk Jisoo to his class, but in a way you’re right, I study in the same school as you.” Wonwoo patiently fixed the mistake.

“So, where is your class?”

“On the first floor, just below you.”

“Oh! Then that means we can hang out-!” Jeonghan beamed.

“Sir.”

A voice suddenly stopped the boy in his trance and before he could look up to see the person, Jisoo already pulled him back into class and stood in front of him shielding his view. And with the other being slightly taller than him, it resulted in Jeonghan couldn’t see who Wonwoo was talking to.

“How was your first week at a new school, Jeonghan?” Jisoo suddenly asked.

“Uh-” He was flustered by the question and quickly racked through his brain for an answer. “It was good, I mean, I don’t like school so I won’t say that all of it is good. But-.”

“That’s good to hear.” Jisoo chimed in. “Did you make any friends?”

Jeonghan was reminded of Seungcheol and the contentment in himself instantly grew, forgetting his wonder about the voice that interrupted him and simply letting Wonwoo slip out of his sight.

“I did!” He grinned. “His name is Seungcheol! He’s a great friend, he’s kind and we play together a lot- ”

Jisoo nodded and encouraged him to continue. He subtly pulled Jeonghan further away from the door in a manner to not allow him to notice.

“He gave me pairs of hairclips too, they are so pretty! And my Appa kept asking me where I got them and when I told him, he was having this little sad face on him. And-”

“I see you were having a good first week at school, weren’t you?”

“Yeah, but…” Suddenly Jeonghan pouted. “He didn’t come yesterday.”

“Seungcheol?”

Jeonghan nodded.

“Maybe he had something coming up.”

“Like my Dad today too. He was busy with something so I had to come to school early alone.”

“I see.”

Jisoo looked at him for a moment.

“But it’s okay.” Jisoo gently held his hand. “I’m here with you too, so you’re not alone at all.” And intertwined their fingers lightly as he said.

A smile curled on Jeonghan’s lips and the other’s features softened at Jeonghan’s expression.

“I- I’m so glad we can meet.” He said, in all honesty. “But, why didn’t you come last week, like, the whole week. I had no idea you would be here and I never saw you once after you left the last time.”

“Hm, how should I put it?” Jisoo shrugged. “It’s just a thing in my family.”

“Eh.” Jeonghan raised both his brows high. “But-”

“A family's thing, yeah.”

“That- that’s weird. But awesome also! You can take a break from school without worry!” Jeonghan innocently said, and Jisoo chuckled at it. He didn’t know if the other was laughing at his silliness or just at what he said.

“But,” Suddenly he thought of something. “Why did you know it was a new school for me?”

“Huh?” Jisoo frowned slightly. “You’re asking why did I know you were a transfer?”

Jeonghan questionably nodded. Why did the way Jisoo phrase his questions feel like he was mocking him in a way.

“You just moved here, Jeonghan. Of course I know this will be a new school for you.”

“Oh.” He flusteredly replied. The boy felt like he just asked the dumbest question ever, of course Jisoo would know, the other was there when he proudly introduced himself to be a newcomer.

A double knock on the door stopped Jeonghan in his trance of thought. He looked to only realize now the door was already closed some time ago and Wonwoo was nowhere to be seen. He didn't even notice the older kid slipping away, he was too engrossed in talking to Jisoo.

He thought about asking Jisoo why he left the last time at his house but before Jeonghan could open his mouth, Jisoo already shut it.

“I think I need to go.” Jisoo shook away their hand holding, and Jeonghan’s inside dropped a little. “But I will be back soon.” He consoled, as if he could sense Jeonghan’s upset.

“No no it’s okay.” Jeonghan shook his head. “Just take your time. I don’t mind.”

Jisoo stared at him for a moment and he felt like he was being read.

“I know you do mind, Jeonghan.” Suddenly the raven said.

Jeonghan raised his brows. But Jisoo only smiled in return and waved at him as he pushed the door open and exited the room.

————————

“So, this is where you spend your nap time?” The raven asked.

Jeonghan grinned as Seungcheol sat down and patted on his lap, signaling for him. “I mean it’s quite great out here.” The brunette replied on behalf of him.

“What are you doing?” Jisoo ignored it. “Jeonghan?” And had his attention fixated on the blonde instead.

“I’m going to sleep.” Jeonghan answered with excitement.

Jisoo knitted his brows. “Shouldn’t the mattress in class be better than those green things?”

“You mean grass?” Seungcheol scoffed. “That's a weird way to call grass, Jisoo.”

“I wasn’t talking to you.”

Jeonghan suddenly sensed tension in the air, Jisoo was looking down on the other so intensely and Seungcheol in return was just grinning with not much of friendly intention.

“Um- guys-” They both turned to him and Jeonghan shifted uneasily under the attention. “I- well, the grass is soft. And like- I mean sleeping outside isn’t a bad idea. In class it can be hot sometimes and-”

“I understand, Jeonghan” Jisoo stopped him. Could Jisoo have noticed Jeonghan’s attempt at elevating the situation? “I have no problem.”

“Huh?” Jeonghan said in shock.

“Me too.” Seungcheol quickly added.

“But-” Jeonghan flustered. How did they come into union so fast when they were acting the exact opposite just moments ago.

“I think I will sit down, my legs are giving out.” Jisoo said nonchalantly and stepped to the side looking for a spot while Seungcheol beckoned for Jeonghan to come with a soft look.

The blonde followed confusedly, making himself comfortable on the other’s lap and looking at Seungcheol with questions bubbling in his mind as the boy draped his sweater on him.

“I don’t understand, Cheollie.” It’s a nickname Jeonghan gave the other as a form of adoration.

“You don’t have to, Jeonghan.” Seungcheol shook his head. “Eh- But-”

“It’s okay-”

“Jeonghannie!!!”

All three of them turned at the shout and Jeonghan sat up rather hastily, startling Seungcheol and cutting him off in the middle of his sentence.

“Seungkwannie!”

“Jeonghannie!!!!!” The round cheek boy rushed forward and almost tripped on his feet but quickly collected himself before jumping into a tight hug with Jeonghan.

“Be careful Seungkwan ah.” Jeonghan frowned.

“I’m okay!! I’m just so excited to meet you!!” He rambled when they pulled away. “You know what Jeonghannie, I missed you so much!! It’s been so long since the last time we played together and I was hoping that I could see you and when I saw you here last week I was like, is this destiny?! And-”

“Wait.” Jeonghan had to halt the boy’s talking for a moment because he felt like he couldn’t catch up with what Seungkwan was saying anymore. “You saw me here last week!?”

“Yes!!”

“Oh my gosh!”

“Right! I mean- how is this even possible?!” Seungkwan’s grin almost reached his ears. “Oh oh, wait, I forgot.” He turned around and Jeonghan looked in the direction the other turned to.

He saw a boy running up to them, his hair was the same shade as Seungcheol’s hair colour and when he reached him and Seungkwan, the boy immediately had his hands on his knees and hunched slightly grabbing for air.

“This is Vernon.” Seungkwan pointed to him and introduced. “He’s my friend, my best friend in school! He is quite shy but don’t worry, if you get close to him you will know he is the sweetest person ever!”

Jeonghan waited for the boy to finish collecting himself before initiating a conversation. They made eye contact once he finally looked up and he quickly beat the blonde to it as he started first.

“Hello, I’m Vernon. I believe I’m one year younger than you.” Vernon scratched his nape. “Nice to meet you, hyung.”

“Nice to meet you too, Vernon. I’m Jeonghan.” Jeonghan reciprocated. “I’m a new student, I just moved here last month.”

“Yeah, I heard it from Seungkwan.”

Jeonghan gave the said boy a curious look. “You told him about me?”

“Well.” Seungkwan shaped his lips into a thin line as he’s thinking. “He was curious, he saw you sleeping here and he was like, who was he? And I had to tell him.”

“Is it bad?”

“Huh?” Jeonghan now turned to Vernon, and the boy was having this guilty look on his face. “Is it bad that I know?”

“Why would it be?” Jeonghan quickly placated. “I didn’t mean it like I don’t want you to know, I was just surprised.”

Seungkwan shifted his eyes from Vernon to Jeonghan, and decided to deviate the conversation to another topic. “Well, are you free this weekend Hannie? I want to go out with you and spend time together.”

“Oh right, my dad promised me a playdate this morning too.” Jeonghan eagerly said. “We can combine both of them to make one big playdate!”

“Gosh! Yes! That will be the best!” Seungkwan’s eyes lit up at the idea.

“Why don’t you join too, Vernon?” Jeonghan asked the boy.

“M-Me?” Vernon flustered.

“Why not? C’mon.” Seungkwan pulled him into their circle and the boy clumsily joined in before being drowned in enthusiasm from the two chattery boys.

…..

“How is your leg?”

Jisoo leaned back onto the tree trunk. “Fine.” Curtly he replied.

Seungcheol peered at the other before bringing his attention back to Jeonghan, Seungkwan and Vernon. “Was the training too hard on you?”

“You quite underestimate me, Choi.”

“Well,” Seungcheol shrugged. “Guess your dad never changes.”

“I don’t expect him to.”

They fell into silence for a second.

“Then,” The brunette turned to his friend, being amused at how peaceful Jisoo looked under the lukewarm sunray and the occasional autumn breeze. “How is Minghao?”

“He’s good.” Jisoo paused, seeming to consider something before continuing. “But, he still has a lot to learn.”

Seungcheol frowned. “Just how much more training he’s required to do to be considered qualified? I knew you one year ago and he was already under training longer than that.”

“He’s still lacking.” Jisoo looked at the other. “He needs to do more, if he wants to be with me.” And he raised a brow. “You know what, I don’t really need any golden spoon kid to tell me how to do my business.”

The “golden spoon” kid chuckled out loud as Jisoo glared at him. “Oh so scary.” He wiped an imaginative tear before replying in a rather teasing tone. “Relax. Of course I wouldn’t want to put my nose in something that is not mine. I was just curious.”

Jisoo rolled his eyes. “Sure.”

“We are friends, after all. What’s wrong in keeping up with a friend’s friend? You always gatekeep everything.”

“As far as I know, we are not friends. And as much as you said, we are allies.” Jisoo pointed out. “I only tolerate you because of it, giving many times you get on my nerves.”

“Don’t be so cold.” Seungcheol sneered. “Allies are friends too, you know. Even though I don’t know you for long, and I don’t really like you that much.”

A flat red sparked from his eyes and the curl of his lips leaned toward taunting. “But we still share something in common, and it’s enough, don’t you think?”

The wind suddenly stopped blowing and everything halted.

Only the sounds of three children being excited was the only living being among the eerie silence. Even Jisoo and Seungcheol’s conversation seemed like it was also on pause. The atmosphere dropped chilly with a few celsius down, quietly but seething.

It only returned sufferable when Seungcheol snickered.

He clasped his hand, smiling as if he had not just switched on the dominant eyes at another alpha, a hazard one even. “Sorry for my impoliteness. Why don’t we join with the others? I think we missed out on some good things.”

Jisoo squinted as he let the other drag him into the conversation of three clueless kids, who had no idea about what just happened and cheerfully welcomed them without question.

Being threatened by another alpha was nothing to Jisoo, he didn’t care that much. He’s already used to it at some point. He's just satisfied with himself for pulling that kind of impression out of the one alpha he regarded as exemplary and chaste. He was surprised to witness such rage.

He just wished that Seungcheol would show that side more instead of this annoying side of his.

———————————————————————————————

Jisoo crumbled the paper and threw it hard across the room, hitting the door right at the moment it opened and startling whoever was on the other side.

“Good afternoon, sir.”

The raven swirled his chair around, heaving a sigh rather heavy and slightly annoyed. “What’s the matter this time, Wonwoo?”

Wonwoo shyly stepped in while bowing deeply. “There is something I need your opinions on.”

“Speak.”

He pulled out the paper he was having behind his back and carefully started. “There are signs of a new gang founded in the metropolis Seoul city, we found their signatures drawn on walls, they were also seen on our camera intruding into our estate and the leader’s confirmed to be Reol.” Wonwoo glanced at his boss. “The one you used to wipe out before.”

Jisoo waved his hand. “Continue.”

“So I’m asking about whether we should order a specialized group to go to Seoul to annihilate them or-”

“Just let them be.”

Wonwoo furrowed his brow. “Yes..?”

The raven turned his chair back, unknotting his ties while talking to his assistant. “I don’t care about them. After all they are just a bunch of lizards wiggling for a way to survive. It’s always easy to kick them out of the game.” He brushed his hair. “Now, just watch them.”

Wonwoo bowed, noting down everything inside his head. He’s thankful for his photographic memory, it often stood him out among the crowd. “Yes, sir.” He was about to excuse himself to exit the room before he was requested with an abrupt query.

“Wonwoo, what day is it today?”

The curly hair checked his watch and was wondering why his boss asked for that as he was suddenly reminded of the one and only sole reason, he’s fortunate to remember it in time.

“It’s two weeks away from the lady’s birthday, sir.”

Jisoo hummed.

“Do you want my opinions on what to give her, sir?”

The raven hopped down from his chair and Wonwoo noted it. He would ask the craftsman later to fix the height of the chair in regard that Jisoo was still growing and has not reached the height required to casually stand up from it yet.

“I notice the girls in my class seem to like stuffs like necklaces, bracelets, sometimes it can be small toy and-”

“You know Tia is not like others.” Jisoo cut him short. “She,” He thought for a moment on how he should phrase what he wanted to say. “She was supposed to.”

Wonwoo watched the way Jisoo’s expression unfolded on his face, for the first time ever his boss really looked like his age for once. He looked just like an innocent 7 years old child with no malice and no bitterness in his mind, just a little boy living life like others.

He missed how Jisoo was before everything, his boss would always come to him and welcome him with an endearing smile like a little brother that Wonwoo never had, but one incident and it’s gone forever.

Now the other treated him just like an assistant, nothing else.

He didn’t know if the kid still had it, yet he trusted him to have a space for vulnerability and love somewhere in his heart. Maybe it’s just hidden and would be awakened someday.

It's better to hope and believe because Wonwoo didn’t know better. He’s just reached the age of 10, he’s not supposed to know everything despite being expected to.

“I think we can buy her a picnic blanket." Wonwoo proposed.

“Huh?” Jisoo’s face instantly returned to normal, with no trace of childlikeness remaining. “Picnic blankets?”

“Yes, her guards reported to me that she kept talking about it all day and even insisted on them buying it for her. But they didn’t dare to without your order.”

The raven considered, truly and thoroughly, it’s not like his sister was still herself anymore. If she was still healthy and lucid, she definitely would be embarrassed by this idea. “I guess,” But she was no longer sane, not this time. “It’s not bad.”

Wonwoo’s face lit up at the compliment. “Can I entrust this one to you, Wonwoo?”

“Yes sir!”

Jisoo smiled while dismissing him. “You can go now.”

Wonwoo bowed deep to him before exiting the room with a soft click.

The raven sighed, again. He has taken too many heavy breaths today, at least his sister’s birthday still kept him in his right mind.

He had to get into work right at the second he arrived home, and it’s frustrating because it’s not only his work but the old hag’s work also. It all piled up on his desk like a hell of trash. Worse, some of them were even stupid to begin with, he didn’t understand why the old hag’s assistant still issued it, probably his age has started catching up to him.

Jisoo shoved hands into his pockets and a candy slipped out and fell onto the hard floor, eliciting a soft crack. He leaned down to pick it up, wondering where and when he even owned this.

“Here, Jisoo.”

Jeonghan spread a handful of candies on his table, drawing out a frown from him. “What?”

“Pick one.”

Jisoo looked at the boy questionably, then at the candies, then back at him again before shaking his head.

“Why?” Jeonghan asked, his tone laced with a hint of disappointment.

“I don’t like candies.” In fact, Jisoo has not had them once ever since the incident.

“Oh.” The blonde made a small sound. He slowly gathered his candies while mouthing apologies. “Sorry.”

Suddenly Jisoo felt something inside him ache. He patted his body for any injuries.

It was a sudden throb, like something in his gut just wrenched. It's not harsh but rough enough to leave him in confusion because he’s sure he did not suffer any wounds.

He glanced at Jeonghan. The other was gathering the candies back into his little pouch with a sad expression on his face.

“Actually.” He called, and the boy looked up almost immediately. “Can I have one?”

The blonde looked surprised for a short minute before a smile blooming on his lips and he quickly presented his candies to Jisoo again. “Which one?”

Jisoo shrugged, he didn’t eat enough sweets to know which was the best. “Can you choose for me?”

“Alright.” Jeonghan poured the candies out and gingerly went over them. Jisoo didn’t really understand what was the hype about candies? They were just a bunch of chemical snacks designed for a bunch of clueless customers.

But Jeonghan seemed happy about it, and Jisoo just let him be.

“Here.” He showed him a double twist candy. “This is one of my favourites.”

Jisoo feigned a smile. “Is that so?” He received the candy and threw it a glimpse before shoving it into the depth of his pockets. “What kind of candy is it?”

“It has chocolate covered outside, and inside is an almond.” Jeonghan described. “It’s good, I promise.”

And then he grinned, bright and radiant.

Jisoo put the candy on his desk. Coincidentally the candy picked was the same flavour his sister liked too.

Jeonghan’s kind of amusing in a way, Jisoo had to admit. He’s naive, and that unsophisticated side of him kept success in drawing Jisoo’s interest out. The raven remembered that the other often spent his nap time outside and he was lying on this dirty and filthy ground.

Of course Jisoo knew that he didn’t make actual direct contact with it, but it’s still gross.

He thought for a moment. Maybe he could buy Jeonghan a picnic blanket too so he could sleep without worrying about getting his clothes mucky. Even though Jeonghan didn’t show it, Jisoo knew he was bothered.

He hummed and was about to grab his phone on his desk to make a call to Wonwoo before he stopped himself.

Wait.

Jisoo’s not supposed to care about him.

He’s supposed to hate him.

Jisoo stepped away from the desk, shaking his head violently. Gosh, glad he could stop himself in time.

Where did that extra thoughtful thought come from?

He knew Jeonghan did nothing to him. He was all but being bad toward him.

But Jisoo had a plan. He had his ambitions. And he had vowed on his name that he would never trust anyone again or it would become a sin that he could never purify.

Jisoo followed as he let himself get dragged by Jeonghan, another nap time and another trip to the outside by this kid, not forgetting Seungcheol also. He had no idea why the brunette would want to spend his time out here that much and why Jeonghan was so willing to follow.

Jeonghan stopped when they reached the spot and pulled something out of his pocket, Jisoo noticed there was something dangling from there a few minutes ago but just like he has always been, never giving anything enough concern to speak, he stayed silent.

The blonde laid the thing out on the ground and Jisoo realized it was a picnic blanket. The one thing he was about to buy for Jeonghan out of his crazed mind.

“Sit down, Jisoo.” He heard a voice behind him and immediately rolled his eyes without looking to know who it was.

“Hello Jeonghan.” The said one passed by Jisoo and greeted Jeonghan with a smile that almost blinded the raven, he knew Seungcheol was always bright but not this bright. He almost resembled an annoying sun with its rays puckered Jisoo’s eyes right now.

Seungcheol put down a picnic…pouch? Jisoo frowned. Were the two about to have a picnic? Right now? Were they serious?

“Jisoo?” He looked at Jeonghan calling him. “Sit down with me, please?”

Jisoo’s brows were already knotted, but now he knotted them even tighter. “Are you really having a picnic at this place?”

“Yes..?”

The raven stared at the innocent expression on the other’s face. He didn’t sign up for this.

“Just join us, Jisoo.” Seungcheol abruptly said. “You ought to stop that habit of yours of overassessing stuff.” The brunette grabbed his arm. “Why don’t you just enjoy things at face value, you know, like, it is what it is.” And he pulled him gently. “C’mere and sit down.”

Jisoo begrudgingly listened, sure he couldn’t do anything with two puppies at his feet bugging him to do as they said.

“You don’t like it?” Jeonghan sat next to him, wearing a concerned expression. “Not really.” Jisoo shrugged, his frown ceased slightly, somehow he didn’t like it when the blonde got sad or showed any similar emotions. “I was just surprised, that’s all.”

Seungcheol stared at him, smirking before going back to rummage through his picnic pouch. “I guess you didn’t remember then.” He pulled out a pastry box, some cutlery and tissues. “I told you yesterday when we were going home that we would be having a picnic.”

Jisoo sighed. It’s not like he was listening yesterday. “Okay.”

The brunette smiled. “Jeonghan, I’ve prepared what you like here.” And the said boy climbed over Jisoo’s lap to admire the pastries as Seungcheol removed the box lid.

“Huh?” Jisoo wondered. “I thought this was supposed to be a picnic.”

“Well, clearly this is not a real one.” Seungcheol said it as a matter of fact. “But Jeonghan liked pastries, and we have free time also. So why not?.”

Jisoo looked at the blonde. “Do you like pastries?”

“Yes!” He nodded enthusiastically. “My dad always makes them for me, but they limit the amount every time I eat so…”

“Well, now you can have them as much as you want.” Seungcheol urged him. “Take a bite. I promise you it’s delicious.”

Jeonghan gladly did as he’s told.

The boy carefully went over all his choices inside the box and finally picked one and quickly bit into the bite of it, eliciting twinkles and stars in his eyes like god hid a whole universe in those brown eyes. He talked around his cake about how grateful he was for the pastries Seungcheol brought and how this was his best day ever.

“Don’t mention it.” Seungcheol gently wiped a crumb of cake on the corner of Jeonghan’s mouth. “I’m glad you like them.”

“Finish eating, Jeonghan.” Jisoo sighed, but weirdly this time he found the other kind of endearing. “Or you might spill something.”

The boy mumbled a shy sorry with his mouth full.

Jisoo diverted his eyes away. He glanced to the sky, watching the wind play with branches of leaves, swaying them lightly and if he stared at it long enough he might see some little creatures dancing around the green.

He then brought his gaze down, listening to the two boys beside him while closing his eyes.

For once, he felt nothing.

For once, his inside felt like a silent sea.
