—————————————————————————
I felt like I had been running for an eternity. Somehow, after 3 miles around the track, Richard still hasn’t gotten his acceptance email, and he wouldn’t leave the bleachers until he got it. School had finally gotten out and it was now the weekend, which I had planned with hours and hours of reading the new shipments work got of used comics.

I would be long gone by now if Richard wasn’t my ride to work. We were going to be late to work if we didn’t leave soon but that doesn’t stop him from staring at his computer, continuing to refresh the page to see if he got into UCLA.

Richard Abernathy had become my best friend in just a year. We meet working together over the summer at Booktown, a book and comic store near my house. Being the only high school workers had naturally pushed us into a friendship.

“Richard! We have to go! We’re late!”

“You are always late! Why are you being so anal about being late now?!”

“I don’t want Derek all up my ass again about being late!” I yelled from track, bending over to catch my breathe.

“No! We aren’t leaving! I need to know now! I cant drive if all I’m thinking about is this!”

“What if it doesn’t come for like another hour. We aren’t staying here for that long.” I said as I started walking up the steps and sitting near Richard.

“If we have to we will. You have no choice but to wait.”

“I’m going to steal your car and leave you here overnight if we don’t leave in the next 5 minutes. We’re already late.”

“I don’t care that we’re late! This is my future, my ou- wait, the emails there.” Richard said looking over to me.

“Open it then.”

“Just hold on.”

“For what!?”

“I need to prepare.”

“Just open the damn email already.”

“Ok, ok.”

How could someone be so slow at clicking one button!? That’s all he had to do, move the cursor then click the email and he’ll see if he’s in and then we can lea-

“Thank god! I got in!”

“Ok, so proud of you, I knew you would. Now, let’s go.”

“You could show a little more excitement.” He said while packing his bag.

“I knew you were going to get in. They’ve been keeping an eye on you for the past 2 years.” I told him as we walked to the car. “Besides, it’s not like you really choose to go there.”

“Yes I did! What do you mean?”

“Oh come on man. You just wanted to go there cause you know who is going to be there.”

“That’s is not true.”

I just looked over to my poor, infatuated friend and he rolled his eyes at me.

“Maybe it’s true but that isn’t the only reason. I’ll get to play basketball and get my scholarship while still studying botany. It’s perfect.”

“It’s prefect cause the girl you’ve been in love with since who even knows is going to be there. That other stuff is just a bonus.”

“You are so annoying.”

“I think it’s very cute. Little Richard having a big time crush on his sister’s best friend who you’ve know for your whole life. Its like you’re made for each other.” I said while waiting for him to open the door with the biggest grin on my face.

“Just get in the car Bridgeton.” Richard said slamming the door.

“Well someones a little cranky.”

“I can’t believe your going all the way to California! You’ll be so far.” I said while hugging a pillow to my chest I stole from Hermione’s bed. I’ll make sure to ask to borrow it while she’s gone.

“Ya, but this is so exciting! I’m on their gymnastics team! And I’m in their art program! This is what I’ve worked for for so long and it’s here and I’m- I don’t even know I feel so happy!”

I smiled at that. I always loved listening to my favorite people talk about how happy they were.

“Good cause you definitely earned it.” I said as I played with the small tassels on the pillow, “And you’ll get to be all in the Sun and the beach. You’ve always preferred hot weather.”

“I think I’ll love it there. Everything about it just feels right to me.” She gave me a small grin, “Actually I know I’ll love it.”

“I’m sure you will. You better come back to visit. Oh! Or I’ll come! I want to learn to surf. I think I’d like that.” I wasn’t sure if I would actually like surfing but i saw a photo of my parents surfing one time. They always told me about their trips to California and brought us back souvenirs for Richard and I.

“Hermione! Come down we have to leave now!” Maria, Hermione’s mom, yelled from downstairs.

“Ok, I’m coming down!” She yelled to her mom. “Time to go.” She said as she turned to me and pulled me into a big hug.

“You better not ditch me for my brother.”

Hermione laughed at that. “I would never. You’ll always be my best friend.” I couldn’t help but give her the biggest smile. I don’t have many friends, well I don’t really have any, just people I know from Hermione and Richard, but I was so happy to have them. They’re the most amazing people I could’ve ask for.

“Thank you Hermione.” I said as she grabbed her bags and smiled at me. “Oh, and could I maybe borrow your pillow just while you’re gone?” I said kind of cautiously. Hermione could be very protective of her things.

“Lucy, I’ve told you a million time borrow whatever you want while I’m gone. Just don’t fuck up my room and there won’t be a problem.”

“Great. You just ruined my entire life’s plan.” I said grinning at her.

“Not funny.“ She said but I could see her smiling as she turned to the door. “Bye, Lucy.”

“Goodbye.” And now I’m all alone.

I had been living with Hermione and her parents since freshman year. Hermione and I both got accepted into Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts. The school was in NYC and I used to live in Brooklyn with my uncle and brother but since my mom and dad were best friends with Maria and Michael, Hermione dad, before they passed, they had been somewhat of another mom and dad to Richard and I. I couldn’t be more grateful for them. They had really helped us cope with losing them.

So, letting them take me in didn’t get a second thought from my uncle. He never really liked me anyways so living with them was much better than with Uncle.

I missed my brother too but even when I was living with him, we rarely saw each other. I was always busy with ballroom dancing or acting classes while he was always playing basketball or going to all the florist and trying to find out everything he could about plants. Maria and Michael had asked if he wanted to come live with them too, but he didn’t want to switch schools, and at least he got the good side of Uncle so he didn’t have to deal with his intolerable side.

We still called and text, if anything we communicate more now than before so it all worked out really.

I was finally going into my senior year and would soon be finding out if I would be accepted into NYU for acting. This has been my passion for so long, what I truly felt most confident in. Playing a whole different role and fully letting all the emotions out. This was my dream.

But having to wait for months to get my acceptance, not quite. That would be a nightmare. How am I suppose to wait so long to know if everything I’ve worked for has actually worked up into something? If I actually have talent and can be something more. These next few months are going to be my hell.

Lucy
—————————————————————————
My first month at NYU had gone by so fast. I moved into my own apartment only a week before school started September 1st, claiming to Maria that I had to find the perfect one until I moved out.

Maria was completely fine with me staying with her through college, maybe even my whole life, but I wanted my independence.

Thankfully my inheritance from my late parents was far enough to allow me to live in New York City and even go to the schools I had always dreamed of. And thankfully that money would forever be untouched by my uncle.

To have been able to do everything I’ve done and be set for life by the people who loved me most always made me feel warm inside. Even when Uncle would be yelling or would get violent, I could always find my happiness in thinking about my parents.

Even if I didn’t get to spend long with them, I still knew that they would do anything to make my brother and I happy. Even after they were gone, we could live whatever life we wanted all because of them.

I was walking to my seat while making sure my pink dress was untouched by the sandwich I just had during my lunch break. I paired it with a purplish-pink cropped cover up and my black knee high socks and platform shoes. As I was sitting waiting for class to start, sipping my coffee, when I started thinking about how my father would always take Richard and I to archery classes. Such an odd sport really. Just shooting and aiming. Don’t know how anyone really becomes an archery master. And yet somehow Father was.

Maybe I am a bit too. Well I guess was. I was already better than most my father’s friends and even Richard at the age of 8. Who knows where my master archery skills would have taken me if I stuck with it. Maybe the Olympics. You know, I actually remember watching the 2012 games with my family, just before my parents past. Oh how I would love to go Europe.

We’ll really I would love to go anywhere but Uncle alwa-

“We’ll be working with Carlos Rodriquez and the film department till the end of semester.” My professor, Layla Sayid, explained while walking to her seat. “The second years are working on their own short films and of course they need actors and we will be their actors!”

“They’ll be coming into the class soon today and Carlos and I will put everyone in groups, having 5 from each class and then you’ll be paired with a partner for the rest of the semester.”

I was excited that we would finally be working on a set. I had stared in a couple of short films in high school but it’s been a while and being on set was one of my favorite things about film.

We had been continuing to analyze a script from the other day when the film class walked in 20 minutes into class. Everyone was put in their groups and started talking about their films.

Carlos and Layla started pairing everyone up and when Ms. Sayid got to my group, every had a pair but me. Great.

“Sorry Lucy but I guess your partner isn’t here today. You can join Jamie and Rafael till he’s here.”

“Ok. Thanks Layla.” Class was over in 30 minutes and I had been listening to Jamie explain to Rafael the character she wanted him to play, finishing my coffee in the process. The door whipped open and I saw some guy walked in, looking around the room till he spotted Carlos talking to some of the students.

I was getting a bit bored listen to the pair so I focused my attention on the intruder. Chestnut hair, pretty tall, I couldn’t see the front of his face yet though. He was wearing black loose fitting pants paired with a white tee shirt and a beige shirt sleeved button up. I quite liked his fashion choices. He waving his hand around while he talked to Carlos, who was laughing at whatever he was saying.

The guy looked so calm though. How could he be so calm when he was 50 minutes late to class? And how could he just casually be talking and laughing with his professor?

I don’t get how people could just walk into class late without the care in the world when all I would be thinking about when I was late was how disappointed the professor probably was. Probably thinking I doesn’t care about my studies and my life if I could be so late.

I had been staring at the back of his head when Carlos turned his head and pointed over to where I was. Weird. Was he pointing at me? Oh, he is pointing at me.

The guy turned around and was looking right at me. He gave me a pleasing smile but then his face turned into a questioning look quickly.

I had been giving the back of his head a curious look the entire time I had been in thought. I caught herself and gave him a smile back as he started walking over to me.

He must be my partner.

Now if he was going to show up late to class everyday, I wasn’t going to have much patience for the rest of the semester. Hopefully this was just a one time thing and I don’t have to put up with this the whole rest of the semester.

I guess I’m speaking unfairly though. He could have a perfectly reasonable explanation to why he’s late. Who knows what could have happened. His parents could have just died for all I know.

I looked over at the pair sitting next to me. Jamie looked at me and shook her head with a little laugh.

“Don’t worry, he’s not always this late. Usually 20 minutes max.”

Had she been reading my mind? Was my face really giving away my impatience?

I was going to respond when the guy sat down right across from me.

“Hey! Sorry I’m late, I’m really never this late. I’m Gregory.” He said while giving me his nice smile.

I smiled back at him noticing the food stain on his shirt now that he was closer.

“Lucy and its no problem.”

“Ok good.” He responded while getting his computer out from his backpack. “Now if you don’t mind,” he said while leaning forward with a sly smile, “could you tell me what we are suppose to be doing.”

“You are suppose to be telling me about your short films and what role you would like me to be playing.”

“Perfect! Let me just pull them up.” He said as he snapped his laptop open.

“Perfect.” I said looking him over.

I had been staring at him with a bit of an irritated look. I felt like I had been sitting in class for an eternity just listening to what everyone had to say and I kind of just wanted to go home now.

I started looking at his eyes as he stared at the screen. Hazel eyes. Quite nice. Actually very nice. Also nice looking. He was really handsome. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone quite so handsome.

Why am I thinking this? He didn’t seem like someone I would want. From only 5 minutes of seeing him I already know that he was always late and that was one thing that I had absolute hated.

God, his eyes were perfect though. I couldn’t pull my eyes away.

Why am I thinking this! I just meet this guy!

It was to quite. That must be. I need him to say something. Or me. I just have to talk.

“So…” I said breaking the silence, “why were you late?”

“What?” He asked looking back at me.

“Why were you late?” I said, trying to sound more kinder than the first I said it. I think my irritation slipped in the first time. I don’t really know why I’m in such a bad mood.

“Oh, well I- uh.” He got quite after that. Why couldn’t he finish his sentence? It’s not a hard question.

“Why aren’t you answering?” I blurted out. I didn’t mean to say that but I guess I was getting impatient. I didn’t want us to slip back into silence and be left with my thoughts about him.

“I had an appointment.” He said looking over my shoulder then back to his computer.

I moved my head to the side observing him. God, he was so obvious.

“Why are lying?” She said with a small smile. Maybe I could tease him a bit to get my mood better.

“I am not.” He said looking back at me.

“Oh you’re not. Then how come you took so long to answer? And you look guilty. No one has taught you how to lie obviously.”

“How do you know if I’m guilty just from my face.”

“You’re eyes. They got a bit wide and moved around everywhere.” I said looking down at my notebook as I played with my pen. “And you’re mouth thinned. The most painfully obvious signs of guilt.”

He was staring me as I looked back at him, and I stared back.

His face wasn’t really readable now but it seems like he was thinking. Then he smiled at me.

I sighed, “Well, are you going to tell me the truth?”

“I guess that makes you a good student then.”

He looked back down at his computer. My mind went blank.

“What?” I was really confused.

“If you can read facials that easily I’d say you’re a pretty observant person and I think that’s a good quality in an actress.”

“Oh,” Why is it so hot in here now? It felt like I couldn’t think. “Well thank you then.”

“Of course.” He said as he gave me a sincere smile.

“But-“ I said, my grin back. I knew what he was trying to do.

“Oh my” he said with a sigh.

“You aren’t getting off the hook just cause you were being nice. Tell me”

“What?”

“You know.”

“I truly don’t. You must tell what it is you mean.” Liar. I could tell he was fighting so hard to hold back his grin. I squinted her eyes at him.

“You are insufferable.”

“You barely know me.”

“I know you enough to know.”

“I don’t think so.”

I sighed in defeat. “How have you not found what you’re looking for yet.”

“Oh I have.” He said as his grin came into full view.

“We’re already behind on the first day so start talking. What’s your film Greg.”

He told me about his story for the last 20 minutes of class. It went much faster than first 50 minutes of class. I actually like the story too.

It did help that we did get along pretty well but in only 20 minutes he had already teased me for how organized my notes were by saying, “It does the same thing without all the color and all those sections or whatever you’re doing. You could just simply write it.”

I tried to give him a stern look but he was smiling, which made me look down at my notes and smile.

“Just because you don’t have my talent of note taking doesn’t mean you should insult me.”

“I was not insulting you.”

“Well it sounded like it.”

He laughed at that. My mouth dropped open. Was he really laughing at me? “I promise it was not.” he was saying still laughing.

“I cant believe you’re laughing at me. What if I just simply enjoy my notes being nice and not all scribbled down.” I said confidently, as I looked down at his notebook and laughed. “I mean can you even understand that?”

“Yes I understand it. They are my notes.”

“Sure.”

“And that is all that matters. If I understand it.”

“Hmm. Ok. If you can understand them then I won’t judge but then you cannot judge mine.”

“Deal. Now you need to get focused Lucy.”

“I am focused Greg!”

“Not enough Lucinda.”

“Lucinda?” I asked like I had been insulted. He looked up at me and smiled.

“No never mind. You are more a Lucy.”

Chapter Text

The Bookworm, New York City
October 29, 2022
Lucy
———————————————————————————
I had stopped into my favorite book store in New York called The Bookworm. I went in here all the time when I could. It had been my safe haven since I had been living in New York.

It was similar to the one near home across from the comic shop Richard worked at. That place felt like a safe haven as well. Maybe that’s why I loved it so much here. So quiet and peaceful. Somewhere you could leave the roaring world. Maybe not forever but just a bit.

And that bit made me feel safe.

I had sat down on my favorite chair, a tall, purple velvet chesterfield chair, located in the back of the store near the comics, while smoothing down my black skirt. I paired it with a a forest green long sleeved top and black tights with my favorite black chunky knee high boots.

I opened my book and started to zone out the world, indulging myself in the words.

It felt like I had only been reading for maybe 30 minutes when a hand had blocked my view of the book.

I looked up, and of course I saw him, with his uneven eyebrows and hazel eyes smiling down at me. He was wearing a white t-shirt under his beige knit vest with a green strip and loose jeans. I will say I does have good taste in clothes.

“Hello Lucy.”

“I finally got to the good part and you had to interrupt.” I said sighing.

“I am so sorry to have interrupted you. I promise I’ll make it up.” Greg said while sitting in the chair next to me.

“Good cause you can’t just do that.”

“Interrupt your reading?”

“Yes! Especially when I’m at the good part.” I said with enthusiasm.

“Was it not good before?”

“No. I mean yes it was but it wasn’t the best. But it finally got interesting and you ruined it.”

“Why read it then.”

“Why would I not? It was only the beginning anyways. There’s still a lot to uncover. I’m not going to stop only from the first introduction.”

“Sure.” He said still smiling, trying to turn the book over in my hands to read the back.

“And it’s on my list and I must read everything on my list.”

“Of course you would.” He said, now grinning.

“What do you have?” I noticed he was holding a comic in his hand.

“Spider-Man: Blue.” He held it out for me to look at. “Some say it’s one of the best comics of Spider-Man.”

“So you are a reader?” I said while taking the comic and looking through all the art.

“A comic reader yes.”

“But not a book reader?”

“Nope.”

“Interesting.” I didn’t realize I had said it kind of judgmentally.

“Why are you saying it like that?”

“What?” I looked back up at him. He gave me a confused look. “I am not saying it like anyway.”

“You are. I can see you’re judging me.”

“No I am not. Why would I judge you?” Now I was confused. Was I making him feel like I was a judgemental person?

“Yes you are. I can tell.”

“You cannot.”

“Yup. Not even a month we’ve know each other and I already know you’re faces.”

I shook my head as I thought. Was I really giving off that impression? “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for you to think-“ “Lucy, I’m only teasing.” He said giving me a playful smile, “I don’t care if you judge me.” “I’m not judging you though. I promise.” I said as I gave him his book back. “I just figured you would be more into books because of your writing.” “Nah. I like the pictures better.” “Oh.” I had a burning question I couldn’t stop from escaping my lips. “Why are you so obsessed with my faces.”

“We’ll you are my actress. I need to understand the way you act.”

“I guess.” I sighed. I felt really bad now.“I’m sorry if it seemed like I was judging you. I really do promise I wasn’t. It just surprised me.”

“That I don’t read?”

“I guess I figured you did. Like I said, you’re writings really good.” I said as I took out my phone from my pocket forgetting I had to leave soon. “Figured you’d be really into literature.” I checked the time and didn’t realize how long I’d been there.

“I have to go.” I said while standing up and grabbing my bag.

“To get you’re coffee I assume?” Greg stood up and was now looking down at me. I just stared at him with a surprised look. How could he have know?

“I- how did you even know that? Are you stalking me Greg?”

“Every time I see you, you always have a giant coffee next to you. And now-“ he started looking around the ground and then looked back at me, “I see none.”

“Hmm.” I said with a grin on her face. “I think that you’re my stalker. You seem to notice a lot about me.”

“What can I say. I’m just a very observant person. I know everything.”

“Sure.” I said while turning to walk out. He started waking right next to me. “To know that stuff about someone can really freak them out you know?”

“Are you?”

“Very. I am petrified of you now.” I told him trying to give him my best terrified look.

“Well I will make up for it by getting you you’re coffee.”

“And you will get me a sandwich for interrupting my reading.”

“Yes ma’am.”

“Are you southern now?”

“No. I would hate to be southern.”

I laughed at that. “Well I can’t disagree with you on that. Some of the things they say confuses me. They talk like a 70 year old grandma. Freaks me out.”

“How does that freak you out?”

“I don’t want to listen to a 5 year old talk like that. Now I love kids, don’t get me wrong, but not when they’re saying bless your heart every sentence.”

He laughed as he opened the door to the coffee shop for me, which was right next door to the book shop. “I wouldn’t either.”

There was no line so I went up to the counter and ordered my coffee and sandwich. Then he ordered his sandwich and we sat down. I checked my phone again so I knew how much time I had.

“Are you I’m a rush?”

“What?” I snapped my head up.

“Are you in a rush?”

“How do you even- oh whatever.”

“Again, I know everything.” He said with a grin.

I tried to glare at him. “Yes. I over-read and I’m suppose to pick my friend and brother up from the airport.”

“Lucy!” The worker shouted. I got up and grabbed our things, taking it to the table.

“From JFK?”

“Yeah.”

“When?”

“Well I should probably leave now but my sandwich comes first.” I said as I unwrapped my sandwich and took a bit. “They can wait.”

“Wow. You are willingly going to be late. I didn’t think that could happen.” He said as he took a bit of his.

“This will be the only time. I’m starving and it’ll only take a second.”

“You would be late for a sandwich?”

“I said only this one time. They’ll probably not even notice. Takes forever to get out of the airport anyways.”

“True.” He told me, looking at me with question now. “So, you have a brother.”

“Yes, but only one. He’s not even a year older than me. Neither is Hermione.”

“And Hermione is?”

“My best friend. They both go to UCLA. Started last year.”

He was just staring at me. I was joking about the creepy thing earlier but now I was getting concerned just by his state.

“Why are you staring like that?”

“You’re the Lucy.” he said exaggerating.

“What?” I couldn’t help but be confused. What does he even mean by that?

“Lucy Abernathy?”

“Yes. Why?” I don’t know why he would bring that up at such an odd time.

“I- how did I not know.”

“How could you.”

“Well, I am your brother’s best friend.”

Now it was my turn to stare at him.

“You know my brother? Best friends?”

“Yes.” Suddenly it all clicked.

“I- he mentioned your name was Greg but I didn’t really put two and two together, I mean there has to be millions of Gregs. I don’t even know your last name.”

“Bridgerton.”

“Bridgerton?” What! Why is he saying this? No, he couldn’t be.

“That is my last name.”

“You’re a Bridgerton!” It seems a lot of things just slip out of my mouth around him.

“Yes.”

“How- I- how did I not know?”

“I guess you were never told.”

“You’re family owns one of the biggest movie productions in the world! How could I not have know you’re related?!”

He shrugged “I don’t go around shouting it everywhere.”

“Well someone would have said it before though. We’re partners, I should have at least found out somehow.”

“Well I never found out yours either.”

I was staring at him again. A Bridgerton? Not many could say they are a Bridgerton. Everyone the slightest bit interested in movies knows their name.

I was partnered with a Bridgerton! People who are known to make some of the best films in decades. And he would see all my work and have to judge all of it. Amazing! Just fucking fantastic! I think I’m freaking out a bit. How could I not have kn-

The sound of a crunch woke me up from my trance.

“Staring is rude you know.” He said with a grin.

“I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be rude.” He was right. I kind of freak out.

He gave me a small laugh. “It’s fine Lucy. Stare all you want.”

I was so schooled I completely forgot why I had been out. “I need to go.” I said as I hurriedly grabbed my bag.

“You didn’t even finish your sandwich.”

“I’ll eat it on the walk back.”

“I’ll walk you.”

I turned towards him. “Oh no you don’t have to.”

“No I want to. I have nothing better to do anyway.”

“Well, I guess if you want to.” I guess it wouldn’t hurt having some company. I started leading us the way back to my apartment.

“I’m sorry how I acted. Not everyone is partnered with a Bridgerton. Well not everyone’s brother is best friends with a Bridgerton either and doesn’t tell his sister. I guess he’s not really into production but still, how could he just leave that part out.” I rambled.

“What would you do if you did know?”

“Uh-“ I had to pause for a second. “I don’t know.”

“I think you do.”

I looked over at him to see him looking down at me. I did know.

“Maybe I would have tried to befriend you to know more.” I told him as I stopped next to my car.

“Like?”

“I have to go.” I said trying to change the subject as I opened my door.

“Can I come?”

“What?“

“I want to surprise him.”

“It’s like a 40 minute drive.” He couldn’t possibly want to be with me for that long.

“So?”

“So you wou- oh whatever just get in. I’m already late.”

I got in the car while he walked to the other side, sliding in as I turned the car on. I pulled out immediately and started heading to the airport.

We sat there in silence for some time. Maybe 10 minutes. We were just listening to the music on the radio.

I had so many questions though. My brain was A scrambled mess.

I looked over at him. He was just staring out the window leaning his head against it.

I turned my head back and tried to push all the thoughts and questions away. If I talk too much he would probably get annoyed with me.

I just needed to focus on the road.

Nope. That didn’t work.

I tried to focus on the song. I didn’t even know the song though. God, it was such a bad song.

That didn’t work either. It seems like I just got a million more thoughts coming to my head from trying to listen to the radio. It was getting to quiet. I just had to ask.

“So… how are you related to the Bridgertons?”

He took his head off the window and look over at me.

“My grandparents started it and my mother owns it now. Along with my brother and his wife.”

I stayed silent.

Now it felt like my head was about to burst.

“You want to ask more don’t you?” He said. I turned to look quickly at him. He seemed he was trying to analyze me.

I must had been showing it on my face, how curious I was of everything.

“Oh no. I’m sorry for asking. It’s none of my business.”

“Suit yourself.”

It got quiet again. I couldn’t help myself before I shouted out what I was thinking.

“You are a child of Violet and Edmund Bridgerton?!”

“Yes, well one of many.”

“And you didn’t wish to say any of that before?”

“Didn’t think it was really relevant.”

“So you have been on a real set? Like a full on production movie set? Big movie! Award winning movies!”

“Yes, I’ve been on a lot actually.”

“I- wha- how does one not even bring that up?!”

“I was more focused on the film I guess.”

“Right.” I felt bad now. It probably sounded like I was assuming something bad about him. “I’m sorry I won’t ask anymore.”

“How many times a minute do you say sorry?”

“What?”

“You’ve said it like a million times. And in class all the time.”

“I’m sorry.” I said it before even realizing.

“Lucy!”

“I- what am I suppose to say? It’s just who I am I guess.”

“I guess it is.” He looked back out the window like he was thinking.

“We’ll do you think it’s a bad thing?” I asked. I was too curious. I seemed to always want to know what he thought.

He looked over at me. “To say sorry?”

“Yes.”

“No. You just- you don’t always have to be sorry.”

“Well if the persons hurt I’m going to say it.”

“I’m not saying don’t say it, its just you always seem like-“ he stopped.

I hated when people did that. Just finish what you’re thinking. If your already half way into the sentence you should just it finish. You’re already thinking it anyways.

“I seem like I’m what?”

“Like- you’re too nice sometimes.”

“How could someone be too nice?”

“You always think about what everyone else feels. That’s what it seems like.”

“You say that like it’s a bad thing.”

“It’s not, but, I think that maybe it holds you back from what you want to say.”

I thought about what he said for a second before responding. “I guess if it seems like they don’t want to listen I’m not going to talk.” I said truthfully. It seemed like something I could say around him.

“Many people would like to hear you. Trust me.” He was looking out the window again.

I didn’t know what to say to that so I just stayed quiet. I couldn’t fully believe what he was saying though.

“What do you want to know?”

It took me a second to realize what he was talking about before responding. “Nothing.”

“Don’t lie, I know that you want to know more.”

“I don’t.”

He gave me an annoyed sigh. “The first time I was on a big set I was 8. It’s really an amazing process-“

“Greg, you don’t have to tell me anything.”

“Lucy, I want to.”

I looked over at him. He was staring at me with a determined but sincere look. I knew he would just continue to speak anyways.

“You might as well let me tell you. We’re stuck in this car for another 30 minutes.”

“Ugh! Ok.” I sighed. “Fine then, what was it like?”

We talked the whole rest of the way about it, and when we were getting out of the car, and walking to the spot we were meeting them.

It was nice listening to him. He sounded so passionate and proud of his family when he talked of their work. And the things he got to see and be apart of, I wished for that one day.

“No wonder you want to be a film graduate.” I said as they sat down on a bench close to the meeting spot.

“I guess my family did influence my decision, but I really do like producing. And I’ll get to work for my brother when I’m done with school. I’m excited about that.”

I was about to say something but was interrupted when my phone started to ring from my pocket.

“Hey, Richard.”

“Hey. Where are you?”

“The same place as last time.”

“I told you she would be there. She told us the last time she called.” I heard Hermione say in the background, which made me smile.

“You don’t have the best memory sometimes. And she might have changed her mind.”

Hermione scuffed. “Lucy would never.”

“Where are you guys?” I asked interrupting my brothers side conversation.

“We’re pretty much right by it. See you in a minute.” he said before hanging up.

“He always says Hermione has the worst memory. He’s such a hypocrite.” I said as I put my phone back in my pocket. “He can’t remember anything other than what he learned about some plant.”

“He is a hypocrite. He would always say I have the worst taste in comics and then I’d catch him reading it.”

“I still love him though. You can’t really help it.” I said as I was looking out for them. I thought I could see them in the corner of my eye walking towards us. “I think I see them.”

I stood up to get a better view and finally saw them. Hermione started to run towards me and then in a second threw her arms around me, almost knocking me over.

“I missed you so much!” Hermione said as she squeezed even harder.

“Hermione! I can barely breathe.” I said, out of breathe as I laughed.

Hermione gasped dramatically. “So you didn’t miss me? And I thought we were best friends!”

I laughed. She could be so dramatic sometimes. “I miss being able to breathe.” I said as Hermione let go of me and I gave her a big smile. “I missed you too.”

Hermione looked over my shoulder. “Who’s that?”

“That’s-“

“Greg?” Richard said with a confused look as he joined us. “What are you doing?”

“Can I not surprise my best friend?” He said with a grin on his face.

“Why are you with my sister?”

“We’re old friends.”

“We know each other from class.” I told them.

Richard looked over at Greg. “That doesn’t explain why you’re with her.”

“We’re partners and we ran into each other before I left. He asked to come so he came.” I said. There seemed to be sudden tension between them. “Are you ready?” I asked.

“Yes. I’m over airports. I need to get out of here.” Hermione said. She looked over at Richard who was still staring at Greg.

“You ready?” Hermione asked nudging him with her elbow.

“Ya let’s go.” He said as they grabbed their bags and left.

Lucy’s Car, New York

October 29, 2022

Lucy

———————————————————————————

“You need to come down Lucy. I need someone to shop with. Everyone I know takes forever and when I take forever they complain.” Hermione said with an annoyed sigh. She was sitting in the front with me and Richard and Greg in the back. “You’re my perfect shopping partner. And you need to see all the shops down there.”

“I will. I promise.”

Hermione had passed the time by talking about how great California and UCLA was. By the time Hermione was done talking, we were already almost at her house.

“So you guys are friends now?” Richard said interrupting their conversation.

“I guess. Richard, we are partners.” I responded. I thought he was acting weird. So was Greg.

For someone who claimed to be best friends, they had barely said a word to each other.

I looked through the mirror and saw both of them on their phones.

“You need to come down soon though. Last year you barely came down.” She said as I looked back to the road.

“I know. I’m sorry. It just gets so busy with school and then I have to make sure your free. At least we got to spend the summer together. Well kinda.”

“Enough about me. How’s school? Are you now a sensational actress, everyone fighting to get you booked for their films?” She asked as she nudged me in the side.

“Hermione, people barely notice me in class. Do-

“That is not true.” Greg interrupted looking up from his phone.

“Yes it is and you know it.”

“Just because people don’t always say it, everyone always has their eyes on you when you act. I promise, everyone knows you’re one of the best.”

“Stop.” Why was it getting so hot?

“I know many people who wished you were their lead.”

“Lucy, thats great!” Hermione said while  turning to her, giving me the biggest smile. “You’re doing amazing then! I knew you would.”

“I wouldn’t say amazing.”

“She’s doing amazing.” Greg corrected. I looked through my mirror, glaring at him. I thought he was trying to joke around, but I caught his eyes and they surprised me, they looked sincere, honest.

He gave me a smile and looked back down at his phone. I looked back to the road and felt myself blush. I need to stop.

“I can teach you to surf now. I’m a pro at it. Richard tho-“

“I’m amazing at surfing.” He said looking up from his phone.

“Remember when-“

“That was one time. It never even happened again.”

Hermione was now laughing. “It’s ok Richard, not every can be as great as me.”

Richard sighed as he looked back down at his phone, “No they can not.” He murmured.

I looked over at my friend and could swear I saw her blushing. She always tucked her lips in when she was trying to hide her smile.

Now I wasn’t blind when it came to Hermione and Richard. I knew how madly in love they were with each other. Always snuggled up when they could, teasing each other, having the most random conversations.

I remember the first time I noticed how in love they really were. I knew they liked each other before but in that moment, I knew they were meant to be for each other.

I was 15 and Richard and Hermione 16. We had just come back from one of Richard’s friend’s Halloween party. I had been the designated driver, except there was no driving, I just had to walk them home, so Hermione and Richard could do whatever they wanted.

I was usually the designated “driver” whenever we went out. It was just easier letting them have their fun. They deserved it. And it made me smile how ridiculously drunk they always got.

I was dancing with some guy that was in her class while Hermione and Richard somehow kept getting shots. I had no idea where they even got them. Richard did know everyone tho.

Soon Hermione had dragged him out on the dance floor. I couldn’t help but laugh at how ridiculous they looked. Neither of them could dance when they’re sober, so drunk, it was horrid. They could barely even stand and had to help each other just to stay up.

I was still pretty close to them and could hear Hermione talking about the most ridiculous stuff. She never really talked like that with anyone other than Richard and I.

It made me smile. I liked that her best friend found so much comfort in my brother. Hermione didn’t always like to go out, but she still did, and Richard would always be by her side, bringing out the real Hermione.

I looked at my phone to check the time and when I looked back up I didn’t see Hermione anymore, just Richard who quickly squatted down to the floor. Then I saw Hermione, laying on her butt, just laughing. Richard tried to help her up but since he could barely even balance he fell too. Right on his ass.

And now they were both just laughing. I thought they were ridiculous. And extremely drunk. They did this all the time when they went to parties. They always ended the night so hysterical, laughing at who knows what.

It’s like their minds were connected some how.

I told my dance partner I had to leave and started walking towards them.

“Richard, we have to get up.” Hermione said trying to whisper, but failing miserably.“We’re going to get trampled.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll protect you.” They we’re just sitting criss cross on the floor laughing at each other. Richard made a circle with his arms around her.

“What is that going to do?”

“It’s protecting you.”

“It’s doing nothing though!” She couldn’t stop laughing.

“It’s like a protection spell.” Hermione couldn’t stop giggling as he said that.

“You guys ready?” I said as I came up to them.

“I don’t know. It’s quite comfortable down here.” Richard said while starring at Hermione with the biggest smile.

“I think we’ll stay a bit longer. No one can get to me when my protector is one of the strongest in the kingdom.”

“Yes, malady. I will always protect my Queen.”

“Oh! Well how thoughtful of you my knight.”

I didn’t know how I was going to get them off the ground, especially since they were so determined to stay.

“If you get up we can get ice cream.” I said, trying to negotiate with them. I knew how much of a sweet tooth the two of them had, especially drunk. Bribing always worked with them.

They both looked over at me, and then back at each other. Hermione put up her hands on the side of their face, like they were having there our private meeting.

When they were finished, they both nodded at each other and then turned their attention back to me.

“We have come to an agreement that we will get up as long as we get ice cream with hot fudge and caramel.” Richard told me in his most formal voice. “Do we have a deal?”

“Yes, yes we have a deal. Now please get up.” I pleaded.

“We may need some help.” Hermione said while giggling.

“Oh yes, I’m sorry.” I asked someone around mr to help get them up and then hanged them around both my sides as I walked them towards the door.

I took them back to the Hermione’s house, which luckily was only about a 10 minute walk, and left them on the couch.

“Lucy, can you please put on The Princess and The Frog.” Hermione said as she laid her head on Richard’s lap.

I just shook my as I got the remote and turned it on. Hermione has seen this movie about a million times, but she always loved it every time. Who could blame her tho.

“Now where’s our ice cream sister?”

“You two are ridiculous. So needy.” I huffed as I  walked towards the fridge and got all the stuff out I needed. I  made all 3 of us bowls, making sure there’s had extra sauce on it, and took 2 over to them. I was their own personal bartender. Except with ice cream I guess.

I just sat down at the kitchen island, watching them and eating my ice cream.

“Richard,” Hermione said as she poked his side. “Did you know that soft drinks are called soft cause hard drinks are alcoholic?”

He looked down at her and chuckled. “Yes I did.”

“Oh, nevermind then.”

“But did you know that flowers have a whole language built for them.”

“What!”

“It’s floriography.”

Hermione giggled. “Only you would know that. You’re like some plantologer.”

“I don’t think that’s a word.”

“I guess it is now.”

“Yes.”

“Ok,” she said with a slap of her hands. “If I was a flower what would I be?”

“You would be-“ he was in deep thought, squinting his eyes down at her. “A red chrysanthemum.”

“What did you even say?”

“A red mum.”

“Mom?”

“Muuum.” He said sounding it out for her.

“So we are British now?”

“If that’s what you want.” He said while imitating a British accent.

“Well, Richard did you know-“ she said with her British accent.

And this went on and on, with the British accents, until they feel asleep. That’s when I knew. The way they looked at each other with so much comfort and joy. The way that neither one of them were never like this around anyone else, except me. And I loved that the 2 people I loved the most could be so happy simply in each other’s presence.

I knew that they were ridiculously in love with each other.

“Soo-“ Greg said from the back, breaking my thought. “Why are you two even in town.”

“Because it’s Halloween!” Hermione said a little to excited.

“You’re missing school for Halloween?”

“Yes. It’s a tradition for all of us to spend it together.” I said. “It’s the best holiday of the year. And Hermione will not miss it no matter what.”

“It’s a perfect holiday. We get to dress up like whatever and get a bunch of candy and black out. It’s perfect!” I gave her a small laugh. It was more like Richard and her blacking out while I made sure they stayed in one piece.

“We’ve done it since we can even remember.” Richard said. “It was our moms favorite to dress and match Lucy and Hermione up in matching costumes.”

“And we will not break that tradition.” Hermione said looking over at me with a stern face.

“I wasn’t the one saying not to come. That was Richard.”

“I only said that cause I’m missing so much school.”

“But now you get to spend time with all of us!” Hermione said looking back at him with a smile.

“Yes, I guess.” He said with a sigh.

I pulled into Hermione’s driveway as I took in the familiar feeling of walking back everyday with Hermione from school, and the familiar feeling of coming back from my dance classes almost every night.

I love this house. It always felt like a home to me.

“I can’t wait to see mom and dad.” Hermione said as she rushed out the car door and ran to the house. Richard and I went to the back of the car to grab all their things and started walking to the house with Greg following them.

“This is the most excited I’ve seen her in a long time.” I said as we walked through the front door.

“Ya, she’s missed everyone a lot.”

I could hear Hermione and her parents talking in the kitchen. I decided I would give them a second before I joined them.

“Give me your bags I’ll take them upstairs.”

Richard gave me the bags and I walked up the stares, looking down to the kitchen at Hermione and her parents. I smiled the whole way to the rooms.

I knew why Richard has been acting so weird.

“So, my sister is her?” Richard asked turning towards me as soon as Lucy was out of sight.

“Richard I didn’t know she was even your sister till today. We didn’t even know each other’s last names.”

“And your friends?”

“I don’t know. We’ve never hanged out. We’ve only seen each other in class really.”

“And today?”

I sighed. I wasn’t really in the mood to get interrogated. “I just ran into her at the book store. And we talked and then I found out you were her brother so I asked if I could go. I was just bored I had nothing to do.”

“You said you weren’t going to lead her on.”

“What- I’m not leading her on! We’ve talked like 5 times outside of class. We’re probably not even friends yet.”

“You have a crush on her.”

“No.” Lie. But he didn’t have to know.

“Yes you do! You like her but you claim to barely know her. You want to be her friend, you want more.”

“What is so bad about that then?” So what if I had a small crush on her, what could I do about that?

“You know how you are.”

“How I am?” I said giving him a frustrating groan. I don’t even know what he’s talking about. “Please elaborate.”

“You get these crushes and then you get to know them for one second then drop them. Like you just give up on actually getting to know them.”

I was shocked. “That is not what I do.”

“It is! And you can’t do that to her.”

“I don’t like her. I don’t know her.”

“God you are stubborn!” He said as he rubbed a hand over his face. “You do. You’re just going to flirt with her and be all friendly and then just disappear. That’s what you do every time.”

“I don’t do that and I definitely wouldn’t do that to her! And we’re barely friends. Is it bad that maybe we just like each other’s company? That maybe we do want to be friends? C an she not have a friend?”

Richard just sighed. “She doesn’t need someone else leaving her so if you really do like her then you will put whatever feelings you have away and-“

Suddenly I knew why he was being so stern. “There’s no feelings.” He was just being a protective brother.

“And either keep your conversations strictly class relate or be her friend and stay.”

“You don’t have to worry about my feelings. There isn’t any and I’m n-“

“You called her the most beautiful person you’ve ever seen.”

“I-“ I don’t remeber this. Shit. “When did I say that?”

“I don’t remember when exactly. Couple weeks ago I guess, but that doesn’t matter. You brought her up like every day.”

“Couple weeks ago I was probably drunk,” I was most definitely drunk, “and she’s literally the lead in my film. I have to think about her.”

“Just promise me you won’t hurt her.”

“Richard, come on.”

“No, promise me.”

“I’m not going to hurt her. I promise. I’ll stay.”

“Good.” He gave me a relieved sigh.

“Now stop acting so weird.”

“I’m not acting weird.”

“You are. Everyone knows it.”

“You can be so annoying.”

“You missed me.” I said trying to his my grin. “Just say it.”

“No.” He said as he walked into the kitchen.

Ok, maybe I lied a bit. Of course I liked Lucy, I know I really like her, but it would probably go away. We barely know each other. Right? Yes! It would go away. We would be better friends anyway. Friends would have to be enough. It is enough, I think. This is all so confusing.

I heard Lucy coming down the stairs right before I was about to join them in the kitchen.

“Why aren’t you in there?” She asked as she walked over and stood right in front of me.

“I was just thinking.”

“About?”

“Uh-“ I paused for second and look towards the kitchen again, trying to find something to say. “I was thinking of- if I heard of any Halloween parties we can go to.”

“Oh,” she said, giving me her gorgeous smile, “and did you?”

“Ya there’s one near your apartments if you wanna go.”

“Of course I want to go!”

“Good.”

I had looked back down at her. She really was the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen. I wasn’t even going to try to lie about it.

With her blue eyes that always invade my thoughts, her 7 freckles that were so perfectly placed on her face, especially the one that kinda looked like Ireland. There was something about them, like they were hand pick to there spots. And her lips. God her lips. The lips I always wondered what it would be like to ki-

She cleared her throat. “Are you ready?“

“Um. For what?”

“To go into the kitchen?”

“Oh- uh yes.”

Friends were surely enough. It would have to be.

Chapter Text

Lucy Apartment, New York

October 31, 2022

Lucy
——————————————————————————
I smoothed down my costume as I examined it through the mirror, making sure everything’s in place. This year, Hermione and I decided to go as the black and white swan. I was the white swan, as I already had a white corset to go with the costume.

I clipped on the fake feathers to my hair and made sure my makeup was all good before I opened the bathroom door and walked into my room.

“Lucy!! You look so good!” Hermione said as she jumped up from the bed and grabbed my hand to take me out the living room.

“Thank you. You look perfect as always.” I told her as I examined her eye makeup. I need her to give me makeup lessons one of these days.

“I do, don’t I?” She said giving me a grin.

“Ohh Hermione, always humble.” I saw my brother sitting on the couch in his typical Darth Vader costume he does every year. I swear I could see him drooling as he looked over to Hermione.

He opened his mouth to say something, but I was faster to make sure he didn’t embarrass himself with whatever he was going to say. “Where’s Greg?”

“He just texted me saying he just got downstairs. I told him not to come up and we’ll meet him down there.”

“Oh!” I said as I made sure I had everything. “We should go down now. We shouldn’t keep him waiting out there.”

”Let’s go then.” Hermione responded. We walked out the door and towards the elevator when Richard started digging around in his pocket.

”Shit. I think I forgot my phone. Can I have your key Lucy?”

”Yes, let me find it.” I started to open my purse when Hermione pulled out a key faster from her corset.

“I got it! Follow me Richard.” She said as she started walking back to my apartment still facing me. “Lucy, we’ll meet you and Greg downstairs, ok?”

”Sure.” I said as the elevator door pulled open. I pushed the button to go downstairs and mentally checked off my list to make sure I had everything. I didn’t plan on drinking much so I decided I would bring my purse instead of cramming stuff down my corset.

I checked my costume one last time before I walked out the building doors. I saw him sitting on a bench close to doors watching some drunk couple clumsily walking towards a restaurant as their friend in the back cautiously watched them, making sure they didn’t face plant or go the wrong way.

“Just to warn you, that will likely be what Hermione and Richard look like by the end of tonight.” I told him trying to warn him of their drunk adventures.

He snapped his head towards me, probably startled by my sudden presence. He looked me up and down and opened his mouth to say something, but shut it quickly.

I couldn’t stop the heat from inside my body as I gazed over his costume. God! Why did it get so hot whenever he was around?

I think he was wearing some superhero costume but I wasn't really sure who. He was wearing all black. He wore a tight, long sleeved shirt, his muscles clearly visible and semi loose pants. He had on black gloves and was holding a hat and 2 wooden batons too. Hmm. Interesting. I’ll have to remember to ask who he is.

I decided to break the silence as he looked back at my face, “And the friend in the back will most likely be me leading them to Sweet Paradise.”

”Sweet Paradise?”

”It’s the ice cream shop down the street.” I pointed over to it. “They go everything time they visit. It’s their favorite.”

“Of course. Richard always talks about his dessert adventures with Hermione.” He said, seeming to laugh at the thought.

“Oh yes, they’re secret “dates” that aren’t dates according to Hermione.”

He gave me a questioning look, “So you know?”

I gave him a confused look back. He lost me, “About what?”

”Uh-“ he said while scratching the back of his head, looking like he was contemplating if he should speak or not.

”Greg,” I said annoyingly while I sat next to him and nudged him with my elbow. “Tell me.” Now I had to know what he was going say.

”Well- I mean I don’t think I should say this but-“ he sighed as he ran his fingers through his gorgeous hair, “that Richard likes Hermione.”

Ohhh. That’s what he was talking about.

”Greg.” I responded as I turned my whole body towards him, raising my eyebrows. “Did you really think I didn’t notice? It’s my brother and best friend. Of course I know.”

“How did you even get a key?” I heard from doors, retreating my attention over to them.

“Well, I may or may not have begged Lucy for one.” Hermione responded. True. She begged me to give her one after her parents where pestering her about her relationships.

“It would only be for emergencies,” she told me when she had asked for a key. I was trying to tell her she just needed to ask and we could go get one, but I couldn't get it out during her ranting and begging. I knew she just needed to get it off her chest so I just let her talk.

“Why would you even need one?” Richard asked, stopping right next to the bench.

“It's for emergencies, Richard.” she said with her hands on her hips, giving him a stern look. “You never know what could happen.”

“Are you guys ready now.” Greg said, stopping their conversation as he got up, putting his batons in his belt and black hat on.

“Yes! Lead the way.” Hermione said as she took a step back, gesturing with her hands.

Greg took us only a couple blocks down from my apartment. I could hear the music blasting from outside as we walked down the street.

“Here we are.” He said stopping in-front of the steps.

”How big is this party Greg?” Richard said as we all looked up at the massive house. It was 3 stories and beautiful, all decorated for Halloween with cobwebs and caution tape.

“Well, it is one of the biggest Halloween parties every year so it’s pretty big.” He said smiling at us.

“Hey, Greg!” The security guard said as he gave Greg one of those guy hand shakes. I never understood those to be honest. Why do they have to do it every single time to every person? Doesn’t make sense.

”Hey, Nick! Where’s Devon?”

“Second floor.”

“Thanks.” Greg gave us a head tilt telling us to follow him as he went through the door.

Oh. My. God. I think the whole NYU school is here. We went up the stairs to the second floor and Greg lead us over to the bar.

Yes. There’s a whole bar and like 5 bartenders. What kind of party is this?

”This is a big upgrade from high school parties, that’s for sure.” Hermione said as she looked over the room, now whispering to Richard.

I turned my attention to Greg. I was standing right next to him as he was leaning over talking to one of the guys behind the counter as he poured 4 shots.

I’m assuming those are for us.

”This is Lucy.” He said, having to shout over the loud music, “And those two are Richard and Hermione.” He said while pointing over at them. “They go to UCLA.” They weren’t paying attention so the guy turned to me and smiled.

”Lucy,” Greg said leaning down to whisper in my ear, “this is Devon.”

I shuttered. Why am I doing this? It was much easier to hear him with him so close but I hate how my body reacted to his voice.

I mentally shook it off and gave Devon a smile. “Hey. Good to meet you.”

”Ever been here?” Devon asked.

“No, it’s our first time, Greg invited us.”

”Well, you’ll love it.” He said giving me a wink as he went over to some other couple, now pouring them some drinks. Greg thanked him as he walked off and slid the two shots down to Hermione and Richard, and then one to me.

“To your first Devon party.” He said as he clinked my glass, giving me a smirk.

“This is his party?” I asked as I got closer and stood on my tip toes. I knew he probably wouldn’t hear me since I kinda had a quiet voice so I had to get closer.

“Yes, and we have unlimited drinks so drink up.” I smiled up at him and I took my shot. I haven't drank in a while, so it didn't go down as smooth as I hoped. I've just been so busy with school but I was glad to be out again.

“We need more.” he said as he grabbed my wrist and lead me to behind the bar.

“You’re friends then? You and Devon?”

“Yeah. We have some classes together. And we're both on the track team.”

“You do track?” I asked as he started pouring 2 more shots for each us.

“Yes.” he laughed a little, “You sound surprised.” He gave me the glasses, and we took the shots, these ones going down a lot more smoothly.

“I just forgot we actually had sports. NYU isn't really know for that you know.”

He nodded his head as he leaned over to tap Hermione and Richard on the shoulder to give them more shots.

They turned around and gave him a weird look. “How did you get there?” Richard asked.

“I have my ways.” he said giving them a smirk. He turned around and started making 4 drink. He was actually good at it too. Weird.

“How are you so good at bartending?” I asked, watching him curiously.

“I bartend for some of Devon’s parties. It's fun just watching the party sometimes.” he responded smiling over at me.

“So you don't like partying?”

“It's not that I don't it's just I don't like doing it alone at a party like this. You know?” Understandable.

“Ya. So none of your friends come?” I asked as he gave us our drinks and I took a sip. I liked it. Fruity. Kind of like a sex on the beach.

“They do but they're all “working” except we don't get paid. More of a volunteer thing, but he lets of drink whatever at his parties we aren’t bartending.”

“Well, now you have us.” I looked over to where Hermione and Richard were but they had left. “Never mind,” I said, looking back to him as he was now looking where I was, “you're stuck with me.”

“Good. I have an idea.” He turned me around by my shoulders, placing his hand on my back.

Fuck. I really tried not to but I began to heat up. I wanted to scream. You know, it must just be all the drinking and anxiety. Yes. That’s all.

He lead me out of the bar and I started to practically chug my drink, trying to forget the placement of his hand or how warm it felt.

As we walked to wherever he was leading me, I spotted Hermione and Richard talking to some group of people. It reminded me of high school and how they always could make new friends everywhere they went.

Greg lead me over to an open couch and sat down as I followed him. I quickly looked down at his arm, seeing how his muscles peaked out from underneath his shirt. Why was that so attractive? I forgot to ask what he was supposed to be.

I poked at the spot I was staring at, even though I needed mean too, but it got his attention. “Who are you supposed to be?” I asked as I looked back up to him. I thought he would be looking out at the party but his attention was already directly on me.

I could feel my cheeks turn red at his stare. Thank god it was so dark in here or he might be able to see.

”Im Daredevil.” He said leaning in closer so we could hear each other better.

I gave him a weird look. ”Daredevil? Who’s that?”

”Marvel character. Have you really not heard of him? He’s like one of the most popular superheroes.”

”No. I don’t really know about all the comic stuff I guess.”

”I could show you them sometime if you want. I have a bunch. They can be pretty interesting you know? You may like them better than your books.” he said as he gave me one of his beautiful smiles.

I snorted. “You could never pull me away from my books Gregory. Nothing could.”

He laughed. “You haven’t even read a comic Lucinda. You never know what the future holds for you.”

”Wow. What a great fortune teller you are. I’m sure they’re great but books are my thing and comics can be yours.” I told him smiling up at him. He had taken his hat off again when we sat on the couch and I could finally see his gorgeous, wavy hair.

I thought about what it would be like to run my fingers through it, how it would feel. It was probably smoo-

Why am I thinking about this? I really had to stop thinking about him like this. I tried to take another drink but it was all gone. Oh. I guess I forgot I drank it all walking here. I mentally frowned.

“So what was your plan?” I said since I almost forgot why we’re here.

”Well-“ he said scratching his head, “I was maybe thinking that we could get them together.”

“Hermione and Richard?”

”Yes.”

”And how would we do that? Because I’ve tried and it failed every time” I had tried to do it a couple times before but they’ve both been stubborn.

“What did you do?”

“Well, I tried to hint to them that they liked each other but they didn’t really get that hint. I didn’t just want to tell them that they liked each other. I thought it would be better if they told each other instead. ”

I thought back to all the time I tried. Hmm. I guess I didn’t really try that hard apparently if they still didn’t figure it out.

”I say we just tell one of them and lock them in a room.”

”We can’t force them to be in a room together! Richard would probably faint if we told him Hermione actually like liked him.”

He smiled, “He may.” He laughed at that idea. I really liked his laugh. I really liked his voice in general. I could listen to him talk forever. “I think we tell them both and just see what happens. I mean they’ve been doing what ever they’re doing for years.”

It’s true. They’ve always been super close and Hermione is always with him. She always tells me about everything she does in California and I can’t remember the last time she wasn’t with Richard during all of this.

”Ok, but here?” I looked out at the party. “This doesn’t really seem like a romantic setting. And Hermione needs one to fulfill her love confession fantasy.”

”Why not? It can be romantic if Richard doesn’t screw it up. And they both have some liquid courage in them. Might as well use it.”

”Soo,” I said as I thought over everything, “I’ll tell Hermione and you’ll tell Richard but then what?”

”We lock them in a room.” He responded smirking at me.

I gave a sigh, agreeing to this plan. What else could we do? Probably lots but I was beginning to feel a bit tipsy and drunk Lucy is not the greatest thinker sometimes. It sounded good enough to me.

“Ok fine, but how do we actually get them in the room? I guess I can tell her in there but I don’t know how Richard will get in. Or how will I get out?” This all seems like so much planning for something that should have already been a thing a long time ago.

”I’ll just push him in a pull you out. Then we just see what happens. You know, we don’t need to plan everything out? We can just go with the flow.”

“No. With them apparently we do need a plan cause all my other “go with the flow” plans didn’t work.” I told him, sighing at the thought. “I swear, if they don’t finally tell each other they’re feelings by tonight I’m going to pull out all my hair.”

”Please don’t do that and it’ll go great. Trust me.” He said pulling me up by my hand.

The funny thing was that I did trust him. And I had only known him a month. I don’t know how or what made me trust him but I liked being able to.

”You go pull Hermione away into the 3rd room on the right down this hallway.” He pointed over my shoulder and I looked back to the hallway. “I’ll give you like 5 minutes and then I’ll bring him. Ok?”

”Yup.” I said as I started to walk away from him. Of course Hermione and Richard were still together so I had to separate them. They were still talking to the same group I saw earlier as I came and stood by her side.

”Hey!” She said as she noticed me. She had some new drink in her hand now.

“Hey, I have an emergency can you come with me?”

Her face filled with concern and I started to feel bad about lying. I just need to remind myself it’s for the better. “What’s wrong?”

”Just come with me please.” She nodded and I lead her to where Greg told me go. I looked back to see if I could spot him and I saw him in the same place I left him, staring at us as he smiled at me. He started to walk over to Richard.

I opened the door and shut it when we were both inside.

“What’s wrong?”

“There’s no emergency but I need to tell you something. And I’m sorry about lying but it is important.”

”Lucy! I was concerned!”

“Yes, I know and I’m sorry. Really I am but you both need to hear this and you need to stop running from it.”

”What are you talking about?” She had sat on the bed, now waiting for me to answer.

I guess I forgot to plan what I was going to say. I think it’s better to just say it all fast. Just go with the flow now.

”Richard.” That’s all I said. I mentally slapped myself in the face. Wow! Great start Lucy.

”What?” She was lost. I could tell.

”It’s about Richard. Well, you and Richard. Because everyone knows and I thought that you guys would know too but nothing has happened.”

”Know what?” She hesitated to say that as she was looking around. She knows what I’m talking about.

”That you two have been in love with each other for-” I waved my arms around trying to think, “for who knows and neither of you will actually do something about it!”

She was quiet now, looking down at the drink in her hands.

“Hermione.” I came and sat down next to her on the bed. “I know you two are in love with each other and I don’t think there will be anyone else for either of you. I think you should tell him.”

“You don’t think it will be weird?” She asked as I gave a relieved smile. I could tell that she was actually considering to tell him. Finally!

”Why would it be weird?”

”I-“ she sighed, thinking for a minute. “I don’t know. Just everything I guess. I mean it’s always been the three of us but I don’t-“ she looked up at me with concern in her eyes, ”I don’t want you to feel left out.”

Now I felt stupid. Why didn’t I see this?

“Is that why you haven’t told each other?”

“It would be different Lucy. Richard and I would be together together and not just friends together. Do you understand Lucy? I don’t want you to feel like I think he’s more important.”

“Hermione.” I smiled at her. “I’m sorry for making you feel like you couldn’t be with him but you can’t hide from it anymore. And I really wouldn’t feel left out. You have to know that.”

”Lucy. Don’t be sorry. I-“ she stood up from the bed as I followed,” I should have just asked you a long time ago and we would be over this. I was just kind of scared, you know? I just wanted to make sure he’s the one.”

I had the biggest smile on my face. I knew she was actually going to tell him. “And do you think he’s the one?”

She had the biggest smile on her face. I already knew her answer.

I pulled her into the biggest hug before she could respond. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this happy before.

“Just so you know,” I said as I broke the hug apart, “Greg is going to make Richard come in here.”

Her face blanked. “What?!”

”It wasn’t my idea. I said you would probably want a more romantic scene but-“ I couldn’t think of anything. I guess I didn’t really fight him on it to much. I guess I really did trust him.

“You two have been scheming?” She asked, now with a small smirk on her face. Why was she doing that?

”Why are you looking at me like that?”

“You know I never did ask you-“

She was cut off by the door opening a smidge with Greg’s head popping in the room.

”Lucy-“

“Send him in.” I said as I opened the door more, now seeing Richard behind him. He seemed calmer than I thought he would be. Maybe Greg had a magic spell he used on others to just trust him whenever.

I stopped next to Greg and smiled up at my brother as he started walking into the room, but before he entered he turned back to us.

“You two better not do this again, but thank you.” he said as he shut the door.

I giggled. When do I giggle?

I turned towards Greg and he was smiling down at me. “What did you even say to him? I thought he would be freaking out.”

”Not much.” He grabbed my hand and started leading me back to the party. He leaned down to whisper in my ear as it got louder. “We have to celebrate now for being the best match makers.”

I gave him what seemed like my biggest smile. I couldn’t wait. So much for not drinking much.
