Chapter Text

Lines said by the characters at the start and end of a full match in a game where one character fights another for a series of one or more rounds.

What we have here are ideas for quotes from all possible matches between four characters.

 Harrowhark Nonagesimus

Harrow from “Gideon the Ninth” mainly. I see her as a trap and puppet fighter. Probably way too powerful and gets nerfed at the first opportunity. Very slow walking speed, has a small hop back and forward for both directions instead of any kind of dash. But she can place dangerous traps that can hide in the stage and can pull out some big swings either herself or with a summon. For example: I imagine her playing like the Testament from Guilty Gear XX.

Gideon Nav

Gideon with her two handed sword like in “Gideon the Ninth”. Solid rushdown character only hampered by her lack of any projectiles. Very fast forward dash and good damage potential in the corner. We don’t see it in the books but it would be fun for Gideon to have great wallbounce combos.

Obviously you would think that a Samurai Shodown character would be best and Haohmaru would be a good idea but I think Ky Kiske would also be a fantastic example of how Gideon should play but clearly it would not work 100% as Ky does have a clear projectile element to his kit that is very important. So it would probably be great to add big impressive sword attacks you might find from BlazBlue’s Hakumen. But balancing such fast fun moves with Gideon’s cannon mobility would be a pain.

Harrowhark the First

Harrow as we see her in “Harrow the Ninth '' now a lyctor and carrying around Gideon’s sword. I actually see her as a big heavy tank character. Someone who it is difficult to smash backward or wall bounce but also then has low mobility options and a small jump. Being able to soak up a lot of damage is quite a grizzly link to what happens to her in the book but I think it fits. She should have some cool ways to hinder or hold her opponents so that she can hit them with her longsword.

Perhaps something similar to Nrvnqsr Chaos in that she is a tank character with a good excuse to change her exact hit box and she also can dish out heavy hits both herself and with delayable projectiles.

Kiriona Geia

You might think that with her cannon invincibility we should make Kiriona a slow tank too but she's still shown to be super fast. As she uses a rapier and knuckle knives I would say this is a great opportunity to lean in and make her a fast rushdown character with even more mobility than Gideon but with a much shorter range due to her swords. Has a lot of health and is very mobile but doesn’t do a lot of damage on each hit and has a short range. Like Nanaya from Melty Blood or Akihiko from Persona Arena.

Ianthe Tridentarius / Ianthe the First / Prince Ianthe Naberius

Ianthe should be a versatile character who is fun to use. Considering what we have seen in cannon her wide range of abilities could make her fit any fighting game archetype. But I definitely think it would be cool to use her fight against Silas in Gideon the Ninth to give her a teleport move to get behind people. Venom from Guilty Gear would be an interesting template as that would allow her to leave webs of blood and fat all over the stage but instead of activating them from afar or using them as traps as we have already given Harrow they would be activated and indeed perhaps changed with Inathe’s normals. She needs at least one counter or command grab that openly uses the trident knife. 

Someone who is better versed in stance or charge characters could probably come up with something completely different for Ianthe. I could also see her switching between two ‘stances’ as well as using a lot of charged moves.

Coronabeth Tridentarius / Lieutenant Crown Him with Many Crowns

I want to say aggressive rushdown character but we already have one in Gideon and we KNOW that Camilla will also be rushdown. A part of me really wants Coronabeth to be a revival of Sion from Melty Blood so we can give her a gun but it requires reloading. She has Gideon’s rapier but a shorter range. Instead give her the ability to hook people in from the mid range with specials that require a long wind up that leaves her open to a counter. The only issue would be how to represent it as a sprite in the game. Personally I would totally be fine with the idea of Corona/Crown using her rapier and gun up close but any of her wide arcs to just be the golden light of her charisma made so solid it can hit people. But that’s just me.

Cytherea the First/Cytherea Loveday

Cytherea the First is when she appears as a boss while Cytherea Loveday is her playable version. 

For Cytherea the First as she’s been the only person to use a giant construct in canon so far I thought it would make Cytherea the ideal large boss with a lot of health and big sweeping attacks like Dust of Osiris or Take-Mikazuchi for example. The construct is described as having both a long body and scythe-like limbs so there are plenty of options there for putting out troublesome hitboxes. It would be cool if the boss version of Cytherea had two health bars, one for the construct and one for Cytherea. Cytherea is harder to hit but if the player can KO the lyctor and the construct goes down too. That or just make Cytherea the weak point if the boss only has one health bar.

Cytherea Loveday would be a character with a huge amount of HP but with very slow movement and a short hop instead of a forward run or dash. She would also have a low jump and no air dash. This is because I think you can make an excuse for the Seventh House’s specialty of holding back the decay of the body to be portrayed in a fighting game as moves that slow or stop the opponent. So Cytherea is this slow moving character who has command grabs and throws and can use their slow/stop specials to close the distance with her opponent despite having so little movement herself.

Prince Naberius Tern

How do you solve a problem like Babs? I mean strictly speaking he should have a lot of the same moves as Ianthe but no necromancy. But he doesn’t have the opportunity to show us much to mark him out gameplay wise from other characters. 

Thinking about his fight with Gideon and his use of the trident knife it would be cool maybe if we make him a character with powerful counter moves. Heck I think it would be hilarious if we made him a character who can counter on block like Baiken back in Guilty Gear XX. However for his normals we can safely make Babs the Dan Hibiki to Ianthe’s Akuma. 

Oh yeah, if you beat Babs with a fireball his shirt should be blown off like King in some of the KOF games. We don't have anyone with a fireball yet but I'm putting that down now.

Camilla Hect

I held back from adding Camilla because I wanted to get a feel for this thinking about other characters first so that I can do Cam justice. In my eyes this game would be the kind of fighting game where every character can double jump and air dash once before hitting the ground unless I went out of my way to say they cannot, like Cytherea or Harrow the First. Camilla should definitely have these as well as a forward run and a double back dash. The double back dash can be the famous handspring from her introductory fight with Gideon and can be used to take her almost a full screen away with additional invincibility when you activate the second back dash. Camilla should have specials which send her forward as well so she can either rush the opponent with her run and normals or use a special move that propels her forward in a dash that ends in an attack. She should have good fast normals so that she can pressure opponents with. Quick attacks but unlike Kiriona these should all be clear hits that will deal proper damage if they connect.

In short Camilla is slower than Kiriona but deals more damage per hit. She also has the highest mobility.

Looking at this you might find that would make Camilla some kind of overpowered version of Shiki Tohno from the new version of Melty Blood, and you would be correct. But given that it is Camilla I assume no one would mind.

Palamedes Sextus

The issue with Palamedes is not that he’s a non fighter, he’s actually fought a lot of powerful characters. It’s just that these are often over in one big hit or happen away from the eye of the narrative. Pal’s only visible major fight is the use of a powerful thanagetic barrier on Gideon. Now if you don’t mind Pal not using his house’s focus (that kind of magic is more 8th or 2nd in my opinion) then we could easily build a fighting game archetype out of using that kind of energy transfer magic. Indeed this would make it possible to have Palamedes convincingly play like Akiha from Melty Blood. Using strong normals to push someone into the corner where he can do his damage. Obviously needs a super move where he explodes like Android 16.

The issue with both Palamedes and Camilla is that we are now dealing with characters who should function as tag teams with cavalier type characters fighting in front and the necromancers and similar at the back providing support. But this discussion would require its own chapter.

Harrow Nova (Harrowhark Nova?)

Harrow Nova is popular enough to appear in a fighting game as her own character. This is not a controversial idea. I was never super invested in the AU Harrows but I have seen the most engagement with and fan content for Harrow Nova. So I think people would love her as a secret character you unlock.

But enough about that. How should she play? Harrow Nova is clearly characterized as focusing on her flexibility and speed, as well as a rapier she also has Samael Novenary’s chain. Now the Blaze Blue fan in me absolutely wants to make her a fusion of everything I liked about Yuuki Terumi and Hazama. Give Nova Yuuki’s fast normals and running speed but also give her Hazama’s chain allowing her to zipline across the screen. There would probably need to be a limit of how many times she could zipline in a row. Having Harrow Nova play like Yuuki and Hazama also makes her the first character here other than Cam who can perform a half decent aerial combo.

Nona & Noodle

I had been hesitant to think about including Nona in this. Nona has such a short and difficult life that she was still able to find joy in. It felt inappropriate to pitch the idea of putting Nona into a game where other characters could inflict extended wall bounce combos on her. Doubly so when you consider all the violence that Nona has to suffer through at the hands of both the Empire and B.O.E. and people she trusted very much like Aim.

But, I do love a comedy fighting character so what about Nona somehow fighting after Nona the Ninth along with Noodle, who can talk now, along with all the other dogs that were mentioned in the character list that never really turned up in the story. Nona and Noodle are on screen all the time and the other dogs appear during special moves.

But how would she actually play? I imagine the most obvious but also best way would be to borrow the basic frame of Ken and Koromaru from Persona 4 Arena. Where two of Nona’s buttons bring out Noodle to perform his attacks but there is also an easy input to put Noodle ‘away’ so that he cannot be hit at the cost of needing a wind up to get him back into the fight. 

The big difference between Nona & Noodle and Ken & Koromaru would be that I would flip how the two work. Give Noodle wide sweeping normals that can be used in the neutral game or for long range hits (at the risk of Noodle being hit) while Nona deals damage almost exclusively up close. As both Nona and Noodle can attack at the same time they can cover for each other's recovery frames. They’ll be an absolute beast in the corner.

It should be highlighted that Nona’s attacks don’t look like serious actions. You have Nona pushing the opponent away or throwing out random items like a chair or her little personal whiteboard from school. With the exception of certain super moves where Nona gets serious and starts swinging stuff around two handed.

Nona’s sprite doesn’t appear crumpled on the ground like other defeat sprites. Instead she looks like she’s run out of stamina and gives up to sit on the floor with Noodle.
