Collapsed (saying goodbye, now)

Summary:

When Shigaraki and Izuku are stuck in a collapsing building together, bad things happen.

Whumptober Day 18: “Just get it over with”

I know this is super late but I haven’t had much time to finish Whumptober lately.

Also, this is sorta inspired by that one animatic where they both die at the end (don’t worry, they don’t both here)

Work Text:

Izuku crawled through the broken rubble of what used to be U.A..

Where was Kacchan? Where was Shigaraki?

Shigaraki’s wounds hadn’t been fatal, he’d probably still be alive somewhere. So where? Where was he?

Up ahead, he heard movement. 

It was hard to see, the only lighting coming from his just barely activated quirk.

Hesitantly, he called out, “Kacchan?”

The voice scoffed and said, “Hero brat?”

Oh.

It was Shigaraki.

That wasn’t exactly ideal, but it was unlikely that he’d try and kill him in such a confined space.

In a split second decision, Izuku said, “Shigaraki? I don’t want to fight you in such a confined space… Can we make a temporary alliance till we’re out of here?”

Shigaraki scoffed again, “And why would you hold to that?”

“I want to make it out alive, same as you.”

Shigaraki was silent for a moment. “Fine. An alliance it is.”

Izuku crawled up to him.

Shigaraki's leg was lodged under the rubble. No wonder he was so eager to get help.

Izuku carefully powered up his quirk to a higher percentage on his already strained arms, twitching at the pain and lifted up the slab of rubble.

It seemed eerily reminiscent of when he first saved Ochako. 

Except, here he was saving his worst enemy who could kill him at any moment.

Honestly, it probably wasn’t the wisest of decisions, but that was fine. Sure, his arms were so bent that they were close to breaking, but he was otherwise mostly uninjured.

Thank Kami for blackwhip being a long ranged weapon that Shigaraki couldn’t dissolve.

Shigaraki wiggled his leg out from under the rubble.

Izuku coughed and almost dropped it in reflex to cover his mouth, but was able to resist his instincts with a twitch.

Shigaraki glared at him, “Be more careful, hero kid. It’d be a shame if you just…” Shigaraki placed one hand on Izuku’s neck, pinky finger up, “disappeared.”

Izuku shook slightly but didn’t move.

Shigaraki still needed to remove his foot.

Shigaraki gave Izuku a curious look for his lack of reaction, but pulled his foot out of the rubble.

Izuku let go of the slab. 

The dust in the air all got kicked up again as the slab hit the floor.

Almost in unison, Izuku and Shigaraki each coughed.

Izuku’s eyes watered and tears dripped down, mixing with the dusty floor.

The ceiling rumbled. This wasn’t good.

“Come on, we need to get out of here…” Izuku said.

They quickly crawled out of the rubble, emerging into a less collapsed room where they could stand up.

With all of the dust settling near the floor, it was a relief to stand up to clearer air.

Shigaraki stared him down and Izuku stared back, shifting his pose into one of a fight. They were out of the worst of it now, it wouldn’t be unusual for Shigaraki to flip emotions now.

Slowly, Shigaraki backed down.

Snap.

Something above them crumbled and a terrible sound of crashing came down upon them.

When Izuku came to again, Shigaraki was laying next to him, impaled by a long piece of thick rebar.

His own head was bleeding, but he didn’t think it was that serious. He probably only had a concussion.

But, Shigaraki, the wound looked serious. Such a thick piece, in such a vital position, it was likely he wouldn’t be able to move, much less make it out of here.

Shigaraki stirred.

“Brat?”

Izuku crawled over, dodging the pieces of rubble on the floor, not caring that his knees got cut up. 

“I’m here…”

“Just get it over with,” Shigaraki said, his voice thick but unrelenting.

“What?”

“You heard me brat. I’m not making it out of this. Just… make sure they know what happened, okay? You’re a good one.”

Izuku nodded, tightening his resolve. Tears dripped from his face onto Shigaraki.

Shigaraki, who looked horrible in the green lighting.

“Goodbye, Shigaraki,” Izuku said to him.

“Tenko. Call me Tenko.”

Izuku gave him a pitiful look and said, “Goodbye, Tenko.”

He twisted Tenko’s neck gently in one strong motion.

Tenko went limp.

He mourned.

Thoughts? <3 They’re both so fun to write, but I’m not sure I nailed their characterization, so I’d totally take some feedback on it!
