Chapter 1: Preparation
Chapter Text
The back room of the daycare was bustling with conversation as you, your coworker, and Sun were getting ready for the big trip. Your coworker was a mechanic, and was working on Sun’s wiring. It wasn’t anything major. Just making sure everything was working properly so he didn’t ‘die’ during the trip.
The mechanic muttered, “Let me get this charger set up. They’ll have charging stations on the bus for all the other animatronics, but since you’re not really supposed to be going, you’re gonna have to plug your charging port into an outlet, so I’m installing a temporary port into your charging system.”
“I understand,” Sun replied formally. He always got pretty nervous when going to the repair center, so you, his handler, convinced the higher ups to let him have smaller repairs done inside his room. “I still can’t believe I convinced the owner to let me bring Sunny,” you voiced. The mechanic nodded, “The daycare is a huge profit for this place. Can’t believe this big guy is getting a whole week off for the tour.” Sun made a noise in agreement, “They’re doing three different concerts, too. I’m thrilled. And I won’t have to perform or take care of any little ones. It’ll be a proper vacation.” He then looked at you, “And of course, my lovely handler will be there to accompany me through every second~.” You smiled, “I’m afraid we won’t get to spend much time together. Whether or not you’re performing you’re still a highly intelligent robot, so you’re probably gonna have people running up to you to take a picture and have a chat.” Sun shrugged, getting a light slap from your coworker to stay still, “We’ll be in hotel rooms most nights. We can relax then.”
With that, his chest panel was shut, “Just- don’t over exhaust your fans. Take frequent breaks and all that. Technology has only come so far. Honestly, you’re the most hardworking animatronic here, so you should be fine. You’re probably used to it.” Sun chuckled, “Yeah, besides maybe the DJ.” You clapped your hands softly, “Yayy, all set. Let’s pack your stuff.” As you waved the mechanic goodbye, you and Sun got to collecting stuff that was used regularly to keep him in top shape. Especially the small tool box that allowed for small repairs as needed without taking trips to parts and service. Before midnight, you had all of Sun’s things packed in the sun and moon themed suitcase you promised them.
You poked his arm as he zipped up his luggage, “All set?” He nodded, “Yes. I believe that’s everything.” You reached a hand down to grab ahold of his face plate, turning it to face you. The robot closed his eyes in a faux flinch as you placed a kiss on his forehead. An obnoxious “mwah” noise released from your throat as your mouth parted from his squishy face. One of his eyes opened as he rubbed where you had kissed. Your hand rested on his shoulder for as long as possible as you slowly made your way to the door that connected the small room to the theater, “I’ll see you tomorrow morning. I wish I could stay but all of my stuff is at home.”
The rays on his head retracted, “Couldn’t you just— come back after you pack? I’d let you sleep until six. I promise!” You giggled, “I sleep here all the time, Sunny. And I’ll continue to do so after we get back.” He whined. You smiled, giving him one last pat on the head. Before you exited completely, you waved goodbye.
~~~
Morning came quicker than you expected. The alarm you set worked fine, though it always gave you a rush of fear every time it went off. The Fazbuses, buses that took individuals to the plex, wouldn’t be running for the next few days. Without Freddy and the gang, the building would be closed.
You made it inside the plex, noticing the tour’s double decker bus on your way in. It was completely silent which paralleled the always bustling screams and chatter from guests. The only thing that could be heard was the faint music that was used to add to the atmosphere. You used your staff pass to get into the main entrance, noticing a friend of yours was heading out to the busses waving to you, “Heyy, we’re getting ready in the atrium. There’s only handlers and animatronics in your bus and any other staff members are going in the smaller buses.” You nodded and waved back, “Is Sunny with them?” They stopped walking, “Uh— I don’t think anyone named Sunny works here.” You felt your face hot with embarrassment, “Oh, sorry, the daycare attendant?” They nervously laughed, “Oh, yes. Yeah. It’s in there.” You icked at the treatment of him, “Thanks.”
The elevator dinged and the doors slid open to reveal the staff of the plex running around to get everyone ready. Freddy, Chica, Roxy, and Monty stood in the center of the atrium. Tons of mechanics and staff members rushed to clean them up and make last minute changes. A figure stood to the side, looking so out of place from the frantic nature of the other bots. It was Sun. You felt for him; he was always left out of the group. No one wanted to visit the daycare, so he didn’t really have any animatronic friends.
You tiptoed to where he was; his back was turned. The animatronic had a sensor when someone was behind him, but with everyone running around, he must’ve assumed you were just another worker. You grabbed his sides quickly and made a little growl noise, making him jump out of whatever trance he was in. As he turned around, you giggled, “Helloo~.” His expression quickly lightened up when he saw you, “Good morning, Sunshine!” He grabbed your waist in return and lifted you up in the air, giving you a little twirl before letting you down. The other workers didn’t notice you two. Like you were in your own little world.
It didn’t last long, though. A S.T.A.F.F bot approached with a small pamphlet labeled “Handler Instructional Pamphlet” and handed it to you. You waved before picking up the pamphlet, “Thank you.” The bot stared at you for an awkward second before turning away. A robotic “Have a good day” sounded from its voice box before rolling away to the next handler.
“What’s that?” The daycare attendant interrogated. You handed it to him; he immediately started flipping through it. “Just one of those guides for taking care of you. I had to read one of those before getting my job, you know,” you responded. The animatronic looked up from the pamphlet, “Oh, really?” He then flipped to a random page, placing a finger on one of the pages, “Well it seems you’ve been forgetting one really important step.” You picked up on his bluff immediately, “Oh really? What would that be?” The animatronic hummed before kneeling down to your height. His hand lifted to his face and he pointed an index finger to his cheek, “Just a little kiss. To help me function properly, of course.” You put your hands on your hips in protest, “Oh really?” He nodded, “Mhm.” You put a hand on the bottom of his faceplate. You leaned in, with no intention to give him a kiss on the cheek. Just before you reached his face, you quickly turned up his faceplate and grabbed the pamphlet.
You slowly flipped through it as he recovered from your push, “Hmmm, nope I don’t think so… but it doesn’t say anywhere that I can’t.” Sun lightened up as your hands returned to the sides of his face. The animatronic’s rays retracted at your touch as you pulled him down to your face. You brushed a soft kiss on his forehead and let go immediately after. The robot rose back to his natural height, “Hmmm, yes now I’m working properly.” You have him a smile, “Good. Then let’s join the others.”
Chapter 2: On the Road
Summary:
You finally get on the double decker bus. No one will see us back here 👀.
Notes:
Hello everyone :]!! Hope you’re all ready for a nice bus ride. I did make this chapter a tad more romantic than the last but I haven’t explicitly defined the relationship between reader & moon yet. QPR at the moment! But I do hope to take it further. >:3c
Of course, I don’t think this’ll ever get into mature territory so don’t worry about that! I’ve seen a lot worse on this website so I’m 100% sure this’ll be way more tame than 80% of SunMoon fics. ALSO these guys will inevitably be kissing you so if you’re a permanent smile lover, I’m sorry.
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
After all of the security briefs, everyone headed to the buses. It made sense that the owners of the plex would want the animatronics to be safe; they costed a fortune.
All of the animatronics and handlers sat in a line waiting for the last minute bus preparations. You bounced on your feet in excitement while standing behind Sun, fidgeting with his waist skirt thing. Usually, you messed with his neck ruff, but he was much taller than you standing up, so you settled for the skirt. You leaned sideways to get a peek at the rest of the line. Ahead of Sun, Monty stood with his arms crossed, obviously mad about waiting in line. He was kind of— large. Seeing any further than him was a challenge. Well, it was, until chica danced around into sight, chatting with her handler. A hand on the top of your head spooked you out of whatever trance the other bots had you in. Sun slightly scratched the top of your head, “Excited?” You looked up, into his eyes, “Very.”
Finally, the final inspections were completed and the bus driver came out to summon everyone onto the bus. You and Sun were last in line, but that didn’t mean all of the seats had been taken up. Only five handlers would be staying on the bottom floor come night time. The main four would eventually be charging upstairs and the only animatronic staying on the bottom floor was Sun. This gave you a lot of choices, but with Sun’s encouragement, you chose to sit together in the back of the bus where an easily accessible outlet was right next to the very back seat. This meant you wouldn’t be close to anyone else, but it made life easier.
By the time you all got seated, (Which was the most dreaded process btw) the actual sun had begun to set, meaning you’d be with Sun just about an hour before the robot switched to Moon. Everyone was BUStling with conversation. Every once in a while Chica or Roxy came up with a random question and made everyone on the bus answer it. “Who do you think is gonna be fired first? The M.I.A food stand worker, the always-on-phone security guard, or Comedy Bot“ Chica shouted. Roxy scoffed, “Clearly the security guard! Why would you need to be on your phone for the ENTIRE shift? There are way better ways to waste your time.” Freddy looked nervous, “I do not think anyone will get fired. They are all very good workers. Um— even if they are not always attentive.”
Again, you and Sun were never really regarded as part of the group. This made you tune out the noises coming from everyone else and you just scrolled on your phone. That is, until your name was spoken. You looked up to see a bunch of eyes peering at you. “Well,” Roxy started, “Who do you think is gonna get fired?” You hesitated, but eventually caught onto the question, “Oh, uh, that girl from Management. The daughter of the owners.” Chica took a second to think about that, “Oh yeah. But I don’t think her parents will get rid of her.” That spiraled into another conversation and their peering eyes finally left your face.
You looked over to Sun; he had the window seat and was in absolute awe of the outside. His eyes were almost attached to the glass and he seemed to be mesmerized by the other cars and buildings. As the bus came to a stop, noises could be heard from the car next to the window. Two children in the backseat of the car were overjoyed at the sight of Sun. At first, he didn’t seem to know what to do. But he eventually made a heart shape with his hand. The two kids exploded with screams and the parent in the front seat yelled at them to calm down loud enough for you to hear it.
As the bus started moving again, Sun looked back to you, “Did you see that?” You nodded, “I sure did! I told you, you’re gonna be a star of the show whether you’re performing or not. Although—“ Your hand made its way to the side of his face, “you already kind of are.” Sun chuckled.
~~~
You were on your phone for about thirty minutes, not really thinking about the state of anything else. Everyone was still chatting in the front of the bus. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until you heard some mechanical noises coming from your side. Oh. It was dark outside. And the bus driver turned the lights off. Sun’s rays were retracting and his colors were shifting. You stared at the robot with a smile until he had finished transforming. Once Moon opened his eyes, you waved slightly, “Hey.” It took him a minute to come to, but he eventually smiled back.
“Good afternoon, Starlight.”
Moon quickly changed his posture to a more relaxed form. Sun usually had a formal and stiff stance, which apparently felt uncomfortable to his counterpart. He wrapped an arm around your back and gripped your side while resting on the window. This dragged you with him and forced your weight to shift onto his side. “Nice night, huh?” he whispered. You felt your face flush slightly, “Beautiful.” He smiled and the fingers around your side scratched your stomach. Moon’s face turned to face the window, “Wow, you’re right. I’ve seen beyond the windows of the ‘plex but— not like this.” You rested your head on his shoulder, “I guess it is pretty nice. I bet the concert will be gorgeous too.
The night quieted everyone’s conversations. The animatronics were low on power and had made their way upstairs and most if not all of the handlers had laid across their seats to sleep. You couldn’t sleep though; you felt pumped to be somewhere new with someone you enjoyed being with. Eventually, you traded seats with Moon so he could use the available outlet that was between the steps and your seat. You opened up your backpack of stuff and brought out his charger. After you plugged him into the wall, you attempted to climb over his legs to get into your side of the seat. Of course, he had to make it difficult and tripped you with his knee. You felt fear rush through you your heart before you landed safely on top of him. He laughed mischievously as you collected yourself and you stuck your tongue out at him in retaliation.
Eventually, you followed through with his attempt to get you onto his lap. The robot placed his elbow on top of the chair (which was almost arm rest height for him) and rested his faceplate on top of his hand. “That was easy,” he teased. You crossed your arms and laid on his chest, “It’s only the first night too,” you whispered back. The animatronic’s hand crept up behind you and softly caressed your back. The night went on like that for a few minutes. His fans clicked on because of your body heat, such a pleasant noise.
You were just about to fall asleep when you felt his other arm come around your other side. Moon pressed himself as close as he could without disturbing you. The animatronic’s internal temperature wasn’t the only one burning up. Maybe you needed a fan too.
Everyone had to be asleep by now. It would be weird if they weren’t, right? Well, it was probably weird that you weren’t. You were doing very important things, though. It was then that you felt a hand travel up your spine and onto your neck. You trembled at the tender touch of his cold metallic fingers. You unscrambled your hands from their cross-cross position and placed them on the seat of the chair to prop your face closer to his. With such little space between the two of you, it was a miracle that you hadn’t touched already.
It felt like such a cheesy moment. You stared into his eyes and he stared back. It was like a staring contest but with a lot of blinking on your end. It didn’t last too long, Moon leaned down and placed a kiss on your nose-bridge. Before he could fully regain his posture, you dove in and made contact with his lips directly. It was only planned to be a small kiss, but Moon wasn’t with the program. You leaned back down to break apart from him, but he followed suit. He wasn’t forceful enough to make the kiss last too long, so it eventually came to an end when he couldn’t lean in any further.
Your heart picked up its pace. A hand came up along the front of your neck and eventually, softly gripped your chin to pull you in for one last kiss. You really hoped everyone was asleep. This was definitely tampering with the machinery.
