Chapter Text
Everyone thought Lo'ak liked Tsireya and that they were destined to be mates. Lo'ak would have to admit, at first, he did find her to be the most beautiful Na'vi female he's ever seen. She had this luminous aura that caught the gaze of anyone... But, even after a rough patch with Aonung, her brother, he ended up being closer to him and they quickly became friends. As he got to know more about Aonung, he realized Tsireya wasn't the center of his attention anymore.
She had been a good friend and tutor. She was smart and graceful, and she was a good listener too when he needed it. She was most definitely attractive, but he didn't have the same connection he had with Aonung.
One day, the two young Na'vi stayed together, alone in their favorite place near the reef. They talked a lot, about anything, with their feet in the water, soft gazes, and content. Something he had never thought to feel again ever since Neteyam had passed away. He had felt so guilty and numb, but Aonung told him softly, "It's never until you lose someone you love, that you truly realize how important they are to you. So, you should always treat them like it's the last time you see them, like they're the center of your world."
It struck something inside of him. He cried and Aonung held him until he had no more tears left. He missed his brother, and he regretted not spending more time with him, but he wasn’t grieving alone. He had his family, Aonung and Tsireya by his sides. That was all he needed.
After a little while, Lo’ak felt better, and they started to talk again. They laughed and smiled and shared silly secrets. It was as if time had stopped and they were just in their own little world without expectations and responsibilities, grief, or fear about the future. It was just them trying to stay young and figure out what it meant to be who their parents wanted them to be, but more importantly what it meant to be themselves. They lay on the ground quietly after this, silence filling the atmosphere, only the crashing of the waves could be heard. Lo'ak turned his head towards Aonung and for the first time he started to see him, for real. He suddenly wanted to get close, so close so their bodies could touch.
Aonung was not looking at him. Their arms touched slightly and Lo'ak enjoyed the warmth and comfort. Turquoise skin against deep blue skin, and then cyan eyes met golden irises. They didn't say a word and they didn't need to.
The Metkayina moved first, slowly putting his hand on Lo'ak's cheek. He wasn't sure what to do next. On their first meeting, he had teased the Omatikayan because of his appearance that was unusual for a Na’vi and that made him feel even more like an outcast. It had been very immature of him and he felt ashamed of his behavior everytime he remembered it. Lo'ak was not who he thought he had been, and he had many times impressed him and gained his respect and trust over the months.
Perhaps it was a mistake, but it was too late to overthink it.
Lo'ak didn't flinch. He stayed still like he had waited for this. So Aonung stroked his face gently and tried to memorize all the details on his face as Lo'ak's breath hitched. Their bodies leaned closer and closer until their lips touched, just brushing delicately and then they pulled away from each other as if something had burned them. As if they had done something wrong...
Aonung got up quickly. "I'm sorry, I have to go back to my home. It's getting late, my father must be waiting for me."
Lo’ak shifted into a sitting position and crossed his legs. He was as scared as Aonung, so he let him go and watched alone the light disappear until everything was swallowed into darkness.

Chapter Text
The next day, they didn't dare talk about what had happened the day before and acted as usual. Soft teasing and banter as they would all the time. They swam with Payakan, hunted with other Metkayina, and trained for a possible upcoming battle against the sky people. But free diving was probably their favorite activity among anything else. They felt free and untouchable.
Aonung held Lo’ak’s hand to guide him under water and showed him parts of the ocean he hadn’t seen yet. He was still struggling to hold his breath for too long, but Aonung had always helped him get better. It was all so thrilling until the Metkayina had something planned with his father and left shortly after.
Lo'ak had this weird feeling, and he didn't know what to make of it. Whatever happened, he just wanted to stay friends with Aonung. He couldn’t understand why he had been so scared in the first place. It wasn't like they had done anything wrong...
Perhaps, he had misunderstood his feelings for Aonung. Perhaps, he just wanted a best friend and didn't want to be an outcast anymore. Or he wanted to fill the void Neteyam had left. Perhaps… he wanted someone as close as a brother? But one wouldn't feel that way about a brother. It was something else, something deeper that he couldn’t have predicted. He was drawn to that feeling like it was almost natural, vital even. He couldn't escape it and pretend it wasn't there. He had to talk to Aonung and tell him how much he meant to him.
Aonung was as confused. He was distracted and barely listened to his father who was explaining how he would secure their territory better.
"Son, are you listening?" the leader asked loud enough to get Aonung's attention again.
"Huh? Yea-Yes! Sorry, father!"
Tsireya looked at him curiously. Aonung gulped slightly and tried to act normal.
"Pay attention, my son. It's really important," his father scolded him.
His mother stared at him suspiciously as she held his baby brother in her arms. She turned her head towards her mate and they exchanged looks. He just shrugged and went on with his explanation.
Aonung made sure to focus this time.
Meanwhile, Lo'ak had a lot of questions. He knew many things about courtship and mating, but it was easier to have the knowledge rather than the experience. And he was still young, so he hadn't thought about love before, not really. Not like this.
As he ate with his family, Lo'ak couldn't stop himself from asking.
"If we stay here for a while, do you think it would be weird to mate with one of the Metkayina?" Everyone looked at him, surprised. "I mean, it's not like we would have a choice since we're not going back to our former home..." he quickly added when he saw their intrigued faces.
His father cleared his throat. "Well, I don’t see why it would be a problem and as I told you before, what matters is that you mate with someone important to you, someone you truly love."
"Yeah, sure. Anyway, I wasn't talking about me specifically," Lo'ak chuckled nervously. "Just a question."
"Does one of the young Metkayina interest you?" his mother asked with a soft smile.
"No, no! It-it's not about me!" Lo'ak stammered.
Kiri, Spider and Tuk started giggling. Lo'ak glared at them and shifted awkwardly in his seat.
"Sure," Spider said mockingly. He raised his eyebrows jokingly at Lo'ak who groaned in annoyance.
"Well, whoever it is, I just want the best for you," his mother assured him.
"Is it Tsireya?" his father asked thoughtfully. "That wouldn't be so bad to reinforce the bond between our two clans. But no mating before you're properly an adult, okay?"
"No rush," his mother added. "Just enjoy your youth and your first romances. It's normal to experience them before finding your mate when you're older."
Lo'ak was so embarrassed that he wanted to scream. "Okay, but as I said, it's not about me!"
He took a mouthful of the fish they had cooked for dinner and hoped someone would change the subject.
Kiri read it on his face and stopped her giggles.
"Can we help gathering fruits tomorrow?" She asked suddenly.
"Why not," their father replied. "But I want you all on your best behavior, you hear me?"
"Yes, sir!" Spider exclaimed, already excited to participate in a clan activity.
Lo'ak rolled his eyes. "Loud and clear."
The conversation had definitely been awkward, but what his parents had said really gave him even more confidence to face Aonung and tell him what he felt.
However, the day after, Aonung avoided Lo'ak. He hadn't decided what to do about all these feelings yet. He could see that the forest boy was disappointed, but he couldn't face him right away.
After a few days, Lo'ak had enough and didn't hesitate to confront Aonung.
"Why are you ignoring me?" he whispered, careful not to bring too much attention to them.
Aonung panicked. "I just need some time to think alone!"
He was ready to leave but Lo'ak grabbed his arm.
"Can we talk just for a minute, at least?"
The Metkayina sighed and then nodded, trying hard not to make any eye contact with Lo'ak.
They moved away from the rest of the clan to have some privacy. It was a little farther from their village, Awa'atlu. They sat on a rock, silent for a while, both waiting for the other to speak first.
"So... you wanted to talk," Aonung started to say nervously.
"Yeah, I- I don’t understand why you’re suddenly not speaking to me... At first, I believed what we did the other day was a mistake too, but I thought about what I feel for you and..." Lo'ak let out a frustrated sigh. "What I'm trying to say is... I see you, Aonung."
Aonung just looked down. He knew it. He felt the same way, but he didn't think his parents would approve. He was the son's chief after all. Maybe the Omaticaya family was part of their clan ever since the battle with the sky people. But they were still different, and his parents surely expected him one day to mate with one of their own.
Lo'ak was stubborn and always found ways to get himself into trouble. Not as much anymore after his brother had died, but he was still reckless. He was also compassionate and brave. Aonung loved that about him... But he couldn’t allow himself to be as reckless as Lo’ak. He needed to be more focused if he wanted to protect his clan like his father would expect of him.
"I like you as a friend," Aonung finally answered. "Nothing more."
Lo'ak frowned. "Why do you lie?"
"I don't."
"Do you think I'm stupid?"
"Sometimes."
"So now you're gonna be mean just to avoid the conversation..."
"Not everything is about you, Lo'ak! I'm the Olo'eyktan and Tsahìk's son, I can't fool around with a stranger!"
"I'm a stranger now?" Lo'ak was offended.
Aonung bit his lip and looked down to avoid meeting Lo'ak's burning eyes. "What I mean is that you're welcome here, but you’ll never truly be one of us. You're not even a real Na'vi!"
Lo'ak looked hurt. He glanced at his five fingers, a reminder of his difference.
The Omaticayan's anger was palpable. Aonung slightly flinched.
"You didn't change at all Aonung! It's like when you abandoned me outside the reef last time when I was only trying to make peace with you!" Lo'ak shouted heatedly. "Was it all a game to you? To get close to me so you can bully me even more? Do you hate me that much?"
"It-It's not what I meant, shit. I-I'm sorry I did that t-to you..." Aonung stuttered. "It's not a game, y-you know I don't hate you, I just can't..."
Aonung didn't know what else to say. He felt really guilty because he knew that he hurt Lo'ak.
Lo'ak stared at him with heavy breaths at first, but gradually calmed down. He closed his eyes briefly and then looked at Aonung with determination.
"Fine. I'll ask your parents if it's a problem then," he mumbled. "If their opinions matter to you this much..."
Aonung eyes widened. "Wh-what?"
"I'll tell your parents about us, and you'll see that it's okay."
"Don't you dare!" Aonung shouted. "There is no us!"
A playful smile appeared on Lo'ak's face. He suddenly called his ilu and jumped on its back to return to the village. Aonung followed him shortly and they arrived almost at the same time.
Lo'ak strode his way to the chief's home, but Aonung pushed him to the sand.
"I said don't do this!" he yelled at Lo'ak.
"You're a coward!" Lo'ak yelled back, pushing him too.
Aonung screamed, and they started to fight. Kiri and Tsireya who were helping gutting the fishes immediately ran to stop them.
"What's going on?" Kiri asked, confused about the sudden fight.
"Aonung..." Tsireya murmured. "This is not the right way to deal with this."
"Lo'ak, if you do this, I’ll never want to see your face again, you hear me?" Aonung exclaimed, ignoring his sister.
"You know what? What about starting now? Don't speak to me ever again! I'm a stranger anyway!" Lo'ak clapped back with tears forming in his eyes.
Aonung was panting as he watched Lo'ak jumped into the water and disappear with his ilu.
"Come with me," Tsireya insisted before taking his hand and dragging him on the side. "Can you tell me what's going on?"
"I ruined everything," Aonung just replied, his voice shaking.
Tsireya sighed and then smiled. "Do you like Lo'ak?"
"What, me? No! You can have him! I don't care! Everyone thinks you two will become mates, anyway."
"Trust me, we won’t and It's okay if you like him," Tsireya reassured him. "Male or female, you know it doesn't matter for Na'vi people."
"That's not the problem!"
"Ah, got you! So, you do like him!" his sister exclaimed triumphally.
Aonung let a frustrated cry escape. "Ok, fine!"
Tsireya stared at him, confused. She put a comforting hand on her brother's shoulder. "Why are you acting like it's a problem?"
"Look at him! He's not really part of our clan and father would want me to be with one of our own!"
She narrowed her eyes. "Did he actually say that?"
"Look, I’ll probably be the next in line to become chief and if I mated with a stranger, I would lose the trust of our clan," he affirmed.
Tsireya smacked his arm in frustration. "What is this nonsense?"
"Ow! What? It's the truth!"
"He's still Na'vi!" she retorted.
Aonung crossed his arms defensively. "He's only half!"
"So now you have prejudice," Tsireya replied with disgust.
"No, I- I'm just being realistic!" Aonung retorted but was rather embarrassed.
"Don't you think that's the least of our worries? We are at the edge of a war with sky people. No one cares about you being in love with a Na'vi boy who has five fingers, Aonung!"
She was right. He was just making excuses at this point. He was thinking about his duty to protect his people, but he did not prove himself to be an adult yet. And a war was coming.
"Whatever's happening between the two of you, just make up, okay?" Tsireya told him softly.
Aonung sighed, but he felt better about coming to terms with his feelings for Lo'ak.
He nodded and noticed Rotxo watching them from afar. He had been knitting fishing nets with two other Metkayina.
Tsireya patted her brother’s shoulder and left him alone to think. Rotxo took that as a cue to join Aonung.
"What was that all about?" He asked with his brows furrowed. "I saw you and Lo'ak fight. I wanted to help but Tsireya and the freak came first."
"Don't call her that... Her name is Kiri," Aonung snapped.
"Yeah, yeah. My bad," Rotxo said. "So, what happened?"
"I don't want to talk about it."
That response irritated Rotxo. "Are we even friends anymore? You don't tell me anything lately and you’re always with Lo'ak now!"
"Of course we're still friends! And Lo'ak and I are not on talking terms right now," Aonung answered with a tinge of sadness.
"Fine. Don't tell me, I don't care what you and your boyfriend do, anyway!" Rotxo muttered before leaving.
Aonung wanted to retort but he just remained silent. He felt incredibly stupid and sad because he couldn't accept that he loved Lo'ak. He would never have said that to Rotxo...
Soon, darkness covered the village, and everyone went back to their Marui pods. Aonung stayed to wait for Lo'ak's return. It wasn't the first time the forest boy had come back late after an excursion, as long as he wouldn’t go too far outside the reef. But it had never been that late...
"Aonung?" He heard Kiri called him. "Lo'ak hasn't come back yet?"
Aonung turned his head to look at her. He was starting to worry too.
"No, not yet. I don't know where he's gone," he told her.
Then he heard footsteps and saw Lo'ak's parents with their daughter, Tuk.
"Where is Lo'ak?" Jake asked in a serious tone, almost like a command.
"I don't know," Aonung admitted sheepishly.
Neytiri was looking around, desperately trying to spot her son nearby. Aonung could feel her mother instincts kicked in. She had already lost one and she wasn't going to lose another.
"Lo'ak!" She screamed, but only silence answered her.
Aonung's family joined them after a little while.
"Did you find him?" Tonowari asked.
"Not yet, but I'm sure he'll be back,” Jake assured. “It's not the first time he went free diving with his ilu and came back late."
"Not this late!" Neytiri hissed.
"We should go looking for him. Aonung, with me!" Tonowari declared.
His son nodded eagerly. It was his fault so he had to find Lo'ak and everything would go back to normal!
"We're going as well," Neytiri said with assurance.
"I'm coming too!" Tsireya added, raising her hand.
"Kiri," Jake called her. "Stay with Tuk, we'll be back soon."
Kiri nodded as Tuk held her arm with worry.
They took weapons with them in case they had to fight, and they all hopped on the back of their ilus, riding towards the Omaticayan.
Aonung's heart was beating fast in his chest as water splashed on his face. And then he dived, determined to go as fast as he could to find Lo'ak.

Chapter Text
A million thoughts ran into Aonung's mind as he dived. What if Lo'ak had been kidnapped by the sky people or worst killed? Maybe he was already dead because of him! That single idea just made him even more anxious. He couldn't lose him... They had still so much to do and experience together. He wanted to show him more of the oceans and the way of water, so much more... And he didn't tell him what he really had wanted to tell him from the beginning. He thought he had time!
He navigated smoothly and fast underwater, the time he had spent free diving with his sister had paid off. He was even one of the best out of his age group. Aonung signed his father that he knew where Lo'ak could be and quickly led everyone to their special spot, outside their village but close to the shore.
When they arrived, Lo'ak wasn't there. Aonung was trying very hard to concentrate through the fear. His heart thumped loudly against his ribcage and his breath became short as it was clear there was no sign of him nearby.
"Aonung, you have to tell me where Lo’ak is, right now!" Neytiri urged him, grabbing him by the shoulders.
"Calm down, Neytiri," Jake soothed her, putting a warm hand on her back. "I'm sure he's not far."
She let go of the young Metkayina and went back to her ilu, ready to go look somewhere else.
Aonung thought about the last place they went where they felt happy and at peace. The small isolated island where they liked to meet with Payakan. Especially Lo'ak since the tulkun was his soul brother. After Neteyam's death, Lo'ak would constantly go to him. He had told Aonung that it had helped him grieve. That meeting spot had become important for Lo'ak. He wouldn't have admitted it to Aonung, but he had gone there alone a lot when he wanted to cry. It was a place where he felt safe when he was upset or sad. They had to look there!
"I know where Lo'ak is this time!" he said, hopeful.
They followed him immediately. As they got closer to the shore of the isolated island, they began to see someone lying on the sand. Aonung even spotted Payakan not far from there. Neytiri and Tsireya gasped when they realized it was Lo'ak.
They were quick to reach him. Neytiri and Jake ran to their son who seemed to be unconscious. Neytiri let out a cry and shook Lo'ak to wake him up. Aonung noticed the blood on his forehead and started to panic.
He couldn't lose Lo'ak. He hadn't told him yet. Aonung's body started to shake and Tsireya took his hand, squeezing it lightly. She was scared too.
"Lo'ak! Open your eyes, please!" Neytiri begged, crying. Jake held his son's head to see how serious the wound was. He was clearly shocked but remained focused on the situation.
Payakan who stayed close by the shore clicked and whistled as to tell them something. But they didn't have time to comprehend, Lo'ak was already regaining consciousness. His eyes started to open, and his golden irises looked around with confusion.
"Thank you, Eywa!" Neytiri murmured as she hugged her son tightly.
Jake sighed in relief and lifted his head up. He mouthed something as if he was thanking someone in the sky.
Lo'ak winced when he tried to get up.
"Slow down, my son," Neytiri told him softly. "You're hurt."
"Let me see," Ronal said and approached them immediately.
She kneeled next to Lo'ak and checked his wound.
Aonung couldn't move. He had thought for a minute that Lo'ak was gone. But he was still here, breathing, talking... Alive!
Tonowari joined them after a few minutes. "Payakan told me he saved Lo'ak. Again."
"What happened?" Jake asked his son, still worried.
"I was swimming with Payakan, but I was distracted so I hit my head on something, can't remember what, and then, total black out," Lo'ak explained.
He grimaced with pain when Ronal put some type of seaweed paste on his forehead. "He should be fine," she reassured the parents.
Lo'ak could eventually get up with the help of Neytiri and Jake, and then, he saw Aonung.
The Metkayina couldn't speak. His mouth was dry. He was still processing everything. He had experienced every emotion possible in the last few minutes.
Aonung suddenly remembered telling Lo'ak that it was when you lost someone that you realize how much they meant to you. That was all he could see at that moment. The person who meant so much to him. Lo'ak. The forest boy with five fingers who had turned his world upside down.
His legs moved on their own and the next thing he knew, he was hugging Lo'ak. He was fighting back tears when he felt the other Na’vi boy wrap his arms around him gently.
"I see you too," he whispered into Lo'ak's ear. "I see you too. I'm sorry."
"Took you long enough," Lo'ak whispered back with chuckle of relief.
Knowing he almost had lost the first Na'vi he had ever loved, Aonung realized how much time he had wasted. He didn't want to hesitate or question his feelings anymore. He wanted to show Lo'ak how much he had changed his life and how happy he had felt because of him.
He imagined himself cupping Lo'ak's face and kissing him as their bioluminescent dots on their bodies sparkled in the darkness of the night. Not caring that everyone could see them.
But he refrained.
They let go of each other and smiled. It was enough because he had told Lo'ak how he really felt. And from the bottom of his heart.
"I'm glad you're safe, Lo'ak, but what were you thinking?" Jake suddenly exclaimed accusingly. "You can't do that to us! We lost too much already!"
"I'm sorry," Lo'ak replied, his eyes darting at Aonung and then he looked down, unable to face his father.
Jake was not really angry however, he had tears in his eyes, that he quickly wiped with the back of his hand.
Neytiri didn't hesitate and held Lo'ak in her arms tenderly. "Let's go home," she said with the softness of a mother.
When they got back to the village, Lo'ak was forbidden to go out for two weeks. He was annoyed about it, but he understood. He could have died, and they were still mourning his brother. Lo'ak hated that he made them worried sick, so he accepted his fate.
On the bright side, things were better with Aonung. Despite him being grounded, they could still spend time together.
One afternoon, they braided each other's hair, talking and laughing, just like they used to, but without all the drama. Lo'ak was sitting between Aonung's legs as the Metkayina finished the last braid on his head.
"It's the Metkayina style," he told Lo'ak before letting him have a look at his reflection in the water.
Lo'ak's ears moved back as he saw the cornrow braids mingled with the ones he had before. "I look awful!"
"What? I did a good job!" Aonung replied, confused.
The Omaticayan turned to look at him. "It just doesn't suit me at all, bro."
"So now we're brothers?" Aonung teased him.
"Tell me what we are, then." Lo'ak smirked.
Aonung shook his head with a chuckle. "I think you look great," he whispered like it was a secret. Words uttered just for Lo'ak to hear.
He wanted to stroke the forest boy’s face like last time, just to feel the softness of his skin. Aonung’s eyes fell on Lo’ak’s lips, and he gulped, lost in temptation.
The Omaticayan's face was flushed in a light shade of purple. Both of their tails started to move back and forth with excitement.
"What the hell are you guys doing?" Rotxo asked, breaking their moment.
"Nothing, I was just braiding Lo'ak's hair," Aonung mumbled.
"He looks ridiculous!" Rotxo snickered, examining Lo’ak. "You'll never be Metkayina, you know."
Aonung frowned. "Stop this, Rotxo!"
Lo'ak was too happy to bother arguing with Rotxo and he had to go back to his marui, anyway. So, he got up and winked at Aonung before walking away.
"See you later guys," he said nonchalantly, without looking back.
Aonung grinned and Rotxo rolled his eyes.
When Lo'ak joined his family for dinner that day, Spider burst out laughing.
"What the hell is that on your head?" he cackled.
"Braids." Lo'ak shrugged.
"It's uh… different," his father observed with a forced smile.
"You have the same braids as Aonung!" Tuk remarked, checking her brother's hair curiously.
"Oh yeah, that's exactly what I thought!" Kiri nodded.
His mother smiled. "Well, I'm happy you and Aonung are good friends now."
"Ye-yeah, we are." Lo'ak blushed slightly.
Kiri and Spider exchanged looks and knowing smiles.
"Yeah, it's good that you guys are friends," his father said while serving food for everyone. "You finally listened to me."
Lo'ak nodded and immediately shoved food into his mouth so he didn't have to say more.
Since everyone at the village kept giggling when they saw his new braids, Lo'ak decided to change it back as they were before, to Aonung's disappointment. But he didn't like being the center of attention too much. And he would have never told Aonung, but he actually hated the braids on him.
"I think it looked great on you," Aonung confessed, touching the thin braids tipped with beads that the Omaticayan always wore.
He also liked this look on Lo'ak, the cut at the sides and his braids cascading on his head. His hand slid behind and stroked the long braid at the back of his neck which covered his queue.
Lo'ak froze, his ears raised up and a million shivers ran through his body. No one had touched him there before, not like this.
He stared at Aonung with wide eyes.
"Oh, sorry. I just wanted to..." Aonung started to apologize but no more words followed.
They locked eyes, breathing heavily in anticipation and their skins tingling as they held hands. Lo'ak leaned in to close the distance and connect their lips when a voice snapped them out of this moment of intimacy.
They still hadn't told anyone about them, so they would hide behind a tree when they wanted to be alone.
It was Tonowari who had called his son. Aonung gave Lo’ak an apologetic smile and then left quickly to join his father.
As the days went by, Lo'ak and Aonung didn't have much time alone to explore their relationship. But they weren't in a rush. They had decided to tell their families in their own time.
Aonung had been preparing a feast for the Ta’unui village. He had organized everything with his father, Tsireya and other volunteers. It was in celebration of their alliance against sky people after Ta’unui’s homes had been burned down. They had slowly built everything back after this tragedy and Tonowari had made sure the relationship between the two tribes stayed strong.
He finally finished helping, so it was the occasion to enjoy a day with Lo'ak. He couldn't wait, and first in the morning, he ran to the Omaticayan family's marui.
"Good morning, Aonung," Neytiri said warmly when she saw him swimming by the entrance.
"Good morning!" Aonung greeted her with excitement.
She raised her eyebrows and soon Lo'ak appeared when he heard Aonung's voice.
"What are you doing here?" He asked, surprised to see him this early.
"I wanted to show you what we're wearing for the feast," Aonung replied, gesturing for him to come.
Lo'ak smiled, fondly. "I haven't eaten anything yet, wait."
"I knew you would say that, so I brought your favorite fruit!" The Metkayina revealed, throwing the food at him.
"Thanks!" Lo'ak said, impressed.
"You’re welcome. Let’s go!"
"I'll be back in an hour, mom!" Lo’ak informed his mother.
Neytiri had this knowing smile on her face that Aonung couldn't quite interpret as she nodded.
Kiri and Tuk who just woke up appeared as well. Their father was already gone, collecting some food for breakfast. As for Spider, he had to go back to Max and Norm’s lab now and then to change his mask, and because it was still a little tense for the Metkayina to see a human boy running around. But Jake assumed all responsibility and they trusted him.
"Where are you going?" Tuk asked. "Can I come too?"
Lo'ak looked at Aonung questioningly.
"I don't see why not," the Metkayina replied. "What about you, Kiri?"
Aonung had tried really hard to redeem himself towards her. He knew he had hurt her when he had made fun of her on their first encounter. She had seemed to tolerate him since then.
"I guess I could come with you." She shrugged. "It's not like I have better things to do today."
They went to look at the garments to wear for the feast, tried a few things, necklaces, headbands or bracelets. Aonung placed a huge necklace on Lo'ak.
"What do you think?"
Lo'ak checked it thoughtfully. It was a necklace made of vines, beads and seashells. "Not bad," he approved.
Rotxo and another young Metkayina named Samui came to get something too.
"Long time no see," Rotxo said nonchalantly. "You're spending a lot of time with the forest people now." He continued while taking a necklace.
"Rotxo please..." Aonung sighed loudly.
"It's fine, it's fine," Rotxo grumbled. "Me and Samui are pretty close too, you know." He added before leaving with the other Na’vi who looked confused.
"What's his problem?" Kiri groaned. "Is he jealous of you and Lo'ak or something?"
"Well, I would understand since I've spent much more time with Lo'ak lately. It's my fault. I abandoned my best friend."
"Tell him that you can have more than one best friend!" Tuk stated in obviousness.
Aonung chuckled. "Yeah, you're right."
Lo'ak, on the other hand, was in a bad mood after Rotxo's taunting. He took the necklace off. It was at times like those that made him want to go back to the forest.
It was awkward between the two Na’vi boys after that. When they finished, Lo'ak headed first to his marui.
Aonung sighed in disappointment. His date plan hadn’t gone as great as he had thought...
An idea emerged. They needed some time alone and Aonung had the perfect place to go. Lo'ak's punishment had been lifted so they could go swim to one of their favorite spots. It wasn't too far from the village, because Neytiri and Jake were still on their guard, but it was just enough to have some tranquility. Just the two of them.
There were some parts of the ocean that Aonung wanted to show Lo'ak, beautiful creatures swimming at the bottom, glowing jellyfishes, and colorful animals. He also showed off his hunting skills and helped Lo’ak improve in this domain.
They took deep breaths in before they plunged underwater. Aonung guided Lo'ak deeper until his lungs were almost empty. Lo'ak had taught his father how to breath to save him, just as Tsireya had showed him, but he was actually still struggling himself at times.
Aonung grabbed his shoulders and leaned forward to place his lips against Lo'ak's. He blew some air inside Lo'ak's mouth so he could stay a bit longer in the water. And then, they both had to reach the surface again to take a breath.
Lo'ak inhaled and coughed. He wished he had been a better swimmer like Aonung and that he could have stayed longer underwater. But the Metkayina, like his whole clan, had a good advantage with his larger thorax and longer tail. He had some kind of fins on his arms and a better vision. Lo'ak was jealous of it and at the same time, he loved it. He loved Aonung's turquoise skin and wanted to extend his fingers, touch his face, trace the lines... and kiss them.
The sun shone into Aonung's eyes. His mouth was slightly parted and inviting. Lo'ak wanted to get close.
Aonung smiled and then plunged again, leaving Lo'ak at the surface. The Omaticayan didn't hesitate to follow him, even if it was hard for him to hold his breath again.
Lo'ak kept his mouth close and followed the wise instructions of Tsireya. Holding his breath was much easier than before as he was used to it. He stayed still, floating, his eyes glued on Aonung who swam close to him until he was just inches away. Bubbles formed around them as the two Na'vi boys closed the distance. They breathed into each other's mouths and their lips moved slowly at first, and then firmly and intently.
Aonung cupped Lo'ak's face and deepened the kiss he had been dreaming to experience with him.
Soon, they needed air and went back to the surface with their cheeks in different shades of purple and their pupils blown wide.
They kissed again.

Chapter Text
When they went back to the village, they were both smiling and bumping their shoulders together as they walked up to the shore.
Spider was there and waved at Lo'ak energetically. Lo'ak waved back with as much excitement.
He felt like he was floating, butterflies in his belly and the ghosts of kisses on his lips.
"Hey, buddy!" Spider exclaimed before hugging Lo'ak. He looked so small next to his brother. "I always look like a baby holding his parent." He then remarked with a light chuckle.
Lo'ak snickered and then cooed, "Who's my baby boy?"
"Hey! Stop it!" Spider retorted with a giggle and Aonung laughed.
He greeted Aonung too when he saw him standing next to Lo'ak. His eyes went from one Na'vi to the other with interest.
"What?" Lo'ak narrowed his eyes.
"I don't know, you guys seem really happy today," Spider observed.
"What do you mean? We need a reason to be happy now?" Lo'ak urgently answered, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Okay..." Spider didn't say more but his mischievous grin spoke for itself.
"Don't you have things to do?" Lo'ak asked him, trying to hide his embarrassment.
He didn't want to tell Spider yet about him and Aonung. It was nice while they were still in their own little bubble of euphoria, without anyone getting involved.
"Yeah, anyway, I want to see Kiri! Later, losers!"
And Spider left quickly.
After their magical moment in the water, Lo'ak and Aonung felt connected like they had never been before. They kissed all the time, in different hidden places, without any doubt or hesitation. At first, it was chaste and after a little while, the kisses were more heated and urgent. Hands on their necks and in their hair, discovering newfound desires as teenagers would. Other times, it was sweet and gentle with their hands cupping their faces, lips on a forehead, on a nose, on a cheek...
They were in their own world, lost into each other, and their feelings. It was the happiest Lo'ak had felt since his brother's death. So, he wished the feelings to never go away.
It was finally the day for celebration. When the sunlight disappeared, the festivities could start. They welcomed people of the Ta'unui village, arriving with various offerings.
Aonung had his hair down for the night, and green paints on his face and on his torso. The paints followed the bioluminescent dots on his body. Lo'ak looked at him in awe, unable to contain himself.
The Metkayina was also speechless. The forest boy wore a seashell necklace that spread from his neck to his shoulders and a beautiful, beaded band around his slender waist. His hair was pulled up and tied, enhancing his features. Big golden eyes met ocean ones, contemplating one another.
"You look amazing," Aonung blurted out as if he had held his breath the whole time.
"You too," Lo'ak murmured, flustered. "Stunning."
Aonung felt the urge to kiss him, but they weren't exactly alone. He just smiled and patted the Omaticayan’s shoulder in a friendly way. But his eyes said everything that was running in his mind.
Everyone gathered in the communal area and started eating, telling tales, and singing. It was a moment of conviviality and amusement. Lo'ak started to dance with his sisters. Aonung joined them and they all moved in circle. At one point, Kiri pressured them into dancing with each other, but they were nervous at the idea of dancing in front of everyone. They ended up dancing on their own until Lo'ak was tired and sat on the sand, watching Aonung dance energetically with Tsireya. He couldn't stop looking at his hair flowing as he moved, his thin muscled arms raising up and down as he followed the music, or the stripes on his body oddly shimmering under the light of the bond fire.
Lo'ak felt like he was burning, he could feel his cheeks heating up and his palms sweating. He wanted to run to him, grab him by his waist and kiss him while everyone was watching. Who cared? But he stayed where he was, his body on fire and his mind muddled.
After some time, Aonung finally walked towards Lo'ak.
"Do you want to grab some food?"
Lo'ak shook his head vigorously. "No. Come with me."
Aonung raised his eyebrows questioningly but followed Lo'ak nonetheless.
He led him far from the crowd until they were alone.
"Are you okay?" Aonung asked seeing how Lo'ak was agitated. "You are suddenly really weir-"
The forest boy smashed their lips together, grabbing the Metkayina by his waist like he had imagined.
Aonung responded immediately. He used his height as an advantage to angle the kiss as he wished, cupping Lo'ak's face and pulling the Omaticayan to him.
Lo'ak wasn't at rest as he slid his hands into Aonung's loose hair and his tongue into his mouth on impulse. The Metkayina welcomed it without any resistance, and they both held onto each other, devouring their mouths like it was the best fruits they had ever had.
They just melted into the kiss, Aonung stroking Lo'ak's back and pulling him closer until they were chest to chest. They finally broke apart, panting and smiling.
"Wow..." Aonung murmured, stunned.
The two Na'vi went back to the festivities giggling. Aonung held Lo'ak's hand until they were close to the crowd again. They raced back to get food and ate quietly, looking at each other with soft eyes.
Suddenly, Tsireya asked Aonung to dance with her because she was avoiding a Metkayina who wanted her to dance with him.
Lo'ak wanted to dance with him too, but a Metkayina girl from the Ta'unui village approached him instead. She was as pretty as Tsireya with her long hair cascading on her shoulders. She seemed to ask Aonung to dance with her.
The Omaticayan thought it was fine. He would have danced with her too if she had asked him, and she danced really well, following the rhythm of the drums as she moved her feet really fast.
As everyone had fun, a wave of sadness washed over Lo'ak. He wished Neteyam was here with him. Teasing him, anything. He would do anything to have his brother back.
Lo'ak wondered if he would become an adult with the Metkayina or if one day, he would be back in the forest celebrating his first taste of adulthood. He wondered if he would choose Aonung as his mate.
Neteyam would have given him advice and eased his mind. He had always looked out for him, but he was gone. Lo'ak hated feeling like this, but sometimes his emotions came in waves and left him breathless.
After a few minutes, Aonung excused himself and joined Lo'ak.
"You don't want to dance anymore?" He asked, slightly panting.
"No, I'm good," Lo'ak replied. "I ate way too much."
He lied as he was not in the mood to dance in that moment.
Aonung laughed and gave a small slap on Lo'ak's back, not realizing that something was wrong with him.
Lo'ak noticed that the Metkayina girl was looking at Aonung intensely.
"Who is she?" Lo'ak pointed at her quickly.
"Oh, that's Mahina. We have known each other for years. Her father and mine are friends."
"Really? And wh-" Lo'ak began to say but was cut off by Tonowari coming their way with Ronal.
"My son, when are you going to make your move on Mahina?" Tonowari asked happily. "I saw you two dance."
Aonung gasped and his eyes glanced at Lo'ak as he said, "I-I don't know, we haven't really talked in a while..."
"She's perfect for you," Ronal chimed in. "In a couple of years, you would be able to choose her as your mate!"
Lo'ak who was playing with the seashells on his necklace, suddenly turned his face, shocked. The Metkayina wanted to hide. He bit his lip and then gave an apologetic look to the Omaticayan.
It wasn't what Lo'ak had expected. He wondered if Tonowari and Ronal would accept him like he had thought. What if Mahina or whatever her name was, would beat him to it and steal Aonung from him? This last thought started a fire inside him, clouding his mind with senseless jealousy.
He let Aonung with his parents and sat down far from the crowd to calm down. As usual, he didn't think! He acted reckless again with Aonung, wanting things to go exactly his way and not acknowledging the consequences. He felt stupid. Everything was his fault. Neteyam's death... and now he would probably lose someone he loved too. He was so angry at himself for everything.
Aonung approached him after a few minutes and saw the fire in Lo'ak's eyes. He could feel the heat of his anger and... his fear?
He sat next to him and placed a hand on Lo'ak's hand discreetly. The forest boy didn't react and turned his head to avoid his gaze.
"I'm sorry you had to learn about Mahina this way," he started. "I haven't seen her in a while and we're..."
"What?" Lo'ak snapped.
"We were promised to each other as part of the unification of our two tribes," Aonung explained. "I was supposed to become her mate after my iknimaya, but… I didn't expect to feel this way about you!"
Lo'ak felt betrayed. His tail swished left to right out of rage. He showed Aonung his fangs and hissed at him when the latter tried to take his hand.
"Don't touch me!"
And he left the party without looking back.
Lo'ak was in a forest. Back home, back to his people. He walked towards Hometree when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned around and faced his father. He was looking at something with tears in his eyes. He followed his gaze and saw Neteyam on the ground. Lifeless. He looked asleep, but Lo'ak knew he would never open his eyes again. He ran to him, but he seemed so far away. The more he ran and the less he could reach him. Neteyam was really gone. With Eywa and their ancestors. But not with him. With everyone who loved him.
Lo'ak woke up in tears, panting and screaming in fear. It was the first time he had a dream this vivid and gut-wrenching.
Spider who was lying next to him, got up abruptly.
"What? What's wrong?" He asked panicked.
Lo'ak looked around him and remembered that he had went to the lab last night and stayed with Spider.
"Lo'ak?" Spider placed his hand on his friend's bigger one.
"Sorry, I-I had a bad dream..." He finally replied to the human boy.
Spider sighed in relief. "It's okay, I'm here."
"I know," Lo'ak murmured. He put his hand onto his brother's. "Thank you for not insisting last night."
"Sure, but I'm worried about you. Are you ready to talk about it?"
"Yes," the Omaticayan said with teary eyes. "I miss Neteyam, so much. And I feel like all of this is my fault. I shouldn't have asked him to come rescue you. I should have gone alone, and he wouldn't have been shot!"
Spider nodded. "I understand. I miss him too, but you couldn't have predicted what would happen. It's not your fault!"
Lo'ak's shoulders were slacked, and he looked down, sniffing. "I want to go back in time and fix things!" He mumbled.
Spider bit his lip thoughtfully. "There's something I regret very much, and I want to go back in time too to fix it. Because it might hurt some people, but we're just kids, Lo'ak, and we make mistakes."
The Na'vi boy just started crying without saying anything else. Spider gave him a tissue, but it looked ridiculously small compared to him.
When Lo'ak calmed down, he turned his face towards his brother with nervosity.
"What?"
"I'm in love with Aonung..." Lo'ak blurted out.
Spider smiled. "I knew that."
Lo'ak's eyes went wide with surprise and embarrassment. "Really?"
"You were kinda obvious." Spider chuckled and then nudged his brother playfully.
"Wh-what? Does...uh... anyone else know about this?" The Na'vi boy stammered.
The human boy seemed to think about it and then counted on his fingers. "Your mum, dad, Kiri, Tuk, Tsireya..."
Lo'ak choked on his saliva. "What the hell? Even dad? What did he say about it?"
"He said that you weren't ready to talk about it so we should leave you alone." Spider shrugged.
Lo'ak just stared at Spider in shock, but he felt a wave of relief coursing through him. He gave his brother a giddy smile until he remembered why he had joined Spider in the first place. His lips reshaped into a pout and his eyes were glistening with sadness.
"Aonung and I had a fight," he finally shared. "Well, it's my fault, really. I got jealous."
"Oh?"
"He was promised to this Mahina girl, but even if they don't become mates, I'm still scared of the possibility that they would and that Aonung would leave me for a Metkayina, you know."
"Are you and Aonung a thing?" Spider grinned mischievously.
"Uh... yeah," Lo'ak replied uncertain. "Well, I guess?"
"Focus on the present! You guys have time before even thinking about mates and stuff! Just walk before you can run, okay?"
Lo'ak nodded. "Thank you, Spider."
"That's what best friends and brothers are for!" Spider answered proudly.
They hugged, Lo'ak's arms almost enveloping Spider completely.
"I love you," Lo'ak whispered, surprising himself by his openness. But he felt safe.
"I love you too, bro. Now, say exactly that to Aonung next time."
Lo'ak grinned and held him tighter. "I will."

Chapter Text
As he went back to his marui pod, his parents were waiting for him, eyes full of reproach.
"I'm sorry," Lo'ak said first in anticipation of what they were going to say.
"Spider informed us that you were with him through radio, but why don't you ever talk to us, Lo'ak? Before acting up like this?" his father scolded him, with a tone that Lo'ak knew all too well.
"You know you can tell us anything," his mother added.
"I know... Aonung and I, we love each other, I think? I mean I love him, but I don't know if he loves me too, at least like I love him, and I'm pretty sure he's gonna end up with a Metkayina anyway, so I don’t know, I got jealous last night and it’s the first time I’m feeling this way for someone, I don’t know what to do..." Lo'ak babbled.
Jake and Neytiri shared a look and then laughed.
"Finally. You're opening to us." His father walked up to him and place his hand on his shoulder.
"Sometimes, I can't because I always feel like I'll disappoint you," Lo'ak confessed.
"I'm sorry I made you feel that way, Lo'ak. I was hard on you because I wanted to protect you, but I was wrong and you're growing up. I'm proud of you, okay?" Jake revealed, his tone softer than before.
Neytiri put her arms around Lo'ak and his father and then smiled. "You know, I never believed I would have a family with a human who turned into a Na'vi, and here I am. It's always complicated at the beginning, but you and Aonung we'll be fine, you’re not that different."
She kissed Lo'ak's forehead gently. He wrapped his arms around her. "Thank you, mom."
And then, he felt his father's arms enveloping him too. It surprised him at first, but he welcomed it happily.
"Do you think Tonowari and Ronal would accept me?" Lo'ak asked, his stomach twisting with worry.
Aonung was pacing around in the communal area, waiting for Lo'ak's return. Tsireya rolled her eyes at him.
"Aonung, he's fine! Jake and Neytiri know where he is!"
"It's not that, I'm just scared that he's going to end things with me because of Mahina!"
"You know how he is, he's always a little impulsive," Tsireya reassured him. "And he was clearly jealous so it's a win for you."
Aonung sighed loudly. "I can't believe all of this started when he backed me up against father. I was such a douchebag back then. But he still helped me! And he has become so much more to me now. He's... he's everything."
Tsireya looked at him, surprised and then she grinned.
"Oh, you got it bad," she tells him teasingly.
Aonung blushed, realizing what he had confessed to his sister. But it felt good to have actually said it. Relief washed over him, and he finally decided to tell his parents. Even if, he was scared of their reactions, or breaking their expectations.
He loved another Na'vi. It was a Na'vi from the forest, with five fingers and small bushes for eyebrows that Aonung got used to watch frowned more than once. He was impetuous, reckless, stubborn, and he was passionate, driven, and beautiful. So beautiful... But most importantly, he was Na'vi. So, there was nothing wrong.
"You’re waiting for Lo’ak, right?" He heard a voice say. He turned around and saw Rotxo staring at him with a playful smile.
"I don’t have time for this, Rotxo. What do you want?" Aonung asked, a little irritated. Rotxo’s behavior had not been the best lately.
"We’re supposed to be best friends, but you don’t tell me anything!"
Tsireya decided to leave them speak alone. She hugged her brother briefly. "You got this," she whispered to him and walked away.
Aonung watched her go and then fixed his eyes on Rotxo. "Look, I know. I’m sorry, I haven’t been the best of friends, but I was dealing with some stuff…"
"You mean your big crush on Lo’ak? "
His eyes widened. "You know?"
"You skxawng! You were too obvious, and I know you!" Rotxo replied frustrated. "I was waiting for you to tell me."
The chief’s son rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment. "I thought you would make fun of me if I told you."
"Ok, maybe I would have," Rotxo chuckled. "But I was just angry to be excluded, that’s all." He added more seriously.
There was a pause until Aonung sighed. "I’m sorry, I should have told you."
"I’m sorry too. I was a dick…"
They both laughed awkwardly. Aonung came closer to his friend and ruffled his hair roughly.
"Stop! It took me a lot of time to make my hair look this good!" Rotxo complained, swatting his hand away. Aonung laughed until he was serious again, remembering what he had to do.
"I need to talk to my parents now," Aonung told him, a little nervous.
"Just go, you moron! You need my permission or what?"
Aonung chuckled. "No, no! I’m going, stop pushing me!"
Then, he took a deep breath and ran to find his parents. He entered his marui and saw his mother singing a lullaby to his baby brother. Oleyan. He approached them slowly and his mother smiled at him.
"Has Lo'ak come back?" she asked.
"I don't know," Aonung replied while stroking his brother's cheek with his thumb.
"That boy is trouble." She shook her head. Aonung immediately lost his confidence.
Tonowari soon joined his family, after returning from hunting. He put down his spear and cape on the side.
"How's my boy?" He asked coming towards them, and then placed a kiss on his mate's cheek and his baby's forehead.
Aonung suddenly couldn't breathe. He wanted to tell them so badly. It wasn't even a big of a deal, but he felt like he was going to disappoint them in some ways. That they wanted him with someone like Mahina. Not a troublemaker like his mother spoke of Lo'ak.
"You wanted to tell me something, my son?" Ronal seemed intrigued to see him this quiet all of a sudden.
"There are so many things I want to tell you both," he started to say and then gulped slightly. "And I don't know how you would react."
His parents looked at him questioningly while Oleyan let out a small burp. Aonung was panicking, but he needed to do this. Lo'ak crossed his mind, his face soft and reassuring. It was enough to give him courage.
He took a deep breath. "I don't want to be with Mahina. I don't want to become her mate."
"Well, that's fine," his mother answered. "You don't have to."
"Really?"
"There's no need for a future mating with the two of you to maintain our relationship with the Ta'unui," Tonowari confirmed. "You may choose whoever."
Aonung exhaled, relieved. "I didn't want to disappoint you."
"Son, whoever you choose in the future is completely up to you and we will accept them," Tonowari assured him.
"Well, I don't really know yet who my mate is going to be, but there's someone I really like," Aonung finally told them.
Ronal nodded, encouraging him to continue. "Do tell us."
"Lo'ak."
His parents didn't reply at first, not sure if they had heard right.
"So Lo'ak is the one who has made you all strange these past few weeks?" Tonowari barked out a laugh. "That's unexpected!"
"I don't think Lo'ak is the best influence, that boy is all over the place," Ronal began speaking. "But he's grieving, and your friendship seemed to have given him some kind of peace. You’ve changed too, my son. You're happier."
Aonung didn't know what to say. He was lost for words and his brain couldn't function properly. "Wh-what? Does that mean you're okay with it?"
"Of course," Tonowari replied calmly.
The Metkayina boy chuckled nervously. He couldn't believe it. He regretted not having told them sooner. When Lo'ak had wanted to tell his parents about them, last time, he should have let him!
"I need to..." They nodded without waiting for Aonung to finish.
And he was gone again, running to find Lo'ak this time. He wanted to tell him that it was okay, that they were okay. He wanted to tell him that he couldn't stop thinking of him, of their first kiss, and their fight... He couldn't wait to tell him that he wanted him and there was no one else on his mind. He needed to tell him that he was the center of his word and nothing else mattered.
Lost in his thoughts, he suddenly bumped into the subject of all his worries. They both fell backwards.
They stayed silent. The waves crashed onto the shore, and they could hear the faint laughs of children playing.
Aonung was bewildered. "Lo'ak, I-"
"I know, I'm sorry."
"I told my parents."
"Me too."
"What did they say?" They asked at the same time and then chuckled lightly.
"It's okay," Aonung replied. "Everything is going to be okay."
Lo'ak was relieved, but something seemed to be bothering him.
"Sometimes I don't know if I will be okay, I can't stop thinking about Neteyam," he shared with sorrow.
Aonung got up and then held out his hand to him. Lo'ak took it gladly and was quickly back on his feet. "I know it hurts you and I never knew how to make you feel better, but I know what to do now."
Lo'ak raised one eyebrow. "What?"
"Just come with me."
"Making out is not going to solve any problem," Lo'ak said skeptically.
Aonung laughed. "No, it's not that. Come."
And he started to go to the water, already calling for his ilu. Lo'ak followed him, wondering what the other boy had in mind. As he sat on the back of his own ilu, Aonung held his hand firmly. "Do you trust me?"
"Yes," Lo'ak whispered.
Lo'ak soon found out where Aonung was taking him. The Cove of the Ancestors. He understood immediately what the Metkayina was thinking.
"No, I'm not ready!" Lo'ak panicked.
"It's okay, I'm here for you."
"My parents couldn't make me do it and you think you can?" Lo'ak was ready to go back. He knew Aonung wanted to help, but since Neteyam's death, he couldn't bear to go visit him in the spirit world. He was too scared to reopen a barely closed wound.
"You can do it, you're the bravest person I've ever known."
"There's literally anyone braver than me," Lo'ak answered stubbornly. "Compliments won't do anything, I said no!"
Aonung took his hand again and stroked it with his thumb. "You can do it," he affirmed. "I'll go with you."
Lo'ak let out a shaky breath. He had wanted to see his brother again, but he had been scared he wouldn't be able to let go if he did. He wasn't feeling ready, but when would he ever be? Nothing would change the fact that Neteyam was gone, and this was the only way to see him again, even just briefly. He could feel warmth coming from Aonung's hand and it helped calm his mind somehow. Just enough to hesitate.
"I don't know..." Lo'ak breathed out.
"I'll be by your side the whole time," the Metkayina assured him.
Lo'ak interlaced their fingers together. "Okay, but don't let go."
Aonung smiled. He kissed Lo’ak’s hand tenderly. "Never."
They went underwater and swam to the Spirit tree. It was glowing, attracting the two Na'vi boys to it. It was the first time Lo’ak saw it, he thought it was beautiful.
Lo'ak felt his legs tremble. He took his long braid enveloping his queue and slowly attached it to a part of the tree.
He immediately saw white and soon he was back into the forest. Neteyam was looking at him. Lo'ak ran to him and jumped into his arms without any hesitation.
"Careful, little brother, you almost knocked me out!" Neteyam chuckled.
Lo'ak was stunned. He couldn't believe that he was actually seeing Neteyam.
"Why are you making this face like you've seen a spirit or something?" His brother teased him.
Lo'ak laughed, fighting back tears. "I missed you."
"What do you mean? Why are you crying? Did you hurt yourself?"
"No, I'm okay."
"Are you sure?"
"I will be."
Neteyam looked at him, confused and then gave a small pat on his shoulder. "I know what can make you feel better, your favorite fruit!"
Lo'ak laughed again, overjoyed. "I love you," he breathed out. Neteyam raised an eyebrow, surprised.
Lo'ak didn't want to go. But Neteyam was safe, at peace. He didn't think it was Lo'ak's fault. He just acted like a big brother, the best brother, like he had always been. So, he had to let go, because he wanted this to be the last moment he remembered.
And he let go, not of his brother, but of his guilt and came back with the memory of a smiling Neteyam, always looking out for him. His tears mingled with the water so he didn't notice he was crying. He saw Aonung by his side, who kept his promise by holding his hand tightly. Lo’ak felt free, with a much lighter heart.
"Let's go back," Aonung signed him.
They reached the surface. Aonung took Lo'ak's face into his hands gently and then kissed his forehead. "I told you you could do it."
Lo'ak placed his hand on Aonung's and leaned into the touch.
"I love you, Lo'ak. I'm sorry if I made you doubt," Aonung told him softly.
"Nga yawne lu oer," Lo'ak answered, with all the meaning it had for a person to cherish, and Aonung kissed him passionately.
Lo’ak wanted to stay like this forever, but they had to go back to the village. Leaving behind them all the doubts, the guilt, and the fear. Moving forward for a brighter future...
When they arrived, they held hands again and didn't let go. Everyone could see it and they didn't mind. It was fine.
They were okay.
Notes:
I was so emotional writing the end... But i think it's a good ending, right? what did you think?
Thank you for the continuous support for this fic, it gave me a lot of motivation to finish it and I hope it was overall enjoyable.I'm planning on writing more Aonung/Lo'ak in the future so stay tuned for that. In the Meantime, I will upload a Aonung/Neteyam oneshot soon! Just a little thing that I wrote for fun :)
Til next time ;)
