Chapter Text
Hermie could tell that Normal was anxious about his role in Gay High School Musical (you know, the 2039 remake of High School Musical that’s just a Little Bit gayer).
The cast list had been posted yesterday. Hermie knew Normal would get in, of course; Normal was a decent actor, especially so for having never been onstage before. Although he figured his time as Teeny counted for something.
Still, when Normal got cast as the lead, Troy, and Hermie as his love interest, Gabe, it felt almost too good to be true. Hermie, of course, didn’t understand the cause behind the wave of excitement that passed over him upon seeing the cast list. He chalked it up to the fact that he and Normal already had a good rapport- they were friends, they went to the dance together, so they’d undoubtedly have great chemistry. It would make for a show stopping performance.
He was sitting on his bed with the script, getting a head-start on memorizing his lines, when his phone buzzed. A message from Normal.
NORMAL: hey hermie !! how are you feeling about the show? I still can’t believe the cast list haha
Hermie could feel almost palpable anxiety coming off of that text message.
HERMIE: Doing well. Just starting to memorize my lines. Excited to work with you Wildcat ;-)
NORMAL: wwwwait how are u memorizing lines already?? don’t we get our scripts Wednesday at rehearsal ??
HERMIE: Normal, Normal, Normal
A good actor is always 2 steps ahead. I printed a copy out in the library yesterday.
NORMAL: oh jeez, ur so prepared!
HERMIE: If you would like to get a head start
Your “head in the game” if you will,
You’re welcome to come by my place and do a readthrough with me.
NORMAL: really ?? that sounds great, hermie!! I’ll be over in 20 :))
HERMIE: Fabulous.
Hermie closed his script and hopped out of bed. He had to look somewhat presentable.
Normal paced around his room. Being in a play was going to be fun! He just wanted to get to know Hermie a little bit better and be in, like, a few scenes! Now he was the lead, and had to act a whole romance with Hermie, and sing in front of everyone, and-
He stopped and took a breath. One step at a time, Normal.
What would Hermie do?
Normal thought for a moment. Method acting. Right!
He was Troy- he should look the part when he goes over to Hermie’s. He managed to dig out a basketball tank-top from deep in his closet and threw it on.
After a long-winded (and pointless) internal debate on whether Normal should bring a physical basketball with him too (decided against it), Normal’s uncle pulled the car up in front of Hermie’s house. AKA the member of his family Normal thought would take the least psychic damage if they happened to see Hermie the Unworthy.
“This the boy you went to the dance with?” Lark asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Uhhh! Yeah! But we’re not like, um..” Normal struggled to explain. “We’re just friends, really.”
“And he’s the one playing your love interest in the musical.”
“Yea? I told you, we’re running lines.”
“Uh huh. Ok. Be good, kid.”
Normal sputtered out various protests before giving up and getting out of the car.
His heart rate picked up as he scaled the steps to the door- should he have even agreed to this? He hadn’t even thought about the kind of lovey-dovey shit he would have to say to Hermie in the read-through, and he was already so anxious about all this. But it was too late to turn back. His uncle's car was already down the street.
On the plus side, there wasn’t a kiss scene in the movie- he’d be safe from that, at least.
The thought of kissing Hermie had Normals face red before Hermie even answered the door.
“Well, hello, Normal.” Hermie looked him up and down. “Appears someone is already in character.”
“Well, you told me to be 2 steps ahead, right?”
Hermie smirked approvingly and led him into the house. Normal exhaled.
To Normal’s surprise, Hermie The Unworthy’s house was a stark contrast to his personality. Minimalist, cleanly, and almost lacking any sort of flair or color. When Hermie opened the door to his bedroom, however, Normal was relieved to find something more akin to what he expected.
The walls of Hermie’s room were covered in playbills, posters, different notes and quotes of all kinds filling up almost every inch. It felt so incredibly full and indicative of memories, personality- the real Hermie, not a role. Normal stood in awe.
It was always so hard to tell the difference between the genuine facets of Hermie and his acting, and Normal's confidence in what he thought was Hermie's true character often wavered. But seeing this room gave Normal the sense that maybe Hermie wasn’t such a mystery.
Hermie sat on the bed and motioned for Normal to join him.
“I only have one script, so we’ll have to share.” He flipped to the beginning. Normal gulped.
The read-through was mostly uneventful. Normal’s anxiety about 1) the show and 2) being so close to Hermie compounded on top of each other, but after they got into the rhythm of it and began to add in funny voices for all the extra characters, he got comfortable fast.
By the time they reached "Breaking Free" near the end of the script, Normal were having a good time.
“Now,” Hermie said, flipping over the last page of the song, “We absolutely kill this song, the crowd cheers, etc… And then of course the kiss.”
Normal's heart immediately leapt to his throat. “Sorry?”
“Troy and Gabe kiss onstage, and the crowd cheers, and then the scene goes to the basketball game,” he explained nonchalantly.
“Whaa. Um. I thought they didn’t kiss in the movie?” He asked, voice unusually high-pitched.
“Well, no, not in the movie. However, the play adaptation seems to have added a kiss on the lips rather than the cheek in this particular scene,” Hermie said, pointing to the exact stage direction on the page.
Normal swallowed. “...Okay.”
A beat.
“Have you like… had to kiss people in plays before? That seems, um, difficult.”
“Oh, of course,” Hermie explained, laying the script down on the bed. “But I’ve only ever done them as stage kisses.”
“...What’s that?”
“Here, look,” Hermie started, shifting his spot to be closer to Normal. “You just put your hand out as if to cup another person’s face, and put your thumb out in front of your lips.”
He put his hand as if to hold Normal’s face, but kept it a few inches away from actually touching in order to mimic the movement.
“That way, you simply kiss your thumb as it’s against the other person's mouth, so your lips never need to actually connect.”
Hermie leaned in and raised his eyebrows, a silent question to Normal to ask if this was okay.
Normal nodded, heart racing as Hermie's hand cupped his face- a little too aware of how warm his cheeks already must be. Hermie pressed a thumb to Normal’s lips and leaned in to briefly kiss it before quickly pulling away.
It felt like all the blood had rushed to Normal’s head.
“If we pull it off right, the audience will have no idea it's not real,” Hermie smirked. Normal might have been reading into it, but he thought he saw a little more red than usual in Hermie’s face too.
Normal could only manage a: "Cool."
“Well. Let's finish this, then.” Hermie re-opened the script to it’s final pages.
As soon as Normal got home, he went to his room and pulled out his phone, immediately opening the FELLOW TEENS group chat.
NORMAL: guyssssssssssss

Normal threw his phone onto his bed and plopped down face first. He lay there for a minute, and then rolled his eyes before picking up his phone again and reluctantly searching up “Wikihow to stage kiss.” It couldn’t hurt.

Chapter Text
When Normal left his place , Hermie went on with his day as per usual. Memorizing lines, chores, homework.
He couldn’t stop thinking about the stage kiss. He was impressed! He must have been SO in character. But to this extent? It was starting to get annoying- he paced his room, the image of one mixed-up mascot kid stuck in his brain.
However, Hermie didn’t have a basketball team or academic decathlon group to gush to, so he just went to sleep.
In his dreams, he was standing on Gabe’s balcony at night, looking down at a Troy wearing an oversized basketball tank top who looked a lot like Normal Oak.
“-Maybe that’s because I don’t only want to be the basketball guy,” Troy called out. “So I’m gonna sing. What about you?”
Hermie held back a smirk. He knew what scene this was.
“I don’t know, Troy,” he sighed, walking back into his room and leaning against the wall dramatically.
“Well, you have to say yes, because I brought you something.”
Hermie opened one eye. “What do you mean?” He asked, feigning innocence.
“Turn around.”
Hermie did. Troy now stood on the balcony holding sheet music- just like in the movie.
Hermie walked over to join him, and Troy put down the sheet music on a small table.
Now was the part where Troy would start singing to him. But he didn’t.
Troy walked towards Gabe, cracking a smile.
This… wasn’t in the script. But like any good actor, Hermie appreciated some improv. He’d play along.
Troy put a hand to Gabe’s cheek. They were close now. Hermie always kept his cool in these situations onstage, but for some reason, even knowing this was a dream, he was struggling.
Maybe it was because the Troy in front of him had the face of Normal smiling back at him, just inches away.
“It’s a pairs audition,” he said, leaning in further, “ Hermie .”
Hermie’s eyes shot open at the sound of his own name, and he was left lying alone in his bed, chest heaving as if he had just awoken from a nightmare.
The morning sun peeked through the curtains.
Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.
Normal paced around his room. Wikihow article How To Stage Kiss: “Step One: Get to know your co-star.” Easy! Normal could do that. He loved to spend time with Hermie anyway, this just gave him an excuse.
“ Maybe I'll ask Hermie out to eat at that pizza place after the read-through today,” Normal thought. “Or. Not ‘ask him out,’ more like ‘ask him to HANG out.’” Jeez, he needed to get a grip. “Gahh.”
When Normal arrived at the auditorium for the cast meetup, Hermie was already there, and Normal slipped in the seat next to him, whispering.
“Hey, Hermie!” He nudged him. “Excited for the real read-through?”
“How could I not be?” Hermie raised his eyebrows, but looked away from Normal a little quicker than usual.
The read-through came and went, just as expected. It wasn’t as intimidating as Normal had expected, especially after already having done it once with Hermie. He did have a deep dread that everyone could see how red his face felt when they got to Breaking Free, but it was over now.
Hermie was placing his brand-new non-library-printed script into his bag when Normal walked up to him.
“Hey! I was wondering if you wanted to go grab some pizza with me before heading home?”
“I would love to. However, I have far too much math homework to accompany you. Eat a slice for me, though.”
“Oh, no, I wasn’t- I mean, I’m not going on my own.”
“Oh. Well in that case,” He zipped up his bag. “I will see you tomorrow, Wildcat.” Hermie winked.
The butterflies in Normal’s stomach loved that.
“Gabriel’s gotta keep his grades up if he wants to join the aca-dec team, you know,” he added, tapping a finger to his forehead and briskly walking out of the auditorium.
Normal frowned and looked down at his phone.
“Step Two: Discuss the character motivation.” Oh, skip. Hermie basically did that any second he got the chance to. That wouldn’t be an issue.
“Step Three: Talk to the director. Because your director has probably overseen kissing scenes before, they probably have some good advice about how to make the experience less awkward.”
Normal looked up. All the other actors had filtered out, and Terry Jr was standing right in front of the stage, looking at his computer. Normal took a deep breath and walked over to him.
“Oh! Normal, hello. How are you feeling about the show so far?”
“Great! I’m really excited about it, Mr. Stampler.”
“I'm glad to hear that.” He gave a kind smile to Normal. “Did you have something to ask me about?”
“Yes! Um, I was just, reading this, uh, article, and… Basically I was wondering about the kiss scene,” He blurted out.
“Oh! Are you uncomfortable with it? It’ll 100% be a stage kiss, but if you aren’t c-”
‘No! No, I’m fine with it, I was just… looking to see if you had any… advice, I guess??”
“Hm. Well, I wouldn’t worry about it too much, if I were you. You’re doing it with Hermie.”
“Yeah.”
“He’s done this before. He certainly won’t be weird about it.”
“No, I know that, I just…” Normal sighed. “I don’t want to make it weird, you know? Like what if I do it wrong and mess it up?”
Terry Jr. squinted at Normal for a second, considering, before recognition flashed across his face and he smiled softly.
“Oh, kid. Don’t worry about it. Hermie knows what he’s doing up there, and he’s gonna help you. Just talk to him, okay?”
Normal nodded. “Thanks, Mr. Stampler.”
Step five was rehearsing the kiss. “To alleviate some of the nerves, make sure to rehearse the kiss with your co-star before rehearsing it onstage as many times as needed to get comfortable.” Normal blushed at the image of the two stiffly drawn Wikihow characters kissing. He supposed he should text Hermie.
He sat on the edge of his bed, deleting and retyping the same smiley face emoticon for 5 whole minutes.
Hermie’s phone buzzed, and he picked up the remote to pause High School Musical 2. (An important part of finding his character was consuming all the official media he could, and that included this- even if the best part was undoubtedly Sharpay singing Fabulous.)
A message from Normal. Hermie instinctively grinned.
NORMAL: hey ! hermie! we should meet up one day after school (when you don’t have homework) to practice our stage kiss so we have it down before we have to do it in rehearsal :)
HERMIE: My, My. Bopping to the Top, aren’t we, Normal?
NORMAL: ... what ?
HERMIE: “Wipe away your inhibitions”
HERMIE: It’s a part of the lyrics
HERMIE: to Bop To The Top
Fuck.
HERMIE: Nevermind
NORMAL: … no i get it !!
HERMIE: To answer your question,
HERMIE: I’m free Friday afternoon if you are?
NORMAL: works for me!! see you then
Hermie watched the typing icon appear again and cocked his head. It disappeared, then reappeared a few more times.
NORMAL: wildcat ;)
“Oh. Oh. That was… unexpected ,” Hermie thought to himself, feeling the red creep into his cheeks. It took a lot to get Hermie flustered, but somehow, that of all things worked. What was wrong with him?
“Two can play at that game, Normal,” he thought, and immediately began concocting a list of overly flirty phrases to say to Normal and overcompensate for the real actual crush he was being forced to face. The paused "High School Musical: 2" was completely forgotten.
Notes:
1) yes i looked up the real hsm script for that dream sequence
2) theres gonna be. one more chapter i think sorry

Chapter Text
Normal’s friends had been teasing him about the kiss rehearsal the rest of the week, and he was really starting to get in his head about it. Correction: Taylor and Scary had been teasing him about it. Lincoln was mostly trying to convince Normal he was actually crushing on anyone other than Hermie.
He fiddled with his shirt as he watched out the rainy kitchen window, waiting for a car to pull up. He had decided to throw on the basketball tank top again, as sort of a good luck charm. It worked well enough last time.
Hermie had asked to rehearse at Normal’s house rather than his own and was supposed to arrive any minute.
Step six of the article was to take care of hygiene, something Normal Oak was famously bad at. It meant something substantial that he had both showered and put deodorant on, and even his mother could notice him brushing his teeth in the bathroom in the middle of the day to make sure his breath was fresh when Hermie arrived.
Rebecca Oak-Swallows-Garcia poked her head into the kitchen.
“Is your friend going to be staying for dinner?”
Normal spun around, his nervous pacing stopped for just a second.
“Maybe? I’m not really sure.”
“Okay, just ask once he gets here so I know whether I should cook an extra serving. And… stop pacing already.”
Normal nodded.
The doorbell rang.
Here we go. Normal did a little shake to get the nerves out and exhaled before hopping over to the door.
The door swung open to reveal Hermie already leaning on the doorframe.
“Hello, Normal.”
“Oh! Hi, Hermie! Here, come inside, you’re gonna get wet.”
Hermie followed him into the house, and took off his shoes and jacket.
“Wearing your signature Troy outfit, I see. I’m a fan.”
Normal grinned and scratched the back of his neck.
“Haha, yeah! I figure it helps me get into character, right?”
“Oh, absolutely.” Hermie patted him on the shoulder, and Normal showed him the way up to his room.
Hermie peered at a shelf over a little nook in Normal’s bedroom as Normal wrestled to get his copy of the script out of his backpack.
The shelf featured what appeared to be a Teeny the Teen hand puppet (Tiny) and a singular trophy. Otherwise, it was covered with a bunch of framed photos of different school events- soccer games, school dances, even a drama show or two, all with Teeny the Teen’s face smiling horrifically at the camera.
Normal came up behind Hermie and pointed at the trophy.
“That’s from the year our basketball team won the championship, remember?” Normal beamed. “But it was right after we had decided Teeny was going to be the mascot, and everyone on the team didn’t want the trophy with him on it, for some reason? So they let me take it!”
The two of them took a seat on the blanketed floor underneath the shelf, Normal reaching over to an outlet to plug in a string of lights that hung over it.
“This here is my nook! I only really use it if I have a book to read in English, or if I’m watching a movie on my phone or something. Pretty comfy though, right?”
Hermie nodded. “Quite… romantic, don’t you think?”
“Wh- uhhhh. I mean, I guess it’s fitting, since we’re gonna practice kissing, right?”
Hermie raised an eyebrow. It took Normal a second.
“LIKE STAGE KISSING- You know what I mean, come on!!”
“Indeed I do. Should we get straight to it, then?”
Normal shifted on the blanket, face already heating up. Maybe he should have thought it through before inviting Hermie over literally JUST to stage kiss. Maybe he should have planned additional activities.
“Sure!” He responded.
“Then show me what you got,” Hermie instructed. “Wildcat.”
Grr. Hermie was too good at this- Normal felt like it was almost as if he had scripted his flirty lines ahead of time (He had).
The final step of the Wikihow article Normal had read was “Step Seven: Remind yourself that you’re acting. Even though you yourself aren’t attracted to your co-star, you have to make sure the audience believes that you are.”
First of all, bold of the article to assume Normal wasn’t living out a fanfiction trope in real life.
Plus, the real acting challenge was acting like he DIDN’T want to kiss his co-star on the lips. Like, so bad.
Normal tried to push all this aside and took a deep breath to steel himself, looking Hermie in the eyes. There was a certain mischievous glint in them that was far too common.
He raised a hand to Hermie’s cheek, thumb over his mouth, far too aware of how badly his hand was shaking, and leaned in to kiss his own thumb.
Normal felt Hermie place his hand on top of his, and Normal’s whole body flinched instinctively, pulling away entirely.
“Sorry,” he said, not really sure what he was apologizing for. He looked around. “Was that… good? Listen, man, I don’t really know what I’m doing here, and I’m really nervous-”
Hermie put a finger to his lips, and Normal shut up immediately.
“ Come on , Normal. You’ve got to sell it to the audience. Show me passion .” He made unwavering eye contact. “Like your character really is in love with me.”
Normal huffed. He was smart enough to recognize Hermie was messing with him now, for being so nervous, but he was also stubborn enough to go along with it anyway.
Normal reached out his hand to grab onto Hermie’s face again, placing the thumb over his lips.
With a deep inhale, he squeezed his eyes shut and leaned in for Hermie’s face just a little too fast.
He missed the thumb entirely. Instead, his mouth smashed into both the corner of Hermie’s mouth, and the skin of his cheek.
Normal pulled away at the speed of lightning, mortified out of his mind.
“ Shit . Hermie, I’m so s- OW!!” In the motion of sitting up, Normal hit his head hard on the edge of the shelf they were sitting under.
He fell back forwards, holding the back of his head in his hands.
“Woah. Woah! You okay?” Hermie asked, flirty facade immediately falling away, replaced with a look of genuine concern on his face.
“Aaaagh. Only physically,” Normal responded, refusing to take his head out of his hands.
“You’re supposed to be Breaking Free, not... Breaking your skull, Normal.”
Normal pulled his head out of his hands to give Hermie a look like “ Seriously??”
“Okay, not the time.”
Normal sighed. “I’m so, so sorry, Hermie. I was really worried I was gonna fuck this up somehow, and I did, and. Aaargh .”
“Normal. It’s… fine. I’ve worked with many actors who have been so much weirder about a stage kiss. It’s your first time. Although I can’t say anyone else has ever half-kissed me and then hit their head on a shelf.”
Normal groaned, and Hermie put a hand on his shoulder.
“Deceptively, the act of putting a hand over someone's mouth and kissing it believably is much harder than it seems.”
“Do you think it’d be easier to just, like… kiss somebody for real?” Normal asked, curiosity getting the better of him.
“I wouldn’t know. Never done it before.”
A pause. Normal made reluctant eye contact.
“...Me neither.”
Maybe it was that he just hit his head pretty hard, or that they were already close enough that they were within Easy Kissing Distance, but Normal couldn’t help but steal a glance down at Hermie’s lips.
It was unmissable, considering they were already holding each other’s gaze, and Hermie did the same in return, leaning in just a little further, the charismatic facade gone entirely as the two of them hovered for a moment.
Normal hesitated, then figured he couldn’t fuck this up any more than he already had. He closed the gap, heart pounding in his ears.
It wasn’t what anyone else in the world would call a good kiss. Two weird teenage boys who had never kissed before, cramped awkwardly underneath a shelf didn’t spell out “good kiss” to begin with.
But something about the way Normal grabbed onto Hermie’s sleeve, and the way Hermie ran a hand through Normal's hair- made his heart just feel so full . Neither of them wanted to pull away.
When they did, they just sat there in silence, foreheads almost touching, neither of them sure of exactly what to say.
After a while, Normal finally spoke in a whisper.
“Um. By the way. Did you want to stay for dinner? I forgot to ask, and my mom really wanted to know.”
Hermie just stared at him for a second before grabbing his face to pull him in for another kiss.
