Chapter 1: 1: The Aggravating Start
Chapter Text
"You'll do nicely."
My peaceful morning is rudely interrupted by a voice from above. I quickly turn my attention away from my newest painting to...I actually don't know what that is. It kind of looks like a man if he were comprised of two different halves surrounded by leaves? One half of him devoid of any color and general facial features other than a single eye; the other is snow white and a bit overly expressive. Not to mention he's halfway poking out of the tree I'm currently sitting in.
In almost a blink, he lunges down toward me. I stare at him with unwavering eyes and don't move a muscle. Just as his leaves begin to surround me, I pull my face mask down and release an abrupt, yet articulate scream in his direction. The visible sound waves barrel toward the creature and the smug grin on his white half drops. I watch his form fly off into the distance, hopefully far away. With a soft sigh, I replace my face mask and continue to work on my painting. By the time I get another stroke down on the paper, the creature appears again, but this time in front of me.
"Why, you are different." The white half muses.
"Annoying is more like it." Another voice interjects. This one is cold and gravelly, a stark contrast to the other whimsical one. Great. Any shrivel of peace I thought I could get us tossed out of the metaphorical window.
"You might be more interesting than I assumed. What do you think?" The white one lightly holds his face in his hand as the other grumbles.
"Doesn't matter to me. I just want to get this over with quickly either way. I'm hungry."
Pause...hungry?! My eyes widen slightly at this. I like to think I'm relatively decent looking, but I'm not a human snack. I poof my materials back into their appointed scroll and leaned toward them. I replicate the white side and put my head in my hand as I analyze the being before me.
"Ah, she is interested! Wonderful!" A maniacal tone coats his once energetic one just as they disappear into the branch beneath me. Another sigh leaves my lungs as I stand and survey my surroundings. The idea of being alone at the moment is a bit worrisome, so, with a series of hand signs, I summon my ninnekos. Four of them appear before me and greet me kindly.
"Lady Eri, how can we help you?" Miko the largest asks me.
"Can you check my surroundings? A weird guy thing just tried to attack me and then randomly left." I sign to her.
"Got it! Spread out and survey the area!" Miko shouts to the others. I watch them scatter and run a hand through my hair.
What the fuck was that about?
**********
The smell of rain swirls around me as I sit under the porch overhang of some abandoned house. Miko and another ninneko named Katsu are curled up against my side in a relaxing cuddle puddle. The silence is deafening over the trickling of the rain, making my brain itch. I pat my two companions before heading inside my current protection from the elements. With a calming breath, I form the hand signs to my favorite jutsu. My "clones" or siblings, as I call them, appear. I say that due to their shocking physical differences to me. All of them have my face, but some have different hair colors and two are male.
"What's up?" The tallest asks me. His short blue hair almost glows against the slowly rotting wood behind him. Before I can reply, Miko and Katsu run inside.
"Miss! Miss! We've detected a presence in the forest!" Katsu squeaks up at me. I look from him to Miko and raise my eyebrow.
"I-it seems to be two of them. We are unsure of their strengths, but they seem to be heading directly this way." Miko bows to me as she explains. I nod to her and turn to my clones behind me. They all give me acknowledging glances before we head out onto the porch again. The rain has almost stopped at this point and I can see the two individuals off in the forest. My clones and ninnekos stand beside me as we await the strangers' arrival.
Before we know it, the two are now just yards away. One is tall with disheveled black hair as well as an orange mask covering his entire face and the other is shorter with bright blonde hair. They stop and proceed to stare in our direction. I decide to step forward into the mere drizzle and walk a few feet toward them before stopping. I cross my arms and continue to mildly glare at them. They're both wearing black cloaks that are covered in red clouds? Peculiar.
"Not a talker are ya, un?" The blonde shouts rather blatantly. I tilt my head to the side and continue to stare at them. My eyes bounce between the two, patiently waiting for one of them to speak again and I don't have to wait long.
"Remember Deidara-senpai! Zetsu said she never spoke until she screamed at him!" The taller one almost squeals at the blonde, "Look at her hair! Such a pretty green like the tree leaves!" He nearly prances over to me before his arm was grabbed by Deidara.
"Tobi you idiot of course I remember! I just wanted to see if he was right or if she was just scared of him, un." He pulls Tobi back to his original spot and turns back to me, "So can ya talk, or are you mute?"
A smile tugs at my lips underneath my mask as I give them a single nod. I turn my back to them and urge Miko towards me. She approaches me hesitantly and stands at my side. I begin signing, rather quickly to the pair in front of me.
"Oh! Miss Eri says that she can speak, you just wouldn't like the results if she did. That's not to be necessarily as a threat, just a precaution." She finishes as I do and scampers back with the others.
"Now, what the hell does that mean?! What's with the riddles?!" Deidara throws his hands up in the air exposing his extra mouths. Oh God, mutant hands.
"Deidara-senpai please be nice to her!" Tobi shouts as he grabs Deidara up in a tight hug, tears pouring from the eyehole in his mask. They begin to lightly quarrel in front of me, Deidara yelling obscenities at his partner. This goes on for at least a minute before my fuse finally burns up. I pull down my mask as they start getting a bit closer to me.
"Knock it off." Is all I say. The two of them freeze up briefly before separating. They stare at me for a moment and then look at each other. I cross my arms again and shift my weight onto one hip. My facemask shifts gently against my neck as it settles into a new position, "Good enough for you?" They both visibly tense again and whip their heads toward me. I smirk and spin around toward my clones. They all nod and form their hand signs, their instruments appearing before them. I look back at the unusual pair behind me with a glint in my eye, "How about a demonstration?"
The soft rise of a guitar strum floats through the air and crescendos into an intense metal melody. My vocals flow from my throat, rising and mixing with the instruments being played behind me. At the crescendo, I release four guttural screams at the pair opposite of me. Their bodies appear almost frozen, a single streak of blood runs from the blonde's ear and down his face as I continue with the chorus of my piece. I repeatedly go through verses, shrieks, and choruses as I watch the two of them fight against the bonds holding them in my jutsu's grip. My clones behind me play in perfect harmony, backing me when needed.
I continue to walk toward them as the song begins to come to an end. I stop a few feet in front of them, surprised that they're still standing. Just as I finish and cross my arms over my chest, a small explosion goes off. It sends me back several feet and I slide through the slimy mud all the way to the porch behind me. My clones and their instruments are long gone by this time, poofing away with the blast. I prop myself up on my hands and take in a deep enough breath to get a decent cough out of me. The cold and gross feeling of the mud on my skin sends a shiver up my spine as I pull myself to a standing position.
"Both of you did so well Deidara-senpai! Doesn't she have a beautiful voice?!" Tobi shouts from behind the cloud of debris. A chuckle echoes out from his partner.
"She's definitely interesting, even though my ears are bleeding, un." Deidara and Tobi step through the settling dust and stand a few feet away, "What do you think about joining our organization?"
I just stand there. My eyes are glued to the men before me, rolling over the question in my mind. Organization? Is that what that leaf guy was talking about the other day? I tilt my head to the side and gesture for him to continue.
"It's super fun! Other than when Deidara-senpai tries to blow me up. Everyone is so strong and cool! I know you'd fit right in-! Uh..." Tobi pauses and angles his head just like mine which pulls a chuckle from me, "What's her name Deidara-senpai?" He turns to his comrade who groans and punches him in return.
I'm not really sure what possesses me to do this, whether it be my odd sense of justice or the fact Tobi said my hair was pretty. I walk up to the huffing Deidara and send a right hook to his face. His smaller frame flies to the side and rolls in the mud until he hits a tree.
"WHAT DO YOU GET FROM HURTING SOMEONE WHO IS NICE?!" I holler in his direction. The sound waves hit his body and he screams out, a small amount of blood runs from his mouth and ears. I feel a hand gently grasp my shoulder and my body goes rigid.
"It's okay! Tobi isn't very smart, so it's okay sometimes! Don't worry! Deidara are you okay?!" Tobi calls out to his companion and runs rather goofily to the blonde, helping him up gently, "Please consider joining us! It would be so fun to fight beside you!" They go to jump away into the trees above, but I raise my hand to stop them.
"I'm Eri."

Chapter Text
The rain never stopped in Amegakure; in spring, summer, morning or evening it was pouring. My eyes flick down to the piece of paper I found just this morning addressed to none other than myself. The instructions were simple:
Meet at the tallest building in Amegakure in four days.
Easy enough.
I arrive in just over three days, thankfully with enough time to visit the ninneko outpost here. Miko is normally stationed in this area, so it's much easier to find her in person than to disrupt her day by summoning her. I wander the semi-familiar streets until I come upon the recognizable alley. I slip my cat ear headband on and knock on the metal door at the dead end. A small hole in the door slides open and two eyes peer out at me.
"Password." The older feline grumbles out.
"Tuna." I whisper out.
The ninja cat on the other side tenses before sliding the small window shut. A few creaks later and the door slides open. I'm motioned inside and head down the correct passageway, the damp and slightly rusty walls echoing my footsteps slightly. The maze of hallways almost feels neverending when I visit this building. Before I know it, a familiar door comes into sight. A warm glow emanates from the crack below it and I give a sharp and specific knock. The pitter-pattering of paws can be heard on the other side before Miko whips the door open.
"Miss Eri! What a lovely surprise! How can I be of assistance?" Her voice is sweet and chipper as always.
I need you to assist me to the tallest building here in Amegakure. I've been summoned there by... I'm unsure how to finish signing my sentence. Miko's eyes get a little wide before she replies.
"The home of Lady Angel? She watches over the entirety of Ame. What do you think she wants with you?" Miko's tail twitches around a bit, anxiety slipping out into her words.
I think it has to do with the guys who I fought not that long ago. That organization the blonde one spoke of? That. I throw my hands to my sides as I finish and sigh. Miko nods and rubs a paw across her chin in thought.
"Lady Angel watches over and protects the Rain. I believe she could be someone you can trust. You would like me to accompany you to translate, correct?" She turns slightly back into the room, ready to grab her gear pouch on my command. I nod to her with a smile, but hold out my hand.
I arrived with one day left, ahead of schedule. Should I stay here with you or should we head to the location I was given? I furrow my brows as I sign, my confusion bleeding onto my face.
"Actually, we might want to go ahead and get going. Maybe being early can give you a good first impression!" Her voice is joyful, easing my nerves. I nod to her and we head off to the tallest building in the Village Hidden In The Rain.
We traverse the streets for a few hours, the tones of the clouds changing and darkening slightly as we ease into the early evening. The tower of a building is finally before me. The rain suddenly subsides as we approach, the air gaining a slight tension from my nerves. Miko taps a loving paw on my leg and gives me a reassuring nod. I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding in as we step up to the large metal door. I raise my hand to knock, but it begins to open before I can make contact. On the other side is a beautiful woman with blue hair. We stare at each other for a moment before she speaks.
"I take it that the ninneko is with you?" I nod, "Interesting. Follow me." She turns and begins heading down the hallway behind her. Miko and I quickly follow her inside, the doors closing behind us.
We calmly climb through the levels of the building. Stairs and hallways then even more stairs. I'm sure we've been going at this for over 15 minutes. No further words are even exchanged between us as we ascend adding to the already strained vibe in the air. I take the time to look over her cloak, the red clouds on the fabric flowing as she climbs. My mind flashes to last week and those two guys...they wore the same pattern on their cloaks. Shit. We finally reach another metal door and Lady Angel opens it revealing an overview of not only the entire city, but also a few miles outside into the forest. A tall man with orange hair stands with his back to us, a jutting piece of metal under his feet hovering him above the city.
"Welcome, Eri Koizumi." His deep voice rings in my ears. I freeze in place, my anxiety keeping me where I stand. He turns around and locks his eyes with mine. The purple swirls almost hypnotize me. His face is pale and covered with piercings, largely contrasting with his bright orange strands. I quickly bow to him out of respect as he speaks again, "Thank you for joining us earlier than specified. This is Konan." He gestures to the woman with blue hair and she bows to me. I reciprocate the action and glance at Miko with a nod. She moves to my side and I begin to sign.
"Miss Eri says that it's a pleasure to meet you both." They both stare at the two of us. Miko is noticeably more nervous as their intense eyes bore into our flesh.
"A feline translator. It seems you're definitely unique. What do you think Konan?" His gaze shifts quickly to the woman next to me.
"I believe she could be a good addition to our cause." Her words always seem concise and to the point. Both of them are extremely stoic and a little offputting. Before the man in front of me can reply to her, what sounds like wind materializes behind me. I go to turn and see what it is, but a hand on my shoulder stops me.
"Both of you stay turned in this direction please." A deep and intimidating voice almost growls in my ear. Miko and I go rigid and stare forward, "Now, for you two." A finger on my shoulder begins to tap as he speaks again, "I've been watching her as well and reported this information to you, not as a recommendation, but more as an order." His tone changes, a sinister undertone takes over his words and I can see Konan stiffen out of the corner of my eye, "Why don't you show them what you can do, what do you say?" My eyes shoot down to Miko as I begin to sign.
"Miss Eri says she would rather not use her voice when she can expose the entire city. I can tell you about her abilities if that's per-permissible." She stutters at the end, her nerves overtaking her.
"Hmmm..." The man behind me taps his finger again, "Acceptable. Go ahead feline, tell us about your master here." My stomach turns at the term, it's not one I enjoy being referred to. Miko and the others know I view them as equals to me and nothing less, so I've never said I was anything more than their friend. Miko clears her throat before she speaks.
"Of course. Miss Eri can do multiple things with her vocal jutsus: paralysis, bodily control of others, as well as the more damaging actions such as bursting someone's eardrums and vibrating someone's organs until they fail." She paused for a moment to gather her bearings before she continues, "Where Miss Eri was born with three chakra natures, her vocal style can be considered a kekkei tōta called Vocal Release. She can use lightning, wind, and water releases naturally and has a strong grasp on all three." I quickly make a few more signs in her direction, "Oh yes! I am not her only companion summon. There are five other ninnekos. She is also willing to learn anything and put forth effort into trying regardless if she is successful. Lately, she's been trying her hand at Fire Release jutsus."
"Intriguing. Now, Pain and Konan...what would you like the new addition to do?" I can feel the man behind me begin to play with the hair behind my back, the warmth from his gloved hand still radiating on my shoulder. It's been so long since I felt such an intimate touch from another person and even though this is an unnerving stranger, I kind of enjoy his intrusive contact. Before either of them can respond, I pull my mask away from my mouth.
"Wait." I can feel the gentle movements on my hair cease, the two in my sight are visibly more rigid. I swallow to try and ease my nerves, a droplet of sweat rolls down my cheek. A chuckle emits from the hidden stranger.
“Yes? Do you have something to say?” He resumes his motions as he speaks. The familiar action relaxes me enough to continue.
“Who are you?” My voice is close to a whisper. Not at all what I anticipated, but it gets the point across. He chuckles again, heartier than the last, and places his hand back on my shoulder. With a strong squeeze and a light tug, he’s brushing his chest against my back. I can sense just how close his face is to mine now.
“That is not currently your concern.” The warmth of his breath grazes my ear and causes a shiver to run down my spine, “You will be informed in due time. For now, just know that you answer to me.” A gloved finger traces down the side of my face, “You will keep in touch with Pain and Konan, they will be a median communication point between us in the meantime. Until we meet again...”
His warmth dissipates as another sound of wind blows behind me before stopping suddenly. I look between the two remaining strangers, my eyes flicking between the two of them before they begin to speak.
“You will go to our main hideout and await further instructions. Konan, prepare a map for her.” Pain’s voice is stone-cold, unwavering, and full of authority, “It is within a day's travel from here. There will most likely be others from our organization, notify us if they cause you any issues. Your ring will be located in your room-”
I hold up my hand to stop him. I furrow my brows as I turn to Miko and begin signing.
“What kind of organization? I never agreed to anything.” My small friend lays her ears back against her head as she turns her attention back to the man in front of me.
“We are the Akatsuki. We are just ordinary people driven to revenge in the name of justice. You do not have a choice, it is out of our hands.” His tone wavers slightly, enough to tell that he was being honest without any malice. A gentle hand caresses my shoulder and I look over to find Konan with a soft expression on her face.
“It'll be alright. If you need anything, just tap the face of your ring three times and I'll contact you. We already have a cloak made for you, let's make sure it fits.” Konan and I bow to Pain and head back inside the building. Lovely, more stairs.
After trying on my new garment, Konan goes over to make sure it is of proper fit. She nods when she's finished, giving me a slight smile. We make no further conversation as she leads me back to the entrance. The metal doors open slowly to reveal that it's nearly nightfall. A piece of paper floats up and in front of my face, a decently detailed map graces the page. I look over at my new comrade and give her a sincere smile as I bow. She does the same before turning back into the dark hallway we had just come from. I take in a deep breathe and walk back out into the pouring rain.
“Let’s go Miss Eri. We must make haste to make it there in a timely manner.” Miko tugs lightly on my fishnet tights to gain my attention. I nod to her and we begin our journey.
••••
Setting up camp was quick: a simple futon rolled out on a branch high above the ground. Miko and I share some simple provisions I keep packed before curling up together against the trunk of the tree. I stay awake on guard duty after she peacefully falls asleep, my eyes and ear continually scanning the area until she wakes an hour or so later. Now, it's my turn for some much-needed rest.
I'm awoken by soft paws shaking me awake. I groggily wipe the sleep from my eyes as I shift away from the futon. We roll up and put our supplies away in a scroll, taking care to cover any evidence that we were here. We're soon off again on the adventure to our new home.
The leaves brush past us as we jump and run from branch to branch. The map is a little hard to read, but it seems we're getting closer to our final destination. A large mountain begins coming into view as we near the edge of the forest. The sharp, dirt sides shoot straight up into rocky cliffs. There's no way this is a hideout.
We come to a stop just at the base and I run my hand cautiously across the dirt. There are no indicators that this could be housing a criminal organization. I look at the map again, my eyes scanning for something I may have missed about how to enter. I flip the page and finally notice the note I had missed:
Bird, Horse, Monkey, Ram x3
I raise my eyebrows and take a couple of steps back. I fold the paper up and place it back in my pocket. Miko gives me a motivating pat on my leg as I take in a calming breath and weave the hand signs. The dirt and rock layer in front of us glimmer and slowly fade away to reveal a soft meadow leading up to the true entrance in the side of the mountain. My eyes sparkle as I gaze around at the various flowers and plants that dance in the soft breeze. It's almost as if I'm frozen in place until I feel a gentle tug on my hand. I peer down at Miko who has her signature grin plastered on her face.
“Come now Miss Eri.” I nod to her as we slowly walk up to the large wooden doors. As we get within a few feet of the door, a ruckus can be heard from inside. We stop in our tracks and stare at the door as the noise begins to get louder and louder. Suddenly, a body busts through the wood, giving me just enough time to duck down before whoever got launched through could injure me. My neck cracks at the speed I swing my head, my eyes now glued to what once was the door. A large man stands in the dissipating dust cloud, arms crossed over his chest and an overbearing aura oozing from him.
“Fucking old bastard! Chill the fuck out!” I whip my head toward the voice behind me. Another man, this one completely shirtless with his cloak draped around his hips, is on his feet and losing his mind.
“I would if you could learn to watch your mouth and grow up.” My eyes jump to the larger of the two who has stepped out onto the steps in front of him. I can clearly see him now and his eyes bore into mine. Fuck fuck fuck fuck...
“Who the fuck is this? With a cat?! Oi grass head!” I furrow my brows as I slowly turn my head back toward the other, the nickname already shortening my already hot temper, “Who the hell are you?!”
I stand fully upright and begin signing rather aggressively. Miko’s ears lay back as she tried to keep up with me, analyzing rather than translating. I finish what I'm saying with a distasteful gesture and cross my arms. The man before me scoffs and mimics my stance.
“Now what the fuck was all that weird hand shit?! Use your words! Or are you stupid?” He smirks as he moves his hands to his hips. I drop my eyes to Miko who is obviously frightened. She nods and turns slightly in his direction.
“Um, I'm not sure if you'll want to know what she said...she is not very happy-” She’s interrupted by the loudmouth.
“Oh, she's not happy?! What a fucking princess. At least you didn't get thrown through a solid wood door!” He continues his annoying rant and continues to grow louder by the moment. The man behind me is beginning to growl quietly, his anger making the air thick. Everything is just too overwhelming. I pull my mask down, the true nature of my scowl now on display.
“Shut up.” My words are calm and collected, a stark contrast to my expression. He immediately goes quiet and a shocked expression melts over his features, “On. Your. Knees.” He drops to the ground, violently if I may add. A deviant smirk graces my lips as I turn away and begin walking up the stairs. I pull my mask back up and lock eyes with the larger man as I pass him. His green and red eyes send chills down my spine. I give him a nod and pat my leg for Miko to follow me. I hear the light bounding of her paws on the stone and continue inside. The sounds coming from outside begin to grow more violent, including the voice of the shirtless man growing desperate and begging someone named ‘Kakuzu’ to lay off.
Within the hideout is one barren, central room and two large hallways jutting out to either side. I decide to try the right hallway first. It doesn't take very long to discover the end in a rather large kitchen and dining area. It's good to see that I won't be fending too much for myself and can cook some decent meals for once. I turn around and make my way down the opposite hallway. Almost immediately to the right is a branching hallway, I decide to put a pin in that adventure for now. I continue straight and begin seeing a bunch of closed doors. They're all evenly spaced and large enough to be the bedrooms of the others. I arrive at the end and see a piece of paper on the front of the final door.
Eri Koizumi
Well, that's a nice touch. I guess no one has seen this. I shove the page into a pocket and open the door. Inside is a simple bed frame, a closet, and a small desk with an accompanying chair. On top of the desk is the ring Pain had mentioned to me with a small note: left pinkie. The metal glints from the soft light within the room. I slip it onto my finger and admire how well it fits. A sigh escapes my lips as I let my shoulders drop. Miko hops up onto the bed and immediately curls into a small ball, sleep taking her soon after. I gently shut the door, lock it, and remove my nasty clothing, throwing it in a pile in the corner of the room. I unroll one of the scrolls from my pack, make the hand signs, and watch the items appear before me: a pillow, a soft blanket, and a selection of oversized t-shirts. I prepare for bed and hop in beside Miko, running my fingers through her soft fur. The action soon lulls me to sleep, my dreams shielding me from the new commotion going on outside of my door.

Chapter Text
The cold metal under my skin causes my muscles to ache even more than they already do. The restraints on my wrists and ankles dig into my flesh as I try my best to adjust to a more tolerable pain. I open my eyes to take in my surroundings, but it's as if I never raised my lids. As I become more conscious the memories begin to pour into my mind. The prodding. The cutting. The unbearable torture. That's when I start to feel the crusty, dried blood on my skin and the dryness of my throat. I begin to sob, yet no tears roll down my cheeks. My audible cries must have alerted someone as a door creaks open and the blue tank lights flip on. I slam my eyes closed at the sudden brightness that's burning my corneas.
"Aw, are you afraid again little bird? I thought we had discussed this. Perhaps, there is no purpose in life. But maybe, just maybe, if you linger a little while longer in this world, you might discover something of value in it." I dare not open my eyes as I can feel his cold fingers graze my throat.
A sharp and quick set of knocks jolts me awake from the never-ending nightmare I seemingly relive several nights a week. A squealing voice on the other side of the wood draws my attention away from the fading grogginess.
Knock knock knock, "Eri!! Are you okay?!" Knock knock knock knock, "Eri please open the door! It's been days!! I must know if you're alright!!" Tobi's kind and ever-worried voice cracks as I hear him begin to cry. I grab the blanket as I stand and waddle over to the door. Wrapping the fabric around my waist before I unlock and crack the door open. Tobi all but knocks the door down as he throws his arms around my shoulders and begins to sob even harder, "Eri!!! I almost assumed the worse!! I arrived not long after you with Deidara-senpai and have been waiting 3 days! I'm so glad you're okay!!" He begins to squeeze even harder as he cries. He's a lot stronger than he looks, good lord.
"Tobi, you're hurting me." My voice is raspy and still full of exhaustion. I feel the man go rigid before setting me back on my feet ever so gently. I oat him on the shoulder and give him as genuine of a smile as I can. I look back at the bed and see Miko already standing near me with an uneasy look in her eyes. I start signing to her and she instantly perks up.
"Miss Eri says that she can't remember the last time she slept in a normal bed and not a cave or tree or abandoned building. I can vouch for that, I've been with her for a very long time." She looks between us with a little grin on her tiny cheeks. Before I can nod in agreement, the most lovely scent envelops my nose and I take in a rough inhale. Tobi giggles at me before grabbing my hand.
"Itachi makes the best food! He's cooked enough for everyone and you can finally meet everyone and-" I pull back against him trying to free my hand.
"Let go!! Miss Eri must get ready!!" She jumps up and wraps her paws around my forearm and helps me yank my hand free. Tobi makes his hands on his face dramatically as if we could see a blush on his cheeks.
"Oh my!! I'm so sorry!! I'll wait for you to finish up-" He pauses before tapping the wood of the doorframe with his fingers, "Did anyone show you around when you got here??" His inquisitive tone pulls a giggle from my chest as I shake my head no and raise a finger to try and warn him of the upcoming discomfort.
"The two I met when I got here weren't very welcoming. I kind of showed myself, but not everythi-" Tobi remains frozen for a few seconds after I get done speaking. When the jutsu wears off, he stands up a bit straighter and begins to radiate a slightly different aura making the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. He nods before calmly closing my door. I stand there with Miko for a moment as we process our second experience here. I let out a sigh and turn toward my main clothing scroll that's slightly unrolled on the desk. I summon my usual ninja attire: a long sleeve mesh top, a black, sleeveless turtleneck with its attached lower face mask, mesh leggings, black cargo shorts, and my signature sandals. I pull my nasty hair up into a ponytail and have Miko look me over. She nods with a smile and we head out to Tobi.
His attitude isn't the same as it was. He's still very excited to show us around, pointing to each door to let me know whose room is whose and shoes off his messy room with pride. He shows me that the unexplored hallway is the way to the extremely elegant bathhouse. The rest of the place is so rustic and minimal that it's hard to believe such a place is inside of a mountain. He shows me the side I'll be using; originally constructed for Lady Konan and now will mainly be used by me. At the end of his personal tour, we arrive at the kitchen. 6 pairs of intense eyes descend on the two of us, almost strong enough to burn holes in my skin.
"I don't know if Leader has told you all, but this is Eri!! She's so cool and talented and-" Tobi is cut off by the shirtless man I'd previously met.
"That's the weird bitch!! Right there!" He throws himself to his feet and points at me as he continues to spew profanities at me. Everyone groans except for who I'm guessing is Kakuzu who lets out a growl of warning. I slip a finger into my mask and tug it down slightly, enough to expose my lips.
"Sit." I point my opposite free hand toward the ground as I speak and watch as Mr. Angry slams himself into the floor. He immediately whines at the pain and rolls over onto his side. I replace my mask and go back to looking at the other men before me.
All of their bodies are stiff, eyes no longer fixed on the man baby on the ground. After a few seconds, Deidara lets out the loudest cackle which causes Tobi to start giggling like a schoolgirl. A man with blue skin and fish-like features chuckles at the entertainment before lifting a bowl of food to his lips. That's when the heavenly scent blinds my senses once again and my eyes frantically search for its source: the very obvious pot sitting on the stove. My stomach growls with ferocity and I cross my arms over my chest to try and ignore it. I'm apparently the only one to not give it any attention.
"Aw, is the superstar hungry?" Deidara teases as he waves a spoon full of food around. My brow furrows, irritation evident on my face.
"Remember the place we found her in Deidara?! She probably hasn't had a decent hot meal in a while!" Tobi goes to wrap his arms around my shoulders again, but I put a finger to his chest and push him away. The blonde laughs so hard he begins to wheeze. Tobi lets out an audible whine as tears begin to stream down his mask.
I rub my brows as I try to keep my attitude dialed back, looking down at Miko, but she isn't there. I frantically look around and don't see her anywhere. My fingers hook into my mask and I whistle out for her down the other hallway. The commotion behind me goes silent. The tapping of bounding paws echoes down the hall as she appears, running up to me with a smile. I turn away from the group completely and begin desperately signing to her.
I'm so sorry Miko, but please can you help me out here? My movements are growing sloppy as my nerves start to take over. She places a gentle paw on my knee and gives me three taps, our trust signal. She calmly has me turn back to the guys and clears her throat. They all stare at her in bewilderment, apart from the ones who have seen her already...except for you know who.
"See?! A fucking ninja cat!! Everything about this bitch is weird!" He goes to stand back up, but a hand attached to...hair? Tendrils?? This guy is calling me weird?
"Shut your mouth Hidan or I will rip off your head." Kakuzu's grip tightens on Hidan and he tosses him back into the wall behind them. A cloud of dust puffs out around the table causing an eruption of curses and groaning. The men all gradually flow out as the particles settle, lining up along the accessible and clean counter. Tobi is immediately back to work excitedly beginning to tell me about everyone with his extended index finger.
"That there is Kisame Hoshigaki, he's from the Hidden Mist and wields a cool sword." The blue-skinned man looks down and gives me a smirk as he crosses his arms across his chest, " Next is his regular partner Itachi Uchiha, a Leaf ninja who possesses the Sharingan." The man's dark hair sways as he turns to me in acknowledgment, "You've met Deidara-senpai." Tobi's tone drops slightly and he quickly moves on much to Deidara's protests, "Next to him is Sasori! He's a puppet master. Both he and Deidara create art!" The pair glares at Tobi. I give them all a little wave as Tobi gestures over to the other two, "You've met them, Hidan who can't die, and Kakuzu our treasurer. You've seen a bit of what he can do." Hidan is slupped against the wall unconscious. Kakuzu is relaxed in the chair, arms crossed and brows still furrowed together.
"You're already an annoyance. I don't understand the purpose of this woman." His tone drips with venom, stinging my ego slightly. Before I can say or sign anything, Miko stomps her foot angrily at him.
"You have no idea what value Miss Eri has not what she's been through! How dare you be so disrespectful to her?!" She practically yells with her meek voice, "Miss Eri is a user of the kekkei tōta known as Vocal Release. She was sought after and brutally harmed for her talents. She endured years of pain, escaped with barely her life, and this is what she gets shoved with?! She deserves so much-"
I gently cover her mouth to shut her up and pull her closer to me. Her breathing is rapid. Her heart is also nearly beating out of her chest. I give her a few scratches on the top of her head and pull my mask fully down. The fabric bunches up uncomfortably against my skin.
"I don't like to constantly influence others. I can't turn it off." I stick out my tongue for them all to see. The seal covering my tongue stretches clear down my throat, "This prevents the skill from destroying my body. I prefer to stay silent and can even teach the sign language that I use. I don't know why I'm here, but I am. Anyone who has an issue can deal with it or talk to Pain." Miko's eyes tear up as she looks at me. I give her a pat on the head and pull my mask back up, rising to my full height. As I briefly shift my weight between my feet, I point to the pot of food on the counter. The guys in front of me all turn to look at it while I sign to Miko.
"Miss Eri would like to know if she could eat some of that. If not she can make do on her own." Her voice cracks before turning back into her usual chipper tone.
Itachi turns back and nods to me, a clean bowl outstretched in his hand. I hesitate before retrieving it gently and slotting myself between him and Kisame. The mixture of noodles and vegetables is still steaming. The aromas entangle themselves with my senses. I scoop out enough for Miko and I to share. As I go to leave, Itachi holds out a pair of wooden sticks toward me. What's the point of those? I guess my confused expression caught the group's attention.
"Have you ever seen chopsticks before?" Kisame's raspy chuckle startles me slightly. Chopsticks?? I shake my head as I look back between everyone. Hidan, who is apparently now conscious, bursts out into a cackle.
"Where did Leader find this bitch?! Who's never heard of chopsticks?!" He rolls onto his side and clutches his stomach while he laughs. My gaze drops back to Miko who is visibly furious. Before I can intervene, she launches a kunai into the middle of Hidan's forehead. His joy immediately crumbles as he scrambles to remove the blade from his skull; curses fly around the room.
"Miss Eri didn't endure Orochimaru for years just to be tortured by you! Learn some respect!" She growls and readies herself with another kunai. I pat my leg sharply to gain her attention. Her head whips in my direction and I shake my head at her, gesturing with my hand for her to follow me. I look back at Itachi and take the sticks from him, observing them all curiously. Miko and I turn away from them, heading back down the hallway to our room.
We sit together on the floor, both of us staring at the carved sticks in my hand. I begin holding them in various ways and attempting to pick up the noodles. One in each hand? Fail. Holding them together in one hand? Nope. With my last ounce of sanity, I slam the sticks onto my desk and adjust myself in front of the bowl again. We begin to chow down- holy shit. This is one of the best meals I've ever had. Both of us pause before tearing into the food like ravenous beasts. It doesn't take long for the bowl to become empty and for us to lay back on the floor, groaning at our full bellies.
My eyes begin to trace the lines in the bedrock ceiling, thoughts clouding my mind. How is this what my life has come to? I shouldn't have given up my freedom so easily. I feel like an unwelcome nuisance, someone adopted into a displeased family. The scenery of my earlier nightmare swirls in my mind. The dirt and stone rooms, the metal tables, the glowing tubes, that bastard's snake eyes; I see it all frequently and it's almost like I never left. It feels as if everything up until this point was in vain.
"Eriiii~" Knock, Knock, Knock, "May I come in, please?~" Tobi's whiny voice is muffled by the door. He knocks again, more gently this time. I sigh, slightly out of annoyance at having to speak and slightly due to the interruption.
"It's open." A few seconds pass before the door cracks open and Tobi's orange mask peeks in. I haven't moved from my original laying position on the floor, my eyes still fixed on the ceiling.
"Well, uh, everyone was wondering if maybe you could, uh..." He shuffles in a little more and begins to twiddle his thumbs. He keeps running around the point with a series of uhs and ums, the tension in his voice growing. Before I can say another word, the wood of my door is split and Tobi is now laying on my bed. I immediately sit up to find Hidan standing in the cloud of what was once my door.
"Since the dweeb can't get to the point. We all want to gauge your skills and need you to, as Deidara said, "perform"." Hidan does physical air quotes around the word perform as if it meant anything other than its the literal meaning. I sit there and glare at him. Tobi gathers his wits and gently hops off my bed, standing next to my sitting form. Miko gives me a questioning look and I begin to sign at her.
"Miss Eri says that you owe her a new door and that she doesn't have to do..." Her ears fall back onto her head, "I'm not sure that I can say that..." She looks down at the empty bowl between us. I roll my eyes and run a hand through the loose strands of hair that have fallen out of my ponytail.
"I don't have to do shit. Now, quietly leave." My voice is calm, yet aggravated. Hidan stiffens before turning around and gracelessly marching away. Tobi begins to as well, but I throw out my arm to stop him, "Not you. Sit." He unceremoniously flops onto my bed, "Explain." I stand and take a seat in my desk chair.
"After you left the kitchen, Deidara-senpai and I started arguing about your singing. I, of course, think it's incredible. Deidara just has a poor view of art." His words tumble out of his mouth like rocks off the side of a mountain, quick. I nod to this and tap my fingers on my knee, "They want to know who's right. Since we're the only two to have heard you."
I stare at him, my mind bouncing my choices around. I could waste my current chakra level on something so menial...or I can tell them all to go to hell. Something on my face must have changed causing Tobi to place his hand over one of mine. My mind clears as I look down at his gloved hand gently hovering on top of mine.
"Don't feel compelled to do anything you don't want to do Eri-sama. You do have a beautiful voice." I glance back up at him and can almost see a glint in the hole of his mask, "I feel like it's too good not to share, even with the effects." He tilts his head as if to show his sincerity. I keep my eyes locked on him, unmoving. Tobi isn't the easiest person to read, but something about him seems familiar? The heat radiating through his glove is comforting and kind. I sigh heavily through my nose and drop my eyes to our hands on my knee.
"What do you think?" I sign to Miko with my spare hand. Her little ears immediately perk up and she nods at me. I peer up at Tobi and see he's still watching me.
"Might as well get it over with so they know what to expect." His hand drops onto mine, completely solid and still like a statue. After a few seconds, he lunges at me and wraps me in a bear hug.
"THISISSOEXCITINGICANTBELIEVEITLETSGO!" Tobi all but screams.
He grabs my hand and begins to pull me toward my doorway. I reach down quickly and grab the bowl off the floor as he breaks into a hard jog. When we reach the empty living space I see the others all lined up, sitting in chairs. Their own conversations die down and their eyes all turn to us. I tug my hand from Tobi's and make my way into the kitchen to wash the bowl I have; trying my best to avoid their persistent stares. They soon continue where they previously left off.
I step into the doorway after I finish, leaning onto the cool stone and crossing my arms as I watch the group bicker among themselves. Itachi is the only one who isn't in a conversation. His eyes are trained forward and are full of focus. Oddball out it seems. Kisame is the first to notice me standing around.
"Tobi and Deidara have really spun an inconsistent tale about your skills." Everyone grows quiet at his words and turns toward me once again, "So, who's right?"
I shrug at him and turn back into the kitchen. I grab the only chair remaining, place it in the center of the room facing away from my new comrades, and weave my most used hand signs. The siblings appear in a puff of smoke, instruments quickly form in their hands.
"What is this? Are we a performing pack of monkeys or something now?" The blue-headed clone, who I call One, spits out. His hands rest on his guitar that hangs across his body as he sneers at the group behind me. I glare at him as I pull my mask around my neck and sit in the chair in front of him.
"No. New comrades." My tone is sharp and to the point. I cross my legs and sign to the siblings: "Your choice of song". They all smile and nod at me, but I hold up my hand to stop them. I sign again: "Do. Not. Hurt. Them". Their smiles fall while an array of groans and "What"s are let out. I gesture to them with my hand to get them to go on and play, they glower at me.
They soon begin to play an intense metal rhythm. The subtle glow of the chakra forms around their instruments. The rough and gravelly guitar dies down as I begin to sing. My voice is melancholy as I lace it with as much emotion as I can muster at the moment.
I wrote this particular song a few years after escaping Orochimaru and living in seclusion. A grown woman had come across me living in a cave near her home and decided to take me in. She was so kind and hospitable. She even taught me the basics of ninja tools and how to protect myself. One day, she brought back a small cat plush for me from a nearby village and I just couldn't contain my excitement. My uncontrolled squeals burst her eardrums and caused blood to run from her facial orifices. Not even 5 minutes passed before she was gone; an excruciating death I had no understanding of. It was all my fault. That's the day when I decided my abilities would have limits:
•no excessive talking
•no excessive harm unless needed
•don't let it control you
The chorus picks up and I let it out. The emotions I've been swimming in ever since that mysterious stranger coerced me into coming here and joining this group. The chakra waves from my voice scatter into the air and begins to vibrate the stone walls more intensely than before. During the next chorus, the waves from my screams and growls push the front legs of the chair off of the ground. They slam back into the dirt as soon as my voice lightens up again for the chorus. The music flows through the air, the notes carrying the song to its end. The siblings and their instruments disappear soon after. I lean forward slightly and cough into my fist, my throat rather dry from the dust in the air. I stand quickly and grab the chair as I turn around. When my eyes fall onto the men before me, I stop. Hidan's jaw is almost on the floor. Deidara has a smug grin spread onto his cheeks. Tobi is a mess with tears flowing from his eyehole.
"Impressive." Kismae leans back and crosses his arms, his toothy smirk shining. I shrug at him once again with as neutral of an expression as I can muster. He goes to speak again but is rudely interrupted when Hidan grabs me by my shoulders and begins shaking me back and forth.
"HOW CAN YOU BE SUCH A BITCH, BUT SOUND LIKE THAT?!" He screeches right in my face. I'm immediately overestimated and kick him in the groin to get him off of me. He falls to his knees as I go to the kitchen sink and shovel water into my mouth to ease the itch in my throat. I wipe my mouth and quickly walk past them to get back to my room to avoid any more weird interactions. Miko bounds down the hall after me, her gleeful giggle bouncing off of the stone. She shuts and locks the door behind us as we enter the room. I flop face-first down onto my bed and groan.
What did I get myself into?
Notes:
Hope you enjoyed this one!! I’m definitely doing a slow build with this one on accident, I just want to get a lot of info in first before I get to that.
Let me know what you think!
Any song suggestions would be appreciated :D

Chapter Text
It's apparently a rare occurrence for all of the Akatsuki to be in one base at the same time. Pain must have everyone on their toes and working for the cause...seems excessive. Today is the last day that they're all here and I have been pestered for hours now to give them all another "performance" before the pairs begin setting off on more missions. Due to Hidan busting my door in and not replacing it yet has made this way more annoying than it could be.
First, the asshole himself woke me up at an odd hour trying to wager with me. Miko and I threw kunai at him until he left. Second, Deidara sauntered in a couple of hours later like he owned the place. He sat next to me on my bed as I tuned one of my instruments and began trying his hand at begging me. His whining fell on deaf ears until Sasori came to retrieve him. The next hour carried Tobi to my room with too tight of hugs while I was trying to work on a new piece. His pleas and whines soon turned to crying and sobbing, his tears began to stain papers. Miko scolded him as she ushered him out. Last of all is Kisame.
"Come on doll, please. Who knows when we will all see you next." His large frame fills my doorway. The loose smirk on his lips is almost endearing. I sigh deeply and rub my brows, the tension in my head beginning to aggravate me.
"You are not the first, nor will you be the last to ask Miss Eri to sing today." Miko pipes up from my bed, her body curled up in my blanket and a scowl on her little face. I sign to her from the closet door; my mind focused on putting my clean laundry up to dry, "She says she isn't some circus animal here to entertain you." She lays her head back down and buries herself in the soft fabric. Kisame only chuckles at her before stepping more into my room.
"I don't think that at all. Your voice is just..." He pauses as he approaches me. I keep my back to him, but can still feel him close behind me, "Your voice is just so beautiful." His voice is almost a whisper as he leans toward my ear. A shiver runs over my body and I pull my mask down.
"Get back." My tone is soft as I command him backward. I turn in his direction and cross my arms. A deeper smirk is glued on his face as he watches me. I step forward, scanning over his body while I tap a finger to my chin, "Maybe I will IF you can beat me in some friendly combat." I stop my wandering eyes when they lock onto his.
"Come on, I don't want to hurt-" He begins, but I hold up a hand to stop him. Now it's my turn to smirk.
"No weapons. Only jutsu and hand-to-hand." I poke a finger into his broad chest and push him back slightly. He shakes his head a few seconds later. The expression on his face softens as he looks down at me while one of his hands pats me on the shoulder.
"How about I learn that hand language of yours instead? I feel like that's a fair trade and you won't have to waste chakra in a fight." He crosses his arms over his chest triumphantly, mimicking me. My shoulders release the tension they were holding and my eyes drop to the stone floor. No person has wanted to learn my created language before. I roll the ball around in my head for a few seconds before looking back up at him and nod. Kisame smiles and goes to turn back toward the hallway, but I grab his arm.
"Not only you. Everyone." His eyes flick back to me and the shit-eating grin on my face. He sighs and nods, using my attached hand to pull me out into the hallway with him. I can't help my shocked expression as he gently sits me down in a chair opposite the rest of the guys. Kisame takes his seat next to Itachi and sighs.
"She has a proposition." The guys all turn to him, "She wants us to learn her hand language." Hidan and Deidara grown and throw themselves back against their chairs. I cross my arms and watch them all speak and bicker at one another. Kisame, Itachi, and Kakuzu all sit and stare at me while the others begin to get more rowdy.
I clear my throat once, Sasori turns his attention to me. Alright, that's one. I clear my throat again, but much louder this time. Those left over all grow quiet and watch me. I nod to them with a small smile.
"To start, what are some specific words you'd like to know?"
A half hour later, the guys are now intently watching and repeating my motions with ease. The immature ones wanted to know obscenities and perverted words and phrases, but they were quickly ignored. We went over the basics: hungry, food, drink, water, help, tired, etc. Itachi caught on quickly and asked for assistance with forming full sentences to which I happily obliged. I even gave them all personal signs for each of their names.
"Hey bitch lady!" Hidan hollers from his seat. I pause my signing to Itachi and turn my head toward the interruption. I sign my name to him slowly, my eyebrows raised for emphasis. He groans and successfully performs the sign before he continues, "When are we getting that song? You said this was what we had to do for you to sing again." He crosses his arms as Deidara agrees with him.
"Yeah! You said you would sing for us!" The blonde is now standing in front of his chair. He taps his foot with his hands on his hips, an aggravated look on his face. Before I can reply to either of them, a piece of paper floats into the room. I watch as it flips and circles in the air before it lands on my crossed legs. The men before me grow quiet as I pick it up and read it.
You will accompany Itachi and Kisame on their next mission. Be ready by daybreak.
I groan and throw my head against the wood behind me. I look at the paper again, even flipping it over to check the other side, but that's all it says. After Hidan and Deidara pick their complaining back up, I lean forward and do two signs: Itachi, Kisame.
"What about fish guy and Itachi?!" Hidan rises to his feet and aggressively throws his hands on his hips.
I ignore his childish display and stand, making my way over to the listed pair. I hold the sheet of paper out to Itachi. He takes it gently and reads it over before passing it to his partner. Kisame chuckles and passes it back to me, a smirk never leaving his lips.
"Better go and get your rest. You won't keep up with us if you're tired." The blue skinned man crosses his arms and looks over at his partner. Itachi gives me a nod, a steady gaze raking over me. A chill shoots down my spine and my attention is brought back to the now yelling man child...children? Both of them could be considered children.
My gaze follows as Deidara and Hidan almost scream in each others faces. Kakuzu and Sasori have long left to their rooms to prepare for their missions. Tobi is curled in a ball in his seat, obviously sobbing and begging the pair to stop. I nearly get my eyes stuck inside my skull from rolling them so hard. I walk slowly up to the pair, shoulders square and a neutral expression on my face, and simultaneously kick one and punch the other in their faces. They drop to the ground cursing while holding their broken noses, blood dripping onto the stone floor. I turn back to the others, nodding to Itachi and Kisame. Tobi is already out of his seat and almost as his tight grip around my shoulders. I dip down and away quickly, stepping on both Hidan and Deidara as I walk back towards my room.
"Eri!!!~ Please wait!!" Before I can turn around, a strong pair of arms and legs wrap around my torso, "Thatwasamazingyoureallyknowhowtohandlethi-" I can't even get a word out as we quickly fall back onto Tobi. He grunts softly as his back hits the stone...even more so when my weight lands on top of him. I would get up, but his grip has not lessened. It feels as if it's getting almost..tighter? The warmth radiating from him was comforting, yet suffocating this way. I wiggle around and try to get out of his grip. I sigh in defeat. My eyes trace the patterns in the stone above my head as I steady my hands against the rock beneath me. In a slow, but solid, motion I have us both upright again, "I knew you could do it! You're so strong and pretty!" Tobi exclaims as I continue walking to my room. Not having a door makes things easier for me.
With the man still attached to my back, I flip face first into my mattress. Tobi is still talking nonstop, his words aren't registering at all. I mumble something into the plethora of fabric beneath me and he pauses.
"What did you say?" His arms and legs unwrap themselves from my body as well as his added weight lifts. I push myself up, taking a seat on the edge of the mattress and sigh.
"Could. Not. Breathe." I sign to him. He tilts his head slightly and I sigh again as I pull my mask down, "Couldn't breathe." He nods after a few seconds and takes a seat next to me. I can feel his intense stare though the eyehole in his mask remains dark.
"Your voice is lovely." It was almost a whisper, but I definitely heard it. I turn my face toward Tobi not expecting him to be so close. I can see his eye now, the dark orb sparkles back at me and I can't help but to stare, "Sing again."
I'm not sure of the feeling that compels me, but I know I need to play. I get up and grab one of my tool scrolls. After forming the appropriate hand signs, one of my acoustic designs appears on my desk. I hold it in my hands, testing the strings to see if they sound as the should. I take a seat next to Tobi on my bed and make the handsigns for The Siblings. They all appear in various spots around my small room. They notice the instrument in my hands and all weave their own signs, matching acoustic models appear with them.
"Oi, what is this?!" One's voice drips with annoyance. I throw an almost deadly look in his direct.
"Practice." He nods to me and repositions himself to a more fitting playing posture. I take a quick survey of the room and notice Miko is no longer around. Must have been called back to her duties.
I prop the instrument in my lap and give it a precautionary strum. A faint rumble of footsteps echoes down the hall, the origins of the noise definitely the two from earlier. As they get close to my doorway, I begin to play the opening notes to the song. The soft, acoustic notes bounce off of the stone walls creating an ethereal aura to the music. The Siblings pick up their parts just as the words begin. Three's usual drum set is replaced with a hollow wooden box, the rest have an amalgamation of different string instruments.
We crescendo into the chorus, the harmony of our voices echoing perfectly. The song sounds even better than when we played it different caves. Tobi watches me intently, completely unmoving. When we reach the instrumental section, I let go.
I forget where I am, the predicament I've gotten myself in, the stone walls surrounding me; it's as if I'm back in the meadow near my home village staring at the setting sun. The heat and breeze on my face, blowing the loose hairs across my skin. I've never wanted to be anywhere more than there again. It was so long ago at this point.
I lull down into the final verse, my voice softening as does my strumming. I close my eyes as we pick back up into the chorus again. I pour my heart out. All of the pent up things I have been feeling all but tumbles out in my words. By the time we've come to the final notes, tears are streaming down my face. My arms drop to my sides and The Siblings all poof away.
"Damn. I thought the wimp was a crybaby." My neck cracks as my head spins in the direction of where my door should be. Hidan is standing in the front of the small group of guys. Deidara and Kisame are standing directly behind him while Kakuzu can barely be seen from the right. I go to chuck a kunai at him, but Tobi's strong arms loop around my own.
"Don't let him get to you Eri!!~ It's okay to cry!!" He pulls me back against his chest as I try to shimmy from his grip.
"Aw look, Tobi likes Eri. How cute that the brat-" Before Deidara can get another word out, the overstimulation overtakes me and I release a blood curdling scream. Kakuzu had shut his door by then leaving the other four to be assaulted. The three in the hallway drop to their knees while clutching their ears, blood running from their noses. Tobi feels as if he went limp behind me, his arms unwrapping from me. I whip around to check on him and see him lying back against my bed, still breathing. A trickle of blood drips from under his mask. I stand and stomp over to my doorframe, eyeing the trio on the ground.
"Go away." They all groan as their bodies stand and slowly depart, the three of them entering their rooms.
I turn back to Tobi and panic sets in. I quickly grab my spare blanket and pin it over my doorway the best I could. A makeshift door will work for now. I rush to him and even him out on my mattress. I use the hem of my shirt to dab away the blood that has smeared onto his mask. The tears really start to flow down my cheeks, quiet sobs pushing out of my throat. I place my fingers against his throat and feel his quickening heartbeat. Good, he's alive, let's check out the damage. I lift his mask slightly and a gloved hand grabs my wrist. The sudden movement causes me to freeze up.
"Don't cry Eri~, I'm okay!" Tobi's voice is joyful, yet forced. His words only force the tears into running rivers. My knees drop to the stone below as the weeping grows more intense. His hand drops my wrist for the side of my face, the rough fabric of his glove caressing my cheek gently. I drop my head and watched the tears stain the rock.
"I'm sorry." The words are out before I can stop them. His soft touch pauses before hooking his finger under my chin, moving my head so I can face him again. He's now turned on his side, propped up by his other arm. I gaze into the singular eyehole and I can't help to be filled with shame at my actions.
"Don't apologize! Come here~." He uses his free hand to guide my upper half toward his chest. I place my head against the soft fabric of his shirt and feel him hug around my skull. He squeezes softly as he continues, "You're pretty when you cry." I freeze up a bit. What the fuck does that mean? Tobi gently begins to pet my hair, smoothing down the imperfections. He lets go as he pushes himself completely upright, his knees opening to either side of me. I keep my eyes on his mask and the glittering obsidian within the eyehole. The same gloved hand moves to hold my chin between his finger and thumb, moving my head from side to side.
"So precious.." That wasn't Tobi's voice. Who the hell is that? My gaze is locked on the man before me as he lowers his head above me, "Mine." The deep vibrato of his voice almost registers in my mind before everything goes black.
****
"Come on little bird, I know you can handle more than that." His menacing voice almost hisses as the tears continue to run down the sides of my face. I can feel the blood smeared on my neck cooling my skin, "Just one more time and then we're done for the day." I strain against the leather straps that are holding me to the metal table. A sob rakes my throat, only coming out as a guttural rumble. His fingertips press into my throat for what felt like the millionth time today. It feel like he's got his hands in there, ripping and tearing around to find what he's exactly look for.
A crash echoes from outside the closed door. Orchimaru removes his gloves and leaves rather quickly. I pull on my restraints again- my hand is free! I scan my surroundings and find that he's left the small table covered in medical instruments next to me. I grab the sharpest looking item and begin to rip and tear myself free. I scurry to the floor, losing my balance on my weak legs and collapsing. I whine from the pain, but ease myself up using whatever I can get my hands on. My instincts take over and I run for my life. Through hallway after hallway, I finally find a bright light. I sprint for it, watching as it grows closer and closer until I-
I'm jolted awake, covered in a thick layer of sweat. I look around my room, darkness is in every corner besides the blanket covering my door. It's slightly pulled back with the hallway light flooding in and a smaller figure is frozen in place. My breathing can't keep up with my heartbeat. The intruder quickly raises their hands in defense as paring into the defensive.
"It's just me." The light flips on and Itachi finally comes into view. My free hand grips my chest as I slump over and try to fix my panic attack. After a minute of cooldown, he speaks again, "It's nearly sunrise. Meet us out front. Bring provisions." He nods to me and leaves. He doesn't say much does he?
I turn to grab my pack when I realize that I'm still in my clothes from yesterday. What happened last night? I check my door blanket for a rogue Hidan or Deidara and quickly change into my usual ninja gear. My dirty clothes go into another scroll as I scavenge up everything I need including my blanket door. I stare at my tools scroll, contemplating whether or not I should use a weapon I've been perfecting. A shrug graces my shoulders as I reveal them and quickly wrap the long chains around my waist, securing them with a pair of metal hooks. I throw on my cloak and head out into the early morning. My current teammates are waiting for me, Kisame having exited not much longer ago than me.
"Good morning sunshine." His voice is rough, probably having been awoken recently as well. Thanks Itachi.
Kisame's tone with his added grin immediately get on my nerves. As I pass him on the stairs I reach out and give him a solid push to the side. He stumbles and I can see the wrapped sword on his back begin to vibrate. I take that as a sign to hurry on down toward Itachi. He gives me a disapproving glare as I join him in the gravel. I shrug and drop my eyes to my feet, lightly kicking the pebbles around. A strong arm wraps around my shoulders and I go incredibly tense. I use my free hand to sign 'sorry' to the large man. He chuckles and gives my shoulder a sharp set of pats.
"The journey will take two days. We will discuss more details when we are closer. We’re heading east.” Itachi’s tone is grave. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve heard him have anything other than this incredibly serious tone of voice. I nod to him and the three of us head off. As we’re sailing through the trees, I can’t help but recognize that serious tone; though, I remember it being more terror inducing.
I wrap my yukata tightly around myself and smooth my hands over my hair covering. If my memory serves me right, the front desk lady mentioned something about some beautiful scenery nearby. The urge to paint as really been gnawing at me lately, so it feels like as good of a time as any to go see if she can give me some written directions.
I begin to gather my supplies when I commotion outside of my door starts to pick up. I had heard the yelling, but originally didn’t think anything of it…but now it’s full on yells and shrieking of sorts? Just as I step out into the hall to see what was the matter, my door is gone. I turn fully and place my hand against what’s replaced it.
“You’ve both just been swallowed by the mountain toad. It must be humbling to know that you’ve been reduced to toad bait.” A deep voice spits to my left. A large man with spiky white hair has hand-signs formed and a devious smile on his face. I’m instantly grossed out and quickly remove my hand from whatever toad flesh is encasing us. To my right are two men and two children, all appear to be in a fight.
“Stay still. Just remain calm. Trust in my jutsu.” He speaks again, but this time towards the yellow haired kid. The shock on his small face tells me all I need to know: he doesn’t know what’s going on either. I try to flatten myself to the wall the best I can, but I’m spotted by him.
“Percy Sage, who is that lady?” He points to me after is rather loud question. All eyes are officially on me.
“Crap, where did she come from?!” The white haired man all but whines. He’s quick; a flash is whirls in front of my eyes and I’m now shielded behind this large stranger, “I’m sorry young lady. It appears you’ve become caught in our crossfire, but don’t worry I can protect you.” He follows his sentence with a wink. I internally cringe at the thought of this older man.
His attention as diverted back to his previous affair and now I have my chance. I step backwards slowly, watching the exchange before me until I’m touching the spongy toad wall again. I caress the flesh gently, a soft hum floating from my lips. “Please let me through, I mean you no harm. Pretty please dear toad. Your master has made a small mistake and I do not wish to be a part of this.” My voice is quiet, hovering at a whisper as I continue my light touches. A small stream of light begins to poke through just as I hear the men behind me restart their commotion again. A hole just big enough for my to crouch through appears and I take my swift exit.

Chapter Text
Nightfall is upon us. Tonight is the night to execute our course of action and pull this mission to its climax. The plan is simple: infiltrate, have Itachi get the necessary information out of our target, act with complete discretion and only act if it's vital to protect the mission.
I've concealed my chakra and taken to a branch above the small temple. The grounds around it are very open with no vegetation or decent hiding spots. Its going to be more difficult to get inside than we thought. Guards are surrounding the place; evenly spaced out around the entirety of the property. I release a soft sigh before I hop gently through the trees and landing near my comrades.
"How many guards are there?" Itachi's voice is soft yet commanding. I shake my head and sign 'too many'. Kisame chuckles and gives his sword a gentle pat.
"Samehada has needed a good snack." His pride beams in his words. I shake my head at him and pull down my mask.
"There are at least 60." My voice only a whisper is the breeze, "I have an idea." Both of the men look at me curiously, obviously taken aback by my words. Itachi nods in my direction for me to continue, "I can act as a diversion. Distract them enough for you two to get in. Keep them from going inside while you're in there."
The two of them continue to stare at me. My confidence soon begins to waver. Had I said too much? Did I think things through incorrectly? Do they not see me as a valuable member of the team? Why would I even think that I'm as skilled as-
"I'll follow your lead. Kisame?" Itachi turns to his partner, as calm as he ever is. Kisame continues to keep his eyes locked onto me. The intensity makes me feel like prey under the fearless sight of a predator. I quickly hold up my hands and sign 'I do not mean to overstep. If it is not a good plan, you can disregard-'. I'm cut off by a very humored Kisame.
"If Itachi thinks it's a good idea, I will follow you as well." The smirk never leaves his lips.
My brain practically melts. I didn't think the outcome of this idea to be positive considering I'm with the two smartest members of the Akatsuki and they haven't really seen me in a high intensity situation. It's my lucky day isn't it? A shiver of excitement runs down my spine as a grin pulls at my lips.
"Keep a close watch. Move in from the east side when the coast is clear." I clear my throat and take a quick drink of water. I hand each of them a pair of earplugs for later. Finally, I discard my items and cloak at our current position in the forest, give the two a nod, and take off in a soft sprint through the forest.
Once I'm decently close to the border of the trees, I summon The Siblings and give them a general run down of my plan. They all nod and prepare their instruments, taking hidden positions among the trees and concealing their chakra. I nod to them and take out the single kunai left in my pocket. I leave a few randomly placed cuts across my arms, upper torso, and face to emulate an attack. I stick it into the wood of the closest tree as quietly as I can.
The tall weeds and grass aid me in a realistic stumble from the woods. I grasp at the ground as I push myself up to a proper balance. I try to run and start to limp, doing my best to catch the attention of the dozens of guards. As I exit the tree-line, I collapse onto the ground as soft sobs begin to erupt from my chest. Damn I'm good. A gentle hand pulls on my shoulder. I shutter as I push myself up with my hands to look at how many eyes I've gotten turned on me. I squint up into the sun's beaming rays and see that it's one of the door guards hovering over me.
"Are you okay miss? Are you inju-" He doesn't even finish his question as another voice chimes in from behind him.
"Are you blind?! Look at her, she's bleeding! Of course she's injured!" The first man is yanked from in front of me and replaced with a more annoyed one, "Are you armed?!" His tone is frightening, commanding and so loud. I shake my head vigorously and pull out the empty pockets of my shorts, "So what's your business out here? How did...wait, you're in ninja clothes...where's your headband?!" Headband? Oh! Like the ones the others in the group have. I shake my head again and hold up my hands in defense, "Why aren't you saying anything?! Huh?!" He starts to lean in towards my face as he raises his voice. Droplets of saliva fly from his mouth and land on my face. Disgusting. I take a couple steps backwards and point towards my mouth, then sticking my tongue out to show the seal. What they don't know won't kill them.
Just as I retract the muscle back into my mouth, I notice two very agile and silent figures move quickly into the building in my peripheral vision. They made it. Fuck yeah! Though, I can't celebrate just yet. The men before me nod and begin looking between one another. I can hear faint whispers from around me and remember there's a show I need to be putting on.
I shudder, trying my best to shake my legs most of all, and drop to my knees in the dirt once again. The man before me kneels down and helps me stand, walking me over to the steps on the front of the temple. He helps me take a seat on the stone and steps past me.
"Let me inform Commander of this and I'll be back! Keep an eye on her for me while I'm gone." He points to me and begins to make his way through the threshold of the temple. Panic shoots through my soul. I tap my knee twice; the signal has been activated. A rustling emits from the woods and the various guards begin to shout for their captain. The man from before turns around on his heel to face the outcry just as The Siblings step through the woods. The few who I share a resemblance with quickly blow my cover, "Get her!" The Captain shouts as he begins to weave hand signs.
Thankfully, my mask is already down. I point to One just as I begin to sing. The man before me freezes up and his eyes go wide. I smile as I can feel the terror seeping out of him, no...not only him...all of them. I step slowly down the three steps as I begin the first verse. I turn and gesture to the men with each line. As soon as I sing, "Would you get down on your knees for me?" they all drop to their knees. I continue, casually walk around the various ninja who now helplessly watch.
I run my hands along their shoulders at different times, lift their heads and force them to look at me to intimidate them; it feels so empowering. In my 22 years of living, I have never felt like I could be a change. That I have value and an irreplaceable power. Maybe my ego is inflated, but who cares?
Just as I reach the final chorus, my two companions emerge from the temple. Kisame has a huge grin on his face and a small blood splatter on his cheek. That violent asshat. Itachi has the same unimpressed look on his face. They begin walking forward and down the path toward me. I let them go around as I start the finishing line, stepping backward with my comrades. I finish the final words and turn quickly, the siblings all poof away, and we soon hop into the trees. After a few minutes of jumping from limb to limb, a sudden realization dawns on me. What about my stuff? I lose my footing while my attention is elsewhere and fly straight into Kisame's back just missing his sword. Thank god he's a sturdy man. He misses his footing slightly, but comes to a stop on the next branch to turn and check on me with a mild look of concern.
"Tired already?" This bastard. I find my balance again and glare at him from an adjacent branch. Itachi stops a few yards away, having noticed our absence quickly. I let out a disgruntled sigh and sign 'My stuff. Where is my gear?'. I hop over to the same limb as Kisame and cross my arms.
Itachi lands gracefully next to us and unrolls a scroll on the thick wood beneath our feet. With a few hand signs, a small pile of things appear. My stuff! I can't help but to grin as I start to put everything on my person again. I pull my mask up and give Itachi a nod. As if on cue, the three of us continue our way back to base.
The sun faints along the horizon, darkness spreading over the land and signifying the end of the day. We finally come to rest high in the trees on the only branches that could still support us. We face each other in a triangle, monitoring all angles around us. I tuck myself against the trunk and pull a few pieces of dried meat I still have. Just as pop a piece between my teeth the faint sound of rumbling stomachs rings in my ears. I glance up and look between my teammates. The two of them are eating what looks like...black balls?
"I take it you've never seen a food pill either." My eyes flick to Kisame's and then down to the smirk on his cheeks. I shake my head slightly and hold up my ration. His stomach rattles once again and pulls the smug look off of his face. All I can do is chuckle and continue to tear the dried meat between my teeth.
"No, I haven't." My voice is just above a whisper as to reduce a risk of it echoing. I toss him and Itachi a piece and stuff the rest into one of my pockets. Kisame is the first to try, using his incredibly sharp teeth to shred the piece in seconds. These guys don't truly eat in the field do they? Itachi stores his away in one of his various pockets.
"You will become rather acquainted with them in due time." Kisame's chuckle peaks my curiosity. They can't be any good from the looks of them...
I'm on first watch as my two comrades quickly fall asleep. The night is quiet and calming, just the type of environment I need after my first mission. Time flies by and soon Itachi has awoken. He gives me a nod and I cozy up against the tree trunk. Sleep consumes me almost as soon as my eyes close, my dreams greeting me with open arms.
The stone beneath my feet is so cold. My hand runs along the wall to aid in standing as I make my way down the hallway. A pair of doors appear to my left and I instinctively go inside. The room is illuminated in an unnatural green light. I shuffle slowly over to one of a few unbroken tubes and look up at the child suspended within. Their brown hair flows in the liquid around them and their expression is so peaceful. Their eyes closed; muscles relaxed. I almost wish I was in one of these instead of the room I'm normally kept in. My feet drag along the stone as I step up to the next one and examine a similar looking child. They look to be in a worsening state and not at all as peaceful as the last one.
A tingling sensation runs up my spine and I turn around too quickly, stumbling into the glass of the tube behind me. A pair of dark eyes stare down at me with a shocked expression.
Consciousness yanks me back to reality just as a single thought crosses my mind: there's someone close to me. In a quick breeze, my eyes are now open and I'm pressing a kunai into the flesh of whoever dared to get close to me. The haze in my vision finally clears with a grinning Kisame pinned beneath me. The branch I was sleeping on creaks under the combined weight and I can't help but to glare at my comrade.
"Itachi was right. I should not have tried to wake you like that. What...fieriness." He's now smirking at me. I roll my eyes and groan in disgust. I kick Kisame a little as I stand.
"There's no time to quarrel like children. We must keep going. The sun is coming up." Itachi's melodic voice is riddled with a lack of amusement.
I nod to him and jump a couple branches closer. This gave Kisame enough room to stand again and join us. We're finally going back. Though, this wasn't a long mission, being around these guys is draining. My fragile insecurities shake with fear when I'm near people of such skill.
Before we truly set off, Itachi and Kisame look at each other with a knowing look. Kisame chuckles and they sit down again, slightly closer together this time. I stare at them with a puzzled look on my face.
"Pain calls. Keep watch over us for the next couple days." Itachi quickly directs this order at me. They both make matching hand signs and are soon locked in some sort of unconscious state. I can't help but to stare at them in disbelief. Keep watch?! What about a shower?! I grown softly and flop down on the branch closest to Kisame. A couple days? I wonder what this guy has them doing.
Within the next few hours, I discover that babysitting these killing machines is incredibly boring. Just as quickly as the boredom sets in, the memory of my packed belongs pops into my mind. My art supplies! I pull out a matching pair of small canvases; both are prepped and ready to go...but what should I paint? I tap the end of my dry brush to my cheek as I scan my surroundings. My eyes keep pulling back to look between my comrades. I hope they don't mind being focal points.
Itachi is first since I have the clearest angle of him from the specific position I'm sitting in. With varying tones of gray, I recreate the gentle expression on his face, the poised position of his hands, the breeze in the loose pieces of his ponytail. What could happen for a man like him to turn out this way? As soon as I get to the final details I notice the sun has long set and the sky grows bluer. Stars hang in the darkening sky. I sigh and tuck my things away in a scroll and pull my provisions from my pocket. This should be enough to hold me over until they're "awake".
The night is dull, quiet. Not even a breeze blows. The stillness amplifies all of the minute sounds of the forest. I can hear the scampering of nocturnal animals through the brush, the flapping of bat wings, my comrades' hearts beating steadily inside of their chests. I stare into the darkness, thanking the moon for her light whenever the clouds pass. Without this I feel as if I'll go insane without my sight.
The next day is filled with more painting and chewing through my rapidly decreasing provisions. I finish my Itachi piece and quickly move on to Kisame. I have to sit at an odd angle to get a decent and full side view of him. I work extra hard to get his features right. I've never drawn or painted someone with his particular structure. Like the day before, I get to the final details and the sun decides to rest...something I wish I could so desperately do. I lean my head against the trunk of the tree and keep my gaze pointed in Kisame's direction tonight. The hours drag on, but the morning comes soon.
It's like my body is dragging along at this point. If it weren't for the trees dense cover of leaves, I'd be dying of overheating. The breeze still has yet to return and my joy to return to base is dwindling. The unfinished painting lays in my hands as I stare between it and the shark like man in front of me. Not too shabby Eri. I mentally pat myself on the back as I finish it up. I sit back after a few hours and examine my work. I sigh in relief, proud of my efforts.
"Another artist. Where do they find you all?" Kisame's gravelly voice spooks me and I fumble with the two paintings. He chuckles as he and Itachi begin to stretch and groan, "Siting for three days will always be the worst part of that." Itachi nods as he looks at my canvases and paint covered hands. I can see some thoughts roll over in his mind, but he never says a word. As soon as I put them away in my scroll, I go to stand up...only for my vision to go black.
I attempt to blink a few times as my vision returns, but a decently strong breeze startles me. I then notice the grip someone has on my legs and the warmth against my torso. I crack open one of my eyes and the first thing I notice is the blue skin. Kisame. I slightly tighten my arms around his neck and shoulders which earns me a chuckle.
"Exhausted are we?" Just like the morning of our departure, his sarcastic tone strikes a nerve. I elbow him slightly and only get more chuckling. Itachi is a few tree limbs ahead and is blatantly ignoring us. Seems to be something he does often. I try to get Kisame to let me go, but to no avail. I sigh from frustration and watch as the familiar mountain come into view. FINALLY! My head drops gently against his shoulder, a relieved groan slips through this time around.
A few minutes pass and Kisame finally comes to a normal walking pace. I adjust my gaze and see that we've arrived back. I try to wiggle and free myself from my teammates grasp to no avail. His grip only tightens on my legs as we ascend the steps and enter the hideout. He continues back the hallway, stopping in front of my new door. He sets me down ever so gently and turns to face me.
"You won't be any good to us while exhausted. Get some rest." He pats me on the head and moves around me. I quickly grab his wrist, catching his attention, and sign 'Thank you'. He gives me his infamous smirk, "I'll have to take you up on some hand to hand combat after you've replenished your chakra." I let go of him and watch as he enters his own room.
I stand alone now, finally noticing the entire reason I was excited to get back: I need a bath. I drop off my unneeded scrolls onto my desk, as well as my cloak, and head over to the bathhouse. The room itself is beautifully carved into the rock. Intricate designs are etched into the ceiling and walls. I can't help but to stare for awhile as the hot water fills the basin in front of me. I give the door one last check to make sure it's locked and finally strip myself of my foul outfit.
The water is so soothing against my skin. The aches and frustration from staying awake for so long slowly wash away as I begin scrubbing. The silence, though, is bone rattling. I lean back and let the water lap at the exposed area of my neck as I begin to hum. The combination of relaxation and exhaustion soon catches up to me as sleep claims my mind once again.
The soft melody flows from my lips. The excitement on the face suspended before me pulling the gentle notes from my very heart and soul. Even though there are no words, the song weaving through doesn't need them. I place one of my hands against the glass of the tube and drop the current note from my tongue. A mirroring hand gently grazes it's fingertips just where mine sit. We both smile-
My mind is yanked from one of my more pleasant dreams and I am not in the mood for it. The first sight I see when my eyes finally open is that orange mask. What the absolute fuck is going on?!
"ERI! OH MY GOODNESS I THOUGHT YOU WERE DONE FOR!! HOWCOULDYOUFALLASLEEPINABODYOFWAT-" Tobi's shrill voice pierces my already exhausted and infuriated mind. His gloved hands are gripping my wet shoulders and he's pulled me halfway out of the water. I quickly scramble out of his grip, pushing Tobi aggressively into the wall behind him. I dunk myself back into the water until it's up to my neck and point towards the door.
"GET OUT! GET THE FUCK OUT!" The anger seethes out through my gritted teeth. Tobi freezes for a moment before he quickly scrambles out of the previously opened door. The water is cooler now and not at all comforting. I can't even bathe in peace, fucking perfect. I gather my bearings before getting out of the bath, drying myself off, and getting redressed in a spare outfit from a scroll I still had on me. As I reach for the door handle, my hand falls back to my side. The grain stares back at me as my anger melts into a realm of uncomfortably emotions. Tears form at my lash line and I quickly wipe them away as I perform a few hand signs.
"Miss Eri! What is the matter?!" Miko's soft voice rings off of the stone walls.
"Something must have happened to have her in such a melancholic state!" Katsu squeaks out in response to his comrade. Two pairs of paws grab at my hands and I look down into their sweet faces, "We are here for you Miss Eri." I gently run my hands across their heads to give them soft pets before signing to them.
"Being here is just very different. The others are a lot to handle and adjust to..." I pause and look away from them, "The one called Tobi got through the locked door and also thought I was drowning while napping in the bath water...that was humiliating..." I sigh and run a hand through my damp hair. A soft growl rumbles catches my attention from below. I flick my eyes downward and see two very angry kitties. I sigh again before opening my mouth this time, "Don't worry about it. I'll handle it." Their ears lay back against their heads and nod at me.
Beyond the door is the same vacant hallway, but with steam and a humming coming from the other door. Probably Kisame or Itachi, I doubt Tobi would still be that close to me. The soap smell filling the air lifts my mind to a more neutral place and I can't help but to stare at the door for a moment before heading back to my room. The halls are empty, not a soul in sight. Thankfully, no one else is back yet.
Inside of my room is just how I left it...aside from the large lump of Tobi laying face down on my bed. I groan and my companions begin to growl again. Not only does this alert the man in front of me, but it apparently startles him out of my bed. We stare at one another for what feels like several minutes, unmoving, no one speaking a word. I'm the first to break away and look down at Katsu and Miko. I tap them both gently on their heads and point towards the door.
"But Miss Eri-" Miko tries to interject, but I shake my head at her and point again towards to the door, "We shall wait outside..." They both bow their heads and exit the room, closing the door gently behind them.
I turn back to face Tobi, only to have him now inches from me. The two of us are still silent, though I can slightly hear his heartbeat...his steady heartbeat. I step back away from him, only for him to take a step with me. We do that a couple more times before I'm against the wall; the cool stone shooting shivers down my back. He brings his arms up and cages me between his hands, moving his masked face even closer to mine.
"You confuse me." My sentence is short, but gets my thoughts across. Tobi pauses as he continues to stare at me.
"Are you upset?" His voice is calm, a bit off putting from his normal tone. Something isn't right.
"All things considered, I should be more upset than I currently am." I cross my arms over my chest, accidentally grazing the front of his cloak. A deeper chuckle rumbles from his chest and an all too familiar unease sweeps over me.
"Should you?" The voice isn't the same as before, "Does my concern go unappreciated? Or are you just uncomfortable due to the circumstances?" I've heard that voice before...at the top of the tower...those two can't be the same men. My cheeks warm in response to his accusation and I hear another chuckle, this one much louder than the last. Before I can even blink, one of his gloved hands is wrapped firmly around my neck. I grip at his fingers and try to pry them away to no avail. My breathing labors slightly and he runs his other hand across my reddened cheek, "Actually, you’ve failed to communicate to those above you. Since I am your direct superior, I thought the time was as good as any to shed some light.” It is him…he was here this whole time watching me.
“You…it’s been you this whole time…” I shutter a little as my nerves begin to take over. His grip lessens around my throat and his other hand begins to play with my damp hair, threading it through his fingers just as he did that day. A soft knock suddenly radiates through the room.
“Miss Eri? Is everything okay?” Miko’s worried voice can barely be heard on the other side. I look into the blackened eyehole of this man’s mask before speaking.
“Yes, everything is fine.” I try to make my voice as solid and strong as I could as to not cause any suspicion. A satisfied hum resonates through his chest.
“Good girl.” The hand on my neck moves up to cup my face, his thumb running across my cheek, “From now on, I am your leader and the one to guide you. As the others only know me as Tobi, you will continue to address me the same way in front of them as to not gather suspicions.” I nod my nod slightly to let him know that I’m listening, “To you, I will be known by another name.” His voice almost purrs.
“And what would that be..?” My voice is barely above a whisper. At this, he leans back slightly and begins to lift his mask. He pulls it off enough to reveal the right side of his face. Scar riddled, fair skin and a glowing red eye are now looking back at me.
“Madara Uchiha.”
