Work Text:

April 2nd, 2023.

It was around 6 in the morning when Elaina sneaked out of bed - struggling a bit to get Miguel to stop cuddling them so much - to head over to the kitchen downstairs. They went out for a secret grocery store trip yesterday to get all of the ingredients needed for this special day, Miguel’s 27th birthday. Miguel had always said that he doesn’t want much done for his birthdays, so Elaina decided that just baking a small cake and some breakfast for him would be good enough.

Elaina was lucky that Miguel is not only a heavy sleeper, but he doesn’t usually wake up until 11 A.M. on the weekends, giving them plenty of time to fix him a wonderful meal for today.

Opening the fridge, Elaina grabbed all of the different ingredients needed to start making the cake, which was a chocolate-lime combination. It always threw Elaina off when Miguel talked about how much he loved that kind of cake, but hey, who are they to judge? After all, it’s Miguel’s birthday, so they decided that it’s only fair they make his most favourite cake ever - even if it’s such an odd flavour combination it makes them rethink getting up at 6 in the morning just to make it.

After finishing the baking and base frosting process, Elaina grabbed one of their many piping bags and put the chocolate frosting in. They carefully piped small shell-like shapes onto the top and sides, finishing it off with small star sprinkles on the top of the cake. They sighed after they were finished, smiling at how good the cake came out, but grinning at the fact it was for Miguel. They let out a small giggle, thinking of how silly their boyfriend would look eating it. It was a pleasant thought, but Elaina was soon snapped out of it when Miguel walked into the kitchen with only his Spiderman boxers on.

They both stared at each other for a moment, until Elaina burst out into laughter while Miguel stood like a deer in headlights, eventually putting his hands on his hips while Elaina laughed.

“Well, good morning and happy birthday to you, handsome! Rocking the Spiderman boxers again, I see?” Elaina giggled, smiling ear-to-ear.

“Heyy, can a man not wear Spiderman boxers on his birthday? I think it looks fashionable. Plus, I like Spiderman a lot… and I’m the birthday boy, soooo, that means, I can wear what I want!”

“Yeah, if you want to look like an 8 year old!”

Elaina and Miguel exchanged some laughter and jokes before Miguel’s eyes locked with the cake on the kitchen countertop, shaking his hands excitedly.

They noticed his gestures and movement, commenting, “Yes, Miguel, it’s for you. It’s your favourite totally-not-weird flavour combination too.”

“Hey! Chocolate and lime is a totally good and-” Miguel was cut off by Elaina lightly slapping their hand over his mouth, handing him a knife with the other.

“Yes, yes, you can explain how chocolate and lime is quote, unquote, “totally superior to all other cake flavour combinations” later. For the 5th time now. Go ahead and cut your cake already, I didn’t make it just for you to look at it. I made it for you to enjoy it.”

Elaina took their hand off of Miguel’s mouth and watched him roll his eyes and playfully mock them, causing them to chuckle and once again go on their tip-toes to kiss his cheek.

Miguel started to cut what seemed like a slice for himself, only to pick up the 90% of the cake instead, leaving the small slice left. Elaina looked at him like he was completely insane, lightly popping him on his hand, making him put the cake down.

“Ay! I was going to have that!”

“I know you’re going to eat it all at once, and I’m not letting you get a stomach ache on your birthday. Again!”

“Stomach aches are a part of the experience, Elaina! If you’re not getting one on your birthday, you’re simply doing it wrong.”

“Fine! Just don’t come to me when I’m sitting in bed about how much you want me to run my fingers through your hair and hold you just because you have a stomach ache.”

“Well...What if I didn’t have a stomach ache and asked for you to-”

“Eat your cake, Miguel!”

The two burst into laughter again, Miguel immediately picking up the small cake slice he cut earlier and eating it, offering a bit to Elaina.

“Miguel, you know I don’t like this kind of cake.”

“Why, are you cake-ist or something?”

“Oh my God. Never say that again.”

“Why? Are you against certain cakes? Well isn’t that just rude! You’re such a cake-ist, Elaina. I’m very disappointed in you.”

Elaina turned their head and glared at him, Miguel looking away like he said nothing, eating the last bit of the slice.

“...So, do you still want a-”

They cut him off yet again, this time with a full kiss, the two bringing their bodies closer together. It felt like the kiss lasted forever, both pulling away and huffing at around the same time when they needed air.

“That cake… didn’t actually taste.. half bad. At least from what I tasted when I kissed you.”

“See! I knew you’d like it!”

“I may have just baked it well, that’s all.”

Yeah, alright. You can say what you want to, Elaina.”

Elaina smiled at him, embracing him with their arms. He did the same thing, feeling like he was melting into their warm touch, savoring the moment until Elaina whispered in his ear.

“Happy birthday, my love. By the way, you may want to put some more clothes on. You’re still only in your Spiderman boxers.”

All Miguel did was chuckle, whispering back.

“I will, I will…

…I love you, Elaina.”

“I love you too, my “birthday boy.””
