    It wasn't something ghouls talked about. It was a taboo, a topic that was nearly off-limits. Bringing it up would either drudge up terrible memories or spur up fantasies the ghoul wouldn't want to deal with. It was too optimistic of a thought for ghouls to stomach.

    So that's why it was a surprise when Touka and Nishiki told him that ghouls have mates. He was even more surprised when he found out who his was.
