Chapter 2: The Night Before the Final Battle

Summary:

It's the night before the final battle between Fairy Tail and the mighty Alvarez Empire.

Tensions are high but the guild is determined to defend their home.

Notes:

This is a story that I left behind three years ago back in 2020. It's been sitting on my google drive collecting dust. I started writing it when the whole pandemic thing went down.

I actually based it off a series(won't say lol) but if you figure it out, major kudos to you!

Anyways, after all this time I was like why not post the chapters I wrote and see what the readers think.

Not sure if I'll pick it up again but that could change! I'm on break right now for three months so that gives me lots of time.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

It was the night before the grand final battle against the mighty Alvarez Empire. All of the Fairy Tail members had gathered at the guild, spending quality time with one another. The air was joyous and peaceful. It was quite a pleasant feeling. Everyone was doing their usual routine at the guild.

Natsu and Gray were fighting while Juvia affectionately cheered on her beloved. Cana drank from her large barrel of liquor and laughed. Erza sat peacefully, eating her favorite strawberry cake and Mirajane and Lisanna giggled as they watched the two boys squabble.

Happy ate some fish while sitting next to Lucy. He purred as Lucy patted his soft furry head. Lucy, herself, was discussing a new book she started reading with Levy. Gajeel sat right of her with a blank expression on his face. He tried his best to understand their conversation somewhat but failed miserably. He wasn't much of a book guy.

Wendy and Carla sat together, eating a meal, and enjoying each other’s company as they have for years now. Wendy sweatdropped as she watched Natsu and Gray fight. It was only a matter until they bumped into the wrong person.

On the other side of the hall, Laxus relaxed with his arms behind his head and legs up on the table while listening to Freed explain his upcoming battle strategy. Bicslow paid no heed to them and instead played with his magic dolls.

Elfman was ranting about what it meant to be a man while Evergreen rolled her eyes in annoyance, explaining women also existed. But right before she could go into a rant, Elfman's body was sent flying to the corner into group of members, knocking them over. They shrieked in surprise as the muscular man landed on top of them.

It didn’t long before the entire guild erupted into a full-blown free-for-all.

Chairs, tables, and even people were flung across the room in an uproar. Everybody laughed and giggled as they beat each other down, temporarily forgetting the troubles that awaited them. After what seemed like an eternity, the fighting finally died down. The losers were Natsu and Gray, who were both knocked out by Erza.

Everyone returned to their group of friends. Once again, it felt like old times. Times that happened not so long ago. Little did they know of the horrors that awaited them from this night onward.

Natsu got up and rubbed the bruise on his head where Erza had bonked him. Everyone gathered around him in hopes that he would finally tell them his ultimate plan.

“So? What is this 'secret' plan of yours?” Erza asked. Natsu’s demeanor revived itself at the mention of this. His eyes simply sparkled as he held his arm up, “Can’t tell ya! If I did, it wouldn’t be a secret anymore,” he responded gleefully.

Happy, the Blue Exceed came out of nowhere and began confidently chuckling. Panther Lily crossed his little arms as he looked at him, “It seems you're on this big secret plan."

Happy just played it off, "You could say that.”

Carla sweatdropped as she looked at the goofy blue cat, “I wouldn’t look so proud. It isn’t your secret, after all.”

Natsu confidently explained his secret plan for defeating Zeref. The group of wizards around Natsu oohed in fascination. Natsu had one chance and he to make it count.

“Natsu is our ace in the hole,” one guild member said. They all cheered for Natsu. He was their ultimate triumph card. He's the one who would be able to end the final battle and finally return peace to Fairy Tail.

Minutes later, the doors opened up, and Master Makarov and Mavis entered the guildhall. Everyone fell quiet and stared as the First and Seventh Master walk past them.

Makarov jumped onto the bar and sat down, “Gather around my children. We need to begin discussing the strategy to combat the Alvarez Empire.”

The mood went from calm and quiet to serious and tense. Lucy decided to break the silence to ask Makarov an important question.

“Master?” She asked, an anxious look on her face, “Could you tell us what you know about who we’re going to be fighting?”

His eyebrows furrowed, “Hm… I suppose I should. I will tell you the little information I know.”

He stared at all his children. They all had mixed expressions. Some looked ready to fight, others scared, a few with blank faces, but most looked uneasy but nevertheless determined to defend their town and guild.

“First, Emperor Spriggan,” he started, “He’s known in Ishgal as the greatest of black wizards, Zeref. Under his command, he has handpicked a squad of top tier wizards called the Spriggan 12. In the year I spent there, I was only able to meet six of them. It’s because the empire is vast. They are hardly ever in the same place at once.”

The room was dead silent as Makarov began listing down the Spriggan 12 members and the roles they would possibly play in the invasion.

“First, there’s The Winter General, Invel. He is Zeref’s chief of staff and administrator."

Gray sat up in his chair. He whispered 'ice' under his breath.

“As his title implies, it’s thought that he uses ice magic, but I don’t know any details.”

“Next, It’s The Desert King Ajeel. He’s the sand wizard that we faced during our escape. He likes picking fights the most out of the Spriggan 12.”

Natsu glared, remembering Ajeel nearly killed them all with ease. He’s a dangerous threat, and he had to be defeated first if they wish to gain any small advantage.

“Then third, is Brandish the Nation Destroyer. I hear she isn’t fond of battle, but apparently, she possesses enough power to make entire nations disappear.”

Erza perked up when she heard this, “We came across her once on Caracol Island. It’s my theory that she has the power to change the mass of objects.”

“Fourth is the Warrior Queen Dimaria. I never heard of any magic mentioned with her but like the warrior goddesses of legend, and she’s a female knight and a very skilled one at that.”

“She’s not a wizard, then?” Erza said as she comically stroked her chin.

“Fifth, The top-ranked Wizard Saint, God Serena. He is eccentric. His personality is considered a bit of disappointment. But all of that aside, I’m well aware of his strength.”

The room filled with murmurs. “So the number one wizard we had, ran away to join the enemy?” asked Levy in disbelief. Makarov turned to her, “He is a traitor. If you encounter him, do not hesitate because he sure won’t."

Levy gulped and nodded.

“Lastly, The Wizard King, August...He’s the one,”

Everyone noticed the change of expression on Makarov’s face to grim and fearful. He was hunched over and stared at the ground, beads of sweat rolled down his forehead.

“Even with what little I know, he’s in a whole different class. None of the others even come close to his level of power!!!”

Everything had gone silent. Makarov continued, “From what I hear, he can use every kind of magic under the sun. He may even outdo Zeref himself in that respect. And those six are the only ones we know anything about. For the rest, I only know three names. They are Bloodman, Neinhart, and Wall.”

Everyone in the room gasped, and the guild began to panic. Hearing about the might of the Alvarez Empire Army was horrifying. A few members even secretly contemplated running away.

Others were saying there was no hope. Amid the chaos, Mavis spoke up, “This is why we can’t go into this battle without a plan. So I want all of you to listen very carefully.”

“Zeref will strike with everything he has. According to all the information, I can gather, we are at no small disadvantage. This enemy is orders of magnitude stronger than any we’ve faced before.”

She stopped. All of the guild members just stared at her. But her face lit up with newfound determination and hope, “We can’t give up and run away. We have to fight our way through this with bravery and the strength of our bonds! Let’s show them how strong our guild and family are!!!!”

Even though the whole situation was terrifying, they couldn’t just abandon their beloved guild. Fairy Tail is a place full of precious moments. Yes, it had it's fair share of good and bad memories but nobody wanted Fairy Tail to disappear once more. It was a family, and you don’t leave your family behind! The guild erupted into cheers and roars of pride. It was time to for battle, and Fairy Tail rushed into preparation.

Somewhere across the ocean, Zeref stood silently on his deck of ship. Its destination heading straight to Fiore, Magnolia. Home of the infamous guild of Fairy Tail. Behind him, kneeled six of the Spriggan 12, patiently awaiting orders.

He kept his back turned but gave his speech, “We have two objectives tonight. The first objective is my top priority. To obtain the Lumine Histore located in the heart of their guild.”

 The 12 Shields nodded collectively.

"And the second objective,” Zeref said, his voice trailing off. He radiated a humongous amount of dark magical power. The aura he gave off felt like heavy pressure that was slowly crushing the Spriggan 12. He glared into the distance.

“Is the annihilation of Ishgal. Just this once, humanity must be wiped out.”

The Spriggan 12 rose to their feet and bowed, “Yes, your highness,” they said in unison. He waved them off, and each of them went to take command of their legions.

Mavis. Zeref thought, I’ll crush your pathetic guild and come for you. Fairy Heart will be mine.

Notes:

Well that was the first chapter. Not much really happened. It's meant to serve as a refresher for people who haven't read the manga or watched the anime in a while.

Second chapter will show a major turn of events that will diverge from canon.

Ok! See ya next later!

Chapter 3: Battle at Daybreak

Summary:

It's is the morning of the final battle between Fairy Tail and the Alvarez Empire. But through a shocking turn of events. The Empire leaves, declaring Fairy Tail as the victors.

Notes:

So as I reread this chapter, I noticed that I left a bunch of characters out from both sides. That's mainly because I didn't want to bore the readers with every single person's reactions. They all pretty much had the same idea. The Spriggan 12 were angry/or confused as hell when they retreated and Fairy Tail and the other guilds celebrated. It would simply have been too much for just the prologue chapter meant to set up future events.

Also, I don't remember the series at all :( I may have to skim the final season again to refresh my brain on all the names of the spells, characters' names, monikers, etc. But I don't know yet lul

Chapter Text

It's finally daybreak as Natsu and his fellow teammates once more engage the forces of the Alvarez Empire.

Emperor Zeref sends his Spriggan 12 generals to deal with the threats below.

Fairy Tail and their allies fight bravely and manage to defeat the ghosts of Bloodman, God Serena, and Wall Eehto.

The Spriggan 12 member known as Irene Belserion abandons her assignment of extracting the Fairy Heart from Mavis's body when a ghost of her past finally catches up to her.

This allows Mavis Vermillion and Cana Alberona to sneak into the basement to free the guild's founder's body from her crystal cocoon.

The battle rages on and Zeref is slowly beginning to realize his forces are being pushed back.

Each Spriggan Twelve member engages in battle with Fairy Tail and their allies and one by one they are defeated.

Zeref clenched his fist as he watched the battle from afar. How was it possible that a bunch of weaklings were holding their own against his elite army?

What power could they possibly possess to display such resilience and determination?

It’s too late, he had miscalculated this entire battle and his army is suffering because of his mistakes.

Behind Zeref, Invel knelt, badly injured from his battle against Gray Fullbuster. His body trembled when he felt Zeref's murderous aura.

"Invel," said Zeref calmly. The Winter General stood up, quietly wincing in pain as he bowed.

"Yes, your Majesty?"

"Order a retreat. We're done here," scowled Zeref, turning around with the flick of his robes and returning to his command ship.

"Y-your Majesty?! Retreat?! But we have yet to lose! We still have August and Irene! We can still-"

"Do as I say, Invel. Do not make me repeat myself. "

Invel's blood ran ice cold, he stood in place as he watched his Emperor leave.

His mouth hung open in shock. There was no way in hell they had been beaten!

He brought his shaking hand to his head, using Telekinesis Magic, he relayed the message to all Imperial Troops.

"Attention all units! By command of the Emperor, you are hereby ordered to retreat!"

Irene's eyes widened when she heard Invel's message.

‘What the hell?! Retreat?! What in the world is that foolish boy thinking?!’

Erza and Wendy stared at Irene who had gone still.

"Erza?" whispered Wendy, "What's wrong with her?"

The young swordswoman shook her head and got in a defensive stance. "I don't know but be ready for another attack."

Wendy nodded and positioned herself, looking over at Irene who hadn't moved an inch.

Irene's eyes darted over to Erza and she let out an annoyed click of her tongue before composing herself.

"Looks like playtime is over, Erza. Your mother has to go now,” Irene said with a false tone of sweetness.

Before Erza could respond, Irene jumped into the air and disappeared from sight. The two guild members stayed quiet, both confused about what had transpired.

All around the warped landscape of Fiore, Alvarez troops rushed to their airships and boats.

The remaining Spriggan 12, frustrated and bitter, returned to their battalions and fled.

The people of Fiore watched in awe as the Alvarez Empire slowly disappeared over the ocean's horizon.

They had done it! They won!

In a collective victorious hurrah, the citizens of Fiore chanted and cheered over their victory! Their joyful roars could be heard across the entire continent.

The moment Lucy saw Natsu and Happy, she embraced the two in a tight hug. Tears of happiness streamed down her soft cheeks.

"We won! Natsu! We won!" cried Lucy.

Natsu grinned and held up a peace sign, "Yep! We sent those guys running!"

"Aye, sir!"

Fried and the Raijin Tribe tended to Laxus's wounds. The group celebrated as he merely grinned. He leaned back against a wooden crate.

He looked over the broken remains of the Machias, Wall Eehto. His metallic body parts scattered pathetically on the ground.

Laxus had defeated the machine and rid himself of his illness. It couldn't have gone any better in his own opinion.

“Gray-sama?!” squeaked Juvia as the Ice Make Wizard wrapped his arms around her, refusing to let go,

“Juvia,” Gray whispered into her ear, “Please don’t ever leave me again.”

Juvia’s eyes filled with tears as she nodded and returned the tight hug, burying her face into his neck.

“I promise I won’t.”

Wendy hugged Erza's waist, tightly squeezing her.

"We won, Erza! We defended our home!"

Erza chuckled and patted the young girl's head, "Yes, we did."

Though something kept gnawing at the back of Erza's head. It seemed to tell her it wasn't over yet. But she chose to ignore it, deciding it's best to bask in the glory of their hard-earned victory.

It took only a short amount of time until the guilds of Fiore met up at Magnolia to celebrate. In such a short time, food and alcohol had been served.

Friends rejoiced and cried after reuniting with each other. Of course, there were many losses but they would wait until after the festivities to allow those to properly mourn their fallen friends.

Back at the guildhall, Mavis sat in the fetal position next to Master Makarov. The only noise made was the soft sipping of the old man drinking from his mug.

When Warren announced Alvarez's retreat to the entire guild, Cana and Mavis were lost for words. Their desperate attempt to free Mavis's body was halted as they stared at each with relieved tears of joy. The Fairy Heart remained safe within the crystalized Mavis.

"I can't believe it. We won," said Mavis softly, looking down at her feet. It just seemed so unreal to her that Alvarez would simply retreat. In all her calculations, never did she factor in victory by forfeit. Makarov merely grunted as he drank.

The door guild opened and Elfman and Mirajane came in with huge smiles on their faces.

"Sorry, Masters! Just came for some more barrels!" bellowed Elfman while Mirajane giggled.

Makarov and Mavis smiled, "Of course. Help yourself," chuckled the old man.

Mirajane and Elfman emerged from the basement a bit later with an impressive amount of alcohol.

"Are you going to join us? We're all waiting for you," grinned Mirajane, looking at the two.

"Yes, in a bit. Master Mavis and I are just having a little discussion."

The siblings nodded and left the two alone. As soon as the door shut, Mavis and Makarov's smiles faded.

"It seems you’re having the same train of thought as me, First Master."

Mavis stayed quiet and Makarov gave a solemn frown.

"We should tell them-" Mavis started but was quickly interrupted by Makarov.

"For now, let the children rest and celebrate. They deserve it after all."

"Yes… You're right…"

During the party, the ground glowed bright red, causing a great deal of panic.

In a bright flash of blood red, the Universe One spell was dispersed, returning Fiore to its original state .

But this didn't stop the party as many of the guilds and towns continued with their celebrations late into the afternoon and night.

Zeref's Palace

Several hours have passed since the battle against Fiore had come to an end. Resulting in the humiliating defeat for the Alvarez Empire.

The surviving Twelve sat silently in their chairs, waiting for his Majesty to arrive. Nobody spoke, opting for total silence.

Irene tapped her long nails impatiently against the beautiful wooden table. She donned an irritated scowl. It's been nearly two hours since they've been called and Zeref had yet to show up.

Just how long was that boy going to sulk? If he hadn't ordered a retreat, then they would have won by now and been celebrating their victory.

August couldn't wrap his head against his Emperor's order. Had they failed that miserably? Had he failed his father? He gripped his staff tightly, frustrated he had disappointed his Majesty.

Brandish on the other hand was feeling nervous and frightened. She committed many acts during the battle of Fiore that would be construed as treason. She tried her best to remain calm and not appear guilty in the presence of the others.

The doors of the meeting hall opened and the man known as Zeref walked in. They loudly slammed shut behind him.

The Twelve stood up and bowed to their leader who in turn chose to ignore them and took his place at the head of the table. Nobody moved, remaining in their bowing position.

Zeref let out a sigh, "Well, aren't you going to sit?"

They looked at each other warily before taking their seats.

Zeref leaned back in his chair, using the armrest to rest his chin with his hand.

"As you know, today our great nation suffered a crushing defeat. Many brave warriors lost their lives in the pursuit of my goals."

The air filled with an uncomfortable silence. Many of the Spriggan 12 refused to look Zeref in the face. Except for Irene and Larcade, who remained unbothered.

Irene chose first to air her grievances, "Yes, it's quite a shame that they died but if you hadn't ordered a retreat, we could have crushed Fairy Tail and claimed victory," Irene said with exasperation.

Irene's tone was not lost on Zeref who in turn glared. "Oh, I suppose you're also angry I ordered you to stop the Fairy Heart extraction? Or did you perhaps think it was better to abandon your task and deal with your own problems instead?"

Irene's face fell, her confidence shattered. She turned her face away in shame.

The other Twelve held their breaths, hoping they weren’t next to draw the Emperor's ire.

"Ajeel and Brandish," snapped Zeref. The two members sat at attention, both looking ahead nervously.

"Explain your actions, Brandish," demanded Zeref, "Why didn't you shrink the town when you arrived?"

The young woman stuttered and mumbled as she failed to come up with a satisfactory response.

"I'm sorry, your Majesty. I cannot explain why," apologized Brandish as she hung her head in disgrace.

Zeref scoffed and turned to face Ajeel, "What about you?"

Ajeel scowled and slammed his fist on the table, "I was caught off guard by those bastards! I didn't get a chance to bomb the city since they had a Magic Cannon!"

Zeref clicked his tongue and shook his head in disappointment. "Nothing but excuses. You have all failed me."

Many of the members gulped, their eyes wide with fear.

"Nevertheless, it was also my fault," said Zeref nonchalantly as he let out a sigh.

"What do you mean, my Lord?" asked August.

"What I mean is I underestimated Fairy Tail. While they are a small guild, they have a strong bond unlike any other. They were able to rally their comrades and push us back. A factor which I didn't wager on."

Invel cleared his throat and raised his hand, "Then what is our next step, your Highness?"

Zeref crossed his legs, "For now, we will do nothing. As we are now, we don't stand a chance against Fairy Tail."

This decision didn't sit well with the Spriggan 12. Many of whom ached for revenge and redemption. But all chose to keep their grievances to themselves.

"For now, go and rest. I will call you when needed."

"Yes, your Majesty!" saluted The Twelve as they stood up and made their way to the door, leaving Zeref to his own vices.

"Irene," called out Zeref. Irene bit her tongue in irritation. She just wanted to forget this entire day already. Irene turned to face Zeref.

"I have a mission for you. You will meet me here tomorrow morning."

Irene's fingers twitched but chose to save face and bowed reluctantly before exiting the room.

"Mavis," whispered Zeref to himself, "I wonder what you're doing now."

One week later!

A Royal Banquet was thrown in honor of Fairy Tail's victory over the Empire's defeat. The guild along with their guests spent the evening chatting away and eating delicious food. They had reverted to their usual shenanigans. The battle already fading from their memories.

Per Mavis's instructions, Makarov asked the young Queen for a private audience along with the Chief of the Cherry Blossom Holy Knights.

Her Majesty, Queen Hisui E. Fiore led Makarov into the empty throne room. She took her place on the throne. Her loyal knight, Arcadios, stood proudly next his queen.

In the background, the muffled sounds of the music and laughing could be heard.

Mavis stood next to Makarov, though only those in Fairy Tail could see her.

The older man lowered his head in respect, thanking the Queen for accepting his request to which she waved her hand airly, instead expressing her gratitude.

"Makarov Dreyar! First off, I want to personally thank you. If it weren't for your valiant efforts, we would have been overrun by the enemy."

Makarov bowed yet did not smile, "Of course, your Highness."

Hisui giggled, "Please, Master Makarov! I should be bowing to you! If it wasn't for Fairy Tail, it wouldn't have been possible to achieve victory."

"Victory you say?" said Makarov with a solemn tone. Hisui frowned, confused at the sudden shift in his mood.

"Not victory, your Highness."

For the next twenty minutes, Makarov relayed painstaking detail of Mavis's encounter with Zeref from four days ago.

“Emperor?! That girl! She’s here!” said Irene, greatly surprised. She raised her staff to capture Mavis but Zeref raised his hand halting her.

“So Mavis, you've come to see me. I presume to ask what I’m up to?”

“Yes, Zeref. What treachery are you planning? I know you wouldn’t give up so easily.”

Zeref can not see, hear, nor feel Mavis's presence but he could accurately predict how she would respond. He had memorized the personality of the woman he had fallen deeply in love with all those years ago.

“You have beaten my army once. But I assure you, it will not happen again.”

Mavis growled and shook her head defiantly, “You’re wrong, Zeref. For as long as you threaten our guild and family, you’ll never beat us!”

“That may be true, but everyone has their limits.”

Mavis said nothing instead glaring at the smirking man.

“Soon, we will play a new game. Worry not, I intend to slowly but surely take all your board pieces until only you are left standing, Mavis.”

Mavis narrowed her eyes, “I accept, Zeref. I hope you’re prepared to lose."

Zeref chuckled darkly, “I always admired your stubborness. So much confidence. Let's hope it's not misplaced.”

...

“She’s gone,” said Irene who had stayed silent during the two’s exchange.

“Oh well. It doesn’t matter,” said Zeref in a bored tone. He had more important matters that needed tending to.

“Irene, I will brief you on your assignment. You have one week to complete your task and return. You will be needed in the coming days.”

“Yes, your Highness. I will not fail you.”

“I hope. For your sake.”

The details of Zeref’s mission shocked even Irene. She couldn’t believe the words he was speaking. It was an impossible task. Even with the shocking revelation, Zeref was essentially wagering her life.

But Zeref is convinced that even the ‘Black Dragon’ Acnologia couldn’t resist this offer. After all, he vowed to destroy all dragons from the face of Earthland. This deal would be irresistible to him.

When Makarov finished, Hisui and Arcadios had looks of pure terror and panic.

"A shroud of darkness will soon cover this land. Begun, the Fairy War has."

Notes:

That was the prologue folks. What did you think? Was it unclear? Poorly written? Let me know what you thought.

The next chapter is the first real chapter of this fanfic. I hope you all enjoy it.

Also, to be honest, rereading all my old notes, I kinda want to start writing this story again. I just had so much fun back then coming up with all the crazy ideas.

Alright, see you next time!

Chapter 4: Safe Spot

Summary:

It's been a month since Fairy Tail's victory against the treacherous Alvarez Empire. All appears to be well but those who look closely behind the shiny exterior realize it's not.

Notes:

Hey! Here's the third chapter of four I've written! As I read these chapters, I find myself laughing quite often lol. I don't know why!

I think when I wrote this chapter, I was trying to keep a sort of façade between the characters. I don't remember what I was entirely aiming for.

This is the second to last chapter before I wrap this up.

Hope you enjoy!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

"Natsu, please! stop! You're hurting me!"

"You traitor!"

"Natsu, you bastard! I KILL YOU!"

Lucy rapidly jolted awake, breathing heavily, her body covered in a cold sweat. She clutched her chest as she tried to regain her breath. Each breath of oxygen she took made her lungs ache, making Lucy dizzy as a result.

My nightmares…They were getting worse…

Lucy remained in bed, silently staring down at her blanket.

Those dreams, Lucy thought, They never stop. Every night, they come back to haunt me. I wish they would just stop!

Looking out her window, Lucy felt a wave of tranquility at the sight of sun rising. The warm morning light felt wonderful on her skin. It marked the beginning of a new day, and a new adventure! The screams from her nightmares quickly begin to fade from her memory, as they always did each morning.

Opening the window, she felt the gentle breeze of early morning wind blow through her hair. Lucy could tell it was going to be a beautiful day! Rising from bed, Lucy headed to the bathroom to start her morning routine.

After showering, brushing her teeth, drying her hair, and putting on some comfy clothes, she went into the kitchen to prepare some breakfast.

Lucy felt like spoiling herself so she decided make sweet fried toast with a bowl of freshly diced fruit! Her mouth watered as she imagined taking a bite of the toast dipped in savory-sweet maple syrup topped with a juicy ripe strawberry.

But unfortunately for Lucy, breakfast would have to wait because it appears her entire kitchen has been ransacked. Cabinets laid open and food wrappers littered the floor. The culprits in question slept soundly, surrounded by a ring of trash. Both had trails of saliva leaking from their mouths as they snored loudly.

Lucy grumbled furiously as she poked Natsu's head with the tip of her slipper. He didn't awaken, instead latching onto her leg tightly.

"H-hey! Natsu! Let me go!" blushed Lucy as she tried her best to maintain her balance, her yelps awakening Happy and Natsu.

Natsu slowly opened his eyes and yawned, giving Lucy a soft wink, “Morning, Lucy!”

Happy bid Lucy a good morning too and flew into her arms, snuggling with her. Lucy patted the little cat’s head while tapping her foot. It was clear to the both of them, Lucy was demanding an explanation for her messy kitchen.

“Sorry, Luce. We were just so hungry last night and everything was closed."

"So you broke in again and ate all my food?!”

Lucy felt Happy wince but she gave the little Exceed a tender hug. Natsu awkwardly shrugged his shoulders. Lucy was more annoyed than angry but she decided to cut the two a break. She shook her head and softly laughed, "It's okay. But please knock next time."

"Aye, sir!" yelled Natsu and Happy in unison causing Lucy to laugh out loud.

Since Lucy hasn't eaten breakfast yet, Natsu decided to treat her to the 8-Island (Magnolia Branch) restaurant that was owned by their guild's longest and biggest supporter, Yajima. An old man who retired from his position as one of the Ten Wizard Saints.

But first, they had to help Lucy clean up the mess they both created. It took an hour to finish cleaning and then Natsu and Happy had to wait an additional twenty minutes for Lucy to dressed for the day. After putting on a cute outfit and packing her purse with her Celestial Keys, the three left the apartment and straight to the restaurant.

At the restaurant, Lucy ordered a plate of waffles and a cup of coffee while Natsu and Happy seemingly ordered the entire menu. After many years, Lucy was no longer surprised about how much food those two could stuff away in those bottomless pits they called stomachs.

The trio laughed and chatted away during their delicious breakfast. With Happy and Natsu ordering a second time, much to the dismay of the workers. The check amounted to a total of 40,000 jewels which Natsu easily paid off by dumping a heavy sack of Jewels onto the table.

The three went straight to the guild to meet up with everyone for their new mission. They opened the door and were met with the sight of the same old guild antics.

Elfman was boasting about being a man with Evergreen rolling her eyes. In the background, Fried chatted with Laxus excitedly about his new defensive rune spell. Bickslow played with his dolls, paying attention to neither. The old men, Macao and Wakaba, were complaining about the younger generation while drinking. Gajeel and Levy were sitting together with Levy reading her book to Gajeel who in turn seemed more into interested in admiring Levy's beauty than the contents of the book. Cana was drinking from her barrel of alcohol while playing with her cards. It was business as usual at the Fairy Tail guild!

"Good Morning!" said Mirajane with a kind smile. Happy and Natsu waved hello before rushing past her to join Erza, Wendy, and Carla at their table.

"Morning, Mira!" greeted Lucy as she took a seat at the bar counter.

Mirajane asked Lucy if she'd like some breakfast to which the blonde woman politely declined, explaining Natsu had taken her out for breakfast after sleeping over at her house.

Hearing this bit of juicy gossip made Mirajane's mouth twist into a wide smirk. She leaned on the counter with her head resting on her hand.

"Oh my!" growled Mirajane sultry, "Natsu took you out to eat after spending the night. What a gentleman!"

Lucy raised her eyebrow in confusion. Why was Mirajane acting so cheeky? Lucy slowly pieced the puzzle together. What she just said could so easily be misconstrued by one with a perverted mind.

"No, it's not like that!" squealed Lucy in embarrassment, her cheeks flushing, "I meant he slept on the kitchen floor after breaking in! Nothing weird happened!"

Mirajane broke into a fit of giggles and patted the poor girl's head.

"W-where is Master Makarov and Master Mavis?!" asked Lucy nervously, hoping to steer the conversation in a different direction.

Mirajane frowned, looking over at Master Makarov's spot that's been repeatedly empty for the past couple of weeks.

Ever since the Invasion by the Alvarez Empire, Master Makarov, and First Master Mavis had been going off on secret trips, entrusting Mirajane to handle the day-to-day operations of Fairy Tail in their absence.

Whenever she asked about their absences, the two would quickly brush off her questions by explaining it was merely Guild Master meetings and no real cause for concern. But Mirajane, having known Makarov since childhood, knew there was more than the two were letting on. But she didn't bother prying any further into the situation. If they didn’t want to disclose any information then that was on them.

"I'm not entirely sure, Lucy. But I'm sure they're fine," lied Mirajane with a faux reassuring smile.

"I suppose," shrugged Lucy, "Thanks for chatting with me, Mira! I have to go now, we're going on a quest today!"

Mirajane nodded and said farewell to Lucy and returned to her duties.

Lucy joined up with her group while Erza was in the middle of explaining the quest. As per usual, Natsu and Happy were fooling around and Juvia kept ogling Gray, who was trying his best to concentrate, despite the loud ruckus. Wendy laughed, finding everyone's antics funny while Carla tried her best to act as the mature one, despite her smirk.

Lucy snickered and tried to focus on the meeting. Though her mind became preoccupied with anxiety.

If Lucy was being honest, ever since the invasion, she's been having a hard time sleeping. That battle had truly been a terrifying experience for everyone. So much destruction and chaos had been brought about by the Alvarez Empire.

She honestly believed they were going to die. Not that Lucy was afraid of death, since it was a natural part of life. But more in the sense, she would dearly miss moments like these. Moments where it's all of her friends having an amazing time and going on adventures. Exploring the vast open world and meeting different people every day! But what if they had lost one of their best friends during the battle? Would their days as comrades come to a miserable end?

Lucy hadn't shared these troubling thoughts with anyone else in the guild. In fact, it seems like everyone in Fairy Tail collectively wants to forget the battle and move on with their lives. And Lucy couldn't blame them either for she wished the same.

That's why Lucy had to cherish these moments here and now. With her friends…her family…Because nobody knows what the future holds in store. Lucy shook her head, shaking away those depressing ideas. Erza finished reviewing the plan and the group got up for the exit.

They waved goodbye to everyone with many of their fellow mages wishing them good luck on their quest. They rented a Magic Vehicle with Erza being assigned as the designated driver. The group drove to Hargeon Port for their new exciting quest:

Help the owner on the opening day of their brand-new maid café!

Royal Castle

Crocus, Fiore

15:00

Makarov nodded in agreement as Captain Arcadios pointed to the specific areas on a map of Fiore, pointing out many possible locations where the Alvarez Empire is bound to strike first. In the background, strategists and officers ran around shuffling through boxes of maps to hand to their captain.

"So what you're saying is that Alvarez will have a diversion in the North while sending their main force down South to Magnolia?"

Makarov acknowledged this, "Yes, Captain, just like last time. We have no reason to believe they wouldn't repeat the same strategy."

Mavis, invisible to all but Makarov, studied the maps. Using her fingers to trace the layout of the land. Fiore had quite an array of steep mountains which could provide an interesting advantage for Fiore. Alvarez's main mode of transportation consisted of Cruiser Battleships which could be configured for land and sea use. Setting up Anti-Air Jupiter Cannons along the coastlines of Fiore would be crucial. Mavis made sure to inform Makarov who in turn relayed the message to Acardios and Queen Hisui.

Queen Hisui, who had been quietly observing the meeting, brought up the topic of safety and security in towns within Fiore.

"Squadrons will be stationed at every key town. Smaller low-priority areas will be advised to seek refuge in sanctuary towns."

"Pardon me, Master Makarov, your Highness, but such a large operation will take weeks to accomplish. Mobilizing such a large army at sudden notice-"

"But it must be done," said Makarov grimly. "We do not know when Alvarez will attack again."

Hisui and Acardios glanced at one another, both looking anxious but carrying on with their conference. They had to prepare as much as possible. Who knows when Zeref wills strike again.

"Damn! I'm exhausted!" sighed Lucy as she stretched her sore aching arms. She walked out of the maid café with the others following closely behind.

"You said it," groaned Natsu, rubbing his shoulders. The café was an overwhelming success! All day, the place had been packed full of people with many others waiting in line.

Though that doesn't mean it went without a hitch. A couple of incidents arose when Gray had to hold back Natsu when some customers flirted with Lucy. Or when Gray accidentally froze a woman who had asked him if he could chill her coffee.

But despite the troubles, the owner graciously thanked them. Calling the Fairy Tail mages, 'the best employees', he ever had the pleasure of working with.

With everybody getting their cut of the reward money, they were ready to go home. Gray and Juvia decided to stay at an inn in Hargeon, stating they were too worn out to travel.

With everyone making up their minds, the rest of the group said goodbye to the couple. Erza returned the rental car when they had arrived in Hargeon so they went back to the shop to rent another for the journey home. Unfortunately, Hargeon's Magical Vehicles Rental were currently sold out so they would have to ride by horse carriage.

Not having any other choice, they rented the carriage. Wendy and Carla dozed off instantly, minutes into the ride with Happy on the verge of passing out. His eyes kept dropping while trying his best to remain awake.

Lucy glanced down at Happy and softly stroked his head, "You can go to sleep. I'll make sure to wake you when we arrive."

"Ok, Lucy," yawned Happy, rubbing his eyes before curling into a ball on her lap.

Lucy smiled and took a quick look at Natsu who was busy gazing up at the starry night sky.

Lucy felt her heart pound. Natsu looked so immersed in the sky, his head resting on his hand. It was such a rare moment to witness him calm and quiet.

"What's up? Is something wrong?" asked Natsu, breaking Lucy out of her train of thought.

"Huh?" grunted Lucy, mentally facepalming herself for responding like such a dummy.

"It's just you keep looking at me. Is there something on my face?" asked Natsu as he leaned in close to Lucy. Their faces mere inches apart.

Lucy couldn’t help but become aware of how soft and pink Natsu's lips looked. Those dark eyes of his sent shivers up her spine. Lucy wanted to kiss him…

Lucy blushed heavily and waved her hand airily, pushing down such inappropriate fantasies. Natsu was her best friend! Besides, Lucy didn’t have romantic feelings for Natsu! Well at least that's what she told herself.

"No, of course not! Sorry, I didn't mean to stare!" squeaked Lucy, looking in the other direction to avoid Natsu's unwavering gaze. Natsu ultimately shrugged and resumed staring out the window.

In the driver's seat, Erza smirked to herself, having found the whole ordeal quite adorable.

It's midnight when the group finally arrives in Magnolia. Their first stop is Lucy's house, where Lucy, Natsu, and Happy get off.

"We're gonna walk home from here, Erza," said Natsu, carrying a sleeping Happy in his arms.

"Ok, well I'm gonna go drop off Wendy and Carla and then leave the carriage by the train station."

They bid each other goodnight and Erza rode down the street till she turned right, disappearing from view.

"It's pretty late so I guess Happy and I should get going. See ya tomorrow, Luce!" grinned Natsu, waving goodbye.

"Wait!" chirped Lucy, slightly reaching out to grab Natsu before retracting her hand. Lucy blushed as she twiddled her thumbs and stared down at her feet.

"D-do you want to sleep over? I-I mean it's late, Happy is tired, and your home is far. But if you don't want to it's totally fine-"

Natsu laughed out loud and pumped his fist.

"Sure! Sleepover!" shouted Natsu excitedly, making Lucy beam brightly.

Natsu's excitement woke Happy. The little blue Exceed asked about the commotion, to which Natsu eagerly explained they were sleeping over at Lucy's house.

Happy bounced from Natsu's arms, flying into Lucy, nuzzling against her.

"It's a good thing I brought some spare clothes too!" exclaimed Natsu, tapping his adventurer's bag.

Lucy nodded, "Yep, you can take a bath after me. There’s nothing better going to bed fresh and clean!”

Happy zoomed into the kitchen as soon as she unlocked the door to her apartment. She giggled when Natsu ran to her living room and jumped onto the sofa, letting out a huge content groan as he let the soft cushions ease his sore muscles.

“I’m jealous, Lucy. I wish we had a couch this comfy back at our house. The one we have is old and broken."

“Hehe, that’s because you broke it when we were wrestling!” laughed Happy.

Lucy heart warmed as she listened to Natsu and Happy’s banter. The two shared many great memories from their childhood. She left them to reminisce as she went into her room to grab some clothes for her bath.

When she returned Happy, flew up to her and plopped his tiny body on top of her head.

“Lucy!” whined the little cat, “I’m hungry! Do you have any yummy fish?”

Even though Natsu and Happy had raided her kitchen this morning, it seems they had left the freezer untouched. Lucy had picked up the habit of buying fresh fish for Happy since they would frequently visit her home. She didn’t mind because Happy always thanked her for the snacks by cuddling with her.

“Yes, I do actually,” replied Lucy in a matter of fact tone, “I keep a pack of frozen fish in the freezer. Check there.”

“Aye, Sir!”

Happy zipped to the freezer and opened it, rummaging through packets of frozen vegetables and meats. He cheered when he pulled out a packet of fish.

“Thanks, Lucy!”

She flashed him a wink and thumbs up.

“Oi, Lucy,” Natsu said, calling for her attention, “Can you keep an eye on Happy? I’m gonna run home and pick up a few things if you don’t mind.”

Lucy frowned, not because of what the favor he was asking her but because the trip would take at least twenty minutes.

Natsu seemed to have read her mind so dispelled her fears, assuring her, he wouldn’t take long. Lucy reluctantly agreed though she couldn’t help but nervously sweat as Natsu flung himself out her window. He waved back at her with his contagious smile, slowly shrinking the further he went.

Turning around, Lucy noticed Happy had already devoured his fish. Since they were all going to shower, Lucy figured they could save time if Happy took a bath with her.

“Happy, want to take a bath? That way, you don’t have to wait for Natsu.”

Happy accepted, and the two stepped into the bathroom. Lucy was the first to enter the tub. Happy cannonballing in second, splashing water and soap everywhere. While it was funny, Lucy had to remind him not to make too much of a mess. After they finished bathing, they drained the water and proceeded to dry themselves. Lucy, having changed into her pajamas, used her blow dryer to dry off Happy. The cat couldn’t help but giggle, explaining the air tickled him.

By the time they finished, half an hour had gone by but Natsu still hadn’t returned which made Lucy worry.

She watched the street from her window while Happy chose a spot on her bed. “Goodnight, Lucy,” yawned Happy, curling into a ball under her blanket. Lucy smiled and leaned over to plant a kiss on his forehead. Happy’s eyes snapped open.

“Why did you kiss me Lucy?” he whispered, genuinely baffled. Lucy shrugged her shoulders, “It’s something my mama used to do when she tucked me into bed. She said it helped give me sweet dreams.”

Lucy flinched when Happy started sniffling. She saw the pools of tears gathering in his eyes, his tiny body shaking. Lucy panicked, realizing she could have possibly offended him so she rushed to apologize but Happy shook his head. He leapt from under the covers and into her embrace. He sobbed loudly, clutching Lucy tightly.

“I’m scared! I keep having nightmares of you and Natsu dying! I don’t want you to die!” wailed Happy, digging his claws into her sides

Lucy was taken aback by Happy’s breakdown, instinctually, she cradled the little cat, soothing his back.

“Shh, it’s okay, Happy. Natsu and I are still here. We're not going anywhere for a long time,” Lucy cooed, gently pressing Happy to her chest. He looked up at her and noticed that Lucy had tears flowing.

“Lucy, you’re crying too,” choked Happy. Lucy touched her cheeks and felt the warm wetness. She was crying? Why? She didn’t even feel sad so why was she crying?

It seems all of Lucy’s fears and doubts from the past month began to seep out. She bit her tongue, trying to quench the urge to cry. Her lips quivered but gradually the tears flowed as Lucy began to sob.

Together Lucy and Happy wept, clinging to each other and letting out their sorrows.

Ten minutes later

The two had fallen asleep, both holding onto each other tightly. Letting out pent up emotions did them wonders. For the first time in a month, the two were finally able to get a great night’s rest. For once, they weren't plagued with nightmares of death and destruction. Just peaceful dreams of friendship and love.

Natsu whistled a tune as he made his way back to Lucy’s house. His trip home was quick. He rummaged through the giant mess packing his and Happy’s essentials in a spare bag.

Though now Natsu was taking his sweet time. The beautiful night stars twinkled, the cool evening breeze felt delightful and he couldn’t help but walk slowly to admire the sky.

Currently, he was trudging along Magnolia's main roads. He passed Fairy Hills, the building where most of the guild’s female mages lived. Natsu wondered if Erza, Wendy, and Carla had made it home safely.

He continued his night stroll, not paying much attention to his surroundings. His body acted on its own with no real goal besides reaching Lucy's house.

Before long, he reached South Gate Park. A park filled with lots of memories from his life. Some were sad while others were joyful.

He scratched his head wondering what was up with him today. For some reason, Natsu felt out of it. He didn’t feel like himself and if he was being honest, many of his friends were acting the same. It’s been that way since his 'older brother', Zeref, and his army invaded Magnolia with intention of stealing the 'Fairy Heart' Lumine Histore.

It’s been nearly a month with zero news about Alvarez. At least according to Master Makarov and First Master Mavis.

Natsu, preoccupied with his thoughts, bumped into a light pole with a loud metallic thud. The impact didn’t even faze him.

"Woah! Are you okay?!" cried out a woman's voice.

Sitting at one of the park benches was an eerily familiar redheaded woman.

"Erza?" called out Natsu, finding it unbelievable he had run into Erza.

"Natsu?" asked Erza in bewilderment when she heard his voice. Natsu out at this late hour? She was under the impression he had already gone home.

"What are you doing?" asked Natsu, plopping down next to her. Erza let out a heavy sigh and leaned back, crossing her legs, "I couldn't sleep so I came to stargaze. What about you?"

"I went home to pick up a couple of things for me and Happy. We chose to stay over at Lucy's house."

"Oh, that's nice."

Neither said anything else, both of them choosing to silently admire the stars. Minutes, but what felt like hours, passed before Erza spoke first. Erza had finally mustered up the courage speak her mind about an issue that’s been haunting her since that day.

"My mother is alive," said Erza, frowning heavily.

Natsu's eyes widened but he didn't respond, letting Erza vent. She explained the events that unfolded during her duel with Spriggan 12 woman. Finding out Irene is the inventor of Dragon Slayer magic and the ‘Mother of Dragon Slayers'.  Not to mention her mother causally explaining how she abandoned infant Erza after deeming her worthless.

"It's weird, isn't it? How connected we are with the people of the Alvarez Empire," laughed Erza shakily, the woman trembled in her seat.

Natsu couldn't agree more. Zeref is his older brother and the Emperor. The man responsible for the attack against his guild. Erza's mother was the strongest enchantress in Alvarez. Mavis is Zeref's former lover. It's comparable to messy cobweb hastily connecting everyone.

Erza gasped when Natsu leaned against her, placing a gentle hand on her back and resting his head on her shoulder.

"It's okay, Erza. No matter what comes our way, we will protect our family. And I’ll protect you.”

His words of encouragement and kindness cheered up Erza because she let out a soft chuckle.

"You're right. Thank you."

Natsu smiled, looking at the time, he's only been gone for an hour. He's sure Lucy would understand when he explained the situation to her. Of course, he’d leave out Ezra’s confession. It’s up to her if she wishes to disclose it to her other friends. Natsu kept Erza company for a bit longer.

The two chatted about their early adventures as children, laughing at each other's most embarrassing childhood moments.

It was just the two of them living in moment. A brother and sister, not through blood, but through their strong bonds of friendship.

Lucy stirred from her sleep awakening to the bright moonlight gleaming through her window, illuminating her dark house.

She glanced down to find a sleeping Happy cuddling next to her. She smiled and gently rose from her bed to avoid waking Happy.

Lucy's throat felt parched so she went to the kitchen for a cup of cool water.

Lucy panicked, forgetting she had yet write in her diary!

She tiptoed into her room, grabbing her diary and pen before returning to the kitchen and sitting at the table.

She flipped open a book and turned to a blank page.

Dear, Mama and Papa,

I just got back from doing a quest with everyone! It was super fun working at a maid café! I got to wear a cute uniform and I made enough to pay rent for the next three months!

It's been a long month for all of us at Fairy Tail. Ever since that battle. Everyone seems to be a bit distant. I understand though because I am the same.

I've been having nightmares every night but I always forget about them within minutes after waking up in the morning.

I can't help but wonder if they mean anything...

Anyways, I have such a funny story about the café! A customer asked Gray if he cool her drink and he-

BOOOOOOOM!!!!

The last thing Lucy Heartfilia heard was the ear-shattering explosion behind her before falling into total darkness…

Chapter 5: Tinder

Summary:

The Alvarez Empire catches Fiore off guard, and Fiore pays dearly...

Notes:

Hey everyone! Here's the final chapter of this story. It took me a long time to update because I was a mixture of busy and lazy to copy and paste a document lol. Anyways, as I read all four chapters, I noticed I left out a lot to be desired. If I was currently writing this, I would have added more details and introduced more plot points that would help flesh out the world settings. But even if I did write, It would still be awful because I can't write for shit lmao. My writing has not improved one bit.

Anyways, hope you enjoy!

Chapter Text

Crocus

Royal Castle

03:00

Makarov yawned heavily as he readied himself for bed. It's been over two hours since the leaders of the Royal Military concluded their meeting.

At Queen Hisui's insistence, he would spend the night in the Royal guest chambers. It was late into the night, and the sun would rise in a couple of hours but Makarov opted to remain awake for a bit longer and organize his notes until the effects of a long tiring day caught up to him.

Makarov slipped off his shoes and laid back on the soft fluffy pillow. He groaned as his body sank into the mellow foam mattress, letting it comfort his old joints. Mavis, sitting on the window sill, giggled at the old man's grunts.

"Forgive me, First Master, for my undignified noises. But it's a wonderful bed," Makarov said cheekily. Mavis shook her head assuring him she meant no disrespect.

"Goodnight, First Master."

Mavis smiled, "Goodnight, Makarov," and in seconds, the old man had quickly fallen asleep, letting out soft quiet snores.

Mavis returned to her view of the city. The city's lights illuminated the night sky, giving Crocus a faint beautiful yellow glow.

Minutes passed and Mavis frowned as her mind wandered to Zeref and his Empire. It pained her to think the soft-spoken man she met all those years ago had turned into a deranged monster. But perhaps Mavis greatly misjudged Zeref. Was it possible her love for him blinded her from the ugly truth?

Mavis knew Zeref was not a sane person. His four hundred years of isolation had driven him completely mad. The Curse of Ankhseram had steered him to a life of emotional detachment from all humans. In Zeref’s point of view, humans were merely pieces that could be moved on a board game.

Yet deep down, her heart still yearned for him…

Mavis clutched her chest and clenched her eyes tightly. What is wrong with me? Mavis thought, burying her face into her hands. Her lips quivered but bit the inside of her cheek to quench the urge to cry out.

Knock! Knock! Knock!

Mavis jumped to her feet, startled by the sudden frantic banging at the door.

Makarov awoke and hastily slipped on his shoes to open the door. Standing at the door was a young soldier, fidgeting and sweating heavily.

"Master Makarov! You must come quickly! We are detecting a huge storm rapidly approaching Fiore!"

Makarov and Mavis both looked at the man with puzzled looks. A storm? All this fuss for a simple matter? It's not like storms were such rare occurrences in Ishgar.

Nevertheless, Makarov nodded and the two (with Mavis following closely behind) promptly made their way to the meeting room where they once again met with Queen Hisui and Captain Acardios.

The room was in total disarray with many officers and military advisors in the background scrambling about shouting orders to one another.

"Master Makarov, forgive us for waking you," Queen Hisui apologized, bowing her head.

"As you were told, a large storm system west of us is rapidly approaching. It will hit Crocus in approximately two minutes," said Captain Arcadios, skipping the formalities.

“What is the cause for concern, Captain? Our spies have reported no activity from Alvarez’s military," said Makarov.

“That’s the issue. We apparently lost contact with several of our spies about an half an hour ago.”

Makarov's eyes widened in disbelief and anger. “What?! Why didn’t you tell me this sooner!” shouted Makarov furiously.

“Because the report only just came in now!” snapped Captain Arcadios. Hisui looked nervously between the two men glaring at each other.

“I’m sure everything’s fine, Master Makarov,” said Hisui optimistically, yet failing miserably to conceal her increasing worriedness, “Our spies probably-”

Out of nowhere, an intelligence officer burst into the room, his face ghostly pale. "Your Majesty! Captain Arcadios! We are detecting multiple signatures throughout Fiore! Alerts are coming in from all over! We’re under attack!"

"Oh no… It’s too late," Makarov whispered, his hands falling to his sides, "We weren’t quick enough."

The old man pointed to the large window overlooking the capital. On the horizon, a fleet of Alvarez Battle Cruisers was flying straight toward the capital.

The room erupted into total mayhem as many officers fled from the room.

Arcadios, frustrated, remained composed even with displays of cowardice from those who turned tail. He turned to the remaining soldiers. He would have his Cherry Blossom Knights deal with those insubordinate at a later time. That is if they survived the night…

"Raise the alarm! Everyone to your battle stations!" barked Captain Arcadios. He turned to face Hisui, "Your Majesty! We must get you to safety!"

The young Queen shook her head defiantly, "I refuse to hide and let my citizens die!"

"Please, Your Highness! Those ships are going to tear the palace apart! You must get to the shelter!”

“A true leader does not abandon her people in their time of need! I will stay and fight!”

Time was running incredibly short and they couldn’t afford to argue any longer. Makarov had to speak up.

"You must get to safety, my Queen. Fiore will need its leader for the dark times that are ahead of us."

Hisui turned to argue but was interrupted as he continued, “It is noble that you wish to brave this storm but a dead queen won’t be able to lead anyone.”

Hisui turned her face away in defeat, realizing that Makarov was right. She would be of no use to anybody if she was dead.

“Fine! But I want updates on everything that is happening out there! Send out soldiers to help the people evacuate!”

“Yes, your Highness!”

They rushed from the room and Makarov got one last glance at Mavis before the wooden doors snapped shut behind them. Mavis had stayed behind to stare out the window.

"It's finally begun," Mavis grimaced as she silently watched Alvarez's ships begin to bomb the city. Each explosion rocked Crocus's very core. Fires from all around lit the night sky, creating an orange/red hue as dark smoke rose.

"Our game finally begins, Zeref. Looks like you moved the first piece."

Shit! It hurts! It's so hot! It burns!!

Mama!! Papa!!!

Natsu!!!

Help me!!!

Lucy! Please, wake up! Don't die! Lucy!

Lucy!!!

Lucy regained consciousness to the helpless pleas of Happy. She was now laying on the floor, her entire house set on fire. The black smoke was so thick and heavy, it made her cough and wheeze.

"GAHHHHH!" Lucy screamed, hot white searing pain shooting up her entire body. Lucy's stomach turned when she looked down at her leg and saw the blood, cuts, and sickeningly bent to an unnatural angle.

"Lucy!" Happy cried, utterly terrified. He was covered in ash and patches of his soft blue fur had been burned off. His right paw was broken.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The ground trembled with each explosion. Lucy could hear people outside screaming for their lives.

"Lucy! We have to get out of here!"

"Happy! Look out!" Lucy cried out. A flaming piece of her ceiling had crumbled and almost crushed Happy when Lucy instinctively snatched him and shielded him with her body.

Lucy gritted her teeth as scorching bits of debris landed on her upper back and shoulders, scalding her.

"Lucy!" Happy cried the moment he caught sight of her fresh burns.

"Happy, are you okay?!" Lucy asked, ignoring her pain. She was more worried about her best friend. He shuttered but nodded.

"Okay! We need to leave now!"

"But your leg! You're hurt!! Happy sobbed, pointing at her mangled leg.

Lucy realized that Happy was beyond frightened. They both were! Her heart ached to witness such a lovable person and her home in absolute ruin. But there was no time for sentimentality! They had to escape before the entire building collapsed!

"Happy, look at me! Please!" Lucy said gently, lifting his chin. He looked her in the eyes, fear etched into him, "We're leaving now. Okay?"

The little cat nodded and not sparing a single second, Lucy tried to crawl but instantly regretted doing so. The moment she shifted her weight onto her broken leg, she howled in agony.

"Lucy!!!"

"I'm fine! Go!" Lucy shouted, through grit teeth.

Happy knew he had to help Lucy! Using his one good paw, he grabbed the collar of Lucy's pajama top and helped navigate her through the field of rubble, avoiding the blazes.

It didn't take long for the fiery inferno to take its toll on them.

By the time they reached the apartment's front door, Happy had fainted from the smoke inhalation. Lucy wearily clawed both of them down the stairs. Each miserable step hurt more and more until she tumbled to the bottom.

The building's entrance door was right in front of her but Lucy couldn't move another inch. Her vision was slowly blackening. The smoke, the heat, and the pain. She couldn’t endure much more.

This is it, isn’t it? thought Lucy, Happy and I are going to die here. Lucy clenched her fist and hugged Happy close to her chest. Lucy shed a single tear, I just wish I could have seen everyone one last time.

CRASH!

The wooden door was smashed to pieces. Lucy felt cool, refreshing air wash over her entire body. Right before Lucy fainted, she saw the soft face of the man she's come to greatly admire.

"Natsu, you came," Lucy whispered with relief. She gave him a big toothy grin before passing out.

"Bwahaha!" howled Natsu in laughter. "Yes, and then you and Mira got into a fight!"

Erza grinned fondly, recollecting the events of that day. As young children, Mirajane and Erza would often squabble over petty things.

Whoosh!

Erza shivered when she felt a strong gust of wind. She wrapped herself tightly in her sweater to keep warm.

"Are you cold?" Natsu asked, placing his hand out and producing a small flame.

"Yeah, it got windy," Erza responded, huddling close to Natsu's flame, "That's weird, Mirajane said the weather would be clear all week."

Erza and Natsu looked towards the horizon at what appeared to be a large storm heading their direction.

"That sucks," Natsu grumbled, looking at the pitch-black clouds, "I wanted to go fishing tomorrow."

Erza chuckled, patting Natsu's back sympathetically.

"Thanks, Erza," Natsu said, "Maybe I can-AHH!"

Erza slightly flinched when Natsu suddenly yelped in pain, clutching his right eye.

"Oww! I think I got sand in my eye," Natsu groaned, revealing his red irritated eye.

Erza furrowed her brows, Sand?

She looked up and noticed the storm had significantly advanced in such a short time. The clouds were now touching the edge of Magnolia.

SWISH!

Violent winds raged across Magnolia as the storm hit. Leaves and branches from nearby trees and bushes snapped, scattered, and swirled everywhere.

Erza and Natsu shielded their faces as they were met with the storm's full force. The two listened to the deafening vortex pound their eardrums.

Silence…

What the hell? Erza thought The wind stopped? Erza slowly looked up and her heart dropped. She gasped, unable to mutter a single word.

The dark clouds had completely vanished, revealing the starry night once more. Hovering above them, was an entire fleet of Alvarez Cruiser Battleships!

"Natsu!" Erza screamed, frightening Natsu and causing him to look up!

BOOM!

The leading ship fired the initial strike, devastating the area near central Magnolia.

"LUCY! HAPPY!" Natsu roared as flames lit up the sky.

Natsu ran ignoring Erza's shouts behind him. Lucy lived near the shopping center of Magnolia. That explosion had hit her area!

Houses and buildings lit up as the Alvarez Fleet began their bombing.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Natsu dodged falling debris and explosions as he hurried through the streets of Magnolia. Natsu watched as people scrambled out of their houses, panicking and crying out in horror and confusion, unsure what to do as they were relentlessly bombarded.

Natsu turned the street corner and felt his stomach tighten when he ran past two charred corpses that were the size of children. The smell of burnt flesh and wood made Natsu want to wretch.

People all around him cried for help but Natsu couldn't stop to help them! He had to reach Lucy and Happy! He had to make sure his best friends were alive!

Natsu's ears rang with each eruption. His mind raced with fear as he jumped over everything that blocked his way. More and more corpses piled the streets the further he entered central Magnolia. He steeled himself to face ahead and ignore them until he finally reached Lucy's street!

His heart stopped when he saw Lucy's entire house set ablaze.

"LUCY!!! HAPPY!!!" Natsu bellowed, scrambling to her front door. He ate the fire and with a single punch, smashed the door into tiny pieces.

Laying at the door's step, Lucy held Happy, looking up at Natsu. She weakly uttered his name before smiling and losing consciousness.

Wasting zero time, he picked up both of them, carrying her bridal style while Happy rested on her stomach. Natsu grimaced, noticing how badly injured the two were. They need urgent first aid!

Natsu frantically looked around, unable to fully concentrate with all the chaos. But where could he go?! The city is in pandemonium.

The guild! Natsu thought, gripping Lucy tightly, It has to be safe there!

He dashed to the guild, praying the guildhall was still standing. It was a long shot but he had no other choice.

Everyone! Please be alright!

"Over here!" screamed Mirajane, escorting citizens into the Fairy Tail guildhall. Hordes of panicked people rushed to enter the building.

"INCOMING!!!" Elfman roared as a large building right of them was blown up, sending large chunks of debris everywhere. The shockwave was powerful enough to fling Mirajane backward.

"Big sis!" yelled Elfman, running to Mirajane's side and helping her get up. Her clothes were now slightly tattered but it didn't matter to her then.

"I'm fine!" Mirajane said, brushing her hair aside. She was more concerned with helping save as many people as possible.

Inside the guild, many Fairy Tail wizards were trying their best to provide first aid and relief.

Wendy, Carla, Kianna, and Laki were going around healing those with serious injuries. Wendy and Carla had been lucky when the bombing began as their building had avoided being targeted.

All of the residents of Fairy Hills evacuated fiercely and pushed through the city, rescuing many along the way.

"We need more bandages and gauze!" ordered Wendy, as she healed a large gash across a young woman's stomach. There was no way she would be able to heal everyone before using up all her magic.

"Right!" Carla and Laki nodded, running to fetch more medical supplies.

Everyone! Please be safe! Wendy thought as she moved to attend the next person.

Erza ran through the burning streets of Magnolia, helping those in need. Her eyes and nose stung from the heavy smoke and ash. She continued looking overhead as she sprinted, the seemingly endless fleet of the Alvarez Empire continued their barrage.

They had no way to counterattack! They’ve been caught off guard and aren’t able to form a defensive line!

Fuck! Erza thought as she dodged an explosion, her reflexes kicking in to equip her Fire Empress Armor.

They had no real chance of fighting back at this point! Their only hope was surviving the night. Erza knew she had to find Natsu which is why she was heading toward Central Magnolia.

"Erza!" screamed a man's voice from behind. She quickly turned around and saw Gajeel and Levy. He was carrying an unconscious child and man on his shoulders.

"Erza, what are you doing?! Levy yelled, "We have to get to the guildhall!"

Erza shook her head, "I can't! I have to find Natsu, Lucy, and Happy!"

She didn't wait for their responses, turning on her heels to continue her search, leaving her friends behind.

Natsu ran, panting heavily through the thick clouds of ash and soot. Lucy and Happy lay still in his arms. He wasn't even sure where he was anymore. The buildings around him were demolished, leaving the streets unrecognizable.

All he could hear was the sound of roaring fires and explosions! But he couldn't give up now! He clicks his tongue and turns right at the street intersection.

He immediately regretted his decision as he ran past hordes of burnt and crushed corpses.

No, don't look at them! Natsu thought, steeling himself to face forward and not anywhere else.

"Mama! Papa!" sobbed a young girl. Natsu felt his heart stop beating. A couple of feet ahead of him, sat a little girl, tugging and pulling the hands of her parent's bodies. It was obvious to Natsu, they were dead.

"Please, wake up!" she pleaded.

Natsu felt tears slowly fill his eyes. Just what the hell was happening?! Why?! Just why?!

He had to save the little girl too! He couldn't just leave her there! He broke into a sprint when suddenly the building in front where the girl sat collapsed.

"Nooo!" Natsu screamed as she was buried in the rubble. When he reached her, he saw a small hand sticking out from the pile of debris. It was now hanging limp and lifeless.

Natsu bit his tongue, crying as he forcibly tore himself away from her. He had failed to save the girl. If he had been faster then she'd still be alive.

His entire body trembled with anger and sadness. Natsu looked down in his arms. Lucy's soft face was covered in a mixture of dried blood and soot. Happy's soft blue fur burnt away in small spots. His little paw was broken.

It was because of him! That fucking bastard! His brother! All the deaths, the destruction of his beloved city! Him!

"ZEREF!!!" Natsu roared with pure fury into the orange-red night sky.

"Natsu?! Natsu?! Is that you?!" called out a woman's voice.

Natsu heard the clink of heavy metal boots running in his direction. Through the screen of smoke, he saw a flash of red hair.

All of Natsu's temporary rage left his body as relief washed over him. He smiled weakly when Erza caught up to him, carefully pulling him into a hug.

"Erza, please…" he sniffled, Erza's presence soothing him, "Help us…"

Erza gasped when she got a closer look at Lucy and Happy and realized how badly injured the two were. She opened her mouth to speak but opted to stay silent, instead choosing to nod.

"We need to get to the guild then. We can get help there," said Erza, pointing to the direction they needed to follow.

"Thank you," whispered Natsu softly, his hair covering his eyes.

The two silently made their way to Fairy Tail.

"All batteries! Fire! Fire!" Captain Arcadios commanded, his voice booming.

The Jupiter Cannons mounted around the Royal Castle fired, blowing apart multiple ships and sending them crashing below.

"All units, be on alert! Be prepared at a moment's notice to engage hostile ground troops!"

Crocus was now on the offense! The Royal Military had somehow managed to form an undersized defensive line amidst the endless bombing.

Acardios couldn't help but scowl. Their response time had been incredibly awful and it ended up costing them many lives!

"Fire at will!" Aracadios barked.

"Captain, the enemy fleet is retreating!" one of the communications officers said, informing Aracadios.

The bombing stopped, leaving the air eerily silent. From what can be seen, the Alvarez fleet was fleeing. Leaving a devastated Crocus and breaking off into two groups that each headed north and south.

All around Fiore, everyone watched as the ships flew away into the distant sky. Nobody said anything as they stood in the center of it all. The death, the suffering, the destruction.

Mavis clenched her fist helplessly as she got a full view of the ravaged land from atop of one Crocus's statues.

More than half of the capital city had been razed to the ground. The only noises that could be heard were the sounds of burning buildings and wind.

The sun is rising, marking this night as one of the darkest days in Fiore's history. An attack that rocked the lives of Fiore and her people. And it was only just the beginning…

In Magnolia, the Fairy Tail guild received the terrifying reminder that their 'final battle' from one month ago hadn't truly ended. The happy facade they had worn for one month had been shattered like a mirror.

Zeref and his Empire had come once again…They will come again…and Fairy Tail had to be ready…

In Makarov's office, Lucy and Happy rested together in a makeshift hospital bed. The two had been patched up and then quickly healed by Wendy's magic.

Natsu sat by their bedside, holding Lucy's hand. The sunlight slowly filled the room with its warm bright embrace. But Natsu felt nothing but coldness and sorrow.

His 'brother' had hurt his family and friends that he held dearly in his heart. Natsu would make sure Zeref would pay for his crimes.

But for now, he will protect Lucy and Happy. It was all he could do at the moment.

Alvarez Fleet

Command Ship

05:30

An Alvarez commander, knocked eagerly on his General's office.

"Come in," said a woman's voice from behind the door.

The commander opened the door and bowed, apologizing for his intrusion. The woman said nothing as she sipped from her glass of alcohol.

“Congratulations, General Dimaria! The operation was an overwhelming success! We sustained minimal casualties, losing only fourteen ships in the entire operation! His Royal Highness will be pleased!"

Dimaria nodded, tracing her finger along the rim of her glass. He quickly debriefed the reports, failing to notice Dimaria's complete disinterest in what he had to say. He was quickly dismissed and he saluted her respectfully, leaving her office to join the celebration.

Dimaria quickly rose from her seat, taking her drink, and standing by the window, leaning against the wall of her office.

For some odd reason, Dimaria couldn't muster up the will to celebrate. Deep inside, she felt heavily conflicted about what the hell they've just done. Dimaria frowned as she looked out her window to watch the sunrise over the ocean's horizon. A mixture of fear and disgust filled her chest.

Why can’t I shake the feeling that all we have done is awaken a sleeping dragon?

Chapter Text

It had been one week since the Alvarez Empire suffered their humiliating defeat at the Battle of Magnolia. Irene had been traveling the world in search of Earthland’s most dangerous threat—a man who would bring about the apocalypse unless he was stopped.

Irene let out a deep sigh as she arrived at the entrance of a dark cave. The surrounding green, lush landscape contrasted sharply with the foreboding rocky mountain. A soft breeze washed over her, carrying the songs of birds that blissfully thrived in this remote haven. It was hard to believe that such a serene place had become the lair of a monster.

Behind her, two girls cowered in fear. Juliet and Heine's knees buckled under the weight of their terror, sensing the dreadful malice radiating from deep within the cavern.

“Lady Irene, are you really going into that spooky cave? That monster is there!” squeaked Juliet. Heine gulped, glancing between her general and her friend.

Irene merely nodded, her expression betraying a hint of fear and hesitation—something that shocked her subordinates. They had never known Lady Irene to fear anyone.

“His Majesty tasked me with this mission, and I will complete it.”

Juliet and Heine opened their mouths to protest, but with a snap of Irene’s fingers, both girls were transformed back into a pair of swords. Pocketing the weapons, Irene stepped into the cave.

The air reeked of his scent. The ‘Black Dragon of the Apocalypse’ had claimed this isolated mountain as his home.

Heading deeper into the cavern, Irene spotted him: a tan-skinned man with long black hair sitting atop a flat stone. His tattered, weathered cloak barely concealed his form.

Acnologia, who had been examining his one remaining arm, looked up at the sound of approaching heels. He sniffed the air, instantly recognizing her scent. It was the red-haired woman he had briefly toyed with a week earlier.

“Irene. Have you come here to die?” Acnologia smirked, leaning lazily against the cold stone wall.

Irene chuckled and shook her head. “No, Sir Acnologia. I come here on behalf of His Imperial Majesty.”

Acnologia laughed, his cackle reverberating through the cave. “Running errands for the Black Wizard now? Does Zeref fear me that much?”

Irene scoffed, her lips curling into a smile. “Perhaps. His Majesty is... preoccupied. I’ve come to relay his new proposition concerning the final battle between the Dragon King, an immortal, and mankind.”

The air grew tense as Acnologia’s glistening eyes locked onto Irene’s.

“His Majesty proposes a temporary truce. Our war against Ishgar failed. The enemies proved far stronger than we anticipated. Continuing would have ensured our defeat.”

Acnologia burst into laughter. “The fabled Black Wizard couldn’t kill a few weak humans? Pathetic!”

Irene suppressed a flinch as Acnologia rose. His malice permeated the cave, his glare almost unbearable.

“I don’t care about Zeref’s war! I crave destruction! Once I kill the remaining dragons, humanity will be next!”

Irene steadied herself, fighting her instincts to flee. Swallowing hard, she delivered the crucial information Emperor Spriggan had entrusted to her.

“Then this part will interest you. His Majesty offers a truce, and in return, he will reveal the locations of five dragons—dragons who have eluded you and grown strong. Each rivals your power. Additionally, he will disclose the location of a wizard guild composed solely of Dragon Slayers.”

Acnologia’s eyes widened in shock. Five dragons? A Dragon Slayer guild?

It seemed impossible! For 400 years, Acnologia had scoured the world, yet he had neither smelled nor sensed any dragons beyond those he hunted!

Growling in fury, Acnologia snarled, “Lies! The Black Wizard is only trying to buy time! I won’t fall for his tricks!”

Irene shook her head. “His Majesty does not lie. These dragons, though hidden, are real. Individually, they may not pose much of a challenge to you, but together…”

“NO DRAGON IS STRONGER THAN ME!” Acnologia roared. “I WILL FIND THEM AND SLAUGHTER THEM!”

Irene smirked. Acnologia had taken the bait as Zeref predicted. Now it was time to seal the deal. It was crucial for Emperor Spriggan’s plan to pacify the Black Dragon. They needed him to be a good boy while they dealt with Ishgar.

“The locations will be revealed to you only if you accept the truce. Refuse, or break the agreement, and His Majesty will warn the dragons and the guild of your hunt.”

Acnologia lunged at Irene, but she dodged, his fist smashing into the rock wall, sending tremors through the mountain.

“TELL ME WHERE THEY ARE, WOMAN!”

Irene sighed, clicking her tongue. “Accept the truce, and in four years, once Ishgar is annihilated, the dragons and guild will be yours.”

Acnologia’s body trembled with rage. His missing arm throbbed with pain as his mind raced. He despised Igneel for weakening his body: forever subjecting him to a life of misery.

Finally, he growled, “Fine. I will play along with Zeref’s game. But if I discover it’s a lie, I’ll kill you all.”

Irene bowed, her tone dripping with false sweetness. “Thank you for your kind cooperation, Sir Acnologia! Always a pleasure when our paths cross!”

As she walked away, his voice echoed behind her.

“You’re the first I’ll slay when this is over, dragon woman.”

Outside, Irene basked in the sunlight and suppressed a snicker. Acnologia had taken the bait. Once they acquired the Fairy Heart, they would kill him. His hatred of dragons would be his downfall.

Smiling, Irene tapped her staff, and Juliet and Heine reappeared. They eagerly joined her for the journey home, oblivious to her inner thoughts.

The mission was a success. Everything was falling perfectly into place. Soon, Emperor Spriggan would make his move once more against Fairy Tail, and Ishgar would pay dearly.
