Chapter Text

Charles landed outside of a small bar and Kaz hopped off of his mecha-butler. The magistocrat was rather disappointed that his visit to the watchmaker had yielded no success in finding out where the watch may have come from or who could have made it.

Kaz slid open the door to the bar and walked in. Charles was too large to properly fit in the small bar and so took the opportunity to go power up at a charging station.

“Yo, Kaz! Great to see you. Sweet threads you got on there,” Lexy said as he waved to his friend and admired the suit the magistocrat was wearing.

“Alright, old man, shoo!” Gottlieb said, kicking the old man out of the bar so that Kaz had a place to sit. There were only two seats in the entire bar and one was always used by Gottlieb when the place was open.

“Hey, Lexy. Hey, Gottlieb,” Kaz sighed as he walked over and took a seat by the bar.

“Hey, why the long face, B?” Lexy asked as he wiped a glass with a towel.

The magistocrat glumly rested his face in his hand as he leaned on the bar. “Well, it started this morning when someone mysteriously left a package at my apartment door along with a very condescending message,” Kaz explained.

            “What was it?” Gottlieb asked.

“The package turned out to be a counterfeit Cartier watch and the message read that it’s what someone like me deserves for being a neo-riche rat catcher,” he stated.

Both Lexy and Gottlieb gasped at hearing what Kaz just said and stared with their mouths wide open. Lexy wound up dropping a glass in the process. He quickly grabbed a broom to sweep up the broken pieces.

“Yo! That is messed up, dawg. Not cool!” Lexy said as he carefully cleaned up the mess.

“I bet it was Arcangelo or someone from his group,” Gottlieb said.

“That’s what I thought too since Arcangelo had previously sent me an imitation silk shirt to send the same kind of message, but I called him and he stated he would never stoop so low as to purchase a counterfeit luxury item, even for a joke,” Kaz stated.

“Humph! So, I guess blondie does have some integrity,” Lexy commented as he gathered the broken glass in a dustpan and dumped it in a garbage can.

“But that’s just Arcangelo. There are certainly plenty of others who would stoop that low just to send a message,” Gottlieb said.

“Don’t I know it,” Kaz sighed. He had received his fair share of derision from Neo Yokio’s elite, particularly those from the East Side who were old money. For people in the upper class, they certainly didn’t act very classy. This investigation was going to be a lot more difficult than Kaz had expected, but the magistocrat wasn’t about to admit defeat. He would find whoever sent that watch and give them a piece of his mind.

“Here ya go, Kaz. It’s on the house, just to cheer you up a bit,” Lexy said as he placed a caprese martini in front of the magistocrat after mixing up the drink for his friend. Kaz picked up the martini and swirled it around for a bit, then took a sip. He smiled for the first time since he had stepped into the bar.

“Thanks, guys. I’m glad I was able to chat. This has been weighing on my mind all day and I’ve been trying to figure out who sent that watch and where they got it, but I haven’t found any good leads,” Kaz stated before finishing his martini.

“We’ll certainly lend a hand and keep our eyes and ears open for you,” Gottlieb said.

“Yeah, B. Ain’t nobody messin’ with the great Kaz Kaan without facing the wrath of his best buds,” Lexy said and flexed a muscle.

Kaz chuckled as a warm smile lit up his face. “Thank you, guys. I really appreciate it,” he said. The magistocrat was happy to have such good friends like Lexy and Gottlieb. In the cutthroat world of Neo Yokio high society, he always knew they had his back.

Notes:

Written for Flash Fiction Month 2023. This is the last chapter to be written for this particular theme month.

That doesn't mean this story is over. There is still much more to tell. But now the chapters can be longer than 1000 words.

I wanted to show a touching moment between friends in this piece and also get Kaz's friends Lexy and Gottlieb involved with the plot as well. Plus I wanted another place for Kaz to show off his new suit.
