Chapter Text
Raine Whispers wasn’t having a good day. What was supposed to have been a simple hour-and-a-half drive turned into them being stranded in an unfamiliar place. Sure, their car was pretty old, but it still irked them that their only form of transportation died on them in the middle of nowhere. They let out an annoyed sound as they shut the hood and wiped the sweat off their brow. Of course, it had to be a humid and hot day when their car broke down.
They looked around and focused on the flowers in the ditch, immediately recognizing the different wildflowers. They shook their head, knowing now wasn’t the time to look at flowers. They slipped their hand into the pocket of their jeans, pulling their phone out and groaning when they noticed they didn’t have any service in the area. “Just great…” They said, letting out a frustrated groan, at a loss as to how they would find help. They looked up as they heard soft rock music getting closer, deciding that it’d be worth a shot to try and wave someone down to help them. A red truck slowed as it got closer; the music went quiet as the driver pulled behind Raine’s vehicle. What Raine didn’t expect was for the driver to get out immediately.
“Everything good? You look like you’re having some trouble,” the driver said, her orange hair sparkling in the sunlight.
“Yeah… car troubles… and I’m not getting any service out here,” Raine said sheepishly, watching the other driver walk closer.
“Mind if I take a look under the hood? I know a little bit about cars, plus it might be something I can help with before I need to call a guy that would be able to fix it,” She said, Raine not hesitating to open the hood so she could give it a look over. “Hmmm… looks like it might be the alternator or the battery… mind if I call my guy? He can tow you to his shop and easily fix it.” She said, earning a nod from Raine.
“Of course, that’d be helpful, especially if you have service out here, unlike me,” Raine said, not hesitating to accept help. “Oh, I’m Raine, by the way… and you are?” They asked, wanting to thank her formally.
“Eda Clawthorne… so Raine, what brings you this way? Not often, someone comes to little old Bonesborough.“ Eda asked, able to tell that Raine wasn’t from the countryside.
“I was on my way to Lattisa… at least I was till my car broke down.” They said, embarrassed that they knew nothing about cars and happened to be stranded.
“Grab your stuff, and I’ll give you a lift into town while we wait for my friend to tow your car to his shop,” Eda said, knowing it was the right thing to do. Raine nodded their head and moved their stuff to her truck before getting in while holding their violin case close. The ride into town was quiet; even the music Eda was listening to was turned down super low.
“Thanks, Eda… I don’t know what I would’ve done if you hadn’t stopped.” Raine said, breaking the silence.
“It’s not a problem. Lucky it was me rather than someone else… some people in town aren’t the friendliest and would’ve ignored you,” Eda said as they got closer to town. She turned down main street before stopping in front of an auto repair shop. “C’mon, Blight Auto Repair will ensure your car gets here and fixed so you can get on your way,” She told them before exiting the truck and heading to the open garage door where a purple GMC Sierra was being worked on. Raine followed her, leaving their violin case on the truck’s floor. “Hey, Ala-dork, I got someone who needs your help,” The tall female shouted, approaching the purple truck.
“In a moment, Edalyn… let me find a good stopping point from this oil change… “The man under the truck said. It was a couple of minutes before he rolled out and noticed that Eda wasn’t alone.” For god’s sake, Eda, why didn’t you mention you weren’t alone? “He asked, wiping his hands on a rag as he stood up.
“Look, I did say I had someone who needs your help, Alador. However, their car is on the side of the road on the highway heading east out of town. It needs to be towed and fixed; not entirely sure what’s going on, but I’m guessing it’s either the alternator or the battery, if not both.” Eda said, getting a little snippy towards him.
Alador nodded his head before looking at Raine. “Make and model?” He asked, stifling a yawn, hiding how exhausted his job made him.
“Uhh… A grey 97 Toyota Camry.” Raine said, earning a nod from Alador.
“I’ll go get it few, and I’ll take a look after I finish this oil change… the owner of this truck is starting to get on my nerves,” Alador said jokingly.
“That’s Luz for you. You know she’s excited that she has all summer to help at my family’s farm.” Eda said, knowing that the teen loved being out there.
“Well, I’ll get going. I’ll call Eda when I figure out what’s wrong, so stick with her.” Alador said, heading over to his shop table and grabbing the keys to his truck.
“Thanks, Ala-dork, I owe ya one,” Eda said, motioning for Raine to follow her. “Well, till he gets around to calling, I guess we can get a bite to eat across the street,” Eda said, motioning for Raine to follow her across the street where the diner was.
They both headed to an open table when they entered the small town diner, Raine instantly relaxing at the feeling of air conditioning and the low sound level of other patrons.
“Welcome to the Golden Crest Diner. May I take your order?” A tired voice said, catching the musician off guard due to them and Eda only having sat down. The voice belonged to a blond-haired teen who, by the looks of it, didn’t sleep well.
“Give us a few minutes, Hunter; they’re new in town,” Eda said, letting the teen know what was happening. Hunter nodded his head before saying he’d be back in a bit. Raine glanced at the menu, a little overwhelmed by all the options despite it being a small diner. They were about to ask Eda a question when someone sat next to Eda.
“Hey Eda, what brings you into town today?” The newcomer asked, having not noticed Raine yet.
“Well, I rescued someone off the side of the road, so I brought them into town to talk to Blight about getting their car and looking at it,” Eda said, ruffling the teen’s hair. “Speaking of which, Luz, this is Raine… well, I never got a last name for them, but they’re the one I rescued. So, Raine, this is Luz, a family friend who helps out on my folk’s ranch in her free time.” Eda said, introducing the two.
“Oh, Whispers, Raine Whispers,” Raine said, realizing the attention was on them.
“Nice to meet you, Raine. Not often that we have someone new in town.” Luz said, knowing Bonesbouroh was often a drive-through and forgotten small town.
“It’s nice to meet you as well, Luz, and yeah, Eda helped me out, and I’m kind of just waiting to hear how long it’d take to repair my car,” Raine said, sensing that Eda knew just about everyone. It wasn’t long until Hunter returned to take their orders, a stifled groan leaving the teen’s body upon seeing Luz join the table.
“You know what I want, Hunter? A double bacon cheeseburger, fries, and a Dr. Pepper,” Eda said before looking at Raine.
“Uhh… I’ll have chicken strips and water, please,” Raine said, glad there was at least one of their safe foods.
“You know very well what I want, big bro, a Chicago dog with waffle chili cheese fries and a Mountain Dew,” Luz said, not caring that she’d feel like shit later. Hunter wrote all their orders down, not even trying to stop Luz from having dairy.
“Kid, you know you’re not gonna feel good later, so please tell me you have your dairy relief tablets on hand cus you know you shouldn’t make yourself sick on purpose,” Eda said, sighing since she knew Luz often ignored the fact that she was lactose intolerant.
“I have them… in my truck…” Luz said, having forgotten to grab them from her glovebox. Eda let out a sigh, despite knowing that she should be used to the teen forgetting them.
“You’re so lucky I carry some around, just in case,” Eda said as she pulled one from her purse. She handed it to the teen, who begrudgingly took it with a pout. “Besides, you know your mom would kill me if I didn’t at least attempt to keep you from getting sick,” Eda said, shaking her head as Hunter came by with their drinks.
“Mountain Dew for Luz, a Dr. Pepper for Eda, and a bottle of water for the new person I don’t have a name for,” Hunter mumbled, setting the drinks in front of the respective person. The three all thanked him before chatting while waiting for their food.
“There’s Alador finally heading to get your car, Raine. Looks like he got distracted messing with Luz’s truck again,” Eda said, teasing the teen about it due to how often the truck is in the shop.
“Hey, at least this was essential, though I’m hoping he has time to help me get this new addition to the truck sometime this week….” Luz said, immediately hatching a plan to get Raine to stay a little longer than it would actually take for Alador to fix their car.
“Oh, yeah… tell me about this new addition, kiddo,” Eda said as Hunter approached them with their food.
“A light bar for my truck… gonna make calf season a lot easier, along with finding any missing cows easier in the dark,” Luz said, deciding against teasing her brother while he was at work. “See… it should arrive tomorrow, and Mr. Blight said he’d install it for me for $75 bucks since I ordered it myself,” Luz said, showing the older woman a picture of the lights she ordered.
“Dang kid, you sure have put a lot of work into that truck in the year and a half you’ve had it. How much have you put into it so far?” Eda asked, knowing that she probably wouldn’t be surprised.
“Almost 4k, not including the labor charges Alador charged me… so maybe closer to 6k with those, but he said he’d get the lights installed for $75 since I ordered them myself,” Luz said. “Also, I technically owe him like 4k still, but that’s cuz he was willing to let me make monthly payments,” Luz said before digging into her fries.
“Hey, Mr. Blight, my lights are coming in tomorrow, so maybe sometime this week, if you have time, we can get them on?” Luz asked, waving over Alador.
“If I got time... gotta get their car going,” Alador said before turning his attention to Raine. “So you blew a head gasket, so that means that there was a coolant leak somewhere, and it got bad. So that’s a day’s fix at the minimum and somewhere around 2k to fix. Better off replacing the whole engine at this point, but that would be somewhere around the same price range but might take me a few days to even find one. So the choice is up to you Mr. Whispers,” Alador said, not noticing how Raine flinched at that.
“It’s actually Mx. Whispers,” They said, causing Alador to apologize profusely. “It’s fine... you couldn’t have known,” They said, trying to reassure the man. “It’d probably make sense to replace the whole engine then... to keep it running a little longer,” They said, a frustrated sigh leaving their lips, knowing that was gonna set them back quite a bit financially.
Eda and Luz shared a look, realizing that they had both found someone new to join the GA Meetings. “Look... if you need somewhere to stay, Eda does have a spare room that I’m sure she wouldn’t mind letting you use till Mr. Blight gets your car running again,” Luz said, nearly causing Eda to choke on her Dr. Pepper. Luz let out a laugh as Eda playfully shoved the teen.
“Kid, that’s rude that you offered my place. What do I look like? A safe house?” Eda said, teasing Luz since she knew her place was a safe haven for many people.
“But Eda... you’re really the only person they know outside of me and Mr. Blight,” Luz whined, knowing she had a point. “Besides... you fed them... and you know your rule regarding feeding people,” Luz said, watching Eda sigh.
“Yeah... I really gotta stop feeding strays...” Eda chuckled before finishing her meal. “I tease Whispers, but at the rate I welcome people into my home, it’s like feeding strays... cus I feed them one time, and they don’t stop leaving me alone,” She said, watching Raine crack a smile at her teasing.
“Her family’s ranch is amazing though... and... wait, Eda, did you not bring King with you?” Luz asked, just realizing the Coydog wasn’t with her.
“I wasn’t planning on stopping in town for this long, so I left the pup at home. Besides, he was naughty this morning, so I wasn’t gonna reward his behavior,” Eda said, knowing that her pets weren’t gonna be thrilled with someone new at the house (at least King and Hooty weren’t going to be delighted).
“Doubt he’s gonna be happy that you brought someone new over... ” Luz said, knowing King was a little protective of Eda and Hooty... well, he was a lot in his own way.
“King will tolerate them; Owlbert will probably love Raine and Hooty... well... that’s who I’m concerned will not like another person in the house... he’s not gonna be happy having to stay in his cage,” Eda said, knowing her pets were probably all treat Raine differently.
“I don’t want to intrude, especially since this is sudden and you just met me; for all any of you know, I could be a serial killer,” Raine said, internally groaning as they realized what they said. ‘Stupid, that was stupid,’ They thought, hating how they spoke before thinking.
“Look, that’s a risk I’m willing to take, considering you haven’t killed me yet, and I doubt you could hurt a fly,” Eda said, giving Raine a cheeky smile. “Besides, I think I can hold my ground against them if they try,” She teased, causing Raine and Luz to laugh.
“Are you ready for your bill, Eda?” Hunter asked, finally returning to check on the group, silently praying the group was done.
“Yeah, we’re ready, and it’s all on me,” Eda said, directing that towards Raine, who was about to ask for their separate.
“I can pay for my own. It’s no problem,” Raine said, not wanting to feel like they owed Eda for not only housing them while their car was getting work done.
“Too late; once Eda insists on feeding someone, she will not let them pay for themselves. Trust me, I’ve tried to pay my way before, and she won’t let me,” Luz said, warning Raine that Eda was stubborn and they had to get used to it.
“Fine, but I’m paying next time cus it’ll make things even,” Raine said, being serious about it.
Hunter stayed quiet as he handed Eda the bill, knowing she’d give him a decent tip because she adored him. “You know the drill... bring it to the counter when you’re ready,” Hunter said before leaving the group to finish their conversations.
“I should probably get started on looking for an engine for your vehicle, Raine,” Alador said as he stood up, tossing the keys to her truck. “I’ll get the bill for your oil change if you stop by tomorrow, kid,” He said before heading out to look for an engine for Raine’s car.
“Luz, you still coming out to the ranch later to help with the chores and join us for dinner?” Eda asked, earning a nod as Luz finished her soda.
“Yeah,” The teen said, slipping her phone into her pocket. “Just gotta run some errands for Mama, and then I’ll be there,” Luz said, giving Eda and Raine a wave before heading out.
“Alright, I’ll let my parents know to set you a plate at dinner,” Eda said before turning to Raine. “Just saying this now, don’t let my dad scare ya, he may seem tough, but he’s a big softy,” Eda said as she and Raine headed to her truck. “Besides... It’s my mom you need to look out for... I tolerate her cus I get to live rent-free in the guest house and not worry about her bugging me too much out there, but she’s more likely to give you the shovel talk over Dad,” She added as she and Raine got in her truck. “Any music requests, or is rock okay?” She asked, more than willing to listen to something other than rock.
“Rock is fine, just not too loud, please,” Raine said, not wanting to risk going into a sensory overload.
Eda nodded as she turned on one of her playlists, keeping the volume down for them. The drive to the ranch was relatively quiet and relaxing, especially since she knew that it was gonna be a lazy afternoon till it was time to do her share of the ranch chores, eat dinner at the main house, and then get to the annoying part of owning an antique store, actually doing her job and going over the day’s sales and making sure her employees clocked in and out.
“So Raine... what do you do for a living?” Eda asked, curious about the person she’d be housing for a few days.
“I actually had my own flower shop back in Achilles before selling it. I was on my way to Latissa where my moms live to be a little closer to them and open a new shop there,” Raine said, opening up since they were more than willing to let Eda get to know them since she was letting them stay with her. “What about you? I mean... I know you probably help out on your family’s ranch, but do you do anything else?” They asked, a little curious.
“I own an antique store near the diner we ate at, got a couple of employees who help out on days I can’t make it,” Eda said as they approached the gate to the ranch.
“Welcome to Cardinal Points Ranch. As you can see, we focus on cattle and have around 300 head, and that includes the calves and yearlings,” Eda said as she took a left at the fork on the property. “Been in the family for years... you’ll see the main house at dinner, but that’s the original house that my ancestors built.... well, most of it. It’s been renovated and added onto throughout the generations. However, it still has some of the original material,” Eda said, pulling to a stop in front of the smaller guest house. She watched as King ran towards her truck, barking as she opened her door and picked him up. “There’s mama’s stinker... sorry I was gone longer than I intended to be,” She said as she kissed the top of the Coydog’s head, a chuckle leaving her lips as the canine nuzzled close to her. “Alright, Raine, get your stuff while I hold this little gremlin,” She said, watching Raine get out of her truck and grab their stuff.
“King, bedroom,” Eda said as she set the pup down, watching him run through the dog door and into the house. She headed to the front door and unlocked it, holding it open for Raine. “Living room and kitchen are here, the bathroom is down the hall on the left, and my room is at the end of the hall near the stairs to the basement. You’ll be in the room second to the right,” Eda said, opening the door to the spare room.
Raine thanked her as they stepped into the room, noticing it was a bit musty smelling but brushed it off as Eda not having guests. They set their violin case on the dresser, keeping it out of reach of Eda’s pets. They sighed as they looked out the window, spotting a lake in the distance.
“Sorry about the musty smell... I can get some clean sheets and blankets if you want me to,” Raine turned around as Eda’s voice pulled them from their thoughts. “I don’t really have guests often, so this room gets a little musty in between occupants,” She said, chuckling nervously. “The room next door belongs to Luz when she stays, but other than that, it’s just me and my three pets,” She admitted, realizing how lonely that made her sound.
“It’s understandable. I don’t think anyone could’ve foreseen any of today happening,” Raine said, knowing that neither of them expected this. They watched as Eda took the musty sheets off the bed, moving to help her by grabbing the blankets. “I’ll help out as long as I’m here... well, around the house... I’ve never really been on a ranch or around livestock,” Raine admitted, having never lived outside of the city.
“Don’t you worry, townie, this cowgirl will keep ya safe from the dangers of a grass puppy,” Eda teased, knowing she’d help them get used to the countryside while their car was in the shop. “But yeah, I’ll accept help around the house if you insist on it,” She said, ensuring they followed her before she entered the basement where her laundry set up was. “Sorry about the mess down here... sometimes I get stuff that needs to be fixed up before I sell it, and it ends up down here,” She said, a little embarrassed that someone other than herself, her two employees, or Luz was seeing the mess.
“The joys of owning a business... you end up bringing work home sometimes, happens to everyone, I think,” Raine said, not seeing why she felt the need to apologize.
“Yeah, but it happens to me frequently... but since I might have a buyer interested in a larger piece at the store, I should be able to move some of this there,” Eda said as she set the sheets in the washers and grabbed the laundry detergent. “Just set the blankets in the basket. I’ll put them in the next load,” She said, appreciating the help.
Raine set the blankets down where she told them to put them, following her back upstairs once the washer was going.
“I’m warning you now if you hear unholy screeching... that’s Hooty... my cockatoo... he shouldn’t bother you too much. Just tell him to leave you alone if he bugs you... King... well, he might not give you the time of day... he’s not a fan of strangers,” Eda began, figuring she’d give Raine a fair warning regarding her pets. “Really, the only one who might actually like you is Owlbert... but he likes everyone, so don’t panic if you see a cat following you... unless you’re allergic to cats... you aren’t allergic, right?” She asked, realizing she never asked before bringing them there.
“No, I’m not allergic to cats, so that’s not an issue with me,” Raine said, letting her know. “Besides, even if I was, allergy medicine is a thing.”
“Fair enough, so yeah....” Eda trailed off, losing her train of thought for a moment. “You’ll likely be alone when I go and help out with the chores... King usually goes with me, but I’ll definitely stop back here afterward to grab you before heading to the main house for dinner,” She said, knowing that she was nervous since her parents (specifically her mom) would assume that she brought home yet another potential partner. Didn’t help her parents were always wary whenever she had someone new over, especially after her divorce over 20 years from her first husband.
“That sounds good,” Raine said, glad she wasn’t dragging them out to help (which made sense the more they thought of it). “So.... what time do you head out to do your chores then?” They asked, a little curious.
Eda looked at the time on her phone, curious about how long she had before she had to help. “At five, so... two and a half hours till I gotta go,” She said, heading to the kitchen and grabbing a glass of water. “I’m probably gonna nap after getting some fresh sheets and blankets out for you... cus god only knows how late I’ll be up doing the daily paperwork for my shop,” Eda said, knowing that she found it easier to do that stuff at night.
Raine nodded their head, figuring they would probably take a nap as well, especially since they were on the verge of shutting down from how stressful their day had been already.
Eda grabbed clean sheets and a blanket from the hall closet and set them in Raine’s temporary room, setting an alarm on her phone so she didn’t oversleep and miss her chores before heading to her room.
Raine quickly made their bed, stifling a yawn as they set their glasses on the nightstand before laying on top of the blanket.
-_-_-_-
As 5 o’clock rolled around, Eda woke up to her alarm, shutting it off and begrudgingly getting out of bed. She gave King a pet as she yawned, making her way out of her room to get going on her chores. She spotted Raine’s door open slightly, peering in and spotting Raine asleep with Owlbert stretched out next to them. “Cheater,” She mumbled, knocking on the door loud enough to wake her current roommate up enough. “Hey, sleepyhead, I’m about to head out and get started on my chores,” She said once Raine woke up a little bit.
“Mmmmkay...” Raine mumbled, yawning before reaching over and petting Owlbert. “You must be Owlbert... aren’t you a pretty kitty,” They said, feeling the cat move to lay on their chest. “I don’t think he’ll let me leave when you come back to get me after doing your chores,” They said, not bothering even to attempt grabbing their glasses due to not wanting the cat to leave them.
“He will... cus I know what gets him moving,” Eda said, knowing that she was gonna feed her pets their dinner before she left for her chores. She headed to the kitchen and opened the container of wet cat food, scrunching her nose at the smell as she grabbed a plate. She had to resist chuckling when she heard a disappointed sound from Raine’s room, knowing Owlbert only left them because of food. She set the plate on the floor before moving to get King’s food served up; the Coydog was running when he heard his kibble hitting his bowl.
Eda returned to her room while the Coydog ate to finish getting ready, grabbing a hair tie and pulling her back. “Damn... you need a trim girl,” She said to her reflection, noticing the split ends. “Oh, well, that’s future Eda’s problem,” She shrugged, knowing that it wasn’t too important to get done. She headed back to the front door and slipped her shoes on before grabbing her keys and a hat and calling for King.
The Coydog ran from his bowl and let out a bark as he ran out the front door to the truck, waiting patiently for Eda to open the door so he could hop in. Eda chuckled at King’s impatience, opening the driver-side door and waiting for him to jump in before getting in herself and driving toward the main house, knowing that’s where Luz would meet her to get their chores done.
“Hey Eda, are we taking your truck or mine?” Luz asked, letting her truck idle as she waited for an answer.
“Yours, so I’ll turn mine off and hop into the bed. We gotta seperate the calves from the adults, and we only have three calves this year. Besides, I don’t need you getting hurt by the cattle,” Eda said, knowing that while she knew the mamas trusted her, she didn’t want to risk Luz getting hurt.
“Alright, let’s go Eda,” Luz said, running back to her truck, leaving the door open for King to join her in the cab. The duo did their chores efficiently, Eda holding onto the three calves in the bed as they were brought to the barn (with their moms following the truck). “I can finish from here, Eda, cus I’m gonna make an obvious guess and say you left Raine at the guest house, am I right?” The teen asked, earning a nod.
“Alright, see ya in the house, kiddo,” Eda said, ruffling Luz’s hair before getting in her truck and driving back to the smaller home on the property, honking the horn when she arrived.
Raine headed outside when they heard Eda honk, jogging over to her truck. “Hey, that didn’t take long,” They said, guessing it was from years of doing it.
“Yeah, just years of doing it. Plus, once Luz started helping out, it got quicker,” Eda said as she drove back to the main house, more than willing to answer any questions they had. “For a townie, you sure are interested in ranch life. Maybe while your car is getting fixed, I can show you the ropes if ya want?” She asked, earning a nod from Raine.
“I... I’d like that...” Raine said, finally finding their voice as the main house appeared in front of the duo.
“I’m also gonna apologize ahead of time for my mom... let’s just say she’s looking out for me after some shit happened a long time ago,” Eda said, silently praying that her mom wouldn’t drag it up.
They headed into the house once Eda pulled to a stop, the redhead took a deep breath to prepare herself mentally before entering the house with Raine.
“Just in time, Edalyn, I was worried you weren’t going to join tonight,” Gwen said, still facing the stove much to Eda’s delight.
“Yeah, sorry, had to run back to the guest house for something,” Eda said, motioning for Raine to take a seat at the table.
“Who’s your friend, pumpkin?” Dell asked, easily grabbing another plate and cup from the cupboards for his daughter’s guest.
“Raine Whispers, sir,” Raine said, a little nervous since Eda’s dad seemed a little intimidating despite Eda having told them that her dad was a big softy.
“Yeah.. sorry for not mentioning it earlier, but Raine here had some car issues, and well, they won’t be able to leave till Blight fixes it... and I said Raine could stay with me in the guest house till their car is fixed. They blew a head g,asket and the safer option was replacing the whole engine,” Eda said, knowing her mom would likely ignore it.
“Now, Edalyn, it’s not shameful to be in a serious relationship, especially one serious enough to bring them to meet us,” Gwen said, bringing the pot of mashed potatoes over to the table.
“Mom!! Why do you assume that every person I bring home is my partner?” Eda asked, immediately regretting how she raised her voice. “And I have made it clear many times that I’m not looking for another relationship... especially since you have made it clear that you’ll never let me live down my divorce,” She said, sighing since she hated being reminded that she had a failed marriage and never dated after it.
“Don’t be silly, pumpkin, you say that, but love is finicky,” Gwen said, ignoring Eda’s glare.
“Gwen, just drop it for tonight, please?” Dell asked, knowing that he was often the voice of reason when his youngest and wife bickered.
Eda gave her dad a thankful look, glad that he was in her corner for the night at least. “See what I mean?” She whispered to Raine, earning a small nod.
Dinner went by fairly smoothly after the rough start, despite the tension between Eda and Gwen still being there, but nothing else was said. Raine helped clear the table after dinner, having easily opened up to her parents. Dell was a nice guy in their eyes, and Gwen... well, considering how she seemed to ignore what Eda said about them being stranded, she seemed dedicated on Eda finding a serious partner but at the same time to be one who held people’s actions over their heads.
“It was a pleasure to meet you both,” Raine said, shaking Dell’s hand, glad that her parents seemed to be okay with them being at dinner.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you as well, Raine; I’m sure we’ll see each other tomorrow at dinner as well,” Dell said, a sparkle in his eyes as he liked how polite and knowledgeable Raine was.
-_-_-_-_-
Eda was grumbling as she and Raine made it back to her place, her truck door slamming, which caused Raine to flinch. “Sorry...” Eda said, noticing that the loud noise caused the other to flinch. “I just can’t believe she had the audacity to assume we’ve been dating... like yeah, I’ve been divorced for over 20 years at this point, but it’s not like I’m required to find someone else. I’ve been fine single...” Eda said, entering her house. “I’ll be in my room working on stuff for my store if you need anything...” She said, slipping her shoes off. “My door will be open just let me know if you need anything, okay?” She asked, earning a nod from Raine.
“Actually, before you go back to your room, would it be possible to borrow a towel?” Raine asked, having noticed that they hadn’t packed one and all theirs were being taken to their moms and weren’t supposed to be there till the next morning. They did, however, have their shower stuff in their suitcase, The plan having been they would’ve taken a shower and used one of the towels at their moms.
“Yeah, it’s not a problem,” Eda said, not blaming them for wanting to take a shower while they were stranded. “Need any shampoo or conditioner? I have stuff you can use if needed,” She added, more than willing to let them use her stuff if they didn’t have any of theirs.
“I actually have my own... they were in my duffel bag,” Raine said as Eda grabbed a towel for them.
“Fair enough,” Eda said, handing them the towel. “If I don’t see you before either of us go to bed, I’ll see ya in the morning,” She said before retreating into her room to start on her paperwork before bed, leaving the door open a crack so King could enter and leave her room at will.
Raine took their shower quickly, forgoing their usual skincare routine due to not having any of their things for it and being exhausted, something that caught them off guard since they had taken a nap earlier but was also explainable due to everything that happened that day. They slipped on a pair of sweats and an oversized t-shirt before heading to their room, debating on whether to leave their door open a crack or not before deciding to, hoping that Owlbert would keep them company.

It's finally here, and I'm trying to update this twice a month to give me time to do other things (aka finish the upcoming chapters). Also... someone help me get in the zone with this AU... the brainrot has gone elsewhere.
Chapter Text
Raine woke to a mixture of the smell of something burning, Eda cursing, and the sound of a smoke detector going off. They yawned as they slipped their glasses on before making their way to the kitchen to see Eda opening a window to let smoke out before waving a dish towel near the blaring smoke detector. “Need help?” They asked, causing Eda to let out a startled yelp.
“Shit... I didn’t mean to wake you... I was gonna wake you once I finished my morning chores,” Eda said, finally succeeding in getting the smoke detector to shut up.
“It’s fine... if you want me to, I can make us breakfast and have it ready when you get done with your chores?” Raine offered, willing to cook for her.
“You sure? I’d kind of feel bad for making you cook since you’re my guest and all...” Eda began, throwing her burnt toast in the trash since not even King would touch it.
“Trust me... I wouldn’t have offered if I wasn’t sure about cooking,” Raine said, taking the dish towel from her. “Besides, it’s my way of thanking you for letting me stay,” They added, feeling their hand brush against hers.
“Sure... uh... pans are down there, and cooking utensils are by the stove,” Eda said, stepping back before heading to the front door to get ready to do her chores. She knew she’d have to stop by her store at some point that day, but that could happen later after her chores were done. “I’ll see ya in about an hour, I guess,” She said, before heading to her truck, taking a shaky breath as she tried to act as if Raine’s hand brushing against hers didn’t remind her of how many others did the same and ended up breaking up with her because of something she did. “You barely know them, Clawthorne...” She mumbled to herself. “Besides... this isn’t permanent... they’ll be gone in a few days, so you can’t get used to this either,” She said, trying to get her mind off of how sweet Raine already had been in the 24 hours she’s known them.
Raine began humming as they decided to see what Eda had, making pancakes and sausage links, wanting to only partially go all out. They swore off dating after having to break up with an ex, which they’d been fine single.
Raine waited till it’d been a half hour before starting to make breakfast, playing music on their phone, glad their cellular data worked okay enough for them to use it. They were finishing up cooking when Eda walked back in from her chores, hearing her swear under her breath. “Everything okay Eda?” They asked as they watched her take a seat at the small table.
“Yeah... had a close call out in the pasture where I nearly got kicked, but it didn’t happen,” Eda said, knowing that she would eat, check on her shop, and then show Raine around the ranch. “Was thinking, after we eat, I could show you around the ranch,” She said, pulling her phone out. “Well, after I check on my employees... make sure they haven’t burned down my store in the last two days,” She snorted, knowing that if it had burned down, she would’ve been the first to know.
“I wouldn’t be opposed to that, seeing as you did offer to last night,” Raine said, wondering what they would do. They were also nervous and struggled to sleep, not used to the quiet of the countryside.
“I’m gonna get some coffee going... you want any?” Eda asked as she stood up, earning a nod from the florist. “I’ll let you sweeten it up to your liking. That way I don’t make ya suffer with how sweet I make mine,” She teased, knowing that she did enjoy her coffee reasonably sweet, which threw people off considering she acted as if she drank her coffee with no sugar, which in her personal opinion was the wrong way to drink coffee. “Nothing beats coffee after doing chores... starts the day off right ya know?” She asked, heading to her coffee pot and began brewing coffee for the two of them before helping Raine set the table for breakfast. “Thanks for making breakfast... I normally don’t have much more than toast so it’s nice to have something more than that,” She admitted, ignoring Raine’s concerned look.
“If you want me to... I can make breakfast every morning till I leave,” Raine offered, letting her know they wouldn’t mind making breakfast.
“You don’t have to... but I won’t stop you,” Eda said, pouring them both coffee once it was ready. She sweetened hers to her liking, watching Raine sweeten theirs.
Breakfast was eaten in silence, mainly because Eda was trying to act as if she was trying not to get used to having another person in her home, especially one who was willing to cook breakfast. Raine took her silence as other things being on her mind, not blaming her since they were sure there were many things she had to worry about daily.
Eda stood up after eating, taking the plate and coffee cup to the sink. “Just set your dishes in the sink when you’re done, I’ll do them later,” She said before calling for King so the two could check in on her employees.
As Eda pulled to a stop a block from her shop, she took a deep breath, mentally preparing herself for whatever the young adults she hired had ready for her. She clipped on King’s leash, the pup whining at it. “I know you hate it, but it’s the law, and I don’t really need another fine,” She told the Coydog, hating it as much as he did. She walked down the street to her shop, glad that Katya and Derwin showed up early to get the store ready to open. She unlocked the door and watched the two young adults talk, waiting for opening time.
“Glad to see you kids haven’t burned the place down in the last couple of days,” Eda teased as she let King off his leash, the Coydog hurrying to his bed behind the register so he could take his post-morning chores nap there.
“C’mon Eda, you should expect that we wouldn’t burn down the best place other than the bar,” Derwin retorted, knowing she was only teasing him and Kaya.
“Yeah, besides, you’re a pretty cool boss, and there’s not many places that are hiring for what you pay without having to go to the suburbs,” Katya said, setting her phone on the counter. “Also, you didn’t stop by and say hi to us yesterday. We saw you pull into town,” She added, feigning hurt that Eda didn’t stop in the day before.
“Sorry about that... got sidetracked yesterday on my way into town,” Eda said, knowing these two would bug her for the details.
“Spill the deets, Owl Lady. You can’t say that and leave us hanging,” Katya said, knowing she wouldn’t give up till she got all the details.
“Alright, but no getting any ideas from what happened, okay?” Eda asked, earning matching nods from Derwin and Katya. “Okay, so on my way into town yesterday I found someone stranded on the side of the road. I gave them a ride into town and got them talking to Alador about getting their car fixed. However, that means they’re stranded till he fixes their car... so... they might be staying with me... till their car is fixed,” Eda said, summing up the day before for the two intrigued adults.
“Think we can meet them? Just want to talk to them,” Katya said, a mischievous look in her eyes.
“Kid, you better not give them the shovel talk cus there’s nothing romantic, and there will never be anything romantic. We’re acquaintances who will likely never speak again after they leave,” Eda said, saying that more for herself, knowing she shouldn’t get attached to the first good-looking person she sees. She knew that there wasn’t much of a point in even thinking of something happening between her and Raine; most that would possibly occur was they became friends, which she would be okay with. She could always use more friends around her age, especially since she really only had Darius, Alador (though that was an iffy friendship), Camila, and her sister Lilith.
“You say that, but you never know what might happen in the span of a few days,” Katya said, knowing she might text Luz to see if the teen would be willing to help her with a project.
“Eda’s right. This isn’t one of your fanfics, Kat. People don’t fall in love that easily,” Derwin said, instantly regretting it, knowing it would result in Katya reading him one of her fanfics later to prove her point.
“Besides, I have no clue what they’re into... like yeah, I’m Bi and all, but who knows about them... for all I know, they might be AroAce like Lily,” Eda said, knowing that she also didn’t want to face rejection even if she did have feelings. “Anyways, just wanted to make sure you two had everything under control. I’m just a call or text away if ya need me,” She said, changing the subject before having to wake up King. “Let’s get home, King, I think I know what we can teach Raine,” She said, the Coydog yawning as he stood up from his bed. He whined as Eda put his leash on, begrudgingly walking next to her back to the truck.
When Eda returned to her house, she found Raine with Owlbert on their lap, and she was not at all surprised her cat adored them, the feline liking anyone who would give him attention. “Hey, so I was thinking after I show ya around, I teach ya something fun, unless you don’t think you’re up to learning new tricks, you city slicker,” Eda teased, watching a determined look appear on Raine’s face.
“Is that a challenge? Cus that’s what it sounds like, and yeah, I’m down for learning new tricks,” Raine said, not realizing what they were getting themselves into until the end of their ranch tour, and they were face to face with a horse.
“Now, normally, I wouldn’t saddle up Eclipse, but I’m being nice and doing that for you cus, unfortunately, he hasn’t been ridden in a few years,” Eda said, giving the blue-roan Morgan a scratch behind the ears. “He’s my sister’s horse, but she moved off the ranch a few years ago and doesn’t visit often, so he doesn’t get ridden much,” She said as she headed over to her Strawberry-Roan Paint Horse. “He’s also very gentle, so you’ll be in good hooves... unlike Fireball here,” She said, chuckling as the mentioned horse pawed at the ground. “Now, see that step stool in the middle of the ring? Take the reigns and walk Eclipse so the saddle is in line with the stool,” She said, waiting to get on Fireball in case Raine needed help.
Raine took a shaky breath as they took the reigns and walked Eclipse over to the stool, the horse nickering softly as it gently nudged Raine, a chuckle leaving their lips. Eclipse stood still as Raine stepped onto the stool, Raine gulping as they tried to get on. Eventually, they got on... it took a few minutes, but they did it without help. “Shit, this is terrifying,” They whispered, their heart racing.
“You sure you’ve never ridden a horse? Cus even Luz struggled at first, granted she was like ten, but still, you’re impressive for a townie,” Eda said as she headed over, adjusting the stirrups so they were perfect for Raine’s shorter stature. “Alright, squeeze your legs or click your tongue to get him moving; either works,” She said, watching Raine click their tongue and get Eclipse walking. “Very good, you’re a natural Whispers,” She said, able to see their nervousness. “I’ll open the gate to the field before I mount Fireball. Eclipse will follow us with no problem, so no need to worry about getting lost,” Eda said before heading over to the gate and opening it. She mounted Fireball, and instantly, the horse started galloping into the field, causing Eclipse to start galloping afterward.
Raine let out a surprised yelp at the sudden increase in speed, hanging on as if their life depended on it.
“Pull back onto the reigns to slow him down!!” Eda shouted, easily staying on as Fireball tried to buck her off. She knew she made the right choice to have Raine learn with Eclipse and not Fireball, especially since Eclipse had always been the calmer of the two horses. Eda eventually managed to calm Fireball down, the Paint Horse huffing as he begrudgingly listened to her. She turned Fireball around and headed over to where Raine was slowly making their way over.
“That was terrifying,” Raine said, their voice shaking as Eda approached them.
“Yeah, but you did good for your first time. Eclipse will listen to ya and won’t do anything that you won’t tell him to do unless Fireball does something like that...” Eda said, leaning over and giving Eclipse an ear scratch. “How are you feeling about going at a trot? It’s gonna be faster than a walk but slower than that gallop we just had,” She asked, not wanting to push Raine and make them more nervous.
“I... I think I can handle that...” Raine said, knowing they could trust Eda to ensure they didn’t have to panic.
“Alright, like I said, if you need to slow him down, go ahead, but with this being a trot, you should be fine,” Eda said, easing Fireball into a trot, spotting Raine in her peripheral vision catching up to her. “Having fun, townie?” She asked, guessing they were based on their laughter. God... their laughter was adorable. “Ready to speed up?” She asked, earning a nod from them before she urged Fireball to go into a gallop, laughing loudly as she felt the wind in her air.
The duo raced across the pastures, the horses calling out to each other and the cattle before Eda and Raine slowed them to a walk near a lake. “Wow... this is so much fun,” Raine said, slightly out of breath as they rode next to Eda. Their lungs stung with every breath, but they didn’t care. They were having the time of their life.
“Glad you’re having fun,” Eda said, hearing a motor in the distance. She looked up and watched as Luz rode up to them on the Gator.
“I’m not interrupting anything, am I?” The teen shouted, stopping a fair distance from the horses to avoid spooking them.
“Nope, just Raine’s first time riding a horse. Despite being from the city, they’re a natural,” Eda said, quickly getting off Fireball before moving to help Raine dismount.
“Eda... if I got on without help, I can get off without help,” Raine said, determined not to require help.
“If ya say so,” Eda said, stepping back and deciding to see if their attempt to get off would be amusing. She watched as Raine struggled for a few minutes, succeeding in getting off.
“See, I-” Raine yelped as they slipped, Eda immediately covering her mouth to stifle her laughter as they landed in a mud puddle. Luz had fallen to the ground from how hard she was laughing, unable to stop no matter how hard she tried.
Eventually, Eda was able to compose herself, and she moved over to help Raine up, the other pouting at the laughter that was directed at them. “Aww... it’s just a little mud. We can wash your clothes when we get you back to the house... speaking of which, do you want to ride Eclipse back or take the Gator back? Luz can ride Eclipse and lead Fireball back to the corral, and I can drive us back,” Eda said, feeling a little bad for laughing.
“Hmm... maybe I’ll walk back,” Raine said, only teasing with their answer.
“Alright, I guess I’ll see ya back at the house,” Eda said, heading over to the farm vehicle and starting it before starting to drive away slowly, a smirk on her face when she heard Raine call out that they were joking about walking back. “You are such a tease,” She said as Raine got in the passenger seat. “I like that, though. Feels nice to have a laugh with someone around my age, ya know?”
Raine nodded their head, finding it nice to laugh with someone their age. As they returned to the house, Raine immediately headed to change into clean clothes before taking their muddied garments down to the laundry room in the basement, starting the washer.
“Want a sandwich? I was gonna make myself one for lunch,” Eda asked, earning a nod. “So... why were you leaving Achilles and heading to Latissa? If you don’t mind me asking, that is,” She asked, making King a sandwich as well.
“Heading home... grew up in Latissa actually. Just want to be closer to my moms... in case they need my help,” Raine said, avoiding Eda’s concerned look. “I’m also trying to move on from a failed relationship... thought I did, but recently she hired me to do flowers for her wedding... I guess I had some feelings left, and it was hard... especially since some of the flowers she chose were a smack in the face,” They admitted, tapping their fingers on the table.
“How recent was the break up with her?” Eda asked, curious if they were willing to talk about it, knowing she was ready to listen.
“Fifteen years ago... I guess I somehow told myself I was over her, and I truly thought I was... just when she could’ve gone to any other florist, it’s like she purposely chose me... as if it was her reminding me that what we had was over,” They said, knowing that it was weird to be hung up over a relationship from over a decade ago.
“I know that feeling,” Eda began, taking Raine’s hand. “When I was 20, I wanted out of the countryside and in the city... found my way to Las Vegas and got married while shitfaced. He was a nice guy... kind of... we both like antiques, and he ran a cryptid shack in Oregon, and I truly thought he was perfect... well, we divorced within three months,” She said, letting Raine know that she could relate to the feeling.
“I up and left him and came back home and tried dating, but after growing up with a majority of town as kids, you know early on that it’s not gonna work out. I eventually threw myself into my Antique Store and my work here on the ranch... till I met Luz at the county fair showing rabbits. It turns out her family had just moved to town the year before, and she took to the local 4H club like a fish to water. She begged her mom to let her help at the ranch once her rabbit died, and she’s been helping for about six years now,” Eda said, glad she found someone who made her smile, even if that someone was basically a daughter to her.
“She’s a happy kid... and I can tell she makes you happy as well,” Raine said, knowing that it was apparent the day before with how Eda looked out for the teen at the diner.
“That she does... she lives up to her name, that’s for sure,” Eda said, glad Raine was feeling slightly better. “Wow, what a surprisingly domestic moment. When will it be ruined?” Eda asked, grabbing her and Raine’s plates as she stood up.
“Eda!!!!”
“There it is,” Eda deadpanned, acting as if this was normal since she took up a parental role in Luz’s life.
Luz ran into the house out of breath, causing Eda to hurry to her with a glass of water.
“What’s wrong kid?” Eda asked, knowing that Luz rarely ran into the house like this.
“Fireball... loose... stall... busted....” Luz wheezed, trying to catch her breath.
Eda didn’t hesitate to run outside, not needing Luz to explain what happened. “Fuck, fuck, fuck,” She said, spotting Fireball loose in the pasture with the cattle. She ran over to Eclipse, who, despite not being saddled, was the first thing she could think of to catch her horse, urging the Gelding into a gallop without fear.
Luz and Raine weren’t far behind her, Luz heading to the Gator and motioning for Raine to get on. “C’mon!!! Vamos!! Vamos!!!” Luz shouted, not allowing Raine to sit down fully before slamming onto the gas. She didn’t care that this wasn’t a good impression regarding her driving, but this was technically an emergency, and Raine was roped into it.
Raine let out a yelp as they hung on for dear life, letting go once they buckled up. They watched as they and Luz got closer to Eda.
“Kid, try and turn him around!!!” Eda shouted when she noticed Luz and Raine both had followed. Luz gave her a thumbs up before speeding up so she could catch up to Fireball.
Raine watched as Luz let out a yell as she tried to get Fireball to turn, the horse spooking slightly before taking off towards the barn like she wanted to. “Whooo!!!” She said as she began chasing the horseback, spotting Eda slow Eclipse to a trot as the strawberry-roan horse reached the corral. “You good there, Raine?” She asked, looking over as Raine gave a shaky nod, their face slightly pale. “You sure? You look a little pale...” She noted, realizing she definitely scared them a little bit. She stopped near the corral and exited the Gator, running towards the angry horse.
Raine shakily got out once they composed themselves, still trying to calm their racing heart from the adrenaline. They kept a safe distance from Luz and Eda, knowing they would be no help due to their lack of experience.
Luz panted as she backed away from Fireball as he reared up. “Easy boy,” She said, keeping her voice calm. She and Eda kept their distance to avoid being within range of flying hooves. She shared a look with Eda, the older woman nodding her head before Luz slowly approached the horse with her hand held out in front of her, talking softly as she got closer. “Hey buddy... everything is okay... no doors are gonna hit ya,” She said, getting a little nervous the closer she got.
Eda watched Fireball in case she had to intervene and get Luz out of that situation. “She knows what she’s doing... so you can breathe easy,” She said, noticing Raine was holding their breath. She saw Fireball rear up and immediately rushed to push Luz out of the way, hooves barely missing the two of them. “You okay?” She asked, immediately looking for injuries on the teen.
“Si, estoy bien...” Luz mumbled, rubbing her shoulder as she stood up. “Though... just will be sore for a bit,” Luz said, standing up. “What about you... are you...” Luz trailed off, her gaze going to Eda’s bad shoulder, knowing that her godmother would likely brush it off as not to worry anyone.
“I’m fine... you gotta remember that I’ve been doing this before you were born, you brat,” Eda said, standing up and ignoring the pain in her shoulder. She turned around and looked at Fireball. “You sir, are a pain in my ass today,” She said, playfully glaring at the large equine who had retreated to the far side of the corral, parallel of the gate. She made her way slowly over to him, leaving Luz near Raine.
“Are you okay? That was a hard fall,” Raine said, hesitating before leading Luz back to the Gator. They knew she was probably used to it, but they were just worried, considering that they didn’t expect this to happen.
“Yeah... I’m fine... I’m used to getting hurt, as bad as that sounds... but that’s Ranch life. It’s painful, but you get used to it,” Luz said, not wanting to see if her shoulder would bruise. She knew Eda would insist she stayed the night to make sure Luz was actually okay.
“Luz, it’s okay to admit when you’re in pain... and I get that you want to appear tough for Eda, but I doubt she’d care if you actually told her that you are hurt,” Raine said, letting her know that she could always talk to them. “Besides, that looked like a hard fall... for both you and Eda,” They pointed out as Luz let out a sigh.
“Yeah... it was...” Luz said, rubbing her hurt shoulder. “It’ll be fine though... it’ll be sore and likely bruise, but rather that than actually have been kicked, ya know?” Luz asked, knowing that she knew the risks of helping out with large mammals such as cows and horses. “If anything... it’s Eda you have to worry about... she’ll get kicked and act as if she wasn’t when in reality she’s hurting,” She said, letting Raine know that Eda was so stubborn that she would ignore her own pain as not to worry anyone.
Eda jogged over to the Gator once she got Fireball in a stall that didn’t have a busted lock, adding that to her to-do list for when she had the time and energy. “Alright, the chaotic gremlin has been contained. Lets get to the house, and I’ll get an ice pack for Luz,” Eda said, brushing off the pain in her shoulder.
“Alright... should I text Mami and let her know I’ll be staying the night since I know you won’t let me go home after getting hurt?” Luz asked, earning a nod from Eda.
“Yeah... you know Cami would murder me if you didn’t let her know where you were,” Eda said, knowing that she and Camila were able to co-parent the best they could... especially since Luz begged Camila to let Eda be her godmother after Luz started helping out a the ranch.
“Are we going to the main house for dinner after chores tonight or no?” Luz asked, sending her mom a text saying she was staying at Eda’s for the night.
“After my mom’s behavior last night? Nope, I might not go to the main house for the whole week,” Eda said, knowing that she was acting childish by refusing to join her parents.
“So... what’s for dinner then... cus I’m getting hungry...” Luz said, having not eaten lunch.
“No clue cus that’s 3 hours from now,” Eda said, giving Luz a suspicious look. “Kid, did you have lunch?” Eda asked, noticing Luz looked away at the question.
“No...” The teen said, feeling the urge to start running when Eda gave her a stern look. “I don’t feel safe...” Luz said, sprinting away when Eda started chasing her, chewing her out for not eating.
“I swear to god, child, I thought you knew more than anyone here that it’s important to eat, considering the amount of work we do,” Eda said, chewing the teen out as she tried to catch Luz so she could feed the teen.
Raine stood and watched them, having a feeling this was something they’d get used to. They sat on the Gator, having a feeling that they’d be at it for a while.

Chapter Text
Eda groaned as she watched the older man approach her, knowing it was just her luck to run into the son of a bitch while on Main Street. “Mayor Wittebane,” She said curtly, hiding her disgust from her voice.
“Ahhh, Ms. Clawthorne, just the person I wanted to see,” Raine shivered at the voice, it reminding them of those movies where the bad guy had a cat.
“What do you want? Cus I don’t have the time to chit chat today, Mr. Mayor, I’m running late on opening my shop,” Eda said, faking a smile despite her glare.
“Just want to chat,” The Mayor said, ignoring the fact that she didn’t have time to chat. “How are your parents, Edalyn, still going strong and keeping the Ranch in business?” He asked, ignoring Raine’s presence (which they were glad for).
“Cut to chase, Phillip. We both know you want to buy out the ranch and turn it into a new housing development, and our answer is the same: never in a million years,” Eda spat, her outburst causing Raine to step back slightly. “Mom and Dad are more likely to hand it down to me than sell it to a fuckwad like you,” She snarled, losing her temper at him.
“Mr. Mayor, I believe we don’t have time for a polite chat with Ms. Clawthorne. We do have that meeting with Mrs. Blight to discuss matters that are more important than a piece of land with cows on it,” Eda turned around at the sound of the voice, glaring at the short woman that was behind her and Raine.
“Of course, Kiki. What would I do without you, my loyal secretary?” Philip asked, making his way past Eda and Raine to his secretary. “Do take care, Edayln, and welcome to Bonesburough, Mx. Whispers,” He said, Raine’s eyes widening since they hadn’t told him their name, let alone had spoken at all.
Eda watched the two walk away, flipping them the bird as she mumbled a string of swears under her breath.
“I’m guessing your family doesn’t get along with the mayor at all... do they?” Raine asked, earning a nod.
“He’s a prick who knows that the ranch is worth a lot. My family is one of those old names in the area. Long story short, my many times great grandma Evelyn settled down on the original 10 acres, which eventually expanded to the 400 acres we have today. I’m very distantly related to the mayor because she married his ancestor, Caleb Wittebane,” Eda began, knowing it was necessary background information.
“Anyways, ever since he became mayor 20 years ago, no one has bothered running against him, and those who did always ended up dropping out for one reason or another. He’s been insistent on buying all the land the ranch is on for two to three times its worth, so upwards of 13 and a half million for land that’s only worth 4.5 million,” Eda said, knowing that they easily made a quarter of what their land was worth due from cattle. “Besides, he’s not the biggest threat. It’s his secretary Kiki that you have to look out for. She’s always butting her into your business, and based on the fact that Phillip knew your name and to use Mx, that means she was in the diner the first day you came into town,” She added, having hoped that Raine would’ve been safe from the short woman’s stalkerish tendencies.
“Wow, sounds like it’s a personal thing. He may think he’s entitled to the land,” Raine said, mulling over the information Eda gave them.
“You might not be wrong... but let’s drop the subject cus here we are, welcome to Owl Beast Antiques,” Eda said, proud of her little shop that was often the only thing that brought tourists to town. She unlocked the door and motioned for Raine to enter ahead of her, turning the closed sign to open.
Raine looked around in awe, knowing this was way more chaotic than her basement. “Wow...” They breathed, spotting a theme of sorts within the plethora of items.
“Some may call me shady or a con woman, but most call me the Owl Lady. Everything has a home here till another finds it to claim. Basically, one man’s trash is another’s treasure,” Eda said, smirking at how in awe Raine was at her store.
“This is amazing,” They breathed, spotting King run behind the counter.
“Hey, Owl Lady, you beat us here,” Raine turned at the new voice, spotting a couple of young adults that they guessed were the employees Eda had mentioned. “And you brought your friend,” The young woman said, walking past Raine and going behind the counter.
“Yeah, I know I’m early, Katya, but I figured that since they were gonna talk to Blight later, it was best if they came with me,” Eda said, ruffling Derwin’s hair as she walked past him. “Anyways, Raine, meet Derwin and Katya, my two pain in the asses,” Eda said, earning playful shouts of offense. “They usually handle the buying and selling of stuff while I do the paperwork,” She explained, though she knew that Raine had guessed that.
“Nice to meet ya, Raine; Eda mentioned she had a guest staying with her when she dropped by,” Derwin said, holding his hand out to Raine.
Raine shook Derwin’s hand, glad that Eda’s employees seemed nice. “It’s nice to meet you as well... both of you,” They said, knowing that it felt nice to get to know others while they were there.
“So Raine... what do you do with your life? I mean, you know Eda has the shop and helps on the ranch, and that us two work for Eda,” Katya said, trying to find out all she could about them before setting her plan in action, having received a text from Luz the night before about the “flirting” that’s been happening.
“I’m a florist, actually; used to run my own flower store about an hour away from here,” Raine said, figuring it wasn’t a big deal. “I also used to teach music lessons till about five years ago on the side but stopped as I got busier with floral arrangements,” Raine said, knowing that they missed taking on students as they rarely had time to play.
“Ooohh... you should know, Derwin and myself play at the bar on Friday nights. Maybe if you’re still in town, you can watch our show of sorts. we got a third member, but she doesn’t work here... she drives to Lattisa for her overnight stocking job, so she’s dead to the world right now,” Katya said, an idea forming in her mind to try and get Raine to stay a tad longer.
“Katya, I know that look, and I’m saying no to whatever idea you’re forming,” Derwin said, stopping his step-sister from causing chaos.
“Look, brother dearest, why would you assume I’d be plotting something?” Katya asked, acting offended.
“Cus you, little sister, are always plotting something,” Derwin said, stooping to her level, not caring that he did so. “Besides... you know very well that it won’t work out the way you want it to,” He added, watching Katya huff.
“Alright, you two, enough bickering,” Eda said, deciding to step in and break up their skirmish. “Raine, Alador should be opening up his shop if you want to head down and see how it’s going regarding your car. I’ve got a few things I need to handle here that might take me a bit longer than normal, so just come back over when you’re done talking to him,” Eda said, earning a nod from the timid adult. She headed to her office in the back, leaving Derwin and Katya in charge of the front.
Katya waited for Raine and Eda to leave the main floor before quickly grabbing her phone and messaging Luz in Discord to ask a few questions about Raine.

Katya quickly closed her discord when she heard a door open, knowing that technically she shouldn’t be on her phone, despite the fact Eda never really enforced it, seeing as how slow they usually were.
“Who are you talking to, Kat?” Derwin asked, having a bad feeling she was plotting something behind his pack.
“Uhh... just Luz,” Katya said, figuring she shouldn’t lie about who she was talking about. “We were discussing the Yoga Night that’s happening on Thursday cus I want to show her my fic that I’m working on,” She said, praying he bought her lie.
Derwin didn’t buy it, instead deciding he didn’t want to be dragged into whatever scheme those two thought of. “Fair enough, just remember, though, no scheming,” He said, knowing he’d probably be dragged into whatever they were planning. She was good at that, especially since she’s been doing that ever since their parents got together when he was eight and she was six.
“Don’t you worry, Derry; I won’t come up with a scheme to set Eda and Raine up, I promise,” Katya said, flashing a smile as she used the nickname she gave him when they were kids.
“That’s not my name, Kat,” Derwin said, having always hated that nickname but tolerated it from her. “Besides... you know how Eda is regarding commitment...” He said softly, knowing that they both really shouldn’t be talking about that.
“I know... I want her to be happy... you know?” Katya asked, knowing that Eda hid a lot of turmoil behind a mask of smiles and laughter.
“I know you do... but we’ll make do by making her happy ourselves, just like we have since we were kids, and just like Luz has now,” Derwin said, knowing that he also wanted the older woman to be happy.
The two young adults decided to drop the subject as Raine walked back in, looking a bit dejected. “Yikes... guessing it wasn’t good news from Alador, was it?” Katya asked, quickly putting on a sympathetic look. She felt terrible for faking it, but she was determined to help Luz get Eda and Raine to be close. Sure, she thought they’d make a cute couple, but she knew that making two people fall in love would be much more complicated than when she wrote her fanfiction, but she could at least lead them towards something.
“Nope... turns out that it might take a bit for the engine to get here, so I’m kind of stranded till then,” Raine said, leaning against the counter.
“Raine, go ahead and take the chair behind the counter; Katya isn’t supposed to be sitting when clocked in, and Eda probably isn’t going to be done for a while,” Derwin said as Katya grumbled about him being a stickler for rules considering Eda never really enforced them and didn’t care that Katya would sit when she was scheduled at the register.
Eda walked out of her office after a few minutes, a low growling noise coming from her. “Who’s willing to get me some coffee from the diner?” Eda asked, trying to decide between Katya and Derwin to make her coffee run. “Eeny meeny miney... Katya,” She said, earning a groan from the young woman.
“How come you always pick on me?” Katya asked, watching as her step-brother sighed in relief of not being picked, as usual.
“Cus you make it too easy to rile up. Besides, last time Derwin got my coffee, he started nerding out with Blondie over something, and my coffee was ice cold by the time he got back,” Eda said, flinching as she remembered how he kept apologizing and promising not to forget next time. “Anyways... I’m guessing it’s been quiet, right? She asked, earning nods.
Luz panted as she ran towards Eda’s shop, having been bugging Hunter at his work when she had a question regarding the singular goat on the ranch. “Eda!!!!” She shouted as she ran inside, running into Katya and causing both of them to fall.
“I jinxed it...” Eda groaned, heading over to Luz and Katya to help them both. “Okay, Katya, just make the coffee run quick. I’m gonna need it after whatever Luz needs,” Eda said, feeling like it was too early to deal with Luz’s questions. “Alright, kiddo, what has you running in this early?” Eda asked, more than ready to answer whatever questions Luz had. It was normal for her.
“How did Mike Socks get his name? Cus Hunter doesn’t believe me that his name is really Mike Socks,” Luz said, knowing her brother never really bothered to hang out at the ranch and get to know the animals.
Eda sighed, knowing that she had to tell Luz the story or else she’d never get a moment of peace again. “You really want to know how that grumpy pants got his name?” She asked, earning a nod from the teen. “Alright, Lily named him about... ten years ago when Dad first brought him home, so before you and your family moved here. She was still living at home cus well... she was in the middle of a career change,” Eda began, sighing since she and Lilith hadn’t been close ever since they were teens, their relationship rocky ever since she divorced Stan.
“She was upset that I had a pet, that being Hooty... granted, that’s because she was stuck caring for him while I was in Oregon. She was insistent on the little goat being hers to the point she put him in sweaters and bottle-fed him as if he were her child... it’s creepy now that I think about it,” Eda continued, knowing that the sooner she finished the story, the sooner Luz would go and do whatever it was she did when not helping her folks.
“I think it’s cute considering Lilith is all... shit... that does sound creepy... like an Amish Soccer Mom almost,” Luz said, shuddering at the realization that her aunt was... odd.
Eda snorted at how Luz described her sister, finding it hilarious. “I’m totally calling her that next time I see her,” Eda said, knowing that while her sister wouldn’t appreciate it, it would at least amuse her seeing her sister be all grumpy over it.
“But that doesn’t explain why she named him Mike Socks,” Luz said, pointing out that she only got part of the story she wanted.
“It’s Lily. She’s always had a weird naming thing... take Eclipse, for example. She wanted to name him Lasagna, of all things,” Eda began wondering if Luz saw where she was going with this story. “I technically named Eclipse so he wouldn’t have a ridiculous ass name like Lasagna,” She said, taking advantage of her sister not being there so she could spread harmless lies.
“Okay, as much as I love story time... I think I should get Eda’s coffee... you want anything, Raine?” Katya asked, figuring she’d ask, especially if she and Luz were to plan on how they would get the two adults together.
“Oh, uh... sure,” Raine said, having been drawn in by Eda’s story, realizing that they’d be able to get to know more about her through them. “I’ll have the same as Eda,” They said, not wanting to give her two different drinks to remember.
“Get them something super sweet, Katya. I mistook their coffee for mine this morning, and... well, they like it sickly sweet,” Eda said, picking on her temporary roommate.
“Got it, Owl Lady, your usual and a sickly sweet for Raine,” Katya said before heading towards the *door, Luz not far behind her.
“Thanks for the story, Eda; now to rub it Hunter’s face that I was right,” Luz said before petting King. “I’ll tell Mami that you said hi and that she needs to come out to the ranch sometime soon.” The teen added before exiting the antique shop, she and Katya immediately started their planning to get Eda and Raine together.
-_-_-
Luz and Katya waited till they were outside before immediately sharing a look. “There’s definitely a connection,” Luz began, letting Katya know everything she’s noticed regarding Eda’s and Raine’s blossoming relationship. “Like this morning at breakfast, Raine was the one who cooked, and you know Eda normally eats toast for breakfast. “
“Interesting... wait... Eda eats breakfast?” Katya asked, wondering because she’d never really seen the older woman eat outside of when there was a meet-up at the ranch.
“Yeah, why wouldn’t she? She also drinks lots of coffee, but she told me that Raine offered to cook breakfast while they’re stranded, and their food is amazing,” Luz gushed, having been told to slow down and actually chew her food that morning. “Like, you know my mom’s cooking is amazing,” She continued, earning a nod from the young adult. “But Raine’s cooking is on a whole new level. Who knew that using half and half instead of milk made it better?” Luz said as she and Katya entered the diner where Hunter worked.
“Hey, Sunshine,” Katya said as she and Luz approached the counter. “Eda needs her regular and a sickly sweet,” She teased, earning a grumble from Hunter at the nickname.
“On it,” Hunter said, plastering a fake smile to cover up his annoyance. “So, Luz, did Lilith really name that cranky old goat Mike Socks?” He asked, doubting that his adoptive aunt would give a goat a name like that.
“You know Eda doesn’t lie about stories like this, bro,” Luz said, sitting at the counter. “Anyways... think you can get me a slice of Chocolate Silk... please?” She asked, knowing he could care less about keeping dairy away from her. “Put it on Eda’s tab with the coffees... and can I get it to go?” She asked, earning a growl from her brother. “Thanks, Street Rat,” She teased, causing Hunter to inhale deeply.
“That’s not my name, Pipsqueak,” Hunter shot back, handing Katya the two coffees before getting his sister the slice she wanted. “Are you gonna be home tonight? Mom wants to know so she can set your place at the table,” He asked, watching as Luz didn’t hesitate to start eating her slice of pie.
“Yeah, I’ll be back after I help with tonight’s chores, especially since Mama did say she was making Maduros and rice tonight, and you know very well how much I love this meal,” Luz said before leaving with Katya and heading back to Eda’s antique shop.
“So... why do you call Hunter a Street Rat?” Katya asked, curious cus she’d known the siblings for a long time but was always confused as to why Hunter was called a Street Rat.
“Well.. it was something that dad called Hunter cus... he was abandoned on our doorstep back in Gravesfield when mama was expecting Vee and me,” Luz began, knowing that it was obvious that he was adopted. “Like, it was apparently a nasty storm, and Mom and Dad knew that they had to take him in... well, they chose to take him cus that’s who they are. There were a lot of social worker visits before they were able to adopt him officially but he was a Noceda from day one and he was offically one by the time he was six, just before dad got sick...” Luz trailed off, sniffling slightly as she thought of how her dad got sick before he passed.
“Luz...” Katya said softly, having not known that the teen lost her dad young.
“He called Hunter his ‘Little Street Rat’ and well... it stuck. And despite Mom trying to stop it from catching on, well it caught on and everyone knew Manny and his little street rat, hell when his adoption was finalized, most of the neighborhood was there to celebrate it,” Luz said, knowing that Hunter was always her brother, adopted or not.
“You know... I knew he was adopted but hearing this... he’s had it rough,” Katya said, having always found a reason to pick on the grumpy young adult. “Explains a lot on why he’s grumpy... he built walls around him, not wanting to seem weak,” She added, feeling bad that she picked on him a lot.
“He took dad’s passing hard... well all three of us did but he took it the hardest cus he doesnt remember a life before us... all he had was a note with his name and his Cardinal plush,” Luz said, knowing that Hunter wasn’t thrilled at becoming an older brother so soon after finding their parents.
Katya wasn’t sure what to say so the two walked into the Antique Store in silence, Luz heading to Eda’s office, needing to be alone.
“What’s got her all blue?” Eda asked, wondering why Luz was upset.
“We were talking about Hunter, and... well... it brought up memories of Luz’s dad,” Katya said, knowing that Eda would check *on the teen in a bit.
“That’ll do it,” Eda said, knowing that Luz always got upset talking about Manny despite having never met him. “I’ll give her a moment... but thanks for the coffee run; you know I appreciate the help,” Eda said, ruffling Katya’s hair.
“I know you do, Eda,” Katya said, knowing that Eda really meant no harm when she picked on her. “Oh, your coffee...” She said as she handed Eda and Raine their respective coffees.
“Thanks, Katya,” Raine said, giving her a soft smile before taking a sip of their coffee and relaxing. Coffee had always been somewhat comforting to them, especially when they were stressed out about their car. They had known for a while that it was a matter of time before there was a major issue with their car but felt like they didn’t have the time to even look for something newer than their current vehicle (which was close to the 30-year mark and parts were getting harder to find but they didn’t want to say goodbye to their first car).
“No problem, you are the Owl Lady’s friend and guest; therefore, you’re also my friend,” Katya said, heading behind the register, slipping her phone out of her pocket, and texting someone.
“How did you get the nickname of the Owl Lady anyway?” Raine asked, looking over at Eda, who was also enjoying her coffee.
“This is a good story,” Derwin chuckled, knowing very well Eda would require his and Katya’s help telling the truth.
Eda gave a mischievous look at the question, glad they seemed to remember that from earlier. “I’m just mysterious and wise like an owl, Buttercup,” Eda said, a chuckle leaving her lips as she noticed Raine’s cheeks heated up slightly at the new nickname.
“It’s cus she’s obsessed with shiny objects... and doesn’t like mornings,” Katya said, laughing as Eda shot a glare at her. “I’m not wrong, boss. You are not a morning person, and you know that,” She said before turning her attention back to her phone.
“She’s right about you not being a morning person, Eda,” Derwin began, not teasing her as much as Katya was. “Besides, we’ve seen you before you’ve had your coffee a few times, and it’s terrifying.”
Eda was about to say something before realizing Derwin was right. She could be a little intense before her coffee, and usually, if she didn’t have her coffee before coming in, it was because she decided to ignore her alarm in the morning. “I should be offended... but you’re both sadly right...” She said, shaking her head at the siblings. “Anyways... you two got a handle on things? Was thinking I’d take Raine back to the Ranch and then come back and check on Luz,” Eda said as she stood up, frowning slightly when she heard a familiar bark that she knew that she didn’t bring to town. “Dad? What are doing here?” Eda asked, picking up King as he ran towards her.
“Well, someone wasn’t happy you left him behind,” Dell said with a chuckle, watching the Coydog relish in his owner’s attention. “That, and it’s been a while since I’ve seen the shop. Business should be picking up soon, right?” He asked, earning a nod from Eda.
“Y-yeah, it should be picking up next month. You know June is slow because school getting out a couple of weeks ago,” Eda said, a little caught off guard.
“Hey, Mr. C, how’s it going?” Katya asked, looking up from her phone, knowing she didn’t get to see Dell all that often, usually only on Thursdays when a group of them met up in the barn.
“It’s going good, Katya, and please call me Dell; you’ve known me for years,” The older man said with a chuckle. “But King came to the main house whining, so I figured you left him behind today, so after getting some attention from your mom and me, I figured I’d bring him here cus you usually bring him to work with you,” Dell said, having noticed that Eda had been leaving King on the Ranch more often when she heads into town.
“Yeah, he’s been acting up a bit with having Raine stay, and I don’t want to reward that behavior, you know?” Eda asked, knowing that King was used to being the only one who got her full attention 90% of the time. “I was about to take Raine back anyways... Blight won’t get the engine he needs for their car for a few days, so I figured that I could take Raine back to the guest house. That way, they can call their folks and keep them updated,” Eda said, really just wanting to talk to them alone and ask how they were doing because, no doubt, learning you’d be stranded even longer was something that would wear you down.
“I can take them back to the Ranch, Pumpkin,” Dell said, knowing that their daughter was just looking out for her new friend. “Besides, I’d like to get to know them a little more, seeing as we didn’t talk much at dinner the other night,” He added, failing to notice Eda’s concerned look. “C’mon, Kid, you can join Gwen and I for lunch today,” Dell said, motioning for Raine to follow him out. He waved goodbye to his daughter and her employees before heading out to his truck with Raine.
“Ooohhh... someone’s getting the talk,” Katya said, stifling a chuckle as Eda shot her a warning glare. “C’mon Owl Lady, you know I’m not wrong cus dads only want to be alone with your friends for one reason, and it’s to give them the whole shotgun talk,” She said, trying to defend herself.
“As much as I hate to admit it... you might be right... for fucks sake, this is gonna be a long ass week... for both me and Raine,” Eda groaned, knowing that she’d have to make it up to Raine for allowing them to suffer through whatever her dad threatened. “Friday can’t arrive quick enough...”
Chapter 4: Important Announcement
Chapter Text
Not an update but an announcement… so when I started this AU i thought i knew where i was wanting to go but recently I realized I wasn’t happy with how this is going… especially in regards to King. I’m not a huge fan of King being a dog or cat in Human AUs (I’m just super picky meaning King will stay a Lab in my human AU one shot series) and prefer him being human due to him being a titan. What I’m say is, I’m abandoning this version of my Ranch AU and doing a whole ass rewrite and make it something I can be proud of (quality and storywise). I will keep most things the same but there’s going to be changes that I hope make it a better experience for everyone. Because of this, I’m orphaning this work and will be back with something I can be proud of (especially since this was my first big fic since middle school).
