Work Header

and besides, it's raining somewhere

Summary:

The last thing Simon expected was Jess' ring to talk to him while she was in the shower.

Even less was for the ring to tell him he was in love with her.

Notes:

Hey guys! This is the first work I'm posting on this account (and the first thing I've written since like middle school) so sorry if anything reads kind of clunky as I'm a bit out of practice for now haha

The title of this fic comes from a line in the poem "It's Raining In Love" by Richard Brautigan. The scenario here doesn't match up exactly with the one in the poem, but I felt like they had similar vibes in the awkwardness and general foot-in-mouth disease that the main characters have in each work.

So anyways I really, really hope you guys enjoy this!!! I'm totally obsessed with this relationship and am super excited to start adding to the (unfairly small) simonjess tag here on ao3 <3

(also a note on grammar: I use a single apostrophe in this fic to denote possession in terms of things owned by Jessica, which technically isn't grammatically correct, but is done to avoid the monstrosity that is the word Jess's appearing every other sentence. So if there are any English teachers out there: that is why.)

Rated teen for a lil bit of language at the end btw

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Simon was sitting on Jess’ bed when her ring spoke to him. At the time, Jess was in her bathroom, taking a shower as she sprayed off the mysterious alien goop that (for once) seemed to only hit her. They had been fighting for a few hours (attempted alien incursion, the usual fare) and were exhausted—Simon was honestly tempted to take a nap on Jess’ bed—and so they had decided to go and get some food after the fight. But Jess was busy being covered in alien goo, ergo, the aforementioned shower.

That didn’t explain the ring.

You see, Jess had asked him to watch her ring for her while she was in the shower. This was something that was a little peculiar to Simon, as he made a point to never, ever, take his ring off, lest it go missing or have something happen to it. (Honestly, there was a small part of him that was still amazed when he saw it on his finger every morning). But apparently today Jess needed him to watch it, as Sara had told her some story about a friend that had lost her wedding ring down the sink, and now Jess’ anxiety was freaking out about the same thing happening to her ring, despite the fact that her shower didn’t even have a drain big enough for it to fall down to begin with.

Anyways, this was all a very long-winded way to explain why Simon had been sitting on the edge of Jess’ bed for the past five minutes, mind blank as he stared at the wall and tried to tune out the sound of the water in the bathroom next door. This made him wholly unprepared for when Jess’ ring decided to strike.

So, when are you going to tell her you love her? ” Jess’ ring asked.

Simon froze.

“Uh… what?”

Jessica. You love her. When are you going to say something?

“I- I don’t love her!” Simon defended, “I mean I appreciate her and all, she’s like my best friend and actually a pretty cool person even though I didn’t like her at first and we’re cool now and everything, So like I guess I love her as like a friend or whatever, but I’m not like in love with her or anything, that’d be crazy!”

There was a pause.

You think someone would have to be crazy to love Jess? ” the ring asked.

“Whoa!” Simon said, “that is not what I said. Anyone, and I mean anyone, would be lucky to date Jess. She’s incredible. People don’t understand how strong she’s been to get through everything, with what happened to her friends and her anxiety and whatnot. She went from being scared to leave the house to fighting evil aliens for the sake of the planet! She’s brave, and funny, and nice to be around, so yeah. Anybody would be lucky to date Jess.”

The ring made a noise suspiciously close to a scoff. “You are anybody.

“I don’t- I’m not- I just don’t see her that way!”

“That statement is categorically false.” said Simon’s ring, who had, like the traitorous ass it was, decided that this was the perfect time to join the conversation.

“Since when do you talk?!” he exclaimed.

His ring ignored him and kept speaking. “Common human biological and behavioral signifiers indicate that you are indeed sexually attracted to Lantern Cruz. Signs such as-

Simon’s cheeks burned.

“Whoa, what the hell, ring! You can’t just say stuff like that!”

It is true. On average, your heart rate accelerates by ten beats per minute each time we encounter Lantern Cruz, and that number increases significantly when she does something in the range of human mating behavior. Physical symptoms of attraction, such as sweaty palms, difficulty speaking coherently, and the idiomatic sensation of ‘butterflies in one’s stomach’ also occur when the topic of a romantic relationship between you and Lantern Cruz is brought up .”

“What- that- that is not true!”

As demonstrated by the current situation.”

Simon stood up, pacing now.

“I don’t know what you two think you’re going on about, ganging up on me and talking about me being in love with Jess, which isn’t even relevant because I do not like her that way at all, I mean honestly, Jess is like the last person I’d ever date, I don’t even find her attractive-

Someone cleared their throat from behind him. He froze, and turned to reveal Jess standing in the doorway in her robe, hair wrapped in a wet towel.

“Damn, tell me how you really feel.” she joked halfheartedly.

Fuck.

“Wait, Jess, I-”

She shrugged him off and walked by the bed, picking up her ring and the hair dryer she had left out earlier.

“It’s fine Simon, I wouldn’t want to date you either.”

She turned the dryer on. It was worse than silence.
