Between My Wings You Are Safe

Summary:

Welcome to my fanfic, where I will proceed to be delulu and pretend Adam doesn't die so I can have my ship.

Chapter 1: Failed Extermination

Chapter Text

"So, you think you can come down here and fuck with my daughter's project? Well you're wrong. Cause I'm going to fuck you!" Lucifer growls, his tail lashing in anger.

"Uh Dad, its actually 'fuck you up.'" Charlie corrects from her position on his shoulder, trying not to laugh at her dad's mistake.

"That's what I said, right?" Lucifer asks, turning to look at his beautiful demonic daughter.

"Sure, let's go with that." She replies, not wanting to forget about the matter at hand. Which was the fact that the First Man, Adam, was currently glaring daggers at the King of Hell and his daughter.

"Lucifer, finally decided to show up?" Adam chuckles, gesturing to the damage that littered the hellish landscape.

"We had a deal! All Hell born are pardoned from an Exorcist blade, so why are you trying to kill my daughter and her friends?"

"Because redemption will never be possible!!" Adam spats, "Your daughter is a delusional dreamer like you, and you both deserve death!"

"For being delusional or being a dreamer?" Lucifer asks, mildly intrigued to see how Adam will respond.

"For both!" He cries, "You were an angel and you fell for your dreams, you are why humanity is so fucked."

"Hate to break it to you dude, but if you claim to be 'the Dickmaster' then that means every human is a descent of yours, so actually, you're the reason humanity is fucked." Lucifer just grins at Adam. Vaggie lands in the background, back from her fight with Lute and was helping Husk and Angel fight.

"Just shut up already!!" Adam yells.

"OK!" Lucifer chirps and he zooms towards Adam, knocking the First Man onto the ground. He punches his face in, using it as a punching bag to release some of the anger towards Heaven that he has kept bottled up all these years.

"Dad, stop!" Charlie cries, feeling pity for the bested First Man. "Show him mercy."

"Like him and Heaven did for me?? No!! He deserves to die!!"

Lute had managed to break her arm off, and was now circling the battlefield, looking for an easy target. She spots Vaggie, and dives toward her, knocking her off her feet.

While everyone is preoccupied, Adam sits up. He manages to stand, painfully, but he's up. He starts stalking towards Lucifer, intent on finishing what Sera and the others should have finished long ago.

These fucking assholes, how dare they think that redemption is possible, I'm going to fucki-

His internal monologue is cut off by a sharp pain in his abdomen. Adam looks down at his gut to see a silver blade sticking out, golden blood already pouring out of the wound. Everyone stares at the knife with a horrified expression. That is, everyone but Vaggie, who looked so happy you could have assumed Christmas had come early.

Adam hears his lieutenant, Lute, cry out as he collapses to the ground, face first. Niffty stands on top of his crumpled form, and starts stabbing and maniacally laughing. Lute rushes over to him, knocking Niffty off of his back with a wing. She turns him face up, tears in her eyes.

"Adam, sir, don't leave me!" She cries, cradling his head with a wing and trying to stop the external hemorrhaging with her remaining arm.

Adam struggles to take a breath, the knife having nicked his left lung, giving him a hemopneumothorax. Adam smiles up at her as his eyes close.

"NOOOOOO!" Lute wails, tears freely streaming down her face.

"ALL EXORCISTS, RETREAT." She calls out as she maneuvers Adam's body onto her back so that she can fly.

"Hang in there sir, we are going to get you back up to Heaven so you can be fixed up."

Charlie and the gang watch as Lute and the other exorcists flee back up to heaven, and Charlie finally collapses.

Chapter 2: Please Save Him

Summary:

TBA

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Adam was way heavier than Lute had expected. By the time she manages to get him to Angelic Aid, she feels like she is going to pass out.

Thankfully, she had sent a few Exorcists ahead to warn the hospital that she would be bringing an emergent patient in. She was ushered in through a secret entrance, because Sera still felt that they shouldn't openly display their activities.

A blue owl angel pointed to a cot and told Lute to set Adam down. At this point, Adam was barely breathing and had lost about 1/4 of his blood volume. Immediately Adam is surrounded by angels and a bunch of medical equipment. They quickly remove his clothes to expose the wound and Lute has to hold back her vomit.

The stab wound looked way worse without his robes in the way. The bleeding had seemed to have stopped, but there were a few loops of bowel poking through the hole.

"That's not supposed to be there." Lute says, stating the obvious. "Fix it."

A different angel, a blue and red wolf angel guides a disgruntled Lute out of the room. He takes her to a waiting room and explains the severity of Adam's wounds.

"Lieutenant Lute, Adam will likely never be able to participate in another one of these... Exterminations again. Thankfully, he wasn't stabbed with an Angelic Weapon, however it appears that when he was stabbed, the knife nicked his pleura, and caused him to develop a hemopneumothorax. He also has an evisceration, and may have some ischemic bowel and major internal bleeding."

Lute didn't understand a word that the angel in front of her was saying, other than things looked seriously for Adam. She turns to look through the glass as the angels still in the room prepare for an emergency needle decompression.

The wolf angel starts walking towards the door to head into the Adam's room.

"I have to get back in there Lieutenant, but if you have any questions, any one of us will be more than willing to answer them fo-" He is cut off as Lute grabs him by the collar of his scrubs.

"You had better save his fucking life." She snarls, "That man in there is everything to me. Don't you dare fuck up." She points to Adam with her wing and releases the angel.

He scurries out of the room as fast as his legs will allow him to and finally, Lute passes out.

Notes:

Bit heavy on medical terminology, if you have any questions on any of it, feel free to have a comment and I will gladly explain.

Chapter 3: What To Do With An Unconscious Exorcist

Summary:

Lute wakes up in a hospital bed surrounded by beeping equipment.

Chapter Text

"I just saw her eyes open." A voice says out of the void.

"It looks like she is waking up." Another chimes in.

Lute slowly opens her eyes and immediately regrets it. She now has a splitting headache. Honestly it feels like Vaggie dropped a rock on her head or something. She looks around, trying to figure out where she is.

"You're safe, if you were wondering." A voice says, coming closer.

Lute turns to look towards the voice and sees the same wolf angel she had talked to before she passed out. "What happened?"

"You want the long story or the short one?"

"Short."

"Well, you managed to bring Adam here after he was stabbed. He lost a lot of blood and had to undergo major surgery. He also had to have a few feet of ischemic bowel removed, but that won't affect anything. His guts are all back inside his body. You, on the other hand, were worse than you appeared. I'm honestly surprised you managed to make it here without passing out." He says, watching Lute for her reaction.

She doesn't show her emotions, just absorbs all of the information. "So, he's alive?"

"Yes." The angel confirms. "I'd be more worried about yourself though."

The Exorcist finally looks down at her own body and is immediately shocked. "Where's my arm?"

"You don't remember?" Lute shakes her head.

"You had a traumatic amputation. You lost about 250 mL of blood from it. X-rays also showed signs of a brain bleed, but we are keeping an eye on that. Cranial swelling has gone down significantly, but you will have some permanent scars on your abdomen. You were also unconscious for 3 days."

"But Adam is going to be OK?" She asks again.

"If he sticks to his recovery plan, then yes." The angel turns to leave before stopping. "He got you a gift for you as well, insisted that it be delivered before you woke up."

Intrigued, she wonders what Adam could have insisted be delivered before she woke up. The angel returned with a medium sized rectangular box and gently placed it on the bed next to Lute, and then he left.

Lute eyes the package but then grabs it. Its about two feet in length, the outside color red. She carefully removes the top and is hit with a wave of love for Adam.

Inside the box is a silver prosthetic arm, and a note. Lute gently removes the prosthetic and picks up the note.

'Thanks for saving my life down there Danger Tits. Can't have my best girl missing an arm. We will need to talk when you get a bit better. From, the Dickmaster'

Lute smiles, and sets the note down, focusing her attention on the gift. She manages to lift it in a way so that she could place her stub in the groove.

The wolf angel walks by her room and notices her struggling. "Can I help you with that?" He asks, gesturing to the prosthetic.

"Please." Lute says, allowing the other angel to secure the prosthetic to her arm and buckle the straps. He steps back so she can admire her new upgrade.

"Please tell Adam thank you and that we will talk soon."

Chapter 4: You Good? Cause I'm Not

Summary:

Adam is finally released from the hospital.

Chapter Text

The day had finally come where Adam could leave the hospital. A bunch of his Exorcists had lined up outside in the hallway, congratulating him on getting better so fast.

Lute had been cleared to leave the week prior, however she still had some issues. Bright lights almost always give her headaches now, and same with some noises. She is just thankful that she survived the failed Extermination and that she saved Adam.

Currently she was pacing outside of his locked door, having scared of the other Exorcists. None of them dare to cross Lute, knowing that she wouldn't hesitate to stab them in the back if it were to her benefit. Adam had insisted on making sure he looked his best before Lute saw him for the first time in a month.

Lute hears a click and turns towards the door. Standing in the door frame is Adam. The man she risked her life to save. The First Man. That Adam.

He's wearing one of his stupid band t-shirts and a pair of sweatpants and sneakers. He doesn't have his mask because it was broken in the battle, so Lute can see his golden eyes and fluffy mop of hair, which was causing her brain to short-circuit. Plastered on his face is his signature shit-eating grin, which was currently aimed at Lute. Lute rushes at him without thinking, wrapping her wings around his torso, very aware of their comical height difference.

Adam wraps his wings around Lute's small form, enveloping her completely. Lute clears her throat and untangles herself from him when he does this, not appreciating the physical contact or show of emotions.

"'Sup Danger Tits, you like the present I got for you?" Adam asks, eyeing the prosthetic arm which Lute was currently wearing.

She had decided to undergo another surgery to place a connector at the end of her amputated arm. This made it easier for her to put in and take off said prosthetic by herself.

"It's good. Thank you sir." Lute states calmly, embarrassed for having let her emotions control her the previous minute.

Shove those thoughts and emotions away bitch. You are not a slut, you are an Exorcist and Adam is your boss. Lute chastizes herself in her head.

"I'm fucking starved. This shitty hospital food is horrible, so let's go get some actual food. You down Lute?" Adam asks, watching his lieutenant.

"Yes that sounds nice."

Chapter 5: Discussion Part 1

Summary:

Lute gets Adam out of the hospital and they go eat.

Chapter Text

Lute cannot believe that she finally has Adam outside of the hospital. He took forever to get out of there. In the end, the discharge nurse decided not to argue with him and let him walk out instead of being wheeled out in a wheelchair.

Lute can hardly believe he survived. She knows that the hardest part is ahead now, and that would be getting Adam to cooperate and take time to rest and recover.

No Exorcist liked to be stuck in one place with nothing to do. And Lute knew this better than most. She herself had been stuck in a bed for 3 weeks, and Adam had been stuck in there for a month.

She had at least let her body recover and took the mandatory down time to learn how to better use her new prosthetic. She wanted it to be just like she never lost her arm, and the practice was paying off. Her grip strength was actually stronger with the metal limb, however her reaction time was a few seconds delayed.

Currently Adam was rambling on about some new song he had written while in the bed at the hospital. Loot was just nodding along, telling him that it probably sounded amazing and that she couldn't wait to hear it. Internally, she was yelling at him for not taking proper care of his body.

Is he trying to die again?? The hospital didn't tell him the real reason why they were discharging him.

The discharge nurse had explained to Lute that Adam wasn't able to stay in the hospital anymore. He refused to participate in his physical therapy, was constantly wandering around the hospital, was flirting with the staff, and his vulgar language wasn't helping anyone get better.

I doubt the guitar playing helpe-

“Hey Luuuute,” Adam's voice says, penetrating her thoughts. “I asked you a question, are you there?”

“Yes sir, sorry sir.” Lute responds.

“Good, ‘cuz we need to talk.” Adam says. “However, as I said before, I'm fucking starved, how does lunch at McMichaels™ sound? I've been craving their Deluxe Angel Burgers™ for weeks!”

“That sounds good sir.”

The two head over to McMichael’s™. Adam orders four Deluxe Angel Burgers™ with no pickles and Lute orders their Happy Citizen™ salad.

They take their food over to a corner booth and start chowing down. Lute pecks at her salad as she watches Adam eat out of the corner of her eye, smirking with how fast he inhales his burgers.

Finally the First Man is finished and he lets out a massive burp.

“Damn Danger Tits, that was the best meal I've had since before the fucking Extermination!!” He says, rubbing his stomach appreciatively.

“You said you wanted to talk, right sir?” Lute asks, trying to steer the neurodivergent angel back on track.

“Oh right! It's not exactly… appropriate to discuss in a public place.” Adam answers, watching Lute for her response.

Lute is shocked that Adam has something to say that he is too embarrassed to explain in a public setting.

“OK, we can head to my house if that would make you feel more comfortable.” Lute offers, hoping that he will say no and push off the conversation another day.

“That sounds great, however, let's go to my bachelor pad, I have missed my bed so much!” He exclaims.

“That works as well.”

Chapter 6: Care for the Injuried

Summary:

TW: Minor injuries

Adam and Lute head back to his house. Adam reinjures himself and Lute has to care for him.

Chapter Text

Adam and Lute fly to his house. Lute watches as Adam flies. The other Angel was trying to hide it, however Lute could see that he was in pain. His movements were stiff and jerky, his wings kept cramping up from lack of use.

Lute paid attention and whenever she noticed it getting harder and harder for Adam to keep up with her she would make the other land with her and take a breath. Adam wouldn't admit it, he was thankful that she was making him do that.

"I don't know what I'd do without you Danger Tits."

Lute chuckles and replies back, "You wouldn't have to know what to do you wouldn't be here. You would have died down there. "

Adam blanks, not knowing what to say to that.

"All right break is up, we're almost at your house." Lute says before taking off again. Adam follows, albeit a bit slower. The rest of the way there Lute doesn't talk, internally scolding herself for allowing herself to like the other Angel.

Finally they arrive at Adam's house. Lute unlocks the door and allows herself in, going to find some ice for the Angel to put on his aching body. Adam stumbles into the house, clutching his stomach.

"Adam?"

Concerned, Lute rushes over to the man, and pulls his hand away from his stomach, which is stained with blood.

"I think you tore open your wound again." Loot mumbles under her breath. Adam says nothing he just groans in pain.

With superhuman strength Lute picks Adam up and carries him into his bedroom, carefully placing him on the bed in a supine position.

"Stay here sir. I have to go get some medical supplies and then I'll be back."

Lute goes and scrounges around Adam's house, looking for anything that can be used to stop the bleeding. She manages to find some gauze hidden in a drawer, and grabs that along with some alcohol wipes. She heads back into the room where Adam is currently laying, looking pale. Lute approaches him and explains what she's going to do.

"This is going to hurt sir," Lute says as she places the gauze on the injury, drawing a hiss of pain out of Adam.

"It doesn't look like you completely ripped it open it just looks like you tore it a bit."

"And I suppose that's fucking better??" Adam says sarcastically.

"Would you rather have completely tore all the stitches out and have me have to sew it back up or have to take you back to the hospital?" Lute says pointedly.

"Good point Danger Tits."

Lute quickly patches Adam up, and carefully places a sterile non-stick bandage on top of the injury. By the time she is finished with this task, Adam is fast asleep.

Lute carefully sneaks out of the room, so as not to wake the angel. She washes her hands of his blood and writes him a quick note explaining where she went, and then she leaves.
