Home After a Long Day

Summary:

Xander had a long day, but thankfully he'll at least get his nightly call from Inigo. (A one-shot I added a second chapter to cause reasons)

Chapter Text

Xander had a long day. A very long day. Time seemed to drag on with every minor clerical error left for him to fix and every snide comment from his father before more paperwork was packed on top of his workload. It didn’t help that Inigo had been away for the past month. They had called each other every night, talking for hours when they could, but it wasn’t the same as when he was home. But Xander wouldn’t ask him not to follow his dreams, and touring with his ballet troupe was a part of that, not to mention the fact that he’d made a name for himself in the dance industry, and Xander could not be prouder of his boyfriend. Posters from past performances hung on the walls and old trophies were tucked away on a shelf, not predominantly displayed since Inigo kept insisting it was far too embarrassing, but still there, nonetheless. Still, he missed Inigo.
Xander’s siblings had been around more often, knowing he was busy with work, and he appreciated it. He noticed the way they attempted to pick up some of the slack while Inigo was busy and unable to drag him away from the hours spent working from home or force him to relax once he did finally stop working. He noticed the forms that would magically vanish from his desk only to reappear finished, with Leo’s signature, or the lunches that he recognized from Camilla’s recipe list, not to mention the way she guarded his calendar to ward off anyone looking to get an appointment. But even that wasn’t always enough.
He trudged into the apartment he shared with Inigo, carelessly tossing aside the keys in the general direction of the bowl they were normally stored in, barely managing to kick off his shoes as he passed by the rug on his way to the couch to collapse. He slightly moved, almost bothering to get comfortable before giving into the exhaustion.
Thankfully his ringtone for Inigo was a soft and pretty song from a previous performance of his, but Xander still was not excited to wake up. He groaned slightly, clumsily reaching out for the phone, missing once before answering.
“Xander, are you alright!” Now he was awake.
“What? Of course, I apologize for being late to call. I just lost track of time.”
“Call? Wha-Uh… Xander, do you know what day it is?” Xander blinked, sitting up as the call took him off guard for the second time. Honestly though, he did not, but it seemed like the silence was enough to answer Inigo’s question, bursting out laughing for some reason. “Well, that explains a lot.”
     “Explains… what?”
Inigo just laughed harder. “Xander I’m-Xander I’m at the airport! Should I just call an Uber then?” That hit Xander like a brick wall. He moved the phone away, checking the date. A month of waiting for Inigo to get home, just to forget him when he finally got back. His eyes glanced at the time as well, 10:47 pm, he should have been at the airport at 10:00 pm to pick Inigo up after a full day flight.
“I am so sorry Inigo, I will be right there as soon as I can. I’m heading out now.” There was another softer laugh from the other end of the line.
“Alright, I’ll be waiting. Text you where I’m at.” The second he hung up Xander flew to the door, nearly falling as he tried to quickly throw on his shoes and snatched the keys on his way past. The drive to the airport was faster than it should have been, with a quick check of his phone in the parking lot so he knew where to go before he headed inside. Navigating the airport took embarrassingly long, not made better by the stress as he tried to follow the big signs overhead, but it didn’t matter when he finally saw Inigo.
He was slumped into one of the chairs, looking worse for wear, bags under his eyes and messy hair, dressed in comfy clothes he’d normally never go out in, and Xander was fairly certain Inigo’s baggy t-shirt was actually one of his.
“Inigo!” he called and Ingo looked up from his phone, lighting up with a thousand-dollar smile, standing up with open arms, pulling Xander into a hug the moment he was within range. It was rare for Inigo to be affectionate in public, but Xander wouldn’t’ be complaining, he reacted quickly, picking Inigo up and spinning him around. He ignored the little squeak from Inigo as he hid his face in Xander’s shoulder.
“Xander!” he scolded, barely hiding the smile when he was returned to the ground, but Xander didn’t pay it any mind, making it up with a quick kiss. “I missed you.”
     “I missed you as well.”
His nose scrunched slightly as he finally took in Xander’s appearance, “You look like a trainwreck.”
“And so do you.” Inigo’s smile faded into a mischievous smirk.
“Well then, let’s go home and get to bed then. We’re going to sleep for twenty-four hours.”
     “But I-“
“Twenty-four hours! You owe me for forgetting me in an airport.”
With a sigh Xander relented, nodding. “Anything you wish.”
“Dangerous,” he teased, taking Xander’s hand before tacking on, “Love you.” Xander grabbed the discarded suitcase, while Inigo had a duffle bag over his shoulder, guiding him towards the car.
     “I love you too.”

Chapter Text

When Inigo said he was going to stay in bed for twenty-four hours straight, he wasn’t kidding. This happened every time he went on tour, the two would spend a whole day in bed together. After that Xander would go back to work while Inigo had the week off to rest before getting back to the studio. So, Inigo would probably be tired when Xander returned home that evening. He expected for the next week Inigo would spend his time sleeping on the couch while dramatic romance movies and soap operas in languages Xander didn’t know.
So, he was quite when he entered their apartment, hoping to not wake him up early, only to hear singing coming from the kitchen. He hesitated a moment at the door, taking a second before he followed the sound.
He found Inigo with his earbuds in, singing along to a peppy song, and dancing slightly as he shuffled around the kitchen finishing dinner preparations. Xander approached quietly, leaning on the counter to just admire him. His hair was slightly messy and pink, framing his face perfectly, though he couldn’t really see his face with him turned away. He was still in his pajamas like he had been the full day before. Once the song ended he laughed a little, turning to grab the noodle strainer off the counter, only to find himself face to face with Xander, jumping, his eyes wide and his face turning progressively redder as he processed what was happening. “Xander! How long have you been sitting there?”
“I just got home,” he offered, not really answering, but at least offered an apologetic smile.
“This is so embarrassing! You’ve just been sitting there listening to my awful singing!” Xander couldn’t help but laugh, causing Inigo to quickly cover his face. “Xander!”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” Xander replied, lifting his hands in a placating gesture.
“I certainly hope so, and after all I went through to make you dinner! How could you betray me like this?” He declared in an over the top dramatic way, a hand on his forehead as he stepped back. Xander laughed again and Inigo finally grinned back.
     “Thank you Inigo.”
“You’re welcome. Now, why don’t I finish this while you tell me all about your day so we can eat?”
“Of course,” Xander answered, starting in on a brief retelling of his day, Inigo nodding along as he listened. It was such a simple thing, but Xander still couldn’t stop smiling. His beautiful boyfriend waiting at home for him was more than enough, perfect even.
