Chapter Text
There he is again. The tall silver-haired man across the street. He’s wearing a navy-coloured button-up today. His sleeves are rolled up to his elbows, and his shirt is tucked into his black jeans that hug his long legs perfectly. Cloud wonders how tall he is. Everyone always towers over Cloud but this man… He’s a tree. A beautiful silver tree.
Sephiroth. That’s what Aerith called him.
Cloud watches as the man unlocks the door to the flower shop. It’s called “Floral Reverie” and Cloud thinks the name is pretty cute, considering who owns it. He doesn’t know Sephiroth personally but he would have never taken him for a florist. Sephiroth is elegant and seems kind of stoic. He has a face that belongs on glossy magazines, television, and big movie screens. Everywhere else but hidden in a flower shop.
Cloud sighs as the man enters the shop, the soft bell ringing across the street, and the door closes behind him. Cloud flips the sign of his bakery to “open” and hurries back inside. He can’t leave Zack alone for too long with the fresh pastries.
He inhales deeply, humming softly as the scent of sugar, fresh bread and coffee fills his nose. Wedge already made a cup and hands it to Cloud, who takes it with a thankful nod. He moves to the kitchen and finds Zack licking his long fingers, a sheepish smile on his lips.
“Don’t worry, I’ll pay for it,” Zack quickly says.
“You bet your ass you will,” Cloud grumbles.
He’s not angry with Zack. Zack is his best friend and supports him in every way possible. He wouldn’t be here without him. He can take as many sweets as he wants.
Zack returns to the front of the shop to serve the first customers. He’s charming and handsome and brings in a lot of people. His girlfriend Aerith designed their flyers and wrote the menu on the big chalkboard at the entrance with a flourish and cute handwriting. She also keeps bringing flowers for the tables and windowsills. Flowers from the shop across the street.
Cloud tells himself every week to go there and get flowers himself. He doesn’t really know what’s keeping him from doing so. But he’s curious and he wants to take a closer look at the handsome florist.
He shakes his head. No, no. He wants flowers for his bakery. Not a man to drool over.
Mornings are very busy. People come to get their breakfast before going to work or school. Time is flying and Cloud wonders if they might need more help soon. He only has two more employees besides Zack - Wedge and Biggs - and the lines are getting longer every week. He hadn’t expected his shop to explode like this, but apparently, there hadn’t been anything comparable for a while in this area, and people loved his baked wares and pastries.
“Plume & Crumb”. That’s Cloud’s bakery. He never thought he would open his own business one day and at a young age, too. It had cost him a lot of nerves, time and tears. Zack had always built him back up when he thought he wouldn’t be able to pull through. The bakery only opened a few months ago, but his advisor says he is already doing very well and has no worries. Cloud will pay back his loan from the bank quicker than expected.
The flower shop was already there when Cloud rented the place. He thinks they fit together very well. Sweets and flowers. A perfect gift. Cloud has never been gifted flowers in his life. He wonders which flowers he would get if someone decided to buy him some.
Aerith always brings lilies, forget-me-nots, or carnations. She likes to mix things up and Cloud lets her because she has good taste. He knows she also purchases flower seeds from the silver tree man for her own little garden.
Cloud rarely buys flowers or plants for himself, always worried his cats might eat them. Maybe it’s good no one ever gifts him flowers after all.
His feet already hurt when it’s lunchtime. He shouldn’t have worn new shoes, it’s his own fault. It’s warm and Cloud takes a quick break to stand outside the shop for a bit, drinking in the sun. The door of “Floral Reverie” stands open, and a variety of beautiful bouquets and plants adorn the spot right outside the large window.
Cloud squints and sees a familiar face inside the shop talking to the silver tree. He hears Aerith’s laughter and only a moment later she appears at the door, waving at the florist, and jogs over the street in Cloud’s direction.
“Hey, Cloud,” she greets him with a wide smile.
“Aerith, how are you?”
“I’m good! I just got some new flower seeds. Sephiroth extra ordered them for me. He’s very nice and has helped me a lot with my garden.”
“How so?” Cloud asks, and his eyes flicker over to the shop.
“He taught me about all kinds of soil and wrote down some tips and tricks for me.”
“That’s nice.”
Aerith giggles and tilts her head, examining Cloud’s face. Cloud frowns at her and takes a step back.
“You should go over there sometimes. Maybe you find some other flowers you would like for the bakery.”
Cloud shrugs. “Maybe.”
“Aerith? Is that you?” Zack’s voice carries over from somewhere within the shop.
Aerith turns on her heels and goes inside. Cloud looks once more over to where the flowers are bathing in the sun. The colours are even more vibrant under the bright light. Cloud feels a pull towards the flower shop. To the man working there. His curiosity gets the best of him as he stares at the fresh bouquets at the window and he takes a step forward. Feeling a mix of nerves and excitement, Cloud shakes his head and steps inside the bakery again.
The day goes by fast, and Cloud is exhausted when he closes the shop. And it’s only Wednesday. He loves his job and wouldn’t want to change a thing, but he has been pushing himself a lot lately. He’s aware of that. Cloud has been testing new pastry recipes and trying to add his personal touch.
Zack is his lab rat, but the man just loves everything, so his judgment isn’t really something Cloud can take seriously.
The next afternoon, Cloud is refilling the bakery display with fresh pastries when he hears excited scampering and something being smacked down on the counter. He looks up and finds a teenager with shoulder-long silver hair gazing intently at him, a few gil trapped beneath the palm resting on the counter.
“Hey there,” Cloud greets the boy. “What can I get you?”
“One lemon and lime tart, please!”
Cloud nods with a smile. “Would you like to eat it here or take it with you?”
The teen glances back at the entry door as if he’s waiting for someone.
“I, uhm…”
“I can pack it up for you and if you want to stay after all, you just choose a table and eat it there, alright?”
The boy nods quickly and pushes the Gil coins towards Cloud. It’s not enough, Cloud realises, but he takes it without another comment. He grabs one of the sky-blue boxes with a Chocobo embossed on it and neatly places the tart inside. When he looks back up, the teen isn’t there anymore. He’s standing at the door talking to a man.
Fuck, it’s the florist. Sephiroth.
The teen looks bashful while the walking tree seems to be slightly irritated. Cloud grabs the box and walks to the door.
“Everything alright here?” he asks and Sephiroth’s head whips up.
His glowing green eyes widen for a moment before he clears his throat and says, “Sorry, my son ran off without telling me.”
“Oh,” Cloud breathes. He has a son. “He wanted some tart.”
Sephiroth’s gaze flickers to the box in Cloud’s hand and then raises his eyebrows at the teenager.
“Spending your allowance on pastries? I thought you had nothing left, Kadaj.”
Kadaj shuffles on his feet, hands clasped behind his back. “I… just really wanted it…”
Sephiroth sighs. “Sorry for the trouble. Did he pay you enough?”
Cloud just smiles and holds out the box for Kadaj to take. “It’s all good. Enjoy your tart. And don’t run off again without telling your dad, okay?”
Kadaj’s eyes light up as he takes the box, and grins brightly up at Cloud, nodding. “I promise. Thank you, mister.”
“Just Cloud is fine.”
“Cloud,” Kadaj repeats. He hugs the box and waves goodbye, looks right and left at the street, and rushes over to the flower shop.
Sephiroth releases another sigh and glances at Cloud. “Thank you. I should head back as well.”
Before he can stop himself, Cloud blurts out, “You look like you could use a coffee.” He blushes as he realises his words and quickly adds, “Not that you look bad! Just a bit tired.”
Stop talking!
“I mean, you look great. Really great.”
Oh god, shut up!
Sephiroth, however, chuckles softly and Cloud feels his cheeks redden even more. “You’re right. I really need coffee. I can take a short break.”
“We have great coffee! Would you like some?”
Sephiroth’s eyes trail over Cloud’s face for a few heartbeats. He inclines his head in a nod, that amused smile still on his unfairly sexy lips. Cloud slaps himself mentally.
He leads the new customer into the bakery and slips behind the bar.
“What do you want? Cappuccino? Cafe latte? Americano? Espresso? We also have syrups.” Cloud lists them off quickly and then bites his lip, waiting for Sephiroth’s response.
Sephiroth tips his finger against his bottom lip, thinking. “I’d like a cafe latte with some vanilla syrup if you have that.”
“Yes!” Cloud beams at him but quickly straightens his face into a polite smile, embarrassed by his excited outburst. “I, uh, I’ll prepare it for you.”
Sephiroth grins at him, and Cloud tries to control his breathing. A super handsome guy is watching him work. Cloud needs this coffee to be perfect, so Sephiroth will come back.
Cloud doesn’t know why he feels so drawn to Sephiroth. Yes, he’s hot. He radiates this calmness you want to wrap yourself up in. His movements are graceful and his eyes… those eyes are like electric sparks zipping up Cloud’s spine, leaving goosebumps and pleasant shivers along the way.
If Cloud believed in soulmates, he would say that Sephiroth and he were created from the same stardust and finally found each other again. But he doesn’t believe in those things and he would never say that thought out loud. Especially not in front of Zack or Aerith. He’d never hear the end of it.
He finishes the beverage without spilling anything, tripping over his own feet or burning his fingers and places the cup in front of Sephiroth, who has made himself comfortable on a stool right at the counter.
Sephiroth thanks him and takes the cup with long, pretty fingers. He holds it to his nose, breathes in deeply and lets out a hum. Cloud suppresses a gasp. The silver tree sips at the coffee and his gaze returns to Cloud.
“It’s very good.”
He fishes out some Gil and holds it out to Cloud. But Cloud shakes his head quickly.
“It’s on the house. First-time customer and all.”
Sephiroth quirks an eyebrow. “You already let Kadaj have his tart even though he didn’t have enough money for it. Won’t your boss feel irritated with you?”
“Nah,” Cloud smirks. “I’m the boss.”
And I’m irritated with myself all the time.
“Oh, you are?” Sephiroth takes another sip. “I own the flower shop across the street. I like to play favourites, too.”
Cloud blushes. He busies himself by wiping down the surface of the counter, even though it’s spotless.
“My friend often buys flowers at your shop…,” Cloud says. “Aerith.”
“Ah, yes. She’s a lovely girl. She’s building her own garden and asked me for some tips. I hope I was helpful to her.”
“Yes, definitely. She mentioned it just the other day.”
Another customer comes to the front and Cloud turns his attention to them with an apologetic smile to Sephiroth. After he’s done, he sees the silver tree getting up from his spot.
“Thank you for the coffee,” Sephiroth says. “I should head back. Can’t leave my kids alone for too long at the shop or they’ll wreak havoc.”
Cloud’s eyes widen. “You have more kids?”
Sephiroth smiles warmly. He fishes out his wallet and slips some Gil into the tip jar even when Cloud is about to protest.
“I have three. Well, they’re not mine, but…” He shakes his head and chuckles. “That’s a story for another time. See you soon, Cloud.”
Cloud watches Sephiroth leave, staring after him with parted lips. The way he said his name… Cloud wants to hear him saying it again and again and… He’s so stunned he didn’t even say goodbye.
“Sooo, who’s the tall guy?” Zack asks, flinging his arm around Cloud’s shoulder.
Cloud is torn from his daydreaming and grimaces at Zack’s knowing smile. “He’s the florist… Sephiroth.”
“He’s your type.”
“What do you know about my type?”
“Tall, hot and handsome.”
“You make me sound so shallow!” Cloud pouts.
Zack laughs, patting Cloud’s back and takes an order from the next customer.
From then on, Sephiroth visits the bakery café more frequently, sometimes with Kadaj in tow, and Cloud couldn’t be happier and at the same time more miserable than ever. On one side, he wants Sephiroth around him all the time, on the other he wants Sephiroth around him all the time . Zack tells him just to ask Sephiroth out but Cloud isn’t as straightforward and confident as Zack.
Cloud admires him whenever he takes his spot at the counter, they make small talk and Sephiroth leaves a generous tip. He doesn’t know what to do, what the next step is, how to tell Sephiroth…
“You know, just go over there and ask him about flowers,” Biggs suggests one day.
They all by now know about Cloud’s massive crush on the florist and try to encourage him to do something about it.
Bigg’s idea isn’t too shabby. He should show interest in Sephiroth’s work and, maybe they can get closer thanks to the power of flowers and pastries.
Cloud knows it’s almost closing time at the “Floral Reverie”. Their times pretty much overlap but he just wants to take a quick peek. Today he’ll go over there and talk with Sephiroth. Cloud stands in the staff bathroom, examining himself in the mirror. He flicks his feathery spikes around, checks his teeth and nails and nods at his reflection with a serious expression.
The door is already wide open when Cloud arrives at the shop and Cloud steps inside, looking around. There is no sight of Sephiroth, but he hears several voices in the adjoined room.
The shop is a captivating mix of colours and scents, with delicate petals, lush greenery, and fragrant blooms filling the space. The light of the evening sun filters through the windows, casting a golden glow on the carefully arranged bouquets displayed on tables and shelves.
Cloud pauses to admire a bouquet of deep red roses accented with baby's breath and fern leaves. The rich colour contrasts beautifully with the subtle greenery, creating a striking yet balanced arrangement. Next to it, a smaller bouquet of cheerful sunflowers catches his eye, their golden faces turning toward the large windows.
He moves toward a section where pastel-hued peonies and ranunculus are arranged in delicate glass vases, their petals forming intricate layers that seem almost too perfect to be real.
"Enjoying the view?" Sephiroth's silky voice chimes.
Cloud gasps and his jaw drops when he sees the man. His silver hair is pulled in a high ponytail, and he is wearing a long-sleeved shirt, but the sleeves are rolled up to his elbows and the buttons on top are undone. Cloud can’t help but stare at these arms, the veins popping and the muscles flexing under ivory skin and he has to be careful not to drool at the sight.
He is definitely enjoying the view.
Cloud clears his throat, a blush tinting his cheeks. "I-I was just admiring the flowers." He shyly brushes a finger against a silky petal. “Did… did you make all these?” He waves at the beautiful bouquets.
“Yes,” Sephiroth replies. “Are you looking for something specific? I was just finishing a bouquet, but if you need anything, I still have some time.”
“Oh, no, I was… I only wanted to see… I got curious. I’ve never been here before, even though my tables and windows are decorated with your flowers.”
“I see.”
Sephiroth’s gaze is full of warmth and amusement, and Cloud’s heart skips. The florist returns behind the counter. There’s a vase placed on it with an unfinished bouquet and Sephiroth picks up some flowers, cutting them to the same length and adding them to the bundle.
Cloud stares at the man who works so gently and carefully with the delicate flowers. He knows he’s falling in love with Sephiroth, even though he doesn’t know him that well. The thought makes his heart jolt.
“Did you have a good day?” Sephiroth asks.
“Oh, yes, busy, but good. How was yours?”
“I got an order for a wedding. Lots to do. Can’t complain, though.”
“That sounds like a lot of work!”
Sephiroth shrugs, smiling. “I sometimes get extra help when it’s too much for me alone. It’s no problem.”
There’s a shriek followed by laughter coming from the other room. Sephiroth turns his head to look in its direction.
“My kids are in the workshop,” Sephiroth explains at Cloud’s puzzled expression. “I sometimes let them create their own flower arrangements.”
“Oh, that’s really sweet,” Cloud breathes.
He wonders if Sephiroth is married. But he doesn’t see a ring on his fingers. Maybe he’s a widower? But he mentioned the kids are not his own…
Sephiroth grimaces slightly when he hears something shatter on the floor.
“I should better take a look.”
Cloud nods. He hesitates for a moment, but then follows the florist to the workshop. His jaw drops as he sees three teenagers whirling around the room, flowers and tools in hand.
He recognises Kadaj. The boy is bundling a mix of flowers together, his tongue between his lips as he focuses on his task. Another teenager with short and slightly spiky hair is standing next to him, working on his own bouquet that looks a bit crooked. The third one has silver hair that falls to his chest. He is sweeping up some glass shards that look as if they had once been a vase.
“Did you get hurt?” Sephiroth asks as soon as he sees the broken glass.
The teen shakes his head. “No. I bumped against the table and it dropped. I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright. Be careful when you put it in the trash.”
The boy nods and continues cleaning up his mess. Sephiroth notices Cloud standing at the door and smiles at him, waving him closer. Cloud fully enters the room, rubbing his neck nervously, and stands next to Sephiroth.
“Kids,” Sephiroth calls out and the teenagers stop what they’re doing and look at their father. “This is Cloud. He owns the bakery across the street.”
“Cloud!” Kadaj yells happily. He drops his flowers and runs towards him, excitedly jumping up and down.
“Nice to see you again, Kadaj,” Cloud greets him with a smile.
Sephiroth rests a hand on the teenager’s shoulder, trying to calm him down, and gestures at the other two.
“This is Loz.” He points at the boy with the short hair, who waves at Cloud with a wide smile. “And Yazoo.” The teenager, sweeping up the glass, nods at Cloud.
They all stare at Cloud with curiosity and the baker feels quite flustered at the attention. Sephiroth grins at him, clearly amused.
“Finish your work, you three.”
Kadaj gives Cloud another bright smile and then hurries back to join Loz at the working table. They resume their work on the bouquets while Yazoo finishes picking up the broken glass with careful precision. Cloud watches as the teens continue their tasks with determination. The sound of cheerful chatter and the fragrant scents envelop Cloud, making him feel even more at ease in Sephiroth's presence. He can't help but admire the man who seems to effortlessly balance his work as a florist and a father to the spirited teens.
“They… look a lot like you,” Cloud says, gazing at the three teens bickering at each other.
Sephiroth chuckles softly. “They do, don’t they? But they’re not mine… I only take care of them. They have no one else. They’ve been with me for three years now. I’m lucky they warmed up to me so fast.”
Cloud nods slowly. The man isn’t only utterly beautiful and good at his job, he also has a heart of gold. Cloud is a shy, awkward and small guy. He has no chance with Adonis Silver Tree.
His eyes drift from the teenagers to the subject of his adoration. The man smiles warmly as he watches his three foster kids assess each other’s bouquets. Sephiroth brings his hand up to his lips as he releases another cute chuckle, and Cloud feels his heart melting at the sound and sight.
“I should probably calm them down before they create more chaos.” Sephiroth winces lightly when Yazoo snatches another bundle of baby breaths to decorate his bouquet.
“Oh, yes, sure, don’t let me keep you,” Cloud quickly says.
Kadaj peeks up at that and rushes to the adults. “Cloud, you’re leaving?”
The other two perk up their heads, the flowers all forgotten.
“No, don’t leave just yet!” Loz cries out.
Sephiroth raises his eyebrows, his gaze flickering between the teens now surrounding Cloud, grabbing his hands and arms.
“Dad, let him stay for dinner? Please?” Kadaj asks, pouting at the big silver tree.
Sephiroth lets out a sigh, his eyes trailing to Cloud. “You… you don’t have to.”
“I don’t want to cause any inconvenience,” Cloud quickly says, feeling his cheeks blushing.
“You don’t,” Sephiroth replies. “We haven’t had guests over in a while… It would be… nice.”
Cloud blinks at the florist, his heart missing a beat as the man smiles at him warmly. “Okay. Thank you. I’d love to stay for dinner.”
Kadaj and Loz cheer out happily while Yazoo just grins. They’re still holding onto Cloud’s hands and arms and are about to pull him out of the shop when Sephiroth clears his throat loudly.
The four turn around at the sound.
“Aren’t you three forgetting something?” Sephiroth asks, his hands waving around the workshop and the mess they left behind.
The three teenagers groan and whine but start cleaning up without further complaints. Cloud moves over to stand beside Sephiroth again, watching them with a small smile. After a few moments, he feels Sephiroth’s eyes on him and he turns to look at him, hoping his cheeks won’t catch fire again.
Sephiroth’s sensual lips are turned up and his glowing green eyes are soft. Cloud can’t help but stare at him, locked in his gaze.
“Thank you,” Sephiroth whispers. “They seem to like you a lot already. They can be a bit much… So… thank you for indulging them.”
And there is the traitorous blush. Cloud hopes Sephiroth isn’t looking too closely.
“Oh, it’s no problem at all. They’re sweet and good kids.”
Sephiroth nods. His eyes trail over Cloud’s face and linger on his lips for a moment longer before he turns away to observe his kids’ cleaning progress.
Cloud, though, keeps looking at the man. He finds himself captivated by Sephiroth's undeniable charm and grace as he interacts with the teenagers. As he watches the teens clean up the mess, Cloud notices Sephiroth stealing glances in his direction. A soft warmth fills Cloud's chest, feeling a flutter of excitement at the possibility of spending more time with Sephiroth and his foster kids.
The prospect of dinner with the charming florist excites him and he can't help but feel grateful for the unexpected invitation. Despite his initial shyness, Cloud starts to relax in their presence, feeling like he fits right into their world.
“Well done,” Sephiroth says, tearing Cloud from his thoughts. “Get your jackets and we’ll lock up and go home.”
The teens cheer and take their belongings. Kadaj grabs Cloud’s hand and the baker’s lips part in astonishment as the boy smiles warmly up at him and pulls him out of the shop.
“Dad cooks really well, you’ll like it,” he tells Cloud.
“You don’t have any allergies, do you?” Sephiroth asks as he locks the door to “Floral Reverie” and stashes the keys into his pockets.
“No, and I’m not picky either,” Cloud says, and Sephiroth gives him a relieved smile.
“We live around the corner,” the florist informs him.
“That’s neat. I live down the street myself. Close to work means I can sleep in a little longer,” Cloud rambles, a faint pink spreading on his face.
Red is probably his face’s natural colour in Sephiroth’s presence by now.
Kadaj keeps clinging to his arm all the way to the apartment, talking about school and his friends. They arrive at the apartment only a few minutes later and the teens hurry inside as soon as Sephiroth unlocks the door.
He shakes his head fondly when Kadaj and Loz run along the hallway to their rooms, respectively. Yazoo follows them in an unhurried manner. Sephiroth hands Cloud some guest slippers and takes the baker’s jacket to hang up in the small wardrobe at the entrance.
Cloud tries to take in the apartment without looking too nosy. Framed pictures decorate the walls of the hallway. Most of them show the three teenagers. Here and there are men Cloud doesn’t know and guesses they’re close friends. There aren’t a lot of photos of Sephiroth, though, he notices with a bit of disappointment.
Sephiroth leads him to the kitchen while the teenagers chatter and laugh in the background.
The kitchen has a rustic charm with wooden cabinets and a farmhouse-style sink. A small dining table with a set of two chairs stands in the middle. Fresh flowers sit in a vase as the centrepiece. The street below is visible through a large window, and the sill is lined with several small pots containing herbs and flowers.
“Would you like something to drink? We have orange, apple and melon juice, water of course… Hmm, maybe a soda?” Sephiroth asks and gestures to Cloud to sit at the small kitchen table.
“Oh, water is just fine,” Cloud quickly says.
“No need to be shy, Cloud,” Sephiroth chuckles. “But if it’s water you want, water you’ll get.”
“Uhm, maybe water mixed with some orange juice?” Cloud asks sheepishly, and Sephiroth grins at him, nodding.
“I made chicken with rice and vegetables. I hope you’ll like it,” Sephiroth says as he adds the orange juice to some water and puts the glass on the table for Cloud to take.
Cloud hums his thanks and takes a sip. “I’m sure I’ll love it. You prepared it in advance?”
“Yes. Sometimes I need to prepare meals for several days when I know I’ll be busy. But I try to cook together with the little rascals as often as possible.”
Cloud smiles softly and runs a hand through his hair. “I used to cook with my mom all the time. I’m still not as good as her, though. Baking is my thing.”
“You don’t only bake pastries, though, right? The bread you sell, you make that as well?”
“Yes, some of it. Others are from stores around the city. Zack is good at baking bread. I prefer making pastries.”
“Zack? The puppy?”
Cloud blinks, thinking about the comparison, and chuckles. “Oh god, he IS a puppy…”
So he’s not the only one giving people other names in his head. He wonders what Sephiroth would call him.
“He’s my best friend. He helped me a lot. Still does.”
“It’s good to have supportive friends. As long as it goes both ways, of course,” Sephiroth says.
They talk about everything and nothing at all. Cloud could listen to Sephiroth’s voice all day. But even when they don’t talk for a while, Cloud feels comfortable around the man. They’re both content not to have to fill the silence with words all the time.
Sephiroth calls the kids, telling them dinner is ready. He grabs some plates and fills them with rice, chicken and vegetables. It smells mouthwatering and Cloud can’t wait to taste it. The teens help carry jugs of water and juice, cutlery, and plates.
Sephiroth nudges Cloud in the direction of the dining room. There’s a wooden dining table in the centre, large enough to seat at least six people, inviting for family meals and gatherings. Of course, there are flowers set on the table. They look fresh and bright.
There are more framed photos hanging on the cream-coloured walls, among them pictures of flowers and landscapes in black and white. He wonders if Sephiroth might have a passion for photography.
Loz and Yazoo immediately claim their spots at the table, the large window at their backs. Kadaj hesitates for a moment at the chair next to where his father is standing and then thinks otherwise and joins his siblings. Cloud sits down on the free chair on Sephiroth’s left instead.
“It smells wonderful,” Cloud says as he breathes in deeply once more.
“I hope it will taste just as well,” Sephiroth says with a grin. “Enjoy your meal.”
They start eating, and the teenagers talk about their day at school. From what Cloud can tell, they seem to be diligent students and are popular among their classmates. They don’t attend the same classes and Loz was quite upset about it at first. He didn’t want to part from his brothers and Cloud sees he’s especially clingy with Yazoo.
The teenagers soon get bored talking with the adults and instead turn to entertain each other. They’re cute and Cloud wants to learn more about the heartwarming family.
“How come you decided to take them in?” Cloud asks Sephiroth, only realising a second later that the question is quite personal, and he quickly adds, “You don't have to answer that. I got too nosy, sorry.”
Sephiroth doesn't reply at first and Cloud thinks he must have fucked up and another apology is ready on his tongue, but then the man lets out a hum and says, “I didn't have a… good childhood. I didn't have the protection and love a child needs. But then someone came along and rescued me. He became my family. And I wanted to do the same for them.”
Cloud swallows around a lump in his throat. He wants to reach out and hold Sephiroth’s hand, but he doesn’t know how the man would take it.
“I’m glad they have you. Every child deserves a loving home.”
Sephiroth smiles with a nod. “You weren’t born in Midgar, were you?”
“Nah, I’m from Nibelheim. Most people don’t know-”
“Nibelheim?” Sephiroth interrupts him, eyes widening, and then he laughs softly. “That’s… my hometown.”
Cloud gapes at him, his already big blue eyes growing even larger. “You’re kidding me!”
Sephiroth shakes his head. “It’s true.”
“Maybe we met as children?” Cloud wonders, excitement lacing his voice, and Sephiroth’s smile gets ever so softer. “Maybe we played together and don’t remember and after all this time… we meet again… That’s… so….”
Romantic , Cloud wants to say. He forces the word down quickly and ruffles his hair nervously.
“I don’t think we did,” Sephiroth replies, though. “How old are you?”
“I’m 23!” Cloud blurts out.
“I’m 33. I was already gone when you were born.”
Gone…?
Oh.
“Oh,” Cloud breathes, the excitement all gone and replaced by an ache in his heart.
“I was taken from my father and put under Vincent’s care… It was the best day of my life,” Sephiroth says. “I’m sorry,” he adds right after. “I didn’t mean to dampen the mood.”
Cloud shakes his head, sending his soft spikes dancing. “It’s super alright. I’m glad you found a family. You… you deserve to be happy.”
Sephiroth smiles warmly and inclines his head, his long silky hair falling a bit over his face and Cloud feels the urge to brush them behind the man’s ear. Cloud bites his lip as he looks at the handsome face and beautiful smile.
“Thank you, Cloud,” Sephiroth whispers, and raises his hand to flick one of Cloud’s blonde feather spikes playfully.
Cloud presses his hands over the crown of his head, giggling shyly.
“Dad!” Kadaj’s loud voice interrupts their conversation.
“Yes?” Sephiroth asks and shifts to look at his foster son.
“You bought dessert today, right? Can we have some, please?”
The eyes of the other two teens dart to their father, and Sephiroth releases a sigh.
“Of course.”
He puts his hands on his knees and gets up. Cloud follows suit, and Sephiroth gazes at him questioningly.
“Let me help,” Cloud offers with a sheepish smile.
The silver tree nods, and they go to the kitchen together. Sephiroth produces a bag from one of the cupboards and Cloud gasps.
“That’s… that’s from my shop!”
He must have bought it while Cloud was taking a break or working in the kitchen.
“Yes. We… The kids love your pastries,” Sephiroth says and Cloud swears he can see a faint blush on the man’s ridiculous perfect cheekbones.
Cloud watches as the man pulls the baby sky-blue box from the bag with the shop’s logo printed on it. He wonders what kind of sweets Sephiroth likes. Whenever he saw him at the shop, he had only bought coffee, always with a small shot of vanilla syrup…
“Can you please grab one of the large glass plates from the cupboard?” Sephiroth asks Cloud and motions to the left.
He retrieves one, as instructed by Sephiroth. He places it on the counter, watching as Sephiroth arranges the pastries with precision and care. Cloud’s eyes widen at the selection. Sephiroth got honey vanilla slices with honeycomb, sugarcoated croissants with apricots, cherry cupcakes and blueberry-lemon tarts.
The man’s hands freeze for a moment and Cloud glances at the man, noticing his lips pressed together into a thin line.
“Everything okay?”
Sephiroth coughs slightly. “I, uh, I guess I went a bit overboard.”
Cloud laughs softly. “I’m glad you like my pastries…”
“I do. I mean, we do. The kids and me…”
Is Sephiroth flustered? Cloud thinks it’s very endearing and suits the man who seems so perfect most of the time.
“You’re very good at what you’re doing,” Sephiroth continues. “I’d like to buy them more often but I can’t feed the kids sweets all the time…”
Cloud feels elevated by Sephiroth’s compliment. “Thank you. It means a lot to me.”
Sephiroth just nods and grabs five small plates and Cloud opens several drawers until he finds the cutlery and grabs some spoons, forks and a knife. He blushes, realising once again how comfortable he feels around the other man, and rummages around the kitchen without asking first. Being with Sephiroth feels inexplicably right. But when he looks at Sephiroth, the man is watching him with fondness in his eyes and Cloud’s heart flutters rapidly.
They head back to the dining room where the three teenagers are hunched over a gaming device. Kadaj is playing while Loz and Yazoo are huddled close to their brother, observing his gameplay.
“Kids, turn that off, please,” Sephiroth says, placing the plate with the pastries on the table.
Kadaj does as he is told and Loz hurries to take the plates and cutlery from Cloud’s hands and set up the table.
Cloud leans into Sephiroth’s space and whispers, “I don’t know them that well yet, but… you did a good job, Sephiroth. They’re great kids.”
Sephiroth’s head whips around and he stares at the smaller man, his lips slightly parted. He seems stunned and Cloud grins up at him before pulling out his chair and sitting down.
Sephiroth seems frozen in place for several more moments before he joins him at the table. Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz are already listing off which pastry they want to try.
“Don’t eat too much or you’ll get sick,” Cloud warns them. “Let’s cut them into smaller pieces and you can try them first, okay?”
The teenagers nod excitedly and watch as Cloud takes the knife and carefully starts cutting the goods. He feels Sephiroth’s eyes on him and tries to focus harder on his task. He doesn’t want the lovely evening to end with him losing a finger. That would suck.
He serves the three saplings - he almost giggles at the nickname for the teens - some pieces and then turns to Sephiroth, raising an eyebrow at him.
“What would you like to try?”
Sephiroth blinks, looking startled as if Cloud had pulled him from some deep musing.
“The cupcake… and tart.”
Cloud complies, loads another plate, and sets it in front of Sephiroth with a smile. He chooses the other half of the cupcake for himself and beams into the round. Kadaj grins brightly back at him and takes it as a cue to dig in. The other two follow suit.
The teenagers quickly start a discussion about which of the pastries tastes the best. Cloud nods along to whatever they say.
“Uncle Angeal and Uncle Genesis would love these,” Yazoo says and his brothers both nod.
“We should get them some next time they come to visit,” Sephiroth agrees.
“You can tell me beforehand what they might like and I’ll put them aside for you,” Cloud suggests.
“If it’s not too much trouble… That would be nice of you, Cloud, thank you,” Sephiroth replies.
Cloud feels a pleasant shiver run down his spine whenever Sephiroth says his name.
The saplings start talking about their uncles vividly. Each of them claims they know better which kind of pastries they would prefer and Cloud listens to them with a smile and reacts whenever necessary.
He startles slightly as long fingers slide over his hand under the table. They close around his palm and squeeze lightly. A thumb brushes over his knuckles and Cloud can feel his heart leap into his throat.
Cloud looks at Sephiroth, who is watching his children with a fond smile, and Cloud lowers his head, trying to hide his burning cheeks and the dumb smile pulling at his lips. He moves his hand a bit to link his fingers with Sephiroth’s. He’s relieved when the man doesn’t pull away.
The evening passes quickly and soon Sephiroth has to usher the teenagers to get ready for bed. They don’t want to part from Cloud, but the young baker promises to see them soon again. He also offers to help clean the dishes, but Sephiroth declines.
“You’re a guest and we have a dishwasher,” Sephiroth says with a shrug.
“I had a great time. Thank you for inviting me,” Cloud mutters when Sephiroth accompanies him to the door.
“I enjoyed myself very much,” Sephiroth agrees.
“I hope it was okay to tell them I’d see them soon.”
“Of course. They adore you.”
“I like them, too,” Cloud admits rather shyly. He moves a bit closer to the man, glancing up at him through his long eyelashes. “And… I’ll get to see you as well, right?”
Sephiroth’s eyes wander over Cloud’s face. He leans into the smaller man’s space as well. “Yes… I’d like that.”
“Me, too,” Cloud whispers, licking his lips.
Green eyes dart to the movement and Cloud feels as if he has been burnt - in a good way. Are they about to kiss? Will Sephiroth’s lips taste like the pastries they had? He didn’t wash his mouth afterwards, right? Did he have coffee? Cloud’s mind is blurred as he breathes in the man’s scent. Pine, rose and vanilla. He inhales deeply. Sephiroth’s hand raises and rests gently on Cloud’s cheek, his fingers rubbing over the man’s nape.
“DAD!”
They jump apart and Cloud bumps his head against the door.
“Are you alright?” Sephiroth asks, alerted when Cloud rubs the back of his head.
“I’m good,” Cloud quickly says and then lets out an embarrassed chuckle. “You should check on them.”
“Yeah,” Sephiroth sighs. He looks just as disappointed as Cloud feels, but he quickly channels his expression and flashes the smaller man a smile. “Do you live far away? I can call an uber-”
“No, no, my apartment is close by. No worries! And thanks.”
“Get home safely,” Sephiroth says warmly.
“DAAAAD!”
That’s Kadaj yelling and Sephiroth sighs with some irritation.
“Fuck,” he mutters, and why does Cloud find Sephiroth even sexier when a curse leaves those incredibly sensual lips?
Cloud giggles and opens the door. “Good night.”
“Good night, Cloud.”
When Cloud closes the door behind himself he stops, turns and stares back at it. The soft light of the hallway is illuminating through the small gap on the floor. He hears Sephiroth’s footsteps moving away from the entrance. Cloud sighs and lets his head fall back. He closes his eyes and runs his fingers through his unruly spikes, a silent laugh escaping his lips.
He strolls back home, hands in his pockets, a smile plastered on his face. He’s in love. So deep in love already. Cloud isn’t sure if it’s deep. He has never been in love before. He thought, maybe once, but this feels different. It’s consuming and his heart is pounding so hard it almost hurts. It’s a good pain though, and Cloud can’t stop grinning.
Chapter Text
He arrives at his apartment and is greeted by the meowing of his two cats. Cloud snickers as they wrap around his legs, nudging them with their tiny heads and he carefully tries to enter without stepping on his two babies.
“Yes, yes, I know, you two are hungry,” Cloud says and switches on the lights in the kitchen.
He fetches a can from the box on the top of a shelf and opens it. Immediately, the little creatures start purring and mewling. He grabs their bowls and evenly piles the food into them. As soon as he places the bowls on the floor, the cats eagerly rush to the food, filling the kitchen with the sounds of their munching.
Cloud leans against the counter, crosses his arms and watches them devouring their meal. He wonders if Sephiroth likes cats. Maybe the little saplings would like them. He could invite them over… He could cook for them and Sephiroth… He’ll have to ask him if they have any allergies.
Cloud shakes his head and lets out a groan. He’s getting ahead of himself. Even if Sephiroth was interested in him, who says he doesn’t simply want a one-time thing? He’s hot, he probably has a long line of people waiting to go out with him. He has seen the women - and occasionally men - outside the flower shop, flirting with him, touching his shoulders when they giggled…
Cloud felt annoyed seeing it. But his heart soars, thinking about Sephiroth’s fingers lacing with his own, his thumb caressing his skin… They had almost kissed…
“Fuck, I’m in love, I’m so in love, babies,” Cloud whines and slumps down to the floor.
Claw and Knives blink at him. Sephiroth sometimes blinks like that. The man isn’t just a tall tree, he’s a big silver cat. He wonders what Sephiroth’s hair feels like. It looks very well taken care of. He must use a lot of shampoo for all that hair… It would fall over Cloud like a veil if Sephiroth trapped his body beneath him…
Cloud slaps his hands to his heated cheeks and squeezes his eyes shut. No, no! No inappropriate daydreaming or he won’t be able to look at the man anymore.
A little mreow brings his attention to the white fluffy cat climbing on his lap. Claw stares up at him with big blue eyes, not unlike his own. Cloud sighs and gently runs his fingers through the cat’s fur. Knives wants some love as well and joins his brother on Cloud’s lap. The man giggles and gathers the two in his arms, burying his face in soft white and grey fur, and closes his eyes to listen to their endearing purrs.
The floor isn’t very comfortable, and soon Cloud gets up to get ready for bed. He has to wake up early and already knows he won’t get much sleep. His heart is still beating too fast and his mind is filled with Sephiroth, Sephiroth, Sephiroth…
He dreams of long fingers attentively working with flowers, hands gracing his palms and cheeks, a deep voice murmuring into his ear…
Cloud snaps his eyes open as his alarm clock goes off. He can’t move freely and looks down at himself. Claw is sleeping on his chest and Knives is cuddled close to his side. It always pains him to move them, but he gently nudges the little cats, scratches their heads and wiggles out of bed until they leave by themselves.
He has a slight skip in his step when he walks to the bakery that morning. He whistles while preparing some caramel cake and smiles brightly at Biggs and Wedge as they start their work day. His employees stare at him and then turn to each other, surprised by Cloud’s especially good mood.
Zack has no problem addressing Cloud’s big smile.
“So I take it your evening with Sephiroth went well?”
“Yup,” Cloud says, popping the ‘p’.
“What did you guys do?”
“He invited me home for dinner. Well, one of his sons did.”
Zack gasps and rushes to his friend, clasping his shoulders and turning him around. “You were at his place? With his little gremlins?”
“They’re not gremlins. They’re really sweet kids. They seem to like me.”
“That’s great! If you get along with his children, it will be a lot easier to win his heart,” Zack says, nodding eagerly.
“I think I already got closer to him,” Cloud mutters, running a hand through his hair. “I… I’m sure we almost kissed before one of his kids yelled for him.”
Zack laughs out loud and pulls Cloud into his arms. “I knew he couldn’t resist you, Cloudy! He’d be a fool and blind if he didn’t fall for you. You know, if I was into guys, you’d be mine,” he adds with a wink and a wide grin, ruffling Cloud’s hair as he steps back from the hug.
Cloud blushes lightly, shaking his head. “Stop it,” he murmurs and pushes Zack away.
His friend laughs brightly. “It’s just so easy to tease you. You know I love you man.”
“And… I love you,” Cloud replies shyly.
He does love Zack. As a friend. A brother. He’s one of the most important people in his life. Saying those words has become easier even though it's still awkward.
They work side by side and fill the bakery display counter with mouthwatering tarts, cakes and cupcakes. Wedge is piling bread and rolls in baskets and Biggs makes sure every table is clean and the flowers have enough water. Cloud inhales deeply and closes his eyes, exhaling with a smile. It smells heavenly.
He wonders if Sephiroth will come by today. Sometimes he’s too busy at his shop. The man is working on the decorations for the wedding, so he might have no time to visit.
The thought bums Cloud out a bit. But maybe Cloud can make Sephiroth’s favourite coffee and bring it over to him. The baker nods at himself, deep in thought. Zack and the others watch him with amusement, exchanging knowing glances and grins.
They’re all quickly distracted by the onrush of customers. Cloud’s mind still goes back to Sephiroth every so often and he almost screams in surprise when the man is suddenly standing in front of him in the flesh.
Sephiroth is gazing at him with his sexy smile and slightly tilted head. Cloud slaps a hand over his heart and gapes at the man of his dreams.
“You okay?” Sephiroth asks.
Pull yourself together, soldier!
“Yes, sorry, I was just… surprised to see you.”
“I always come here when I can, Cloud. Did you not expect to see me today?”
“I-I thought you’d be busy with the wedding and all…”
Sephiroth leans forward and his scent of vanilla and roses wafts over to Cloud. He breathes in deeply automatically.
“Would you have been disappointed had I not come?” Sephiroth asks.
Cloud blinks at the beautiful man, cheeks heating up. “I, errr-”
Sephiroth’s smile grows wider and he starts to chuckle. “Cute. I’ll have my usual, please.”
Cute??
Cloud nods, his face reddening even more as he moves to prepare his crush’s coffee. He slides it over the counter and Sephiroth puts down his coins.
“You might want to consider getting your customers a loyalty card.”
“A loyalty card?” Cloud wonders. “That’s a great idea, actually. I have to think about that. Thanks.”
10 coffees and you get a kiss, silver tree!
Nah, he'd kiss him for less. For free. He'd kiss Sephiroth right here and now if he knew Sephiroth wouldn't push him away.
The man of his thoughts hums, slurping his coffee comfortably. Cloud watches him for a moment. It’s pretty quiet right now. It’s the perfect moment to ask… To gather his courage and ask—!
Just ask!
“I would like to return the favour and invite you and your kids for some cake,” Cloud says, the words rushing out of his mouth and he wonders if his sentence was even understandable for Sephiroth.
The man does his cat-blinking, a fond smile forming on his lips. “I would love that. And I know the boys will, too. You don’t owe me anything, though, Cloud.”
Cloud can’t keep the shy smile from his face. “I know. I’d still like to invite you.”
Sephiroth releases a soft chuckle. “Thank you.”
“So, next Saturday, are you free then? I have the afternoon off…”
“I close the shop around 2 pm. About an hour should suffice to get ready. Is that alright?”
“Yes, of course! 3 pm it is then. Do you have any pastry wishes?” Cloud asks.
Sephiroth shakes his head, his silver strands of hair moving like waves around his face. “We’ll love everything you provide us with, Cloud.”
Fuck, stop saying my name like that. I want to climb him… like a big silver tree.
“Great. Awesome,” Cloud says, giving Sephiroth a thumbs-up and cringes inside. “I’m looking forward to it.”
“Cloud-”
“Oh, by the way! I have two cats. I hope none of you is allergic.”
“We’re all good,” Sephiroth replies. “But Cloud-”
“That’s great, phew, I’m relieved. They’re good kids- I mean cats! Fuck,” Cloud adds in a whisper.
Sephiroth is laughing silently, his shoulders shaking. “Cloud,” he says for the third time now, “breathe. And… I still need your address.”
Cloud’s eyes widen. “Oh. Yes, right, oh god, sorry?” He chuckles nervously. “Wait a second, please.”
He grabs a business card from the counter, pulls the pencil from the breast pocket of his apron, and scribbles his address on the back of the card. He holds it out to Sephiroth. Their fingers brush when the florist takes it with a thankful nod. Cloud wants to feel these long fingers all over his-
“I’m sure we’ll meet before Saturday since you’ve got me hooked on your coffee and I need my daily dose,” Sephiroth teases and Cloud’s cheeks flush.
Only my coffee, silver tree man?
Cloud forces his flustered smile into a smug grin. “Is that so? Well, I’ll see you tomorrow, then.”
Sephiroth’s eyes twinkle with amusement. He raises the coffee cup to his lips to take another sip, inclines his head in a bow and leaves the bakery. Cloud looks after him, his heart pounding rapidly.
I’m jealous of a coffee cup.
And then it hits him for real. He just invited Sephiroth to his home. And his three kids. Silver tree and the saplings will be in his apartment, eating his food, sitting in his kitchen-
He’ll have to tidy up, and make sure everything is spotless. The cats are shedding fur like crazy right now. Hopefully, they won’t mind. He has to buy refreshments. He only always has water at home, maybe a beer now and then. What do teens like? Sephiroth had orange juice and-
“You look like you’re about to faint, Cloudy.”
Zack’s voice tears Cloud from his thoughts and he whips his head around to look at his friend.
“I just invited Sephiroth and his kids to come over Saturday afternoon.”
“Oh my god, you did?” Zack claps his hands together excitedly. “You should have invited him alone. For dinner. Watch a nice movie, snuggle up under a blanket and… you know.” The idiot wiggles his eyebrows.
Cloud stares at him with pink cheeks. “F-Fuck off, Zack!”
The customer he hadn’t noticed standing right at the bar, gasps and then giggles nervously when Cloud turns to look at them. Cloud apologises several times and finally takes their order.
Before he knows it, it’s Saturday. He wanted to work in the morning but his friends and employees forced him to take the whole day off so he could prepare for his guests comfortably.
“They act as if I can’t handle having guests,” Cloud grumbles as he pulls a batch of chocolate and banana pop-tarts from the oven. “Special guests, but still…”
Knives lets out a meow as he watches Cloud pour chocolate sauce over the tarts and drizzle them with a mix of crushed nuts.
“I know, right?!” Cloud says to his cat.
He prepares strawberry slices and decides to make some simple apple crumble that the teens can mix with ice cream if they want to. He almost drools at the scent filling his kitchen. Cloud is usually quite self-conscious but he knows he’s good at baking. Great even. Amazing. Or else he would never have thought about opening a bakery, after all.
Cloud cleans up the kitchen, vacuums his apartment, makes sure the cat litter box is tidy as well, and slumps down on the couch. He lets his head fall back and releases a sigh. His eyes flicker to the clock at the wall. One hour to go. Hopefully, Sephiroth didn’t have a stressful day. They should have exchanged numbers in case the florist needed more time to get ready.
He takes the time to get changed. Cloud puts on his black skinny jeans and a deep green v-neck shirt. He pulls a cardigan over his outfit that he just bought last week and looks at himself in the mirror. Cloud pushes at the bags under his eyes and sighs. He had been nervous the evening before - he still is - and once again scribbled pastry and beverage ideas into his sketchbook late into the night.
He shuffles around the apartment, picking up things here and there to tidy up only to put them right back where they were in the first place. And then the doorbell rings and Cloud almost trips over his feet.
He rushes to the door, runs a hand through his hair and hits the buzzer. He can hear Kadaj’s laughter and several feet walking up the stairs. Cloud’s lips turn into a smile as the teens come into view, followed by their super tall, super handsome dad.
“Cloud!” Kadaj calls out and wraps his arms around the baker’s waist, almost knocking both of them to the ground.
“Kadaj,” Sephiroth’s smooth voice says and his foster son lets go of Cloud again, grinning widely at the man.
“I’m just so happy we can spend more time with Cloud!”
Cloud chuckles. “I’m happy to have you all here.”
He steps aside and lets the boys in. Yazoo greets him with a smile while Loz shakes his arm excitedly and follows Kadaj into the apartment. Sephiroth lets out a sigh. Cloud can see he’s holding something behind his back and suddenly there’s a burst of colours and various scents held up in his face.
Cloud blinks, stunned by the beautiful bouquet. He recognises the lush white roses and the baby’s breath that create a delicate texture around its edges. There’s a bunch of bright yellow flowers set as the focal point and, if he remembers correctly, those muted green leaves are eucalyptus.
It looks wonderful and Cloud’s heart soars at the sight. He looks at Sephiroth with parted lips. The florist is glancing back at him and Cloud swears he can see a faint pink blush on his cheeks.
“Sephiroth, it’s beautiful, thank you so much,” Cloud whispers as he takes the bouquet and holds it close to his chest, the petals of the flowers tickling his face. He breathes in the sweet, floral scent with its earthy notes and smiles warmly. It smells vibrant but also soothing.
He notices Sephiroth staring at him and his heart stutters. The florist clears his throat and says, “I’m glad you like it.”
“You made it yourself, I guess?”
“Of course.”
Cloud’s smile grows wider. They finally enter the apartment as well and the young man wonders, “What are these yellow flowers called? I can’t remember.”
“Those are chrysanthemum.”
“Chrysanthemum,” Cloud repeats. “I love them.”
The teens are standing in the hallway, looking at the adults with grins and knowing eyes. Cloud flushes even deeper and Sephiroth once again coughs. The host just chuckles nervously and herds the boys into the kitchen and motions them to sit down at the table.
He already set it up earlier with plates, glasses and cutlery. He also poured the juices into large glass jugs and threw an eggshell-coloured table runner over the dark wood of the table.
“The cats are shy at first but they will come out eventually,” Cloud says. “But promise me you’ll be gentle with them. They might scratch or bite you if you’re rough or too loud.”
“We promise,” Yazoo says who looks almost excited for once. Loz and Kadaj nod along.
Cloud looks around his shelves, trying to find a suitable vase for the flowers. He finally finds one but it’s high up and he can’t quite reach it. Sephiroth notices quickly and comes to his aid, standing close behind him, his chest almost touching his back and radiating heat.
“Here,” the tall tree says as he hands the vase to Cloud.
“Thank you.” Cloud swallows hard and ducks his head.
He quickly fills the vase with water and puts the flowers in. He places it on the table and can’t suppress a wide smile. Cloud turns to the cupboard where he stored the pastries inside to keep them safe from the cats.
“So, I prepared a lemon tart, strawberry slices and chocolate banana pop-tarts. I also made some apple crumble.”
“Oh, wow, Cloud, it’s so much!” Kadaj exclaims excitedly.
“I want to try everything,” Loz decides.
“It all looks delicious,” Yazoo says.
Sepiroth stares at Cloud, mouth agape. “It’s a lot, Cloud. I hope you didn’t stress yourself out too much. One cake would have been more than enough.”
Cloud shrugs, grinning sheepishly. “I love baking. It was no trouble at all.”
He spreads the pastries on the table and sits down next to Sephiroth. His table isn’t big so they sit quite close and their arms brush.
“I have vanilla ice cream for the apple crumble if any of you wants to try that.”
The teens are all beaming at him happily and Cloud scratches his cheek, smiling back at them. He pours them all some water and juice and the boys pile their plates with Cloud’s baked goods.
Cloud prepares some coffee for Sephiroth and himself and hands the man a cup. The florist is enjoying a strawberry slice and compliments Cloud on its great taste. The young man loves to hear Sephiroth praise him.
Kadaj and Loz eagerly tell Cloud about an upcoming sports tournament at their school and ask him to come to cheer them on. Their invitation takes Cloud aback and he looks at Sephiroth, wondering how their father is taking it. But the man just smiles at him and Cloud says he wouldn’t miss it for the world.
At some point, Claw and Knives finally make their appearance. They carefully step inside the kitchen and Yazoo lets out a gasp as he sees them. He holds Loz back who is about to hurriedly get up from his chair and whispers to him not to scare them off.
Cloud knows he can approach them and walks to the little cats, picking them up and holding them gently in his arms. He slowly steps towards the table to where the teenagers are sitting.
“Hold out your hand and let them sniff it,” Cloud tells Yazoo and the boy does as he is told.
“They’re so pretty,” Yazoo whispers.
“Their names are Claw and Knives. They’re siblings and about two years old now.”
“Oh, yes, look at all the little knives this one has,” Kadaj coos and pats Knives’ little paw.
Cloud is glad the cats are behaving well. They cuddle closer to Cloud’s chest, still a bit scared of so many new people but at least they’re not panicking. He turns his armful of cats to Sephiroth who has a look of awe on his face as he takes in the little creatures.
“They’re adorable,” the florist says softly. “Have you had them since they were kittens?”
Cloud nods. “Yeah. They were about four months old. The cat of a friend got pregnant unexpectedly and she couldn’t keep them all.”
“Papa, can we have a cat as well?” Loz asks, sticking out his bottom lip.
“Oh, yes, Dad, please!” Kadaj begs.
Cloud grimaces. “Sorry…”
Sephiroth shakes his head, huffing a laugh. “It’s not your fault. The cats are very cute. It was to be expected.” He turns to the saplings. “But we’ll have that conversation another time, boys.”
The teens reluctantly agree and continue eating their food while patting the cats now and then. Cloud lets them go after a bit, so they can decide whether to stay and satisfy their curiosity or return to their hideout.
To his surprise, the cats stay. Knives winds around the saplings’ legs and shies away whenever they try to pat his head. The boys don’t seem to mind and just coo and talk to him. Claw jumps on Sephiroth’s lap and Cloud quickly comes to take him away but the florist shakes his head.
“Let him,” Sephiroth says and runs his hand over the soft fur.
“He’ll get you all hairy.”
“I don’t mind.”
Cloud watches with awe as Claw rolls up into a little bun and starts purring, clearly comfortable with Sephiroth’s lap and gentle fingers. He wants to take out his phone and take a picture but he doesn’t think it would be appropriate.
Also, he can’t stop staring at Sephiroth’s fingers clad with silver rings. He’s never been much the jewellery guy. He has one earring and that’s it. But the rings on Sephiroth’s thumb, index and small finger just make his hands look even sexier and he craves to have them all over his body.
Cloud forces his eyes away and instead continues eating his tart. The teens shovel more pastries into their mouths and then go exploring - with Cloud’s permission - which leaves him alone with Sephiroth whose lap is still occupied. Cloud wishes he was a cat and could claim the man has his bed.
“The boys really like you, Cloud. I’m glad you welcomed them so warmly.”
“They’re good kids. I like them.”
I like you.
Sephiroth’s smile grows wider and there is so much warmth in his eyes that Cloud wants to let out a sigh and kiss him.
With Claw content on Sephiroth's lap, a sense of intimacy grows, enticing Cloud to linger nearby. Their connection seems to deepen in the quiet moments shared, unspoken yet electric. The cat, usually hesitant, now seems comfortable, adding to the serene atmosphere. A simple glance from Sephiroth ignites a spark in Cloud’s heart, yearning for more than just friendship.
He can hear the saplings roaming about the apartment. He has nothing to hide. His very private stuff is hidden away safely.
Cloud makes another coffee for Sephiroth and they talk for a while - about the wedding event, their ideas for the approaching summer festival and also more personal things. Cloud learns the florist loves to read and he tells him his favourite book titles. The baker shares his little passion for drawing and fortunately, Sephiroth doesn’t pester him into showing his sketches when Cloud hesitates.
To Cloud's surprise, Sephiroth enjoys video games. He first thinks it must be because of the teenagers but quickly learns Sephiroth is a bit of a gamer and a nerd and Cloud loves that. He needs to get Sephiroth to play with him sometimes.
The cats abandon the two of them and instead let themselves be entertained by the teenagers. Sephiroth offers to help Cloud clean up but the baker immediately refuses.
They move to the living room after a while where the saplings are playing with the little gremlins. Sephiroth takes a look at Cloud’s music collection, commenting on his good taste in music. He also catches sight of the several games gathered in the next shelf and seems kind of excited that Cloud enjoys gaming as well.
They sit on the couch, watch the boys and talk more. Cloud feels so comfortable around them, that he’s quite sad when Sephiroth gets up and announces it’s getting late and they shouldn’t occupy more of Cloud’s time.
“Thank you for the delicious pastries!” Kadaj says and hugs Cloud.
“I'm happy you enjoyed them.”
Loz and Yazoo thank him, too and Sephiroth looks proud of his sons’ good behaviour.
“So you’re going to buy a cat?” Cloud whispers as he brings them to the door and Sephiroth chuckles.
“I have to think about it. But it might be good for the boys to learn some responsibility. I’d take care of it as well, of course.”
The boys put on their shoes and scramble outside the apartment, waving goodbye to Cloud and already running downstairs, leaving their father behind.
Sephiroth turns to Cloud who is leaning against the frame of the door and watches the florist’s beautiful hand run through his silky hair. The silver tree smiles at Cloud and steps closer, causing the baker’s heart to trip.
Sephiroth brushes the knuckle of his forefinger over Cloud’s nose and taps his chin. “Thank you for today.”
Cloud is once again almost too stunned to reply anything but he quickly catches himself and says, “It was my pleasure. Thank you for coming. I like having you around. And the kids,” he adds, blushing.
Sephiroth’s grin widens and he winks at Cloud, puts his hands into the pockets of his trousers and follows his kids.
Cloud stands there for several more moments, the ghost of Sephiroth’s touches still lingering. His cats are rubbing along his legs, and he’s brought back to reality. He quickly ushers them inside before they can escape.
—
Sephiroth is quiet on his way home. His boys walk in front of him, talking about video games, pastries and cats. Sephiroth smiles to himself and lets out a sharp breath through his nose.
Cloud is warm and caring. He’s a bit awkward sometimes and talks too fast when he’s nervous but it only adds to his charm. Sephiroth likes being around him. Not to ignore the fact how handsome the young baker is. He really has to be careful not to stare too much at him.
Sephiroth feels his heart acting strangely whenever he’s around Cloud. This weird fluttering feeling… It had annoyed him at first. But he got kind of used to it and now he doesn’t mind it anymore.
Since it’s a Saturday, the boys don’t go to bed early. They ask Sephiroth if they can watch a movie and he lets them. He stands at the door of the living room, watching the teens as they cuddle together on the couch, flipping through the streaming services for something worth watching.
They’re sixteen already. They’re growing up so fast and Sephiroth isn’t ready yet for them to become adults. He’s only glad that none of them has dragged home a lover yet. He really doesn’t know how he would handle that. He’s not really a good example for his boys when it comes to relationships. He hasn’t had one in the three years they have been with him now. And even before that Sephiroth mostly had flings.
“Did you guys have fun today?” he asks and sits down on the armrest of the couch.
“Yes, Cloud is so cool,” Kadaj says. “I like him a lot.”
“You like him a lot, too, don’t you, father?” Yazoo wonders out loud, a mischievous grin on his face.
Sephiroth hesitates. “Of… Of course, I like him. I wouldn’t be spending time with him if I didn’t.”
Yazoo rolls his eyes. “You know what I mean. You like him.”
Sephiroth stares at him with widened eyes. His heart is making that weird stuttering again. His gaze flickers away to the screen of the television.
“Would you mind that? If I liked him? If he was around more?”
Kadaj chuckles and then lets out a dramatic sigh. “Dad, as we said… We like Cloud. And we want you to be happy, you know? You can’t be alone forever.”
“I have you guys,” Sephiroth mumbles.
“But it’s not the same,” Yazoo says. “You should have a partner, father. A boyfriend. A lover. It would be good for you.”
Sephiroth gapes at his son. “Yazoo…”
“I’m sixteen.” The boy shrugs. “I know all about sex-”
“Oh my god,” Sephiroth mutters under his breath and puts his hands on his face.
Kadaj laughs and Loz giggles nervously.
“But seriously, Dad,” Kadaj starts. “If you like Cloud, you should… go for it. We’ve all seen how you two look at each other…”
Sephiroth lets his hands fall on his lap. He doesn’t want to be alone forever. He knows that. And his boys know that. He’s just glad his sons don’t mind. They have been with him for only three years. He hopes they will stay with him for even longer. Even if they’re not his by blood… They’re his family. And Sephiroth needs his family to accept his future partner.
He shakes his head. He’s thinking about things that aren’t even sure yet. He knows Cloud is attracted to him. A lot of people are. And most of them don’t want a relationship with him. They want sex and then leave after a short while. He can be quite cold and stoic. He has three kids. He had a problematic childhood. Sephiroth knows he’s not easy. And Cloud has only seen his good side so far.
“I’ll think about it…”
“Oh, and about the cat-” Loz begins but Sephiroth quickly interrupts him, “I’LL THINK ABOUT THAT, TOO!”
The days go by and Sephiroth wonders if he should just ask Cloud out. He would never call himself a coward but each time Cloud smiles so beautifully and those big blue eyes gaze at him… Sephiroth loses his courage. He doesn’t even know why. He’s actually sure Cloud would say yes. But his heart is beating so fast and he wonders… He wonders if…
He wonders if he has genuine feelings for Cloud.
And then the baker just vanishes over the next few days. Sephiroth is a bit worried, to be honest, and he curses himself for never asking for Cloud’s number.
The chipper guy is there, though. Zack. Cloud’s friend. He could ask him where the cute baker is.
Zack notices him staring and waves at Sephiroth with a wide smile. Sephiroth nods at him and steps closer.
“Why the deep frown?” Zack asks and rests his arms on the counter.
“I… was wondering where Cloud is? I haven’t seen him for the past few days. Is he busy?”
The man crosses his arms over his chest, his grin growing bigger. “Oh, Cloud, huh? You’re here for him?”
“And the coffee.”
Zack chuckles and his expression softens. He lets out a sigh. “Cloud is sick.”
Sephiroth looks sharply at Zack. “What? He’s sick?”
“He pushed himself too much,” Zack sighs. “He wanted the recipes for the new pastries to be perfect by the time the summer festival starts… He must have forgotten all around him again… He doesn’t take good care of himself when he focuses on one thing too much. Forgets to eat, doesn’t sleep enough…”
“Fuck… That little fool.” Sephiroth lets out a long breath, thinking. “I’d… I’d like to visit him and bring him some food. If that’s okay.”
Zack beams at the man and nods eagerly. “Of course! I know Cloud will be thrilled. He can’t shut up about you,” he adds, winking.
Sephiroth stares at the man, lips parted, and Zack laughs at his expression.
“You know where he lives. You’ve been to his place before. Just recently, right?” He grins widely at Sephiroth. “I’m glad. Cloud needs more good people in his life.”
“What do you mean?”
Zack sighs and scratches the back of his head. “He didn’t have friends growing up in Nibelheim. He was shy and aloof. Well, he still is, I guess?” Zack laughs good-naturedly. “He had a hard time getting to know others. I was his roommate when he came to Midgar. He couldn’t afford a place and I had just broken up with someone… It was good timing. For a while, I thought he didn’t like me. But he only needed time to warm up to me and the big city.”
“Good thing you were his roommate and not someone else who would have given up on him quickly,” Sephiroth says, and Zack nods.
The puppy — because that’s what Zack is in Sephiroth’s eyes — smirks at him widely and says, “He got along with you quickly. That’s a rare thing. He’s still awkward around my girlfriend sometimes. But… he likes you.”
Sephiroth feels a blush rising to his cheeks. He never blushes. But it has happened a lot more when it comes to Cloud. And those fluttering wings in his chest… He clears his throat and looks away from Zack.
“You better be good to him,” Zack says, more serious now. He turns around, scratching his neck again. “I have to finish up here… You should visit him soon.”
Sephiroth nods, even though Zack can’t see it. “I will.”
—
Cloud is standing in the kitchen, getting a fresh glass of water. He feels tired and hot. His head hurts. He wishes his cats could bring him whatever he needed. But he’s their servant, not the other way around.
There’s a knock at the door and Cloud turns at the sound. He blinks slowly, wondering if he just imagined it. But then the doorbell rings and Cloud pulls his cardigan tighter around his body and shuffles to the door and opens it.
“Sephiroth…?”
Cloud blinks sleepily at the tall man.
“Sorry, did I wake you? I made soup,” Sephiroth says, his expression almost sheepish.
“Oh, for… for me?”
“Yes. May I come in?”
Cloud feels a bit self-conscious. His hair is a wild mess, he’s wearing a pyjama with a Chocobo pattern, and he has dark circles under his eyes. He doesn’t want to turn the man away, though. Cloud’s heart is dancing happily that Sephiroth has come to visit him.
He opens the door wider, letting Sephiroth inside. Claw and Knives immediately come running from Cloud’s bedroom and snuggle up to Sephiroth’s long legs. They meow and chirp at him and Sephiroth smiles, kneeling to pat their heads. Cloud’s heart melts at the sight.
“I forgot to bring them a snack,” Sephiroth mutters. “Next time then…”
Next time .
“They’ll get you all hairy again,” Cloud says and bends down to pick up Claw.
His vision blurs and he almost falls over, but Sephiroth catches him by the elbow and pulls him closer.
“Careful,” Sephiroth whispers.
Cloud glances up, up, up, until his eyes meet Sephiroth’s. The man looks worried, but there’s also a warm glint of amusement in his eyes.
“Sorry,” Cloud mumbles.
He’s about to pull away but Sephiroth wraps his arm around Cloud’s waist, supporting him while he walks them to the kitchen and sits Cloud down on one of the chairs. Cloud feels like he’s going to combust any second. And it’s not the fever’s fault.
“Did you take any medicine?” Sephiroth asks.
“Yeah. Zack brought me some stuff.”
“Good. Would you like some soup now or later?”
“I… I haven’t eaten yet.”
He’s met with a stern look of narrowed emerald eyes and Cloud grimaces.
“You need to take better care of yourself,” Sephiroth scolds him and Cloud lets his head drop. He doesn’t like disappointing Sephiroth.
There are fingers on his chin, nudging him to look up again. Cloud hesitatingly meets Sephiroth’s eyes. The man looks at him with a frown on his pretty face and brings his hand up to Cloud’s forehead. Cloud sighs and closes his eyes. Sephiroth’s hand is cool and feels good on his heated skin.
“Back to bed with you,” Sephiroth decides. “I’ll heat the soup while you rest.”
The man’s arm returns, but this time it wraps around Cloud’s shoulder instead of his waist. He helps Cloud to the bedroom and tucks the younger man under the blankets. Claw and Knives follow them. They jump on the bed and cuddle up to Cloud. Sephiroth smiles at the sight and runs his fingers through Cloud’s soft hair.
“I’ll be right back.”
Cloud looks after him. He can’t believe Sephiroth is here. Taking care of him. He can hear him working in the kitchen. He’s probably looking for a pot to reheat the soup. Cloud wants to feel giddy about the fact that Sephiroth cooked for him. The man had made him soup. That had to mean something, right?
But Cloud is exhausted, and his eyes feel heavy. His cheeks are hurting from the wide smile on his face. Maybe it’s just a fever dream. But he enjoys every second of it.
He must have dozed off for a few minutes and when he opens his eyes again, he sees Sephiroth watching him, long fingers brushing strands of hair from his face.
“Hey,” Sephiroth whispers.
“Hey, you…”
“Do you want to sleep? I’ll just put the soup back into the pot.”
“No,” Cloud says, pushing himself up from the bed to sit more comfortably. “I would like to eat it now.”
Sephiroth smiles and grabs the tray, carefully setting it over Cloud’s lap. Cloud’s mouth waters as he looks at the steaming bowl of soup. The rich, golden vegetable broth is mingled with chunks of tender carrots, potatoes, onions and tomatoes. A burst of green, fresh spinach and chopped parsley is floating on the surface. A crusty slice of bread rests next to the bowl and it all smells heavenly…
He looks at Sephiroth, almost tearing up. The last time someone cooked for him was his mom back in Nibelheim. That was several years ago. Zack isn’t a great cook. He is good at heating instant meals and ordering food.
“Cloud, everything okay?” Sephiroth asks.
“Yes,” Cloud sniffs.
He only realises he started crying when Sephiroth catches a tear with his finger.
“Thank you so much for this,” Cloud cries and rubs his eyes, trying to keep the tears at bay.
Sephiroth hushes him softly. He climbs onto the bed and settles next to Cloud, tucking his arm around the smaller man and brushing his hand up and down Cloud’s arm soothingly. Sephiroth takes the spoon, plunges it carefully into the bowl and brings it close to his lips to blow at it. Then he holds it out to Cloud, who parts his lips and accepts the spoonful of soup. Sephiroth watches as Cloud chews, swallows and releases an “Oh.”
“Good?”
Cloud nods eagerly. “So good.”
Sephiroth chuckles. He looks pleased. The man continues feeding Cloud, tears small chunks from the bread and brings them to Cloud’s lips until most of the food is gone and the patient is full.
Cloud pats his stomach and closes his eyes. “Thank you, that was amazing…”
“Get better quickly, Cloud. And next time you’re not feeling well, you tell me.”
“Really…? I don’t have your number…,” Cloud mumbles.
“Right. Where is your phone?”
Cloud points at the night table and Sephiroth grabs the device. He lets Cloud enter his passcode and takes it back to type in his contact information.
“Now you do.”
Cloud is staring at the screen of his phone. At the name and number. Finally.
“I heard from Zack that you… overworked yourself,” Sephiroth says and Cloud curses Zack in his mind. “You really have to look better after yourself. Promise me.”
Cloud slowly turns his head to gaze at Sephiroth. “I… I didn’t mean to worry you or the others… I’m sorry.”
Sephiroth shakes his head. He raises his hand to hold Cloud’s chin with his thumb and forefinger. “Promise me you will do better.”
Cloud swallows. He nods. “I promise.”
Sephiroth’s face softens, a smile tucking at his lips. “Good.”
He gets up from the bed, taking the tray to bring it back to the kitchen. Cloud hears water splashing into the sink and after a while, Sephiroth returns, wiping his hands on a towel.
“There’s still some more soup and bread left. I will let you rest now, Cloud.”
“Oh, oh yes, of course,” Cloud whispers, feeling sad Sephiroth is already leaving. “Thank you so much again. For… For taking your time to look after me.”
Sephiroth smiles warmly and steps closer, sitting down on the edge of the bed and brushes his knuckles over Cloud’s heated cheek. “You’re welcome. Now get healthy, okay?”
Cloud bobbs his head, not trusting his voice at that moment. Sephiroth pulls the blanket more over Cloud’s body and pats the man’s head.
“See you soon,” Sephiroth says.
Cloud watches him leave and sinks further into the mattress when he hears the door open and close again.
He closes his eyes and smiles widely, letting out a raspy chuckle. He’ll be back on his feet in no time.
Then he remembers he cried in front of Sephiroth and screams into his pillow.

Chapter Text
Cloud smiles down at his phone. His heart flutters at the simple text by Sephiroth.
“I’ll come by a bit later today.”
Since the florist had visited to look after him, they exchanged several texts, and Cloud is, well, on cloud nine. Zack would constantly tease him and talk about safe sex which earned the idiot a few bruises on his shoulders.
Cloud is happy and feels he is going in the right direction with Sephiroth. They have coffee together, they talk and text, Cloud goes to the flower shop and Sephiroth shows him how to arrange flowers, the saplings like him…
He can’t keep his eyes from drifting to Sephiroth’s lips all the time, wondering what they feel and taste like. And his hands, oh god, his hands… Cloud never thought he’d have a thing for them but Sephiroth’s fingers are so long and elegant and he craves to touch them, link their hands, have them run through his hair and over his body…
Cloud shakes his head, silencing away the daydreams. The summer festival is close and he still has some things to prepare. He always looks forward to these seasonal events. They are stressful, yes, but they are a challenge and a chance to grow each year again.
The summer festival is a vibrant, joyous event, transforming the streets into a lively celebration of colour and life. Buntings in cheerful hues of red, blue and yellow crisscross from roof to roof, fluttering gently in the warm breeze. The air will be filled with the scent of flowers and food. Cloud knows Sephiroth is in charge of the flower decorations. Last year, the lampposts and doorways were decorated with garlands of marigolds, daisies and roses. Every corner was a burst of colour and beauty.
Booths and stands always line the streets, each one offering a unique attraction or treat. Cloud will have a booth as well, and he knows Sephiroth will have one, too, to display his stunning bouquets and the floral crowns he makes especially for this occasion.
The stands’ variety ranges from local farmers offering fresh fruits and vegetables, artisans showcasing their handmade crafts and trinkets, and restaurants providing a selective choice of their foods.
It’s Cloud’s first time participating in the festival and he knows it will be hectic, but he still hopes he’ll get time to look around. Maybe together with Sephiroth…
Last year, he was too occupied with getting his shop set up and he’d barely had any time actually to experience the festival.
When Sephiroth visits in the late afternoon, Cloud sits at one of the tables, pencil in hand and scribbling away in his sketchbook. He only notices the man when a shadow is looming over him. He startles but his lips crack into a smile when he realises it’s Sephiroth gazing down at him.
“May I?” Sephiroth asks, gesturing to the empty chair across from Cloud.
“Of course,” Cloud says and quickly closes his book. “I’ll get your coffee-”
“No,” Sephiroth interrupts him, “you deserve a break. You always work so hard and you promised me you’d take better care of yourself.”
Cloud bites his lip and runs his hand through his feathery spikes. “Right.”
Sephiroth chuckles. He rests his elbows on the table and laces his fingers together. Cloud’s gaze automatically drifts to them and he swallows.
“What were you working on before?”
“Oh.” Cloud looks at his worn sketchbook. He traces the tip of his forefinger over the precious item. “Just some recipes. I, uh, I want to add flowers to my new pastries.”
“Flowers?” Sephiroth repeats, raising an unfairly elegant eyebrow. “Maybe I could assist you with that. You… could accompany me to the flower market this weekend and I’ll show you around.”
Cloud blinks. He knows he could easily get the flowers from Sephiroth’s shop but the man is asking him to join him at the market - to spend time with him. Is that the reason? It doesn’t matter. Sephiroth invited him and he’d be a fool to decline.
“Yes, I’d love that,” Cloud says, nodding.
“Good. I’ll pick you up at 5.30 am then.”
Sephiroth chuckles when he sees Cloud’s jaw drop.
“Mornings at the market are quite hectic. Wholesalers come to stock up and I like to be there before my preferred choices are gone. I usually go even earlier but I won’t do that to you,” Sephiroth teases.
Cloud always gets up before dawn to prepare for the bakery. He’s used to having short nights. On Saturdays, though, he mostly gets to sleep in a bit longer as Zack takes over then and opens the shop at 8 am.
“It’s alright!” Cloud quickly says. He won’t let this opportunity slip. “5.30 am. I’ll be there.”
And so Cloud sits in Sephiroth’s pick-up truck at 5.30 on a Saturday morning, burying his face into the fabric of his hoodie and sighing silently.
“Here.” Sephiroth climbs into the driver’s seat and hands him a coffee-to-go.
The older man is wearing a black button-down once again. The first few buttons are undone and Cloud glances at the exposed collarbone. He wants to lick it.
Cloud mumbles a “thanks” and takes a big sip from the coffee. He grimaces slightly and Sephiroth looks at him apologetically.
“Easily not as good as yours, sorry.”
Cloud smiles and shakes his head. “It's alright.”
Sephiroth starts the engine and off they go. It’s not too far, so they won’t be taking long, fortunately. Cloud has to fight his motion sickness, even in the front. He closes his eyes and leans back into his seat, taking deep breaths.
“Tired?”
“Yeah… and motion sick.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. Anything I can do to help?”
God, this man. He’s such a sweetheart.
“No, nothing you can do, but thank you.”
“May opening the window help a little?”
Cloud hums and Sephiroth lets the window down. It’s still a bit chilly this early in the morning, but Cloud doesn’t mind and inhales deeply. Sephiroth turns the radio on for a bit of soft background noise and soon they’re both tapping along to the song playing. It’s an old summer hit. Neither of them knows the lyrics or the name, but they hum and sing the parts they remember.
Cloud chuckles when the song ends and he feels Sephiroth’s eyes on him for a moment before the man looks back to the road. Cloud rarely experiences being this comfortable around people. It’s so different with Sephiroth. They had that immediate connection and attraction. Well, Cloud is highly attracted to the older man. And, if he reads the signs correctly, Sephiroth isn’t averse to Cloud.
The car soon comes to a stop and they get out. Cloud stretches his limbs and rolls his neck, groaning. He meets Sephiroth’s gaze, who is grinning at him with some heat in his eyes. Cloud swallows, fighting a blush and just grabs the coffee cup and takes another sip. The coffee is cold and Cloud shudders at the awful taste.
Sephiroth leads him through the market. He gets greeted by the vendors. They call out his name and chit-chat for a bit. Sephiroth asks about flowers, seeds and soil, haggles prices and easily charms the surrounding people. Cloud watches him with awe. If he was one of the vendors, Sephiroth could easily talk him into giving up all his wares for free.
“Have you found anything sparking your interest yet?” Sephiroth asks as they stroll along the market.
“Oh, I, uh, I was quite distracted by…”
Sephiroth tilts his head. “Yes?”
“I was distracted by you… It was… interesting to watch you,” Cloud admits.
He can’t look Sephiroth in the eyes and decides to simply stare at his shoes. Sephiroth rumbles his deep chuckle and Cloud wishes he could put his ear to the man’s chest. And his lips.
“I see. We can find edible flowers everywhere here. I’ll point them out for you if you like.”
Cloud nods. “That sounds good. I wrote down some ideas already and made a few sketches…” He pulls his little book from the pocket of his hoodie and waves it at Sephiroth.
“May I?” Sephiroth asks.
Cloud nervously bites his bottom lip and hands the book over to Sephiroth. The man flips through the pages and lets out a sound of awe. Light pencil strokes outline the sketches of tarts, cakes and cupcakes but also bread. They’re shaded to add textures and painted over with pastel colours.
“These are really good, Cloud,” Sephiroth says as his eyes trail the drawings.
Cloud blushes at the praise, feeling warmth spreading within him. He’s not an artist but enjoys doing sketches now and then, and the compliment means a lot to him.
“Thank you,” Cloud whispers.
Sephiroth voices his suggestions on which flowers would suit each recipe and Cloud adds notes to the sketches. The florist leads him to a stall where the vendor greets him and asks about the little saplings. Sephiroth answers politely but quickly brings attention to Cloud and his ideas.
Violas, pansies, lavender, roses, hibiscus and hyssop flowers…
Cloud loves them all. So he gets them all.
He’s beaming the whole way back to the car and Sephiroth can’t take his eyes off him. They secure their purchases in the back of the pickup truck and Cloud doesn’t even feel the motion sickness as much anymore when they drive off. He’s completely awake now and in an even better mood. Sephiroth used his time to help Cloud. He complimented him and Cloud got all the flowers he needed to try his recipes.
Cloud can’t stop talking about them and that he wants to try them all out as soon as possible. Sephiroth listens with a smile on his face and tells Cloud he’s looking forward to the finished products.
They’re almost in front of “Plume & Crumbs” when the morning takes an unforeseen turn.
“You’re so happy,” Sephiroth says, his lips turned into a lovely smile.
“Yes,” Cloud nods, “I had a good time. Thank you for bringing me along.”
“Of course. I enjoy spending time with you.”
Cloud smiles even wider. His heart is fluttering excitedly in his chest.
“You’re cute,” Sephiroth says. “I could watch you all day.”
“W-What…?” Cloud gasps.
Cloud wishes he could say things like that so easily. He wants to express his feelings for the man.
You’re beautiful. You make me feel better about myself. My heart won’t stop its somersaults when I’m with you. You’re kind and talented and warm and-
“I’m in love with you.”
The words are out before Cloud can stop them. He stares at Sephiroth with widened eyes. He can’t believe he just said that. Sephiroth’s head slowly turns and green eyes meet his, filled with surprise and shock.
“Oh god,” Cloud mutters.
His heart is beating too fast, so fast it hurts. He feels sick and his palms are starting to sweat.
“Oh fuck, fuck.”
Cloud grasps his hair with one hand and covers his face with the other.
“Let me out,” he says, his breath coming out faster and faster.
“Cloud-”
“Please, I-I need to get out, I need-”
Sephiroth nods sharply, manoeuvres the car to the side of the street and stops the engine. Cloud is out of the vehicle before Sephiroth can grasp his wrist to stop him.
Cloud is so embarrassed. He feels the sting of tears in his eyes and Cloud angrily wipes over them. He deeply breathes in the morning air.
He ruined it. They had such a good morning, and he had to be so dumb and blurt out a confession. Even if Sephiroth is attracted to him… It’s definitely too early to be talking about love. Cloud had fallen so quickly for the older man. His feelings had surprised him, too.
A hand wraps around his elbow, and Cloud flinches, knowing it’s Sephiroth. He stops in his tracks and weakly tries to free himself from the man’s hold. The bakery is so close and he just wants to lock himself up in it and hide from the world.
“Cloud…,” Sephiroth says. “Please. Let’s talk.”
Cloud doesn’t want to talk. He is too scared of getting rejected. He doesn’t know how to look the man in the eyes after all of this.
“Please…,” Sephiroth whispers and Cloud feels a pang of pain.
Cloud reluctantly turns around, still not looking at Sephiroth. He fiddles with his fingers and starts walking toward their shops. Sephiroth follows him silently. Cloud gestures at the entrance of the bakery, and Sephiroth simply nods. This is not something to talk about in the open where people might stop and watch Cloud cry his eyes out.
Cloud fumbles with his keys, dropping them once before finally unlocking the bakery. He goes to the kitchen without a word and stops in front of one of the working stations. There’s a scratch in the surface and Cloud traces it with his finger before Sephiroth crowds him and takes the hand in his own.
“Cloud,” Sephiroth starts, “I like you. A lot.”
But…
“I’ve liked you for a while now…”
Okay. This is going in a different direction than Cloud had expected. He hesitatingly turns his head to look at the older man. Sephiroth sighs softly and cups Cloud’s face, brushing away his tears.
They gaze at each other, slowly leaning in, hot breaths ghosting over their skin. Their lips come together in a soft brush, a barely there kiss before Sephiroth locks them together properly. Cloud’s head is swimming. He can’t believe this is happening. He had expected to be rejected and Sephiroth list off all the reasons why he doesn’t want Cloud like that.
They kiss several more times, only parting for brief moments before tasting each other’s lips again. They’re delicate and warm and Cloud melts into Sephiroth when the man wraps his arms around him, pressing him gently against his chest.
Sephiroth rests his forehead against Cloud’s and gazes down at him through half-lidded eyes. He breathes in deeply and releases what sounds like a deep, satisfied purr. The sound goes straight to Cloud’s cock, and he has to suppress a whine.
“Did you think I’d reject you, Cloud?”
Cloud licks his red lips and Sephiroth’s glowing eyes follow the wicked tongue.
“I mean… You’re you…. and I’m just…”
“Just?”
Cloud shrugs and looks away. He hates how self-conscious he gets all the time.
Sephiroth wraps his fingers around Cloud’s nape, brushes over the soft strands of hair and skin and says, “You’re amazing, Cloud. Don’t pull yourself down so much. You’re sweet.” He kisses Cloud’s eyelids. “And kind.” A kiss on his left cheek. “When you smile… it brightens my whole day.” A kiss on his right cheek. “And you’re absolutely gorgeous and sexy.”
Cloud squeezes his eyes shut and presses his palm over Sephiroth’s mouth. “Th-that's enough!”
Sephiroth grins, brushing away Cloud’s hand. “But I have a lot more to say…”
This time, Cloud whines when Sephiroth’s lips meet his again. His face must be some bright shade of red, but he doesn’t care.
Sephiroth takes one of Cloud’s hands and slides it over his abdomen until it rests against the spot where his heart is. Cloud gasps softly at the soft, rapid drumming beneath his palm.
“Can you feel it?” Sephiroth whispers. “My heart beats so fast when I’m around you… I… I feel deeply connected to you.”
Cloud’s eyes dart up to meet Sephiroth’s. Tears are gathering in his eyes again. Why does he cry so easily?
“Seph…”
Sephiroth does that deep chuckle Cloud loves so much and kisses him again. His tongue nudges against Cloud’s lips and the young man happily parts them. Sephiroth presses Cloud against the counter and slips a thigh between Cloud’s legs. Cloud softly moans into Sephiroth’s mouth and grasps the man’s shoulder with one hand and buries the other in silver hair.
It feels even silkier than he had imagined.
Sephiroth’s hands move from Cloud’s face down to his ass and grope it possessively. Cloud loves it. He gasps when sensual lips latch onto his slender neck and suck marks into the pale skin. The bruises will bloom nicely against it.
Someone is clearing their throat pointedly, and Sephiroth almost bites too hard into Cloud’s skin as he startles at the sound.
Cloud forces his eyes to open and Sephiroth reluctantly pulls away to turn around. Cloud blinks several times before he makes out Zack standing at the door to the kitchen, a wide grin on his face and hands on his hips.
“You know, I don’t think you’re supposed to have sex in a kitchen. Too messy.”
Cloud squeaks and runs his fingers through his hair. Sephiroth just smiles with blatant amusement. He pecks Cloud’s burning cheek and glances back at Zack.
“We have some flower pots outside. Mind giving us a hand?”
“Sure,” Zack says.
Sephiroth squeezes Cloud’s waist reassuringly and walks past Zack out of the kitchen. Cloud slowly approaches his best friend, who is looking at him with raised eyebrows and a wide smirk.
“Good for you, Cloudy. I was worried you two would just keep dancing around each other.”
Cloud chuckles, shyly scratching the back of his neck. “Thanks, Zack…”
Zack examines his friend and puts a hand on the smaller man’s shoulder. “You’ve been happier since he’s around. I’m glad for you. Love suits you.”
Cloud squirms a little and stuffs his hands in his pockets. “We haven’t… I don’t even know where we stand now.”
Zack rolls his eyes, huffing a laugh. “Cloud, my bestie, the man looks at you as if you hung up the moon. You just made out with him and probably would have fucked on the counter if I hadn’t come by. Right in front of my freshly prepared baked goods,” he adds with a dramatic sigh.
“Noo,” Cloud whines. “I mean… Yes… I don’t know.” He sighs loudly and then gazes at Zack from the corner of his eyes. “Do you really think he looks at me… like that?”
“It’s pretty obvious. I think he’s good for you. And if not, I’ll cut off his hair.”
“Nooo, not the hair!” Cloud gasps.
Zack throws his arm around Cloud’s shoulder, laughing, and guides him outside the bakery to finally help Sephiroth unload Cloud’s flowers.
The florist has already started and gives Cloud a warm smile as soon as they make eye contact. Cloud smiles back. He still can’t believe what just happened.
Sephiroth likes him. Sephiroth actually likes him. They touched. They kissed.
His heart won’t stop pounding against its cage and Cloud is almost too excited to take a pot. His hands are shaking and he just wants to jump and dance and, most of all, he wants to kiss Sephiroth again.
“Careful,” Sephiroth says when he hands over a pot with roses.
“Cloud, where do you want them? We can’t put them in the kitchen right now,” Zack muses, rubbing his chin.
“Let’s-” Cloud clears his throat. “Let’s put them in the office for now. I’ll find a place for them.”
When they’re finished, Cloud offers Sephiroth to help unload his stuff as well. He hopes to get some more alone time with him. Zack is about to suggest helping too, but Cloud gives him a stern look and the puppy quickly shuts his mouth.
“It’s not much. I have most delivered to me,” Sephiroth says.
“That’s okay. I’ll help you, anyway.”
—
Sephiroth can’t stop staring at Cloud. The man is shining. He’s so bright and beautiful and Sephiroth wants to throw him over his shoulder and take him to his apartment and–
The florist clears his throat and puts down the last sack of soil. Cloud breathes out loudly and wipes a hand over his forehead.
“Would you like some water?” Sephiroth asks and walks over to the kitchenette in the back of his shop.
The pretty sunflower follows him and Sephiroth fills a glass with water and hands it to him. Cloud drinks it all in one go. His cheeks are flushed and the florist is sure it’s not from unloading his purchases.
He brushes his knuckles over Cloud’s cheek and the little sunflower turns even redder. Sephiroth lets his finger glide over the younger man’s lips and leans in to kiss them gently. He hears Cloud’s breath hitch and he smiles. He curves his hand around the man’s neck and pulls him closer, deepening their kiss.
One of Cloud’s hands dives into Sephiroth’s hair and entangles them with his silver strands. The florist doesn’t mind one bit. Cloud is making the sweetest noises as they kiss and their hands explore. But at last, Sephiroth pulls away to catch his breath.
“I… I have to open the shop soon…,” Sephiroth whispers against Cloud’s red lips.
“Y-Yeah,” the baker mumbles, “I have to get to work as well…”
They gaze at each other for several more heartbeats before their lips lock again. Sephiroth’s hands grasp Cloud’s waist and back as he embraces him tightly.
“I… I really…,” Cloud gasps, “I really got to work…”
“I know,” Sephiroth breathes against Cloud’s lips. “Me, too…”
They don’t want to let go of one another and instead smack their lips together over and over again.
Sephiroth hums, satisfied to finally taste Cloud and hold him in his arms. He can’t get enough. And having to part is a huge challenge right now.
“Seph…,” Cloud whispers, “Fuck… I…”
“Let’s go out next week,” Sephiroth says when Cloud’s voice trails off. “Dinner. My treat.”
Cloud nods eagerly. “Friday?”
“7 pm. I’ll pick you up.”
“Yes, good.”
They kiss once more, the tips of their tongues brushing. Sephiroth releases a sigh and circles Cloud’s nape with his thumb gently.
“This is silly,” Cloud giggles as they still don’t want to part. “We see each other almost every day…”
“Well, it’s… different now. And… even before it was hard to let you go.”
Cloud gasps softly, his hands tightening around Sephiroth.
But the florist exhales a long breath and unwraps himself from Cloud reluctantly. “You should go before I decide to keep the shop closed today and ravish you instead of working.”
Cloud’s eyes widen and he gnaws his lip, blood rushing to his cheeks. “I… wouldn’t mind that.”
Sephiroth’s pupils dilate at that. His mind is already filled with all kinds of ways he wants to make Cloud writhe and moan. He can’t remember the last time someone turned him on this much. Someone who makes talking and silence so easy…
Cloud is alluring. Sephiroth tasted him and he will never be the same again.
His sunflower shakes his head with a chuckle. “I’ll… call you. Have a good day, Seph.”
Sephiroth nods. “You, too.” He brushes a kiss over Cloud’s forehead. “Take care.”
Cloud hesitates and brings their lips together once more before whirling around and rushing out of the shop without turning around. Sephiroth releases a sigh and laughs softly.
“Fuck,” he whispers, raising his fingers to his lips and closing his eyes for a moment.
The week can’t pass quickly enough. Sephiroth tries to visit the bakery every day as usual, he’s swarmed with preparations for the wedding and the summer event, though. It’s a lot to do and he calls Genesis to help him. The man is talented with flower arrangements and learns quickly. He has helped Sephiroth before and even though Sephiroth offers him payment each time, the man prefers to be showered with gifts and compliments over money.
“You look different,” Genesis comments while they’re working on the bouquets for the wedding.
“I do?”
“Yes, you do that thing.” Genesis waves his hand around. “Smiling. A lot.”
“I often smile.”
“Not like that. You look more human.”
Sephiroth huffs and rolls his eyes. “I should have asked Angeal to come.”
“His hands aren’t as skilled as mine,” Genesis says and wiggles his fingers at Sephiroth’s face. “So, now tell me. What is causing this smile?”
Sephiroth chuckles and just shakes his head. Genesis examines his friend’s face with a deep frown and then gasps.
“Could it be… it’s not a what but a who. Who put that smile on your face?”
“Gen…”
“Oh my god!” Genesis laughs. “I am right? Is there someone new in Sephiroth’s life? Who is it? You have to show them to me.”
“I don’t have to do anything,” Sephiroth sighs. “It’s… very fresh. We have our first date on Friday…”
“But you look like you’re super in love already…”
Sephiroth shrugs, his smile widening. “I’ve known him for a while now. And before I knew it, I… had fallen for him.”
Genesis gapes at him, his working hands coming to a stop. “You… you actually mean that. How long has it been since you were in love? I can’t remember.”
Sephiroth puts down the flowers and his gaze flickers to the window, to the bakery on the other side of the street. “Compared to what I’m feeling right now… I might have never actually been in love before.”
Genesis stares at Sephiroth’s expression for a while before he slams his hands on the table.
“I have to meet him. Now.”
“No. You’ll scare him away.”
“Me? I’m loveable! Why would I scare him away? Oh, the betrayal,” Genesis whines and puts his hand on his forehead, pretending to faint. “We’re family, Seph, I need to meet the man who gifted you that smile.”
Sephiroth chuckles. “Not yet. You will, eventually.” He cleans his hands with a towel. “I’ll get us some coffee. You stay put.”
“What am I, a dog?” Genesis grumbles but does as he is told and continues working on the bouquets diligently.
Sephiroth puts on his shades and steps out of the flower shop, the bells above the door jingling softly. His smile grows, knowing he will see Cloud in a few moments. His eyes immediately find the young baker and as if his sunflower had felt his presence, his head shoots up and stares at Sephiroth. Cloud blinks at him, his cheeks dusted with pink and a lovely smile spreads on his face, showing off his pearly white teeth. Sephiroth hums and steps closer, resting his elbows on the counter as his eyes trail over Cloud’s features.
“Hey, gorgeous,” Sephiroth says.
“Hey,” Cloud breathes, ducking his head shyly but his cornflower blue eyes dart back to Sephiroth right away again.
“How are you? Busy day?”
Sephiroth looks around. All the seats are occupied. Zack and Biggs are working on orders while Wedge refills baskets with bread and rolls.
“Yeah, more tourists coming in for the summer festival,” Cloud replies.
Sephiroth nods. His summer bouquets have been selling so well, he has to prepare even more. He shouldn’t have agreed to the wedding commission so shortly before the festival’s start.
“I need two coffees to go today,” Sephiroth says and Cloud questioningly raises an eyebrow at him. “Genesis is helping me with the wedding flowers,” he adds as an explanation and shrugs.
“Genesis? Oh!” Cloud exclaims cutely and his eyes widen. “Uncle Genesis. The little saplings mentioned him.”
“Saplings?” Sephiroth repeats and a breathy laughter escapes him.
“Ah.” Cloud gnaws his bottom lip and looks away. He must not have realised he used that word. “I… uh… In my head, I always called you a… a big silver tree… and well, that makes your kids… saplings…,” Cloud finishes in a mere whisper.
Sephiroth stares at him. Blinks once, twice and bursts into laughter. Cloud gapes at him and eventually starts laughing as well.
Sephiroth leans over the counter, presses a kiss to Cloud’s cheek and says, “You’re absolutely sweet, I could eat you…”
Cloud glances up at the tall man, fluttering his eyelashes at him. “Do it…”
Sephiroth suppresses a growl, but he knows his eyes are glinting with lust. “Soon, darling.”
He enjoys the sight of Cloud’s face turning redder and looking away shyly. Sephiroth watches his sunflower turning around to prepare the coffees, his eyes wandering over the slightly muscled arms, his slim waist and his perky butt. He can’t wait to get his hands on Cloud’s body. As much as he enjoys spending time with Cloud simply talking or relaxing, he craves to share a night with him.
Cloud sets down the two cups in front of Sephiroth. The florist puts down the money, winks at Cloud and takes his order.
“I should go. Can’t leave Genesis alone for too long. See you soon, Cloud,” Sephiroth says.
“Yes,” Cloud simply breathes out.
Sephiroth turns to leave and grins, knowing Cloud is still watching him. He knows his ass is looking extra good in these new black jeans. Sephiroth hopes Cloud wants him as much as he wants the baker.
Genesis is a quick worker and Sephiroth is very grateful the man is helping him. Sephiroth wasn’t even gone for long but Genesis has made good progress. He puts one of the coffee cups on the working table and Genesis hums a thanks.
“You said your date is on Friday, right?”
Sephiroth sighs loudly. “We’re still talking about that?”
“You should bring the kids to me and Angeal over the weekend and fully enjoy your new lover,” Genesis suggests.
Sephiroth stops in his movement of bringing his coffee to his lips. He hadn’t intended on sleeping with Cloud on their first date but who knows where the night may lead. Even without sex, they could have breakfast together. Sephiroth could lock up the shop earlier and spend the evening with Cloud.
“You wouldn’t mind? And Angeal?”
“Of course not,” Genesis replies. “Angeal loves the three little plagues and I do, too. We haven’t had them over in a while. It’ll be fun.”
Sephiroth shakes his head. “You’re already doing so much for me, Gen-”
“And I gladly do, my friend. You know how to repay me.”
“You don’t mean-”
“There’ll be a new adaptation of ‘Loveless’ in autumn. I expect the best category seats for you, me and Angeal. Maybe bring the kids along to show them real beauty,” Genesis adds in a sing-song.
Sephiroth groans but he doesn’t argue. Genesis is helping him a lot, after all. He owes him.
They manage to finish everything for the wedding on time and Sephiroth feels like a heavy weight has been lifted off his shoulders when the flowers get picked up. He can finally completely focus on Cloud and their date now.
He has to admit he feels a bit nervous. It’s been so long since he had a proper date and Sephiroth wants it to be wonderful for both of them. He already booked a table at a restaurant that he knows has a cosy and beautiful ambience. He knows his sunflower wouldn’t feel comfortable in a too-fancy setting.
Sephiroth messages Cloud, reminding him he’ll pick him up at 7, although he’s sure Cloud hasn’t forgotten.
—-
Cloud has changed from one shirt into the next, switched his jeans several times and curses lowly when he ends up wearing his very first outfit in the end. Sephiroth said he can dress casually but Cloud wants to look sexy for him.
He looks at himself in the mirror, fixes the collar of his white, almost-see-through blouse, buttons up his black west and tightens the belt of his black dress pants.
His heart is fluttering, from excitement and nervousness. He’s only had one boyfriend before. A few one-night stands. But this… this thing with Sephiroth, it’s important. Life-changing. Cloud needs to do well. He knows he would break if Sephiroth decided to leave him after all.
Cloud shakes his head and bans all the negative, intrusive thoughts from his mind. Thinking about what bad things might happen won’t get him anywhere.
He checks his phone and grins when he sees Zack’s message.
have a good time tonight! tell me if he does anything stupid and i’ll come and rescue u! but i have a good feeling about him, cloudy, so enjoy your time and use a condom!
Cloud bites his lip, wondering how far Sephiroth might go on a first date. Cloud would love just to jump the man and get his brains fucked out. Or make gentle, slow love…
Cloud yelps when the bell at his door rings. He quickly thanks Zack and rushes to the door to let Sephiroth in.
The man looks beautiful. His hair is tied up in a high ponytail, some strands fall over his eyes and Cloud is pretty sure Sephiroth isn’t wearing anything beneath his black blazer. His delicious collarbones and the top of his pecs are exposed. A silver chain falls loosely from Sephiroth’s long neck and his pants look painted on. His legs look even longer than usual and his waist is so slim…
Cloud swallows before he starts drooling at the sight of the man.
Sephiroth is smiling at him and he leans forward, kissing Cloud’s cheek and whispers, “You look absolutely beautiful.”
Cloud suppresses a sigh as Sephiroth’s hot breath ghosts over his ear and makes his soft hair flutter. “Thank you… You look stunning yourself.”
“Only for you,” Sephiroth says and his grin widens.
Emerald eyes trail over Cloud’s form and the baker feels as if Sephiroth is already undressing him in his mind. The florist brushes his knuckles over Cloud’s cheek and lets out a soft sigh.
“I have to admit… I want to show you off but I also want…” Sephiroth’s voice trails off and Cloud knows what he’s saying but wants to hear it from the man himself.
“You want…?”
Sephiroth’s eyes glow and narrow slightly. He licks his lips, and steps closer towards Cloud. His voice sounds even deeper when he says, “I wish we could skip dinner and jump straight to dessert… I want you so much, Cloud… I want to touch you and hear the beautiful sounds you make while getting fucked.”
Cloud gasps and a shot of arousal runs straight to his cock. He didn’t expect Sephiroth to say it so bluntly. But he likes it.
“I wish that, too,” Cloud whispers. “I’ve wanted you for so long, Seph…”
They get closer to each other with every word spoken, their chests are almost touching.
“And you can have me,” Sephiroth says, finally bringing their lips together into a deep kiss.
Cloud wraps his arm around the taller man’s neck and rests his free hand on Sephiroth’s exposed chest, brushing over the collarbones with his forefinger. Sephiroth pulls Cloud closer, his arms encircling his tiny waist easily. They only part to catch their breaths and Cloud mutters, “We should get inside…”
He takes Sephiroth’s hand and pulls him into his apartment, leading him to the bedroom. The cats immediately make themselves scarce and hurry into the living room before Sephiroth takes the lead, pushes Cloud down on the bed and crawls on top of him.
The air is heavy with desire as their lips crash together again, each kiss growing more urgent than the last. Sephiroth opens Cloud’s west and brushes his palm over the younger man’s abdomen and chest, the fabric of the white blouse rubbing deliciously over Cloud’s heated skin. Cloud moans quietly, arching into his touch, wanting more.
They kiss open-mouthed and Sephiroth’s thumbs circle Cloud’s stiff nipples before he finally undoes the buttons of the blouse with deft fingers. Cloud sighs loudly when Sephiroth’s hands touch his burning skin and the man places his lips on Cloud’s chest, leaving a trail of kisses down to the navel. He dips his tongue inside and Cloud arches his back, gasping.
“You’re so sensitive, I love it,” Sephiroth whispers and places his lips on the Cloud’s hipbone, sucking and licking the skin there.
He unbuckles Cloud’s belt and pulls his pants down, revealing more of the sexy v-line. Sephiroth’s soft lips brush over the spot, his loose hair tickling Cloud’s belly and the younger man feels his cock aching, still confined beneath his clothes.
“S-Sephiroth,” he moans and his fingers run through silver hair, holding onto the strands, not sure whether to push Sephiroth’s lips away or push them further into his skin.
Cloud is sure he will come as soon as Sephiroth decides to touch his arousal. He knows Sephiroth won’t make fun of him but Cloud wants to hold back as long as he can. He’s so horny. He wants to savour this for as long as possible but he also wishes Sephiroth would hurry up and fuck him to take the edge off. Leave the touching and mapping of their bodies for later…
Sephiroth lifts his head and gazes up at Cloud. His pupils are blown, and only a thin glowing circle of green is visible in his mesmerising eyes. He moves up to kiss Cloud again, smacking their lips together, licking his lips, sucking his tongue… Sephiroth’s mouth and teeth grace Cloud’s jaw, down to his neck and the florist bites into the delicate skin, making sure to leave a mark.
He plays with Cloud’s nipples for a while before the younger man pushes him gently away.
“Take off your clothes,” Cloud commands and Sephiroth stares at him for a heartbeat and grins down at the man, glad he is voicing his wishes.
Sephiroth sits up on his knees and opens the buttons of his blazer, letting the clothes fall carelessly down on the bed and Cloud shamelessly stares at the man’s pecs, muscular arms and toned abs.
“Fuck,” he breathes out, licking his lips.
He raises his hands and grabs Sephiroth’s chest, digging his fingers into the flesh and rubbing his palms over the man’s nipples. Sephiroth releases a soft moan and it’s the most beautiful sound Cloud has ever heard.
Sephiroth lets Cloud play with his chest and abdomen for a while longer and then leans down to capture Cloud's lips in a searing kiss, pushing him back into the pillows. Cloud's mind is a haze of desire as he runs his hands over Sephiroth's back, feeling the warmth of his skin.
They take off each other’s clothes between kisses until they’re both finally naked. Sephiroth’s hair is a mess by now and more hair has fallen free from the ponytail. Cloud can’t believe he’s so lucky to have such a beautiful man above him, touching and kissing him, making these erotic sounds for him…
“So beautiful,” Sephiroth whispers and bucks his hips against Cloud. Their bodies move together in a rhythm that heightens with each touch, each caress, each whisper of longing.
Cloud groans. It feels amazing but it’s not enough. Sephiroth’s cock is beautiful and just perfect in size and everything and he needs it inside him yesterday.
Sephiroth chuckles softly and Cloud realises he said that out loud. His mouth and brain don’t really seem to work together whenever he’s in Sephiroth’s presence. But the beautiful man kisses him gently, caresses his cheek and then asks where Cloud keeps his lube. Cloud jerks his head at the nightstand and Sephiroth lifts himself up to reach for the drawer. He quickly finds what he needs and returns to Cloud’s embrace. They kiss lazily while Sephiroth prepares Cloud until they just can’t wait any longer.
“Tell me if it hurts at any point,” Sephiroth says, rolling a condom over his cock.
Cloud smiles warmly at him and nods. It’s been a while but Sephiroth is gentle and patient. Cloud feels so full and happy when the man bottoms out. Sephiroth brushes a tear from his lover’s cheek and kisses him while shallowly thrusting in and out of him.
“More,” Cloud rasps, “More, Seph-Sephiroth, please…”
Sephiroth picks up his pace and Cloud arches his back, meeting Sephiroth's every thrust with equal fervour. Sephiroth is quite vocal and Cloud loves it. His ex-boyfriend always seemed to hold back a lot or maybe Cloud just didn’t turn him on enough to express it. But Sephiroth lets out sexy growls and moans and Cloud feels himself getting close alone from that.
“You feel so good, babe,” Sephiroth pants, moving his hips even faster.
Cloud beams up at him. At least he thinks he’s smiling between all the sounds being pushed out of his mouth. Sephiroth captures his lips and cups Cloud’s cheek, his other hand holding tightly onto his hip. Maybe it will leave fingerprints on his skin. Cloud hopes it does.
Sephiroth presses kisses along Cloud’s jaw, down his neck, and resumes his steady pace. Each thrust is driving Cloud closer to the edge, the pleasure building to an exquisite peak. Cloud wraps his legs around Sephiroth, pulling him in deeper.
“Yes, right there, so good,” Cloud whines loudly, encouraging Sephiroth to attack the sensitive spot inside him even more.
The older man pushes himself up some more to sneak a hand between their bodies. He grasps Cloud’s cock and jerks him off in rhythm of his pounding and Cloud wails, his nails dragging along Sephiroth’s arm and shoulder as he comes.
Sephiroth curses under his breath. He grips Cloud’s waist tighter, goes deeper and finally releases as well.
They’re both panting harshly for several moments before Sephiroth pulls out and gets rid of the condom before he gathers Cloud in his arms and pulls him against his sweaty chest. Cloud doesn’t mind. He’s smiling contently and closes his eyes, feeling safe and happy.
“Are you alright?” Sephiroth whispers, his hand brushing away the strands of blonde hair sticking to Cloud’s face.
“Yes,” Cloud says and glances at his lover. “Was it… was it good for you?”
Sephiroth chuckles and pecks Cloud’s lips. “Of course, did you really not notice?”
“Just making sure,” Cloud replies with a shrug.
Sephiroth gazes at him lovingly and pulls Cloud even closer. “Sharing this pleasure with you… Holding you in my arms… It’s perfect…”
Cloud couldn’t agree more. He wraps his arm around Sephiroth’s waist and snuggles his face into the man’s chest. Cloud’s eyes fall closed as Sephiroth keeps whispering compliments and running his fingers through his hair gently.
He jerks awake sometime later and realises there’s no warm body next to him anymore. Cloud sits up, looking around in panic and almost bursts into tears of relief when the bedroom door opens and Sephiroth comes inside. He’s only wearing his boxers and holding two glasses of water.
“I thought you might be thirsty, babe,” Sephiroth says and hands Cloud a glass.
The young man takes it with a smile and drinks a sip. It’s refreshing and he gulps down the rest eagerly. Sephiroth sits down next to him and trails his fingers over Cloud’s cheek, his thumb brushing the skin right below his left eye.
“Are you okay? Were you crying?”
“No,” Cloud says too quickly.
Sephiroth frowns. “Hey, what’s wrong?”
Cloud sighs and reluctantly admits, “I… I thought you might have left.”
The man stares at him, his frown deepening even more. “Why would I leave without saying goodbye?”
Cloud shrugs, looking away. But Sephiroth gently grasps his chin and turns his head around.
“Hey… I’m not like that. I like you, Cloud. I don’t want to be a one-night stand.”
“I don’t want that either…,” Cloud mutters.
“Good. We’re on the same page then. We’re dating.”
Cloud’s eyes widen and his stomach somersaults. “Dating…”
Sephiroth said it so nonchalantly but now he actually looks a bit nervous. “Except… you don’t want to give it a label or anything yet. We could just… go on a real date first and see where it leads us…”
“No!” Cloud blurts out immediately and takes Sephiroth’s hand between both of his. “I-I want to date you. I want to be your boyfriend.”
Sephiroth breathes out and his face relaxes with a gentle smile. “I’m glad. I was worried for a moment.”
Cloud tilts his head to the side. “Why would you be worried? I… I should be the one to…”
Sephiroth looks sharply at him. He laces their fingers together with one hand and wraps his other around Cloud’s nape. “Do you not trust my taste, Cloud? Do you think I don’t know what I like, what I think is good for me?”
Cloud shakes his head. “I… I know you do…”
“We’ll have to work on that self-consciousness… Trust me when I say that I like you, that I think you’re sexy and smart and great company.” Sephiroth rests his forehead against Cloud’s. “Try to love yourself more, okay?”
Cloud blushes at the man’s words but he nods. “I'll try.”
His boyfriend hums, satisfied.
Boyfriend. Sephiroth is his boyfriend.
“Fuck,” Cloud whispers, his eyes growing wider.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. I just… I just realised that you’re really my boyfriend.”
Cloud cradles Sephiroth’s face, staring at him with his big sapphire eyes and Sephiroth laughs, pulling the man into a hug.
“That’s a good thing, I hope?”
“The best.”
—
Zack has a lot of questions when Cloud comes to work after the weekend.
“Where did you two go? Did you have sex? Are you a couple now? Cloud, does that mean you’re a dad?!”
Cloud throws a roll at the idiot’s face. Zack does the same and smacks Cloud’s head. Wedge yells at them to leave his rolls alone.
Sephiroth and Cloud go on more dates. Cloud gets introduced to the saplings as their dad’s boyfriend and the teens are thrilled. He had been nervous but the fear of getting rejected had been silly. He knows the boys love him. And Sephiroth assured him several times before.
Now they’re standing in Cloud’s kitchen, baking. Well, Cloud is baking. Sephiroth is watching him, clearly amused by how nervous he’s making the younger man. Cloud is working on some summer wreath cookies with sugared rose petals and violets. He wants to sell them at the festival and Sephiroth is the first to taste the new recipe.
Cloud is adding some finishing touches when Sephiroth grabs his chin, turns his head sideways and licks a stripe over Cloud’s cheek.
“There was some glaze,” Sephiroth purrs and lets go of Cloud’s jaw again, grinning smugly.
Cloud looks a bit dazed but quickly gets a hold of himself again and scowls at his boyfriend.
He clears his throat and says, “They have to rest for two hours but… I know they already taste great. Do you want to try it?”
He takes one of the wreath cookies and holds it out to Sephiroth. The florist eyes it curiously and eventually takes a big bite. He chews and lets out a hum of approval.
“Delicious,” Sephiroth says, and opens his mouth again, waiting for Cloud to feed him.
Cloud giggles and lets Sephiroth eat from his hand until the cookie is gone and the florist wraps his tongue around Cloud’s lithe fingers, cleaning any rest of the sugar from them. Cloud watches with a slack jaw, swallowing hard when Sephiroth sucks on his finger and gazes at him with firey eyes.
They end up fucking on the kitchen table.
“I hope none of your fluids hit any of these sweets,” Zack says when he shoves a cookie into his mouth.
Cloud’s cheeks redden. “You say that after you already ate three of them…”
“I don’t wanna know, so shut up! They’re too good!”
Zack is happy for his friend and keeps telling Cloud so. Aerith is excited as well. She’s always liked Sephiroth and thinks they’re a great match. She also helps the saplings and Sephiroth prepare summer flower crowns for the festival. If Cloud wasn’t so busy himself he would have loved to help out, too. He even sulks a bit because Aerith gets to spend a lot more time with his boyfriend than he does.
“Hello, sweety.”
Cloud turns with a frown, knowing it’s not Sephiroth calling him that and finds Roche leaning over the counter with a wide smile. He sighs and walks over to him.
“Hey, Roche. The usual?”
“And your number,” Roche says. “Let’s go out Friday night. I’ll treat you to a ride on my motorbike and then afterwards… you can ride something else,” he adds with a wiggle of his eyebrows.
Cloud rolls his eyes and then stops frozen in his tracks as he finds Sephiroth looming behind Roche. He’s smiling, but it’s kind of eerie and his eyes are colder than he has ever seen them.
“Excuse me,” Sephiroth says and puts a hand on Roche’s shoulder, clenching until the man yelps and turns around.
“What do you want?” Roche asks and Cloud has to compliment the man’s guts because if looks could kill, Roche would be deader than dead by now.
“You shouldn’t talk to him like that,” Sephiroth says, his voice even but icy.
“None of your business,” Roche laughs and turns to face Cloud again.
“Sephiroth,” Cloud mutters. He doesn’t want things to escalate, even though he’s sure Sephiroth isn’t one to start a physical fight. At least not here in the bakery café, where dozens of people can witness the spectacle.
Sephiroth’s emerald eyes flicker to Cloud. His entire face softens, and he lets go of Roche again.
“Hey, baby,” Sephiroth purrs and steps beside Roche to pull Cloud into a kiss.
Cloud didn’t expect Sephiroth to be the jealous type and claim his territory. He doesn’t mind a single bit, though. Roche is staring at them with a dropped jaw. He’s stammering something, but Cloud is too focused on the tongue in his mouth and the soft lips pressing against his before Sephiroth pulls away with a smug smile.
“H-Hey,” Cloud finally gets to greet his boyfriend.
“You and him?” Roche says, pointing back and forth between Cloud and Sephiroth. “Damn, you’re some lucky man!” He laughs loudly and slaps Sephiroth’s arm playfully.
Sephiroth looks at Roche as if he was an ant but at least that murderous gleam has vanished from his eyes.
“If he ever leaves you or you need a change of scenery, you can always hit me up,” Roche says, winking at Cloud.
Sephiroth narrows his eyes at the man. “That won’t happen. Now excuse me, I need to discuss something with my boyfriend.”
“But my coffee–”
“Zack,” Sephiroth interrupts Roche and turns his sweet smile to Zack who just appeared next to Cloud, probably making sure the situation is under control. “Would you be so kind as to prepare this guy’s coffee? Thank you.”
Zack exchanges a glance with Cloud who nods at him and says, “Sure thing, Seph.”
Cloud follows Sephiroth to one of the free tables in the corner and the tall man leans down to give his boyfriend a gentle kiss.
“How are you?” Sephiroth asks in a murmur and brushes a loose strand of hair from Cloud’s cheek.
“Good. Are you okay, though?” Cloud wonders and glimpses shortly in the direction of Roche. “You have nothing to worry about. That’s just Roche being Roche.”
Sephiroth chuckles. “I’m sorry if I came over too possessive… I know I have nothing to worry about. I trust you, Cloud. But… he just rubbed me off the wrong way.”
“I get it. I don’t think I’d like it much either if someone flirted with you…,” Cloud admits with a small pout.
Sephiroth just smiles and kisses him once again. “I wanted to talk with you about the summer festival. It’s, uhm, well, Genesis is coming and to my big surprise, Angeal as well. They want to help me out with the flowers and… Genesis is dying to see you.”
“Oh,” Cloud breathes out. “I… Sure, yes, okay.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t leave you alone with him. The good thing is it will allow me to take time off and enjoy the festival with you.”
“I would love that,” Cloud says, beaming at the older man.
“Good, I’m glad.”
They chat some more until Sephiroth has to return to the shop. His eyes meet Roche’s who is still sitting at the counter, slurping his coffee and Sephiroth jerks his head at him, smiling with amusement when Roche chokes on a sip and starts coughing furiously. Cloud shakes his head at Sephiroth but can’t suppress the small grin appearing on his face.
And then it’s here - the summer festival. It brings a buzz of excitement to the town and Cloud can’t wait to stroll the streets with Sephiroth, checking out all the booths and enjoying the summer weather.
Zack stays at the bakery while Cloud and Biggs man the booth further down the street. He knows Sephiroth’s stand is close by but the street is filled with people and Cloud can’t catch a glimpse at the man. He also knows the saplings’ uncles are there and gets a bit nervous thinking about it. He’s not sure how much influence they have over Sephiroth’s decision to be with Cloud. Would the man end their relationship if they didn’t approve of him?
Cloud scolds himself for thinking like that.
“Cloud, you okay?” Biggs asks, nudging his friend’s shoulder gently.
“Oh, yes. Just…”
“You want to see Sephiroth, huh?” Biggs smirks at him. “Wedge is coming soon, you can take a break then.”
Cloud glances at the clock on his phone. He hadn’t even noticed how fast time had passed. They had a lot of customers, buying pastries and iced teas and coffee. His cheeks already hurt from smiling politely all day long.
Cloud lets out a breath of relief when Wedge arrives, waving excitedly at his friends and immediately drags Cloud out of the booth, telling him to see his lover. The young baker pulls out his phone, checks his hair and face in the screen’s reflection and makes his way through the crowd to the flower stand.
Several children and teenage girls are gathered in front of it, eagerly waiting for their flower crowns. Cloud chuckles. He has already seen quite some people wearing them and has to say the crowns look beautiful.
His eyes flicker over the customers and find Sephiroth and two men he hasn’t seen before. Genesis and Angeal. One of them is citing some poetry or something to a young girl and hands over a flower crown with a dramatic bow and Cloud immediately realises this one is Genesis.
Sephiroth finally notices his boyfriend and smiles lovingly. He excuses himself and comes to the front to pull Cloud into a hug with a sigh.
“I missed you,” Sephiroth whispers.
Cloud’s heart flutters. “I missed you, too.”
“Crowds exhaust me…” Sephiroth’s arms around Cloud tighten. “I feel better with you here now, though.”
Cloud laughs softly. “Same…”
Sephiroth releases the smaller man, brushes with his hand through Cloud’s hair and kisses his lips. “I’ll introduce you to Genesis and Angeal, alright? And then we can enjoy the festival together.”
Cloud nods, swallowing hard. His hands feel clammy all of a sudden. Sephiroth loops his arm around his waist and pulls him closer.
“Don’t worry. They’ll love you.”
“Enjoy the festival, little princess!” Genesis says, smiling brightly as he waves goodbye to a girl skipping away.
His eyes dart to Cloud and his smile turns into a smug grin.
“Oh, who do we have here?”
“Be nice,” Sephiroth growls. “Angeal, Genesis. This is Cloud. My boyfriend.”
The buff guy with hair similar to Zack's steps closer and holds out his hand with a smile. “Nice to meet you, Cloud. I’m Angeal. This is my husband, Genesis.”
“I can introduce myself very well, darling, thanks.” Genesis gently nudges Angeal’s still outstretched hand away and stands in front of Cloud, eyes wandering up and down the man’s body until it lingers on his face. “You’re cute.”
Cloud forces back a blush and just says, “Uhm, thanks. Nice to meet you.”
Before Genesis can say some more, Sephiroth is already pulling Cloud away. “I’m going to spend some time with my boyfriend now. Thank you both for your help.”
“Hey, don’t whisk him away just yet!” Genesis complains. “I want to get to know him.”
“Another time, Gen.”
Angeal chuckles and rests a hand on Genesis's shoulder. “Let them be.”
His husband sighs loudly. “Alright, alright. See you soon, Cloud!”
Cloud hesitatingly waves goodbye at them and lets Sephiroth drag him away. They link hands after a while, walking closely side by side. They look at the various booths and try out several snacks. As they wander through the festival, Cloud feels a sense of peace wash over him being by Sephiroth's side. The excitement of the crowd fades into the background as they share private conversations and stolen glances. Every touch from Sephiroth feels grounding, reassuring. The world outside their bubble seems to blur, focusing only on each other.
“I have a flower crown waiting for you,” Sephiroth murmurs into Cloud’s ear.
Cloud’s head whips around, looking up at his boyfriend with wide eyes. “You do?”
“Of course. I made it especially for you. I hope you’ll like it.”
“I’ll love it,” Cloud whispers, smiling shyly.
They buy smoothies and share some fruit before they head back to the flower stand.
“Dad! You’re back!”
Three silver-haired teens turn to the couple, waving at them. Kadaj immediately rushes to his father and takes his hand, pulling him closer to the stand. Cloud always enjoys the sight of the boys adoring their father. Every time again, it fills him with warmth and affection. Genesis is putting a flower crown on Yazoo’s head and coos at him how pretty he looks. Angeal is wrapping up bouquets for some customers and Sephiroth watches his little family with a smile that pulls at Cloud’s heartstrings.
He releases a content sigh that draws Kadaj’s attention and the boy smiles widely at him.
“Cloud, I’m glad you’re here.”
The teen is almost as tall as Cloud by now. He wonders if Kadaj will grow even taller and the thought makes him almost pout a bit.
“Are you guys having fun?” Cloud asks.
Kadaj nods eagerly. “There is so much to see! Dad gave each of us an extra allowance for the festival.”
Cloud chuckles. “Don’t spend it all in one go.”
His eyes wander over to the other two saplings. Loz is fussing over Yazoo’s flower crown and another boy Cloud doesn’t know is standing next to them, staring at Yazoo with wide sparkling eyes. Cloud steps closer to Sephiroth and nudges his elbow.
“Who’s the guy with Yazoo and Loz?”
Sephiroth rolls his eyes and clearly suppresses a growl. “That’s, uh, Yazoo’s boyfriend. Kunsel.”
Cloud splutters at that. “Boyfriend?!” He immediately clasps a hand over his loud mouth but the others are too distracted to have heard him.
“He seems like a good guy and I shouldn’t be surprised. Yazoo has always drawn attention at his school. But… he’s still my son and…”
Cloud puts a hand on Sephiroth’s elbow. “I understand. Well, as far as I can without having a kid of my own but… You don’t want them to get hurt. Or grow up too fast,” he adds with a grin. “But you have good kids, Seph. You don’t have to worry about them. I’m sure they’ll break quite some hearts, though…”
Sephiroth whines and Cloud can’t believe how cute he sounds. The tall man buries his face in Cloud’s neck and inhales deeply. Cloud wraps his arms around him with a soft laugh.
Sephiroth sighs. “Let me get your flower crown.”
Cloud nods and Sephiroth kisses his cheek. Maybe he can braid Sephiroth’s gorgeous hair one day and put flowers in it… The image popping up in his mind alone makes Cloud blush. His boyfriend would be even more ethereal than he already is.
The florist walks to the crates behind the stand and returns after a short while, gently carrying the crown in his large hands. Cloud smiles brightly when Sephiroth hands it to him so he can take a closer look at it.
It’s a mix of mini sunflowers, dainty white and blue flowers and sprigs of eucalyptus. He will have to ask about the names later.
“It’s beautiful…” Cloud says and Sephiroth places it delicately on his head. “How do I look?”
Sephiroth is staring at him with so much adoration that Cloud’s heart throbs wildly and he feels shy all of a sudden.
“ You’re beautiful,” Sephiroth whispers and kisses his boyfriend gently. “You look like a wonderful sacrifice for a god…”
“Seph,” Cloud whines and the older man chuckles.
He caresses Cloud’s face with his fingers, traces his eyebrows and lips, and eventually kisses him again. “I love you…”
Cloud had been afraid of falling in love in the past. Falling and shattering on the ground into tiny little pieces. But he didn’t shatter. Sephiroth caught him and Cloud can’t imagine being any happier.
“I love you, too.”
They lock their lips again until Genesis whistles loudly and the teens laugh. Cloud wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
Notes:
This is it! Thank you all so much for reading this little story and leaving comments and kudos ^-^
I needed a fluffy story for myself so there's no angst at all here and Cloud needs a break from being tormented all the time haha
Not really sure why I chose Kunsel as Yazoo's boyfriend but he kinda popped into my mind when thinking about the pretty boy. He's a teen himself here, of course.
I hope you had fun reading the fanfic and hopefully, I was able to put a smile or two on your face ^-^
