It was a quiet night at Restoration HQ. The clock had long struck midnight, and most of the team was fast asleep. Tangle was on a different wavelength entirely.
Sonic stretched out on the couch, his eyes already half-closed, when Tangle plopped down next to him, her tail flicking with restless energy.
"Hey, Sonic?" Tangle said.
"Mmm?" Sonic murmured, barely able to keep his eyes open.
"Sonic, what if our lives are just one of many versions of reality? What if in another universe, we're best friends with Eggman?" she said, her voice filled with wonder and horror.
"Honey, that is nice to think about, but I think I need to go to bed," Sonic yawned as he started to close his eyes.
"Sonic, what if in another universe we are video game characters?"
"Tangle, what did I tell you about breaking the fourth wall?" Sonic said.
"Imagine the fan art," Tangle said positively.
"Ew, imagine the fan art," she added negatively.
"So, Tangle," Sonic said, "did you get your thoughts out?"
"Sonic, would you rather have unlimited chili dogs but no games or unlimited games but no chili dogs?" Tangle asked.
"Uhhh, hmm," Sonic said, not shocked that Tangle would ask such a deep question.
"I think I would take, hmmm," Sonic pondered.
"But I thought these were silly little questions," Tangle said, getting in Sonic's face with a smile.
"I guess you win this round, Tangle," Sonic said. "I guess I would take the unlimited chili dogs."
"Okay," Tangle said.
"Tangle, now I can't sleep," Sonic said.
"Do you want to build a pillow fort?" Tangle asked.
"Yes, please," Sonic said.
Sonic and Tangle began building a pillow fort, giggling as they did. Tangle then got the bright idea to slap Sonic with a pillow.
"Oh, now you're on," Sonic said.
They began hitting each other and making noises with pillows, not realizing they were waking up a certain wolf and sheep.
They soon heard banging on the door.
"Oh no," Tangle whispered. "Let's just lay down and pretend to be asleep."
They started to hear the door shake as it became unlocked. Sonic and Tangle laid down on top of each other, pretending to look like they were sleeping.
"I know I wasn't hearing things," Lanolin said.
Whisper gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Let's just go to bed," Whisper said.
"But Whisper, I know they're causing a ruckus," Lanolin said.
"I’ll brew you your nighttime coffee," Whisper said positively.
"Fine," Lanolin said.
"Good," Whisper said before closing their door.
After a good 15 minutes, Sonic and Tangle got up and started talking again.
"Do you consider eyebrows facial hair?" Tangle asked.
"How do you know you’re not crazy and just hallucinating your whole life?" Tangle added.
"Because you're one of a kind," Sonic said before kissing her on the cheek.
"Oh, Sonic," Tangle said before kissing him back.
They looked at each other, blushing. Then Sonic continued, "Why do we cook bacon and bake cookies?"
"Ask Amy," Tangle said. "I'm pretty sure she or Silver can explain."
"I love their cookies," Sonic said.
"Yeah," Tangle agreed.
"Agreed," Lanolin said.
"Yeah, see, Lanolin gets it," Tangle said.
"Wait a minute… LANOLIN!" Tangle said in a loud whisper.
"See, I knew I wasn't crazy," Lanolin said as she looked over to Whisper.
"This is kind of fun, though," Whisper said.
"But are we supposed to be mad at them?" Lanolin asked.
"I know, but you can't stay mad at them. Look at their faces," Whisper said.
Sonic and Tangle had the goofiest grins on their faces.
"You're right. Fine," Lanolin said.
"Any other questions?" Whisper said, sitting down.
"We were talking about Silver and Amy's yummy foods," Tangle said with stars in her eyes.
"I wish I could bake like them," Tangle added.
"They're so good at what they do," Tangle kept rambling.
"I want to go get some cookies now," Sonic said.
"Well, how about this," Whisper said.
Sonic and Tangle looked at Whisper.
"You two get some sleep, and we will go visit Silver and Amy tomorrow," Whisper said.
"You mean it?" Sonic and Tangle said excitedly.
"Yes," Whisper said. "But only if you two get some sleep."
"Okay," Sonic and Tangle both said as they lay down, with Tangle using her tail as a pillow for them both.
Whisper and Lanolin stepped out of the room and closed the door softly.
Lanolin gave Whisper a small kiss on her cheek. "Wow, you’re good," Lanolin said.
"I know," Whisper said, smiling.
