Magic and Technology Don't Mix

Summary:

Natasha and Traci hold a competition to determine once for all which powerset is better: being powered by science or being powered by magic.

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

Science vs Magic. Girlfriend vs Girlfriend. One winner leaves alive.

(The other winner also leaves alive, but probably slightly embarrassed.)

What would prevail? The wonders of scientific technology? Or the mystical arts?

There was only one way to find out…

The battle was long and hard, playing out for several rounds on the lunch table inside Natasha’s lab. The combatants grew weary with every move but knew they had to stay in the fight and secure victory for their side.

“It was Professor Plum in the Ballroom with the Candlestick!”

“Nope,” Natasha replied, spinning around one of her cards and shooting her girlfriend a cocky glare.  “I have the candlestick.”

Traci 13 pouted, handing Natasha back the dice and checking another weapon off her list.

“You know that I would have had this in the bag if we just played using tarot cards like I suggested, right?” Traci muttered.

“That would be cheating,” Nat countered, rolling the dice and moving her character across the board. “We're playing with standard rules.”

“And your supercomputer isn’t cheating?” Traci challenged, gesturing to the sleek laptop which housed the module Natasha had built to help her conduct the game of Clue more efficiently.

“Not any more than your foresight is!” Nat argued, before looking at her cards and her data. “I accuse Professor Plum in the Dining Room with the rope.”

I have Professor Plum,” Traci replied, flipping a card around and sticking out her tongue teasingly. “I guessed one of my own cards to throw you off.”

Natasha smiled at her girlfriend's move, inputting that new information into her computer… which let out a loud BEEP, confirming it had solved the game.

“Got it!” Nat declared. “I accuse -”

As Nat began to speak, the room started to spin slightly. The light from her computer felt a little too bright. She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out.

“I accuse Colonel Mustard in the Dining Room with the lead pipe,” Traci interjected. “Clever distraction with the rope guess. I honestly didn't know it was in your hand....”

“What?” Nat replied, shaking her head and trying to regain her senses. “Did… Did you just possess me to read the answer?”

Traci shrugged. “You said I can use any magic I wanted,” she argued. “Possessing you is within those bounds.”

Nat pursed her lips. “I… suppose those are the rules I agreed to,” she muttered, opening up the results envelope and confirming that Traci's guess was accurate. “So you win… even if my machine gave you the answer.”

Traci did a celebratory fist-bump, laughing. “Do you know what this means?”

“That magic is superior,” Nat replied. “You don’t need to rub it in..”

Traci shook her head, leaning across the table until she was close enough that Nat could feel her breath on her nose. “Nope. It means that science and magic are best when used together,” she concluded, planting a kiss on her girlfriend’s lips.

Notes:

Thanks for reading!

I had hoped to get this out during Pride Month proper... Nat and Traci need more love and, while I am not the MOST well-read on them overall (I am sorry; I still need to read Steelworks), I hope this fic did them justice in a small way at least.

This is partially inspired by the pithy way the DC Book of Pride talks about their break-up, suggesting their powers reflected larger incompatibility. Consider this a counter-argument, I suppose...
