Chapter Text

Alex Levy was known by many as one of the country's most renowned and respected journalists. With over 20 years at UBA, she'd built an impressive career, and her professionalism and fairness made her a trusted figure for millions. Her commitment to the truth and quality journalism was unquestionable.

Her breakup with Paul Marks two years ago left deep scars. Their brief but intense relationship was full of challenges and conflicts. Paul's billionaire lifestyle often clashed with Alex's principles. The split was painful, leaving Alex with a mix of resentment and longing.

To cope, Alex threw herself even more into her work. She initially worked hard to facilitate the merger between UBA and NBN. Now, she worked overtime in The Morning Show newsroom, constantly seeking new and inspiring stories. Despite her efforts, Paul still occupied her thoughts. She often found herself reliving past moments, wondering what could have been different.

On a typical work morning, Alex was reviewing her notes and preparing for the broadcast. The newsroom was as busy as always, with phones ringing and editors making last-minute changes. She was in the middle of a conversation with Chip, her producer, when her boss, Cory, approached with a worried look.

"Alex, we need you in the studio now. There's been a serious accident involving a public figure. We need to cover this live."

Alex nodded and quickly headed to the studio. As she walked, Chip handed her a sheet with preliminary details of the accident. She began to read quickly but stopped abruptly when she saw the name: Paul Marks. Her heart stopped for a moment, and she felt a wave of panic.

Alex sat at the desk, trying to keep her composure as she adjusted her microphone. Her hands trembled slightly. The director counted down the seconds to go live, and Alex took a deep breath, forcing herself to focus.

"Good morning. We interrupt our regular programming to bring you breaking news. A serious car accident occurred about an hour ago, involving businessman Paul Marks."

She paused, feeling a lump in her throat. The image of the wrecked car appeared on the screen, and Alex had to look away for a moment. She continued reading the information from the teleprompter, trying to keep her voice steady.

"According to authorities, Paul's vehicle lost control and collided with a guardrail. The causes of the accident are still under investigation, and he was taken in critical condition to an undisclosed hospital."

As Alex read the news, a whirlwind of emotions overwhelmed her. Fear for Paul's life, the pain of shared memories, and the pressure to stay professional in the face of personal tragedy brought her to the brink of tears. She felt a mix of despair and helplessness, wishing she could do something but knowing her duty was to inform the public.

Alex finished the broadcast with a serious expression, thanking viewers for their attention and promising more information as it became available. When the cameras finally turned off, she felt momentary relief, but the pain and worry didn't disappear. Chip immediately approached, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"Alex, you were incredible. I can imagine how difficult this is for you."

She just nodded, tears threatening to fall. She needed a moment to process everything. With one last look at the screen showing the accident scene, Alex stood up, determined to find out everything she could about Paul's condition.

She left the studio with her head spinning, each step heavy as if the ground was pulling her down. As she passed through the studio, everything around her seemed a blur. Chip followed closely, offering silent support. When they reached the elevator, Alex finally spoke.

"I need to go to the hospital, Chip. I need to know how he is. Cory must know which hospital he was taken to, I'll call him in the car."

Chip nodded, understanding Alex's need. "I'll go with you. You can't drive in this state."

Alex was flooded with flashbacks, transporting her to significant moments of her relationship with Paul.

"Alex."

"Yes?"

“Paul Marks.”

“Hi.”

“How you doing? Pleasure to meet you.”

“Pleasure to meet you.”

.

They hurried out of the studio, Alex feeling like every second was dragging. Chip guided her to his car, helping her in and fastening her seatbelt. The city Alex knew so well suddenly turned into a maze of streets and traffic lights that seemed to conspire to delay her arrival.

In the car, the silence was interrupted only by the sound of the engine and Alex's irregular breathing. Chip drove carefully but quickly, balancing the urgency of the situation with the need for safety.

"Everything will be okay, Alex. Paul is strong," Chip said, trying to comfort her. But Alex could barely hear his words. Her mind was stuck on the image of Paul, wondering what state he was in, if he was still fighting for his life.

When they finally arrived at the hospital, Alex almost jumped out of the car before it fully stopped. Chip followed closely, holding her arm to ensure she didn't stumble.

.

At the hospital, Alex and Chip were met by the typical chaos of an emergency room. She approached the reception desk, showing her press badge and asking about Paul.

With a trembling voice, Alex explained the situation. "I'm here to see Paul Marks. He was in a car accident. Where is he?"

"He's in the ICU," the receptionist informed.

Alex remembered their first days together, how Paul practically moved into her apartment, and the way Benny quickly got attached to him. Those early days were one of the few times Alex saw a vulnerable and affectionate side of Paul.

Alex spotted Paul's assistant, Amanda, in the ICU hallway. She approached, feeling a mix of anxiety and sadness.

"Amanda, how is he?" Her voice trembled slightly.

Amanda looked at her with tear-filled eyes, showing emotion in front of Alex for the first time. "They haven't informed me much. He's stable, but his condition is critical... Sorry to ask, but what are you doing here, Alex?"

Alex took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her emotions. "I needed to be here. I need to know how he is."

As soon as she admitted it out loud, the most painful memory of all surfaced in her mind: the night they broke up. Since that morning at UBA, Paul treated Alex with silence. Exhausted, Alex had the hard duty of packing all the things Paul had left in her house over the days they spent together.

"Oh, God, I so– I wanted a partner."

"You had one."

"One I could trust."

The silence that followed was deafening. They knew there was no turning back.

.

Alex stopped in front of the ICU door, hesitating for a moment. She took a deep breath, trying to prepare herself for what she was about to see. Leaning against the wall, she felt a lump form in her throat. "You can do this, Alex," she murmured to herself before pushing the door open.

Entering the ICU, Alex was immediately hit by the rhythmic sound of life support machines. The air was filled with the sterile smell of disinfectant. She looked around, searching for Paul among the beds. Finally, she found him at the back of the room.

He was lying there, pale and motionless, with various tubes and wires connected to his body. The monitor beside him displayed his vital signs in a series of graphs and numbers that Alex barely understood. He looked so different from the vibrant man she knew. It was almost impossible to believe that the vulnerable figure was the same Paul who always emanated confidence and strength.

Alex slowly approached the bed, each step more difficult than the last. When she finally reached Paul's side, silent tears began to fall down her face. She bent down, holding his cold hand with her visibly trembling ones.

"Paul..." she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "I'm here."

She felt a tightness in her chest seeing Paul's condition. The reality of the situation hit her with full force. He was in a coma, vulnerable and defenseless, and there was nothing she could do to change that. The pain and helplessness were overwhelming.

As she held Paul's hand, a flood of memories washed over Alex's mind. She remembered how they met, the happy moments they shared, and the reasons that led to their breakup. Memories of laughter, arguments, passionate kisses, and harsh words swirled in her mind, each one adding to the pain she felt seeing him in that state.

She recalled a time when Paul held her after a particularly tough day at work. "I'll always be here for you," he had said. And now, Alex felt it was her turn to be there for him, even if he couldn't perceive it.

Alex stayed there for a long time, just holding Paul's hand and watching his chest rise and fall rhythmically with the help of the machines. Finally, she leaned closer, whispering in his ear:

"I know you can hear me, Paul. I know you're strong enough to overcome this. Please, come back to me. There are so many things we need to resolve, so many things we need to say to each other. I promise I'll be here, waiting for you, every day. Please."

She kissed his forehead softly, letting a few tears fall onto his face. After a few minutes, she felt a bit calmer. The visit had been devastating but also gave Alex a new determination. She knew she had to be strong for him, that she couldn't fall apart now.

.

Leaving the ICU, Alex felt an enormous weight on her shoulders, but also a new sense of purpose.

"I'll be here," she repeated to herself. "I'll be here, Paul. Always."

Amanda approached Alex. "Thank you for being here, Alex. You know he practically has no one. Paul will be very happy to know you were the first person to show up here."

Alex nodded. She would wait by his side, hoping Paul would have a second chance, not just at life, but maybe, if he wanted, at love.

Chapter Text

Alex sat in the hospital café, holding a cup of tea that was quickly getting cold. Her mind was miles away, caught up in the emotions stirred by seeing Paul again. The image of him in the hospital bed, so fragile and vulnerable, wouldn't leave her. She needed advice, some way to figure out what this all meant for her.

Chip showed up with two cups of coffee and sat down next to her. "Are you okay?"

"I don't know, Chip. Seeing Paul like that... I can't even figure out what I'm feeling. It's like all those feelings I thought I'd moved past are coming back."

Chip looked at her with understanding. For the first time, she felt she could rely on her friend for something related to Paul. "What do you want to do?"

"I don't know. Part of me wants to be there for him, but another part is scared of getting hurt again."

"Maybe you should talk to someone about it. Someone who can help you see things from a different perspective."

.

Later, Alex arranged to meet Bradley at her apartment, where Brad was under house arrest. Bradley might have her flaws, but she was always great at listening to Alex without judging.

"So, how are you feeling after seeing Paul?" Bradley asked after taking a long sip of her wine.

"Confused. I'm worried about him, but I'm also scared. Our relationship was so complicated, and I don't know if I can go through that again."

Bradley nodded. "That's understandable. But sometimes, these moments of crisis show us what really matters. Maybe this is an opportunity for you two to resolve things, one way or another."

.

A few days later, Paul was struggling to recover. The first days were the hardest, with constant pain and uncertainty about the extent of his injuries. But he was determined. During his lonely hours in the hospital, he reflected on his life. The accident was a brutal wake-up call. He realized how much he had neglected important things in his relentless pursuit of success.

He thought about Alex, how he had lost her because of his misplaced priorities. Amanda had told him about her visit and showed him the video of her reporting his accident on The Morning Show, trying to hide her pain and worry. The clip burned in his mind.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the city, Alex threw herself into her daily tasks, but her mind continued to wander. In the days since Paul's accident, she kept pestering Bradley with questions about his condition, but the answer was always the same: only she could decide what to do.

That night, after being informed by Amanda about Paul's improvement, alone in her apartment, Alex finally decided to confront her feelings. She knew she still loved Paul, but she also knew she needed to protect her heart. She decided the only way forward was to talk to him and find out together if there was still a future for them as a couple.

.

The next day, on her way to the hospital, Alex felt a whirlwind of emotions. She was nervous, anxious, and even a little scared. She didn't know how Paul would react to seeing her, but she knew she needed to be there. When she arrived, she was greeted by the sound of machines and the typical smell of disinfectant. She paused before entering Paul's room.

When Alex entered the room, she saw Paul lying in bed, still pale and fragile, thinner, but with his eyes open and visibly conscious. He looked at her, a mixture of surprise and relief in his gaze.

"Alex," he began, his voice weak but firm.

She walked to the bed, feeling tears forming in her eyes. "Hi, Paul. How are you feeling?"

"I know I hurt you, and I'm sorry for that. This accident made me realize a lot of things. I want to change. I want to be someone you can trust and love again," he continued, ignoring her question.

Alex felt a wave of emotions. "Paul..." She hadn't expected to be received so directly. All she could do was throw herself into the arms of the man in front of her. After two years, she finally felt safe and at home.

"Paul, don't worry about that now. Let's take it one step at a time, together."

Alex sat down next to Paul's bed, gently holding his hand. "I was so worried. When I heard about the accident, my world collapsed."

"I know," he said, squeezing her hand with the little strength he had. "I'm sorry for everything I put you through. Amanda showed me your video on TMS. You were amazing, as always."

Silence filled the room for a few moments. Paul felt it was time to address what they had both been avoiding for so long.

"Alex, I was an idiot," he admitted. "I was so consumed by work, by the fear of losing Hyperion, and by the expectations I placed on myself regarding the UBA acquisition, that I ended up neglecting what mattered most – you. And when I realized it, it was too late."

Paul's words brought back the pain and anger Alex still felt. "You have no idea how much you hurt me, Paul. I felt abandoned, betrayed."

"I know," he said, tears in his eyes. "And I'm deeply sorry for that. I want a chance to make things right, to be the person you deserve."

Alex took a deep breath, feeling a mix of pain and hope. "Paul, I don't know if we can just go back to what we were. But I'm willing to try to understand, to see if we can still be something together."

"That's all I ask, Alex. A chance to prove that I can change," he replied, the sincerity evident in his voice.

After that, Alex spent a few more hours with Paul, talking about some of the new things that had happened in the last two years they had been apart. When it was time to leave, she got up, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders.

"I'll come back tomorrow," she said before leaving.

"I'll be here, waiting," Paul replied with a weak smile.

And with doubts and hopes, Alex and Paul began to believe in the possibility of a second chance. They were ready to face the challenges, with the certainty that together, they could find a new beginning.

Chapter Text

The days at the hospital became part of Alex's routine. At first, she visited Paul out of concern, making sure he was getting the best care and monitoring his recovery. But as time went on, these visits started to mean more to her.

Initially, Alex felt a mix of anxiety and hope walking into the hospital. She spent hours by Paul's side, watching the monitors and talking to the doctors about his progress. She brought a different book each time, trying to bring some normalcy and distraction to Paul, who was still weak and bedridden.

Their conversations began cautiously, covering light topics and avoiding painful past issues. They talked about books, movies, and the latest news, rediscovering common ground. Even in his weakened state, Paul kept his sense of humor, joking about the hospital food and the nurses.

Over time, their talks got deeper. One day, while Alex was reading an article to Paul, he held her hand, bringing a wave of emotions.

"Alex, I never stopped thinking about you," he said softly. "Even when it seemed like my work was all that mattered, you were always in my heart."

Tears filled Alex's eyes. "I thought about you a lot too... more than I’d like to admit," she smiled.

.

Alex's visits became more frequent, and she started going to the hospital every day after leaving UBA. She spent hours talking with Paul and sometimes even brought in food that wasn’t from the hospital to cheer him up. The connection they had at the beginning of their relationship began to resurface, stronger and deeper.

Paul was making good progress in his recovery. He could sit up and even take a few steps with help from the physical therapists. Alex's presence seemed to motivate him even more.

"You are my strength, Alex," he said one day when she was helping him walk down the hospital corridor.

"And you are my inspiration. Seeing your determination gives me the strength to believe we can overcome anything," she replied with a smile.

.

During the long afternoons at the hospital, Alex and Paul had deep conversations about what had separated them and what was bringing them together now. Talking about their fears, mistakes, and regrets helped heal old wounds.

"I never wanted to hurt you," Paul said one day. "I thought I was doing the right thing, but I was just thinking about myself."

With each conversation, their connection grew stronger. They rediscovered the reasons that brought them together in the past and found new reasons to admire each other. One day, while looking at the sky through the hospital window, Alex held Paul's hand.

"You know, sometimes I think this accident was a way to give us a second chance," she said thoughtfully.

Paul looked at her, moved. "I think so too. And I promise I won’t waste this chance, Alex."

.

After weeks of recovery and meetings at the hospital, Alex felt things were starting to get back on track. Paul was getting stronger and more independent every day, and she was beginning to feel more confident about their future together. But a new worry loomed over them: the media.

On a sunny Wednesday morning, Alex left the hospital after another visit to Paul. He was in a good mood, making progress in physical therapy. However, the outside world quickly imposed itself when she arrived at UBA.

As she got out of the car, Alex was surrounded by reporters and photographers. Flashes went off, and microphones were pushed towards her.

"Alex, how is Paul today?" asked a reporter.

"Are you two back together?" shouted another.

Alex's heart raced. She took a deep breath, trying to maintain her composure. Chip was waiting at the entrance and quickly came to her, trying to fend off the reporters.

"Give her space! Let her through!" Chip ordered.

Alex forced a smile. "Paul is fine, thank you. But I need to get to work now," she said, dodging the questions.

Inside the building, Alex and Chip walked side by side through the corridors. Chip looked at Alex with concern.

"They won’t leave you alone, you know that, right?" he said softly.

"I know, Chip. But we need to focus on what matters: Paul's recovery and our work here," she replied, trying to sound convincing.

Chip nodded. "If you need anything, I’m here, okay?"

.

Alex tried to concentrate on her tasks at work, but the questions and curious looks from her colleagues were constant. The tension was mounting, and the worry about the public exposure of her relationship with Paul bothered her.

During the coffee break, her colleague, Mia, approached. "How are you dealing with all this? It must be tough," she asked sympathetically.

"It's been difficult, Mia. The media won’t stop speculating about us, and that only makes everything harder," Alex confessed, finally feeling comfortable enough to vent.

.

That night, after a long day at work, Alex sat on her couch, exhausted. The phone rang, and she heard Paul's familiar voice.

"Hi, Alex. How was your day?" he asked, his voice comforting.

"It was tough, Paul. The reporters didn’t give me a minute of peace at UBA," she replied, worried.

Paul sighed. "I've been thinking a lot. Maybe it’s time to stop hiding and face this together," he suggested firmly.

She pondered for a moment. "You’re right. We need to stop hiding. They will always make up stories. Right now, the focus is your recovery. We don’t need to explain ourselves to them; they’ve already made up their versions."

That night, Alex lay in bed, reflecting on the day. She felt she was on the right path, finally leaving the past behind and making room for a promising future with Paul. There were still many challenges ahead, but she was determined to face them with Paul by her side.

.

Alex and Paul also faced their own fears. She feared being hurt again, while he struggled with guilt and the need to show he had truly changed.

On a quiet night in the hospital, Paul opened his heart. "Alex, I’m scared. Scared of failing you again."

Alex held his hand. "We all have fears, Paul. But maybe we can overcome them together."

With determination, they decided to face the challenges head-on. They began to make plans for the future, but with caution. Starting with Alex, who convinced Paul to spend the first weeks of his recovery at her apartment.

Alex looked at Paul seriously. "Paul, I’ve been thinking… and I’d like you to consider spending the first weeks of your recovery at my apartment."

Paul raised an eyebrow, surprised. "At your apartment? Alex, I don’t want to be a burden to you. Besides, I could go to my house in the Hamptons, where I’d have more space and peace."

Alex shook her head, determined. "No, Paul. Listen to me. If you stay in New York, you’ll be closer to the hospital and the doctors who’ve been treating you. Besides, I’ll be more relieved knowing I can be by your side, helping as needed."

Paul opened his mouth to respond, but Alex continued. "You know I have a guest room, and we can adapt it for your needs. Besides, you don’t need to worry about bothering me. I want to do this, Paul. I want to be by your side."

Paul sighed, looking into Alex’s eyes. "I don’t want you to feel like you have to take care of me. I’ve caused you so much pain in the past..."

Alex leaned in and held his hand. "Paul, I choose to take care of you. What matters now is the present and the future. We’ve been through so much, and I believe this is our chance to start over."

Paul looked at her, seeing the determination in her eyes. He knew she was serious and that refusing would disregard her feelings. "Okay, Alex. I accept. But promise, if at any moment you feel it’s too much, tell me and I’ll go to the Hamptons."

Alex had to admit she was scared to take Paul home, knowing they hadn’t yet decided 100% if they would rekindle their romantic relationship. But the thought of not having him nearby during his recovery filled her with panic.

Chapter Text

After weeks in the hospital, Paul was finally ready to go home. Alex felt both anxious and a bit nervous about taking care of him at home. She had prepared the apartment to make sure Paul had everything he needed for a comfortable recovery.

"Today's the big day," she said, walking into his hospital room with a smile. "Ready to go home?"

Paul nodded, looking hopeful. "More than ready. I can't stand these white walls any longer."

When they arrived at Alex's apartment, Paul was greeted with a warm and thoughtfully arranged environment. She had organized everything to make his mobility and comfort easier.

"Home sweet home," Alex said as they stepped out of the elevator and into her apartment.

"It's perfect, Alex. Thanks for everything," Paul replied, feeling grateful.

Paul still had trouble walking and was in a lot of pain from the accident and physical therapy. So, Alex helped him to the living room sofa where he could be more comfortable.

"I was thinking, you mentioned the Hamptons. If you want, I can ask Amanda to bring Benji here. Benny would love having a friend to make a mess with."

"That sounds great, but he's a beach dog. Not sure how he'll adapt to your fancy New York apartment."

"He was adopted by a billionaire. He'll adapt just fine. I'll message Amanda," she said, picking up her phone to contact Paul's assistant. "I'm thinking about taking a few days off. Since the merger, I haven't had any time at home. I think this is the right time."

"Whatever you prefer, Alex. But don't feel obliged to make this choice just to babysit a fifty-year-old billionaire."

"Paul, I won't be your babysitter. I want to be by your side while you recover, that's all. I'll do my best to make sure everything goes smoothly. I need you to understand once and for all that all the care I'm giving you has nothing to do with pity."

Paul looked at her. "Thank you, Alex. Even after all this time, it means a lot."

.

The first days were the hardest. Alex divided her time between finishing some work tasks at home, taking care of Paul, and looking after the newest resident of New York, Benji, the Golden Retriever who followed Paul all around the house. She prepared meals or ordered delivery since Paul knew she wasn't a great cook. She helped him with basic physical therapy exercises and made sure he took his medications on time. Despite the fatigue, she felt satisfied seeing him improve every day.

One evening, while Alex was making dinner, Paul watched her from the living room, feeling grateful and a bit guilty for all the extra work.

"Alex, I know this isn't easy for you. I appreciate everything you're doing."

Alex turned, smiling. "Paul, we're in this together. And I'm happy to take care of you."

.

Their daily life brought moments of intimacy and rediscovery. They spent evenings watching movies, talking, and sharing memories. Alex found out Paul still liked to cook and was holding back from taking over the kitchen. After he admitted this, they started making special dinners together, bringing some normalcy to their days.

One night, while watching an old comedy, Paul held Alex's hand.

"These moments give me the strength to go on," he said sincerely.

"They're important to me too, Paul. We're rediscovering each other, and it's beautiful," Alex replied, feeling more connected to him.

.

Despite progress, there were tough days. Paul sometimes felt frustrated with his slow recovery, and Alex did her best to keep him motivated.

"Today was rough," Paul said after a tough physical therapy session.

"There will be days like this," Alex replied, sitting next to him. "But every little step is a victory. We're in this together, remember?"

Paul smiled, feeling more hopeful. "Thanks for reminding me."

Later that day, Paul was in the shower while Alex relaxed on the couch with her two furry roommates. The house was completely silent except for the sound of running water.

Alex heard a loud crash from Paul's suite and ran to the bedroom, scared. She stopped at the door, calling out first. "Paul, are you okay?"

"Yes, I slipped and fell. Sorry for scaring you. I pushed myself too hard in therapy today and should've waited before showering."

"Do you need help getting up?" she asked, concerned.

"I'll try now, just a moment." After another thud, Alex grew tense, worried he was hurting himself more.

"Paul, I'm coming in to help. You'll end up seriously hurting yourself." She opened the door without waiting for a response.

Alex hadn't imagined that, upon entering the bathroom, the first memory she'd have would be of the many showers they had taken together when they were a couple. Realizing the gravity of the situation, she quickly pushed those thoughts aside and ran toward the shower, not even bothering to turn off the water. Alex sat down on the floor, knowing it would be impossible to lift a man who was 1,86 meters tall by herself.

"Hi," she said, smiling at the oddness of the situation.

"Never thought I'd be naked on the shower floor with the woman I love while she's fully dressed," Paul said, making Alex burst into laughter.

"If you want, I can take my clothes off too," she joked. Maybe that wasn't the best response, but it was the first thing that came to her mind.

"You said I'd hurt myself more. Didn't think it would be for that reason."

"Okay, enough. I'll turn off the shower and help you hold onto the wall. That's our best chance to get out of here." Alex knew Paul well and realized he'd rather risk hurting himself for a quickie in the shower.

After turning off the water and drying Paul, Alex did her best to support him and lift him off the floor. She wasn't sure where she got the strength, but her idea worked.

"Did you finish your shower, or do you need help with anything?" she asked before leaving the bathroom.

"No, I was done. I just need to sit now."

"Okay, I'll take you to the living room sofa and then change out of these wet clothes."

.

Despite the tender moments, there were challenges. Media pressure was intense, and after Alex's vacation was publicized, paparazzi often tried to photograph Paul leaving or entering Alex's apartment.

"Let's ignore the noise outside and focus on what really matters," Alex said one evening after another speculative report appeared online.

Paul agreed. "We know the truth, Alex. And that's what matters."

.

Over time, Paul gained strength and independence. He still needed help, but they celebrated each moment he could do something on his own. One morning, he managed to walk across the living room without support, a significant milestone.

"You did it, Paul!" Alex exclaimed, clapping her hands in excitement.

"Thank you, Alex. For everything. I don't know what I would do without you," Paul replied, hugging her.

.

Taking care of Paul brought them closer, strengthening their bond. They knew there was still a long road ahead, but they were determined to face it together. Each day brought new challenges and victories, and they learned to appreciate every little moment.

That night, as Alex got ready for bed, Paul came into her room, held her hand, and said, "Alex, I feel like we're on the right track. Thank you for believing in me and giving us this second chance."

Alex smiled, her heart warmed. "Always, Paul. Always."

That was the first night since their reunion that Alex asked Paul to sleep and spend the night with her. It felt like the right thing to do after so many days living together 24 hours a day.

Lying on Paul's chest, Alex convinced herself that they were already back to being a couple like before. The only thing she knew was that she wasn't yet ready to cross the line of intimacy. She knew that once they had any kind of intimate contact, there would be no turning back.

Chapter 5

Chapter Text

Some days later, on a Friday morning, sunlight streamed through the windows, lighting up Alex's apartment. Paul sat at the table, enjoying the breakfast Alex had made. He felt stronger every day, and Alex's support was key to his recovery.

"Good morning," Alex said, walking into the kitchen with a smile. "How are you feeling today?"

"Better every day, thanks to you," Paul replied, holding her hand and giving her fingers a light kiss.

"I was thinking, if you're up for it, we could spend the weekend in the Hamptons. You can relax, and Benji and Benny can enjoy playing on the beach. Your next physical therapy session isn't until next Tuesday."

"That’s the best idea you’ve had," Paul responded, pulling her gently against him and giving her a quick kiss.

The kiss caught Alex off guard, but instead of feeling tense, she felt lighter than she had in months, maybe even years.

Paul, on the other hand, seemed to tense up, afraid he had crossed a line. To show everything was okay, Alex pulled him back and initiated a real kiss. She wrapped her arms around Paul's neck like she hadn’t in a long time. It felt as good as the kisses they shared two years ago, maybe even better.

Understanding the signal, Paul didn't waste time and held her by the waist, holding her as if his life depended on it. It was a sweet kiss, charged with two years of longing.

"Wow! That was..." Alex began, stopping mid-sentence to let out a sigh. "Has anyone ever told you you're a great kisser?" she asked, making Paul smile mischievously.

"An old girlfriend. She's a pretty famous journalist, you might know her. She always liked to point out how great I was at tasks that required using my mouth," Paul replied, leaving Alex blushing.

"Okay, enough of that. Suitcases don't pack themselves. You call Amanda and ask her to get everything ready while I organize the dogs' things."

.

The sun was shining brightly as Alex and Paul drove to Paul's house. In the back seat, the couple's dogs, Benji and Benny, were excited, wagging their tails eagerly. Alex looked at Paul, who seemed radiant with joy.

"I can't wait to see the beach again," Paul said, smiling.

"Me too. It'll be great to have a weekend just for us," Alex replied, holding his hand.

When they arrived at the house, Alex was impressed by the beauty of the place. Two years had passed, and she had to admit that the only room she still remembered was the suite.

"Welcome back to our refuge," Paul said, hugging Alex from behind as they looked at the view.

"I can't wait to enjoy these days here with you," Alex replied, feeling a wave of peace and happiness.

.

The first day was full of outdoor activities. Alex and Paul walked along the beach with the dogs and swam in the sea. The joy of being together, away from everyday worries, was palpable.

"These moments are so precious," Paul said as he gently dried Alex with a towel after their swim.

"They really are. I'm so happy to finally be here with you," Alex replied, kissing him softly.

.

As the sun set, Alex and Paul decided to prepare a special dinner. They cooked together, laughing and sharing stories while the dogs rested at their feet.

"Let's make something special to celebrate your recovery," Alex suggested, grabbing a bottle of wine.

"Excellent idea," Paul agreed, as he connected his phone to the speakers scattered around the house with the song "Beyond" by Leon Bridges.

They served dinner on the porch, with the full moon illuminating the sea. Alex and Paul toasted to his recovery and the restart of their lives together.

"To a new era," Paul said, looking deeply into Alex's eyes.

"And to our love," Alex replied, feeling more connected to him than ever.

.

After dinner, Alex and Paul took a walk on the beach. The cold sand under their feet contrasted with the warm evening breeze. They walked hand in hand, talking about the future and making plans. The waves gently breaking beside them provided a peaceful and natural soundtrack.

"I'm so happy we're rediscovering each other," Alex said, looking at Paul with a smile.

"Me too, Alex. I should never have let you go," Paul replied, squeezing her hand affectionately.

.

When they returned to the beach house, the atmosphere was filled with an electric tension. Paul took Alex's hand and led her inside, his eyes burning with desire.

"Alex, there's something I need to say," Paul began, his voice soft and intense. "These past weeks have shown me how much I love you and need you in my life."

"I feel the same, Paul. I don't want to waste any more time away from you," Alex replied, her eyes shining.

The full moon shone through the windows, casting a soft glow in the room. They moved closer, and Paul wrapped Alex in a loving embrace. Their lips met in a passionate kiss, filled with longing and desire. Alex felt a shiver run through her body as Paul led her to the bedroom.

In the intimacy of that moment, they left behind all the pains of the past. Every touch, every kiss was a promise of a new beginning, a fresh start.

As they entered the bedroom, Paul closed the door and wrapped Alex in his arms again, this time with palpable urgency. Their lips met in a deep and intense kiss, and Alex felt her body respond instantly, a warmth spreading down her spine.

Paul led her slowly to the bed, his hands exploring every inch of her body with a familiarity that had been rediscovered. Alex responded with the same intensity, her hands tracing the contours of Paul's muscles, feeling the strength and vulnerability in every touch.

As they lay down, Paul's eyes met Alex's, and for a moment, they just looked at each other, absorbing the depth of the love and connection between them. "I love you," Paul whispered, his voice laden.

"I love you too, Paul," Alex replied, her voice trembling with desire and emotion.

Their bodies moved in perfect harmony, every touch, every kiss increasing the passion and need to be together. Alex felt each moment as a rediscovery, every sensation intensified by the time they had spent apart.

Paul explored Alex's body with agile fingers, gliding over her curves, eliciting sighs of pleasure. Alex arched her body in response, her hands traveling over Paul's body, exploring every muscle, every line she had previously memorized.

When they finally joined, it was as if time had stopped. Every movement was a promise, a reaffirmation of the love they shared. The soft moans and whispers of love filled the room, creating a symphony of passion and connection.

They gave themselves completely to each other, letting desire and love guide them. The intensity of the moment was almost overwhelming, and every second was a celebration of their reunion and renewed love.

Afterwards, as they rested in each other's arms, still breathing heavily, Alex and Paul felt a deep peace. The moonlight bathed the bed, creating an aura of serenity around them. They fell asleep together, their bodies entwined, ready to face whatever challenges the future might bring.

.

At dawn, the soft morning light woke them. Alex woke up first, watching Paul sleep peacefully beside her. She felt a wave of gratitude and deep love. She gently kissed his forehead, and Paul opened his eyes, smiling when he saw her.

"Good morning," Paul murmured, pulling Alex closer.

"Good morning," she replied, feeling her heart warm. "Ready to start a new chapter together?"

Paul held Alex's face between his hands, his eyes reflecting determination and love, and kissed her lips. "I can't wait to see what the future holds," he replied, smiling.

Chapter Text

The sun had already risen when Alex opened her eyes again and found Paul still asleep beside her. She smiled, seeing him so peaceful and relaxed. Feeling renew from the night before, Alex got up quietly so as not to wake him and headed to the kitchen to try making breakfast.

As the ground coffee beans filled the kitchen with their strong and comforting aroma, Alex looked out the window to the beach, where Benji and Benny played in the sand. The simple happiness of that moment filled her heart, and she allowed herself to dream of a future where moments like this would be the norm.

Soon after, Paul woke up and followed the smell of coffee to the kitchen. He found Alex handling some fresh fruits.

"Good morning, babe," he said, hugging her from behind and kissing her neck gently.

"Good morning," Alex replied, turning to kiss him. "I made breakfast. Shall we eat on the porch?"

"Perfect," Paul replied with a smile, helping carry the food to the porch table.

Sitting at the table, they enjoyed breakfast with a view of the sea, talking about their plans and hopes for the future.

"I was thinking," Alex began, hesitantly. "Maybe we should consider spending more time here. We could make this place our retreat."

Paul nodded thoughtfully. "I love that idea. We need a place where we can escape from everything and just be ourselves."

.

After breakfast, they decided to explore more of the area around the beach house. They walked hand in hand along the coast, accompanied by Benji and Benny, talking about everything.

"Have you thought about going back to work?" Alex asked, curious.

"Yes, but I want to do it at my own pace," Paul replied. "I want to make sure I'm fully recovered before diving back into work. And you? Any plans?"

"I'm thinking of writing another book," Alex confessed. "Something based on my experiences as an interviewer, maybe I'll talk about you in the book."

Paul smiled, admiringly. "I would love to read that."

.

Back at the house, Alex and Paul spent the afternoon relaxing. Alex read a book while Paul lay beside her, petting the dogs. The simple act of being together, without hurry or worries, was a blessing they both deeply appreciated.

Later, Alex suggested a picnic on the beach since Paul was still not cleared to go surfing. They prepared some snacks, grabbed a blanket, and settled on the sand, with the dogs happily running around.

As the sun began to set, creating a spectacle of colors in the sky, Alex felt overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude and peace. She looked at Paul, who was lying beside her, and smiled.

"This is definitely our happy place," she said softly.

"And I couldn't imagine being anywhere else," Paul replied, holding her hand.

.

That night, back at the house, the couple decided to watch a movie. They chose a romantic classic, cuddling on the couch with a glass of wine. During the movie, Paul couldn't help but watch Alex, noticing how she seemed lighter and happier.

When the movie ended, Alex turned to Paul. "These last few days have been amazing. I feel like we're really starting something new."

"I feel that too," Paul agreed, pulling her closer. "And no matter what the future holds, I know we can face it all together."

Before going to sleep, Alex and Paul exchanged promises for the future. They decided that they would always prioritize their relationship, communicating openly and honestly, and never letting difficulties come between them again.

"Let's make this house our retreat, our special place," Paul said.

"And our love, our fortress," Alex added, smiling.

.

The sun was still low on the horizon when Alex and Paul began packing for the return trip. The house in the Hamptons, now full of comforting memories, felt like a hard place to leave. Benji and Benny, as if sensing the change in the air, were calmer, watching their owners' every move.

"I'll miss this place," Alex said, closing the last suitcase and looking around the living room.

"Me too," Paul agreed, grabbing the car keys. "But we'll be back. This is just a goodbye for now."

On the way back, the mood in the car was calm. The coastal road provided spectacular views of the sea, and Alex and Paul chatted excitedly about the next steps in their lives. The dogs lay on the back seat, tired from the adventures of the past few days.

"I've thought a lot about what we discussed," Paul said, breaking the silence. "And I think writing a book is a fantastic idea. You have so many amazing stories to tell."

"Thank you, baby," Alex replied, smiling. "I'm already full of ideas. And what about you? Have you thought about what you'll do first when you get back to work?"

"I want to focus on projects that really matter. Maybe invest in initiatives that make a difference in people's lives," Paul said, reflecting. "The accident made me rethink my priorities."

.

When they arrived back in New York, Alex felt a mix of emotions. The apartment felt different, almost strange after the peaceful days at the beach. However, there was a sense of comfort in seeing their home again.

Benji and Benny ran excitedly down the hallway as soon as they got out of the elevator, happy to be back in their familiar territory. The two unloaded the suitcases, laughing and talking about the trip.

"It's good to be home," Alex said, sighing with relief as she walked towards the suite.

"Yes, it is," Paul agreed, following right behind her. "We'll unpack later. For now, how about some coffee?"

.

That night, Alex and Paul decided to cook together. They prepared a simple but delicious dinner and sat at the table, feeling grateful for the journey they shared and the path they still had ahead of them.

"These last few days were exactly what we needed," Alex said, raising her wine glass for a toast.

"To our new beginning," Paul said, clinking his glass against hers.

After dinner, they settled on the couch with the dogs, watching a random tv show and enjoying each other's company. There was a new lightness in their interactions, a rediscovered intimacy that made them feel more connected than ever.

As the night wore on, they felt more connected than ever. The worries of the outside world seemed distant and insignificant compared to the love and complicity they shared. When the series ended, Alex turned off the TV and turned to Paul, who was looking at her tenderly.

Paul took the opportunity to pull Alex closer, their lips meeting in a gentle kiss that quickly became more intense. They kissed passionately, their bodies responding to the heat and urgency of the moment.

Without letting go of Alex, Paul lifted her and carried her to the bedroom. With a delicate and slightly clumsy urgency, he laid her on the bed, his eyes never leaving hers. Each piece of clothing was removed with a mix of desire and tenderness, revealing skin against skin, as the accumulated tension between them slowly dissolved.

Paul slid his fingers over the curves of Alex's body, exploring every contour as if it were the first time. His touches were both firm and gentle, causing shivers throughout Alex's body. She arched her back, moaning softly as he kissed her neck, her collarbone, slowly descending.

Alex, traced Paul's body with her hands, feeling the tense muscles and warm skin under her fingers. She delighted in every reaction she provoked in him, the sighs and moans that escaped his lips when she found particularly sensitive spots.

When Paul finally took her in his arms, it was as if the world stopped. They moved in a perfectly synchronized rhythm, each movement an expression of love and desire. The intensity increased with each moment, their bodies merging in a dance of pure passion.

Paul whispered words of affection and desire in Alex's ear, each word intensifying the heat between them. She held him tightly, her nails gently digging into his back as he took her higher, deeper.

The climax came overwhelmingly, a wave of pleasure that engulfed them completely. They called out each other's names as their bodies trembled with the force of the shared orgasm. Even as they caught their breath, they continued moving together, prolonging the pleasure as long as possible.

Finally, exhausted but incredibly satisfied, they fell into bed, still entwined. Paul kissed Alex's forehead softly, his fingers caressing her hair. "I love you," he murmured, his voice full of emotion.

"I love you too, Paul," Alex replied, her eyes shining with tears of happiness. They snuggled together, their bodies still warm from the love they had shared.
The first rays of the sun found the two entwined in bed, exhausted but content. Alex and Paul fell asleep with smiles on their faces, their bodies intertwined in an embrace that promised never to break.

The night was filled with whispers, laughter, and caresses, each moment more intimate and profound than the last. At that moment, nothing else mattered except the love and connection they shared. And as the sun rose, a new hope shone for the future they were now ready to face together.

.

Alex woke up first, watching Paul sleep beside her. He looked so peaceful, so vulnerable, and she felt a wave of love wash over her.

When Paul opened his eyes, Alex was there, smiling at him. "Good morning," she said softly.

"Good morning," he replied, returning the smile. "I could get used to this."

Alex laughed, feeling happier than ever. "Me too. I think we need to talk about what's next."

Notes:

This is the last chapter, guys.

Forgive me for writing such a short fic, but my intention with this story was to really focus on them having a simple relationship, without constant obstacles. I thought this was the perfect time to end it.

Thank you to everyone who read and commented. In the next few days, I promise to bring a new, more complete story, with plenty of drama and EXPLICIT. ₊˚⊹♡

Chapter Text

After a lazy breakfast in bed, Alex and Paul sat down to talk. They both knew that last night had changed everything. They couldn’t keep pretending to be just friends or exes.

“I don’t want to hide what we have anymore,” Paul said, holding Alex’s hand. “No more secrets. I want everyone to know I’m with you, that I love you.”

Alex nodded, feeling a mix of relief and excitement. “Me too. We’ve been through so much together, and our love is something we should celebrate, not hide.”

So, they decided to give an exclusive interview to announce their relationship. Alex reached out to a trusted colleague at the network, who agreed to handle the interview discreetly and respectfully.

.

Days flew by after the couple returned to the city. Both settled back into their routines, with Alex diving into her journalism projects and hosting TMS, while Paul resumed his business and philanthropic work. Paul’s recovery was complete, and he was stronger and more determined than ever.

It was a sunny morning when Alex woke up. She stretched in bed and looked at Paul, still sleeping peacefully beside her. The dogs were snuggled at the foot of the bed, breathing quietly.

"Today’s the day," Alex thought, getting up carefully so she wouldn’t wake Paul.

In the kitchen, Alex made breakfast while reflecting on the past few weeks. The journey that brought them here was full of challenges, but also precious moments that strengthened their bond.

"Good morning, my love," Paul said, entering the kitchen and kissing Alex on the neck.

"Good morning," she replied, smiling. "Ready for today?"

"More than ever," Paul replied, grabbing two cups of coffee. "I think it’s time to take this step."

"We need to be honest," Alex started. "We’ve come so far together, overcome so many obstacles. It doesn’t make sense to keep hiding our relationship."

"I agree," Paul said, looking into her eyes. "But I want to make sure we’re ready for what’s to come. The media can be relentless, and there will be opinions from all sides."

Alex took a deep breath. "I’m ready to face it, as long as we’re together. What matters is the truth and what we feel for each other. They can say whatever they want, but no one can take away what we have."

Paul smiled, admiring Alex’s determination. "You’ve always been the bravest person I know. Let’s do this together."

.

The afternoon arrived quickly, and Alex and Paul were ready to face the world together. They sat side by side in the studio, holding hands. The lights and cameras were set up, and the interviewer started with light questions about their careers and recent projects.

Finally, the big moment came. “Alex, Paul, there are a lot of rumors about your relationship. What can you tell us about it?”

Alex looked at Paul, who smiled and squeezed her hand. “We are together,” he said firmly. “After my accident, with a lot of reflection and growth, we decided to give our relationship another chance. And we thought that now, after my full recovery, it was the right time to share our love with the world.”

Alex continued, feeling confident and secure. “Our relationship has gone through many ups and downs, but what we feel for each other has never changed. We are ready for this new phase and appreciate everyone’s support.”

Alex held Paul’s hand tightly. "We’re in this together," she said, feeling a mix of anxiety and excitement.

"And we’ll face whatever comes, with heads held high," Paul replied, squeezing her hand.

As soon as the interview aired, the reactions were immediate. Social media was flooded with messages of support, curiosity, and, of course, some criticism. But surprisingly, most people seemed genuinely happy for them.

.

Alex and Paul were sitting on her apartment sofa, the afternoon sun gently illuminating the room. They had spent the day together, discussing the future and enjoying each other’s company. Paul’s accident and recovery in the hospital had been a turning point in their lives, and now, with him recovered, it was time to think about new steps.

"Paul, I have something important to ask you," Alex said, turning to him with a serious but loving look.

He looked at her, intrigued, and held her hand. "Of course, babe. Whatever you want."

Alex took a deep breath before continuing. "I know a lot has changed in the past few months, and I also know we’re still dealing with some things. But I was thinking… why don’t you move in here? I mean, officially. You don’t need to keep going back and forth from the Hamptons, and I would love to have you closer to me."

Paul looked at her for a moment, surprised, but then a warm smile spread across his face. "Alex, are you sure? This is a big step."

"I know it is, but I want to take this step with you. And I feel like we’re ready. After everything we’ve been through, I want to start a new phase of our life together, under the same roof," she said, squeezing his hand.

Paul leaned in to kiss her gently, his lips touching hers with a tenderness that spoke more than any words. When he pulled away, he held Alex’s face in his hands. "I would love to move in here. There’s nothing I want more than to be with you every day."

Alex smiled, feeling immense relief and happiness. "Then it’s decided. Let’s start moving."

.

Finally, on moving day, everything was ready. Paul brought his last boxes and placed them in Alex’s apartment. They looked at each other in the middle of the living room, surrounded by boxes and rearranged furniture, feeling a wave of accomplishment. Benji and Benny were excited, running back and forth as if they sensed the importance of the moment.

As night fell, the apartment finally felt complete. Alex and Paul were exhausted but happy. They sat on the sofa, surrounded by empty boxes, feeling the fulfillment of a dream.

"Welcome to your new home, Paul," Alex said, hugging him.

"Our home," he corrected, holding her tight.

That night, they decided to celebrate with a special dinner. Paul prepared Alex’s favorite dish, and they toasted to the new beginning with glasses of wine. "To new beginnings and a future together," Paul said, raising his glass.

"To new beginnings," Alex repeated, clinking her glass with his.

After dinner, they went to bed, exhausted but incredibly happy. Alex snuggled into Paul’s arms, feeling the security and love that only he could provide.

"We’re finally where we should be," Paul said, kissing Alex’s forehead.

"Yes, we are," Alex replied, closing her eyes and feeling more secure and loved than ever.

The future seemed bright and full of possibilities. Together, they were ready to face anything that came their way.

"And now, what’s next?" Paul asked, hugging Alex.

"Whatever we want," she replied, smiling. "We’re together, and that’s all that matters."
