Chapter Text
Deep in the depths of space there stood a man looking into a forge where a single ring sat. He took it out knowing that it was ready to be quenched despite it not looking hot. Looking towards the lights of the Emotional Spectrum he thought for a second on which type of ring was needed when something happened. The ring shot off into the nothingness of space. The man looked where the ring went with both confusion and slight amusement.
“Contact the Green Lanterns of Sector 2814, let them know that a new Lantern is going to be appearing in Mustafu Japan on Earth,” the man said through a communicator.
“What Corp if he asks?” a voice responded.
“Hah, tell him that it could be any. I finished forging it and before I could quench it into any of the colors it shot off. The damage to the emotional spectrum might be showing now,” the man hummed in thought. “I’ll get to work on the next one.”
POV Izuku Midoriya
I stood there watching as Bakugou was caught by the sludge villain and could do nothing against him. Heroes stood by as no one did anything to help him in any way shape or form.
Part of me thinks that this is karma, but he doesn’t deserve this. I can’t stand back and watch him die! I NEED TO HELP HIM!
Izuku Midoriya, you have the ability to overcome great fear. Take this ring and use it to protect the universe. A voice said in my head.
I watched as a silver ring appeared in front of me before shifting to a bright green color, one that was recognizable as being of the Green Lantern Corps. I watched as it slid itself onto my right hand. I felt as the energy jolted through my body as a green glow emerged from the ring and covered my body as my school uniform was changed into a skin tight green and black outfit with a lantern symbol on the chest. I also had a square domino style mask. I looked up and knew what to do.
I leaped over the crowd and looked at the sludge villain. I covered my arm in green light energy and created an enlarged version that would allow me to punch with the strength of All Might. I then threw a downward punch towards the sludge. The strength of the force threw him off of Bakugou and into the walls. The flames were all extinguished by the pressure that was sent from the punch. I stood there for a second before a single drop of water fell from the sky, then another.
I stood there looking at the ring now on my hand in amazement as rain poured down from the sky.
“Deku you quirkless bastard! How the fuck did you get a Lantern Ring?!” Bakugou shouted, rushing me.
“He’s quirkless?”
“He’s worthless but has a Lantern Ring?”
“He’s a fake Green Lantern.”
“He should take it off and give it to that other boy.”
“A waste of a good Lantern Ring if you ask me.”
I stood there as I heard all of the whispers in the crowd of people. I felt as a hand was placed on my shoulder.
“Young man, you are under arrest for vigilantism and interfering with hero operations,” Death Arms said.
“Actually he won’t be,” a voice said from the shadows.
POV Bruce Wayne aka Batman
“Stewart, where are you going?” I asked, as he walked towards the landing platform.
“A new Lantern Ring was sent to Japan, so I need to collect them fast,” he said.
“I’ll meet you down there, do you-”
“Mustafu.”
“Thanks,” I said, grateful for him not beating around the bush.
I went to the teleporter where Martian Manhunter was running the system.
“Where to?”
“Mustafu Japan, see if you can locate a Lantern Ring’s energy and send me as close to it as possible but hidden enough to not be caught,” I said.
“Locked on, good luck dealing with the Metahuman society,” he said, entering the coordinates.
I felt as I was teleported down to Earth on the roof of a building. I looked into the alley where a crowd was gathered. The first thing I saw was a giant purple sludge encasing a young man while the “Pro Heroes” were standing around complaining about not having the right meta-ability to save him. A quick movement happened and a person leaped from the crowd to right next to the villain. Standing there was a young boy with dark green hair who was wearing a stylized version of the Green Lantern uniform. It wasn’t exactly too different from the others, but personalized enough that he would stand out as his own. I watched as his hand was covered in an enlarged light creation of it. He then threw a wild punch aimed downward and sent the sludge flying away. A moment passed before it started to rain from the pressure sent from his attack.
“Deku you quirkless bastard! How the fuck did you get a Lantern Ring?!” the boy who was trapped shouted, rushing him.
Oh, so he doesn’t have a meta-ability, great . I said, realizing how everyone was turning on him before a man said that he was going to arrest the boy.
I lept down behind the man and made my presence known as the boy looked defeated.
“Actually he won’t be,” I said. “According to Japanese law you need to use a Meta-Ability to be charged with vigilantism. That and he will be going with Green Lantern once he arrives. He asked me to help him locate the new Lantern since he didn’t want to be seen flying all over Japan and cause panic,” I lied while also activating my locator.
“Are you serious? You’re going to let Deku become a fucking Green Lantern? He’s a worthless waste of space. If you want a true hero look at me, I’m going to be the next fucking number one hero, as great as All might and then some!” the victim yelled, causing an explosion in his hand.
I silently noted that the Lantern flinched slightly.
“Aren’t you going to arrest him for illegal usage of a meta-ability?” I asked. “You just watched him as he used his meta-ability so now you legally have to arrest him.”
“I wasn’t paying attention to him, just this fake Green Lantern, don’t you know he’s quirkless? How can something like him become a Green Lantern?” the man asked.
“Simple,” Stewart said, appearing as he floated down to the ground. “He can overcome his own fear to help others. He has a great willpower that made the Lantern Ring determine that he is worthy of defending the universe from threats to it. He will learn to be greater than most and use a power stronger than a meta-ability.”
“Hah, Deku is a fucking worthless waste of space. Even with a stupid ring he’ll never be more powerful than me.”
“If you want to believe that you can, however, I need to lead him to the Watchtower to start his training with his Green Lantern Ring. Since flying is not as easy as one would expect we will go via teleportation. Also, if you want to contact your family you can,” Stewart said.
“Hah, Deku can’t because he has no fucking family. His parents got themselves killed once they learned how much of a disappointment he was, they practically jumped in front of those bullets,” the blonde boy chuckled, making my anger bubble.
“What is your name boy?” I growled.
“Katsuki Bakugou, why the fuck does it matter to you?” he asked.
“Because, if I catch word of you being in America I want to be able to tell Arkham Asylum what to put on your cell.”
“You mother fu-”
His sentence was cut off by us teleporting to the Watchtower.
“It seemed as if that conversation was going to go in circles,” Stewart said. “Now then, young man, you can let your guard down. You are safe to release the uniform. Your first time with the ring it normally doesn’t have a full charge so you are probably low on energy.”
I watched as the uniform vanished and the boy stood there in a school uniform. He was scrawny, even worse than Tim or Jason when I first agreed to them being Robin. I knew that he would get a boost in strength from the ring, but he would also require a boost in his normal strength the natural way.
“Um, a-are you sure th-that I should be a Green Lantern?” he asked.
“There is not a doubt in my mind. While you might not see or understand why you were chosen to answer this higher calling, one day you will. It could be a day or many years before then, but you will,” Stewart said. “Now then, tell me your name.”
“I-Izuku M-Midoriya, sir.”
“Izuku, you may call me John Stewart.”
“Hmm, Stewart, I have an idea and request. Can we have him work with Young Justice before you send him off to Oa? Assign him to one of the teams so he can get used to the basics of his powers working with them. Put him on the roster and have them decide who to team him up with,” I suggested.
“Not a bad idea, I can work with him on understanding the basics both up here and as a supervisor for them,” Stewart agreed. “Izuku, would you be alright with joining a team of heroes roughly your own age? They tend to put people on smaller teams that will work better together.”
“I-I don’t know. I-I’m just a q-quirkless, w-waste of space,” he stammered.
“So you don’t have a meta-ability, around half the Justice League are normal people just like you and I,” I said.
“W-what? B-but we were taught that o-only twenty percent of the world a-are quirkless.”
“One of Japan’s many lies. Actually only twenty percent of the world, not including Japan, have meta-abilities but the rest do include aliens, supernatural creatures, hybrids, and everything else,” I said. “You are a normal human being, they are the ones who aren’t.”
At that point he started muttering at a speed that made me think that he might have a latent connection to the Speed Force.
“I believe he is having what is commonly referred to as an emotional breakdown. I surmise that if he spends time with the heroes and sees that they aren’t powered by meta abilities he should be fine,” J’onn said, walking to us. “I can only catch about every tenth word but I think he has correctly guessed your identity as well as Superman’s and a few others.”
“So his mind is sharp, good,” Stewart said as I tried to figure out how he figured that out.
“I’m going to message the Titans, let them know that they will be assisting in his training,” I said, walking off.
I went to the communication center of the Watchtower and sent a call to the Titans.
“ Batman, is everything alright? ” Nightwing asked, answering.
“Yes, a new Green Lantern has been recruited and he’s lacking in physical strength and some social aspects of life. I want to have him join Young Justice, put him on whichever team you think works best with his personality,” I explained.
“ Ok, something’s up. You’re more cagey than normal ,” he said.
“According to Martian Manhunter, this kid has figured out my identity and I believe that it’s safe to assume that he’s figured out most of the League’s. He has a good head on his shoulders, but from the looks of it was bullied and ostracized by his peers for not being born with a meta-ability. Make sure that he gets some good human interaction, maybe let Jinx loose on him,” I said, knowing that she was still a bit on the chaotic side and tended to ignore personal space despite having given up evil.
“ I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for the heads up. Oh, and Al said that he’s making pasta with cream sauce and chicken breasts, ” he added.
“Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind,” I said, turning down the communication line. Dick hasn’t called him Al in years. Pasta- a flimsy lead. Cream- Bigger than Gotham. Sauce- Have powers of some sort. Chicken- Have fought them before. Breasts- Female. So, a flimsy lead on a female with powers that we’ve fought before that’s planning something bigger than Gotham but requires him to tell/warn me in code. Hmm, could be Ivy and since Harley has started working with us occasionally he believes that she might warn Ivy if she knows that we know something. Possibly. Or it could be an even bigger threat. I’ll start looking into this once we get Izuku set up.
An alarm went off that we were getting a call. I answered it and a larger African American woman appeared on the screen.
“Amanda Waller, normally you don’t call and just find us on the streets,” I said.
“ Tell me, why is Japan saying that the Justice League has abducted a citizen from there? ”
“A new Green Lantern was chosen there. As Green Lantern made his way to retrieve him for training I went knowing how they are there. I located the child and realized that he didn’t have a meta-ability. I believe that you know how it is in Japan, correct?”
“ Yes, he was most likely an outcast. ”
“So once they made it clear that they weren’t going to just let him go and would conduct experiments on him and the ring to place it on a hero they believed to be worthy we took him to help train him.”
“ Alright, for once I think I can actually understand and agree with what you did. I will state our position on this matter and even give your explanation to the President, ” she said, hanging up on me.
POV Izuku Midoriya
I stood there as my mind raced with thought after thought after thought. Japan was lying to everyone; I wasn’t weird, but actually normal; I have a Green Lantern Ring; I am with the Justice League; and they are offering to help me. After a bit I finally found myself calming down. I looked down at the ring on my finger and could feel the power from it. I then imagined myself in the uniform I had gotten and felt it shift my clothes into it.
I thought the other Green Lantern said that my energy would be low since I just got it. I can feel the energy of the ring, it’s not changing at all.
“Ah, nice to see that you finished your muttering spree,” Mr. Stewart said walking in. “Now then, I need to explain something to you quickly. In recent history many Lantern Rings have been destroyed. So we have had more forged despite us still not being able to fully repair the Emotional Light Spectrum from the attacks on it. Your ring was forged, but it wasn’t quenched in any of the colors. We don’t know if it will have any special abilities unlike others but we know that it will be safe for you to wear. One side effect would be that unlike most Lanterns you won’t have to charge your ring from the looks of it.”
“S-so what do I need to do?” I asked.
“Right now we need to work on your strength. So you will be going with the Young Justice to train your strength and fighting abilities. They have already been informed and agreed to assist you. If you are ready we can send you to them now so you can settle in,” he explained.
“A-alright, I think I’m ready.”
I was then encased in the same light that brought me up here and appeared in a different room where instead of a high tech room was cave-like.
“Welcome, I hope we can help you get better,” a younger man wearing a black suit with a blue winged chest said.
