Summary
In Westerio Society, Second sons are called the spares. They are not sent away like third or fourth sons yet very little place is given to them, unless they make for themselves. They are kept around as a spare, as the name goes, to replace the heir if something happens to them.
Then what of second daughters? In this patriarchal world of the Westero, what worth of a second daughter is to a man, a King to be exact, desperately trying for a male heir to fulfill a supposed prophecy? Perhaps not much.
Visenya Targaryen was born to Viserys and Aemma Targaryen after two years of their first Living child, Rhaenyra Targaryen. The relief to have a living child have already dim after their first daughter and the imminent disappointment crept up to the tired couple as the dragon egg put in their second daughter turn cold.
