Chapter 1: An Ordinary Day
Notes:
So I just got into Star Wars fandom. Let me give you the rundown of my knowledge: Original and Prequel Trilogy with some splattering of the wider lore. I will pick and choose what I want from Legends and Disney, but I'm sticking to my comfort zone.
I have written this chapter to gauge whether or not anyone would be interested in reading this. If people like it, I will be writing longr chapters.

Chapter Text
If Uncle Owen ever asked how they had gotten into this mess, Luke would have responded that technically it was Aunt Beru’s fault. It was supposed to be a regular trip to the general store, picking up some blue milk and other foodstuffs. Luke hadn’t even been planning on accompanying his aunt. However, seeing Biggs Darklighter again had reinvigorated his desire to join the Imperial Academy. He had hoped that he could convince his aunt to let him apply, knowing if she agreed, Uncle Owen could be persuaded to give permission.
“And its not like I won’t ever come back,” Luke continued as his aunt continued to browse the hubba gourds. “I’ll visit every chance I get.” Just because he was itching to explore didn't mean he wouldn't miss the people who raised and loved him.
Beru gave him a soft smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “I’m sure you will, but you know that’s not what we’re concerned about.” There was an edge of sadness in her voice.
Luke sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I know it’s dangerous, but what’s life without danger?” It was a weak joke; it was the only thing he could think to say at the moment.
“A long one,” Beru deadpanned. Despite himself, her nephew chuckled. She shot him a sympathetic look. “I make no promises, but I’ll talk to Owen.”
Luke’s eyes lit up and he kissed his aunt’s cheek, feeling overcome with elation. “Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me yet,” Beru said wryly, giving his arm a squeeze. “You know how stubborn your uncle can be. Not to mention protective of your well being.”
“And you’re not?” Luke teased.
“Always,” Beru responded as she placed the gourd in her bag. “Nonetheless, I want you to be happy. And if being a pilot instead of a farmer makes you happy then I will support you.”
Luke beamed at her. “I meant what I said about visiting every chance I get.”
“You better.”
While Aunt Beru paid for their foodstuffs, Luke went outside to start the landspeeder. As he stepped out of the store, he noticed a brown-haired girl standing nearby.
The first thing Luke immediately noticed about the girl was how out of place she seemed. She was wearing a dress made of white silk, far too fancy for anyone to wear on Tatooine, let alone Anchorhead. Her hair was done up in two elaborate braids. She kept glancing around as if she was searching for something or someone.
Luke knew it was none of his business, but he also knew that he was not the only one who would come to the conclusion that this girl was clearly foreign and alone. It wouldn’t be long before someone tried to take advantage, either rob her or capture her for more nefarious purposes. He wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he didn’t try to help her.
It's getting dark soon. And she doesn’t look like she has anywhere safe to go. With that thought in mind, Luke walked over to her. “Excuse me, miss?”
The girl whirled around to face him; her eyes narrowed suspiciously. Her hands disappeared into her sleeves. Luke stopped a few feet away from her, raising her hands to show her he was unarmed.
“Do you need any help?” he asked.
The girl studied him for a few moments, not relaxing her stance. “No. I’m fine. I’m just looking for an old friend.”
“Are you sure?” Luke questioned. He wasn’t sure what it was, but something about her demeanor made her words ring false. “Because if you want, you can come home with me."
She shot him a disgusted look. “I have a boyfriend.”
Luke blinked in confusion. Then his cheeks tinged pink when he realized the unintended implications of what he had just said. He spluttered in embarrassment. “Oh no! I wasn’t---I mean you are very pretty. But I didn’t—.”
He almost jumped out of his skin when a soft hand landed on his shoulder. He had never been more relieved when he saw that Aunt Beru materialized next to him. “What my nephew is trying to say is, if you would like, you can stay with us for the night. Then you can find your friend in the morning.”
The girl’s gaze bounced between them, scrutinizing their expressions for a hint of deceit. She let her hands drop to her side and she relaxed slightly. “I would never dream of imposing in any other circumstances, and I swear I will pay you---”
“Don’t give it another thought, child,” Beru interjected gently. “Our homestead is your homestead. I’m Beru Lars and this is my nephew, Luke.”
“Leia,” the girl replied, her lips curving up into a smile.
“Nice to meet you, Leia.” Luke extended his hand, hoping that she wouldn’t hold his earlier awkwardness against him.
Leia took his hand and shook it. “Likewise, Luke.” She sounded a touch warmer than she had minutes ago.
Luke let out a sigh of relief as Beru led the way to the landspeeder.
Notes:
I really just want to write a story where the adopted parents get some more time to shine. That doesn't mean that Vadar isn't going to pop up.
Obi-Wan will be nipping any Luke/Leia attraction in the bud. But for right now, as squicky as it is, Luke is going to have a little crush because Leia is a beautiful girl who he feels connected with. That being said, finding her pretty and being a dork around her is as far as it will go.
Chapter 2: Discovering Secrets

An innocent talk leads to a screaming match.

Chapter Text
Owen Lars liked the quiet life. Well as quiet as one could have on Tatooine. He preferred to keep his head down, stay out of trouble. Don’t get involved in matters that didn’t affect him.
Once upon a time, in his younger years, he had been at his wife and his stepmother’s side, freeing slaves, sabotaging the Hutts. But then Shami died, his father died soon after, and Luke had arrived. When Beru had placed Luke in his arms, telling him that his stepbrother was dead, Owen had decided then and there that if it was the last thing he did, he would protect his nephew.
Unfortunately, his beloved wife and dearest nephew seemed to be incapable of staying out of trouble. He admired their drive, he did. But hadn’t history proven that when off-worlders got involved, disaster was sure to follow?
So, when he arrived at his homestead and was introduced to Leia of Alderaan, he knew that trouble had come and was now sitting at his table as Beru served dinner. He was thinking of ways to interrogate her without his wife growing upset that he was being rude to a guest. However, before he could, his nephew beat him to it.
“What’s Alderaan like?” Luke asked as he dug into his Bantha Steak Soup.
“Oh, it’s lovely,” Leia told him, a smile lighting up her face. Her body langague was perfectly poised and graceful. Her manner reminded Owen of another highborn woman who had visited them decades ago. “It has snowcapped mountains, lust green flora, and vast oceans.”
Owen almost rolled his eyes. A typical Core Worlder, bragging about the colorful and bright scenery of their planet. It must be nice to be surrounded by beauty, never having to worry about dangers that plagued those who lived on the planets of the Outer Rim.
He felt someone nudge his foot, but when he glanced sideways, Beru was solely focused on listening to Leia chattering away about the cities and people of her planet. Luke was clearly enthralled by what she was saying.
When Leia took a breath, Owen decided it was time to cut in. “You are a long way from home, Miss. What brings you to Tatooine?” He tried not to wince when his wife stomped on his foot.
Leia’s position stiffened, her smile slipping slightly. She reached inside her sleeves an action Owen had witnessed her doing several times since meeting her. She wasn’t reaching for a weapon. No, she was checking to make sure that something was safe and hidden.
A thief or a spy, Owen concluded, his eyes narrowing. Either way, this did not bode well. What would happen to them if whoever was looking for the girl came to the Lars homestead? At best, they could be arrested for harboring a fugitive. At worst, they’d be killed.
“She’s looking for a friend,” Luke answered for her, feeling rather embarrassed at his uncle’s suspicious manner. He then turned to Leia. “What’s their name anyway? Maybe we know them.”
Leia’s gaze flickered between all three of them, scrutinizing their expressions. She was clearly weighing whether or not to trust them.
“You don’t have to tell us,” Beru assured her, digging her shoe into her husband’s leg. “It is none of our business.”
“I promise I will be gone by morning,” stated Leia. Her expression was serene but there was an undercut of sadness and guilt in her voice. Her baby face looked so much like Luke. And something about those warm brown eyes that reminded him of Shami.
“We’ll give you the supplies you’ll need,” Owen said gruffly, pushing his wife’s foot away.
“I couldn’t ask you to do that,” Leia protested.
Owen grunted, averting his gaze. “You’re not asking. We’re giving it to you.” Perhaps he was getting soft.
After dinner, Luke brought Leia to the guest room. Like every either room in the homestead, it was small and cramped. He felt almost ashamed to be offering it to someone whose home was probably big enough to fit all the huts and homesteads surrounding Anchorhead.
“I know it’s not much, but I hope you’ll be comfortable.” He scratched his neck as she sat down on the bed.
“It’s lovely,” Leia insisted. She chuckled at his disbelieving look. “What? Do you think I’m some pampered princess who prefers palaces?”
“No, of course not,” Luke stated, perhaps too quickly. “I just think this isn’t as nice as you’re used to.”
“Your home is very nice,” Leia contradicted. “And your aunt and uncle seem like good people.”
A smile tugged at Luke’s lips as he thought of the people who raised him. “They are. Aunt Beru is strong and loving. The best cook in all of Anchorhead. Uncle Owen is rough around the edges, but he means well. I hope you won’t take his…” He trailed off, searching for the right word.
“Gruffness?” Leia suggested. She reached inside her sleeve, her expression pensive. She averted her eyes. “And for the record, I don’t blame him. The reason I’m here could get you in a lot of trouble.”
Luke studied her for a moment, puzzled by her words. He had only met her a few hours ago, but he knew with absolute certainty that she was a good person. There was something in his gut that made him want to assist her.
He tried to lighten the tension a bit. “My family has gotten into a lot of trouble. My uncle thinks it is a Skywalker trait.”
Leia’s head shot up, shock flashing across her countenance. “Skywalker? Any relation to Anakin Skywalker? The jedi knight. Hero of the Clone Wars?”
Luke blinked. “Well, my father’s name was Anakin. But Uncle Owen always told me he was a navigator on a spice freighter. He never fought in any wars.”
The brunette’s brow furrowed in confusion. “I don’t suppose the name Obi-Wan Kenobi would mean anything to you, would it?”
“Kenobi? Like old Ben?” Luke inquired, growing more perplexed by the moment. Why would she be interested in the old hermit?
“He lives somewhere outside the Dune Sea, correct?” Leia asked. When Luke nodded, she pressed on. “Then that’s Obi-Wan. He was a jedi master and fought alongside Anakin Skywalker.”
Luke opened his mouth and closed it several times as his mind raced. She was telling the truth. He could feel it in his bones. But why would his uncle lie? And what about old Ben? Uncle Owen called him a crazy old hermit and had forbidden him to interact with him.
Suddenly feeling overwhelmed and wanting answers, Luke spun on his heels and darted out of the room, practically racing to the kitchen where he knew his uncle and aunt would still be up.
“Luke?” Aunt Beru saw him first, but Luke barely even registered her presence, his gaze zeroed in on his uncle.
“Was my father a pilot? Or was he a Jedi knight?” he interrogated, searching the older man’s face for a hint of deceit.
Uncle Owen’s gaze flickered from Luke to Leia who had hurriedly followed him. “You had no business telling him that.”
Leia’s expression was partly offended and partly incredulous. “I wasn’t aware that you were keeping his heritage a secret.”
Owen shot up from the table. “I was keeping him safe.”
“Now why don’t we all calm down and discuss this,” Beru suggested, placing a comforting hand on her husband’s arm.
Luke was fuming at his uncle. Not only did he lie, but now he was acting like he was in the right and even had the nerve to get angry at Leia, acting as if Luke was a child, not able to make his own decisions.
“Is this why you wanted to keep me on the farm?” he demanded. “And why you didn’t want me going near Ben Kenobi? You were afraid I’d find out about my father.”
“I was afraid you’d get yourself killed like your father!” Owen responded, his eyes flashing with anger. “They took him from his mother and forced him to fight their wars!”
Leia opened her mouth to protest, but Luke beat her to it. “At least he died a hero, instead of a bitter nobody like you!”
Everyone froze. Beru’s hand flew to her mouth as Leia suddenly found the wall very interesting. Owen just stood there, stupefied. Luke’s anger evaporated in an instance as horror at his own words overwhelmed him. He had gotten mad at his uncle countless times, but he had never spewed such hate at him.
“Uncle---” Luke began, finding his self-righteous outrage being replaced by guilt. His throat felt dry, wishing his uncle would start yelling at him again. Anything would be better than the silent hurt that was flickering on the older man’s face.
Before he could say anything, there was a beeping noise, signaling there were intruders on the property. Beru moved first, hurrying to where she stashed the blasters.
“Luke, I want you and Leia to get to the speeder and make for the Dune Sea,” Owen ordered. When he saw his nephew about to protest, he grabbed his shoulder. “Listen here, attana-noma. Anakin Skywalker sired you, but you are my boy. And as long as I draw breath, I’m going to protect you.”
“It’s all right.” Leia’s entire face lit up. “I know who is here. He won’t harm us.” She went to the entry dome and opened it up, just as their midnight visitor was about to knock.
The robed man pulled down his hood as he peered into the homestead, a smile tugging at his lips. “Hello there.”
Notes:
I could not resist.
Next time, round two of secrets and shouting.
In case anyone is wondering, Owen has some thoughts about the Jedi, not very nice thoughts. We will be touching on that as the story continues.
Attana-noma means nephew in Amatakka. Credit for the Amatakka language goes to Fialleril and his Double Agent Vader fic.
Please correct any mistakes I may have made.
