Chapter 1

Phoenix Wright was in love with Miles Edgeworth. It was written all over his face. Literally, ‘Nick x Edgeworth’ was written across his forehead in permanent marker.

“MAYA!” He yelled down the hall to a room filled with loud giggling.

“MAYA I SWEAR TO GOD I’M GONNA KILL YOU!” He ran down the hall chasing after Maya, who couldn’t stop her laughter.

“Nick you’ve got to admit, it was really funny!”

“Yeah, and I’m sure that our clients will find it funny too!”

“Oh yeah I forgot about that.” she murmured.

“You forgot that we have clients?” Phoenix questioned.

“Hey it’s not my fault! We both got drunk last night and we both have to deal with  the consequences of it!” She winced in pain at the volume of her argument as the adrenaline wore off.

Phoenix suddenly had the same problem as he was slapped by the worst headache in human history.

He walked over to the mirror with his hand on his head and groaned. He had been so focused on the writing on his head, he hadn’t noticed how bad of a state he was in.

His hair was a tangled mess of curls and knots, his tie was being used to hold the hairs out of his face. and his dress shirt was half unbuttoned and untucked from his pants, which had one leg rolled up his thigh.

The memory of last night flashed through Phoenix’s head. He and Maya were celebrating a recent victory in a case and decided (against phoenix’s better judgment) to have a party at the office. The attendees consisted of Larry, Detective Gumshoe… actually that was pretty much it. Edgeworth had been invited but he was busy sorting through all the paperwork his predecessor had left him.

He pictured Edgeworth sitting at his desk with his glasses on, sifting through pages with his slender pale fingers, running up and down the edges of the paper, licking them to-

Phoenix managed (with great difficulty) to stop his mind from wandering. He groaned and leaned his head against the mirror.

“Come on Nick, relax! It’s not like we’re gonna get a case today!”

They both instinctively looked at the office phone, as if they were expecting it to ring.

“Huh,” Phoenix sighed, “I guess no-“

RING RING RING

Phoenix’s head dropped as he waddled over to the phone, picking it up and mumbling

“Hello, Wright & co law office, how can I help you?” Slurring every second word.

“Wright? Are you quite alright?” A familiar voice asked

“Edgeworth!” His face lit up as the voice registered in his head, “Yeah I’m fine, just a bit hungover.” Phoenix heard something resembling a laugh from the other man.

“Last nights party I presume?”

“Yeah….” He admitted sounding guilty. “So why’d you call?”

“Hm? Oh yes, I need your assistance on a case I’m working on, would you be able to come to my office today? Or are the consequences of your decisions more severe than you expected?” Miles asked, no he teased .

“I’m never too hungover to talk to you Edgeworth” he replied, grinning. Phoenix could almost hear the chief prosecutor blushing through the phone.

“A-ah. I see. 11 am?” Edgeworth stuttered.

“Sounds good to me, I’ll be there” the grin on Phoenix’s face was now big enough for Maya to notice.

Are you and your boyfriend planning a date?” She mouthed to the attorney, wearing a grin almost as big as Phoenix’s.

“Oh, Wright I forgot to mention,” Edgeworth added “Franziska will be in attendance.”

Phoenix’s face fell almost instantly.

“Oh.”

“Do not worry, I have instructed her not to use the whip.”

Yeah I bet that’ll stop her ” he thought to himself.

“O-okay… hey do you mind if I bring Maya? I can’t exactly leave her in my apartment or she’d probably clear out my fridge.” Maya gave a look of mock surprise and covered her mouth with her hand.

“The very idea!” She exclaimed.

“Yes that should be fine, Franziska will want to catch up with her anyway I presume.”

“Oh? And why’s that?” Phoenix inquired.

“She was talking about her yesterday, saying something about some sort of secret plan between the two of them, she refused to elaborate.” Edgeworth explained

“Huh, weird” he said, “anyway, I’ll be over soon, see you then!”

“Goodbye Wright” Edgeworth said, sounding softer than usual, maybe it was just Phoenix’s imagination.

“So what’s going on?” Maya questioned,

“Well” replied Phoenix, “We’re going to the Prosecutor’s office, Edgeworth needs some help with a case, and Franziska seems to want to have a secret meeting with you.” Maya giggled, Phoenix had no clue why. “Come on get ready, we’ve gotta be there in an hour.” he told Maya, stepping into the bathroom and locking the door.

Maya waited for the sound of the shower turning on before pulling out her phone and messaging Franziska,

Maya: you could’ve at least been a little more conspicuous about it Franny

Fransiska: I do not see why that is necessary , my brother is a fool and will be unable to deduce our plot.

Maya: youre so cute when you use words I don’t understand

Franziska: I don’t believe myself to have used any particularly complex words?

Maya: i know i just wanted an excuse to call you cute ;)

Franziska: Danke schön meine geliebte

Maya pressed her phone against her chest, she had made a vow with Franziska a year ago to help their fools of brothers (Maya did always think of Nick as an older brother) to realise that they were head over heels for each other, which was proving to be quite difficult, seeing as the two of them were, as Franziska described “Foolish fools who are oblivious to their own foolishness.” She did have a way with words.

“MAYA!” Phoenix yelled. “THIS MARKER ISN’T COMING OFF!”

She giggled to herself and lay back on the couch.

Today was going to be fun.

Notes:

Hey! Thanks for reading, this is my first fic so make sure to tell me what I did wrong.

(And yes the title is based of ‘Read my mind’ by the killers. It’s peak music, I don’t care if it’s for divorced dads)

I’ll try and post a new chapter every few days. Dont hold me to my word though, there is a high chance I am just lying.

Anyway thanks again for reading! :3

Chapter 2

“Miles Edgeworth, you are a coward and a fool.”

“Good morning to you too Franziska.” Miles responded, as Franziska let his office doors (which she had dramatically burst through only moments ago) swing shut behind her.

He had been working this case all night and fell asleep in his office. At his desk. Still holding the file.

Maybe wright had been correct about me being a "massive nerd". He thought to himself, unable to contain the smile that grew across his face thinking about the man.

"You are thinking about that foolish Attorney again, aren't you?" Franziska asked.

"My thoughts are private Franziska. I've already dealt with a magic rock that can reveal my deepest secrets, I'd prefer to keep some things to myself."

"I do not need to be a pshycic to know that you are thinking about that fool. Your foolish grin provides enough." She retorted, "And besides, if you think about him so much then why not simply tell him about your... feelings?" She spat out the word as if it was something toxic.

Miles paused for a moment. He'd gone over the scenario of telling Wright about his feelings in his head more times than he could count, and they all tended to end badly, or horribly, or with him leaving another note behind on his desk...

"My current friendship with Wright is ammicable. I would not simply trade it for a foolish fantasy." He responded finally, his voice slow and unwavering, "and besides, I highly doubt that he would resiprocate my feelings anyway." he ended, his voice growing softer and more pained.

Fanziska looked as if she was about to respond, but a loud BUZZ rang out througth the office.

"Uh hello? Mr Edgeworth? You have two guests" His secretary katie's voice rang out from his phone.

"Send them though, thank you."

As he finished his eyes rested on the whip currently located on Franziska's belt.

"I thought I told you to leave that at the hotel?"

She smiled, "And thought I told you to confess your feelings?"

"Touché" he grumbled in response.

"Can you two please stop speaking German while we're here? I only know a few words."

Miles turned to see Phoenix Wright standing at his door with a grin on his face.

"Wright! It's good to see you." He said smiling.

"Touché is French you fool. Make another error like that and will have to break my agreement with my younger brother." Franziska said sharply, gesturing to the whip on her waist.

Wright's face fell as he saw the whip, clearly remembering all the times it had been used on him in the courtroom.

"Franziska, as I've told you before, I'm 7 years older than you."

She smiled at Miles, "Older? Yes. Less foolish? N-" She was left unable to finish her sentance, as she had just been tackled to the ground by Maya Fey who wraped her up in a hug

"FRANNY! I'VE MISSED YOU SO MUCH" she yelled, crying.

"Hello Meine Geliebte." She said, smiling softly before kissing her on the forehead. "I've missed you too."

"Well that's new." Wright exclaimed, his jaw hanging open.

"Do you have a problem with me and Maya Fey's relationship Mr Pheonix Wright?" Franziska asked, sharply, reaching for her waist.

"NO! No! No problem!" He stammered, holding his hands up.

"Yeah don't be homophobic Nick!" Maya added teasingly.

"I'm not homophobic! I'm literally Bi!" He almost shouted. Calming down, he continued, "No, I don't see anything wrong with your relationship, I was just a little... surprised, you know?"

"Your answer is acceptable." Franziska stated, "You have evaded a whipping... for now..."

Wright shuddered, before sitting down in the chair across from Miles.

"Hey I saw that the stairs were blocked off and that you needed to take the elevator up to here, are you doing ok?" He asked, his voice soft and caring.

Miles was taken aback by his tone for a moment before responding, "I've been... It's fine. I just get a little... tense."

"What about the nightmares?" he continued, "I know they usually get worse around December..."

"They are far and few between, but still present..." Miles murmured.

Wright extended his hand, placing it on top of his, the warmth radiating through his body upon contact. "I'm here for you if you need anything ok?" Miles blushed, before returning an affermative nod.

He noticed Franziska and Maya sharing a mischevious glance, before clearing his throat.

"Franziska? Why don't you go talk to Miss Fey about your 'secret plan' while I tell Wright about this case?" He suggested.

"I think that is an excellent idea younger brother. I will be back in an hour or so." She said smiling, "Versuche nicht zu scheißen, wenn wir zurückkommen" she added with a wink, and Miles simultaniously thanked every god that Wright couldn't speak German.

After Franziska and Maya left, Miles turned to Wright saying. "Now, let me tell you about this case…”

Notes:

Chapter 2 is done! I might be able to finish one or two more chapters, but I may have to take a 2 week break because of my exams coming up. Thanks for reading! :3

Chapter 3

“The victim of this case was a DJ at the Southside Discotheque, Dennis Jeffords.” Edgeworth explained. “He was found dead in his dressing room at 23:00 from a bottle of whiskey being smashed across the back of his head, then stabbed into his heart.”

Phoenix winced, no matter how many times he’d been to a crime scene, the description of the murder always made his stomach lurch.

“So who’s the suspect?” He pondered.

“The club’s Bartender, Mr Bart Ender.” Phoenix let out a snort at the name. Edgeworth continued, “Yes it was quite the suitable profession for him, he was in a relationship with the victim, but had supposedly made a lot of powerful enemies.”

“So what’s the theory?”

“Well a note was found in the victim’s room, detailing a breakup between the two. We’re currently working on the idea that the defendant went to the victim’s room and found out about the note. He got so angry that he killed him.” Phoenix looked thoughtfully at the evidence list.

“Who’s this witness, Jack Kuzan?”

“He’s the owner of the club. He says he saw the defendant leave to the back where the victims room was, carrying the bottle of whiskey.” Edgeworth replied, “Although he does seem rather… untrustworthy…”

“Oh really, what makes you think that?” Phoenix asked.

“Well he’s been known to associate with prominent gang affiliated individuals and invites them to his club often. The police department have been investigating him for years and found nothing on him.” Edgeworth responded grimly

“What about security cameras? Is there any footage from them?” Phoenix wondered.

“There were some in the front were the bar is, but none in the back, and before you ask, we’ve already reviewed the footage, and it shows that the defendant leaving at the same time the witness stated with the bottle of whiskey.”

“What about coming back?”

“That is where this gets difficult, the club experienced a power loss at 23:15 the lights, the cameras, everything, so the moment the defendant returns is not captured, so we can’t say for sure whether or not he brought the whiskey back with him.”

Phoenix frowned, “So why this case? On the surface it seems pretty cut and dry, probably enough to get a guilty verdict, so why do you need my help to prove he’s innocent?”

Edgeworth looked embarrassed before saying, “Do you remember when you lent me Miss Fey’s ‘Magatama’?”

“Oh yeah! I’ve been meaning to ask for that back! Wait a minute…” Phoenix suddenly realised what Edgeworth was trying to say. “You talked to the witness and he was lying about his testimony wasn’t he?”

Edgeworth nodded “5 locks” he sighed, running a hand through his hair as Phoenix probably stared longer than he should’ve. He cleared his throat and suddenly realised something.

“Edgeworth do you have anything we can watch the CCTV footage on?” He asked.

“Yes, I can show it to you on my computer” Edgeworth answered, typing rapidly on his keyboard and turning his monitor to face Phoenix.

“Here is the footage before the power cut:” the video showed a man in a blue and gold suit (the defendant) take a bottle of whiskey from behind the counter and leave to the back room.

Ok not looking good so far he thought to himself as the video played further on, showing a man in a pink suit and silk gloves who’d been sitting at the bar for a while now, (the witness) on his stool with a bag sitting next to him, before the video ended.

“That’s when the power cut happened, here is the footage from after:” the video showed the defendant back behind the bar and serving drinks like normal and eventually showing the witness leaving with his bag. There had to be something wrong here! He thought, until he realised something.

“Edgeworth, switch it back to the end of the other video for a second ok?” Edgeworth looked puzzled but did as Phoenix asked, the screen returning to the end of the prior footage. He’d figured it out!

“ZVARRI!” Phoenix exclaimed loudly, almost sending Edgeworth tumbling back in his chair.

“What is it?” Edgeworth questioned.

Phoenix smiled, “The key to the whole case! Take a look at the cabinet behind the bar for me. There seems to be 4 bottles of the whiskey in there correct?”

“Yes? Where are you going with this Wright?”

“Take a look at the footage after the defendant comes back, pay close attention to the cabinet.”

“Well, hold on a moment. There’s still 4 bottles but… they’re all full? But how?”

“I think it’s rather obvious, there were 4 before the bartender came back, but when the power went out, it would’ve been easy to slip behind the bar and steal one of the bottles!” Phoenix triumphantly exclaimed.

“Wright have you lost all common sense? If the there were 4 bottles and someone stole one then there would be three in the cabinet.” Edgeworth stated, shaking his head.

“Ah yes, but if say, a bottle that was previously taken was returned, it would not only fill that slot, but also explain half a bottle magically appearing. The defendant returned with his bottle and placed it back in the cabinet!” Phoenix shouted, slamming his fist against the desk.

“B-but then where did the other bottle go?” He questioned.

“The only place it could’ve gone, the only person who could’ve stolen the bottle was the only person at the bar… JACK KUZAN! His gloves would’ve left no fingerprints on the bottle, and he could easily hide it in his bag before the cameras turned back on!”

“Phoenix Wright you brilliant son of a bitch!” Edgeworth exclaimed, making him blush more than he’d care to admit.

“And as for motive, you said he had powerful enemies? Why don’t you compare that list to the list of Mr Kuzan’s associates, I guarantee there will be at least one match!” Phoenix leaned back in his chair, satisfied with his work, still blushing from Edgeworth’s Comment.

“This is why I asked for your help! You are the most talented lawyer I have ever met Phoenix, Thank you.” Edgeworth said, smiling.

Phoenix blushed profusely at the compliment and the use of his first name ! He quickly pulled himself together, replying “Don’t mention it Miles” shooting a cocky grin in his direction.

“Now, let’s get some lunch!”

Chapter Text

“Meine Geliebte, your friend is a fool.” Franziska stated. She was in a cafe sitting across from Maya with a smile on her face.

A frown grew on Maya’s face “Nick’s more than just my friend Franny, he’s like a brother to me!”

“Well, I suppose both our brothers are fools.” She huffed.

“You’re telling me! I had to deal with him going on and on about how ‘Edgeworth was so amazing in court today! Gosh he’s so cool! He’s incredible! I really want him to fu-“

“Maya!” Franziska hissed. Maya threw her hands up in the air in an apology.

“I’m not wrong though!” She argued, “Nick is head over heels for him!”

“That is true. My brother is also madly in love with that fool.”

“So!” Maya announced, slamming her hands on the table, “What’s the plan for helping them realise it?”

“Well it is obvious that they won’t be able to figure it out themselves, so I suggest we lock them in a room with that magical lie detection stone, the- what is the word again?” She asked

“The magatama?”

“Yes that one. If they are stuck together with it then they will get bored and use it, discovering the truth.” Franziska proclaimed.

Maya facepalmed. “Franny you’re supposed to be the smart one here, don’t You think I haven’t tried that before?” She sighed, “They just find a way out! Nick’s like a professional escape artist when he’s threatened with facing his feelings.”

“My brother is rather similar…” Franziska paused, looking out the window. Miles and Wright were walking down the other side of the street.

“What are you looking at?” Maya questioned, before turning around and seeing the two men. They were walking far to close together than was natural for a pavement that wide, and smiling and laughing at each other. Franziska had never seen Miles look as happy as he did with Phoenix. That was the main reason she had agreed to this… challenge with Maya. She wanted her Brother to be happy. It was the least she could do.

“Let’s follow them!” Maya said, snapping Franziska back to reality.

“Maya we can’t just walk after them, they’d notice.” Franziska sighed.

“Then we’ll be sneaky!” She countered.

“So you are suggesting we stalk them?” Franziska asked bluntly. Maya pondered for a moment.

“Yes.” She announced.

“Works for me.” Franziska shrugged, finishing her tea and placing a $20 bill on the table before getting to her feet. She offered her hand to Maya, pulling her to her feet and subsequently being dragged out the door by her at breakneck speed.

“You do know that we don’t have to hide in a bush?” Franziska informed Maya. She shushed her.

“They’ll hear us!” She whispered. Franziska still wasn’t quite sure how she’d ended up hiding behind a bush next to a cafe where her brother and that foolish attorney he was in love with were having a “completely platonic lunch that totally wasn’t a date”.

“Maya you can come out of the bush now! I can see your robe sticking out.” Maya froze.

“No You can’t!” She spluttered out. Franziska placed a hand on her shoulder, and patted it.

“Perhaps you are just not cut out for being a spy.” She said softly, before pulling her to her feet and stepping out of the bush walking over to the table where Wright and Miles were sitting with grins on their faces.

“So is there a reason you were trying to stalk us?” Wright asked.

“Not one that you are allowed to know about fool.” Franziska snapped.

“Franziska you should probably take the leafs out of your hair before insulting people.” Miles said in a flat tone causing Wright to choke on his coffee. “Anyway, would you like to sit down with us instead of lurking in the bushes like stalkers?”

“Yes, that would be very nice.” Franziska mumbled.

“Are you sure you don’t mind us interrupting your date?” Maya asked smiling. This time it was Miles to choke on his drink.

“T-this isn’t a date!” Wright stammered out, the shade of his face now looking akin to Miles’ suit. “We’re just having lunch together!”

“Indubitably! We are simply celebrating a breakthrough in a case!” Miles added.

“Wait did you just unironically say indubitably?” Wright chucked.

“It is a perfectly reasonable word to use in this context!” Miles complained. Wright smiled at him and let out a laugh, causing Miles to blush even harder than he had been before.

“So!” Maya suddenly announced smiling, “does this place do burgers?”

Chapter 6: Never offer to pay for Maya Fey’s burgers

Summary:

Maya and Franziska join the purely platonic lunch and visit the mall while Phoenix reminisces on his past with Miles. (I can’t think of a joke for this one)

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Phoenix was a little disappointed. He’d been excited about going out for lunch with Edgeworth. The two hadn’t seen each other in weeks and he wanted to try and catch up with his personal life, as he was in a really good mood after the case. At least until Maya and Franziska tried to commit a felony and failed miserably, interrupting the meal.

“Mmmmm the burgers here are good!” Maya said through bites.

“Wait how many did you get!?” Phoenix questioned.

“About…. 10?” Maya shamelessly replied. Phoenix’s mouth fell open.

“Maya they cost $20 each!” Phoenix managed to stammer out through his bewilderment.

“Relax Wright, I’ll get the bill,” Edgeworth said calmly, “It’s my treat.” He smiled at Phoenix. He blushed before spluttering out a “T-thanks.”

“So what are you and Franny doing while she’s visiting?” Maya asked, sparing Phoenix from more embarrassment.

“We are planning to visit the museum district tomorrow, and Franziska will also be covering one of my trials this afternoon.” Edgeworth replied.

“Oooh that sounds fun!” She said smiling, “maybe I could be her assistant for the day!”

“That sounds like a wonderful idea Maya!” Franziska agreed, doing something that Phoenix thought she was physically unable to do, smiling.

“The trial starts in a few hours,” Edgeworth added, “unfortunately I will be unable to attend, as I have far too many cases to review.”

“Oh Nick could help you with that!” Maya suggested.

“Are you sure you would be ok with that Wright? Don’t you have any plans?”

“Yeah! I’ve not got anything better to do!” Phoenix added. “I don’t think we’ve had a proper case in about a month.”

“Well I’m sure that the two of you will have a gay old time in the office together!” Maya smiling said as Phoenix spat out his drink for a second drink.

“I-I’m sure we will.” Edgeworth replied startled by Phoenix’s outburst. “Anyway, we’ll all need to head back to the office anyway, so Franziska can pick up the files for the trial.”

“Well we’ve still got a while before it starts, so why don’t we go around the mall?” Maya suggested.

“Sure!” Phoenix agreed.

“I could take a break in my cases to join the three of you.” Edgeworth stated.

“That sounds like a fantastic idea Maya!” Franziska added.

“Let’s get going then!” Maya announced, rising from her chair.

“Wait you already finished all your burgers!?!” Phoenix questioned. Maya stuck her tongue out, shrugging. Phoenix shook his head, looking over at Edgeworth and rising from his seat, before pulling him to his feet and if he held his hand for a little too long, then nobody had to know.

Phoenix was trying his absolute hardest not to stare at Edgeworth, but it was not easy. They were walking through the mall together while Maya and Franziska went into all the shops ahead of them. It was the first time they’d been here together since they were kids.

It was about that time that Phoenix first realised that he was in love with him. They’d been looking at movies in the mall’s blockbuster trying to find a movie to watch a sleepover they’d planned.

“What about this one Miles?” Phoenix had asked, pulling his friend away from the steel samurai  collection he was sorting through.

“‘Love actually’?” Miles asked. “What is it about?”

“It’s a Christmas movie!” Phoenix responded.

“And you want us to watch it together?” He inquired.

“Well yeah why not?”

“Well…” he started, “Actually, forget about it.”

“We’re getting it!” Phoenix declared.

“Father?” Miles shouted. The man came around the corner of the aisle with his glasses neatly tucked into his suit pocket.

“Did you two decide on a movie?” Gregory asked. Phoenix nodded, handing him the box.

“Ah ‘Love Actually’, good choice.” He smiled. “Well let’s hurry and get it now, if we don’t then you will not have enough time to get any snacks.”

“No!” The two yelled. They grabbed the box and ran up to the counter as Gregory strode behind them, laughing.

Phoenix and Miles were sitting on the couch next to each other as the credits rolled. Gregory had gone to bed for the night telling the boys to go to sleep after the movie was done.

“That was a good movie.” Phoenix said. “I liked Hugh Grant in it, He’s funny.”

“Yes, quite.” Miles responded nodding. Phoenix cleared his throat, before asking Miles,

“S-so do you think you’d ever fall in love with a girl?” He mumbled. Miles thought for a moment before saying,

“Why would I need a Girlfriend when I have you?” He responded, “You’re my friend and a like you a lot.” He smiled. Phoenix flushed a shade of crimson that might have been the inspiration for Miles’ suit for the future.

“T-thanks Miles! I like you too.” He spluttered out. “We should probably get to sleep now.”

“Yes, that seems like a good idea.” Miles said.

They both got up and went into Miles’ room where an air mattress was laid on the floor with a blanket laid on top of it, and Miles’ bed layers with 2 duvets and more blankets than Phoenix could count. Probably 4.

“Hey, so do you think I could sleep in your bed with you? You’ve just got a bunch of blankets and it’d be warmer.” Phoenix asked. Miles paused.

“Well that would make the most sense.” Miles reasoned. They both clambered into bed together and cuddled up together. Phoenix felt happy there. Safe and warm in Miles’ arms. He’d never forgotten that feeling.

“Nick look at this!” Maya yelled, snapping him back to reality and shoving a blue porcupine plush in his face, “It’s you!” Edgeworth let out a laugh and smiled at Phoenix.

“Do not think you are safe little brother.” Said Franziska, presenting a red beady eyed hawk plush, causing Phoenix to let out a similar reaction.

“Ok I need to buy that one!” He proclaimed.

“Then I shall purchase the blue one!” Edgeworth retorted.

“Fine!”

“Okay!”

“You two argue like an old married couple.” Maya huffed.

“Well we have known each other for about like 2 decades now.” Phoenix replied. “All friends are bound to act that way eventually.”

“Sureeee…” Maya said questioningly.

“Anyway, we have to get back to the office soon.” Edgeworth stated, checking his watch. “Let’s finish up and go.”

“Yes sir!” Maya announced, saluting.

Notes:

This is the longest chapter yet I think.

“Mr Edgeworth you really need a new car.” Maya complained. She was currently stuffed in the back of Miles’s car pressed up against Franziska. “This one’s way too small.”

“Believe it or not Miss Fey, but I tend not to use my car as a chauffeur service for teenage girls.” Miles calmly responded, “This space is suitable for all of my needs.”

She huffed. “That is blatant homophobia. Babe tell your brother he’s being homophobic.”

“You are being homophonic.” Franziska said flatly, staring daggers into the back of Miles’s skull.

“Yes, the only reason I have this car is to specifically make any lesbians who need to sit in the back uncomfortable.” Miles rolled his eyes.

“I knew it.” Maya whispered to Franziska.

“The traffic is quite bad, we’ll be later back to the prosecutor’s office than I thought.” Miles groaned. He closed his eyes and pressed his head against the wheel.

Classical music played through the radio. It was somewhat familiar to Miles. Then he remembered where it was from. He was suddenly back in the trauma. Back in the manor…

Miles sat in his room while classical music played on the record player, echoing through the halls of the Von Karma manor. He was at his desk, reading a case that Manfred had left for him.

“What are you reading Brother?” Came a voice from behind him. He turned to see Franziska holding a plush bear wielding a toy whip in its hand.

“Ah, hello Fran.” Miles smiled, “I’m just reading through a case that your Father left for me to study.”

“How did he win?” She asked him

“How are you so sure that he won?” Miles smirked.

“Because Papa is perfect!” She huffed.

“Right as always Franziska.” A loud voice boomed from the door. Miles turned to see Manfred Von Karma standing in the doorway.

“Papa!” Franziska smiled.

“Manfred.” Miles spat out.

“I’ve told you before Edgeworth , it’s Sir.” Manfred hissed, spitting out his name with venom. “Now how is your review of the case going?”

“It is going well, but I seem to have found a flaw here.” Miles said.

“Oh?”

“Yes, look here, the defence here asked for you to prove that the defendant was at the scene of the crime and you used a hearsay argument.” Miles explained, “the argument worked because the defence didn’t notice it, but it was still a mista-“

A palm struck across his face, knocking him to the ground.

“I DO NOT MAKE MISTAKES CHILD!” He spat at Miles. Franziska was frozen in fear looking at the scene. Miles raised his hand to his face, rubbing the red mark made by the slap.

“YOU NEED TO LEARN THAT I AM PERFECT IF YOU ARE TO BE MY PROTEGE!” He yelled.

“I-I’m sorry sir…” Miles whispered.

“DO NOT BE SORRY CHILD, BE BETTER!” He shouted, storming out of the room.

Franziska walked over to him with tears in her eyes, “Brother? Brother? Miles!…”

“Miles!” She shouted, “The light is green.”

Miles was snapped back into reality suddenly, “S-sorry.” He mumbled.

“Miles are you ok?” Wright asked him, his voice full of concern.

“Y-yes, just some bad memories.” He muttered before comprehending what had just been said. Wright had called him Miles. His first name. His face turned a crimson that even his car would be jealous of.

“Thank you for asking Phoenix.” He smiled.

He turned back towards the wheel, and began driving through the city, seeing Wright, no, Phoenix, blushing in his peripherals.

The car pulled into the Prosecutor’s Office car park, as Miles exited through the door, then put the front seats down to let Franziska and Maya get out.

“I’ve gotta say Edgeworth, this car park brings back some memories.” Phoenix gazed around the concrete building.

“If they are bad for you, think about how bad they are for me!” Miles responded, “I’d just been on trial for murder, then I come back to my car 2 days later, and there’s a dead body in the trunk!”

“So a slow week for you?”

Miles laughed, “I know you’re joking, but I have had much busier weeks recently.”

“I don’t doubt that, let me guess, 4 murders and an international conspiracy?”

“Actually it was 5.”

A whip cracked across Miles. “Miles! You cannot just reveal Interpol secrets to somebody just because they are your boyfriend.”

“Does Miss Fey know about your Interpol operations?”

“That is irrelevant.” She snapped, “Also me and her are actually dating, instead of… whatever you’ve got going on.” She made a disgusted face.

Miles cleared his throat, blushing slightly. “We should probably go and get the files now. Do you and Miss Fey want to stay down here?”

“No, I have matters to attend to with some prosecutors.”

“And I’m going to talk to Gumshoe about a bet.” Maya chimed in.

“A bet?” Phoenix asked, “What kind of bet?”

“It was about something stupid from a case we did, but he owes me a burger, and I plan to collect it!”

“Please don’t, you’ll bankrupt the man.” He sighed.

“We’ll meet you back here in about 20 minutes okay?” Maya said.

Miles and Phoenix both gave a thumbs up, and walked up the stairs to the offices above them.

Miles stood there, just staring at it. He could do it. He was fine. It was an irrational fear to have. He could do this.

“I can’t do this.” He sighed.

He was standing in front of the elevator with Phoenix. Sure he’d had to use it to get up to his office for a week now, but never with people there. Never with Phoenix there.

“Why are the stairs even out of order?”

“There was an earthquake that knocked down an unstable section of the stairs and they are repairing them.”

“Oh. So directly after an Earthquake you had to…”

“Use an elevator for the first time in Years? Yes. I did not react well.”

“I’m sure it wasn’t that bad.”

“You weren’t there.”

Miles felt a warm, soft hand on his shoulder. “It’ll be ok Miles. I’m here for you.”

He smiled and turned back towards the elevator. “I can do this.”

“Yeah! You’ve got this. What’s the worst that could happen?” Phoenix said, as they stepped into the Elevator.

Then the worst that could happen, happened.

Chapter 7

The ground shook beneath them.

Shit.

Phoenix looked over at Miles.

Shit.

He was terrified.

“Oh God, Miles.” He rushed over to him and wrapping his arms around him. He felt the tears soak into his blue suit’s shoulder. He held Miles close.

“It’s ok, we’re going to be ok.” He whispered into Miles’ ear. The lights flickered, and the shaking stopped. The two of them stood in shock for a moment.

“Shit…” Miles whispered to himself.

“Hey, it’s ok, the generator will come on soon, and we’ll be out of here in no time!”

Miles shook his head, “The building is old, the generator is shoddy at best. It’ll be a few hours before we get out.” He began pacing up and down the room. “By then we’ll be running out of air, we’ll pass out, we could di-.”

Phoenix grabbed onto Miles’ hand. He pressed the Glowing Magatama into his palm.

“We’re going to be ok.” He repeated, looking up at Miles. “Are there any locks?”

He shook his head.

“Then you know I’m telling the truth.” He felt Miles’ grip loosen before joining him on the floor.

“T-thank you Phoenix…” he choked out.

“Don’t mention it Mil-” A finger pressed against his lips. He blushed looking over at Miles.

“I will mention it Phoenix.” He clasped his hand around Phoenix’s, “I’ll keep mentioning it over and over again, because you saved me. You rescued me from the darkness part of my Life. You made me a better man. I can never thank you enough. I will always be grateful for your friendship.”

Chains fell around Miles as the room grew dark and a black lock appeared over his heart. Phoenix froze.

“M-Miles? Are you sure?”

Miles looked confused, before gazing down at his hand and noticing the magatama glowing green.

“oh…”

“It’s black Miles. Black.” He whispered.

“What does that mean?” Miles quietly asked.

“It means you’re lying to yourself.”

Miles took a deep breath in. “I hadn’t planned for this to happen here, of all places. Hell I didn’t plan for it to happen at all…” He turned to face Phoenix. “I am… not satisfied with what we are now. The truth is… I care for you more than I have cared for anyone I have ever met. You were the one thing that kept me going through the dark times. I… I love you Phoenix Wright. I have loved you for years.”

The lock shattered, as the chains fell away and the world faded back out of the darkness.

“I understand if you do not feel the same way, and if you wish to distance yourself from me, then g-”

Phoenix never found out what Miles was going to say. He was too busy pressing his lips against Miles’. His arms wrapped around the prosecutor’s body, as the two collided.

Phoenix felt the warmth of Miles’ lips against his own, and never wanted it to. But he had to. As he pulled away from Miles, he stroked Miles’ face.

“I love you too. I always have.” He pulled Miles closer and kissed him. Their lips crashed against each other like an oceans waves as the kiss deepened.

Suddenly, the elevator doors creaked, as they opened. Maya and Franziska stood at the entrance.

“Are we interrupting anything?” Maya said with a smirk.

“Yes!” Phoenix and Miles yelled.

“Sorry! Sorry!” She said, putting her hands in the air.

“Come now Geliebte let us leave the love birds to their business. Although I am sure that you would rather do this in a better place than an elevator no?”

The two grumbled, getting out of the elevator together and held hands.

“We really were fools all these years weren’t we?” Miles said softly

“IHR DUMMKOPF, ICH VERLETZE EUCH JETZT DEN ARSCH!“ taking the whip off of her belt.

“Yeah you two should probably run now.” Maya added quietly.

Phoenix extended his hand to Miles, pulling him down the corridor laughing all the way.
