Work Text:

The rain pounded down on the roof, the trees swayed in the wind, the person behind her pulled her even closer.

Beth Greene, daughter of Hershel and Annette, sister to Maggie and Shawn Greene and finally the girlfriend to Daryl Dixon. Neither of them liked that word, ‘girlfriend’. It just seemed so odd; she wasn’t his girlfriend she was his girl. They both loved those words, ‘his girl’.

‘his’

The second he saw her he knew she was his. Just as he was hers. They had been dating for almost a year, a year on the 7th of January to be exact. They met on New Year's Day of last year at the Greene farm where a party was being held. Everyone was invited. Which included the farm hand Otis and his wife Patricia, old family friends like Carol and T-Dog, Maggie’s new boyfriend whose name is Glenn and finally, Mr. Grimes, his wife Michone and their children who Beth occasionally babysits. Mr. Grimes had a friend who didn't have any plans for new year's so he invited him to the farm. “The more the merrier!” was Annette Greene's response, even though that meant she would need to cook even more. As well as this friend, his brother was also coming with his girlfriend who just so happens to be Amy’s (Beth’s high school friend) older sister. She remembers being told the mans’ names, Daryl and Merle. Their names sounded related, and manly in a rough biker type of way.

As everyone arrived Beth noticed that the Dixons had yet to make an appearance. They had the time and location, so Rick was not concerned in any way telling Beth that they like to do what they want when they want. Beth liked that; dangerous, mysterious, it made her curious. She was less curious however when the man known as Merle entered loudly with his arm slung around his girlfriend Andrea, who looked happy to be there. While Merle made his presence known, a dark, quiet person stood behind them observing the party.

Daryl.

Daryl was the opposite to Beth. He was dark, while she was bright. He would make you cry, while she would hold you.

Beth didn't even know how it happened. One minute her older sister is laughing at her for staring at the man and the next he is laughing at her joke. Before the night ended, she gave him her number and a chase kiss on the cheek. He could have gotten it off Rick, but she just wanted to be the one to give it to him. The next day they got breakfast, the day after lunch, two nights of dinner at restaurants, the night after that Daryl cooked for her and the morning after that he asked her very simple yet the most important words he will possibly ever ask.

“D’ya wanna, y’know, be my girl?”

“Yeah, I do.”
