Chapter 1: Meetings

Summary:

Hiccup and his family go to a new island unaware of how much it'll effect their family and future

Chapter Text

Berk has spent 10 years without the dragons, yes, they’ve seen them over the years including Snogletog but the dragons never came to stay. Zephyr and Nuffink were getting older, so they started going on trips with their parents instead of staying on New Berk with their grandmother. The four of them were sailing to an island not far from New Berk, they were invited and gladly accepted.

“Dad how much longer?” Nuffink complains looking out from the ship.

“Not long, Nuff.” Hiccup responds.

“I can’t wait to see this new island.” Zephyr says to her mother.

“I know, Zeph.” Astrid chuckles, looking out to the island they were nearing.

“I wonder what this island is like.” Nuffink mumbles, turning to his father.

“The chief seems like a kind person from what I’ve heard.” Hiccup explains.

“What are we going to do while you and mom are in the meeting?” Zephyr asks.

“I’m not sure.” Hiccup answers.

“Maybe someone can show us around the island.” Nuffink suggests.

“Maybe.” Astrid responds.

“How long are we going to stay?” Zephyr asks her parents.

“Depends on how this meeting goes.” Hiccup answers, this was one of the islands they’ve never been to before.

It wasn’t far from New Berk but without dragons traveling was much harder taking much more time than before. After making alliances with other islands Hiccup thought it’d be best to make more. Huttsgalor and its people have been talked up to Hiccup multiple times after talking with Astrid and the other dragon riders; he thought it best to meet with the chief.

“What is the chief's name?” Nuffink asks.

“Dad told us already.” Zephyr replies to her brother's question.

“I wasn’t listening.” Nuffink replies, turning back to his father.

“His name is Duggard the Decisive.” Hiccup answers.

“Oh yeah.” Nuffink sighs, “So how much longer now?”

“We should be docking soon.” Astrid answers.

“Yes!” Nuffink yells in excitement, getting a laugh out of both of his parents.

The family starts nearing the island being able to see more of the details, there was a small town in the middle of the island mountains around it. There were four sea stacks, three of them were being used as a bridge and the last one had a big building on top.

They dock on the island, Duggard was waiting on the docks for them with a blonde woman next to him. “Hello,” Duggard greets, “Welcome to Huttsgalor.”

“Hello.” Hiccup responds, Duggard looks past the man to the two children behind him.

“And who are these two?” Duggard asks.

Hiccup draws out both of his kids from behind him, allowing the older man to be able to see them. “This is Zephyr and Nuffink, they are my children.

“Hello, Zephyr and Nuffink,” Duggard greets, “I’m Duggard.”

“Hi.” Nuffink replies, “So I was wondering if someone could show us around the island.”

“Nuff!” Astrid scolds.

“It's fine.” Duggard laughs, “I can have Dak and Leyla show them around.”

“Who’s Dak and Leyla?” Astrid asks the man.

“Two twins, they live on the island, don’t worry, they are extremely kind and won’t let anything happen to your children.” Duggard explains.

“Okay, where can we find them?” Hiccup asks.

“The lighthouse.” Duggard responds, pointing at the building on the island.

“Can we go?” Zephyr asks, turning to her parents.

“Yeah.” Astrid answers, “Don’t cause any trouble.”

“We won’t.” Nuffink yells, following his sister off the docks towards the lighthouse on the hill.

Dak and Leyla were in the training yard, the dragons had gone fishing leaving the twins alone. Duggard told the two of them that he had a meeting today so they thought it would be best for them to stay at the roost.

“Who do you think Duggard is meeting with?” Dak asks his twin, while practicing throwing knives.

“I don’t know,” Leyla responds, “He wouldn’t tell me when I asked.”

“It’s probably something important.” Dak replies, “If Duggard is keeping it a secret.”

“Yeah, Duggard can’t keep a secret for the life of him.” Leyla chuckles.

“At least from us.” Dak laughs, the two of them stop talking when they hear voices approaching the roost. Zephyr and Nuffink were staring at the two who stopped talking, looking back at them. “Hi.”

“Hello, Duggard sent us up here.” Zephyr explains.

“Do you know why?” Leyla asks.

“He said you two might be able to show us around.” Zephyr explains.

“Oh yeah sure.” Dak responds, “Just let us clean up really quick.”

“Okay,” Zephyr responds to the twins.

Dak and Leyla clean up the training area with the two Berkians watching them, after a few minutes they start down the hill into the town.

“So is Duggard meeting you two’s parents?” Leyla asks the kids.

“Yeah.” Nuffink responds.

“Do you know what the meeting is about?” Dak asks.

“No, dad doesn’t tell us what happens.” Zephyr explains.

“Aw man,” Dak mutters, “We’re going to have to get it out of Duggard.”

“How long are you two staying?” Leyla asks.

“We don’t know that either.” Nuffink responds, “Dad said it depends on how the meeting goes, he didn’t know what Duggard was like.”

“Duggard is a really kind man, a little weird sometimes but he really cares.” Dak explains to them

“He seems like it.” Zephyr mutters.

“So, what do you two want to see first?” Leyla asks them.

Hiccup and Astrid were following Duggard into the town hall, the room was filled with tables but the room was empty. The three of them sat down at one of the tables and started discussing.

“Is your tribe new to this archipelago?” Duggard asks them.

“New ish.” Hiccup answers, “We moved 10 years ago.”

“If you don’t mind me asking, where did you used to live?” Duggard asks.

“The Barbaric Archipelago.” Astrid explains.

“I’ve heard of that archipelago,” Duggard responds to them.

“Have you ever been there?” Hiccup asks

“No, but the twins have.” Duggard answers.

“With their parents?” Astrid asks.

“No, their parents are a long story.” Duggard responds.

“Oh,” Hiccup sighs.

“Now we should start actually discussing becoming allies.” Astrid cuts in.

“This island is so cool.” Nuffink tells the teens.

“It's definitely different from how New Berk is.” Zephyr adds in.

“Question, why is your island called New Berk?” Dak asks.

“Because our tribe moved islands years ago, so Berk became New Berk.” Nuffink explains.

“That makes way more sense, thank you.” Dak responds.

“Is there anything else to see here?” Zephyr asks, looking around.

“Well, we showed you the entire town,” Leyla mutters, looking up at the roost where the rest of the Rescue Riders were now arriving. “Are you two afraid of dragons?”

“No, why?” Zephyr asks.

“So do you want to see dragons?” Leyla asks.

“Yes!” Nuffink yells.

“Great, let's go.” Dak responds

The four of them ran up to the roost where the five dragons were waiting, “Where did Dak and Leyla go?” Cutter asks.

“They should be here somewhere.” Summer replies.

“There they are!” Burple yells looking at the twins who were nearing the roost.

“Who’s with them?” Aggro asks, noticing the two extra children.

“I have never seen them before.” Cutter replies, using his super site to get a better look at them.

“They must’ve come with the chief Duggard is meeting with.” Winger suggests.

“Probably.” Summer replies.

“You guys are dragon riders?” Zephyr asks the twins.

“In a way.” Leyla responds,

“That is so cool.” Nuffink responds, looking at the dragons.

“What are their names?” Zephyr asks.

“Summer, Cutter, Winger, Burple, and Aggro.” Dak answers, pointing at each dragon.

“Amazing.” Nuffink mutters looking out at the dragons.

“Obviously.” Cutter responds to the boy.

“It’s almost sunset, should we go find your parents?” Leyla asks the Berkains.

“Yeah, probably.” Zephyr responds.

Zephyr and Nuffink started towards the great hall, leaving Dak and Leyla behind.

“So who are the kids?” Summer asks.

“Zephyr and Nuffink, Duggard asked us to show them around.” Leyla answers.

“Of course he did.” Cutter mutters.

“We have to go catch up with those two.” Dak mutters.

“Go.” Winger responds to them.

Dak and Leyla run to catch up with the Berkians, who are on one of the bridges now. “What took you guys so long?” Nuffink asks.

“Nothing.” Dak responds to the boy.

“If I had to guess, Duggard and your parents are probably in the great hall.” Leyla tells the kids.

“Let’s go.” Nuffink tells them, running towards the building.

The three adults were leaving the great hall, they had discussed multiple things. Duggard told them about trustable traders in the area. Now Duggard was showing them around the town introducing them to Hannahr,

“Do you know where to find any good metal?” Hiccup asks the woman, “Gobber has been complaining about how poor the mental is on New Berk”

“Blacksmith's bay has materials that strengthen metal.” Hannahr responds, “It’s not far from here I can get you a map.”

“Thank you I would gladly appreciate a map to this island, and I’ll tell Gobber about it.” Hiccup responds.

“Dad!” Nuffink yells, getting his father’s attention.

The adults turn to the four kids that were walking towards them, “Hey Duggard.” Leyla greets.

“Hello, Rescue Riders.” Duggard responds.

“Rescue Riders?” Hiccup asks.

“They’re dragon riders.” Nuffink cuts in

“Hmm?” Hiccup asks.

“They trained 5 dragons.” Zephyr explains.

“I wouldn’t really say trained.” Dak mutters, “More like saved but okay.”

“Wait, your dragons are still here?” Astrid asks, confused.

“Yeah, there are hundreds of dragons around Huttsgalor.” Leyla explains.

“That doesn’t make sense.” Hiccup mutters.

“What’s wrong?” Duggard asks.

“We might want to continue this conversation in the great hall.” Astrid suggests.

“Yeah, let’s go if you don’t mind.” Hiccup responds to them.

They went back into the great hall, most of them were sitting at a table but Dak and Leyla were sitting on a table to the side.

“Before we moved to New Berk we lived in a dragon utopia.” Hiccup starts, “We had hundreds of dragons living on the island, but we kept getting attacked so that’s when we moved but we were still getting hunted. On New Berk the dragons left lead by Toothless the king of dragons, so we thought all dragons went into hiding, but your dragons are still here.”

“From what I’ve researched there have been multiple different rulers of dragons,” Leyla starts, “The bewilderbeast, Red Death, and Toothless whatever type of dragon he is.”

“He’s a night fury.” Hiccup responds to the girl.

Leyla whips her head over to the man, “Seriously?”

“Yes?” Hiccup responds.

“Ignore my twin, she's a dragon nerd.” Dak tells the man, “Like a huge one.”

Astrid laughs at the boy's comment, “Don’t worry Hiccup is too.”

“Anyways,” Leyla starts, pulling her dragon diary out of her bag, “There are multiple kings of dragons, so when Toothless led the dragons away into hiding it was only the ones under his command.”

Hiccup listens to the girl but is more focused on the book in her hands. It was a leather book that looked like any other old book, the thing that jumped out was the crest on the cover. It was the crest of the defenders of the wing made of gold. “W-where did you get that book?”

“It was my mothers.” Leyla responds.

Hiccup reaches his hand out in a way of asking for the book, Leyla hands the book to the older man who starts flipping through it. The writing was by two different people, Hiccup recognized the writing in the beginning; he seen it multiple times through Terror Mails when they still lived on Old Berk.

“Is something wrong?” Leyla asks the man.

“N-no.” Hiccup responds, handing the book back to the girl.

“It’s getting late, how about we continue in the morning.” Duggard suggests.

“Let’s do that, thank you.” Hiccup tells the man.

“We’ll see you in the morning.” Dak tells the group, walking out of the room with his sister.

“Let’s meet back here a little before midday.” Duggard suggests to the leaders.

“That sounds good.” Astrid responds to the man.

The Haddock family goes back to the boat for the night, the youngest of them quickly going to sleep leaving their parents alone. Hiccup was supposed to be working on something but instead he was staring out thinking.

“What’s wrong, hun?” Astrid asks her husband sitting next to him.

“It’s just those kids.” Hiccup responds.

“What about them?” Astrid asks, “The fact they ride dragons?”

“No,” Hiccup sighs, “The notebook Leyla had, has the defender of the wing crest on it.”

“What?” Astrid asks.

“And Mala’s writing was inside it on the beginning pages.” Hiccup adds on.

“How would they have it?” Astrid asks.

“I don’t know.” Hiccup mutters, “She said it was her mothers.”

“Now that I’m thinking about it they do resemble Dagur and Mala.” Astrid mumbles.

“They look like Mala’s clones with Dagur’s hair. The resemblance is terrifying.” Hiccup responds

“We don’t know anything that has happened over the years.” Hiccup sighs.

“We could visit after this.” Astrid suggests.

“It’s a 3-day sail.” Hiccup responds, “And we might not even be welcome anymore, we left without a trace. I can only imagine how mad Dagur and Heather will be.”

“If we explain our reasoning to them, I’m sure they’ll understand.” Astrid responds.

“Dagur isn’t necessarily good at understanding.” Hiccup laughs quietly.

“Hey,” Astrid starts, sitting next to Hiccup, “They will understand they would’ve done the exact same.”

“I know,” Hiccup sighs, “Do you ever miss them?”

“Yeah,” Astrid responds, “I miss Heather and Dagur you know when he isn’t insane.”

“Do you think they miss us?” Hiccup asks.

“I would hope so.” Astrid mutters.

The next morning, they met in the great hall again, sitting in the same places as the day before. The only difference was now the rest of the rescue riders were also in the room. Hiccup was explaining more about what happened before New Berk to the group.

“That’s horrible, I’m sorry this happened to you.” Duggard tells the chief.

“It’s okay.” Hiccup responds, looking around the room. Zephyr and Nuffink knew all the stories already, they’ve been used as bedtime stories for years but they were still listening, adding their own input. Dak and Leyla were both intrigued with the stories asking questions which Hiccup and Astrid both answered. The resemblance of Dagur and Mala showed through to the dragon riders, the two of them acted much like them it was unreal.

After the stories were done, they started talking about the surrounding island and the people on them.

“These island names are weird.” Nuffink mutters, after hearing about Gutsgalor.

“You’re not wrong,” Dak replies.

“If you don’t mind me asking, what other islands are you meeting with?” Duggard asks the chief.

“We don’t really know,” Hiccup responds, “Most of the surrounding islands have been allies for years and we’re only now meeting with them.”

“Do you know any surrounding islands that we should go to?” Astrid asks.

“Yeah, I can get you a list of the best islands.” Duggard responds standing up to find paper.

“Do you guys know any fun islands around?” Zephyr asks the teens.

“Flyhopper Island is pretty fun, the island has a colony of these dragons that are tiny, but they use their tails to throw things.” Dak explains.

Leyla grabs a map, laying out on the table having the Berkians walk over to see it. “I would recommend staying away from Hazard Island, Grumbleguard gets really grumpy when people intrude.”

“Grumblegaurd?” Hiccup asks.

“He’s this giant Foreverhorn that lives on the island, using a wind blast that keeps people away.” Leyla explains.

“I’ve never heard of a Foreverhorn.” Hiccup mutters.

“Most of the dragons in this area don’t usually travel far.” Dak explains, “And Grumpypants is like over 200 years old.”

“How?” Nuffink asks.

“Foreverhorns also have one of the longest life spans of any dragons.” Leyla adds in.

“That’s incredible.” Hiccup admires, “Do you have any notes on the dragons in the area?”

“She has notebooks full.” Dak laughs.

“Don’t judge me.” Leyla responds, elbowing her brother.

“I wasn’t.” Dak responds.

“Would you be willing to let me look at these notes?” Hiccup asks the girl.

“Yeah sure.” Leyla responds, she grabs her dragon diary from her bag handing it to the man, “That has everything I’ve learned about dragons in it.” A shout for the Rescue Riders came from outside the Great Hall, making the twins stand up from where they were sitting, “You can look through it while we deal with this.”

“Thank you.” Hiccup responds, watching the two leave with their dragons. Zephyr and Nuffink look at their parents then the door, showing that they wanted to follow.

“Go.” Astrid tells them, allowing them to run out of the room.

Hiccup looks down at the book in his hands, the Defenders of the Wing crest more clear, Astrid looks over her husband’s shoulder looking at the pages he was flipping through.

“You weren’t lying.” Astrid mutters, “That is definitely Mala’s writing.”

“Yep.” Hiccup mutters, the pages had drawings and definitions for each dragon including dragons Hiccup already knew about. “This has more knowledge than the book of dragons.”

“She definitely could be Mala’s daughter.” Astrid mutters.

Hiccup turns to face his wife, “But how would the two of them end up here? The Defenders of the Wing is far away from here, and they seem to not know anything about their parents.”

“We might need to ask.” Astrid responds, “But I doubt they’d tell us.”

“How about we go see Dagur and Mala,” Hiccup suggests, “then we come back to see about the twins”

“That sounds like a bright idea.” Astrid tells him.

“We’ll go back to New Berk, tell the others what we’ve found and decide who’s coming with us to Defenders of the Wing.” Hiccup explains,

“We can explain why we left as well.” Astrid adds, “They’ll know where we live and why we left, no more problems.”

“We could meet with Heather and Atail while we’re there and tell them what has happened too.” Hiccup suggests, “Hopefully it’ll be as easy as it sounds.”

“Hopefully.” Astrid mimics.

They finish the meeting, Duggard gives them the list of nearby islands that would be good allies and the twins give them islands to stay away from. The Haddock family were now sailing away from Huttsgalor towards New Berk, “That was a good meeting.” Astrid mutters.

“We definitely found some things out.” Hiccup responds.

“Dak and Leyla are really cool.” Nuffink adds in, “I hope we can see them again.”

“We will.” Astrid responds, “Duggard welcomed us whenever we want to visit.”

“Yes!” Nuffink yells, shooting his arms up.

Zephyr laughs at her brother's reaction before the two of them go to the front of the ship watching the islands as they pass. “Do you think they’re Dagur and Mala’s kids?” Astrid asks.

“I don’t know, they definitely could be.” Hiccup responds, “It isn’t just the looks or the book, but they act just like them.”

“They really do.” Astrid responds.

“I hope Dagur and Mala are okay,” Hiccup mutters, “If those two are here what could’ve happened?”

“We have no way of knowing.” Astrid responds, “Until we meet with them again.”

“Let’s hope we all agree and can do it soon.” Hiccup answers looking at their kids who were still staring out to the islands in front of them.

Chapter Text

Hiccup and his family returned to Berk, met by Valka on the docks. “How was the new island?” Valka asks the family.

“It was so cool!” Nuffink yells, running towards his grandmother.

“We definitely needed to talk about what we found out.” Astrid tells the woman.

“What did you find?” Valka asks.

“Dragon riders.” Hiccup responds.

“What?” Valka asks, “Aren’t all the dragons in-”

“The Hidden World?” Hiccup interrupts, “That's what we thought.”

“We definitely need to have a meeting about this.” Astrid tells the family, “We’ll get everyone and meet in the great hall.”

“Great.” Hiccup sighs.

The past dragon riders meet in the great hall, excusing Gobber who volunteered to watch the Haddock kids during the meeting. “What’s this about?” Snotlout complains still at a table with the rest of the past dragon riders.

“We discovered something at the new island we visited.” Astrid starts.

“A new type of plant or something?” Tuffnut asks, annoyed.

“No, dragons.” Hiccup responds.

“I thought all the dragons were in the hidden world?” Erit asks.

“From what we heard there are dragons all over that area of the archipelago.” Hiccup answers.

“Any dragons we haven’t heard about?” Fishlegs asks excitedly.

“Yeah,” Astrid responds, “Hiccup got to read all about them.”

“Who did the research?” Eret asks.

“A 12-year-old girl.” Hiccup responds, “Who is also a dragon rider.”

“What?” The room asks.

“Her and her brother are both dragon riders.” Astrid explains, “Going by the name of Rescue Riders.”

“Wha-” Snotlout starts.

“Rescue Riders is way cooler than our name!” Tuffnut yells, cutting the other man off.

“We were just dragon riders!” Ruffnut yells, adding on.

“We should steal their name.” Tuffnut suggests.

“Genus.” Ruffnut responds.

“Wait guys.” Hiccup sighs, “We aren’t stealing their name.”

“Why not?” Tuffnut asks, “I don’t think they’ll mind.”

“We aren’t even dragon riders anymore.” Snotlout tells the twins.

“Going back, how do they have dragons on the island?” Fishlegs asks, “I thought all dragons were hiding in the hidden world, how would two kids tame them?”

“Technically they tamed five.” Nuffink cuts in.

“What!”

“Nuff, what are you doing in here?” Hiccup asks his son.

“I wanted to grab my helmet.” Nuffink responds, picking his helmet off of the table it was sitting on.

“How do you know how many dragons they tamed?” Snotlout asks.

“Well, me and Zeph were being showed around by them.” Nuffink responds, “so they showed us their dragons.”

“What were they like?” Fishlegs asks.

“The dragons or the riders?” Nuffink asks.

“Either.” Snotlout responds.

“The riders, Dak and Leyla are so cool.” Nuffink tells his uncles, “I didn’t really get to see much about the dragons though.”

“Well knowing Hiccup we’re definitely going to that island soon.” Fishlegs responds.

“You're not wrong.” Hiccup sighs, “But first we’re going to the defenders of the wing.”

“Why?” Erik asks, “I get you want to see past allies but I don’t see the urgency.”

“Well one of the dragon riders we met had a notebook with the defenders of the wing crest.” Hiccup explains, “And the notes were Mala’s hand writing.”

“There’s no way.” Snotlout laughs, “First how would it even get here? Second Mala is terrifying when it comes to her stuff. So I doubt she would’ve lost it.”

“There’s one more thing.” Astrid sighs, “We don’t if it’s true or not but-”

“What is it?” Fishlegs asks.

“The owner of the notebook and her twin brother look exactly like Mala and Dagur.” Hiccup tells the room.

“They were clones of Mala with Dagur’s hair and eye color.” Astrid adds on.

“What!” Snotlout yells, looking around the room at the other riders with similar reactions.

“Are you sure?” Fishlegs asks.

“Are you seeing things?” The Nut twins ask the chiefs.

“No we weren’t seeing things.” Hiccup sighs, “They’re also the dragon riders we just told you about.”

“So they might be Dagur and Mala’s children's.” Snotlout mutters.

“I agree we need to go to the defenders of the wing.” Fishlegs tells the room.

“Are you sure you don’t want to go because of one nearby island?” Tuffnut teases.

“You don’t know anything!” Fishlegs yells in response.

“Hmm.” Snotlout mutters.

“It’s not like you don’t want to see Minden!” Fishlegs tells the Jorgenson.

“Oh, shut up Fishface!” Snotlout yells.

“Guys!” Astrid yells getting the group's attention again, “We’re going to have to see all of our past allies, so you’re going to have to deal with your relationships no matter how it ends up.”

“Can’t we stay here?” Snotlout asks.

“Yeah.” Fishlegs mutters.

“Nope.” Hiccup responds, pulling out a map lying it on the table in front of them, “If we leave tomorrow morning

we should be there in 3 days time.”

“That’s forever.” Ruffnut complains.

“It’s 3 days.” Hiccup sighs.

“It’s a one-day dragon ride.” Tuffnut argues.

“Well, we don’t have the dragons.” Hiccup replies.

"We could steal the kid’s dragons-” Ruffnut suggests.

“No!” Hiccup responds, “We aren’t doing that, we will be sailing and that’s the end of it.”

“Okay, we’re sailing but whose all coming?” Fishlegs asks, “Other than us?”

“I’d say Gobber and Erit join us and my mother stays behind with-” Hiccup starts.

“No.” Zephyr interrupts, “Please let us come.”

“You’ll be gone for weeks.” Nuff adds.

“I-I don’t know.” Hiccup sighs.

“We’ll be good and help with the ship.” Nuffink suggests, “Please?”

Hiccup looks over at his wife who nods slightly, turning back to his two children, “If you both are good and follow directions the entire time, I guess you can come.”

“Yes!” The Haddocks siblings yell in sync.

Huttsgalor

It was a few days since Duggard had the meeting with the chief of New Berk, since the meeting Huttsgalor started getting thunder and lightning storms keeping everyone inside for the most part. The Rescue Riders were held up in the roost and have been since the storm started.

The roost was colder than most of the town being higher up then the rest of the town so Winger tasked himself to get more firewood, Dak was somewhere in the lighthouse with Cutter, while Leyla and Burple were in the mail level with Summer and Aggro. Burple had been sitting in silence for hours and it started to bug him so he got an idea to make some type of noise to distract himself. Except his chosen noise starts getting everyone more irritated.

“Burple!” Aggro snaps after hearing it long enough, “Can you stop?”

“What?” Burple asks, turning to the firefury.

“The sound.” Summer clarifies.

“What’s wrong with it?” Burple asks.

“It’s annoying.” Aggro responds.

Burple turns to Leyla who was working on something not listening, “Ley do you think the sound is annoying?”

Leyla turns to face the rockspitter, “I wouldn’t it isn’t.”

“Aww.” Burple mutters.

“Sorry Burps, It’s just we’ve been stuck in here for days.” Leyla sighs, “We’re all getting a little annoyed at everything now.”

“I know.” Burple interrupts.

“I found it!” Dak yells from upstairs stopping the conversation.

“Found what?” Leyla asks, walking up the stairs to see what Dak was doing.

“My pendent.” Dak responds, handing it to his twin.

The pendants were metal, with a different crest on each side. One was the same crest as Leyla’s dragon diary and the other one was a crest neither of the twins knew. Dak and Leyla have had the pendants since they were little, the pendants were the last thing they had from their parents. Dak had lost his a few weeks before and had only found it when he was rearranging his room for the fifth time.

“Where was it?” Leyla asks, flipping the pendent in her hand.

“Under my bed, must’ve rolled there when Magnus’s mechanical dragon fired at the roost last.” Dak explains

“Maybe keep it somewhere safer now.” Leyla suggests handing it back.

“I will.” Dak responds walking back into his room.

“You better.” Leyla yells after him.

"Yeah, yeah." Dak mutters.

Berk

The dragon riders were preparing for the voyage to Defenders of the Wing, they were taking two ships splitting up for half of them on each. Gobber and Eret were helping prepare both were also going on the voyage, Valka even with Zephyr and Nuffink going with stayed back to keep things in order on New Berk.

“So how far exactly is this island away?” Eret asks, getting on the ship with Hiccup.

“It’s a 3-day sail.” Hiccup responds.

“Great.” Eret sighs.

“You don’t have to come.” Hiccup tells the man.

“I want to.” Eret sighs, “It’s fine.”

“Okay, just making sure.” Hiccup responds, “You don’t know our old allies.”

“Dagur can be a lot.” Snotlout adds in.

“So are you.” Fishlegs mutters.

“Oh, shut up.” Snotlout responds.

“Any other allies?” Eret asks.

“Most of them are more normal.” Hiccup responds.

“Dad.” Nuffink starts, “Can you tell us stories on the way?”

“Yeah, sure Nuff.” Hiccup responds.

“It’s time to get going.” Gobber tells the group.

“Got it Gobber.” Hiccup tells the man, turning to the rest of the group, “Everything ready.”

“Yeah, everything is loaded and ready to go.” Astrid responds.

“Great, let’s go.” Hiccup tells them.

The boat leaves the dock sailing towards the island of their old allies, there are many different ways this could go and the dragon riders were prepared for every one of them.

Defenders of the wing

It had been years since the dragon hunters were taken out, a few hunters were still around but taken out quickly. Mala and Dagur were still close with most of their allies excluding Berk, and they were having a meeting. The meeting topics differed most of the time as well as the island the meeting takes place on. This time it was going to be on Defenders of the Wing, Throk and Dagur teamed up to set up the meeting while Mala handled something else.

The meeting was being held in the middle of town as usual, Dagur and Throk teamed up to set up tables and chairs for it. They didn’t have a set topic for the meeting, Atali needed to tell them about some hunters the wing maidens caught near the island.

Mala was dealing with a trivial matter, a few days before hunters attempted to sneak onto the island but they were quickly caught before they caused any trouble.

“We aren’t telling you anything.” One of the hunters told the queen.

“You can only get out of this alive if you tell me.” Mala tells the group, crouching down to their level.

The man doesn’t respond, only shaking his head. Mala looked at the guard behind her nodding for them to grab the group of men in front of her. Even while being dragged away none of the hunter’s talked, Mala sighed walking towards the meeting spot to inform to the two men about what happened

Atali and Minden had already arrived and were talking with Dagur and Throk, Atali walked over to the queen greeting her, pulling her into a hug. Mala hugs her back, before the two of them walk to talk with the others.

“What happened with the hunters?” Dagur asks his wife.

“They won’t give up their leader.” Mala sighs, “We’ll need to find another way.”

“Same with the hunters we captured.” Atali adds in, “I doubt any of them will tell.”

“We’ll need to find another way to get their leader.” Dagur adds in.

“It’s going to take a lot to hunt the leader down.” Throk sighs.

“I know.” Mala responds

A terror mail flies towards the group interrupting the conversation, Mala takes the note from the dragon reading it, “Heather can’t make it.” Mala sighs, “We’ll have to tell her everything later.”

“Is everything okay?” Atali asks.

“Yeah, it seems like nothing.” Mala responds.

“We’ll send a terror mail back and meet with her later.” Dagur sighs, looking out to the docks on the island seeing the boats nearing, “Is someone else coming?”

The rest of the group looks over seeing the two ships nearing the island, Mala grabs a telescope to see the ship’s flags. “What?” Mala mutters.

“What is it?” Atali asks.

Mala doesn’t answer, only handing the telescope to the woman, who took it confused taking a look at the boats herself, “Is that the Berk flag?”

“What?” Dagur asks, “Berk?”

“It looks like it.” Atali responds, “I thought Hiccup and the others were gone.”

“So did we.” Mala mutters.

“Let’s go down to the docks and see what’s happening.” Throk suggests.

“That sounds like the best thing to do.” Dagur responds, walking with the others towards the docks. Sleuther follows close behind them

Hiccup and the rest of the dragon riders were almost at Defenders of the Wing, they could see the island. Hiccup was looking at everything through a telescope. “Looks like nothing has changed.” Hiccup mutters.

“What do you think is going to happen?” Tuffnut asks.

“What do you mean?” Astrid asks.

“Are they going to be mad?” Tuffnut asks, “Or did they miss us.”

“It’s probably both.” Ruffnut replies.

“Dagur definitely is on the mad side.” Snotlout cuts in, looking at Hiccup who wasn’t listening, “What do you think Hiccup?”

“Hmm?” Hiccup asks, looking towards his friend.

“Do you think Dagur will be mad?” Snotlout asks.

“Oh definitely.” Hiccup responds.

“Do we think that Dagur still has his dragon?” Snotlout asks.

“Maybe.” Hiccup sighs, “The great protector has to be here still.”

“Great Protector?” Eret asks.

“It’s a dragon that eats lava from the volcano protecting the town.” Fishlegs explains.

“Why do they live on an island with a volcano?” Erit asks.

“No idea.’ Tuffnut responds.

“It’s they’re culture though.” Ruffnut adds in, “They’ve lived there for years.”

“Okay,” Eret mutters, looking up at the island they were docking at.

Huttsgalor

Dak and Leyla were in town with the rest of the Rescue Riders, they were helping Elbone after he lost Rocky, again.

“Thank you, Rescue Riders.” Elbone tells the group, hugging the rock close to his face.

“It was our pleasure, Elbone.” Leyla tells the man.

Elbone leaves walking towards his home leaving the RR in the town, “So what now?” Cutter asks.

“Nothing unless something happens.” Dak responds.

“You're going to jinx us.” Leyla sighs

“No I’m not.” Dak responds.

“Rescue Riders!” Marena yells, getting the group’s attention.

Leyla looks at her twin who looks away sheepishly, “Sorry.” Dak mutters.

“What’s wrong Marena?” Leyla asks, ignoring her twin.

“I’ve found out about something.” Marnea starts.

“What is it?” Dak asks.

“There are dragon hunters in a nearby archipelago.” Marena starts, “It’s about a three day sail and one day dragon ride, these hunters are taking dragons like nothing I’ve seen before.”

“What do you mean?” Dak asks.

“They’re using these arrows that can knock down an entire flock of dragons.” Marena explains.

“If I had to guess, it’s probably dragon root.” Leyla responds.

“Good thinking, Leyla.” Marena compliments.

“What’s dragon root?” Burple asks.

“Dragon root is a plant that affects dragons and other reptiles, it can cause all types of effects.” Leyla explains.

“What archipelago did you find them in?” Dak asks.

“The Barbaric Archipelago.” Marena answers.

“We’ve been there before.” Leyla starts, “There are a lot of dragon hunters and pirates in that area.”

“Do you know any of the hunters?” Dak asks the woman.

“I didn’t recognize any of them.” Marena explains, “We need to deal with them.”

“We need a plan first.” Leyla responds.

“Then we can go?” Dak asks.

“Yep.” Leyla answers, turning back to the woman, “Are you coming with us?”

“Yeah.” Marena tells her, “For your protection.”

“We don’t need it, but thanks Marena.” Dak tells the woman.

Marena nods, distracting the group to disappear as she always does, “Classic Marena exit.” Cutter laughs.

“Definitely.” Dak laughs, looking around to see if he could find her.

"You definitely jinxed us." Leyla chuckles, turning to start walking towards the roost.

"I didn't mean too," Dak responds, catching up to his twin walking with her and the dragons towards the roost.

Chapter Text

The group of leaders didn’t make it far when they confirmed who was on the ship, both Hiccup and Astrid were getting off followed by the rest of the dragon riders and two kids. They were much older, Hiccup looked different, more adult, more like his father. They knew what happened to Stoick, his death was grieved in and out of the archipelago. The other dragon riders were older looking as well, except Snotlout who Dagur thought didn’t change at all.

When they reached the docks they could get a better look at the group, they were waiting on the docks for Dagur and Mala unaware that Atali and Minden were also there. Hiccup and Astrid were standing in the front waiting for the two leaders.

“Hiccup?” Dagur asks, looking at his brother he thought was gone.

“Hi, brother.” Hiccup greets.

“Brother?” Eret asks, getting no response.

Dagur ignores the comment walking towards his younger brother pulling him into a hug, “We thought you died.” Dagur mutters towards the berkian.

“It’s a long story.” Hiccup responds, resting his head on his older brother’s shoulder.

“You better start telling it then.” Atali cuts in.

“What are you doing here?” Astrid asks.

“We were having a meeting.” Atali answers.

“Oh.” Astrid sighs,

Atali looks past the woman at the rest of the dragon riders behind her. She knew all of them except a few the man in the front who questioned when Hiccup called Dagur brother and the two kids near the back of the group, “If you don’t mind me asking whose kids are those?” Atali asks.

“They are Hiccup and Astrids.” Snotlout answers.

“You have kids?” Dagur asks.

“Yep.” Hiccup responds, gesturing for the two siblings to come up. Nuffink and Zephyr walk up standing in front of their parents, “This Zephyr and Nuffink.”

Dagur crouches down to the kid's level reaching his hand out, “I’m your uncle Dagur.”

“Question, can I call you Dag?” Nuffink asks.

“Go for it kid.” Dagur responds, standing back up.

“I can’t call you nicknames but the kids you just met can?” Snotlout asks.

“Yeah.” Dagur responds

“Not fair.” Snotlout mutters

“I think it’s plenty fair,” Dagur responds.

Nuffink walks over to the older adults ignoring his parents complets, he stands in front of Mala putting his hand out towards her, “I’m Nuffink.”

“I’m Mala.” She replies, shaking the boy's hand.

“Your aunt Mala.” Dagur cuts in.

“Cool.” Nuffink says, “Hi auntie Mala.”

“Hi.” Mala laughs, looking back up at the past dragon riders, “How about we go back to the meeting spot so you all can start explaining where you’ve been these years.”

“Let’s do it.” Astrid responds.

The group of them walk up to the meeting spot, stopping when they noticed the two haddock children weren’t following and instead looking at Sluether who they saw.

“You don’t have to be scared of him.” Dagur tells his nephew and niece.

“I’m not.” Nuffink responds, “He’s so cool.”

“What’s his name?” Zephyr asks.

“Sluether.” Dagur answers.

“So cool.” Nuffink says in aw.

Dagur looks over at the past dragon riders, realizing that they missed something. With everything around the reunion they didn’t notice the absence of the dragons, “Speaking of dragons.” Dagur starts, “Where are you guys?”

“They went into hiding.” Hiccup responds, “Long story, we’ll explain later.”

“Then let’s get started.” Mala tells them.

The rescue riders were flying towards the archipelago, Marena was with them as well as Axel. The blonde had started being kinder to them after Magnus and the alpha crystals. He was riding Cutter, the two of them had gotten closer over the months it took awhile but Axel eventually earned the RR’s trust again.

Marena was riding Burple close to the front with the twins, the group knew they were almost there when they flew through thick fog separating the beginning of the archipelago. “We’re going the right way, right?” Burple asks, the last time the twins were in this archlego was before Cutter and Burple joined the team so they didn’t know the area as well.

“Yep.” Leyla responds, looking down at the map in her hands, “We’ll start at the northern markets and see what we can find.”

“You all have weapons right?” Marena asks.

“Yeah, why?” Axel asks.

“The Northern Markets are a dangerous place.” Marena starts, “Especially towards dragon riders.”

“They really don’t like us.” Leyla adds in, “We stole from a few people there when we were young.”

“Really?” Axel asks.

“Yeah, we were poor kids, what else could we do?” Dak asks.

“Was it from hunters at least?” Marena asks.

“Of course.” Leyla responds.

“We only stole from them because they pissed off Ley.” Dak explains.

“What’d they do?” Axel asks.

“When we were young there was this one worker who helped us a lot.” Dak explains, “One day when we were there hunters attacked her stall causing her to get badly injured.”

“We sunk their ships and stole their gold.” Leyla finishes.

“Pfft-” Axel laughs, at the girl being so blunt about it.

“And we returned what they stole.” Dak adds in.

“Well that’s good.” Marena tells the twins.

“When we get to the northern markets, we’ll land in the woods and the dragons will wait while we go see what we can find.” Leyla explains.

“Sounds good Ley.” Axel tells her.

They sneak onto the island, hiding the dragon in a nearby cave. Dak and Leyla both had hoods on hiding their faces, while Marena and Axel didn't; neither of them had any enemies at least in this part of the archipelago. All four of them had their weapons visible, the markets were as crowded at this time of day.

They split up into groups of two to search faster, Axel and Leyla teamed up and Dak and Marena were a team.

Axel and Leyla were walking through the south side of the markets, which had more weapon stalls meaning more hunters were around.

“Let’s make this quick.” Leyla tells the teen.

“Sounds good to me.” Axel responds.

After an hour of walking around the markets neither of the two groups found anything, so they met back up in the forest near the dragons.

“Did you find anything?” Aggro asks.

“Nope.” Dak sighs, “We looked everywhere except the docks.”

“Well then we still need to check the docks.” Leyla responds, “Me and Axel can do it quickly.”

“Go,” Marena tells the two, watching as they leave towards the docks.

“This sucks.” Cutter mutters, “You’d think there would be more hunters here.”

“You're not wrong.” Dak sighs, sitting down next to his brother.

“What did he say?” Marena asks.

“He thought there would be more hunters.” Dak translates.

“Well past dragon riders used to be around here.” Marena responds.

“Really?” Dak asks.

“The defenders of the Wing used to be frequent here as well as Berk and The Berserkers.”

“Hmm.” Dak mutters.

“What?” Marena asks.

“Well, we met the chief of Berk like a week ago.” Dak explains.

“You did?” Marena asks.

“Yeah they were who Duggard was meeting with.” Dak explains.

“I knew their island moved, I just didn’t know where.” Marena tells the boy.

“They live north of Huttsgalor.” Dak tells her, “Moved there 10 years ago.”

“Hmm.” Marena mutters.

Axel and Leyla were walking to the docks, it wasn’t a long walk about 10 minutes. The two of them were looking out at the docks from a cliff, Leyla was using a telescope to get a closer look at the sails.

“Anything?” Axel asks.

“Not yet.” Leyla responds, the ships were mainly traders unloading supplies; a few ships were outliers with white sails and no supplies on them. After a few minutes three new ships were seen closing in on the docks, they had torn sails as if they were attacked by dragons. There were green cages on the deck, all of them were empty though. Looking back at the sails, they weren’t white the sails were stained, old with a red melting fist on them.

“I see something.” Leyla mutters, handing the telescope over to the other teen.

Axel looks at the ships recognizing the symbol, “The Grimborns.” Axel mutters.

“What who?” Leyla asks.

“They are brutal dragon hunters.” Axel explains, “They capture, use, and sell dragons.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me.” Leyla mutters, “They must be who Marena saw.”

“What now Ley?” Axel asks.

“We go get the dragons and capture one of these hunters.” Leyla responds.

“Sounds good.” Axel mutters.

The Rescue Riders were back on their dragons flying towards the ships, Axel and Leyla found. The ships were sailing away from the northern markets now, one was further back so that’s the one Marena told them to attack.

Leyla and Summer dived down into the water, steering the ships in the opposite direction.

“What’s happening?” One of the hunters asks, looking over the side of the ship.

Dak and Winger fly down followed by Aggro and Cutter towards the ships, all three of the dragons start firing on the ship. Marena jumped down, getting the attention of the hunters, who run towards her. A bunch of hunters grab arrows firing at the dragons.

“Avoid the arrows!” Leyla yells, after her and Summer resurface.

“That was already the plan!” Cutter yells towards her.

“We only need one!” Axel yells, firing down on the sails.

Dak and Winger fly over, grabbing on of the hunters by the shoulders flying away followed by the others leaving the sinking ship.

“Let me go you brats!”

“We will if you tell us who you work for.” Leyla tells the man.

“I’d rather die.”

“That can be arranged.” Dak laughs, looking down at his dragon, “Wing if you don’t mind.”

“Not at all.” Winger responds, dropping the man who starts screaming.

“All right I’ll tell you!”

“Works every time.” Dak laughs, singling for Winger to dive down to grab the man.

They land on a nearby sea stack, surrounding the man, “So who do you work for?” Leyla asks.

“Ivar Grimborn.” The hunter starts, “He’s the son of Ryker Grimborn, he took over when he was old enough to lead.”

“You're just giving everything away.” Axel laughs.

“When you get kidnapped by the freak of nature twins you don’t lie.” The hunter responds.

“Freak of nature?” Dak asks

“Every hunter has heard of the Rescue Riders, the group of young dragon riders whose leaders can speak to dragons.”

“At least we’re known.” Cutter laughs.

“Not the time, Cutter.” Leyla tells the dragon, turning back to the hunter, “Where can we find this Ivar Grimborn?”

The sun was setting over Defenders of the wing, the past dragon riders had been talking for hours explaining everything that has happened in the last 10 years.

“Why did you ask us for help?” Throk asks, “We would’ve helped.”

“We didn’t want to drag you in.” Hiccup responds, “It wasn’t your problem.”

“Hiccup, we're family.” Dagur starts, “We wouldn’t have complained or anything.”

“I know.” Hiccup sighs.

“So where are your dragons?” Minden asks.

“The hidden world.” Hiccup responds.

“The hidden world is real?” Mala asks.

“Yeah.” Hiccup responds.

“So Toothless the king of dragons lead all of Berk’s dragons into the hidden world?” Atali asks.

“Yeah.” Astrid sighs.

“Why did other dragons follow?” Throk asks, “We’ve constantly seen dragons around the islands here.”

“We think it’s because Toothless was only the leader of dragons who lived on Berk at the time.” Hiccup explains, “The dragons stayed away for safety.”

“Technically that was the dragon rider’s explanation.” Snotlout cuts in.

“Dragon rider?” Mala asks.

“We met these twin dragon riders on a nearby island.” Hiccup explains, “That’s how we found out not all dragons are in the hidden world.”

“How old are they?” Atali asks.

“I don’t kn-” Hiccup starts.

“12.” Zephyr interrupts, “We were shown around the island by them.”

“12!” Dagur yells, “Sorry to break it to you brother but I think they’re better dragon trainers then you.”

“They definitely are.” Astrid sighs.

“We need to talk more about this.” Mala sighs, “How about we set up a place for all of you to stay then we can continue this in the morning.”

“That sounds good.” Astrid sighs.

“I’ll send a terror mail to Heather.” Dagur tells them, “Have her come here and meet us.”

“How is Heather?” Fishlegs asks.

“Heather is good.” Dagur responds, “Her and her daughter.”

“She has a kid?” Fishlegs asks.

“Yeah, Halley she’s 8.” Dagur responds, “Really sweet girl.”

“Oh.” Fishlegs mutters.

“Do you guys have kids?” Snotlout asks.

“Yeah,” Mala responds, “we did.”

“Did?” Snotlout asks.

“Snotlout!” Astrid mutters towards him.

“It’s fine.” Mala sighs, “Um, we had two kids but they were kidnapped and died when they were almost 2.”

Astrid covers her mouth with her hand, looking towards her husband, “I am so sorry.”

“Yeah.” Mala mutters, “We’ll meet back in the morning.”

The leaders of Defenders of the wing walk away towards their own home, after showing the dragon riders where they could stay for the night.

Hiccup looks over to Atali who was watching the leaders leave, “What were their names?” Hiccup asks.

“Dak and Leyla.” Atali answers, “Their names were Dak and Leyla.”

Hiccup and Astrid look at each other then the other dragon riders in shock, confirming what they already thought.

“What’s wrong?” Minden asks.

“I think we’ve met Dak and Leyla.” Hiccup responds.

The Rescue Riders were still in the barbaric archipelago, they set up camp on a nearby island. The hunter they found was dropped off on an abandoned island, and left.

Leyla and Marena were looking at a nearby hunter camp, they could hear them from their campsite not conversations by laughing. “Any ideas Leyla?” Marena asks the girl.

“Not yet.” Leyla responds.

Down in the camp their leader was having a meeting in one of the tents, “The Rescue Rider’s have joined us.”

“Finally.” Ivar laughs, “Thought they’d never come.”

“Would you like to gather everyone to explain?”

“No,” Ivar responds, “Knowing the Rescue Rider they’re probably watching us right now, so we’re sending them on a wild goose chase.”

“Okay sir.”

Notes:

Nuffink made it his personal mission to make the dragon riders a family again

I love writing Axel as a good person and a older sibling to the twins cause he deserved better in the show

A have a few more ocs coming in this story

As I said in my last notes, kudos and comments really help me get the motivation to write more so if you have any ideas comment them please <3

Chapter Text

“What do you mean you’ve met Dak and Leyla?” Atali asks.

“They were the dragon riders we told you about.” Astrid explains.

“That’s not possible.” Minden mutters, “They died in the shipwreck.”

“Did these kids even look like Dagur and Mala?” Atali asks,

“Honestly yes they do.” Hiccup responds, “They look like Mala’s clones with Dagur’s hair and eye color.”

“I’m still not convicted.” Minden tells the group. “We can’t tell Dagur and Mala unless we know it’s true.”

“We can’t even tell them we have a theory?” Fishlegs asks.

“I wouldn’t.” Atali responds, “When the twins were shipwrecked their bodies weren’t found, Dagur took it as a sign that they were still alive and started acting crazy.”

“Like how he was when he was young?” Astrid asks.

“Worse.” Atali responds, “After years Dagur finally calmed down and accepted it, not their death but that he couldn’t find them.”

“Mala became really depressed after she blamed herself for what happened.” Minden explains, “If this turns out to be nothing it would send them right back.”

“So, we won’t tell them until we have evidence of it.” Astrid suggests.

“Yep.” Hiccup responds.

It was the next morning; the Rescue Riders took turns watching the camp throughout the night. Nothing changed, it looked like the hunters were building something, but Axel couldn’t tell what. They were using the same green metal that was on the ships to protect it.

“Any ideas?” Leyla asks the teen.

“Nope.” Axel responds, “It looks like a chunk of metal still.”

“It has to be important.” Leyla responds, “Or else why would it be so protected.”

“They could be trying to distract us.’ Axel suggests, getting a look from the girl, “If these hunters know about the Rescue Riders, then they know our tactics. So, they set something up for us to chase while they continue, they’re real plan.”

“Axe, that’s genius.” Leyla compliments, walking to find Marena and Dak.

“Really?” Axel asks following her.

“If they’re trying to distract us then they aren’t hiding their real plans.” Leyla starts, “The chunk of metal is our distraction, so we need to find what’s really happening.”

“So, what are we going to do?” Axel asks.

“Follow the ships.” Leyla responds, ships have been coming and going the entire time, they’ve been there. The ships didn’t seem to have anything important, but the Rescue Riders were too distracted to see what was happening. They packed up camp, following one of the ships towards where it was sailing.

“Any ideas where the boat is going?” Dak asks his sister.

“No.” Leyla responds, she had a map sitting in her lap constantly looking up and down to see what island they were going towards.

“We’ll keep following them until we find them.’ Marena tells them.

“That could take forever.” Cutter complains.

“No, it won’t.” Dak responds, “They can’t sail forever.”

“What if they could?” Burple asks.

“They can’t.” Leyla assures.

“Promise?” Burple asks.

“Yes, I promise Burps.” Leyla responds.

“Okay.” Burple sighs.

They flew in the same direction for a few more hours, the hunter ship didn’t stop, not even attacking dragons that flew nearby. “For a hunter ship they really aren’t attacking dragons.” Axel sighs.

“It’s weird.” Leyla sighs, “Maybe this is the distraction.”

“Hmm?” Dak asks.

“They got us away from their camp, and whatever they were building.” Leyla explains.

“I don’t think so,” Axel sighs, looking out at the boat which was going towards a nearby island now.

“What island is that?” Dak asks.

Leyla looks back down at the map, looking for the island and its name, “Berserker Island.”

“Why would they go there?” Axel asks.

“No clue.” Leyla responds looking out at the island.

“Let’s check it out.” Dak suggests.

“Let’s do it.” Leyla responds

Mala and Dagur were dealing with a trivial matter unaware of what the rest of them were discussing, “Are you sure?” Throk asks.

Atali thought it’d be best to at least tell Throk what they found out, even if they were keeping it from Dagur and Mala

“We’re sure Throk.” Astrid responds, “These two kids looked so much like Dagur and Mala it was concerning.”

“So where are they?” Atali asks.

“An island called Huttsgalor, it’s not far from where we live now.” Hiccup explains.

“Other than looks, was there anything else?” Minden asks

“Well yeah.” Astrid responds, “Personality wise they are just like them.”

“Hmm.” Atali mutters, the conversation was cut short by a terror mail landing near them. Minden grabs the note off the dragon's leg reading it.

“What’s wrong?” Astrid asks.

“Berserker Island is under attack.” Minden responds.

“What!” Hiccup asks, grabbing the note from the woman reading through it.

“By whom?” Fishlegs asks.

“There’s a new group of hunters that have been attacking dragons the past few months.” Throk explains.

“We lost our dragons just for more hunters to come back?” Tuffnut asks.

“I guess.” Ruffnut sighs.

“We need to help them.” Atali tells them, looking towards the dragon riders, “Are you guys going to help?”

“Yes.” Hiccup responds.

“How?” Snotlout asks, “We don’t have dragons?”

“We have fought many times without dragons.” Astrid argues.

“How will we get there?” Ruffnut asks

“We’ll figure it out.” Atali responds, “But first we need to tell Dagur and Mala what’s going on.”

“Okay, I’ll go tell them while you all figure everything else out.” Throk tells them walking away.

“You have a plan to get there Hiccup?” Atali asks.

“Yeah, I do.” Hiccup responds.

The Rescue Riders were watching Berserker Island from a nearby sea stack, the hunter ship started getting closer. It was obvious that it was sailing to a more unprotected spot on the island.

“What are they doing?” Dak asks, looking at the ship.

“I don’t know.” Leyla responds, looking at Marena, “Any ideas?”

“Leyla do me a favor and look on the other side to see if any more ships are coming.”

“Why?” Leyla asks the woman.

“Just do it.” Marena responds.

Leyla climbs on Summer flying up so she could look to the other side of the island, Cutter was close behind using a yellow crystal to see farther.

“Anything Cut?” Leyla asks the dragon.

“No-” Cutter responds, before noticing something, “Wait I see something!”

There were more ships sailing towards the island, the same flag was on all of them. The ships looked like they were prepared for a fight, multiple defaces were visible on all of the ships “There’s more ships!”

“Just as I thought.” Marena tells them, “They are having a distraction at the front of the island so these hunters can sneak through the back.”

“We have to warn the chief.” Dak tells them.

“I don’t think we have time.” Axel responds, watching as the hunters start leaving the ship running through the forest towards the village.

“Shit.” Leyla mutters, “We need to go now.”

“Me, Axel, and Aggro will deal with the chief you two go distract the approaching ships.” Marena tells them.

“Got it.” Dak responds, flying away from the sea stack with his sister. “What do you think they need from this island?”

“I don’t know.” Leyla responds, looking at the ships that were sailing towards the island.

Heather was walking home from the great hall, she had been dealing with trivial matters through the entire day. Halley was not far in front of her, she requested to come to the meeting as well. Not to listen to anything but to read, she only could read well while it was loud.

“Mom?” Halley starts, turning back to her mother.

“Yes, Halley?” Heather asks.

“Why didn’t we go see uncle Dagur and auntie Mala yesterday?”

“You know that one Viking who's always mad?” Heather asks.

“Yeah?” Halley asks.

“He’s why.” Heather answers, not explaining further to her daughter.

“M'kay.” Halley responds.

Axel and Marena land in front of the two, both of them jumping off their dragons.

“What is this?” Heather asks them.

“So, there are hunters about to attack your island.” Axel tells the woman.

“What do you mean?” Heather asks.

“Currently there are hunters running through your woods.” Marena explains.

“Halley go find Windshear.”

“Mom.” Halley complains, Heather gives her daughter a look which makes her stay quiet anymore arguments and go find her mother's dragon.

“Let’s go.” Heather tells Marena and Axel, “You two are going to explain everything while I prepare for this.”

“Okay, ma’am.” Axel responds, following her with Marena.

“Why exactly where you two around my island?” Heather asks.

“We were following a hunter ship that led us to your island.” Axel responds, “Then we saw the rest of the ships coming here.”

“Are there any more of you?” Heather asks,

“Yeah, there’s two more of us.” Axel responds.

“Lovely.” Heather mutters, “Why were you following the ship?”

“Cause they’re dragon hunters.” Axel responds, “And we were trying to stop them.”

“Okay then.” Heather responds, quickly writing a terror mail to send to defenders of the wing.

“What’s that?” Axel asks, watching the woman.

“Terror mail.” Heather responds, watching the dragon leave, “To my brother.”

“Okay, what now?” Marena asks.

“We stand our ground.” Heather responds, grabbing her weapon, “And wait for help.”

"Got it." Marena responds.

Hiccup was walking through the woods on defenders of the wing with the rest of the dragon riders.

“This is a bad idea.” Snotlout tells him.

“You’ve told me.” Hiccup responds.

“Just cause there are wild dragons on this island doesn’t mean you can tame them!” Snotlout yells.

“Again, you’ve told me.” Hiccup responds, reaching the entrance of the cave opening.

“Just making sure you know.” Snotlout responds.

The dragon riders needed a way to Berserker Island, Hiccup remembered about the nest in the middle of the island and got an idea. Nuffink and Zephyr stayed in the town with Throk who was staying on Defenders of the Wing to keep things protected there.

“Are you sure you can do this?” Astrid asks her husband.

“No, not really.” Hiccup responds

“I believe in you, Hiccy.” Tuffnut tells his friend.

“Okay then,” Hiccup mutters.

The dragons around the nest were of all ages, thankfully the dragon riders still knew how to tame dragons like theres. It didn’t take long until Astrid successfully had a deadly nadder tamed, next was Fishlegs who really just bribed the Gronkle with rocks. The nut twins somehow tamed a dragon, and Snotlout did too. Hiccup climbed on the deadly nader with Astrid, all of them fly out of the cave landing in the city.

“So cool.” Nuffink tells his parents after seeing them on the dragon

“Good to see you can still ride a dragon.” Dagur tells his brother.

“Let’s get going.” Astrid tells them.

Dak and Leyla were flying over the ships, blasting their sails and distracting the hunters on the ships. Dak looked over to the island, noticing the building on top of the mountain. Dak flies next to his sister, grabbing the telescope of her saddle.

“What are you doing?” Leyla asks.

“Looking at something.” Dak responds, the building looked like stables and dragon hunters were surrounding it.

“The hunters are attacking a building on top of the mountain!” Dak yells.

“Go deal with them.” Leyla tells him, “I’ll continue dealing with this.

“Okay,” Dak responds, “Be safe Ley.”

“Always am.”

Dak flies towards the building on the hill getting a closer look at the hunters. The group of hunters were trying to get in, but couldn’t figure out how.

“This’ll be easy, Wing.” Dak laughs

“Definitely.” Winger responds, the swift wing fires on the hunters making them run into the woods away from the building. The door was ajar, but it seemed like the hunters didn’t notice. Dak jumps off his dragon brother walking into the stables.

“Anyone in here?” Dak asks.

“Who are you?” Halley asks.

“A friend.” Dak responds.

“I don’t know you.” Halley responds, walking out to see the teen. He looked familiar to her in a way, but she didn’t know how.

“Good point.” Dak sighs.

“There you are.” A hunter tells them, opening the door the rest of the way.

“Shit.” Dak mutters, grabbing one of his knives moving to stand in front of the girl.

“The Rescue Riders?” The hunter asks amused,

“Rescue Riders?” Halley asks, looking at Dak.

“Hmm, too bad boss doesn’t want you two.”

“So he wants a child?” Dak asks.

“The child of a very powerful island.”

“Still doesn’t make it better dude.” Dak responds to him.

“Hmm.” The hunter responds, walking towards the two of them.

Dak throws one of his knives hitting the man, when he tries to do it again, he misses allowing the bigger man to grab him by the arm throwing him to the ground. Winger lands firing on the man, knocking him out.

“Dang I’m usually better than that.” Dak mutters standing back up,

"That was bad." Winger laughs.

Dak whips his head over the dragon before looking back to the girl behind him, “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.” Halley responds

Dak nods climbing on his dragon flying away leaving the girl alone, Halley was about to leave when she sees something shiny on the ground. Picking it up she sees the crests on each side, one crest was the defenders of the wing one and the other was the Berserker crest.

“Hmm.” Halley mutters, shoving the pendent in her pocket.

The dragon riders land on Berserker Island, except nothing was wrong there was visible signs of a fight, but the hunters were dealt with. Dagur jumps off Sluether running towards his sister making sure she was okay, “What happened?” Dagur asks.

“These hunters attacked but dragon riders stopped them.” Heather explains.

“Dragon riders?” Dagur asks.

“They came here warning us and helped us deal with the hunters.” Heather explains.

“Uncle Dag!” Halley yells running over to the man.

“Hi, Hails.” Dagur responds, putting the girl on his shoulders.

“Are you okay?” Heather asks her daughter.

“Yeah, I’m fine this dragon rider saved me.” Halley responds.

“Really?” Heather asks.

“Yeah, it was cool.” Halley responds, “He kinda reminded me of auntie Mala.”

“Did he have red hair?” Astrid asks.

“Yeah, he did.” Halley responds.

“Hmm.” Astrid mutters.

“What are you guys thinking?” Mala asks, looking at the dragon riders confused.

“Also, he dropped this.” Halley tells them, fishing the pendent out of her pocket handing it to her uncle.

Dagur flips the pendent in his hand, looking at both of the familiar crests.

“Is that what I think it is?” Mala asks, grabbing it out of her husband’s hand.

Halley gets down off her uncle’s shoulders looking at the adult’s faces, “What’s wrong?”

“This was the gift I had made for the twins when they were born.” Heather mutters.

“Who are the twins?” Halley asks, looking at her aunt and uncle

The rescue riders were flying back towards Huttsgalor, the sun was set by the time they got home. Marena left them at the roost and the three teens went to get ready for bed. Dak reached into his pockets wanting to take the pendent he owned out but he couldn’t find it.

“Where is it?” Dak asks, starting to look around.

“What’s wrong, Dak?” Axel asks, from the doorway looking into Dak's trashed room.

“I can’t find my pendent.” Dak responds, throwing stuff around.

“I thought you just found it.” Axel responds.

“I did.” Dak responds.

“Where did you put it?” Axel asks, walking in to help search.

“My pocket.” Dak responds.

"Why was it in your pocket?” Axel asks.

“Cause I didn’t know where else to put it.” Dak sighs, falling onto his bed, “It must’ve fallen out when I fought that hunter.”

Axel sits next to Dak, “We’ll find it, I promise.”

“Hmm.” Dak mutters.

Axel bumps his shoulder into the other teen’s, “If anyone can find it, it’s you.” Axel tells him, “You are really good at finding things and losing them but it's the thought that counts.”

“Okay.” Dak mutters, “Thanks Axe,”

“No problem, Dak.” Axel responds walking out, “Good night!”

“Night!” Dak yells after him.

Notes:

Axel and Dak are some of my favorite siblings to write I love them

I'll probably not be posting as much in the next few weeks, I'll be focusing on school but I'll still be writing just not as much

As I said before comments and kudos help my motivation to write and I love getting them

Chapter 5: Lore Stuff

I gave the Berserker family a last name cause why not

Ragnvald - meaning counsel/ruler

I also gave Dak and Leyla middle names (Both of them were idea’s from my friend JcArtist_10)

Leyla- Herleifr

Dak- Hámund

Axel gets migraines which were caused by being around chemicals and building materials when he was young

Leyla has chronic joint pain which she always had but it was worsened by diving in deep water with Summer

Dak has short term memory loss, caused by a head injury

Leyla and Dak were both sick kids, but after living in the wild they never got sick except for fevers caused by stress

Sluether acts like a cranky old man when he gets woken up

Dak and Leyla barely argue, but when they do it’s just like how Mala and Dagur do

Both of the twins are extremely competitive with each other

Leyla fights similar to how Heather does

Dak got his eyebrow scar from a attack hunter when they were little

Leyla has a scar on her arm from falling out of a tree

Dak mimics Axel and Leyla to annoy them

Whenever the twins interact with Erik the Wretched, he high pitches his voice to seem less scary to them this only makes them concerned

Selvana the Sly will always have a grudge against the twins and Huttsgalor

Leyla picks her nails

Axel and Dak call each other random nicknames that make absolutely no sense most of the time

Dak learned how to swim after falling off a sea stack

When people find out about the twins being able to talk to dragons some thought it was a gift from the gods

Dak is either the first one up or the last one up and there is no in between

Axel gets up at the same time every day he has no clue how though

Marena is overly protective of the twins, neither of them know about it though

Leyla can’t listen when she's working and she’ll zone out when shes planning something

Dak isn’t allowed to cook ever cause he will either burn the kitchen down or poison someone or both

Axel is the one who banned him from cooking after he accidentally lit something on fire

Dak and Leyla have unnaturally high pain tolerances which they both got from Dagur

Axel knows how to give some medical care, setting breaks, fixing dislocated limbs, giving someone or himself stitches if needed, (Cause his family never helped him so he learned on his own)

Leyla also knows how to give medical care

Leyla has Aquaphobia which is a fear of drowning, (After she almost did when she was little, Cannon in the how I met Summer ep)

Dak laughs exactly like Dagur

Axel uses words that half of the others don’t understand

Half of Dak and Leyla’s clothes were stolen while they were little,

Leyla’s boots were too big for her until she was 10

Axel can pickpocket people

Leyla can pick locks

Dak barely ever translates what the dragon say correctly

Leyla can stay underwater for a crazy amount of time

When she first did it in Huttsgalor, Duggard thought she was dead until she resurfaced

Dak rearranges his room once a week

Axel and Leyla aren't allowed to make anything together anymore, Last time they did they accidently or maybe not built a bomb

Axel did the metal components and Leyla worked with the chemicals

Duggard wouldn't let them test it to see if it works and made them destroy it (much to both of their annoyance)

Leyla really enjoys learning about chemistry it's her second favorite thing to research

Dak and Axel have the most random arguments that most of the time don't make sense

Nuffink acts like Hiccup when he was young, (the really sassy part)

Zephyr comes up with the most creative threats when someone pisses her off

Halley loves dragons and reads about them all the time

Tuffnut proudly taught Nuffink how to swear

Notes:

I gave Leyla, Axel, and Dak my own problems in the first set of head cannons cause why not

Again, comment and kudos help my motivation to work on my fics, and if you have any Rescue Rider head cannons comment them please

Chapter 6: Explanations

Summary:

The dragon riders discover more about the dragon hunters, and Huttsgalor has another event

Notes:

Yes, I said I was going to slow down on posting chapter but right now this is my only comfort I don't have a reason behind it other than it helps me separate from realty, so more chapters are coming

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

It was the next day; the dragon riders had spent most of the night explaining what had happened over the years. Heather was rightfully mad about everything, but didn’t blame them.

“I still don’t get why you didn’t let us help.” Heather sighs, after hearing everything explained.

“We didn’t want to get your guys involved.” Hiccup responds, looking around the room.

Zephyr, Nuffink, and Halley were all talking in the corner; the two Haddock’s parents picked them up after the fight was over. Halley was very interested in everything, her family just expanded by a lot of people not even counting Dak and Leyla. Her mother wouldn’t tell her anything more, just took the pendent away from her and sent her to talk with her cousins.

“Do you guys know anything about the twins?” Halley asks.

“I think we’ve met them.” Zephyr responds, “And they were really cool.”

“Really?” Halley asks.

“Yeah, they were dragon riders too.” Nuffink adds in, “They tamed 5 dragons.”

“They tamed 5 dragons?” Halley asks.

“Yeah.” Zephyr responds.

The three of them continue talking, not realizing most of the adults left the room. The hunter Dak took out was in a jail cell, and was finally awake again. Dagur and Mala were looking into the cell, the hunter was sitting on the bench in the cell staring at them.

“That's why you look so familiar.” The hunter laughs, looking at the adults.

“What are you talking about?” Dagur asks.

“You must be the freak of nature twin’s parents.” The hunter responds, “I knew I recognized the crest on that pendant the kid dropped.

“What do you mean, freak of nature?” Hiccup asks, walking in with Heather.

“Oh, you don’t know?” The hunter asks, “Those twins can understand what dragons say.”

“What are you talking about?” Dagur asks.

“From what I’ve heard they were raised by dragon, which allows them to understand dragons.”

“That’s impossible.” Mala mutters.

“Yeah, well, so is them being alive.” the hunter responds, “So I think they can break what is possible pretty easily”

“Can I hurt him?” Dagur asks, walking towards the cell.

“No.” Both of his younger siblings respond, grabbing Dagur by his shoulders to stop him.

“How do you know all this?” Mala asks him.

“Oh, your kids are big heroes in an archipelago not far from here.” Looking over at Hiccup, “I’m surprised you didn’t know about them; New Berk is pretty close.”

“How do you-” Hiccup starts.

“Know where Berk is?” The hunter finishes, “A lot of hunters know, but since you have no dragons there’s no point in attacking you.”

“Good to know.” Hiccup mutters.

“Anyways, yeah Dak and Leyla are big heroes in that archipelago, not surprising knowing their parents now.”

“Hmm.” Mala sighs.

“The Rescue Riders have-”

“The Rescue Riders?” Dagur asks, interrupting.

“-Have made their fair share of enemies too, maybe they’re a little too much like their parents especially with the Grimborns back.” The hunter cuts himself off slapping his hand over his mouth

“Wait, what do you mean?” Hiccup asks.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“Yeah, you did.” Heather responds.

“No,”

“Yeah.” Hiccup responds, “Tell us.”

“They’ll kill me!”

“We could too, you know.” Dagur threatens.

“I am just realizing that.”

“Tell us everything you know, and we’ll keep you safe.” Mala tells the man.

“No, you won’t!” The hunter responds.

“I promise.” Mala assures.

“Fine, Ryker’s son Ivar Grimborn has taken over.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa.” Dagur starts, “Back up what do you mean Ryker’s son?”

“Yeah, he was born during the last battle and was 15 when his father was killed so he really doesn't like any of you.”

“What did we do?” Hiccup asks.

“You are kind of the reason his father is dead.”

“Ryker was killed by Viggo.” Heather argues, “And the submaripper.”

“Well Ivar blames you all.” The hunter responds, “You’re lucky he didn’t know about your kids, or he definitely would-” He shuts up after getting glares from all of them, “Anyways he’s set up camp on an island near the northern markets.”

“What’s his plan?” Hiccup asks.

“I can’t- never mind he’s sailing towards Huttsgalor, the Rescue Riders know about something that can be used against dragons.”

“What is it?” Mala asks.

“I don’t know.”

“Hmm.” Heather mutters.

“I don’t! He wouldn’t tell any of us.”

“Why did he come here?” Heather asks.

“He wanted us to capture your daughter.”

“What!” Heather yells, getting closer to the cell, “Why!”

“He said something about getting revenge, but we failed so he’s going to the next step.”

“The next step is getting the rescue riders?” Hiccup asks.

“Just the twins, he also knows about you two being their parents.”

“How would he know about that?” Dagur asks.

“He seems to know a lot of things like that, I don’t know where he finds this stuff out.”

“Great, that's all we need.” Hiccup tells him walking out with the other three.

“Wait one more thing!” The hunter yells, getting their attention.

“What?” Dagur asks.

“Ivar knows that your kids exist now, and you don’t have dragons to protect the island. He’ll try something, either hurting them or taking them.”

“Got it.” Hiccup mutters, walking out with the others.

“What now?” Heather asks.

“We will take a trip to Huttsgalor.’ Hiccup responds, “I know the chief, we can meet with him soon.”

“Thank you, Hiccup.” Dagur sighs.

“It’s no problem, they’re technically my niece and nephew.” Hiccup responds.

“Yeah.” Dagur smiles.

“Dak, why would you keep it in your pocket?” Leyla asks, they were sitting around in the base level of the roost.

“I don’t know.” Dak sighs, “I was thinking of a safer place but then we had to deal with hunters.”

“And that’s why you put it in your pocket?” Axel asks.

“Yeah,” Dak sighs.

“Like I said last night we’ll find it.” Axel tells the teen.

“Yeah, and when we do, I’ll keep it in a much safer place.” Dak smiles.

“Good.” Leyla responds, standing up, “You guys want to see what’s going on in Huttsgalor.”

“Yeah, let’s go.” Axel responds,

The three Rescue Riders walk out of the Roost, the dragons were flying around playing. Huttsgalor was filled with traders and some people from the markets. Duggard had set up a market day once a month so some of the people from the markets could get their supplies to the closer islands.

“Rescue Riders!” Andora yells, getting the three’s attention.

“Hi, Andora!” Dak yells running over to her.

“How are you all?” Andora asks.

“We’re fine, Andora.” Leyla responds, “Is Zyren here?”

“Yeah, he’s at my stall.” Andora responds.

“Thanks,” Leyla mutters, walking to find him.

“They disgust me sometimes.” Dak mutters.

“Yeah, I know.” Axel responds.

Zyren was helping his mother set up her stall, they had arrived not long before. There were newly made weapons around the stall, and some people were already looking around.

“Zyren!” Leyla calls getting his attention.

“Hey, Ley.” Zyren greets, walking over to her, “What have you guys been up to?”

“We went to Berserker Island yesterday.” Leyla responds.

“What!” Zyren yells, whipping his head around, “Tell me everything, what was the island like? Why were you there?”

“We were following hunters that led us to the island-.” Leyla starts.

“Did you fight them?” Zyren asks.

“Yeah of course we did,” Leyla responds.

"Of course." Zyren laughs.

“Zyren!” Andora yells, the two of them turn to face her seeing the consumers lined up at her stall.

“Tell me everything, tonight.” Zyren tells her,

“I will.” Leyla assures, Zyren smiles, running off to his mother.

“Aww.” Dak teases, moving to stand behind his twin.

“I’ll punch you.” Leyla responds, turning to face him.

“Sure.” Dak responds, “Duggard needs our help setting up for something.”

“For what?” Leyla asks, walking with Dak to find Duggard.

“No idea, it’s a big secret.” Dak answers.

“Of course it is.” Leyla mutters.

“He definitely has a flair for the dramatic.” Dak laughs.

“So do you.” Leyla argues.

“I never said I didn’t.” Dak laughs, “Now let’s find him and Axe.”

“Race you!” Leyla yells running off.

“Ley!” Dak yells racing after her.

The dragon hunters were sailing towards Huttsgalor, they were a few hours away. Ivar was on the front of the ship watching the surroundings.

“Sir everything is ready!” A hunter yells, getting the man out of his thoughts.

“Good,” Ivar responds.

“Also, we’ve gotten word from the hunters you sent to Berserker Island.”

“And?” Ivar asks, turning to face the man.

“They failed, the Rescue riders didn’t fall for you trap and followed the correct ships and protected the island,”

“Of course they did.” Ivar sighs, “I should’ve known.”

“Are we continuing to the island?”

“Of course we are!” Ivar yells, “The dragon riders killed my father, so now I’ll take their children.”

“And what about Hiccup Haddock’s children?”

“I’ll deal with them as well.” Ivar responds.

“Why would capturing Dak and Leyla hurt Dagur and Mala if they think they’re dead anyways?”

“You’ll see.” Ivar responds.

“Okay then.” The hunter responds walking away.

Ivar laughs quietly looking out from the top of the ship at the approaching island, “Those dragon riders won’t see what’s coming.”

The dragon riders were sailing towards Huttsgalor, they had a few more hours until they reached there. Sluether and Windshear were both helping the ship move faster, the rest of the dragon riders were talking on the dock of the boat.

“So, what is going to happen after we find the twins?” Snotlout asks.

“Explain what’s going on.” Heather suggests.

“Will they even believe us?” Dagur asks.

“We have no way of knowing now.” Mala sighs.

Halley was looking at the pendent in her hand, she stole it from Dagur’s pocket, and he hadn’t noticed the absence of it yet.

“Isn’t that the pendent of Dak’s?” Nuffink asks, sitting down next to her.

“Yeah.” Halley responds, handing the pendent to the Haddock.

“Where did you get it?” Zephyr asks.

“Out of Uncle Dag’s pocket.” Halley responds, looking over to her uncle “He hasn’t even noticed.”

“He’s probably distracted.” Zephyr mutters looking over to man.

“Definitely.” Halley sighs.

Nuffink flips the pendent over, looking at both of the crests under the Berserker crest there as three runes engraved.

ᛞᚺᚨ

“What do those stand for?” Zephyr asks, looking at the runes.

“Dak Hámundr Ragnvald.” Heather cuts in, taking the pendent away from her nephew, “Dak’s full name, I had this made when the twins were born one for both of them”

“Oh,” Halley mutters, “Sorry for taking the pendent.”

“Go give it back to your uncle.” Heather responds, handing the pendent to her daughter.

“Okay, mom.’ Halley responds, standing up to walk over to her uncle.

Dagur wasn’t paying attention to anything, he was stuck in thought, “Uncle Dag?” Halley asks, getting his attention.

“Yeah, Hails?” Dagur asks.

Halley hands back the pendent much to her uncle’s surprise, “Sorry for stealing it.”

“It’s okay.” Dagur sighs, “I shouldn't have thought you how to pickpocket.”

“Yeah, you really shouldn’t have.” Halley giggles.

“How about you keep it safe for me?” Dagur suggests handing the pendent to his niece again.

“Really?” Halley asks.

“Yeah,” Dagur responds.

“I’ll keep it safe, I promise.” Halley assures.

“I know you will.’ Dagur responds.

Halley hugs her uncle before walking back over to where her cousins and mom, Mala walked over to where her husband was, “We’ll find them.” Dagur assures.

“I know we will.” Mala responds.

I wanted this chapter to be longer but nevertheless I'm posting it

Chapter 7: The Markets

Summary:

The dragon riders and the Rescue Riders on Huttsgalor

Notes:

This one took me longer than normal, mainly because I had the entire thing written but I didn't like it, so I rewrote it

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

“A little to the left!” Duggard yells up at the Rescue Riders.

“I thought you said this was important?” Leyla asks.

“Duggard said it was.” Dak responds.

“Duggard thinks a sheep festival is important.” Leyla argues.

“Good point.” Dak mutters.

Dak and Leyla were both standing on the backs of their dragons, helping Duggard hang a banner up, apparently Duggard extended the market day to a week because of how many people were there. A few people from New Berk were there as well, looking around the island and stalls.

“There! That’s perfect!” Duggard yells

“Finally,” Leyla sighs.

“So, what now?” Dak asks, once both of them were on the ground again.

“We could walk around the markets.” Axel suggests, “Me and cutter flew above the town and there are way more stalls then last year.”

“That sounds good.” Dak responds.

“We should see if Finn wants to come with us.” Leyla suggests.

“Where is he?” Axel asks.

“I think he’s helping his mom set up her stall.” Leyla responds.

“She has a stall?” Dak asks, looking around.

“She’s selling baked goods.” Axel tells him, “I think her stall is near the great hall.”

“Let’s go then!” Dak responds running off to find Finn.

"Dak!" Axel yells, "Do we have to run!"

"Obviously." Leyla laughs, running after her twin.

"Why do they have to be so competitive?" Axel mutters, running after the two twins.

The dragon riders boat reached the docks of Huttsgalor, said docks were way more filled than the last time the Haddocks were there.

“What’s going on?” Dagur asks, looking around.

“I think it’s the market day, Duggard told us about.” Astrid answers.

“How are we going to find them, with all those people?” Erit asks, “Half of us don’t even know what they look like.”

“Just look for mini versions of those two.” Tuffnut responds, pointing at the rulers of Defenders of the Wing.

“Oh, that is so helpful, thanks.” Eret responds sarcastically.

“They are not much taller than Halley, and they have bright red hair. You can’t miss them.” Hiccup responds

“Why are they the same height as an eight-year-old?” Snotlout asks.

“If I had to guess, probably malnutrition.” Heather answers which confuses the man more

“Why would that be the answer?” Snotlout asks.

“Because they lived in the wild for years.” Hiccup responds.

“How do you know this?” Snotlout asks.

“Cause the hunter told us.” Hiccup responds.

“Well, I wasn’t there so.” Snotlout replies, “It doesn’t count.”

The group of them leave the boat walking into the markets, Zephyr, Nuffink, and Halley were walking in front of them.

“Dad, can we go look around?” Zephyr asks.

Halley looks over to her mother, “Please?”

“Sure,” Hiccup responds, looking over to his sister who nods.

“Yes, let’s go!” Nuffink yells, running off with the other three.

The rundown one of the streets throughout the stalls, none of them were paying attention and Halley runs into someone knocking them both on the ground.

“Oh, my Thor I am so sorry.”  Halley apologies, standing up then moving to help the other person.

“It's okay,” Finn laughs, looking at the three of them, “Are you guys new here, I’ve never seen you before.”

“Yeah, we’re just visiting.” Zephyr responds.

“Do you know about any cool stalls?” Nuffink asks

“Ooh, Andora’s stall is pretty cool, she sells weapons.” Finn responds

“Where is it?” Nuffink asks.

“She should be near the great hall; I saw it earlier when I was helping my mum set up.” Finn responds, “I can show you.”

“Thank you.” Halley responds.

“It’s no problem,” Finn responds, Finn leads them to the stall that was in the middle of the markets. His mother’s booth wasn’t far away from Andora’s, Zyren was with his mom helping with the line. “Here we are, Andora’s stall.”

“Thanks again.” Halley tells him.

“It’s no problem.” Finn responds, looking around.

“Finn!” Leyla yells, getting his attention.

Finn turns to face the teens, the three of them were near his mother's stall. The blonde turns to the three he showed around, “Well if you need anything else, anyone will gladly help you.”

“Oh, hey, Nuffink Zephyr I didn’t know you guys were coming.” Dak tells them.

“These are the kids Duggard had you two show around?” Axel asks.

“Yeah.” Leyla answers, “They’re the chiefs of berk kids.”

“Speaking of that, where are your parents?” Dak asks the two.

“They’re looking around.” Zephyr lies; she thought it would be best if the adults explained everything to them. Thought it be more believable than one of them attempting to explain.

Dak looked over to the other girl, he knew her already from when they helped Berserker Island, “Hi again.”

“Hi.” Halley smiles.

“You know them?” Finn asks her.

“Yeah, he saved my life.” Halley responds, “From a dragon hunter.”

“Wait, you're the Berserker Chief’s daughter?” Finn asks.

“Yeah.” Halley responds.

“That is so cool.” Finn tells her.

“Anyways Finn, we're going to help around the markets. Do you want to join?” Leyla asks the blonde.

“Yeah, sure Ley.” Finn responds, turning back to the other three, “I’ll see you guys later.”

“See you later.” Halley responds.

The Rescue Riders walk in the opposite direction from the three dragon rider’s children. “So, what was that, Finn?” Axel asks.

“What do you mean?” Finn asks, “I was just showing them around.”

“Sure.” Axel mutters.

“Anyways, where do we want to look first?” Dak asks.

"I think my mum needs some extra help." Finn tells them.

"Got it, let's go." Leyla responds, walking with the others.

Ivar and his hunters were sailing towards the back of the island, fortunately for them the back of Huttsgalor was less protected then where the town was.

“Sir, we are approaching the island!” One of the hunter's yells, getting his attention.

“I can see that,” Ivar responds.

“Are you going to tell us your plan?” The hunter asks.

“Where’s the fun in that?” Ivar asks, “The people that need to know are aware of the plan.”

“But sir-”

“You aren’t one of the people that need to know.” Ivar assures the man, “So either you stop complaining or you go over the side of the ship.”

“Sorry, Sir.”

“Just go prepare.” Ivar responds, looking up at the island, “This’ll be fun.”

Unknown to the hunters the back of the island wasn’t as unprotected as they thought, there was a dragon’s nest on top of the mountain looking down at the water. From the Iron Claw’s nest you could see most of the island, from the boiling springs valley to the icey and winter part of the island.

“Hmm.”

The mama iron claw mutters before flying towards the town of Huttsgalor.

The dragon riders were walking through the markets, they had split up into groups to look around faster. With Ivar’s plans of attack they needed to find the twins quickly. Dagur and Hiccup teamed up, with Astrid and Heather teamed up as well.

“Are you sure this is the island?” Dagur asks.

“Yes, I’m sure.” Hiccup responds, “We’ll find them.”

“Hiccup!” Duggard yells, getting the chief’s attention.

The two brothers turn to face the man, Duggard was walking towards them through the crowd, “Hello Duggard.” Hiccup greets.

“I wasn’t aware you guys were coming.” Duggard comments.

“Sorry, it was a last-minute decision.” Hiccup responds.

Duggard looks over at the other man, “And you are?”

“This is my brother, Dagur.” Hiccup tells the man.

“Hello.” Dagur greets.

“Hi.” Duggard responds.

“Have you seen Dak and Leyla?” Hiccup asks him.

“I saw them earlier; they were near the great hall.” Duggard explains, “Why?”

“We’ll explain later.” Hiccup responds, the two brothers walk towards the great hall. There were stalls surrounding the great hall but none in front of the steps which were where the Rescue Riders happened to be. The four of them were sitting on the stairs eating. Finn’s mother gave them some of the baking from her stall after they helped her bring more out.

“Okay first-” Dak starts, loudly enough that the two men heard. Leyla shuts her brother up by elbowing him when she sees the two men approaching them. “Oh hi.”

“Hi, guys.” Hiccup greets.

“Zephyr and Nuffink are over there if you're looking for them” Leyla tells them pointing at where they left the others.

“Thanks.’ Hiccup responds, but neither of them leave.

“Do you need something else?” Dak asks

“Yeah,” Hiccup starts, “We need to talk with you guys about something.”

“What is it?” Leyla asks.

“Well-” Hiccup starts

“You pissed off dragon hunters.” Dagur cuts in.

“Not the first time.” Dak laughs, “And hopefully not the last.”

“A little too much like your father.” Hiccup mutters.

“Hmm?” Leyla asks.

“Nothing.” Hiccup responds, “The dragon hunters you pissed off are coming to get you.”

“Oh lovely.” Leyla mutters

“So we need to get you guys out of here.” Dagur tells them.

“We aren’t leaving just because a few dragon hunters got their feelings hurt.” Leyla responds, looking at the men.

“This is more than a few.” Dagur argues.

“Still.” Leyla responds.

“Oh thor.” Hiccup sighs.

“You are so much like your mother it’s ridiculous.” Dagur sighs.

“What?” Leyla asks.

“You knew our mother?” Dak asks.

“More like know.” Hiccup responds, “Your parents aren't dead.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” Leyla asks.

“We can explain more later.” Dagur responds.

“No, you can explain more now.” Leyla argues, standing up to walk towards the man.

“Yeah, we don’t have time.” Dagur responds.

“I don’t care.” Leyla responds, “I would like an explanation now.”

“Well, I know your parents are alive because-” Dagur is cut off by screaming around them.

The rest of the dragon riders were walking throughout the markets, grouped up as well. The nut twins and Erit, Fishlegs and Snotlout and Mala and Throk. Heather and Astrid were walking throughout the north side of the markets, “So you met the twins?” Heather asks.

“Once,” Astrid responds.

“What were they like?” Heather asks.

“A little too much like Dagur and Mala.” Astrid responds.

“You know other than that,” Heather responds

“Well, Leyla is really smart; she knows just as much as Fishlegs and Hiccup when it comes to dragons, Dak is just chaotic a mini Dagur personality wise.” Astrid explains, “But you know what I want to know?”

“What?” Heather asks.

“Who Halley’s father is.” Astrid responds.

“Astrid-”

“Just tell me.” Astrid pleads.

“Fine,” Heather sighs, “Halley’s father was a man named Tyr, he was horrible and left when she was two.”

“Oh-” Astrid mutters, “So is he still alive or did Dagur kill him.”

“He’s alive.” Heather responds, “I think, when Dagur and Mala found out about it they definitely wanted him dead.”

“Understandable, I think I want him dead.” Astrid responds.

“Enough about him,” Heather responds, “Zephyr and Nuffink, they are Hiccup’s, right?”

“Obviously they are.” Astrid responds.

“Just making sure.” Heather laughs.

“Did you have too?” Astrid asks.

“Yeah.” Heather laughs, “What’s new berk like?”

“It’s this huge island with cliffs and mountains.” Astrid explains.

“Have you ever missed old Berk?” Heather asks.

“Sometime.” Astrid responds, “I think Zeph and Nuff would’ve loved it.”

“So, Fishlegs.” Heather starts, “Is he seeing anyone.”

“No.” Astrid smiles, “He isn’t seeing anyone.’

“Oh-” Heather mutters.

“Are you still in love with him?” Astrid asks.

“No-” Heather starts.

“You so are!” Astrid yells.

“No, I’m not.” Heather argues

“Now you're just lying to yourself.” Astrid laughs, the two's conversation was stopped by people panicking around them. “What’s going on?”

“I don’t know.” Heather responds, looking around.

“Let’s go find the others.” Astrid suggests.

“Yeah, let’s go.” Heather responds, the two women run through the markets to find the rest of the group. Most of the dragon riders were still near each other, the nut twins weren’t even looking around for the other set of twins which is why they got teamed up with Erit. “Guys somethings happening!”

“We just saw a group of hunters entire the markets.” Fishlegs tells them.

“Shit.” Heather mutters, “We need to find everyone else.”

“Where are Nuffink, Zephyr and Halley?” Snotlout asks them.

“They're still looking around the markets.” Heather answers.

“I’ll go find them.” Fishlegs responds, running off to find the three kids.

“I’ll help him.” Throk adds in, running after Fishlegs.

“What’s going on?” Tuffnut asks, neither of the nut twins were there when they began talking so they weren’t aware of what all had been explained.

“It looks like Ivar’s plan has begun.” Heather answers.

“What are we going to do?” Astrid asks.

"We need to start by finding the others." Heather responds, followed by the others.

Notes:

I may or may not have forgotten Erit was supposed to be in this chapter, but I fixed it so it's fine

As I always say I greatly appreciate comments and kudos they help my motivation, and I really appreciate receiving them

Chapter Text

“Well I know your parents are alive because-” Dagur starts, cut off by chaos starting around them.

“What’s going on?” Dak asks, looking around.

“I don’t know.” Leyla answers, turning from the older man to the other Rescue Riders.

“Dragon hunters are attacking.” The Mother iron claw cuts in from above.

“How long have you been there?” Dak asks.

“For like-”

“Doesn’t matter.” Leyla cuts in, looking at the dragon which landed, “What do you mean dragon hunters are attacking?”

“I saw them from my nest,” She responds, “They came from the back of the island, they must’ve known it was less protected.”

“Shit.” Axel sighs

“It makes sense.” Dak cuts in, looking over to Leyla, “So what now?”

“We’ll get the dragons and see what’s going on.” Leyla starts, turning to find Finn, “Take Burple and Aggro and go find Zyren then meet us on the north side of the island, got it?”

“Got it, Ley.” Finn responds, taking off with the two dragons to find the teen.

“What about us?” Dak asks.

“We’re going to go see what’s going on.” Leyla answers, walking over to her dragon.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Hiccup asks her.

“No not really but we need to see what’s going on.” Leyla answers, “So this is all I got.”

“Okay,” Hiccup sighs.

“Be safe.” Dagur cuts in.

“Where's the fun in that?” Dak asks.

“Oh and.” Leyla starts turning the Berserker, “We’re not done with our conversation, if you try to leave this island I will find you.”

“Okay,” Dagur responds, watching the three teens and the mother iron claw take off flying towards the north side of the island.

“She’s a little too much like Mala.” Hiccup notes, looking over to his brother, “And you.”

“Yeah,” Dagur answers, “So should we go find the others?”

“Obviously Dagur,” Hiccup answers, running to either find the other dragon riders or the 3 children who were still in the markets somewhere.

The three dragon rider’s children were in the middle of the markets when the chaos started, most of the stalls surrounding them were just as confused as they were but the screams got people moving.

“What’s happening?” Nuffink asks, looking around.

“No idea.” Zephyr responds, looking around as well.

A few of the people marketing stalls left their stalls looking around to see what was happening as well, at the entrances of the market's hunters started flooding in. Making people start running down the street,

“Shit.” Nuffink mutters, looking at the hunters,

“Go! Go! Go!” Zephyr yells, pushing the two younger kids in the opposite direction from the hunters.

“Where?” Nuffink asks, running near his sister and cousin.

“Get to the boat.” Zephyr responds, continuing to push the younger two.

“How?” Halley asks, looking at the docks seeing more hunter ships surround it, “There’s hunters all around the docks!”

“Uh-.” Zephyr starts, looking around to find where they could go. Her eyes land on the light house sitting on a nearby sea stack “The lighthouse! Get to the lighthouse!”

Halley and Nuffink look to where Zephyr was referring to, “Isn’t that called the Roost?” Nuffink asks, remembering someone calling the lighthouse the roost last time they were there.

“It doesn’t matter what it’s called!” Halley yells.

“It matters to me!” Nuffink responds.

“You can ask what it’s called later.” Zephyr assures her brother.

“Fine,” Nuffink grumbles, the three of them successfully got out of the maze of stalls and out of the town running up the rope bridges towards the roost. The Roost’s yard was mostly clear for once, the targets were out of the way as well as different weapons that were left outside.

From the Roost the three kids could get a better view of the town and what was happening, more hunter ships were sailing towards the island preparing to fire boulders towards the island. “Who are they?” Nuffink asks.

“Dragon hunters,” Halley answers, looking down at the ships “I saw them when they attacked Berserker Island.”

“So what now?” Nuffink asks, looking over to his sister.

“We wait up here until everything clears,” Zephyr responds, sitting next to one of the boulders.

“Okay,” Nuffink sighs, sitting next to her.

Leyla, Dak, and Axel were flying over the north side of Huttsgalor getting a good look at what was going on. From there they could see dozens of ships coming from the front and behind of the island. The mother Iron Claw left them going back to her nest to protect her children.

“Yeah, I think we pissed some people off.” Dak mutters.

“Oh yeah definitely.” Axel adds in.

Leyla grabs the telescope off her saddle looking towards the ships sailing towards the back side of Huttsgalor, “If I had to guess, I think Ivar is here as well.”

“What?” Axel asks, getting the telescope thrown at him. Axel looks down at the ships seeing the older man standing on the front of the ship. From what Axel could tell he had pale skin and short black hair, not many more details could be made from where they were.

“Let me see.” Dak insists, reaching his hand out to grab the telescope.

“Fine,” Axel sighs, handing the telescope over to the red head.

Dak looks down to the man, “He looks weird.” Dak notes, throwing the telescope back to Leyla.

“That’s all you have to say?” Axel asks.

“Yeah.” Dak responds, “Does he not look weird?”

“He kind of does,” Leyla adds in, putting her telescope back in her saddle bag.

“You two are immature.” Axel notes

“Let us be kids for once.” Dak argues,

“Fine,” Axel laughs.

“Guys!” Finn yells getting the three’s attention, him and Zyren were flying towards them,

“We got most of the town to safety.” Zyren explains, “So what now?”

“We’re going to deal with the ships,” Leyla answers.

“All of us?” Zyren asks knowing him and Finn weren’t as experienced in an air battle.

“Can you and Finn grab our weapons from the roost?” Leyla asks, “It’ll be easier to take down more ships with them.”

“Yeah sure, Ley.” Finn responds, flying away with Zyren.

“So what ships are we starting with?” Dak asks, looking around at the dozens of ships.

Dagur and Hiccup were running through the town attempting to find anyone, some of the villages evacuated into the woods leaving very few villages and hunters. The hunters were ransacking stalls looking for something or someone, “Where is everyone?” Dagur whispers.

“I think most of them ran into the forest.” Hiccup answers.

“Can you see the kids anywhere?” Dagur asks.

“Nope.” Hiccup mutters, “There are none of the dragon riders either.”

“How about I go to the docks and get Sluether and Windshear.” Dagur suggests.

“Good idea.” Hiccup compliments.

Dagur sneaks away towards the docks leaving his brother alone, who continues looking around. Hiccup looks the Great hall seeing Duggard helping people to get into the forest safely, the chief of berk runs over to help.

“Hiccup?” Duggard questions turning to him, “Is your family, okay?”

“I haven’t been able to find them.” Hiccup sighs.

“Wait, I think I saw Zephyr and Nuffink run towards the roost.” Duggard explains, “There was another little girl with them as well, if that means anything.”

“Thank Thor.” Hiccup sighs, looking up at the lighthouse before turning back to Duggard, “How can I help?”

Zyren and Finn landed near the roost, both of them running to grab the weapons. All of the Rescue Riders weapons were kept at the roost including Finn, his mother was the biggest fan of him having an axe.

“Where are they?” Zyren asks, looking around.

“What are you looking for?” Nuffink asks.

“Holy shit!” Zyren jumps, turning to face the three kids, “Don’t repeat that word.”

“We know swear words.” Zephyr sighs.

“You never know.” Zyren responds, looking over to Finn who was attempting not to laugh “Don’t judge me.”

“I’m trying.” Finn laughs, leaving to continue looking for the weapons.

“Anyways, what are you looking for?” Halley asks.

“Weapons.” Finn responds, looking around more.

“Wait, I think I saw them!” Nuffink yells, running towards the targets. Just as he thought all of their weapons were sitting behind the target, “Found them!”

Finn and Zyren run over grabbing the weapons from the ground, “Thanks, Nuffink.” Finn tells him.

“Yeah,” Nuffink smiles.

“Okay, let’s go Finn,” Zyren starts, turning back towards Burple, stopping to turn back to the three kids, “You guys stay.”

“We know.” Halley answers.

“Just making sure.” Zyren responds, climbing onto Burple flying away from the roost with Aggro and Finn.

Dak, Leyla, and Axel finished taking out some of the ships in the front of the island, the dragon riders watched from their boat as the Rescue Riders gave them an opening to get into the town.

“Let’s go now.” Astrid mutters, climbing off their ship walking into the town.

“Good idea.” Heather compliments following close behind.

“Heather!” Dagur calls, running towards the group of them, “Is everyone okay?”

“Yeah, we’re fine.” Heather answers, “But Halley, Nuffink, and Zephyr are missing.”

“Shit.” Dagur sighs, looking around, “What now?”

“I would say that we split up,” Astrid starts, “Half of us go find the kids and the other half deal with the hunters.”

“Heather and I can take Sluether and Windshear to help with the ships.” Dagur suggests.

“Honestly I think those Rescue Riders have that covered.” Snotlout answers looking out at the sinking ships.

“Well then Heather takes Windshear to get a look of the island from above, tell us what’s going on and the rest of us split up to either find the kids or deal with hunters.” Astrid tells them, Heather nods, walking towards her dragon leaving the rest of them alone.

The dragon riders ran into the town, most of the dragon hunters were gone but the town was completely a mess. “Start looking, the three of them could be anywhere.” Astrid tells the group. All of them split up, starting to look around, some of the people that were in the woods started slowly coming back into the town once they knew the hunters were gone.

Thankfully the people of Huttsgalor all started helping search for the three kids, Andora was helping people organize giving all of them roles in what they needed to do.

Not long after Duggard and Hiccup come out, finding everyone looking around Huttsgalor, Heather and Astrid run towards Hiccup when they see the two of them. "What's happening?" Duggard asks.

“We can't find Nuffink, Zephyr, or Halley.” Astrid explains.

“Wait, I know where they are.” Hiccup starts, getting the group's attention, "They should be up near the lighthouse."

"Are you sure?" Heather asks.

"Yes," Duggard cuts in, "I saw them run towards the roost myself."

"Thank you." Heather sighs, running by towards the roost with Astrid and a few others.

Hiccup, Dagur, and Duggard stayed in the town continuing to look around and make sure everyone was okay, and all the hunters were dealt with.

Zephyr, Nuffink, and Halley were still sitting outside the roost, watching the action from above. “I hope mom and dad are okay.” Nuffink mutters.

“I’m sure they’re fine.” Zephyr assures her brother.

Halley was looking at the pendent in her hand to distract herself, following the engravings with her fingers. “I hope everyone is okay.” Halley mutters.

“Again, I’m sure everyone is fine.” Zephyr assures Halley turns her attention back to the pendent in her hands.

“Halley! Nuffink! Zephyr!”  Multiple people yell, getting the three’s attention.

Zephyr looks back at the rope bridges seeing the people approach, “Nuff, Halley!” Zephyr yells pointing at their approaching mothers.

The two youngest look up to where Zephyr was pointing, both of them jumping up running towards their mothers who were still approaching, Zephyr wasn’t far behind them.

Halley runs into her mother's arms, Heather crouches down holding her daughter, “Thank thor.” Heather mutters into her daughter’s hair.

Zephyr and Nuffink were both hugging Astrid when a loud crash brought them out of their reunion, “What was that?” Nuffink asks, looking around.

“I don’t know.” Astrid responds, looking into the town.

The Rescue Riders flew into the town, most of the hunter ships were now sailing away from the island. Finn and Zyren went to find their mothers leaving Axel, Dak, and Leyla alone looking around. Leyla looks towards Hiccup and Dagur who were both in the town as well.

“Where’s Duggard?” Leyla asks, looking around.

“The great hall.” Hiccup answers looking towards the building.

Dak and Leyla look over to the building, the Great Hall was still standing but that’s all you could really say about it. There were slashes and burns covering the building, the doors were visibly broken, almost falling over into the building.

“What is he doing in there?” Dak asks.

“He said something important was in there.” Dagur answers.

“Duggard thinks anything is important.” Leyla answers walking towards the great hall.

Unknown to any of them in the town, the dragon hunters were preparing to fire one more thing into the town. A boulder was in the catapult, which was also lit on fire. More catapults surrounded the one, all of them with the same weapon.

“Fire!” Ivar yells, five fire covered boulders fly into the town all of them hitting the great hall making the building start collapsing.

“Duggard!” Leyla yells, running towards the burning building.

Dagur runs after her, wrapping his arms around her, stopping her from moving, “Get off me!” Leyla yells fighting against her father’s hold.

“No one could’ve survived that!” Dagur tells her.

Leyla continues fighting, watching the building in front of her, while Dak and Axel couldn’t move. Which didn’t make sense for either of them, they were the ones who were told to protect the island but now they were frozen only able to watch the building with their chief inside burn. Another boulder is sent towards the building making it collapse completely, taking out any chance of Duggard’s survival.

Ivar was standing in front of one of the cells on his ship, looking at the person inside. Duggard was alone standing in the back of the cell, staring at the man.

“Hmm.” Ivar mutters, “Nothing to say?”

“Nope.” Duggard answers.

“You’re not even wondering why I took you?” Ivar asks.

“If I had to guess you're getting revenge on the twins.” Duggard answers.

“Ding ding ding!” Ivar yells, “It’s time for them to feel the grief I felt because of their parents.”

“Wait what?” Duggard asks, not getting a response watching the man walk away from the cell door, “What are you talking about!”

"You'll find out soon enough." Ivar laughs walking away from the cell.

Chapter 9: Aftermath

Summary:

part one of the aftermath of the attack on Huttsgalor and Duggard's "Death"

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Huttsgalor was in a state of ruin, physically and mentally.

Most of the people were in shock from the events of the earlier day, no one really knew what to do. Their chief was gone, what really were they meant to do. One of the first tasks chosen by the village's elders was picking an acting chief for however long they needed it. Usually in an event like this the role would be passed down to the oldest child of the chief and/or someone in their family if nothing else. The only problem was that Duggard had no biological children, and all his family lived hours away from Huttsgalor.

Now the only options that the elders could find were the twins, they were technically Duggard’s children legally. None of them saw the obvious issue in it, “Dak and Leyla can’t do it.” Hannahr cuts in.

She was invited to the meeting by one of the oldest elders, who said something like it would be best to have her there.

“And why do you think that?” One of the elders asks.

“Neither of them will be physically nor emotionally for something like this,” Hannahr explains, “They just watched Duggard die in a building fire.”

“They seem physically fine to me.”

“Everyone knows that they constantly hide injuries.” Hannahr argues, “Knowing them all of the Rescue Riders probably have their fair share.”

“Leyla seems plenty fine to do this.” One of the other elders argues.

“No,” Hannahr responds, “Neither of the twins can do this.”

“I want to hear them say it.” Eino, one of the main elders of the village tells her.

“What?” Hannahr asks.

“If they can’t take over temporally for Duggard,” Eino explains, “I want them to tell me.”

“Sir-” Hannahr starts.

“Go get Dak and Leyla.” Eino interrupts, Hannahr looks at the man confusion visible in her face, “Now!”

Hannahr walked out of the elder’s house, which was currently the temporary meeting place. Dak and Leyla were in the middle of town, helping clean up from the attack the previous day. Most of the people who were running stalls the day before were helping clean up as well including Andora and Zyren. The two of them were helping clean up the town as well, Zyren kept stealing glances over at the RR, none of them were talking and they all looked exhausted.

“Hey, mom,” Zyren starts, getting his mother’s attention, “I’m going to talk with Ley really quickly.”

“Okay, Zy.” Andora responds.

Zyren runs over to where the Rescue Riders were all working, Leyla was taking a crate of materials they found towards the ruins of the great hall. “Ley!” Zyren calls, running up to her.

“Oh, hi Zyren.” Leyla mutters, as she continues walking.

“Hey, are you okay?” Zyren asks, walking next to her

“Yep, I’m fine.” Leyla answers, placing the crate down in front of the great hall.

“Are you sure?” Zyren asks, getting in front of her to be able to look her in the eyes, “I know you and Dak were really close with Duggard.”

“There’s no point in crying about it.” Leyla responds, “H-he’s gone, and there’s nothing I could’ve done to stop it.”

“Ley-” Zyren starts.

“Dak, Leyla!” Hannahr calls, “The elders want to see you.”

“Got it,” Leyla responds, turning back to Zyren, “We can talk more later.”

Leyla met up with Dak and the two of them walked towards the elders house with Hannahr not far in front of them.

“Did you sleep last night?” Leyla asks.

“Nope,” Dak answers, “Every time I close my eyes I see it.”

“Yeah,” Leyla mutters.

“What do you think the elders want to see us for?” Dak asks, changing the subject.

“I don’t know.” Leyla responds, the elder house that was being used as a meeting place was one of the biggest in town. All of the village elders were sitting in the dining room of the house,

“Ah the Rescue Riders finally greet us with their presence!” Eino greets, turning to Hannahr, “You’re excused.”

“What?” Hannahr asks, “I’m not leaving.”

“This is an important discussion; we don’t want your influence ruining the rescue rider’s decision.” Eino explains.

“Hannahr stays.” Dak cuts in.

“This is an import-”

“I don’t care, Hannahr stays.” Dak cuts him off.

“I agree with Dak.” Leyla adds in.

“If that is what you both wish.” Eino sighs.

“What are we here for?” Leyla asks.

“Are you in a hurry, young lady?” Eino asks.

“Yes.” Leyla answers, “People are injured, and the town is in a state of ruin so excuse me for not wanting to talk with a bunch of old people who aren’t even helping!”

“You watch your tongue!” Eino yells at her, “This is no way to talk to you elders!”

“If you don’t have anything important to talk to us about, we are leaving.” Dak tells the elders, stepping in front of Leyla

“One of you has to take over for Duggard.” Eino explains.

“What?” Dak asks.

“We need a temporary chief, and you two are the first options.” Eino explains.

“Well, find a second option.” Leyla tells him, “Neither of us are doing it.”

“This is an amazing opportunity.” Eino explains, “You should really think about this choice.”

“I assure you; this is our choice.” Dak responds, grabbing Leyla’s arm pulling her out of the meeting.

“You heard them,” Hannahr tells the man, following the twins out.

“Those assholes.” Leyla mutters, walking out of the building.

“What happened?” Axel asks, him and Finn were waiting near the building for the twins.

“The elders wanted one of us to take over for Duggard.” Dak explains.

“That’s stupid.” Finn mutters, looking around, “I’m going to go find my mom and see if she can help in any way.”

“Thanks Finn.” Dak responds, watching Finn run off to find his mother.

“Did either of you punch any of the elders?” Axel asks, out of the blue.

“No,” Leyla answers,

“I really wanted to.” Dak cuts in

“You should’ve.” Axel mutters, “Who do you think is their next option?”

“Anyone that has a working thought process would work great.” Dak mutters.

“So, anyone that isn’t from Huttsgalor?” Leyla chuckles.

“Leyla-” Axel starts, “Actually you have a point.”

Hannahr left the Rescue Riders to their discussion, she went to find someone who could hopefully help them. The dragon riders should still be on the island somewhere. They had been helping clean up the island and giving first aid to anyone who needed it, so Hannahr thought hopefully they could give some advice with the chief situation.

The dragon riders were all at the docks helping clean up the mess left by the dragon hunters, Hannahr was walking towards them being able to hear their conversation.

“I wonder how the twins are doing?” Heather says.

“They haven’t really talked.” Hiccup adds in, “At least that I’ve heard.”

“I’ve seen them in the town, they’re helping clean up.” Snotlout tells the group.

“They take after Dagur I suppose.” Astrid mutters.

“What do you mean by that?” Dagur asks.

“You ignore your problems.” Mala responds.

“No, I don't.” Dagur argues.

“Sure.” Mala mutters.

“Excuse me.” Hannahr starts.

“Hello, Hannahr.” Hiccup greets

“I need your help with something.” Hannahr starts.

“What is it?” Astrid asks.

“I just got out of a meeting with the elders, and they wanted either Dak or Leyla to take over-”

“They’re twelve.” Mala cuts in, “Why would they take over?”

“Because they were Duggard’s adopted children,” Hannahr answers, “So either Dak or Leyla would take over at least in their eyes.”

“So, what do you need help with?” Hiccup asks.

“Finding a suitable replacement for Duggard.” Hannahr answers, “Please if you can.”

“Of course.” Hiccup responds, looking at the others, “They’ve got this covered, we can start talking about it.”

“Thank you.” Hannahr sighs, walking with the chief.

“I know chiefing can start young.” Erit starts, “But twelve?”

“It’s ridiculous.” Dagur mutters.

“You started young.” Mala responds.

“So did you.” Dagur argues, “And it sucks, no child should have to do that.”

“I know.” Mala sighs.

Zephyr, Nuffink, and Halley were overhearing the conversation, they were helping clean up as well. Each of them was holding a crate taking it towards the great hall.

“Do either of you know how many people got hurt in the attack?” Nuffink asks.

“No, mum wouldn’t tell me.” Halley answers, “But if I could guess it was probably a lot, Uncle Throk has been helping people sense last night.”

“Mrs. Mala was up late too.” Zephyr adds in, “I heard when they got back to the boat last night.”

“Why were you up late?” Nuffink asks.

“You were too, don’t even try to lie.” Zephyr argues, “There was no sleeping after what happened.”

“You’re not wrong.” Nuffink sighs.

They were placing the crates down in front of the great hall, the three of them turn to go find their parents but Halley runs into someone.

“Shoot, sorry.” Halley apologized stumbling back.

“No I’m sorry, that was my fault.” Finn responds, looking at her, “You’re still here?”

“Yeah why?” Halley asks.

“I just expected you to return home after what happened yesterday.” Finn responds.

“No, we’ve been helping clean up most of the day actually.” Halley explains, “And we can’t leave until we-”

“You what?” Finn asks.

“Uhhh.” Halley draws, looking around the dragon riders were far enough away that they couldn’t hear, and Dak and Leyla were still having their own discussion not listening, “If I tell you, you can’t tell anyone.”

“What is it?” Finn asks.

“Promise me you won’t tell anyone.” Halley responds.

“I promise.” Finn assures.

“Dak and Leyla’s parents are alive.” Nuffink cuts in.

“Nuff!” Zephyr scolds.

“What?” Finn whispers, “How do you know, what proof do you have?”

Halley points over Finn’s shoulder at Dagur and Mala, “They are their parents.”

Finn turns looking at the adults, the two of them do resemble the twins or the twins resemble them  “How do you know? Dak and Leyla’s parents are supposed to be dead.”

Halley pulls the pendent out of her pocket, handing it to the boy, “This is Dak’s.”

“My mother gave that to him.” Halley tells Finn, “She gave Leyla’s hers as well.”

“But-” Finn starts.

“The two crests are, the defenders of the wing and Berserkers.” Halley explains, “And those,” she points at the three runes, “Stand for Dak’s full name.”

“You’re serious?” Finn asks, looking the pendent over.

“Yes.” Halley responds, “Dak and Leyla are Dagur the Deranged and Queen Mala’s missing children.

It was sunset, the town was starting to look better than it was before. Zyren and his mother returned back to their island with some other traders. Most of the Rescue Riders were still working in the town, even with it getting later. Dagur was sitting with the rest of the dragon riders in the town, the three children were taking a break from cleaning talking with Finn. Dak and Axel were on one side of the town, while Leyla was on the other side. She was standing in front of the Great Hall holding a crate, staring at the building.

“Go talk to her.” Mala tells him.

“I think if you-” Dagur starts.

“No,” Mala interrupts, “It has to be you.”

“Okay,” Dagur sighs, walking towards his daughter leaving the dragon riders behind him, he pauses behind her unsure of what to do.

Leyla felt the presence of the Berserker behind her guessing on who it was, “Magnus, I swear if you have any complaints take them up with Hannahr I don’t have the energy.”

“Wrong person.” Dagur responds, “That Magnus does seem like a piece of work though so I can’t blame you for that.”

“Shit sorry,” Leyla sighs, turning to face the man.

“It’s understandable.” Dagur assures.

“We should’ve listened to you.” Leyla mutters, looking back over at the building, “If we did this never would’ve happened.”

“Hey that’s not-”

“It is.” Leyla cuts in, “They were after us, you warned us and we didn’t listen and now Duggard is-”

“I know.” Dagur mutters, “Does Dak believe what you are saying?”

“Well, no.” Leyla answers,

“Have you ever told him this?” Dagur asks her.

“Again, no.” Leyla mutters, looking away from the mans eyes.

“Hey.” Dagur starts, kneeling down to Leyla’s level, “This isn’t your fault.”

“But-”

“No.” Dagur interrupts, “This still would’ve happened if you and Dak left the island, nothing we could’ve done wouldn't have stopped it. Ivar was already almost to the island by the time we were talking, which means the hunters and the attack still would’ve happened, okay?”

“Okay,” Leyla mutters.

“This isn’t your fault,” Dagur tells her, resting his hands on her shoulders.

“Okay,” Leyla mutters again.

“Repeat what I said.” Dagur responds.

“This isn’t my fault,” Leyla repeats.

“Now say it like you mean it.” Dagur tells her.

“This isn’t my fault.” Leyla says louder.

“Now, do you want a hug?” Dagur asks, Leyla doesn’t answer, only nodding slightly, allowing the older man to hug her.

“This isn’t my fault.” Leyla mutters to herself this time.

Notes:

Haha, I love making Leyla blame herself when something bad happens

I really went all out for the angst in this chapter, I did warn you all about how the angst was going to get worse so you all can't get mad at me

Chapter Text

The sun had set over the town, most of the dragon riders had returned to their ship excluding Hiccup who was still helping Hannahr. Zephyr, Nuffink, and Astrid were all in one of the rooms in the bottom part of the ship.

“Mom,” Nuffink starts, “When’s dad coming back?”

“Soon, hopefully.” Astrid responds, sitting on the bed next to her son. Zephyr was across the room, reading a book listening to the conversion.

“What is he doing?” Nuffink asks.

“Still helping Hannahr, find someone to take over temporarily for Duggard.” Astrid explains.

“Why can’t Hannahr do it?” Zephyr asks.

“What do you mean, Zeph?” Astrid responds.

“Well she basically already took over for him, with the elders and she’s been making sure the village isn’t turning into chaos.” Zephyr responds.

“Hmm,” Astrid mutters, looking towards her son who was falling asleep, “I’ll bring it up to him.”

“Thanks, mum.” Zephyr responds, watching her mother leave.

Astrid walks out to the deck of the ship, the rest of the dragon riders were there. Dragons were lying around, sleeping while their riders talked quietly. Heather had her daughter asleep in her arms, Halley fell asleep a while before.

“Hey Astrid.” Heather greets, “Are the two asleep.”

“Nuffink is.” Astrid responds, taking a seat next to Heather.

“Hiccup still helping Hannahr?” Eret asks.

“Yep.” Astrid responds,

“This is ridiculous.” Snotlout complains,

“What now, Snothat?” Dagur asks.

“We came here to get answers, but now we have more questions.” Snotlout explains.

“You always have questions.” Fishlegs argues, the argument continues between the two until Dagur tells the to shut up. Mala and Throk were both still helping in town, Huttsgalor only had one healer who was hurt in the attack. Unable to help anyone.

Huttsgalor was beginning to look better, the stalls were all taken down revealing the mess of the great hall. The fire was put out a while ago, the ash was still floating up. The only thing that survived was the statue sitting in front of the hall.

Up at the Roost a fire was lighting up the yard, three of the Rescue Riders were sitting outside with their dragons. Finn was at home with his mom, though he spent most of the day with the group.

None of them were talking, just eating, quietly. Hannahr brought the three food, with the help of Finn’s mother.

“What now?” Axel asks, interrupting the silence.

“No idea.” Leyla responds.

“We finish what we started.” Dak answers, “It’s what Duggard would’ve wanted, if he saw what was happening now he’s sick Marena on us.”

“No doubt about that.” Leyla chuckles, “How are we going to find them.”

“That’s for you to find out.” Dak responds, “I never agreed to make the whole plan.”

“Fine,” Leyla chuckles.

“We’ll work on it in the morning.” Axel suggests the three of them move to start cleaning up. When Leyla’s eyes land on the ships, in the docks. Most of them had either Huttsgalor crest, or ones from nearby islands. Two ships stuck out one had the Berk crest and the other had a crest that was very familiar to the girl “Hm,”

“What is it, Ley?” Axel asks.

“That ship's crest,” Leyla responds, “It looks so familiar.”

Axel and Dak look towards the ships, seeing the crest on the ship’s sails.

“I know, I’ve seen that crest before.” Dak explains, running over to where his sister's bag was sitting.

“Dak what are you doing?” Leyla asks, Dak doesn’t answer, running back over with his sister's diary in his hands. “See!”

Dak holds the book up, next to the ship, comparing the symbols, “Isn’t that they symbol on you two’s pendants as well.”

“Yeah.” Leyla conforms, grabbing her book back, “but what does it mean?”

“Wasn’t that man with them?” Dak asks.

“I think so.” Leyla responds, “And he knew something about our parents.”

“He did!” Dak remembers, looking out towards the ship.

“We need to talk with him, as soon as possible.” Leyla responds.

“I heard the chief of Berk, saying something about them staying all week.” Axel adds in.

“We’ll talk to him tomorrow.” Leyla assures, the three of them walked into the Roost with their dragons going to their separate rooms, falling asleep quickly from the actions of the day.

The sun was rising revealing a ship sailing through the waters, Ivar and his men were sailing towards an island covered in fog, “Sir.”

“What?” Ivar complains looking towards the voice.

“Why exactly are we sailing towards this island,”

“This island has some extremely powerful materials,” Ivar explains.

“Power materials that do what?”

“Ugh, do I have to explain everything?” Ivar asks.

“I was just asking a question, this seems like a waste of time.”

“The materials on this island have the ability to take away dragon powers.” Ivar explains

“That's incredible.”

“I know,” Ivar responds

“How did you find out about them?”

“That’s none of your concern.” Ivar responds, “All you need to know is that they work.”

“But what about the dragon root arrows? These seem to work fine, against the dragons.”

“That was my fathers thing, using something to make the dragons not be able to fly. The dragon riders know how to avoid it, with these materials the dragons will have no way of attack. Completely helpless, there’s nothing they can do to avoid it either.”

Ivar walks away ignoring any more comments from the hunter, walking below the deck. It was filled with mostly dragons excluding the one Chief. “How you doing?” Ivar greets.

“Are you finally going to tell me why I’m here?” Duggard asks.

“No!” Ivar laughs, “Why would I ever do that?”

“You’re right, no idea I even asked, it’s not like you could ever be a normal person.” Duggard mutters.

“Bite your tongue!” Ivar screams, “I could easily sail back towards Huttsgalor, teach those Rescue Riders more of a lesson.”

“You wouldn’t.” Duggard responds.

“Hmm good point,” Ivar laughs, “If I did that, my plan wouldn’t work, but those Rescue Riders will definitely get all they deserve.”

“What do you mean!” Duggard shouts.

“You’ll see.” Ivar laughs, walking away from the cell back up to the dock of the ship.

The island was covered in clear rocks, a huge cave opening could be seen even from how far back they were. Some trees were near the opening blocking it off more.

They dock the ship, stepping food on the island, Ivar reaches a hand out to touch the cold feeling of the crystals. They were almost as tall as the trees near them. He assumed that the crystals were taking some of the nutrients from the soil, which made them grow more.

“Are these the materials you need?”

“No.” Ivar responds, whipping around to face the hunters, “The ones we need will be deeper in the cave.”

“How much deeper?”

“You’ll know when you see them.” Ivar explains, the group of them walk into the caves. All of them had gear for mining the materials, as they got farther into the cave, multi boars attempted to attack. But were taken down easily but Ivar and his men.

The hunters past through a cave of blue crystals, of varying sizes “Are these the materials.”

“Nope.” Ivar responds, farther in.

“Sir, this seems like you're chasing an old wives tail.”

“If you continue doubting me, you won’t see a wife.” Ivar threatens.

“I wasn’t-”

“Sure.” Ivar responds, the rest of the journey through the caves was silent, no one having the guts to talk back to Ivar again. More different colored crystals filled the cavern, but they continued. Until they reached the cavern filled with bright red crystals, light came from a hole in the ceiling lighting up the room more.

“These ones.” Ivar explains, grabbing a pick ax chipping a piece of the crystal off the wall, “are the ones we need.”

The next morning in Huttsgalor was chaotic, everyone was attempting to get back to their daily work but without Duggard keeping the peace it was hard. Magnus found his way into town and started attempting to become the boss. Which was quickly shot down by Hannahr, the rescue riders were in town helping keep the pease well most of them. Finn was looking around, attempting to find the dragon riders or well their children.

After a while Finn’s eyes finally land on the three children, they were near the docks talking to each other. Finn looks around, seeing that the other Rescue Riders weren’t looking, so he took his chance rushing over to the three.

“Oh hey Finn.” Halley greets.

“Hi,” Finn responds,

“Have you told them?” Zephyr asks.

“No!” Finn denies, “You said to keep it a secret, by the way this is the hardest secret ever to keep.”

“They’ll tell them soon.” Nuffink assures, “Probably.”

“Probably!?” Finn shouts, “At this point I’ll never talk to Dak and Leyla again.”

“Don’t be so dramatic.” Halley responds, “You won’t have to ignore them forever, you don’t have to ignore them at all.”

“Says you.” Finn responds, looking around to see Dak and Leyla were looking over at him, “I gotta go.”

“Good luck!” Nuffink says after Finn.

Finn walks over to the three teens, who were all taking a break for a moment,

“Hey Finny.”  Leyla greets.

“Hi.”

The four of them talk for a few minutes, Finn kept looking back periodically at the three dragon riders kids. Which Dak quickly caught up on.

“You have something important to be?” Dak asks, randomly.

“N-no.” Finn assures, “Nowhere important.”

“You keep looking back, it seems like you need to go somewhere.” Dak explains.

“I-i’m not.” Finn assures.

“It’s fine Finn,” Dak chuckles, “I’m just messin with you.”

“Thank odin.” Finn mutters, glancing back at the three dragon riders behind them again.

Ivar was back at his camp, crates of crystals surrounding him. The man was sitting at a desk, with a crystal sitting in front of him. He was chipping away at it, slowly carving it into an arrow head.

The red crystal was sharper than normal arrow heads, most crystals were. Iron chips more easily making it more difficult to attack anything more.

The Red crystals were much more effective as well, Ivar tested multiple of his first attempts with normal clear crystals on training dummies, all of them pierced through much easier than just plain iron.

It was time consuming to make the arrow heads, on the other hand. Multiple hunters were helping carve the arrow head as well, attacking them to the wooden arrows bases.

Ivar slowly was carving the crystal down, making it look more and more like a proper arrow head. The crates filled with crystals were all around the room, an open notebook was sitting in front of him. With a terror mail sitting on the page.

Ivar, the materials you’ve been hunting are on an island near Huttsgalor.

You’ll know it when you see it, bright red crystals will fill the cavern. No dragon is immune to them, they’ll work perfect to go with the next part of you plan. I’ll keep searching for the Hidden World, and send word when I find it.

Your friend, Waldondo

Ivar finishes carving the crystal into an arrow head, he grabs one of the wooden bases using twine to attach the tip securely. After Ivar was done, he held it up in front of the sun allowing it to project through.

“Perfect.” Ivar says in aw, “Now all we need to do is test it.”

The dragon riders find out where Ivar is hiding, and Dak and Leyla find out some information

Chapter Text

It’s been a full week since the attack, and Huttsgalor was officially up and running again. Zephyr’s idea of Hannahr being the chief temporarily or permanently was working great. Even if Hannahr didn’t want to do it at first.

“Me?” Hannahr laughs, “Being the chief, now you're messin with me.”

“It’s a great idea,” Leyla interrupts, “You’ve taken over for Du- him plenty of times.”

“That was temporary.” Hannahr argues, “Who knows how long this would last.”

“Hannahr.” Dak groans, “You won’t be alone, you’ll have us, and like half of Huttsgalor to help you.”

“I still don’t like it.” Hannahr starts.

“But-” Hiccup starts.

“I’ll do it.” Hannahr answers, in response she gets tackled in a hug from Dak.

Neither Dak or Leyla had gotten a chance to talk to the dragon riders, all of them had been busy most of the week. It was the last day the dragon riders were going to be on the island, so the twins knew they had to take a chance. Dagur and Mala were in town talking with Hannhr, about something neither of the twins could hear. As the twins near Hannahr stopped talking, looking between the four.

“Is something wrong?” Mala asks, at Hannahr’s silence.

“Uh- no.” Hannahr responds, “But I think you four need to talk, so ima go.”

The newly appointed chief walks away quickly leaving the four alone, to hopefully talk.

“I told you, you weren’t getting off this island before explaining.” Leyla tells Dagur.

“You did.” Dagur responds.

“So start explaining.” Dak tells the man.

“To make an extremely long story short-” Dagur starts.

“We are your parents.” Mala cuts in.

“What-” Dak asks.

“Y-you're kidding right?” Leyla asks.

“No.” Mala assures, looking towards the pendant clipped to the younger girl's bag, “Good to see both of you still have your pendants.”

Leyla looks down at her bag, pulling the pendant off of it.

“If you are our parents, then what are these crests?” Leyla asks, holding the pendent towards the adults.

Mala carefully grabs the pendent from the girl, flipping it to the side with the Berserker crest, the skrill  “This is the Berserker crest, your father used to be the chief of the island.”

“Used too?” Dak asks.

“In a way I retired, in another way I became king of another island.” Dagur explains.

“So are you related to the chief of Berserker Island?” Dak asks.

“Heather is my sister.” Dagur explains.

“What does the other crest mean?” Leyla asks.

Mala flips the pendant again, showing the other crest, it was another dragon but way different from the Skrill, “And this crest is from Caldera Cay, defenders of the wing. That’s the island I’m from, and those.” Mala points down to the three runes.

ᛚᚺᚱ

“Stand for your name.”

“My name?” Leyla asks, “what is my name?”

“Leyla Herleifr Ragnvald” Mala answers, handing back the pendent “your full name.”

“I didn’t know I had a middle name, or even a last name.” Leyla mutters, Mala’s face softens, looking back at Dagur who was standing near.

“What’s my name?” Dak asks.

“Dak Hámundr Ragnvald.” Dagur answers.

“I lost my pendent.” Dak mutters.

“Well- we found it.” Mala assures.

“Really?!” Dak asks, looking at the woman.

“Halley has it.” Dagur explains, “She’s the one who found it as well.

“And Halley is our-” Leyla starts.

“Cousin,” Dak finishes.

“Yep.” Mala responds, “Zephyr and Nuffink are as well.”

“Wait what?” Leyla asks.

“Hiccup is in a way my little brother.” Dagur responds, “So cousins.”

“Cool,” Dak mutters, looking back at Axel and Finn who were watching the interaction from where the great hall was. Finn lets out a sigh, getting the older rider's attention.

“What’s wrong?” Axel asks the boy.

“Nothing,” Finn assures.

“Sure,” Axel responds, turning back to the interactions, “At least those four are finally talking.”

“Why does that matter?” Finn asks, knowing fully well what Axel was meaning.

“We saw something a few nights ago, and Dak and Leyla are finally getting clarity on it.”

“Oh, well at least they’ll finally know,” Finn mutters.

“What do you know?” Axel asks, looking at the younger boy

“Nothing!” Finn assures.

“Finn,”

“I might know what they’re talking about,” Finn answers.

“And that is?” Axel asks, getting no answer as Finn rushes over to the four. “Finn!”

Finn rushes over leaning into the older girls side, “Thank thor.” Finn sighs,

“You knew!” Leyla asks.

“Yep.” Finn responds.

“How-” Dak asks, looking at Finn.

“Knew what!” Axel asks, rushing over standing next to the twins.

“We told him.” Halley interrupts, the three of them had been over hearing the entire conversation and were definitely going to get an ear full from their parents for eavesdropping.

“Told him what?” Axel asks, looking at the kids, “What am I missing.”

“Axel, they are our parents.” Dak explains, gesturing back at Mala and Dagur who were standing nearby.

“Uh- what?” Axel asks, looking between the four  “You’re joking right?”
“Nope.”

“When did this happen?” Axel asks.

“Approximately 12 years ago.” Leyla smirks,

Axel whips around towards her, “Haha you're hilarious.”

Unaware of the group of them, someone was sneaking up to appear behind them, “Not to interrupt this family moment.” Marena starts.

“AH!” Nuffink yelps, falling down at the woman’s sudden appearance.

“Where did you come from?” Zephyr asks, helping her younger brother from the ground.

“That’s Marena for you.” Leyla answers.

“It’s kind of what she does best.” Dak adds in, looking back at the woman, “Anyways, Marena you were saying.”

“I’ve gotten word from a friend,” Marena starts, “They informed me of where the attackers of Huttsgalor are.’

“Where are they?” Leyla asks, basically running towards Marena.

“Sailing towards Dragon Island” Marena answers, watching as both of the twins get a certain look in their eyes. That was unmistakable to Mala, a look she's seen many times, that usually belongs in her husband's eyes.

Dak and Leyla were rushing around, attempting to get all the slbiles they needed. Finn and Axel were explaining what they know to Hannahr, and some of the other adults. Dagur and Mala were watching with the other dragon riders growing increasingly concerned.

“We can’t just let them go,” Throk starts, most of the dragon riders were standing around nearby. The royals explained what was happening to them as well.

“At least by themselves.” Hiccup mutters.

“Didn’t you take down the red death at 15, with the others who just started riding dragons?” Eret asks, “But you're stopping trained dragon riders.”

“Those trained dragon riders are children.” Fishlegs cuts in.

“We need to talk-” Astrid starts.

“There’s no way you’re stopping them.” Marena cuts in, Snotlout jumps up stumbling over one of the crates nearby. Falling down, smacking his head on the ground.

“What the heck!” Snotlout yelps, looking up from the ground. Marena pays no mind turning towards Mala and Dagur.

“We didn’t get to formally be introduced, I’m Marena.”

“I’m Mala, and this is Dagur.”

“Oh I knew that already.” Marena assures, “I already know who all of you are.”

“And that’s definitely not stalkerish.” Tuffnut mutters.

“What do you mean when you say there is no way of stopping them?” Astrid asks, interrupting any other questions.

“Well It’s Dak and Leyla.” Marena answers, knowing fully well that isn’t a proper answer for the group.

“And that matters why?” Eret asks.

“They’ve been taking down hunters since the ripe age of like 8.” Marena explains.

“Uh what-” Hiccup asks.

“Yeah, I didn’t believe them at first but it’s true.” Marena explains, “They’ve also taken down pirates multiple times, and are hated on multiple islands.”

“These kids are way ahead of us.” Snotlout mutters.

“No doubt about that.” Ruffnut adds.

“So we just let them go?” Mala asks.

“I never said let them go alone.” Marena assures, “Just go with them, follow them, anything to make sure the twins don’t do anything stupid.”

“If they do, they get it from their father.” Throk mutters.

“What was that?” Dagur asks him.

“Nothing,” Throk assures.

“Well they aren’t leaving tonight.” Marena tells them.

“How do you know?” Eret asks.

“Duggard’s memorial is tonight.” Marena explains, “There’s no way, they will miss it.”

Huttsgalor was lit up with lanterns, some were hanging on ropes around the town and some were sitting on tables. The tables were overfilled with the lanterns that were going to be sent into the sky. A common tradition of Huttsgalor is lighting lanterns, to lead the dead to the afterlife. Most of the lanterns were covered in drawings done by the younger people of Huttsgalor. Some of the lanterns were drawn on by the Rescue Riders and some by the children of the dragon riders. It was Hannahr’s idea, knowing it's something Duggard would’ve loved to see.

The rescue riders were sitting on the stairs in front of the ruins of the great hall, watching as the lanterns filled the sky.

“I will say, Duggard would’ve loved this.” Dak mutters, leaning against the steps.

“Definitely.” Leyla responds.

“Are you guys sure it’s the best idea to go after this guy?” Axel asks, after the group sit in silence for a while.

“Why wouldn’t we? He killed Duggard.” Dak responds, “He deserves everything that he’s going to get.”

“Dak, that's not healthy thinking.” Finn tells the man, looking towards Leyla, “Right?”

“Nope, Dak has a point.” Leyla responds.

“Oh Thor.” Axel sighs, “Do we at least have a plan?”

“I’m working on it.” Leyla assures, “We know he’s sailing towards Dragon Island, so there has to be a reason for it.”

“Is it just going to be us four?” Dak asks, looking towards the others.

“Yeah-” Leyla starts.

“No.” Hiccup cuts in.

The rescue riders look over at the dragon riders who were overhearing the conversation, Zephyr, Halley, and Nuffink were still watching the lanterns unaware of the conversation happening.

“What do you mean no?” Dak asks.

“We’re not letting four children go take on dragon hunters-.” Dagur starts.

“We’ve done it plenty of times.” Dak argues.

“Let me finish.” Dagur responds, “We aren’t letting you four go, alone.”

“What exactly do you mean alone?” Axel asks.

“We are allowing you to go, as long as we go with you.” Mala explains, Dak and Leyla look at each other with annoyed looks, before turning back to their mother.

“We’ve done stuff like this a million times, without adult supervision.” Dak argues, “I promise you we don’t need to be watched.”

“Too bad, it’s either that or none of you are going.” Dagur explains.

“Well they really just jumped into the parental rolls.” Axel mutters, looking back at the twins who were both thinking, “It’s better than nothing, you two.”

“Fine,” Leyla sighs,

“Great, we'll leave in the morning.” Snotlout tells them, from where he was behind the dragon riders.

“We?” Leyla asks, looking at the dragon riders behind her parents “And uh- how are you guys getting there cause dragons are kind of needed right now.”

“She has a point.” Mala mutters.

“We’ll go with them, and the rest of you can stay here making sure Huttsgalor is still running.” Heather suggests.

“Why do we get the boring task?” Ruffnut asks.

“Because we don’t have dragons,” Eret responds.

“Boring.” Tuffnut huffs, crossing his arms over his chest.

“Aw- Too bad.” Leyla responds, “This is a fun thing to do, we are legitimately going after a murder.”

“Way more fun than taking care of the town.” Tuffnut argues.

“Can I hurt him?” Dak asks.

“No.” Axel responds.

“Now that’s what is really boring.” Leyla huffs.

“They’re definitely Dagur’s.” Fishlegs chuckles, the next morning was basically the definition of chaos. The four Rescue Riders were rushing around preparing, Heather was helping them. Zephyr, Nuffink, and Halley were sitting near the docks watching the town. Most of the dragons were helping wherever they were needed, well except The Nut twins who were still sulking about getting the boring task. So they were tasked to make sure the three children sneak with them.

“So- do you know where they’re going?” Nuffink asks, randomly to the Nuts.

“Dragon Island.” Ruffnut answers, “While we have to clean the town,”

“The town is already clean.” Halley responds, “You guys are actually making sure the town doesn’t get attacked again.”

“And how do you know that?” Tuffnut asks.

“I heard mom talking about it earlier.” Halley responds, “They were planning this morning.”

“And most of the night.” Zephyr adds, “You guys don’t plan quietly.”

“It’s more like a giant argument than anything else.” Nuffink explains, “Mainly Uncle Dag and Aunt Mala having two different ideas.”

“Oh yeah-” Halley laughs, “They love each other but when they argue it’s insane, they start planning each other's murders until they make up.”

“Who's planning people’s murders?” Finn asks.

“Dagur and Mala are planning each other's.” Halley explains, “It’s kind of their thing, and it can get really funny.”

“Hm… Reminds me of Dak and Leyla.” Finn chuckles, “They barely argue but when they do, Axel thinks about selling tickets every time. It’s really entertaining.”

“Finn!” Axel calls, getting the younger boy’s attention.

“One second!” Finn yells in response, looking back at the group “Well I’ll be back later.”

“Hopefully.” Nuffink mutters.

Zephyr smacks her brother over the head, forcing his helmet to fall forward covering his eyes. “What was that for?” Nuffink asks, pulling his helmet back up.

“You know exactly what,” Zephyr responds, saying their goodbyes allowing Finn to run over where the three other Rescue Riders were waiting.

The three others were heavily prepared, as were the adults. Most of their weapons were attached to their dragon’s saddles. Sluether and Windshear were both prepared for the flight, even on dragons its a far flight so they were leaving at sunset to be at Dragon Island by the next sunrise.

Dagur and Heather were talking with the other dragon riders, preparing for the future fight. “Are we sure this is the best idea?” Fishlegs asks, looking at the others.

“Revenge is never the correct option.” Hiccup sighs, “But what can we do about it, they already have their minds set on going after Ivar.”

“How did your dad stop you from going after Viggo?” Heather asks, remembering how they were as teens.

“He told me that the feeling of revenge is great in the beginning, but its short lived the violence that comes from the revenge on the other hand only grows more and more.” Hiccup quotes. “And if Ivar is anything like his successors, any type of revenge will be returned tenfold.”

“So are we going to stop them?” Eret asks.

“Nope.” Dagur responds, “Like Marena said they're going either way, so it’s better to have some type of adult with them.”

“And if this comes back even worse?” Eret asks.

“Then we’ll deal with it.” Mala assures, looking over at the Rescue Riders, “This is something they need to see.”

The seven dragons were racing through the night, Dak and Leyla were basically racing each other to be in front. While the rest of the dragons were farther behind, Heather was flying near her brother and Mala.

“We are sure this is the best idea right?” Heather asks quietly.

“Nope.” Dagur responds, “But it’s all we got.”

Dragon Island hadn’t changed, old ships were wrecked on beaches with different island’s crests sewn into them. All of the dragon riders knew the island well, as it was the island most of their training took place on. Strangely you could hear dragons all around but none were seen. The sun was slowly rising allowing the team of dragon riders to clearly see the island.

“Weird.” Heather mutters, “Where are all the dragons? This place is usually crawling with them, it’s called Dragon Island for a reason.”

“I would bet anything Ivar has something behind this.” Leyla huffs.

“No doubt about that.” Axel agrees.

They flew around the island until they found Ivar’s ships, dozens of ships were sailing away from the island roars from dragons echoing throughout the air.

“I guess that’s why there’s no dragons around.” Dak guess, pointing at the ships.

“Definitely.” Finn mutters.

The land down on a sea stack, Heather was looking at the ships with a telescope, a gift from Hiccup. Ivar’s ships were filled to the brim with hundreds of men, barrels full of arrows covered the deck. “Ivar definitely planned for everything.” Heather mutters.

“He is a Grimborn.” Dagur mutters, looking back towards the group, “What now?”

“We free the dragons, assess everything, and then-” Leyla starts.

“We aren’t here for revenge.” Mala cuts in, “and this is not the time to capture Ivar.”

“Why not?” Dak asks.

“If we take Ivar off the board, one of the most brutal dragon hunters would be taken care of.” Leyla explains.

“And then what happens after we have him? Hope none of his allies come to rescue him? Hope his men don’t do anything? Getting Ivar isn’t what we need right now.” Dagur explains,

“He killed an innocent man.” Leyla ensisits.

“And he’ll get his karma for that,” Mala assures, setting a hand on her daughters shoulder, “but now all that matter is making sure those dragons will be safe.”

“Alright.” Dak mutters, “The dragons first.”

Notes:

Dak and Leyla’s next arc is heavily inspired by the Last of us season 2, I’ve been binging the show and the game. So be prepared. I'm really excited to write it

Oh, and some extra lore is that Dagur took Mala’s last name because it's something important in Defenders of the wing traditions

Anyways as always, I extremely appreciate comments and kudos when I receive them, I love receiving them as well so if you have any ideas or just something to say about this chapter comment them

Chapter Text

The dragon riders were left on Huttsgalor, Hiccup and Astrid were sitting with the other watching the three children. Halley was left with them, obviously her mother wasn’t going to let her join. “This sucks.” Snotlout sighs, “They get to go fight dragon hunters while we’re stuck here.”

“Agreed.” Tuffnut sighs.

“This is all we can do.” Ruffnut mutters, “Too bad all the dragons are still in the Hidden world.”

“Can’t the dragons come back now?” Snotlout asks.

“Why would you ask that?” Hiccup asks, “We all know the answer.”

“Because, Berserker Island, Defenders of the Wing, and more all still have their dragons.” Tuffnut responds, “We are the only ones who can’t have ours.”

“They do have a point, Hiccup.” Fishlegs starts, “The dragons are in no less danger in the hidden world, and in the few days of being here we’ve seen dozens of dragons flying around.”

“Hmm,” Hiccup mutters, looking out towards the sea where the Hidden World’s entrance hides. Most of the dragons disperse leaving the Berk’s rulers alone at the docks.

“What are you thinking?” Astrid asks, settling a hand on her husband’s shoulder.

“What if they’re right?” Hiccup asks, “The twins have been living with dragons their entire lives, with little to no difficulties.”

“You don’t know that part for sure.” Astrid argues.

“Okay, correction, they've lived for years without their dragons getting caught and sold.”

“You have a point.” Astrid mutters,

“They had a point.” Hiccup responds, “For once, Snotlout was thinking logically.”

“I didn’t think he could do that.” Astrid chuckles.

“Me either.’

The sun was rising over the island, dragon calls echoed throughout the island making the dragon hunters prepare their arrows. The ships had been circling preparing to attack any dragons they’d see, Ivar was standing on the top of the ship. Looking around, for the dragons who wouldn’t show.

“Sir!”

“What now?” Ivar grumbles looking down at the hunter calling for him.

“We’ve seen multiple dragons flying around on the east side of the island.” The hunter explains.

“Perfect.” Ivar mutters,

“Should we head towards them?”

“No.” Ivar responds, “Not by sailing at least.”

“How exactly then?”

“The woods,” Ivar answers.

On the east side of the island, the dragon riders were surveying the island from a sea stack. It had been hours since they had arrived, Ivar hadn’t made any moves, well that they could see.

“What are they planning?” Dagur asks, as another ship circling the island.

“Ivar has to have some type of plan.” Heather responds.

“If he’s anything like his uncle, we should be concerned.” Mala mutters, looking back at the Rescue Riders. They four of them were on another sea stack, not far from the three and their dragons.

“This is so boring.” Finn mutters.

“I don’t get why we can’t just attack them,” Dak adds in, “They’re right there, if those three weren’t here this would be dealt with already.”

“Dak-” Axel starts, “They’re your family, they just want to protect you and Leyla.”

“I- We don’t even know them.” Dak argues, “It doesn’t count.”

“That’s not how genetics work.” Axel responds,

“You can’t say shit, Axel.” Leyla huffs.

“We aren’t talking about my family right now.” Axel answers, “Have you ever had a conversation with your parents, since you found out other than the memorial.”

“No, it's too weird.” Leyla responds, “These random people just came to our island, and started talking about how they are our family, it’s very strange.”

“Well-”

“They don’t know anything about us.” Dak continues, looking over at the adults.

“They know your full names.” Finn cuts in, “And you guys didn’t even know that.”

“Thank you, Finn!” Axel sighs,

“Whose side are you on?” Dak asks the boy.

“No ones, I’m just saying.” Finn responds,

“Sure.” Dak mumbles.

“You two need to realize that, they didn’t want you to be taken.” Axel sighs, “You barely know them, Leyla you literally carry your mother’s notebook everywhere, and now, she's right there!” he gestures over at the three adults,
“And you’re scared to talk to her!”

“I’m not scared.” Leyla denies.

“Sure you're not.” Axel responds, looking over at Dak, “And you Dak, you’ve told me many times about how you wish you knew where you came from, to know what the runes mean on your pendent. And you can get all the answers now, but you won’t. You’re just as scared as Leyla.”

“I am not!” Dak yelps.

“I’m not taking any arguments.” Axel cuts in, “And I know it’s hard for you two, to let new people in. but you two have to at least try, they are your family, they’re reaching out. Just accept it or try to at least or”

“Or what?” Leyla asks.

“Or I'll tell everyone, including Zyren , your most embarrassing stories you’ve told me over the years.”

“No you won’t.” Leyla argues.

“You really want to test that, Leyla?” Axel asks.

“Yeah, definitely not.” Leyla huffs.

“Dak?”

“Fine,”

“Thank you.”

Ivar and his men were making their way through the vast forest on dragon island, the island was basically deserted which was the strangest part about the fact of the dragon calls that morning.

“How is this place so deserted, with all the dragon calls this morning?”

“They’re in hiding.” Ivar responds, holding his bow and arrow close. It was the only thing he had from his father, Viggo had given it to him before sending him away to his mother’s relatives. He was the only one with the red crystal arrows in his possession.

The rest of the hunters were using dragon root arrows, Ivar kept all of the crystal arrows for himself and his closest advisors.

They were successfully across the island, when they finally saw the dragons “Well there’s the dragons.” Ivar mutters, looking at the riders.

“Yeah with their riders.” A hunter argues.

“Well I’ve already thought of that.” Ivar responds, looking towards the man, “I’ve given plenty of warning about this.” The hunter puts his hands up walking away from the man, Ivar turns away towards the dozen men that were following him.

“Here’s what’s going to happen-”

After a while the Rescue Riders were called over to the same sea stack the three adults were on, the dragons all were watching from the distance. Dak and Leyla were standing near their parents but made no attempt of any type of conversion.

“This is just sad.” Sleuther mutters,

“You’re telling me.” Winger responds.

“Dak and Leyla are terrified of them.” Aggro tells the two older dragons, “Or it seems like it.”

“Wait- why?” Windshear asks.

“Because they haven’t known the comfort of parents since they were little.” Winger answers, looking at the twins.

“There’s definitely a story behind that, but we don’t have time.” Sleuther explains, looking down at the nearing ships that were all heading towards the sea stack. “Hey!”

Sluether’s yell gets the attention of all the riders, he uses one of his three tails to point at the ships. “This can’t be Ivar’s entire plan.” Heather mutters, “Surrounding us? Doesn’t seem like him.”

“Definitely something Rykie would do.” Dagur chuckles.

“Rykie?” Dak asks, looking at the man.

“Ryker Grimborn.” Dagur clarifies, to his son’s confusion.

“He must’ve loved you calling him that.” Leyla mutters.

“Okay, back to this Grimborn.” Mala cuts in, “Ivar has to have a plan, but we need to make sure he doesn’t get or have any dragons.”

“Alright- Dagur and Me will go down taking out the primary weapons on the ships while-” Heather cuts herself off looking at the Rescue Riders, she didn’t know what to call them. Rescue Riders seemed to formal but it’s all she knew, “The twins and friends-”

“Twins and friends?” Finn asks, looking at the twins who were both attempting not to laugh at his reaction

“Okay, Rescue Riders then,” Heather continues, “Will provide air support.”

“Well that’s boring.” Dak grumbles.

“Why do we have to provide air support?” Leyla asks.

“Because I say so.” Heather responds.

“That isn’t an answer.” Leyla argues

“Well too bad, we need to go now.” Heather tells them.

The three adults mount their dragons, flying towards the ships, Dak looks towards his twin who was staring at the ships.

“You got a better plan?” Dak asks.

“I’m working on one.” Leyla answers.

“Shouldn’t we just stick with your aunt's plan?” Finn asks.

“Well her plan is boring.” Leyla answers, mounting her dragon with the others. Axel and Finn both stay up in the air, as Dak and Leyla rush down getting the archer’s attention. Dak continues distracting them, as his twin dives into the water with her dragon.

“That was not the plan.”Mala mutters.

“Did you actually think they’d stick with it?” Dagur asks.

The ships slowly start turning into each other faster than the hunters could stop it. Two of the ships crash into each other sending a loud bang echoing throughout the air. “That’s works.” Heather mutters.

Leyla and Summer resurface, flying up to the other dragon riders, “Two ships down.”

“Nice job, Ley.” Axel compliments.

“Thank you,” Leyla mutters, looking down, “Four more ships.”

“Any more plans?” Finn asks the girl.

“Working on it.” Leyla answers,

Dak flies by with Winger going near his father and Sluether, “Okay what now?” Dagur asks.

“Leyla makes the plans, I just do what she says.” Dak responds, flying ahead of his father, having Winger send a blast towards the ships.

“He takes after you.” Sleuther chuckles.

“I don’t want to hear it.” Dagur mutters, looking down at his dragon as if he understood it. Most of the ships were taken out leaving only two standing, Leyla went down near her twin who was watching Axel and Finn fly around distracting the hunters.

“Where is he?” Dak asks, looking around, “There’s no way Ivar wouldn’t be here.”

“He’s got to have another plan.” Leyla responds, looking around finding no other ships other than the two below them.

Ivar and a couple of his men were in the forest, the man was preparing to fire an arrow at one of the dragons and his aim was set on the swift wing. Much like his father he had studied all types of dragons figuring out their weaknesses and strengths, even the rare dragons his father couldn’t even dream of finding. Ivar waited until the dragon fired, before releasing the arrow. From his research, the swiftwing is most vulnerable after a blast.

Winger’s blast echoed throughout the area, giving Ivar the sign to release the arrow. It went flying through the air hitting the swiftwing in the side, only nearly missing Dak’s leg. Winger yelped at the sudden pain flying down towards a sea stack.

“Where did that come from?” Dak asks, jumping off Winger looking around.

Sleuther flies up giving Mala the opportunity to aid the injured dragon. Mala kneels down looking at the injury, and the arrow. “Looks like the dragon hunters are using dragon root again.”

“What root?” Dak asks.

“It’s a plant that affects dragons, making it difficult to concentrate or even fly.” Mala explains.

“Oh- I know what that is.” Dak huffs, “Didn’t know it could be made into arrows.”

“I don’t feel the effects of dragon root.” Winger cuts in, “It’s just eerily familiar.”

Mala looks up at her son, “What did he say?”

“He says he doesn’t feel the effects of dragon root and that it’s a strangely familiar feeling.” Dak translates.

“That’s incredible.” Mala mutters,

“That my dragon got shot?” Dak asks.

“Is that what you think I meant?”

“No,” Dak laughs.

As the two were attempting to figure out what was happening with Winger, the rest of the dragon riders were still attempting to take down the two remaining ship. Which happened to be the most heavily fortified, more hunters on and weapons covered the decks.

“These ships are definitely more protected,” Finn observes.

“I wonder why?” Axel asks.

“It’s definitely part of Ivar’s plan.” Heather responds, “But was is it?”

“The arrow Winger was shot with didn’t come from the ships.” Leyla observes, looking out the forest. “Where we were there’s no way that it could’ve come from one of these ships.”

“Then where did it come from?” Axel asks.

“If I had to guess, it came from there.” Leyla answers, pointing out towards the forest.

Ivar had been watching the attack from the forest using a telescope to get a better look, “I didn’t think she’d figure it out that fast.”

“Sir, we need to get out of the forest!” A hunter yells, just loud enough for the hunters in the forest to hear.

“Not quite yet.” Ivar responds, watching the sea stack with the two riders on it.

“What are we waiting for?”

“We have to make sure the arrows work.” Ivar responds, looking away from the man.

“Well the dragon riders are definitely planning on checking out the woods.”

“I’m aware.” Ivar answers, looking away after getting the information he needed, “Let’s go.”

Leyla and Axel were teaming up to take down the last remaining hunter ship. It was the most fortified out of the six, covered in dragon proof metal. “What is this ship on?” Axel asks

“More importantly, who's on this ship?” Leyla asks, her eyes looking towards the forest again.

“Do you think Ivar’s on this ship?” Finn asks, flying close to them.

“No,” Leyla answers, “He is in the woods.”

“How do you know that?” Heather asks.

“Because he isn’t one to risk his own safety, he wasn’t seen on Huttsgalor and he would only be here if these ships were the main part of the plan.” Leyla explains, “And the arrow that shot Winger came from the forest, meaning it’s most likely that there are at least a dozen men hiding.”

“Are we sure she is Dagur’s?” Windshear asks Sleuther.

“Dak is definitely Dagur’s, and they’re twins so probably.” Sleuther answers, “I think so.”

“You two are aware I know everything you’re saying, right?” Leyla asks.

The two dragons quickly spot talking, staring at the younger girl.

“What did they say?” Axel asks.

“I’ll explain later,” Leyla sighs, “but first we need to clear the woods of dragon hunters.”

“Alright, Heather and-” Dagur looks over at Axel, “older blonde child, will finish with the ships while the rest of us clear the woods.”

“Sounds good br-” Heather starts.

“My name is Axel, for future reference.”

“Come on!” Leyla huffs, flying towards the woods.

“Never mind she’s definitely, Dagur’s.” Sleuther chuckles.

“Yep.” Windshear mutters, going with her rider and Axel to finish the ship off. While Dagur and Leyla flew into the forest, chasing away the hunters who were waiting in the forest. They weren’t even attempting to attack, no arrows they just ran away.

“These hunters are just sad.” Dagur mutters, watching as the group runs away, “the ones on the ships were better than this.”

“Well, they probably weren’t expecting to be attacked in the woods, they were using it for cover.” Leyla responds, “And now that we’ve found them, they’re running.”

“And it looks like they are all gone.” Dagur huffs, looking around.

“Is Dak still on the sea stack?” Leyla asks, looking back.

“He should be.” Dagur answers, “Come on.”

Mala was finishing patching up Winger. The arrow set beside her, Dak was sitting nearby watching his mother work.

“I’m sorry.” Dak mutters, just loud enough for the woman to hear.

“About what?” Mala asks, looking over after finishing wrapping the injury.

“I don’t know, not accepting you as my mother, being rude, anything.”

“It’s completely understandable, you’ve lived on your own for years,” Mala begins, “none of us would blame either of you, if you two never accepted us or if it takes years. We can work on it.”

Dak stares at the woman for a moment, before basically tackling her in a hug. Mala was shocked at the contact, looking around for a moment before wrapping her arms around the boy.

“Finally, I thought that was going to take longer.” Winger laughs.

Dak pulls from his mothers arms looking at his brother, “Haha you're hilarious.”

The rest of the dragon riders land on the sea stack. Dak runs over to his twin, “Did you find him?”

“Nope, he’s not here.” Leyla answers, “They were hiding in the woods, no idea if Ivar was there.”

“Is Winger okay?” Finn asks.

“He should be.” Mala answers, “We just have to wait for the dragon Root to wear off.”

“Dragon Root?” Leyla asks, looking at Winger who could easily stand already, “Unless the dragon root worn off incredibly quickly, it couldn’t be dragon root.”

“Why do you say that?” Heather asks.

“Well dragon Root affects a dragon's ability to do everything, and right now Winger is easily doing it.” Leyla explains, “He’s standing, he’s making sense, and if anything I bet he could fly right now.”

“Why would they be using normal arrows then?” Heather asks, “The dragon Root was used as an attack.”

“Where’s the arrow?” Leyla asks, Mala picks it up and hands it to her daughter. Leyla looks it over before turning to the dragon, “Winger try firing a blast.”

“Why?” Dak asks, looking at his twin.

“I’m testing a theory.”

Winger stands up, preparing to fire a blast but nothing happens, so the swiftwing tries again and again nothing happened. “What’s going on?” Winger asks.

“Ivar’s arrows have the ability to take dragon fire away, that’s why he’s using them.” Leyla explains.

“But how?” Heather asks, “This shouldn’t be possible.”

“A few months ago we found this cavern of crystals that affected dragons in different ways.” Leyla starts, “And the red ones, took away the dragon's ability to fire.”

“Are you telling me, this man made the crystals into arrowheads?” Axel asks.

“Yep.” Leyla mutters.

“But dragons were only affected if they were near the crystals,” Finn cuts in, “And to completely take Winger’s fire away it took way more than the others.”

“It must have a different effect if it ends up in the dragon’s blood stream.” Mala responds.

“Is it going to wear off?!” Dak asks.

“Who knows, all we can do is hope.” Leyla tells her brother, resting a hand on his shoulder.

“So what now?” Finn asks.

“We’ll regroup on Defenders of the Wing,” Dagur starts, “Send for the other dragons riders, and the Wing maidens to get this figured out.”

They all agree flying towards the island, while Ivar watches from afar. When the dragon riders attacked the woods, he had already retreated up to a cliff that gave him a view of what was happening on the sea stack.

“What’s happening?” A hunter asks.

“My plan is going on course.” Ivar responds, walking away.

Notes:

Big Brother Axel is really coming in handy

If anyone wonders what Ivar looks like basically picture Loki from the first Avengers

again I am so sorry for the hiatus I did not think it would take this long, but I hope you all enjoy cause the next chapter is unfortunately going to be awhile too
