Chapter Text

Hello, Dear Readers!

This is your old pal, Naughty Wolf. I am writing this Preface/Introduction to explain what this piece is. This guide, and all of its brothers and sisters in the "The Official Guide to the Naughty Wolf Multiverse" series was written to provide bonus content, such as character profiles, character images, and character background information that does not necessarily fit well into the main story's prose format. It also contains a timeline of the events in the series, and any Easter Eggs that I feel are worth mentioning. It is intended to enhance your understanding and enjoyment of the series. I hope that you find the information interesting and worth reading, even if it is not a traditional story.

This particular guide is for the Heads-Verse, a.k.a. the Coming Up Heads series. The series gets its name from the first story in the series, entitled simply "Heads." That story, and its counterpart, "Tails" were written for Sean Diaz's birthday in 2023. Both stories were intended to be one-and-done multi-chapter stories, not ongoing series, but life has a funny way of changing our plans.

Thanks for reading.

Chapter 2: Story Timeline

Summary:

This is a timeline of events in the Heads-Verse universe.

Notes:

This timeline is complete as of part 29: And So It Begins.

I will try to keep it up to date, but we all know I struggle with that. 😅

Chapter Text

Sean Diaz

Sean-Face

Date of Birth: August 15, 2000

Occupation: College Freshman at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39), College Sophomore at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington (from Part 40 onward); Sales Assistant in the sports department at Z-Mart; Cashier at Diaz Auto Master; Tow Truck Driver for Diaz Auto Master (in training)

Relationships: Esteban Diaz (father), Daniel Diaz (younger brother), Karen Reynolds (mother, estranged), Claire Reynolds (maternal grandmother, estranged), Stephen Reynolds (maternal grandfather, estranged), Lyla Park (best friend), Charles Eriksen (neighbor).

Sexual Preferences: Sean is a bisexual, who trends toward having younger male partners and same-age female partners. He is versatile, but leans heavily towards topping, however he will bottom for the right person (like his little brother). He does not mind performing oral, but prefers to receive. Sean is a gentle dom. He will be assertive and dominant during sex if his partner likes it, but does not like to harm his partners.

Character Description: Sean is a caring, warm, and friendly person. He is fiercely protective of his family and friends, including Daniel's circle of friends. Sean frequently shows his love for people by doing nice things for them, or by buying small presents for them (such as food or drinks). Sean enjoys watching movies, playing video games, listening to music, skateboarding, and drawing art. Sean is a good student, shining in most subjects. He has a weakness for math and some of the more direct sciences (such as chemistry), but excels at physical education, visual arts, and languages. Although Sean enjoys being a slacker on occasion, he leads a fairly active lifestyle, including several physically-demanding hobbies (such as running track). When Sean does have to work he is a hard worker, especially when he is working toward earning for someone else (such as when he is saving up for a gift). Sean was shy and socially awkward as a younger teenager, but has gained in confidence and charisma as he grew up. He is still an introvert, and enjoys his alone time, but he isn't as shy and nerdy as he used to be.

Track Events: 110M Hurdles, 100M, 200M, 400M, 400M Hurdles, 800M, 1500M (note: Sean does not run every one of these events every time)

Nicknames: Silver Runner ("superhero" name), Wolf, Big Wolf

Character Type: Sean is one of the main protagonists of the story. He is a purely canon character, although naturally I have given him my own spin.

Daniel Diaz

Daniel-Face

Date of Birth: April 11, 2007

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Esteban Diaz (father), Sean Diaz (older brother), Karen Reynolds (mother, estranged), Claire Reynolds (maternal grandmother, estranged), Stephen Reynolds (maternal grandfather, estranged), Chris Eriksen (Boyfriend)

Sexual Preferences: Daniel is a bisexual, with a preference for male partners. He has had mostly same-age partners, but is not opposed to older partners. He is versatile, but leans moderately towards bottoming. He absolutely loves giving head, although he also enjoys receiving. Daniel likes to be submissive and please his partner, but he will sometimes venture outside of his comfort zone to please a partner or to explore new activities or roles.

Character Description: Daniel is a curious, fun-loving, mischievous, and excitable boy. Although he has matured some in the last few years, Daniel is still a largely trusting and innocent person. He is friendly, outgoing, and talkative with everyone, and even more so when he gets to know you. He has telekinesis, but doesn't often use his powers in this AU. Daniel is impish, and loves pulling pranks, telling jokes, and tricking people. Daniel is in the midst of puberty, and is constantly horny. He usually hides it, but among friends, he can be lewd and perverted, especially in his sense of humor. Like his older brother, Daniel enjoys skateboarding, sports, art, movies, and video games, although Daniel prefers crafting and sculpting to drawing. Also like Sean, Daniel's scholastic aptitudes are weakest in math and sciences and strongest in physical education and art. Daniel has a slight speech impediment and struggles with language more than Sean does, but this does nothing to slow him down in the social arena. Daniel also prefers team sports to running, favoring baseball, basketball, and soccer. Daniel loves comic books of many kinds, especially superheroes (Hawt Dawg Man and Power Bear being his favorites), science fiction, robots, and anything to do with outer space.

Basketball Position: Small Forward (originally), Shooting Guard

Baseball Position: Short Stop

Nicknames: Enano (by Sean), Cub (by Sean), Lil Bro (by Sean), Danny, Sugar Bear (by Lyla), Angel (by Lyla), Superwolf ("superhero" name)

Character Type: Daniel is one of the main protagonists of the story. He is a purely canon character, although naturally I have given him my own spin.

Esteban Diaz

Esteban-02

Date of Birth: January 11, 1971

Occupation: Certified Automotive Mechanic; Owner of the Diaz Auto Master repair shop in Seattle, Washington.

Relationships: Sean Diaz (oldest son), Daniel Diaz (youngest son), Karen Reynolds (ex-wife), Claire Reynolds (former mother-in-law, estranged), Stephen Reynolds (former father-in-law, estranged), Jorge Diaz (father, deceased), Luna Diaz (mother, deceased), Eduardo Diaz (older brother, deceased), Olivia Fernanda Veracruz (cousin, out of contact)

Character Description: Esteban is a loving, hard-working entrepreneur and family man with a soft heart and an excellent sense of humor. As a single father, Esteban works very hard to support his two sons, and puts in a great deal of effort to get the most of the limited time he gets to spend with them. Esteban loves holidays and parties, and sometimes acts like an overgrown kid (for example, he loves dressing up for Halloween). Esteban is, as Sean calls it, a "secret nerd," enjoying video games, science fiction, especially cheap, trashy B-Movies. Esteban loves cars, and besides working as a mechanic, he usually also has a project car to work on from home. Esteban tries to be a good father, friend, boss, and neighbor; he is always the first to lend a hand, listen to your troubles, or offer advice. Esteban values honesty, integrity, hard work, and personal fulfillment, and he tries to instill these values in his sons. Esteban enjoys watching sports on the TV, especially baseball; a passion he shares with Daniel (although Sean finds baseball "slow and boring").

Character Type: Esteban is one of the major supporting characters of the story. He is a purely canon character, although naturally I have given him my own spin.

Chris Eriksen

Chris-02

Date of Birth: February 08, 2007

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Charles Eriksen (father), Emily Eriksen (mother, deceased), Peter Wyatt (maternal grandfather), Kristen Wyatt (maternal grandmother), James Eriksen (paternal grandfather), Anne Eriksen (paternal grandmother), Noah Harper (cousin), Kalino Harper (uncle), Caroline Harper (aunt), Daniel Diaz (Boyfriend)

Sexual Preferences: Chris is a bisexual, with a slight preference for male partners. He has had mostly same-age partners, but is not opposed to older partners. He is somewhat versatile, but leans heavily towards topping. Chris does not mind giving head, but prefers to receive. Chris prefers to be the dominant partner because he so rarely gets to be in control in other arenas. Chris is still exploring his preferences, so he will sometimes explore new activities or roles.

Character Description: Chris is clever, polite, sensitive, and has a vivid imagination. He aspires to be an artist, like his now-deceased mother, who he idolizes. The loss of his mother hit Chris hard, and he had some anger issues and difficulty with his schoolwork cause by his grief in the wake of her death. Although one never truly gets over such a loss, Chris has since adjusted well and no longer struggles with school or anger issues. Chris's dad has been at times abusive and at other times neglectful, leading Chris to be sometimes slow to open up or trust others, and perhaps too self-reliant for his own good at times. Despite that, he is a fiercely loyal son and friend when he does open up to you, and anyone in his inner circle should consider themselves blessed. Like his best friend, Daniel Diaz, Chris loves comic book superheroes (especially Hawt Dawg Man and Power Bear), science fiction, robots, and outer space. Their similarity in interests is just one reason the two bonded so quickly after Chris moved in next door. Chris isn't overly athletic, but he tries very hard, and has a keen interest in basketball because of his father, although he find baseball to be more fun.

Basketball Position: Center

Baseball Position: Second Base

Nicknames: Captain Spirit ("superhero" name), Kit, Champ, Sport, Slugger

Character Type: Chris is one of the major supporting characters of the story. He is a purely canon character, although naturally I have given him my own spin. Among other things, I have made him Noah's cousin.

Charles Eriksen

Charles

Date of Birth: Unspecified, probably sometime in 1984-1985

Occupation: Gym Teacher, Head Boys Basketball Coach, and assorted Assistant Coaching duties at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington.

Relationships: Chris Eriksen (son), Emily Eriksen (wife, deceased), Peter Wyatt (father-in-law), Kristen Wyatt (mother-in-law), James Eriksen (father), Anne Eriksen (mother), Noah Harper (nephew), Kalino Harper (brother-in-law), Caroline Harper (younger sister)

Character Description: Charles is a widower, raising his son as a single father in the wake of his wife's death. Charles turned to drinking to help deal with the pain of Emily's death, but it has only led to him developing new problems. Charles has, at times, been a distant, neglectful, and even abusive father to Chris, but Chris still loves him fiercely, often protecting him, despite these shortcomings. Charles was a top-tier basketball prospect, with designs on becoming an NBA player, but his career was cut short due to injury. Following the end of his career, Charles threw himself into becoming the best husband and father he could be. Charles became a gym teacher and basketball coach in an attempt to channel his love for basketball. While he does love being around the game, and enjoys working with the children, it is clear he still misses his glory days. Charles moved from small-town Beaver Creek, Oregon to the big city of Seattle, Washington in an attempt to get a fresh start after being fired from his old teaching job due to drinking-related misadventures and his distaste for his new job with the railroad. Now working as a teacher and coach again, Charles is doing much better with his drinking problem, though he does still have the occasional slip. Despite his many problems, Charles does try to be a good father to his son and a good coach and role model to all of his students.

Character Type: Charles is one of the major supporting characters of the story. He is a purely canon character, although naturally I have given him my own spin. Among other things, I have given him a younger sister and parents that are not mentioned in the game canon.

Noah Harper

Noah-02

Date of Birth: December 07, 2006

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Kalino Harper (father), Caroline Harper (mother), Leilani Harper (paternal grandmother), James Eriksen (maternal grandfather), Anne Eriksen (maternal grandmother), Charles Eriksen (uncle), Chris Eriksen (cousin)

Sexual Preferences: Noah is homosexual and avoids female partners. He has had mostly same-age partners, but is not opposed to older partners. He is almost exclusively a bottom and immensely enjoys taking cock. Noah is quite submissive, even more so than Daniel, and really enjoys when a top goes hard and fast. Noah has a strong preference for giving head, enjoying it even more than receiving. Noah is one of the few boys who actually really enjoys the giving role in rimming as much as the receiving role. Like the other boys, Noah is still exploring new activities, but he is pretty firmly set in preferring his role as a bottom.

Character Description: Noah is Daniel's oldest, and arguably best, friend. The son of a mostly-absentee workaholic father and a bored rich housewife, Noah is often neglected by his parents. He is close with his nanny/housekeeper, Connie, and also greatly enjoys spending time with his friends and cousin at the Diaz household. Noah treats Sean and Daniel like his own brothers, and secretly loves the fatherly attention he gets from Esteban. Noah is shy and quiet, but quite friendly when he opens up to you. He is probably the most empathetic and caring of all the boys. Despite being naturally meek and submissive, Noah is a fiercely loyal boy, and does his best to look out for all of his friends and family. Noah loves to have fun, making him a bit of a glutton for a good time; if there is food, fun, or adventure to be had, Noah has a tendency to overindulge. Like his friends, Noah is curious, clever, and kind with a sharp wit and love of humor. Noah isn't the brightest boy among his friends, and is often the slowest on the uptake, but he is by no means dimwitted or stupid. Noah enjoys science class and loves working with his hands.

Basketball Position: Backup Power Forward (originally), Power Forward

Baseball Position: Catcher

Nicknames: Teddy Bear (by Sean), Baby Bear (by Sean), Cuz (by Chris), Keiki (by his father), Osito (by Sean, Esteban), Bearzerker ("superhero" name)

Character Type: Noah is one of the major supporting characters of the story. He is a semi-canon character. He appears in the main game only as a first name and a blurry photograph. I have made up 99% of his character, including personality, last name, birthday, backstory, and to a large extent appearance.

Harry Thompson

Harry-02

Date of Birth: November 28, 2006

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Frank Thompson (father, jailed), Linda Thompson (mother), Chelsea Thompson (younger sister, 4), Sean Diaz (boyfriend/crush)

Sexual Preferences: Harry is homosexual and avoids female partners. He has had mostly same-age partners, but is not opposed to older partners. He is almost exclusively a bottom. Harry is less submissive with partners other than Sean, embracing more of a Power Bottom role with the other boys. Harry enjoys both giving and receiving oral sex. Like the other boys, Harry is still exploring new activities, but like Noah, he is pretty firmly set in preferring his role as a bottom.

Character Description: Harry is a troubled boy with a good heart. He has a history of bullying, but has since made a commitment to mend his ways and make up for the damage he caused. Harry struggles with his burgeoning sexuality, and suffers from a slight case of internalized homophobia. His friendships with Daniel and the others, especially Sean, has helped in coming to terms with his homosexuality, and Harry has made great strides in that regard. Harry is learning to control his temper, though he often finds that difficult, especially if somebody is bothering him, his family, or his friends. Harry is, despite his problems, a mature and responsible young man. He craves discipline, and prefers a rigid, structured environment. He enjoys working out, especially lifting weights, and also enjoys playing most sports, including basketball, baseball, and football. Harry can be deeply emotional, but owing largely to a toxic upbringing, has difficulty controlling or displaying those emotions. He sometimes lashes out verbally, especially at himself, and he often has serious self-doubts, second-guessing himself or being very self-critical about his mistakes.

Basketball Position: Shooting Guard (originally), Small Forward

Baseball Position: First Base

Nicknames: Duck, Duckling, Ducky, Titanium ("superhero" name)

Character Type: Harry is one of the major supporting characters of the story. He is a semi-canon character. He appears in the main game only as a name and a story about bullying. I have made up 99% of his character, including personality, the bulk of his backstory, his birthday, and his appearance.

Jayden Robinson

Jayden-02

Date of Birth: January 08, 2007

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Petty Officer First Class Keshawn Robinson (father), Elizabeth "Betsy" Robinson (mother), Violet Robinson (younger sister, 5), Lamar Robinson (younger brother, 3)

Sexual Preferences: Jayden leans heterosexual and would prefer female partners, but is sexually fluid enough to fool around with guys due to a lack of available/willing girls. He has had mostly same-age partners, but is not opposed to older partners. He is almost exclusively a top. He has experimented with receiving anal sex, but does not much enjoy it beyond maybe some fingering. Jayden tends to be dominant and enjoys gently teasing and taunting his partner. Jayden has a strong preference for receiving head, but he doesn't mind giving it as long as he gets something out of it. Like the other boys, Jayden is still exploring new activities, but he is pretty firmly set in preferring his role as an aggressive, dominant top.

Character Description: Jayden is kind, funny, and athletic. He tries to be a good big brother to his two younger siblings, Violet and Lamar, even though he doesn't have a lot in common with them because of the age gap. Despite this, he loves his time in sports and with friends because he often feels overlooked at home, since his dad is usually on duty and his mom is usually busy taking care of the younger two kids, leaving Jayden either left to his own devices or expected to pitch in. Because of this jealousy, Jayden doesn't often talk a lot about his younger siblings, but he does love them. Jayden loves working out and staying fit, and enjoys both running and playing team sports, especially basketball and baseball. Unlike most of his friends, Jayden's best subject is math, although he struggles with almost everything else, including science, languages, and art. Jayden is a good friend, trying to reciprocate invitations and favors. Because he has been forced to move so much for his father's military career, Jayden can be slow to make friends and is sometimes socially awkward. Otherwise, Jayden is kind, friendly, and adventurous; quick to give or accept dares or make bold moves to impress his friends.

Basketball Position: Point Guard

Baseball Position: Starting Pitcher, Left Field (when not pitching)

Nicknames: Jay, J-Dawg, Pup (by Sean), Bad Dawg ("superhero" name)

Character Type: Jayden is a completely original character. He is one of the major supporting characters.

Lyla Park

Lyla

Date of Birth: October 01, 1999

Occupation: College Freshman at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington; Barista at the Cool Beans coffee shop in Seattle, Washington

Relationships: Unspecified (father), Yu-Jin Park (mother), Unspecified (Aunt)

Character Description: Lyla is a funny, sarcastic, and friendly person with a naughty streak. She loves pranks, dirty jokes, acts of rebellion, and minor mischief. She is Sean's best friend and maintains a sisterly relationship with Sean and Daniel, while acting like a big sister or unofficial den mother to the other younger boys. Lyla sometimes babysits Daniel, Chris, and Noah, but she is called upon to babysit less than she used to be. Lyla suffers from anxiety, clinical depression, and insomnia. She is receiving treatment for these issues and is making progress in dealing with them. She has been known to have mood swings because of these issues, but they have been lessening with age and treatment. The apparent cure of Daniel's mysterious medical issues did a lot to improve her mental state, as she often worried about her "little angel." Like Sean, Lyla enjoys skateboarding, movies, and video games, and the two often enjoy these things together, either on their own, or with their friends. Since Eric, Adam, and Megan left for college out of state, Lyla and Sean have grown closer with Ellery and with each other. Daniel and his friends have largely stepped up to fill the gap left when her older friends left. Lyla has issues with her mom, who she jokingly calls "The Momster," a play on "mom" and "monster," because Yu-Jin can be overbearing at times.

Character Type: Lyla is one of the main supporting characters of the story. She is a purely canon character, although naturally I have given her my own spin.

Thomas "Tommy" Woodrow Wilson

Tommy

Date of Birth: June 23, 2007

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Thomas Jefferson Wilson (father), Tammy Wilson (mother)

Sexual Preferences: Tommy is a pansexual with no true preference in partners. He has had mostly same-age partners, but is not opposed to older partners. He has not experimented enough to identify a preferred role, but so far he has liked pretty much everything he has experienced. Tommy is not so much submissive as malleable. He is extremely curious and is easily goaded into trying new things. He enjoys both giving and receiving oral sex and enjoyed bottoming for Daniel. Like the other boys, Tommy is still exploring new activities and roles. He is much less set in his preferences than the other boys; all of this is still very new to him.

Character Description: Tommy sports a California-inspired surfer boy look and has the attitude to match; he is the laid-back, easygoing type. He is curious and adventurous to a point, but also fairly lazy. This means that he is often willing to go along with pretty much any suggestion, but isn't likely to organize mischief himself. Tommy was the original starter for Noah's position, but lost out on the starter role when Noah showed more work ethic (and also had a growth spurt, which probably helped). Despite that, Tommy remains on good terms with his teammates, even if he isn't part of the inner circle. He is always polite, courteous, and fun to be around. Tommy's home life is strict and lonely, with an absentee (workaholic) father and an overbearing mother. As such, he jumps at any opportunity to get out from under his mother's thumb.

Basketball Position: Power Forward (originally), Backup Power Forward

Baseball Position: Right Field, Pitcher, Backup Outfielder (when Naresh is pitching)

Nicknames: Tommy, T-Rex, Frog (by Sean), Froggy (by Sean)

Character Type: Tommy is a completely original character. He is a regular minor supporting character.

Kole Freeman

Kole

Date of Birth: Unspecified

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Unspecified father, Unspecified mother

Character Description: Kole is energetic, determined, and ambitious. He works hard, especially in sports, and has designs on eventually making the first string of the basketball team. Kole has a crush on Nevea, and isn't shy about trying to convince her to go out with him. Sometimes Kole lets his ambition get the better of him, becoming aggressive or manipulative in his attempts to get what he wants. That said, Kole is not a bully and he is not a bad kid, just a little rough round the edges.

Basketball Position: Backup Point Guard

Baseball Position: Utility, Relief Pitcher

Character Type: Kole is a completely original character. He is a rarely-appearing minor supporting character.

Brennan Davis

Brennan

Date of Birth: Unspecified

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Unspecified father, Unspecified mother

Character Description: Brennan isn't a bad kid per se, but he can be bossy, arrogant, and aggressive at times. Brennan is a large and intimidating boy, and he isn't shy about using that to his advantage. On the positive side, Brennan is decisive and brave, and won't back down from a fight, especially if his friends or teammates need him.

Basketball Position: Backup Center

Baseball Position: Backup Infielder (prefers 3B)

Character Type: Brennan is a completely original character. He is a rarely-appearing minor supporting character.

Naresh Iyer

Naresh

Date of Birth: Unspecified

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Unspecified father, Unspecified mother

Character Description: Naresh is a quiet, intelligent, and observant boy. He excels in all of his classes, especially math and sciences. He is friendly, helpful, and honorable, with a strong sense of morality and decency. He sometimes helps the other boys with their homework, and has a knack for explaining concepts to them in a way they can understand. He is an introvert, and so can be shy. He has a tendency to let others speak up first in most social situations. He has a good sense of humor, and will laugh at other people's jokes, but he doesn't often crack jokes of his own.

Basketball Position: Backup Small Forward

Baseball Position: Starting Pitcher, Backup Outfielder

Character Type: Naresh is a completely original character. He is a rarely-appearing minor supporting character.

Javier Suarez

Javier

Date of Birth: February 25, 2007

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Unspecified father, Unspecified mother, Jose (oldest brother, 16), Jorge (older brother, 14), Jaime (younger brother, 10), Juanita (younger sister, 8)

Sexual Preferences: Javier is a bisexual with a slight preference towards female partners. His lack of willing female partners has led him to fool around with guys more often. He has had a mix of same-age and older partners, but is not opposed to older partners. He prefers to top, but does not mind bottoming when it is done right (his  bolder brothers tend to be too rough). Javi tends to be submissive with older partners and less so with same age peers. Javi enjoys both giving and receiving oral sex, but prefers receiving. Like the other boys, Javi is still exploring new activities and roles.

Character Description: Javier is charming, friendly, fun-loving, and outgoing. Like his basketball teammates, he enjoys sports, video games, and other amusements. He considers himself a ladies' man and aside from enjoying talking about them (one of his favorite subjects), he tries to be suave and chivalrous to impress the girls. The middle of five children, each born 2 years apart, he is a dutiful younger brother and a protective big brother, embracing both roles proudly.

Basketball Position: Backup Shooting Guard

Baseball Position: Starting Pitcher, Left Field (when Jayden is pitching), Right Field (when Tommy or Naresh are pitching)

Nicknames: Bunny (by Sean), Jackrabbit (by his brothers), Liebre (Spanish for "hare")

Character Type: Javier is a completely original character. He is a rarely-appearing minor supporting character.

Hal Morris

Hal-02

Date of Birth: March 17, 2007

Occupation: 6th grade student at Beaver Creek Middle School in Beaver Creek, Oregon (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Beaver Creek Middle School in Beaver Creek, Oregon (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Morris (father), Morris (mother)

Character Description: Hal was one of Chris's best friends back in Beaver Creek. He was in Chris's Kindergarten class, taught by Chris's mother, Emily. The two were very good friends, but their friendship struggled a little in the wake of Emily's death when Chris had to move across town to a cheaper house. Hal used to lend books and toys to Chris and vice-versa, and the two played on the same baseball team. Hal misses Chris, and tries to stay in contact, although it is hard because of the distance. The two still talk sometimes on PlayBox, emails, and the phone, but have also become pen pals, writing each other snail-mail letters once a month.

Baseball Position: Third Base

Character Type: Hal is one of the rarely-appearing minor supporting characters of the story. He is a semi-canon character. He appears in the main game only as a first name. I have made up 99% of his character, including personality, last name, birthday, backstory, and his appearance.

Kyler

Kyler-Face

Date of Birth: October 25, 2007

Occupation: 5th grade student (until Part 39). 6th grade student at Chase Middle School in Yakima, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Unspecified (father), Unspecified (mother)

Character Description: Kyler's backstory is a mystery, even to me. What we do know is that he likes the emo aesthetic and is an extremely promiscuous bottom. He is bold, decisive, and confident in himself and what he wants, leading him to be assertive. He is clever, imaginative, and resourceful, and often kind with a deep sense of fairness and loyalty. He is extremely perceptive, and has a nose for sniffing out secrets. (Yes, that is a red leather dog collar he is wearing.) 😉

Kyler's father is the coach of the Chase Middle School baseball team and usually brings the boy along with him on scouting trips, game trips, etc. Kyler and his dad have an open sexual relationship. Kyler's father gives Kyler an exceptionally free reign while on these trips. Kyler is free, or even encouraged, to meet his own needs on these trips; seeking out strangers for random, meaningless physical encounters; which he relates back to his father later. When possible, he liked to record these encounters and watch the videos with his dad.

Character Type: Kyler is an Original Character created by my friend, Luke. He will be a rarely-appearing character, doing something akin to guest appearances on a TV show.

Ava Clark

Ava

Date of Birth: Unspecified

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Character Description: Ava is a confident, intelligent, and outgoing girl. She is highly competitive, and pushes herself and others to compete, excel, and win in whatever she does. She is on the honor roll, the Math Olympiad team, and the student council, where she is Treasurer. She is also co-captain of the Osprey cheerleading squad, along with her best friend, Nevea Smith. She is also particularly close with teammate and friend Luna Nakamoto. Ava has had a crush on Daniel Diaz since the fourth grade. She has been flirting a bit more since Daniel has shown an increased interest in girls in the last year or so, and she is pleased that he has been more receptive to her advances lately.

Character Type: Ava is a completely original character. She is a minor supporting character.

Nevea Smith

Nevea

Date of Birth: Unspecified

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Character Description: Nevea, like her friend and cheerleading co-captain, Ava, is a confident, friendly, and outgoing girl with ambition in spades. Aside from being on the school cheerleading and dance teams, she competes as a member of the school's Science Olympiad and Robotics Club teams. Nevea knows that Kole has a crush on her, but she has her sights set on Jayden. Nevea has an older sister, Isabell "Izzie" Smith that went to Peacock High School with Sean and Lyla. Aside from Ava, her best friend on the squad is Reagan Johnson.

Character Type: Nevea is a completely original character. She is a minor supporting character.

Reagan Johnson

Reagan

Date of Birth: Unspecified

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Character Description: Reagan is a bright, funny, and friendly girl, but she doesn't have quite the confidence or ambition of her teammates. She is a little on the geeky side, and aside form being a cheerleader, she is a proud member of the school's Video Game and AV Club. Reagan has a crush on Harry, but doesn't realize Harry is gay.

Character Type: Reagan is a completely original character. She is a minor supporting character.

Luna Nakamoto

Luna

Date of Birth: Unspecified

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Character Description: Luna is every bit as intelligent, confident, and outgoing as her teammates and tends to overachieve in an attempt to please her strict and demanding parents. Aside from the cheerleading team, she is on the Math Olympiad and Science Olympiad teams, the Principal's Honor Roll, has perfect attendance, and is the student council Vice President. She is also in the school band, the Anime Club, and the chess club.

Character Type: Luna is a completely original character. She is a minor supporting character.

Logan Davino

Logan-Face

Date of Birth: Unspecified

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Unspecified father, Unspecified mother, Unspecified Grandfather

Character Description: Logan is a boy of Filipino descent. He is fairly short and stocky, but quite quick on his feet and very agile. He likes running and sports, especially baseball. His family is fairly poor, but he doesn’t mind. Logan enjoys the simple things in life. A ball or some marbles are just as good as the latest video games as far as he is concerned. Logan has an especially close relationship with his grandfather on his mother’s side, from whom he has learned a great many things, including the Tagalog and Spanish languages, woodcarving, and a great many simple classic card games, marble games, and dice games. He is friendly, outgoing, and intelligent, excelling at scholastic and athletics alike. He is a close friend (and more) with fellow runner Jarrett Carter. He also shares a special and close relationship with Coach Harris.

Other Sports: Middle Distance Sprinter in Track

Baseball Position: Relief Pitcher, Backup Infielder

Character Type: Logan is a completely original character. He is a rarely-appearing minor supporting character.

Relationships: Marco Perrino (father), Unspecified mother, Josh Perrino (identical twin younger brother), Giuseppe "Joey" Perrino (younger brother)

Character Description: Wyatt is the older of the two twins by about three minutes, a fact that he never lets his little brother live down. Of Italian heritage, the brothers have classic Italian features: black hair, pointed noses, dark eyes, and olive skin. Both boys speak a little Italian. They have enjoyed an upscale and somewhat pampered life thanks to their father’s successful restaurant, Perrino’s Italian Family Eatery. Wyatt is the more serious and studious of the two, often wearing darker, more upscale clothing than his slightly younger twin (favoring button-ups, polos, and form-fitting t-shirts). The brothers are identical enough that it is very hard to tell them apart, even if you know them. They have been known to “swap places” or play similar pranks in the past, but the instances of such things have lessened as they have grown up.

Baseball Position: Relief Pitcher, Backup Infielder

Character Type: Wyatt is a completely original character. He is a rarely-appearing minor supporting character.

Giosuè "Josh" Perrino

Josh-Face

Date of Birth: October 10, 2006

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Marco Perrino (father), Unspecified mother, Wyatt Perrino (identical twin older brother), Giuseppe "Joey" Perrino (younger brother)

Character Description: Josh is the younger of the two twins by about three minutes. Josh is the less serious and more fun-loving of the two, often wearing bolder, brighter clothing than his slightly older twin (favoring bright t-shirts, colorful prints, and baggy, comfortable clothes). The brothers are identical enough that it is very hard to tell them apart, even if you know them. They have been known to “swap places” or play similar pranks in the past, but the instances of such things have lessened as they have grown up.

Baseball Position: Relief Pitcher, Backup Infielder

Character Type: Josh is a completely original character. He is a rarely-appearing minor supporting character.

Clayton Smith

Clayton-Face

Date of Birth: Unspecified

Occupation: 6th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (until Part 39). 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington (from part 40 onward).

Relationships: Unspecified father, Unspecified mother

Character Description: Clayton is a boy’s boy. He may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he’s not outright dumb. He may never be a straight-A student, but he does pretty well in school, because he works hard and asks for help when he needs it. He is simple, fun-loving, and loyal. He likes to be helpful, and is protective of those smaller and weaker than he is. He loves rough-and-tumble activities, especially outdoorsy ones like hiking, fishing, camping, kayaking, and rock climbing. He also likes combat sports, which is why he got into wrestling, and he is also taking boxing lessons.

Other Sports: Wrestling (Heavyweight Division)

Baseball Position: Third Base, Backup Catcher

Character Type: Clayton is a completely original character. He is a rarely-appearing minor supporting character.

Jarrett Carter

Jarrett-Face

He is fast on his feet and with his tongue, especially when telling jokes, teasing, or dishing out zingers. He is physically active, and enjoys many sports, especially running. He likes watching basketball, but didn't try out for the team because he lacked confidence in his game. He had a special relationship with Coach Harris, who he loves and respects very much. He has an exceptionally close relationship with fellow teammate from track and baseball, Logan Davino. He, like Logan, shares a special and close relationship with Coach Harris.

Other Sports: Short Distance Sprinter in Track

Baseball Position: Center Field

Character Type: Jarrett is a completely original character. He is a rarely-appearing minor supporting character.

Ben Stanton

Ben-New

Date of Birth: November 9, 2006

Occupation: 7th grade student at Osprey Middle School in Seattle, Washington.

Relationships: Unspecified father, Unspecified mother

Sexual Preferences: Ben’s sexual preferences are unknown, as he has not shown any real interest in sex at this point. This may be because he is a slow bloomer. He is both short and underweight for his age and shows no obvious signs of having started puberty yet.

Character Description: Ben is shy, quiet, and socially awkward by nature, but becomes friendly after he warms up. He usually wears a hoodie, even if the weather isn’t appropriate for it, because it comforts him like a safety blanket, and he tends to chew on its drawstrings when he gets nervous. He is intelligent, curious, and imaginative, which can sometimes get him in trouble. For example, he tends to overshare (info dump) with potential friends, get quite competitive during trivia games, or daydream during class. He can sometimes be stubborn, and doesn’t easily change his mind once it’s made up. Despite his high intellect, Ben can be a bit scatterbrained, disorganized, and even forgetful, and often needs to borrow pencils or paper. Ben loves science, animals, and space and loves watching documentaries about his hyper-fixations. He likes to collect things he finds interesting, such as fossils, coins, and rocks.

Ben is not physically inclined, and has no real interest in sports. He tends to be clumsy, sometimes accidentally dropping things or knocking things over without meaning to.

Character Type: Ben is a completely original character. He is a rarely-appearing minor supporting character.

Chapter 5: A Brief Primer on Baseball

Summary:

A Brief Primer on Baseball, including broad strokes coverage of: positions, rules, and terminology that are frequently used in youth baseball.

Notes:

Because so many readers mentioned that they were not familiar with the rules of basketball during the basketball team storyline, I decided to make a brief primer on baseball for readers who want to know more. This is far from a comprehensive resource, but I tried to cover all the basics. If something is unclear, or you have other questions, please feel free to ask.

Chapter Text

Objective: The objective of baseball is to score more runs than the opposing team after a given number of Innings are up. Runs are scored by advancing a runner to home plate.

Basic Rules:

Team Construction and Substitutions:

  • Each team has a line-up of at least nine players.

  • The line-up is also known as the Batting Order. Players must bat, in order, as listed on the line-up.

  • If a player bats out of order, he will be declared Out.

  • If a player is unable to appear at the plate during his turn for any reason, he will be declared Out.

  • A Coach may avoid the penalty for failure to appear at bat by removing the absent player from the game and replacing him with a substitute, but this means the removed player cannot reenter the game.

  • A substitution can be made at any time there is a Dead Ball Situation (that is, while the ball is not in play), but you must alert the Umpire of the substitution beforehand.

  • If a substitution is made, the player may either exit the game or switch defensive positions. (Meaning, for example, a Pitcher may move to another position instead of exiting the game, but then another player will have to come off the field to make space for the new Pitcher.)

  • Once a player has exited the game, that player may not reenter the game.

  • If a player switches positions, they do not change their batting order, only the position played on defense.

  • Once a pitcher changes positions, he may not switch back to pitcher within the same game.

  • If a player exits the game, the player who replaces that player inherits their position in the batting order.

  • If a substitution is made for a Batter during an At Bat, the new Batter inherits the original Batter’s Count. (That is, if there are 2 Balls and 1 Strike when the Batter leaves, the Substitute begins his At Bat with 2 Balls and 1 Strike.)

  • While on offense, the batting team may have up to two coaches on the field (one by first base and one by third base). The function of these coaches is to help players decide when to run to the next base. Coaches at these positions may not touch a player (even their own) during live play and must not interfere with the defense in any way. These coaches are allowed to communicate with their players, including giving coded hand signals.
  • While on defense, the coach must remain in the dug out, unless he is communicating with the umpire (such as in reporting a substitution), or unless he has been granted a conference to talk with one of his players.

Officiating:

  • The official in charge of officiating the game is called an Umpire. The Umpire stands behind the catcher and calls balls, strikes, and determines whether a ball in play is fair or foul, and whether a runner is safe or out.

  • In some instances, a single Umpire officiates the game. In others, more than one umpire may be used. There is always an umpire, known as the Head Umpire, behind home plate. If more than one umpire is used, their position will vary based on how many umpires are used. If two umpires are used, the second umpire will usually line up behind the second base bag. If three umpires are used, the two infield umpires will usually line up behind first base and third base, often slightly in foul territory. If four umpires are used, one umpire will line up behind each base.

  • Umpires can and often do consult with each other to get more information and other opinions from the other umpires, since the other umpires will have a different and potentially better angle of the play. In the event of a dispute, the Head Umpire has the final decision. That said, he will almost always defer to the umpire who had the best view of the play (generally, the one assigned to the base where the play occurred).

Game Length and Structure:

  • The game is divided into frames called Innings, with each team getting a chance to bat and field during each inning (although not at the same time).

  • In higher-level leagues, nine innings is an official game. In Middle School baseball, the game is usually shortened to only six or seven innings.

  • The game has no hard time limits, only inning limits. An Inning takes as long as it takes.

  • If a game is still tied after the set number of regulation innings, then they will play more innings, called Extra Innings.

  • Rules for Extra Innings vary, but for our purposes, they are treated as normal innings in every way.

  • The Home team bats second, called the Bottom of the Inning.

  • The Visiting team bats first, called the Top of the Inning.

  • The team on offense is (or “At Bat”) is allowed one player (The Batter) that attempts to put the ball into play. They may also have up to three more players (Runners), one per each base.

  • The team on defense (or “In the Field”) is allowed nine players at once, scattered across the playing field.

  • Players may line up wherever they please, with the exception of the Pitcher (who by rule must pitch from the mound) and the Catcher (who by rule must squat behind the plate). Despite this, most teams line up in standard positions because leaving gaps in your defense is generally a bad strategy.

Pitcher Protection Rules:

  • In Middle School Baseball, a Pitcher is protected by pitch count limits. A pitcher cannot throw more than 85 pitches in one day.

  • If a player pitches 20 or fewer pitches in a day, no rest is required.

  • If a player pitches between 21 and 35 pitches in one day, then one calendar day of rest must be observed before they are eligible to pitch again.

  • If a player pitches between 36 and 50 pitches in one day, then two calendar days of rest must be observed before they are eligible to pitch again.

  • If a player pitches between 51 and 65 pitches in one day, then three calendar days of rest must be observed before they are eligible to pitch again.

  • If a player pitches 66 or more pitches in one day, then four calendar days of rest must be observed before they are eligible to pitch again.

  • A Pitcher may not pitch in more than two games per day, regardless of pitch count.

Field Dimensions and Construction:

  • The distance between the pitcher’s plate and home plate is a specific, standard distance. In Middle School (in other words, for our purposes), that distance is usually 54 feet. In High School and beyond, this distance is usually 60 feet 6 inches.

  • The distance between bases (i.e. between home plate and first, between first and second, and so forth) is a specific, standard distance that varies by age group. In sixth grade (in other words, for our purposes), that distance is usually 70 feet. In seventh and eighth grades (i.e. at the JV and Varsity level), that distance is usually 80 feet. In High School and beyond, this distance is usually 90 feet. The bases are organized in a perfect square within the Infield.

  • The Infield is the territory in front of and immediately behind the bases. On most fields, the infield is delineated by a dirt surface. In some fields, the entire infield is dirt, while on some nicer fields, there is also grass in the infield, but there is a stripe of dirt along the basepaths.

  • The distance between home plate and the outfield wall is not usually standardized, even within leagues. However, there is usually a standardize acceptable range (for the minimum and maximum distance) within a league. For our purposes, the distance will usually fall between 250 and 325 feet from home plate to the corners. In High School and beyond, this range is usually between 330 feet and 400 feet.

  • The geometry of a field, in general, is a cone, but may vary slightly in the arc of the cone’s curve. In some fields, there is a uniform distance at every point in the arc of the outfield wall. In some other fields, the arc of the curve in the outfield wall may vary, making it longest at Center Field and shortest in the corners. Regardless of geometry, the field must still be within the regulation range for its league by actual distances, not averages. This means that no point in the wall can be outside of the acceptable range in either direction. (For example, a field might be 250 feet all the way along the fence. Or it may be 325 feet all along the fence. Or it could be 250 feet at the corners and 325 feet at Center Field. Any of these configurations would be acceptable.)

  • The Outfield is the section of the field behind the bases all the way to the fence. On most fields, the outfield is entirely grass, although on some nicer fields there is a strip of dirt along the outside fence known as The Warning Track (this allows a player to know they are nearing the wall without looking by the feel of the ground beneath their feet).

  • The Outfield fence is often padded, or lined with a high-visibility plastic cap that increases player safety by covering sharp edges (on chain link fences) or dulling hard surfaces (on wooden or concrete fences).

Pitching:

  • The Pitcher must throw the ball to home plate from a rubber plate (usually elevated on a very small hill) called the “Pitcher’s Mound” or the “Pitching Rubber.” The pitching rubber is a specific, standard distance from home plate. In High School and beyond, this distance is usually 60 feet 6 inches. In Middle School (in other words, for our purposes), that distance is usually 54 feet.

  • The Pitcher must Come Set before delivering the pitch.

  • A Pitcher “Comes Set” when he puts his pivot foot against the pitching rubber while both shoulders are facing first base (for left-handed pitchers) or third base (for right-handed pitchers), and holds the ball with both hands in front of his body.

  • A Pitcher must come to a complete and discernible stop between Coming Set and beginning his pitching motion to deliver the pitch. Failure to come to a complete stop is an Illegal Pitch (colloquially called “Quick Pitching”).

  • An Illegal Pitch is considered a Ball. If any Runners are on base, an Illegal Pitch is also a Balk.

  • A Balk automatically advances any and all runners (but not the Batter) by one base. Yes, this can potentially result in scoring a Run.

  • There are many other potential actions that can result in a Balk, but generally, you are not allowed to attempt to trick the Batters or Runners into thinking you have started a pitch and then not follow through with the pitch.

  • A Pitcher may throw to the base instead of home plate to attempt to make a play on a base (for example, if a Runner is Leading Off). This type of play is called a Pick Off. However, he may only do so before Coming Set, or if already Set, before starting a Pitching Motion (which includes making a motion toward home plate), so he must be careful to avoid illegal motions on a Pick Off attempt.

Batting:

  • A player can attempt to hit the ball to put it in play. The player at home plate attempting to hit the ball is called a Batter.

  • A player may attempt to tap the ball into play with the bat using a special grip instead of swinging freely. This is called a Bunt.

  • The area that extends from the top of the batter’s shoulders to the bottom of his knee caps and covers the width of home plate is called the Strike Zone.

  • The foul lines extends from the corners of home plate to the outfield wall in a straight line. The area between these foul lines is the field of play, called Fair Territory. Any land outside of these lines is Foul Territory.

  • If the ball is pitched through the Strike Zone and it is not hit, that is a Strike.

  • If a batter swings at a pitch and misses, that also counts as a Strike.

  • A player may stop their swing in mid-motion. If the Batter halts his motion in time (generally before the wrists “break” forward), this is called a Checked Swing and does not count as a swing attempt. In the event of a controversy, the Umpire decides whether the Batter attempted to swing. If there is an Umpire at first base (for right-handed batters) or third base (for left-handed batters), the Batter or Umpire may ask his opinion on whether the swing was Checked in time, but the final decision still belongs to the Head Umpire.

  • If the batter accumulates three Strikes, then he is Out.

  • If a Batter hits a ball and it lands in Foul Territory, then that is a Foul Ball.

  • A Foul Ball counts as a Strike with one exception. If the Foul Ball would be Strike Three, the batter is not out and gets to try again. There is no limit to the number of times this can happen.

  • The exception to the exception is that if the Foul Ball is the result of a Bunt, then that does count as strike three and the Batter is out.

  • If the ball is pitched and it does NOT pass through the strike zone, or if it touches the ground BEFORE going through the strike zone, AND the batter does not attempt a swing, then that is a Ball.

  • A player may advance to first base by accumulating four Balls. This is called a Walk.

  • If a Batter is struck by a pitch, then the Batter is automatically awarded first base. This is called Hit By Pitch (or colloquially, being “Beaned” or a “Bean Ball”). If the Batter was struck while the ball was in the strike zone, if the Batter attempted to swing, or if the Batter did not attempt to avoid the contact, he is not rewarded the base.

  • If a Batter reaches a base safely, they are said to be "on base” or a “Runner.”

Base Running:

  • A player is considered a Runner once he has safely reached base.

  • A Batter that has put the ball into play, but not yet reached first base or been put out also counts as a Runner.

  • Only one Runner may occupy a base at a time.

  • A Runner is declared Out when he is tagged by the ball (or a glove containing the ball) before reaching base.

  • A Runner may leave the base at any time that play is live, but if he is tagged while off the base, he is Out.

  • A Runner may advance partway towards the next base before a pitch is thrown, that is called Leading Off. Leading Off is permitted.

  • If a runner advances all the way to the next base without the ball being hit, or being awarded the base on a penalty, that is called a Stolen Base. Stealing is permitted.

  • A Runner may not pass the runner in front of him. If a Runner passes another Runner, the trailing Runner (i.e. the one who passed the man in front of him) is automatically out.

  • A Runner must stay on the base paths while running. If a Runner exits the base paths (for example, to attempt to avoid a tag), the Runner is automatically out. A Runner sets his own base path while running. The base path is generally considered a space within three feet on either side of the Runner at the point the line is established (that is, the ball is put into play). The base path resets each time the ball is hit or thrown, but the Runner must stay near the preset base lines (i.e. a straight line between the center of each base connecting the bases). That is to say, he cannot shift the base line repeatedly in one direction so often that he is in the Outfield, for example.

  • A Runner is obligated to advance to the next base if and only if there is another Runner behind him.

  • If the base behind a Runner is open, then he is not obligated to run, but may still be put Out if he is off the base and tagged before safely returning to a base.

  • If a ball is caught in the air before touching the ground (regardless of whether it is a line drive or a fly ball), then all Runners are obligated to return to their previous base (this is called Tagging Up) before advancing to the next base.

  • If a Runner is obligated to advance or return to a base, then the defense may put the Runner out simply by tagging the obliged base. (Tagging the Runner will also count as an Out.)

Positions:

All players are responsible for fielding balls in play and trying to get runners Out before they reach base, or failing that, before reaching home and scoring a Run. A ball in play will often be in territory that is covered by more than one player. This means that knowing your responsibilities and assignments is important for all players, and good communication is vital to the team’s success. In the case of a dispute, or if it is uncertain whose responsibility a play would be, the player who is more certain that they can make the play will “Call It” by signaling to the other players that he is assuming responsibility for the play, often by repeatedly yelling a phrase (“Got it! Got it!” or “Mine! Mine! Mine!” are common) and/or waving his hands to shoo other players away. Generally, the first player to call it should be given precedence to avoid delays or fighting that could cause a fielding attempt to fail.

The Battery: The Battery is the duo of the Pitcher and the Catcher. While technically they both play in the infield, the term Infielders typically does not include them.

Pitcher (P): Throws the ball to the batter. Responsible for fielding balls hit up the middle. Responsible for covering home plate if a play causes the Catcher to have to vacate the plate. A strong arm and good reflexes are very important to a Pitcher.

Catcher (C): Catches the ball thrown by the pitcher. Responsible for protecting home plate while the ball is in play. The Catcher is the field general on the diamond. He helps the Pitcher decide which pitch to throw, signaling the desired pitch and location with finger signals. A good Catcher needs strength, stamina, toughness, and intelligence.

Infielders: Infielders are the players covering the infield. In general, infielders attempt to field balls in play before they reach the outfield. As such, Infielders should pay special attention to skills needed to field ground balls, bouncing balls, and line drives. They are sometimes called on to catch fly balls, but such fly balls are normally very high and very short, giving them plenty of time to adjust.

Infielders are also responsible for moving closer to the outfield during long fly plays, so that Outfielders have the option to throw the ball less distance. This is called a Relay. In the Relay, the Infielder is known as the Cut Off Man, because he will cut off the throw and then turn to throw it to the appropriate place.

Infielders need good reflexes, steady nerves, and a good throwing arm, but accuracy is more important than power for an Infielder.

First Baseman (1B): Responsible for protecting first base while the ball is in play. Also responsible for covering the ground between first base and second base, in particular the half closest to first base.

Second Baseman (2B): Responsible for protecting second base while the ball is in play. Also responsible for covering the ground between first base and second base, in particular the half closest to second base.

Third Baseman (3B): Responsible for protecting third base while the ball is in play. Also responsible for covering the ground between third base and second base, in particular the half closest to third base.

Shortstop (SS): Responsible for covering the ground between second base and third base, in particular the half closest to second base. Responsible for covering second base or third base if the corresponding baseman must vacate the base to make a play. Because he has no primary assignment at a base (acting as backup to two other bases), Short Stops need to be smart, agile, and have keen situational awareness to make sure they are never out of position or covering the wrong bag.

Outfielders:Outfielders are the players covering the outfield. In general, outfielders attempt to field balls in play after they reach the outfield. As such, Outfielders attempt to track and catch balls before they land, so they should pay special attention to tracking, catching, and throwing on the move. Outfielders should also be adept at fielding ground balls and balls on the bounce in case of long line drives.

Outfielders must cover a lot of ground, so having fast, agile, players in the outfield helps greatly. When throwing the ball back to the infield, an Outfielder must choose between hitting the cut off man or throwing directly to the appropriate base. A Relay throw is slightly slower, but usually much more accurate. As such, having a strong arm, a good feel for your strength and accuracy in throwing, and the ability to make good decisions on the fly is of paramount importance to an Outfielder.

Left Fielder (LF): Responsible for covering the ground on the third base side (the Left side from the perspective of the Batter).

Center Fielder (CF): Responsible for covering the ground on the third base side (the Center of the field from the perspective of the Batter).

Right Fielder (RF): Responsible for covering the ground on the first base side (the Right side from the perspective of the Batter).

Practice Drills:

4-Bag Tag: A practice drill in which Runners are assigned to each base to practice tagging up after a fly ball. This drill is designed to allow Runners to practice timing, decision making, and direction changes that will be used during the same situation in a game.

Corner Drill: A practice drill designed to allow players to develop fielding and throwing skills. Players are divided in groups of four and stand about ten to twelve feet apart. They practice throwing and rolling the ball to one another to practice fielding techniques, such as keeping your hips low and keeping the ball in front of you. Once a player fields the ball he turns and throws or rolls the ball to the player on the next corner. The group continues around the square, each player throwing to the next fielder.

Fungo: A practice drill in which the coach hits balls to various spots to simulate game situations, like grounders or bouncing plays. The drill gets its name from the specific type of bat the Coach typically uses for this drill. The Fungo bat is lighter and thinner than a traditional bat, allowing for greater control and accuracy in hitting. The coach will generally toss the ball up into the air and hit it on the way down.

Pepper: Another kind of practice drill in which the coach hits balls to various spots to simulate game situations, like grounders or bouncing plays. Unlike Fungo, the coach usually uses a regular bat. Another difference is that the coach tries to hit the ball back to the fielders off of the return throw instead tossing it himself. The idea is for players to practice not only fielding skills, but train throwing control and accuracy on the return throw. The idea is for the ball to be in continuous motion between the batter and the fielders.

Pickle: A type of running drill, also called Man in the Middle or Monkey in the Middle. This drill is designed to practice a chase down, which is a situation that occurs when a Runner is caught between two bases. There is a Runner in between two bases, and he is trying to either retreat or advance to a safe base. The idea for the fielders is to catch him and tag him. The fielders will typically chase a player for a bit and then throw the ball in front of the Runner, forcing him to change direction. This drill requires fielders to have good throwing accuracy and good decision making.

Chapter 6: Osprey Middle School Team Lineups

Summary:

The boys' baseball team lineup.

Notes:

There are three lineups for normal play, one for each starting pitcher (Jayden, Naresh, and Javier). Despite this, the batting order is very similar.

There is a fourth lineup with Tommy Wilson as pitcher. This will be used only during tournaments where the truncated schedule requires more pitchers to cover the large number of games in one or two days.

Tommy Wilson, Wyatt Perrino, and Josh Perrino are a type of pitcher called a Relief Pitcher (RP). These pitchers do not usually start games as a pitcher. Instead, they come into the game for a short period of time to replace a starting pitcher. This is usually done at the end of the game when a starting pitcher is tired, but may also sometimes be due to injury.

Often, but not always, Relief Pitchers have a smaller toolbox than a Starting Pitcher, but the tools they do have may be overpowering in small doses. For example, a starting pitcher might have a repertoire that includes four or more varieties of pitches, while a relief pitcher might have only two or three with one of those pitches being exceptional (like, say, a very fast fastball).

Fastball: A hard, fast, straight pitch. There are three main varieties: 2 Seam, 4 Seam, and Sinker.
2 Seam Fastball: A 2 seam fastball is gripped with the fingers on top of the seams. This fastball is slightly slower, but has a little movement. For a right handed pitcher, the bail tails towards the inside of a right-handed batter. This move, called "Jamming the batter," makes it harder to hit the ball and often results in weak contact that can easily be fielded by the defense.
4 Seam Fastball: A 4 Seam fastball is gripped so that the pitcher's fingers cross the seams of the baseball. This grip allows a straighter, faster pitch. This pitch relies on speed alone to get past the batter, but allows the pitcher more control in placing the pitch.
Sinker: A type of fastball similar to a 2 Seam fastball. It moves vertically (on the up and down axis) to a significant degree; much more than a 2-Seam fastball does, however it also moves less horizontally. Regardless, the sinking motion and relatively low velocity makes the pitch harder to track, and can often cause weak contact resulting in ground balls.

Breaking Ball: A slower pitch with more motion (.i.e. balls that "break" significantly or change direction during flight).
Slider: A medium-to-fast type of breaking ball that breaks horizontally (on the left to right axis) as it approaches the batter. The curve almost always follow the direction of the pitcher's dominant hand. That is, a right handed pitcher throws a slider that moves from his right to his left, so the ball moves away from a right-handed batter. The movement can fool a batter into swinging at a pitch that ends up outside of the strike zone as it tails away towards the plate. Alternately, a batter may decline to swing or even bail out of the batter's box to avoid a pitch that ends up curving into the strike zone.
Changeup: A relatively slow type of pitch that breaks significantly along both the horizontal and vertical axes. The pitch is designed to throw off a batter's timing, since it uses the same arm motion as the much faster fastball. Between the trickery effect and the balls slow speed and increased motion, the changeup is hard to hit and often results in missed swings or weak contact. There are many variations on the changeup, but the results and reasoning are similar regardless.

Chapter 8: Daniel's 6th Grade Class Schedule

Summary:

A copy of Daniel's Sixth Grade Class Schedule

Chapter Text

Class Schedule Rotates:

Any particular class is Monday, Wednesday, Friday one week, then Tuesday, Thursday the next.

Art and Music share a time slot. These alternate days alongside the normal rotation. So, for example, Daniel might have Art on Tuesday and Music on Thursday in one week and then Art Monday, Music Wednesday, and Art again Friday the next week. The following two weeks would reverse. Music, Art then Music, Art, Music.

Home Economics and Shop also share a time slot and rotate in the same manner.

Geography

Mr. Fidalgo

The sixth grade curriculum reviews an America-centric view of these subjects, but also branches out into the world in a more in-depth way than previous grades.

Home Economics

Mrs. Child

Home Economics covers the basics of household planning. Students learn to make a budget, manage credit, and other basic home finances. Students learn to cook basic meals and learn more in depth diet and nutritional information. Students also learn basic household skills, such as sewing and basic home maintenance tasks.

Music

Mrs. Joplin

Sixth grade students will select one music elective; orchestra (includes strings and percussion), band (includes winds and percussion), or choir (singing). The class will focus mainly on learning to use the chosen instrument/voice, but also covers music theory, music history, and music appreciation.

Physical Education

Coach Eriksen

Also called P.E., Phys Ed, or Gym, Physical Education covers basic physical fitness, as well as basic health and wellness education. Aside from doing physical activities, such as running, sports, and exercises, the class also covers basic diet and nutrition, basic hygiene, and sexual education.

Shop covers basic woodworking and metalworking using both hand tools and power tools. Students will be tasked with creating small projects with both creative and utilitarian uses, such as a small piece of furniture, or a home accessory (bird house, dog house, etc.).

Chapter 9: Reading Order

Summary:

This is the recommended reading order for the Heads-Verse and its interactive stories if you want to read them chronologically.

Notes:

This is the recommended reading order if you wish to read the Naughty-Verse in chronological order. There is nothing wrong with reading the stories in release order. I will try to keep this updates as I release more stories, but you know how that goes. I tend to be forgetful.😅
