   Summary

   Darius' life had always been straightforward. If he needed it, it was provided to him; if he wanted it, he could find a way to acquire it. The law of a conqueror, the promise of the privileged. It was the natural conclusion to rationality and sense. It could all be his; it was his by right, perhaps, in the same way a lion hunted the gazelle, he was allowed these pleasures by nature.

   Darius never knew hunger, jealousy, or other peasant-like feelings. He was never lacking anything. He was never left wanting.

    

   Then Darius met Daniel, and a hunger with a mouth so vast the night sky could get lost there opened up and consumed him whole.
