Chapter Text

When I awoke, I was… surrounded by darkness. I tried moving but… my feet felt like they were stuck to the ground. I couldn’t move. It was then that I started to panic. Tears began to form in my eyes as I realized my worst fear came to fruition. I was alone. Honestly and truly alone. The overwhelming feeling of being alone in the dark and not being able to move scared me. I called out for help… but there was no answer. Nobody came. I tried again, calling for someone, ANYONE, to save me… but again, nobody came.

That was until I saw a faint glow in the distance. I know it wasn’t the light at the end of the tunnel since I couldn’t move, but it kept getting… closer to me. I began to panic more since I was unsure what this glow was. As it got closer, however, I could make out the silhouette of… a figure unlike any I have seen before. They were a bit shorter than I was, by about 7 inches, and they appeared to have 5 fingers on each hand. It seemed… barbaric, to say the least. Eventually, it stopped right in front of me. I couldn’t make out any facial features, but I could see that they were wearing a royal purple hoodie, just like me. I couldn’t tell based on their expression, but they seemed confused at why I was here.

They began to speak to me. “Nathan…?”, they asked. I was puzzled. How did… they know my name? They spoke again. “You’re probably wondering how I know your name. Simplest answer I can give is that I… am basically your universe’s god. You died… and if I am going to be frank, you were not supposed to. That was a genuine slip-up on my end. My sincerest apologies.”

Confused, I began to speak. “What do you mean I died? Furthermore, what do you mean it wasn’t supposed to happen?”, I asked the figure. “Who was meant to die in that scenario?” They looked at me, sighed, then spoke again. “If you’re wondering whether the child was meant to die, do not panic, they were not. T’was meant to be the frail old man next to you. I accidentally killed you instead, though. Again, my mistake.”

I sighed in relief; thank God the kid was going to be okay. Still wanting more answers, I spoke up again. “So… if killing me was a mistake… can’t you like… bring me back?” The figure shook their head and looked… remorseful. We stared at each other silently for a few moments before they spoke up again. “Unfortunately, no. Once you die in your world, I am unable to bring you back to it.” My heart sank. “I mean, sure, my job sucked but…”, I said trying, but ultimately failing to hold back tears, “I enjoyed my life… I had everything! A loving wife… a decent house… friends and family… and now I’ll never see them again.” I felt them put their hand on my shoulder. “Hey, it’s alright. I never said resurrection was impossible, I’m just unable to bring you back to your original universe. If you want, I can transport you to a different one.”

I looked at them confusingly. “What do you mean a different one?”, I asked; “There’s more universes out there?” The figure nodded. “Yeah, lots of different universes. Pick your poison. You want video game, movie, tv show, comic…”. “Videogame, please. Any is fine.” I interrupted. Even though I couldn’t see their face, I could tell the figure was annoyed that I interrupted them. “Bit rude of you to interrupt me there. You do realize that by putting me in this position to just ‘pick any’ videogame I could easily make your life a living hell, right?” Confused, I asked them what they meant. “Well, I could drop you into games like Dark Souls or TBOI, or worst of all…”, they paused for a second before their voice became more sinister. “I could drop you into Hello Neighbor.”

I quickly shut my mouth. I did not want to end up in any of those games. Especially not Hello Neighbor. “That’s what I thought.”, the figure said, “Now, I’m giving you another chance to pick the world you want to go to.” I thought about it for some time, but I couldn’t think of anything. The figure seemed to notice my struggle and spoke up. “If you want, I could give you some suggestions that aren’t the ones that I stated earlier”. “Sounds good”, I said whilst nodding. The figure pulled out a book and began flipping through the pages. “Let’s see here…”, they said, “…we have a wide variety of genres that we can filter through. What genres do you enjoy?” Thinking about it for a second, I said “Well, to be frank, I like a lot of genres, so it’ll be hard to find an exact match for me.” The figure… looked like they already knew I was going to say that.

“Well, I can filter out any fighting games since, I’m going to be honest, you’re not the fighting type”, the figure said, still flipping through pages. I lifted a finger to object but quickly lowered it since they were right. While the figure was flipping through pages, I saw them stop and turn back to one they flipped past previously. Again, I couldn’t see their face… but I could feel that they were staring at it solemnly. Eventually, they shook it off and began flipping through the pages again, and after some time they stopped and nodded their head. “I think I found one that you’ll like”, they said, turning the book to face me. I read the description of it and stared at the picture for a few minutes before nodding my head in approval. “Yes, this will do perfectly”, I said at last. The figure closed the book and waved their finger. A portal began to form under me, I closed my eyes and smiled, knowing that I was on my way to my new home…

I was awoken by the muffled sound of a train horn. I sat up and looked around, somehow, I had fallen completely flat on my back, yet… I didn’t feel any pain. I was dizzy, yes, and my sight was blurry but… I could tell I was in the right place. I shook my head to clear my vision and hearing, and right in front of my face was… a flower. “Anyway…”, Dandy continued, “Glenn told me you would be here, so I thought I would come introduce myself.” Glenn... That must have been the name of the figure. “I’m sure the gang would love to meet you!”, Dandy said with a tinge of excitement in his voice. “Come, I’ll introduce you to them!” He turned around and started to walk towards a group of four other characters. Following close behind him, I look around, admiring everything. “These are the other mains; the other toons are either helping extracting ichor or are just hanging out in their rooms. I’m sure you’ll meet those guys soon enough, though.”

It only took a few moments to reach where the other mains were. One of them saw us and started waving, looking eager. “Ah, that’s Shelly, she’s quite eager to meet you”, Dandy said to me with a chuckle. Confused, I asked him what he meant. “Oh yeah, you’ve been out for a while.”, Dandy said sheepishly, “I promise it wasn’t as long as you think, only about a day or two if I’m remembering correctly…” I was taken aback at first, but it makes sense; it explains why I was so dazed when I woke up. Shelly took my hand and walked me over to the other three mains. "So are you meant to be like, a cat or something?", Shelly asked. Despite it feeling like the middle of the day, Astro looked fast asleep. That or he was just shy. “Don’t worry about him, he’s usually quiet.,” Shelly said, before pointing at the last one. “…and last but not least that one is Vee!, Seeing as you're both green, I think you would both get along well!” Vee seemed to look at me up and down before extending out a hand. “Pleased to meet you. Nathanial, I assume?.” “That would be me,” I said shaking her hand, “and please, just ‘Nathan’ is fine”. Vee looked around to make sure nobody was listening and leaned in close to me. “Psst. Just then, a little dog, which looked to be a literal pet rock, walked up to me and stared at me, as if it wanted me to kneel and pet it. “Oh, that’s my dog, Pebble,” Dandy said picking him up and bringing him close to me so I can pet him, “he seems to like you!” “Pebble’s cute!,” I say as I begin to pet the little rock dog’s head. Pebble made a sound that is hard to put into words, but it sounded like a “bwoof.” I looked around the area where we were in and put my hands in my hoodie pocket. “So, what do y’all do around here?,” I asked. Dandy put Pebble down so he could run around and said “Well, every day we send a group of toons down to the lower levels to extract ichor. Since you’re new here, tomorrow the mains can show you the ropes.” Shelly’s face lit up with excitement. “We’d love to help them!,” she said excitedly, “Isn’t that right gang?” I turned to look at the others. Sprout nodded in approval, Astro still seemed out of it, and Vee reluctantly agreed to it.

Dandy turned to me. “Hey, so… we don’t exactly have any spare rooms for you, Nathan.” I looked at him confused. “What do you mean by that?,” I asked him. “Well, the toons have their own rooms.,” Dandy said, rubbing his chin in thought, “However, some toons share a room.” He thought about it for a second before speaking up again. “Actually, come to think of it… I think only Scraps and Goob share a room, since they’re siblings and all.” “Oooh! OOOH! They can share a room with one of us!,” Shelly said excitedly. “That’s a splendid idea Shelly!,” Dandy said with a grin. He turned to look at Vee, who looked a bit distressed. “Vee, your bed is a queen, would you mind sharing a room with our new friend?,” Dandy said, smirking. Vee sighed. “Fine, sure, whatever…,” she said exasperatedly.

“C’mon, Nathan.,” Vee said nodding to the left, “I’ll take you to my room.” Following closely behind her, I could tell that she wasn’t that fond of me. Eventually, she stopped in front of a door with her face on it. “Well, this is it. Don’t get any ideas, though,” she said opening the door and walking inside. Following her, I wondered what she meant by “not getting any ideas.” I mean, I find her attractive, yes, but I know my boundaries. “Here, change into these,” Vee said as she handed me a pair of pajamas, “When you do, you can sleep on the left side of the bed.” I take off my regular clothes and change into the pajamas Vee gave me. Out of the corner of my eye, I could have sworn I saw Vee eyeing me, but I can’t say for certain. Climbing into bed, I drifted off to sleep, ready for whatever comes tomorrow.

I awoke the next day feeling… oddly refreshed. Usually when I wake up, I feel extremely exhausted. This time was different. Getting out of bed, I yawned and scratched my back. Sprout, who was cooking something, turned to me and said “Pancake?.” I turned to look at him. “I would like that, thank you.,” I replied. Sprout nodded in approval and got to work pouring the batter. A few moments passed and Vee came out of her room, looking honestly stunning. “Don’t forget, guys, we’re taking Nathan on an ichor run today.,” Vee said with an annoyed tone to her voice, “We need to show them the ropes.” I had almost forgotten about that. An unfamiliar voice to me spoke up. “Could you let us finish breakfast first, Vee?,” they said. I turned to look to see who it was and saw Astro had been the one to say it. “Also, sorry for not greeting you yesterday, Nathan. I was quite exhausted,” he replied. I gave him a gentle smile and told him that it was all right.

After we had finished breakfast, we went over to Dandy. “Ah, are you guys ready to show our new friend the ropes?,” Dandy said with a smile. Shelly’s face beamed with excitement. “We were born ready!,” she sang. Dandy clapped his hands together. “Perfect, right this way, everyone!,” he said, leading us to a large elevator. As we walked to the elevator, I noticed a bunch of other people hanging out and enjoying the day. From what I could gather, there was a music box-headed person hanging out with a balloon person, a magnifying glass wearing a pretty snazzy blazer reading a book to a young-looking 8-ball character… and a cat-like creature napping on the lap of another character with long arms. I’m certain Dandy or the others will introduce me to these guys eventually. When we got to the elevator, I was taken aback by the sheer size of it. The doors opened and we all stepped inside, except for Dandy. Puzzled, I asked whether he’ll be joining us. Sprout chimed in. “Well… technically, he won’t be joining us in the run. But every other floor he does sell us stuff in exchange for tapes.” The other mains nodded.

Just then, Pebble also ran into the elevator. Dandy, for some reason, was not taken aback by this like I was. “Oh, don’t worry about Pebble,” Astro said, “he usually distracts the Twisteds.” I looked at him confused. “What do you mean by that?,” I asked him. Astro started to speak, but Vee interrupted him. Twisteds are… how you say toons who got taken over by the ichor.,” she explained, “they’re aggressive creatures, so I would recommend staying away from them.” I felt a shiver crawl up my spine. The fact that I would be in danger was not in the description for this. Strangely, though, I felt ready. “Alright, sending y’all down. Good luck!,” Dandy said. The elevator doors shut, and I could feel the elevator going down.

After a few moments, the doors to the elevator opened. Shelly nudged me and said “Come with me, Nathan. I’ll teach you how to extract!” Following close behind Shelly while the others carried out their tasks, she lead me to a machine with a large, red valve attached to it. “All you need to do is turn this large red valve and that’s all there is to it!” I knelt down and began extracting this strange, black substance from… somewhere. Shelly cheered me on, and I suddenly felt a surge of energy, and was extracting the substance faster than before. After I had filled the machine, the light on it turned green. “That’s ichor, if you’re wondering”, Shelly said to me, offering to help me get back up. I took her hand, and she helped me back up. “C’mon, the others are probably almost done by now.” As we headed back to the elevator, I heard alarms blare. Shelly’s eyes widened. “We need to hurry!”, she yelled. Taking my hand, we rushed over to the elevator where everyone else was, except for Pebble. After Shelly and I got in, however, Pebble starting making a beeline for the elevator, making it just in time. Just before the doors closed, however, I could see a pair of arms shoot out and try to grab at us. Before they could reach us, though, the doors shut and we descended further.

“Goob on the first floor is certainly not a good sign.”, Vee said shaking her head. Goob must have been the one with the long arms I saw petting the cat-like one. After finishing a machine, I noticed that the young-looking one had stopped chasing Pebble and instead made a beeline for Vee. I gasped. After about a day or two had passed, I awoke in Vee’s bed. It seems that… someone had brought me here. A few moments later, Vee stepped out of her room, dressed and ready to go. “Mornin’ guys”, Vee said walking past the mains, stopping to give me a kiss on the cheek, “Mornin’ dear”. Astro turned to look at Vee. “Nathan’s staying up here today, Vee, he’s not feeling too hot.”, he said. Haven’t had a chance to do that yet, anyways. For a brief moment, I could’ve sworn I saw Dandy see through my lie, but my worries were quickly abolished. “Alright, hope you get better soon, Nathan.”, he said.

After Dandy left, I felt a pair of arms grab me by the waist from behind. I didn’t even have any time to react before I got pulled back into a hug. Looking back, I see a dog-like creature staring at me with big googly-eye type eyes. It hugged me for a few moments before an origami cat told it to let me go. “Sorry about Goob, stranger.”, the origami cat said. Remembering what Shelly had said a while back; this must have been Scraps. I extended my hand for a handshake. “The name’s Nathan,” I said as Scraps shook my hand “You’re Scraps, I presume? Shelly told me about you!” Scraps smiled and replied, “I had a feeling she would, she is quite the talker!”

 Scraps, Goob and I talked for a few minutes before Scraps said they needed to go elsewhere. I waved goodbye to them, not noticing that someone was sneaking up behind me. A few moments later, I felt a tap on my shoulder. Looking back behind me, I saw… nobody. Shrugging it off, I turned back around, and realized I was face-to-face with an actual ghost. I stumbled backwards, falling flat on my ass. The ghost, and what appeared to be a gachapon wearing a sweater, laughed maniacally. A balloon looking creature walked up to me and extended their arm out. “Sorry about that, new guy”, they said helping me up, “Gigi and Connie can be a real handful sometimes.” After getting back on my feet, the balloon creature started talking again. “Name’s Looey, by the by.”, they said. I shook their hand. “Nice to meet you, Looey. Name’s Nathan.” Looey smiled and replied “Well, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Nathan!”

A few hours had passed, and I had gotten a chance to meet pretty much everyone with the exception of Shrimpo, who was locked in his room for trying to pop Looey for the umpteenth time, according to Poppy, that is. I was relaxing on a couch when suddenly I heard a dinging noise and immediately rushed over to the elevator. The mains had come back, but it seemed that there was an extra person with them than when they left. Shelly rushed over to Dandy. “Dandy! Dandy! We found another survivor!”, she exclaimed. Walking over, I asked Sprout what she meant by “finding a survivor” Sprout looked over at me and said “Sometimes when we do ichor runs, we come across survivors from the ichor incident. Survivors that… haven’t been fully twisted yet.” Dandy walked over and examined the survivor. “She seems to be okay, but she does need medical attention. Sprout, can you and Cosmo heal her up?”, he said. Sprout nodded and called over Cosmo, then the two took the survivor over to a nearby medical center.

“What’s her name?”, I asked Astro. “Yatta”, he replied. “Hey, there’s still some time left in the day, you want to come join us for another quick run?”, Shelly asked. I nodded. “Sure”, I said, “I’m feeling better, anyways.” The mains and I descended a few floors, collecting Ichor, running away from Twisteds, the whole shebang. Everything was going smoothly until about 15 floors down. The lights shut off, so we were in the dark. Everything was still fine until I heard the sounds of… breathing coming up from behind me.

I turned around… and saw a familiar face.

            Staring back at me was… me. A Twisted version… of me. It was MUCH taller than I was, towering over me with ease. It didn’t have any legs, as they were broken off, but seemed to be able to move around with these large hands, seemingly made entirely out of Ichor. I’m not sure if I was going insane, but I’m pretty sure I heard the sounds of… a heartrate monitor? Was this god’s sick and, pun intended, twisted way of mocking me? Both the noises of a heartrate monitor and the lack of legs were more than enough to convince me that this was a twisted trick. Before I blacked out and came to this world, I had asked Glenn how I died, and they said it was a mix between falling to my death and a heart attack. My Twisted self looked at me… with anger. It looked mad that I was alive and it wasn’t. It swung at me with one of it’s large, ichor-like hands, hitting me and sending me flying into the wall. Afterwards, I heard the long beep to signify a flatline. This is just a twisted joke.

            Obviously, I could not fight back against this… thing. So, I did the only thing I could do in this situation. I ran. Tears streamed down my face as the monster chased me. Where was everyone else? Why wasn’t Pebble distracting this… this thing? “SPROUT!? PEBBLE!? ASTRO!?”, I yelled. I kept calling their names, but nobody came to my aid. Why wasn’t anyone coming? I tried again. “Someone?! ANYONE?! PLEASE HELP ME!” In the distance, I saw a faint glow. I immediately recognized it as Astro’s, but it seemed like he ran away as soon as he saw the thing that was chasing me. I was getting tired. My stamina was running low. The blurriness from having tears in my eyes caused me to not have a good awareness of my surroundings, so I tripped on a cord and fell. The monster stopped right in front of me and lifted it’s hand up to strike me again. I closed my eyes, tears still streaming down my face as I prepared to meet my demise again… That was until I heard a bark. I opened my eyes. The monster was no longer on me and was instead chasing Pebble. Out of the dark, I saw Shelly’s hand extend out. “Are you alright, Nathan!?”, she asked concerningly.

            I tried to speak… but I couldn’t. Shelly noticed this and helped me up. “GUYS, WE NEED TO GO. NOW.”, she shouted. Luckily, the last machine had been completed, so we didn’t need to abandon ichor in the middle of a run. Everybody rushed into the elevator, and Shelly pressed a button on a walkie-talkie. “DANDY, BRING US UP NOW. WE HAVE AN ISSUE HERE!”, she shouted. I was curled up in the fetal position in the corner of the elevator, but the last thing I saw before the elevator doors shut was the Twisted version of myself rushing to the elevator. “It’s going to be a while before we get back to the surface”, Astro said, “Why did we need to stop going down?” He immediately noticed that I was clearly not okay at the moment and knew what was going on, deciding to stay silent for the moment. After 15 minutes of silence, we finally reached the surface. Vee, being the sweetheart she is, picked me up and carried me out of the elevator. I was still having a panic attack, so I couldn’t really tell what was going on, but I could tell that the mains were telling Dandy what had happened. Dandy looked concerned for my wellbeing and pointed over to the elevator to the toon rooms.

            We went down to the level where the Mains stay, and everyone walked over to the TV area. Vee gently set me down on the couch, and sat next to me, the other mains following suit. “What happened, dear?”, she asked. Astro spoke up. “I’m willing to bet they saw their Twisted counterpart.”, he said. Vee turned to look at me. “Is that right, Nathan?”, she asked. Still too traumatized to speak, I simply nodded, trying to hold back tears, but ultimately failing to do so. “If it makes you feel any better…”, Astro said, “I felt the same way when I saw my Twisted counterpart.” I looked up at Astro, wiping the tears from my eyes. I had finally mustered up the courage to speak. ”you… did?”, I asked softly. Sprout nodded. “Oh yeah, it’s only natural. We all reacted the same way. We know how it feels, dude.” Shelly put her hand on my shoulder. “I told Dandy what had happened, and he said he has no idea why there’s a twisted you…”, she said, “You were never a character on the show…” Vee nodded. “Yeah, you just showed up. The fact that there’s a Twisted version of you is… concerning to say the least.”, she said. Astro spoke up. “We’re here for you if you need it, Nathan”, he said, “If there’s anything you need, you can talk to us, alright?”.

            I thought about it for some time. “I need a hug from Goob”, I said, “he’s really fluffy and his hugs are unlike any other.” The mains nodded. Goob’s hugs were the best. The fact he’s doing it for free too is also good. “We can make that happen”, Sprout said, walking over to the elevator. A few minutes later, I felt Goob’s arms wrap around me again for a hug. The other mains joined in, making a group hug to make me feel better. After about 20 or so minutes, Goob had to go back up, but the mains stayed in the group hug. Later that night, when me and Vee were laying in our bed. I turned to look at her. “Hey, Vee… can I tell you something?”, I asked. Vee looked over at me and said “Sure, what did you want to say?” I put my hand on top of hers. “I just wanted to say how grateful I am that you guys helped me out back there. Thanks for that.”, I said with a soft smile. Vee smiled back. “You’re welcome, dear~”, she said. With that, the two of us drifted off to sleep together.

I woke up the next day feeling refreshed, like always. Of course, I was still in that phase of the morning where I’m tired, but that’s neither here nor there. I scratched by back and walked past the calendar, glancing at it quickly. I quickly rushed back over and saw that the day a week from today was circled. The writing on the day marker said, “Vee’s Birthday!” Fuck. I had completely forgotten Vee’s birthday was next week! I rushed out of the room and ran smack dab into Sprout, knocking us both to the floor. “Sorry about that, Sprout!”, I said offering to help him up. He took my hand and waved it off. “No, no, it’s fine!”, he said. He then asked me: “so why were you in such a rush to leave Vee’s room?” I looked at him. “Okay, so… Vee’s birthday is next week and-“ Sprout interrupted me. “You wanted to do something for her?” I looked perplexed. How could he have known what I wanted to do? “Follow me”, he said, “If you want, Cosmo and I will teach you how to bake a cake.”

I didn’t really get much of a chance to talk to Cosmo yesterday, only saying hello to him and introducing myself. I felt like this would be a good way to bond with him. “Sure, that would be nice”, I said nodding. I’ve never been in Sprout’s kitchen before. Come to think of it, I haven’t been around much of anywhere since I got here. Usually only hanging out with the mains in Ichor runs. “It’s just over there”, Sprout said pointing to the kitchen. It seems as if Cosmo, a swiss roll-headed toon was already there. At first he looked bored, but upon the first sight of Sprout, he perked up. Cosmo looked perplexed that I was there. “Who’s the new guy?”, Cosmo asked. I looked confused. “I’m… Nathan, We met yesterday, remember?”, I said trying to jog his memory.

Cosmo still didn’t recognize me, but that was fine. We can bond during this, I suppose. Sprout put his hand on my shoulder. While I did let Shelly and, obviously Vee, put their hand on my shoulder, I brushed Sprout’s hand off, subconsciously giving him a disgruntled look afterwards. Sprout didn’t seem to be put off by this, though, and neither did Cosmo. Anyways, Sprout pulled out  large cookbook and placed it on the counter. Standing next to him, I could see that the cookbook included many recipes for treats and other food based off of the other toons, such as pizza shaped like Razzle & Dazzle, Goob-themed spaghetti, Astro cookies, a Dandy popsicle for some reason and a Cosmo-themed swiss roll, which seems a little too on-the-nose.

Eventually, Sprout landed on a page with a beautiful looking cake on it, seemingly for the main’s birthdays since the frosting on it can be interchanged depending on which main’s birthday it is. That’s convenient, I guess. Cosmo chimed in. “Hey, this recipe seems a bit… complicated for the rookie, don’t you think?”, Cosmo asked Sprout. Sprout nodded. “Yeah… this recipe seems too complex for you, Nathan… we should start with something easier.”, Sprout said. Admittedly, they were right, but inside I was a bit offended. Sprout flipped to the page containing the Astro cookies. “Here we go”, he said, “Cosmo and I make these all the time. These should be pretty hard to fuck up.” I played a lot of Cooking Simulator’s Cakes and Cookies DLC so I should have this in the bag. Admittedly, I really don’t think I should be trusted with this task because of some of the horrible monstrosities I made in that game. Regardless, I did make a few actual things in that game…

Sprout turned to look at me. “What do you think, Nathan?”, he asked. I shook my head, hardly realizing that I was zoned out. “Huh? Oh, yeah that’s sounds fine.”, I said nodding. “Perfect!”, Sprout said with a grin, “Let’s get started then!”. Sprout quickly rushed to get all the utensils and ingredients we need in order to make the cookies. I turned to look at Cosmo. “Is he usually like this when you two bake?”, I asked. Cosmo nodded. “Yeah, he’s really into this.”, he said, shaking his head. “That’s why I love him, though”, he said. Right, I forgot that he and Sprout were dating, I’d been so focused on Vee and trying to forget about seeing my Twisted that it’d slipped my mind. “He told you we were dating, didn’t you?”, Cosmo asked me. “Huh? Oh, yeah.”, I said.

Sprout rushed back to the counter; arms full of various baking utensils and ingredients. “Got everything we need!”, he said breathlessly. Despite Sprout saying it was pretty hard to fuck up, we still made a few mistakes making the cookies and needed to start over numerous times. Eventually, though, we completed the cookies. “While we wait for these to cool off…”, Sprout said, “I think it’s time we moved onto the cake.” He flipped the pages until landing on the page with the cake on it. “You can try this one on your own, Nathan!”, Sprout said with a smile, “We know you can do it!”. Interestingly enough, he was right. I felt ready.

I started by preheating the oven, by the time I was done with the batter, the oven would more than likely be ready. I gathered the ingredients and began preparing. The recipe was certainly more complex than anything I had ever made, especially since this was technically my second time ever baking something! Regardless, I was still pretty good on everything. It took a bit of trial and error, but eventually I felt like I got the recipe down right. I poured the batter into a square-shaped pan and put it in the oven. My next step was making the frosting. That wasn’t very hard to do at all, there was already a thing of frosting readily available, I just needed to make it the same color as Vee, which also wasn’t that hard to do.

Sprout and Cosmo were impressed at how fast I was learning. I could swear that they even looked proud of me. Just as I had finished preparing the frosting, the egg timer I set went off, signaling that the cake was done. I took it out of the oven and set it aside to cool. Cosmo and Sprout walked up to me. “Nice job, rookie!”, Cosmo said with a smile, “I’ve never seen anyone be this talented at cooking besides my boyfriend!” I blushed and waved my palm in a playful manner. After both the cake and cookies cooled down, we decorated them, and put them away in the fridge, hoping that they will be preserved for when the time comes.

A week went by, and it was Vee’s birthday. I was tasked with distracting Vee while the other mains prepared a surprise birthday for her. Distracting her was easy since the two of us could just talk for hours and not get bored of each other. Eventually, I got a notification on my phone from Sprout saying that everything was all set up, and that they’re waiting for me. I handed Vee a blindfold and told her to put it on. She, reluctantly obliged, being wary of the situation, but told me that she trusts me. I took her hand and walked her over to the dining area, where everyone was situated.

After a few moments, we stopped and I ran over to where the others were and informed her to remove the blindfold. “SURPRISE!”, we all shouted, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY VEE!”. Vee looked taken aback… like this was the first time someone had remembered her birthday in years. “You guys did all this… for me?”, she said. Shelly nodded. “The whole thing was Nathan’s idea, we’ve been planning this all week!”, she said. Vee turned to look at me. “Darling, is that true?”, she asked. I nodded. “Happy birthday, dear.”, I said to her. Vee ran over to me and gave me a tight hug. We spent the rest of the day celebrating Vee’s birthday. Playing games, watching old episodes of the show, eating cake, the whole shebang. After a while, it started getting late, so we all decided to turn in for the night. Before we went to sleep, Vee gave me a kiss on the cheek. “Thank you for making today wonderful, darling…”, she said with a soft smile. I smiled back. “Anything for you, dear”, I said.

I awoke the next morning dazed and confused. Vee’s room had all these… pastel colors that weren’t there before. Vee noticed that I confused and explained the situation. “Oh, this always happens around this time”, she said, “Dandy’s just decorated the entire place for Easter.” Right, I had completely forgotten that it would normally be Easter where I was from. I guess time moves the same in this world as it did in mine. Regardless, I got up, got dressed, and walked outside. After I got up to where everyone else was, I was immediately tackled to the ground by this sweet-looking rabbit. “Oh my gosh hi new friend!!!!!”, she said. She glanced over at a basket-headed character, who seemed to be glaring at her with disdain. She got off of me and helped me up. “Sorry about that, stranger!”, the rabbit said, “My name’s Cocoa!”. Cocoa… that’s a nice name for a rabbit, honestly.

The basket-headed one, very rudely I may add, pushed Cocoa aside. “My name’s Bassie.” She extended her hand for a handshake. I stared at her for a moment or two before shaking her hand. “Nice to meet you, Bassie. My name’s Nathan.”, I said. I could tell right away that Bassie was smitten by me. I think she could tell that I could tell, so she immediately pulled back. After looking around at the lobby for a little longer, I noticed that Rodger was talking to an egg-like character, and Flutter was… well she wasn’t really “talking”, but she was communicating to another butterfly. I decided that I wanted to converse with the people I was unfamiliar with before whatever festivities Dandy had surely planned for today started. I started with the egg one.

Walking over to Rodger and the egg, I could tell that the two were most likely friends. Rodger spotted me and waved. The egg character turned around, seemingly confused at my appearance. “Eggson, I’d like you to meet Nathanial. They’ve been staying here for quite a while now.” Eggson smiled and extended a hand out. “Pleasure to meet you, Nathanial!”, Eggson said. Shaking his hand, I replied “Pleased to meet you too, Eggson. And you can just call me ‘Nathan’”. The three of us talked for a solid 15 minutes or so, before I said that I wanted to introduce myself to the other butterfly. Rodger and Eggson waved goodbye as I started walking towards the butterflies.

Flutter almost instantly spotted me and started flapping very excitedly. I learned pretty early on that she converses by flapping in morse code, something that I admittedly didn’t know could be feasible. Regardless, the other butterfly turned around and looked happy. It was hard to tell considering that both he and Flutter don’t have any visible mouths, but I could still tell, nonetheless. “Pleasure to finally meet you, Nathan.”, the male butterfly said. I was startled hearing a voice come out of him. “What the fuck, you can talk!?”, I said, surprised. “Yeah, I get that a lot. Anyway, I’m Flutter’s brother, Flyte!”, Flyte said “It’s a pleasure to meet you as well, Flyte.” I replied, still not used to the whole voice thing. “I assume Flutter’s told you a lot about me?”, I asked. Me and Flutter have actually become extremely close over the past few weeks, quickly becoming best friends with one another. Flyte looked happy. “Yep, and I’m glad you two are getting along so well! Was it hard to learn morse code?”, he asked. I shook my head. “I already knew morse code before I got here, but yeah it was still pretty hard to learn.”, I said.

After about half an hour passed, Dandy walked out of his store. “Ah, Nathan, I see you’ve already introduced yourself to the others.”, he said, “and I’m assuming Cocoa was excited to see you?” I tilted my head in confusion. “How could you tell?”, I asked. Dandy chuckled, and said “You have a bit of a chocolatey smell on you, so I just assumed that Cocoa was involved, she can be pretty energetic!”. I chuckled as well. “Yeah, you can say that again.”, I said. Out of the corner of my eye, I could have sworn I saw Bassie staring at me again. It was obvious that she was into me. “I’ll talk to you later, Dandy… I have to ask Bassie something.”, I said walking towards Bassie. Dandy waved goodbye as I walked towards Bassie, her gaze averting elsewhere as soon as I started. “I know you have a thing for me, Bassie” I said, stopping in front of her. Bassie looked shocked, but I could tell she was faking it. I knew that she knew that I knew she had a thing for me.

“Alright, fine, I admit it, I’ve got feelings for you.”, Bassie said with a bit of snark in her voice. Although her reply was snarky, I could tell that she was anticipating my response. “Unfortunately-”, I said, seeing her expression immediately drop to that of despair, “-I’m already happily in a relationship with someone else.” Bassie looked dumbfounded. “You’re in a relationship already? With who?”, Bassie asked with a tone of jealousy in her voice. “With me.”, Vee said, walking up behind Bassie. Bassie turned her head around fast and looked at Vee with disdain. “Oh. You.”, she said. Vee chuckled heartily. “Do you really think that you would ever have a chance with Nathan?”, Vee said, “You two would only ever really see each other in person for about a month at a time every year!”. This pissed Bassie off. “Oh, yeah, and I bet he’s only in love with you because of-” Bassie started to say something, but Vee quickly cut her off mid-sentence.

“I can guarantee you that whatever you were about to say is untrue.”, Vee said, turning to me. “Right, darling?”. Vee was right, I fell in love with her because she’s smart, and kind once you get to know her. I nodded in response to the question, which seemed to piss Bassie off even more. “Alright. How about this?”, Bassie said smirking, “You and I have a 1-on-1 egg hunt. Whoever finds the most eggs gets Nathan.” Vee smirked. “Alright, you have a deal.”, she said. I wasn’t sure how I felt being a trophy to be won, but at least I was being included in something again. Just before the eggs were being hidden, I had noticed that Bassie snuck off into one of the staff only areas but thought nothing of it since I had just assumed she was using the restroom. After a few hours went by, all the eggs were hidden. Dandy started the countdown, and when it reached 0, Bassie and Vee were off. I had noticed something… suspicious, though. Bassie seemed to be easily able to find out exactly where a LOT of the eggs were.

I decided to investigate. I asked Dandy if there was any way to see the security footage, because I was beginning to suspect something. “Oh right, thank you for reminding me”. Dandy said. Digging into his pocket, he pulled out a set of keys with my name on them. “I give these to all the mains so that they can enter staff only areas, for maintenance purposes.” Taking the keys, I asked him where the security room was. “Oh, I can lead you to it. Follow me.”, he said. I followed Dandy to a room lined with monitors and left to go back to judge the egg hunt. One of the monitors was where the egg hunt was taking place. I also very quickly noticed that there was a camera in the security office and decided to pull up the logs. At first, the footage seemed normal. However, I noticed something ghastly.

I quickly copied the footage to a blank tape, putting it inside my hoodie pocket. I rushed back to the lobby just in time to hear the buzzer, signifying the event was over. The eggs were counted, and unsurprisingly to me, Bassie had found way more eggs than Vee had and was declared the winner. Vee looked distraught and walked over to me. “I guess this is goodbye, dear…”, she said solemnly. I pulled the tape out from my hoodie pocket and smirked. “Oh, I wouldn’t be so sure about that…” I took Vee’s hand and rushed over to Dandy, who was standing on a podium congratulating Bassie. “Dandy!”, I said, “I have something that you might want to see.” I turned to Vee. “Is it alright if I use your screen, darling?” I asked. They all turned to look at me. “What did you find?”, Astro asked. “This.”, I said, pulling the tape out from my pocket. “I found it in a locker on Vee’s floor” Everybody, including Vee, seemed excited. “Well, what are you waiting for?”, Shelly asked excitedly. “Put the tape in already!” I obliged, getting up and putting the tape into the VHS player.

The intro for the show played, and the title card read: “A New Host?!”. We looked confused. “New host? For what?”, I asked. A few seconds later, it was made abundantly clear that it was a Vee episode. We turned to look at Vee. “I don’t remember any of this…”, she said. The episode started off like one of Vee’s gameshow segments, with Scraps and that brush toon (whose name was “Brusha”, good to know) participating in it. Everything was normal until we heard a familiar voice. “E-excuse me, is this Vee’s game show?” Everyone paused, including myself. The voice coming from this mysterious character was.. MY voice.

Sure enough, when the scene cut to the mystery character… they looked exactly like me. Except they were more… techy, I guess. We continued watching the episode. “I-I’m supposed to be the new co-host…”, the me on the screen said. That’s when it dawned on me. That’s why I was feeling a strong case of Déjà Vu being on Vee’s floor. I was going to be a character on the show, as Vee’s co-host. We continued watching the episode and noticed some strong parallels between what had happened in the episode, and in real life. How Vee started off “hating” me but clearly showed signs of infatuation towards me. The episode continued with Vee trying everything to ignore Nathan, even telling the contestants to do the same, but nothing worked. Eventually, though, show Vee learned that some tasks require help, and she brought on show Nathan as her co-host and eventual love interest.

Guess you were part of the show after all, Nathan.”, Dandy said, frightening me to the point where I fell off the couch.

We stepped onto the train platform and stood there for a solid 15 or so minutes until the train showed up.

            When the train got into the station, everyone boarded it in an orderly fashion. I went towards the back of the train, but Vee grabbed my hand and told me that the mains have their own section of the train, at the very front. I shrugged this off and followed Vee to the front. When we got there, my jaw dropped. It was pretty much identical to the rest of the train, but there was an entire minibar, with stuff free for the taking. I grabbed a bottle of Pepsi and sat down next to Vee.

            “Where to?”, said a voice with a British accent. The conductor of the train turned around, they had the appearance of a gold pocket watch, which would explain the accent. “Ah, I see we have a new person joining the crew.”, he said, “Pleased to meet you, the name is Dyle.” I smiled softly. “Nice to meet you too, Dyle”. I wanted to ask why I never saw him before, but just decided it was probably just a plot hole. “Still, though, I need to know where to take you lot.”, Dyle said. Sprout cleared his throat. “To the city, please.” Dyle smiled and pulled the lever. “To the city we go!”, he said.

            The train ride took a bit, approximately half an hour, but we eventually ended up at the city. Everyone got off the train and made plans with each other. We all agreed to meet up at the same restaurant for lunch and dinner and start heading back to the train station at around 9:30, since Dandy said to be back by 10:15, giving us time to get back on the train. With that, everyone split off in their groups. Teagen, Rodger and Toodles went off to the toy store since Toodles was well-behaved recently, Glisten went over to the beauty salon, and the circus troupe went off to see a show.

            Vee and I decided to go to the arcade, since I’d been itching to go there since we left Vee’s floor. There were plenty of arcade games to choose from, hell, there were even some I recognized from Gardenview. They must have rented out some of their machines.             We walked to the restaurant and I had to admit, it looked REALLY fancy. The toons were separated based off of their rarity, and each got their own table. Common toons, like Poppy, Cosmo, or Shrimpo, had the largest table, since there were the most of them. Uncommon toons such as Brightney had the second largest, Rare toons like Blot had a slightly smaller table, and even though there were only 5 of us, the mains got a pretty sizeable booth. I’ll just tell Dyle to remove the stops from the logs” After thinking about it for some time, I agreed. I do want to know what being at the beach late at night is like. So, with that, me and Vee headed off to the train station, where Dyle was already waiting for us. “I told him to meet us here at this time”, Vee said. I nodded, and we boarded the train. A couple minutes later, we arrived at the beach and got off the train.
