Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

The sun was beating overhead at this hour. It had become almost unbearable, especially to the Cenozoic inhabitants like Martha the wooly mammoth. There were various creatures among the reserve. Ranging from the giant invertebrates to the mighty tyrannosaur siblings.

They were all tended to by their rescuer, Nigel Marven. But things were about to get really weird. As the dinosaurs and prehistoric fauna of the park would go about their day, a strange occurrence would happen involving a portal in time, different from what the humans used to go back and rescue their animals. Of course no animal suspected anything of the sort.

Theo the young male triceratops had grown agitated in his pen. The heat and lack of any of his kind was beginning to wear down on his mind. It was increasingly infuriating. He once again butted his head into the tree that he always attacked. Oh how he longed for a companion, someone real like him.

His neighbors were his worst enemies. There was the calm and reclusive Terrence. A complete opposite to his rageful and violent sister, Matilda. The two had gotten into a scuffle months back in which Terrence nearly didn’t make it. Then there was that one time where Matilda went on a destructive spree. No lives were lost but they were close calls.

Theo had witnessed Nigel getting chased, and if it wasn’t for the gate, he would have gladly attacked the young female. Nigel was the closest thing to a companion he had.

In the more Savannah part of the park was Martha, eating her food while watching the baby elephant play around. Unlike Theo, she had become happy with being without her kind as she found a new family with the elephant herd. While they looked strange compared to her she was still accepted and she wasn’t going to turn them down.

The elasmotherium on the other hand was solitary and unbothered by any thoughts of his kind. While he occasionally missed sparring with other males to prove he was stronger or spreading his offspring with females, he liked the new home he was in. Even if it was quite hot.

The terror bird was of the same idea as he almost found it like an infinite food source. It took him a while to adjust but after getting food every day, he became very calm and playful with the humans. Unlike his competitors.

The Saber Tooth had officially become a full familiar. They had forged the ultimate pride bond. The two children were recognized into the herd and treated as such. The father was now more of a tired man than the angry and spry predator he used to be. The mother was about the same.

The bugs had become perfectly accustomed to their new home. The free meals had become much better than competing for food, especially when their home burned up, last they saw. The three species had coexisted in the foliage, being tended to by Headkeeper Bob.

The ornithomimus flock had become settled down and relaxed with one another. No stress had befallen them and mating season was over, the babies had grown into juveniles now and were showing signs of thicker feathers.

Rascal the Troodon couldn’t be like the others as he was stuck in his small cage after all the trouble he caused. He got quite lonely just sitting there, alone under the leaves and bushes, but right now it was a quiet paradise of shade.

One other happy individual would be the Deinosuchus. Relaxing under the water still full from the Parasaurolophus she had eaten back at home. She was very pleased with her territory as it was a great depth, food was plentiful, and the sun was overbearing on her body.

The same could be said for the privileged Microraptors who were living in Nigel’s home with the other modern day reptiles. There they got birdseed, pets and scratches, and a safe haven. They were definitely a happy bunch.

The happiest of all of the animals had to have the herd of titanosaurs. No longer having to migrate for food or escaping deadly plumes of volcanic chemicals proved to be very good to them. They all would bask in the sun and consume as much vegetation they wanted.

As all the animals began to go into an area of shade, the fabric of time began to split and absorb them and they were gone just like that. The only question was where they had gone.
