If It Worked Out: After Himmel

Summary:

Even if Frieren realized Himmel's feelings, even if she reciprocated them in time, he's STILL only human. Now that he's gone, those she's reconnected with over the years may be able to help her through it all

Notes:

The few OCs in this story are Frieren and Himmel's kids; they were introduced during the Parenthood Arc of the previous work in this series, Frieren Returns (suggested but not necessary reading)

Chapter 1: The Burial

Chapter Text

Frieren watches the dirt slowly engulf the coffin

Wow. He's really gone

That was an... interesting half century or so they had together. Pretty fun, actually. Stressful at times, but... yeah, fun

Those brow-beating comments she overheard at the ceremony don't bother her that much really. The kids aren't crying either, why should she?

Sure it was a bit sudden, but... They all knew it was coming

...

She squeezes her hand. For the first time in years, the ring on her finger starts to bother her

He's really gone

It's over

His corny, showy displays of affection

His obnoxious gloating over his good looks

Fuck he WAS handsome though...

Feels like only yesterday he'd hold her with those strong, slender hands of his

They only began to truly wither in just the last decade

But even in that frail state, they always made her feel... something...

Safety? Or maybe comfort? Both?

Maybe

Probably

...

But... guess that's over too then

...

...

Well... At least the things she learned from him will stay with her. Guess it's a good thing she got to know him better when she had the chance

...

The last of the coffin is obscured by the earth

He's... really gone...

...

She feels Heiter and Eisen's hands against her. She's not sure when the tears started
