Chapter Text
“Alright, we’re taking a break. A long one, I’m done with this madness.”
Zelda’s declaration is met with exhausted eyes plagued by dark rings. The round table is full of Hyrule’s finest who just saved the land from the Demon King.
“Enough of the celebrations & honors it’s been weeks! Having to put on a face, presenting images of glory, I’m thankful that we’re appreciated but by Hylia have any of us gotten a full night of sleep?!”
Nothing is said letting Zelda’s irritated words permeate, it’s too much effort to speak but even if they had the energy they would still be silent in agreement.
Link, Zelda, the Sages & Purah have had no moments of peace since the Demon King’s fall. Recovery was shorter than any of them wished but they had to respond to the people’s outpouring of honors. The return of Zelda is nothing to scoff at & neither is Link’s second victory over evil.
It’s been a month-long festival for the group, each member a sun with a solar system of thankful citizens. At the start it was a fun contrast to the constant unease of doom but as time passed it became draining. The citizens have felt peace but the group hasn’t yet.
“My poor precious Yona is going to have to handle my tasks for Hylia knows how long! The second I reach my quarters I fear I’ll never wake!”
Weak chuckles litter the room, Sidon’s voice without its usual exuberance is quite strange to the ears.
“Oh Goro, I'm so jealous of Tulin right now! He doesn’t know how much his parents spared him.”
Teba & Saki let Tulin have fun for a few days but considering his adolescence they didn’t want him around such craziness. He was reluctant but they took him back home, everyone grew envious as they thought about the young Rito sleeping in his own bed.
“We sure sound grateful don’t we?”
Riju’s remark is followed by her head collapsing into her arms.
“Listen I’m all for gluttony but even I know too much of one thing is unhealthy. I’m tired of eating! Me!”
Link can still laugh but he’s had the worst of it. So many faces blurred with the same questions & answers over & over. He still has his Zonai arm so that’s even more of a spectacle for people, it seems during the Upheaval no one noticed but now everyone wants to speak on it.
“I’ll send a note out, hopefully Harth isn’t too hungover. I definitely want to leave Lookout for a while, Robbie will probably destroy everything but I’m too damn tired to care.”
Purah gets up to start said task, it seems everyone follows in tow. Goodbyes between them won’t even be exchanged until the following day when each of the group retires in a carriage. They all sleep through the trips back home.
It seems mercy isn’t found in Hateno either. Cece in her extravagance planned more festivities in the town. Through gritted teeth Link, Zelda & Purah had to face a few more days of the same madness.
Both Link & Zelda are in bed as the sun comes up, they couldn’t sleep since they just fell into bed moments before. Another night full of activity & today won’t be any different but they refuse, daylight will be wasted for sleep. But before their slumber Zelda makes another declaration.
“We’re going to Lurelin.”
After their sleep they pack, they tell Purah their plan & she decides to join them. It’s another carriage trip full of sleep until they hear seagulls calling & the splash of the sea.
Hesitantly the trio exits their ride, the scent of the ocean is a balm to their senses, a certain peace is in the air but they remain paranoid. The town elder Rozel walks up to them & their anxiety rises.
“Ho ho! Isn’t this a surprise, it’s nice to see you Princess glad to know your return is true!”
Rozel is chipper which doesn’t sound good, another round of celebrations are in tow it seems. With a placated face Zelda responds.
“Oh yes I’m glad to be here. It’s been an eventful few weeks since my return.”
“I could imagine dear princess, well hopefully you’ll find respite here. Though we wish to celebrate in your presence I’m sure you’ve had enough of it.”
Relief washes over the trio, they’ve finally made their escape.
“Thanks to Link we have a lot more homes than before so you each can make use of them for however long you’ll be here. Oh & don’t worry about payments, that will be our gift of celebration.”
“Are you sure Rozel? There-“
Rozel raises a hand to Zelda’s words with a content smile.
“We here in Lurelin have no worries & neither will you. Enjoy!”
With that they unload their stuff into a pair of homes, one shared between Link & Zelda while Purah occupies the other.
“Really keeping up the faux lovers of Hyrule act up aren’t you?”
The pair roll their eyes at the Sheikah, it’s somewhat of an inside joke between anyone who knows the situation. No one fights the rumors considering Link & Zelda do share a bed but in reality they’re more akin to siblings who find comfort in each other’s presence. It’s also a trauma response in many ways & with the whole Upheaval they aren’t going to be apart for a while.
“Ah yes the Princess with me, her Hero lover who takes too many glances at the burlier men of Hyrule.”
Link wraps an arm around Zelda’s waist, the two women laugh at his performance. Among their closest friends Link’s sexuality is known, between the Calamities’ defeat & the Upheaval Link figured himself out. He’s had a few lovers to sate himself but thankfully they respect his privacy even though bedding the Hero is quite a brag.
“Oh yes my dearest lover, I expect a ring by the end of our vacation.”
Zelda can barely hold her words as laughter rises.
“Okay lovebirds, I’ll see you when my body decides it’s had enough sleep.”
They retire into their temporary beachside homes. After fully getting comfortable sleep comes easy & for once in a long time it’s blissful.
The morning greets them with calm crashing waves, it’s a long wake as they take their time getting out of bed. Once they do they are in awe of their view, crystal clear waters with vibrant sea life underneath. The townsfolk are all going about their day as normal, which is a normalcy the trio desperately craved.
“I never thought I’d know what a good night’s sleep would be ever again.”
Link stretches & yawns getting his morning routine prepared.
“It seems the Goddesses have given us mercy for once.”
Zelda remarks, swirling a small spoon in her cup of tea.
“All those prayers had to be for something right?”
They laugh, after their morning routine they start to walk around enjoying the soft sand on their feet.
“Well would you look at that?”
The pair look around to find the familiar voice’s source, quickly they see ruby red hair & vibrant fabrics.
“Riju! It seems home wasn’t peaceful for you either?”
The Gerudo rolls her eyes with a huff.
“Oh Zelda, I don’t know why I thought my sisters wouldn’t be eager to celebrate. You couldn’t keep them from partying even if the Heroines condemned it.”
“I wonder if anyone else had the same idea huh Zel?”
Riju laughs then gestures her hand out to the water.
“You may see streaks of red & green dancing in the waves. A king & queen in desperate need of some quiet.”
“Oh it’ll be lovely to see Yona again especially here, we’ll actually hear ourselves speak.”
“Anyone else joining our haggard party? Seen Yunobo rolling around?”
Riju smirks, shrugging her shoulders.
“Haven’t seen him, I know Gorons aren’t so concerned with parties so maybe he actually got the peace he wanted.”
“Well Zel it looks like Hylia’s mercy is easier for certain people.”
“I guess so. You’d think being a dragon for many millennia would give me that grace.”
The trio laugh.
“Too soon Zel.”
“Better to laugh then mourn.”
Following their reunion with Riju they go to the dock, buy some fruit from Mubs to snack on while relaxing. It isn’t long before they see the familiar streaks of red & green. The Zora notice the pair & rise their heads above the clear waters.
“Zelda! Link! What a lovely surprise!”
Link shoving a large piece of fruit in his mouth waves, Zelda smiles waving as well.
“Sidon, Yona! It seems our quest for peace has brought us together.”
“Oh yes, home was not even close to being the solitude I hoped for! But thankfully my dear Yona suggested we come here!”
“Great minds think alike, Zel suggested coming here too.”
Link speaks with a full mouth causing Zelda to giggle.
“Yona it’s lovely to see you again, I missed your presence at the celebrations even though you’re fortunate you missed them.”
“Glad to see you safe & sound Princess. As much as I wished to join Sidon, someone had to hold down the fort, especially as Dorephan was still recovering. I got a taste of the chaos & I’ll agree that I’m fortunate.”
“How is Sir Dorephan? I heard the town was poisoned.”
“Father is fully well now, hence why me & Yona can retire here. Our town was in dire condition but Link in all his glory saved us from peril! I should be used to his greatness but he still astounds me.”
Link laughs with a blush.
“Don’t act like you weren’t part Sidon! I couldn’t have done any of it without you! It was like Vah Ruta all over again but this time you actually could battle with me.”
“Oh Link you flatter me but I was merely along for the ride.”
”You don’t become a great sage & king on the same day by being along for the ride Sidon. If I’m amazing then so are you.”
Sidon blushes, the women laugh.
“Tread lightly Link, I don’t need you taking my dear husband.”
Yona laughs, kissing her husband’s cheek deepening his blush.
“Don’t worry Yona, I know where his heart belongs.”
They all catch up for a bit until the Zora resume their swim. Zelda decides to look for Purah so Link takes this time to walk around more.
He walks along Rimba Beach looking at the giant dagger glyph glowing on the ground. His mind wanders to the ancient Queen Sonia, this is where he saw Zelda witness her murder. He wishes he got to know more of her, her fate was too cruel. To have such a powerful person taken like that it’s unfair. At least she helped him recover Zelda to her normal state, he’ll have to make sure to ask Zelda about her if the memories aren’t too raw.
He gets pulled out of his thoughts by someone humming, it’s familiar but not enough to recall anyone. He looks around & quickly finds the source, this man isn’t hard to miss by any stretch of the imagination.
Tauro is on one knee collecting some of the glowing glyph’s sand in a small jar, closing & shaking it. It still glows though it’s separated from the glyph, he quickly takes out a notepad immediately writing down his findings.
“Even at home the research never ends huh?”
Tauro is a bit startled but quickly shakes it off seeing who it is. He basically drops the jar & notepad in excitement.
“Link! What a coincidence! It’s great to see you!”
The man stands over Link with raised fists clenched in joy, his smile is big as always. He’s in his hometown’s attire, a cropped sleeveless red shirt & loose shorts seen all over Lurelin. His jewelry is still on & of course he has his magnifying glass.
Though Tauro always prioritizes comfort over modesty, Link likes seeing him Lurelin casual. It does a lot to compliment his rugged handsomeness.
“Nice to see you big guy, especially after all this Demon King nonsense.”
“Truly! Without the end of the world sinking us into madness we can actually relax!”
“I’m glad you have but me & Zel were driven to madness, we had to run all the way here to have some tranquility.”
“Really? What happened?”
Tauro looks like Link told him a great revelation.
“Be blessed you missed the celebrations of Zelda’s return & the victory over the Demon King. At first it was fun but man, us & the sages were lucky to get an hour of sleep each night for about a month.”
“Ah I was wondering why the Gerudo Chief was here along with the Zora King & Queen.”
“Yeah but the kicker is we thought going home was our answer & no it was the same. Hence why we’re here.”
“Of course, the town of no worries. The perfect escape.”
“Exactly.”
“The Princess with you?”
“Yeah & Purah. A merry group of haggard bastards.”
Tauro laughs, which Link enjoys hearing.
“Can’t wait to see her, I’m glad she’s doing okay! I heard about the whole draconification thing, can’t believe she took that on.”
“Yeah but I’d expect nothing less from the woman who saved my life.”
“I can see why you fell for her.”
The way Link’s face drops concerns Tauro immediately.
“Oh sorry! Did I overstep? It was rude to speculate-“
“No worries Tauro I was just surprised by your response.”
Link laughs it off, though he doesn’t know Tauro that deeply he’s comfortable enough around the guy to forget he doesn’t know about him & Zelda’s situation. He sees the embarrassment all over Tauro’s face so he quickly changes the subject.
“So I saw you were observing the glyph. Anything interesting?”
Tauro seems to shake off his anxiety with the subject change & gets back to his giddiness.
“I don’t know much about the glyphs, Paya said Impa was investigating them but I haven’t got the opportunity to talk to her about it. I know there’s many spread across Hyrule & I didn’t know one was right here in my home. I’m currently just doing crude research but I’m excited to bring it back to the team.”
Link realizes that he likes to hear Tauro talk, the passion is earnest & comforting.
“You should’ve asked me about them. Just like the slabs Wortsworth had me find, I went to all the glyphs & figured out what their purpose was.”
Tauro’s face brightens with curiosity, he picks up his notepad from the sand.
“Can I ask you now? I’d be as pleased as pickled pike!”
The man’s excitement reminds Link of a kid, along with his fish centered dialect it charms Link.
“Of course Tauro.”
Link explains away & Tauro eagerly writes down every word. Luckily for Tauro, Link has his pad with him so he can show him the pictures he took. The man’s joy never fades, Link usually hates explaining things to people but with Tauro it’s easy. He almost gets the sense that maybe Tauro likes hearing him talk.
“Link, you should teach my team sometime! You’re really good at this!”
“You think so?”
Link is a bit surprised, he isn’t unfamiliar with teaching. He’s trained the new set of knights with what he was taught but that’s easy for him. Teaching what Tauro does? That’s another lane he’s completely clueless about.
“Yes! You never waste a word or stumble on them & you have pictures to show since you’ve been all over Hyrule! You’re a great fountain of knowledge!”
Link blushes slightly.
“Didn’t think I was anything of the sort.”
“Think about it! You’ve had to traverse all of Hyrule twice gathering information, solving temples & many puzzles. You went through all three Lomei labyrinths. I couldn't even do that! That doesn’t even include the sky islands or depths!
It may be under the notion of saving the world but you are a researcher Link! We gave you the Survey Team fabric as an honorary member but honestly you should be the chief not me, you’ve bested all of us in terms of discovery! We all work under your shadow!”
Link is at a loss for words. Tauro definitely has a talent in encouraging someone. Many in the survey team have talked about it, they say his approval is the vessel they take on a journey to better themselves.
“Wow Tauro, you sure know how to make someone feel good about themselves.”
”I think King Sidon has me beat in that regard. When I met him he made it seem like the fate of Hyrule was in my hands.”
Tauro laughs, Link can agree but he must admit Tauro’s encouragement feels different.
“I mean if it weren’t for you I never would have found Mineru so he’s not completely wrong.”
“You would’ve managed there’s no way you couldn’t.”
“Oh come on don’t be modest, you’d think a guy who wants to run around naked wouldn’t be.”
Tauro laughs.
“Feeling the breeze on my skin & swelling my ego are two different things.”
“Oh yes because admitting you took part in saving Hyrule will make you a megalomaniac.”
“You never know!”
“Well according to you I’m a fountain of knowledge & I’m using said knowledge to say you could never be one.”
“Got me there Link.”
They both laugh, Tauro continues his task & Link takes a seat nearby. He sifts his Zonai hand into the glyph’s sand, a faint glow rises in the copper parts of the limb.
Link can feel Tauro’s eyes on his arm, he’s not the first nor will he be the last. It’s usually an uncomfortable experience as most people look at it as an anomaly. Tauro is Hyrule’s top Zonai researcher so Link knows those eyes are full of wonder more than anything.
“It’s rude to stare, Chief.”
Link smirks side eyeing the researcher, Tauro picks up on the playful nature.
“I apologize dear hero but you know I can’t resist a Zonai King’s limb.”
“Who told you that part of the tale? I kept those cards pretty close.”
“I’m not lead of the survey team for chum scraps y’know? That’s a male Zonai arm but I could tell it’s of high status due to the use of copper. Kings also had a great wealth of powers unlike typical Zonai. I remember one being the ability to ascend through objects which I thought I saw you do to get into the final ring ruin but according to you I was just ‘seeing things’ right?”
Tauro’s now side eyeing Link with a smirk of his own, the hero is huffs knowing he’s guilty.
“I don’t recall that.”
Link whips his face away, laying a thick layer of sarcasm in his words. Tauro rolls his eyes & chuckles.
“Sure.”
“So if you knew the whole time then why restrain yourself? I know you get uncontrollably excited about these things.”
“I noticed your discomfort when talking about losing your arm, I knew there were more details but I wasn’t going to chuck a spear into something you were hesitant to speak about. As much as I wanted to ask about it I didn’t want to trudge up anything.”
A strange feeling arises in Link’s gut, he can’t believe Tauro read the situation. Not only did he read the situation but held back on his own instincts as a researcher to not add insult to injury.
“If only more people were like you Tauro.”
“How so?”
“During the whole mess of the Upheaval no one asked about my limb aside from the sages & close friends so I thought most people didn’t care. Now I realize they just weren’t paying attention, I feel their eyes burn into my arm.
I know they aren’t trying to be rude & I understand it’s unusual but it does make me feel uncomfortable. Yeah it gives me abilities & honestly it feels just like my old arm at this point but when I get those stares it just reminds me that my arm was burned off & that this isn’t my real arm.”
As he was talking Link raised the limb in his view. Tauro rests a hand on his shoulder which has a pleasant warmth to it.
“I’m sorry to hear that, I know most don’t mean harm but it doesn’t justify their lack of manners. Also if my staring earlier made you uncomfortable I apologize.”
Link smiles looking at Tauro’s somber face.
“You’re different, you just said you held back in Kakariko. I know your eyes are more observing than gawking. I wouldn’t have minded answering your questions then, your intentions would’ve been obvious so any discomfort would’ve faded.”
Tauro’s face brightens again, Link can’t help but feel warm.
“Well good, I wouldn’t ever want to make you uncomfortable.”
“Thank you.”
Their eyes are locked into each other, a strange frequency is in the air between them. Tauro’s face immediately changes into one of curiosity.
“Can I test something real quick? It involves your arm, it’s nothing strenuous I promise!”
Link wished that moment was a bit longer but he can’t even figure out what that meant so he quickly embraces the change.
“Sure, what do you need?”
“I just want to see if your arm reacts to the sand even if it’s separated from the ground. Can you hold out your hand?”
Link raises his hand, Tauro carefully holds it into position. Tauro gets the small jar of glowing sand, uncorks it, then lightly pours the sand into Link’s palm.
As the cold sand gathers into a small pile in his palm the faint glow comes back. Tauro immediately collects his notepad, writing away his thoughts.
“Do you feel anything?”
“No, it just feels like sand in my hand. Even when I use my abilities there’s a very faint feeling of like, I don’t know, electricity? But it’s barely noticeable at times.”
“Interesting.”
“Why do you think my arm’s reacting this way? I already utilized the glyph’s purpose.”
“Many things come to mind especially with your explanation earlier. These glyphs are from the tears of Zelda after she turned, the reaction can be from the tangled fishnet of connections present.
The connection of you & Zelda, Zelda & Rauru, Rauru & the memory, considering what this specific memory is I’d even say Rauru & Sonia. All four of you are directly connected to Hylia so it can be all of it. I wonder if you’d react the same with other glyphs.”
‘Tangled fishnet’ is the perfect description, Link didn’t think of all the connections. But as Link puts his mind to it he should have expected this, whenever it comes to the divine it’s a confusing mess he doesn’t want to wrap his head around.
“Well maybe we can plan a trip around Hyrule to check if the other glyphs cause this reaction.”
Link moves his hand above the small jar & returns the sand back inside. The arm’s glow fades away, Tauro chuckles.
“I’m sure you had your fill of traveling.”
“Yeah if it’s under the guise of saving the world. A trip around the lands with no worries sounds nice. My most peaceful moments were in the most desolate areas surrounded by nature. I’m sure now it would be even more peaceful. I know you’ve travelled, I'm sure you know exactly what I’m talking about.”
“I do, but think I’d just drag you down trying to overanalyze chunks of those fallen sky islands.”
Link thinks of his recall ability & how he can manipulate them. He’s sure Tauro’s reaction would be worth seeing.
“I wouldn’t mind, maybe I could add some insight. I could even take you to a sky island.”
“Really?!”
The pitch in Tauro’s voice reminds Link of a child being told they can have a basket of pastries. Looking at Tauro, a great wide smile with raised clenched fists greet him, it’s the classic tell tale of the researcher’s excitement.
“Yeah, I have access to them. I know Zelda wanted to plan a trip to them, there’s so much Zonai stuff up there it would be a shame for you not to be there.”
“You’re not tugging my line Link? You’re serious?”
“Of course Tauro, I’m not evil.”
“Just tell me when! I’ll be there. Thank you so much for the opportunity!”
Tauro’s excitement is a precious thing, Link feels glad that he caused it. He’s sure the man will pass out when he sees the Temple of Time in person but he’ll resuscitate him. The reaction alone will make it worth it.
Link’s stomach starts to growl loudly, interrupting the two. They didn’t notice the sun was ready to greet the horizon line.
“Ah sorry Link, I kept you too long.”
“Don’t worry Tauro, my appetite is an endless chasm. I’m surprised it held out this long.”
“Well if you don’t mind, me & my pa got some good catches this morning. If we head back now I could whip up a great meal in an hour.”
“Really?”
“Yeah! Come on, let's go!”
Tauro somehow manages to gather his things & grabs Link’s hand, almost dragging the hero back into town. Link finds his footing quickly, even though he’s thrown for a loop he’s happy to have that big warm hand holding his own.
Notes:
Link still has his arm & no one in Hyrule forgot who Link is. Also the gang isn’t unappreciative of the people’s adoration it’s just overwhelming immediately after months of traversing Hyrule, having an intense battle & being a dragon for thousands of years.
Here’s the old fic, see if it compares or not lol. I will obviously reimplement ideas from it into this story so it this can be a compare & contrast thing.

ONE MORE THING back when I first posted the OG fic I got some lovely art from Michoodles, which means a whole fucking lot to me. So even though I put the parent fic in purgatory that doesn’t mean their art shouldn’t be seen so take a look.

Chapter Text
“Isn’t this lovely Zelda? My body is chu chu jelly.”
Purah & Zelda lay face down on soft mats, both just experienced Chessica’s talents. They could both break down into tears with how much they’re in bliss.
“I’ll never be able to move again. Link will have to carry me.”
“Speaking of, where is Linky?”
“I don’t know, he wanted to be on his own for a bit.”
“You think he’s searching for a new hunk?”
“Purah.”
The Sheikah laughs at Zelda’s shock.
“What? He’d be dumb not to be, Lurelin has some great options.”
“You’re so salacious.”
“Y’know Tauro’s here? You think Linky would go for him? You need the hero’s courage to handle him.”
Zelda laughs in disbelief.
“Purah I’m not going along with your gossip!”
“Oh come on, it's fun. You don’t want that for Link? You know how many times I see people break their necks to get a look at Tauro? Hell, I'd take a chance in another world where he wasn’t a student of mine & also one where he’s fond of the softer sex.”
Zelda looks at Purah with wide eyes, the Shiekah laughs.
“Purah! Is this known?”
“Yeah it’s known, he never hid it. I mean his style of dress is quite flamboyant even for a Lurelin.”
“I guess I never saw it.”
“You & Link were on your diplomatic trips. He had a liking towards the Sheikah guards, poor thing was so eager to love. I told them if they broke his heart or used him I’d break their limbs.”
“I can’t believe I missed all this. Did he ever have a relationship?”
“I thought you weren’t one to gossip Princess?”
Purah laughs, raising a brow to Zelda who’s flushed.
“Well there’s no stopping you so might as well join.”
Purah rolls her eyes, humming with skepticism.
“He did get into a relationship with one of the Sheikah guards. It was a year-long ordeal.”
“What happened?”
Purah’s face darkens a bit, Zelda grows concerned.
“I don’t know what happened, all I know is the guard is gone & Tauro buries himself in studies. His chipper nature was absent from that day until you appointed him chief of the Survey team.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah it was tough but as you can see he got through it.”
Zelda can sense Purah knows more than she’s leading on but with how disturbed the Sheikah’s spirit seems to be talking about it she won’t dig further. A moment of silence resides between them.
“So how much you wanna bet Link & Tauro will get it on tonight.”
“Purah!”
The Sheikah's wager dies with Zelda’s stubbornness. When they can feel their bodies again they decide to walk around the town more. As the sun starts to descend the duo grows an appetite.
The scent of seasoned fish catches them, they look for the source. They find a group of cooking pots surrounded by tables. In the chaos Zelda sees a familiar figure & pulls Purah with her to greet him.
“Tauro! How nice to see you!”
The figure turns around but it isn’t Tauro. The man looks like Tauro but boasts a full beard, the hair is the same but the white strands are spread throughout. You can see his dark blue eyes more easily & he looks a bit older than the researcher. He also seems to be more modest wearing typical head to toe Lurelin attire but with a unique open shawl like vest draped over his shoulders.
“Close but no cod there Princess, ya got Tauro’s old man.”
Zelda flushes in embarrassment, Purah’s chuckling doesn’t help.
“Oh I’m sorry sir, I didn’t mean to call you someone else.”
The man laughs, Zelda is a bit freaked out how his smile is the exact same as Tauro’s.
“No worries there Princess, I don’t blame ya. My boy is a thief! Stole my looks from birth. The name’s Bov, it’s an honor to meet ya.”
Bov puts out a hand & Zelda takes it. After the exchange he looks at Purah beside her.
“Ah nice to see ya again Purah.”
“Ditto Bov, how’s Inea holding up.”
“Has me wrapped around her pretty little finger as usual.”
Zelda raises a brow at their familiarity.
“You’ve met before?”
“My boy had us visit him a few times & wanted us to meet his favorite professor. We kept in touch knowing that Purah was looking after him.”
“He took after you, had to make sure he wasn’t breaking too many hearts.”
“Ya can’t fight nature Purah, Hylia decided to make two generations of heartbreakers. I was for the ladies & he’s for the guys. If that isn’t divine equality I don’t know what is.”
“Still I couldn’t have him running amok while Zelda & Link were rebuilding Hyrule.”
The old friends laugh & Zelda joins. She’s enjoying the banter, Bov definitely has a charm to him.
“So Princess what brought ya to the beacon of peace?”
Zelda explains, Bov listens intently, the way his brows knit are so familiar it’s freaky.
“Not one for the party life? I see, I don’t blame ya. It all had to end at one point. I was a rambunctious bastard in my day but now I’d never recover.”
“I could only imagine, I’m sure you were a monster.”
“He was absolutely ruthless.”
A new voice arises answering Purah, Bov’s face melts into a vision of adoration. The two women turn to see another approaching.
Her eyes are a striking bright blue with tones of green, hair long & curly with those white strands strewn throughout. Her attire is unique, loose like the Lurelin style but with cuts & patterns evoking Gerudo clothing. Her jewelry is another tell tale of the Gerudo influence.
She walks up to Bov who takes her hand & lays a kiss on it. His free arm wraps around her waist pulling her into an embrace.
“Pearl, how has Hylia blessed ya today?”
“Had a reunion, Riju came by to the shop & I couldn’t believe how much she’s grown up.”
Zelda’s eyes widen, this must be Inae, she knew Riju as a child?
“I see reunions are in the stars for us tonight aren’t they.”
Inae breaks the embrace to shake Purah’s hand.
“Great to see you again Purah, it’s been a while.”
“It has, I see Bov is still under your siren’s spell.”
The old friends laugh.
“The foolish fisherman is lucky he’s cute otherwise I would’ve never spared him.”
Bov scoffs playfully, crossing his arms.
“And here I thought I tamed the deadliest beauty of the ocean.”
“I find it hard to believe that she was the deadly one Bov, how many women has Inea saved from heartbreak by taming you?”
Bov keeps his arms crossed putting on a fake pout.
“I think I’m starting to remember that I liked you two apart.”
The women roll their eyes, Inea turns her focus to Zelda.
“You must be Princess Zelda, I’m Inae. It's an honor to meet you.”
Inae offers her hand, Zelda takes it with a warm smile.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you. Might I say your outfit is lovely.”
“Why thank you, made by my own hands.”
“Really?”
“Yes, I learned from the best Gerudo garment maker.”
“I was going to say I recognize the patterns & jewelry.”
“Oh yes, Gerudo town was my home for years. It always has a place in my heart.”
That explains how Inae could possibly know Riju, but Zelda is still curious. Lurelin are usually home bodies, then again her child wasn’t, he must’ve got it from somewhere. So then how did Bov meet her? Men aren’t allowed within Gerudo Town.
Before she can ask two figures rush from the dark evening, they form into two familiar shapes. Tauro halts his run slightly sliding in the sand with his hand holding a frazzled Link who was obviously pulled along. Purah doesn’t hesitate to bump Zelda’s shoulder with a smirk & a wink that screams ‘Told ya!’ which is met with an eye roll.
“Pa, are there any of our catches left?”
“Yeah son, I know there was that one fish ya liked, kept that one spared.”
“Thanks Pa, hi Ma!”
Inae gives her son a soft wave, he quickly notices the other two next to her. He waves at them happily with his wide smile.
“Hi Princess, glad to see you’re okay after, well everything!”
“Happy to see you too Tauro & thank you I’m relieved to be myself again.”
“Also Miss Purah, great to see you too!”
“I had to check up on my star student to make sure he wasn’t slacking at his job.”
“He was gathering sand at the glyph over there to investigate it. I don’t think Tauro will ever slack off when it comes to research.”
Link’s remark attracts everyone’s eyes, for a moment he was invisible behind the bulky researcher who’s still holding his hand. He immediately notices Purah’s raised brow & smirk, she’s never gonna shut up about this. Tauro pulls Link more forward so everyone can see him.
“Link was walking by & found me looking over the glyph. He helped me discover some new things too! I kept him for so long & accidentally starved him so I’m gonna cook him a meal.”
Link really wishes Tauro didn’t say that as Purah’s smirk grows into a wicked grin & looks at Zelda for approval. She does give him mercy by rolling her eyes at the Sheikah.
“Ah Link these are my parents! Ma & Pa, this is Link!”
Tauro still holding Link’s hand brings him closer to his parents. Inae catches Link’s eye first, she’s a beautiful woman which isn’t surprising considering her son but Bov puts Link in awe.
“Woah. You two-“
“Look alike? Yeah the old man claims I stole his looks but I think Hylia knows they suit me better.”
Tauro chuckles, his father huffs.
“Ya wish boy, ya can never beat the original.”
Tauro rolls his eyes.
“Sure old man.”
“Anyways nice to meet ya Link, I see my thieving boy is using what I gave him to get ya on a date huh?”
Tauro slants his head in annoyance while Link’s face turns red, Purah snickers, making Zelda bump her elbow into her. Inae reads the situation & snaps her teeth.
“Leave them be Bov, Tauro’s just using the good manners we taught him. Don’t mind him, Link. It’s an honor to meet you, hero.”
Link’s anxious haze fades focusing on the inviting presence of Inae.
“It’s fine, just caught off guard. It’s a pleasure to meet you two. You raised a fine man.”
“Oh he’s in love.”
Purah mumbles to Zelda who snaps her teeth catching everyone’s attention as the Sheikah giggles.
“I think you need to scold this one too Inae. She’s misbehaving.”
Zelda’s remark makes Inae chuckle. Link is relieved Zelda is in his corner.
“Didn’t know cooking for the man who saved Hyrule would be so controversial.”
“I didn’t either. Tauro, why don’t you go get that catch & your father will prep a cooking pot for you. Then he & Purah will set up the table.”
Tauro smiles at the immediate pout on his dad’s face.
“Sure Ma.”
Tauro, with Link still in hand runs to retrieve the fish.
“Awe, why do I have to prep the pot & set the table?”
Bov relents, Purah laughs patting the man on his shoulder.
“Don’t think you wanna start this battle Bov, we’ve crossed her boy & I’m not gonna find out the true consequence of that. Where do you need me to start Inae.”
“Smart choice Purah, I have everything you need to set up over there. Get on that pot dear, that fish is not getting any fresher.”
Both subjects of Inae’s punishment start their tasks leaving her & Zelda alone.
“Ah princess, I have some tea, let’s relax.”
“I see your parents managed to get one of Robbie’s food storage units, a ‘freezer’ he calls them.”
Link is leaning on the doorway of the home of Tauro’s parents while Tauro is shuffling in said unit.
“Yeah, having contact with Purah has its benefits apparently.”
“One of a very few.”
Both laugh as Tauro finds the biggest porgy Link has ever seen, its stripes are vibrant as if it were alive.
“Holy Hylia Tauro? That thing must’ve destroyed your fishing rod.”
“Not with my Pa’s rods, I don’t even think the Demon King could break one.”
“If only I had one when me & Zel went under the castle.”
“If only.”
Tauro gets a good hold on the fish but Link can tell it’s a slight struggle due to its shape.
“Here, lemme store that monster in my pad. Make this a bit easier for ourselves.”
Link brings out his pad offering it & Tauro raises the fish in acceptance. After a few finger swipes the large fish disintegrates into light blue threads that twirl in the air before entering the pad’s screen. Tauro’s eyes go wide.
“Didn’t think a dead fish could be that pretty.”
Link laughs, he recalls his first experience with the Sheikah Slate years ago. He would collect any random item just to see the effect over & over.
“With this anything can be pretty, you should see my Modulga gut collection.”
“I’m actually quite intrigued.”
“Well how about after dinner, don’t wanna lose your appetite now.”
“Right.”
Tauro gives a smile as he fixes the contents within the ‘freezer’, Link puts his pad back. He looks around the house which is a visual compromise of its two owners. The furniture is typical of any Lurelin but the decor is Gerudo adding a neat vibrance, there’s also a flavor of nautical styling peeking through.
It’s obvious this blend was Inea’s work as the barebone areas full of fishing supplies & nautical chachkis are Bov’s corners. Link is by no means a home decorator but he can tell that certain styles can barely work together so he’s impressed Inae could make three of them blend wonderfully.
“Sorry about my old man & his teasing.”
Tauro catches Link off guard for a second but he huffs.
“No worries, having Purah & Robbie in your life makes you callous. Also I’m a bit of a teaser myself so it’s nothing.”
Tauro huffs back.
“I’m so numb to Purah it’s ridiculous. Back when I was her student she was relentless with me but she took care of me a lot so I know it’s a fondness thing with her.”
Link raises a brow.
“How did I miss that wealth of information?”
“I think you were traveling with Zelda during that time. Pretty useless information if you ask me.”
“Well I think I’m gonna be seeing you more if you’re gonna be in Kakariko & asking Zelda about her experience with the Zonai so we might as well get to know each other a bit.”
“Yeah I understand, if I’m gonna be interrogating your soulmate might as well.”
Link laughs a bit too hard, Tauro looks at him worried he said something wrong again.
“Me & Zel aren’t together.”
Tauro’s eyes go wide with his head tilted.
“Really?”
“Yeah, it’s just a rumor that’s floated around. We haven’t really fought it cuz it’s not common for two friends to always share a bed.”
“Ah, is it like a sibling thing?”
“Kinda, it’s mostly a trauma thing. We’re tied together by some of the worst things you can imagine paired with nightmares only we understand. We were seventeen when this all happened so basically we’re two feral kids desperately hanging on to each other for comfort.”
“I can see why you just go along with the rumor, if people can barely handle your arm I could only imagine them trying to understand you & Zelda.”
“Right? Only the close knit friends around me & Zel know & understand.”
“Well I appreciate that you told me, your trust means a lot.”
“You make it easy so why not?”
Link shrugs which makes Tauro's face grow curious.
“What do you mean?”
“You make me feel comfortable like you’re a close friend which is not easy to get from me. I kinda felt that way the second we met in Kakariko, it wasn’t just that Paya trusted you, it's an energy you have.
That’s why your comment about me falling for Zelda threw me off. I completely forgot you didn’t know anything about our situation. Just like our closest friends I assumed you knew.”
Tauro’s face is warmer with widened eyes in wonder.
“Thank you? I think? That was a lot Link, I’m at a loss of words.”
Link laughs patting Tauro’s shoulder.
“Just know me & Zel trust you a lot & Purah too. She wouldn’t be so openly teasing about it if she thought you didn’t know.”
”What about my parents?”
“If we can trust you we can trust them.”
“Yeah my Pa teases but that old man has a vault.”
“Oh I’m sure.”
They share eye contact again & that strange frequency between them hums in the air. Tauro breaks it yet again.
“I think we should head back, don’t wanna starve you any further!”
Notes:
I thought Purah being Tauro’s professor was a cute idea & with what I have planned it’ll show the heart of that relationship. Also Tauro’s parents! Aren’t they fun lol?

Chapter Text
“So why the move to Gerudo Town? That’s quite an ambitious change for someone barely entering adulthood.”
Zelda & Inae are in the throes of conversation, Zelda has already shared her story to Inae’s wonder.
“When I was a girl a Gerudo named Tovah would come here & sell clothes, jewelry & accessories of all kinds. I was immediately entranced, I couldn’t believe everything was made by her hand.
Whenever she would come by I would scrounge up whatever rupees I’d have & make sure to support her. I’d always ask about her home, her words made me dream of the canyons & golden sea of sand.
As I got older I saw Tovah as a motivation, I started asking her for fabrics to buy & I’d make my own garments. She saw the potential in my work & in our conversations she brought up me possibly being her pupil.
When I grew of age I took her offer. Tovah became my teacher & from my potential grew a gift I’ll forever be thankful for. I helped with her shop essentially becoming her right hand, when she would travel I’d hold down the fort.
Gerudo Town is a wonderful place, I adore the years I lived there. They welcomed me into their culture, I’m forever a sister to the Gerudo which is a beautiful honor.
Looking back I think as a girl I picked up the strong spirit of the Gerudo from Tovah & at that young age it sparked an ambitious desire within me. I had no fear of leaving home to find a new one.”
It seems Tauro’s grace of speech comes from his mom, Zelda is hooked by every word. Her voice is soothing & the spirit behind her words is poignant.
“That’s beautiful Inae, truly! I can see where Tauro got his fearless spirit from.”
“Wait until Bov tells you his piece, you’ll realize I’m barely one half of that wild spirit.”
“Can’t wait to hear, so what happened to Tovah?”
“Ah, after about ten years of my arrival into Gerudo Town she started getting sick & sadly passed from it. She was a fixture to not only myself but her hometown. I was devastated without her presence & started planning on moving again. I had to close the shop as it felt wrong keeping it open without her.
During that time I met Bov at Kara Kara Bazaar & we fell for each other immediately. We ended up being the change we both needed. Once together we traveled around mostly outside of Hyrule due to the guardians roaming about. After a few years of that we decided to settle back here & have Tauro.”
Zelda’s face lights up, she only knew Tauro travelled beyond Hyrule but never got to ask about it.
“I’ve always been curious to see what’s beyond those deep valleys. How did you traverse it?”
“The only way to circumvent those is through the Gerudo desert. It’s an intimidating trip because you have to track everything to survive those long stretches of sand. It can be tedious but as long as you follow the guides the Gerudo outline it’s an easy trip.
But Tauro was showing me some of the Zonai technology that popped up & I see there’s many options for aerial travel. So it looks like we may have a new way to go across those valleys.”
“It sounds nice but I could imagine traveling instead of flying over the valleys is more fulfilling.”
“Oh definitely, you get to see other Gerudo towns that have their own identity. I always adore the transitions between environments that are completely unfamiliar.”
“Hopefully Hyrule can recover fast from this upheaval nonsense, you’re making me want to plan out a trip myself.”
“Ah I’m glad I could be your motivation. Me & Bov were thinking of taking another round soon, maybe we’ll cross paths.”
“Or maybe you could join us. It wouldn’t just be me & Link I’m sure Purah would tag along, Impa probably would too. Having you two would be great as you two have taken the trip already.”
“If there's a solid plan then I’m all for it.”
“Oh of course! This won’t be for a couple of years probably. We have enough time to plan it all out.”
“Just let me & Bov know.”
As if Bov could sense Inae mentioning him, the man walks up to their small table. His face still has remnants of a pout.
“Pearl I prepared the pots, looking at the fish our boy caught. He definitely needs two.”
“Has Purah set up the table?”
Bov’s eyes go wide & scatter in many directions. His face becomes completely unreadable. Zelda gets a bit concerned thinking the man’s hurting.
“Yes she did.”
Inae rolls her eyes at Bov’s stammered words.
“Why did you even try Bov, you look like you’re hurting yourself?”
“Do I really need to help Purah set the table up?”
“Yes, look at what you did to Link, the poor thing looked like he was going to explode.”
“Pearl I can make him a spear or something, as a sorry.”
“I’m sure the Hero has a bounty of spears in his arsenal.”
“But he doesn’t have one of mine.”
“Bov! Set the table, it’ll take you & Purah like three minutes.”
“Okay.”
Bov deflates, speaking in a moody mumble, Inae sighs then gestures to the man to come close. He obliges, once he gets close enough Inae kisses the man’s cheek which sparks a light within him.
“That face is too handsome for a pout, go help Purah, you’ll be fine.”
“Will do Pearl.”
Now in a joyous mood Bov walks off to help the Sheikah, Zelda laughs at the change. Maybe Inae is a siren with how quick she turned Bov into a flustered teenager.
“He always tries to squirm his way out of things. As you saw the man can’t lie to save his life & he knows he can never get away with anything with me but he still does it to ruffle my feathers or maybe he likes it when I scold him.”
“I’m sure it’s a mix of both. I can see mischief in his eyes.”
“Oh you don’t even know Princess. He was a hurricane back in the day, he likes to call me his anchor because I withstood his storm.”
“The things we do for love.”
“Right? But I can’t lie Zelda, I enjoy his mischief. I know I have my own within so it balances out. What he just did is something he’s been pulling since day one of our relationship. I know it’s not malicious, Bov is just being a fool & I like it.”
“You can never beat a love like that. Hopefully I’ll have that one day.”
“Hmm so you & Link aren’t together.”
Zelda’s eyes go wide realizing what she let slip.
“Don’t worry Zelda, I'm not one for spreading rumors. I know most think you’re together but my gut told me the bond you two have is more familial than romantic even if you two aren’t related.”
Zelda calms, Inae is a sharp woman, of course she picked up on it.
“I shouldn’t be surprised, Tauro had to get his observance from someone.”
“Bov has it too, that’s why he was quick to tease about Tauro & Link.”
“That means Tauro probably knows too.”
“Maybe, we’ll have to ask him.”
They both start to hear the rising sound of feet running in the sand.
“Speaking of Tauro.”
Inae says quietly so only Zelda can hear, she laughs just as the Tauro & Link reach their table.
“Hope we didn’t take too long, the pot must be cold.”
“Don’t worry Tauro, your father just finished prepping two of them. He told me you caught a big one.”
“He did, it’s gotta be the biggest Porgy I’ve ever seen.”
Inae smiles at Link’s exuberance, his praise makes Tauro’s face warm up.
“Well since it’s big I’m thinking it can feed more than just me & Link.”
“I know your father was cooking something but it was just for me & him. I’m assuming the smell of cooking attracted you & Purah?”
Inae asks Zelda who nods yes.
“We both grew quite an appetite after our massage.”
“Well I’ll start cooking then, can’t have the three of you starving under my fins.”
“You need help Tauro?”
“If you don’t mind Ma.”
“I can help!”
“No Link, I promised you dinner. You’re not gonna lift a finger!”
“You sure?”
Tauro gives Link another wide smile making him feel fuzzy inside.
“Just sit back & relax, you trust me right?”
“Of course.”
“Good so let’s set sail shall we.”
Link gives Tauro the large fish from his pad. After a few gasps of astonishment mother & son get to work cutting up the fish leaving Link & Zelda at the table.
“I uh, told Tauro about our situation.”
Zelda can tell Link is hesitant to admit it, that makes her chuckle.
“We would’ve told him soon enough anyway, apparently Bov & Inae sniffed us out immediately.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, Tauro had to get his sharp eye from somewhere. When you told Tauro, was he surprised?”
“Yeah he was. He thought we were together. He made a comment about us being together twice & both times my reaction was weird so I had to explain. He already feels like an old friend so I forgot we never told him about it.”
“Well don’t worry I slipped with Inae too. Even if she already figured it out.”
“I trust them.”
“I do too.”
Link & Zelda converse into more mundane topics while Inae & Tauro make dinner. When Purah & Bov finish setting the table Bov offers the duo seats. After he goes to help his son & wife. All the while Purah goes to her place to grab bottles of her handmade wine. Inae joins the table.
“Dinner is almost done, should be out any second.”
“Good, at this point I could eat an Octorok.”
“I mean if you get the right spices, it can be quite good.”
“Link…”
“What? Zelda, don't act like you weren’t trying to feed me frogs.”
“That was one time! Don’t blame me for eating monster parts, that's all you’re doing.”
”Hey monster parts helped out a guy who was sick in Gerudo Canyon, you can’t deny their benefits.”
“That’s a last resort measure not a luxury treat!”
“I need to cook you some monster parts & you’ll see what I’m talking about.”
“No you don’t.”
Inae witnesses their bickering with amusement cracking a smile.
“It may not be my place to go against the Princess of all people but we do like to deep fry Octorok tentacles & paired with a special sauce it’s quite good.”
“You see Zel, I’m on the rupees.”
“Fried tentacles are a bit different than the entrails of a beast.”
“Says the one who likes eating chopped liver.”
Zelda gasps, slapping Link's shoulder, the hero doesn’t hesitate laughing at her.
“Don’t worry Princess, your liver cravings are safe with me.”
Link’s laughter gets louder as Zelda flusters, thankfully Bov & Tauro arrive with plates to shift focus. Link & Zelda forget their bickering as they see the plate in front of them. The glistening cuts of fish are a bright coral color & dark brown at the edges. Luscious greens accent the dish with a small cup filled with a dark sauce. The scent only makes them salivate further, if they didn’t possess manners they’d dig in.
“By Hylia Tauro this looks amazing.”
Zelda’s praise & Link looking at his plate in awe makes him chuckle.
“I was taught by Kiana. For my rupees I’d say she’s the best cook in Hyrule.”
“I can’t disagree with you there Tauro, those fancy chefs in the castle are put to shame by her blessed hands.”
Coming around the corner Purah backs Tauro’s claim, she has three bottles between both hands, one on her left, two on her right. This seems to knock Link out his haze as he winces along with Zelda at the bottles.
“Please tell me you didn’t go overboard on this batch of wine.”
“Don’t worry Linky, I prioritized the flavor over the alcohol content this time. I wouldn’t want to add blacking out to our vacation schedule.”
“Thank Hylia, I was hungover for two days. I had to meet with poor Dorephan with a splitting headache.”
“Imagine having to train a new team of recruits while hungover.”
Purah laughs, sitting down uncorking the first bottle. While the trio spoke the other plates were set on the table. She grabs a set of glasses pouring her wine into them & passing them around.
“I know Hylians are bad with holding their drink but I thought you two would be immune, apparently not.”
“Tolerance has nothing to do with it, the amount of alcohol you put would’ve killed a Lynel.”
“Alright enough chatter I think we’ve all starved ourselves enough.”
Bov’s voice booms killing any retort Link or Zelda would come up with. They don’t care considering the meal in front of them. On the table one side is Bov, Inae & Purah, the other is Zelda, Link & Tauro. Bov & Inae’s plates are different having Bov’s catch but they have some pieces of Tauro’s catch as well. They all have a bite of Tauro’s fish first which creates a wealth of satisfied hums & wide eyes.
“Damn Tauro you’ve definitely mastered this since your studying.”
“I can’t believe how perfectly it melts on my tongue.”
“I’ll save Hyrule fifty times if it means I can taste this.”
Bov & Inae sit proud at the praise for their son who’s flushed.
“Thanks, glad you guys like it.”
Link looks at the now timid man, trying to avoid the praise. Under his bangs he can see his eyes looking at the plate to hide in himself. It’s probably the cutest thing Link has ever seen, typical humble nature of a Lurelin but on a pretty face.
Tauro takes notice of Link’s eyes on him, it should bring him discomfort but seeing the hero’s appreciative smile eases him. He grabs his glass of the pale wine to distract himself from Link.
“Oh wow this is pretty sweet.”
“Yeah I put a good amount of sugar cane in during the fermentation process.”
Link & Zelda take a sip curious about the taste.
“It is sweet, still has a kick at the end but it’s not like last time.”
“Yeah it felt like I was swallowing molten lava. Death Mountain didn’t burn me that bad.”
Purah rolls her eyes laughing, raising her glass then taking a sip. Dinner is mostly quiet aside from a few murmurs of daily monotony. They all drink more wine than planned as the wine’s sweetness pairs perfectly with the savory taste of the fish. It’s not drunkenness but a buzz that loosens the group into conversations of old.
“So Bov, if Inae was in Gerudo Town where did that place you?”
“Well Princess when I was a boy I remember my old man had a book about spear combat. It was a guide with all these step by step illustrations, what caught my eye was that they were all Zora. I was immediately hooked with anything regarding spears.
Of course spear fishing is a fundamental skill of the Lurelin but I always was whipping the thing around like I saw in that book which terrified my old man. There was a compromise as he gifted me a staff to use instead of an actual spear so I didn’t kill anyone.
As I got older my fixation with spear work didn’t fade, I became known as Lurelin’s prime spear fisher & learned every move in that book. I wanted to learn more & have a Zora teach me. It was then I made a plan to go to wherever they lived so they could train me, idealistic I know.
So when I reached adulthood I set up a route by talking to travelers at the nearby stable. I was given a map with a route straight to Zora’s domain. With a real spear my old man gave me along with the book & made my way. Looking back it was a risky venture but I grew thankful for my hobby as it helped me defend myself.
Getting close to the domain the path was littered with monsters & I held my own for a majority of it but near the end I was faltering. I was in a fight with a silver moblin & I managed to take it down but little did I know it was an ambush. I thought I was doomed for sure but then the troops of Zora took them down.
Come to find out many of the Zora guards saw my journey in their mountains taking down monsters. They were curious who I was because I was using their combat methods. I told them my whole story & they didn’t know what to do.
Next thing I know I’m in front of King Dorephan explaining everything. He called me a unique case, brave but foolish which I couldn’t argue. He said he was willing to make me one of his trainees if I passed a test. I had to face ten Zora guards, I managed to beat seven of them which granted me a position.
Boy did I get it, their training was strenuous but I persevered. It was three years of training & then five more years of being a guard for the King. It was definitely an anomaly but I grew to be a part of their domain. In another life I’d still be there guarding ole’ Dorephan.”
Just like Zelda was enraptured in Inae’s words, she & Link are caught in Bov’s story.
“A guard of the Zora king, damn. Wait, that means you know Sidon, right?”
“Yup, we sparred countless times. I gave him a few pointers & look at him now, the newly crowned king. I know he’s in town so maybe we can go at it for old time’s sake.”
Link’s in awe, the alcohol is definitely making him more excitable but even without it he’d feel the same.
“You guys are a family of legends, no wonder you’re the chief of this giant research team Tauro. You were destined to be something great.”
The couple smile at Link’s declaration, Tauro on the other hand huffs in timid acceptance.
“Yeah I was shocked when some young Lurelin guy came out of nowhere & became my star student. Then I meet his parents & they tell me their tale & it all makes sense.”
Purah chuckles, shooting Tauro a wink.
“So with Inae in Gerudo Town & you in Zora’s Domain how did you guys meet? You were worlds apart.”
Zelda’s question causes Bov’s face to wash in adoration again.
“It was the fate of Hylia that brought me to Pearl.”
Inae laughs at her easily smitten husband.
“Fate was a Zora named Syra who would travel from Zora’s domain to provide me & Tovah with some rare materials.”
“Little did Pearl know me & Syra were good friends. So one day on my sanctioned vacation I decided to join her on a trip to the Gerudo desert.”
“At that time Tovah had already passed & the shop was closed down so I was helping a friend at Kara Kara Bazaar.”
“So when we arrive at the Bazaar, me & Syra look at the row of tents offering all kinds of beautiful clothes, jewels & foods I’ve never seen before. Then I come across the last tent & see the greatest beauty of all.”
Bov leans into Inae holding both her shoulders resting his head on hers. She can’t help but laugh & roll her eyes.
“They say being in Gerudo Town can make you easily infatuated with men but the handful of times I was at the bazaar all the men I saw were either too young or just overconfident fools who weren’t anything special.”
Bov boasts a confident smile at Inae’s insinuation, without even looking at him she notices.
“Then comes another overconfident fool stumbling to my tent.”
She points at Bov who pouts immediately, Tauro huffs.
“But…”
The man raises his brow curiously.
“He was actually cute, really damn cute.”
The smile returns even bigger & brighter than before.
“Great Staminokas Pa, are you trying to blind us.”
Tauro squints covering his eyes as if the sun were beaming on him, making Link laugh.
“Hey this smile is what birthed ya, be thankful.”
Tauro gives his dad an appalled look, causing more laughter at the table.
“Thanks for the information, old man. I definitely need that swimming in my mind.”
“Anyways, I see this handsome man who I immediately recognize is Lurelin like me. We catch each other's eyes & the air between us shifts, it was something I never experienced.”
Unbeknownst to each other Link & Tauro immediately think of the looks they shared earlier, the air between them shifting. If his parents who are obviously still love struck felt the same thing all that long ago makes them wonder if those moments mean something.
“Then he told me a line that made me reconsider my attraction to him.”
Bov has a hearty laugh at that.
“But ya remember it all these years later & it gave ya your little nickname.”
Inae rolls her eyes knowing he’s right.
“Well Pearl, our audience is waiting to hear it.”
“You say it!”
“It loses its luster if I repeat it.”
With a sigh Inae thinks to recall it perfectly as the table waits to hear it, beside Tauro who’s just laughing at his parents bickering.
“So what they say is true, the desert is a golden sea, how else could this precious Pearl be?”
Inae has an exaggerated deep voice mocking her husband, the reactions across the table are in disbelief at such a line.
“I can’t believe I called you a heartbreaker.”
“It’s earnest at least.”
“Are you that corny Tauro?”
“I hope the hell not.”
“Say what you will but I got the girl in the end.”
“I hate to say it but he’s right. That line was so baffling it made me laugh & that’s poison to someone like me. Make me laugh & I’m charmed.”
Bov gives a cocky grin, Tauro huffs looking away from his dad’s pride.
“How unfortunate.”
“Back to the story…we got on quick, he had a week to be there & we spent it together. He had to head back but promised me a letter when he returned. I expected to wait a few weeks but was surprised when I got one about a week out from his visit.”
“The Zora had Rito messengers who I already made use of by sending my old man letters. They were surprised that I made a new contact, of course going all the way to the desert cost more but it was worth it.”
“Those poor Ritos must’ve hated us, the only time they got a break were the handful of times Bov went to the Bazaar to see me. It was about a good year of that until we both got an itch to make a change.”
“I retired my guard position a while after I first saw Inae so that whole time I didn’t really have any winds in my sails. We were falling in deep for each other so we both made a plan to start this relationship properly.”
“We both packed our stuff he left from Zora’s Domain, picked me up & we headed back here. It was nice to know that we had all the time in the world, it made for a fun trip that I’ll never forget.”
“Coming back home ended up being a great call cuz we really had an opportunity to feel each other out. I know my old man was happy that I met someone. He never let me forget that I was fortunate to have her.”
“His dad was a wonderful man, encouraging & always face deep in a book. Which reminds me of a certain someone.”
Inae gives a warm smile to her son & Link sees Tauro’s face warm with a nostalgia.
“Yeah my boy stole from me & my old man, lucky aren’t ya?”
“I’m lucky from Grandpa but from you? Not so much.”
“So ungrateful.”
Bov & Inae go on about how they travelled around the unknown lands outside of Hyrule. It leads to the same offer that Inae gave to Zelda, this time it extends to the whole table. Everyone is fond of the idea as travelling into those lands with a sturdy ground sounds exciting. The conversation trails into Link, Zelda & Purah sharing stories of their own mischief.
At many points Link & Tauro catch each other looking, at first it’s hesitant but they grow more comfortable meeting each other’s eyes smiling. Just like Inae described, the air between them feels pleasantly different, they want so badly to lean into each other but they have to figure out what these feelings even are first.
“Alright I think I’m gonna call it a night, these bones are starting to ache.”
“Starting to ache?”
Link laughs at how Tauro immediately pounced on the opportunity to jab.
“Watch it boy!”
“Well before my boys start brawling, could you help clean up?”
Everyone does their part in cleaning up, leftovers stored, dishes cleaned & packed to return to their homes & the table is left spotless like nothing happened. Zelda & Purah share their goodbyes while Link decides to stay behind to help the family pack their stuff back in their home. For a brief moment Bov takes Link aside who gets worried immediately at the man’s anxiousness.
“Hey I just wanna say sorry for earlier.”
Link tilts his head with a raised brow.
“For what?”
“For the stuff I said about Tauro getting ya on a date.”
The worry leaves Link as he chuckles at Bov’s concern.
“Oh have no worries Bov, if I were to be upset with you it’d be a bokoblin calling a moblin ugly. Purah & Robbie have teased me since I was a kid & they taught me to tease back.”
Bov relaxes with Link’s nonchalance.
“Hey that’s good to hear, don’t need to have a bad first impression with the Hero ya know?”
“Pfft I’ve met almost everyone in Hyrule, you’d have to try real hard for me to get a bad impression. Also Tauro is such a well mannered smart guy I knew he was raised to be that way.”
Bov smiles, patting Link’s shoulder.
“That’s quite the compliment, our boy has probably achieved more than both me & Inae. We saw he had a passion just like us & we made sure he would follow it no matter the journey & look at him, the chief of the Zonai Survey Team!”
Though they playfully jab at each other, Link knows Bov loves his son just by how he speaks about him. So many of those he cares for have families broken by tragedy or resentments so for Tauro to have a full supportive family warms him.
“Hey Bov, Link! We need some help.”
They retreat from their conversation & answer Inae’s call. It’s done quickly but by that time they’re all tired.
“Well it looks like that’s it, thank you for your help Link.”
“Of course Inae, I’m glad to have had dinner with you guys.”
“I’m glad as well, it was an honor to have you.”
“Yeah it’s not everyday the princess walks up to ya & your boy brings the Hero to have dinner with.”
Tauro laughs at how his dad describes the night like it’s mystical.
“Make sure to not be a stranger too, if you or the Princess need anything let us know.”
“We will don’t worry, you guys have a great night & may the Goddess be with you!”
“May the Goddess be with you.”
Bov & Inae say it in unison to Link, Tauro says his byes as well, they all part with smiles & waves. Once out in the night Link feels at peace under the stars in the sleepy beach town.
“Hey if you don’t mind, could I walk you back to your place?”
Link’s heart skips a beat at the offer, he doesn’t hesitate to answer.
“Of course, this is your home after all so it’s good to have a guide.”
“I mean you know this town well too, you did help rebuild it after saving it.”
“I’m gonna be honest, the months of the upheaval quickly became a blur once it was all over. So you’d be surprised.”
“I don’t blame you, I could imagine it wasn’t a fun time.”
“Yeah but it had its pleasant moments, working with you was definitely a highlight.”
Link is thankful for the night as it hides his blush, Tauro on the other hand almost stops in his tracks, his heart beats rapidly.
“You flatter me Link.”
“You flatter yourself, I mean you just cooked dinner for not only me but all of us on a whim. There’s a whole list of things that make you a highlight in anyone’s life.”
“I try my best, I was raised to be thoughtful in a world that was going under for so long.”
“Well your best is definitely great cuz you were a pretty integral part in making Hyrule thrive again & I don’t see that changing in the future.”
“Says the one who saved Hyrule twice.”
“Exactly! The gravity of your actions are nothing to be scoffed at.”
Tauro is completely overwhelmed, yes he’s hesitant to receive compliments but for it to come from Link strikes something different. He can only chuckle to let some of the angst escape.
“…& people call me encouraging.”
“We should team up & encourage everyone to stop staring at my arm.”
Link dramatically raises his hands gesturing around himself making them both laugh.
“Not a bad idea, so what did my old man pull you aside for?”
“He was concerned if you knew what a shirt was.”
Link can’t even fully finish his answer without laughing.
“I know that’s not true because he didn’t know what a shirt was until he met Ma.”
“Wow, I didn't think lack of modesty was genetic.”
“Maybe I should walk around naked if you’re so fixated on it.”
Link huffs & grumbles lowly.
“Wouldn’t mind seeing that.”
“What did you say?”
“What did you hear?”
“Nothing.”
“Then I guess we’ll never know.”
Link says with a wicked grin, Tauro rolls his eyes laughing.
“You definitely are a friend of Purah & Robbie.”
“Like you don’t have a sharp tongue with your dad.”
“Got me there.”
“Second one today.”
Link jumps in victory, Tauro didn’t realize how silly the hero could be.
“You’re ridiculous. But seriously what did my old man say?”
“He apologized for what he said but I told him it was no big deal.”
“Ah I should’ve figured, the old man has a mouth but he can feel guilt.”
They walk up to Link & Zelda’s shared home, both are a bit sad their time is cut short. But it fades as they’re in the same town & will mutually make it a point to see each other.
“Thank you Tauro, after all the chaos of the past months I definitely needed a night like this. It was great to meet your parents, so many of my friends have lost loved ones in this whole mess. I’m glad you have a family to come back to.”
Tauro’s heart flutters, it’s been a long time since someone told him something so heartfelt. Looking into Link’s eyes he sees the authenticity of his heart.
“I’m happy to have given you such a night. I’ll do it anytime. It makes me happy you met my parents, I wouldn’t be the man I am without them & I appreciate that I have them everyday.”
Their irises are burning into each other, the tension between them gives. Without thought they hug each other finally making the contact they’ve desired all night.
The embrace is tight, Link is cocooned in Tauro’s big arms with his face pressed against the man’s warm body. They hold it for a while enjoying the comfort, feeling each other’s relaxed breathing. To their reluctance they break the embrace but keep their eyes connected, the purest fondness resides in their gazes.
“Goodnight Tauro, may the Goddess bless you.”
“Goodnight to you too & may the Goddess bless you.”
One last smile they share before Link retreats inside separating them. Though it’s just a simple goodbye it feels heavy on both, they can’t believe how melodramatic they’re being. These feelings are strange but they enjoy it buzzing in their chests.
As Link walks into the bedroom he sees Zelda peacefully asleep, for the first time in a while he doesn’t join her. He doesn’t want to interrupt her slumber, also he doesn’t know if his running thoughts will let him sleep. He goes to the other bed laying down looking up at the roof hearing the rustling waves.
As Tauro walks back to his home, he enjoys his own space most of the time but tonight the house feels too empty. He hasn’t felt that in a long time, he lays in his bed staring at the roof hearing the rustling waves.
They both fall asleep to a single thought that’s loud between them.
‘I think I’m falling for him.’
Notes:
Yeah I wanted Tauro’s parents to rock that same freak, have an ambition & go for it. Also travel outside those pesky endless pits that surround Hyrule.

Chapter Text
Zelda wakes up with many unusual circumstances. First the sun is higher than she’s used to, which means she slept in. That’s unheard of for her. Second, the other bed in the room is disheveled, which means Link slept separately from her.
The fact that she feels so well rested is strange, her & Link haven’t slept apart in a long time. When they do they both have irritable sleep at best, it’s never been comfortable.
She wonders if this is a sign that they’re growing up, are those traumatized teens finally fading into time? She’ll have to ask Link about it & if she’s being honest she hopes he was comfortable too. They can’t be doing this forever.
She takes her time waking & readying herself, having no urgency feels wonderful. She thinks of the night before, it truly was a great time. She admires Bov & Inae, they set their eyes on a passion & travelled far to enrich them. It’s neat to know where Tauro got it from. She’ll definitely make it a point to learn from them.
Thinking of the family she noticed how much it bothered her to be called princess. This feeling has always lingered in her since she was a kid but she swallowed it down for years even after the Calamity’s defeat. But ever since she woke from her draconification she started getting bothered, at first she chalked it up to her irritation of the parties.
It raises the same twisted feelings of people only liking her because she was born with a title. Did Bov & Inea only think it was an honor to meet her because she’s the princess? Is she herself not good enough? She snaps herself out of her spiral, she’s on vacation, she can’t be bothering herself with these thoughts.
She walks out the home to distract herself & it seems fate is on her side as a familiar group resides close by. Inae, Purah, Riju & Yona are watching over the waters intently in upbeat conversation.
“Well what’s going on here?”
They all look at Zelda with excited expressions, she raises a brow at their energy.
“Ah Zelda you’re just in time, the fools are gonna take part in Bolson’s water rally!”
Purah’s grin is wicked as usual, Zelda brushes her hair back, rolling her eyes.
“Oh dear…”
The ladies laugh at Zelda’s gesture, Inae pats a chair next to her offering it.
“Take a seat Princess, it’ll be quite a show.”
“Thank you Inae & please, you can call me Zelda.”
Inae bows her head in acceptance.
“So how is this water rally going to go?”
“It’s quite similar to the sand seal races back home, there’s a trail of markers that they’ll have to pass & whoever has the quickest time wins. But unlike the sand seal races you can use any transport as long as it’s sea worthy, which is where the fun is. Yesterday I saw many mad men sail with all sorts of atrocities.”
Riju explains then hands Zelda a small bowl of fruit that everyone else has.
“Can’t have a good show without some snacks.”
“Oh thank you Riju, so who specifically is participating?”
“Oh if Riju thought she saw mad men yesterday then today is gonna be one for the books. Four fools broken into two teams, Bov & Sidon who will win by the way & then Link & Tauro!”
“I must disagree, Link & Tauro have this in the bag.”
Purah looks at Riju with pure disbelief.
“No way, you’re telling me two Hylians can beat a Zora!”
“Link is clever & with a mind like Tauro’s behind him they can beat anything.”
”Are you gonna stand for this Yona? Your pride is being threatened.”
Yona laughs, shrugging her shoulders.
“I mean I won’t go against Sidon but Riju isn’t being unreasonable. He is a freshwater Zora still, now if they were against me they would be in trouble.”
Purah dubiously chuckles.
“So obviously me & Yona are for Bov & Sidon, Riju is for team Link & Tauro. Tell me who are you two for?”
“Oh great, did Purah pull you guys into a wager?”
“Surprisingly no, which means the world is gonna end tomorrow.”
Purah gasps in mock offense at Zelda & Riju’s remarks.
“How dare you imply I have no love for the art of a wager. Rupees or not.”
Zelda grunts rolling her eyes.
“Well I think it’s obvious that I’m for Link & Tauro.”
“Looks like we’re split even, Inae will you break the tie? Bov needs his beauty on his side doesn’t he?”
“…& so does my son. I’m afraid I’m neutral, I’d never pit my boys against each other.”
“Damn, I knew I couldn’t crack that.”
“You tried at least.”
Inae laughs & when Purah looks out to the water she leans into Zelda’s earshot.
“A mother never leaves her son to dry, I’m with you Zelda.”
Zelda chuckles, tossing a diced fruit into her mouth.
“I don’t even know why ya even challenged us, we have this rally hook line & sinker!”
“Don’t be so cocky old man, you’re going against the hero. The element of surprise is ours.”
Link & Sidon are amused at the father & son going at each other in the wooden lobby of the rally. It’s been this way all morning, Tauro knows his dad is the water rally record holder & wants to take him down.
“I hate to go against my dearest friend but I must say Link needs my help traversing waters. So we have an advantage.”
Link grabs his chest gasping in pretend shock.
“Low blow Sidon, how could you?”
“The truth requires some pain my friend.”
Sidon smirks, he & Link have been hanging out long enough that the Zora picked up on sarcasm & developed a sharp wit of his own.
“Got that right Sidon, the truth of losing hurts but we don’t have to worry about that.”
“Oh you’ll worry, trust me.”
Tauro bumps Link’s shoulder in camaraderie, he flashes a winking smirk, a handsome one Link thinks. He nods with a smirk of his own.
Bolson enters the lobby chipper as ever whistling a tune.
“Okey-doo boys, it’s set up. Who’s going first?”
Bov walks up to Bolson, giving a smirk.
“I’ll go first, Sidon hasn’t experienced your engineering yet so I won’t deprive him of such a talent any longer.”
Bolson blushes giggling at Bov’s charms, Tauro rolls his eyes, bending to Link.
“What a kiss ass.”
Link bursts into laughter & Bov snaps his sight to his son.
“Are ya questioning the talents of this one of a kind man right here? The one who helped rebuild your home?”
“I’m questioning your ‘talents’, tell me are those high scores real or did you flirt your way to the top?”
Bov shakes his head in disappointment which is obviously an act.
“Tsk tsk, how disrespectful, questioning this wonderful man’s rally just to accuse me.”
Tauro rolls his eyes for the millionth time.
“Oh please old man I know you inside & out. Also you should know I can do what you’re doing & unlike you Mr. married man I can actually give Bolson the night of his life.”
Tauro smirks & winks at the older flamboyant man who immediately gets more flushed. Jealously brushes Link’s heart for a flash of a second.
“Oh I assure you of my integrity, many studly men have come here & have tried to woo me to win but have brought a great shame to their own names. Your dad is a true talent but I am curious to see your chops, you’re a young mirror of him I can see you staking his claim hoo-wah!”
Bov gasps, acting offended.
“Bolson! I thought I was your favorite rally victor.”
“Oh Bov you are but with your blood in his veins he could beat you & especially with Link. A team of firecrackers, bang bang!”
“Why thank you Bolson, I’ll make you proud.”
Tauro gives another wink, this time Link doesn’t feel anything as he knows he’s playing his dad’s exact game.
“Well enough of these battling words, let’s get on the water.”
Sidon bumps Bov’s shoulder.
“Eager aren’t ya? Alright let’s do it!”
Sidon & Bov rush to the open boardwalks leading to the course. Sidon dives in the water getting into position, he & Bov share a glance before they both nod. The man jumps off the boardwalk landing on the king's back, like Link has done before Bov is gonna ride Sidon.
“First he flirts with Bolson & now he’s riding Sidon. My poor Ma is married to a whore.”
Link laughs in disbelief, he’s never heard Tauro be this sharp with his tongue.
“You’re developing a tongue there Tauro. Am I discovering something new?”
“A beach needs an ocean & my mannered words need their foul friends. I only let it out to those who I’m comfortable with, can’t have the word spreading that I have a sailors tongue.”
“Well you don’t have to worry about me cuz I deal with the same thing. I have to keep up an image, especially being Zelda’s supposed ‘lover’ I can’t be swearing left & right.”
They both feel a sense of relief, another common ground between them. The juvenile idea of them swearing together in secret is a tantalizing one.
“I sensed it, you have the eyes of a pain in the ass.”
“Surprised you can see them behind all that shit in front of your eyes.”
They both share a glance like rambunctious teens, they can’t help but laugh at the absurdity.
“Oh Hylia, that was so dumb.”
“Made you feel like a kid again, huh Tauro?”
“A stupid kid.”
Far off whistles & cheers take them out of their conversation, they both look to see the rest of the group. Link is happy that Zelda is up & enjoying herself. Purah is of course the most active & he’s sure it’s because Bov & Sidon are about to start.
“I bet you anything Purah is against us.”
Link squints his eyes in irritation, Tauro laughs.
“That’s a no brainer & an incentive to win.”
“Right?”
A whistle pierces the air startling the younger pair. They snap their eyes to Bolson who is doing one of his interpretive dances.
“Hoo-wah! Sha-ding! The Lurelin champion Bov returns to conquer the water rally! This time with the King of the Zora as his vessel! This will be a race for the ages! Alright boys it’s time to go!”
As Bolson's voice booms throughout the winds of Lurelin, Bov & Sidon get into position. All eyes are on them, Link is curious while Tauro is skeptical.
“One!”
Sidon’s fins extend & shake, Purah grins ready for her victory. Yona sits up to get a closer look.
“Two!”
Inae laughs at the cocky grin she can see from that far in the distance.
“Kill it baby!”
One wave of Sidon’s arms & they’re off. Bov howls into the sky while they both rocket their way through the course. Link can see why Purah is rooting for the pair, they move so fast they barely break the water barrier but when they do giant waves feather out.
Link looks at Tauro a little worried but the researcher has his arms crossed, his skepticism hasn’t waned one bit. He looks at Link & gives a smirk.
“We got this Link, that old man has tired moves.”
Tauro’s bravado is on full display which Link picks up, easing his nerves. Purah & Yona cheer as the zooming pair pass the multiple markers in seconds. In a mirror to Tauro & Link, Zelda looks to Inae nervous but the Lurelin’s cool demeanor calms her.
It seems the commotion catches the town’s attention who gather at the shores witnessing the rally. They cheer for their hometown champion as each marker is crossed. Link’s nerves spark again with all the witnesses, Tauro isn’t phased one bit & a small curve on his lip shows growing confidence.
“Well it looks like my Pa’s gonna get his ass kicked with an audience.”
Link chuckles, still nervous but trying to follow Tauro’s lead.
“I see pressure doesn’t affect you?”
“It doesn’t mean shit to me.”
“Never thought I’d see you being cocky.”
“If the old man is gonna be then so will I. Fight fire with fire right?”
”Damn right.”
In this moment Link remembers Tauro is an adventurer at heart before all his accolades. Zelda is similar under all the poise there’s an element of madness within, when it comes to sharper minds that’s always the case. He hopes to fully crack that barrier with Tauro & see who’s wilder between the two of them.
A mist surrounds them as Bov & Sidon return to the dock. Sidon looks like a child in the heat of a sugar rush, Bov sports a grin full of pride. The cheers from the townsfolk only heightens the exhilarating atmosphere.
“Hoo-Wah! The champion of Lurelin Bov has beaten his own record yet again! Forty five marks in fifty seconds! No doubt the Zora King is a great vessel! This is history baby! Sha-Ding!”
Bolson’s speech makes the cheers rise further. The current champions get back on the dock, it warms Link a little to see Sidon so excitable, the same can’t be said for Tauro looking at his father.
“Well would ya look at that? Beat my own record again! Can’t ever not make a splash can I?”
Bov’s boasting only makes Tauro huff rolling his eyes, he turns to Link.
“Tell me Link in your travels have you ever seen a horse this high?”
Link laughs, Sidon comes up to him.
“Oh Link, that was so fun! What a thrill! Best of luck to you two though I know you don’t need it!”
“Why thank you Sidon, how polite.”
Tauro looks at his dad while emphasizing the last two words. Though Sidon has gained a sarcastic bone over the years he still is earnest with wishing his competitors the best.
“You did great Sidon, you definitely lit a fire under my ass.”
“Yet again you flatter me Link.”
Bolson walks up to the younger duo.
“Okey-doo boys, time to set up your vessel!”
With that the pair start getting to work, Tauro brings out their boat while Link searches his pad. Sparks of green flicker around the simple wooden vessel as it’s decorated with Zonai devices. Across the water the rest of the group watches intently.
“Oh that’s interesting.”
Riju smirks, popping a chunk of fruit into her mouth.
“Interesting indeed but technology can’t beat a Zora’s skills. Bov & Sidon have this in the bag.”
Purah raises her hand to Yona to beckon a high five, the queen gives it with a small laugh.
“You never know, predictability doesn’t follow my son.”
“Neither does it follow Link.”
Purah raises a brow at Inae & Zelda’s camaraderie, she laughs.
“I thought you were a neutral party Inae.”
The Lurelin shrugs, making Riju laugh.
“Three to two Purah, those odds look grim.”
“Ha! I’m a betting woman Riju! The odds are always at my mercy!”
“We’ll see.”
As the last Zonai device is put, the pair jump into the vessel. Tauro jostles around with the steering stick to make sure the fans & rockets are calibrated.
“Everything look good Tauro?”
“Yup.”
They both look at Bolson giving him a thumbs up in unison. The man nods & starts striking his poses.
“Lurelin! The home of the ocean I present to you something great! The son of our home champion, Tauro! With him the double savior of our lands Link! Today we’ll see if the blood runs thick, if son conquers father! Let’s see if history is made yet again! Hoo-Wah!”
Bov crosses his arms with that same grin, Sidon still bursts with energy. Link & Tauro get into position.
“You ready boys!”
Tauro & Link share a glance turn to Bolson & nod.
“One!”
Zelda raises in her seat with wide eyes.
“Two!”
Link’s arm starts to glow while Tauro grips the steering stick.
“Kill it baby!”
A snap of Link’s fingers & they’re off. The fans & rockets do their work as they pass through the first ten marks in five seconds. Tauro shines as he turns the boat at the right split seconds like they aren’t going at high speeds.
The townsfolk around them cheer as they zip by the marks. Bov & Purah’s faces drop in unison despite their distance, the others watch in joyous astonishment.
Link & Tauro’s hearts are racing, they didn’t think the boat would be this fast. Adrenaline floods their veins with each second passing. They pass the final mark but a problem becomes abundantly clear.
Their speed isn’t giving them the grace to slow down. One pull back of the steering stick makes the boat airborne. They only have seconds before they crash into the rally dock. Bolson, Bov & Sidon won’t even have enough time to dodge the boat. All they can do is flinch & hope they don’t get killed.
“Fuck.”
Is all Tauro says when he closes his eyes bracing for impact. Silence is what greets his closed vision but yet there’s no pain. Reluctantly he opens his eyes.
Six wide eyes stare at him, the boat is above the dock feet away from the waiting trio. It’s like time is frozen but the rise & fall of their chests say otherwise. He quickly looks around to see the boat is midair covered in a golden layer of light. Looking back he sees Link laying his Zonai hand on the boat glowing the same gold.
He also notices Link is looking to the shore, following his eyes he sees Zelda in the distance raising a hand that glows gold as well. She nods at Link, he responds by retracting his hand so he can tap the devices to cut their power.
He nods back to Zelda & the boat is tugged backwards so it’s no longer above the dock. She snaps her finger then the boat drops into the water, Link quickly makes the devices disappear. He & Tauro lock eyes panting after almost endangering themselves & others.
“Holy shit.”
They both get back on the dock still slightly out of it, the others aren’t doing much better but Bov breaks the silence.
“I understand ya wanted to beat me but by Hylia I don’t think taking me out is the way to do it.”
Tension breaks as they all laugh nervously.
“Don’t flatter yourself old man, you’re not worth a life sentence.”
Bolson clears his throat trying to get ahold of himself.
“Ah I hate to say but I lost track of your time considering I was preparing to meet the goddess.”
Bolson looks embarrassed while Sidon looks concerned. Link & Tauro share a glance laughing in disbelief.
“You know what it doesn’t matter, we almost killed everyone so maybe it’s karma tugging at our line.”
“No that’s not right! We’ll have to figure out how to figure out their time! It’s only fair!”
Sidon bursts looking to Bolson to see if he can figure something out.
“Well I figured out twenty five seconds before losing track but I think they had passed thirty marks then.”
“Would you count them in the air? Does passing all the marks determine their time or fully docking?”
“Passing all the marks determines their time but Hylia knows when they passed!”
Bov shifts his eyes, taking a deep sigh, raising a hand to stop Sidon & Bolson’s discussion.
“I kept track of the time.”
Everyone in the group looks at him in anticipation, Tauro looks skeptical.
“Don’t give me those eyes boy, I may be a competitive man but I appreciate integrity.”
“Well then what was our time?”
Bov sighs again.
“Forty five marks in thirty seconds, ya beat us by twenty.”
Everyone’s brows raise in surprise, Sidon immediately turns to Link & Tauro.
“Great game my friends! Thirty seconds! Impeccable!”
“No too fast Sidon, give me a moment to grieve my loss.”
“What did you think Pa? That you’d beat the hero? You can’t believe the amount of strange games that litter Hyrule & Link has been the record holder for all of them!”
Link laughs nervously, even in obvious victory Tauro diverts the credit away from himself.
“I mean I just provided the devices, you were the one making those crazy turns.”
Bov smirks, crossing his arms.
“Hate to say it but he’s right boy, he gave ya the speed & ya managed it like a wild serpent.”
“Yes I agree! You have the quick instinct of the fastest sea Zoras!”
Tauro once again flushes trying to hide in himself but he fights against it.
“The old man giving me credit? I really did crack your psyche?"
“Don’t push your luck boy, ya won’t remain on top for too long.”
“Yeah, yeah whatever old man.”
The rest of the group are walking towards the rally building to make sure everything is fine. Zelda is enjoying being in a group under such casual circumstances for once.
“By Hylia they almost destroyed the water rally!”
“Yet they won, I told you Purah.”
“At what cost Riju? If it weren’t for Zelda we’d have to hold a funeral!”
“Bov has been through worse & I’m sure Tauro has been too. My boys are resilient.”
“Knowing my husband he’d probably shield Bolson & yeah he’d get a few scars but that’s where those scales come in handy.”
“Link already had recall active when I panicked & jumped in. So it would’ve been fine regardless. Yeah he’s reckless but he always fixes it at the last second.”
They have to cut through the crowd surrounding the rally building, it seems the townsfolk were also concerned. As they get in the front they see Bolson standing in front busting his moves.
“Lurelin I’m ever so joyous to announce we have a new victor! The hero of Hyrule, Link & Tauro the son of our long-standing champion Bov have broken records indeed! Forty five marks in thirty seconds beating the almighty Bov & King Sidon by twenty seconds!
Lurelin! Cheer for you new champions! Link & Tauro! Hoo-wah!”
The doors open revealing the duo both wearing opal medallions with the town’s emblem carved into them. Cheers erupt making the duo shy but they don’t show it. They get barraged by the townsfolk’s happy words. After saying thank you a thousand times the pair finally meet back with their group.
“Congrats on your victory, sure it almost resulted in a blood sacrifice but a win is a win.”
Purah makes the two faces fall into faux frowns, it makes the others laugh.
“What encouragement professor!”
Link smiles at Tauro’s fake politeness, Purah pulls the same game.
“Of course my number one pupil!”
Inae comes into Tauro’s view immediately pushing back his hair to check for any injury.
“I’m okay Ma, Link & Zelda got us in the knick of time.”
“I know but still, I’m gonna worry.”
Purah notices Bov & Sidon coming into view.
“Stay sharp Inae, there may be no injuries with Tauro but I’m sure Bov’s ego is shattered.”
Inae turns her head dramatically to observe her husband.
“You don’t have to worry too much Ma, he actually complimented me & if it weren’t for him we wouldn’t have known our time.”
Purah's eyes widen as she huffs.
“Wow you really must’ve broken that psyche.”
Tauro laughs at that, Bov & Sidon make it towards the group after some interactions with the townsfolk. After they join, the group split into many conversations. Zelda grabs Link’s hand, getting his attention.
“Glad to see you’re okay, congratulations on winning.”
“Thanks Zel, you definitely saved us in the end.”
“You already had recall active by the time I activated mine.”
“Really? It was so fast I couldn’t tell. Either way you made it easier to turn off the devices.”
“Guess our connection came through at that moment but then again you’re a reckless maniac so I’m always on high alert.”
“Well with Tauro around now it’s gonna get worse.”
Zelda notices the fondness in Link’s face & words.
“I see you’re getting on well with him.”
“Yeah I am, especially after this rally. The adrenaline was crazy! I could tell he was enjoying the thrill as much as I was! I’d love to take him sand seal racing or shield surfing! Hell why not both!”
There’s an unmistakable sparkle in Link’s eye making Zelda wonder if what Purah was teasing about yesterday is coming true.
“Ah, is he why you didn’t join me in bed?”
Guilt & a flush weigh down on Link’s face.
“No no, he walked me home but I just saw you asleep so comfortable I didn’t want to wake you up. Sorry.”
Zelda chuckles, smiling as bright as ever easing Link.
“It’s nothing to worry about Link, it was just quite different waking up not only late but on my own. It was a good sleep & honestly we have to grow out of that at one point. As long as you were comfortable too.”
“I was comfortable & I’m glad you were too, I was kinda worried.”
“Good & don’t be, especially if Tauro’s going to take my place.”
Link blushes deeper as Zelda gives him a wink & a grin.
“Zel! We’re just friends! He doesn’t know I’m into guys & I’m sure he isn't into guys! I think he likes Paya, I would assume.”
Link rambles obviously flustered, Zelda laughs walking away towards Riju & Purah bantering.
“Well then time will tell.”
Left on his own he’s shaken up, he looks at Tauro who’s currently speaking to Rozel with well mannered respect. I’m his mind he claimed he was starting to fall for him & with every interaction it’s getting deeper. It strikes him that Zelda has taken notice, is it that obvious?
Regardless, Link doesn’t have every answers he needs to delve into his feelings. All he can do is go with the flow & just appreciate the fact that he’s gaining a friend in Tauro. An intelligent, likable, adventurous, generous friend that is really pleasant on the eyes.
