"Raindrops fell from Wei Ying’s soaked hair and dripped from his eyelashes to run down the slopes of his nose. Water splashed up from the street as his feet pounded against the pavement, soaking his pants even further. Shivers wracked his body as he ran, the sounds of traffic drowning out the rapid beating of his heart. It would be funny in an hour after the cold fled, and he no longer felt like a drowned rat left to die in the gutter. That’s what he kept telling himself at least."
