Chapter Text

The howls of wind brushed against him, snow decorating his already frozen face. He could still hear the tavern's songs that played endlessly in his mind, a constant loop for what even he seemed to be going through now. Each step getting more and more heavy with the build up of snow. The fur of his coat brushing against his neck, a dull tickled feeling against his jaw line. Had he been a mage possibly he would have a way to be warm but for now he would freeze, hoping for a way out of the circled trees.

His hands were frozen, bones cracking with each tiny lift as the cold had a hold on every joint of his, his earrings clashing together against his neck, his eyes threatening to close before he had seen a man, standing a head of him, holding a staff, dark brown hair, his clothes still against the wind which shouldn’t have been possibly but yet.. it felt like he was calling him, offering him help out of the snow, out of the loop. In the slow blinks of his eyes he was getting closer, when their hands met he awoke in sweat, sitting up and covering his mouth as he curled up, unaware of the guest.

‘’Everything is cold and the same, yet there is..a man, who reaches for you, offering help, you’re afraid but he is..warm, something..someone, who will fight off the cold for you’’ Cole spoke, sitting at the edge of lavellan’s bed, his hands together, his fingers fidgeting.

Kallas slowly looked up, wanting to glare at the spirit boy, to tell him to get out, but he wasn’t mean, there was really no inch of natural rudeness in him, he couldn’t hurt the spirit boys feelings so his gaze was soft ‘’i suppose, i was having another nightmare wasn’t i?” There was no doubt, he was sweating head to toe ‘’yes, but there was a happy ending, you woke before you could see it’’

‘’I doubt it was really a happy ending, cole, how about you talk to dorian or..solas, i need to bathe’’ kallas spoke, sliding out of the bed, pulling his shirt above his head as cole nodded and got up, walking over to where the stairs led down yet he stood, staring at kallas back ‘’..warm, a life has started, strange but comfortable, excited’’ he spoke, confusing the inquisitor who only shrugged it off, waiting for cole to leave before he could get ready to wash off the sweat.

-

His hair, afloat against the warm water that went no higher than his knees, dancing around his legs as he held his elbows, his eyes cast down to the soft waves of the water, his reflection wavered, distorting. No one but the inquisitor himself ever saw his hair down at true length, his bangs no longer pulled back into the tight ponytail.

His hands traveled down his sides, below his flat stomach before the hand with the anchor came into view, the green light flickering with curiosity. A curiosity he wished to kill.

As he sank into the water his hair bunched and danced around his arms and chest, sticking to his skin like a parasite. Cassandra had told him before that he needed a haircut and as much as he agreed, he couldn’t let its history go down with a simple twist of a knife. For who would he be? A random elf. An elf who could do nothing but wallow in its own pity and for that, he would never become. His hand swimmed against the pressure of the water, coming to the middle of his torso. He felt so nauseated and restless, possibly that nightmare had done much more on his immune system than it should’ve.

-

His legs were weak, trembling with each step like he was walking through the snow again, the way people's eyes watched his wobbles to the hall felt like hungry wolves, what was wrong with the inquisitor? What could we use against him?

His hand shook against the knob of the door before pushing the door open, with his back against the door to close it he took a few seconds to regain his strength before making his way over to the ambassador’s desk where she was already looking up at him ‘’inquisitor?’’ she asked, standing from her seat, her quill gently placed down on the desk, normally she would stay seated but he looked troubled.

‘’Lady josephine..i’m sorry to intrude on you..’’ he walked closer, leaning into the hands she placed against his cheeks, she was fairly taller than kallas so his head was leaning up towards her as she checked for any present illness ‘’you have nothing to apologize for inquisitor..you slept in late today and yet you look unwell, has something ha-...oh’’ she whispered softly, she wasn’t the eldest daughter for nothing ‘’maybe even you and Sir pavus forget that you are not truly..a man’’

Kallas looked at her with confusion ‘’well, iron bull calls me uhh..aqun..aqun-athlok’’ he said, standing back to full height ‘’yes, that. Well inquisitor, this question is far..out there, but the last time you and sir pavus joined in a private dance?’’ his face went red and his eyes darted around, embarrassed by the question for a bit before his eyes went wide, quickly looking at her in shock ‘’no, it- i can’t be!’’ he cried, covering his mouth.

‘’As the eldest of the montilyet family i have seen my mother pregnant multiple times, the flared nostrils, the wider hips, the way you walk and hold yourself..inquisitor?’’ she quickly got down with him to the floor, he was shaking like a nug that had been shot, his eyes were wide and full of fear, tears were pooling in the corners of his eyes. ‘’Inquisitor..inquisitor..kallas?!’’ she called out to save him from the panic that started to reck his body, his eyes traveled up to her face ‘’it..please..don’t tell anyone josephine, no one can know..’’ he told her, his voice a mock of commandment as he hid his eyes behind his fingers ‘’but what about sir pavus?’’

He shook his head slightly ‘’no, i will..i will tell him when the time comes, just not right now’’ she could not change his mind even if she tried so she hummed with affirmation, rubbing his shoulders until he could stand before helping him back to his room. Once she had left he dropped against his back, jolting once he saw cole above his face, quickly sitting up with a hand over his chest ‘’makers cole, don’t do that it scares me’’

‘’Im sorry,’’ he apologized, moving to sit criss crossed on kallas bed ‘’you’re afraid, scared he will leave and be disgusted because he does not like women’’

‘’I am not a lady. And i am…i am afraid, i told the ambassador that i would tell him when the time was right’’ he held his head low, brushing his hands through his hair, pulling it from his ponytail, his bangs flopping in his face ‘’but that time will never come if you stay afraid’’

‘’Cole please, just..just for now leave, i will visit you later’’ he laid down, watching cole hum before he disappeared in thin air, with his own sigh he lifted his hand ‘’first i am pulled apart from my family, given a stupid mark, and now having a child..of mythal protect me would you?’’ he asked himself, looking up at the quilt over the bed before turning on his side ‘’Mythal’enaste, da’len, garas quenathra..’’ he whispered to himself, rubbing the palm of his hand over his stomach, his voice cracking as he repeated ‘’garas quenathra..ir abelas..’’ his apology was spoke more to himself, more to dorian for when he would find out. How funny, a tevinter atlus mage having a child with a dalish elf and no less a man, for he was a disappointment and dragging it all onto Dorian whose father was already disappointed in Dorian, being the inquisitor meant nothing in this situation.

Soft humming came from somewhere in his room, his eyelids lifted slowly, his vision swarmed before coming back to him and to the humming. Lifting himself onto his elbows he took in the view of Dorian's back, his arms crossed with one hand lifted questiongly on his chin as he looked through the many of the inquisitor's books ‘’..dorian? Is it already night?’’ Dorian hummed with a nod before walking over to the bed, a smile that held worry caressing his face. ‘’You’ve slept all day amatus, lady montilyet has told me you’ve fallen ill but i worry it is possibly much more than that, you usually never care to rest when you’re ill’’ he sat on the side of the bed, his hands coming to kallas, their fingers intertwined ‘’i..i could not tell you..’’ his head hung, his hand squeezing dorians ‘’now amatus, it isn’t good to hide something from me if it could harm you dearly’’

‘’..cole would tell you if i didn’t i suppose…i am with your child.’’

Chapter Text

‘’Amatus..are you serious..?’’ Dorian asked, his eyes wide with surprise in the unexpected delivery ‘’yes, lady montilyet has told me the signs, cole spoke of it too. Not the signs but of the child’’ Kallas lowered his head, awaiting for the crushing pain in his stomach to be right ‘’..are you sure?”

“..yes? Dorian, i just told you-” his face contorted in confusion as he looked up, was dorian playing with him?

Dorian grabbed his hands and moved to be fully in front of his face ‘’amatus, are you sure?" Kallas nodded slowly, his head slowly turned as his confusion grew till he was held tightly by Dorian ‘’oh! Dorian! Too tight!’’ he cried, sighing once the tight hold slowly released him ‘’i'm surprised, i thought you would be more upset’’ Kallas confessed as he frowned. His shoulders were held by the rough hands of his lover, his eyes glancing up to find dorian smiling at him softly ‘’there is no reason for why i would be upset, i am over skyhold for this is the most amazing news you could have ever tell me’’

Kallas' frown morphed into a soft smile, he couldn't help the way his throat tightened and the way tears pooled in the corners of his eyes as he hugged Dorian close, for now he knew he was safe, here in his lovers arms.

The strings danced together as the bard's voice swang gently in the air, for how she sang her melodies calmed his anxiety. His feet hurt in the flat boots but he would continue to walk, pulling an empty chair he sat beside krem, his thumbs fiddling together as krem looked to him from behind the bottle on his lips. Slowly putting it down he looked at kallas confused ‘’need something?’’ he asked in hopes to ease off the awkwardness. Kallas looked up from his hands, fidgeting non stop ‘’have you ever been pregnant?” krem choked on his saliva as he stared at kallas with wide eyes ‘’huh?! No! Where did that question even come from?!’’ he asked, his jaw may as well have been on the floor ‘’i asked have you ever been pregnant’’ he repeated with a pout. Krem sighed and shook his head ‘’of course not, why are you asking?” kallas leaned his head back and sighed ‘’cause I’m pregnant..’’ krem was quiet, they were both quiet, all to be heard was music and chatter. Peaking an eye open, kallas looked to the still and shocked krem. ‘’There's no way, you're being honest- wow- congratulations? I- i should get you some alcohol- oh wait no, you can’t drink that, ill get you some tea man’’ his eyes were wide but he stood, smiling awkwardly, kallas couldn’t contain the giggle that went past his lips. ‘’Alright, i think i’ll tell the bull then’’ krem gave him a curt nod before walking off.

Kallas stood from the chair, taking it back to the place he found it before messing with his hair, letting it fall against his back and his bangs to fall in his face, pursing his lips to blow a light air of wind his bangs slightly moved. With an annoyed roll of his eyes he walked over to where iron bull sat, ‘’hey boss’’ bull greeted, kallas smiled and moved to stand beside him, his hands rested, holding each other in front of his body, his thumbs fiddling with each other ‘’how do qunaris feel about children?’’ he asked, tilting his head, watching bulls face contort into confusion ‘’children? Well..i suppose we don’t mind them of course, but without their mothers they are typically raised being trained to fight, some get kicked out, some get killed’’ bull waved his hand, looking back at kallas ‘’whats with the sudden question?’’

‘’Huh, well i would hope you wouldn’t try to do that with my child, i’d like to raise them differently’’ he smiled, tilting his head back in place as he let bull think on his words before his mouth opened, surprise turning into possible joy ‘’bloody hell! Aha, a giant breach demon thingy in the sky, getting attacked by crazy cultist people, you’d think we’ve seen all but here you are boss!,’’ bull stood, his hands clasping onto kallas shoulders ‘’you’re bloody pregnant!’’ his hands squeezed as he laughed again ‘’this deserves a celebration!’’

‘’Oh- a celebration? I’d feel to more do that after i tell the others, only you, krem, dorian, and cole know..oh- and lady josephine’’ he said, giving bull a smile as he nodded “alright, then tell me when you're ready boss” he patted his shoulders a few time before moving to sit back.

Kallas walked off to the stairs, it would be a but before the tea was ready so he walked over, greeting close before he made his way to seras room where he pushed the door open slowly “sera?”

“Ah? Whatchya want inky?” Sear was dropped over the long cushions, a small red ball in her hand that went up and down, her leg over her knee and her foot bouncing mindlessly “ah nothing really important, just wanted to inform you on some news”

“Ughh, is it gonna be some more of the..uh- those weird novels you've been reading?” she asked, a bit distracted by the ball as she started to pay less attention, “no no, i'm pregnant” he came forth, it was getting easier to tell people now.

Her hand caught the ball immediately as she sat up, her jaw dropped as she stared “You're- bloody hell- you are weird-” she shook her head before looking down at the ball, slowly back up with a smirk “pft- this means you and stuck up fucked!”

“mythal'enaste, be quiet! What we did privately is none of your concern!” He covered her mouth quickly, his aflamed in red of the growing embarrassment “that will be all for you now, I will speak to you later sera” He said, shaking his head before walking off, doing his best to ignore her growing laughter. As the door closed behind him he jumped when harding gave him a warming hello, his growing reddened face getting even more red as she giggled “Sorry inquisitor, didn't mean to scare ya!”

“It's quite alright harding, just been a little off minded in a way, was there something you needed?” He asked with a smile before his eyes widened “oh before I forget to tell you I'm with child!” He gleamed as she began to smile “really?! That's amazing inquisitor, I know you're gonna be an amazing father!” She cheered with congrats as she pumped her fist “and nah, nothing new except for a few demons but they were easily killed by our troops” she said, resting her hands against her hips “well then, if nothing is wrong I will be on my way, thank you- for- being so supportive?” He asked mainly himself with a slanted smile as she nodded and pat his leg before watching him walk back into the castle like building

Walking into the ambassadors room He knocked on the wall to get lady montilyet’s attention and quickly she looked up to him with a smile “inquisitor, are you feeling better?”

“much, I was wondering if you had some extra paper and ink, I would like to write to my sister, she should be in minrathous”

“minrathous?- of course inquisitor” she smiled as she stood, searching around before she was able to get him some paper and ink so he could start writing “so what is your sister's name?”

“leinda” He said, a smile gracing his face before it turned into an annoyed scowl “and she's way taller than me, for how I've been jealous of it for years” he shook his head and began to write, soon with a sigh he stood “finished, thank you again lady josephine”

“anytime inquisitor” she said, graciously bowing her head while she folded up the letter, with that kallas left, making one more tip, after giving a soft kiss to dorian on passing he made his way downstairs to solas, a hum coming through his throat As he watched the bald elf do his thing “good evening solas, I hope I'm not interrupting” he said, tiptoeing over

“Of course not, da'len” he tilted his head towards him, a small soft smile that didn't reach his lips playing there “Mir anvallenim na dar da'len” kallas spoke calmly, watching solas eyes grow “da'len? Enasalin falon! Garas, var vhen mirthadra namaes melanada” sola spoke back, guiding his hand to kallas back so he could lead him to the kitchen to make him some tea as kallas had forgotten about his earlier one.
