Chapter 1: The Kazansky family
Chapter Text
Kazansky family:
Thomas Kazansky V 1 July 1961 ‘Iceman’ Cdr 6 foot tall and more solid than he is in Top Gun, growing interest in ecology and the environment. Degree in aeronautical engineering Masters in international security. Good at strategic planning.
Peter Mitchell C 1963 ‘Maverick’ Lt Cdr, fit with solid shoulder muscles and very nice abs. Degree and masters in aeronautical engineering pre claim, masters in Avionics post claim, designed all the Corsaire modifications and got her FAA certified.
Sarah Kazansky (which isn't actually her surname in fic because they're not married but that's what her AO3 tag is) V Court Stenographer, mother of the icicles. Brown hair and green eyes, petite, pretty
Sasha Maria Kazansky V late may 1990 ‘Sassy, sweetheart’ Ice's daughter, hip length blonde hair, blue eyes has her mother's face
Nicholas Jacob Kazansky V 8 June 1992 ‘Nippy, little bat’ Ice's son blonde hair green eyes
Peter Thomas Kazansky V 4 May 1995 ‘Tiny, Tigger’ Ice's son, brown hair green eyes, looks like Mav's son (half breeds are not possible in this verse)
Thomas Kazansky V Ice's Grandfather another sailor, Ice has never met him.
Jacob Kazansky V 1944 Ice's Father Sea captain, worked on an icebreaker when he met Ice's mother at 16, it was a one night fling. Very tall, black hair, extremely strong by vampire standards, excellent sailor, very limited education on anything that is not related to shipping.
Sasha V 1940 Ice's Mother, Marine biologist, life long quest to take a living photo of a spade toothed whale, had a fling with Ice's father when she was 20, blonde
Maria V Sarah's Mother legal secretary, does embroidery and makes clothes as a hobby
Nicholas V Sarah's Father works for the state department, likes stamp collecting, air force pilot in Vietnam, now a career diplomat, polyglot.
Peter V Sarah's older brother, died in a car crash when she was 16
Vehicles:
Ford Maverick, Ice's blue sports car, academy graduation gift from his mother (Unicorn’s cannon from Blood Bound)
Porsche I know nothing except it's Ice's, fast and swanky, 2 seats
The truck, of which Ice owns two by 2000, one in San Diego, one at the cabin, both dual cab pickups, both more practical than the ridiculous things you see these days, Mav's insured to drive them. The only vehicles they can all fit in
Quad, black and red quad bike, kept at the cabin, practical outdoorsman vehicle, no lights, has enough engine it can pull a trailer.
Corsaire: DHC-3 Otter single engine sea plane with amphibious undercarriage (they are real). Modified with larger wing flaps and tail control surfaces/ rudders and bigger engine to allow it to take off on the lake at the cabin which is shorter than the required water runway (inspiration was the batwing otter, also real). Wings and horizontal tail surfaces are white. Floats and belly blue swirls, upper fuselage and tail green triangles, all mingled with orange shapes that might be fish or falling leaves. The design is hand painted and based on the quilts, it looks like an abstract of the forest by the lake. Slider calls her Mav and Ice's fourth child. Kept at Montgomery Gibbs Executive Airport in San Diego.
Boats:
Canoe: big, long and narrow, older model, awkward to handle solo, can fit Ice, Mav and the children but not Sarah as well.
Bluesky: traditional wooden inshore sailing dinghy, mast collapses for storage, can fit Ice Mav, icicles and Sarah. Kept on the lake, Ice can just launch her single handed (easier with the quad to move the trailer), and can sail her solo easily. The icicles can also sail her as a crew of three as they get older. Just the sort of boat you learn to sail in, imagine the boat in Swallows and Amazons
Stargazer: small 1930s yacht, was at the cabin, now kept at a marina in San Diego. Mast can be taken down and she can be moved on a trailer (towed by an American pick up for long distances). Ice's father could sail her solo on the lake when it was calm, realistically and especially on the ocean she needs a crew of two or three. He could also with some effort, a large pulley and the quad (probably an earlier quad/ ATV) move her from the shed at the cabin to launch her. Ice can't do it solo, at the cabin he needed Mav and Slider to help. She has a small cabin but built for day trips not ocean voyages. Looks gorgeous and very proper, wood, brass fittings, cream sails, a very British / European model would be a yonne class cutter rigged sloop. It is not beyond the realms of possibility Kazansky senior moved one over, however if you are into boats and know something that fits (vintage enough young Tommy would think it was vintage in the 1960s, still capable of sailing with excellent maintenance today) I'm more than happy to take suggestions.
Bikes:
Mav collects Kawasaki's with a soft spot for ninjas:
85 model GPZ 900R (Mav's cannon bike in Top Gun)
89 model Tomcat ZX-10 Blue with red and white details
96 model ZX-11D Black and silver
72 model H2 Mach IV, restoration project in A very Vampire Vacation, exchanged once completed for the next three in late 1999
73 model Z1
72 model H2 Mach IV, came with the Z1 swapped for the restored Mach IV, these two where a muddle of parts
96 Zephyr 750, the third bike in the swap, had been in a wreck, another project
San Diego house:
L shaped and two story, twin garage at the end of each arm, Mav's is RV height and has a mezzanine floor for additional storage.
Mav has the downstairs master suite and has converted the ladies walk-in closet to be his bedroom, painted light blue, has a queen bed, at least two free standing closets and some drawers. He has the red white and dark blue / black star quilt that matches his helmet over the foot of his bed when he's home. (Yes American houses really do have closets that large in some cases, there's not a huge amount of floor space but it's comfortable).
The master bedroom is his living room painted in pale yellow light reflecting paint, that he enjoys but is uncomfortable for vampires). He has the sofa from Claim, a desk, bookshelves, laptop and numerous trinkets. The chaos quilts and rag rugs from Where No One Goes are in here.
From his room he can access the main living room directly or go via his bathroom then the man's closet (Where he keeps his clothes) into the utility. Ice is allowed into his closet for ease of logistics, no other vampires are allowed in any part of his rooms including the children, he will let human friends sleep in his bed if he's sleeping in Ice's and the spare is in use.
The utility allows access to his garage and the doors are reinforced and have bolts on Mav's side to in effect create an annex so he can be safely in the house with teenage vampires.
From the utility (washer, dryer, blood cleaning sink, blood microwave, storage) you access the kitchen which has a double fridge, blood on the right, human safe food on the left, normal appliances and a table with the window overlooking the garden, technically a breakfast nook but it's where they all sit for human meals and homework.
The kitchen connects to the living room completing the loop, Red white and blue themed although burgundy and dark blue not bright. Multi texture compass rose rug to match Ice's quilt. Deep blue sofa and chimney breast, burgundy curtains with gold bottoms, matt cream on the rest of the walls, wooden floor.
The original dining room is now a den with the TV, grey walls with paint that looks blue or lilac in different lights, mismatched suite and recliners, rainbows of rugs, blankets, and pillows everywhere. It feels like a vampire room. Thin almost net lilac curtains, deep blue black out curtain over them if needed.
Ice has a ground floor office, there's also a toilet.
Upstairs there's five bedrooms, two bathrooms and Ice's room is ensuite. King sized bed, two generous closets, bigger shower than Mav has. The children have a room each and there's a guest room. The boys rooms are blue, Sasha’s is creamy yellow, all have murals painted by Ice, low down beds with soft rugs, and closets with a good stash of extra bedding.
The yard has a large in ground trampoline that is up to Mav's weight and a home gym with pull up bars and wooden jump boxes. Whilst not bare they don't invest time in gardening so there's the Christmas tree in a pot and a few generic shrubs.
Chapter 2: The cabin and the Kazansky-Howard's
Chapter Text
Cabin.
Note the cabin, the location and the lake are all fictional
Original log cabin, with stone up to about halfway up the ground floor windows is now joined to later planed wood barn, wrap-around porch, all natural wood (Ice stripped the porch instead of repainting it).
Original cabin ground floor, small modern kitchen, with dining table, snug living area with blankets and pillows and enormous TV.
Upper floor, Ice and Mav's room, ensuite, huge tub, separate shower. There's a king sized bed with a log headboard and footboard (all the better for tying Mav up) and bare roof frames above that Mav can do pullups on. Juliet balcony with two chairs in front.
Linked to the barn by stairs and much later single story kitchen, in Ice's childhood they were separate rentals.
Barn ground floor now large formal living room with rock chimney breast and Naval paraphernalia on the walls and matching dining room.
Upstairs six bedrooms, two bathrooms, three bedrooms used by the icicles.
Loft level (only in the barn) four more bedrooms with sloping roofs and another bathroom. Rooms not in use are kept locked so they don't lose the children.
Basement, games room with pool, football and air hockey tables, black leather corner sofa, large TV, stack of board games. Also what was a butchery, now freezers, laundry and smaller meat processing area. No longer looks like a horror film set.
Outside. large stone flagged terrace on the cliff overlooking the lake, man made pond, huge tree Fort that is a work in progress. Out buildings where the Bluesky, quad and cabin truck are kept. Ramp down to a small beach and a newly built jetty for the Corsaire.
The lake is half open water with a marshy Reed bed at the outlet, half small islands, it's fed by more than one stream and contains an algae that causes stomach upsets in humans if it gets into cut or is otherwise ingested (they can swim in it safely as long as they don't drink it).
There's what was a grazing meadow that is now full of wild flowers and butterflies a short distance away up the quad track, the trees from there where used to build the barn after the trees around the cabin where cleared to build the cabin, then it was used for livestock rather than replanted, it went wild once the vampires left, there's no sign of the old fence, hunters nicked it for firewood over the years.
Four bee hives, in the meadow, near the cabin to feed on the fruit trees, in a remote pollinator friendly clearing, along the drive where pollinator friendly plants have been planted.
There's a huge English Oak between the outbuildings and the cabin, the only plant inside the fire break, planted when the cabin was built.
The woods are mixed and contain numerous giant sequoia (and younger sequoia) including one that came down forever ago and is now a hollow tunnel to play in. As a fantasy forest, whilst pines are dominant it's made up of whatever trees I need and is far more dense in many places than the forests of the geographical area. My excuse is that it never got logged like much of the region did IRL.
Kazansky-Howard Family:
George Kazansky-Howard H 1920 Ranch owner, steward when Jacob managed the cabin, Grandpa George
Mary Kazansky-Howard H 1926 George's wife, Amazing cook, barrel racer in her youth, Grandma Mary
Gina Kazansky-Howard H 1946 their daughter, horse trainer, Aunty Gina
Mitch H Gina's husband, mechanic, rode broncs when Gina met him, works as a pickup rider for local rodeos
Georgia H 1970 Gina's daughter, barrel racer turned horse trainer
Todd H Georgia's Husband, ranch hand who does a lot of the day to day cattle management where Glen focuses on the business side, tie down ropes with Gary
Oscar George H April 2000 Todd and Georgia's son
Gemma H 1973 Gina's daughter, teacher in Thomsonville, doesn't live on the ranch, there's no bad blood, she just didn't want to commute three hours each day
Gregory Kazansky-Howard H 1947 killed in Vietnam
Georgia Kazansky-Howard H 1948 died of polio 1950
Glen Kazansky-Howard H 1951 George's and Mary's son steward to Ice, rancher and businessman, Uncle Glen
Sue Kazansky-Howard H Glen's wife, barrel racer in her youth, biologist works for Ice's parks department
Greg Kazansky-Howard H 1975 Glen's son, studied business and accountancy to take over stewardship from his father, works at the offices day to day, manages Farm to Freezer scheme.
Gary Kazansky-Howard H 1978 Glen's son tie-down roper with Todd, rancher, wants to take over running the ranch one day, happy working alongside his family right now and learning the job
Grace Kazansky-Howard H 1980 Glen's daughter, hobby is equine obstacle course races, away at vet school
Ranch Horses (all are named after candy or Country singers):
Cash black quarter horse stallion Glen's primary mount
Hershey 1982 Bay quarter horse mare star on her forehead Ice first met as a weanling, independent minded excellent working cattle horse
Dove 1996 filly, Hershey's daughter, bay, white star, first filly, much wanted after several colts with mom getting older, Glen very happy
Rascal 1996 colt, black, son of Cash, mother left him for new baby, struggling a bit, they plan to sell him
Cherry 1996 filly, barrel racer bred, they're looking to move her to a competitive home if she's fast, likes water
Dolly palomino mare Sassy is learning to ride, in foal spring 2000
The ranch has a main house which is white clapboards and a wrap-around porch, close to the ranch the fences are white post and rail, further out they're wire. Large red and white barn, large arena and round pens for horse training, cattle sorting pens and chutes, driveway robust enough to drive a loaded semi truck down. Several other houses further out where George, Gina and Georgia live with their families. Looks very Hollywood picture perfect.
Kazansky lands:
Centered on the Sequoia national forest and the wider lands from the Sequoia national park border to the north down the Kern River to Lake Isabella from outside Porterville in the west to the 395 in the east. With the clarification that the towns and roads within are fictional, which is why they have different names. You are welcome to imagine any of my places overlapping existing places, to be very clear I don't. Having the clan there longer than America has existed means the area has been developed and managed differently. Please don't tie yourselves in knots trying to make Mav running out of a clinic and up a hill work, I certainly didn't.
Sequoia national forest itself is more densely forested than IRL with more diverse trees as the clan planted oaks for ship building / maintenance as well as other hardwoods and extra pines. The invasive pines are being removed as they were often planted in monoculture blocks, the hardwoods may be logged in time but are welcome to stay where they improve biodiversity, any that are logged will be replaced. Giant Sequoia trees are present and more are also actively being planted.
The forest has become heavily managed to prevent wildfires and the whole of the Kazansky lands have a system of fire breaks. The forest is split into two sections: The private lands around the cabin, maybe three miles on the side where Glen's ranch and the state park are, easily ten everywhere else including the whole lake and any point to can see the lake from. Then what is known as the state park (still managed by Ice's team), which has a stream close to the cabin where the sitting tree is, numerous groups of beavers. Hunting is banned but hiking is allowed.
The wider lands include the farms (multi generation tenant farming families like the Kazansky-Howard's).
Thomsonville, the town where the castle park is, which used to have a stone mansion on it until there was a huge fight between the vampires and someone got annoyed, dragged the cannon from the ship a long way inland and blew it to bits. The town has a lot of stone buildings as a result. The park has a normal play park, model railway, the play Fort the children refer to as the castle, and a Mav/ vampire safe ice-cream stand. The town has a school where Gemma works and a new lumber mill. It's probably also where Mav and Mary visit the gas station diner in Blood Bound.
Very small town with a good farmers market, where Mav found the quilts, over dirt roads from the cabin, has better road links to other places.
Llanhilleth, the clinic town where Doctor Lawrence works is about half Ice's, not including the clinic. It contains a chain grocery store, blood bank, toy store, traditional (Mav safe) sweet shop, and a hardware store to date (it's bigger than that, just not sure what else is there). The name happened because the guy who made the maps when the clan lands became part of America was Welsh, and misheard “Clan Hill is twenty miles that way,” and labeled it with the Welsh spelling that originally came from Llanheledd (Welsh for 'church of Saint Heledd'), by the time the finished maps where seen by anyone who cared it was too late. The town has long been a vampire haven, not all the sailor vampires were clan members so many settled there, close to friends whilst not on the clan lands propper. To this day it has a much higher than average vampire population.
The clinic itself is somewhere between a robust GP and dental practice and a small hospital. It's the only facility for miles around so can cope with minor surgery, regular maternity care, simple fractures etc. It is a vampire clinic but has limited human facilities. My headcanon is there is a small human GP practice in the town and they will call the doctors from there at need, with the clinic coping with things like urgent labor and at least stabilising patients to get them to larger hospitals. Medicine in verse is more divided than it needs to be because sick vampires are dangerous and human drugs don't work well for them, which makes vampire medicine often seem archaic. Not to mention the complexities of American health insurance. However a competent doctor of either species can treat an emergency in the other and in remote areas most will step up.
Vesperease: Vampire Tylenol/ paracetamol equivalent, comes in adult and child versions, it's pink and the icicles like it.
Vespergel: vampire teething gel, tastes like dirt
Tramadol: real world synthetic opiate, Headcannon: it works for vampires, comes as an oral liquid in milder forms or as an injectable which can be loaded into epipen style auto injectors, to drink it's white and not particularly nice tasting
Doctor Lawrence V vampire paediatrician, does noninvasive tests on Mav for the study, works in Llanhilleth but she's in San Diego for a conference during Even if You're Scared
Central fund businesses:
All businesses, farms etc pay profits after all bills wages and expenses into the fund, the profits are split three ways: twenty percent to Ice, seventy percent to the central fund, ten percent back to the businesses as a bonus, the fund fulfils the historical role of the clan and keeps everyone going if businesses collapse or crops failed etc. It also supplies any insurance needed including health insurance.
Farm to Freezer/ Field to freezer scheme. Allows people to pre order initially meat from a specific farm, locally produced, slaughtered and butchered, free range and organic. Expanding all the time, they do monthly runs to San Diego after Mav started taking some of Glen's beef to work BBQs, also expanding into other produce grown or made on Kazansky lands (Ice's beekeepers have hives in other places for one).
Ice cream shop that also does milkshakes, was a farm shop, funding allowed them to go into business with kiosks, there's one at the castle park, the farmers market and anywhere else on Ice's lands we need ice cream, will distribute via the Farm to Freezer scheme.
Lawyers, subsidiary of a wider law firm, there's an office on Ice lands, gives him access to a legal specialist in any dilemma Accountants, one of Glen's changes, the central fund itself is now managed to generate wealth, very securely at very low risk but it's still generating a significant income.
Parks management. This one is a cost rather than a generator of income, they manage the forests, fire breaks, beavers etc, as visitor numbers increase they're covering half their costs through holiday lets and the ecological benefits are huge.
The lumber mill is part of this team and does break even, Ice has no interest in commercial logging but managing forests created timber and they might as well sell it. The parks programme is also part of a wider scheme to provide good jobs to people who want to stay local and have no interest in college. Skilled trades are always useful but in an area with a small population you only need so many of each.
Over time more and more claim descendants are able to stay, more work means more children which means more jobs in other industries. The population is probably still lower than it was in the clan days but it's getting there and in a way that is isolated from the tech boom silicon Valley side of California life. Ice controls who can live on these lands (and he's absolutely using the fund to buy back private housing and buy up more of Llanhilleth) it's his kingdom for his people, he is in some ways a benevolent dictator.

Edward Howard H Admiral younger brother of Thomas (real world historical person)
Charles H Duke of Suffolk friend of Henry VIII (real world historical person)

Nicholas V head of the Kazansky clan
Thomas V Nicholas's great grandson built the cabin
Edward C James's great grandson built the Howard's ranch

Clara V 1999 6 month old red hair baby Edith's daughter
VTC location if you look on Google Maps there's a fancy looking white building with a pool next to the blacks beach trail head. I think it might well be part of UC San Diego but the location on the cliffs, secluded from the road and overlooking a private beach works with what I dreamed up
VTC building, white building, converted mansion, column fronted, fountain in the centre, immaculate gardens.
Lobby with reception desk and four TV screens.
The building was built by vampire architects for a very rich vampire. It never echoes, the air is always fresh, the light is just right (some rooms and the corridors are a little gloomy for Mav, some have excellent natural light).
To the rear is a saltwater pool, boring, rectangular half track/ 25m length, deep end with diving boards. A natural kids splash park with artificial beach, fountains, shallow pools, small slides, play mud pit. And something between a play area and outdoor sensory space under trees that don't exist IRL. Lots of rocks and logs to climb on, big tree nets, things to hide in and under, grass and bark chips and pebbles.
Indoors four large sensory spaces:
One full of fancy carpets and things to touch and roll on.
The galaxy, what you'd think of as a traditional sensory space, lights and things that can be adjusted to vampire or human levels
The night hub, a planetarium, original to the house, many pillows and bean bags to lie on
A large pirate themed soft play centre (think the kind with near vertical slides that adults can also use) everything is contained in and around a pair of pirate ships, not part of the original mansion but very much needed when vampires are banned from human soft play when they get their adult fangs at seven, can be hired out, large ball pit.
Lagoon pool, indoor fresh water pool, has ramp and hoist for physio access, kidney bean shaped, looks like a lagoon with mature shrubs planted around it, hidden slides, tunnels to caves and rocky grottos, has bubble chairs in a shallow ares, separate human hot hot tub Mav adores. Part of the original mansion and gorgeous.
Other ground floor areas are a large gym, some classrooms, meeting rooms, therapist's rooms, random toilets and changing facilities and the cafe.
Upstairs, more therapy rooms, GP offices and treatment rooms, physio rooms, the library which contains a lot of research papers and banned books on vampires, and bedrooms furnished like small hotel rooms.

Chapter Text
Six-seven, V, 1967, Mav's jailer/ worker at the evidence storage facility
He has a severe speech impediment, his children have been taught to keep quiet. He will get help and they will all learn to speak in time.
He keeps the two and four year olds, and his seven year old son who he moves to day school.
His elder boys are fourteen, twelve, and ten, they stay in boarding school, their mother has them in a good school and they are together and happy there. They rebuild a relationship with their father and younger brothers over time, visiting home for breaks. Whilst there is some jealousy, they are pragmatic enough to realise that they would not have the opportunities they do if they were one of six.
The three year old girl gets adopted with her five year old sister who she remembers well and the middle baby. Their adoptive parents are a nurse and a radiographer at the clinic in Llanhilleth.
The elder baby is adopted with the newborn by a couple the VTC has been counselling after they found out they have an extremely high risk of having a child with a genetic heart defect, it's not compatible with life and they've already lost a baby to it.
The baby the mother is currently pregnant with is a little girl named Mya. Once she is born she is adopted by Art and Lin (they also have a son of their own later on). She's raised knowing she is adopted and knowing Six-seven as her uncle, he sees more of her than his other daughters and their relationship is the least complicated. She's told the truth at sixteen but it changes little, she grows up to follow in Art's footsteps.
The other six girls below seclusion age went to three different families.
The two teenage girls remain their mothers, like the older boys they are happy at school together, they never regain a close relationship with either parent.
Of 19 children, thirteen are girls, after what their mother did Six-seven only ever has a distant relationship with his daughters, very much an uncle.
Their mother is sentenced to vampire rehab, which is not pleasant. The bureau's fucked up views on precious children mean she faces no charges for what she did to Six-seven.
The children all grow up to live normal lives after their traumatic start, none of them suffer from their mother's addiction.
