Captain and Commander

Summary:

An outlaws’ faction semi-romance?

Notes:

My first fic!! Sorry if it’s bad or the story is too short or straightforward I came up with the plot as I wrote.

- Tags say ‘traveller’ but the ‘traveller’ is referred to as an ‘anomaly’ from the race in customization, I know there’s overlap between titles.

- These ‘~~~’ indicate time skips, there was a LOT of material that would have been really mundane if I wrote it out so I just cut it.

Work Text:

To suggest the prospect that the outlaw captain would have his freighter risk being in jeopardy two days prior to now… would be met with only burlesque from DreadEntity Shnveveks. Though despite being an improbable occurrence by his database, fate brought the ship to near ruin as the engines were damaged, and hull, all primarily the work of a singular vessel, one of an outlaw, and one of an anomaly, no less.

The ship in question, as far as he knew, was belonging to ‘Adonael, Admiral of the Black’; he who stood before the Korvax entity two days ago, taking the dreadnought as his own property as due to its rank and aesthetic appeal. Shnveveks thereby came to despise this anomaly, having been more willing to have his offer of units and nanites from his piracy accepted than the ship he held so dear to himself as among one of his only achievements; convinced he had done something to upset the Atlas as due to his misfortune.

Though now, he took note from the front of the ship of his crew’s amplified exuberance — and upon inquiry, finding that it was the expansion efforts of this anomaly that had uplifted their moods and brought a surge in overall productivity. Bitter to, yet ever so respecting of this Adonael, Shnveveks came to reluctantly stand from the chair he was typically sat upon. stepping through the threshold from the main ship to the front, only to find that there was in fact significant, conspicuous expansion.

The prior maze of corridors to compose his main ship now open and adorned with various stabilized planetary glitches, panels, tables, chairs, sofas, posters, decals… more colorful, yet still maintaining harmony between them despite going against his very expertation — at this there was no helping how the lights of his visor flicked slightly and how he felt some sort of static sensation throughout his form, resonating most within his carapace — something he typically only felt upon finding large quantities of trade commodities upon a destroyed freighter.

This he detested to by all means, however; for this was the selfsame individual who had assumed the position and responsibilities of captain within his ship, despite not gaining the title. Overstepping his title as ‘commander’ seemingly intentionally; seeming to the Korvax-Entity as compensation for something else in Adonael’s case. Simultaneously confident in the face of the universe’s vastness and afraid of it — loud and demanding in presence, yet ever so reticent.

So in his natural curiosity, it was only inevitable Shnveveks would conduct scans and careful analysis of Adonael, not understanding the complexity of emotions from a being such as his now commander. No longer reluctant with the prospect of being intrigued by the very same individual who essentially took ownership over his own ship from him. However to his shame, there was not much to work with given how Adonael seldom made any appearance; ignoring he along with his primary crew. Given this obstacle, after a few days, Shnveveks eventually succumbed to his curiosity, prompting him to once more leave his place in the front, gently yet somewhat firmly intercepting Adonael when he came to assign missions to the fleet.

“Korvax-Entity has been meaning to ask what it is that troubles you. Scans reveal unease.”

The anomaly only stood for a few moments in silence, devoid of any body language, and any visible expression seeing as his hexagonal visor concealed whatever expression would likely be had. However, eventually, this anomaly did manage to sigh quietly, lazily now leaning against the dashboard; slightly shaky voice and all.

“Sectors of your fleet and my own have been in… conflict. Primarily concerning their incomes, I…”

He shook his head slightly, as Shnveveks with some hesitation, came to his feet and placed a firm hand upon Adonael’s shoulder, tilting his head slightly as he did so, taking note of the signs of fatigue displayed by Adonael.

“Korvax-Entity can help.”

~~~
With this the two spoke of finances and other matters, Shnveveks to have had to contain the strange feeling he felt at even this more professional interaction. No longer could he conceal the effect of their proximity upon him; not solitarily as the anomaly had appeared to have been willing to lessen his own power for the sake of better unity, yet as he was also fairly… physical — he found.
Hand upon the shoulder of the captain now, the anomaly did not appear to mind the contact as much as the captain himself — thinking it to be a gesture of respect. Though this was as fairly short lived, as due to the sudden notification from Adonael’s exosuit, accompanied by a distant, pulsating flash within the interior space of the freighter, reflecting off of the smooth walls and to his visual impression processors. Deriving from a far out dashboard of the expedition room — telling of an emergency broadcast, to which he sped away to attend to — the Korvax finding himself going after this anomaly, to his own surprise. Given time, Adonael is able to decipher few of the signals to be distress calls, though Shnveveks managed to do so sooner as due to his capabilities as a Korvax.
At this realization, Adonael freezes up, going stiff as he still manages an answer, albeit more firm and quiet than he was typically — at least that had been seen by the captain. Yet what the captain had too seen, was a prior incident like this, knowing the ship losing connection subsequent to a distress broadcast never returned. Rather than simply hear this news, the anomaly started to the teleporter down to the docking deck.
“…Shnvev, keep an eye on the rest of our fleet, I’ll organize myself a small squad in search of the frigate.”
Despite the surge of power once again traversing through his carapace and very being at the nickname he had gained — seeing as his full name proved to be a mouthful for any non-Korvax. Shnveveks did come to immediately interject, more harshly than even he anticipated would be of himself.
“No… Korvax-Entity will accompany you.”
There was a pause at this statement; for this anomaly had never experienced the event, and was not sure if more frigates would disappear should each be unattended to — as if a process of sequestering the deployed vessels would be with the chance to be driven to completion. He was well aware Korvax were not among the most battle-adept; that title best befitting the Vy’keen.
Viewing the ever still frigate from the docking station, two ships just as close on two side by side landing pads as were the both of them in relation to one another; the captain very lucidly being accustomed to combat within the comfort of either his freighter, or his ship — near to never in person. Shnveveks traversed the now scratched, dented, and dusty floors of the freighter lento, and carefully, scanning each ‘vine’ and bulging, seemingly growing — flora, he presumed — that appeared to be on the verge of bursting. Yet what else remained along his concerns was Adonael; ever so tense, though seemingly calm in his abilities — as if the crimson tone of the inside and faint hum of failing systems brought him discomfort, or disorientation to some degree.
‘The crimson’, the captain is able to discern through near silence, Adonael’s own voice hardly a whisper, though nothing else came from him — simply proceeding down a more narrow corridor, with a more uneven texture and seemingly hardly wide enough for allow for the passage of light. Even despite this, Adonael proceeded somewhat absentmindedly, though he immediately reacts upon stumbling across horrors. Green-tinted monstrosities that appeared to emerge from those bulging areas, likely to have been hatched or awoken, there is nothing within the database offering specification as to which. Whilst the captain continued along this train of thought, the anomaly had only picked off the rest of these biological horrors, tense, albeit not attempting to remain concealed as the captain had done upon viewing the horrors.
Though even still, as one of the horrors composing this barrage of attacks launched itself for Adonael, he paid no mind to it seeing as he had already sidestepped so as to close the distance between him and one of the larger horrors. The one in which had propelled itself finding it was upon the Korvax; causing him to fall first to a pipe which was the derivenent of a loud bang, cracking his visor and sectors of the carapace as a ramification, as well as a temporary disconnect from the convergence — now with a web-shape engraved within his visor. This left the entity now reliving that selfsame moment, hearing his visor crack, the trepidation from this alone being akin to that from what an anomaly would feel upon cracking their skull. Adonael took no notice of this initially, the growls of the biological horrors driving out the noise of cracking nanite glass — extracting communication data from the database before turning to view the horror — somewhat lazily at first given the humidity — this in which he felt penetrating his suit with heat to accompany it, noting the warnings of his exosuit. The robotic voice proving to be a contrast from the converted environment to be more organic.
Upon viewing it along with a motionless form upon the ground, the anomaly did manage to grab this horror, ejecting it into the vastness of space whilst in a state of rare trepidation, feeling his lightheadedness only be amplified; serving to only spread the horrors to somewhere upon the surface of the planet below. A feeling able to leave him slower in his reactions from the slight guilt, especially from lack of oxygen. Not that the system would ever witness the likes of him again, seeing as the industry was unsuccessful and thereby could not be effectively pirated.
Calling the freighter to their location via exosuit, Adonael managed to eventually escort the captain to a medbay he had recently formulated, no conventional medical supplies yet, not that it mattered given how there were only mechanical components to mend, and time to allow reconnection with the convergence.
~~~

Hours upon hours of pacing, some in adding touch ups to the interior of the freighter, pacing as in laps around the interior, focusing upon the contrasting colors of the lights and layout. The anomaly found himself uncomfortable, multi-colored lights serving to only display his conflicting emotions to the galaxy; to a like degree he was upon seeing the crimson, the sight likely amplifying his reaction to this injury — or so he wished to believe. Though eventually, he did hear the faint noise that was the sound of a Korvax voice from the medbay.

At this he managed to walk at a more leasure pace, having near collected his bearings via the use of GekNip and indulgence in its scent, and the amplifications of the surrounding lights, albeit finding that he could not stop himself from glancing to the bubbling nanite foam concealing the cracked visor; which the Korvax was to immediately acknowledge, given the typically observant nature of his people, and especially curiosity channeled toward the anomaly, as due to how Adonael intrigued him and bettered his own crew by some means. Immediately averting his gaze and leaning against the cold wall as he had when stressed prior, he formed the parallel within his head and so shakes his head slightly as if to dismiss the thought, despite remaining frontmost within his mind.

“…Korvax-Entity conducted a scan upon the consoles before disconnection from the convergence, proving that—“

Adonael lifted a hand, silencing the captain only momentarily, compelling himself from the very prospect that the data at all pertained to him, although it may have been a sign of his fleet being in jeopardy, he did not know.

“Korvax-Entity wishes you know that all components are modular, and all harm should be reversible.”

Adonael stands up from leaning against a counter within the medbay with a sigh, to being closer in proximity to Shnveveks. Leaning slightly over him not out of intention, yet more as he could not keep with having all of his limbs so tense. Though not even attempting to keep his voice level could work wonders to that degree.

“You still should not have gone, there is no guarantee nothing has changed within our fleet.”

This anomaly, ever so ruthless in taking the freighter days prior, now placed his hand upon that of Shnveveks’ own. Clasping it gently yet firmly as he attempts to get his point across, speaking more with a firm voice, tense, and with his head slightly tilted. To which the captain processes all. Only focusing upon sitting up in such a way that he is able to offer rudimentary support to himself, albeit not without tremble, as he manages to sit up to gently press the visor of his head to that of Adonael’s helmet with a clink, the room falling to silence until Shnveveks manages more speech.

“There are countless stars with countless fleets to purchase from.”
